Ice-T: ‘Rap was my way out’

LOS ANGELES - Growing up as an orphan in south central Los Angeles, Ice-T saw rap and his lyrical gifts as a ‘vehicle for getting out of trouble’. The rapper turned actor has become the longest running black actor in television history with his ongoing role in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, but it was through hip-hop that he first made a name for himself. In a wide-ranging lecture at the Red Bull Music Academy Festival in LA, he admitted: “Rap was just a stepping stone man. I just wanted out. I wanted the big house, I wanted the fly s***. Rap was just a way out. “It was like low-hanging fruit. One day I got this epiphany. I’m like, ‘Iceberg Slim isn’t just a pimp and a player, he’s a writer.’ There’s so many hustlers and players in the world, but who knows their name. “I was like, if I’m going to be known, if I want to go down in the books, I can’t just live the game, I have to document the game. “And that’s how I’m going to be known about the average cat on the street. When you listen to my music, don’t listen to it like a rap record. Listen to it like me telling you stories over music.”

The 59-year-old has been something of a groundbreaker in his career, going from the rap game to the silver screen after New Jack City actor and director Mario van Peebles overheard him talking in the bathroom, of a night club, and offered him a big acting break. Ice-T’s reaction was, “I can’t act, I’m like are you kidding me?’ He said ‘I want you to be in a movie’ and I thought that was Hollywood bulls***. So he said, ‘Call Warner Brothers tomorrow’, so I called Warner Brothers and they asked me to come.” He landed the part earning then a fairly meagre $23,000 for a film that took $87 million at the box office, but from there, his career took off, with films alongside the likes of Denzel Washington and Keanu Reeves following quickly afterwards. Of his rap career, he acknowledges in the early days that, “I didn’t know what I was doing. I was just trying to get out of trouble.” Ice-T has recorded eight studio albums, 51 singles and 80 music videos, selling over 10 million albums in the US alone. JAKARTA - Indonesia’s Mount Agung volcano on island of Bali erupted for a second time in less than a week on Saturday evening, sending a grey-black plume of ash and steam at least 1,500 meters into the sky and leading several airlines to change flight plans. “Tourism in Bali is still safe, except in the danger (zone) around Mount Agung,” Indonesia’s Disaster Mitigation Agency said in a statement, referring to an area that extends to a radius of up to 7.5 km from the summit. “There has not been an increase in seismic and volcanic acivity after the (Tuesday) eruption and until this afternoon,” said the statement, noting that it had not changed its emergency status for Agung from level 3. The agency also called for calm among the local community, from which around 25,000 people have been evacuated from the slopes of Agung to hundreds of refuge shelters. The latest eruption had produced a bigger ash cloud than an initial eruption on Tuesday, it said. After

that eruption, Singapore had updated its travel advisory for the island, warning that ash clouds could “severerly disrupt air travel”. J. A. Barata, a spokesman for Indonesia’s Transportation Ministry, said flights in and out of Bali remained “normal”. “Tactical guidance for departure and arrival aircraft has been applied. This hasn’t endangered any flights,” he said. However, several international flights, including from several cities in Australia and to the Netherlands and Malaysia,

appeared to have been cancelled and re-routed on Saturday night as a result of the eruption, the official website of Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport said. Many unemployed are educated Entrepreneurship needs to be instilled DENPASAR - Bali’s unemployment rate is the lowest in Indonesia, at only 1.48 percent in August 2017. Despite being the lowest in the country Bali is still facing the problem of graduates of vocational schools and universities still being unemployed. Apparently vocational schools and universities need to instil a sense of entrepreneurship in their students. Division Head of Social Statistics at the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali, Asim Saputra, said that as of August 2017, Bali’s labour force was 2,434,450 people strong which showed a slight reduction from the 2,463,039 working people in 2016. The highest unemployment rate -2.69, is amongst vocational school graduates, and unemployment amongst university graduates is 2.51 percent. The lowest unemployment rate -0.54, is amongst people with who only have elementary level education. An economist from Undiknas, Prof. Dr. I.B. Raka Suardana, said the reason that unemployment amongst Bali’s educated youth is so high is that the younger generation does not want to step out of their comfort zone. They are reluctant to seek new experiences that may not seem appealing to them. “ They are reluctant to take informal jobs as they consider these lacking prestige. Instead they only look for formal jobs or positions as civil servants”, said Suardana. As a result, many of the job opportunities that Bali’s younger generation should be taking advantage of, are instead taken advantage of by people from outside Bali. “The culinary sector for example could be explored. Also, newly graduated engineers could open air-conditioning or welldrilling services. Why should people from other islands be taking these opportunities?”, he joked. If vocational school and university graduates are creative and innovative, they can create job opportunities. According to Suardana, there seems to be something wrong with the education that these youngsters are receiving because apparently there has been little to no attention placed on encouraging entrepreneurship. Although there are several universities that provide business education, the deepening of entrepreneurship has not be adequately done, he said. “ They just study and then go home without having had entrepreneurship instilled as a valuable characteristic” he said adding that Universities need to improve their applied education –especially with regards to entrepreneurship. In many overseas universities, lecturers actively involve their students in their research projects. This provides stu-

dents to learn to apply the theories they have learned. This is also done in Indonesia, however very few lecturers get research projects so very few students get the opportunity to directly apply their studies. The same is true to industry involvement. Although industries welcome the services of students in completing some projects but the number of students who get this opportunity is limited. “ It is not more than 5 % of all students who have this kind of experience” said Suradana.

