ROME - Global superstars Lady Gaga, Ryan Gosling and Vanessa Redgrave descend on Venice this week as the annual film festival kicks off Wednesday to controversy over the inclusion of Netflix productions and there being just one female director in competition. Some 21 features will be locking horns for the prized Golden Lion, which will be awarded on September 8 at the Palazzo del Cinema on the Venice Lido, the iconic setting for Luchino Visconti’s masterpiece “Death in Venice”. The festival jury is chaired by Guillermo Del Toro, last year’s winner with “The Shape of Water”. Australian Jennifer Kent is the only woman gunning for the Golden Lion this year, with “The Nightingale”. The lack of female directors was blasted by feminist associations in an open letter sent on August 11 to the festival’s artistic director Alberto Barbera. The letter was a reaction not just to the festival’s male-centric selection but also to statements by Barbera, who in a recent press conference explained that he made his choices based on “the quality of the film and not the sex of the director”. “If we impose quotas, I resign,” he said, defending a selection criticised
as “politically incorrect”, especially compared to the latest edition of Canne, which saw a call for geneder equality in cinema. A number of films being shown in Venice have been picked up by streaming service Netflix, including the the Coen Brothers’ “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”. Starring Tim Blake Nelson, James Franco and Liam Neeson, “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” features six tales about the Wild West narrated by Joel and Ethan Coen. The inclusion of Netflix films and their contemporaneous release in theatres and online has drawn the wrath of Italy’s two major cinema associations Anec and Anem, who feel people will stay at home rather go out to watch the movies. “I can’t see any reason why a film by (director of Golden Lion contender “Roma”, Alfonso) Cuaron or the Coens should be excluded just because they’re produced by Netflix,” Berbera said during the press conference presenting the festival to reporters last month. ForBALI holds culminative action
DENPASAR - ForBALI exprese their appreciation for the elected governor and deputy governor of Bali as well as the chairman of the Bali House of Representative’s statement of opposition to the reclamation of Benoa just one day before the validity of PT. TWBI’s location permit expires. Even though such a statement came after many year’s of the people struggling, many consider that it is better late than never. It also signifies that Koster-Ace and Adi Wiryatama cannot ignore the movement by the people which has tirelessly fought against the proposed reclamation of Benoa Bay over the last five years. Without the “Bali Reject Reclamation” (Bali Tolak reklamasi), Benoa Bay would almost certainly have been backfilled already. Without the back up of this grassroots movement, perhaps Koster-Ace and Adi Wiryatama would not have the courage to make a statement of opposition to the reclamation project. “We appreciate that Koster and his entourage finally clenched their raised left fists in solidarity, even though all this time he has not wanted to make a clear public statement to that effect or actively support the people’s movement. But finally he did symbolically acknowledge his solidarity with our movement”, said ForBALI Coordinator, I Wayan ‘Gendo’ Suardana during a peaceful protest by ForBALI in front of the Bali governor’s office on Saturday (Aug. 25). Gendo added there were three phases to the community’s struggle
to stop the reclamation project. Firstly, when the Gubernatorial Decree No.2138 / 02-C / HK / 2012 was issued regarding the provision of permits and rights to utilize, develop and manage the waters of the Benoa Bay by PT. TWBI on December 26, 2012, the community protested that the decree could not be used as a legal basis for the reclamation of Benoa Bay. At that time, Koster did not make any statements of support. The second phase came with the issuance of a location permit by the previous Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries on August
25, 2014 that enabled the investors to make an Environmental Impact Analysis (AMDAL). ForBALI struggled to oppose the AMDAL assessment until the location permit was extended on August 25, 2016. Koster then stated that the Benoa Bay reclamation was no longer the affair of the PDI-P party. As long as he was a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Koster was called to do nothing. This Chairperson of the PDI-P Bali only took action to oppose the reclamation during the Bali gubernatorial election 2018 campaign. However he had once referred to the demon-
strators opposing the reclamation of Benoa Bay nasbedag (‘trivial thing’ in Balinese). “The third phase is now, the period of 2016-2018. If there was nobody opposing the project, the AMDAL would likely have passes and until now according to information from the minister (Minister of Environment and Forestry of the RI), the environmental impact analysis has not yet passed”, he added. According to Gendo, the latest protest action was the culmination of struggles carried out by ForBALI because the extended location permit in 2016 expired on August 25. The AMDAL can be declared inappropriate when the location permit expires, meaning the investors are not given the environmental permits from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. In other words, the plan for the reclamation project on 700 hectares of land in Benoa Bay initiated by PT. TWBI has failed. “We assume that until this moment the AMDAL is not feasible.
This means there is no environmental permit issued by the minister. We should win today (Saturday— Ed). But the people will continue to watch until 00:00 West Indonesia Time. The community will be alert in their respective hamlets”, he explained. Gendo also rebuffed Koster’s statement saying that administratively there is no extension of the location permit because the permit already expired in December 2017. According to Gendo this statement is incorrect because Koster was referring to Decree No. 2138. However that decree was annulled in 2013 through the issuance of Gubernatorial Decree No. 1727. New songs for old ceremonies at Festival Tepi Sawah
Nusantara-style thanks to mother nature
All over Indonesia and indeed many parts of the world, there is the tradition of celebrating the harvest with song and dance, prayers and a general sense of gratitude for the harvest yields but also rejoicing for the end of the months of hard work and the start of preparations for making handy crafts before the next planting season. In many parts of Indonesia, celebrations in thanks to mother nature or Ibu Pertiwi as she is known here, take place in the rice fields and are given different names in different places and are one of the most enduring of all ceremonies in the archipelago.

