Screen legend Judi Dench honoured at Spain film festival
SAN SEBASTIAN - British screen legend Judi Dench was honoured Tuesday with a lifetime achievement award at Spain’s famous San Sebastian film festival. The 83-year-old actress, who won an Oscar in 1999 for her role as Queen Elizabeth I in “Shakespeare in Love”, received the festival’s Donostia Award, which goes to “a great film personality in recognition for their work and career”. During a short ceremony to collect the prize, Dench said she first visited San Sebastian with her parents when she was a teenager but “never thought for a second, that I would be an actress the rest of my life” and receive “such an incredible award” here. “I appreciate it very much indeed,” she added before her new film “Red Joan,” directed by Trevor Nunn, was screened. In the film, inspired on a true story, she plays a tranquil retiree who is suddenly arrested by MI5 and exposed as a long-standing KGB spy. Dench, a veteran star of the stage and screen, made her cinema debut in 1964 and has worked with directors
as varied as Stephen Frears, Kenneth Branagh, Clint Eastwood and Sam Mendes. Her subtle portrayal of complex characters such as Queen Victoria in “Mrs Brown” or author Iris Murdoch in “Iris” have earned her critical acclaim. A seven-time Oscar nominee and the recipient of several Bafta awards, Dench is perhaps best known worldwide for playing M, the head of MI6, in James Bond films. It was her first visit to the San Sebastian film festival, the oldest and most prestigious event of its kind in the Spanish speaking world. Dench joined US actor Danny de Vito and Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda, whose film “Shoplifters” won the Palme d’Or in this year’s Cannes Film Festival, who also picked up a Donostia Award this year. Past recipients include Gregory Peck, Robert De Niro, Bette Davis, Susan Sarandon and Meryl Streep. The 66th edition of the festival concludes on Saturday. US would lose out in trade war against the world: ECB
Economic activity in the United States could fall more than two percent within a year if Washington launched a trade war on a wide front, European Central Bank researchers suggested Wednesday. The forecast comes as officials like ECB President Mario Draghi and World Trade Organization chief Roberto Azevedo warn of protectionism’s rising threat to the world economy under Donald Trump’s “America First” policies. To test the US-against-all global trade war scenario, the Frankfurtbased experts fed a set of assumptions into economic models produced by the ECB and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). They simulated Washington hitting
all imports with 10-percent tariffs and America’s trade partners responding in kind -- a far more drastic scenario than Trump has so far toyed with. As well as the tariffs’ direct effects on trade, the economists tried to capture the effect on public and financial market confidence by simulating a jump in government borrowing costs and a slump in global stock markets -- as large as 16 percent for the US. Under that combined scenario, “real economic activity in the
United States could be more than two percent lower than the baseline in the first year alone,” they said. They further predict that after three years, GDP would still be one percent below its starting level.
- ‘Clearly worse off’ -
“An economy imposing a tariff which prompts retaliation by other countries is clearly worse off,” the economists concluded. “Its living standards fall and jobs are lost.” In trade, while US consumers and firms might gradually switch to buying American in response to more expensive imports, the effect is at first outweighed by the drop in exports as the country’s trade
partners buy less. Companies are also expected to invest less and hire fewer workers, amplifying the braking effect on the economy. Meanwhile, China is expected to win out in the early stages of the simulated trade war. With tariffs only affecting trade with the US, other countries could switch to buying Chinese rather than American exports, more than making up for reduced sales to the US. More broadly, the blow to confidence from a general trade war would produce “a significant and more wide-ranging impact on output across countries,” the economists found, shrinking the global economy 0.75 percent in the first
year. A near-3.0-percent contraction in overall trade would also weigh on world output. “The scenario of a global trade war will have a dramatic effect,” WTO boss Azevedo told German business leaders in Berlin Tuesday, warning that Washington was offering a “challenge to basic principles” of international exchange. Seven alternative airports prepared for IMF Annual Meeting
MANGUPURA - Before the implementation of the IMF-WB Annual Meeting, various preparations continue to be finalized. Cooperation between stakeholders has gone well. Moreover, the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been prepared.
Head of the Airport Authority for Region IV of BaliNusa Tenggara, Herson, stated that a number of simulations have been carried out related to the arrival and departure of the delegates. The flow has been simulated in order to be ready for welcoming a total of 17,000 delegates. For aircraft arrivals, the priority is given to the heads of state and the prime ministers. Moreover, the parking space of their aircraft will be prepared in Bali. However, if indeed the aircraft parking space cannot accommodate all, the other aircrafts will be transferred to the nearest airports. He said that a total of seven alternative airports will be prepared such as the Lombok Airport, Halim Perdana Kusuma, Juanda Surabaya, Makassar, Banyuwangi, Solo and Balikpapan. “We’ve already called them for a meeting. In principle, all the airport heads are ready to accommodate the overflowing aircrafts from Bali,” he said when asked for his confirmation on Tuesday (Sep. 25). According to him, the arrangement of flight slots has been made. Although the process of handling delegates in Bali is a priority to deal with, it is expected not to interfere with regular daily operations. “On the day of event, the handling of the IMF delegates is expected to run well without disrupting the day-to-day operations at the airport. In other words, the regular services remain to be facilitated,” he concluded. Regarding the disaster management, there is indeed a special SOP for mitigation. Everything about this has been prepared, both with tourism players and other stakeholders including the local government. “Everything is ready. For disaster mitigation, it is not only for Mount Agung, but also for other disasters. Hopefully, it can run normally,” he hoped. For the delegates’ luggage, his division has also communicated with customs and excise office. He admitted that so far, there is no information related to the delegates carrying special items. However, if there are indeed those carrying special items, special vehicles or the matters related to national security, they will be handled by the Air Force. “If there is luggage related to state security, it will

