Jolie surprises CinemaCon to tout ‘Unbroken’ Associated Press Writer

LAS VEGAS — Angelina Jolie took to the stage at CinemaCon, the annual convention of theater exhibitors, on Tuesday to reveal footage from the upcoming survival saga “Unbroken,” which she directed and produced.

“I wanted to make this film because its message is one that we all need now more than ever,” said Jolie in front of the crowd of theater owners at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Shot in Sydney last year, the film tells the true story of Lou Zamperini, a World War II hero and track star who ran in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Zamperini, who is played by Jack O’Connell, spent a harrowing 47 days afloat in the Pacific Ocean following the 1943 crash of his U.S. military plane. up behind Japanese lines. Developed originally by Universal Pictures in 1957, the biopic was supposed to star Tony Curtis, said Universal chairwoman Donna Langley before introducing Jolie. But after many false starts, the project never took shape.

It wasn’t until Zamperini’s story caught the attention of Jolie, that the film really began to evolve.

“She fought for it and earned the right to direct it,” said Langley, who called Jolie “a true filmmaker.”

“Unbroken,” to be released in December, is based on Laura Hillenbrand’s book “Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption,” which chronicles Zamperini’s life.

“Lou Zamperini is the toughest man I have ever met,” said Jolie. “He’s a fighter and true hero. He is also a man of faith, full of love and humility. He sounds perfect. But he wasn’t always.

Smoking, stealing and drinking by the time he was 9, he was convinced he was worth nothing and full of darkness.”

The footage teased revealed affecting scenes of Zamperini’s struggles, from his efforts to escape from his military plane after it crashed into the ocean, to the beatings her underwent as a prisoner.

LAS VEGAS — Universal Pictures had a strong start at the box office this year, with “Lone Survivor” grossing more than $124 million and “Ride Along” bringing in nearly $146 million globally. The run could continue for the studio that previewed its upcoming slate of films on Tuesday at the annual movie theater convention CinemaCon. “A healthy slate is a diverse one,” said Donna Langley, chairman of Universal.

“Hits don’t come just in summer and Christmas,” added Nikki Rocco, president of distribution at Universal. “We should use the full calendar to create opportunities for films to find an audience and create a habit of movie-going that isn’t seasonal, but year-round.”

Here’s a look at three of the studio’s most promising films, from a racy love story to the return of a few beloved ensemble casts: — “Fifty Shades of Grey,” directed

by Sam Taylor-Johnson and starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. The first look at the trailer for the spicy romance based on E.L. James’ best-seller revealed a tale that appears far sweeter than it is steamy. The suave Christian Grey (Dornan) sweeps the ordinarylooking Anastasia Steele (Johnson) off her feet with a joyride in his helicopter, a visit to his swanky Seattle apartment, and a fancy make-over. Anastasia properly transforms from plain Jane to sexy sophisticate. “Why are you trying to change me?” she asks her new lover.

“I’m not,” he replies. “It’s you who is changing me.” But it’s not all sentimental. The camera pans over Christian’s collection of S&M toys as Beyonce’s sleek and sexy “Haunted” plays in the

background. The film is set for release on Valentine’s Day of 2015.

— “Fast & Furious 7,” directed James Wan and starring Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez and Tyrese Gibson. We may not have a hard and fast answer for how the studio will finish the film since Walker died before production concluded, but those scenes he was able

to shoot definitely find their way into the seventh installment of the franchise. In the trailer, Walker, along with his crew of fierce drivers, stun viewers with a stunt involving driving cars out of a helicopter and safely landing with the help of parachutes. Flashy fight scenes and plenty of bare skin are once again on display. The seventh installment is scheduled to hit theaters on April 10, 2015.

— “Dumb and Dumber To,” directed

by Bobby and Peter Farrelly and starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. The anticipated sequel finds Harry (Daniels) visiting Lloyd (Carrey) in a home where he’s been faking helpless for 20 years as a gag.

Ngurah Rai Airport to close on Nyepi Day Bali Post

DENPASAR - To support the smoothness and security of the implementation of Nyepi in the Caka New Year 1936 in Bali, the PT Angkasa Pura I as the operator of the Ngurah Rai International Airport sent A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) to airports around the world. This notice is also delivered to the airline companies making cooperation with the Air Navigation.

Co-General Manager of the Ngurah Rai International Airport, I Gusti Ngurah Ardita, said that as on the Nyepi in the previous years, the Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport would undergo a closure for 24 hours. It commenced on March 31, 2014 at 06:00 a.m. until April 1, 2014 at 06:00 a.m.

“With this Notam the airline can arrange far in advance not to schedule flight to Bali during the closure period,” said Ngurah Ardita.

According to him, though the airport would be closed for 24- hours, the personnel associated with flight would remain on duty. This effort was to anticipate the request of technical landing or emergency landing, including medical evacuation. “Although we are not in

operation, we will remain to alert our personnel for anticipation,” he said.

He said that during the airport closure, a total of 400 scheduled flights were estimated to be nullified consisting of 248 domestic flights dan152 international flights. However, the closure of the airports during the Nyepi Day had been going on since the year 2000.

“Some things are still coordinated and prepared to ensure that the entire implementation of Nyepi at the airport can run smoothly and securely. The airport will be re-opened and operated normally on April 1, 2014 at 06:01 a.m.,” he said.

Owners reluctant to submit permit Bali Post

BULELENG - Allegation on illegal villas in Buleleng County seems closer to reality.

As proof, from the data collected in the Buleleng Office of Integrated Services (KPT) the permit already issued was only about a hundred villas. In reality, there are many illegal villa whose owners are reluctant to submit the permits to KPT. Interestingly, the owners are reluctant to submit the permits because they have paid many fees collected by certain parties around the villa location.

The Head of the Buleleng Office of Integrated Services (KPT), Putu Karuna, said in his office on Tuesday (Mar 25) that in terms of the task and function, the KPT was not entitled to collect data on the operating villas in Buleleng. The KPT only processed the permit requested by the owner. The permit of villa served by the KPT had been in accordance with the Rules of Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy No.86 HK.501/MKP/2010. Under the rules, it had been set forth that

villas or cottages should have a permit issued by the KPT Buleleng. “All the existing permits we have issued were requested by the owners. Even, most of them submitted their permits after completing the building.

Interestingly, some submitted their permits after the owners got reprimand from relevant agencies,” he said.

According to Karuna, from the information owned by the KPT Buleleng, many villa owners in Buleleng were reluctant to submit their permissions. He

pointed out, many villas or cottages in Gerokgak subdistrict and surrounding areas remained illegal. Despite knowing the information on the illegal villas, the KPT could not perform data collection. Data inventory should be carried out by technical agencies with the Buleleng Municipal Police.

“Based on information we received, there are many illegal villas, especially in Gerokgak and surrounding areas. Hopefully, this problem can be followed up by technical agencies and if the

request has been received we will process the permission,” he added.

On the other hand, Karuna said that compared to the number of villas operating in North Bali, only a few was willing to seek permission. Even, the villa owners tended to ignore the permit and prioritize the development first. Actually, pursuant to the rules, the owners were obliged to submit the permit before building.

Having been traced, in fact the villa owners were reluctant to submit their permit because they often paid fees levied by certain parties in the neighborhood around the villa location. The levies were ranging from voluntary contributions up to regular dues levied by certain parties in the location of the villa.

Since they had been collected many dues, most villa owners on behalf of local residents were reluctant to submit their permission to the KPT Buleleng.

“We do not blame on the villa owners only due to many dues levied by certain parties and there is more than one collection, so this makes them lazy to submit the permission to the KPT office. Hopefully, this can become a special record for technical agencies to overcome the problems,” he explained.

To be noted, the Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana, started to be furious with the presence of illegal villas operating in his region. Other than being illegal, based on his field inspection, it was found that many villa buildings owned foreigners violated the coastal and ravine borderline.

Responding to this condition, the regent immediately instructed the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency to perform data collection and the illegal villas should be disciplined.

However, so far the instruction had not been followed up by relevant technical agency. (mud)

STP BI held CHA Workshop.

Hotel General Managers (GM) took part in Certified Hotel Administrator (CHA) Workshop started on March 25 through 28, 2014.

Twelve GM from Bali, Western Sumatra, Bogor and Jakarta joined the workshop held in International Bali Tourism Institute (STP BI).

The workshop then will be continued with certification test carry out by lecturer from American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI).

Director of International Academic Affairs STP BI, I Gede Wiwin Suyasa, CHE said that the CHA is the international certification for GM. It is also the highest international certification in the hotel industry. “The program is for the GM who already has the position at least for three years,” he added.

He explained that in the workshop, there are materials; consist of Human Resource, Finance, Sales & Marketing, Food & Beverage, Room Division and Leadership.

“The goal of the workshop is self development so the participant can enroll individually or through their own company,” Wiwin said

The purpose of the certification is that the GM will be equal with international one as hotel administrator. The participants of CHA will receive academic acknowledgement from the hotel industry throughout the world.