arts and crafts as well as local cuisine served on non-disposal plates and glasses. Part of Omah Apik owner Etha Widiyanto’s community engagement includes founding and hosting the Clean Bali Series (since 2006) in which youths from the surrounding community are invited to listen to master story teller and community elder Made Taro beguile them with stories about the natural environment that he tells with musical accompaniment that he plays on the traditional Balinese Rindik. “When I was young, there were two rindik in every rice fields and farmers would play as a way to relax after their hard work. I believe the harmonies for Balinese fold songs come from the songs of the birds that the farmers would hear in the fields”, explained Elder Taro at a recent press conference held in Denpasar’s Kubu Kopi. Apart from the three trilingual (Indonesian, Balinese and English) children’s books about the caring for the environment that Bali Clean Series has published, they also encourage youth in the neighbourhood to express themselves creatively in, about and for the environment and play traditional games that foster love and understanding of nature. Every artist who will perform in this year’s Festival Tepi Sawah, and indeed everyone involved in organized this low-key yet monumental event are actively engaged in community-based initiatives of various kinds raging from eco-friendly businesses to fine arts programming, bringing Indonesian musical traditions to a broader public , bring art to mentally ill youth and a myriad of other inspiring activities that make positive contributions the social and eco-systems of their localities. DENPASAR - In 2019, the tourist visit to Indonesia is targeted to reach 17 million. To achieve the target, it does not only need promotion and marketing strategies. It is also necessary to think about the accessibility and infrastructure. It needs for low cost carrier (LCC) and low cost carrier terminal (LCCT). Both LCC and LCCT are believed to be able to increase tourism growth by more than 20 percent. Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, said that Indonesia’s target in 2019 is 17 million foreign tourists. Meanwhile, Bali is targeted to reach 6 million tourists. He is optimistic the target can be achieved. “The number of 15 million foreign tourists is safe,” he said after attending a tourism discussion last Thursday at Santrian Hotel. So, it just needs to achieve 2 million foreign tourists more. Meanwhile, Bali targets to reach 6 million tourists. “So far, it has achieved 2.4 million. Last year, it actually reached 6 million. Due to the eruption of Mount Agung, it could only reach 5.6 million,” he explained. In the first semester of 2018, tourist visits to Bali dropped
by 15 percent compared to last year. On that account, the target in January, February and March cannot be reached. It happens because the eruption of Mount Agung remains to be felt in 2018. In January 2018, it only recovered by 70 percent, namely 350,000. Meanwhile, in February it only reached 450,000 or 90 percent recovered and in March 485,000 or 95 percent. Then, in April 2018, Bali reached its monthly target of 500,000. To achieve the target of 17 million foreign tourists, Minister of Tourism has 3 special ways or programs namely providing airline incentives for foreign tourists from new originations. The second way is by giving hot deals or big discounts during low season. The third one is a new method, namely competing destination model (CDM). With these special programs in 2018, it is expected to reach the target of 17 million and generate foreign exchange of USD 17 billion. visit Indonesia and so does the inter-island access in Indonesia. According to him, if wishing to achieve tourism growth to be higher than 20 percent, it should apply a Low Cost Carrier (LCC). The increase in LCC will be higher if there is a Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT). LCCT is a low-cost terminal and LCC is a low-cost aircraft. “If there is an LCCT in Bali, what percentage will grow? At least, it will grow 20 percent. That’s the growth of the passengers,” he said. In the world, full service growth has fallen from 5 percent. However, the growth of LCC is more than 20 percent. “If we continue to use full service carriers in general, the average will only grow 5 percent,” added Arief Yahya. Zambia safari holiday in Kafue National Park
IN recent decades Zambia has positioned itself as a strong competitor to East African safari destinations. As the birthplace of the walking safari alongside the traditional truck safari and even a boat safari, this is home to some stunning lodges. And with far fewer visitors than Kenya and Tanzania, it’s worthwhile destination for a safari holiday. But while most visitors flock to the South Luangwa National Park in the northeast of the country, the rest of Zambia is neglected. If you want to see southern Africa’s wildlife at its finest, you need to travel further afield. Kafue National Park
Kafue National Park in central Zambia is approximately the same size as Wales. The Kafue River gives the park its name, and the swampy lands and channels created by its floodwaters draw everything
from aquatic antelope to nesting river birds. There are plenty of kingfishers around, so keep the binoculars handy. There are some incredibly highend lodges here, not least the luxurious Kaingu Safari Lodge, but for me the real appeal is staying somewhere you actually feel you’re in the wild. Getting to Kafue isn’t easy, but the journey is part of the fun. You can land on the airstrip in a light aircraft, or do as I did and drive the few hours from Lusaka and cross into the park on one of the many unmade roads. Large areas of Kafue are completely undeveloped and inaccessible, but with the right guide and vehicle (which could be a 4×4 or a boat), there are some extraordinary areas to explore. Musekese Camp
Zambia is famed for its walking
safaris. Though you cover far less distance on foot than you would on a game drive, you notice completely different things. You have to get out early, whilst it’s still cool and before the animals have retreated into the shade. My guide, James, met me at Musekese Camp, a relatively new bush camp which has been set up overlooking an open, partially flooded area known as Eden. From the camp’s wooden deck you can watch puku and other antelope, elephant and hippo, and even an occasional lion on the prowl. The birds love the pools of water, and the black heron whose eccentric dance made its debut on BBC’s Walk On The Wild Side documentary — put on performances which kept us entertained for hours. I was told once that the purpose of a walking safari is to see about
the three Ps: poo, prints, and plants. And indeed it turns out there’s a great deal James can teach you from looking at a pile of dung! Not only can he tell what kind of animal has been past, but also when, and what they’ve been eating. Elephant poo is especially interesting because they digest so little of what they eat. Plenty of other animals and birds have cottoned onto this fact, so rather than going to the effort of hunting for tasty seeds and grasses themselves, they’ll snack instead on the elephant’s droppings. This is just one of the many fascinating symbiotic relationships in the bush. Of course when there’s elephant dung on the ground, the elephant themselves can’t be far away. If you’re in a 4×4, that’s not a problem: you can comfortably watch them from a distance. On foot you need to take rather more care.