be handled by the Air Force,” he explained. Meanwhile, the immigration arrangements like the handling of delegates checking in through the domestic terminal have also been discussed. Later on, in the domestic terminal will also be prepared separate table for handling immigration services. “We do not want the implementation of the IMF will have a problem. In case there are a few, we will cover it with careful planning,” he said. When confirmed separately, the Head of Ngurah Rai Airport Immigration Office, Amran Aris, said that related to the immigration affairs, it indeed has been regularly done so far. The handling the immigration affairs related to the upcoming IMF event, his office will be assisted by the National Committee and the system has been coordinated. At present, the immigration has prepared a special counter for delegates that will use regular aircraft. Among them, six units are installed at the international arrival terminal and 10 units at departure terminal. “Previously, it has been tested. Since they are new device, they must be ascertained first to avoid of having a problem,” he said. In the meantime, GM of Airnav, Rosedi, stated that currently the aircraft flight slot of Ngurah Rai Airport can accommodate a total of 30 aircrafts per hour. However, related to the IMF activities, the arrangements will be made so they can accommodate the aircraft boarded by the IMF delegates. However, his division has not been able to estimate how many aircrafts will come. It remains to wait for further information from the Ministry of Finance and from Bank Indonesia. “Nevertheless, we have prepared several scenarios,” he concluded. In welcoming the IMF, Airnav also added 10 Air Traffic Controller (ATC) officers to the tower and on its radar. The additions have been made since August 15 because there must be a training process and so forth. Meanwhile, there is no addition to the ATC equipment because the existing ones have complied with international standards. The addition is only made in terms of supporting facilities such as generator set, battery and radio to avoid any disruption during the next operations. (kmb23)

Badung tourism villages tend to duplicate
Regent asks Tourism Office to focus on arranging them
MANGUPURA - Tourism villages in Badung districts grow flourishingly. Moreover, almost all sub-districts develop communitybased tourism. However, this economic equality endeavor does not have its own characteristics, and tends to duplicate other tourism villages having developed. For instance, they offer ATVs, outbound packages, and the development of spiritual tourism. Diversification of the objects and tourist attractions is very much needed to create diversity to prevent visiting tourists from easily getting bored. Seeing such condition, Regent of Badung, I Nyoman Giri Prasta, asked the Badung Tourism Office to focus on managing tourism village, so that it can become a tourist attraction. “I assign the office to focus on the five tourism villages that we will build. This is for the sake of Badung people so they can become the host at their respective home village. We will help them (tourism villages) with one management, so this is the task for tourism office head,” said Regent Giri Prasta on Tuesday (Sep. 25). This politician from Pelaga village, Petang, also asked the head of the tourism office to focus on developing tourism villages by not participating in the promotions overseas. “Later on, the Head of the Tourism Office will no longer participate in tourism promotion overseas. This village tourism program must be accelerated,” he said. The Head of the Badung Tourism Office, I Made Badra, said that in reality there is no prohibition on going abroad, but the regent of Badung requested to focus on managing tourism villages, attractions and others in Badung. “Later on, the promotion activities overseas will be organized by the industry in cooperation with the Regional Tourism Promotion Board (BPPD) of Badung. So, I will focus on arranging tourism villages,” he explained. Meanwhile, regarding the arrangement of the tourism villages in Badung, he plans to arrange 11 tourism villages. However, for this year and next year the focus is on arranging five tourism villages namely the Pangsan, Carangsari, Bongkasa Pertiwi, Baha and Sangeh. According to him, this is an integrated program of all sectors to realize how infrastructure,
comfort, security and attractions can be well packed. Moreover, it has made coordination with the Association of Indonesia Tour and Travel Agencies (ASITA) and the Indonesia Tour Guide Association (HPI). “Of the five tourism villages, they may not be the same. So, they must have their own advantages and characteristics. For this year and next year, we will focus on the five tourism villages and be financed until they really well develop,” he said. This bureaucrat from Kuta admitted that many tourism villages in Badung are not developing, even stagnant in the middle of their journey. On that account, until next year, it will focus on all the tourism villages that have been developed and they must be able to run. “In the past, if focused on management, the readiness of the operator was lacking. Now, we need to rebuild. Participation of the community and the government must go hand in hand,” he affirmed. Previously, the Division Head of the Tourism Industry, Ngakan Putu Tri Iriawan, said the tourism village must have different potential and uniqueness such as outbound potential including flying fox, trekking, and other unique tourism facilities. Meanwhile, other villages can develop agrotourism such as coffee, cloves, or horticultural products. This is also done because there is impression that tourism villages chime in to develop similar products. For instance, one village develops a certain potential, another village goes along. Determination of the tourism villages must be based on their respective potential and peculiarities. “If it can be realized and each tourism village develops different potential, they will not mutually strike down. Tourists even do not feel complete if they don’t visit all the tourism villages. This is clear because each tourism village has different objects and attractions,” he explained. In addition to potential, tourism villages must be equipped with world class supporting facilities, one of which is toilet. This facility is so important, so that it must be available at every tourism village. The provision of homestays as the accommodation for tourists is also needed. (kmb27)

FDA warns about flea pills for dogs and cats
PILLS or chews that protect dogs and cats against fleas can cause neurological problems such as stumbling or seizures, and pet owners need more warning, the Food and Drug Administration said Thursday.
