KUTA - Customs officers at Bali’s Ngurah Rai airport have caught South African national Kedibone Sheilla Motsweneng (38) who attempted to smuggle 2.458 kilograms of methamphetamine to Bali.

The head of the airport’s Customs Service and Supervision, I Made Wijaya, said here on Wednesday the suspect was caught on Sunday (23/10) at around 1.30pm at Ngurah Rai airport.

The holder of passport number A01689641 was caught after disembarking from a Singapore Airlines plane on flight number SQ 942 serving the route of Johannesburg-Singapore-Denpasar (Bali).

“Customs officers suspected a man or a passenger that would pass the X-Ray checking point. Based on standards a check was done and another check was done more thoroughly by opening his bag,” he said.

It was when the black bag was opened did the customs officers find a package hidden in an inside room in the bag.

The lightweight, fuel-efficient 787 is the first mid-sized plane able to fly long-haul. But critics had said the project might never take off as its development ran years behind schedule and billions of dollars over budget.

Woman rescued three days after Turkey quake Reuters

ERCIS Turkey - Emergency workers rescued a 27-year-old woman alive from a collapsed building on Wednesday, three days after an earthquake killed more than 400 people in eastern Turkey, but hopes of finding more survivors faded and some teams were suspending searches.

Tens of thousands have been left homeless by the powerful 7.2 magnitude quake, which has now prompted the government to request foreign aid, including from Israel, to shelter distraught families amid growing complaints of a lack of tents and other relief supplies.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The Grasberg mine, which holds some of the world’s largest gold and copper reserves, has been the scene of several violent attacks in recent weeks. At least eight people have been killed, two by police firing shots to control a group of angry, striking workers.

Police detective Toni Sarjaka said a car carrying three police officers and two civilian guards was attacked Wednesday just after midnight, 3 miles (5 kilometers) from Freeport’s mining town of Kuala Kencana.

The unidentified gunmen fired several rounds, he said, but no one was injured.

The mine located in the remote mountains of Papua — home to a decades-long, low-level insurgency — has been repeatedly targeted with arson, roadside bombs and blockades since production began in the 1970s.

Though it generates more than

$2 billion in taxes, royalties and dividends for the government every year, locals say they’ve been left behind.

They point to their impoverished lifestyles and environmental damage caused by mine tailings pumped into nearly rivers.

Ninety percent of the mine’s 12,000 unionized workers, meanwhile, walked off their jobs on Sept. 15, demanding that current salaries of between $2.10 to $3.50 an hour be pushed to as high as $7.5 to $43.

Thursday, a minister said.

“Indonesia through the ministry of social affairs will hold an international conference on social welfare,” Social Affairs Minister Salim Segaf Al Jufrie said here on Tuesday.

He said that besides the ten ASEAN countries which would attend, the conference will

also be highlighted by the United States, Japan, Canada, Britain and Germany.

The minister said that the presence of friendly countries in the conference would reinforce the social solidarity spirit in the world.

“South Korea, Britain, Turkey, Kuwait

and Fiji said they will attend the event,” the ministers said.

Jufrie said that before the on social prosperity which was hold routinely every year did not include other countries.

The event will be opened by President Soesilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Heat oil in a saucepan. Add Spanish onion slices and garlic and fry gently until soft. Add beef and fry, stirring, until brown.

Add spices to beef and cook 2 minutes. Add coconut, brown sugar, lemon juice and beef stock; stir well.

Simmer gently, uncovered, 30-35 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until mixture is thickened and dry. Stir mixture more frequently towards end of cooking time to prevent sticking. Garnish with slivers of bell pepper, green chilies and small slices onion.

NOTE: If you prefer a more moist mixture, cook 20-25 minutes instead of 30-35 minutes.

Ikan Bali (Bali Fish) Ingredients 1 Fish, about 650-900g dressed Weight. Preferably sea bass or Mackerel 1 t Salt Oil, for deep frying 2 T Margarine or oil 2 sm Onions, sliced 1 t Sambal Oelek 1/2 t Laos 1/2 t Lemon grass 3 T Tamarind juice Pinch of ground ginger 1 t Brown sugar 1 T Sweet soy sauce Directions Cut ďŹ sh into serving portions and rub salt all over.

Feep-fry and drain on absorbent paper.

Heat oil and saute sliced onions until lightly brown.

Add sambal oelek, laos, lemon grass, tamarind juice, ginger, brown sugar and soy sauce. Heat thoroughly.

Place fried ďŹ sh in deep serving dish and pour sauce over it. Serve with rice.

LOS ANGELES — President Barack Obama is making the rounds in reliably Democratic California, joking with Jay Leno and tapping the coffers of wealthy, celebrity donors as he raises money for his re-election bid.

The president taped an appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” that was scheduled to air Tuesday night. It’s his second stop on the show as sitting president and fourth appearance overall.

