Prince vanishes from social media

NEW YORK - Prince, whose distaste for the music industry’s conventions is well known, has abruptly disappeared from social media after tentative efforts to promote his two new albums.

As of late Tuesday, the megastar’s Twitter and Facebook accounts had both disappeared and almost all videos from his official account had been taken off YouTube.

Prince offered no immediate commentary -- on social media or elsewhere -- on the reasons for the action.

But Prince’s two latest albums, which he released simultaneously in September, remained on the streaming service Spotify.

The move puts Prince at odds with most musicians, both newcomers and longtime stars, who have considered social media a virtual obligation to reach out to fans.

A number of stars -- most famously Taylor Swift -- have criticized Spotify, accusing it of

insufficient payouts to artists, but have nonetheless invested sustained energy in Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Prince had entered social media to promote the latest two albums but had barely disguised his lack of enthusiasm. He advertised a Facebook questionand-answer session after he joined the site but, after hours of queries, he responded to just one -- an esoteric matter about audio tuning -- by offering a link to an article.

The “Purple Rain” legend is known for bristling at the commercial advice of the music industry. Two decades ago, he wrote “slave” on his cheek and changed his name to the unpronounceable “love symbol” to protest his contractual terms with

Warner Brothers.

But Prince returned to Warner Brothers for his latest two albums -- “Art Official Age” and “Plectrumelectrum,” the latter performed with the all-female trio 3rdEyeGirl.

Prince was an early proponent of the Internet but later campaigned to crack down on unauthorized use of his songs.

Prince released his last album in 2010 on a CD distributed as an insert to several European newspapers.

In an interview at the time with one of the newspapers, Britain’s Daily Mirror, Prince declared the Internet to be “completely over” and said of digital gadgets: “They just fill your head with numbers and that can’t be good for you.”

NEW YORK — Netflix has picked up two seasons of a new sitcom from Tina Fey. Titled “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” it focuses on a woman who escapes from a doomsday cult and starts life over in New York. It was co-created

by Fey and Robert Carlock, who collaborated on “30 Rock.”

It stars Ellie Kemper of “The Office.”

Fey isn’t scheduled to appear in the series.

Netflix says the 13-episode first season will premiere in March.

The series had originally been bound for NBC, but that network passed. Universal Television, NBC’s corporate sibling, will remain the show’s producer.

‘Birdman’ leads Spirit Awards nominations Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — “Birdman,” a dark comedy about show business, took flight Tuesday with a leading six nominations for the 30th Film Independent Spirit Awards. Star Michael Keaton and director Alejandro González Iñárritu picked up nominations for the film from Fox Searchlight.

Nods also went to its supporting actors Emma Stone and Edward Norton and to cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki. Collecting five nominations each were the coming-of-age drama “Boyhood,” the Martin Luther King Jr. biopic “Selma,” and the noir thriller “Nightcrawler.”

Other films recognized in the best feature category included “Whiplash” and “Love is Strange,” both of which received four nominations.

Rosario Dawson and Diego Luna announced the nominees live from the W Hotel in Hollywood. The awards recognize achievements in independent film, and Oscar hopefuls are sprinkled throughout each category.

In addition to Iñárritu, directing nominations went to Ava DuVernay (“Selma”), Damien Chazelle (“Whiplash”), Richard Linklater (“Boyhood”) and David Zellner (“Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter”).

Film Independent also honored “Foxcatcher” with its Special Distinction Award and “Inherent Vice” with the Robert Altman Award. For unspecified reasons, neither film was eligible for individual nominations.

The Spirit Awards tries to recognize films outside the mainstream, but recent winners have tended to overlap with Academy Awards nominees.

Last year, the Spirit Awards winners matched the Academy Awards winners in several top categories, including best picture (“12 Years a Slave”), best actor (Matthew McConaughey for “Dallas Buyers Club”), and best actress (Cate Blanchett for “Blue Jasmine”).

Winners will be revealed at an awards ceremony on Feb. 21. 2015, a day before the Academy Awards. The Spirit Awards ceremony will air live from Santa Monica.

Agrotourism starts to draw travelers’ interest

AMLAPURA - Various ways have been taken by tourism players in Karangasem to attract travelers in order they make a visit to the lava land. One of them is by developing agrotourism as supporting objects for the visit to Besakih. By providing free admission, many travelers come and go to the tourist attraction.

Alam Giri agrotourism at Rendang, for instance, has conjured up a snakefruit moor into a tourist attraction. At the location, visitors are free to see a variety of plants cultivated. Besides, everyone can see how to process coffee traditionally.

“At the moment, civet coffee is very famous in the market. Therefore, we also demonstrate how to prepare

the coffee,” said Made Sugiri, the owner of the agrotourism.

Competition among the tourism stakeholders in Bali urges him to make more intensive efforts in order to be an interesting place to visit. One of them is by providing free admission into the land area of about 4 hectares. Not only that, his party also provides a free tester

of natural products owned by the agrotourism.

Made Sugiri revealed that his party had a wide range of products sold in the agrotourism. Revenue of the attraction was obtained from products sold to visitors. By that way, many visitors who wanted to drop in at Besakih chosen the agrotourism as their stopover. “Av-

eragely the most numerous visits are travelers from France, China, Japan and Korea,” he added.

The attractions established three years ago has considerable number of tourist visits. Highest number of visits occurred in July, August and September reaching 1,600 people a month. He did not deny that the number of tourist visits to his agrotourism destination relied on the number of visit to Besakih Temple.

In addition to agrotourism, many tourist accommodation businesses developed in Rendang like restaurant. Nevertheless, many cases of blackmail against visitors also

occurred at Besakih tourist attraction that made the tourism players apprehensive. He hoped that the number of cases tarnishing the tourism sector could be dealt with, so that it would not affect the number of tourist visits.

On the other hand, many other regions began to develop agrotourism objects like Tabanan and Karangasem. Moreover, not a few tourist attractions provide guide fee on behalf of visiting guests.

Averagely it ranges from 50 percent to 70 percent, so that it has an impact on the price of products sold. (dwa)

An award on Teacher’s Day

AMLAPURA - On the National Teacher’s Day and 69th anniversary of the Indonesian Teachers Association (PGRI), the PGRI Karangasem organized a celebration and the award conferment for the outstanding teachers at the Gunung Agung Stadium (GOR) Amlapura, Tuesday (Nov 25). order to increase the welfare, professionalism and competence of teachers in accordance with the expectation of society and Karangasem government.

“Teachers should continue to improve professionalism in accordance with the demands of times,” he added.

SINGARAJA - Rainy season starting to hit some areas in Buleleng brought in disaster. Based on the notes of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Buleleng, within the past week a number of disasters have taken place.

One of them was the collapse of compound wall at the SDN 2 Bongancina primary school, Busungbiu subdistrict after being hit by heavy rain. Such old compound wall broke down after local students and teachers already went home. Meanwhile, the activities of students and teachers at school were not disturbed.

He pointed out that Galungan village area and Lemukih village in Sawan subdistrict had been monitored within the past few days and coordination had been made with relevant authorities

in the event of a disaster so that relief effort could run optimally.

Similar efforts were also done by targeting several villages prone to landslides in Sukasada subdistrict.

He hoped the lowest apparatus could remind the residents to stay vigilant and responsive to the upcoming rainy season.

“We’ve opened an emergency post every day to monitor and make coordination on how to build cooperation and readiness to disasters. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Carbs more harmful than saturated fats Agence France-Presse

WASHINGTON - Long-derided saturated fats -- associated with an array of health problems such as heart disease -- caught a break Friday when research revealed their intake could be doubled or even nearly tripled without driving up their level in a person’s blood.

Carbohydrates, meanwhile, are associated with heightened levels of a fatty acid linked to increased risk for diabetes and heart disease, the same study showed.

“The point is you don’t necessarily save the saturated fat that you eat, and the primary regulator of what you save in terms of fat is the carbohydrate in your diet,” senior author Jeff Volek of Ohio State University, said in the report.

To conduct the study, which appeared in the journal PLOS ONE, scientists put 16 participants on a strict dietary regime that lasted four and a half months.

Every three weeks their diets were changed to adjust carbohydrate and total fat and saturated fat levels.

The scientists found that when carbs were reduced and saturated fat

was increased, total saturated fat in the blood did not increase, and even went down in most people.

The fatty acid called palmitoleic acid, which is associated with “unhealthy metabolism of carbohydrates that can promote disease,” went down with low-carb diets and gradually increased as carbs were re-introduced, the study said.

An increase in this fatty acid indicates that a growing proportion of carbohydrates is being converted into fat instead of being burned by the body, the researchers said.

“When you consume a very lowcarb diet your body preferentially burns saturated fat,” Volek said.

“We had people eat two times more saturated fat than they had been eating before entering the study, yet when we measured

saturated fat in their blood, it went down in the majority of people,” he said.

