LOS ANGELES — Legendary “Lawrence of Arabia” actor Omar Sharif is battling Alzheimer’s disease, his agent Steve Kenis confirmed to The Associated Press on Monday.

No additional details were provided about the 83-year-old or his care. His son, Tarek Sharif, revealed the diagnosis in an interview with Spanish newspaper El Mundo on May 23.

The Egyptian-born Sharif rose to international stardom with his role in the 1962 epic “Lawrence of Arabia”—

Sharif’s first English-language film.

He earned an Oscar nomination for his turn as Sherif Ali in David Lean’s iconic film opposite Peter O’Toole.

Sharif followed the breakthrough performance with the title role in Lean’s “Doctor Zhivago,” co-starring Julie Christie. He then played Fanny Brice’s husband, Nicky Arnstein, in “Funny Girl” alongside Barbra Streisand.

NEW YORK — Faith No More bassist Bill Gould likes to think of the band’s new record as an aging actress. “Sure, her body’s getting a little older, but she’s not afraid to show it; she’s still sexy,” he said during a recent interview in New York City, where the band played two sold-out shows in support of “Sol Invictus,” its first in 18 years released last week.

“When you’re younger and you’re insecure, in a way you don’t have the mojo, the juice, you know,” he said.

The 52-year-old Gould and the rest of his bandmates — keyboardist Roddy Bottum, drummer Mike Bordin, guitarist Jon Hudson and singer Mike Patton — disbanded in 1998 and spent some time apart before regrouping in 2009 to play reunion shows.

That hiatus, together with the musical legacy they built during the late 1980s and 1990s with albums like “The Real Thing,” ‘’Angel Dust,” and “Album of the Year,” has given them the confidence and perspective to re-launch their collaboration on their own terms.

They briefly considered returning to a major label, but ultimately decided to forgo external deadlines and pressures and instead handle everything themselves.

“Sol Invictus” was engineered and recorded by Gould in his studio space in Oakland in 2014 and 2015, and is being released on Reclamation Recordings, a subsidiary of Patton’s own Ipecac Recordings label.

“We’ve all kind of grown into parts where we can actually contribute now in our own capacity,” Gould said. “We all kind of got good at what we did in different ways and it all kind of helps the whole.”

For a band that once briefly flirted with the mainstream following the success of the catchy, rap-meets-metal mega-hit “Epic,” having the freedom to dictate whether they put out a record, tour or make an appearance at this point in their lives is a top priority.

“An old man only looks to the next day,” the 47-year-old Patton said. “We’re old men.

“So what you do is, you look to the next day or the next plan, and, honestly, we don’t have a plan after this tour or this record.” (ap)

For this reason it is in the interest of businesses, government and society at large to release children from labour. Children never deserve to be forced to work.

Currently not all children in Indonesia have their rights and needs as children met. The need to play, attend school and other special needs are still not given to all children, especially those from poor or very poor families who are often forced to enter the workforce to help their families make ends meet.

Forcing children to work is detrimental to their growth. Therefor it is the obligation of the government to prohibit children from working

so that they can grow physically, mentally and socially. The Ministry of Labor’S Child-Free Labor initiative is expected to help the nation’s next generation thrive.

Given the fact that many schoolaged children are working, it is easy to imagine what the future of Indonesia will look like, of this is allow to continue. Those involved in the business sector as well as society on general must pay special attention to ensuring that the next generation will be equipped to comet with

other con tries, by allowing children to live out their childhood in a healthy environment.

The Minister of Manpower and Transmigration, Muhammad Hanif Dhakiri, said in Gianyar on Monday (May 25) that the problem of child labor is a complex one that crosses over into many sectors. Dhakiri insists that all parties must be onboard and that that the industrial sector must eliminate children from their domain. “Children of school age cannot be expected to meet the needs of the republic, especially of they have entered the work force which causes a great setback to the nation” he said.

Indonesia’s economic future requires investments that prioritize

human resources not natural resources. People who are still focused on exploiting natural resources have the same mindset as colonial invaders.

“If we base the building of Indonesia’s economy on natural resources, then we are no different than colonizers. As a nation, we must continue to improve the quality of our human resources so that they are superior to those of other countries, in terms of their competence, skills, and competitiveness,” said Muhammad Hanif Dhakiri, on Monday (May 25).

Governor wants government to fund the Buleleng airport

DENPASAR - If the government insists on allowing the Benoa Bay reclamation plan to be carried out by the investors, it the plan to build an airport in Buleleng will be adversely affected.

Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika apparently wants the airport to be financed by the central government. The governor said that he has even met the Minister of Transportation and Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) to immediately get certainty on the matter.

“The plan will be thus carried out because technical matters are determined by Minister of Transportation, while the financing is determined by the Minister of State-Owned Enterprise,” he told the media in Denpasar, on Monday

(May 25). Pastika hopes that the central government can finance the construction of the airport in Buleleng based on the fact that Bali generates huge foreign exchange for the country.

“It is very expensive, you know?

The private sector must surely make careful calculations to be sure to get a return on their investment. Conversely, the government does not think in such terms, so we expect the government to work it,” he explained.

Previously, Pastika had said that the airport construction plan for Buleleng remained at the stage of pre-feasibility studies as carried out by PT Pembangunan Bali Mandiri and Airports Kinesis of Canada.

Currently the Sanglah Hospital has a parking capacity of 300-400 cars and 1,100 to 1,200 motorcycles spread out in front of theSanglah Hospital (PJT, Kamadhuk and vicinity), in the rear area of the Hosspital and behind the Amerta Wing, and Amerta Wing, and lately the hospital tennis courts have also been used for parking. Meanwhile the daily parking needs of Sanglah Hospital must accommodate 6, 400 people:

800-1,000 policlinic visits, 200 visits to the emergency room, 300 visits to the Amerta Wing, 700 treated patients, pluswatchmen for patients (700), 2,800 employees of Sanglah Hospital, 400 residents, 300 co-assistants, 200 students such as midwives, nurses, etc.

Thus clearly the present parking facilities are inadequate, especially when we add random students form the nearby campus who sometimes looking for a place to park on hospital grounds.

If the land capacity is calculated based on economic value, according to Lanang, building a new parking lot is not feasible. “In other words, if it were to simply be a vertical expansion of the present parking, the investor would lose money and no one would wants to bid” he said. Therefor they have instead designed multi storey parking lots for a few locations, with the levy adjusted to current capacity and in consideration of the fact that the parking lot will belong to the hospital and other social needs. The price of parking ticket is limited by Regional Bylaw at IDR 1,000 for motorcycles and IDR 2,000 for cars.

The overloaded of available parking lot is not only caused by booming visits,but also by the arrangement of the space itself as well as un-staggered visiting hours. If the new parking lot is not ready in time, coopertion with PD Parkir Denpasar will be extended. (kmb42)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

After a decade online, YouTube is redefining celebrity

LOS ANGELES — It’s a meet-and-greet worthy of an A-list star. Outside the three-story bookstore at the outdoor shopping mecca known as The Grove, hundreds of mostly young women have formed a line that stretches past trendy clothing stores and spills out onto a nearby street. They’re waiting to have Connor Franta, an affable 22-year-old Internet personality best known for delivering diary-like monologues on YouTube, sign a copy of his new memoir.

The irony of a YouTube star drawing a massive crowd at a bookstore isn’t lost on talent manager Andrew Graham.

“A year ago, I went to New York and tried to get a book publisher to take a meeting with me,” said Graham, who represents Franta and other mega-popular YouTubers. “I had one meeting, and they laughed at me. Here we are a year later at Barnes & Noble in Los Angeles with a New York Times best-selling author who is a client. I think that says it all. It’s a 180-degree turn.”

Franta isn’t a singer, chef, comedian or athlete. He’s a YouTube star angling to be the Oprah Winfrey for millennials.

In its 10-years of existence, YouTube has evolved from a playground for kitty videos to a $20 billion visual menagerie.

Along the way, it’s also become an incubator for a new type of celebrity — a digital Brat Pack that’s leveraging smartphone stardom to write books, drop albums, design products and break into Hollywood.

“It’s the most powerful marketing platform in the world for millennials,” said Graham. “If you’re trying to reach that audience of girls gathered downstairs, YouTube is the venue to do that. Look at an artist like Fred (Lucas Cruikshank).

He went off to Hollywood, created some films, neglected his channel, came back to YouTube and ... crickets. No one was there anymore. You can’t abandon it.”

In recent years, YouTube, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month, has propped up YouTubers like Franta — “creators,” the site calls them

The creators’ importance to YouTube is evidenced by the Google-backed site bankrolling marketing campaigns the past two years featuring such famous (on the Internet) faces as Bethany Mota, Hannah Hart and Grace Helbig. While such creators vlog about very different topics, they usually share a similar aesthetic: improvised delivery, quirky editing and personalities that jump off screens.

