Badung Regent Questions Best Western Case Denpasar (Bali Post) –
The two months ongoing investigation of Best Western Kuta Hotel case Badung Government report seemed unclear according to Badung Regent, A.A. Gede Agung, who came to Denpasar Tourism Police last Wednesday (24/8) with several other Badung Government officials. His visitation was welcomed by Vice Head of the police, GAPC Putu Mahasena, where they discussed the continuation of the investigation in one of the headquarter rooms. After the meeting, Regent Agung admitted his visitation is one of Badung Government’s form of seriousness in justice moreover Badung Government was the one that reported this case connecting to the hotel’s violation on spatial planning. “Our report has been in since 6th June 2011 and for sure Denpasar Tourism police have further investigated,” Agung explained accompanied by Head of Badung Public Relation Section, Gede Weda Dharmaja, which continued with a report by his leagal counsel, Suryatin SH and colleagues accompanied by Badung Law Expert staff. “There has been several witnesses checked for statements. If needed, we are ready to bring more Badung Government officials to be checked,” Suryatin clarified. Meanwhile Mahasena admitted not ready to comment on this case as he hasn’t got the report which witnesses have been investigated. Officers encounter abnormal flow meter Tabanan (Bali Post)—
Investigator team of Bali public order officers (Satpol PP) together with the Metrology Officers of Bali Industry and Trade Agency organized an inspection to all petrol stations in Tabanan on Wednesday (Aug 24). As a result, it was encountered an abnormal flow meter in a petrol station at Sanggulan. When inspecting the flow meter for the Premium fuel of motorcycle, the officers found ever-changing results of measurement. Surprisingly, the measurement was far below the normal threshold. At the first measurement, it was found a difference up to 36 ml per 10 liters. In the next measurement, the result decreased to 40 ml. In other words, every 10 liters of Premium fuel there was shortage of oil volume nearly a half-liter. “It is detrimental to consumers. On that account, it must be inspected,” said civil servant investigator of Bali public order officers, Gusti Ngurah Suadnyana, in the midst of such inspection. Deficiency in measurement had been examined up to 5 times. But the results were always below the normal threshold. Afterward, the officers resumed the inspection to the pump of car’s gasoline and diesel pump. It was obtained that measurement was still in normal condition. Suadnyana added that such inspection provided assurance for fuel consumers, especially on entering the homecoming season. Petrol stations found to have abnormal measurement were directly given a reprimand letter and asked to undergo a calibration again. According to Suadnyana, such inspection was meant to enforce the law No. 2/2011 concerning with Public Service Levies and Law No. 21/1981 concerning with the Legal Metrology. If violated, it could be imposed with a fine of IDR 50 million and imprisonment of six months. Aside from related to the homecoming season, the inspection was responding to many reports and complaints of the public. In essence, the complaints were about the allegation of flow meter inaccuracy or rogue at petrol stations. “There are complaints via SMS and internet of Bali Government,” he explained. If the reprimand letter was ignored, the investigator would send the second reprimand. Ultimately, when staying stubborn the violators would be given sanction in the form of sealing. The inspection team lead by Division Head of Bali public order officers, Ketut Gede Arnawa, also involved a special criminal investigator of Bali Police and personnel of Satpol PP. Similar inspection was persistently scheduled to be held at all petrol stations across Bali. It was intended to avoid the petrol stations from providing inappropriate measurement with the norms. Except for Sanggulan petrol station, the officers also targeted other petrol stations. As a result, the team encountered no violating stations. They were entirely within the limit of reasonableness. Supervisor of Sanggulan petrol station, Ni Ketut Srinadi, dismissed that such abnormal measurement was element of intent. She explained her party carried out calibration for the measuring cup every day, including six-monthly calibration by metrology officers and three- monthly by Pertamina. (udi)

Indeed, he said, there were water sources from Yeh Sanga River, but since they were taken by the Municipality Waterworks (PDAM), the water sources were finally unable to be relied on. Trinidad reports mass arrests in crackdown on crime Reuters
