Spike Lee: channelling America’s black rage
NEW YORK - For more than 30 years, Spike Lee has captivated audiences -- and sometimes angered them -- with his provocative, frank depictions of black America infused with his signature mix of entertainment, activism and rage. And for the first time, that work has earned him a competitive Oscar as the 61-year-old Lee picked up the prize for best adapted screenplay on Sunday for his incendiary race drama “BlacKkKlansman.” “Four hundred years. Our ancestors were stolen from Mother Africa and bought to Jamestown, Virginia, enslaved,” he said, referring the first documented Africans to come to the first English settlement in the Americas, in 1619. It was a rousing impromptu address, delivered from the stage at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, during which Lee spoke of slaves forced to carry out back-breaking work from dawn until dark. He paid tribute to his grandmother, who “lived to be 100 years young, who was a Spelman College graduate even though her mother was a slave.”
“BlacKkKlansman” is a searing yet sometimes hilarious broadside against racism with the strangerthan-fiction true story of an African-American police officer who managed to infiltrate the highest levels of the Ku Klux Klan. John David Washington, son of Denzel, stars as that cop, Ron Stallworth. Oscar nominee Adam Driver plays his white partner, who acts as his proxy for the actual undercover operation. “Six words: ‘Black man infiltrates Ku Klux Klan’,” Lee told CBS News earlier this month of the film pitch. “That was it. That was it. The greatest ever. Six words!” Lee has inspired other black directors for decades. Michael Genet, an actor and screenwriter who penned the script for Lee’s 2004 comedy “She Hate Me,” says Lee “opened the doors for everybody who’s come after him.” African-American director Ryan Coogler “couldn’t be who he is today with ‘Black Panther’ without Spike Lee doing what he did,” Genet adds. “It’s impossible.” (afp)

The royal couple, on their last official foreign tour before becoming parents, petted horses and strolled hand in hand through the equestrian club in Sale in the outskirts of Rabat. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as they are formally known, met disabled young people grooming horses, and heard how spending time with the animals helps them face their challenges. Meghan chatted with Zakaria, a 20-year-old with mobility issues who become an IT instructor with the help of equine therapy, 24-yearold Driss, who has speech difficulties, and Ikram, a 19-year-old with Down syndrome. The royal couple, who married last
year, appeared relaxed as they stroked horses poking their heads out of the stable doors in the morning sunshine. Kim hits the road in Hanoi ahead of Trump nuclear summit

After an initial historic meeting in Singapore in June that produced only a vague statement about denuclearisation, analysts say the second date must deliver more concrete steps towards dismantling Pyongyang’s arsenal. The normally sleepy Vietnamese border station of Dong Dang spruced itself up for Kim’s arrival after the young leader’s 4,000-kilometre (2,500-mile), two-and-a-half-day odyssey through China aboard his olive green train. arms as Kim strolled down the red carpet waving and grinning, surrounded by a phalanx of aides and security personnel. Local official Hoang Thi Thuy said she had waited in the cold rain since before dawn for a glimpse of Kim, the first North Korean leader to visit fellow one-party state Vietnam since his grandfather Kim Il Sung in 1964. “I was so excited when we were told to stand in place for the arrival of the train,” she told AFP. “We saw the leader from afar. I felt so happy,
it’s hard to describe.” Wearing his trademark Maostyle black suit and flanked by his troops of bodyguards, Kim was ushered into a waiting MercedesBenz and his motorcade rolled off towards Hanoi, where armoured personnel carriers patrolled the roads amid ultra-tight security. He was greeted in Hanoi by cheering crowds behind barriers near the colonial-era pastel yellow Hanoi Opera House before arriving at the Melia hotel where he was expected to stay this week.
After a few hours’ rest, he then departed his hotel for the North Korean embassy in Hanoi, echoing the summit in Singapore where he took in the sights on an unscheduled sortie. Trump was taking a more conventional route on Air Force One to the meeting and was expected to arrive in Hanoi late Tuesday. He tweeted he was looking forward to a “very productive” second summit. The US president again dangled the carrot of economic progress for North Korea if it gives up its nuclear programme. “With complete Denuclearization, North Korea will rapidly become an Economic Powerhouse,” tweeted Trump. “Without it, just more of the
same.” “Chairman Kim will make a wise decision!” Relations between the two mercurial leaders have undergone a dramatic turnaround, from flinging personal insults and threats of destruction to Trump declaring he had fallen “in love” with Kim through an exchange of letters. Division Head of Infrastructure, Facility and Extension at the Bali Food Crops, Horticulture and Plantation Agency, IGA B Adiyasa, stated the agency has the tasks of optimizing
land for food crops to produce food. In terms of producing food, special effort is carried out while supporting the central program. Bali provincial government has taken concrete measures to produce food and improve the welfare of farmers. In terms of welfare of farmers, the provincial government is committed to absorbing local agricultural products with the issuance of Governor Regulation No. 99/2018. The dissemination related to the governor regulation has been carried out to the districts and municipality. When launching, there has also been the MoU with producers and consumers. The MoU is about distributing agricultural products. So, the results of farmers are certainly absorbed by the market. Furthermore, another implementation is that there will be meetings with consumers such as ITDC. “This Wednesday, we will meet with ITDC,” he said. Some hotels in the ITDC area currently have absorbed local agricultural products. “Meanwhile, based on information, it has been partially taken and maybe it will be optimized later. Implementation of Governor Regulation No. 99 is all-wrong
DENPASAR - Governor Regulation No. 99/2018 concerning Marketing and Utilization of Agricultural, Fisheries and Local Industry Products in Bali is expected to arrange the marketing of local products from upstream to downstream. However, the implementation of the Governor Regulation is considered to be awry because there is a possibility that it will be violated by bringing in supplies from outside Bali. “It’s all-wrong. For example, concerning fruits, in terms of quantity they are very limited. Beyond the season, there is no fruit. The quality is the same,” said Chairman of the Commission II of the Bali House of Representatives, Ketut Suwandhi, when confirmed on Monday (Feb. 25). Suwandhi explained the supply of local fruits in Bali such as mangosteen, durian and banana
is seasonal. Unlike Java, its apple production never ends. Local production to fulfill the needs of the holiday alone remains to lack, let alone meet the needs of hotels, restaurants and supermarkets. “For rahinan or ceremonies, they are still lacking. Many of us are supported from outside Bali. Especially from Java like Banyuwangi, we bring in bananas and young coconut. When crossing service is hampered for three days, for instance, Bali is overwhelmed. It’s not expensive, but the supplies are not available,” explained this Golkar politician. According to Suwandhi, Bali is still very much dependent on production from outside the region. It can even be said that economy of the region or outside Bali is actually powered by Bali. “Indeed, internally we must provide training first, and the gardens should be