The FDA issued an alert to owners and veterinarians and said it was requiring clearer labels on the products. The flea pills and chews all contain a pesticide called isoxazoline, the FDA said. They include products sold under the brand names Bravecto, Nexgard and Simparica. “Another product in this class, Credelio, recently received FDA approval. These products are approved for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations, and the treatment and control of tick infestations,” the FDA said in a statement. “Isoxazoline products have been associated with neurologic adverse reactions, including muscle tremors, ataxia and seizures in some dogs and cats,” the FDA added. Ataxia is a lack of muscle control and can cause animals to stumble or twitch. “Although most dogs and cats haven’t had neurologic adverse reactions, seizures may occur in animals without a prior history,” the FDA added. The labels on the products, sold mostly as flavored chews, already mention the risk of neurological side
effects, and the risks have been reported by consumer groups. It is just important for vets and owners to get more information, the FDA said. “The FDA carefully reviewed studies and other data on Bravecto, Credelio, Nexgard and Simparica prior to approval, and these products continue to be safe and effective for the majority of animals,” the agency said. “The agency is asking the manufacturers to make the changes to the product labeling in order to provide veterinarians and pet owners with the information they need to make treatment decisions for each pet on an individual basis.” There are good reasons to use flea products. Fleas and ticks carry a range of diseases, including plague and Lyme disease, which can affect animals and their owners. Pets can develop allergies or sensitivities to the bites, and lose large patches of fur as a result. They can also become susceptible to worms and other parasites if they suffer allergic reactions to flea bites. The FDA said hundreds of pesticides are on the market to protect against fleas and ticks. They include “spot-on” products applied to an animal’s skin, flea sprays, powders and collars. Many can cause nausea, vomiting and neurological side effects. It is important to make sure that the right product is used, the FDA said. (net)

Syphilis cases double in babies, CDC finds
THE number of babies born with syphilis has doubled since 2013 and is at a 20-year high, federal health officials said Tuesday. More than 900 U.S. babies were born infected with syphilis in 2017, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. It’s easy to cure a syphilis infection with antibiotics, but the sexually transmitted infection often does not cause immediate symptoms and people may not know they have it. It can kill babies, however. The CDC says 40 percent of babies infected with syphilis are stillborn or die soon after they are born. Others are born prematurely. Those who survive can develop deformed bones, severe anemia, meningitis, blindness and deafness. “No parent should have to bear the death of a child when it would have been prevented with a simple test and safe treatment,” the CDC’s Dr. Jonathan Mermin said in a statement. There’s an epidemic of sexually transmitted diseases across the U.S., with rates hitting record highs. Syphilis cases, in particular, nearly doubled in 2017, the CDC says. A pregnant woman with syphilis has up to an 80 percent chance of passing it on to her baby, the CDC said. “To protect every baby, we have to start by protecting every mother,” said Dr. Gail Bolan, director of CDC’s Division of STD Prevention. “Early testing and prompt treatment to cure any infections are critical first steps, but too many women are falling through the cracks of the system,” Bolan said. “If we’re going to reverse the resurgence of congenital syphilis, that has to change.” Women in the U.S. often do not have access to health care, a special risk when they are pregnant. Close to 9 percent of the population lacks
any health insurance coverage, according to the latest Census Bureau figures. Medicaid, the state-federal health insurance plan for people with low incomes, is supposed to cover pregnant women. So are policies provided by the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare. A CDC team found that in 2016, 15 percent of U.S. women received inadequate prenatal care. Only 77 percent of U.S. women got prenatal care in the first trimester. Other CDC research shows that 1 in 3 women who gave birth to a baby with syphilis in 2016 had been tested at least once for syphilis while pregnant, but either became infected after the test or did not get treated in time to protect the baby. “Women at high risk for syphilis or who live in high-prevalence areas should be tested not only at the first prenatal visit, but again early in the third trimester and at delivery,” the CDC said. According to the new data, Louisiana had the highest rate of births affected by syphilis: 93 cases for every 100,000 births, the CDC team found. Mississippi had the lowest rate, with 2.6 cases per 100,000 births. Cuts in funding to public health programs are to blame, at least in part, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials said. “With cuts to public health budgets, it’s no surprise we’re seeing a rise in rates,” Michael Fraser, CEO of the association, said in a statement. “What we’re hearing from states is that the unfortunate increases in congenital syphilis cases has a lot to do with decreases in funding for the core work for STD prevention. These statistics remind us that we need to sustain funding for public health — we know what we need to do, we just need to have the resources to do it.” (net)

Chairperson of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) of Nusa Penida, Nyoman Suarta, stated that Nyepi Segara is habitually held once a year, exactly a day after the implementation of Ngusabha Agung Panyejeg Jagat ritual. “The Ngusabha ritual is done in turns at two temples namely the Penataran Agung Ped and Batu Medawu Temple,” he said. The ceremony was followed by Nusa Gede, Nusa Lembongan and Jungutbatu residents. It is meant to create equanimity when invoking for tirtha amerta or holy water at sea or ocean. PT BCA Tbk. officer, Agus Sumiko, said that millennials have different ravel habits than generation x and y preferring to take part in particular kinds of activities when they travel rather than just exploring a place. SO, millenials have been particularly interested in attending travel fairs. “Transactions at travel fairs have been increasing”, said Sumiko on Monday (Sep. 24). Another shift that has occurred,
explained Sumiko is that many of these transactions are done in cash rather than using credit card. “Credit card transactions have decreased”, he said. Credit card transactions have decreased by about 10-1 percent. In previous years about 7-80 percent of transactions at the Garuda travel fair were done using credit or debit cards. “SO this is valuable information for BCA”, he said. Sales Manager of Garuda Indonesia’s Bali Branch, Muhamad Ardi Kurniadi, said the travel fair encourages the sale of Garuda products and services contributing some 10-1 percent of Garuda’s total sales.