Wiwin explained that STP BI became the host of the event because the institute has become global academic partner AHLEI since November 2013. “Now, all training program and academic of AHLEI can be done in Bali and not in US,” he added.

In addition of CHA, there will be Certified Hospitality Trainer (CHT) and Certified Hospitality Education (CHE) in May and also will be held in STP BI. “CHE is the highest certification for the lecturer in tourism education while this year, we also has the special program called certificate guess satisfactions gold for hotels,” Wiwin said.

In June through October, STP BI will held supervisor and head of department certification. “The rating of graduation of CHA in Indonesia is 75% in one test while CHE reach 80%,” Wiwin stated.(ocha)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

WHO: Pollution kills 7 million people every year LONDON — Air pollution kills about 7 million people worldwide every year, with more than half of the fatalities due to fumes from indoor stoves, according to a new report from the World Health Organization published Tuesday. The agency said air pollution is the cause of about one in eight deaths and has now become the single biggest environmental health risk. the total estimate from around 8 million to 7 million deaths in 2012.

The new estimates are more than double previous figures and based mostly on modeling. The increase is partly due to better information about the health effects of pollution and improved detection methods. Last year, WHO’s cancer agency classified air pollution as a carcinogen, linking dirty air to lung and bladder cancer.

WHO’s report noted women had higher levels of exposure than men in developing countries.

“Poor women and children pay a heavy price from indoor air pollution since they spend more time at home breathing in smoke and soot from leaky coal and wood cook stoves,” Flavia Bustreo, WHO Assistant Director-General for family, women and children’s health, said in a statement. Other experts said more research was needed to identify the deadliest components of pollution in order to target control measures more effectively.

WHO estimated that there were about 4.3 million deaths in 2012 caused by indoor air pollution, mostly people cooking inside using wood and coal stoves in Asia. WHO said there were about 3.7 million deaths from outdoor air pollution in 2012, of which nearly 90 percent were in developing countries.

But WHO noted that many people are exposed to both indoor and outdoor air pollution. Due to this overlap, mortality attributed to the two sources cannot simply added together, hence WHO said it lowered

WEST HOLLYWOOD, California — Before the car-wreck victim reached the emergency room, doctors, residents and nurses at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center knew what to expect by glancing at their smartphones. The details came in the staccato of text messages: A 35-year-old man had driven head-on into a bus. He suffered major chest injuries. His vital signs were crashing.

This was not just another day in the hospital. It was a laboratory billed as the “O.R. of the future,” an ongoing experiment aimed at breaking down barriers that bog down care through open communication, better use of technology and teamwork.

In reality, trauma care is rarely this organized. But those who are prized for individual skills are increasingly learning that when it comes to treating trauma patients from accidents, natural disasters or terrorist bombings, communication and coordination can determine whether someone lives or dies. At an office building less than a mile (1.6 kilometers) from the main Cedars-Sinai campus, doctors are experiment objects in simulations designed to test such skills.

There’s a “mission control” room filled with video screens where trainers keep track of the action. The walls are see-through. Open workspaces are favored over cubicles.

“Most Chinese tourists visiting Indonesia choose Bali as their favorite destination for a vacation,” I Gusti Ngurah Putra, secretary to the tourism and the creative economy ministry’s tourism marketing director general, said recently.

The number of Chinese tourist arrivals in Bali in January 2014 reached 52,060, a sharp increase of 80.52 percent from 28,839 in January 2013.

Last year, a total of 387,533 Chinese tourists visited Bali, up 24.65 percent from 310,904 in 2012.

In 2013, at least 76 million Chinese people traveled overseas as tourists. This year, the number is expected to increase to 100 million, he explained.

China’s economic growth, which has been improving rapidly, has encouraged its people to travel abroad.

On the west side of the island, almost 200 volunteers from Quiksilver (30), Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia (32), Hard Rock Hotel (10), Harris Hotel (10), Kuta Paradiso (10), Inna Grand Kuta Hotel (15), youth group Gerakan Fajar Nusantara (25), the Marantha Church of Denpasar (40), Padma Boys Boardriders (17), and Baliwaves.com (5) met at 7:00 am and collected an estimated 350 kgs of trash off the Kuta Beach strip starting from Segara Beach and ending at Padma Beach.

Over in Jimbaran at Kedonganan Beach over 100 volunteers made up of mostly local business owners, drink sellers and hawkers, the Coca-Cola crew and a local government cleaning team collected a massive pile of trash that included logs, tree branches and bamboo in addition to the usual plastic items, which weighed in at an estimated 800 kgs.

Positively for the local community, the amount of public coming to help clean the beach every second week is growing, but as always we are hoping that even more volunteers show up next time on the 9th of April.

GIANYAR - Rubbish problems emerge again in the matter of the difficulty of handling and increasing volume. Accompanied by Regional Secretary of Gianyar Ida Bagus Gaga Adi Saputra, the problems faced by villages would be studied in order the government could look for the solutions.

Apart from environmental issues such as litter, the regent also emphasized the discipline of civil servants and the security related to legislative election. “Enforcement of discipline should not only take place a little while, but should remain in place in order to be able to create a good organization,” he said.

Meanwhile, with regard to the implementation of legislative election, the whole headmen were expected to maintain the atmosphere of free, fair and safe election.

If the Municipal Police remained in the planning phase to discipline the overnight parking on the road side, the residents of Tegal Baleran hamlet, Dauh Peken village, had owned a solution. They utilized a vacant land in its territory to be used as a rented garage with a size of 2.5 meters x 5.5 meters totally consisting of 13 units.

The result was not bad where a garage was rented for IDR 1.1 million a year. “This garage was already established four years ago. The results are used to finance the village activities and the cost of ceremony,” said the former hamlet chief of Tegal Baleran, Gusti Ketut Sudiana.

The idea of making such a rented garage was based on the fact that many local residents parked their vehicle at road side around the hamlet area. He admitted with the existence of the rented garage the number of vehicles parked at road side reduced. “In addition to the safety factor, the condition of road is not like it used to be,” he explained.

He told that for the making of rented garage, the hamlet authority should lend money. “The initial capital was worth IDR 90 million, but it has now been paid off,” he said.

Even, his party planned to make additional garage on the remaining land, but still found difficulty in the matter of fund.

“Actually, we get a lot of demands. If there is possibility to get a loan, we will add to the garage again,” he explained. (kmb28)

LYON, France — Chinese President Xi Jinping was the toast of France as he embarked on a state visit — and what better time just days after China ended an anti-dumping, anti-subsidy investigation of French wine.

Deal-making and commemorations of a half-century of French diplomatic ties with Communist China were the order of business during Xi’s three-day visit, part of his European tour. French officials said the signing of dozens of commercial accords large and small — from nuclear energy to aerospace to agribusiness, even including a possible sausage deal — were being lined up.

Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan were traveling Wednesday to Paris, a day after arriving in the southwestern city of Lyon — a key French destination on the Silk Route centuries ago. They began the day visiting a medical research center and a decades-old FrancoChinese institute in the city. “My visit to France comes at a particular moment, and will allow for work with President Francois Hollande and other French leaders to take stock of 50 years of Sino-French relations, and plan

the future together,” Xi said at a reception following his arrival.

France wants its relations with China to flourish, not least because of a whopping 25.8 billioneuro ($35.6 billion) trade deficit with what is now the world’s second-largest economy. That shortfall represents roughly 40 percent of France’s total foreign trade deficit. French officials also want France to increase its market share in China from about 1.5 percent today — noting with no small amount of envy that Germany’s is about 5 percent.

But many French workers, already worrying about double-digit unemployment rates in France, are fretting about the impact on wages from doing more business with China.

China, already a world leader in manufacturing, is looking to scale up production of valueadded goods and services and tap into French savoir faire in hightech industries.

PERTH, Australia — The desperate, multinational hunt for Flight 370 resumed again Wednesday across a remote stretch of the Indian Ocean after fierce winds and high waves that had forced a daylong halt eased considerably. A total of 12 planes and two ships from the United States, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand were participating in the search, hoping to find even a single piece of the Malaysia Airlines jet that could offer tangible evidence of a crash.

Malaysia announced earlier this week that a mathematical analysis of the final known satellite signals from the plane had proved beyond doubt it gone down in the sea, taking the lives of all 239 people on board. The new data vastly shrunk search zone, but it remains huge — an area estimated at 1.6 million square kilometers (622,000 square miles), about the size of Alaska.

“We’re throwing everything we have at this search,” Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott told Nine network television on Wednesday. “This is about the most inaccessible spot imaginable.

anywhere,” he later told Seven Network television. He vowed that “we will do what we can to solve this riddle.”

In Beijing, some families held out a glimmer of hope their loved ones might somehow have survived.

About two-thirds of the missing are Chinese, and their relatives have lashed out at Malaysia for essentially declaring their family members dead without any physical evidence of the plane’s remains. Many also believe that the Malaysian officials have not been transparent or swift in communicating information with them about the status of the search.