He average lecturer to student ratio in Indonesia is 1:45, while overseas the average is 1:10. This is another obstacle. The curriculum for the National Qualification Network of Indonesia (KKNI) that will be applied soon will put more emphasis on vocation so that university graduates are better qualified to work and can develop entrepreneurial skills. According to Suradana, the kind of labour force that is needed is one that of better quality: ready to adapt not just ready to be used. (kmb42)

Informal sector unable to accomodate goods and it is mostly people form outside Bali who are doing this kind of work. Although many Balinese youngsters want to work in the formal sector, recent job fairs show that even within this sector these young graduates are picky. OF the 3,400 jobs offered by 40 companies in a recent job fair, only 1,500 people applied for these positions, leaving 1,9000 vacancies. “All jobs offered in the job fair are formal sector jobs and even though many jobs were offered the applicants were still very choosey. These youngsters do not want to start in lower ranked positions as they feel this lacks prestige”, explained Wiratmi, adding that many prefer to become government employees or to work in tourism. There are in fact many job opportunities in retail companies that are also classified as formal sector jobs. “In addition to being overly picky, these graduates do not

have the competencies required for many job openings. We are now striving to bridge this gap by providing training and apprenticeships. Wiratmi explained that they are targeting communities with high employment rates for these training sessions. She predicts that the highest rate of unemployment is found in poorer areas like Bulelelng and Karangasem. Next year, the Bali Manpower and Energy and Mineral Resources plans to provide labour to cruise ship companies and also plan to intensifying efforts to encourage entrepreneurship. “Now, we need to approach the younger people and inform them about the advantages of having entrepreneurial skills, so that the informal sector can be filled by people from Bali”, she concluded. Nazi art trove goes on display at Swiss museum, heir to Gurlitt collection

BERN - Some 150 art works from a massive trove amassed by a German collector during the Nazi era went on public display for the first time on Wednesday in the Swiss capital, amid lingering questions about the origins of the collection. German art dealer Hildebrand Gurlitt built up the collection after being enlisted by the Nazis to sell so-called “degenerate” modern art they had seized from German museums. His son Cornelius Gurlitt inherited the art and then kept it stored in his Munich apartment for decades. The Kunst Museum Bern was stunned to learn in May 2014, the day after Gurlitt’s death, that it had been named as the sole heir to 1,500 works, including paintings by Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Its exhibition “Degenerate Art - Confiscated and Sold” is composed mainly of drawings, lithographs and paintings confiscated by the Nazis from museums and acquired by Hildebrand Gurlitt. “For the most part we know exactly when the works were confiscated, from which German museum,” Nina Zimmer, director of the Bern Art Museum, told Reuters Television. “We only have taken works where we are 100 percent sure

they were not looted (from private owners),” she said, adding that a further 300 “degenerate” works were awaiting clarification of their ownership as intensive research continued. “Art, after 70 years, needs to see the light of day and the public needs to reconnect with the art works,” Zimmer said. A separate exhibition of works from the Gurlitt collection will open in the German city of Bonn on Friday with the title “Nazi Art Theft and Its Consequences”.

“EXEMPLARY WORKS”

At a news conference to mark the opening of the Bern exhibition on Wednesday, Zimmer said the gouaches and works on paper - by leading avant garde German artists of the 1920s and 30s banned by Adolf Hitler - represented “exemplary works of symbolism, constructivism and objectivism”. They include 20 works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, such as “Liebesszene” (Love Scene), a 1908 colour lithograph depicting two nude women embracing. Woodcut prints by Emil Nolde, horses painted by Franz Marc and colourful female portraits by Otto Dix are other stand-outs. German tax inspectors discovered Cornelius Gurlitt’s art collection during a raid on his Munich home in 2012, after

a customs inspection on a train from Zurich triggered a tax evasion probe. A task force set up by the German government to determine the ownership history of the works said in Jan. 2016 that only five had been wrongfully taken from Jews, drawing criticism from Jewish groups. Paintings by Matisse, Max Liebermann and Camille Pissarro have been restored to the rightful heirs. Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, told the German daily Die Zeit on Wednesday: “There are still museums and collections that do not do provenance research. And unfortunately the archives are still not as accessible as they should be. Some institutions prefer to hide behind data protection regulations.” A Paul Cezanne painting, whose exact provenance is being determined amid discussions with the French artist’s descendants, is expected to go on display in Bern before the current exhibition ends in March, Zimmer said. “We do hope for feedback, perhaps a person will remember seeing a painting, or someone remembers a letter about a work. Debris piles up at former Buleleng Harbor