Google has opened production facilities in London, Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo and Sao Paulo for creators who have more than 5,000 subscribers to film videos. The studios are equipped with sets and equipment that transcend most YouTubers’ living rooms and webcams. The spaces also serve as social hubs for creators. Several of them will host 10th anniversary parties on Wednesday.

“For us, creators are the lightbulb of

the ecosystem,” said Kevin Allocca, YouTube’s head of culture and trends. “Sure, YouTube was originally known for viral videos, and that was great and still is, but if you want to be able to build a business, you need to be able to create a following.

I think it’s a very different model than traditional media. It’s about maximizing the connection with an audience.”

That’s not so different from the genesis of YouTube, which entered its beta phase in May 2005. The first-ever video posted on the site was a crude 19-second clip titled “Me at the Zoo” that featured YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim speaking directly to the camera about the “cool” elephants at the San Diego Zoo. It’s been a decade, and while video lengths are longer and resolutions are higher, the sentiment is the same: watch me. (ap)

For every Justin Bieber or Psy, perhaps YouTube’s biggest success stories, there are dozens of Frantas. It’s a form of celebrity that didn’t exist 10 years ago, when YouTube was born and made it simple to post video online. Franta, who continues to upload videos despite his other endeavors, is young enough to have been inspired by the YouTube vloggers that came before him.

“There are guys like Shane Dawson and Phillip DeFranco who I was a fan of, and now we’re friends,” said Franta, sequestered from fans behind racks of his book, “A Work in Progress,” in the Barnes & Noble stockroom. “Do you know how awkward it would be to tell some of my friends that I watched them on YouTube in my bedroom before I knew them? It’s weird to think of it like that.”

Denpasar Junction project terminated

DENPASAR - Denpasar Municipality stopped the renovation project of the Denpasar Junction on Jalan Teuku Umar, Monday (May 25). The termination is carried out because the project is worked on without having a building permit (IMB).

The Head of the Denpasar Integrated Licensing and Investment Office (BBPTSP and PM), A.A. Gde Rai Soryawan, accompanied by the Division Head of Controlling and Planning of the DTRP, Dewa Wesnawa Wedagama, revealed that the building renovation of the Denpasar Junction has actually been consulted. However, the building permit has not been issued yet so that the renovation works by PT Eka Jaya Agung may not be done.

According to him, in 2007 the Denpasar Junction had the permit of shop, office and multipurpose building. But in 2011 the permit was renewed, and its category belonged to shopping center or supermarket. Currently, there is no conversion of building, but it merely carries out a renovation.It will remain to be used as a shopping center, office and public entertainment facility. “So, it now just needs to submit the building permit related to the changes in building construction,” he said.

In the meantime, the Director of PT Eka Jaya Agung, Joniari Panca H, said that his party has submitted the licensing document where it currently remains under process. He also promised to complete the construction permit including complying with all the rules of construction in the city of Denpasar. “I look forward to completing the permit process of this development and please be apologized because the development process has preceded before the building permit is issued,” he said while adding that the building renovation include the entrances and exits as well as the entrances to the upper parking lot. AMLAPURA - Two climbers of Mount Agung, Karangasem, were already evacuated on Monday morning (May 25) after they were reported to get lost because they were desperate to climb by making a new path from Tulamben village, Kubu subdistrict, Karangasem. Both foreign climbers from Czech were foundby the SAR team in weak condition due to starvation. Since the climbing made on Saturday (May 23), both have run out of food.

Coordinator of the Karangasem SAR Station, Ida Bagus Surya Wirawan, when contacted on Monday said that the evacuation lasted for eight hours from eight o’clock at night until three o’clock in the morning. It involved five personnel of the national SAR team, two personnel of Karangasem Disaster Mitigation Agency or BPBD, three local guides and three trackers. The victim was just found around 00:10 a.m. in the area of Galina hamlet, Jungutan village, Bebandem, due to the sign of bonfire made both climbers. The two foreign climbers were identified as Mike Karna, 39, and Monika Zawis Towska, 31. Both are known not to be husband and wife, but just friends because both have the same hobby of climbing mountain. “Having been successfully evacuated, we immediately

give them bread because they are in weak condition,” said Ida Bagus Surya Wirawan.

Other than growing rice and crops, local farmers at Subak Anggabaya also grows soybean and flowers, while at Subak Sembung farmers grow vegetables. At

both locations, the infrastructures are quite good although they still should be improved further to support the agrotourism. “At Anggabaya, for instance, there has been a kind of jogging track. But the region still needs further arrangement,” he said.

To note, the Denpasar Tourism Office is currently reviewing the potential of agrotourism and the concept of ecotourism is still under study. The Head of the Denpasar Tourism Office, Wayan Gunawan, recently said that in relation to the agrotourism development his party

the key to preventing hoarding and illegal refuellng lies with clear and decisive supervision on the part of the government. “Now, people take advantage of opportunities.

If there is no decisive action, the things will get worse. The state alone cannot ensure that the rules are followed,” said Christo.

Such breaches occur, he said, both by omission and by intent.

“In Indonesia, it happens a lot, that even if the incidence of such occurrences is rampant, the only response is stopping market operations or arrest,” added Dugis.

CANBERRA, Australia — Australia plans to pass a law within weeks to give the government power to strip citizenship from dual nationals who are suspected terrorists even if they are not convicted of a crime, the prime minister said Tuesday. More than 100 Australians are suspected to be fighting with the Islamic State movement and other terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq. Up to 50 percent of those fighters were estimated to be dual citizens, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said.

The amendments to the Citizenship Act would allow Islamic State supporters both overseas and at home to be treated the same as Australians who join foreign armies at war against Australia, Abbott said.

The Immigration Minister Peter Dutton would have the discretion to revoke Australian citizenship from dual nationals suspected of terrorism, even if they had been not been convicted of any offense, Abbott said. The decision would be subject to judicial appeal.

“There should be no difference in how we treat Australians who join a hostile army and those engaged in terrorism — both are betraying our country and don’t deserve to be citizens of Australia,” Abbott said in a statement.

The amendment would bring Australian citizenship laws closer to those the United States, Canada, France and Britain, he said. No one was to be left stateless by losing their Australian citizenship.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop told Parliament that a 26-year-old Australian woman whom newspapers reported on Tuesday had abandoned her two children, aged 5 and 7, in Sydney this month to go to Syria and join the Islamic State movement was not an isolated case.

There are an estimated 30 to 40 Australian women engaged with or supporting terrorists in the two countries, she said.

“I’m deeply pessimistic about the fate of this apparently troubled young woman, but I’m thankful she left her children in the safety of Australia and didn’t put them in mortal danger as others have done,” Bishop told Parliament.

“It’s simply incomprehensible that while streams of innocent young women and girls are desperately trying to get away from Daesh, young Australian women and girls are seeking to join them,” she added, referring to the Islamic State movement.

The government plans to spend 40 million Australian dollars ($31 million) on new intervention programs and community initiatives to prevent young Australians from leaving the country to join terror groups, she said. (ap)

DENPASAR - Pertamina, especially in Bali, has not been willing to address the government’s plan to stop subsidizing 3-kg LPG tanks. According to an informal poll conducted by Bali Post, the majority of Balinese people reject the subsidy removal plan on the grounds that small communities are not then into consideration.

Branch Marketing Manager of Pertamina for Bali-Nusra Region, Iwan Yudha Wibawa, when asked about the plan to stop the subsidies, said on Monday (May 25) that he did not want to give any comments n the issue because he has not received instructionfrom the Pertamina’s central office.

But when asked about the supervision of distribution, including allegations of people hoarding 3-kg LPG tanks, which is causing scarcity, Iwan Yudha said that there is no shortage of the 3-kg LPG tanks. “In Denpasar and surrounding areas, the distribution of tanks is well monitored. However, perhaps some inland area cannot be reached. But if there is a request we will make deliveries,” he said.

However, on the ground there are allegations of fraud at the retail level, causing some communities’ households to not have access to the tanks. He admitted that it is difficult to control at the level of retailers. “Sometimes there are rogue retailers which makes it rather difficult to control,” he explained.

As for the matter of hoarding, theft or illegal refuelling, Wibawa said that Pertamina already has rules in place so if any violations are discovered, sanctions will be imposed. “Sanctions vary, ranging from termination of business relationships, to termination of distribution and others,” he said.

