Kanye West unveils photo of baby on TV’s ‘Kris’ Baby North West has made her television debut. Kanye West showed a photo Friday of his 2-month-old daughter with Kim Kardashian on Kris Jenner’s Fox show, “Kris.” The family matriarch also posted an image of her granddaughter on Twitter.

Though cameras constantly follow the Kardashian clan, this is the first time the newest member of the family has been publicly unveiled. The photo shows a brown-haired baby reaching toward the camera.

West also discussed fatherhood and his relationship with Kardashian. He called her “my joy” and said “she brought my new joy into the world.”

But he acknowledged being a new dad in the spotlight isn’t easy.

“I’m supposed to be this musical genius and everything,” he said, “but I really can’t work the car seat that well.”

He said parenting has brought him and Kardashian closer because “there’s someone more important to us than us for the first time.”

Actor Alec Baldwin and his wife have given birth to a baby girl in New York. Hilaria Baldwin tweeted the news from her verified Twitter account Friday night. She says the family is overjoyed and that Carmen Gabriela “is absolutely perfect.”

The former “30 Rock” star already is the father of a 17-year-old daughter, Ireland, from his previous marriage to actress Kim Basinger.

Hilaria Baldwin is a special correspondent for the TV show “Extra.”

The couple wed last June after a three-month engagement.

On her verified Twitter account, Ireland Baldwin welcomed her new sister into the world and linked to a blog post with 10 pieces of advice for the newborn.

An agent for Alec Baldwin and a publicist have not returned requests for comment.

APEC Summit, airport closed for 3 days

Implementation of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit held early October in Bali would suspend the Ngurah Rai International airport operation for commercial aircrafts. The airport closure would last for 3 days, namely on October 6, 8 and 9. This statement was made by the National Committee of the APEC Summit, Ministry of Communications and Informatics, Ahmed Kurnia, in Nusa Dua, Saturday (Aug 24).

He said the closure did not last for 24 hours, but in accordance with the schedule of flight arrivals of the delegates and heads of state

that would attend the APEC Summit. As scheduled, the closing on October 6 would start from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Meanwhile, on

October 8 the closing would last for 7 hours from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on October 9, the closing for commercial aircraft would be from 07:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

“This temporary closure is only implemented based on the schedule agreed. Beyond the schedule, general aviation can arrive and depart from the Ngurah Rai Airport in accordance with the schedule specified,” he said.

He said the government had made coordination related to the

airport closure and socialization.

Thus, he was optimistic that undesirable things would not happen because his party had disseminated the information far in advance to the airlines companies, ticket sales agency and travel agency “We hope this information can be known to the public so as not to travel ahead of the schedule specified, especially for the aircraft making transit in Bali because Bali is also a transit point for the destinations in eastern Indonesia,”

he said.

Meanwhile, for tourists and people that had made a reservation of airline tickets coinciding with the schedules were expected to confirm directly to the ticket agency or related parties.

The casting of Hollywood A-lister Ben Affleck as the new Batman sparked fan outrage Friday, with petitions calling for the coveted role to be recast and widespread howling on Twitter.

Warner Bros. announced Thursday that Affleck -- who earlier this year was the darling of Tinseltown when his “Argo” took home the Oscar for best picture -- would next don the Dark Knight’s cape.

Affleck’s debut as the savior of Gotham will come in a film slated for release in 2015, and also to feature Henry Cavill as Superman. Zack Snyder is to direct.

The Batman recast is not the first. Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney and, most recently, Christian Bale, have all played the role.

But fans cried foul, with more than 20,000 people signing a petition at change.org calling on Warner Bros. to ditch the 41-year-old star.

“His acting skill is not even close to being believable as Bruce Wayne and he won’t do the role justice. He’s not built, nor is he intimidating enough for the role of Batman,” the petition says.

“His portrayal of Daredevil was atrocious and he’s not remotely close to an action star. Please find someone else.”

Another petition was posted on the White House website for several hours before being removed.

On Twitter, the hashtag #BetterBatmanThanBenAffleck was trending. Many Internet users proposed other actors, from Josh Brolin to Affleck pal Matt Damon to -- bizarrely -- Meryl Streep.

Culprit disposes kris of Rambut Siwi Temple to the sea Reconstruction of the sanctified effigy (pratima) theft in a number of temples in Jembrana on Friday (Aug 23) was tightly guarded by police.

Allegedly, the culprits committed the action in six temples such as in the Bujangga Sakti Temple, Subak Temple, Dalem Temple, Manggisari village (Pekutatan subdistrict), Rambutsiwi Temple (Mendoyo) and Indrakusuma Temple and Dalem Temple (Melaya). The reconstruction made in marathon got a minor incident.

A number of residents in the Bujangga Sakti Temple having been waiting to watch the reconstruction were annoyed. The culprit, Abdul Rozak, 52, when getting out of the car, he was about to be hit by the

people having been waiting for him.

The residents looked like in a halfconscious state and were about to hit the culprit. The effort of residents could be prevented by Pekutatan Police officers alerted at the location. Later on, the reconstruction could be performed. At least 25 scenes were undertaken in tree temples in Pekutatan. In the theft, the culprit committed the crimes with his friend with initials AHM but was still at large.

Subsequent reconstruction was continued to Rambutsiwi Temple at Yehembang Kangin village, Mendoyo. Here was revealed if the culprit committed the action with his friend, named AHM. Police prepared a stuntman played by Mendoyo Police officer. Chief of

the Criminal Detective Unit of Jembrana Police, Aris Purwanto with IB Sudarsana also witnessed the reconstruction in the Rambutsiwi Temple.

Here were performed 17 scenes from the coming of the culprit to the action of stealing in the temple. The culprits parked the Honda Vario motorcycle at some distance from the temple. Then, they jumped over the eastern temple compound wall.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Dreamers work to create huge new park in Delhi Associated Press Writer

NEW DELHI — In a tangle of forgotten, overgrown brush in the heart of India’s capital, a quiet plan has been hatched to change the landscape of one of the world’s most populous cities.

An intricate Mughal garden is being created. Crumbling sandstone tombs nearly lost to history are being rebuilt. An artificial lake is being carved out. The renovation of Sunder Nursery is intended to serve as the catalyst for an even more ambitious project: the creation of a mammoth, iconic park that would rival New York’s Central Park as a refuge from urban chaos.

“It would be the place where the city descends. It would be an oasis,” said Ratish Nanda, project director for the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, and the driving force behind the dream of a mega-park.

To create that park would require the merger of a string of adjoining gardens, heritage areas and a zoo administered by different government agencies, an incredibly complicated task in a land where bureaucratic turfs are fiercely protected. And though some officials are beginning to discuss the plan, no formal proposal has been formulated.

But sometimes in India, it takes tenacious dreamers like Nanda to achieve the seemingly impossible.

Nanda and the Aga Khan Trust have taken on seemingly impossible tasks before. They helped wrest a 17 acre compound in the area, along with a large monument, from India’s version of the Boy Scouts. They are currently fighting with railways officials to get them to remove a storeroom blocking access to another monument. “One single man has to be there, to strive, to go out and achieve this,” said Ashok Khurana, a powerful supporter and the recently retired head of Delhi’s Central Public Works Department, one of the many agencies that would need to work together to create the giant park.

The payoff would be considerable. Delhi, with a population of about 17 million, is a surprisingly green city, with small parks dotting many neighborhoods and Lodhi Gardens — with a clutch of crumbling monuments of its own — attracting speed walkers and picnickers in upscale south Delhi. The mega-park would tower over them all. It would be 480 hectares (1,200 acres).

Geopark, exploitation amidst conservation

Bangli government was expected to be more focused on the geopark area management. By a year of the Mount Batur rocky area set by the UNESCO, the presence of the geopark had so far not considered to give significant contribution to the welfare of society. Besides, the government should also be more focused. If it really wanted to perform the conservation, the exploitation should be more disciplined. It was revealed by Deputy Chairman of the Bangli House, I Made Sudiasa.

According to him, the geopark previously directed to become a spearhead for people’s welfare indeed retained its own dilemma.

The geopark area that should be protected as a terrestrial park of the Mount Batur caldera on the other side was massively exploited such as by the sand mining (quarry C).