The travel fair held by Garuda in March 2018 generated some IDR 31 billion in sales and they aim to generate IDR 30 billion in the second phase of the fair. “Sales tend to be higher in the first phase than in the second”, said Kurniadi. Apart from offering flights and tour packages to the 10 top priority destinations (the ten ‘new Balis), Garuda also promotes all 177 of their other destinations. The delegates of some 200 people are scheduled to visit two tourist destinations in Bangli on October 10-11 Merta said that apart from Penglipuran village and Lake View, his division had actually offered a number of other developing tourist objects in Bangli to the committee. Some of them are Twin Hill at Guliang Kawan, Guliang Kangin tourism village in Bangli subdistrict, Bali House and Mahapraja in Tembuku subdistrict. “But for the reasons of limited time, the committee only chose two tourist objects. The entourage is schedule to visit Bangli not for a whole day,” he said. In addition to visiting several developing tourism objects, Merta also briefly expressed his hopes to the committee so that delegates can stay at hotels and homestay in Bangli for several nights. BUENOS AIRES - Argentina was paralyzed by a general strike on Tuesday while the central bank chief resigned amid talks with the International Monetary Fund on a revised crisis loan package. As president Mauricio Macri negotiated accelerated funding from a $50 billion loan agreed with the IMF in June, the country’s beleaguered currency was hit by the news that Luis Caputo had been replaced by Guido Sandleris as central bank chief. The peso almost immediately slumped 2.2 percent against the dollar. The IMF seemed to approve of the change, spokesman Gerry Rice expressing the desire to continue its “close and constructive relationship” with Argentina’s central bank. Later, IMF chief Christine Lagarde said a deal with Argentina was “close to the finish line” after a “very good meeting” with Macri on the sidelines of the UN General
Assembly in New York. His center-right government burned through an initial $15 billion tranche of the loan in June to prop up the beleaguered peso, with a further $3 billion due in November and the rest over the next three years. Argentines protested the loss of purchasing power brought on by the peso losing around 50 percent of its value against the dollar this year. Many shops, banks and public offices were closed with public transport and taxis at a standstill. Following Monday’s mass demonstration organized by trade unions, left-wing demonstrators faced off against security forces near a key Buenos Aires bridge on Tuesday, but streets in the capital were mostly deserted with many people unable to get to work. Rosmah’s love of costly overseas shopping trips, designer handbags and jewellery made her a lightning rod for public anger, and fuelled suspicions that she benefitted from the plundering of 1MDB. After the election loss, a stash of cash, jewellery and hundreds of designer handbags worth as much as $273 million was seized from properties linked to Najib in raids around Kuala Lumpur. Rosmah is often compared to Imelda Marcos, who left behind more than a thousand pairs of shoes after her husband, Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos, was ousted in 1986. Najib’s fall from grace has been swift since he was ousted from power by a reformist alliance led Mahathir Mohamad, 93, who is in his second stint as premier. The ex-leader has been arrested and hit with 32 charges linked to the 1MDB scandal, including allegations that hundreds of millions of dollars ended up in his personal bank account. The Manila, Philippines-based regional lender said Wednesday that it expects economic growth in Asia to remain at a robust 6.0 percent in 2018 but to slip to 5.8 percent next year. China’s economy is expected to expand at a 6.6 percent annual pace this year but slow to 6.3 percent in 2019. It cited looming financial and trade shocks as the biggest sources of potential trouble. If the U.S. economy shows signs of overheating, interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve, including one expected Wednesday to take the benchmark rate to 2-2.25 percent, could disrupt currency markets and other capital flows, leading to problems with bad loans. Overly high housing prices also are risks for China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and South Korea, the report said. But it said the bigger threat comes from potential damage to supply chains caused by trade conflicts, especially between the U.S. and China. President Donald Trump pushed ahead Monday with higher tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imports. Beijing retaliated by imposing penalties on $60 billion of U.S. goods. The conflict stemming from U.S. complaints Beijing steals or pressures foreign companies to hand over technology, has the potential to shave 0.5 percentage points off of China’s growth and 0.1 percentage points off of growth in the U.S., the report said. China and the United States earlier imposed 25 percent tariffs on $50 billion of each other’s goods. Combined, the tariffs now cover nearly half the goods and services China sells America and nearly 60 percent of what the United States sells China. The damage will be worse if Trump carries out threats to raise tariffs on virtually all products imported from China, said the ADB’s chief economist, Yasuyuki Sawada. But fast-growing Asia is quickly becoming such a large market that expanding trade within the region can help offset lost exports to the U.S., he said. “Intraregional trade in Asia is as high as almost 50 percent
of total t rade and this seems to be increasing over time,” he told The Associated Press in a phone interview. “Asia used to be a global factory and everyone viewed Asian economies as suppliers, but if we look, more than half of the global middle class is living in Asia.” Also, even if Trump’s tariffs strategy succeeds in reducing the U.S. trade deficit with China, the ADB report said, the deficit with Asia overall is unlikely to decline so much because other countries would likely be exporting more to make up the difference. Preparation: first of all, turmeric, galangal, ginger and aromatic ginger are finely chopped. Onion and garlic are sliced ??and then mixed with other ingredients, and then ground to make it smooth. Similarly, candlenut, pepper and coriander can be crushed or blender to be smoothed, too. After that, put into the basin and then cook the rice waste and add coconut oil. Stir it well so the seasoning can mix thoroughly with the rice. The next process is to put the mixed rice into the pan. Add water and salt to taste. Put spinach or sweet leaves and two pieces of bay leaves. Heat it for about 20 minutes or until cooked. Finally, take out the porridge and now it is ready to be served. The uncharacteristic quiet is the product of rising tensions in the small sea, the waters of which Russia and Ukraine agreed to share more than a decade ago, but is now the latest theatre in the bitter conflict between the two nations. Russia’s annexation of the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 means ships must now pass through a narrow strait bordered by Russian-controlled territory on both sides, while Kremlin-backed rebel regions of eastern Ukraine are uncomfortably close to Mariupol. In a growing crisis, Kiev and the West accuse Russia of deliberately blocking ships from entering the sea. “The whole time I’ve worked here, I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Sergiy Kostyrko, a tanned foreman who has worked at the Mariupol docks for 23 years. “Ships have become very rare visitors to our port.” Ukraine criticises what it sees as a deliberate move by Moscow to block the Kerch Strait, the only shipping route into the Azov Sea, where Ukraine’s commercial ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk are crucial gateways for its metallurgy industry exports.

The police said they have detained 16 people in connection with the killing. “We decided that we are halting the Liga 1 competition for an indefinite period of time,” Gatot Widagdo, media director for the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI), told AFP. “We’re focused on solving this problem.” Widagdo said the break in competition would allow an investigation into the fatal beating and a review of security procedures among the 18 clubs in the top flight, fans and the league operator, PT Liga Indonesia Baru. Indonesian football has been beset by problems in recent years, including poor management, corruption allegations and foreign players dying after going unpaid and being unable to afford medical care. INNSBRUCK - Olympic champion Annemiek van Vleuten defended her world championship time-trial title on Tuesday as compatriots Anna van der Breggen and Ellen van Dijk completed an-all Dutch podium. Van Vleuten completed the 27.7km course in 34mins 25sec, with Van der Breggen second at 28secs and Van Dijk third at 1min 25sec. The Dutchwoman shot to fame at the Rio Games when she won gold in the road race despite falling several times. She later admitted she had covered the whole course at least ten times and then watched her own video of the course at nights on her phone. “We came in May and covered it four or five times on ‘recon’, then I covered the entire course every day since we got here with the team,” said Van Vleuten. “I know every single corner.” She added: “I usually make up time on the climbs and I put the pedal down on the climb, I went out fast and I know I had an amazing second part but then I just died at the end, I had no energy left. “So I was exhausted and unsure If I’d won so I was surprised it was 28 seconds,” she said.

