Harry Potter’s ‘Cursed Child’ story already a U.S. best-seller

NEW YORK - Harry Potter is casting a spell, again, over the publishing industry Nine years after the publication of the seventh and last book in the best-selling boy wizard series, pre-orders for the script of a new, sold-out London play is the most pre-ordered book since 2007 in the United States, retail book sellers Barnes & Noble said on Monday. “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is billed as the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and is to be published at midnight on July 31. A script rather than a narrative novel, it is being published a day after the official opening of the London stage production of the same name. The play, based on an idea by British author and Potter creator J.K. Rowling, is set 19 years after “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” It features a grownup Potter as an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic and father of three children who is grappling with his past. Barnes and Noble said in a statement that “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” was the U.S. company’s most pre-ordered book since 2007’s “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” - the final book in the original series. Amazon Books said “Cursed Child” was already its top U.S. pre-order in print and on Kindle e-book of 2016. “For the millions of us who are Harry Potter fans, a new Hogwarts story is a huge event,” said Amazon Books editor Seira Wilson. “I could easily see young fans adapting to the format and using it to act out the play on their own.”

Rowling agreed to publish the script to meet public demand after appeals from fans who couldn’t get to London to see the play, publishers said earlier this year. The play is already sold out through May 2017. It opens ahead of the November movie version of Rowling’s Potter spinoff book “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” and follows the opening in April of a second Harry Potter attraction within a theme park, this time at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. “We as the farming practitioners are not feeling the effect of tourism in Bali. There are some potential in some places where the supermarkets are already selling the local products. However, the finance system is not adequate yet,” said Jro Putu Tesan, a mangosteen exporter from Sari Buah Store, Tabanan. He said that most of the hotels or retails that buy the local farm product are not paying by cash but by credits for a few weeks. This is a great drawback in the cooperation between

farmers and businessmen. The farmer needs money to maintain their farm thus resulting in good products. “To make this better, there is a need of positive spirit from the government and others. The special attention is needed to make the local farm product entering Bali tourism business,” he added. Jro Putu Tesan also hopes that there are certain government departments or bank that can help farmers in term of funding. So, the farmers can produce high quality products

and continually can supply the hotels or retail industry. “I already export mangosteen and abroad especially in China, our fruits received great appreciation. So it should receive the same one domestically,” he added. Meanwhile, Ni Wayan Sri Sutar, a lecturer of Agricultural Faculty in Udayana University said that the number of students entering the faculty is increasing every year. The students are educated to be entrepreneurs in agriculture after they graduate.

However, currently the agricultural graduates cannot gain capital or fund easily. She stated that there is a need of actions in making the youth loving their farm, not only but talking. Some of her suggestion is to give scholarship for the students and the private sector can help in the marketing part. Agriculture has great potentials to develop if the cooperation is clear. Sri Sutar said that so far that the local agricultural products actually can enter the hotels or supermarket but the price is not suitable and it is paid by credit. “There is a great gap between tourism and farming in Bali. There is a need of political will from the government to remove this,” she said. She also hopes that everyone must find the solution on this matter. (win)

Though inflation of Bali low, some risks need to be alerted

DENPASAR - Amid the slowdown of national and global economy, the development of Bali’s economy shows an encouraging result. The growth of Bali’s economy in the first quarter of 2016 can grow higher than the previous quarter reaching 5.96 percent (yoy) to 6.04 percent (yoy) and higher than the national growth rate of 4.92 percent (yoy). Improvement of the economic growth is shored up by the sectors playing an important role in tourism industry such as in the sector of wholesale and retail trade, provi-

sion of accommodation, food and drink as well as the transport. “This condition is also supported by a visa-free policy for international travelers, continued increase in ho-

tel infrastructure as well as position of Bali remaining to become the main destination for holiday season and the center for national and international MICE venue organization,” explained Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia, Hendar. Currently the regional inflation control team (TPID) of Bali has been strengthened with the presence of the TPID in nine districts / municipality. Of course, the collabo-