SINGARAJA — The heavy rains that started falling over the last few days have brought some adverse effects. In addition to flooding in some areas, garbage has started to flow down from rivers, covering many beaches in plastic waste and branches. In a single day up to 8 trucks loads of garbage were recently carted off from the former Bueleleng harbour in Kampung Tinggi village, Singaraja. The former Buleleng Harbour is one of the Town of Singaraja’s tourist attractions and since Sunday (Nov. 19), plastic bottles, branches and other marine debris has been piling up here after flowing down from Buleleng River. To prevent the rubbish from disturbing the environment and the convenience of tourists, the Buleleng Environment Agency regularly deploys waste transport

officers. Starting on Tuesday (Nov. 21), the officers have been collecting marine debris and transporting it to the landfill at Bengkala village, Kubutambahan subdistrict. On average, the officers haul 48 cubic meters of garbage every day (equivalent to six truck loads a day). Dewa Ketut Armika, Division Head of Garbage Management and Hazardous Waste Substance (PSLB3) at the Environment Agency, said on Wednesday (Nov. 22) that at the start of the rainy season, at least 20 special officers are deployed along the coast near the former Buleleng harbour and along the Buleleng River to collect debris that tends to increase in volume during the rainy season. “We have spread garbage hauling officers along the coast from the area of Segara Temple at Buleleng customary village to the 741 Infantry Battalion Company, Banyuning village”, he said. MANGUPURA — Once again local residents have complained about the presence of pig breeders in Benoa Village and the stench generated by the waste – especially when it rains. There are a total of 44 breeders recorded to be operating in Benoa Village, of whom are breeding pigs and another four breeding chicken. Headman of Benoa Village Wayan Solo responded to these complaints by summoning all breeders in Benoa Village on Wednesday (Nov. 22) and reminded them to pay better attention to their waste processing. Admittedly, local residents have often complained about the the livestock breeders. For example there have been many complaints about the pig farm near Puja Mandala as the waste from the pigs is sometimes carried by rainwater right to people’s homes. Many other neighbours have also complained about the stench emitted by various farms in the area. Last week the Grand Forest Park Police came down to the scene to check things out. “Neighbouring

residents of a nearby housing complex and surrounding villas have complained. Firm steps will be taken with people whose activities can cause pollution and damage to mangroves”, said Solo. Wayan Solo however also said that there is not a lot they can do because the breeders are trying to earn a living and by prohibiting their activities they would be interfering with their livelihood. For the time being the most important thing to do is to appeal to breeders to manage their waster in a way that minimizes the stench generated. “ We hope their activities will no longer cause environmental pollution nor cause people to complain”, he concluded. Creating septic tanks to accommodate the manure of their livestock, said Solo is one way that the breeders could deal with this issue. This would prevent the manure from being washed away by rain water and would also reduce the stench. “ Making septic tanks is one of the measures that we recommend”, said the Headman of Benoa Village. AMLAPURA — After the first phreatic eruption of Mount Agung a few days ago (Nov. 21), there was a second on Saturday (Nov. 25) at 17:20 and again at 19:13. The first phreatic eruption resulted in smoke and ash wafting up some 600-700 meters, while the latest saw plumes of some 1, 500 meters above the crater. As observed byBali Post on Saturday, a thick cloud of smoke was seen above the peak of Mount Agung, drawing the attention of people in the area. Australia’s centre-left Labor party is leading in the tight race after three-quarters of votes were counted following Saturday’s poll, while Hanson’s party has yet to confirm victory in a single seat. Wasan Temple Projected for Spiritual Tourist Attraction

Historical heritage of Wasan Temple Site, Puseh Wasan Temple, is located at Blahtanah hamlet, Batuan Kaler, Sukawati, Gianyar. It will be transformed into a spiritual attraction. Some time ago, the Bali, NTB, and NTT Archaeological Institute returned to research by taking the position of excavation in the northeast of Wasan Temple Site. This 24th research stage involved 12 researchers to find the supporting buildings of Wasan Temple. In previous research was found archeological items with fundamental in nature in the form of a temple with stone structure having the foot length of 11 meters, width of 8 meters, and height of 13 meters as well as a pond measuring 22 meters long, 7 meters wide and 3 meters depth. This research also involved about five supporting devotees (pengempon) of the local temple, especially in the excavation of the land. Once everything is revealed, Wasan Site located amid the paddy fields of Subak Wasan is projected to be a spiritual tourist attraction. “This research is a continuation of the findings of 2016. At that time was found some structural buildings made of sand stone,” said the Head of the Archaeological Institute for Bali, NTB, and NTT, I Gusti Made Suarbawa. He has not been able to predict the supporting buildings of the temple. However, in terms of the soil texture, the building is estimated to have been buried during a flash flood disaster. The type of floating soil also indicates if this area was also affected by volcanic ashes

from the eruption of Mount Rinjani in Lombok in ancient time. Suarbawa added that the study was based on the research during the period of 1986 to 2006 that found archaeological remains like the temples with stone construction and a pond having been restored by Heritage Conservation Agency for Bali, NTB and NTT Region in 2009. The results of the study were followed up with the excavations from 2011 to 2017. Suarbawa said the complex of Wasan Temple Site is estimated to date from XIII-XIV AD based on statues found on Wasan site, such as four-faced Brahma statue, deity statue and Nandhi statue whose lapels are decorated with skulls. Besides, it was found the statues of Ganesha, Lingam-Yoni, statues of embodiments and statues of animals. The finding of this Wasan Temple site is inseparable from the role of a Dutch researcher, JC Krishman, who first visited the Wasan site in 1950. At that time, he only found the mounds of land and a number of scattered ancient statues. But the temple supporting devotees still used the location for worship by establishing a simple building on it.