developed,” he said. A member of Commission II at the Bali House of Representatives, AA Ngurah Adhi Ardhana, said the governor regulation, one of the contents, requires supermarket to buy and sell food crops, horticulture and plantations as well as farms at least 60 percent of the total volume of products marketed. It is worried this will result in problems when local farmers cannot provide a minimum supply of 60 percent. The governor regulation is likely to be violated by bringing in supplies from outside Bali, but recognized as a local product. “It will become a separate problem, other than certainty of the origin of the local product itself that may be in single trade chain, there are distributors claiming the products of outside Bali are also local ones,” he explained. Previously, the Head of the
Bali Food Crops, Horticulture and Plantation Agency, Ida Bagus Wisnuardhana, stated the Governor Regulation 99 mainly regulates the trade system for agricultural commodities, livestock, fisheries and industries of local Bali. Especially for agriculture, the commodity meant is not only fruits but also food crops, horticulture, and plantations. The regulation also governs the matter of quality and continuity. “Of course, the users like restaurants, catering companies and supermarkets are expected to adjust to the conditions of the season in the field. On that account, some of our fruit products of seasonal in nature should be adjusted to the conditions of the season by the users,” he added. However, Wisnuardhana continued that his agency can guarantee that products will be available throughout the year. It has set a
commodity region, where districts and municipality have their own superior products such as melons and watermelons in Negara (Jembrana), mangosteen in Tabanan, mango at Depeha (Buleleng) or dragon fruit from Buleleng. Furthermore, mapping will be the tasks of the Coordination Team in which has working groups. “Certainly, one of the tasks of the working group is to carry out mapping where the product is available in how many numbers and when they are available, including the team’s task later is to compile the cost of production per unit of weight,” he explained. According to Wisnuardhana, compilation of the production costs per unit of weight is related to the purchase price of farmers’ products under the Governor Regulation that is set forth at 20 percent above the production cost. Foldable phone outlook hinges on price
BARCELONA - Handset makers are racing to launch their first smartphones with folding screens but analysts warn the technology is still too rudimentary -- and expensive -- to woo consumers in large numbers for now. Samsung, the world’s biggest seller of smartphones, unveiled a handset that folds open like a book to be a tablet at an event in San Francisco on Wednesday, becoming the first major manufacturer to offer the long-awaited feature. China’s Huawei, the world’s second biggest smartphone seller, immediately followed in its footsteps and presented its own phone with a folding screen -- the Mate X -- on Sunday at an event in Barcelona on the start of the Mobile World Congress trade fair. The Mate X’s screen wraps around the outside so users can still view it when it’s closed, unlike the Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, which has a screen that folds shut. Huawei’s foldable phone will sell for 2,299 euros ($2,600) when it goes on sale by midyear, even more than Samsung’s which is priced starting at $1,980 (1,745 euros). The audience at both events gasped when the prices of the devices were announced. China’s Xiaomi, South Korea’s LG and other handsets makers have said they are working on phones with foldable screens of their own. Foldable handsets represent a significant break with the dominant shape smartphones have taken since Steve Jobs introduced the world to the iPhone in 2007 -- a dark black rectangle with a single

Handset makers hope foldable phones will help revive smartphone sales. Global smartphone shipments fell 4.1 percent in 2018 to a total of 1.4 billion as people hold on to their phones longer due to a lack of new features, according to research firm IDC. But Ben Wood, an analyst at tech research consultancy CCS Insight, said the appeal of foldable phones would be limited for now to “gadget lovers” who want the latest tech. “This right now looks like a solution looking for a problem. Most consumers will look at it right now and go ‘it is very, very expensive’. It is kind of an early stage product. I think we are kind of in the Stone Age of the flexible device,” he said. CCS Insight predicts foldable phones will remain a niche category until 2022. Aside from its steep price tag, problems with the devices include poor readability in sunlight, and a bulky design needed to protect the screen’s fold, according to the research firm. - Durable? -
Analysts have also expressed concerns over the durability of the
devices since folds are typically areas where problems are most likely to develop in electronic devices over time. “Generally the trend has been to have a design that does not have any mechanical elements in a smartphone to make them more durable,” said Ian Fogg, a senior mobile industry analyst at OpenSignal, which collects and analyses data from mobile networks. Both Samsung and Huawei said their devices can withstand the wear-and-tear of over 100,000 folds. Analysts also questioned if the phones will work as well when they are folded up as when they are unfolded. IDC senior analyst Ryan Reith said he was sceptical that smartphones with foldable screens will work well since apps will need to be “tweaked” to ensure that they work on the smaller screen when the phone is folded up “It needs to make sure that there is seamless switch from one (screen) to the other. There is a lot of work that has to come with that,” said Reith. Research firm Strategy Analytics forecasts global sales of just 1.2 million foldable phones this year, which will rise to around 64.9 million phones in 2023 -- just 3.5 percent of projected global smartphone sales that year. But finding someone’s exact location on difficult terrain often takes too long. New triple-antenna transceivers can help boost the signal, but what do you do about people who aren’t wearing any kind of transceiver? “We are working on thermal and multispectral systems that can see gases such as methane and carbon dioxide and could also detect people buried in mud slides, or under rubble,” explains Jean-Yves Barman, chief executive of software developer SCS Smart City Swiss. But finding people is one thing, digging them out is another. And no drones can yet do the digging. This is where dogs, fellow skiers and rescue teams are needed. “The goal is to find them and dig them out as fast as you can,” Mr Schniewind says. “That’s why most people who survive are saved by their companions rather than by organised rescue missions.” Other technologies come in. Some skiwear is now fitted with so-called Recco reflectors that bounce back a directional signal to mountain rescue teams equipped with a Recco detector. Roland Georges, president of the high mountain guides office in the French resort of Courchevel, says: “All the guides in Courchevel