US actor Tom Hanks poses on the red carpet upon arriving for the European premiere of the film Toy Story 4 in London on June 16, 2019.
‘Toy Story 4’ romps to top of N.America box office
LOS ANGELES - “Toy Story 4” romped to the top of the North American box office with an opening weekend of $120.9 million, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations said Monday.
The film, which sees Woody, Buzz Lightyear and a fretful spork named Forky take a road trip, left the rest of the competition in the dust, even though it fell short of industry estimates. It booked the fourth-highest ever opening for an animated film in domestic markets. This fourth “Toy Story” again features the unmistakable voice of Tom Hanks as Woody, the ever-eager but empty-holstered cowboy doll, and Tim Allen as the impulsive Buzz (“To infinity, and beyond!”) With the Disney/Pixar film receiving “glowing reviews,” Variety predicts it will run in theaters “long throughout the summer.” Far back in second place was another new film, horror story “Child’s Play” from United Artists, at $14.1
million for the three-day weekend. A remake of the 1988 movie about a disturbingly creepy doll named Chucky, the movie stars the voice of Mark Hamill, and an on-screen Aubrey Plaza. Offsetting its relatively low weekend take was its equally low production cost of $10 million. Third place went to Disney’s “Aladdin,” at $13.2 million. The live-action movie, still drawing well in its fifth week out, stars Will Smith in the role of the Genie. In fourth was Sony’s “Men in Black: International” at $10.7 million. The franchise’s fourth installment features Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson as world-saving alien fighters -- roles previously filled by Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. Fifth spot went to Universal’s animated “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” at $10.3 million. This sequel features the voices of Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish and Patton Oswalt in another tale of the trouble animals can get into when their owners are away. (afp)
SEOUL - A million fans of K-pop boy band BTS have signed up to have the singers at their fingertips when a mobile game about them is released this week, according to reports. “BTS World” -- set to be released in 176 countries in 14 languages on Wednesday -- is a role-playing game where the user is the band manager, recruiting and training the musicians and guiding the group in their quest for stardom. Managers and agents are the driving force behind the K-pop industry, exerting extensive control over their stables of stars, rather than musicians forming bands themselves and working to get spotted. BTS have developed a global following in recent years, becoming the first K-pop group to top charts in the US and Britain with a string of soldout shows in Los Angeles, Chicago and London’s Wembley Stadium. The floppy-haired musicians, whose ages range from 21 to 26 and who often sport earrings and lipstick, appeal to a generation that feels comfortable with the idea of fluid gender identity. Their hit single “Boy With Luv” broke the YouTube record for the most views in 24 hours, with 74.6 million hits when it was released in April. “BTS World” includes exclusive photos and videos of BTS and video calls with the band members. Using another mode within the game, a player can select a BTS member to go back to his childhood and a life away from the stage - perhaps even as a strawberry farmer.
The demand for the app has prompted its publisher Netmarble -- South Korea’s biggest mobile-app creator -- to plan a new game featuring the septet which is in its “early stages”, a company executive told AFP. Netmarble could not disclose the number of users who have pre-registered for the game, the official said, but South Korean reports estimated the figure to be around one million. The verified Twitter account of “BTS World” has 1.3 million followers, with each of its 90 posts retweeted hundreds of thousands of times. “I don’t play mobile games but I can’t wait for BTS World,” said Jessica Kim, a 33-year-old fan in Vancouver who travelled twice to Los Angeles to attend BTS concerts. The game is free to download, but users can pay to speed up the process -- each time a mission is cleared, a new BTS video or photo is unlocked. BTS -- or Bangtan Sonyeondan, which translates as Bulletproof Boy Scouts -- maintain close relationships with their fans, flooding social media with selfies, videos and tweets in Korean and English. Their popularity has translated into billions of dollars in profits for their company, Big Hit, which is even collaborating with Barbie maker Mattel for BTS dolls. South Korean performers such as Psy -- whose 2012 hit “Gangnam Style” became the first video to top a billion views on YouTube -- have previously broken into Western markets, but none have achieved BTS’ sustained success. Protesters (bottom) argue with plain-clothed police (top) during a rally near the constitutional court in Jakarta on June 26, 2019, a day before the court reads their decision on defeated presidential challenger’s claim that Indonesia’s 2019 election was rigged, allegations that spawned deadly rioting in May.
MK to give ruling on Subianto’s petition today
JAKARTA - The Constitutional Court (MK) will deliver its ruling on the presidential election dispute on Thursday (June 27) following the convening of the Consultative Meeting of Judges (RPH), MK spokesman Fajar Laksono Soeroso stated. “The RPH is completed, and the MK is ready to give its ruling tomorrow (Thursday),” Soeroso remarked here on Wednesday. The MK has organized some internal meetings as a preparatory measure before it would read out the ruling. “The MK chief, deputy chief, and judges have briefed the registrar, the Court’s secretary general, and the task force team,” he revealed.
The MK was earlier scheduled to deliver its ruling on the dispute on June 28. However, on the basis of the result of the consultative meeting on Monday (June 24), the constitutional judges had reached an agreeement to announce the ruling on Thursday at 12:30 local time. “In connection with the reason behind us choosing June 27 is since it is the judicial panel that can decide on whether they are ready to
read the verdict on that day. If they are ready, why should we wait for June 28,” he emphasized. The MK has sent a notification through email on the issue to all concerned parties on Monday. Soeroso remarked that all parties have confirmed their attendance in the court on Thursday. The MK could not declare its verdict without giving a notification to the concerned camps, at
least three days before the announcement. The related camps are the National Success Team (BPN) for the Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno pair, the national Campaign Team of Joko Widodo-Ma’ruf Amin, the General Election Commission (KPU), and the Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu). The camp of the losing rival pair of Subianto-Uno challenged the KPU’s announcement of the election result in the MK. The pair leveled accusations of the commission having “sys-
tematically, structurally, and massively” manipulated the election and increased the incumbent’s tally – which stood at 85 million votes against Subianto’s 68 million votes – by some 22 million votes.