A few years later, the Denpasar Archaeological Institute conducted an observation to the site and found some relics of statue. The observation was done by accident. In 1986, the institute was doing research in Cangi, and then on the request of residents, the Denpasar Archaeological Institute team was delivered to Wasan Site. Priest of the Puseh Wasan, Jro Mangku Wayan Lasia Siaja, 48,

said that he supports the research so that people know about the history of Wasan site. Formerly, the Puseh Temple area was still a bush, but after the research it has turned into something like this. “Existence of this temple is very strategic located in the area of ??Denpasar-Gianyar road section, making it possible to become a tourist attraction. Many foreign tourists had made a visit to this site,” he said.

Tourists from the Netherlands and France came here where they more frequently visited for spiritual tourism purposes. They get information from the internet. However, the tourists often complain about the difficulty to look for the site location. Then, it needs a signboard of Wasan Site. “In the 2000s, the tourists made a visit and stayed overnight to do meditation,” he explained.(kmb)

Saudi Crown Prince condemns Egypt attack at Islamic military gathering

RIYADH - Powerful Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman condemned the attack on an Egyptian mosque that killed more than 300 worshippers and said it would galvanize an Islamic military coalition he convened in Riyadh on Sunday. Top defence officials from some 40 Muslim-majority countries met for a summit aimed at countering “terrorism”. The alliance was announced two years ago by Prince Mohammed, who also serves as defence minister of the country which claims the mantle of leadership in the Islamic world. This year he has pledged to restore the ultra-conservative kingdom to a more moderate and tolerant version of Islam. “(The attack) was a very painful occurrence and must make us contemplate in an international and powerful way the role of this terrorism and extremism,” Prince Mohammed said. Gunmen attacked a mosque on Friday in Egypt’s North Sinai killing more than 300 worshippers, including two dozen children. The coalition has yet to take decisive actions but officials have de-

scribed it as a grouping that would allow member states to request or offer assistance among themselves in fighting groups they designate as terrorists. Such assistance could include military force, financial aid, materiel or security expertise, and will have a permanent base in the Saudi capital. The coalition will focus not only on a military, security and intelligence track but also efforts to combat terrorist financing and ideology. “The biggest threat from terrorism and extremism is not only killing innocent people and spreading hate, but tarnishing the reputation of our religion and distorting our belief,” Prince Mohammed said in opening remarks. The Resilient Jakarta Secretariat, set up this September, has since brought together government officials, researchers, businesses and citizens’ groups to map the city and pinpoint issues that will be outlined in a first report due to be published in two weeks. Making matters worse, most residents and businesses rely on wells that drain underground aquifers for their water supplies, resulting in the city sinking by 5-10 cm each year. Rising sea levels and the inability of crumbling infrastructure to cope with excess water during heavy storms and the monsoon season result in regular flooding. Resilient Jakarta’s report will ask how health and wellbeing can be improved through better water and waste management. The city is working hard to solve these problems, said Mungkasa, with improvements to water infrastructure, including the piped supply, and new waste water treatment facilities set to be built over the next 20 years. Jakarta’s piped water network needs to be expanded to both poor and wealthy neighbourhoods, said Marcus Lee, a senior urban economist at the World Bank in Jakarta. Because well water is free and often seen as cleaner, the government must also enforce piped water usage where accessible, he added. The city’s slums - many located on land vulnerable to flooding - are another challenge, said Lee. New housing estates, often backed by government cash, tend to be built where land is cheaper, outside commercial areas. “If you’re able to afford a house, chances are it’s going to

Construction of the $3-billion Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) railway began in 2013, and it is likely to be up and running by 2019, when a light rail transit is also due to open. “We are trying to solve the problem,” Mungkasa said. “In two or three years after the MRT (is built), the situation will be much, much better.” Jakarta has also implemented an odd-even licence plate policy for key roads to limit private car use in busy hours, while many residents have embraced motorcycle taxi apps in an effort to beat jams. Critics note, however, that the MRT project will only connect South Jakarta to the city centre, and will therefore not be a silver bullet to cure chronic traffic problems. There are also questions over whether the new train networks will be integrated with existing public transport, like the TransJakarta bus rapid transit system. Saudi Crown Prince condemns Egypt attack at Islamic military gathering

RIYADH - Powerful Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman condemned the attack on an Egyptian mosque that killed more than 300 worshippers and said it would galvanize an Islamic military coalition he convened in Riyadh on Sunday. Top defence officials from some 40 Muslim-majority countries met for a summit aimed at countering “terrorism”. The alliance was announced two years ago by Prince Mohammed, who also serves as defence minister of the country which claims the mantle of leadership in the Islamic world. This year he has pledged to restore the ultra-conservative kingdom to a more moderate and tolerant version of Islam. “(The attack) was a very painful occurrence and must make us contemplate in an international and powerful way the role of this terrorism and extremism,” Prince Mohammed said. Gunmen attacked a mosque on Friday in Egypt’s North Sinai killing more than 300 worshippers, including two dozen children. The coalition has yet to take decisive actions but officials have de-