Wibawa went on to say that in terms of the supervision of 3-kg LPG tank distribution beyond agents and authorized stations, Pertamina cooperates with local governments, oil and gas entrepreneurs associations (Hiswanamigas) and the police as set forth according to the regulation of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources No.26/2009 wherein supervision beyond authorized agents is a shared responsibility.

The peace plan may also be calculated to bolster Taiwan’s ruling Nationalist Party ahead of the January 2016 presidential election as their chief opposition candidate develops a competing plan for the South China Sea, said Joanna Lei, chief executive officer of the Chunghua 21st Century Think Tank in Taiwan. Ma has been criticized at home for lack of foreign policy achievements.

Dollar hits fresh eight-year high on yen In Tokyo afternoon trade, the greenback rose to 122.53 yen, levels last seen in mid-2007, and up from 121.66 yen on Monday.

The dollar has been underpinned by expectations the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates in the coming months -- a view supported by

comments from its chief Janet Yellen who said Friday she expects a hike “at some point this year”.

“The central scenario still points to a September lift-off,” said Cameron Bagrie, chief economist at ANZ Bank New Zealand.

of key US data this week including revised economic growth for the first quarter and durable goods orders.

The euro weakened to $1.0907 from $1.0980 and to 133.52 yen from 133.60 yen on Monday.

between Greece and its international creditors over unlocking bailout funds, with no deal in sight and 300 million euros of payments due next week.

the money and thus avoid possible default that could drive the country out of the eurozone.

SEOUL - Samsung Group announced Tuesday the merger of two major affiliates, as the South Korean business giant accelerates restructuring efforts ahead of a generational power transfer within the founding Lee family.

The all stock deal, approved by the boards of both companies, would see Samsung’s de facto holding company Cheil Industries -- which has interests from fashion to theme parks -- acquire general trade and construction affiliate Samsung C&T. The merger, which is expected to be completed by September pending shareholder approval, will see Cheil offer 0.35 new shares for each Samsung C&T share.

The two companies are both listed on the Seoul stock market, with Cheil valued at 22 trillion won (US$2 billion) and Samsung

C&T 8.6 trillion won as of Tuesday morning.

The combined company -- which will take the Samsung C&T name -- will target annual sales of about 60 trillion won in 2020, compared with their combined sales of 34 trillion won in 2014, Samsung said in a statement.

“The two companies expect to create synergy by combining their construction businesses, while Samsung C&T’s global network will help develop new opportunities overseas for Cheil’s fashion, resort and catering businesses,” the statement said.

Share prices of both Cheil Industries and Samsung C&T soared by the daily limit of 15 percent on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s announcement was the latest in a series of moves apparently aimed at solidifying the Lee family’s grip on the sprawling

behemoth.

The family-run Samsung Group, currently chaired by Lee Kun-Hee, has merged, broken out or newly listed some of its key units in recent years as he prepares to hand over the reins to his son, J.Y. Lee. The Lee family controls the vast Samsung Group via a complex web of cross shareholdings across the group’s subsidiaries, including Cheil, where J.Y. Lee has a controlling stake.

Samsung C&T has a four percent stake in Samsung Electronics -- the group’s flagship unit and the world’s top maker of smartphones and mobile phones.

The Lee family currently has a less than five percent stake in Samsung Electronics, a holding that will be boosted by the merger.

JAKARTA - Indonesian police have shot dead two suspected Islamic militants and arrested seven others in raids in an area known as a terror hotbed, an official said Monday.

The force’s elite anti-terror unit killed the two men during a firefight on Sunday in a village in Poso district on Sulawesi island, said national police spokesman Agus Rianto.

“When we tried to arrest them, they resisted. There was a firefight and two from the group were killed,” he said, adding that two policemen were injured.

Seven suspected militants have been arrested over several days, including five in the South Sulawesi capital of Makassar, Rianto said.

The spokesman said they were linked to the country’s most-wanted Islamic extremist named Santoso.

He leads the Eastern Indonesia Mujahideen militant group, which hides out in the jungles on central Sulawesi.

The world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation has struggled with Islamic extremism for more than a decade, facing a series of attacks on Western targets, although a crackdown has weakened the most dangerous networks.

The militants on Sulawesi are thought to be among the few that remain a real threat in Indonesia. They regularly launch attacks but these tend to target Indonesian security forces and be low-impact.

But fears are growing about the influence of the Islamic State group, with some worried that Indonesians returning from fighting in Iraq or Syria could revive sophisticated militant networks. (afp)

Palace and military officials say Widodo’s move is partly designed to counterbalance senior police officers who have crossed swords with him and who, critics say, are trying to undermine the agency leading the campaign against graft.

The police acknowledges “problems” in its relationship with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), but says it is working with the agency to tackle graft.

The prospect of a greater role for the military in civilian matters does not presage a return to the authoritarianism of army General Suharto, when it oversaw government policy as well as providing national security, the officials said.

Indeed, military chief Moeldoko has sought to quell such concerns.

“As long as the military is needed by the country to safeguard the national development carried out by ministries, then go ahead,” Moeldoko, who retires in July, told reporters this month.

“But nobody should try to drag the military into politics.”

Nevertheless, critics of Widodo’s move fear it sets a dangerous precedent in a country where the military has a long tradition of involvement in politics and which

directly elected a president for the first time only 11 years ago.

“While symbolic engagement with the military is important to get things done and to send a signal of stability, we’re treading a dangerous line here,” said Tobias Basuki, political analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a local think-tank.

“In the long term it will create a new Goliath within Indonesian politics if the military doesn’t steer clear of civilian life.”

A senior government official with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters that Widodo, the first president from outside the country’s political elite or armed forces, has struggled to assert himself over the police force and its political patrons, who include senior figures in his own party.

He trusts the military more than the police, the official said, and sees it as a potentially counterbalancing force.

The army’s expansion into civilian affairs began last month, with the first major counterterrorism operation since the response to a spate of hotel bombings in Jakarta in 2009.

Minister fears government sabotage 14 Indonesian in contaminated rice scare students rescued after misjudging Alpine hike JAKARTA - Indonesia’s home minister called for a police investigation into the suspected contamination of rice with plastic, saying it may be an attempt at sabotaging the government, media reported on Monday.

President Joko Widodo has called for calm after reports that tainted rice may have caused the hospitalization of a girl in Medan on Sunday and made some customers at a food market in Bekasi sick last week.

Rice is a common food staple in Indonesia, the world’s third biggest importer, and reports of contamination can quickly cause food scares in

the vast archipelago.

“The synthetic rice distributor ... may be making an attempt at treason or trying to sabotage the government,” Home Minister Tjahjo Kumolo was quoted as saying by the English-daily Jakarta Post.

The scare began last week when customers complained of nausea and dizziness after eating suspect rice from a vendor in Bekasi, a town neighbouring the capital of Jakarta.

Initial tests indicated the rice was contaminated with plastic and plastic softeners. Widodo, however, urged consumers to wait for official gov-

ernment test results before jumping to conclusions.

Police were waiting for the results of official tests before continuing their investigation, Assistant Police Commissioner Siswo told Reuters.

The trade ministry plans to issue regulations to tighten controls on rice imports and impose closer supervision of rice storage facilities, Trade Minister Rahmat Gobel said.

The Bekasi vendor, Dewi Septiani, told reporters that the rice she had sold in porridge was “clearly very different and smelled different too.

BERLIN — Police in the southern German region of Bavaria say their biggest-ever helicopter rescue operation saved 14 Indonesian students who misjudged the weather during a spring hike in the Alps.

The 23- to 25-year-old-students called for help late Sunday after becoming lost amid heavy snowfall at an altitude of 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) in the Watzmannkar valley near Austria.

Bavarian police said Monday that helicopters with heat-seeking cameras were scrambled and together with mountain rescue teams were able to locate the students.

Spokesman Juergen Thalmeier said the students were rain-soaked and chilled from the cold but otherwise unharmed.

None had the equipment or clothing needed for a hike in snowy high-Alpine terrain. (ap)

12 missing after flooding in Texas sweeps away vacation home

WIMBERLEY, Texas — Recovery teams are set to resume looking for the 12 members of two families who authorities say are missing after a rain-swollen river in Central Texas carried a vacation home off its foundation, slamming it into a bridge downstream.

Trey Hatt, a spokesman for the Hays County Emergency Operations Center, said Monday night that the “search component” of the mission was over, meaning no more survivors were expected to be found in the flood debris along the Blanco River.

But recovery efforts were to resume Tuesday morning, following a long holiday weekend of severe weather that led to four confirmed fatalities across Texas.

Authorities were also searching for victims and assessing damage just across the Texas-Mexico border in Ciudad Acuna, where a tornado Monday killed 13 people and left at least five unaccounted for.