Van Vleuten also revealed she had been wearing ‘lucky’ earrings her recently-deceased father had given her before the Rio Games. “After what happened in Rio I wasn’t sure they were lucky, and said so to my mum but she was like ‘no, no, they’re lucky’,” she said. “But I wore them last year in Bergen (where she won the 2017 world time trial), which was a a new chapter and now I wore them again today so I think now we can say they are lucky.” Looking ahead to Saturday’s road race, Van Vleuten said there was plenty of time to rest up. “I won’t be going dancing tonight,” she joked. “So don’t worry, I’m in really good shape.” Van der Breggen also finished second last year in Bergen and said: “It’s nice we made history with the 1-2-3, which is great for Dutch fans, I just wish it had been in a different order.” Bronze medallist Van Dijk, 31, said: “Unfortunately this was not the team time trial, it was the individual one.” All three will now line up for Saturday’s women’s road race over the same pristine Tyrol roads with their dramatic Alpine backdrop. Atletico Madrid are finally finding their groove in La Liga and just in time for a city derby against Real Madrid after they strolled to a 3-0 win over newly-promoted Huesca on Tuesday. Pep Guardiola has backed Manchester City starlet Phil Foden to shine for the next decade after the youngster’s dazzling League Cup display against Oxford. Foden was City’s man of the match and capped his influential performance with his first senior goal in their 3-0 third round win on Tuesday. INNSBRUCK - Olympic champion Annemiek van Vleuten defended her world championship time-trial title on Tuesday as compatriots Anna van der Breggen and Ellen van Dijk completed an-all Dutch podium. Van Vleuten completed the 27.7km course in 34mins 25sec, with Van der Breggen second at 28secs and Van Dijk third at 1min 25sec. The Dutchwoman shot to fame at the Rio Games when she won gold in the road race despite falling several times. She later admitted she had covered the whole course at least ten times and then watched her own video of the course at nights on her phone. “We came in May and covered it four or five times on ‘recon’, then I covered the entire course every day since we got here with the team,” said Van Vleuten. “I know every single corner.” She added: “I usually make up time on the climbs and I put the pedal down on the climb, I went out fast and I know I had an amazing second part but then I just died at the end, I had no energy left. “So I was exhausted and unsure If I’d won so I was surprised it was 28 seconds,” she said.

It was a disappointing end to a spirited display from Zhang, a 21-year-old from Shanghai who is ranked 340th but who raised hopes of an upset for local fans in the second set. Russia’s ‘blockade’ of Sea of Azov ports angers Ukraine MARIUPOL - Seagulls whirl over the docks of Ukraine’s port of Mariupol on the Sea of Azov as huge cranes once used to unload ships’ cargoes stand idle. The uncharacteristic quiet is the product of rising tensions in the small sea, the waters of which Russia and Ukraine agreed to share more than a decade ago, but is now the latest theatre in the bitter conflict between the two nations. Russia’s annexation of the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 means ships must now pass through a narrow strait bordered by Russian-controlled territory on both sides, while Kremlin-backed rebel regions of eastern Ukraine are uncomfortably close to Mariupol. In a growing crisis, Kiev and the West accuse Russia of deliberately blocking ships from entering the sea. “The whole time I’ve worked here, I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Sergiy Kostyrko, a tanned foreman who has worked at the Mariupol docks for 23 years. “Ships have become very rare visitors to our port.” Ukraine criticises what it sees as a deliberate move by Moscow to block the Kerch Strait, the only shipping route into the Azov Sea, where Ukraine’s commercial ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk are crucial gateways for its metallurgy industry exports.

Kiev has warned that Russia could even launch an attack on Mariupol. Russia is trying to block Ukraine’s ports on the Sea of Azov acting “to escalate tensions and, it cannot be ruled out, to carry out a military operation (including) attacks on Mariupol”, Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko declared in July. In a sign of the conflict’s growing scale, the United States has condemned Russia for impeding maritime transit as part of a campaign “to undermine and destabilise Ukraine”. “We call on Russia to cease its harassment of international shipping in the Sea of Azov,” the US Department of State said in a statement late August. The European Union’s delegation to Ukraine said earlier this month that Russia “has increasingly and deliberately hindered and delayed the passage of vessels, including vessels from EU member states”. Foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova insisted this week that “Russia’s actions in checking ships are aimed solely at security.” “It is precisely Kiev’s actions, those of its uncontrollable radicals, that force Russia to strengthen security measures,” she said. Indonesian football league suspended after deadly fan beating Indonesia has suspended play in its top professional football league after supporters of a rival team clubbed a fan to death with iron bars and planks, a football association spokesman said Wednesday, plunging the crisis-prone league into another scandal. The decision follows the weekend death of Haringga Sirla, a 23-year-old Persija Jakarta fan, who was beaten by a group of Persib Bandung supporters outside a stadium in the city of Bandung, 150 kilometres (93 miles) southeast of Jakarta. Sunday’s incident was the latest in a spate of football-related deaths in Southeast Asia’s biggest nation. The police said they have detained 16 people in connection with the killing. “We decided that we are halting the Liga 1 competition for an indefinite period of time,” Gatot Widagdo, media director for the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI), told AFP. “We’re focused on solving this problem.” Widagdo said the break in competition would allow an investigation into the fatal beating and a review of security procedures among the 18 clubs in the top flight, fans and the league operator, PT Liga Indonesia Baru. The PSSI said it would also consult with FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation, partly as a way of avoiding sanctions, Widagdo added.