scribed it as a grouping that would allow member states to request or offer assistance among themselves in fighting groups they designate as terrorists. Such assistance could include military force, financial aid, materiel or security expertise, and will have a permanent base in the Saudi capital. The coalition will focus not only on a military, security and intelligence track but also efforts to combat terrorist financing and ideology. “The biggest threat from terrorism and extremism is not only killing innocent people and spreading hate, but tarnishing the reputation of our religion and distorting our belief,” Prince Mohammed said in opening remarks. Iraq and Syria, which have been fighting Islamic State for the past three years, are not part of the coalition. Neither is Saudi arch-rival Iran, which Riyadh accuses of supporting terrorism. Qatar, which has been isolated by Saudi Arabia and Arab allies for the past six months over alleged support of terrorism, was originally part of the coalition but did not appear to be in attendance at Sunday’s meeting. Known as the “Big Durian” after the stinky fruit popular in the region, Greater Jakarta is home to about 25 million people and faces numerous challenges due to rapid urbanisation, climate change and the failure of infrastructure and public transport to keep pace with its expansion. In addition to its infamous congestion - which is often cited by traffic studies as the worst in the world, and costs the city an estimated $3 billion per year - Jakarta also suffers from water scarcity, poor sanitation, regular flooding, air pollution and a lack of affordable housing. Last year the mega-city joined 100 Resilient Cities, a network backed by The Rockefeller Foundation to help cities deal with 21st century pressures. The Resilient Jakarta Secretariat, set up this September, has since brought together government officials, researchers, businesses and citizens’ groups to map the city and pinpoint issues that will be outlined in a first report due to be published in two weeks. It could also learn from other Asian cities, including Bangkok and Singapore, which are part of 100 Resilient Cities and have shared their experiences at workshops. The Thai capital released its resilience strategy earlier this year which tackled flooding and water usage, while Singapore is pumping billions of dollars into public transport and tightly controls car use and ownership. Back in Jakarta, commuter Widyawati conceded that the commuter line has improved in the past couple of years. “Things are slowly getting better,” she said. (rtr)

A coastal city built on a swampy plain, roughly 40 percent of Jakarta is below sea level. Making matters worse, most residents and businesses rely on wells that drain underground aquifers for their water supplies, resulting in the city sinking by 5-10 cm each year. Rising sea levels and the inability of crumbling infrastructure to cope with excess water during heavy storms and the monsoon season result in regular flooding. Resilient Jakarta’s report will ask how health and wellbeing can be improved through better water and waste management. The city is working hard to solve these problems, said Mungkasa, with improvements to water infrastructure, including the piped supply, and new waste water treatment facilities set to be built over the next 20 years. Jakarta’s piped water network needs to be expanded to both poor and wealthy neighbourhoods, said Marcus Lee, a senior urban economist at the World Bank in Jakarta. Because well water is free and often seen as cleaner, the government must also enforce piped water usage where accessible, he added. The city’s slums - many located on land vulnerable to flooding - are another challenge, said Lee. New housing estates, often backed by government cash, tend to be built where land is cheaper, outside commercial areas. “If you’re able to afford a house, chances are it’s going to

Vehicle emissions, made worse by Jakarta’s jams, account for 70 percent of air pollution in the city. Besides the economic costs and negative effects on quality of life, the pollution puts extra pressure on public health services. But in a city where pedestrians and motorcyclists often face off over the use of ramshackle pavements, some steps are being taken to help ease congestion. Construction of the $3-billion Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) railway began in 2013, and it is likely to be up and running by 2019, when a light rail transit is also due to open. “We are trying to solve the problem,” Mungkasa said. “In two or three years after the MRT (is built), the situation will be much, much better.” Jakarta has also implemented an odd-even licence plate policy for key roads to limit private car use in busy hours, while many residents have embraced motorcycle taxi apps in an effort to beat jams. Critics note, however, that the MRT project will only connect South Jakarta to the city centre, and will therefore not be a silver bullet to cure chronic traffic problems. There are also questions over whether the new train networks will be integrated with existing public transport, like the TransJakarta bus rapid transit system. BUSINESS Europe’s retailers tempt shoppers with Black Friday deals LONDON - Retailers across Europe chased shoppers on “Black Friday” in a test of consumer demand, particularly in Britain, where the spending spree imported from the U.S. looked set to outdo last year. After last month suffering their biggest decline in sales volumes for four-and-a-half years, British retailers are pinning their hopes on discounts to get shoppers squeezed by inflation and subdued wage growth spending again. In Britain, the annual promotional event, traditionally focused on electrical goods, has been mainly played out online since 2014, when in-store sales were marred by scuffles. The jury remains out on whether retailers make money by cutting prices in an event that was imported to Britain from the United States by online retailer Amazon in 2010. By 3 p.m., Barclaycard, which processes nearly half of UK debit and credit card transactions, had seen an 8 percent increase in spending compared to last year, and a 32 percent increase in transactions. “Consumers may be opting to buy more goods at a lower price rather than investing in a handful of higher-value items,” said Barclaycard’s Paulette Rowe. Wasan Temple Projected for Spiritual Tourist Attraction