In China’s capital a day earlier, nearly 100 relatives and their supporters marched to the Malaysian Embassy, where they threw plastic water bottles, tried to rush the gate and shouted, “Tell the truth! Return our relatives!”

NEW YORK — Facebook is buying virtual reality company Oculus, betting $2 billion that its technology will become a new way for people to communicate, learn or be entertained.

“This is a long-term bet on the future of computing,” said Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg Tuesday on a call with analysts. “I believe Oculus can be one of the platforms of the future.”

Irvine, California-based Oculus VR Inc. makes the Oculus Rift, a virtual reality headset that’s received a lot of attention from video game developers, though it has yet to be released for consumers. The headsets cover a user’s eyes and create an immersive world that reacts to turning one’s head or moving back and forth.

Beyond games, Zuckerberg said virtual reality headsets might someday be used to enjoy a courtside seat at a basketball game, study in a classroom, consult with a doctor face-toface or shop in a virtual store.

The technology also has social applications, he said.

“Imagine sharing not just moments with friends online but entire experiences and adventures,” he said.

It is Facebook’s second big acquisition in as many months.

Last month the social network announced that it would pay $19 billion for deal messaging startup WhatsApp, a deal that hasn’t closed.

“I don’t think you should expect us to make multiple multibillion-dollar acquisitions within a couple months frequently,” Zuckerberg said.

But he called Oculus a “unique” company with a major lead on rivals in technology, engineering talent and developer interest.

at a game-developers conference in San Francisco last week.

Zuckerberg said virtual reality technology is a computing platform unto itself, comparing it to personal computers, which revolutionized the world in the 1970s and 1980s, and mobile phones.

Facebook Inc. said Tuesday that the deal includes $400 million in cash and 23.1 million shares worth about $1.6 billion. Oculus employees are also eligible for an additional $300 million if the company achieves certain targets.

Facebook Chief Financial Officer David Ebersman said Oculus was valued based on the expected returns from the video game industry alone, with a higher return expected if it can expand into communications,

entertainment or other fields.

Zuckerberg said Facebook intends to let Oculus continue with its roadmap of development but help out with recruiting, marketing, infrastructure and opening doors to new partnerships. He said he intends not to make a profit on hardware but instead make the product affordable and ubiquitous so Facebook can look at generating revenue from services, software, advertising, virtual goods or other areas.

Facebook says Oculus has received more than 75,000 preorders for second-generation development kits for the headset at $350 apiece. The kits are to ship in July.

Sales of Oculus’ development kits alone are 10 times bigger than all other headsets in the history of virtual reality, said Antonio Rodriguez, general partner of venture capital fund Matrix Partners, an early investor that put $18.5 million in Oculus starting last year.

SEOUL — Asian stocks gained on Wednesday as investors anticipated further stimulus measures from Europe and China while U.S. economic data reinforced recovery hopes in the world’s largest economy.

Japan’s Nikkei 225, the regional heavyweight index added 0.4 percent to 14,477.16. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index gained 0.9 percent to 21,919.79 and South Korea’s Kospi rose 1.2 percent to 1,964.31. Australia’s S&P ASX/200 added 0.8 percent to 5,376.80.

Stocks in Southeast Asia also advanced. But China’s Shanghai Composite was shed 0.2 percent to 2,062.87.

Investors welcomed European Central Bank President Mario Draghi’s speech on Tuesday in Paris that monetary policy should support the economies of countries that use the euro.

“This is a clear sign that the ECB will continue to hold its finger over the rates button,” IG strategist Evan Lucas said in a market commentary.

“The bank is looking to find a way to chase out funds locked up in wealth products that will then be redirected to areas of the economy that are looking for growth funding.”

More investors are banking that China’s leaders will introduce progrowth measures to prop up a slowing economy. A preliminary reading of China’s manufacturing, released Monday, showed activity at an 8- month low in March.

Reports showing strength in the U.S. economy also underpinned investor sentiment. The Conference Board in the U.S. said its measure of consumer confidence rose last month to its highest since January 2008. Another release showed U.S. home prices edged down in January for a third month, but at a high level compared with a year earlier.

On Wall Street, the S&P 500 rose 0.4 percent to 1,865.62. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 0.6 percent to 16,367.88 while the Nasdaq composite edged up 0.2 percent to 4,234.27.

In energy markets, benchmark U.S. oil for May delivery was up 20 cents at $99.39 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The contract fell 41 cents to settle at $99.19 on Tuesday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3811 from $1.3823 late Tuesday.

The dollar gained to 102.31 yen from 102.26 yen.

DENPASAR - Facing the upcoming legislative election, Bank Indonesia appealed to the public to be more careful in making cash transaction by paying attention to the features of rupiah banknote authenticity. Especially, the political events become vulnerable arena for the circulation of fake banknotes.

Deputy of Bank Indonesia Representative for Region III Bali-Nusra, Ananda Pulungan, said that his institution made cooperation with Bali Police for dissemination on the rupiah banknote authenticity features (CIKUR) to suppress the circulation of fake banknotes. Circulation of fake banknotes was expected to continuously decline in harmony with the increasing capability of the community to detect fake banknotes.

“From January to March 2014, we have organized a coordination meeting on the eradication of fake banknotes with Bali Police and banking as well as socialization on the banknote authenticity identification to tellers, retailer cashiers, Cash in Transit (CIT) officers as well as wider community in Kreneng traditional market,” said Ananda in Denpasar.

He said that before the religious festivity of Nyepi Day falling on Monday, March 31, 2014 as well as preparation of the legislative election in April 2014, there had been no indication of significant improvement of activities in the cash and non-cash payment system. After the jury panel made the assessment in each subdistrict, the complaints began to emerge. The jury making the valuation was considered unfair, so it resulted in disappointment on the competition participants.

One of them was the customary youth club of Tainsiat hamlet.

Protest of the youth was expressed through the making of large billboard posted at the four-way intersection in front of the Tainsiat hamlet hall. In essence, they protested the results of assessment conducted by the jury panel of the ogoh-ogoh nominated. On a black billboard, they mentioned the jury’s decision was inconsistent and not objective. In addition to billboards, the Yowana Saka Bhuwana youth club also put a wreath containing the condolence over the defeat of the work of art prepared by the youth of Tainsiat hamlet.

Chairman of the Tainsiat youth club, Gung De, when contacted on Tuesday (Mar 25) said that his party was disappointed with the jury’s decision in the ogoh-ogoh competition of this year. After seeing the results of the assessment by

the jury panel, many ogoh-ogoh figures nominated were considered inappropriate in terms of aesthetics, finishing as well as harmony of the bodily anatomy. Not only that, a lot of ogoh-ogoh figures did not comply with the theme, but got the nomination. “The assessment of jury was not fair,” he said.

Protests against the ogoh-ogoh competition actually did not only occur at this time.

In the implementation of the ogoh-ogoh competition in 2010, a similar case also occurred. The theme of bhuta kala (evil spirits) did not only take the shape of ogres. CALAMBA, Philippines — The aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines has added urgency to finding a solution to a longstanding problem: less than 10 percent of farmers have crop insurance, and while its advantages are widely understood, few can afford it.

Raymundo dela Vina, an 81-year-old farmer in Laguna province near Manila, likened raising crops to betting in a lottery: you go against so many odds including pests and an average of 20 typhoons that pummel the country each year, flooding small rice paddies like his. The country’s 10.8 million farmers are the second poorest industry after fishermen. Many are tenant tillers who share their harvest with land owners and go into debt to pay for seeds, fertilizer and pest control. Crop insurance is the least of priorities when there is often not even enough money for food. But the government wants to change that.

Officials and international aid groups are discussing ways to boost resilience to disasters after Haiyan, one of the strongest typhoons on record, killed more than 6,200 people and flattened towns in the central Philippines on Nov. 8. Better protections are vital for the poor who often end up deeper in poverty with every calamity.

A World Bank report estimated that natural calamities cut 0.8 percentage point from the country’s economic growth rate each year on average. The proportion of people living in poverty in 2013 may have risen to 26.4 percent from 25.2 percent the previous year despite economic growth of more than 7 percent, according to a government report.

ARLINGTON, Washington — With search and cadaver dogs leading the way, rescuers using small bulldozers and their bare hands pushed through sludge strewn with splintered homes and twisted cars to find 10 more bodies in the debris of a Washington state mudslide, authorities said. Despite the grim discoveries as the search entered its fifth day Wednesday — and the likelihood that more bodies will be found — officials were still hoping to find survivors.

“We haven’t lost hope that there’s a possibility that we can find somebody alive in some pocket area,” said Travis Hots, a fire chief in Snohomish County.

Two bodies were recovered Tuesday, while eight were located in the debris field from Saturday’s slide 55 miles (88 kilometers) northeast of Seattle, Hots said.

That brings the likely death toll to 24, though authorities are keeping the official toll at 16 until the eight other bodies are recovered. With scores still missing, authorities are working off a list of 176 people unaccounted for, though some names were believed to be duplicates.