The finding “challenges the conventional wisdom that has demonized saturated fat and extends our knowledge of why dietary saturated fat doesn’t correlate with disease,” Volek added.

By the end of the trial, participants saw “significant improvements” in blood glucose, insulin and blood pressure and lost an average of 22 pounds (10 kilograms).

“There is widespread misunderstanding about saturated fat. In population studies, there’s clearly no association of dietary saturated fat and heart disease, yet dietary guidelines continue to advocate restriction of saturated fat. That’s not scientific and not smart,” Volek said.

WASHINGTON - Experts said Monday regular tests for vitamin D levels are not proven to be beneficial or harmful, despite previous research warning of damaging effects of vitamin D deficiencies in adults.

Studies have found that low levels of the vitamin can increase the risk of bone fractures, heart disease, colorectal cancer, diabetes, depression, Alzheimer’s disease and death.

But the US Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) said there was no evidence that getting regularly tested for sufficient vitamin D decreased health risks.

“Current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of screening for vitamin D deficiency in asymptomatic adults,” USPSTF said in a statement.

“We found no direct evidence on effects of screening for vitamin D deficiency versus no screening on clinical outcomes.”

The experts from the federal panel said that tests should be ordered on a case-by-case basis and should not be conducted universally.

People get vitamin D from sunlight and from oily fish such as salmon, tuna or mackerel, as well as milk, eggs and cheese. It is also available in supplement form and is a key component for healthy bones and muscle strength.

A 2010 report by the US Institute of Medicine concluded that vitamin D was essential for bone health but did not find that a deficiency causes disease.

The Institute recommends 600 milligrams per day for adults under 70 years old and 800 milligrams for older people.

A recent study in the British Medical Journal based on medical records from 95,766 people in Denmark found that reduced vitamin D levels increased the risk of mortality by 30 percent and boosted the risk of cancer-related deaths by 40 percent.

However, the researchers found no link between vitamin D deficiency and cardiovascular deaths.

About one billion around the globe are thought to have low vitamin D levels.

The elderly can be particularly vulnerable to such a deficiency because their skin is less adept at converting sunlight into vitamin D.

WASHINGTON - The percentage of Americans who are smokers has fallen to an all-time low, now representing just 17.8 percent of the population, a study released Tuesday found.

US health officials said the percentage of Americans who are smokers has fallen to the lowest level since 1965, when they began keeping records.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the number of American adults smokers fell from 45.1 million in 2005, or 20.9 percent of the USA population at the time, to 42.1 million.

Despite progress in reducing the overall number of US smokers, rates remained on the high side for some groups, particularly lower-income people, as well as gays and lesbians, the CDC said.

Smoking accounts for one in five US deaths annually, taking more than 480,000 lives.

According to US government data, smoking costs the economy more than $289 billion a year for medical care and lost productivity.

DENPASAR - Mixed cassava cake is one of the simple and affordable cakes of the Hindu community in Bali. Rural people love very much this kind of cake. Moreover, farmers often enjoy it as a substitute for rice. Its main ingredient is cassava mixed with sticky rice, grated coconut, brown sugar and salt.

In the past, people made the cassava a staple food. Understandably, the rice was very expensive at that time, even it was hard to get. At least, the cassava was cut into small pieces and then boiled and sprinkled with salt.

To get different flavors, people made the cakes in various preparations.

One of them is this mixed cassava cake.

The making of it is very simple. First of all, cassava is peeled and cut into small elongated shape. Alternatively, people can also use a slicer.

Before that, prepare sticky rice at adequate amount. It is then soaked for 24 hours and then drained. The cassava and sticky rice are steamed for about 10 minutes. Take out when they have been cooked.

Afterward, prepare brown sugar sauce and grated coconut. Add a little salt to the grated coconut so that it has a flavor. How to serve it? At first, prepare a dish and banana leaf as the base. Take an adequate amount of cassava cake and mixed with grated coconut. Having well mixed, top it with brown sugar sauce to taste.

The increasing price of banana sheath happened due to weather condition that was very much felt by craftsmen. Usually they purchased at IDR 500 per sheet and then it increased to IDR 750 per sheet. People expect the erratic weather condition would not dampen the price of banana sheath craft at the market although the raw materials began to be difficult to obtain in the field. “Quality of the craft can reduce because it is quite difficult to get banana sheath when entering rainy season. Typically the craftsmen get banana sheath in West Buleleng, but now the quantity of raw materials began to decline,” said Ketut Rasio, the maker of photograph frame and album made from banana sheath, Monday (Nov 24).

Other than weather condition, the price hike of raw materials was also influenced by the increase in the fuel price. Furthermore, the other raw materials in use included sea sand brought in from NTT, NTB and Lombok. Meanwhile, another material was leucaena leaves obtained from Banyuwangi, East Java. Craftsmen

assessed the increase in the fuel price was the main reason for the raw material collectors to increase the price. To overcome the problems and obstacles in the field, Ketut Rasio temporarily stopped the export. He planned to export again in 2015.

“The price hike of raw materials is influenced by weather condition and fuel price hike. The making and delivery of the craft is hampered by the raw materials. Our export will be stopped first and we are waiting for the decline in the price of raw material,” he explained.

During the making of photo frame and album crafts for two years, the most dominant export destination included the Hawaii, Jamaica, Venezuela and Mexico. In one shipment, the number of photograph frame and album exported could reach 5,000 pieces. On average, the export commodities were worth hundreds of millions of rupiahs. SINGARAJA - Due to the impact of fuel price hike, a number of traders at Anyar Market Singaraja raised the price of chili to IDR 50,000 per kilogram. The increase in the price of chili already occurred two days before. Allegedly traders were forced to raise the price considering the stock of chili at the market began to run thin.

One of the local chili traders, Nyoman Kariasa, said on Tuesday (Nov 25) that he raised the price as the chili because the stocks at the market tended to decrease.

Moreover, the price of cayenne pepper rose from IDR 48,000 to IDR 50,000 per kilogram. Then, red chili increased from IDR 45,000 to IDR 48,000. By and large, the

traders did not sell chili as many as on regular days. He claimed the price hike of chili had occurred for five times gradually before the fuel price hike was announced by

central government. “Chili stock at collector level begins to decrease and the price is then increased due to declining stock. Price hike has often occurred after the announcement of the fuel price hike since a few days ago,” he said.

Kariasa explained that every day he sold around 25 kg of chili. But due to restricted number of chili stock, he could only sell about 15 kg per day. The decrease in sales of

chili happened due to restrictions on the purchase from the collectors.

Traders eventually went through decline in sales volume of about 50 percent and the chili buyers were getting fewer at the market. “The number of chili buyers begins to decline after the fuel price hike. Price hike does not only occur in chili, but also in other food ingredients.

NEGARA - The number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Jembrana continues to rise each year and this condition kindles a concern among the circle of Jembrana House. Similarly, the quality of the handling of people living with HIV/AIDS through community health center or hospital seemed less optimal than what having been made by Denpasar.

I Putu Dwita, Deputy Chairman of Commission A, also highlighted the increasingly high number of people living with HIV/AIDS, whereas the county already had a regional bylaw on the prevention of HIV/AIDS. He questioned whether there was no decisive action made through prosecution

such as prevention so that people having risk should use condoms when having sexual intercourse.

“I’d like to know to what extent the law has been enforced, and whether it is just like a toothless tiger,” he said.

Chairman of Commission B of Jembrana House, I Nyoman Sutengsu Kusumayasa, said the increasing HIV/AIDS cases in Jembrana proved if the prevention efforts failed, let alone the reduction. His party asked the Health Agency not to just blame on people, but should also take action.

NEW YORK — These are the moments OPEC exists for: A sharp drop in global oil prices has reduced the amount of money OPEC countries take in by nearly $1 billion a day.

The 12-member group’s purpose is to coordinate how much oil is produced in order to keep prices high and stable and maximize member countries’ revenue while making sure global demand for oil stays strong. A steep, coordinated cut in output could stop and possibly reverse what has been a 32 percent decline in prices over five months.

But there is widespread doubt that OPEC will be able to do much of anything when it meets in Vienna later this week — doubt sent oil down another 2 percent Tuesday.

Analysts think OPEC members won’t agree to a cut or the cut will be too small to influence oil prices.

They could also, as in the past, agree to lower production but then fail to stick to the target.

That could mean further declines in the price of oil, along with fuels such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.