Elephants are beautiful. They’re fascinating creatures. And they are remarkably gentle with their young. On the whole they are unperturbed by people, but now and then, usually when they feel threatened, they become very aggressive indeed. We’d seen fresh dung on our morning walk, and another guide had radioed through that there was a big bull elephant in the area. We kept our wits about us, but rounded a thicket and suddenly he was there. At James’ non-verbal instruction we first froze, then slowly edged backwards as quietly as possible so as not to catch the elephant’s attention. Thankfully we were downwind, and with the bushes behind us we hoped to go un noticed. An elephant’s eyesight is moderate at best, and this one was not paying particular attention to what was going on around him. Still, my heart was racing. (net)

Action to reduce plastic waste involves Denpasar students
DENPASAR — Dozens of schools in Denpasar were invited to care about plastic waste. The action to reduce plastic waste initiated by the Bali Post Media Group (KMB) in collaboration with the schools and the Denpasar Municipality was ended on Tuesday (Aug. 21) after being held since Monday (Aug. 20). In details, the participating schools consist of 12 elementary schools, 11 junior high schools and 6 high schools. Of the 29 schools, they will be selected as the first to third winners having collected the largest number of plastic waste. The winners will be announced at the Red and White Concert held in the series of the 70th anniversary of Bali Post on Saturday (Aug. 25) at the Ardha Candra Amphitheater, Denpasar Art Center. The action to reduce plastic waste is ready to synergize with the government and the community. Hopefully, such an action can reduce plastic waste and can even reduce the waste at landfill. Denpasar Mayor, I.B. Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra, who attended the event, said that such activity is an effort to save
the environment from plastic waste. “At the age of 70 years, Bali Post is joining together to save the environment and future generations,” he said. If plastic pollutes the water and the sea, surely the marine biota living in it like fish will be contaminated by the plastic waste. When fish is consumed by humans, then humans will become unhealthy. “School students are involved and reminded and even saved. Rivers become clean. Without this kind of activity, you will not understand. “When remembering the environment and plastic waste, remember Bali Post,” he said. Headmaster of SMPN 1 Denpasar junior high school, A.A. Rimbya Temaja, said to appreciate to such activity. The efforts to improve the sanitation of Denpasar city, especially the schools have begun to be improved. Admittedly at school there have also been activities to reduce plastic waste. It is carried out by sorting organic waste and inorganic waste every Monday. “So, the discipline of students needs to be greatly improved for the whole community. This waste is our responsibility,” he said. Students were very enthusiastic about sorting waste. The discipline of the students is even transmitted to their parents.
As a result, their parents also brought along the sorted waste to school. During collecting plastic waste for two days, one truck of plastic garbage could be collected from the entire community of the SMPN 1 Denpasar junior high school. “We contribute to protect Bali from plastic waste. Hopefully, all stakeholders, not only schools, can maintain sanitation of Bali so that it can survive all the times,” he added. Chief of the internal school student organization (OSIS) of the SMPN 1 Denpasar, AAN Winata Wirasuputra, said that since two days before he and his schoolmates have collected garbage in each class. Similarly, the garbage was obtained from home. Some students even picked up plastic waste on the streets. He was motivated to get involved in such action because he saw many people still use plastic and then throw it away carelessly. On that account, participating in the competition will further increase the understanding and awareness of the community, especially school students to protect the environment from waste. In this stage, all the candidates are required to make a paper work on phenomenology and formulate what model education is best applied in Bali. Topic to be
presented is in the form of ideas or theories that have been executed into a result. “At this stage, an educator is required to produce something from his works,” he said. TOKYO - Shinzo Abe confirmed Sunday he would run in his ruling party’s leadership election, putting him on track to become Japan’s longest-serving premier and bolstering his dream of reforming the constitution. Abe is expected to be re-elected head of the conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) easily, with the vast majority of lawmakers behind him and only one challenger, former defence minister Shigeru Ishiba. “I have decided to lead Japan as the LDP leader and the prime minister for three more years, and with this determination, I will run for the leadership election next month,” Abe told reporters in a televised news conference.