In the U.S., a line of storms that stretched from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes dumped record rainfall on parts of the Plains and Midwest, spawning tornadoes and causing major flooding that in Texas destroyed or damaged more than 1,000 homes and forced at least 2,000 residents to leave their homes. “You cannot candy coat it. It’s absolutely massive,” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said after touring the destruction.

The governor has declared disaster areas in 37 counties so far, allowing for further mobilization of state resources to assist. The worst flooding damage was in Wimberley, where the vacation home was swept away, a popular

tourist town along the Blanco in the corridor between Austin and San Antonio.

Witnesses reported seeing the swollen river push the home off its foundation and smash it into a bridge.

Only pieces of the home have been found, Hays County Judge Bert Cobb said. One person who was rescued from the home told workers that the other 12 inside were all connected to two families, Cobb said. Young children were among those believed to be missing.

The Blanco crested above 40 feet (12 meters) — more than triple its flood stage of 13 feet (3.9 meters).

The river swamped Interstate 35 and forced parts of the busy north-south highway to close. Rescuers used pontoon boats and a helicopter to pull people out. Hundreds of trees along the Blanco were uprooted or snapped, and they collected in piles of debris that soared 20 feet (6 meters) high.

Flooding wreaked havoc late Monday afternoon in Austin, where emergency crews responded to more than 20 high-water rescues, and later in Houston, where the National Weather Service declared a flash flood emergency and an announcer at the Houston Rockets game asked fans not to leave because of severe weather.

Police: Several Kenyan officers killed in ambush KAMPALA, Uganda — Several Kenyan police officers were killed in an attack Monday night by suspected Somali militants in the northeastern Garissa county, where 148 students were massacred last month, police said Tuesday.

A police spokesman, George Kimoti, confirmed there was an attack in the Garissa region, and two security officials said many police officers had been killed in an al-Shabab ambush but could not give an exact death toll.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters. Kenya’s Daily Nation newspaper reported that at least 20 police officers were feared dead in the attack in Garissa’s Yumbis village.

The victims — who were on their

way to rescue another team of officers wounded in an attack earlier on Monday — were moving in a convoy of four vehicles that the militants then burned.

In the earlier attack, three police officers had been injured when their vehicle ran over a land mine, the officials said.

The same area was in the spotlight last week after suspected al-Shabab militants raided mosques and started to preach to congregations of Muslims. The militants reportedly hoisted flags before the security forces arrived.

Kenya’s interior ministry said Friday it had “thwarted an attempted attack” on Thursday evening after the residents of Yumbis residents spotted armed militants in the area and alerted the authorities.

More migrants reach Greece, approaching 1,200 in 2 days

ATHENS, Greece — Greek authorities in the eastern Aegean Sea have picked up more than 300 people who entered the country illegally in small craft from Turkey, raising the total of arrivals over the past two days to nearly 1,200.

After Italy, financially crippled Greece is the main destination for refugees — mostly from war-ravaged Syria — and economic migrants seeking a better life in the European Union. About 30,000 have arrived this year.

The country has asked for more assistance from EU authorities in coping with the flow, and EU commissioner for immigration Dimitris Avramopoulos, who is Greek, was conferring with government officials in Athens on Tuesday.

PARIS - Maria Sharapova got back in the groove at her happiest hunting ground while Andy Murray’s growing love of clay blossomed as both posted easy first-round wins at the French Open on Monday.

HOUSTON — Houston’s James Harden scored a playoff careerhigh 45 points while Golden State’s Stephen Curry suffered a scary fall as the Rockets led from start to finish and beat the Warriors 128115 on Monday to stave off elimination from the NBA playoffs. The Rockets scored 45 points in the first quarter — equaling a playoff record — to quickly get on top. They were up by 22 in the second quarter when league MVP Curry landed on his head in a nasty spill and missed about 12 minutes before returning.

Curry’s first field goal after returning was a 3-pointer that got Golden State within six points with less than 8-1/2 minutes remaining.

But Harden, who had 17 points in the fourth quarter, scored the next seven points as part of 10 straight by Houston to push the lead to 114-98 and effectively end it, cutting the series deficit to 3-1. Harden’s matchwinning performance made up for a disappointing output in Game 3.

“I always want to take it out on my opponent in a good way,” Harden said. “Just being aggressive, taking shots, getting to the basket, not really forcing anything and allowing the game to come to me.” Klay Thompson had 24 points and Curry added 23 for Golden State, which had been looking to secure its first trip to the NBA Finals since 1975 after routing

Curry looked dazed as he was attended to before slowly getting up and walking off the court. “It was all minor stuff compared to how it looked,” Curry said. “But I’ll get some good rest and be ready to go.

Since it happened to now, nothing has gotten worse.”

Ariza didn’t realize who it was that sailed over him until the play was over. “I was just trying to pump fake and get somebody off their feet,” Ariza said. “I didn’t know that he flipped over ... it wasn’t intentional or anything like that.” (ap)

Real Madrid fires coach Ancelotti after disappointing season

MADRID — Real Madrid fired coach Carlo Ancelotti on Monday as the Spanish club again showed it won’t tolerate a season without a major trophy.

Ancelotti was let go despite being popular among both players and fans and having led Madrid to its 10th European Cup title just a year ago.

This season the team finished second in the Spanish league — two points behind archrival Barcelona — lost in the Champions League semifinals to Juventus and exited the Copa del Rey against crosstown rival Atletico Madrid. While the team did win the Club World Cup, that did little to appease Madrid’s notoriously impatient directors.

Club president Florentino Perez announced the firing after a board meeting, and said Ancelotti’s successor would be announced next week.

Perez said it had been a “very difficult decision” because the Italian had in two years earned his personal affection — as well as that of the board and the fans — and “now forms part of our history because with him we won our 10th cup.”

Shortly after Perez’s announcement Ancelotti posted a comment on his official Twitter account. “I’ll keep the memory of two fantastic years at the club, its fans and my players. Hala Madrid and nothing else,” Ancelotti tweeted in Spanish.

The Italian coach is one of the most decorated in football, having

won titles at Milan, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain before taking the Madrid job two years ago. He now joins a long list of top-class managers to have been fired by Madrid, which has gone through 11 coaches since Vicente del Bosque’s four-year reign ended in 2003.

Jose Mourinho is the longestserving Madrid manager since then, lasting three seasons before leaving by mutual consent to return to Chelsea.

Ancelotti had received an ovation at the Bernabeu after Madrid beat Getafe 7-3 in the team’s final game of the season on Saturday. Cristiano Ronaldo had also shown his support for the Italian coach by posting a photograph of himself next to Ancelotti on his official Twitter account. “Great coach and amazing person. Hope we work together next season,” Ronaldo tweeted Saturday.

Nevertheless, Perez said it was time the club moved on and achieved “a new impetus that will enable us to win new titles and achieve our maximum competitive level in a new phase.”

When asked about the Russian plans to use prison labor, FIFA spokesperson Delia Fischer told the AP: “We have not received any information on the below mentioned plans yet and as such cannot comment for the time being.”

Russia’s move toward prison labor comes at a time when the World Cup budget of 637.6 billion rubles ($12.7 billion) is under pressure after the ruble dropped in value compared to last year, making imported materials more expensive. The ruble has

recovered much of its lost value this year, but is still worth around a third less against the dollar than at the start of 2014, before international sanctions and a drop in the price of oil dented the Russian economy.

Khinshtein said his plan to employ prisoners was “of course” an extension of the government’s policy of so-called import replacement, under which Russian-made production is expanded to fill the gap left by costly imports.

The workers would continue to live in their prison camps and would be transported to their place of work each day. A typical wage for a prisoner on such projects might be 15,000 rubles ($300) a month, Khinshtein said. There are no plans as yet to employ prisoners on World Cup stadium construction sites, he added. Flamengo fires coach Luxemburgo after poor start in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO — Flamengo has fired coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo just three matches into the Brazilian league. The popular club made the announcement late Monday, a day after it lost 2-1 at recently promoted Avai to remain winless in Brazil’s most important

competition.

Luxemburgo, a former Brazil and Real Madrid coach, had been under pressure since Flamengo was eliminated from the Rio de Janeiro state championship earlier this year.

The club opened the Brazilian league with a 2-1 loss at Sao Paulo

and a 2-2 home draw against Sport, when it scored the equalizer in injury time.

ROME — Roma secured direct entry into the Champions League group phase with a 2-1 win over Lazio in a heated Serie A derby Monday that featured three late goals. French center back Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa decided the match with a header following a free kick in the 85th minute — his first goal of the season.

Roma had taken the lead in the 73rd when Juan Manuel Iturbe chipped in from within the box, but Lazio substitute Filip Djordjevic equalized in the 82nd with a header.