have Recco reflectors in their ski gear. However, it takes time to raise an alert and get a helicopter out.” Mr Georges believes drones could also become indispensible for mountain guides heading off the beaten track. “Having seen how small and quick to activate drones can be, I would not be surprised if all guides are soon carrying one,” he says. But for off-piste skiing fans, lured by the thrill of carving their own tracks through fresh powder snow, it’s an ever-present risk. More than 150 people - mostly skiers, snowboarders and snowmobilers - are killed in avalanches every year, according to National Geographic statistics. This month alone, there have been deaths in Switzerland, Italy, Canada and North America. Drone manufacturers claim UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) could slash the toll by finding victims faster, and allowing ski patrollers to clear snow on high-risk slopes using explosives - without endangering themselves. Some mountain rescue services claim drones reduce their search times by up to 50%, because a drone can scan a large avalanche site more quickly than a person on foot. And when it comes to avalanches, time is of the essence. More than 90% of people buried by avalanches survive if dug out within 15 minutes. But after 45 minutes, the odds of survival drop to about 20%. Suffocation is the main cause of death. “Once you’re trapped, you can’t move, even if you’re only under 10cm (4in) of snow, and carbon dioxide quickly builds up around your mouth,” says avalanche expert Henry Schniewind. For someone in this situation, the best hope of rescue is currently an avalanche transceiver. Worn under your jacket, these hand-sized radio devices emit a low-power pulsed signal when activated. They can also be switched to receive mode, allowing those skiing with avalanche victims to pinpoint the area where the signal is strongest, then use probes and shovels to dig them out. Other than disrupting the scenery and the environment, the garbage piles are also on the roadside. Headman of Lelateng, Kadek Suardana, confirmed on Sunday afternoon that the piles of garbage should have been cleaned frequently. Village authority has allocated special funds for garbage collection by using trucks. Unfortunately, the village official’s efforts do not get optimal support as showed by residents remaining to trash on the bridge. By and large, the disposal is carried out around the early hours of the morning until early morning or at dawn. AMLAPURA - Two tourists from Russia, namely Djima, 30, and Arcer, 34, were lost when carrying out climbing activities to the summit of Mount Agung. They both were lost because they did not know the way to go down. To get to the foot of the mountain, they followed the river channel in Mount Agung. Based on information obtained, both victims, having profession as musician, did climbing on the Mount Agung on Saturday (Feb. 23) at 00.00 from Pasar Agung Temple at Selat. When going down, both guests were confused about the road conditions so they did not know the terrain to go back down. As a result, they finally followed the river flow. And around 07:00, a resident of Yeh Kori, Jungutan village, heard people shouting for help. At
that time, the Yeh Kori resident was looking for flowers. Hearing people asking for help, the resident immediately told Yeh Kori hamlet chief, Komang Sudirman. TOKYO - Two rare oarfish, giant deep-sea serpents long believed by locals to be a harbinger of earthquakes and tsunamis, have been caught off the Japanese island of Okinawa.

This can be an example for other villages to learn and preserve the environment,

According to him, humans cannot avoid the use of plastic, but the Klungkung government has a solution in reducing plastic waste through Local Waste Processing Sites (TOSS). “Let’s instill in ourselves and the community that we are heroes of garbage. We have to fight against the waste, especially plastic waste. Plastic waste has disrupted soil fertility and damaged marine biota,” explained Regent Suwirta, while delivering that such an action is also filled with planting of shade trees. Meanwhile, Chief of the Besan village Pokdarwis (Tourism Awareness Group), Nengah Supastawa, said the action is the first measure in supporting the realization of Besan tourism village. The community was moved to get involved in the plastic waste cleanup because it had polluted the environment of Besan village. Fishermen were stunned to find a pair of the silvery fish -- the bigger one measuring four metres (13 feet) -- alive in their nets late last month as the number of sightings of the mysterious creature in Japanese waters continues to rise. “I had only ever heard stories about this fish,” the Yomitan fisheries cooperative association’s Takashi Yamauchi told AFP. “When I saw them at the port, I was quite shocked.” The fish, caught off Okinawa’s southwest Toya port on January 28, both subsequently died. More than 12 elusive oarfish -- known in Japanese as “Ryugu no tsukai” or the “Messenger from the Sea God’s Palace” -- have washed up on shores in Japan over the past year. Oarfish live between 200 and 1,000 metres below the surface of the Pacific and the Indian Oceans and have serpentine bodies with red fins that give them a dragon-like appearance. Japanese folklore has it that they move to shallower seas before underwater earth-
quakes, possibly due to electromagnetic changes that occur with tectonic activity. Local media reported that a spate of sightings preceded the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that left about 18,500 dead or missing in northeast Japan, strengthening the myth. The recent oarfish discoveries have sparked renewed debate on social media about impending doom, although scientists dispute such claims. “They looked mysterious and beautiful,” Satomi Higa of the Yomitan’s fisheries cooperative association told the Okinawa Times. “They looked like real dragons.” Although rarely caught in fishing nets, six oarfish were recently captured or found beached in Toyama on the western shores of central Japan. NEW DELHI - India said Tuesday its warplanes attacked a militant camp where Pakistanbacked fighters were preparing suicide attacks on its cities, sending tensions between the arch-rivals to a new peak. A “very large number” of militants from the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) group were killed in the nightime attack, according to the foreign ministry, while Pakistan said its fighter jets scrambled to force the Indian jets back and that there were no casualties. The escalation came after a February 14 suicide bombing claimed by JeM that killed 40 troops in Indian Kashmir, setting off a chain of threats and counter-warnings between the nuclear-armed neighbours. “A very large number of Jaishe-Mohammad terrorists, trainers, senior commanders and groups