For the communities around the quarry, it was one of the sources of their prosperity. “Since the very beginning, the geopark was directed to become a spearhead for the welfare of community but it then resulted in a dilemma. Originally, there has been indeed a quarry area at the geopark region having be-

come the source of prosperity for lower class community,” he said.

This politician from Undisan village added if the government would like to discipline the sand mining activity it should also be coupled with the provision of substitute job opportunities for local people. Besides, in response to the

previous information mentioning if in the geopark region would also be equipped with tourism facilities such as golf courses, said Sudiasa, it obviously opposed to the conservation efforts. Indirectly, establishment of the golf course would exploit the protected areas.

In this case, Sudiasa judged the government seemed to have not focused. “If choosing the geopark, please go on. If it’s a part of the potential to be developed or exploited, please review it first. If it is aimed at improving the people’s welfare, the government should

take a decision by taking one of two choices,” he said.

BEIJING — China says the number of Japanese tourists visiting Beijing fell by more than half in the first six months of the year amid a spike in tensions between the countries.

Beijing’s statistics bureau said Sunday that 136,000 Japanese tourists visited the capital between January and July. That was down 53.7 percent from the same period last year.

The drop follows violent anti-Japanese protests in Beijing and several other Chinese cities in September in response to complaints from the government over Japan’s move to nationalize uninhabited East China Sea islands claimed by China. Japanese businesses were torched and Japanesebrand cars were smashed despite their having been locally made.

There were also scattered reports of assaults on Japanese citizens, although none of the attacks were serious. a panda expert from China who specializes in newborns to help out. Two of the zoo’s panda keepers have also recently spent time in China learning more about examining newborns.

Officials made a first, unsuccessful attempt at examining the cub Saturday morning and planned to try again later in the day.

Information collected during the

exam will serve as a baseline for future exams, planned when the cub is 3 days old and 5 days old.

And the DNA sample, either from a swab of the cub’s mouth or feces, will be used to determine the cub’s father. Mei Xiang was artificially inseminated both with sperm from the zoo’s male panda, Tian Tian, as well as a male panda at the San Diego zoo, Gao Gao.

A businessman dies after burning home and business premises Gianyar (Bali Post)—

I Ketut Raja, 60, a woodcarving businessman from Kengetan hamlet, Singakerta village, Ubud, was found dead with foaming mouth in the rice field area of Subak Abian Tiying, Singakerta. Allegedly, Ketut Raja committed suicide after burning his home and business premises, Friday morning (Aug 23).

It was unknown for sure the reasons of the culprit to burn his home and business premises he established. However, based on information from local residents, he previously had an argument with his wife and son on Thursday night (Aug 22) around 19:00 p.m. After that, on Friday morning at 1:20 a.m. both houses and garage with a car were found to have burned down.

In addition, his business premise receiving the woodcarving orders and a shop rented to an Indian who produced candles were also burned down and so was the motorcycle.

Due to the incident, local residents beat wooden split drum continuously, marking the fire incident in customary bylaw. Trucks of Gianyar Fire Brigade were deployed to extinguish the fire at his home.

However, amidst the blackouts conducted, the residents and officials were surprised by the fire occurred at his business premise. The fire at

two different locations made the Fire Brigade overwhelmed. Therefore, the help was brought in from the Badung Fire Brigade.

The Division Head of Emergency, the Gianyar Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Wayan Gde Eka Putra, said the fire was extinguished around 06:00 a.m. after 6 units of trucks of the Gianyar Fire Brigade extinguished the fire at his home and 15 truck tanks of the Gianyar and Badung Fire Brigade extinguished the fire at the business premises.

After the fire was extinguished, the residents of Singakerta spread to search for the culprit. Ultimately, the culprit was found lying dead in the rice field belonging to Wayan Taram by Ketut Sukanada. Then, the finding was informed to Suana and other residents.

JINAN, China - Fallen Chinese politician Bo Xilai on Sunday sought to discredit his former top aide as a lying, unreliable witness as the ousted leader denied criminal responsibility in the country’s messiest political scandal in decades.

Courtroom revelations in the politically charged trial have already exposed the unraveling of one of China’s elite families, with Bo calling his wife “crazy” after she testified against him and saying she took their son abroad in fury after he had been unfaithful.

Bo told the Jinan Intermediate People’s Court Sunday that his former right-hand man “was a person of very vile quality who first, lied in court, and secondly, muddied the waters.”

At the close of Sunday morning’s hearing, the court said all evidence had been presented and that the trial was adjourned till Monday.

The ruling Communist Party is us-

ing the trial against Bo to cap a major political scandal unleashed last year when his aide fled to a U.S. consulate bearing revelations that Bo’s wife had killed a British businessman.

That scandal led to Bo’s ouster as Politburo member and party leader of the southern megacity of Chongqing, making him the most senior leader to fall from power in years. His purge is being cemented by criminal charges of abusing his power by interfering in the murder investigation and trying to hide the defection, as well as netting $4.3 million through corruption.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says many of the 5,000 students who paid up to $35,000 thought they would at least meet Trump but instead all they got was their picture taken in front of a life-size picture of “The Apprentice” TV star.

“Trump University engaged in deception at every stage of consumers’ advancement through costly programs and caused real financial harm,” Schneiderman said. “Trump University, with Donald Trump’s knowledge and participation, relied on Trump’s name recognition and celebrity status to take advantage of consumers who believed in the Trump brand.”

A spokeswoman for Trump did not immediately return a request for comment Saturday.

NEW DELHI — Police on Sunday arrested the last of five men wanted in the gang rape of a photojournalist in Mumbai, and said charges would be filed soon in a case that has incensed the public and fueled debate over whether women can be safe in India.

The victim, a 22-year-old Indian woman, said she was anxious to return to work after Thursday night’s assault, in which five men repeatedly raped her while her male colleague was beaten and tied up in an abandoned textile mill in the country’s financial capital.

JACKSON HOLE, Wyoming — The head of the International Monetary Fund cautioned the world’s major central banks Friday not to withdraw their unconventional support for weak economies too soon.

IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said stimulative policies are still needed in key regions, especially Europe and Japan, which have struggled with prolonged weakness.

She spoke at an annual economics conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, sponsored by the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank.

Lagarde said central banks must carefully develop strategies for scaling back their efforts to keep borrowing rates low. Any pullback should be determined by the strength of individual economies, she said.

Her comments come as the Fed is signaling that it could slow its bond purchases later this year if the U.S. economy continues to improve. The Fed’s bond buying has helped keep

U.S. interest rates near record lows.

“Unconventional monetary policy is still needed in all places it is being used, albeit longer for some than for others,” Lagarde said in her speech to the conference.

The anticipation of a slowdown in Fed bond buying has unsettled U.S. stock and bond markets and sent interest rates up. Rising U.S. rates have, in turn, triggered turmoil in some emerging economies, such as Turkey, India and Indonesia. Officials in those countries have tried to halt declines in the value of their currencies as investors have shifted money into higheryielding investments elsewhere.

Lagarde noted the market declines that have followed Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke’s signal in June that the Fed could begin slowing its bond purchases later this year if the U.S.

economy strengthens further.

She said finance officials should prepare contingency plans in case market turbulence worsens.

Some investors think the Fed could announce at its next meeting in September that it’s reducing its bond purchases.

But comments from Fed officials at Jackson Hole suggested some disagreement within the central bank over the proper timing for a slowdown to begin.

Dennis Lockhart, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, suggested in an interview with CNBC that he might be ready to endorse a bond-buying slowdown in September.

But James Bullard, president of the St. Louis Fed, said he thought the economy remains too uncertain for a pullback next month.

In a separate interview, Bullard said the decision on whether to start tapering could well come into focus just a few days before the Sept. 1718 meeting if Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke decides at that time to provide the other policymakers with a recommendation.

The Secretary of Bali chapter PHRI Ferry Markus on Wednesday mentioned that previously his association and Bali Police carry on a security verification to the 26 hotels in Nusa Dua, Tanjung Benoa, Uluwatu, Jimbaran and Tanah Lot, Tabanan. However, from the number mentioned 10 of them did not meet the security qualification. Five of them located in BTDC area.

“From 13 hotels which located in Nusa Dua and surrounding areas, five of them are still not eligible,” he said.