ration between Bank Indonesia (BI) and local governments both at the provincial and district / municipality level should be maintained in keeping the effectiveness of the efforts to control inflation in the region. Inflation in Bali is relatively low and under control, and even lower than the national inflation rate. The inflation risks include the high dependence on food from outside Bali, non-optimal utilization of the facilities available at harbor, non-efficient market structure and trade patterns being vulnerable to price fluctuations. In the meantime, banking development in Bali shows a slowdown in line with the slowdown in the performance of the national banking system. Asset growth of commercial banks in Bali takes place more weakly sourcing from limited loan growth. Credit in May 2016 grew by 9.5 percent (yoy), lower than the average growth in 2015 and being able to grow in two digits, caused by the banking policies increasingly cautious in line with the increase in NPL (gross) from 2.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2015 to 2.5 percent in May 2016. “We consider that Bali province has a strategic role in the constellation of the national economy,” he added. Performance of Bali’s economy remaining to rise through the main tourism-driving sectors generated an expectation on the persistence of the sources of regional economic growth that can support the slowing national economic growth. DENPASAR - Mass vaccination started in April will soon come to an end on July 30. As of July 24, the total vaccination coverage in dogs has reached 81 percent or 358,554 dogs of the 443,344 dog populations. In addition, from January to July 22, 2016, out of 836 dog samples, 139 cases were tested positive for rabies. To manage the dog bite cases correctly, IKG Nata Kesuma, the Division Head of the Animal Health at the Bali Livestock and Animal Health Agency, explained that after bitten the victims were taken to clinic to get treatment in appropriate with standard operating procedures. “From the health center is also obtained the information about dog bite whether the dog has high risk or low risk,” he said,

Monday (Jul. 25). Dog handling will be done by the clinic so that there is coordination between the health agency and the livestock and animal health. It is said that the effort will be further strengthened in the handling of rabies cases. A dog is said to have high risk when they disappeared, died during the observation, laboratory results showed if the dog is positive for rabies, the dog is not vaccinated, and behavior of the dog shows rabies symptoms. Division Head of the Disease Control and Environmental Sanitation (P2PL) at the Bali Health Agency, I Gede Wira Sunetra, added that bite cases can be divided into high and low risk. A bite is considered high when happening

in the area of shoulders upward, fingertips and deeply wounded. On that account, the victims must be immediately given anti-rabies vaccine. “If the dog is positive for rabies, it needs to be given additional anti-rabies serum,” he added. Anti-rabies vaccine should be given three times. First administration is meant to initiate antibody, the second to go up against rabies germs, and the third to kill the germs of remaining rabies. “The antibody will be formed in the week 7,” he added. All this time, he said, the death case due to rabies happens because the victims do not have access to anti-rabies vaccine and some victims did not get complete vaccine for three times. (kmb42)

This year, Bali Safari & Marine Park marked its annual commemoration of National Children’s Day with a difference. The day dedicated especially to kids was, coincidentally, also the birthday of a much-loved and attractive member of the Bali Safari and Marine Park’s family – Niluh, an orangutan, who just turned 8 years old. Niluh – very much a kid in her own right – invited 55 children from the Al Ittihad Rasyid Wa Habib Orphanage to join her birthday celebration and partake in a fun-filled day at the Park. Niluh revealed her remarkable skills as a party host by opening the many wondrous attractions in 40-hectare party to the visiting children on her birthday. The excited brood of kids climbed aboard special caravans that went on a mesmerizing motorized Safari Journey – traveling through large enclosures that are home to animals from Indonesia, India and Africa. At Niluh’s insistence, the children also enjoyed an informative and inspirational visit to the elephant and tiger shows, watched the collossal stage performance at the Bali Agung Show and were set free to try the many thrilling rides located in the Park’s Fun Zone.