Winning the September 20 run-off would effectively keep the hawkish Abe in power for another three-year term at the helm of the world’s third-largest economy, with no real political party opposition to speak of. Abe pledged Sunday to focus on the demographic issues raised by Japan’s rapidly ageing society as well as the “tumultuous changing international situation.” His rival Ishiba has also identified demographic concerns and the regional security threat from nuclear-armed North Korea as the two biggest challenges facing Japan. Lebanese economy hammered by political crisis, debt
BEIRUT - Ahmad Harb opened his perfume shop on the main street of Beirut’s commercial Hamra district 35 years ago, and his business has weathered security and political crises in this volatile country, including a civil war.
He says this year has been the worst he’s seen: sales dropped by 90 percent and after the landlord raised the rent, he was finally forced to close the shop and move to a smaller, less expensive location nearby. “There is no business. Nothing works in this country, everything is very expensive,” Harb said, standing woefully outside his now shuttered shop. Nearly four months after Lebanon held its first general elections in nine years, politicians are still squabbling over the formation of a new government amid uncertainty over a long stagnating economy, struggling businesses and concerns over the currency. Years of regional turmoil — worsened by an influx of 1.5 million Syrian refugees since 2011 — are catching up with the tiny, corruption-plagued Arab country. Lebanon has the third highest debt rate in the world, currently standing at about $81 billion, or 152 percent of the gross domestic product. In the absence of a new government, Lebanon has been unable to access billions of dollars pledged by foreign donors for foreign investment in infrastructure and other projects. Meanwhile, many businesses are closing, some companies are laying off employees and even Lebanese living in the oil-rich Persian Gulf region have seen a drop in their business and income due to a drop in oil prices, translating into a decrease in remittances. Amid this tight situation, many Lebanese who have cash are now spending less, fearing for the future. Residents complain they have to pay double for everything including private generators to deal with chronic electricity cuts and water trucks to cope with the dry summer months. Adding to the downward spin, the government earlier this year stopped awarding long-term housing loans with low interest rates because high demand has depleted money available. Hardly a day passes without politicians warning that the worst is yet to come, raising fears among residents that the Lebanese pound, pegged at 1,500 to a dollar for the past two decades, might lose some of its value. Harb wonders where he will get the money next month when his children return to school. “The country is heading toward bankruptcy,” he said, referring to shops that have already closed down in Hamra Street, one of

Despite the crisis, the state last year approved a salary scale for civil servants that will cost an extra $800 million annually. The
government imposed new taxes to fund the new salary structure, increasing the burden on a population that has already been suffering under high taxes with no return in the form of stable services such as water and electricity. Indeed, daily electric outages are a common occurrence. Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh has repeatedly released statements assuring people that the currency is stable. Some Lebanese banks have been raising interest rates on the local currency for clients who agree to change U.S. dollars to Lebanese pounds and put them in blocked accounts for a specific period of time. The move is backed by the Central Bank, which has been boosting its foreign currency reserves. “There is a government paralysis in Lebanon but right now the Lebanese pound is safe. The Central Bank is trying to have dollars to boost its reserves in case of any economic crisis,” said economist Kamel Wazne. He acknowledges, however, that the economy “is not well” and warns that state institutions and financial policies cannot be
activated in the absence of a government. Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri, who has lobbied Western governments for assistance, is bogged down with the details of forming a government and divisions among politicians over whether Lebanon should resume normal contacts with Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government. Hariri’s pro-Syria opponents have been pressuring him, saying normal contact should be resumed to help boost exports from Lebanon through the Naseeb border crossing with Jordan, which was recaptured by Syrian troops from rebels in July. Hariri is a harsh critic of Assad and is against having normal relations with the Syrian president. “The international community stood by Lebanon and what is needed now is for Lebanon to stand by Lebanon and to form a Cabinet quickly, because this delay negatively affects the economy,” said Wazne, who also referred to the debt that is expected to grow in 2018 by $5 billion due to a huge budget deficit. designed with various games, coloring and drawing competitions. Kindergarten and elementary school students as well as parents and teachers are involved in this activity. He said education is very important for children, considering they live in Indonesia, which is always dealing with earthquakes because most of Indonesia islands part of the Ring of Fire. “A cheerfully designed education program includes knowledge about earthquakes and tsunamis. Secondly, they convey the possibility of things happening, and thirdly overcome themselves from disasters,” said Parka who also taught in the education on Sunday. WASHINGTON - John McCain, a war hero and towering figure in US politics known for reaching across the aisle in an increasingly divided nation, died on Saturday following a battle with brain cancer. He was 81. The senator’s passing marked the end of a 35-year political career that brought the independent-minded Republican within reach of the White House as his party’s presidential nominee. “It’s been quite a ride,” McCain, who was tortured during five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, wrote in a memoir published earlier this year. “I’ve known great passions, seen amazing wonders, fought in a war and helped make peace. I made a small place for myself in the story of America and the history of my times.” McCain, who was being treated at his Arizona ranch, was surrounded by his wife Cindy and his family during his final hours. “He was a great fire who burned bright, and we lived in his light and warmth,” said Meghan McCain, one of the late senator’s seven children -- three of them from a previous marriage. Flood toll in India’s Kerala rises to 445