He revealed that the security verification requirements do not only about the property and human security, but also a thorough security including the transactions security, information and data security, name and image security, as well as security in a number of relevant departments including the food department. Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika calls all the hotels management in Bali, especially in Nusa Dua, Badung District to monitor the security towards the APEC Summit.

“We are concern to the security and please do not underestimate it or take some risks. If the security is not good enough, it is possible the whole preparations for the APEC will be in vain,” Pastika said.

He also asked the police department to provide guidance about the security to the hotels management, especially which located in Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC) area in Nusa Dua, as the main location of APEC Summit. astika also urged to all parties to provide good services during the big event which to be attended by 21 heads of state and governments along with thousands of delegates and journalists from around the world.

“There will be tens thousands of people from around the world to come. We have to provide a better service so they would tell their friends and family when they come back home later. This event is a free promotion as well, we just have to provide a good service to give a good impression,” he said.

The performing art poses a dance-drama whose artists should master the elements of dance, music and vocal. A troupe is supported by tens of artists. words, they have superior talent, so that every performance can draw the attention of spectators.

In this session, the performing area will usually turn magical, horrific and creepy. If the dancers have come into trance, the stabbers will stab themselves with the kris dagger. The more horrific atmosphere happens when living players are given a mantra and then act as a dead person (corpse). Afterward, the body is consecrated (as in cremation). Then, they are taken to cemetery. Mystical atmosphere is strongly felt in the show at this scene.

Calonarang is indeed a special performing art that cannot be staged arbitrarily. However, after the development of tourism, the Calonarang is also staged for tourist entertainment. However, time and type of ceremony is not made specifically. AA Gde Raka, a religious philosopher, said the Calonarang dance-drama was actually a ritual event where the sanctified effigies in the form of Rangda and Barong venerated were taken down and danced. The Calonarang itself was performed on the piodalan (temple anniversary) in the Dalem Temple and other temples. Players getting involved in the Calonarang attraction were those specifically having high spiritual knowledge and the arts.

According to him, the story of Calonarang was inseparable from the concept of rwa bhineda or basic dualism such as the quality

of good and bad being always side by side.

The Calonarang story was taken from a fairy tale on a widow named Walu Nateng Girah from Girah village, Kediri. Walu meant widow, Nateng (Queen) and Girah was the name of a village in Kediri, East Java. Therefore, Walu Nateng Girah meant a widow queen from Girah village. Walu Nateng Girah is a disciple of left school representing the adharma. Meanwhile, the King Airlangga is the follower of goodness representing the dharma. “It has significance that in this life good and bad qualities are inseparable,” he said.

In that struggle, none of Mpu Bharadah and Nateng Girah won symbolizing that good and bad was inseparable. The staging of Calonarang performance was not entertainment art, but due to influence of globalization, many Calonarang performances then led to profane art, too.

According to Gde Raka, the word Calonarang was derived from the word arang meaning the ash related to plague caused by Nateng Girah where the Girah village was like to have been transformed into ashes because many people were sick and died.

Calonarang performance was usually commenced with the presence of barong dance, telek dance and followed by the emergence of young ladies. The next scene told about Walu Nateng Girah and her followers practicing black magic getting involved in a struggle against the forces of King Airlangga belonging to white school. (BTN)

LONDON - Four people have died after a helicopter carrying 18 from an offshore oil platform crashed into the North Sea off Scotland, police said Saturday.

COLUMBIA, South Carolina - A comprehensive encyclopedia of one of the world’s major religions is set to be unveiled next week in the U.S. The 11-volume work covers Hindu spiritual beliefs, practices and philosophy, and is the culmination of a 25-year academic effort.

The encyclopedia is written in English and includes about 7,000 articles on Hinduism and its practices. The work also deals with Indian history, languages, art, music, dance, architecture, medicine, and women’s issues. The entire encyclopedia contains more than 1,000 illustrations and photographs.

Brightly colored images of Hinduism’s deities fill entire pages, with foot-noted explanations of the forms and powers God can take in the religion.

“The goal was to have something pretty definitive - not just about Hinduism, but about the whole South Asian tradition,” said University of South Carolina professor Hal French, who met with a small group of scholars in 1987 to offer academic support for the project.

“This hadn’t really been attempted before,” said French, 83, a distinguished professor emeritus of religious studies at the school and an associate editor. “It is a milestone of research that brought together both Eastern and Western scholarship.”

French, who specializes in the religions of Asia and served as an as-

sociate editor of the encyclopedia, said a primary inspiration for the work is one of India’s most revered spiritual leaders, Swami Chidanand Saraswati, who is coming to the University of South Carolina conference that will celebrate the work’s launch.

Swami Chidanand founded the India Heritage Research Foundation, which became the parent organization behind the encyclopedia effort.

He is president of the Parmarth Niketan Ashram spiritual retreat in Rishikesh, India, and travels to visit with Hindu followers in the United States several times a year.

The encyclopedia’s volumes run from 600 to more than 700 pages.

Some 3,000 copies are being issued in the first printing and will be of interest to libraries, religious institutions, and those studying Indian culture around the world, French said.

Hinduism is the world’s third-largest religion, with 1 billion followers, according to a Pew Research Center study published this year. Christians number 2.2 billion and Muslims 1.6 billion, the study showed.

Hinduism’s basic teaching is that the soul never dies, but is reborn each time

the body dies. The soul may be reborn in human or animal form. The cycle of death and rebirth continues until a soul reaches spiritual perfection, and is united in total enlightenment and peace with the supreme being.

Many Hindus who settled around the world have found that they need a comprehensive source of information on the religion for their children, said Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati, managing editor of the encyclopedia and a secretary of the India Heritage Research Foundation.

Children came home from schools where a teacher may have discussed whether Hinduism is a belief in one god, or many gods, and need the proper background to explain it, Sadhvi Bhagawati said in a telephone interview.

“They wanted a source to go to so they could pass the correct information to their children,” she said.

She explained that the encyclopedia project took more than 20 years because “it began in pre-computer days.” “If we started today, it might just have taken a few years,” said Sadhvi Bhagawati, who describes herself a disciple of Swami Chidanand.

The coastguard agency said it sent helicopters and lifeboats to the scene after receiving a distress signal.

“There appears to have been a catastrophic loss of power which meant the helicopter suddenly dropped into the sea without any opportunity to make a controlled landing,” said Jim Nicholson, a rescue coordinator.

CHC would not speculate on what caused the crash, saying it would cooperate fully with an investigation by police and the British Air Accidents Investigation Branch.

Police in Scotland said three bodies had been recovered, and they were searching for the fourth victim.

Syria’s Opposition Considers National Rebel Army, Islamists Angered Reuters

BEIRUT - Syria’s Westernbacked political opposition plans to create the nucleus of a national army to bring order to the disparate rebel forces battling President Bashar alAssad and counter the strength of al Qaeda-linked rebel brigades.

The latest attempt to unite the rebels coincides with fierce debates in Washington and other Western capitals over whether and how to boost support for Assad’s opponents after an alleged chemical weapons attack by government forces on Wednesday.

Chaos among opposition forces and al-Qaeda’s growing role are barriers to any intervention.

Plans for an army are still under wraps but details began emerging earlier this month before the gas attack. It has the blessing of the rebels’ patron Saudi Arabia, which took over as the main regional backer of Assad’s foes earlier this year.

“It is very serious. It will be a proper army. The future of Syria

depends on this move,” said a senior member of Syria’s opposition National Coalition, which hopes to set up the force.

Momentum behind the new force comes from Saudi Arabia and Western nations who, alarmed by the growth of radical Islamists in rebelheld areas, have thrown their weight behind the Syrian Coalition, hoping it could help stem their power.

“Once we get the (battle)field organised, then everything will be organised,” he said. “This will be the army of the new Syria. We want to integrate its ranks and unify the sources of funding and arms,” the Syrian National Coalition member said.

Saudi Arabia has prevailed over Qatar to impose itself as the main outside force supporting the Syrian rebels, in part to counter the influence of Qatari-backed Islamist militants.

Riyadh has put forward $100 million as preliminary funding for a force planned to be 6,000 to 10,000 strong, rebels say.

Crocodile takes man in Australia Associated Press Writer

A 24-year-old man was snatched by a crocodile in front of at least 15 onlookers as he swam across a northern Australian river with a friend, police said Sunday.