“The idea that this is a cartel that places meaningful restrictions on its members’ behavior is fiction,” says Jeff Colgan, a political science professor at Brown University’s Watson Institute who studies OPEC. “OPEC countries do exactly what we would expect them to do if there were no such thing as OPEC.” OPEC is at a crossroads. The group, which produces 30 million barrels of oil per day, one-third of

global liquid fuel demand, is facing the most pronounced decline in oil prices since the financial crisis hit in 2008. And the world now is drastically different. Oil production outside of OPEC is surging for the first time in a generation, boosting global oil supplies. U.S. production has risen 70 percent since 2008, adding 3.5 million barrels of oil per day. The increase itself is more than any OPEC member produces other than Saudi Arabia.

At the same time, OPEC members around the world — those in the Middle East and North Africa, along with countries such as Venezuela and Nigeria — are undergoing wrenching political upheaval that is putting extraordinary pressure on government budgets.

OPEC countries need oil money more than ever, making the steep cuts in production that would be necessary to push up prices all but impossible.

“They have quite a task in front of them,” says Bhushan Bahree, senior director for OPEC and Middle East research at the analysis firm IHS. “They have to decide how much room to make, if any, for North American supply growth.”

Without a cut in output, global supply is on track to exceed demand by 1.2 million barrels per day next year. If that comes to pass, oil prices would almost certainly decline further. Even a modest announced cut of 500,000 barrels per day, or adherence to current OPEC quotas, might not be enough to stop the slide in prices.

Already, the global price of oil has fallen 32 percent since late June,

to $78 a barrel, from $115. This has been a boon for consumers, airlines and shippers. The U.S. national average retail price of gasoline has fallen to a four-year low of $2.81 per gallon.

When OPEC meets Thursday, analysts expect members in dire financial positions such as Iran, Iraq, Nigeria and Venezuela to argue for a significant production cut. Their problem: They can’t afford to cut output themselves.

Saudi Arabia, by far OPEC’s biggest producer, is unlikely to agree to cut its own output enough to reverse the decline in global prices. It has large reserve funds that allow it to withstand long periods of lower prices. And it may have geopolitical reasons to keep prices subdued, at least for now.

For example, low oil prices may help pressure Iran to agree reach an agreement on its nuclear program.

Western countries have imposed economic sanctions on Iran, leading to a decrease in the country’s oil exports. Low oil prices are further shrinking Iran’s oil revenue. They are also squeezing the finances of Russia, which has supported Iran’s nuclear efforts.

Judith Dwarkin, chief oil economist at ITG Investment Research says that the retreat in oil prices is a natural result of years of high oil prices that inspired drillers around the world to find more oil. That could make it very difficult to reverse without some unexpected supply disruption in the volatile Middle East.

“It could be that the price rout has some more room to run,” she says.

Juncker unveils 315 bn plan to ‘kickstart’ EU economy

STRASBOURG, France - New EU Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker unveiled Wednesday an eagerly awaited 315-billion-euro investment plan to “kickstart” the economy, saying it would show the world that Europe was back in business after years of crisis.

Juncker said the proposal, which must be approved by European leaders at a summit in December, would mix an investment fund with a scheme to match new projects with private money.

“Europe needs a kickstart and today the commission is providing the jump cable,” Juncker told the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France.

“We need to send a message to Europe and to the rest of the world: Europe is back in business.”

The new European Fund for Strategic Investment will be funded to the tune of 21 billion euros, but Juncker said its work will have a net effect on the economy of 15 times that, about 315 billion euros ($390 billion).

The plan is the cornerstone of Juncker’s five-year agenda to revive the EU’s moribund economy, which has failed to grow since the financial crisis and is mired in mass unemployment and near-deflation.

When he took office on November 1, Juncker had promised to unveil the

plan by Christmas so that it could be up and running as soon as possible amid renewed global concerns over Europe.

“I promised to present an ambitious investment package by christmas. Today Christmas has come early.”

The former Luxembourg prime minister rejected criticisms that the fund contains no new money and only re-engineers existing funds.

“I often hear what we need is so called fresh money but what I believe we need is a fresh start and fresh investment,” Juncker said, speaking mainly in English. “The money we are putting forward today comes on top of what already exists.”

The run-up to the announcement has been dominated by a controversy over tax breaks offered by Luxembourg to major international firms when Juncker was premier.

Juncker faces a confidence vote in the European Parliament on Thursday after eurosceptic lawmakers filed a motion against him, but he is almost certain to survive.

It is usually done by the player dancing the Rangda effigy. In this scene, it is filled with matebekan (stabbing kris dagger in the chest) performed by the other players against the Rangda.

In this session, the performing area will usually turn magical, horrific and creepy. If the dancers have come into trance, the stabbers will stab themselves with the kris dagger. The more horrific atmosphere happens when living players are given a mantra and then act as a dead person (corpse). Afterward, the body is consecrated (as in cremation).

Then, they are taken to cemetery. Mystical atmosphere is strongly felt in the show at this scene.

Calonarang is indeed a special performing art that cannot be staged arbitrarily. However, after the development of tourism, the Calonarang is also staged for tourist entertainment.

However, time and type of ceremony is not made specifically. AA Gde Raka, a religious philosopher, said the Calonarang dance-drama was actually a ritual event where the sanctified effigies in the form of Rangda and Barong venerated were taken down and danced. The Calonarang itself was performed on the piodalan (temple anniversary) in

the Dalem Temple and other temples.

Players getting involved in the Calonarang attraction were those specifically having high spiritual knowledge and the arts.

According to him, the story of Calonarang was inseparable from the concept of rwa bhineda or basic dualism such as the quality of good and bad being always side by side. The Calonarang story was taken from a fairy tale on a widow named Walu Nateng Girah from Girah village, Kediri. Walu meant widow, Nateng (Queen) and Girah was the name of a village in Kediri, East Java. Therefore, Walu Nateng Girah meant a widow queen from Girah village. Walu Nateng Girah is a disciple of left school representing the adharma.

Meanwhile, the King Airlangga is the follower of goodness representing the dharma. “It has significance that in this life good and bad qualities are inseparable,” he said.

In that struggle, none of Mpu Bharadah and Nateng Girah won symbolizing that good and bad was inseparable. The staging of Calonarang performance was not entertainment art, but due to influence of globalization, many Calonarang performances then led to profane art, too.

According to Gde Raka, the word Calonarang was derived from the word arang meaning the ash related to plague caused by Nateng Girah where the Girah village was like to have been transformed into ashes because many people were sick and died.

Calonarang performance was usually commenced with the presence of barong dance, telek dance and followed by the emergence of young ladies. The next scene told about Walu Nateng Girah and her followers practicing black magic getting involved in a struggle against the forces of King Airlangga belonging to white school. (BTN)

“Financial literacy of women in Indonesia is still low compared to other countries. Malaysia and Thailand have 40 percent more, while we still have 19 percent,” said Commissioner Council Member in charge of Education Affairs and Consumer Protection of the OJK, Kusumaningtuti S. Soetiono, in Nusa Dua, Tuesday (Nov 25).

She said that OJK provided financial literacy program for all Indonesian people. One of the community targets for the financial literacy program was women group.

“Why women should receive a priority in the educational programs because they are always making decisions related to fi-

nancial expenditure for the short term, such as daily necessities,” she said.

According to her, the increase in women financial literacy was crucial for improving the welfare of society because the number of women reached 118 million.

Of these numbers, the women of productive age (15-64 years) reached 78 million or approximately 66 percent of the total female population. Women also played a key role as financial manager in the family.

“We have provided financial education program in 24 cities with the subject matter including the financial services sector and financial planning and financial education outreach program

for housewife, so that women have financial literacy,” she explained.

It was mentioned that through international seminar the OJK would like to exchange ideas and learn about financial literacy program from various countries and international organizations as well as share the results of financial education having been implemented by the OJK so that it would be beneficial for the improvement of literacy programs in the future.

“Our target in the future is improving financial literacy in women. In addition to SMEs, we also target school and university students,” she added. (kmb27)

Militia reinforcements contain damage in Ferguson Associated Press

FERGUSON, Missouri — State militia reinforcements helped contain the latest protests in Ferguson, preventing a second night of the chaos that led to arson and looting after a grand jury decided not to indict the white police officer who killed an unarmed black 18-year-old., a case that has inflamed racial tensions in the U.S. Demonstrators returned Tuesday to the riot-scarred streets of the St. Louis suburb. But with hundreds of additional troops standing watch over neighborhoods and businesses, the protests had far less destructive power than the previous night. However, officers still used some tear gas and pepper spray, and demonstrators set a squad car on fire and broke windows at City Hall.

As the tension in Ferguson eased somewhat, officer Darren Wilson broke his long public silence, insisting on national television that he could not have done anything differently in the confrontation with Michael Brown.

The decision announced Monday night means Wilson faces no state criminal charges in the Aug. 9 shooting in Ferguson, which reignited debates over relations between police and minority communities, even in cities far from Ferguson. The toll from Monday’s protests — 12 commercial buildings burned to the ground, plus eight other blazes and a dozen vehicles torched — prompted Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon to send a large contingent of extra National Guard state militia troops..