of jihadis who were being trained for fidayeen (suicide) action were eliminated,” Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said. “Credible intelligence was received that JeM was attempting another suicide terror attack in various parts of the country,” he told a press conference in New Delhi, describing the threat as “imminent”. Pakistan’s military spokesman Major General Asif Ghafoor said on Twitter that the Indian Air Force had violated the Line of Control that divides Indian- and Pakistaniadministered Kashmir. “Facing timely and effective response from Pakistan Air Force (the Indian jets) released payload in haste while escaping near Balakot. CUCUTA - Some Venezuelans are living in limbo across the border in Colombia, trapped after a failed effort to bring humanitarian aid into their country. That weekend drive turned violent as supporters of the opposition clashed with Venezuelan security forces on the borders with Colombia and Brazil, leaving four people dead. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro later shut down four bridges that cross the frontier into Colombia. So some Venezuelans who came across to volunteer in the aid shipment effort, or who work in Colombia but live in Venezuela, are suddenly trapped on the Colombian side. One of those volunteers is Nicolasa Gil, 71, who says she does not mind having to sleep on the streets of the border town of Cucuta. “What scares me is going over into my country, because we are safer here than there,” she told AFP. She recalled how she and other volunteers were trying to cross one of the bridges over the weekend with trucks carrying food and medicine and all hell broke loose at the midway point of the span when Venezuelan riot police intervened. “As soon as we reached that point,
they attacked us with tear gas and we had to leave the trucks. Those animals burned them,” said Gil. Gil said she had not been home to her native Venezuelan state of Merida since Saturday because she heeded opposition leader and self-declared interim president Juan Guaido’s call for people to go into Colombia and bring back mainly US aid that has been stockpiled at the border. TEHRAN - Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who was the lead negotiator in a landmark 2015 nuclear deal with major powers, has abruptly tendered his resignation, although there was no sign President Hassan Rouhani had accepted it. Zarif offered an apology for his “shortcomings” in the unexpected message on Instagram on Monday, with prominent members of parliament immediately calling for Rouhani not to accept the resignation. Zarif, 59, has served as Rouhani’s foreign minister since August 2013 and has been under constant pressure from hardliners who opposed his policy of detente with the West. “I apologise for my inability to continue serving and for all the shortcomings during my term in office,” Zarif said in the message posted on his verified Instagram account. He thanked Iranians and “respected officials” for their support “in the last 67 months”. The resignation was confirmed
by an informed source, however in a tweet, Rouhani’s chief of staff strongly denied reports it had been accepted by the president. Zarif gave no explanation for his resignation. But it came hours after a surprise visit to Tehran by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who has been a major recipient of Iranian aid during his country’s nearly eight-year civil war, and Iran’s Entekhab news agency reported the two appeared to be linked. According to the semi-official ISNA news agency, Zarif was not present at any of Assad’s meetings with Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Rouhani. Entekhab said it tried to reach Zarif and received the following message: “After the photos of today’s meetings, Javad Zarif no longer has any credibility in the world as the foreign minister!” In an interview with the conservative Jomhoori Eslami daily published on Tuesday, Zarif said “everything will be lost, when there is no trust in the manager of foreign policy.” (afp)

Raging bull: smashing away anger at Indonesia’s ‘Temper Clinic’
Armed with crowbars and wearing protective gear, three women assembled at a Jakarta stress clinic survey the cluster of bottles they’re about to smash to pieces. “I feel relieved. It’s like something I have been holding inside is finally released when I smashed those bottles,” Genta Kalbu Tanjung, a 20-year-old university student, told AFP as blaring rock music pulsated in the background. Tanjung and her two friends paid 125,000 rupiah ($8.85) each to unleash their pent-up rage at the Temper Clinic, which also lets clients bust up old televisions and printers for a slightly higher price. Inside a bare smash room, one wall is covered with a written reminder: “Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” Aliya Dewayanti Senoajie wanted to use the students’ half-hour session to channel her frustrations as a school holiday quickly comes to an end. “The break is over -- it was too short and I’m not ready to go back to school,” Senoajie said, declaring her bust-it-up session a success. “It was really fun. My adrenaline was pumping.” The clinic opened last summer in a posh Jakarta neighbourhood after co-owner Masagus Yusuf Albar returned from an overseas holiday where he saw similar businesses sprouting up. The first dedicated space for such destruction therapy opened in Japan in 2008, with a view to helping stressed salarymen relieve their pent up frustrations. It has spread in popularity and temper clinics, also known as rage rooms, can be found in most key US and European cities. The trend has taken off in Asia in the past two years with similar ventures opening in China, Singapore, and Hong Kong. But the service might not immediately make sense for a place like Indonesia -- its citizens regularly rank high among the world’s leaststressed people. That wasn’t lost on Albar, who conceded that life in places like Bali or jungle-clad Sumatra was pretty relaxed. But not so in Jakarta, a city of 10 million plus with hours-long traffic jams that can drive the most patient mad and where school and work are becoming increasingly competitive. A 2017 survey done by dry cleaning firm Zipjet found Jakarta was one of the world’s most stressful cities based on criteria including traffic, air and noise pollution and unemployment. “Try to go anywhere on Friday night and it’s very annoying. My friend once got caught in the traffic and she ended up crying. That’s how bad it was,” Albar told AFP. “Customers find this cathartic,” he said. But smashing things up to let off steam is not necessarily risk free, warned Jakarta-based psychologist Liza Marielly Djaprie. She suggested that regularly using such rooms could simply condition the body to need an aggressive release whenever tensions rise. Djaprie explained: “I don’t usually encourage patients to destroy things just so it won’t become a habit. We need to learn about our anger -- and anger management.” (afp)

Meduwe Karang Temple SINGARAJA - Meduwe Karang Temple is a beautiful landmark in the district of Kubutambahan, North Bali, with some remarkable features to behold. Meduwe Karang Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the male counterpart of the rice goddess Dewi Sri. The name of the temple means to whom the earth belongs, and the local people come here to beg for a rich harvest in the surrounding coffee, maize, fruit and vegetable plantations. Meduwe Karang Temple consists of three parts. In the first courtyard (jaba) are three platforms, with 13 figures in the lowest row, ten in the middle row and 13 in the rear row. All the figures represent characters from the “Ramayana”. lights are classical Balinese stone temple architecture and a peculiar wall relief of a highly stylised man riding a bicycle with floral wheels. The figure is widely thought to be that of Dutch artist, lithographer and ethnologist, Wijnand Otto Jan Nieuwenkamp, who was also considered the first European artist to visit the island back in 1906. Nieuwenkamp spent a considerable amount of time in these northern parts, including Kubutambahan and Meduwe Karang Temple, studying the local arts and culture with a bike for his daily commute. This in turn inspired locals about this new foreign figure and his strange metal device. So they eventually set their admiration in sandstone. A four-tiered split gate (candi bentar) leads into the second courtyard (jaba tengah). On the rear wall, which lies between this courtyard and the third one (jeroan) containing the holy of holies