Northern Territory police said the man was with a group celebrating a birthday at the Mary River Wilderness Retreat, about 110 kilometres (70 miles) from Darwin, on Saturday when he decided to plunge into the water.

“They were watching him swim across,” senior sergeant Geoff Bahnert told AFP of the

group. “And they just saw a crocodile with him in its jaws.”

Police conducted a search for the man, but were unsuccessful.

The search was continuing Sunday, Bahnert said, adding that the largest crocodile at the site had been shot and killed as a precaution.

Reports suggested the men had ignored warnings not to swim in the river because of the risk of a crocodile attack.

“We tell people to stay away from the water, they obviously went against this (and) a man was taken,” an employee of the resort, Erin Bayard, told News Corp Australia.

INDONESIA Government curbs luxury car imports as rupiah dives Associated Press

JAKARTA — Indonesia said Friday that it would curb imports of luxury cars and take other steps to bolster national finances as Southeast Asia’s largest economy suffers a slumping currency and stock market.

Indonesia, along with countries such as India, Malaysia and Thailand, has been buffeted by an exodus of cash from its financial markets as improving economic prospects in the U.S and Europe reverse the tide of money that swept into developing nations the past few years.

Among the measures announced Friday, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Hatta Rajasa said the government will relax mineral export quotas and streamline the investment permit process.

He said the government will increase the import tax on luxury cars and some branded products, provide tax incentives for investment in agriculture and metal industries and seek to reduce oil imports.

The moves aim to shore up Indonesia’s currency and bolster confidence that the country can pay its bills by limiting outflows of money and encouraging inflows.

That in theory should reduce Indonesia’s current account deficit, which largely reflects that it is importing more than it exports.

“With these steps, the current account deficit in the third and fourth

quarters is expected to decrease while economic growth could be maintained,” Rajasa said.

The country’s currency, the rupiah, has sunk to its lowest level in over four years. At its lowest point Friday, it traded at 11,020 per U.S. dollar.

The Jakarta Composite Index was flat Friday, after sliding 8.7 percent in the first four days of the week.

Bank Mandiri market analyst Reny Eka Putri said the Indonesian central bank is also expected to intervene to prevent the rupiah from losing more value.

“The volatility of the financial market is quite high and the national currency has tended to weaken,” Putri said. “But Bank Indonesia will protect the currency.”

In another move Friday, Indonesia’s financial services authority, the OJK, eased regulations on share buybacks to help support the local stock market as investors are pulling their funds away from emerging markets on concern that the U.S. Federal Reserve may soon scale back its bond purchases.

Companies will be allowed to buy back stocks when the Jakarta

Composite Index, Indonesia’s main benchmark, sheds at least 15 percent over three sessions.

“In such conditions, companies can buy back shares without shareholders’ approval for up to 20 percent of their stake,” the OJK said in a statement.

Muliaman Hadad, chairman of the OJK, said the move was aimed at lowering market volatility.

In 2011, Indonesia’s economy grew 6.5 percent, which was its fastest growth since the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis. But growth slowed to 5.8 percent in the second quarter of this year.

The country has also experienced rising inflation, which hit 8.6 percent in July, after the government cut fuel subsidies. The unpopular move hiked pump prices by up to 44 percent.

Meanwhile, economic pains are also being felt elsewhere in Asia.

India’s rupee has plummeted to new lows against the dollar on a near daily basis, showing the pressure of a current account deficit that has swelled from high import costs. The Sensex stock index has fallen nearly 10 percent in the past month.

The pageant is already facing opposition in Muslim-majority Indonesia, with radicals vowing to stage protests against the contest even after organisers agreed to drop the bikini round in a bid to avoid causing offence.

The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) added its voice to the protests Friday, saying a top-level meeting of clerics earlier this month decided it did not want the pageant in the country.

“Exposing women’s bodies in public is ‘haram’, forbidden by Islamic teaching,” senior MUI official Muhyiddin Junaidi told reporters in the capital Jakarta.

“Even though the bikini event is being axed, the contestants will still wear tight dresses and expose parts of their body.”

The group also urged the country’s Muslims, more than 90 percent of the 240 million population, not to watch the pageant on television.

“The contest tries to trick people by saying that it’s not only a physical beauty contest but also to show inner beauty,” said deputy MUI head, Amirsyah Tambunan.

Junaidi said that the MUI had now made its position clear, and it was up to authorities whether they decided to cancel the pageant.

While most Indonesians practise a moderate form of Islam, a vocal hardline fringe has succeeded in getting events cancelled in the past.

Last year, pop sensation Lady Gaga axed a concert after hardliners threatened to burn down the venue and criticised her for wearing only “a bra and panties”.

More than 130 women will compete in Miss World, with some rounds on the resort island of Bali and the final in Bogor outside Jakarta. Bogor is in West Java province, parts of which are considered a stronghold for radicals.

Organisers revealed in June that the contestants would not wear bikinis during the beach fashion section, to be held in Bali, and would instead wear more conservative attire such as traditional sarongs.

Halep beats Kvitova to win New Haven Open Associated Press Writer

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut — Simona Halep upset defending champion Petra Kvitova 6-2, 6-2 Saturday to win the New Haven Open, the final WTA tuneup for next week’s U.S. Open. The 21-year-old Romanian broke the 2011 Wimbledon champion in four consecutive service games. The first break gave her a 3-2 lead in the first set. The fourth put her up 3-0 in the second as she took control of the match.

“I played very beautiful tennis today,” Halep said. “I was enjoying every moment.” Kvitova had a chance to take charge early in match, up 2-1 and 15-40 on Halep’s serve. But Halep won the next three points to save that game. She was down 40-30 in the next game before getting her first service break when Kvitova sent a cross-court forehand just wide.

“She played just really good shots in that moment,” Kvitova said. “That was turning the match around, I think.” The Czech star never recovered.

Halep didn’t give her a chance, committing just four unforced errors in the first set and one in the second set. She put in 74 percent of her first serves and won 78 percent of them. She converted four of her five break points. The ninth-ranked Kvitova was 0-for-4 on her break chances. She had 25 unforced errors and won just 32 of the match’s 90 points.

Halep closed the match by holding Kvitova without a point in the final game, serving an ace, dropping her racket and throwing her arms

into the air. “Everything is perfect here,” she said.

Halep earned her fourth career win, but her first in a premiere tournament.

All have come since June. The 23rdranked player improved to 29-5 in her last 34 matches (31-5 counting qualifying matches). Two of her previous wins had come on clay and the other on grass, but she said she actually plays better on the hard courts.

Barboza fell to the canvas following a stunning right hook and had to remove his mouth guard to spit blood as the referee reached the 10 count 2 minutes, 40 seconds into the 10th. Kashtanov improved to 31-1 with 17 knockouts.

Barboza fell to 18-8 with 8 KOs. Kashtanov took the title in November last year by beating Server Yemurlayev of Ukraine by unanimous decision, and this was his first title defense.

The 29-year-old Ukrainian first knocked the 35-year-old Barboza to the canvas with a series of body blows near the end of the seventh round.

Promoted Verona shocks AC Milan; Juve wins opener Associated Press Writer

ROME — Luca Toni scored twice as Hellas Verona beat AC Milan 2-1 Saturday to celebrate its return to Serie A after an 11-year absence as the Italian league opened with a shock.

It was more to form, meanwhile, as Juventus kicked off its bid for a third consecutive title with Carlos Tevez scoring in the 58th minute of a 1-0 win at Sampdoria, which beat the Bianconeri in both league meetings last season.

Juve didn’t quite dominate like in its 4-0 rout of Lazio in last weekend’s Super Cup but Antonio Conte’s men showed the same poise and discipline of the past two seasons.

SHEFFIELD, England — Second-tier English club Millwall looked far from its usual self Saturday after it forgot to bring the team kit for an away game and had to borrow its opponent’s.

Millwall, which normally plays in white on the road, was forced to line up in Sheffield Wednesday’s yellow away kit from last year when the Lions somehow left their

own at home in south London.

Millwall then managed to get its orange third kit to Hillsborough in time for the second half and changed clothes at halftime. The visitors earned a 2-2 draw after Andy Keogh equalized with a late penalty.

Millwall manager Steve Lomas said the kit mishap was “just an honest mistake, I think. These things happen. It just added to the madness of the game.” It was Millwall’s first point in four games.