With one round remaining, secondplace Roma moved four points clear of third-place Lazio, which has a three-point advantage over Napoli — its opponent next weekend.

“Complements to the lads,” Roma coach Rudi Garcia said. “It wasn’t an easy match but we did it. We achieved our goal. ... The church is staying in the center of the village.” Lazio needs at least a draw at Napoli to secure third and qualify for the final Champions League playoff round, in August.

Juventus already secured its fourth straight title, and also beat Lazio 2-1 in the

Italian Cup final last week. “In (five) days we’ve lost two matches that we shouldn’t have,” Lazio coach Stefano Pioli said. “These are tough losses and we’ve got to show our professionalism and bounce back and do what’s required.”

Norwich back in Premier League after winning playoff final LONDON — Norwich secured an immediate return to the Premier League and an estimated promotion windfall of up to $235 million by beating Middlesbrough 2-0 in the second-tier playoff final on Monday. Norwich seized control of world football’s most lucrative club match thanks to goals by Cameron Jerome and Nathan Redmond by the 15th minute at Wembley Stadium.

Middlesbrough, managed by former Real Madrid assistant coach Aitor Karanka, had beaten Norwich in both of their meetings in the League Championship’s regular season, but barely threatened in the match that really mattered.

“We’ve put in probably our most accomplished performance of the season,” Norwich captain Russell Martin said.

Norwich joins already-promoted Watford and Bournemouth in next season’s Premier League.

The playoff final is the world’s richest football game due to the money clubs earn from the Premier League’s huge domestic and global broadcasting deals, as well as prize money and potential income from future relegation payments.

When asked about the Russian plans to use prison labor, FIFA spokesperson Delia Fischer told the AP: “We have not received any information on the below mentioned plans yet and as such cannot comment for the time being.”

Russia’s move toward prison labor comes at a time when the World Cup budget of 637.6 billion rubles ($12.7 billion) is under pressure after the ruble dropped in value compared to last year, making imported materials more expensive. The ruble has

recovered much of its lost value this year, but is still worth around a third less against the dollar than at the start of 2014, before international sanctions and a drop in the price of oil dented the Russian economy.

Khinshtein said his plan to employ prisoners was “of course” an extension of the government’s policy of so-called import replacement, under which Russian-made production is expanded to fill the gap left by costly imports.

The workers would continue to live in their prison camps and would be transported to their place of work each day. A typical wage for a prisoner on such projects might be 15,000 rubles ($300) a month, Khinshtein said. There are no plans as yet to employ prisoners on World Cup stadium construction sites, he added. Luxemburgo, a former Brazil and Real Madrid coach, had been under pressure since Flamengo was eliminated from the Rio de Janeiro state championship earlier this year.

The club opened the Brazilian league with a 2-1 loss at Sao Paulo

and a 2-2 home draw against Sport, when it scored the equalizer in injury time.

ROME — Roma secured direct entry into the Champions League group phase with a 2-1 win over Lazio in a heated Serie A derby Monday that featured three late goals. French center back Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa decided the match with a header following a free kick in the 85th minute — his first goal of the season.

Roma had taken the lead in the 73rd when Juan Manuel Iturbe chipped in from within the box, but Lazio substitute Filip Djordjevic equalized in the 82nd with a header.

With one round remaining, secondplace Roma moved four points clear of third-place Lazio, which has a three-point advantage over Napoli — its opponent next weekend.

“Complements to the lads,” Roma coach Rudi Garcia said. “It wasn’t an easy match but we did it. We achieved our goal. ... The church is staying in the center of the village.” Lazio needs at least a draw at Napoli to secure third and qualify for the final Champions League playoff round, in August.

Juventus already secured its fourth straight title, and also beat Lazio 2-1 in the

Norwich back in Premier League after winning playoff final LONDON — Norwich secured an immediate return to the Premier League and an estimated promotion windfall of up to $235 million by beating Middlesbrough 2-0 in the second-tier playoff final on Monday. Norwich seized control of world football’s most lucrative club match thanks to goals by Cameron Jerome and Nathan Redmond by the 15th minute at Wembley Stadium.

Middlesbrough, managed by former Real Madrid assistant coach Aitor Karanka, had beaten Norwich in both of their meetings in the League Championship’s regular season, but barely threatened in the match that really mattered.

“We’ve put in probably our most accomplished performance of the season,” Norwich captain Russell Martin said.

Norwich joins already-promoted Watford and Bournemouth in next season’s Premier League.

The playoff final is the world’s richest football game due to the money clubs earn from the Premier League’s huge domestic and global broadcasting deals, as well as prize money and potential income from future relegation payments.

HOUSTON — Houston’s James Harden scored a playoff careerhigh 45 points while Golden State’s Stephen Curry suffered a scary fall as the Rockets led from start to finish and beat the Warriors 128115 on Monday to stave off elimination from the NBA playoffs. The Rockets scored 45 points in the first quarter — equaling a playoff record — to quickly get on top. They were up by 22 in the second quarter when league MVP Curry landed on his head in a nasty spill and missed about 12 minutes before returning.

Curry’s first field goal after returning was a 3-pointer that got Golden State within six points with less than 8-1/2 minutes remaining.

But Harden, who had 17 points in the fourth quarter, scored the next seven points as part of 10 straight by Houston to push the lead to 114-98 and effectively end it, cutting the series deficit to 3-1. Harden’s matchwinning performance made up for a disappointing output in Game 3.

“I always want to take it out on my opponent in a good way,” Harden said. “Just being aggressive, taking shots, getting to the basket, not really forcing anything and allowing the game to come to me.” Klay Thompson had 24 points and Curry added 23 for Golden State, which had been looking to secure its first trip to the NBA Finals since 1975 after routing

Curry looked dazed as he was attended to before slowly getting up and walking off the court. “It was all minor stuff compared to how it looked,” Curry said. “But I’ll get some good rest and be ready to go.

Since it happened to now, nothing has gotten worse.”

Ariza didn’t realize who it was that sailed over him until the play was over. “I was just trying to pump fake and get somebody off their feet,” Ariza said. “I didn’t know that he flipped over ... it wasn’t intentional or anything like that.” (ap)

12 missing after flooding in Texas sweeps away vacation home

WIMBERLEY, Texas — Recovery teams are set to resume looking for the 12 members of two families who authorities say are missing after a rain-swollen river in Central Texas carried a vacation home off its foundation, slamming it into a bridge downstream.

Trey Hatt, a spokesman for the Hays County Emergency Operations Center, said Monday night that the “search component” of the mission was over, meaning no more survivors were expected to be found in the flood debris along the Blanco River.

But recovery efforts were to resume Tuesday morning, following a long holiday weekend of severe weather that led to four confirmed fatalities across Texas.

Authorities were also searching for victims and assessing damage just across the Texas-Mexico border in Ciudad Acuna, where a tornado Monday killed 13 people and left at least five unaccounted for.

In the U.S., a line of storms that stretched from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes dumped record rainfall on parts of the Plains and Midwest, spawning tornadoes and causing major flooding that in Texas destroyed or damaged more than 1,000 homes and forced at least 2,000 residents to leave their homes. “You cannot candy coat it. It’s absolutely massive,” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said after touring the destruction.

The governor has declared disaster areas in 37 counties so far, allowing for further mobilization of state resources to assist. The worst flooding damage was in Wimberley, where the vacation home was swept away, a popular

tourist town along the Blanco in the corridor between Austin and San Antonio.

Witnesses reported seeing the swollen river push the home off its foundation and smash it into a bridge.

Only pieces of the home have been found, Hays County Judge Bert Cobb said. One person who was rescued from the home told workers that the other 12 inside were all connected to two families, Cobb said. Young children were among those believed to be missing.

The Blanco crested above 40 feet (12 meters) — more than triple its flood stage of 13 feet (3.9 meters).

The river swamped Interstate 35 and forced parts of the busy north-south highway to close. Rescuers used pontoon boats and a helicopter to pull people out. Hundreds of trees along the Blanco were uprooted or snapped, and they collected in piles of debris that soared 20 feet (6 meters) high.

Flooding wreaked havoc late Monday afternoon in Austin, where emergency crews responded to more than 20 high-water rescues, and later in Houston, where the National Weather Service declared a flash flood emergency and an announcer at the Houston Rockets game asked fans not to leave because of severe weather.

Police: Several Kenyan officers killed in ambush KAMPALA, Uganda — Several Kenyan police officers were killed in an attack Monday night by suspected Somali militants in the northeastern Garissa county, where 148 students were massacred last month, police said Tuesday.