(bebaturan), are a whole series of figures. In the center of the third courtyard is a square stepped platform on which are, to the left, a gedong pesimpangan dedicated to Ratu Ayu Sari (a manifestation of the earth mother Ibu Prtiwi), and to the right the gedong pesimpangan of Ratu Ngurah Sari, protector of the produce of the earth. Of particular interest is a relief on the right-hand side of the central platform, showing a man on a bicycle, the wheels of which are decorated with flowers. Although the local people believe that this carving is at least 400 years old, it is thought that the figure on the bicycle represents the Dutch ethnologist W. O. J. Nieuwenkamp, who rode on a bicycle (a means of transport previously unknown to the local people) when working in northern Bali around 1904. Despite restorations in the past, the temple’s shrines, walls and

Simeone faces UEFA investigation after controversial celebration
UEFA announced on Monday they have started disciplinary proceedings into improper conduct by Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone. The Argentinian celebrated his side’s first goal in their 2-0 Champions League last 16 first win over Juventus on February 20 by grasping his genitals and thrusting out his groin. Simeone apologised for his behaviour the following day and said
it was to recognise the courage his team showed in the victory. Juve’s Massimiliano Allegri and the Italian club also face disciplinary action for the late kick-off of the game in the Spanish capital. Atletico also face charges that their fans blocked stairways and threw objects during the match. No date for the hearing has been set by the governing body. The second leg of the tie will be played in Turin on March 12. (afp)

The Argentinian celebrated his side’s first goal in their 2-0 Champions League last 16 first win over Juventus on February 20 by grasping his genitals and thrusting out his groin. Simeone apologised for his behaviour the following day and said
it was to recognise the courage his team showed in the victory. Juve’s Massimiliano Allegri and the Italian club also face disciplinary action for the late kick-off of the game in the Spanish capital. Atletico also face charges that their fans blocked stairways and threw objects during the match. No date for the hearing has been set by the governing body. lights are classical Balinese stone temple architecture and a peculiar wall relief of a highly stylised man riding a bicycle with floral wheels. The figure is widely thought to be that of Dutch artist, lithographer and ethnologist, Wijnand Otto Jan Nieuwenkamp, who was also considered the first European artist to visit the island back in 1906. Nieuwenkamp spent a considerable amount of time in these northern parts, including Kubutambahan and Meduwe Karang Temple, studying the local arts and culture with a bike for his daily commute. This in turn inspired locals about this new foreign figure and his strange metal device. So they eventually set their admiration in sandstone. A four-tiered split gate (candi bentar) leads into the second courtyard (jaba tengah). On the rear wall, which lies between this courtyard and the third one (jeroan) containing the holy of holies
(bebaturan), are a whole series of figures. In the center of the third courtyard is a square stepped platform on which are, to the left, a gedong pesimpangan dedicated to Ratu Ayu Sari (a manifestation of the earth mother Ibu Prtiwi), and to the right the gedong pesimpangan of Ratu Ngurah Sari, protector of the produce of the earth. Of particular interest is a relief on the right-hand side of the central platform, showing a man on a bicycle, the wheels of which are decorated with flowers. Although the local people believe that this carving is at least 400 years old, it is thought that the figure on the bicycle represents the Dutch ethnologist W. O. J. Nieuwenkamp, who rode on a bicycle (a means of transport previously unknown to the local people) when working in northern Bali around 1904. Despite restorations in the past, the temple’s shrines, walls and

CUCUTA - Some Venezuelans are living in limbo across the border in Colombia, trapped after a failed effort to bring humanitarian aid into their country. That weekend drive turned violent as supporters of the opposition clashed with Venezuelan security forces on the borders with Colombia and Brazil, leaving four people dead. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro later shut down four bridges that cross the frontier into Colombia. So some Venezuelans who came across to volunteer in the aid shipment effort, or who work in Colombia but live in Venezuela, are suddenly trapped on the Colombian side. One of those volunteers is Nicolasa Gil, 71, who says she does not mind having to sleep on the streets of the border town of Cucuta. “What scares me is going over into my country, because we are safer here than there,” she told AFP. She recalled how she and other volunteers were trying to cross one of the bridges over the weekend with trucks carrying food and medicine and all hell broke loose at the midway point of the span when Venezuelan riot police intervened. “As soon as we reached that point,
they attacked us with tear gas and we had to leave the trucks. Those animals burned them,” said Gil. Gil said she had not been home to her native Venezuelan state of Merida since Saturday because she heeded opposition leader and self-declared interim president Juan Guaido’s call for people to go into Colombia and bring back mainly US aid that has been stockpiled at the border. She can’t reach anyone else, either. “I imagine they are blocking calls,” said Machua, who is 40. She said she is so furious she is considering supporting the idea of the use of military force to oust Maduro. US President Donald Trump says he has not ruled out this option. “What must happen, let it happen,” said Machua. She said no one is telling her when she will be able to go home and be with her son. TEHRAN - Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who was the lead negotiator in a landmark 2015 nuclear deal with major powers, has abruptly tendered his resignation, although there was no sign President Hassan Rouhani had accepted it. Zarif offered an apology for his “shortcomings” in the unexpected message on Instagram on Monday, with prominent members of parliament immediately calling for Rouhani not to accept the resignation. Zarif, 59, has served as Rouhani’s foreign minister since August 2013 and has been under constant pressure from hardliners who opposed his policy of detente with the West. “I apologise for my inability to continue serving and for all the shortcomings during my term in office,” Zarif said in the message posted on his verified Instagram account. He thanked Iranians and “respected officials” for their support “in the last 67 months”. The resignation was confirmed
by an informed source, however in a tweet, Rouhani’s chief of staff strongly denied reports it had been accepted by the president. Zarif gave no explanation for his resignation. But it came hours after a surprise visit to Tehran by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who has been a major recipient of Iranian aid during his country’s nearly eight-year civil war, and Iran’s Entekhab news agency reported the two appeared to be linked. According to the semi-official ISNA news agency, Zarif was not present at any of Assad’s meetings with Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Rouhani. Raging bull: smashing away anger at Indonesia’s ‘Temper Clinic’