No birthday party can be considered complete without sharing a traditional birthday cake - this one made to Niluh’s recipe by Park team members and comprised of a wide range of fresh tropical fruits. Niluh, who is part of the internationally recognized rare species breeding program at the Bali Safari and Marine Park, was born on July 13, 2008, to her proud parents, mother Mega and father Joni. With orangutans living from 35-45 years, Niluh is still very much considered a juvenile and lives “at home” with her parents where each day they meet and greet thousands of Park visitors. Orangutans, like their human counterparts, possess distinct individual personalities. Niluh is considered both friendly and clever by all who work with her, and can be fiercely protective of all her caretakers at the Park.

‘Pokemon Go’ players stumble on hidden history

PROVIDENCE — Historical markers have long dotted the landscape, often barely noticed by passers-by — until they became treasure-filled stops this month on the “Pokemon Go” trail. Players hunting for fictional creatures on their smartphones are now visiting real-life memorial plaques, statues, mosaics and landmarks, ranging from a Civil War battlefield in Chancellorsville, Virginia, to a Hells Angels clubhouse on New Zealand’s North Island. Some don’t bother to linger at these Pokestops, staying just long enough to stock up on the virtual balls they’ll use to bonk and capture the next Pokemon. But for others, the GPS-powered “augmented reality” game is heightening awareness of the history and geography of their neighborhoods. “Before I was just going from Point A to Point B, but now I’m learning things,” said 15-year-old Jaiden Cruz as he walked by a plaque Wednesday in downtown Providence, Rhode Island, marking where Abraham Lincoln spoke at an old railroad hall in 1860. The plaque is a Pokestop, and shortly before Cruz arrived, another player dropped a “lure module” that attracts Pokemon to the site. The 380-year-old city abounds with Pokestops, including the nation’s oldest Baptist church — founded by religious dissident Roger Williams in 1638 — and a stone marking where French troops camped during the Revolutionary War. “It gets you to learn about your surroundings,” said 59-year-old Cheryl DiMarzio, who on the ad-

Prats said his website’s views have quadrupled since the game launched , possibly because gamers are looking to get ahead and find new stops. His editors in recent days have had to strike down a rash of “bogus” submissions for markers that have no historical significance but that he suspects might be near where players live or where businesses are hoping for foot traffic , he said. Game maker Niantic Labs , which began as an internal Google startup, originally used the markers for its earlier game, Ingress, which