PORT OF SPAIN - Authorities rounded up nearly 120 people in Trinidad and Tobago after imposing emergency rule on the oil-rich Caribbean nation this week to halt a spike in violent crime. Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs said 117 criminal suspects were detained between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, including at least 56 purported gang members on charges ranging from drug possession and trafficking to illegal weapons possession. They were arrested under the limited state of emergency announced by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Sunday, which gave the police and military broad powers to conduct search and seizure operations and make arrests. The provisional suspension of some constitutional guarantees came in response to a spate of murders blamed on the drug trade and turf wars over smuggling routes through Trinidad and To-
bago, which is a trans-shipment point for South American cocaine headed to Europe and the United States. The twin-island southern Caribbean country, which is a leading supplier of liquefied natural gas to the United States, has faced a growing threat from heavily armed street gangs. Attorney General Anand Ramlogan urged gang members to lay down their arms and get on the right side of the law. Despite potential reprisals, he suggested they help police uncover drug and weapons caches. “If you share with us, information on a gang, not only will you be able to come out of that gang but we can snuff out the lifeblood and very existence of gangs so that you can be able to have a life of your own,” Ramlogan told a news conference on Wednesday. Even as the Libyan rebels claimed to have most of the capital of Tripoli under their control, the whereabouts of Moammar Gadhafi remain a mystery. Libya’s opposition National Transition Council said Wednesday it was offering a $1.7 million bounty for Gadhafi’s capture, dead or alive. Jubilant rebels swarmed through Gadhafi’s compound in the Tripoli neighborhood of Bab al-Azizya Tuesday, “seizing arms and smashing symbols” of the tyrant who has brutally ruled the North African nation for the past 42 years, Reuters reported from Tripoli. At about the 2-minute mark in the video below, you can see one euphoric Libyan freedom fighter delighting in his find of what looks to be one of Gadhafi’s military hats, allegedly seized from the Gadhafi compound. Gadhafi taunted the rebels in an interview with a pro-regime radio station late Tuesday. He claimed his
retreat from Azizya was a tactical matter necessitated by NATO air strikes on the compound. “I have been out a bit in Tripoli discreetly, without being seen by people, and ... I did not feel that Tripoli was in danger,” Gadhafi said, Reuters reported. He vowed, as he typically does, to fight “until victory or martyrdom.” Rebel fighters were meantime moving Wednesday on Gadhafi’s hometown of Sirte, over 300 miles east of Tripoli, under suspicion he may be there. “Gadhafi sent a message [to his loyalists in Sirte] telling them to
fight to the death,” National Transition Council representative Hassan Droy told Reuters. “A problem is the people there are totally disconnected—they’ve had no electricity or telephones for three days—and they don’t know what’s happening.” Although there were continued clashes in Tripoli between regime loyalists and rebels, there were signs that the Libyan opposition was moving from being the government-in-waiting to the de facto Libyan government. National Transition Council cabinet chief Mahmoud Jibril was due to meet French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris Wednesday. France, the United States and several European nations meantime said they would move to unfreeze some of the billions of dollars in the Libyan regime assets in foreign bank accounts to the NTC, so it can provide government services.
Strong 7.0-magnitude quake shakes Peruvian Amazon Reuters
LIMA - A strong earthquake struck a remote Amazon region of Peru on Wednesday, shaking buildings far away in the capital and in neighboring Brazil, although no injuries or damage were reported. The 7.0-magnitude quake’s epicenter was near the town of Pucallpa, which lies some 370 miles from Lima in a sparsely populated centraleastern region close to the Brazilian border, the U.S. Geological Survey said. “There have been no damages reported, either to structures or to people,” said Javier Urrelo, head of the government’s civil defense agency in the Ucayali region, where Pucallpa is located. Energy companies in the area, which produces some oil and natural gas, said their facilities were operating normally. It was the most powerful earthquake to hit the Andean country since a 7.9-magnitude temblor killed more than 500 people and destroyed thousands of houses in 2007. One seismologist said the depth of Wednesday’s quake — 90 miles — meant damage was unlikely.