KOCHI - The death toll from devastating floods in the southern Indian state of Kerala rose to 445 Sunday with the discovery of 28 more bodies as the waters recede and a massive cleanup gathers pace, government officials said. Lombok and Sumbawa Islands were rocked at least by three major earthquakes and hundreds of aftershocks since late July 2018. Based on data of the Lombok disaster mitigation office per Aug 23, 2018, the earthquakes claimed some 555 lives and displaced 390,529 people. The 44-year-old woman named Meiliana was found guilty of insulting Islam for asking her neighbourhood mosque in 2016 to lower its sound system because it was too loud and “hurt” her ears. There are hundreds of thousand of mosques across the Southeast Asian archipelago nation, with the fivetimes-a-day call to prayer heard everywhere in the biggest cities and smallest towns. World champion Rose Chelimo made light of brutal conditions on Sunday to scoop Asian Games gold for Bahrain with a runaway win in the women’s marathon. The Kenyan-born athlete produced a devastating break from the leading pack after the 25-kilometre mark in Jakarta and ploughed a lonely furrow as she crossed the line to win in a modest time of two hours, 34 minutes and 51 seconds. Chelimo’s gold continued Bahrain’s recent Asian Games success in the marathon after Eunice Kirwa and Hasan Mahboob -- both also born in Kenya -- won the women’s and men’s titles in 2014. Athletes from North and South Korea combined to win an Asian Games gold medal for the first time in their history with victory in the women’s 500 metres dragon boating on Sunday. The two Koreas, competing together after a rapid improvement in cross-border relations, took gold with a time of two minutes and 24.788 seconds, edging past China on 2:25.092. It was the first
silver by just 1kg. Later another Uzbek, Rio Olympic champion Ruslan Nuridinov, went one better and smashed two Asian Games records on his way to gold in the men’s heavyweight 105kg class. World champion Rose Chelimo made light of brutal conditions on Sunday to scoop Asian Games gold for Bahrain with a runaway win in the women’s marathon. The Kenyan-born athlete produced a devastating break from the leading pack after the 25-kilometre mark in Jakarta and ploughed a lonely furrow as she crossed the line to win in a modest time of two hours, 34 minutes and 51 seconds. Chelimo’s gold continued Bahrain’s recent Asian Games success in the marathon after Eunice Kirwa and Hasan Mahboob -- both also born in Kenya -- won the women’s and men’s titles in 2014. Despite smashing her rivals in a slow race to take gold, Chelimo admitted that Jakarta’s heat and poor air quality had caused her problems. “It was bad, it was too hot,” the 29-year-old told AFP. “I felt something in my throat too. The air here, you feel like it’s hard to breathe. “I felt like I wasn’t going to finish but

WASHINGTON - John McCain, a war hero and towering figure in US politics known for reaching across the aisle in an increasingly divided nation, died on Saturday following a battle with brain cancer. He was 81. The senator’s passing marked the end of a 35-year political career that brought the independent-minded Republican within reach of the White House as his party’s presidential nominee. “It’s been quite a ride,” McCain, who was tortured during five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, wrote in a memoir published earlier this year. “I’ve known great passions, seen amazing wonders, fought in a war and helped make peace. I made a small place for myself in the story of America and the history of my times.” McCain, who was being treated at his Arizona ranch, was surrounded by his wife Cindy and his family during his final hours. “He was a great fire who burned bright, and we lived in his light and warmth,” said Meghan McCain, one of the late senator’s seven children -- three of them from a previous marriage. Flood toll in India’s Kerala rises to 445
KOCHI - The death toll from devastating floods in the southern Indian state of Kerala rose to 445 Sunday with the discovery of 28 more bodies as the waters recede and a massive cleanup gathers pace, government officials said. Around a million people are still packed into temporary relief camps and 15 are reported missing even as the government mounts an operation to clean homes and public places that have been filled with dirt and sand left by the floods. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in a tweet said that more than 130,000 flood-hit houses had been cleaned, or nearly a third of those affected. Authorities are also in the process of restoring electricity connections. People returning to their homes have been told to stay alert as receding waters leave behind a glut of snakes. State authorities and wildlife experts have formed teams to come to the aid of those who have found snakes in their home, according to local media. With death toll rising daily, Kerala authorities said “due process will be followed to ascertain if all these deaths are flood related”. A 68-year-old man committed suicide Wednesday after seeing the state of his home at Kothad in Ernakulam district. A 19-year-old boy took his own life earlier in the week because his school certificates were destroyed by the floods, police said. Based on data of the Lombok disaster mitigation office per Aug 23, 2018, the earthquakes claimed some 555 lives and displaced 390,529 people. Lebanese economy hammered by political crisis, debt
BEIRUT - Ahmad Harb opened his perfume shop on the main street of Beirut’s commercial Hamra district 35 years ago, and his business has weathered security and political crises in this volatile country, including a civil war.