Historical heritage of Wasan Temple Site, Puseh Wasan Temple, is located at Blahtanah hamlet, Batuan Kaler, Sukawati, Gianyar. It will be transformed into a spiritual attraction. Some time ago, the Bali, NTB, and NTT Archaeological Institute returned to research by taking the position of excavation in the northeast of Wasan Temple Site. This 24th research stage involved 12 researchers to find the supporting buildings of Wasan Temple. In previous research was found archeological items with fundamental in nature in the form of a temple with stone structure having the foot length of 11 meters, width of 8 meters, and height of 13 meters as well as a pond measuring 22 meters long, 7 meters wide and 3 meters depth. This research also involved about five supporting devotees (pengempon) of the local temple, especially in the excavation of the land. Once everything is revealed, Wasan Site located amid the paddy fields of Subak Wasan is projected to be a spiritual tourist attraction. “This research is a continuation of the findings of 2016. At that time was found some structural buildings made of sand stone,” said the Head of the Archaeological Institute for Bali, NTB, and NTT, I Gusti Made Suarbawa. He has not been able to predict the supporting buildings of the temple. However, in terms of the soil texture, the building is estimated to have been buried during a flash flood disaster. The type of floating soil also indicates if this area was also affected by volcanic ashes

from the eruption of Mount Rinjani in Lombok in ancient time. Suarbawa added that the study was based on the research during the period of 1986 to 2006 that found archaeological remains like the temples with stone construction and a pond having been restored by Heritage Conservation Agency for Bali, NTB and NTT Region in 2009. The results of the study were followed up with the excavations from 2011 to 2017. Suarbawa said the complex of Wasan Temple Site is estimated to date from XIII-XIV AD based on statues found on Wasan site, such as four-faced Brahma statue, deity statue and Nandhi statue whose lapels are decorated with skulls. Besides, it was found the statues of Ganesha, Lingam-Yoni, statues of embodiments and statues of animals. The finding of this Wasan Temple site is inseparable from the role of a Dutch researcher, JC Krishman, who first visited the Wasan site in 1950. At that time, he only found the mounds of land and a number of scattered ancient statues. But the temple supporting devotees still used the location for worship by establishing a simple building on it.

A few years later, the Denpasar Archaeological Institute conducted an observation to the site and found some relics of statue. The observation was done by accident. In 1986, the institute was doing research in Cangi, and then on the request of residents, the Denpasar Archaeological Institute team was delivered to Wasan Site. Priest of the Puseh Wasan, Jro Mangku Wayan Lasia Siaja, 48,

said that he supports the research so that people know about the history of Wasan site. Formerly, the Puseh Temple area was still a bush, but after the research it has turned into something like this. “Existence of this temple is very strategic located in the area of ??Denpasar-Gianyar road section, making it possible to become a tourist attraction. Many foreign tourists had made a visit to this site,” he said.

Tourists from the Netherlands and France came here where they more frequently visited for spiritual tourism purposes. They get information from the internet. However, the tourists often complain about the difficulty to look for the site location. Then, it needs a signboard of Wasan Site. “In the 2000s, the tourists made a visit and stayed overnight to do meditation,” he explained.(kmb)

The alert level for the volcano remains at level III (watch) and it is recommended that no activities take place within a radius of 6 kilometer plus the sectoral extension as far as 7.5 km to the North-Northeast, SouthSouthwest”, said Syabhana. More than a decade after the end of a civil war between Maoist peasant guerrillas and security forces, Nepal is hoping this election - the first parliamentary polls since 1999 - will complete its long journey from a monarchy to become a federal republic. A Maoist splinter group was behind a series of small blasts in the run up to the polls, army spokesman Nain Raj Dahal said, adding that security forces have defused around 30 improvised explosive devices since Friday. Nazi art trove goes on display at Swiss museum, heir to Gurlitt collection

BERN - Some 150 art works from a massive trove amassed by a German collector during the Nazi era went on public display for the first time on Wednesday in the Swiss capital, amid lingering questions about the origins of the collection. German art dealer Hildebrand Gurlitt built up the collection after being enlisted by the Nazis to sell so-called “degenerate” modern art they had seized from German museums. His son Cornelius Gurlitt inherited the art and then kept it stored in his Munich apartment for decades. The Kunst Museum Bern was stunned to learn in May 2014, the day after Gurlitt’s death, that it had been named as the sole heir to 1,500 works, including paintings by Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Its exhibition “Degenerate Art - Confiscated and Sold” is composed mainly of drawings, lithographs and paintings confiscated by the Nazis from museums and acquired by Hildebrand Gurlitt. “For the most part we know exactly when the works were confiscated, from which German museum,” Nina Zimmer, director of the Bern Art Museum, told Reuters Television. “We only have taken works where we are 100 percent sure

they were not looted (from private owners),” she said, adding that a further 300 “degenerate” works were awaiting clarification of their ownership as intensive research continued. “Art, after 70 years, needs to see the light of day and the public needs to reconnect with the art works,” Zimmer said. A separate exhibition of works from the Gurlitt collection will open in the German city of Bonn on Friday with the title “Nazi Art Theft and Its Consequences”.

At a news conference to mark the opening of the Bern exhibition on Wednesday, Zimmer said the gouaches and works on paper - by leading avant garde German artists of the 1920s and 30s banned by Adolf Hitler - represented “exemplary works of symbolism, constructivism and objectivism”. They include 20 works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, such as “Liebesszene” (Love Scene), a 1908 colour lithograph depicting two nude women embracing. Woodcut prints by Emil Nolde, horses painted by Franz Marc and colourful female portraits by Otto Dix are other stand-outs. German tax inspectors discovered Cornelius Gurlitt’s art collection during a raid on his Munich home in 2012, after

a customs inspection on a train from Zurich triggered a tax evasion probe. A task force set up by the German government to determine the ownership history of the works said in Jan. 2016 that only five had been wrongfully taken from Jews, drawing criticism from Jewish groups. Paintings by Matisse, Max Liebermann and Camille Pissarro have been restored to the rightful heirs. Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, told the German daily Die Zeit on Wednesday: “There are still museums and collections that do not do provenance research. And unfortunately the archives are still not as accessible as they should be. Some institutions prefer to hide behind data protection regulations.” A Paul Cezanne painting, whose exact provenance is being determined amid discussions with the French artist’s descendants, is expected to go on display in Bern before the current exhibition ends in March, Zimmer said. “We do hope for feedback, perhaps a person will remember seeing a painting, or someone remembers a letter about a work. Debris piles up at former Buleleng Harbor