From Los Angeles, Obama headed north to San Francisco for a fundraiser featuring a performance by folk rock singersongwriter Jack Johnson. Obama also had fundraisers scheduled in Denver, all part of a three-day, three-state swing through the west.

Tuesday’s fundraisers follow starstudded campaign events in Los Angeles on Monday. Obama joined actor

Will Smith and basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson at a dinner at the home of producer James Lassiter. Then he mingled with Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas over canapés at the movie star couple’s home just a few blocks away.

Obama was in California for money events last month. The state ranks as Obama’s top donor state, and he raised about $1 million in the Los Angeles area alone during the last two fundraising quarters, according to an Associated Press review of contributions above $200.

The western tour is one of Obama’s

busiest donor outreach trips of the season. Celebrities are tried and true fundraising draw, particularly for Democratic presidents. Both the president and the stars bask in their reflected fame and the endorsement of stars can be a useful asset.

Not that he needs the votes here.

California is a solidly Democratic state, though Sacramento-based Democratic consultant Roger Salazar said the president, echoing national trends, is less popular now in the state than he was when he was elected.

“Democrats by their nature are going to give the president the benefit of the doubt,” said Salazar, a veteran of California and national political campaigns. “But they want him to do something about it. They want to see some movement.”

LOS ANGELES — A sometimes tearful nurse testified Tuesday that her efforts to save Michael Jackson from the drug he craved for sleep were rebuffed by the star who insisted he needed the powerful anesthetic that eventually killed him.

Cherilyn Lee, a nurse practitioner who tried to shift Jackson to holistic sleep aids in the months before he died, said the singer told her Dipravan, a brand name for propofol, was the only thing that would knock him out and induce the sleep he needed.

He told Lee he had experienced the drug once during surgery. Lee almost didn’t testify. She sat down in the witness box then said she felt dizzy before starting to cry.

“This is just very sensitive for me,” she explained.

Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor had her taken to another room to rest, and she returned 20 minute later saying she felt better. She became tearful again while testifying that she had warned Jackson not to take the drug. The day was also marked by poignant testimony from the head of AEG, the concert giant that planned Jackson’s ill-fated “This Is It” shows in London.

Randy Phillips, the company president and chief executive officer who first proposed the concert to Jackson, said the star was excited and committed to restarting his career in London, where he could settle down with his children on a country estate “so they wouldn’t be living as vagabonds.”

“It was emotional,” said Phillips. “I cried.” “Did he cry?” asked defense attorney Ed Chernoff. “Yes,” Phillips said softly. Lee told of coming into Jackson’s life at the beginning of 2009 and leaving just before Dr. Conrad Murray arrived. Murray has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and is accused of giving Jackson a fatal dose of the drug Lee would not give him.

Lee recalled a meeting with the superstar at his rented mansion two months before his death. “He was sitting very close to me,” she said.

“He looked at me and said, ‘I have a lot of difficulty sleeping. I’ve tried a lot of things and I need something that will make me fall asleep right away. I need Dipravan.” Lee had never heard of the drug but did research and later told Jackson it was too dangerous to use in a home.

WASHINGTON — A baffling solar storm pulled colorful northern lights unusually far south, surprising space weather experts and treating skywatchers to a rare and spectacular treat.

A storm-chasing photographer captured the strange sky show in Arkansas Monday night. People in Kentucky and Georgia reported their sightings to local television stations.

A special automated NASA camera that takes a picture of the sky every minute in Huntsville, Ala., captured 20 minutes of the vibrant red and green aurora borealis.

In Arkansas, Brian Emfinger called the view “extremely vivid, the most vivid I have ever seen. There was just 15 to 20 minutes where it really went crazy.” Emfinger, a storm chaser, captured the vibrant nighttime images on camera in Ozark, Ark.

He called it “a much bigger deal” than a tornado” because he sees dozens of those every year. This is only the second northern lights in a decade that he has seen this far south. “They are very rare events,” said NASA scientist Bill Cooke, who found the aurora photos in the Alabama camera’s archive and posted them on the Marshall Space Flight Center’s blog. “We don’t see them this far south that often.”

Officials at the federal Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colo., said they were surprised at the southern reach. The center monitors solar storms, which trigger

auroras. Space weather forecast chief Bob Rutledge said given the size of the solar storm, the lights probably shouldn’t have been visible south of Iowa. The storm was only considered “moderate” sized, he said.

He called the storm unusual, its effects reaching Earth eight hours faster than forecast. But that timing made it just about perfect for U.S. viewing, he said. “The peak of the intensity happened when it was dark or becoming dark over the U.S., coupled with the clear skies. We did have significant aurora sightings,” Rutledge said.

“The timing was good on this.”

In Huntsville, the aurora lasted from 8:25 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. CDT, Cooke said. In Arkansas, Emfinger went out shortly after sunset after getting a space weather alert. He saw auroras that lasted until after 11 p.m.