Hundreds of rescuers and heavy equipment operators slogged through the muck and rain, fol-

lowing the search dogs over the unstable surface. “Going on the last three days the most effective tool has been dogs and just our bare hands and shovels uncovering people,” Hots said.

As the increasingly desperate search progressed, reports surfaced that warned of the potential for dangerous landslides in the community. A 2010 report commissioned by Snohomish County to comply with a federal law warned that neighborhoods along the Stillaguamish River were among the highest-risk areas, The Seattle Times reported.

The hillside that collapsed Saturday outside of the community of Oso was one highlighted as particularly dangerous, said the report by California-based

engineering and architecture firm Tetra Tech. “For someone to say that this plan did not warn that this was a risk is a falsity,” said report author and Tetra Tech program manager Rob Flaner.

A 1999 report by geomorphologist Daniel Miller raised questions about why residents were allowed to build homes in the area and whether officials had taken proper precautions.

“I knew it would fail catastrophically in a large-magnitude event,” though not when it would happen, said Miller, who was hired by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to do the study. A year later, the U.S. Army Corps of engineers warned in another study that lives would be at risk if the hillside collapsed, The Daily Herald of Everett reported.

JAKARTA - Within the next 13 days, Indonesian people will cast their votes in the legislative elections, but those with visual impairment have considered the upcoming elections discriminative towards them.

The visually impaired are disappointed because the General Elections Commission (KPU) does not provide braille templates to be placed over ballot papers for the elections of House of Representatives (DPR) and Provincial Legislative Council (DPRD) members this year.

The braille templates will only be available for the presidential and Regional Representative Council (DPD) elections.

KPU commissioner Arief Budiman previously stated that it was not possible for the commission to provide braille templates for the DPR and DPRD member elections.

He attributed this deficiency to technical reasons as the font size on the ballots for the DPR and DPRD elections were too small for braille, as reported by the Jakarta Post.

Election Committee for the Disabled (PPUA Penca) chairwoman Ariani Soekanwo, meanwhile, pointed out that another difficulty for the KPU in providing braille templates for the DPR and DPRD elections was the number of electoral districts and legislative candidates.

“The template for the presidential election is only one model.

There is a DPD for each of the 33 provinces; therefore there need to be 33 kinds of templates. But if we’re talking about the DPR, there are just too many electoral districts.

There wouldn’t be enough time (to produce all the templates),” she told The Jakarta Post recently.

To ensure that disabled people are able to exercise their voting rights freely without concerns about their votes being manipulated, the KPU requires each disabled person to assign their own assistants who will accompany them to the polling booths in the DPR and DPRD elections.

Indonesia’s Forum of People with Visual Impairment has decided to challenge the KPU for not providing the braille template.

The forum consists of a number of blind people’s association such as the Indonesian Blind Association, the Association of Wyata Guna’s Alumni, the Association of the

Indonesian Blind Muslims, and the Association of Indonesian Blind Athletes.

The forum’s chairman, Suhendar, in Bandung, West Java, on Tuesday (March 25) observed that political parties had failed to accommodate the needs of the visually impaired in the legislative elections this year.

Indonesia is going to hold parliamentary elections on April 9, which will have participation from 12 national political parties and three Aceh local parties, and the presidential election on July 9.

It is estimated that the number of visually impaired people in Indonesia is around 3.5 million, 1.7 million of which are eligible voters.

“The provision of braille templates during the elections 2014 is a must,” he noted.

Therefore, the forum plans to file a lawsuit against KPU over the absence of braille templates for blind voters in the legislative elections 2014.

“We will fight the injustice that the KPU has done against blind voters. We will file a lawsuit against the KPU’s decision of not providing braille templates for us,” Suhendar retorted. The lawsuit will be filed in the Constitution Court or the State Administrative Court (PTUN).

A decision to provide escorts for blind voters at polling stations is a denial of their right to vote in privacy, secrecy and directly, he explained. It also violates the principles of independence and equality for people with disabilities, he highlighted.

According to him, there is an indication that certain parties want to direct blind voters when casting the ballots, by providing someone to accompany them.

“We reject the elections, both the implementation and the results,” Suhendar stressed, expressing his regret that the KPU has been insensitive and does not care for people with disabilities.

By not providing braille templates for blind voters, the Commission has deprived the blind voters of their political rights. The absence of braille templates will be against the principle of secret ballot for voters, including the blind ones, he pointed out.

Suhendar explained that Braille templates were provided in the general elections in 2004 and 2009, but surprisingly the election executors this year have failed to provide the templates in the legislative elections.

Harry Kewell announces retirement from football Associated Press Writer

MELBOURNE, Australia — Former Leeds United and Liverpool midfielder Harry Kewell says he will retire from football at the end of the A-League season, giving up his goal of appearing at a third World Cup. Kewell, 35, on Wednesday said he will play his last professional match on April 12 when he captains the Melbourne Heart against Western Sydney Wanderers.

Kewell became the youngest player to appear for Australia when

he made his debut against Chile in 1996 aged 17 years, 7 months. Playing mostly as an attacking midfielder, scored 17 goals in 56 internationals, appearing at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.

Kewell scored 45 goals in 181 matches for Leeds and 12 in 98 appearances for Liverpool. He went on to play 63 games for the Turkish club Galatasaray, scoring 22 goals.

He accepted he was likely not being considered for the World Cup by Australia coach Ange Postecoglou and a recent rib injury snuffed out

even the faintest hope he might be selected.

“For the World Cup I can sit back and enjoy it,” Kewell said. “There’s obviously going to be questions asked about the World Cup, but I haven’t been part of the Australian squad for a while. “For me it was time to step aside and let young players stand up.”

BERLIN — Bayern Munich set a new milestone in its dominance of German football on Tuesday, beating Hertha Berlin 3-1 to wrap up the quickest Bundesliga title in 51 years of the league. Goals from Toni Kroos, Mario Goetze and Franck Ribery sealed the unbeaten defending champions’ 24th German title with seven games to spare, bettering the mark set in last year’s record-breaking campaign by one game.

Adrian Ramos pulled one back from the penalty spot for Hertha, but there was to be no denying Pep Guardiola his first Bundesliga title in his first season as coach. “We worked very hard for this title. When you win by 25 points people can think it’s easy. But it’s not easy, especially after the last season with three titles,” the Spaniard said. “When you win 19 games one after the other, it speaks for the mentality of the team.”

Bayern’s 19th consecutive win, its 10th consecutive victory away from home, and its unbeaten run of 52 games are all Bundesliga records.

Bayern finished 25 points ahead of Borussia Dortmund last season and is even more dominant this campaign.

“We can see you, but we still need a telescope,” Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said.

Of 27 games so far this season, Bayern has won 25 and drawn the other two. It has also scored more goals (79) and conceded fewer (13)

SAO PAULO — A sports tribunal has fined Brazilian club Mogi Mirim $21,000 because its fans racially abused an opposing player in a Sao Paulo state championship match this month. The tribunal issued the fine after fans allegedly called Santos midfielder Arouca a “monkey” while he was being interviewed after a March 6 match.

Fans also reportedly told the former Brazil midfielder to go and look for an African team to play for.

Mogi Mirim, whose president is former Brazil star Rivaldo, said it will appeal because it did everything possible to help authorities solve the case. Nobody was arrested, but the team’s stadium will remain closed pending the appeal.

The ruling late Monday came the same day South American football’s governing body fined Peruvian club Real Garcilaso $12,000 after its fans racially abused Brazilian Cruzeiro midfielder Tinga in a Copa Libertadores match earlier this year. CONMEBOL also warned that the club could face stiffer penalties if similar incidents occur, including forcing it to play in an empty home stadium. Tinga criticized the fine for the Peruvian club.

“If they opted for the financial option, it’s because they agreed something was wrong,” the 36-year-old Tinga told Brazilian media. “But they need to rethink these punishments, they need to be more creative and make it matter, maybe involving the club in a social cause related to what happened, or making it wear a jersey with words against violence.”

Harry Kewell announces retirement from football Associated Press Writer

MELBOURNE, Australia — Former Leeds United and Liverpool midfielder Harry Kewell says he will retire from football at the end of the A-League season, giving up his goal of appearing at a third World Cup. Kewell, 35, on Wednesday said he will play his last professional match on April 12 when he captains the Melbourne Heart against Western Sydney Wanderers.

Kewell became the youngest player to appear for Australia when

he made his debut against Chile in 1996 aged 17 years, 7 months. Playing mostly as an attacking midfielder, scored 17 goals in 56 internationals, appearing at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.

Kewell scored 45 goals in 181 matches for Leeds and 12 in 98 appearances for Liverpool. He went on to play 63 games for the Turkish club Galatasaray, scoring 22 goals.

He accepted he was likely not being considered for the World Cup by Australia coach Ange Postecoglou and a recent rib injury snuffed out

even the faintest hope he might be selected.