attracted a smaller but dedicated community when it launched in 2012. Niantic, which spun off from Google last year, did not respond to emails seeking comment about its “Pokemon Go” locations. But the Ingress website gives clues about how the Pokestops were created. Before closing off submissions, Ingress invited its users to identify new locations for “portals,” real-life places of cultural significance that gamers try to capture and connect on the Ingress app. The company sought spots “with a cool story, a place in history or educational value” or a “cool piece of art or unique architecture.” It prized libraries and little-known gems, and welcomed places of worship because they are “a nod to the otherworldly” that amplified the game’s mysterious tone. Ingress player John Jannotti, who teaches computer science at Brown University, said he began stumbling upon the hidden history of his Providence neighborhood, including obscure stone markers showing the location of race riots where white mobs attacked black residents in the early 19th century. DENPASAR - The tax amnesty program given by the government to taxpayers is expected to bring in fresh air to the Indonesia’s economy. In addition, the program is expected to revive the real estate business having been lethargic within the past two years. “There will be much money coming into Indonesia through bank. One of the distributions is passing through the property sector,” said Gede Suardita, Director of PT Bumi Cempaka Asri (BCA) Land, Sunday (Jul. 24). With the tax amnesty, the government will have sufficient fund to carry out infrastructure development, the SBI continues to fall, the rupiah continues to strengthen, foreign exchange reserve rises and stock index continues to show a remarkable achievement in terms of improvement. In addition, when the world’s economy weakens, Indonesia will instead lead to a positive economic direction. In the meantime, according to the Director of PT SKI Land, Gede Semadi Putra, positive sentiment in the economic market begins to be felt. On that account, it is time to eliminate the perception if the economy is still sluggish and the investment should be begun soon while the prices are still affordable, especially in the property sector. “It’s time to work, work and work,” he said. He had confidence after attending a national seminar on Tax Amnesty delivered directly by the Directorate General of Taxation, Ken Dwijugestiadi. “I was present with Mr. Suardita as Deputy Chairman of the Real Estate Indonesia (REI) Bali in charge of Financing and Taxation Division. Currently, the government provides an opportunity for those saving money outside the country and the taxpayers whose report on tax invoice report is not correct. If there is still being hidden or the tax report is not correct it will be imposed with the penalties of 200 percent. Based on the Law No.11/2016, the correction of taxpayer data will be kept confidential so that the data will not be publicly known. “How many assets you have and where they are will be guaranteed by the Directorate General of Taxation and not be exposed because it has been set forth in the law. Whoever disseminates the information will be jailed,” said Semadi. He added that the data cannot even be used as the basis of an inquiry, investigation or criminal prosecution. Besides, the property entrepreneur appreciated it because in Article 12 of Law No.11/2016 is mentioned that repatriation fund from overseas may be used to invest in several fields, including property. However, the mechanism is adjusted, where it must be placed first in the Bank of Perception namely the bank designated to make payments in relation to financial transactions of the government. After that, it can be used for investment in properties. “We must be optimistic that property business can rise with the program. Thus, the economy of Bali continues to increase and the low-income communities can have a house,” he said. (kmb36)

SINGARAJA - Poverty rate is highlighted by Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana, that it is not merely triggered by difficulties in obtaining employment or structural poverty. Golf removed from tax object

MANGUPURA - The government of Badung will be subject to the rules prohibiting taxation against the venue of entertainment. A number of entertainment tax objects having been prohibited include the golf, billiards and bowling. Regent of Badung, Nyoman Giri Prasta, said that golf and billiard tax is not a priority for the revenue of the Badung region. “We will be subject to the rules. It indeed contributes to the revenue but is not a priority,” said Regent Giri Prasta, Monday (Jul. 25). According to him, Badung is currently undertaking an expansion in the form of tax intensification and extension. With these two strategies, the regent is confident that the tax no longer be levied will be compensated with the income acquired. As well, he said that many travelers stay at boarding house at IDR 3 million per month. This means that every day, travelers only pay at IDR 100,000. The situation will be different if the travelers stay at hotel with the tariff of IDR 1.5 million per day. Therefore, Badung loses revenues from accommodation at IDR 1.4 million per day multiplied by the number of travelers staying at boarding house. “This will be targeted so that the losses can be minimized. The other opportunity intensification can be obtained from the advertisement tax,” he said. It is said, for the extensification, Badung will seek the opportunities for new taxes. Thus, the regional revenue could even soar. As reported earlier, billiards, golf and bowling are voided from the object of entertainment tax in Badung. This complies with the Decree

Division Head of Horticultural Development at the Tabanan Agriculture, Horticulture and Food Crops Agency, Gusti Putu Wiadnyana, explained on Monday (Jul. 25) that when compared to 2015 the horticultural program launched in 2016 is more simplified in terms of water availability. As is known, the horticulture program launched by the government is meant to meet the needs of chilies and shallots throughout the season. Australian PM orders inquiry after teenage prisoners teargassed, stripped naked

SYDNEY - Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Tuesday ordered an inquiry into the treatment of children in detention after the airing of video showing prison guards teargassing teenage inmates and strapping a half-naked, hooded-boy to a chair. South Korea’s growth improves on better consumption