Indonesian football has been beset by problems in recent years, including poor management, corruption allegations and foreign players dying after going unpaid and being unable to afford medical care. An explosive row between the domestic association and government prompted FIFA to ban Indonesia from international competition in 2015. The ban was lifted last year. In July, Indonesian fans hurled stones and bottles at the visiting Malaysia team after the home side lost their semi-final match in the AFF Cup Under-19 football match. The football tournament at last month’s Asian Games passed off without incident and Indonesia said it will bid to host the 2032 Olympic Games. But Sirla was the 70th Indonesian football fan to die in match-related violence since 1994, including a string of deadly clashes between the Jakarta and Bandungbased clubs in recent years, according to figures supplied by local football watchdog Save Our Soccer. Football analyst Akmal Marhali urged the association to punish clubs whose supporters were violent. “PSSI has promised it would take a firm action (in the past), but nothing happened,” Marhali said. “This has encouraged football supporters.” Results of the investigation would be handed to the PSSI disciplinary committee in three to five days, with sanctions possible, Widagdo said. The Manila, Philippines-based regional lender said Wednesday that it expects economic growth in Asia to remain at a robust 6.0 percent in 2018 but to slip to 5.8 percent next year. China’s economy is expected to expand at a 6.6 percent annual pace this year but slow to 6.3 percent in 2019. It cited looming financial and trade shocks as the biggest sources of potential trouble. If the U.S. economy shows signs of overheating, interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve, including one expected Wednesday to take the benchmark rate to 2-2.25 percent, could disrupt currency markets and other capital flows, leading to problems with bad loans. Overly high housing prices also are risks for China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and South Korea, the report said. But it said the bigger threat comes from potential damage to supply chains caused by trade conflicts, especially between the U.S. and China. President Donald Trump pushed ahead Monday with higher tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imports. Beijing retaliated by imposing penalties on $60 billion of U.S. goods. The conflict stemming from U.S. complaints Beijing steals or pressures foreign companies to hand over technology, has the potential to shave 0.5 percentage points off of China’s growth and 0.1 percentage points off of growth in the U.S., the report said. China and the United States earlier imposed 25 percent tariffs on $50 billion of each other’s goods. Combined, the tariffs now cover nearly half the goods and services China sells America and nearly 60 percent of what the United States sells China. The damage will be worse if Trump carries out threats to raise tariffs on virtually all products imported from China, said the ADB’s chief economist, Yasuyuki Sawada. But fast-growing Asia is quickly becoming such a large market that expanding trade within the region can help offset lost exports to the U.S., he said. “Intraregional trade in Asia is as high as almost 50 percent

Some of them are Twin Hill at Guliang Kawan, Guliang Kangin tourism village in Bangli subdistrict, Bali House and Mahapraja in Tembuku subdistrict. “But for the reasons of limited time, the committee only chose two tourist objects. BUENOS AIRES - Argentina was paralyzed by a general strike on Tuesday while the central bank chief resigned amid talks with the International Monetary Fund on a revised crisis loan package. As president Mauricio Macri negotiated accelerated funding from a $50 billion loan agreed with the IMF in June, the country’s beleaguered currency was hit by the news that Luis Caputo had been replaced by Guido Sandleris as central bank chief. The peso almost immediately slumped 2.2 percent against the dollar. The IMF seemed to approve of the change, spokesman Gerry Rice expressing the desire to continue its “close and constructive relationship” with Argentina’s central bank. Later, IMF chief Christine Lagarde said a deal with Argentina was “close to the finish line” after a “very good meeting” with Macri on the sidelines of the UN General
Assembly in New York. His center-right government burned through an initial $15 billion tranche of the loan in June to prop up the beleaguered peso, with a further $3 billion due in November and the rest over the next three years. Argentines protested the loss of purchasing power brought on by the peso losing around 50 percent of its value against the dollar this year. Many shops, banks and public offices were closed with public transport and taxis at a standstill. Following Monday’s mass demonstration organized by trade unions, left-wing demonstrators faced off against security forces near a key Buenos Aires bridge on Tuesday, but streets in the capital were mostly deserted with many people unable to get to work. FDA warns about flea pills for dogs and cats
PILLS or chews that protect dogs and cats against fleas can cause neurological problems such as stumbling or seizures, and pet owners need more warning, the Food and Drug Administration said Thursday.
The FDA issued an alert to owners and veterinarians and said it was requiring clearer labels on the products. The flea pills and chews all contain a pesticide called isoxazoline, the FDA said. They include products sold under the brand names Bravecto, Nexgard and Simparica. “Another product in this class, Credelio, recently received FDA approval. These products are approved for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations, and the treatment and control of tick infestations,” the FDA said in a statement. “Isoxazoline products have been associated with neurologic adverse reactions, including muscle tremors, ataxia and seizures in some dogs and cats,” the FDA added. Ataxia is a lack of muscle control and can cause animals to stumble or twitch. “Although most dogs and cats haven’t had neurologic adverse reactions, seizures may occur in animals without a prior history,” the FDA added. The labels on the products, sold mostly as flavored chews, already mention the risk of neurological side
effects, and the risks have been reported by consumer groups. It is just important for vets and owners to get more information, the FDA said. “The FDA carefully reviewed studies and other data on Bravecto, Credelio, Nexgard and Simparica prior to approval, and these products continue to be safe and effective for the majority of animals,” the agency said. “The agency is asking the manufacturers to make the changes to the product labeling in order to provide veterinarians and pet owners with the information they need to make treatment decisions for each pet on an individual basis.” There are good reasons to use flea products. Fleas and ticks carry a range of diseases, including plague and Lyme disease, which can affect animals and their owners. Pets can develop allergies or sensitivities to the bites, and lose large patches of fur as a result. They can also become susceptible to worms and other parasites if they suffer allergic reactions to flea bites. The FDA said hundreds of pesticides are on the market to protect against fleas and ticks. They include “spot-on” products applied to an animal’s skin, flea sprays, powders and collars. Many can cause nausea, vomiting and neurological side effects. It is important to make sure that the right product is used, the FDA said. (net)