“For the World Cup I can sit back and enjoy it,” Kewell said. “There’s obviously going to be questions asked about the World Cup, but I haven’t been part of the Australian squad for a while. “For me it was time to step aside and let young players stand up.”

Former Australia and Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich said Kewell would be remembered as “one of Australia’s greatest players ever.” “He’s done the admirable thing by retiring now,” Bosnich said.

BERLIN — Bayern Munich set a new milestone in its dominance of German football on Tuesday, beating Hertha Berlin 3-1 to wrap up the quickest Bundesliga title in 51 years of the league. Goals from Toni Kroos, Mario Goetze and Franck Ribery sealed the unbeaten defending champions’ 24th German title with seven games to spare, bettering the mark set in last year’s record-breaking campaign by one game.

Adrian Ramos pulled one back from the penalty spot for Hertha, but there was to be no denying Pep Guardiola his first Bundesliga title in his first season as coach. “We worked very hard for this title. When you win by 25 points people can think it’s easy. But it’s not easy, especially after the last season with three titles,” the Spaniard said. “When you win 19 games one after the other, it speaks for the mentality of the team.”

Bayern’s 19th consecutive win, its 10th consecutive victory away from home, and its unbeaten run of 52 games are all Bundesliga records.

Bayern finished 25 points ahead of Borussia Dortmund last season and is even more dominant this campaign.

“We can see you, but we still need a telescope,” Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said.

Of 27 games so far this season, Bayern has won 25 and drawn the other two. It has also scored more goals (79) and conceded fewer (13)

than any other side by a large margin.

“It’s impressive,” Klopp said. “You have to take your hat off to the consistent performances they deliver on the pitch and the drive they have.”

Klopp’s side had to settle for a 0-0 draw in the Ruhr derby with Schalke despite dominating. Dortmund remained one point ahead of Schalke but slipped 25 behind Bayern, the first side to win the Bundesliga as early as March. “We’re all very surprised as we expected it in February,” Schalke general manager Horst Heldt joked. “But seriously, it was a magnificent season from Bayern.” Bayern’s celebrations were reserved by usual standards, perhaps an indicator of how predictable the title race had become.

Guardiola led Barcelona to 14 titles in four seasons in charge of the club where he played most of his career as a stylish defensive midfielder. But there was no guarantee he could replicate that success in Germany, a country he had only experienced as a visitor before.

Brazilian club fined $21,000 for fans’ racism Associated Press Writer

SAO PAULO — A sports tribunal has fined Brazilian club Mogi Mirim $21,000 because its fans racially abused an opposing player in a Sao Paulo state championship match this month. The tribunal issued the fine after fans allegedly called Santos midfielder Arouca a “monkey” while he was being interviewed after a March 6 match.

Fans also reportedly told the former Brazil midfielder to go and look for an African team to play for.

Mogi Mirim, whose president is former Brazil star Rivaldo, said it will appeal because it did everything possible to help authorities solve the case. Nobody was arrested, but the team’s stadium will remain closed pending the appeal.

The ruling late Monday came the same day South American football’s governing body fined Peruvian club Real Garcilaso $12,000 after its fans racially abused Brazilian Cruzeiro midfielder Tinga in a Copa Libertadores match earlier this year. CONMEBOL also warned that the club could face stiffer penalties if similar incidents occur, including forcing it to play in an empty home stadium. Tinga criticized the fine for the Peruvian club.

“If they opted for the financial option, it’s because they agreed something was wrong,” the 36-year-old Tinga told Brazilian media. “But they need to rethink these punishments, they need to be more creative and make it matter, maybe involving the club in a social cause related to what happened, or making it wear a jersey with words against violence.”

Substitute Alessandro Florenzi scored a stoppage-time winner to keep Roma’s faint title hopes alive as it beat Torino 2-1 at home in Serie A on Tuesday. KEY BISCAYNE, Florida — Even with his surgically repaired back still nowhere near perfect, defending champion Andy Murray needed only 73 minutes to beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 6-1 at the Sony Open on Tuesday and set up a quarterfinal with Novak Djokovic. “My game is getting there,” said Murray, the No. 6 seed, who acknowledged he was dealing with a sore back. “The last six sets I’ve played, very high-level tennis, very few errors.”

He’ll need to keep it that way against Djokovic, who eased past Tommy Robredo 6-3, 7-5. The second-seeded Djokovic even gave back a point in the second set. A groundstroke from Robredo clipped the baseline and Djokovic couldn’t handle it, but the ball was erroneously called out. After a review showed the ball was in, the point was ordered to be replayed.

CALAMBA, Philippines — The aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines has added urgency to finding a solution to a longstanding problem: less than 10 percent of farmers have crop insurance, and while its advantages are widely understood, few can afford it.

Raymundo dela Vina, an 81-year-old farmer in Laguna province near Manila, likened raising crops to betting in a lottery: you go against so many odds including pests and an average of 20 typhoons that pummel the country each year, flooding small rice paddies like his. The country’s 10.8 million farmers are the second poorest industry after fishermen. Many are tenant tillers who share their harvest with land owners and go into debt to pay for seeds, fertilizer and pest control. Crop insurance is the least of priorities when there is often not even enough money for food. But the government wants to change that.

Officials and international aid groups are discussing ways to boost resilience to disasters after Haiyan, one of the strongest typhoons on record, killed more than 6,200 people and flattened towns in the central Philippines on Nov. 8. Better protections are vital for the poor who often end up deeper in poverty with every calamity.

A World Bank report estimated that natural calamities cut 0.8 percentage point from the country’s economic growth rate each year on average. The proportion of people living in poverty in 2013 may have risen to 26.4 percent from 25.2 percent the previous year despite economic growth of more than 7 percent, according to a government report.

Government subsidized insurance that covers 30,000 pesos ($668) of a farmer’s production cost per hectare each cropping season is a big help, farmer dela Vina said.

Jovy Bernabe, president of government-owned insurer Philippine Crop Insurance Corp., said the program is being expanded this year, with free policies to be given to 800,000 farmers in the 20 poorest provinces plus six provinces directly hit by Haiyan. Last year, the agency enrolled for free 224,000 poor farmers who had become landowners under agrarian reform, raising the number insured to 750,000.

INDONESIA President hold meeting discussed Satinah, migrant workers Antara

JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono chaired a limited meeting to discuss Indonesian migrant workers in foreign countries, including Satinah, who is under the threat of getting beheaded in Saudi Arabia.

“We discussed about legal assistance to all Indonesian migrant workers abroad,” stated President Yudhoyono at his office, here on Wednesday.

The president stated that the government continues to give legal assistance to all problematic migrant workers in accordance with legal rules in the countries where

they work.

But concerning Satinah’s case, the head of state noted that the government has explained to Saudi Arabia through Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto.

The president pointed out that in the limited meeting, the compensation from Satinah to the victim¿s

family was also discussed.

Present at the meeting were, among others, Djoko Suyanto, Coordinating Minister for Economy Hatta Rajasa, National Police Chief Gen Sutarman, Home Affairs Minister Gamawan Fauzi, State Intelligence Agency Chief Marciano Norman, and Foreign Affairs Ministry officials.

ARLINGTON, Washington — With search and cadaver dogs leading the way, rescuers using small bulldozers and their bare hands pushed through sludge strewn with splintered homes and twisted cars to find 10 more bodies in the debris of a Washington state mudslide, authorities said. Despite the grim discoveries as the search entered its fifth day Wednesday — and the likelihood that more bodies will be found — officials were still hoping to find survivors.

“We haven’t lost hope that there’s a possibility that we can find somebody alive in some pocket area,” said Travis Hots, a fire chief in Snohomish County.

Two bodies were recovered Tuesday, while eight were located in the debris field from Saturday’s slide 55 miles (88 kilometers) northeast of Seattle, Hots said.

That brings the likely death toll to 24, though authorities are keeping the official toll at 16 until the eight other bodies are recovered. With scores still missing, authorities are working off a list of 176 people unaccounted for, though some names were believed to be duplicates.

Hundreds of rescuers and heavy equipment operators slogged through the muck and rain, fol-

lowing the search dogs over the unstable surface. “Going on the last three days the most effective tool has been dogs and just our bare hands and shovels uncovering people,” Hots said.

As the increasingly desperate search progressed, reports surfaced that warned of the potential for dangerous landslides in the community. A 2010 report commissioned by Snohomish County to comply with a federal law warned that neighborhoods along the Stillaguamish River were among the highest-risk areas, The Seattle Times reported.

The hillside that collapsed Saturday outside of the community of Oso was one highlighted as particularly dangerous, said the report by California-based

engineering and architecture firm Tetra Tech. “For someone to say that this plan did not warn that this was a risk is a falsity,” said report author and Tetra Tech program manager Rob Flaner.

A 1999 report by geomorphologist Daniel Miller raised questions about why residents were allowed to build homes in the area and whether officials had taken proper precautions.