Across the nearby border in the Brazilian city of Cruzeiro do Sul, journalist Nelson Liano was in a supermarket at the time of the quake and said some goods fell off the shelves. “It was that sensation when you’re on a boat and it rocks,” he told Reuters. In Peru’s coastal capital of Lima, office buildings shook and mobile phone services were interrupted. Local radio bulletins said the quake caused alarm across central Peru, sending panicked students and workers rushing out of classrooms and offices. Earthquake-prone Peru is a leading metals exporter, but the region hit on Wednesday is not a mining area. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Russian supply ship for space station crashes Associated Press Writer
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — A Russian space station supply ship crashed with a thunderous boom into Siberia minutes after launch Wednesday, rattling NASA and others in this new era without any shuttles to bail out the orbiting outpost. The rocket failed barely a month after NASA’s final space shuttle flight. While the International Space Station has more than enough supplies, the accident threatens to delay the launch of the next crew, just one month away. That’s because the upper stage of the unmanned Soyuz rocket that failed is similar to the ones used to launch astronauts to the station. In addition, three of the six space station residents who are due to return to Earth in two weeks might end up staying longer. NASA wants a full staff to keep research going. The astronauts were just beginning to spend more time on scientific experiments, now that the station is complete. The Soyuz rocket soared right on time from Kazakhstan, and everything seemed to be going perfectly until just over five minutes into the flight. The third-stage ignited, but the rocket commanded the engine to shut down because of a problem,
said NASA’s space station program manager, Mike Suffredini. All contact with the spacecraft was lost. Russian space officials declared it a total failure after reports of wreckage falling with a deafening roar in a remote area of Siberia. “The explosion was so strong that for 100 kilometers (60 miles) glass almost flew out of the windows,” Alexander Borisov, head of the Choisky region in Russia’s Altai province, was quoted by state news agency RIA Novosti as saying. Shuttle Atlantis’ final mission in July left the space station with a year’s worth of provisions. Without the shuttles, NASA now is counting on Russia, Europe and Japan, as well as private U.S. businesses, to keep the station stocked. The Russians had 3 tons of supplies aboard the Progress ship that was destroyed. And it’s the Russians
who will be transporting astronauts back and forth until U.S. private industry can pick up the human load. NASA and its international partners want to keep the space station running until at least 2020. At a news briefing, Suffredini said the Sept. 22 launch of a new three-man crew — one American and two Russians — may need to be delayed, depending on how the accident investigation goes. They are supposed to replace American Ronald Garan Jr. and Russians Andrey Borisenko and Alexander Samokutyaev who have been on the space station since April and are due to return to Earth on Sept. 8. Their medical status will be taken into account, as well as their exposure to cosmic radiation, before any decision is made to keep them in orbit an extra month or two, Suffredini said.
ROME - Four Italian journalists were abducted by gunmen near Zawiyah in western Libya as they traveled toward Tripoli on Wednesday, Italian officials said. The four, who worked for Italian newspapers Corriere della Sera, La Stampa and Avvenire, are being held in an apartment in Tripoli, said Guido de Sanctis, the Italian consul in Benghazi, who was able to speak to one of the journalists by phone. “They are fine, even if everything happened in a very difficult atmosphere,” de Sanctis told Reuters. “They have been allowed to call Italy and they have been allowed to get calls from us. They were given food to eat when the Ramadan fast was broken.” The four were seized near Zawiyah, on the coastal highway 50 km (30 miles) west of Tripoli by armed men who killed their driver, de Sanctis said. The journalists were then handed to others, presumably Muammar Gaddafi loyalists, he said. The journalists believe the apartment they are being held in Tripoli is close to the Rixos hotel where foreign journalists who were trapped for five days left unharmed earlier on Wednesday, de Sanctis said. The journalist at Avvenire, the Italian bishops’ newspaper, was also allowed to call the newspaper and said they were well, Italian media said. Italy’s government said it was closely monitoring the situation.

What government has done is not appropriate with the plan. Government has just given some dreams to the public. All are merely dreams and stand in the level of plan,” he said. According to him, relevant agencies including government should facilitate it. Travel agencies and hotels were directed to take advantage of the commodities produced by farmers such as crispy spinach, mushroom chips, corn chips and others. By doing so, the agricultural products could be purchased continuously with a better added value than sold in unprocessed ingredients. “For instance, tourists are taken to see local farmers in action, travel agencies and their guests are happy, but farmers get nothing,” he said. By synergizing both sectors, tourists would get what they wanted, while farmers could sell their farming products. The matter of quality improvement could be facilitated by universities, while government would serve as facilitator in the research and development. “Resolving the agricultural problems must be undertaken from upstream to downstream. Among others, the market facility should be set up first, and the agricultural products should be absorbed by tourism where travel agencies were obliged to take the results of the processed agricultural products,” he said. Thousands join free ‘mudik‘ travel programs Antara