Armed with crowbars and wearing protective gear, three women assembled at a Jakarta stress clinic survey the cluster of bottles they’re about to smash to pieces. “I feel relieved. It’s like something I have been holding inside is finally released when I smashed those bottles,” Genta Kalbu Tanjung, a 20-year-old university student, told AFP as blaring rock music pulsated in the background. Tanjung and her two friends paid 125,000 rupiah ($8.85) each to unleash their pent-up rage at the Temper Clinic, which also lets clients bust up old televisions and printers for a slightly higher price. Inside a bare smash room, one wall is covered with a written reminder: “Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” Aliya Dewayanti Senoajie wanted to use the students’ half-hour session to channel her frustrations as a school holiday quickly comes to an end. “The break is over -- it was too short and I’m not ready to go back to school,” Senoajie said, declaring her bust-it-up session a success. “It was really fun. My adrenaline was pumping.” The clinic opened last summer in a posh Jakarta neighbourhood after co-owner Masagus Yusuf Albar returned from an overseas holiday where he saw similar businesses sprouting up. The first dedicated space for such destruction therapy opened in Japan in 2008, with a view to helping stressed salarymen relieve their pent up frustrations. It has spread in popularity and temper clinics, also known as rage rooms, can be found in most key US and European cities. The trend has taken off in Asia in the past two years with similar ventures opening in China, Singapore, and Hong Kong. But the service might not immediately make sense for a place like Indonesia -- its citizens regularly rank high among the world’s leaststressed people. That wasn’t lost on Albar, who conceded that life in places like Bali or jungle-clad Sumatra was pretty relaxed. But not so in Jakarta, a city of 10 million plus with hours-long traffic jams that can drive the most patient mad and where school and work are becoming increasingly competitive. A 2017 survey done by dry cleaning firm Zipjet found Jakarta was one of the world’s most stressful cities based on criteria including traffic, air and noise pollution and unemployment. “Try to go anywhere on Friday night and it’s very annoying. My friend once got caught in the traffic and she ended up crying. That’s how bad it was,” Albar told AFP. “Customers find this cathartic,” he said. But smashing things up to let off steam is not necessarily risk free, warned Jakarta-based psychologist Liza Marielly Djaprie. She suggested that regularly using such rooms could simply condition the body to need an aggressive release whenever tensions rise. Djaprie explained: “I don’t usually encourage patients to destroy things just so it won’t become a habit. We need to learn about our anger -- and anger management.” (afp)

North and South united into a youthful nation that now has 95 million people, and in the mid-1980s the country embraced global trade, starting its rise as a production base for South Korea’s Samsung and many other manufacturing giants. The “Doi Moi” reforms adopted by its communist rulers, modeled largely on China’s transformation into the world’s factory floor, could be a model for North Korea. GOING FOR GROWTH: The Vietnamese economy expanded at an estimated annual rate of just
above 7 percent in 2018, fueled by a double-digit increase in manufacturing output. At 5.54 quadrillion Vietnamese dong ($238 billion in 2017), its GDP ranks in the world’s top 50 economies. As the economy has grown, poverty rates have fallen and life expectancy has risen, to 76 years. SAMSUNG FACTOR: Heavy investment by South Korea’s Samsung Electronics, the world’s biggest maker of computer chips and cellphones, led commitments by other big global manufacturers like Microsoft and Intel. Samsung opened
Vietnam’s first mobile phone plant in 2009 and now employs more than 100,000 people in its factories there. In 2017, the company accounted for more than a quarter of Vietnam’s total exports. Samsung had no comment on speculation that Kim might visit one of its factories outside the capital, Hanoi, where he is to meet with Trump. EXPORT BONANZA: By joining the World Trade Organization and regional groupings including the Pacific Rim accord called the Trans-Pacific Partnership, Vietnam has leapfrogged its neighbors in taking advantage of lowered tariffs, and its exports have soared. In the meantime, manufacturers from South Korea, Japan and China have crowded in to take advantage of
lower costs and other incentives. Exports surged to $214 billion in 2017, up by more than a fifth from the year before. The U.S. is Vietnam’s largest export market, at nearly $42 billion in 2017. It’s not all cellphones: Vietnam’s main exports also include electronics, shoes and apparel. CHALLENGES: Having just barely reached middle-income status, Vietnam is struggling to raise productivity — the key to ensuring living standards will continue to improve. Economists say the country’s productivity is only about a third of China’s and much lower than in affluent countries. Heavy reliance on export-led growth leaves the country vulnerable to global downturns. Vietnamese
leaders also have emulated China in keeping a tight grip on the media, political dissent and other freedoms. Rural poverty, pollution and corruption are serious concerns, and like its huge neighbor to the north, Vietnam is struggling to revamp state-dominated industries that are a legacy of the earlier era of central planning. Oarfish live between 200 and 1,000 metres below the surface of the Pacific and the Indian Oceans and have serpentine bodies with red fins that give them a dragon-like appearance. Japanese folklore has it that they move to shallower seas before underwater earth-
quakes, possibly due to electromagnetic changes that occur with tectonic activity. Local media reported that a spate of sightings preceded the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that left about 18,500 dead or missing in northeast Japan, strengthening the myth. The recent oarfish discoveries have sparked renewed debate on social media about impending doom, although scientists dispute such claims. “They looked mysterious and beautiful,” Satomi Higa of the Yomitan’s fisheries cooperative association told the Okinawa Times. “They looked like real dragons.” Although rarely caught in fishing nets, six oarfish were recently captured or found beached in Toyama on the western shores of central Japan. India says many militants ‘eliminated’ in anti-Pakistan air strike
NEW DELHI - India said Tuesday its warplanes attacked a militant camp where Pakistanbacked fighters were preparing suicide attacks on its cities, sending tensions between the arch-rivals to a new peak. A “very large number” of militants from the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) group were killed in the nightime attack, according to the foreign ministry, while Pakistan said its fighter jets scrambled to force the Indian jets back and that there were no casualties. The escalation came after a February 14 suicide bombing claimed by JeM that killed 40 troops in Indian Kashmir, setting off a chain of threats and counter-warnings between the nuclear-armed neighbours. “A very large number of Jaishe-Mohammad terrorists, trainers, senior commanders and groups