A police spokesman, George Kimoti, confirmed there was an attack in the Garissa region, and two security officials said many police officers had been killed in an al-Shabab ambush but could not give an exact death toll.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters. Kenya’s Daily Nation newspaper reported that at least 20 police officers were feared dead in the attack in Garissa’s Yumbis village.

The victims — who were on their

way to rescue another team of officers wounded in an attack earlier on Monday — were moving in a convoy of four vehicles that the militants then burned.

In the earlier attack, three police officers had been injured when their vehicle ran over a land mine, the officials said.

The same area was in the spotlight last week after suspected al-Shabab militants raided mosques and started to preach to congregations of Muslims. The militants reportedly hoisted flags before the security forces arrived.

Kenya’s interior ministry said Friday it had “thwarted an attempted attack” on Thursday evening after the residents of Yumbis residents spotted armed militants in the area and alerted the authorities.

ATHENS, Greece — Greek authorities in the eastern Aegean Sea have picked up more than 300 people who entered the country illegally in small craft from Turkey, raising the total of arrivals over the past two days to nearly 1,200.

After Italy, financially crippled Greece is the main destination for refugees — mostly from war-ravaged Syria — and economic migrants seeking a better life in the European Union. About 30,000 have arrived this year.

The country has asked for more assistance from EU authorities in coping with the flow, and EU commissioner for immigration Dimitris Avramopoulos, who is Greek, was conferring with government officials in Athens on Tuesday.

Dollar hits fresh eight-year high on yen In Tokyo afternoon trade, the greenback rose to 122.53 yen, levels last seen in mid-2007, and up from 121.66 yen on Monday.

SEOUL - Samsung Group announced Tuesday the merger of two major affiliates, as the South Korean business giant accelerates restructuring efforts ahead of a generational power transfer within the founding Lee family.

The all stock deal, approved by the boards of both companies, would see Samsung’s de facto holding company Cheil Industries -- which has interests from fashion to theme parks -- acquire general trade and construction affiliate Samsung C&T. The merger, which is expected to be completed by September pending shareholder approval, will see Cheil offer 0.35 new shares for each Samsung C&T share.

The two companies are both listed on the Seoul stock market, with Cheil valued at 22 trillion won (US$2 billion) and Samsung

C&T 8.6 trillion won as of Tuesday morning.

The combined company -- which will take the Samsung C&T name -- will target annual sales of about 60 trillion won in 2020, compared with their combined sales of 34 trillion won in 2014, Samsung said in a statement.

“The two companies expect to create synergy by combining their construction businesses, while Samsung C&T’s global network will help develop new opportunities overseas for Cheil’s fashion, resort and catering businesses,” the statement said.

Share prices of both Cheil Industries and Samsung C&T soared by the daily limit of 15 percent on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s announcement was the latest in a series of moves apparently aimed at solidifying the Lee family’s grip on the sprawling

behemoth.

The family-run Samsung Group, currently chaired by Lee Kun-Hee, has merged, broken out or newly listed some of its key units in recent years as he prepares to hand over the reins to his son, J.Y. Lee. The Lee family controls the vast Samsung Group via a complex web of cross shareholdings across the group’s subsidiaries, including Cheil, where J.Y. Lee has a controlling stake.

Samsung C&T has a four percent stake in Samsung Electronics -- the group’s flagship unit and the world’s top maker of smartphones and mobile phones.

The Lee family currently has a less than five percent stake in Samsung Electronics, a holding that will be boosted by the merger.

tant Samsung units from the perspective of the heir,” said Lee Kwang-Soo, analyst at Seoul-based Mirae Asset Securities.

Recent health problems concerning the senior Lee, currently bedridden after suffering a heart attack last year, prompted the group to step up restructuring efforts.

Cheil Industries last year merged with Samsung SDI, the world’s largest smartphone battery maker.

The group also sold last year stakes in four affiliates worth $2 billion in a move analysts said was designed to streamline businesses and to focus on key profit-making units.

The group, comprised of dozens of units ranging from electronics to hotels, earns a collective revenue equal to around 20 percent of South Korea’s annual economic output. (afp)

JAKARTA - Indonesian police have shot dead two suspected Islamic militants and arrested seven others in raids in an area known as a terror hotbed, an official said Monday.

The force’s elite anti-terror unit killed the two men during a firefight on Sunday in a village in Poso district on Sulawesi island, said national police spokesman Agus Rianto.

“When we tried to arrest them, they resisted. There was a firefight and two from the group were killed,” he said, adding that two policemen were injured.

Seven suspected militants have been arrested over several days, including five in the South Sulawesi capital of Makassar, Rianto said.

The spokesman said they were linked to the country’s most-wanted Islamic extremist named Santoso.

He leads the Eastern Indonesia Mujahideen militant group, which hides out in the jungles on central Sulawesi.

The world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation has struggled with Islamic extremism for more than a decade, facing a series of attacks on Western targets, although a crackdown has weakened the most dangerous networks.

The militants on Sulawesi are thought to be among the few that remain a real threat in Indonesia. They regularly launch attacks but these tend to target Indonesian security forces and be low-impact.

But fears are growing about the influence of the Islamic State group, with some worried that Indonesians returning from fighting in Iraq or Syria could revive sophisticated militant networks. (afp)

Palace and military officials say Widodo’s move is partly designed to counterbalance senior police officers who have crossed swords with him and who, critics say, are trying to undermine the agency leading the campaign against graft.

The police acknowledges “problems” in its relationship with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), but says it is working with the agency to tackle graft.

The prospect of a greater role for the military in civilian matters does not presage a return to the authoritarianism of army General Suharto, when it oversaw government policy as well as providing national security, the officials said.

Indeed, military chief Moeldoko has sought to quell such concerns.

“As long as the military is needed by the country to safeguard the national development carried out by ministries, then go ahead,” Moeldoko, who retires in July, told reporters this month.

“But nobody should try to drag the military into politics.”

Nevertheless, critics of Widodo’s move fear it sets a dangerous precedent in a country where the military has a long tradition of involvement in politics and which

directly elected a president for the first time only 11 years ago.

“While symbolic engagement with the military is important to get things done and to send a signal of stability, we’re treading a dangerous line here,” said Tobias Basuki, political analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a local think-tank.

“In the long term it will create a new Goliath within Indonesian politics if the military doesn’t steer clear of civilian life.”

A senior government official with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters that Widodo, the first president from outside the country’s political elite or armed forces, has struggled to assert himself over the police force and its political patrons, who include senior figures in his own party.

He trusts the military more than the police, the official said, and sees it as a potentially counterbalancing force.

The army’s expansion into civilian affairs began last month, with the first major counterterrorism operation since the response to a spate of hotel bombings in Jakarta in 2009.

Anti-terrorism efforts are traditionally the domain of the police. (rtr)

Minister fears government sabotage 14 Indonesian in contaminated rice scare students rescued after misjudging Alpine hike JAKARTA - Indonesia’s home minister called for a police investigation into the suspected contamination of rice with plastic, saying it may be an attempt at sabotaging the government, media reported on Monday.

President Joko Widodo has called for calm after reports that tainted rice may have caused the hospitalization of a girl in Medan on Sunday and made some customers at a food market in Bekasi sick last week.

Rice is a common food staple in Indonesia, the world’s third biggest importer, and reports of contamination can quickly cause food scares in

the vast archipelago.

“The synthetic rice distributor ... may be making an attempt at treason or trying to sabotage the government,” Home Minister Tjahjo Kumolo was quoted as saying by the English-daily Jakarta Post.

The scare began last week when customers complained of nausea and dizziness after eating suspect rice from a vendor in Bekasi, a town neighbouring the capital of Jakarta.

Initial tests indicated the rice was contaminated with plastic and plastic softeners. Widodo, however, urged consumers to wait for official gov-

ernment test results before jumping to conclusions.

Police were waiting for the results of official tests before continuing their investigation, Assistant Police Commissioner Siswo told Reuters.

The trade ministry plans to issue regulations to tighten controls on rice imports and impose closer supervision of rice storage facilities, Trade Minister Rahmat Gobel said.

The Bekasi vendor, Dewi Septiani, told reporters that the rice she had sold in porridge was “clearly very different and smelled different too.

BERLIN — Police in the southern German region of Bavaria say their biggest-ever helicopter rescue operation saved 14 Indonesian students who misjudged the weather during a spring hike in the Alps.

The 23- to 25-year-old-students called for help late Sunday after becoming lost amid heavy snowfall at an altitude of 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) in the Watzmannkar valley near Austria.

Bavarian police said Monday that helicopters with heat-seeking cameras were scrambled and together with mountain rescue teams were able to locate the students.

Spokesman Juergen Thalmeier said the students were rain-soaked and chilled from the cold but otherwise unharmed.