The governor ordered the initial force of 700 to be increased to

2,200 in hopes that their presence would help local law enforcement keep order in Fergyson. “Lives and property must be protected,” Nixon said. “This community deserves to have peace.”

Guard units protected the Ferguson Police Department and left crowd control, arrests and use of tear gas to local officers. In one commercial area Wednesday morning, a soldier was stationed at every few storefronts, and some were on rooftops.

Forty-four people were arrested, most for failure to disperse. Outside police headquarters, one woman was taken into custody after protesters hurled what appeared to be smoke bombs, flares and frozen water bottles at a line of officers. Several other protesters were arrested after defying police instructions to get out of the street or out of the way of police vehicles.

Protesters threw rocks, tent poles, and bottles — some containing urine — at officers. As the crowd dispersed early Wednesday, some threw rocks through the windows of a muffler shop and a used-car dealership near a painted mural that read “Peace for Ferguson.”

guson police force for less than three years before the Aug. 9 shooting. He told ABC that Brown’s shooting was the first time he had fired his gun on the job. Asked whether the encounter would have unfolded the same way if Brown had been white, Wilson said yes.

Wilson said in his grand jury testimony that he feared for his life during his confrontation with Brown, which he blamed on the big teenager, saying the theft suspect reached through his driver’s side window, hit him in the face, called him a “pussy” and tried grabbing his gun. Wilson then got off a shot that went through Brown’s hand, the only bullet that hit Brown at close range.

Wilson told ABC he felt like it was his duty to chase Brown after the

confrontation at his police vehicle.

When asked about witness accounts that Brown at one point turned toward Wilson and put his hands up, he responded “that would be incorrect.”

Brown fell to the ground about 153 feet (46 meters) from Wilson’s vehicle, fatally wounded by the last of the seven bullets that struck his body.

Public attention to the killing has frequently focused on the fact that Brown was unarmed. But whether or not Brown had a weapon makes little difference under Missouri law, which says police can act with deadly force when they believe it is necessary to arrest a person who may “endanger life or inflict serious physical injury.”

Attorneys for the Brown family vowed to push for federal civil rights charges against Wilson.

“We will see the calculation. What we wish is to push it towards two percent,” Finance Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro stated on Wednesday.

He noted that the budget deficit could drop below the initial estimate due to some additional income from various optimization efforts and cutting of non-urgent spendings.

The government is confident that it will get additional funds from the conversion of fuel subsidy to productive programs such as infrastructure development and social security worth between Rp110 trillion to Rp140 trillion.

In the meantime, President Joko Widodo has set a target of reducing official travel and meeting expenditures by Rp16 trillion and increasing tax revenue by up to Rp600 trillion in 2015.

The government will immediately include the additional income in the revised draft budget,

which will be submitted for discussion in the parliament in January 2015.

The government has earlier set several macroeconomic assumptions for the 2015 budget including economic growth rate at 5.8 percent, inflation at 4.4 percent, rupiah exchange rate at Rp11.9 thousand against the US dollar, and threemonth rate of state bond at 6.0 percent.

The assumption for Indonesia Crude Price has been set at US$105 per barrel, while the assumptions for oil lifting are set at 900 thousand barrels per day and gas at 1.248 million barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Based on the assumptions, state revenues are set at Rp1,793.6 trillion while state expenditures at Rp2,039.5 trillion, thereby leaving a budget deficit of Rp245.9 trillion or 2.21 percent of the GDP.

IERAPETRA, Greece — Hampered by gale-force winds and high waves, a Greek navy frigate was slowly towing a crippled freighter crammed with hundreds of migrants to safety on the southern island of Crete Wednesday.

A day after it suffered engine failure in international waters, the 77-meter (250-foot) Baris cargo ship carrying some 700 men, women and children trying to enter Europe clandestinely — one of the largest boatloads of the sort in recent years — was being towed at a speed of about three knots (3.4 miles per hour).

By midday Wednesday it had covered about a third of the way, and was expected to arrive well after nightfall at the port town of Ierapetra in southern

Crete. The coast guard said initial indications suggested passengers included Syrians and Afghans heading for Italy.

It was unclear where from, and when, the Kiribati-flagged ship had set sail.

About 80 percent of immigrants arriving by sea at Greece’s eastern Aegean Sea islands are Syrians fleeing the country’s civil war, according to the Doctors Without Borders humanitarian organization’s Greek branch.

Tens of thousands of people risk the hazardous journey every year, paying smuggling gangs to carry them over in usually unseaworthy craft ranging from toy dinghies to aging rust-buckets.

Once near the Cretan coast, the vessel was expected to anchor offshore but it was unclear if the migrants would be immediately ferried to land.

Just days before the freighter ran into trouble, 228 Syrian refugees heading for Italy were rescued from a crippled ship off Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean. EU regulations stipulate refugees seeking asylum must apply in the first EU country they arrive at.

KPK to re-summon Hartanto Edhie Wibowo Antara

J A K A RTA - T h e C o r r u p t i o n Eradication Commission (KPK) announced that it will summon Hartanto Edhie Wibowo for investigation into a corruption case related to the Sports School and Education and Training Center (P3SON) construction project in Hambalang.

“We will summon him again because he (Hartanto Edhie Wibowo) did not honor the previous call,” KPK Vice Chairman Busyro Muqoddas stated on Wednesday.

According to Muqoddas, the KPK will continue to summon suspects or witnesses in accordance with the law until they comply with the commission’s call.

“If he does not attend the call until the determined period, he will be im-

mediately arrested,” he affirmed.

Earlier, on Friday (November 7), the KPK had summoned Wibowo in connection with a corruption case related to the P3SON construction project in Hambalang that named Director of PT Dutasari Citra Laras Machfud Suroso a suspect.

“He (Wibowo) was examined as a witness in a corruption case in which Suroso is named a suspect,” KPK spokesman Priharsa Nugraha noted.

Wibowo, the youngest sibling of Ani Yudhoyono, was investigated in his capacity as the treasurer of the Puri Cikeas Foundation. He was a politician from the Democratic Party and a former member of the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission VII overseeing the energy and mining sector.

President vows to end illegal fishing in Indonesian waters Antara

MERAK, Banten - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has reiterated his governments stance to end fish theft carried out by foreign vessels in Indonesian waters.

“We are serious about combating illegal fishing,” the president informed newsmen on board the KMP Portlink III, which was crossing the Sunda Strait en route from Merak, Banten, to Bakauheni in Lampung on Tuesday.

President Jokowi emphatically stated that there should no longer be illegal fishing activities that deplete the marine resources and fisheries in Indonesia.

The head of state also revealed that he has held a cabinet meeting with the coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs; the law and human rights minister; and the Navy chief of staff; among others, to discuss ways to combat illegal fishing activities.

As of November 2014, the Ministry of Maritime and Fisheries has detained 35 fishing boats, caught committing illegal fishing in Indonesian waters.

“The efforts to uphold the laws and regulations in the field of marine and fisheries continue to be undertaken through a surveillance operation of marine resources and fisheries,” Maritime and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti recently noted in Jakarta.

According to her, the surveillance operation was important due to the

presence of illegal fishing vessels that failed to comply with the existing regulations in Indonesia and posed a threat to the sustainable management of marine resources and fisheries in the country.

She remarked that the Maritime and Fisheries Ministry has taken decisive steps against Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, a global problem that threatens ocean ecosystems and sustainable fisheries.

“Efforts to eradicate illegal fishing activities are also being made through surveillance operations and cooperation with various parties who have the authority to enforce the law at sea,” she affirmed.

The minister stated that the Maritime and Fisheries Ministry has set itself a target in the next six months to make the Natuna waters in Riau Islands free of illegal fishing activities carried out by foreign vessels.

She noted that based on preliminary data, the 35 vessels detained by the ministry were from Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines, among other things.

To continue monitoring the activities of illegal fishing vessels from foreign countries, she said the Maritime and Fisheries Ministry is deploying radar satellite imagery technology and vessel monitoring system (VMS), a satellite-based monitoring system that provides data at regular intervals to the fisheries authorities regarding the location, course, and speed of a vessel.

Ducati’s rules break hurt MotoGP’s leading non-factory teams in 2014, reckons Yamaha chief Lin Jarvis. At the start of the year Ducati controversially chose to run to ‘Open’ regulations, allowing greater development scope plus tyre and fuel advantages in exchange for running a standard ECU. Yamaha and Honda’s satellite teams Tech 3, Gresini and LCR remained under ‘Factory’ rules, and Jarvis believes they were deprived of chances to star because of Ducati’s dispensations.

“For the factory teams it’s not a big issue, because with four riders at the front, Ducati’s advantage has not really affected the championship,” said Jarvis. “I think it’s made it a bit difficult for some of the satellite teams to maintain motivation.