Indonesian officials have said 16 people will be executed this year, including citizens of Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Pakistan, though they have not confirmed any more details. Syed Zahid Raza, charge d’affaires at the Pakistani embassy in Jakarta, said the embassy had been informed about the imminent execution of the Pakistani, Zulfikar Ali, convicted of smuggling drugs. “We were invited to meet with officials from the attorney general’s office today who told us the executions will take place on Friday,”

Raza told Reuters on Tuesday. A spokesman for the attorney general’s office declined to comment on any time frame. Pakistan on Monday urged Indonesia to stay Ali’s execution, citing concern that his 2005 trial had been unfair. Ali will make a last-ditch attempt to escape the death penalty by appealing directly to Indonesian President Joko Widodo for clemency, Raza said. Indonesia says it is facing a “drugs emergency” and has vowed no mercy for traffickers. Its executions by firing squad have caused outrage overseas though surveys

(We must think of) how to make it positive and useful. It is an old notion that a large population is burden. But China, which has a large population, can make good progress. They become good consumers and producers,” he said while addressing the opening of the third session of the Preparatory Committee of the Habitat III Conference here Monday. Housing and settlement are problems facing all developed and developing nations. “All of these are a part of our lives, and that is why we always have settlement dilemmas,” he said. Fifty years ago, nearly 30 percent of the global population lived in urban areas and 70 percent in rural areas, because the agricultural sector was an important part of job opportunities, he said. Today, a majority of the population lives in urban areas, he said. Even in Indonesia, in the next 30 years, 60 to 70 percent of its population will live in cities, he predicted. “Why does it happen? Of course, we must realize that the global population continues to increase,” he said. The global population, which currently stands at 6.7 billion, is expected to increase to 9.9 billion in in the next 30 years, while at the same time large tracts of farmland will be needed to meet their food needs, he said, Nearly 30 percent of the Indonesian population is currently employed in the agricultural sector compared to 40 percent a few years ago. The percentage must be lower in developed nations such as the United States, where just five percent of its population is employed in the agricultural sector, he said. This means, the greater the success of the agricultural sector the smaller the number of people looking for jobs in urban areas. Knife attacker in Japan kills 19 in their sleep at disabled centre

SAGAMIHARA - A knife-wielding man broke into a facility for the disabled in a small town near Tokyo early on Tuesday and killed 19 patients as they slept, authorities said, Japan’s worst mass killing in decades. At least 25 other residents were wounded in the attack at the Tsukui Yamayuri-En facility in Sagamihara town, about 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Tokyo. “This is a very heart-wrenching and shocking incident in which many innocent people became victims,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a regular news conference in Tokyo. The suspect was a 26-year-old former employee of the facility who gave himself up to police. The man, Satoshi Uematsu, said in letters he wrote in February that he could “obliterate 470 disabled people”, Kyodo news agency reported. He said he would kill 260 severely disabled people at two areas in the facility during a night shift, and would not hurt employees. “My goal is a world in which the severely disabled can be euthanized, with their guardians’ consent, if they are unable to live

at home and be active in society,” Uematsu wrote in the letters given to the speaker of the lower house of parliament, Kyodo reported. Uematsu was committed to hospital after he expressed a “willingness to kill severely disabled people”, an official in Sagamihara told Reuters. He was freed on March 2 after a doctor deemed he had improved, the official said. Staff at the facility called police at 2.30 a.m. local time (1730 GMT Monday) with reports of a man armed with a knife on the grounds, media reports said. The man wore a black T-shirt and trousers, the reports said. The 3-hectare (7.6 acre) facility was established by the local government. Surrounded by treecovered mountains and on the banks of the Sagami River, it cares for people with a wide range of disabilities. The facility’s website said the centre had a maximum capacity of

160 people, including staff. Residents of Sagamihara said they were in shock. The last murder in the area was 10 years ago. “This is a peaceful, quiet town so I never thought such an incident would happen here,” said Oshikazu Shimo, one of many residents of the town who gathered near the facility. Taxi driver Susumu Fujimura said of the attacker: “He said ‘we should get rid of disabled people’ but he’s the worthless one.” “That kind of person can’t defend themselves,” Fujimura said, referring to the victims. “That’s why so many died. Turkey detains 42 journalists in crackdown as Europe sounds alarm