None had the equipment or clothing needed for a hike in snowy high-Alpine terrain. (ap)

If there is no decisive action, the things will get worse. The state alone cannot ensure that the rules are followed,” said Christo.

Such breaches occur, he said, both by omission and by intent.

“In Indonesia, it happens a lot, that even if the incidence of such occurrences is rampant, the only response is stopping market operations or arrest,” added Dugis.

CANBERRA, Australia — Australia plans to pass a law within weeks to give the government power to strip citizenship from dual nationals who are suspected terrorists even if they are not convicted of a crime, the prime minister said Tuesday. More than 100 Australians are suspected to be fighting with the Islamic State movement and other terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq. Up to 50 percent of those fighters were estimated to be dual citizens, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said.

The amendments to the Citizenship Act would allow Islamic State supporters both overseas and at home to be treated the same as Australians who join foreign armies at war against Australia, Abbott said.

The Immigration Minister Peter Dutton would have the discretion to revoke Australian citizenship from dual nationals suspected of terrorism, even if they had been not been convicted of any offense, Abbott said. The decision would be subject to judicial appeal.

“There should be no difference in how we treat Australians who join a hostile army and those engaged in terrorism — both are betraying our country and don’t deserve to be citizens of Australia,” Abbott said in a statement.

The amendment would bring Australian citizenship laws closer to those the United States, Canada, France and Britain, he said. No one was to be left stateless by losing their Australian citizenship.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop told Parliament that a 26-year-old Australian woman whom newspapers reported on Tuesday had abandoned her two children, aged 5 and 7, in Sydney this month to go to Syria and join the Islamic State movement was not an isolated case.

There are an estimated 30 to 40 Australian women engaged with or supporting terrorists in the two countries, she said.

“I’m deeply pessimistic about the fate of this apparently troubled young woman, but I’m thankful she left her children in the safety of Australia and didn’t put them in mortal danger as others have done,” Bishop told Parliament.

“It’s simply incomprehensible that while streams of innocent young women and girls are desperately trying to get away from Daesh, young Australian women and girls are seeking to join them,” she added, referring to the Islamic State movement.

The government plans to spend 40 million Australian dollars ($31 million) on new intervention programs and community initiatives to prevent young Australians from leaving the country to join terror groups, she said. (ap)

DENPASAR - Pertamina, especially in Bali, has not been willing to address the government’s plan to stop subsidizing 3-kg LPG tanks. According to an informal poll conducted by Bali Post, the majority of Balinese people reject the subsidy removal plan on the grounds that small communities are not then into consideration.

Branch Marketing Manager of Pertamina for Bali-Nusra Region, Iwan Yudha Wibawa, when asked about the plan to stop the subsidies, said on Monday (May 25) that he did not want to give any comments n the issue because he has not received instructionfrom the Pertamina’s central office.

But when asked about the supervision of distribution, including allegations of people hoarding 3-kg LPG tanks, which is causing scarcity, Iwan Yudha said that there is no shortage of the 3-kg LPG tanks. “In Denpasar and surrounding areas, the distribution of tanks is well monitored. However, perhaps some inland area cannot be reached. But if there is a request we will make deliveries,” he said.

However, on the ground there are allegations of fraud at the retail level, causing some communities’ households to not have access to the tanks. He admitted that it is difficult to control at the level of retailers. “Sometimes there are rogue retailers which makes it rather difficult to control,” he explained.

As for the matter of hoarding, theft or illegal refuelling, Wibawa said that Pertamina already has rules in place so if any violations are discovered, sanctions will be imposed. “Sanctions vary, ranging from termination of business relationships, to termination of distribution and others,” he said.

Wibawa went on to say that in terms of the supervision of 3-kg LPG tank distribution beyond agents and authorized stations, Pertamina cooperates with local governments, oil and gas entrepreneurs associations (Hiswanamigas) and the police as set forth according to the regulation of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources No.26/2009 wherein supervision beyond authorized agents is a shared responsibility.

The peace plan may also be calculated to bolster Taiwan’s ruling Nationalist Party ahead of the January 2016 presidential election as their chief opposition candidate develops a competing plan for the South China Sea, said Joanna Lei, chief executive officer of the Chunghua 21st Century Think Tank in Taiwan. After a decade online, YouTube is redefining celebrity

LOS ANGELES — It’s a meet-and-greet worthy of an A-list star. Outside the three-story bookstore at the outdoor shopping mecca known as The Grove, hundreds of mostly young women have formed a line that stretches past trendy clothing stores and spills out onto a nearby street. They’re waiting to have Connor Franta, an affable 22-year-old Internet personality best known for delivering diary-like monologues on YouTube, sign a copy of his new memoir.

The irony of a YouTube star drawing a massive crowd at a bookstore isn’t lost on talent manager Andrew Graham.

“A year ago, I went to New York and tried to get a book publisher to take a meeting with me,” said Graham, who represents Franta and other mega-popular YouTubers. “I had one meeting, and they laughed at me. Here we are a year later at Barnes & Noble in Los Angeles with a New York Times best-selling author who is a client. I think that says it all. It’s a 180-degree turn.”

Franta isn’t a singer, chef, comedian or athlete. He’s a YouTube star angling to be the Oprah Winfrey for millennials.

In its 10-years of existence, YouTube has evolved from a playground for kitty videos to a $20 billion visual menagerie.

Along the way, it’s also become an incubator for a new type of celebrity — a digital Brat Pack that’s leveraging smartphone stardom to write books, drop albums, design products and break into Hollywood.

“It’s the most powerful marketing platform in the world for millennials,” said Graham. “If you’re trying to reach that audience of girls gathered downstairs, YouTube is the venue to do that. Look at an artist like Fred (Lucas Cruikshank).

He went off to Hollywood, created some films, neglected his channel, came back to YouTube and ... crickets. No one was there anymore. You can’t abandon it.”

In recent years, YouTube, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month, has propped up YouTubers like Franta — “creators,” the site calls them

The creators’ importance to YouTube is evidenced by the Google-backed site bankrolling marketing campaigns the past two years featuring such famous (on the Internet) faces as Bethany Mota, Hannah Hart and Grace Helbig. While such creators vlog about very different topics, they usually share a similar aesthetic: improvised delivery, quirky editing and personalities that jump off screens.

Google has opened production facilities in London, Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo and Sao Paulo for creators who have more than 5,000 subscribers to film videos. The studios are equipped with sets and equipment that transcend most YouTubers’ living rooms and webcams. The spaces also serve as social hubs for creators. Several of them will host 10th anniversary parties on Wednesday.

“For us, creators are the lightbulb of

the ecosystem,” said Kevin Allocca, YouTube’s head of culture and trends. “Sure, YouTube was originally known for viral videos, and that was great and still is, but if you want to be able to build a business, you need to be able to create a following.

I think it’s a very different model than traditional media. It’s about maximizing the connection with an audience.”

That’s not so different from the genesis of YouTube, which entered its beta phase in May 2005. The first-ever video posted on the site was a crude 19-second clip titled “Me at the Zoo” that featured YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim speaking directly to the camera about the “cool” elephants at the San Diego Zoo. It’s been a decade, and while video lengths are longer and resolutions are higher, the sentiment is the same: watch me. (ap)

He began posting videos in 2010 while still attending high school in La Crescent, Minnesota. Now, he’s releasing music compilations and a line of locally grown coffee.

For every Justin Bieber or Psy, perhaps YouTube’s biggest success stories, there are dozens of Frantas. It’s a form of celebrity that didn’t exist 10 years ago, when YouTube was born and made it simple to post video online. Franta, who continues to upload videos despite his other endeavors, is young enough to have been inspired by the YouTube vloggers that came before him.

“There are guys like Shane Dawson and Phillip DeFranco who I was a fan of, and now we’re friends,” said Franta, sequestered from fans behind racks of his book, “A Work in Progress,” in the Barnes & Noble stockroom. “Do you know how awkward it would be to tell some of my friends that I watched them on YouTube in my bedroom before I knew them? It’s weird to think of it like that.”

Denpasar Junction project terminated

DENPASAR - Denpasar Municipality stopped the renovation project of the Denpasar Junction on Jalan Teuku Umar, Monday (May 25). The termination is carried out because the project is worked on without having a building permit (IMB).

The Head of the Denpasar Integrated Licensing and Investment Office (BBPTSP and PM), A.A. Gde Rai Soryawan, accompanied by the Division Head of Controlling and Planning of the DTRP, Dewa Wesnawa Wedagama, revealed that the building renovation of the Denpasar Junction has actually been consulted. However, the building permit has not been issued yet so that the renovation works by PT Eka Jaya Agung may not be done.