JAKARTA - While the tickets of various modes of transpiration are now difficult to obtain for ‘mudik‘ (home-bound trips), tens of thousands of Idul Fitri travelers have opted to join free mudik programs offered by a number of companies. Free mudik programs are among others offered by PT Jamu Sido Muncul, a major traditional herbal medicine (jamu) producer and cellular phone operator PT Telkomsel, as well as by a political party, National Mandate Party (PAN). On Thursday, at least 19,000 Idul Fitri travelers who joined PT Sido Muncul‘s free mudik‘s program were seen off by five ministers at the western parking lot of the Jakarta Fair Ground. Before they departed the travelers were entertained with music performance. The ‘Wali‘ band music group appeared with its popular single songs on the stage during a function to see off 19,000 Idul Fitri travelers in a free ‘mudik‘ (going home) program here on Thursday. The appearance of the Wali Band group was greeted with cheers and applause by the would-be travelers most of whom were herb traders, hawkers and their families from Jakarta and its buffer towns. Some of the travelers who were dominated by women and children also took part and sang songs with the artists on the stage. Organized under the sponsorship of herbal company PT Sido Muncul, the event was also enlivened by Piyu of ‘Padi‘ band music
group and Sofie Vavita, wife of Pongki Jikustik. Five ministers took part in bidding farewell to the departure of the 19,000 travelers, namely Chief Peoploe‘s Welfare Minister Agung Laksono, Women Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Linda Amalia Sari Gumelar, Transportation Minister Freddy Numberi and Manpower Minister Muhaimin Iskandar. Also present were Meutia Hatta (presidential adviser), Deputy Police Chief Com. Gen Nanan Soekarna, Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo and Director of PT Sido Muncul Irwan Hidayat. Some 300 buses were provided by PT Jamu Sido Muncul, a major traditional herbal medicine (jamu) producer, to take mostly jamu vendors and their families, to Yogyakarta, Cirebon, Kuningan (West Java), Tegal, Banjarnegara, Solo, and Wonogiri (Central Java), free of charge. The government appreciated private companies which organized free “mudik” and hoped more companies would follow the step next year. “Hopefully, in the future more companies will organize free `mudik`,” Coordinating Minister for People`s Welfare Agung Laksono said.
Minister Linda Gumelar meanwhile in her remarks urged PT Sido Muncul to provide health insurance and social security for jamu vendors and their families, in order to stimulate them to be more productive in marketing jamu. Free “mudik” program could help protect women and children in general vulnerable amidst big crowds of home-bound travelers. The same program was also offered by cellular phone operator PT Telkomsel which on Thursday also dispatched at least 1,000 Idul Fitri travelers for free using the train mode of transportation. The 1,000 Idul Fitri travelers went home towns through PT Telkomsel‘s Mudik for free program or ‘Mudik TelkomselSiaga Gratis. “TelkomSiaga Mudik For Free program is a form of appreciation of Telkomsel for its customers and a synergy with state-owned railway company PT Kreta Api Indonesia (KAI),” Telkomsel`s Vice President for Jakarta and West Java Venusiana Papasi said after bidding farewell to the travelers at Gambir Railway station here on Thursday. Vanusiana said the travelers were transported by 136 coaches OF the executive Agro Anggrek, Bima and Sembrani trains, with the farthest destination of Surabaya in East Java. She said that Telkomsel in its ‘Mudik TelkomselSiaga for free‘ for 2011 dispatched 5,000 Idul Fitri customer travelers who were transported by five modes of transportation, namely trains, ships, buses, cars and airplanes.
Katingan water police spokesman Adjunct Commissioner Sudirman said here on Thursday that the speedboat carrying Lebaran holiday travelers was engulfed by huge waves at Cemeti strait between Kotawaringin Timur and Katingan districts at 8.30 local time on Wednesday miring. Sudirman said the six fatalities were made up of three women and three men, respectively identified as Tugiyati, Sri Walujeng, Rumaningsih, and Kris, Rudi, Joni, while the missing passengers were M.Nurhuda, Wika, and Nika.
The bodies of all fatalities have been evacuated to Pegatan, Katingan district in Central Kalimantan. Sudirman said the ill-fated speed boat, skippered by Aliansyah, left Mentawai Baru Hilir in Kotawaringin Timur district at 7 in the morning for Pegatan in in Katingan district but 90 afterward it was hit by big waves and then capsized at Cemeti strait. As of Thursday the joint rescue workers from Kotawaringin water police and military officials were still searching for the missing passengers of the ill-fated speed boat.

rested in March after being found in a Jakarta hotel taking crystal methamphetamines. Suharto oversaw one of the most brutal dictatorships of the 20th century. He was ousted in 1998 and died 10 years later. This was the second drug case involving his family. In 2000, Putri’s mother Gusti Maya Firanti Noor was sentenced to eight months in jail for possessing amphetamines.