ISTANBUL - Turkey ordered the detention of 42 journalists on Monday, broadcaster NTV reported, under a crackdown following a failed coup that has targeted more than 60,000 people and drawn fire from the European Union. The arrests or suspensions of soldiers, police, judges and civil servants in response to the July 15-16 putsch have raised concerns among rights groups and Western countries, who fear President Tayyip Erdogan is capitalising on it to tighten his grip on power. EU Commission President JeanClaude Juncker questioned Ankara’s long-standing aspiration to join the EU. “I believe that Turkey, in its current state, is not in a position to become a member any time soon and not even over a longer period,” Juncker said on French television France 2. Juncker also said that if Turkey reintroduces the death penalty something the government has said it must consider, responding to calls from supporters at public rallies for the coup leaders to be executed - it would stop the EU accession process immediately. Turkey abolished capital punishment in 2004, allowing it to open EU accession talks the following year, but the negotiations have made scant progress since then. The country plays an pivotal role in the U.S.-led fight against Islamic State and in containing the flow of refugees fleeing the conflict in Syria.

Erdogan reiterated his government’s stance on the possible restoration of capital punishment in an interview with German television station ARD broadcast on Monday. “What do the (Turkish) people say today?” Erdogan asked in the interview. “They want the death penalty reintroduced. And we as the government must listen to what the people say. We can’t say ‘no, that doesn’t interest us.’” Responding to Juncker’s comments, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told Haberturk TV that Europe cannot threaten Turkey regarding the death penalty. Erdogan has declared a state of emergency, which allows him to sign new laws without prior parliamentary approval and limit rights as he deems necessary. The government has said these steps are needed to root out supporters of the coup and will not infringe on the rights of ordinary Turks. NTV reported that among the 42 journalists subject to arrest warrants was well-known commentator and former parliamentarian Nazli Ilicak. Hinting at a possible concentration of more power in the presidency in the aftermath of the abortive coup, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Monday that political parties have enough common ground to pass limited constitutional changes and aim to eventually draft a whole new charter. Organizers for South America’s first Olympic Games built 31 17-story buildings, but only 12 had been given the green light by Monday morning while another eight were in the process of receiving a full safety certification, Rio2016 spokesman Mario Andrada told Reuters. “Twenty will be ready by today and 31 should be ready by Thursday,” Andrada said, a full eight days before the opening ceremony. LONDON - Bradley Wiggins has backed Chris Froome to emulate his 2012 Tour de France and Olympic time trial double success but felt his former Sky team mate’s task is more difficult as next month’s Games are in Rio de Janeiro. Froome, who will join Wiggins in the Great Britain cycling team, clinched his third Tour de France on Sunday and will now be attempting an unprecedented treble as he also plans to take part in both the time trial and road race at the Rio Games. Having won a bronze in the time trial at the 2012 London Olympics, the 31-year-old’s hopes of a gold in Rio were boosted when his chief rival, Dutchman Tom Dumoulin, fractured his wrist during the Tour de France and is a doubt for the Games. “I think it’s probably harder for him this time. He has to travel out to a completely different continent whereas we came back home, and that is probably more of a challenge for Chris,” Wiggins told British media. Wiggins, who is focusing on the track in Rio, added that his performance at the 2012 Tour de France gave him a clear indication that he was primed for glory in London and hoped Froome would be able to build upon a similar platform. “I knew nothing was going to change in 10 days. There wasn’t too many challenges for me to overcome other than I couldn’t get down my lane (where he lived) for a couple of days,” the 36-yearold said. “He can do it, definitely, the way he won the Tour, that (form) isn’t going to go anywhere for two weeks. Paris Saint-Germain defeats Inter Milan

EUGENE — Serge Aurier scored twice and Paris Saint-Germain beat Inter Milan 3-1 on Sunday at the University of Oregon’s Autzen Stadium.