“I knew it would fail catastrophically in a large-magnitude event,” though not when it would happen, said Miller, who was hired by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to do the study. A year later, the U.S. Army Corps of engineers warned in another study that lives would be at risk if the hillside collapsed, The Daily Herald of Everett reported.

JAKARTA - Within the next 13 days, Indonesian people will cast their votes in the legislative elections, but those with visual impairment have considered the upcoming elections discriminative towards them.

The visually impaired are disappointed because the General Elections Commission (KPU) does not provide braille templates to be placed over ballot papers for the elections of House of Representatives (DPR) and Provincial Legislative Council (DPRD) members this year.

The braille templates will only be available for the presidential and Regional Representative Council (DPD) elections.

KPU commissioner Arief Budiman previously stated that it was not possible for the commission to provide braille templates for the DPR and DPRD member elections.

He attributed this deficiency to technical reasons as the font size on the ballots for the DPR and DPRD elections were too small for braille, as reported by the Jakarta Post.

Election Committee for the Disabled (PPUA Penca) chairwoman Ariani Soekanwo, meanwhile, pointed out that another difficulty for the KPU in providing braille templates for the DPR and DPRD elections was the number of electoral districts and legislative candidates.

“The template for the presidential election is only one model.

There is a DPD for each of the 33 provinces; therefore there need to be 33 kinds of templates. But if we’re talking about the DPR, there are just too many electoral districts.

There wouldn’t be enough time (to produce all the templates),” she told The Jakarta Post recently.

To ensure that disabled people are able to exercise their voting rights freely without concerns about their votes being manipulated, the KPU requires each disabled person to assign their own assistants who will accompany them to the polling booths in the DPR and DPRD elections.

Indonesia’s Forum of People with Visual Impairment has decided to challenge the KPU for not providing the braille template.

The forum’s chairman, Suhendar, in Bandung, West Java, on Tuesday (March 25) observed that political parties had failed to accommodate the needs of the visually impaired in the legislative elections this year.

Indonesia is going to hold parliamentary elections on April 9, which will have participation from 12 national political parties and three Aceh local parties, and the presidential election on July 9.

It is estimated that the number of visually impaired people in Indonesia is around 3.5 million, 1.7 million of which are eligible voters.

“The provision of braille templates during the elections 2014 is a must,” he noted.

Therefore, the forum plans to file a lawsuit against KPU over the absence of braille templates for blind voters in the legislative elections 2014.

“We will fight the injustice that the KPU has done against blind voters. We will file a lawsuit against the KPU’s decision of not providing braille templates for us,” Suhendar retorted. The lawsuit will be filed in the Constitution Court or the State Administrative Court (PTUN).

A decision to provide escorts for blind voters at polling stations is a denial of their right to vote in privacy, secrecy and directly, he explained. It also violates the principles of independence and equality for people with disabilities, he highlighted.

According to him, there is an indication that certain parties want to direct blind voters when casting the ballots, by providing someone to accompany them.

“We reject the elections, both the implementation and the results,” Suhendar stressed, expressing his regret that the KPU has been insensitive and does not care for people with disabilities.

By not providing braille templates for blind voters, the Commission has deprived the blind voters of their political rights. The absence of braille templates will be against the principle of secret ballot for voters, including the blind ones, he pointed out.

Suhendar explained that Braille templates were provided in the general elections in 2004 and 2009, but surprisingly the election executors this year have failed to provide the templates in the legislative elections.

NEW YORK — Facebook is buying virtual reality company Oculus, betting $2 billion that its technology will become a new way for people to communicate, learn or be entertained.

“This is a long-term bet on the future of computing,” said Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg Tuesday on a call with analysts. “I believe Oculus can be one of the platforms of the future.”

Irvine, California-based Oculus VR Inc. makes the Oculus Rift, a virtual reality headset that’s received a lot of attention from video game developers, though it has yet to be released for consumers. The headsets cover a user’s eyes and create an immersive world that reacts to turning one’s head or moving back and forth.

Beyond games, Zuckerberg said virtual reality headsets might someday be used to enjoy a courtside seat at a basketball game, study in a classroom, consult with a doctor face-toface or shop in a virtual store.

The technology also has social applications, he said.

“Imagine sharing not just moments with friends online but entire experiences and adventures,” he said.

It is Facebook’s second big acquisition in as many months.

Last month the social network announced that it would pay $19 billion for deal messaging startup WhatsApp, a deal that hasn’t closed.

“I don’t think you should expect us to make multiple multibillion-dollar acquisitions within a couple months frequently,” Zuckerberg said.

But he called Oculus a “unique” company with a major lead on rivals in technology, engineering talent and developer interest.

at a game-developers conference in San Francisco last week.

Zuckerberg said virtual reality technology is a computing platform unto itself, comparing it to personal computers, which revolutionized the world in the 1970s and 1980s, and mobile phones.

Facebook Inc. said Tuesday that the deal includes $400 million in cash and 23.1 million shares worth about $1.6 billion. Oculus employees are also eligible for an additional $300 million if the company achieves certain targets.

Facebook Chief Financial Officer David Ebersman said Oculus was valued based on the expected returns from the video game industry alone, with a higher return expected if it can expand into communications,

entertainment or other fields.

Zuckerberg said Facebook intends to let Oculus continue with its roadmap of development but help out with recruiting, marketing, infrastructure and opening doors to new partnerships. He said he intends not to make a profit on hardware but instead make the product affordable and ubiquitous so Facebook can look at generating revenue from services, software, advertising, virtual goods or other areas.

Facebook says Oculus has received more than 75,000 preorders for second-generation development kits for the headset at $350 apiece. The kits are to ship in July.

Sales of Oculus’ development kits alone are 10 times bigger than all other headsets in the history of virtual reality, said Antonio Rodriguez, general partner of venture capital fund Matrix Partners, an early investor that put $18.5 million in Oculus starting last year.

Investors welcomed European Central Bank President Mario Draghi’s speech on Tuesday in Paris that monetary policy should support the economies of countries that use the euro.

“This is a clear sign that the ECB will continue to hold its finger over the rates button,” IG strategist Evan Lucas said in a market commentary.

“The bank is looking to find a way to chase out funds locked up in wealth products that will then be redirected to areas of the economy that are looking for growth funding.”

More investors are banking that China’s leaders will introduce progrowth measures to prop up a slowing economy. A preliminary reading of China’s manufacturing, released Monday, showed activity at an 8- month low in March.

Reports showing strength in the U.S. economy also underpinned investor sentiment. The Conference Board in the U.S. said its measure of consumer confidence rose last month to its highest since January 2008. Another release showed U.S. home prices edged down in January for a third month, but at a high level compared with a year earlier.

On Wall Street, the S&P 500 rose 0.4 percent to 1,865.62. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 0.6 percent to 16,367.88 while the Nasdaq composite edged up 0.2 percent to 4,234.27.

In energy markets, benchmark U.S. oil for May delivery was up 20 cents at $99.39 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The contract fell 41 cents to settle at $99.19 on Tuesday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3811 from $1.3823 late Tuesday.

The dollar gained to 102.31 yen from 102.26 yen.

DENPASAR - Facing the upcoming legislative election, Bank Indonesia appealed to the public to be more careful in making cash transaction by paying attention to the features of rupiah banknote authenticity. Especially, the political events become vulnerable arena for the circulation of fake banknotes.

Deputy of Bank Indonesia Representative for Region III Bali-Nusra, Ananda Pulungan, said that his institution made cooperation with Bali Police for dissemination on the rupiah banknote authenticity features (CIKUR) to suppress the circulation of fake banknotes. Circulation of fake banknotes was expected to continuously decline in harmony with the increasing capability of the community to detect fake banknotes.

“From January to March 2014, we have organized a coordination meeting on the eradication of fake banknotes with Bali Police and banking as well as socialization on the banknote authenticity identification to tellers, retailer cashiers, Cash in Transit (CIT) officers as well as wider community in Kreneng traditional market,” said Ananda in Denpasar.

He said that before the religious festivity of Nyepi Day falling on Monday, March 31, 2014 as well as preparation of the legislative election in April 2014, there had been no indication of significant improvement of activities in the cash and non-cash payment system. The jury making the valuation was considered unfair, so it resulted in disappointment on the competition participants.

One of them was the customary youth club of Tainsiat hamlet.

On a black billboard, they mentioned the jury’s decision was inconsistent and not objective. In addition to billboards, the Yowana Saka Bhuwana youth club also put a wreath containing the condolence over the defeat of the work of art prepared by the youth of Tainsiat hamlet.

Chairman of the Tainsiat youth club, Gung De, when contacted on Tuesday (Mar 25) said that his party was disappointed with the jury’s decision in the ogoh-ogoh competition of this year. After seeing the results of the assessment by

the jury panel, many ogoh-ogoh figures nominated were considered inappropriate in terms of aesthetics, finishing as well as harmony of the bodily anatomy. Not only that, a lot of ogoh-ogoh figures did not comply with the theme, but got the nomination. “The assessment of jury was not fair,” he said.