Syphilis cases double in babies, CDC finds
THE number of babies born with syphilis has doubled since 2013 and is at a 20-year high, federal health officials said Tuesday. More than 900 U.S. babies were born infected with syphilis in 2017, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. It’s easy to cure a syphilis infection with antibiotics, but the sexually transmitted infection often does not cause immediate symptoms and people may not know they have it. It can kill babies, however. The CDC says 40 percent of babies infected with syphilis are stillborn or die soon after they are born. Others are born prematurely. Those who survive can develop deformed bones, severe anemia, meningitis, blindness and deafness. “No parent should have to bear the death of a child when it would have been prevented with a simple test and safe treatment,” the CDC’s Dr. Jonathan Mermin said in a statement. There’s an epidemic of sexually transmitted diseases across the U.S., with rates hitting record highs. Syphilis cases, in particular, nearly doubled in 2017, the CDC says. A pregnant woman with syphilis has up to an 80 percent chance of passing it on to her baby, the CDC said. “To protect every baby, we have to start by protecting every mother,” said Dr. Gail Bolan, director of CDC’s Division of STD Prevention. “Early testing and prompt treatment to cure any infections are critical first steps, but too many women are falling through the cracks of the system,” Bolan said. “If we’re going to reverse the resurgence of congenital syphilis, that has to change.” Women in the U.S. often do not have access to health care, a special risk when they are pregnant. Close to 9 percent of the population lacks
any health insurance coverage, according to the latest Census Bureau figures. Medicaid, the state-federal health insurance plan for people with low incomes, is supposed to cover pregnant women. So are policies provided by the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare. A CDC team found that in 2016, 15 percent of U.S. women received inadequate prenatal care. Only 77 percent of U.S. women got prenatal care in the first trimester. Other CDC research shows that 1 in 3 women who gave birth to a baby with syphilis in 2016 had been tested at least once for syphilis while pregnant, but either became infected after the test or did not get treated in time to protect the baby. “Women at high risk for syphilis or who live in high-prevalence areas should be tested not only at the first prenatal visit, but again early in the third trimester and at delivery,” the CDC said. According to the new data, Louisiana had the highest rate of births affected by syphilis: 93 cases for every 100,000 births, the CDC team found. Mississippi had the lowest rate, with 2.6 cases per 100,000 births. Cuts in funding to public health programs are to blame, at least in part, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials said. “With cuts to public health budgets, it’s no surprise we’re seeing a rise in rates,” Michael Fraser, CEO of the association, said in a statement. “What we’re hearing from states is that the unfortunate increases in congenital syphilis cases has a lot to do with decreases in funding for the core work for STD prevention. These statistics remind us that we need to sustain funding for public health — we know what we need to do, we just need to have the resources to do it.” (net)

Chairperson of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) of Nusa Penida, Nyoman Suarta, stated that Nyepi Segara is habitually held once a year, exactly a day after the implementation of Ngusabha Agung Panyejeg Jagat ritual. “The Ngusabha ritual is done in turns at two temples namely the Penataran Agung Ped and Batu Medawu Temple,” he said. The ceremony was followed by Nusa Gede, Nusa Lembongan and Jungutbatu residents. It is meant to create equanimity when invoking for tirtha amerta or holy water at sea or ocean. This sacred ceremony does not just denote an annual ceremony, but also has a deeper meaning. Hindus are taught to respect nature, especially the sea that has given life and provided space to make a living. “The sea has provided extraordinary benefits for people such as a place for fishermen to catch fish and crossing activities. Many things are given to our life,” he said. Even though celebrating Day of Silence, the people continue to promote tolerance. In case there are residents suffering from illness and having to be referred to Klungkung Hospital, it is permissible to cross. It is just like on the Nyepi in a series of the Caka New Year. “Chief of customary village has been given an appeal in order to provide policies for people having to cross to mainland in case of emergency situations,” said Suarta. This State Civil Apparatus (ASN) in charge of the Klungkung Environment and Land Service Agency said that other than through ceremonies, the preservation of the sea also needs to be made into a culture. It can be done through small things such as not polluting with waste or garbage. “In Nusa Penida, the concern for the environment has begun to increase. The action of cleaning up garbage has been frequently held,” he said. Section Head of the Shipping and Voyage, Klungkung Transportation Agency, I Komang Sudiarta, said that outside the Nyepi Segara, there are eleven fast boats regularly operating. One unit can serve up to six trips. On public holidays or feast holidays, their operation reaches dozens of trips. “In Kusamba, there are three harbors namely the Tribuana, Banjar Bias, and Kampung Kusamba. PT BCA Tbk. officer, Agus Sumiko, said that millennials have different ravel habits than generation x and y preferring to take part in particular kinds of activities when they travel rather than just exploring a place. SO, millenials have been particularly interested in attending travel fairs. “Transactions at travel fairs have been increasing”, said Sumiko on Monday (Sep. 24). Another shift that has occurred,
explained Sumiko is that many of these transactions are done in cash rather than using credit card. “Credit card transactions have decreased”, he said. Credit card transactions have decreased by about 10-1 percent. In previous years about 7-80 percent of transactions at the Garuda travel fair were done using credit or debit cards. “SO this is valuable information for BCA”, he said. Sales Manager of Garuda Indonesia’s Bali Branch, Muhamad Ardi Kurniadi, said the travel fair encourages the sale of Garuda products and services contributing some 10-1 percent of Garuda’s total sales.