Three days after breaking a Spanish league record that had stood since 1955, Messi was again unstoppable.

“Messi is the best player of all time ... a player who will continue to surprise us for a long time to come,” Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said. The Argentine scored his first goal in the 38th minute of the Group F match after redirecting Brazilian midfielder Rafihna’s shot from 20 yards out.

Blatter has said he wants replays to be tested in a domestic league and at next year’s Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand, giving coaches the right once or twice in each half to challenge a refereeing decision.

But the International Football Association Board says it is “skeptical” about whether any form of video replays would work, questioning their success in other sports.

FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke adds “we have to understand exactly what it means in regards to the change within the game and the support from the referees to do so.”

SAO PAULO — Doctors say Brazilian soccer great Pele has a urinary infection.

The Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo says the infection was diagnosed after the three-time World Cup winner underwent a series of exams after being admitted for a medical evaluation late Monday.

The hospital said in a statement on Tuesday that the 74-year-old Pele is “stable.” No other details were immediately available.

Pele was released from the same hospital less than 10 days ago after successfully undergoing surgery to remove kidney stones.

Ducati’s rules break hurt MotoGP’s leading non-factory teams in 2014, reckons Yamaha chief Lin Jarvis. At the start of the year Ducati controversially chose to run to ‘Open’ regulations, allowing greater development scope plus tyre and fuel advantages in exchange for running a standard ECU. Yamaha and Honda’s satellite teams Tech 3, Gresini and LCR remained under ‘Factory’ rules, and Jarvis believes they were deprived of chances to star because of Ducati’s dispensations.

Militia reinforcements contain damage in Ferguson Associated Press

FERGUSON, Missouri — State militia reinforcements helped contain the latest protests in Ferguson, preventing a second night of the chaos that led to arson and looting after a grand jury decided not to indict the white police officer who killed an unarmed black 18-year-old., a case that has inflamed racial tensions in the U.S. Demonstrators returned Tuesday to the riot-scarred streets of the St. Louis suburb. But with hundreds of additional troops standing watch over neighborhoods and businesses, the protests had far less destructive power than the previous night. However, officers still used some tear gas and pepper spray, and demonstrators set a squad car on fire and broke windows at City Hall.

As the tension in Ferguson eased somewhat, officer Darren Wilson broke his long public silence, insisting on national television that he could not have done anything differently in the confrontation with Michael Brown.

The decision announced Monday night means Wilson faces no state criminal charges in the Aug. 9 shooting in Ferguson, which reignited debates over relations between police and minority communities, even in cities far from Ferguson. The toll from Monday’s protests — 12 commercial buildings burned to the ground, plus eight other blazes and a dozen vehicles torched — prompted Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon to send a large contingent of extra National Guard state militia troops..

The governor ordered the initial force of 700 to be increased to

2,200 in hopes that their presence would help local law enforcement keep order in Fergyson. “Lives and property must be protected,” Nixon said. “This community deserves to have peace.”

Guard units protected the Ferguson Police Department and left crowd control, arrests and use of tear gas to local officers. In one commercial area Wednesday morning, a soldier was stationed at every few storefronts, and some were on rooftops.

Forty-four people were arrested, most for failure to disperse. Outside police headquarters, one woman was taken into custody after protesters hurled what appeared to be smoke bombs, flares and frozen water bottles at a line of officers. Several other protesters were arrested after defying police instructions to get out of the street or out of the way of police vehicles.

Protesters threw rocks, tent poles, and bottles — some containing urine — at officers. As the crowd dispersed early Wednesday, some threw rocks through the windows of a muffler shop and a used-car dealership near a painted mural that read “Peace for Ferguson.”

guson police force for less than three years before the Aug. 9 shooting. He told ABC that Brown’s shooting was the first time he had fired his gun on the job. Asked whether the encounter would have unfolded the same way if Brown had been white, Wilson said yes.

Wilson said in his grand jury testimony that he feared for his life during his confrontation with Brown, which he blamed on the big teenager, saying the theft suspect reached through his driver’s side window, hit him in the face, called him a “pussy” and tried grabbing his gun. Wilson then got off a shot that went through Brown’s hand, the only bullet that hit Brown at close range.

Wilson told ABC he felt like it was his duty to chase Brown after the

confrontation at his police vehicle.

When asked about witness accounts that Brown at one point turned toward Wilson and put his hands up, he responded “that would be incorrect.”

Brown fell to the ground about 153 feet (46 meters) from Wilson’s vehicle, fatally wounded by the last of the seven bullets that struck his body.

Public attention to the killing has frequently focused on the fact that Brown was unarmed. But whether or not Brown had a weapon makes little difference under Missouri law, which says police can act with deadly force when they believe it is necessary to arrest a person who may “endanger life or inflict serious physical injury.”

Attorneys for the Brown family vowed to push for federal civil rights charges against Wilson.

“We will see the calculation. What we wish is to push it towards two percent,” Finance Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro stated on Wednesday.

He noted that the budget deficit could drop below the initial estimate due to some additional income from various optimization efforts and cutting of non-urgent spendings.

The government is confident that it will get additional funds from the conversion of fuel subsidy to productive programs such as infrastructure development and social security worth between Rp110 trillion to Rp140 trillion.

In the meantime, President Joko Widodo has set a target of reducing official travel and meeting expenditures by Rp16 trillion and increasing tax revenue by up to Rp600 trillion in 2015.

The government will immediately include the additional income in the revised draft budget,

which will be submitted for discussion in the parliament in January 2015.

The government has earlier set several macroeconomic assumptions for the 2015 budget including economic growth rate at 5.8 percent, inflation at 4.4 percent, rupiah exchange rate at Rp11.9 thousand against the US dollar, and threemonth rate of state bond at 6.0 percent.

The assumption for Indonesia Crude Price has been set at US$105 per barrel, while the assumptions for oil lifting are set at 900 thousand barrels per day and gas at 1.248 million barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Based on the assumptions, state revenues are set at Rp1,793.6 trillion while state expenditures at Rp2,039.5 trillion, thereby leaving a budget deficit of Rp245.9 trillion or 2.21 percent of the GDP.

IERAPETRA, Greece — Hampered by gale-force winds and high waves, a Greek navy frigate was slowly towing a crippled freighter crammed with hundreds of migrants to safety on the southern island of Crete Wednesday.

A day after it suffered engine failure in international waters, the 77-meter (250-foot) Baris cargo ship carrying some 700 men, women and children trying to enter Europe clandestinely — one of the largest boatloads of the sort in recent years — was being towed at a speed of about three knots (3.4 miles per hour).

By midday Wednesday it had covered about a third of the way, and was expected to arrive well after nightfall at the port town of Ierapetra in southern

Crete. The coast guard said initial indications suggested passengers included Syrians and Afghans heading for Italy.

It was unclear where from, and when, the Kiribati-flagged ship had set sail.

About 80 percent of immigrants arriving by sea at Greece’s eastern Aegean Sea islands are Syrians fleeing the country’s civil war, according to the Doctors Without Borders humanitarian organization’s Greek branch.

Tens of thousands of people risk the hazardous journey every year, paying smuggling gangs to carry them over in usually unseaworthy craft ranging from toy dinghies to aging rust-buckets.

Most end up in Italy. According to Amnesty International data, since the start of 2014 more than 2,500 have drowned or gone missing — about 1.7 percent of the estimated 150,000 who

Once near the Cretan coast, the vessel was expected to anchor offshore but it was unclear if the migrants would be immediately ferried to land.

Just days before the freighter ran into trouble, 228 Syrian refugees heading for Italy were rescued from a crippled ship off Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean. EU regulations stipulate refugees seeking asylum must apply in the first EU country they arrive at.

KPK to re-summon Hartanto Edhie Wibowo Antara

J A K A RTA - T h e C o r r u p t i o n Eradication Commission (KPK) announced that it will summon Hartanto Edhie Wibowo for investigation into a corruption case related to the Sports School and Education and Training Center (P3SON) construction project in Hambalang.

“We will summon him again because he (Hartanto Edhie Wibowo) did not honor the previous call,” KPK Vice Chairman Busyro Muqoddas stated on Wednesday.

According to Muqoddas, the KPK will continue to summon suspects or witnesses in accordance with the law until they comply with the commission’s call.

“If he does not attend the call until the determined period, he will be im-

mediately arrested,” he affirmed.

Earlier, on Friday (November 7), the KPK had summoned Wibowo in connection with a corruption case related to the P3SON construction project in Hambalang that named Director of PT Dutasari Citra Laras Machfud Suroso a suspect.

“He (Wibowo) was examined as a witness in a corruption case in which Suroso is named a suspect,” KPK spokesman Priharsa Nugraha noted.