He says this year has been the worst he’s seen: sales dropped by 90 percent and after the landlord raised the rent, he was finally forced to close the shop and move to a smaller, less expensive location nearby. “There is no business. Nothing works in this country, everything is very expensive,” Harb said, standing woefully outside his now shuttered shop. Nearly four months after Lebanon held its first general elections in nine years, politicians are still squabbling over the formation of a new government amid uncertainty over a long stagnating economy, struggling businesses and concerns over the currency. Years of regional turmoil — worsened by an influx of 1.5 million Syrian refugees since 2011 — are catching up with the tiny, corruption-plagued Arab country. Lebanon has the third highest debt rate in the world, currently standing at about $81 billion, or 152 percent of the gross domestic product. In the absence of a new government, Lebanon has been unable to access billions of dollars pledged by foreign donors for foreign investment in infrastructure and other projects. Meanwhile, many businesses are closing, some companies are laying off employees and even Lebanese living in the oil-rich Persian Gulf region have seen a drop in their business and income due to a drop in oil prices, translating into a decrease in remittances. Amid this tight situation, many Lebanese who have cash are now spending less, fearing for the future. Residents complain they have to pay double for everything including private generators to deal with chronic electricity cuts and water trucks to cope with the dry summer months. Adding to the downward spin, the government earlier this year stopped awarding long-term housing loans with low interest rates because high demand has depleted money available. Hardly a day passes without politicians warning that the worst is yet to come, raising fears among residents that the Lebanese pound, pegged at 1,500 to a dollar for the past two decades, might lose some of its value. Harb wonders where he will get the money next month when his children return to school. “The country is heading toward bankruptcy,” he said, referring to shops that have already closed down in Hamra Street, one of

government imposed new taxes to fund the new salary structure, increasing the burden on a population that has already been suffering under high taxes with no return in the form of stable services such as water and electricity. Indeed, daily electric outages are a common occurrence. Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh has repeatedly released statements assuring people that the currency is stable. Some Lebanese banks have been raising interest rates on the local currency for clients who agree to change U.S. dollars to Lebanese pounds and put them in blocked accounts for a specific period of time. The move is backed by the Central Bank, which has been boosting its foreign currency reserves. “There is a government paralysis in Lebanon but right now the Lebanese pound is safe. The Central Bank is trying to have dollars to boost its reserves in case of any economic crisis,” said economist Kamel Wazne. He acknowledges, however, that the economy “is not well” and warns that state institutions and financial policies cannot be
activated in the absence of a government. Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri, who has lobbied Western governments for assistance, is bogged down with the details of forming a government and divisions among politicians over whether Lebanon should resume normal contacts with Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government. Hariri’s pro-Syria opponents have been pressuring him, saying normal contact should be resumed to help boost exports from Lebanon through the Naseeb border crossing with Jordan, which was recaptured by Syrian troops from rebels in July. Hariri is a harsh critic of Assad and is against having normal relations with the Syrian president. “The international community stood by Lebanon and what is needed now is for Lebanon to stand by Lebanon and to form a Cabinet quickly, because this delay negatively affects the economy,” said Wazne, who also referred to the debt that is expected to grow in 2018 by $5 billion due to a huge budget deficit. TOKYO - Shinzo Abe confirmed Sunday he would run in his ruling party’s leadership election, putting him on track to become Japan’s longest-serving premier and bolstering his dream of reforming the constitution. Abe is expected to be re-elected head of the conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) easily, with the vast majority of lawmakers behind him and only one challenger, former defence minister Shigeru Ishiba. “I have decided to lead Japan as the LDP leader and the prime minister for three more years, and with this determination, I will run for the leadership election next month,” Abe told reporters in a televised news conference.
Winning the September 20 run-off would effectively keep the hawkish Abe in power for another three-year term at the helm of the world’s third-largest economy, with no real political party opposition to speak of. Abe pledged Sunday to focus on the demographic issues raised by Japan’s rapidly ageing society as well as the “tumultuous changing international situation.” His rival Ishiba has also identified demographic concerns and the regional security threat from nuclear-armed North Korea as the two biggest challenges facing Japan. Zambia safari holiday in Kafue National Park
IN recent decades Zambia has positioned itself as a strong competitor to East African safari destinations. As the birthplace of the walking safari alongside the traditional truck safari and even a boat safari, this is home to some stunning lodges. And with far fewer visitors than Kenya and Tanzania, it’s worthwhile destination for a safari holiday. But while most visitors flock to the South Luangwa National Park in the northeast of the country, the rest of Zambia is neglected. If you want to see southern Africa’s wildlife at its finest, you need to travel further afield. Kafue National Park
Kafue National Park in central Zambia is approximately the same size as Wales. The Kafue River gives the park its name, and the swampy lands and channels created by its floodwaters draw everything
from aquatic antelope to nesting river birds. There are plenty of kingfishers around, so keep the binoculars handy. There are some incredibly highend lodges here, not least the luxurious Kaingu Safari Lodge, but for me the real appeal is staying somewhere you actually feel you’re in the wild. Getting to Kafue isn’t easy, but the journey is part of the fun. You can land on the airstrip in a light aircraft, or do as I did and drive the few hours from Lusaka and cross into the park on one of the many unmade roads. Large areas of Kafue are completely undeveloped and inaccessible, but with the right guide and vehicle (which could be a 4×4 or a boat), there are some extraordinary areas to explore. Musekese Camp
Zambia is famed for its walking
safaris. Though you cover far less distance on foot than you would on a game drive, you notice completely different things. You have to get out early, whilst it’s still cool and before the animals have retreated into the shade. My guide, James, met me at Musekese Camp, a relatively new bush camp which has been set up overlooking an open, partially flooded area known as Eden. From the camp’s wooden deck you can watch puku and other antelope, elephant and hippo, and even an occasional lion on the prowl. The birds love the pools of water, and the black heron whose eccentric dance made its debut on BBC’s Walk On The Wild Side documentary — put on performances which kept us entertained for hours. I was told once that the purpose of a walking safari is to see about
the three Ps: poo, prints, and plants. And indeed it turns out there’s a great deal James can teach you from looking at a pile of dung! Not only can he tell what kind of animal has been past, but also when, and what they’ve been eating. Elephant poo is especially interesting because they digest so little of what they eat. Plenty of other animals and birds have cottoned onto this fact, so rather than going to the effort of hunting for tasty seeds and grasses themselves, they’ll snack instead on the elephant’s droppings. This is just one of the many fascinating symbiotic relationships in the bush. Of course when there’s elephant dung on the ground, the elephant themselves can’t be far away. If you’re in a 4×4, that’s not a problem: you can comfortably watch them from a distance. On foot you need to take rather more care.