The travel fair held by Garuda in March 2018 generated some IDR 31 billion in sales and they aim to generate IDR 30 billion in the second phase of the fair. “Sales tend to be higher in the first phase than in the second”, said Kurniadi. Apart from offering flights and tour packages to the 10 top priority destinations (the ten ‘new Balis), Garuda also promotes all 177 of their other destinations. The most popular destinations are Singapore, Japan (Osaka and Tokyo) and Korea. The flow has been simulated in order to be ready for welcoming a total of 17,000 delegates. For aircraft arrivals, the priority is given to the heads of state and the prime ministers. Moreover, the parking space of their aircraft will be prepared in Bali. However, if indeed the aircraft parking space cannot accommodate all, the other aircrafts will be transferred to the nearest airports. He said that a total of seven alternative airports will be prepared such as the Lombok Airport, Halim Perdana Kusuma, Juanda Surabaya, Makassar, Banyuwangi, Solo and Balikpapan. “We’ve already called them for a meeting. In principle, all the airport heads are ready to accommodate the overflowing aircrafts from Bali,” he said when asked for his confirmation on Tuesday (Sep. 25). According to him, the arrangement of flight slots has been made. Although the process of handling delegates in Bali is a priority to deal with, it is expected not to interfere with regular daily operations. “On the day of event, the handling of the IMF delegates is expected to run well without disrupting the day-to-day operations at the airport. Badung tourism villages tend to duplicate
Regent asks Tourism Office to focus on arranging them
MANGUPURA - Tourism villages in Badung districts grow flourishingly. Moreover, almost all sub-districts develop communitybased tourism. However, this economic equality endeavor does not have its own characteristics, and tends to duplicate other tourism villages having developed. For instance, they offer ATVs, outbound packages, and the development of spiritual tourism. Diversification of the objects and tourist attractions is very much needed to create diversity to prevent visiting tourists from easily getting bored. Seeing such condition, Regent of Badung, I Nyoman Giri Prasta, asked the Badung Tourism Office to focus on managing tourism village, so that it can become a tourist attraction. “I assign the office to focus on the five tourism villages that we will build. This is for the sake of Badung people so they can become the host at their respective home village. We will help them (tourism villages) with one management, so this is the task for tourism office head,” said Regent Giri Prasta on Tuesday (Sep. 25). This politician from Pelaga village, Petang, also asked the head of the tourism office to focus on developing tourism villages by not participating in the promotions overseas. “Later on, the Head of the Tourism Office will no longer participate in tourism promotion overseas. This village tourism program must be accelerated,” he said. So, they must have their own advantages and characteristics. For this year and next year, we will focus on the five tourism villages and be financed until they really well develop,” he said. This bureaucrat from Kuta admitted that many tourism villages in Badung are not developing, even stagnant in the middle of their journey. On that account, until next year, it will focus on all the tourism villages that have been developed and they must be able to run. “In the past, if focused on management, the readiness of the operator was lacking. This is also done because there is impression that tourism villages chime in to develop similar products. For instance, one village develops a certain potential, another village goes along. Determination of the tourism villages must be based on their respective potential and peculiarities. “If it can be realized and each tourism village develops different potential, they will not mutually strike down. Tourists even do not feel complete if they don’t visit all the tourism villages. This is clear because each tourism village has different objects and attractions,” he explained. In addition to potential, tourism villages must be equipped with world class supporting facilities, one of which is toilet. This facility is so important, so that it must be available at every tourism village. The provision of homestays as the accommodation for tourists is also needed. (kmb27)

Screen legend Judi Dench honoured at Spain film festival
SAN SEBASTIAN - British screen legend Judi Dench was honoured Tuesday with a lifetime achievement award at Spain’s famous San Sebastian film festival. The 83-year-old actress, who won an Oscar in 1999 for her role as Queen Elizabeth I in “Shakespeare in Love”, received the festival’s Donostia Award, which goes to “a great film personality in recognition for their work and career”. During a short ceremony to collect the prize, Dench said she first visited San Sebastian with her parents when she was a teenager but “never thought for a second, that I would be an actress the rest of my life” and receive “such an incredible award” here. “I appreciate it very much indeed,” she added before her new film “Red Joan,” directed by Trevor Nunn, was screened. In the film, inspired on a true story, she plays a tranquil retiree who is suddenly arrested by MI5 and exposed as a long-standing KGB spy. Dench, a veteran star of the stage and screen, made her cinema debut in 1964 and has worked with directors
as varied as Stephen Frears, Kenneth Branagh, Clint Eastwood and Sam Mendes. Her subtle portrayal of complex characters such as Queen Victoria in “Mrs Brown” or author Iris Murdoch in “Iris” have earned her critical acclaim. A seven-time Oscar nominee and the recipient of several Bafta awards, Dench is perhaps best known worldwide for playing M, the head of MI6, in James Bond films. It was her first visit to the San Sebastian film festival, the oldest and most prestigious event of its kind in the Spanish speaking world. Dench joined US actor Danny de Vito and Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda, whose film “Shoplifters” won the Palme d’Or in this year’s Cannes Film Festival, who also picked up a Donostia Award this year. Past recipients include Gregory Peck, Robert De Niro, Bette Davis, Susan Sarandon and Meryl Streep. The 66th edition of the festival concludes on Saturday. US would lose out in trade war against the world: ECB
Economic activity in the United States could fall more than two percent within a year if Washington launched a trade war on a wide front, European Central Bank researchers suggested Wednesday. The forecast comes as officials like ECB President Mario Draghi and World Trade Organization chief Roberto Azevedo warn of protectionism’s rising threat to the world economy under Donald Trump’s “America First” policies. To test the US-against-all global trade war scenario, the Frankfurtbased experts fed a set of assumptions into economic models produced by the ECB and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). They simulated Washington hitting
all imports with 10-percent tariffs and America’s trade partners responding in kind -- a far more drastic scenario than Trump has so far toyed with. As well as the tariffs’ direct effects on trade, the economists tried to capture the effect on public and financial market confidence by simulating a jump in government borrowing costs and a slump in global stock markets -- as large as 16 percent for the US. Under that combined scenario, “real economic activity in the
United States could be more than two percent lower than the baseline in the first year alone,” they said. They further predict that after three years, GDP would still be one percent below its starting level.
- ‘Clearly worse off’ -
“An economy imposing a tariff which prompts retaliation by other countries is clearly worse off,” the economists concluded. “Its living standards fall and jobs are lost.” In trade, while US consumers and firms might gradually switch to buying American in response to more expensive imports, the effect is at first outweighed by the drop in exports as the country’s trade
partners buy less. Companies are also expected to invest less and hire fewer workers, amplifying the braking effect on the economy. Meanwhile, China is expected to win out in the early stages of the simulated trade war. With tariffs only affecting trade with the US, other countries could switch to buying Chinese rather than American exports, more than making up for reduced sales to the US. More broadly, the blow to confidence from a general trade war would produce “a significant and more wide-ranging impact on output across countries,” the economists found, shrinking the global economy 0.75 percent in the first
year. A near-3.0-percent contraction in overall trade would also weigh on world output. “The scenario of a global trade war will have a dramatic effect,” WTO boss Azevedo told German business leaders in Berlin Tuesday, warning that Washington was offering a “challenge to basic principles” of international exchange.