Wibowo, the youngest sibling of Ani Yudhoyono, was investigated in his capacity as the treasurer of the Puri Cikeas Foundation. He was a politician from the Democratic Party and a former member of the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission VII overseeing the energy and mining sector.

President vows to end illegal fishing in Indonesian waters Antara

MERAK, Banten - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has reiterated his governments stance to end fish theft carried out by foreign vessels in Indonesian waters.

“We are serious about combating illegal fishing,” the president informed newsmen on board the KMP Portlink III, which was crossing the Sunda Strait en route from Merak, Banten, to Bakauheni in Lampung on Tuesday.

President Jokowi emphatically stated that there should no longer be illegal fishing activities that deplete the marine resources and fisheries in Indonesia.

The head of state also revealed that he has held a cabinet meeting with the coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs; the law and human rights minister; and the Navy chief of staff; among others, to discuss ways to combat illegal fishing activities.

As of November 2014, the Ministry of Maritime and Fisheries has detained 35 fishing boats, caught committing illegal fishing in Indonesian waters.

“The efforts to uphold the laws and regulations in the field of marine and fisheries continue to be undertaken through a surveillance operation of marine resources and fisheries,” Maritime and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti recently noted in Jakarta.

According to her, the surveillance operation was important due to the

presence of illegal fishing vessels that failed to comply with the existing regulations in Indonesia and posed a threat to the sustainable management of marine resources and fisheries in the country.

She remarked that the Maritime and Fisheries Ministry has taken decisive steps against Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, a global problem that threatens ocean ecosystems and sustainable fisheries.

“Efforts to eradicate illegal fishing activities are also being made through surveillance operations and cooperation with various parties who have the authority to enforce the law at sea,” she affirmed.

The minister stated that the Maritime and Fisheries Ministry has set itself a target in the next six months to make the Natuna waters in Riau Islands free of illegal fishing activities carried out by foreign vessels.

She noted that based on preliminary data, the 35 vessels detained by the ministry were from Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines, among other things.

To continue monitoring the activities of illegal fishing vessels from foreign countries, she said the Maritime and Fisheries Ministry is deploying radar satellite imagery technology and vessel monitoring system (VMS), a satellite-based monitoring system that provides data at regular intervals to the fisheries authorities regarding the location, course, and speed of a vessel.

NEW YORK — These are the moments OPEC exists for: A sharp drop in global oil prices has reduced the amount of money OPEC countries take in by nearly $1 billion a day.

The 12-member group’s purpose is to coordinate how much oil is produced in order to keep prices high and stable and maximize member countries’ revenue while making sure global demand for oil stays strong. A steep, coordinated cut in output could stop and possibly reverse what has been a 32 percent decline in prices over five months.

But there is widespread doubt that OPEC will be able to do much of anything when it meets in Vienna later this week — doubt sent oil down another 2 percent Tuesday.

Analysts think OPEC members won’t agree to a cut or the cut will be too small to influence oil prices.

They could also, as in the past, agree to lower production but then fail to stick to the target.

That could mean further declines in the price of oil, along with fuels such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.

“The idea that this is a cartel that places meaningful restrictions on its members’ behavior is fiction,” says Jeff Colgan, a political science professor at Brown University’s Watson Institute who studies OPEC. “OPEC countries do exactly what we would expect them to do if there were no such thing as OPEC.” OPEC is at a crossroads. The group, which produces 30 million barrels of oil per day, one-third of

global liquid fuel demand, is facing the most pronounced decline in oil prices since the financial crisis hit in 2008. And the world now is drastically different. Oil production outside of OPEC is surging for the first time in a generation, boosting global oil supplies. U.S. production has risen 70 percent since 2008, adding 3.5 million barrels of oil per day. The increase itself is more than any OPEC member produces other than Saudi Arabia.

At the same time, OPEC members around the world — those in the Middle East and North Africa, along with countries such as Venezuela and Nigeria — are undergoing wrenching political upheaval that is putting extraordinary pressure on government budgets.

OPEC countries need oil money more than ever, making the steep cuts in production that would be necessary to push up prices all but impossible.

“They have quite a task in front of them,” says Bhushan Bahree, senior director for OPEC and Middle East research at the analysis firm IHS. “They have to decide how much room to make, if any, for North American supply growth.”

Without a cut in output, global supply is on track to exceed demand by 1.2 million barrels per day next year. If that comes to pass, oil prices would almost certainly decline further. Even a modest announced cut of 500,000 barrels per day, or adherence to current OPEC quotas, might not be enough to stop the slide in prices.

Already, the global price of oil has fallen 32 percent since late June,

to $78 a barrel, from $115. This has been a boon for consumers, airlines and shippers. The U.S. national average retail price of gasoline has fallen to a four-year low of $2.81 per gallon.

When OPEC meets Thursday, analysts expect members in dire financial positions such as Iran, Iraq, Nigeria and Venezuela to argue for a significant production cut. Their problem: They can’t afford to cut output themselves.

Saudi Arabia, by far OPEC’s biggest producer, is unlikely to agree to cut its own output enough to reverse the decline in global prices. It has large reserve funds that allow it to withstand long periods of lower prices. And it may have geopolitical reasons to keep prices subdued, at least for now.

For example, low oil prices may help pressure Iran to agree reach an agreement on its nuclear program.

Western countries have imposed economic sanctions on Iran, leading to a decrease in the country’s oil exports. Low oil prices are further shrinking Iran’s oil revenue. They are also squeezing the finances of Russia, which has supported Iran’s nuclear efforts.

Judith Dwarkin, chief oil economist at ITG Investment Research says that the retreat in oil prices is a natural result of years of high oil prices that inspired drillers around the world to find more oil. That could make it very difficult to reverse without some unexpected supply disruption in the volatile Middle East.

“It could be that the price rout has some more room to run,” she says.

Juncker unveils 315 bn plan to ‘kickstart’ EU economy

STRASBOURG, France - New EU Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker unveiled Wednesday an eagerly awaited 315-billion-euro investment plan to “kickstart” the economy, saying it would show the world that Europe was back in business after years of crisis.

Juncker said the proposal, which must be approved by European leaders at a summit in December, would mix an investment fund with a scheme to match new projects with private money.

“Europe needs a kickstart and today the commission is providing the jump cable,” Juncker told the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France.

“We need to send a message to Europe and to the rest of the world: Europe is back in business.”

The new European Fund for Strategic Investment will be funded to the tune of 21 billion euros, but Juncker said its work will have a net effect on the economy of 15 times that, about 315 billion euros ($390 billion).

The plan is the cornerstone of Juncker’s five-year agenda to revive the EU’s moribund economy, which has failed to grow since the financial crisis and is mired in mass unemployment and near-deflation.

When he took office on November 1, Juncker had promised to unveil the

plan by Christmas so that it could be up and running as soon as possible amid renewed global concerns over Europe.

“I promised to present an ambitious investment package by christmas. Today Christmas has come early.”

The former Luxembourg prime minister rejected criticisms that the fund contains no new money and only re-engineers existing funds.

“I often hear what we need is so called fresh money but what I believe we need is a fresh start and fresh investment,” Juncker said, speaking mainly in English. “The money we are putting forward today comes on top of what already exists.”

The run-up to the announcement has been dominated by a controversy over tax breaks offered by Luxembourg to major international firms when Juncker was premier.

Juncker faces a confidence vote in the European Parliament on Thursday after eurosceptic lawmakers filed a motion against him, but he is almost certain to survive.

Frequently, it is also graced by the contest of shakti power between the dancers and people having magical powers. It is commonly carried out in the ‘invitation’ scene, where the dancers invite people to get involved in a magical power contest.

It is usually done by the player dancing the Rangda effigy. In this scene, it is filled with matebekan (stabbing kris dagger in the chest) performed by the other players against the Rangda.

In this session, the performing area will usually turn magical, horrific and creepy. If the dancers have come into trance, the stabbers will stab themselves with the kris dagger. The more horrific atmosphere happens when living players are given a mantra and then act as a dead person (corpse). Afterward, the body is consecrated (as in cremation).

Then, they are taken to cemetery. Mystical atmosphere is strongly felt in the show at this scene.

Calonarang is indeed a special performing art that cannot be staged arbitrarily. However, after the development of tourism, the Calonarang is also staged for tourist entertainment.

However, time and type of ceremony is not made specifically. AA Gde Raka, a religious philosopher, said the Calonarang dance-drama was actually a ritual event where the sanctified effigies in the form of Rangda and Barong venerated were taken down and danced. The Calonarang itself was performed on the piodalan (temple anniversary) in

the Dalem Temple and other temples.

Players getting involved in the Calonarang attraction were those specifically having high spiritual knowledge and the arts.