Dispatching the Surabya to Lamongan and Bojonegoro free train, the deputy transportation minister was accompanied by East Java Governor Soekarwo, Surabya Mayor Tri Rismaharini, and railway transportation director general Tundjung Inderawan.
Bambang Susantono dispatched the free train to mark the operation of fully air conditioned Indonesian diesel train (KRDIAC) economic class. The Lebaran holiday travelers from Surabaya will be transported free by the KRDI to Lamongan and Bojonegoro from August 25 until September 9, 2011. “We are grateful we can finally launch the fully air conditioned economic diesel train in our effort to strengthen the Lebaran transportation fleet,” Bambang Susantono said.

Bali Today Sole Makotek Tradition at Munggu Village Munggu customary village, Mengwi subdistrict, had just held a matchless tradition named makotek concurring with the Kuningan Festivity on Saturday (Dec 18). The tradition organized around the Munggu area was vigorously witnessed by thousands of spectators both of the local community and foreign tourists.

Implementation of such religious ceremony was intended to invoke the safety of devotees. Series of the makotek tradition was commenced with a ceremony picking up the lord to Dalem Temple and then resumed with encircling the village and came to an end at Puseh Temple. Each male villager carried a stick along of 2.5 to 3 meters. The upper end of the stick or the socalled wooden spear was nicely embellished with foliages. Those villagers then tightened their spear. Subsequently, they respectively attempted to lay down the spear of their opponent by mutually pushing the spear. Position of all spears were facing upwards, forming a cone. Well, occasionally a young man climbed
to the top of the spear and tried to hold the fort for some time. At that time, other villagers would keep on pushing the spear one another until the cone leaned in one direction and began to fall apart. All participants were absorbed in pleasurable atmosphere, though some of them were hit by the spear. According to local community leader, makotek or ngerebek tradition had been performed through the generations since 1932. Originally, the makotek tradition made use of iron spear. However, in harmony with passage of time and avoiding any injury among the participants, since 1948 it had began to be replaced by wooden spear, namely made of pulet tree. Archeological protection in Bali and the role of the society Archeological protection through maintenance, preservation and conservation, even through reconstruction as well, has turned to be an international problem not only today, but actually in the future. Such matters were indicated by the activities of UNESCO as an international institution, who concerned with the most important of world cultural heritage e.g. archeological remains. UNESCO have done a lot of excellent work, which need a reasonable budgets, expert, equipment etc. and the best example is the safeguarding of Borobudur temple. As the UNESCO member, our governments are concerned and responsible to protect our monuments for our national interest, such as Borobudur temple. Based on the development of archaeological studies and the related studies especially in field of archaeological protection, now such problems is a technical matter and besed on scientific consideration. Facing such problem , Indonesian government have done a number of works
e.g the safeguarding of borobudur tample {in cooperation with {UNESCO}, Prambanan tample ,Demak mosque, and other tamples in Bali namely Pura Besakih ,Pura Mengening , Pura Pegulingan , Pura Taman Sari etc. In this case, our government as one of the ASEAN countries have carried out a coordinate programmers through SPAFA (Sub project of archaeology and fine art) to find out the effective ways and means dealing with the problems of archaeological protection . Discussing the archaeological protection in Bali, it should be remembered that Bali, even a very small island, but has a lot of archaeological monuments, which most of them belonged to living monuments. Among them are a number of Hindu tample, spreated nearly in the island, as well as Hindu statues, inscription etc. As the holy monuments for Balinese society, so the Balinese have the responsibility to take care their monuments as their religious function Officially, archaeological protection in Bali is
done by Bali Office for Preservation of archaeological and Historical Heritage (Kantor Bali Suaka peninggelang Sejarah dan Purbakala Bali) in coordination and corporation with the local government and local people as well. This office have done a lot of archaeological reconstruction, but not yet covered the whole of them, because of the limited budgets etc. In case of protecting the archaeological monuments in Bali, Bali Office for Preservation of archaeological and Historical Heritage has given a technical guidance to the local people for reconstructing their monuments and financial support as well. As the governments have a very limited budget for these works, and as the owner of the living monuments, so the Balinese people have their religious tasks and responsibility to protect sacred monuments. In Bali generally each village have three village temples named Pura Kyayangan Tiga e.g Pura Puseh,Pura Desa (sometime combined with Pura Bale Agung ) and Pura dalem. Among them are be-