LONDON — Popeye might want to consider switching to broccoli. British scientists recently unveiled a new breed of the vegetable that experts say packs a big nutritional punch. The new broccoli was specially grown to contain two to three times the normal amount of glucoraphanin, a nutrient believed to help ward off heart disease.

“Vegetables are a medicine cabinet already,” said Richard Mithen, who led the team of scientists at the Institute for Food Research in Norwich, England, that developed the new broccoli.

“When you eat this broccoli ... you get a reduction in cholesterol in your blood stream,” he told Associated Press Television.

Glucoraphanin works by breaking fat down in the body, preventing it from clogging the arteries.

It is only found in broccoli in significant amounts.

To create the vegetable, sold as “super broccoli,” Mithen and colleagues cross-bred a traditional

British broccoli with a wild, bitter Sicilian variety that has no flowery head, and a big dose of glucoraphanin. After 14 years, the enhanced hybrid was produced, which has been granted a patent

by European authorities. No genetic modification was used.

It’s been on sale as Beneforte in select stores in California and Texas for the last year, and hit British shelves this month. Later this fall, the broccoli will be rolled out across the U.S. The super vegetable is part of an increasing tendency among producers to inject extra nutrients into foods, ranging from calciumenriched orange juice to fortified sugary cereals and milk with added omega 3 fatty acids. In Britain, the new broccoli is sold as part of a line of vegetables that includes mushrooms with extra vitamin D, and tomatoes and potatoes with added selenium.

Not enough data exists to know if anyone could overdose on glucoraphanin, but vitamin D and selenium in very high quantities can be toxic.

The vaccine may offer protection against genital warts and cancers in males, as well as indirectly protect

women by reducing the transmission rate of HPV, ACIP said. The latest recommendations would change the advice for doctors from allowing them to give the vaccine to boys and men up to age 21 to encouraging that it be given as a matter of routine before they start having sex.

Anne Schuchat, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said the relatively low level of vaccination among girls was a key reason for the change. “HPV vaccine is not being highly taken up among teen girls,” she told reporters, calling the vaccination rate

“disappointing.”

The committee also agreed that in addition to reducing the burden on women and girls, the HPV vaccine showed great promise in warding off anal cancer and genital warts among boys and men. “Male vaccination is most effective when coverage of females is low,” she said.

HPV is linked to almost 13,000 cases of cervical cancer yearly in US women, 4,300 of which are fatal, and nearly 6,000 cases of anal cancer and 770 deaths in men. HPV is also suspected to be linked to a rise in head and neck cancers due to its transmission during oral sex.

Ferrari DLPV WR KLW WKH ground running in 2012

Ferrari’s chief designer Nikolas Tombazis says the Italian squad is aiming to hit the ground running in the 2012 season, but he admits the team is not taking anything for granted. “Our objective is to arrive in Australia absolutely competitive already,” Tombazis told Autosprint magazine.

“We don’t want to say ‘we are still behind, but we will do...’. “It’s clear however that out rivals are neither naive nor idiots. Our objective is to win, we aren’t sparing anything. But we don’t take anything for granted.”

The Maranello squad has been hurt by uncompetitive starts to the season in the past two years, and this season has been much less successful than expected, having taken just one win. Ferrari is planning a more aggressive approach for its car for next year, but Tombazis says the new

machine will not be another Red Bulllike car, despite the team’s dominance during the past two seasons.

“You can’t ignore your competitors: if Red Bull wins, you can’t say ‘I’ll just mind my own business’,” he added. “But it’s not just Red Bull having interesting solutions: there are also slower cars with solutions worthy of consideration.

You can’t hide behind excuses. I think, however, that next year’s car will have many different solutions, all ours.

“And it would not be fair to say it’s

a Red Bull, absolutely. It will be a Ferrrari, it will be different in various areas, with new solutions in other areas, maybe w taken from other cars. It will be a mix.”

Tombazis also said that Ferrari has understood why some of the developments introduced in the latter part of the season have not worked, even if it ran out of time to work on them.

“We have understood what didn’t work, but we haven’t been able to fix it completely because, in September, solving the problem would have needed more time with effects only on the final three races, taking away too much time from next year’s car. “This is why, from that point on, we’ve struggled to stay close to our rivals.”

GRESINI Racing will attend the season-ending Valencia Grand Prix after all, but has yet to decide whether it will compete in the event.

Team boss Fausto Gresini was quoted in the Italian press on Monday as saying that there was no chance of going to Valencia as the team continues to mourn the death of its rider Marco Simoncelli at the Malaysian Grand Prix last Sunday.

“The only certainty is that my team won’t participate in the upcoming Valencia Grand Prix and in the tests programmed after the race,” he told Corriere dello Sport.

However, he has now decided to bring his team to the Valencia event on November 4-6 and to display Simoncelli’s number 58 Honda in the garage all weekend.

The team has yet to make a decision, however, on whether Hiroshi Aoyama, or its Moto2 riders Michele Pirro and Yuki Takahashi, will take to the track.