According to him, the story of Calonarang was inseparable from the concept of rwa bhineda or basic dualism such as the quality of good and bad being always side by side. The Calonarang story was taken from a fairy tale on a widow named Walu Nateng Girah from Girah village, Kediri. Walu meant widow, Nateng (Queen) and Girah was the name of a village in Kediri, East Java. Therefore, Walu Nateng Girah meant a widow queen from Girah village. Walu Nateng Girah is a disciple of left school representing the adharma.

Meanwhile, the King Airlangga is the follower of goodness representing the dharma. “It has significance that in this life good and bad qualities are inseparable,” he said.

In that struggle, none of Mpu Bharadah and Nateng Girah won symbolizing that good and bad was inseparable. The staging of Calonarang performance was not entertainment art, but due to influence of globalization, many Calonarang performances then led to profane art, too.

According to Gde Raka, the word Calonarang was derived from the word arang meaning the ash related to plague caused by Nateng Girah where the Girah village was like to have been transformed into ashes because many people were sick and died.

Calonarang performance was usually commenced with the presence of barong dance, telek dance and followed by the emergence of young ladies. The next scene told about Walu Nateng Girah and her followers practicing black magic getting involved in a struggle against the forces of King Airlangga belonging to white school. (BTN)

“Financial literacy of women in Indonesia is still low compared to other countries. Malaysia and Thailand have 40 percent more, while we still have 19 percent,” said Commissioner Council Member in charge of Education Affairs and Consumer Protection of the OJK, Kusumaningtuti S. Soetiono, in Nusa Dua, Tuesday (Nov 25).

She said that OJK provided financial literacy program for all Indonesian people. One of the community targets for the financial literacy program was women group.

“Why women should receive a priority in the educational programs because they are always making decisions related to fi-

nancial expenditure for the short term, such as daily necessities,” she said.

According to her, the increase in women financial literacy was crucial for improving the welfare of society because the number of women reached 118 million.

Of these numbers, the women of productive age (15-64 years) reached 78 million or approximately 66 percent of the total female population. Women also played a key role as financial manager in the family.

“We have provided financial education program in 24 cities with the subject matter including the financial services sector and financial planning and financial education outreach program

for housewife, so that women have financial literacy,” she explained.

It was mentioned that through international seminar the OJK would like to exchange ideas and learn about financial literacy program from various countries and international organizations as well as share the results of financial education having been implemented by the OJK so that it would be beneficial for the improvement of literacy programs in the future.

“Our target in the future is improving financial literacy in women. In addition to SMEs, we also target school and university students,” she added. (kmb27)

SINGARAJA - Due to the impact of fuel price hike, a number of traders at Anyar Market Singaraja raised the price of chili to IDR 50,000 per kilogram. The increase in the price of chili already occurred two days before. Allegedly traders were forced to raise the price considering the stock of chili at the market began to run thin.

One of the local chili traders, Nyoman Kariasa, said on Tuesday (Nov 25) that he raised the price as the chili because the stocks at the market tended to decrease.

Moreover, the price of cayenne pepper rose from IDR 48,000 to IDR 50,000 per kilogram. Then, red chili increased from IDR 45,000 to IDR 48,000. By and large, the

traders did not sell chili as many as on regular days. He claimed the price hike of chili had occurred for five times gradually before the fuel price hike was announced by

central government. “Chili stock at collector level begins to decrease and the price is then increased due to declining stock. Price hike has often occurred after the announcement of the fuel price hike since a few days ago,” he said.

Kariasa explained that every day he sold around 25 kg of chili. But due to restricted number of chili stock, he could only sell about 15 kg per day. The decrease in sales of

chili happened due to restrictions on the purchase from the collectors.

Traders eventually went through decline in sales volume of about 50 percent and the chili buyers were getting fewer at the market. “The number of chili buyers begins to decline after the fuel price hike. Price hike does not only occur in chili, but also in other food ingredients.

NEGARA - The number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Jembrana continues to rise each year and this condition kindles a concern among the circle of Jembrana House. Actually, local government has owned a Regional Bylaw (Perda) No.1/2008 on HIV and AIDS Mitigation. KATMANDU — South Asian leaders, including from rivals India and Pakistan, gathered in Nepal’s capital Wednesday to boost cooperation in trade and energy and seek greater peace in the region, home to more than a fifth of the world’s population.

Carbs more harmful than saturated fats Agence France-Presse

WASHINGTON - Long-derided saturated fats -- associated with an array of health problems such as heart disease -- caught a break Friday when research revealed their intake could be doubled or even nearly tripled without driving up their level in a person’s blood.

Carbohydrates, meanwhile, are associated with heightened levels of a fatty acid linked to increased risk for diabetes and heart disease, the same study showed.

“The point is you don’t necessarily save the saturated fat that you eat, and the primary regulator of what you save in terms of fat is the carbohydrate in your diet,” senior author Jeff Volek of Ohio State University, said in the report.

To conduct the study, which appeared in the journal PLOS ONE, scientists put 16 participants on a strict dietary regime that lasted four and a half months.

Every three weeks their diets were changed to adjust carbohydrate and total fat and saturated fat levels.

The scientists found that when carbs were reduced and saturated fat

was increased, total saturated fat in the blood did not increase, and even went down in most people.

The fatty acid called palmitoleic acid, which is associated with “unhealthy metabolism of carbohydrates that can promote disease,” went down with low-carb diets and gradually increased as carbs were re-introduced, the study said.

An increase in this fatty acid indicates that a growing proportion of carbohydrates is being converted into fat instead of being burned by the body, the researchers said.

“When you consume a very lowcarb diet your body preferentially burns saturated fat,” Volek said.

“We had people eat two times more saturated fat than they had been eating before entering the study, yet when we measured

saturated fat in their blood, it went down in the majority of people,” he said.

The finding “challenges the conventional wisdom that has demonized saturated fat and extends our knowledge of why dietary saturated fat doesn’t correlate with disease,” Volek added.

By the end of the trial, participants saw “significant improvements” in blood glucose, insulin and blood pressure and lost an average of 22 pounds (10 kilograms).

“There is widespread misunderstanding about saturated fat. In population studies, there’s clearly no association of dietary saturated fat and heart disease, yet dietary guidelines continue to advocate restriction of saturated fat. That’s not scientific and not smart,” Volek said.

WASHINGTON - Experts said Monday regular tests for vitamin D levels are not proven to be beneficial or harmful, despite previous research warning of damaging effects of vitamin D deficiencies in adults.

Studies have found that low levels of the vitamin can increase the risk of bone fractures, heart disease, colorectal cancer, diabetes, depression, Alzheimer’s disease and death.

But the US Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) said there was no evidence that getting regularly tested for sufficient vitamin D decreased health risks.

“Current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of screening for vitamin D deficiency in asymptomatic adults,” USPSTF said in a statement.

“We found no direct evidence on effects of screening for vitamin D deficiency versus no screening on clinical outcomes.”

The experts from the federal panel said that tests should be ordered on a case-by-case basis and should not be conducted universally.

People get vitamin D from sunlight and from oily fish such as salmon, tuna or mackerel, as well as milk, eggs and cheese. It is also available in supplement form and is a key component for healthy bones and muscle strength.

A 2010 report by the US Institute of Medicine concluded that vitamin D was essential for bone health but did not find that a deficiency causes disease.

The Institute recommends 600 milligrams per day for adults under 70 years old and 800 milligrams for older people.

A recent study in the British Medical Journal based on medical records from 95,766 people in Denmark found that reduced vitamin D levels increased the risk of mortality by 30 percent and boosted the risk of cancer-related deaths by 40 percent.

However, the researchers found no link between vitamin D deficiency and cardiovascular deaths.

About one billion around the globe are thought to have low vitamin D levels.

The elderly can be particularly vulnerable to such a deficiency because their skin is less adept at converting sunlight into vitamin D.

Americans are smoking less than ever

WASHINGTON - The percentage of Americans who are smokers has fallen to an all-time low, now representing just 17.8 percent of the population, a study released Tuesday found.

US health officials said the percentage of Americans who are smokers has fallen to the lowest level since 1965, when they began keeping records.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the number of American adults smokers fell from 45.1 million in 2005, or 20.9 percent of the USA population at the time, to 42.1 million.

Despite progress in reducing the overall number of US smokers, rates remained on the high side for some groups, particularly lower-income people, as well as gays and lesbians, the CDC said.

Smoking accounts for one in five US deaths annually, taking more than 480,000 lives.

According to US government data, smoking costs the economy more than $289 billion a year for medical care and lost productivity.

DENPASAR - Mixed cassava cake is one of the simple and affordable cakes of the Hindu community in Bali. Rural people love very much this kind of cake. Moreover, farmers often enjoy it as a substitute for rice. Its main ingredient is cassava mixed with sticky rice, grated coconut, brown sugar and salt.

In the past, people made the cassava a staple food. Understandably, the rice was very expensive at that time, even it was hard to get. At least, the cassava was cut into small pieces and then boiled and sprinkled with salt.