According to him, in 2007 the Denpasar Junction had the permit of shop, office and multipurpose building. But in 2011 the permit was renewed, and its category belonged to shopping center or supermarket. Currently, there is no conversion of building, but it merely carries out a renovation.It will remain to be used as a shopping center, office and public entertainment facility. “So, it now just needs to submit the building permit related to the changes in building construction,” he said.

In the meantime, the Director of PT Eka Jaya Agung, Joniari Panca H, said that his party has submitted the licensing document where it currently remains under process. He also promised to complete the construction permit including complying with all the rules of construction in the city of Denpasar. “I look forward to completing the permit process of this development and please be apologized because the development process has preceded before the building permit is issued,” he said while adding that the building renovation include the entrances and exits as well as the entrances to the upper parking lot. AMLAPURA - Two climbers of Mount Agung, Karangasem, were already evacuated on Monday morning (May 25) after they were reported to get lost because they were desperate to climb by making a new path from Tulamben village, Kubu subdistrict, Karangasem. Both foreign climbers from Czech were foundby the SAR team in weak condition due to starvation. Since the climbing made on Saturday (May 23), both have run out of food.

Coordinator of the Karangasem SAR Station, Ida Bagus Surya Wirawan, when contacted on Monday said that the evacuation lasted for eight hours from eight o’clock at night until three o’clock in the morning. It involved five personnel of the national SAR team, two personnel of Karangasem Disaster Mitigation Agency or BPBD, three local guides and three trackers. The victim was just found around 00:10 a.m. in the area of Galina hamlet, Jungutan village, Bebandem, due to the sign of bonfire made both climbers. The two foreign climbers were identified as Mike Karna, 39, and Monika Zawis Towska, 31. Both are known not to be husband and wife, but just friends because both have the same hobby of climbing mountain. “Having been successfully evacuated, we immediately

give them bread because they are in weak condition,” said Ida Bagus Surya Wirawan.

Other than growing rice and crops, local farmers at Subak Anggabaya also grows soybean and flowers, while at Subak Sembung farmers grow vegetables. At

both locations, the infrastructures are quite good although they still should be improved further to support the agrotourism. “At Anggabaya, for instance, there has been a kind of jogging track. But the region still needs further arrangement,” he said.

Governor wants government to fund the Buleleng airport

DENPASAR - If the government insists on allowing the Benoa Bay reclamation plan to be carried out by the investors, it the plan to build an airport in Buleleng will be adversely affected.

Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika apparently wants the airport to be financed by the central government. The governor said that he has even met the Minister of Transportation and Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) to immediately get certainty on the matter.

“The plan will be thus carried out because technical matters are determined by Minister of Transportation, while the financing is determined by the Minister of State-Owned Enterprise,” he told the media in Denpasar, on Monday

(May 25). Pastika hopes that the central government can finance the construction of the airport in Buleleng based on the fact that Bali generates huge foreign exchange for the country.

Meanwhile the daily parking needs of Sanglah Hospital must accommodate 6, 400 people:

800-1,000 policlinic visits, 200 visits to the emergency room, 300 visits to the Amerta Wing, 700 treated patients, pluswatchmen for patients (700), 2,800 employees of Sanglah Hospital, 400 residents, 300 co-assistants, 200 students such as midwives, nurses, etc.

Thus clearly the present parking facilities are inadequate, especially when we add random students form the nearby campus who sometimes looking for a place to park on hospital grounds.

If the land capacity is calculated based on economic value, according to Lanang, building a new parking lot is not feasible. “In other words, if it were to simply be a vertical expansion of the present parking, the investor would lose money and no one would wants to bid” he said. Therefor they have instead designed multi storey parking lots for a few locations, with the levy adjusted to current capacity and in consideration of the fact that the parking lot will belong to the hospital and other social needs. The price of parking ticket is limited by Regional Bylaw at IDR 1,000 for motorcycles and IDR 2,000 for cars.

The overloaded of available parking lot is not only caused by booming visits,but also by the arrangement of the space itself as well as un-staggered visiting hours. If the new parking lot is not ready in time, coopertion with PD Parkir Denpasar will be extended. (kmb42)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LOS ANGELES — Legendary “Lawrence of Arabia” actor Omar Sharif is battling Alzheimer’s disease, his agent Steve Kenis confirmed to The Associated Press on Monday.

No additional details were provided about the 83-year-old or his care. His son, Tarek Sharif, revealed the diagnosis in an interview with Spanish newspaper El Mundo on May 23.

The Egyptian-born Sharif rose to international stardom with his role in the 1962 epic “Lawrence of Arabia”—

Sharif’s first English-language film.

He earned an Oscar nomination for his turn as Sherif Ali in David Lean’s iconic film opposite Peter O’Toole.

Sharif followed the breakthrough performance with the title role in Lean’s “Doctor Zhivago,” co-starring Julie Christie. He then played Fanny Brice’s husband, Nicky Arnstein, in “Funny Girl” alongside Barbra Streisand.

NEW YORK — Faith No More bassist Bill Gould likes to think of the band’s new record as an aging actress. “Sure, her body’s getting a little older, but she’s not afraid to show it; she’s still sexy,” he said during a recent interview in New York City, where the band played two sold-out shows in support of “Sol Invictus,” its first in 18 years released last week.

“When you’re younger and you’re insecure, in a way you don’t have the mojo, the juice, you know,” he said.

The 52-year-old Gould and the rest of his bandmates — keyboardist Roddy Bottum, drummer Mike Bordin, guitarist Jon Hudson and singer Mike Patton — disbanded in 1998 and spent some time apart before regrouping in 2009 to play reunion shows.

That hiatus, together with the musical legacy they built during the late 1980s and 1990s with albums like “The Real Thing,” ‘’Angel Dust,” and “Album of the Year,” has given them the confidence and perspective to re-launch their collaboration on their own terms.

They briefly considered returning to a major label, but ultimately decided to forgo external deadlines and pressures and instead handle everything themselves.

“Sol Invictus” was engineered and recorded by Gould in his studio space in Oakland in 2014 and 2015, and is being released on Reclamation Recordings, a subsidiary of Patton’s own Ipecac Recordings label.

“We’ve all kind of grown into parts where we can actually contribute now in our own capacity,” Gould said. “We all kind of got good at what we did in different ways and it all kind of helps the whole.”

For a band that once briefly flirted with the mainstream following the success of the catchy, rap-meets-metal mega-hit “Epic,” having the freedom to dictate whether they put out a record, tour or make an appearance at this point in their lives is a top priority.

“An old man only looks to the next day,” the 47-year-old Patton said. “We’re old men.

“So what you do is, you look to the next day or the next plan, and, honestly, we don’t have a plan after this tour or this record.” (ap)

For this reason it is in the interest of businesses, government and society at large to release children from labour. Children never deserve to be forced to work.

Currently not all children in Indonesia have their rights and needs as children met. The need to play, attend school and other special needs are still not given to all children, especially those from poor or very poor families who are often forced to enter the workforce to help their families make ends meet.

Forcing children to work is detrimental to their growth. Therefor it is the obligation of the government to prohibit children from working

so that they can grow physically, mentally and socially. The Ministry of Labor’S Child-Free Labor initiative is expected to help the nation’s next generation thrive.

Given the fact that many schoolaged children are working, it is easy to imagine what the future of Indonesia will look like, of this is allow to continue. Those involved in the business sector as well as society on general must pay special attention to ensuring that the next generation will be equipped to comet with

other con tries, by allowing children to live out their childhood in a healthy environment.

The Minister of Manpower and Transmigration, Muhammad Hanif Dhakiri, said in Gianyar on Monday (May 25) that the problem of child labor is a complex one that crosses over into many sectors. Dhakiri insists that all parties must be onboard and that that the industrial sector must eliminate children from their domain. “Children of school age cannot be expected to meet the needs of the republic, especially of they have entered the work force which causes a great setback to the nation” he said.

Indonesia’s economic future requires investments that prioritize

human resources not natural resources. People who are still focused on exploiting natural resources have the same mindset as colonial invaders.

“If we base the building of Indonesia’s economy on natural resources, then we are no different than colonizers. As a nation, we must continue to improve the quality of our human resources so that they are superior to those of other countries, in terms of their competence, skills, and competitiveness,” said Muhammad Hanif Dhakiri, on Monday (May 25).

As part of the human resources investment program, the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration is withdrawing children from the

workplace and helping the, to go back to school, both for the sake of the children and for the sake of the future of the nation. Currently there are 121 million people in Indonesia’s labor force. Of this number, 7.4 million are unemployed high school graduates, and 1.7 million children are not attending school.