Elephants are beautiful. They’re fascinating creatures. And they are remarkably gentle with their young. On the whole they are unperturbed by people, but now and then, usually when they feel threatened, they become very aggressive indeed. We’d seen fresh dung on our morning walk, and another guide had radioed through that there was a big bull elephant in the area. We kept our wits about us, but rounded a thicket and suddenly he was there. At James’ non-verbal instruction we first froze, then slowly edged backwards as quietly as possible so as not to catch the elephant’s attention. Thankfully we were downwind, and with the bushes behind us we hoped to go un noticed. An elephant’s eyesight is moderate at best, and this one was not paying particular attention to what was going on around him. Still, my heart was racing. (net)

DENPASAR — Dozens of schools in Denpasar were invited to care about plastic waste. The action to reduce plastic waste initiated by the Bali Post Media Group (KMB) in collaboration with the schools and the Denpasar Municipality was ended on Tuesday (Aug. 21) after being held since Monday (Aug. 20). In details, the participating schools consist of 12 elementary schools, 11 junior high schools and 6 high schools. Of the 29 schools, they will be selected as the first to third winners having collected the largest number of plastic waste. The winners will be announced at the Red and White Concert held in the series of the 70th anniversary of Bali Post on Saturday (Aug. 25) at the Ardha Candra Amphitheater, Denpasar Art Center. The action to reduce plastic waste is ready to synergize with the government and the community. Hopefully, such an action can reduce plastic waste and can even reduce the waste at landfill. Denpasar Mayor, I.B. Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra, who attended the event, said that such activity is an effort to save
the environment from plastic waste. “At the age of 70 years, Bali Post is joining together to save the environment and future generations,” he said. If plastic pollutes the water and the sea, surely the marine biota living in it like fish will be contaminated by the plastic waste. When fish is consumed by humans, then humans will become unhealthy. “School students are involved and reminded and even saved. Rivers become clean. Without this kind of activity, you will not understand. “When remembering the environment and plastic waste, remember Bali Post,” he said. Headmaster of SMPN 1 Denpasar junior high school, A.A. Rimbya Temaja, said to appreciate to such activity. The efforts to improve the sanitation of Denpasar city, especially the schools have begun to be improved. Admittedly at school there have also been activities to reduce plastic waste. It is carried out by sorting organic waste and inorganic waste every Monday. “So, the discipline of students needs to be greatly improved for the whole community. This waste is our responsibility,” he said. Students were very enthusiastic about sorting waste. The discipline of the students is even transmitted to their parents.

Chief of the internal school student organization (OSIS) of the SMPN 1 Denpasar, AAN Winata Wirasuputra, said that since two days before he and his schoolmates have collected garbage in each class. Similarly, the garbage was obtained from home. Some students even picked up plastic waste on the streets. He was motivated to get involved in such action because he saw many people still use plastic and then throw it away carelessly. On that account, participating in the competition will further increase the understanding and awareness of the community, especially school students to protect the environment from waste. New songs for old ceremonies at Festival Tepi Sawah

All over Indonesia and indeed many parts of the world, there is the tradition of celebrating the harvest with song and dance, prayers and a general sense of gratitude for the harvest yields but also rejoicing for the end of the months of hard work and the start of preparations for making handy crafts before the next planting season. Apart from the three trilingual (Indonesian, Balinese and English) children’s books about the caring for the environment that Bali Clean Series has published, they also encourage youth in the neighbourhood to express themselves creatively in, about and for the environment and play traditional games that foster love and understanding of nature. Every artist who will perform in this year’s Festival Tepi Sawah, and indeed everyone involved in organized this low-key yet monumental event are actively engaged in community-based initiatives of various kinds raging from eco-friendly businesses to fine arts programming, bringing Indonesian musical traditions to a broader public , bring art to mentally ill youth and a myriad of other inspiring activities that make positive contributions the social and eco-systems of their localities. DENPASAR - In 2019, the tourist visit to Indonesia is targeted to reach 17 million. To achieve the target, it does not only need promotion and marketing strategies. Both LCC and LCCT are believed to be able to increase tourism growth by more than 20 percent. Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, said that Indonesia’s target in 2019 is 17 million foreign tourists. Meanwhile, Bali is targeted to reach 6 million tourists. He is optimistic the target can be achieved. “The number of 15 million foreign tourists is safe,” he said after attending a tourism discussion last Thursday at Santrian Hotel. So, it just needs to achieve 2 million foreign tourists more. Meanwhile, Bali targets to reach 6 million tourists. “So far, it has achieved 2.4 million. Last year, it actually reached 6 million. by 15 percent compared to last year. On that account, the target in January, February and March cannot be reached. It happens because the eruption of Mount Agung remains to be felt in 2018. In January 2018, it only recovered by 70 percent, namely 350,000. Meanwhile, in February it only reached 450,000 or 90 percent recovered and in March 485,000 or 95 percent. To achieve the target of 17 million foreign tourists, Minister of Tourism has 3 special ways or programs namely providing airline incentives for foreign tourists from new originations. ROME - Global superstars Lady Gaga, Ryan Gosling and Vanessa Redgrave descend on Venice this week as the annual film festival kicks off Wednesday to controversy over the inclusion of Netflix productions and there being just one female director in competition. Some 21 features will be locking horns for the prized Golden Lion, which will be awarded on September 8 at the Palazzo del Cinema on the Venice Lido, the iconic setting for Luchino Visconti’s masterpiece “Death in Venice”. The festival jury is chaired by Guillermo Del Toro, last year’s winner with “The Shape of Water”. Australian Jennifer Kent is the only woman gunning for the Golden Lion this year, with “The Nightingale”. The lack of female directors was blasted by feminist associations in an open letter sent on August 11 to the festival’s artistic director Alberto Barbera. The letter was a reaction not just to the festival’s male-centric selection but also to statements by Barbera, who in a recent press conference explained that he made his choices based on “the quality of the film and not the sex of the director”. “If we impose quotas, I resign,” he said, defending a selection criticised
as “politically incorrect”, especially compared to the latest edition of Canne, which saw a call for geneder equality in cinema. ForBALI holds culminative action
DENPASAR - ForBALI exprese their appreciation for the elected governor and deputy governor of Bali as well as the chairman of the Bali House of Representative’s statement of opposition to the reclamation of Benoa just one day before the validity of PT. TWBI’s location permit expires. Even though such a statement came after many year’s of the people struggling, many consider that it is better late than never. It also signifies that Koster-Ace and Adi Wiryatama cannot ignore the movement by the people which has tirelessly fought against the proposed reclamation of Benoa Bay over the last five years. Without the “Bali Reject Reclamation” (Bali Tolak reklamasi), Benoa Bay would almost certainly have been backfilled already. Without the back up of this grassroots movement, perhaps Koster-Ace and Adi Wiryatama would not have the courage to make a statement of opposition to the reclamation project. “We appreciate that Koster and his entourage finally clenched their raised left fists in solidarity, even though all this time he has not wanted to make a clear public statement to that effect or actively support the people’s movement. But finally he did symbolically acknowledge his solidarity with our movement”, said ForBALI Coordinator, I Wayan ‘Gendo’ Suardana during a peaceful protest by ForBALI in front of the Bali governor’s office on Saturday (Aug. 25). Gendo added there were three phases to the community’s struggle
to stop the reclamation project. Firstly, when the Gubernatorial Decree No.2138 / 02-C / HK / 2012 was issued regarding the provision of permits and rights to utilize, develop and manage the waters of the Benoa Bay by PT. TWBI on December 26, 2012, the community protested that the decree could not be used as a legal basis for the reclamation of Benoa Bay. At that time, Koster did not make any statements of support. The second phase came with the issuance of a location permit by the previous Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries on August
25, 2014 that enabled the investors to make an Environmental Impact Analysis (AMDAL). ForBALI struggled to oppose the AMDAL assessment until the location permit was extended on August 25, 2016. Koster then stated that the Benoa Bay reclamation was no longer the affair of the PDI-P party. As long as he was a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Koster was called to do nothing. This Chairperson of the PDI-P Bali only took action to oppose the reclamation during the Bali gubernatorial election 2018 campaign. However he had once referred to the demon-
strators opposing the reclamation of Benoa Bay nasbedag (‘trivial thing’ in Balinese). “The third phase is now, the period of 2016-2018. If there was nobody opposing the project, the AMDAL would likely have passes and until now according to information from the minister (Minister of Environment and Forestry of the RI), the environmental impact analysis has not yet passed”, he added. According to Gendo, the latest protest action was the culmination of struggles carried out by ForBALI because the extended location permit in 2016 expired on August 25. The AMDAL can be declared inappropriate when the location permit expires, meaning the investors are not given the environmental permits from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. In other words, the plan for the reclamation project on 700 hectares of land in Benoa Bay initiated by PT. TWBI has failed. “We assume that until this moment the AMDAL is not feasible.
This means there is no environmental permit issued by the minister. We should win today (Saturday— Ed). But the people will continue to watch until 00:00 West Indonesia Time. The community will be alert in their respective hamlets”, he explained. Gendo also rebuffed Koster’s statement saying that administratively there is no extension of the location permit because the permit already expired in December 2017. According to Gendo this statement is incorrect because Koster was referring to Decree No. 2138. However that decree was annulled in 2013 through the issuance of Gubernatorial Decree No. 1727.