Protests against the ogoh-ogoh competition actually did not only occur at this time.

In the implementation of the ogoh-ogoh competition in 2010, a similar case also occurred. At that time the protests came from a number of youth clubs in Denpasar such as the one from Batanbuah hamlet, Kesiman. GIANYAR - Rubbish problems emerge again in the matter of the difficulty of handling and increasing volume. The discipline against the ‘overnight parking’ is increasingly emboldened, especially those exceeding 24 hours.

The plan of action against the vehicles parked on the road body exceeding 24 hours was revealed by Chief of Tabanan Municipal Police, I Wayan Sudarya, recently. According to him, the overnight parking on the road body was considered as one of the causes of traffic congestion. “Obviously, this will become our target this year in response to many complaints from road users,” he said.

Unfortunately, Sudarya was not willing to disclose when the action plan would be carried out. Nevertheless, his party claimed to have had a record where the violation occurred. “We have owned the record where it happens,” he claimed.

However, the prosecution imposed would probably be a reprimand only because the agency had no supporting facilities to apply a more severe sanction such as towing. “So far, our party has not owned a tow truck.

Possibly, we will just give a reprimand,” he explained.

If the Municipal Police remained in the planning phase to discipline the overnight parking on the road side, the residents of Tegal Baleran hamlet, Dauh Peken village, had owned a solution. They utilized a vacant land in its territory to be used as a rented garage with a size of 2.5 meters x 5.5 meters totally consisting of 13 units.

The result was not bad where a garage was rented for IDR 1.1 million a year. “This garage was already established four years ago. The results are used to finance the village activities and the cost of ceremony,” said the former hamlet chief of Tegal Baleran, Gusti Ketut Sudiana.

The idea of making such a rented garage was based on the fact that many local residents parked their vehicle at road side around the hamlet area. He admitted with the existence of the rented garage the number of vehicles parked at road side reduced. “In addition to the safety factor, the condition of road is not like it used to be,” he explained.

He told that for the making of rented garage, the hamlet authority should lend money. “The initial capital was worth IDR 90 million, but it has now been paid off,” he said.

Even, his party planned to make additional garage on the remaining land, but still found difficulty in the matter of fund.

“Actually, we get a lot of demands. If there is possibility to get a loan, we will add to the garage again,” he explained. (kmb28)

LYON, France — Chinese President Xi Jinping was the toast of France as he embarked on a state visit — and what better time just days after China ended an anti-dumping, anti-subsidy investigation of French wine.

Deal-making and commemorations of a half-century of French diplomatic ties with Communist China were the order of business during Xi’s three-day visit, part of his European tour. French officials said the signing of dozens of commercial accords large and small — from nuclear energy to aerospace to agribusiness, even including a possible sausage deal — were being lined up.

Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan were traveling Wednesday to Paris, a day after arriving in the southwestern city of Lyon — a key French destination on the Silk Route centuries ago. They began the day visiting a medical research center and a decades-old FrancoChinese institute in the city. “My visit to France comes at a particular moment, and will allow for work with President Francois Hollande and other French leaders to take stock of 50 years of Sino-French relations, and plan

the future together,” Xi said at a reception following his arrival.

France wants its relations with China to flourish, not least because of a whopping 25.8 billioneuro ($35.6 billion) trade deficit with what is now the world’s second-largest economy. That shortfall represents roughly 40 percent of France’s total foreign trade deficit. French officials also want France to increase its market share in China from about 1.5 percent today — noting with no small amount of envy that Germany’s is about 5 percent.

But many French workers, already worrying about double-digit unemployment rates in France, are fretting about the impact on wages from doing more business with China.

China, already a world leader in manufacturing, is looking to scale up production of valueadded goods and services and tap into French savoir faire in hightech industries.

PERTH, Australia — The desperate, multinational hunt for Flight 370 resumed again Wednesday across a remote stretch of the Indian Ocean after fierce winds and high waves that had forced a daylong halt eased considerably. A total of 12 planes and two ships from the United States, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand were participating in the search, hoping to find even a single piece of the Malaysia Airlines jet that could offer tangible evidence of a crash.

Malaysia announced earlier this week that a mathematical analysis of the final known satellite signals from the plane had proved beyond doubt it gone down in the sea, taking the lives of all 239 people on board. The new data vastly shrunk search zone, but it remains huge — an area estimated at 1.6 million square kilometers (622,000 square miles), about the size of Alaska.

“We’re throwing everything we have at this search,” Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott told Nine network television on Wednesday. “This is about the most inaccessible spot imaginable.

It’s thousands of kilometers from

anywhere,” he later told Seven Network television. He vowed that “we will do what we can to solve this riddle.”

In Beijing, some families held out a glimmer of hope their loved ones might somehow have survived.

About two-thirds of the missing are Chinese, and their relatives have lashed out at Malaysia for essentially declaring their family members dead without any physical evidence of the plane’s remains. Many also believe that the Malaysian officials have not been transparent or swift in communicating information with them about the status of the search.

WHO: Pollution kills 7 million people every year LONDON — Air pollution kills about 7 million people worldwide every year, with more than half of the fatalities due to fumes from indoor stoves, according to a new report from the World Health Organization published Tuesday. The agency said air pollution is the cause of about one in eight deaths and has now become the single biggest environmental health risk. the total estimate from around 8 million to 7 million deaths in 2012.

The new estimates are more than double previous figures and based mostly on modeling. The increase is partly due to better information about the health effects of pollution and improved detection methods. Last year, WHO’s cancer agency classified air pollution as a carcinogen, linking dirty air to lung and bladder cancer.

WHO’s report noted women had higher levels of exposure than men in developing countries.

“Poor women and children pay a heavy price from indoor air pollution since they spend more time at home breathing in smoke and soot from leaky coal and wood cook stoves,” Flavia Bustreo, WHO Assistant Director-General for family, women and children’s health, said in a statement. Other experts said more research was needed to identify the deadliest components of pollution in order to target control measures more effectively.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, California — Before the car-wreck victim reached the emergency room, doctors, residents and nurses at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center knew what to expect by glancing at their smartphones. The details came in the staccato of text messages: A 35-year-old man had driven head-on into a bus. He suffered major chest injuries. His vital signs were crashing.

This was not just another day in the hospital. It was a laboratory billed as the “O.R. of the future,” an ongoing experiment aimed at breaking down barriers that bog down care through open communication, better use of technology and teamwork.

In reality, trauma care is rarely this organized. But those who are prized for individual skills are increasingly learning that when it comes to treating trauma patients from accidents, natural disasters or terrorist bombings, communication and coordination can determine whether someone lives or dies. At an office building less than a mile (1.6 kilometers) from the main Cedars-Sinai campus, doctors are experiment objects in simulations designed to test such skills.

There’s a “mission control” room filled with video screens where trainers keep track of the action. The walls are see-through. Open workspaces are favored over cubicles.

At the heart of the lab is a room that could be outfitted as the ER, operating room or intensive care unit — depending on the practice of the day. Medical simulation labs have evolved over the years, from simple lifelike models of body parts that doctors train on to full-blown replications of hospital rooms where trainees can practice different situations. The Cedars-Sinai space strives to speed up trauma care by eliminating workflow disruptions and honing communication skills.

“Health care today is delivered more by teams rather than by individuals. We have to educate folks in teamwork skills,” said William McGaghie, who heads a professional training institute at Loyola University Chicago Health Sciences Division.

Over the past several years, the world had experienced a sharp, upward trend in overseas travel among the Chinese people. Around 3.62 billion journeys, or 200 million more than last year, are expected to be made by the Chinese people this year, CNN reported.

The Chinese travel and spend more than anyone else on the planet, according to the United Nations as quoted

by CNN. They spent $102 billion on 83 million trips in 2012, and they will continue to dominate the market.

By 2020, more than 200 million Chinese people will go overseas, CNN reported, quoting a report from the Asia-Pacific brokerage firm CLSA, double the number in 2013. This explosion is due in part to higher wages, more annual leaves and easier visas.

The Indonesian government had intensified tourism promotion in China and launched a Chinese-language website to boost the number of Chinese arrivals by 37 percent to one million by the end of 2014.

Bali is one of the world’s 10-most favorite tourist destinations for the Chinese people, apart from Australia, Cape Town, Edinburgh, Hawaii, Madrid, Egypt, Niagara Falls, Paris and Switzerland, according to the result of the polling of the Beijing People’s Broadcasting 2011.

“Most Chinese tourists visiting Indonesia choose Bali as their favorite destination for a vacation,” I Gusti Ngurah Putra, secretary to the tourism and the creative economy ministry’s tourism marketing director general, said recently.

The number of Chinese tourist arrivals in Bali in January 2014 reached 52,060, a sharp increase of 80.52 percent from 28,839 in January 2013.

Chinese tourists in Bali were the second-largest in number after Australians last year, the Bali tourism office had announced recently.

Last year, a total of 387,533 Chinese tourists visited Bali, up 24.65 percent from 310,904 in 2012.