of jihadis who were being trained for fidayeen (suicide) action were eliminated,” Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said. “Credible intelligence was received that JeM was attempting another suicide terror attack in various parts of the country,” he told a press conference in New Delhi, describing the threat as “imminent”. Foldable phone outlook hinges on price
BARCELONA - Handset makers are racing to launch their first smartphones with folding screens but analysts warn the technology is still too rudimentary -- and expensive -- to woo consumers in large numbers for now. Samsung, the world’s biggest seller of smartphones, unveiled a handset that folds open like a book to be a tablet at an event in San Francisco on Wednesday, becoming the first major manufacturer to offer the long-awaited feature. China’s Huawei, the world’s second biggest smartphone seller, immediately followed in its footsteps and presented its own phone with a folding screen -- the Mate X -- on Sunday at an event in Barcelona on the start of the Mobile World Congress trade fair. The Mate X’s screen wraps around the outside so users can still view it when it’s closed, unlike the Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, which has a screen that folds shut. Huawei’s foldable phone will sell for 2,299 euros ($2,600) when it goes on sale by midyear, even more than Samsung’s which is priced starting at $1,980 (1,745 euros). The audience at both events gasped when the prices of the devices were announced. China’s Xiaomi, South Korea’s LG and other handsets makers have said they are working on phones with foldable screens of their own. Foldable handsets represent a significant break with the dominant shape smartphones have taken since Steve Jobs introduced the world to the iPhone in 2007 -- a dark black rectangle with a single

Handset makers hope foldable phones will help revive smartphone sales. Global smartphone shipments fell 4.1 percent in 2018 to a total of 1.4 billion as people hold on to their phones longer due to a lack of new features, according to research firm IDC. But Ben Wood, an analyst at tech research consultancy CCS Insight, said the appeal of foldable phones would be limited for now to “gadget lovers” who want the latest tech. “This right now looks like a solution looking for a problem. Most consumers will look at it right now and go ‘it is very, very expensive’. It is kind of an early stage product. I think we are kind of in the Stone Age of the flexible device,” he said. CCS Insight predicts foldable phones will remain a niche category until 2022. Aside from its steep price tag, problems with the devices include poor readability in sunlight, and a bulky design needed to protect the screen’s fold, according to the research firm. - Durable? -
Analysts have also expressed concerns over the durability of the
devices since folds are typically areas where problems are most likely to develop in electronic devices over time. “Generally the trend has been to have a design that does not have any mechanical elements in a smartphone to make them more durable,” said Ian Fogg, a senior mobile industry analyst at OpenSignal, which collects and analyses data from mobile networks. Both Samsung and Huawei said their devices can withstand the wear-and-tear of over 100,000 folds. Analysts also questioned if the phones will work as well when they are folded up as when they are unfolded. IDC senior analyst Ryan Reith said he was sceptical that smartphones with foldable screens will work well since apps will need to be “tweaked” to ensure that they work on the smaller screen when the phone is folded up “It needs to make sure that there is seamless switch from one (screen) to the other. There is a lot of work that has to come with that,” said Reith. Research firm Strategy Analytics forecasts global sales of just 1.2 million foldable phones this year, which will rise to around 64.9 million phones in 2023 -- just 3.5 percent of projected global smartphone sales that year. New triple-antenna transceivers can help boost the signal, but what do you do about people who aren’t wearing any kind of transceiver? “We are working on thermal and multispectral systems that can see gases such as methane and carbon dioxide and could also detect people buried in mud slides, or under rubble,” explains Jean-Yves Barman, chief executive of software developer SCS Smart City Swiss. But finding people is one thing, digging them out is another. And no drones can yet do the digging. This is where dogs, fellow skiers and rescue teams are needed. “The goal is to find them and dig them out as fast as you can,” Mr Schniewind says. “That’s why most people who survive are saved by their companions rather than by organised rescue missions.” Other technologies come in. Some skiwear is now fitted with so-called Recco reflectors that bounce back a directional signal to mountain rescue teams equipped with a Recco detector. Roland Georges, president of the high mountain guides office in the French resort of Courchevel, says: “All the guides in Courchevel have Recco reflectors in their ski gear. However, it takes time to raise an alert and get a helicopter out.” Mr Georges believes drones could also become indispensible for mountain guides heading off the beaten track. “Having seen how small and quick to activate drones can be, I would not be surprised if all guides are soon carrying one,” he says. But for off-piste skiing fans, lured by the thrill of carving their own tracks through fresh powder snow, it’s an ever-present risk. More than 150 people - mostly skiers, snowboarders and snowmobilers - are killed in avalanches every year, according to National Geographic statistics. This month alone, there have been deaths in Switzerland, Italy, Canada and North America. Drone manufacturers claim UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) could slash the toll by finding victims faster, and allowing ski patrollers to clear snow on high-risk slopes using explosives - without endangering themselves. Some mountain rescue services claim drones reduce their search times by up to 50%, because a drone can scan a large avalanche site more quickly than a person on foot. And when it comes to avalanches, time is of the essence. More than 90% of people buried by avalanches survive if dug out within 15 minutes. But after 45 minutes, the odds of survival drop to about 20%. Suffocation is the main cause of death. “Once you’re trapped, you can’t move, even if you’re only under 10cm (4in) of snow, and carbon dioxide quickly builds up around your mouth,” says avalanche expert Henry Schniewind. For someone in this situation, the best hope of rescue is currently an avalanche transceiver. Worn under your jacket, these hand-sized radio devices emit a low-power pulsed signal when activated. They can also be switched to receive mode, allowing those skiing with avalanche victims to pinpoint the area where the signal is strongest, then use probes and shovels to dig them out. Two foreign tourists lost while climbing Mount Agung