Layvin Kurzawa also scored for PSG on a stunning free kick in the 61st minute in the International Champions Cup match. Stevan Jovetic scored for Inter Milan on a penalty kick in stoppage time following the first half. Autzen Stadium, the home football field of the Oregon Ducks, hosted the match, part of the International Champions Cup. Real grass was laid down on the artificial turf field, obscuring the yellow ‘O’ at midfield. Attendance was announced at 24,147. The International Champions Cup is an exhibition tournament involving 17 teams playing on four different continents. It serves a tuneup for the regular season. Inter Milan was coming off a 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake earlier in the week in Utah. Striker Mauro Icardi played in that match, and was given the day off against PSG. The game was played amid rumors that Inter Milan manager Roberto Mancini might resign. Afterward he said that “nothing has changed compared to two days ago, we’ll see.”

As for the match itself, Mancini said: “We played for 60 minutes with the senior players and afterward it was difficult.” Paris Saint-Germain, which beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 its last time out on July 14 in Austria, is embarking on its first season under Unai Emery, who took over for Laurnet Blanc. “As a team, of course we played to win,” Emery said through a translator. “It was important as a team that we built the confidence of the players. It was great that we won, but the most important part is that we actually start building the team and create the confidence that we want with the team.” In addition to the new manager, PSG will also need to adjust to the departure of enigmatic forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who signed with Manchester United earlier this month. Ibrahimovic had 38 goals in 31 French league games last season, helping PSG to a fourth successive title. On Sunday midfielder Javier Pastore wore No. 10. Aurier, who played in the 2014 World Cup for his native Ivory Coast, left-footed the rebound of a free kick off goalkeeper Samir Handanovic into the bottom left corner in the 14th minute. Inter Milan evened it on Jovetic’s penalty kick into the top right corner in extra time following the first half. The penalty was awarded when Lucas Moura was called for a handball. Aurier had a good chance in the 57th minute but his shot hit the crossbar. A few minutes later, Kurzawa struck a perfectly placed free kick that Handanovic couldn’t reach that put PSG in front. Aurier’s second goal was a header off a cross from Alec Georgen in the 87th minute. Temperatures during the match were in the mid-80s, necessitating water breaks. (ap)

Maybe this is a new position for him but I know he played there for Barcelona ‘B’,” the former Southampton boss said. “Because he is very fast, we created a lot of danger from that. A full-back has two options -- play the ball back to the goalkeeper or play it down the channels (to the forwards). I don’t like the first option. “When you have Gerard with that speed up front, and good passes to pick him out, that makes it difficult for the opponent.” (rtr)

A winter break in the Premier League season is not feasible until the current three-year television rights deal is completed in 2019, the Football Association’s (FA) chief executive Martin Glenn has said. Newly appointed England manager Sam Allardyce, in his first press conference, backed the need for a winter break similar to the top divisions in France, Italy, Spain and Germany, to help players recuperate. “It would help the Premier League and us at international level if we could achieve that,” Allardyce said. “January and February is always the most difficult time to get players through.” However, Glenn said that though the FA favoured a mid-season break, it would not be possible until the over 5 billion pounds ($6.56 billion) worth TV rights deal, which starts this season, was in effect. “If we are going to get a winter break, which the FA very much wants, it would be after the current Premier League TV-rights deal is done,” Glenn told British media. “There is a consensus that it would be a good thing to do. I’ll say no more than that. “We can do our bit about fixture congestion and that’s why from the quarter-finals (of the FA Cup this season) we’re not going to replays.” Glenn also hinted that the timing of the break may be pushed back to January. “What scared people about winter breaks in the past is the thought of it being between Boxing Day and new year but it doesn’t have to be then. “It can be after the FA Cup third round in mid-January.” (rtr)