MADRID - Carlos Vela helped Real Sociedad overcome a European hangover when he grabbed a second-half equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw at promoted Elche in La Liga on Saturday. Valencia, expected to challenge Sociedad for a top-four finish next May, lost 3-1 at Espanyol despite having taken an early lead though Helder Postiga.

In the late kickoff, promoted Villarreal came from behind again to claim a late 2-1 home win over Real Valladolid with a Giovani dos Santos penalty and a spectacular run and shot from Cani.

Sociedad impressed in their 2-0 Champions League playoff first leg win at Olympique Lyonnais in midweek but were second best for much of the game at Elche.

Playing their first home game back in the top-flight, the hosts took the lead after two minutes when a corner flashed across the area and Ferran Corominas stabbed the ball in at the back post.

Sociedad were lucky not to concede again and struggled to get into the game until Elche’s earlier efforts started to take their toll in the second half. A cross from the right found Vela unmarked in the area after 74 minutes and the Mexico forward scuffed a shot inside the far post.

Promoted Verona shocks AC Milan; Juve wins opener Associated Press Writer

ROME — Luca Toni scored twice as Hellas Verona beat AC Milan 2-1 Saturday to celebrate its return to Serie A after an 11-year absence as the Italian league opened with a shock.

It was more to form, meanwhile, as Juventus kicked off its bid for a third consecutive title with Carlos Tevez scoring in the 58th minute of a 1-0 win at Sampdoria, which beat the Bianconeri in both league meetings last season.

Halep beats Kvitova to win New Haven Open Associated Press Writer

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut — Simona Halep upset defending champion Petra Kvitova 6-2, 6-2 Saturday to win the New Haven Open, the final WTA tuneup for next week’s U.S. Open. The 21-year-old Romanian broke the 2011 Wimbledon champion in four consecutive service games. The first break gave her a 3-2 lead in the first set. The fourth put her up 3-0 in the second as she took control of the match.

“I played very beautiful tennis today,” Halep said. “I was enjoying every moment.” Kvitova had a chance to take charge early in match, up 2-1 and 15-40 on Halep’s serve. But Halep won the next three points to save that game. She was down 40-30 in the next game before getting her first service break when Kvitova sent a cross-court forehand just wide.

“She played just really good shots in that moment,” Kvitova said. “That was turning the match around, I think.” The Czech star never recovered.

Halep didn’t give her a chance, committing just four unforced errors in the first set and one in the second set. She put in 74 percent of her first serves and won 78 percent of them. She converted four of her five break points. The ninth-ranked Kvitova was 0-for-4 on her break chances. She had 25 unforced errors and won just 32 of the match’s 90 points.

Halep closed the match by holding Kvitova without a point in the final game, serving an ace, dropping her racket and throwing her arms

into the air. “Everything is perfect here,” she said.

Halep earned her fourth career win, but her first in a premiere tournament.

All have come since June. The 23rdranked player improved to 29-5 in her last 34 matches (31-5 counting qualifying matches). Two of her previous wins had come on clay and the other on grass, but she said she actually plays better on the hard courts.

Barboza fell to the canvas following a stunning right hook and had to remove his mouth guard to spit blood as the referee reached the 10 count 2 minutes, 40 seconds into the 10th. Kashtanov improved to 31-1 with 17 knockouts.

Barboza fell to 18-8 with 8 KOs. Kashtanov took the title in November last year by beating Server Yemurlayev of Ukraine by unanimous decision, and this was his first title defense.

The 29-year-old Ukrainian first knocked the 35-year-old Barboza to the canvas with a series of body blows near the end of the seventh round.

LONDON - Four people have died after a helicopter carrying 18 from an offshore oil platform crashed into the North Sea off Scotland, police said Saturday.

COLUMBIA, South Carolina - A comprehensive encyclopedia of one of the world’s major religions is set to be unveiled next week in the U.S. The 11-volume work covers Hindu spiritual beliefs, practices and philosophy, and is the culmination of a 25-year academic effort.

The encyclopedia is written in English and includes about 7,000 articles on Hinduism and its practices. The work also deals with Indian history, languages, art, music, dance, architecture, medicine, and women’s issues. The entire encyclopedia contains more than 1,000 illustrations and photographs.

Brightly colored images of Hinduism’s deities fill entire pages, with foot-noted explanations of the forms and powers God can take in the religion.

“The goal was to have something pretty definitive - not just about Hinduism, but about the whole South Asian tradition,” said University of South Carolina professor Hal French, who met with a small group of scholars in 1987 to offer academic support for the project.

“This hadn’t really been attempted before,” said French, 83, a distinguished professor emeritus of religious studies at the school and an associate editor. “It is a milestone of research that brought together both Eastern and Western scholarship.”

French, who specializes in the religions of Asia and served as an as-

sociate editor of the encyclopedia, said a primary inspiration for the work is one of India’s most revered spiritual leaders, Swami Chidanand Saraswati, who is coming to the University of South Carolina conference that will celebrate the work’s launch.

Swami Chidanand founded the India Heritage Research Foundation, which became the parent organization behind the encyclopedia effort.

He is president of the Parmarth Niketan Ashram spiritual retreat in Rishikesh, India, and travels to visit with Hindu followers in the United States several times a year.

The encyclopedia’s volumes run from 600 to more than 700 pages.

Some 3,000 copies are being issued in the first printing and will be of interest to libraries, religious institutions, and those studying Indian culture around the world, French said.

Hinduism is the world’s third-largest religion, with 1 billion followers, according to a Pew Research Center study published this year. Christians number 2.2 billion and Muslims 1.6 billion, the study showed.

Hinduism’s basic teaching is that the soul never dies, but is reborn each time

the body dies. The soul may be reborn in human or animal form. The cycle of death and rebirth continues until a soul reaches spiritual perfection, and is united in total enlightenment and peace with the supreme being.

Many Hindus who settled around the world have found that they need a comprehensive source of information on the religion for their children, said Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati, managing editor of the encyclopedia and a secretary of the India Heritage Research Foundation.

Children came home from schools where a teacher may have discussed whether Hinduism is a belief in one god, or many gods, and need the proper background to explain it, Sadhvi Bhagawati said in a telephone interview.

“They wanted a source to go to so they could pass the correct information to their children,” she said.

She explained that the encyclopedia project took more than 20 years because “it began in pre-computer days.” “If we started today, it might just have taken a few years,” said Sadhvi Bhagawati, who describes herself a disciple of Swami Chidanand.

The coastguard agency said it sent helicopters and lifeboats to the scene after receiving a distress signal.

“There appears to have been a catastrophic loss of power which meant the helicopter suddenly dropped into the sea without any opportunity to make a controlled landing,” said Jim Nicholson, a rescue coordinator.

CHC would not speculate on what caused the crash, saying it would cooperate fully with an investigation by police and the British Air Accidents Investigation Branch.

Police in Scotland said three bodies had been recovered, and they were searching for the fourth victim.

BEIRUT - Syria’s Westernbacked political opposition plans to create the nucleus of a national army to bring order to the disparate rebel forces battling President Bashar alAssad and counter the strength of al Qaeda-linked rebel brigades.

The latest attempt to unite the rebels coincides with fierce debates in Washington and other Western capitals over whether and how to boost support for Assad’s opponents after an alleged chemical weapons attack by government forces on Wednesday.

Chaos among opposition forces and al-Qaeda’s growing role are barriers to any intervention.

Plans for an army are still under wraps but details began emerging earlier this month before the gas attack. It has the blessing of the rebels’ patron Saudi Arabia, which took over as the main regional backer of Assad’s foes earlier this year.

“It is very serious. It will be a proper army. The future of Syria

depends on this move,” said a senior member of Syria’s opposition National Coalition, which hopes to set up the force.

Momentum behind the new force comes from Saudi Arabia and Western nations who, alarmed by the growth of radical Islamists in rebelheld areas, have thrown their weight behind the Syrian Coalition, hoping it could help stem their power.

“Once we get the (battle)field organised, then everything will be organised,” he said. “This will be the army of the new Syria. We want to integrate its ranks and unify the sources of funding and arms,” the Syrian National Coalition member said.

Crocodile takes man in Australia Associated Press Writer

A 24-year-old man was snatched by a crocodile in front of at least 15 onlookers as he swam across a northern Australian river with a friend, police said Sunday.