AMLAPURA - Two tourists from Russia, namely Djima, 30, and Arcer, 34, were lost when carrying out climbing activities to the summit of Mount Agung. They both were lost because they did not know the way to go down. To get to the foot of the mountain, they followed the river channel in Mount Agung. A member of Commission II at the Bali House of Representatives, AA Ngurah Adhi Ardhana, said the governor regulation, one of the contents, requires supermarket to buy and sell food crops, horticulture and plantations as well as farms at least 60 percent of the total volume of products marketed. It is worried this will result in problems when local farmers cannot provide a minimum supply of 60 percent. The governor regulation is likely to be violated by bringing in supplies from outside Bali, but recognized as a local product. “It will become a separate problem, other than certainty of the origin of the local product itself that may be in single trade chain, there are distributors claiming the products of outside Bali are also local ones,” he explained. Previously, the Head of the
Bali Food Crops, Horticulture and Plantation Agency, Ida Bagus Wisnuardhana, stated the Governor Regulation 99 mainly regulates the trade system for agricultural commodities, livestock, fisheries and industries of local Bali. Especially for agriculture, the commodity meant is not only fruits but also food crops, horticulture, and plantations. The regulation also governs the matter of quality and continuity. “Of course, the users like restaurants, catering companies and supermarkets are expected to adjust to the conditions of the season in the field. On that account, some of our fruit products of seasonal in nature should be adjusted to the conditions of the season by the users,” he added. However, Wisnuardhana continued that his agency can guarantee that products will be available throughout the year. It has set a
commodity region, where districts and municipality have their own superior products such as melons and watermelons in Negara (Jembrana), mangosteen in Tabanan, mango at Depeha (Buleleng) or dragon fruit from Buleleng. Furthermore, mapping will be the tasks of the Coordination Team in which has working groups. “Certainly, one of the tasks of the working group is to carry out mapping where the product is available in how many numbers and when they are available, including the team’s task later is to compile the cost of production per unit of weight,” he explained. According to Wisnuardhana, compilation of the production costs per unit of weight is related to the purchase price of farmers’ products under the Governor Regulation that is set forth at 20 percent above the production cost. Spike Lee: channelling America’s black rage
NEW YORK - For more than 30 years, Spike Lee has captivated audiences -- and sometimes angered them -- with his provocative, frank depictions of black America infused with his signature mix of entertainment, activism and rage. And for the first time, that work has earned him a competitive Oscar as the 61-year-old Lee picked up the prize for best adapted screenplay on Sunday for his incendiary race drama “BlacKkKlansman.” “Four hundred years. Our ancestors were stolen from Mother Africa and bought to Jamestown, Virginia, enslaved,” he said, referring the first documented Africans to come to the first English settlement in the Americas, in 1619. It was a rousing impromptu address, delivered from the stage at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, during which Lee spoke of slaves forced to carry out back-breaking work from dawn until dark. He paid tribute to his grandmother, who “lived to be 100 years young, who was a Spelman College graduate even though her mother was a slave.”
“BlacKkKlansman” is a searing yet sometimes hilarious broadside against racism with the strangerthan-fiction true story of an African-American police officer who managed to infiltrate the highest levels of the Ku Klux Klan. John David Washington, son of Denzel, stars as that cop, Ron Stallworth. Oscar nominee Adam Driver plays his white partner, who acts as his proxy for the actual undercover operation. “Six words: ‘Black man infiltrates Ku Klux Klan’,” Lee told CBS News earlier this month of the film pitch. “That was it. That was it. The greatest ever. Six words!” Lee has inspired other black directors for decades. Michael Genet, an actor and screenwriter who penned the script for Lee’s 2004 comedy “She Hate Me,” says Lee “opened the doors for everybody who’s come after him.” African-American director Ryan Coogler “couldn’t be who he is today with ‘Black Panther’ without Spike Lee doing what he did,” Genet adds. “It’s impossible.” (afp)

The royal couple, on their last official foreign tour before becoming parents, petted horses and strolled hand in hand through the equestrian club in Sale in the outskirts of Rabat. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as they are formally known, met disabled young people grooming horses, and heard how spending time with the animals helps them face their challenges. Meghan chatted with Zakaria, a 20-year-old with mobility issues who become an IT instructor with the help of equine therapy, 24-yearold Driss, who has speech difficulties, and Ikram, a 19-year-old with Down syndrome. The royal couple, who married last
year, appeared relaxed as they stroked horses poking their heads out of the stable doors in the morning sunshine. Kim hits the road in Hanoi ahead of Trump nuclear summit
Kim Jong Un arrived in Hanoi to throngs of cheering crowds and curious onlookers Tuesday, on the eve of a second summit with Donald Trump the world is closely watching for tangible progress over North Korea’s nuclear programme. After an initial historic meeting in Singapore in June that produced only a vague statement about denuclearisation, analysts say the second date must deliver more concrete steps towards dismantling Pyongyang’s arsenal. The normally sleepy Vietnamese border station of Dong Dang spruced itself up for Kim’s arrival after the young leader’s 4,000-kilometre (2,500-mile), two-and-a-half-day odyssey through China aboard his olive green train. A military guard of honour in pristine white uniforms presented
arms as Kim strolled down the red carpet waving and grinning, surrounded by a phalanx of aides and security personnel. Local official Hoang Thi Thuy said she had waited in the cold rain since before dawn for a glimpse of Kim, the first North Korean leader to visit fellow one-party state Vietnam since his grandfather Kim Il Sung in 1964. “I was so excited when we were told to stand in place for the arrival of the train,” she told AFP. “We saw the leader from afar. I felt so happy,
it’s hard to describe.” Wearing his trademark Maostyle black suit and flanked by his troops of bodyguards, Kim was ushered into a waiting MercedesBenz and his motorcade rolled off towards Hanoi, where armoured personnel carriers patrolled the roads amid ultra-tight security. He was greeted in Hanoi by cheering crowds behind barriers near the colonial-era pastel yellow Hanoi Opera House before arriving at the Melia hotel where he was expected to stay this week.
After a few hours’ rest, he then departed his hotel for the North Korean embassy in Hanoi, echoing the summit in Singapore where he took in the sights on an unscheduled sortie. Trump was taking a more conventional route on Air Force One to the meeting and was expected to arrive in Hanoi late Tuesday. He tweeted he was looking forward to a “very productive” second summit. The US president again dangled the carrot of economic progress for North Korea if it gives up its nuclear programme. “With complete Denuclearization, North Korea will rapidly become an Economic Powerhouse,” tweeted Trump. “Without it, just more of the
same.” “Chairman Kim will make a wise decision!” Relations between the two mercurial leaders have undergone a dramatic turnaround, from flinging personal insults and threats of destruction to Trump declaring he had fallen “in love” with Kim through an exchange of letters.