longed to archaeological monuments and frequently in these temple a number of archaeological monuments are preserved such as statues, inscription etc. It is important to note here that the unity of the Balinese society is tightly bounded by the village temples and social organization. Based on religious reasons, actuality Balinese society has a strong spirit to keep their monuments in a well condition as holy monuments. Since a very long time the Balinese people have maintained and restored their monuments in a very traditional ways, based on their own religious will and spirit, and for this purpose they collected the materials, even reasonable money from the village members. The village members, especially the skilled members (Balinese, undagi) did the restoration and led by the village leader, without any payment (Balinese, ngayah). This mutual model of works named gotong royong is one of the Indonesian spirits, which has been developed since the early time
until today. It is a remarkable fact since the early time Balinese people have done the archeological protection in their traditional ways, which really should be regarded as a community based conservation. The most important meaning of these facts is the Balinese have done their religious task, which still continued from one generation to next generation and still retained until today. Therefore these facts indicated that the Balinese people from time to time have played important role for protecting their archeological monuments, for worshipping their ancestor’s spirit, the Hindu Trinity as well as their local deities. It is hoped that this religious traditions should be keep in people’s mind and increased, now and in the near future for the safeguarding the archeological monuments and its cultural values. Balinese Culture Wajik
(Rice Flour Cake with Palm Sugar) Overview: There are a couple of variations on this popular cake, which can be stored in the refrigerator for several days. It is normally served at room temperature, but can also be served warm topped with coconut milk. Another variations are to add ripe diced jackfruits (or substitute with sultanas) after the rice is partially cooked. Ingredients: 1 cup glutinous white rice 1 cup water 1 pandan leaf ½ cup palm sugar syrup ¼ cup thick coconut milk Pinch of salt Preparation: Rinse rice very well under running water for 2 minutes and soak for 4 hours. Rinse again until water becomes clear. Place rice, 1 cup of water and pandan leaf in rice cooker or steamer and cook for approx 20 minutes, or until liquid has evaporated. Add palm sugar syrup, coconut milk and salt, and steam for 15 minutes. Spread rice evenly 2.5 cm thick on tray and allow to cool to room temperature. Wet a sharp knife with warm and cut into even squares to serve. Helpful hint: to speed up the soaking process, pour boiling water over the rice and let stand for 1 hour. Drain, then add another lot of boiling water and soak for another 30 minutes. The delicate flavors of the shrimp and fish are greatly improved if you can find spears of fresh lemongrass to use as skewers, and if you can cook them over a fire of coconut husks rather than charcoal. Nonetheless, even with wooden skewers and a standard charcoal grill, you will have people coming back more. Ingredients: 600 gr skinned boneless snapper fillet 1 cup freshly grated coconut or 1½ cups moistened desiccated coconut ½ cup seafood spice paste 5 fragrant lime leaves, chopped 1 tsp black peppercorns, finely crushed 1 tsp salt 3-5 bird’s eye chilies, very finely chopped 2 tbsp palm sugar Lemon grass or satay skewers Preparation: 1. Mince fish fillet very finely in a food processor or with a chopper. 2. Add all other ingredients & mix well. 3. Mould a heaped tablespoon full of this mixture around a wooden skewer or over trimmed stalks of lemon grass and grill over charcoal until golden brown. Note: This recipe won’t work with frozen fish. BUSINESS Steve Jobs quits as Apple CEO, Cook takes over Reuters
SAN FRANCISCO/LOS ANGELES - Steve Jobs resigned as CEO of Apple Inc on Wednesday and passed the reins to his right-hand man Tim Cook, saying he could no longer fulfill the duties in a bombshell announcement that raised fears his health has deteriorated further. Jobs, who fought and survived a rare form of pancreatic cancer and revolutionized the technology arena with the iPhone and the iPad in the past four years, is deemed the heart and soul of a company that this month briefly became the most valuable in America. “I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come,” Jobs, who takes on the new position of chairman, said in a short letter announcing his resignation. The letter and a separate terse, somewhat cryptic statement from Apple raised more questions than it answered about Jobs’ health and the future of the company. While it’s unlikely that his departure as CEO will derail Apple’s ambitious product-launch roadmap in the near term, there are concerns about whether the company would stay a creative force to be reckoned with beyond the next year or so without its founder and visionary at the helm. That is why Apple’s stock dropped as much as 7 percent in after-hours trading when Jobs’ departure was announced. In the company statement, Apple co-lead director Art Levinson on be-