Northern Territory police said the man was with a group celebrating a birthday at the Mary River Wilderness Retreat, about 110 kilometres (70 miles) from Darwin, on Saturday when he decided to plunge into the water.

“They were watching him swim across,” senior sergeant Geoff Bahnert told AFP of the

group. “And they just saw a crocodile with him in its jaws.”

Police conducted a search for the man, but were unsuccessful.

The search was continuing Sunday, Bahnert said, adding that the largest crocodile at the site had been shot and killed as a precaution.

Reports suggested the men had ignored warnings not to swim in the river because of the risk of a crocodile attack.

“We tell people to stay away from the water, they obviously went against this (and) a man was taken,” an employee of the resort, Erin Bayard, told News Corp Australia.

INDONESIA Government curbs luxury car imports as rupiah dives Associated Press

JAKARTA — Indonesia said Friday that it would curb imports of luxury cars and take other steps to bolster national finances as Southeast Asia’s largest economy suffers a slumping currency and stock market.

Indonesia, along with countries such as India, Malaysia and Thailand, has been buffeted by an exodus of cash from its financial markets as improving economic prospects in the U.S and Europe reverse the tide of money that swept into developing nations the past few years.

Among the measures announced Friday, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Hatta Rajasa said the government will relax mineral export quotas and streamline the investment permit process.

He said the government will increase the import tax on luxury cars and some branded products, provide tax incentives for investment in agriculture and metal industries and seek to reduce oil imports.

The moves aim to shore up Indonesia’s currency and bolster confidence that the country can pay its bills by limiting outflows of money and encouraging inflows.

That in theory should reduce Indonesia’s current account deficit, which largely reflects that it is importing more than it exports.

“With these steps, the current account deficit in the third and fourth

quarters is expected to decrease while economic growth could be maintained,” Rajasa said.

The country’s currency, the rupiah, has sunk to its lowest level in over four years. At its lowest point Friday, it traded at 11,020 per U.S. dollar.

The Jakarta Composite Index was flat Friday, after sliding 8.7 percent in the first four days of the week.

Bank Mandiri market analyst Reny Eka Putri said the Indonesian central bank is also expected to intervene to prevent the rupiah from losing more value.

“The volatility of the financial market is quite high and the national currency has tended to weaken,” Putri said. “But Bank Indonesia will protect the currency.”

In another move Friday, Indonesia’s financial services authority, the OJK, eased regulations on share buybacks to help support the local stock market as investors are pulling their funds away from emerging markets on concern that the U.S. Federal Reserve may soon scale back its bond purchases.

Companies will be allowed to buy back stocks when the Jakarta

Composite Index, Indonesia’s main benchmark, sheds at least 15 percent over three sessions.

“In such conditions, companies can buy back shares without shareholders’ approval for up to 20 percent of their stake,” the OJK said in a statement.

In 2011, Indonesia’s economy grew 6.5 percent, which was its fastest growth since the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis. But growth slowed to 5.8 percent in the second quarter of this year.

The country has also experienced rising inflation, which hit 8.6 percent in July, after the government cut fuel subsidies. The unpopular move hiked pump prices by up to 44 percent.

Meanwhile, economic pains are also being felt elsewhere in Asia.

India’s rupee has plummeted to new lows against the dollar on a near daily basis, showing the pressure of a current account deficit that has swelled from high import costs. The Sensex stock index has fallen nearly 10 percent in the past month.

The pageant is already facing opposition in Muslim-majority Indonesia, with radicals vowing to stage protests against the contest even after organisers agreed to drop the bikini round in a bid to avoid causing offence.

The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) added its voice to the protests Friday, saying a top-level meeting of clerics earlier this month decided it did not want the pageant in the country.

“Exposing women’s bodies in public is ‘haram’, forbidden by Islamic teaching,” senior MUI official Muhyiddin Junaidi told reporters in the capital Jakarta.

“Even though the bikini event is being axed, the contestants will still wear tight dresses and expose parts of their body.”

The group also urged the country’s Muslims, more than 90 percent of the 240 million population, not to watch the pageant on television.

“The contest tries to trick people by saying that it’s not only a physical beauty contest but also to show inner beauty,” said deputy MUI head, Amirsyah Tambunan.

Junaidi said that the MUI had now made its position clear, and it was up to authorities whether they decided to cancel the pageant.

While most Indonesians practise a moderate form of Islam, a vocal hardline fringe has succeeded in getting events cancelled in the past.

Last year, pop sensation Lady Gaga axed a concert after hardliners threatened to burn down the venue and criticised her for wearing only “a bra and panties”.

More than 130 women will compete in Miss World, with some rounds on the resort island of Bali and the final in Bogor outside Jakarta. Bogor is in West Java province, parts of which are considered a stronghold for radicals.

Organisers revealed in June that the contestants would not wear bikinis during the beach fashion section, to be held in Bali, and would instead wear more conservative attire such as traditional sarongs.

“Microsoft has clearly been on the wrong track for a long time,” said Roger Kay, analyst at Endpoint Technologies Associates.

“Essentially Microsoft missed the shift to high mobility entirely.”

Microsoft shares leapt as much as nine percent in premarket trade and were up 6.9 percent to $34.61 at 1717 GMT. The shares, which hit topped $58 in 1999 adjusted for stock splits during the dotcom boom, have been little changed in the past decade.

Ballmer, 57, will continue in the interim as CEO “and will lead Microsoft through the next steps of its transformation to a devices and services company that empowers people for the activities they value most,” said a statement from the Redmond, Washington, company.

The board of directors has appointed a special committee to direct the process chaired by independent director John Thompson and including Gates, Chuck Noski and Steve Luczo.

Microsoft said it is working with Heidrick & Struggles International Inc., an executive recruiting firm, and will consider both external and internal candidates.

JACKSON HOLE, Wyoming — The head of the International Monetary Fund cautioned the world’s major central banks Friday not to withdraw their unconventional support for weak economies too soon.

IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said stimulative policies are still needed in key regions, especially Europe and Japan, which have struggled with prolonged weakness.

She spoke at an annual economics conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, sponsored by the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank.

Lagarde said central banks must carefully develop strategies for scaling back their efforts to keep borrowing rates low. Any pullback should be determined by the strength of individual economies, she said.

Her comments come as the Fed is signaling that it could slow its bond purchases later this year if the U.S. economy continues to improve. The Fed’s bond buying has helped keep

U.S. interest rates near record lows.

“Unconventional monetary policy is still needed in all places it is being used, albeit longer for some than for others,” Lagarde said in her speech to the conference.

The anticipation of a slowdown in Fed bond buying has unsettled U.S. stock and bond markets and sent interest rates up. Rising U.S. rates have, in turn, triggered turmoil in some emerging economies, such as Turkey, India and Indonesia. Officials in those countries have tried to halt declines in the value of their currencies as investors have shifted money into higheryielding investments elsewhere.

Lagarde noted the market declines that have followed Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke’s signal in June that the Fed could begin slowing its bond purchases later this year if the U.S.

economy strengthens further.

She said finance officials should prepare contingency plans in case market turbulence worsens.

Some investors think the Fed could announce at its next meeting in September that it’s reducing its bond purchases.

But comments from Fed officials at Jackson Hole suggested some disagreement within the central bank over the proper timing for a slowdown to begin.

Dennis Lockhart, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, suggested in an interview with CNBC that he might be ready to endorse a bond-buying slowdown in September.

But James Bullard, president of the St. Louis Fed, said he thought the economy remains too uncertain for a pullback next month.

In a separate interview, Bullard said the decision on whether to start tapering could well come into focus just a few days before the Sept. 1718 meeting if Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke decides at that time to provide the other policymakers with a recommendation.

The Secretary of Bali chapter PHRI Ferry Markus on Wednesday mentioned that previously his association and Bali Police carry on a security verification to the 26 hotels in Nusa Dua, Tanjung Benoa, Uluwatu, Jimbaran and Tanah Lot, Tabanan. However, from the number mentioned 10 of them did not meet the security qualification. Five of them located in BTDC area.

“From 13 hotels which located in Nusa Dua and surrounding areas, five of them are still not eligible,” he said.