“China is a potential market for Indonesia’s tourism industry, with Bali as the main destination,” Dewa Nyoman Putra, a Bali tourism observer, said.

In 2013, at least 76 million Chinese people traveled overseas as tourists. This year, the number is expected to increase to 100 million, he explained.

China’s economic growth, which has been improving rapidly, has encouraged its people to travel abroad.

This opportunity should be used optimally by Bali, he pointed out.

On the west side of the island, almost 200 volunteers from Quiksilver (30), Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia (32), Hard Rock Hotel (10), Harris Hotel (10), Kuta Paradiso (10), Inna Grand Kuta Hotel (15), youth group Gerakan Fajar Nusantara (25), the Marantha Church of Denpasar (40), Padma Boys Boardriders (17), and Baliwaves.com (5) met at 7:00 am and collected an estimated 350 kgs of trash off the Kuta Beach strip starting from Segara Beach and ending at Padma Beach.

Over in Jimbaran at Kedonganan Beach over 100 volunteers made up of mostly local business owners, drink sellers and hawkers, the Coca-Cola crew and a local government cleaning team collected a massive pile of trash that included logs, tree branches and bamboo in addition to the usual plastic items, which weighed in at an estimated 800 kgs.

Positively for the local community, the amount of public coming to help clean the beach every second week is growing, but as always we are hoping that even more volunteers show up next time on the 9th of April.

Owners reluctant to submit permit Bali Post

BULELENG - Allegation on illegal villas in Buleleng County seems closer to reality.

As proof, from the data collected in the Buleleng Office of Integrated Services (KPT) the permit already issued was only about a hundred villas. In reality, there are many illegal villa whose owners are reluctant to submit the permits to KPT. Interestingly, the owners are reluctant to submit the permits because they have paid many fees collected by certain parties around the villa location.

The Head of the Buleleng Office of Integrated Services (KPT), Putu Karuna, said in his office on Tuesday (Mar 25) that in terms of the task and function, the KPT was not entitled to collect data on the operating villas in Buleleng. The KPT only processed the permit requested by the owner. The permit of villa served by the KPT had been in accordance with the Rules of Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy No.86 HK.501/MKP/2010. Under the rules, it had been set forth that

villas or cottages should have a permit issued by the KPT Buleleng. “All the existing permits we have issued were requested by the owners. Even, most of them submitted their permits after completing the building.

Interestingly, some submitted their permits after the owners got reprimand from relevant agencies,” he said.

According to Karuna, from the information owned by the KPT Buleleng, many villa owners in Buleleng were reluctant to submit their permissions. He

pointed out, many villas or cottages in Gerokgak subdistrict and surrounding areas remained illegal. Despite knowing the information on the illegal villas, the KPT could not perform data collection. Data inventory should be carried out by technical agencies with the Buleleng Municipal Police.

“Based on information we received, there are many illegal villas, especially in Gerokgak and surrounding areas. Hopefully, this problem can be followed up by technical agencies and if the

request has been received we will process the permission,” he added.

On the other hand, Karuna said that compared to the number of villas operating in North Bali, only a few was willing to seek permission. Even, the villa owners tended to ignore the permit and prioritize the development first. Actually, pursuant to the rules, the owners were obliged to submit the permit before building.

Having been traced, in fact the villa owners were reluctant to submit their permit because they often paid fees levied by certain parties in the neighborhood around the villa location. The levies were ranging from voluntary contributions up to regular dues levied by certain parties in the location of the villa.

Since they had been collected many dues, most villa owners on behalf of local residents were reluctant to submit their permission to the KPT Buleleng.

“We do not blame on the villa owners only due to many dues levied by certain parties and there is more than one collection, so this makes them lazy to submit the permission to the KPT office. Hopefully, this can become a special record for technical agencies to overcome the problems,” he explained.

To be noted, the Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana, started to be furious with the presence of illegal villas operating in his region. Other than being illegal, based on his field inspection, it was found that many villa buildings owned foreigners violated the coastal and ravine borderline.

Responding to this condition, the regent immediately instructed the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency to perform data collection and the illegal villas should be disciplined.

However, so far the instruction had not been followed up by relevant technical agency. (mud)

Hotel General Managers (GM) took part in Certified Hotel Administrator (CHA) Workshop started on March 25 through 28, 2014.

Twelve GM from Bali, Western Sumatra, Bogor and Jakarta joined the workshop held in International Bali Tourism Institute (STP BI).

The workshop then will be continued with certification test carry out by lecturer from American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI).

Director of International Academic Affairs STP BI, I Gede Wiwin Suyasa, CHE said that the CHA is the international certification for GM. It is also the highest international certification in the hotel industry. “The program is for the GM who already has the position at least for three years,” he added.

He explained that in the workshop, there are materials; consist of Human Resource, Finance, Sales & Marketing, Food & Beverage, Room Division and Leadership.

“The goal of the workshop is self development so the participant can enroll individually or through their own company,” Wiwin said

The purpose of the certification is that the GM will be equal with international one as hotel administrator. The participants of CHA will receive academic acknowledgement from the hotel industry throughout the world.

Wiwin explained that STP BI became the host of the event because the institute has become global academic partner AHLEI since November 2013. “Now, all training program and academic of AHLEI can be done in Bali and not in US,” he added.

In addition of CHA, there will be Certified Hospitality Trainer (CHT) and Certified Hospitality Education (CHE) in May and also will be held in STP BI. “CHE is the highest certification for the lecturer in tourism education while this year, we also has the special program called certificate guess satisfactions gold for hotels,” Wiwin said.

In June through October, STP BI will held supervisor and head of department certification. “The rating of graduation of CHA in Indonesia is 75% in one test while CHE reach 80%,” Wiwin stated.(ocha)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Jolie surprises CinemaCon to tout ‘Unbroken’ Associated Press Writer

LAS VEGAS — Angelina Jolie took to the stage at CinemaCon, the annual convention of theater exhibitors, on Tuesday to reveal footage from the upcoming survival saga “Unbroken,” which she directed and produced.

“I wanted to make this film because its message is one that we all need now more than ever,” said Jolie in front of the crowd of theater owners at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Shot in Sydney last year, the film tells the true story of Lou Zamperini, a World War II hero and track star who ran in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Zamperini, who is played by Jack O’Connell, spent a harrowing 47 days afloat in the Pacific Ocean following the 1943 crash of his U.S. military plane. “She fought for it and earned the right to direct it,” said Langley, who called Jolie “a true filmmaker.”

“Unbroken,” to be released in December, is based on Laura Hillenbrand’s book “Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption,” which chronicles Zamperini’s life.

“Lou Zamperini is the toughest man I have ever met,” said Jolie. “He’s a fighter and true hero. He is also a man of faith, full of love and humility. He sounds perfect. But he wasn’t always.

Smoking, stealing and drinking by the time he was 9, he was convinced he was worth nothing and full of darkness.”

The footage teased revealed affecting scenes of Zamperini’s struggles, from his efforts to escape from his military plane after it crashed into the ocean, to the beatings her underwent as a prisoner.

“I’m not,” he replies. “It’s you who is changing me.” But it’s not all sentimental. The camera pans over Christian’s collection of S&M toys as Beyonce’s sleek and sexy “Haunted” plays in the

background. The film is set for release on Valentine’s Day of 2015.

In the trailer, Walker, along with his crew of fierce drivers, stun viewers with a stunt involving driving cars out of a helicopter and safely landing with the help of parachutes. Flashy fight scenes and plenty of bare skin are once again on display. The seventh installment is scheduled to hit theaters on April 10, 2015.

Ngurah Rai Airport to close on Nyepi Day Bali Post

DENPASAR - To support the smoothness and security of the implementation of Nyepi in the Caka New Year 1936 in Bali, the PT Angkasa Pura I as the operator of the Ngurah Rai International Airport sent A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) to airports around the world. This notice is also delivered to the airline companies making cooperation with the Air Navigation.

Co-General Manager of the Ngurah Rai International Airport, I Gusti Ngurah Ardita, said that as on the Nyepi in the previous years, the Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport would undergo a closure for 24 hours. It commenced on March 31, 2014 at 06:00 a.m. until April 1, 2014 at 06:00 a.m.

“With this Notam the airline can arrange far in advance not to schedule flight to Bali during the closure period,” said Ngurah Ardita.

According to him, though the airport would be closed for 24- hours, the personnel associated with flight would remain on duty. This effort was to anticipate the request of technical landing or emergency landing, including medical evacuation. “Although we are not in

operation, we will remain to alert our personnel for anticipation,” he said.

He said that during the airport closure, a total of 400 scheduled flights were estimated to be nullified consisting of 248 domestic flights dan152 international flights. However, the closure of the airports during the Nyepi Day had been going on since the year 2000.

“Some things are still coordinated and prepared to ensure that the entire implementation of Nyepi at the airport can run smoothly and securely. The airport will be re-opened and operated normally on April 1, 2014 at 06:01 a.m.,” he said.