half of the board praised Jobs’ “extraordinary vision and leadership” and “countless contributions to Apple’s success”, saying he would continue to serve the company with “unique insights, creativity and inspiration.” However, the statement, which also talked about Cook’s outstanding performance, said nothing about Jobs’ health. His battle with pancreatic cancer, which has stretched over several years, has been of deep concern to Apple fans, investors and the company’s board. Over the past two years, even board members have confided to friends their concern that Jobs, in his quest for privacy, wasn’t being forthcoming with directors about the true condition of his health. Jobs has been on medical leave since January 17, with his duties being filled by Cook, who was chief operating officer. Jobs spent all Wednesday meeting with board members and top managers at Apple’s headquarters at 1 Infinite Loop in Cupertino, and plans to remain active in his new role, a source close to Jobs told Reuters. A second source said Jobs will remain on the board of Walt Disney Co. Still, some industry insiders express concern that Jobs’ has clearly signaled he is too ill to keep up the
punishing pace of a top executive job. The 56-year-old Jobs had briefly emerged from medical leave in March to unveil the latest iPad and later attended a dinner hosted by President Barack Obama for technology leaders in Silicon Valley. But his often-gaunt appearance had sparked questions about how bad his illness was and his ability to continue at Apple. In each of Jobs’ three health-related absences, Cook has taken over the helm. But the 50-year-old Alabama native, a former Compaq executive and an acknowledged master of supply-chain management, remains largely untested in Wall Street’s view. That’s partly why, despite Cook being viewed as a safe bet to run Apple’s sprawling empire, some still think his boss will be very badly missed. One Silicon Valley CEO, who declined to be identified because of the sensitive issues involved, said the tone of Jobs’ statement indicated his health might be worse than publicly known. Jobs has earned a reputation for commanding every aspect of operations - from day-to-day running to broad strategic decisions - suggesting he would not have given up the job if he had a choice.

Higher durable-goods orders ease economic worries Associated Press
WASHINGTON — A surge in demand for autos and aircraft drove orders for long-lasting manufactured goods higher in July, easing fears that the U.S. economy might be on the verge of another recession. The rebound in the auto industry helped offset a decline in orders for most other factory goods. Stocks rose after the better-thanexpected report showed the biggest increase in durable-goods orders since March, when the Japan earthquake disrupted supply chains and slowed auto production. The Dow Jones industrial average jumped about 100 points after the report came out. It later gave back some of those gains to be up more than 40 points in the afternoon. Broader indexes were mixed.
Overall orders for durable goods rose 4 percent last month, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. The report “reinforces other data that the economy wasn’t at serious risk of recession through July,” said David Resler, chief U.S. economist at Nomura Securities. Retail sales and industrial production also held up well last month, he said. The data did offer a cautionary signal: a key category that tracks business investment plans fell 1.5 percent, the biggest drop in six months. That suggests businesses are pulling back on spending. Orders in all other major categories dropped, including computers, electronic goods, and machinery. Resler and other economists also warned that the turmoil in the stock markets could cause businesses to pull back further this month.
“It remains to be seen whether firms cancelled or postponed planned orders,” Paul Dales, an economist at Capital Economics, said in note to clients. A durable good is a product that is expected to last at least three years. Economists view the report cautiously because orders tend to fluctuate from month to month. Excluding transportation goods, orders rose just 0.7 percent. It was the third straight gain in so-called core orders. Demand for primary metals surged 10.3 percent, the most since last November. Some of that increase was likely due to higher prices for metals such as copper. Overall, orders rose to a seasonally adjusted $201.5 billion in July. That is 35 percent higher than the recession low hit in April 2009. But
it is still 18 percent below the level in December 2007, when the recession began. Demand for autos and auto parts jumped 11.5 percent, the most in eight years. Aircraft orders, a volatile category, soared 43.4 percent, after falling 24 percent in June. Auto production is rebounding after a slowdown caused by the Japan earthquake. The Federal Reserve reported last week that factory output rose 0.6 percent in July, mostly because of an increase in auto production. A big order by American Airlines helped boost the aircraft sector. American Airlines ordered 100 new Boeing 737 planes with fuel-efficient engines in July. Manufacturing has been a key source of economic growth since the recession officially ended in
June 2009. But it began to slump this spring, along with the broader economy. Orders fell in April and June, partly because of supply disruptions stemming from the March 11 earthquake in Japan. And a spike in gas prices earlier this year cut into consumer spending, reducing demand for big-ticket items, such as computers, appliances and furniture. Investors hope that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke announces another round of bond purchases on Friday in a highly anticipated speech in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The bond purchases, known as quantitative easing, are designed to keep interest rates low and boost stock prices. But economists don’t expect Bernanke to launch any major efforts.