SINGARAJA — The heavy rains that started falling over the last few days have brought some adverse effects. In addition to flooding in some areas, garbage has started to flow down from rivers, covering many beaches in plastic waste and branches. In a single day up to 8 trucks loads of garbage were recently carted off from the former Bueleleng harbour in Kampung Tinggi village, Singaraja. The former Buleleng Harbour is one of the Town of Singaraja’s tourist attractions and since Sunday (Nov. 19), plastic bottles, branches and other marine debris has been piling up here after flowing down from Buleleng River. To prevent the rubbish from disturbing the environment and the convenience of tourists, the Buleleng Environment Agency regularly deploys waste transport

officers. Starting on Tuesday (Nov. 21), the officers have been collecting marine debris and transporting it to the landfill at Bengkala village, Kubutambahan subdistrict. On average, the officers haul 48 cubic meters of garbage every day (equivalent to six truck loads a day). Dewa Ketut Armika, Division Head of Garbage Management and Hazardous Waste Substance (PSLB3) at the Environment Agency, said on Wednesday (Nov. 22) that at the start of the rainy season, at least 20 special officers are deployed along the coast near the former Buleleng harbour and along the Buleleng River to collect debris that tends to increase in volume during the rainy season. “We have spread garbage hauling officers along the coast from the area of Segara Temple at Buleleng customary village to the 741 Infantry Battalion Company, Banyuning village”, he said. MANGUPURA — Once again local residents have complained about the presence of pig breeders in Benoa Village and the stench generated by the waste – especially when it rains. There are a total of 44 breeders recorded to be operating in Benoa Village, of whom are breeding pigs and another four breeding chicken. Headman of Benoa Village Wayan Solo responded to these complaints by summoning all breeders in Benoa Village on Wednesday (Nov. 22) and reminded them to pay better attention to their waste processing. Admittedly, local residents have often complained about the the livestock breeders. For example there have been many complaints about the pig farm near Puja Mandala as the waste from the pigs is sometimes carried by rainwater right to people’s homes. Many other neighbours have also complained about the stench emitted by various farms in the area. Last week the Grand Forest Park Police came down to the scene to check things out. “Neighbouring

residents of a nearby housing complex and surrounding villas have complained. Firm steps will be taken with people whose activities can cause pollution and damage to mangroves”, said Solo. Wayan Solo however also said that there is not a lot they can do because the breeders are trying to earn a living and by prohibiting their activities they would be interfering with their livelihood. For the time being the most important thing to do is to appeal to breeders to manage their waster in a way that minimizes the stench generated. “ We hope their activities will no longer cause environmental pollution nor cause people to complain”, he concluded. Creating septic tanks to accommodate the manure of their livestock, said Solo is one way that the breeders could deal with this issue. This would prevent the manure from being washed away by rain water and would also reduce the stench. “ Making septic tanks is one of the measures that we recommend”, said the Headman of Benoa Village. Many unemployed are educated Entrepreneurship needs to be instilled DENPASAR - Bali’s unemployment rate is the lowest in Indonesia, at only 1.48 percent in August 2017. Despite being the lowest in the country Bali is still facing the problem of graduates of vocational schools and universities still being unemployed. Apparently vocational schools and universities need to instil a sense of entrepreneurship in their students. Division Head of Social Statistics at the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali, Asim Saputra, said that as of August 2017, Bali’s labour force was 2,434,450 people strong which showed a slight reduction from the 2,463,039 working people in 2016. The highest unemployment rate -2.69, is amongst vocational school graduates, and unemployment amongst university graduates is 2.51 percent. The lowest unemployment rate -0.54, is amongst people with who only have elementary level education. An economist from Undiknas, Prof. Dr. I.B. Raka Suardana, said the reason that unemployment amongst Bali’s educated youth is so high is that the younger generation does not want to step out of their comfort zone. They are reluctant to seek new experiences that may not seem appealing to them. “ They are reluctant to take informal jobs as they consider these lacking prestige. Instead they only look for formal jobs or positions as civil servants”, said Suardana. As a result, many of the job opportunities that Bali’s younger generation should be taking advantage of, are instead taken advantage of by people from outside Bali. “The culinary sector for example could be explored. Also, newly graduated engineers could open air-conditioning or welldrilling services. Why should people from other islands be taking these opportunities?”, he joked. If vocational school and university graduates are creative and innovative, they can create job opportunities. According to Suardana, there seems to be something wrong with the education that these youngsters are receiving because apparently there has been little to no attention placed on encouraging entrepreneurship. Although there are several universities that provide business education, the deepening of entrepreneurship has not be adequately done, he said. “ They just study and then go home without having had entrepreneurship instilled as a valuable characteristic” he said adding that Universities need to improve their applied education –especially with regards to entrepreneurship. In many overseas universities, lecturers actively involve their students in their research projects. This provides stu-

dents to learn to apply the theories they have learned. This is also done in Indonesia, however very few lecturers get research projects so very few students get the opportunity to directly apply their studies. The same is true to industry involvement. Although industries welcome the services of students in completing some projects but the number of students who get this opportunity is limited. “ It is not more than 5 % of all students who have this kind of experience” said Suradana.