He revealed that the security verification requirements do not only about the property and human security, but also a thorough security including the transactions security, information and data security, name and image security, as well as security in a number of relevant departments including the food department. Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika calls all the hotels management in Bali, especially in Nusa Dua, Badung District to monitor the security towards the APEC Summit.

“We are concern to the security and please do not underestimate it or take some risks. If the security is not good enough, it is possible the whole preparations for the APEC will be in vain,” Pastika said.

He also asked the police department to provide guidance about the security to the hotels management, especially which located in Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC) area in Nusa Dua, as the main location of APEC Summit. astika also urged to all parties to provide good services during the big event which to be attended by 21 heads of state and governments along with thousands of delegates and journalists from around the world.

“There will be tens thousands of people from around the world to come. We have to provide a better service so they would tell their friends and family when they come back home later. This event is a free promotion as well, we just have to provide a good service to give a good impression,” he said.

In this session, the performing area will usually turn magical, horrific and creepy. If the dancers have come into trance, the stabbers will stab themselves with the kris dagger. The more horrific atmosphere happens when living players are given a mantra and then act as a dead person (corpse). Afterward, the body is consecrated (as in cremation). Then, they are taken to cemetery. Mystical atmosphere is strongly felt in the show at this scene.

Calonarang is indeed a special performing art that cannot be staged arbitrarily. However, after the development of tourism, the Calonarang is also staged for tourist entertainment. However, time and type of ceremony is not made specifically. AA Gde Raka, a religious philosopher, said the Calonarang dance-drama was actually a ritual event where the sanctified effigies in the form of Rangda and Barong venerated were taken down and danced. The Calonarang itself was performed on the piodalan (temple anniversary) in the Dalem Temple and other temples. Players getting involved in the Calonarang attraction were those specifically having high spiritual knowledge and the arts.

According to him, the story of Calonarang was inseparable from the concept of rwa bhineda or basic dualism such as the quality

of good and bad being always side by side.

The Calonarang story was taken from a fairy tale on a widow named Walu Nateng Girah from Girah village, Kediri. Walu meant widow, Nateng (Queen) and Girah was the name of a village in Kediri, East Java. Therefore, Walu Nateng Girah meant a widow queen from Girah village. Walu Nateng Girah is a disciple of left school representing the adharma. Meanwhile, the King Airlangga is the follower of goodness representing the dharma. “It has significance that in this life good and bad qualities are inseparable,” he said.

In that struggle, none of Mpu Bharadah and Nateng Girah won symbolizing that good and bad was inseparable. The staging of Calonarang performance was not entertainment art, but due to influence of globalization, many Calonarang performances then led to profane art, too.

According to Gde Raka, the word Calonarang was derived from the word arang meaning the ash related to plague caused by Nateng Girah where the Girah village was like to have been transformed into ashes because many people were sick and died.

Calonarang performance was usually commenced with the presence of barong dance, telek dance and followed by the emergence of young ladies. The next scene told about Walu Nateng Girah and her followers practicing black magic getting involved in a struggle against the forces of King Airlangga belonging to white school. (BTN)

A businessman dies after burning home and business premises Gianyar (Bali Post)—

I Ketut Raja, 60, a woodcarving businessman from Kengetan hamlet, Singakerta village, Ubud, was found dead with foaming mouth in the rice field area of Subak Abian Tiying, Singakerta. Allegedly, Ketut Raja committed suicide after burning his home and business premises, Friday morning (Aug 23).

It was unknown for sure the reasons of the culprit to burn his home and business premises he established. However, based on information from local residents, he previously had an argument with his wife and son on Thursday night (Aug 22) around 19:00 p.m. After that, on Friday morning at 1:20 a.m. both houses and garage with a car were found to have burned down.

In addition, his business premise receiving the woodcarving orders and a shop rented to an Indian who produced candles were also burned down and so was the motorcycle.

Due to the incident, local residents beat wooden split drum continuously, marking the fire incident in customary bylaw. Trucks of Gianyar Fire Brigade were deployed to extinguish the fire at his home.

However, amidst the blackouts conducted, the residents and officials were surprised by the fire occurred at his business premise. The fire at

two different locations made the Fire Brigade overwhelmed. Therefore, the help was brought in from the Badung Fire Brigade.

The Division Head of Emergency, the Gianyar Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Wayan Gde Eka Putra, said the fire was extinguished around 06:00 a.m. after 6 units of trucks of the Gianyar Fire Brigade extinguished the fire at his home and 15 truck tanks of the Gianyar and Badung Fire Brigade extinguished the fire at the business premises.

After the fire was extinguished, the residents of Singakerta spread to search for the culprit. Ultimately, the culprit was found lying dead in the rice field belonging to Wayan Taram by Ketut Sukanada. Then, the finding was informed to Suana and other residents.

With permission from the Chief of Gianyar Police, the Chief of Ubud Police, Anak Agung Gde Oka, revealed that based on the results of external autopsy, his death was alleged to have been caused by suicide by drinking poison. However, the case was still be explored by the investigators. Regarding to the problem, this officer from Tampaksiring said it was triggered by a family problem.

JINAN, China - Fallen Chinese politician Bo Xilai on Sunday sought to discredit his former top aide as a lying, unreliable witness as the ousted leader denied criminal responsibility in the country’s messiest political scandal in decades.

Courtroom revelations in the politically charged trial have already exposed the unraveling of one of China’s elite families, with Bo calling his wife “crazy” after she testified against him and saying she took their son abroad in fury after he had been unfaithful.

Bo told the Jinan Intermediate People’s Court Sunday that his former right-hand man “was a person of very vile quality who first, lied in court, and secondly, muddied the waters.”

At the close of Sunday morning’s hearing, the court said all evidence had been presented and that the trial was adjourned till Monday.

ing the trial against Bo to cap a major political scandal unleashed last year when his aide fled to a U.S. consulate bearing revelations that Bo’s wife had killed a British businessman.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says many of the 5,000 students who paid up to $35,000 thought they would at least meet Trump but instead all they got was their picture taken in front of a life-size picture of “The Apprentice” TV star.

“Trump University engaged in deception at every stage of consumers’ advancement through costly programs and caused real financial harm,” Schneiderman said. “Trump University, with Donald Trump’s knowledge and participation, relied on Trump’s name recognition and celebrity status to take advantage of consumers who believed in the Trump brand.”

A spokeswoman for Trump did not immediately return a request for comment Saturday.

Last of 5 suspects in Mumbai gang rape arrested

NEW DELHI — Police on Sunday arrested the last of five men wanted in the gang rape of a photojournalist in Mumbai, and said charges would be filed soon in a case that has incensed the public and fueled debate over whether women can be safe in India.

The victim, a 22-year-old Indian woman, said she was anxious to return to work after Thursday night’s assault, in which five men repeatedly raped her while her male colleague was beaten and tied up in an abandoned textile mill in the country’s financial capital.

“Rape is not the end of life,” the woman told the Times of India. A

statement from Jaslok Hospital, where she has been since the attack, said her condition was being monitored but that she was “much better” and was being visited by family.

Indian law forbids identifying rape victims by name.

Police arrested the fifth suspect Sunday in New Delhi, the capital, after rounding up the other four in

Dreamers work to create huge new park in Delhi Associated Press Writer

NEW DELHI — In a tangle of forgotten, overgrown brush in the heart of India’s capital, a quiet plan has been hatched to change the landscape of one of the world’s most populous cities.

An intricate Mughal garden is being created. Crumbling sandstone tombs nearly lost to history are being rebuilt. An artificial lake is being carved out. The renovation of Sunder Nursery is intended to serve as the catalyst for an even more ambitious project: the creation of a mammoth, iconic park that would rival New York’s Central Park as a refuge from urban chaos.

“It would be the place where the city descends. It would be an oasis,” said Ratish Nanda, project director for the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, and the driving force behind the dream of a mega-park.

To create that park would require the merger of a string of adjoining gardens, heritage areas and a zoo administered by different government agencies, an incredibly complicated task in a land where bureaucratic turfs are fiercely protected. And though some officials are beginning to discuss the plan, no formal proposal has been formulated.

But sometimes in India, it takes tenacious dreamers like Nanda to achieve the seemingly impossible.