To get different flavors, people made the cakes in various preparations.

One of them is this mixed cassava cake.

The making of it is very simple. First of all, cassava is peeled and cut into small elongated shape. Alternatively, people can also use a slicer.

Before that, prepare sticky rice at adequate amount. It is then soaked for 24 hours and then drained. The cassava and sticky rice are steamed for about 10 minutes. Take out when they have been cooked.

Afterward, prepare brown sugar sauce and grated coconut. Add a little salt to the grated coconut so that it has a flavor. How to serve it? At first, prepare a dish and banana leaf as the base. Take an adequate amount of cassava cake and mixed with grated coconut. Having well mixed, top it with brown sugar sauce to taste.

Generally the crafters of Ambengan village, Sukasada subdistrict, Buleleng, get raw materials from location around the village and then they are processed into various kinds of interesting crafts.

The increasing price of banana sheath happened due to weather condition that was very much felt by craftsmen. Usually they purchased at IDR 500 per sheet and then it increased to IDR 750 per sheet. People expect the erratic weather condition would not dampen the price of banana sheath craft at the market although the raw materials began to be difficult to obtain in the field. “Quality of the craft can reduce because it is quite difficult to get banana sheath when entering rainy season. Typically the craftsmen get banana sheath in West Buleleng, but now the quantity of raw materials began to decline,” said Ketut Rasio, the maker of photograph frame and album made from banana sheath, Monday (Nov 24).

Other than weather condition, the price hike of raw materials was also influenced by the increase in the fuel price. Furthermore, the other raw materials in use included sea sand brought in from NTT, NTB and Lombok. Meanwhile, another material was leucaena leaves obtained from Banyuwangi, East Java. Craftsmen

assessed the increase in the fuel price was the main reason for the raw material collectors to increase the price. To overcome the problems and obstacles in the field, Ketut Rasio temporarily stopped the export. He planned to export again in 2015.

“The price hike of raw materials is influenced by weather condition and fuel price hike. The making and delivery of the craft is hampered by the raw materials. Our export will be stopped first and we are waiting for the decline in the price of raw material,” he explained.

During the making of photo frame and album crafts for two years, the most dominant export destination included the Hawaii, Jamaica, Venezuela and Mexico. In one shipment, the number of photograph frame and album exported could reach 5,000 pieces. On average, the export commodities were worth hundreds of millions of rupiahs. He pointed out that Galungan village area and Lemukih village in Sawan subdistrict had been monitored within the past few days and coordination had been made with relevant authorities

in the event of a disaster so that relief effort could run optimally.

Similar efforts were also done by targeting several villages prone to landslides in Sukasada subdistrict.

He hoped the lowest apparatus could remind the residents to stay vigilant and responsive to the upcoming rainy season.

Prince vanishes from social media

NEW YORK - Prince, whose distaste for the music industry’s conventions is well known, has abruptly disappeared from social media after tentative efforts to promote his two new albums.

As of late Tuesday, the megastar’s Twitter and Facebook accounts had both disappeared and almost all videos from his official account had been taken off YouTube.

Prince offered no immediate commentary -- on social media or elsewhere -- on the reasons for the action.

But Prince’s two latest albums, which he released simultaneously in September, remained on the streaming service Spotify.

The move puts Prince at odds with most musicians, both newcomers and longtime stars, who have considered social media a virtual obligation to reach out to fans.

A number of stars -- most famously Taylor Swift -- have criticized Spotify, accusing it of

insufficient payouts to artists, but have nonetheless invested sustained energy in Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Prince had entered social media to promote the latest two albums but had barely disguised his lack of enthusiasm. He advertised a Facebook questionand-answer session after he joined the site but, after hours of queries, he responded to just one -- an esoteric matter about audio tuning -- by offering a link to an article.

The “Purple Rain” legend is known for bristling at the commercial advice of the music industry. Two decades ago, he wrote “slave” on his cheek and changed his name to the unpronounceable “love symbol” to protest his contractual terms with

Warner Brothers.

But Prince returned to Warner Brothers for his latest two albums -- “Art Official Age” and “Plectrumelectrum,” the latter performed with the all-female trio 3rdEyeGirl.

Prince was an early proponent of the Internet but later campaigned to crack down on unauthorized use of his songs.

Prince released his last album in 2010 on a CD distributed as an insert to several European newspapers.

In an interview at the time with one of the newspapers, Britain’s Daily Mirror, Prince declared the Internet to be “completely over” and said of digital gadgets: “They just fill your head with numbers and that can’t be good for you.”

NEW YORK — Netflix has picked up two seasons of a new sitcom from Tina Fey. Titled “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” it focuses on a woman who escapes from a doomsday cult and starts life over in New York. It was co-created

by Fey and Robert Carlock, who collaborated on “30 Rock.”

It stars Ellie Kemper of “The Office.”

Fey isn’t scheduled to appear in the series.

Netflix says the 13-episode first season will premiere in March.

The series had originally been bound for NBC, but that network passed. Universal Television, NBC’s corporate sibling, will remain the show’s producer.

‘Birdman’ leads Spirit Awards nominations Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — “Birdman,” a dark comedy about show business, took flight Tuesday with a leading six nominations for the 30th Film Independent Spirit Awards. Star Michael Keaton and director Alejandro González Iñárritu picked up nominations for the film from Fox Searchlight.

Nods also went to its supporting actors Emma Stone and Edward Norton and to cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki. Collecting five nominations each were the coming-of-age drama “Boyhood,” the Martin Luther King Jr. biopic “Selma,” and the noir thriller “Nightcrawler.”

Other films recognized in the best feature category included “Whiplash” and “Love is Strange,” both of which received four nominations.

Rosario Dawson and Diego Luna announced the nominees live from the W Hotel in Hollywood. The awards recognize achievements in independent film, and Oscar hopefuls are sprinkled throughout each category.

Nods in the male lead category went to David Oyelowo for his portrayal of Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma;” Jake Gyllenhall for his turn as a sociopathic freelance reporter in “Nightcrawler;” John Lithgow for “Love is Strange;” and André Benjamin for “Jimi: All Is

Film Independent also honored “Foxcatcher” with its Special Distinction Award and “Inherent Vice” with the Robert Altman Award. For unspecified reasons, neither film was eligible for individual nominations.

The Spirit Awards tries to recognize films outside the mainstream, but recent winners have tended to overlap with Academy Awards nominees.

Last year, the Spirit Awards winners matched the Academy Awards winners in several top categories, including best picture (“12 Years a Slave”), best actor (Matthew McConaughey for “Dallas Buyers Club”), and best actress (Cate Blanchett for “Blue Jasmine”).

Winners will be revealed at an awards ceremony on Feb. 21. 2015, a day before the Academy Awards. The Spirit Awards ceremony will air live from Santa Monica.

Agrotourism starts to draw travelers’ interest

AMLAPURA - Various ways have been taken by tourism players in Karangasem to attract travelers in order they make a visit to the lava land. One of them is by developing agrotourism as supporting objects for the visit to Besakih. By providing free admission, many travelers come and go to the tourist attraction.

Alam Giri agrotourism at Rendang, for instance, has conjured up a snakefruit moor into a tourist attraction. At the location, visitors are free to see a variety of plants cultivated. Besides, everyone can see how to process coffee traditionally.

“At the moment, civet coffee is very famous in the market. Therefore, we also demonstrate how to prepare

the coffee,” said Made Sugiri, the owner of the agrotourism.

Competition among the tourism stakeholders in Bali urges him to make more intensive efforts in order to be an interesting place to visit. One of them is by providing free admission into the land area of about 4 hectares. Not only that, his party also provides a free tester

of natural products owned by the agrotourism.

Made Sugiri revealed that his party had a wide range of products sold in the agrotourism. Revenue of the attraction was obtained from products sold to visitors. By that way, many visitors who wanted to drop in at Besakih chosen the agrotourism as their stopover. “Av-

eragely the most numerous visits are travelers from France, China, Japan and Korea,” he added.

The attractions established three years ago has considerable number of tourist visits. Highest number of visits occurred in July, August and September reaching 1,600 people a month. He did not deny that the number of tourist visits to his agrotourism destination relied on the number of visit to Besakih Temple.

In addition to agrotourism, many tourist accommodation businesses developed in Rendang like restaurant. Nevertheless, many cases of blackmail against visitors also

occurred at Besakih tourist attraction that made the tourism players apprehensive. He hoped that the number of cases tarnishing the tourism sector could be dealt with, so that it would not affect the number of tourist visits.

On the other hand, many other regions began to develop agrotourism objects like Tabanan and Karangasem. Moreover, not a few tourist attractions provide guide fee on behalf of visiting guests.

Averagely it ranges from 50 percent to 70 percent, so that it has an impact on the price of products sold. (dwa)