He average lecturer to student ratio in Indonesia is 1:45, while overseas the average is 1:10. This is another obstacle. The curriculum for the National Qualification Network of Indonesia (KKNI) that will be applied soon will put more emphasis on vocation so that university graduates are better qualified to work and can develop entrepreneurial skills. According to Suradana, the kind of labour force that is needed is one that of better quality: ready to adapt not just ready to be used. (kmb42)

OF the 3,400 jobs offered by 40 companies in a recent job fair, only 1,500 people applied for these positions, leaving 1,9000 vacancies. “All jobs offered in the job fair are formal sector jobs and even though many jobs were offered the applicants were still very choosey. These youngsters do not want to start in lower ranked positions as they feel this lacks prestige”, explained Wiratmi, adding that many prefer to become government employees or to work in tourism. There are in fact many job opportunities in retail companies that are also classified as formal sector jobs. “In addition to being overly picky, these graduates do not

have the competencies required for many job openings. We are now striving to bridge this gap by providing training and apprenticeships. Wiratmi explained that they are targeting communities with high employment rates for these training sessions. She predicts that the highest rate of unemployment is found in poorer areas like Bulelelng and Karangasem. Next year, the Bali Manpower and Energy and Mineral Resources plans to provide labour to cruise ship companies and also plan to intensifying efforts to encourage entrepreneurship. “Now, we need to approach the younger people and inform them about the advantages of having entrepreneurial skills, so that the informal sector can be filled by people from Bali”, she concluded. Unemployment dominated by vocational school and university graduates DENPASAR - The majority of unemployed people in Bali are vocational school and university graduates. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali from August 2017, this shows a general unemployment rate of 1.48 percent (36, 143 people). Amongst vocational school graduates the unemployment rate is 2.69 percent and 2.51 percent amongst university graduates. “Balinese people tend to be picky about what job they choose. Ice-T: ‘Rap was my way out’

LOS ANGELES - Growing up as an orphan in south central Los Angeles, Ice-T saw rap and his lyrical gifts as a ‘vehicle for getting out of trouble’. The rapper turned actor has become the longest running black actor in television history with his ongoing role in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, but it was through hip-hop that he first made a name for himself. In a wide-ranging lecture at the Red Bull Music Academy Festival in LA, he admitted: “Rap was just a stepping stone man. I just wanted out. I wanted the big house, I wanted the fly s***. Rap was just a way out. “It was like low-hanging fruit. One day I got this epiphany. I’m like, ‘Iceberg Slim isn’t just a pimp and a player, he’s a writer.’ There’s so many hustlers and players in the world, but who knows their name. “I was like, if I’m going to be known, if I want to go down in the books, I can’t just live the game, I have to document the game. “And that’s how I’m going to be known about the average cat on the street. When you listen to my music, don’t listen to it like a rap record. Listen to it like me telling you stories over music.”

The 59-year-old has been something of a groundbreaker in his career, going from the rap game to the silver screen after New Jack City actor and director Mario van Peebles overheard him talking in the bathroom, of a night club, and offered him a big acting break. Ice-T’s reaction was, “I can’t act, I’m like are you kidding me?’ He said ‘I want you to be in a movie’ and I thought that was Hollywood bulls***. So he said, ‘Call Warner Brothers tomorrow’, so I called Warner Brothers and they asked me to come.” He landed the part earning then a fairly meagre $23,000 for a film that took $87 million at the box office, but from there, his career took off, with films alongside the likes of Denzel Washington and Keanu Reeves following quickly afterwards. Of his rap career, he acknowledges in the early days that, “I didn’t know what I was doing. I was just trying to get out of trouble.” Ice-T has recorded eight studio albums, 51 singles and 80 music videos, selling over 10 million albums in the US alone. JAKARTA - Indonesia’s Mount Agung volcano on island of Bali erupted for a second time in less than a week on Saturday evening, sending a grey-black plume of ash and steam at least 1,500 meters into the sky and leading several airlines to change flight plans. “Tourism in Bali is still safe, except in the danger (zone) around Mount Agung,” Indonesia’s Disaster Mitigation Agency said in a statement, referring to an area that extends to a radius of up to 7.5 km from the summit. “There has not been an increase in seismic and volcanic acivity after the (Tuesday) eruption and until this afternoon,” said the statement, noting that it had not changed its emergency status for Agung from level 3. The agency also called for calm among the local community, from which around 25,000 people have been evacuated from the slopes of Agung to hundreds of refuge shelters. The latest eruption had produced a bigger ash cloud than an initial eruption on Tuesday, it said. After

that eruption, Singapore had updated its travel advisory for the island, warning that ash clouds could “severerly disrupt air travel”. J. A. Barata, a spokesman for Indonesia’s Transportation Ministry, said flights in and out of Bali remained “normal”. “Tactical guidance for departure and arrival aircraft has been applied. This hasn’t endangered any flights,” he said. However, several international flights, including from several cities in Australia and to the Netherlands and Malaysia,

appeared to have been cancelled and re-routed on Saturday night as a result of the eruption, the official website of Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport said.