Nanda and the Aga Khan Trust have taken on seemingly impossible tasks before. They helped wrest a 17 acre compound in the area, along with a large monument, from India’s version of the Boy Scouts. They are currently fighting with railways officials to get them to remove a storeroom blocking access to another monument. “One single man has to be there, to strive, to go out and achieve this,” said Ashok Khurana, a powerful supporter and the recently retired head of Delhi’s Central Public Works Department, one of the many agencies that would need to work together to create the giant park.

The payoff would be considerable. Delhi, with a population of about 17 million, is a surprisingly green city, with small parks dotting many neighborhoods and Lodhi Gardens — with a clutch of crumbling monuments of its own — attracting speed walkers and picnickers in upscale south Delhi. The mega-park would tower over them all. It would be 480 hectares (1,200 acres).

Geopark, exploitation amidst conservation

By a year of the Mount Batur rocky area set by the UNESCO, the presence of the geopark had so far not considered to give significant contribution to the welfare of society. Besides, the government should also be more focused. If it really wanted to perform the conservation, the exploitation should be more disciplined. According to him, the geopark previously directed to become a spearhead for people’s welfare indeed retained its own dilemma.

The geopark area that should be protected as a terrestrial park of the Mount Batur caldera on the other side was massively exploited such as by the sand mining (quarry C).

For the communities around the quarry, it was one of the sources of their prosperity. “Since the very beginning, the geopark was directed to become a spearhead for the welfare of community but it then resulted in a dilemma. Originally, there has been indeed a quarry area at the geopark region having be-

come the source of prosperity for lower class community,” he said.

This politician from Undisan village added if the government would like to discipline the sand mining activity it should also be coupled with the provision of substitute job opportunities for local people. Besides, in response to the

previous information mentioning if in the geopark region would also be equipped with tourism facilities such as golf courses, said Sudiasa, it obviously opposed to the conservation efforts. Indirectly, establishment of the golf course would exploit the protected areas.

In this case, Sudiasa judged the government seemed to have not focused. “If choosing the geopark, please go on. If it’s a part of the potential to be developed or exploited, please review it first. If it is aimed at improving the people’s welfare, the government should

take a decision by taking one of two choices,” he said.

According to his observation, so far the presence of geopark could not have given a great contribution to surrounding community. Even, a few people still had not understood about the geopark itself. “So far, I think a lot of people remain not to understand about the geopark. To that end, I do hope the government could more aggressively socialize as well as invite the stakeholders to think about the next measures,” he said while adding if the idea of geopark seemed to be a forced idea.

BEIJING — China says the number of Japanese tourists visiting Beijing fell by more than half in the first six months of the year amid a spike in tensions between the countries.

Beijing’s statistics bureau said Sunday that 136,000 Japanese tourists visited the capital between January and July. That was down 53.7 percent from the same period last year.

The drop follows violent anti-Japanese protests in Beijing and several other Chinese cities in September in response to complaints from the government over Japan’s move to nationalize uninhabited East China Sea islands claimed by China. Japanese businesses were torched and Japanesebrand cars were smashed despite their having been locally made.

And the DNA sample, either from a swab of the cub’s mouth or feces, will be used to determine the cub’s father. Mei Xiang was artificially inseminated both with sperm from the zoo’s male panda, Tian Tian, as well as a male panda at the San Diego zoo, Gao Gao.

Culprit disposes kris of Rambut Siwi Temple to the sea Reconstruction of the sanctified effigy (pratima) theft in a number of temples in Jembrana on Friday (Aug 23) was tightly guarded by police.

Allegedly, the culprits committed the action in six temples such as in the Bujangga Sakti Temple, Subak Temple, Dalem Temple, Manggisari village (Pekutatan subdistrict), Rambutsiwi Temple (Mendoyo) and Indrakusuma Temple and Dalem Temple (Melaya). The reconstruction made in marathon got a minor incident.

A number of residents in the Bujangga Sakti Temple having been waiting to watch the reconstruction were annoyed. The culprit, Abdul Rozak, 52, when getting out of the car, he was about to be hit by the

people having been waiting for him.

The residents looked like in a halfconscious state and were about to hit the culprit. The effort of residents could be prevented by Pekutatan Police officers alerted at the location. Later on, the reconstruction could be performed. At least 25 scenes were undertaken in tree temples in Pekutatan. In the theft, the culprit committed the crimes with his friend with initials AHM but was still at large.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Kanye West unveils photo of baby on TV’s ‘Kris’ Baby North West has made her television debut. Kanye West showed a photo Friday of his 2-month-old daughter with Kim Kardashian on Kris Jenner’s Fox show, “Kris.” The family matriarch also posted an image of her granddaughter on Twitter.

Though cameras constantly follow the Kardashian clan, this is the first time the newest member of the family has been publicly unveiled. The photo shows a brown-haired baby reaching toward the camera.

West also discussed fatherhood and his relationship with Kardashian. He called her “my joy” and said “she brought my new joy into the world.”

But he acknowledged being a new dad in the spotlight isn’t easy.

Actor Alec Baldwin and his wife have given birth to a baby girl in New York. Hilaria Baldwin tweeted the news from her verified Twitter account Friday night. She says the family is overjoyed and that Carmen Gabriela “is absolutely perfect.”

The former “30 Rock” star already is the father of a 17-year-old daughter, Ireland, from his previous marriage to actress Kim Basinger.

Hilaria Baldwin is a special correspondent for the TV show “Extra.”

The couple wed last June after a three-month engagement.

On her verified Twitter account, Ireland Baldwin welcomed her new sister into the world and linked to a blog post with 10 pieces of advice for the newborn.

APEC Summit, airport closed for 3 days

Mangupura (Bali Post)—

Implementation of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit held early October in Bali would suspend the Ngurah Rai International airport operation for commercial aircrafts. The airport closure would last for 3 days, namely on October 6, 8 and 9. This statement was made by the National Committee of the APEC Summit, Ministry of Communications and Informatics, Ahmed Kurnia, in Nusa Dua, Saturday (Aug 24).

He said the closure did not last for 24 hours, but in accordance with the schedule of flight arrivals of the delegates and heads of state

that would attend the APEC Summit. As scheduled, the closing on October 6 would start from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Meanwhile, on

October 8 the closing would last for 7 hours from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on October 9, the closing for commercial aircraft would be from 07:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

“This temporary closure is only implemented based on the schedule agreed. Beyond the schedule, general aviation can arrive and depart from the Ngurah Rai Airport in accordance with the schedule specified,” he said.

He said the government had made coordination related to the

airport closure and socialization.

Thus, he was optimistic that undesirable things would not happen because his party had disseminated the information far in advance to the airlines companies, ticket sales agency and travel agency “We hope this information can be known to the public so as not to travel ahead of the schedule specified, especially for the aircraft making transit in Bali because Bali is also a transit point for the destinations in eastern Indonesia,”

he said.

Meanwhile, for tourists and people that had made a reservation of airline tickets coinciding with the schedules were expected to confirm directly to the ticket agency or related parties.

He acknowledged the closure of the airport activity was indeed disturbing the public interest. “If there are people wishing to travel to outside the island, they can use the land and sea transportation,” he said. (kmb18)

Affleck as Batman?

The casting of Hollywood A-lister Ben Affleck as the new Batman sparked fan outrage Friday, with petitions calling for the coveted role to be recast and widespread howling on Twitter.

Warner Bros. announced Thursday that Affleck -- who earlier this year was the darling of Tinseltown when his “Argo” took home the Oscar for best picture -- would next don the Dark Knight’s cape.

Affleck’s debut as the savior of Gotham will come in a film slated for release in 2015, and also to feature Henry Cavill as Superman. Zack Snyder is to direct.

The Batman recast is not the first. Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney and, most recently, Christian Bale, have all played the role.

But fans cried foul, with more than 20,000 people signing a petition at change.org calling on Warner Bros. to ditch the 41-year-old star.

“His acting skill is not even close to being believable as Bruce Wayne and he won’t do the role justice. He’s not built, nor is he intimidating enough for the role of Batman,” the petition says.

“His portrayal of Daredevil was atrocious and he’s not remotely close to an action star. Please find someone else.”

Another petition was posted on the White House website for several hours before being removed.

On Twitter, the hashtag #BetterBatmanThanBenAffleck was trending. Many Internet users proposed other actors, from Josh Brolin to Affleck pal Matt Damon to -- bizarrely -- Meryl Streep.