A brawny B-action picture with a gorgeous, graceful woman wreaking havoc at its center: Yup, “Colombiana” is a Luc Besson movie. The director of “La Femme Nikita” and “The Fifth Element” serves as co-writer and producer here, but this is very much a spin-off of his brand, a continuation of the kind of stereotype- and gravity-defying characters he’s made his name on. “Colombiana” feels more hammy and muscular, though — but knowingly so, and that’s what makes it solid, late-summer escapist fun. Zoe Saldana stars as Cataleya, who saw her parents killed in front of her when she was just a 9-yearold schoolgirl living in the slums of Bogota. Played as a child by the intense Amandla Stenberg in her film debut, she escapes by performing a dizzying series of parkour moves across rooftops and through windows before making her way to the U.S. Embassy to vomit up the microchip her father entrusted with her. No, the film from French director Olivier Megaton (“Transporter 3”) is not subtle. As the production notes so helpfully inform us, Megaton “takes his name from his birthday: The 6th of August 1965 is the 20th anniversary of the dropping of the Hiroshima Abomb.” But certainly you weren’t looking for that, now, were you?
Anyway, 15 years later, with the help of her Uncle Emilio (Cliff Curtis), Cataleya has become a highly efficient professional assassin, but she still seeks revenge against the drug kingpin (Beto Benites) and his right-hand man (Jordi Molla) who are responsible for her parents’ deaths. The mark she leaves on her victims’ bodies — a drawing of the orchid she’s named for — is a message for her childhood enemies but it also sparks the curiosity of the FBI agent who thinks he’s tracking a serial killer. (Lennie James serves as the film’s lone source of dignity and calm in the role.) Over-the-top bad guys spew generically menacing lines and hot women parade around in bikinis and lingerie. The catlike Saldana herself kicks butt in little more than tank tops and short-shorts, and prowls around during a thrilling jail hit in the kind of skin-tight body suit she might have worn to do motion-capture work for “Avatar.” Her character also likes to suck lollipops while she’s cleaning out her guns; again, subtle. The action, meanwhile, is totally preposterous, but that’s what you pay your money to see. Cataleya seems to be both omniscient and omnipresent, capable of arming or disarming any device, adept at crawling through or climbing over any obstacle in her path without ever smudging her sexy eyeliner. In fact, there’s only one scene where she seems to be in any real danger: a visceral, bruising sequence of hand-to-hand combat featuring towels and toothbrushes reminiscent of the third “Bourne” movie.

fun of al-Qaida leaders on a previous show. Letterman, back from vacation Monday, played the threat for monologue laughs. Specialized mosquitoes may fight tropical disease Associated
Spray-on solar may be future for green energy As Japan seeks to optimize its use of environment-friendly energy sources in the wake of the nuclear crisis triggered by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, a company here may just have come up with a major breakthrough: spray-on solar cells. Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. has developed technology that enables solar cells to be applied to buildings, vehicles and even clothing in the same way that paint is applied. The breakthrough means that the places where energy from the sun can be harvested are almost limitless. The new solar cells utilize carbon compounds which, when dried and solidified, act as semiconductors and generate electricity in reaction to being exposed to light. Most existing solar cell technology requires crystalline silicon to be sandwiched between glass sheets and positioned on the roofs of homes and office buildings, or in
space-consuming “solar parks.” Scientists have been attempting to increase both the energy-gathering efficiency of solar panels and make them easier to install and use. Mitsubishi Chemical is the first company to create prototype sprayon solar cells, which at present have a practical conversion level of 10.1 percent of light energy into electricity. That figure is still some way behind the 20 percent that is standard in traditional crystalline silicon solar cells, but the firm expects to be able to improve the efficiency ratio to 15 percent by 2015 and is aiming to eventually reach 20 percent. The company said the new
painted-on solar cells would be particularly effective when applied to round or curved structures, such as chimneys or the noise-reduction barriers that line many highways in built-up areas of Japan. It could also be applied to the exteriors of cars and theoretically used to help power the vehicle and even to such flexible surfaces as clothing. The sprayed-on solar cells are less than 1 millimeter thick — far thinner than existing solar cell technology — and weigh less than onetenth of crystalline solar panels of the same size, the company said. Mitsubishi Chemical said it plans to work with domestic carmakers to build a car coated with the new solar cells with the aim of giving the vehicle sufficient power to travel 10 km after being exposed to sunlight for two hours.
NEW YORK — Scientists have made a promising advance for controlling dengue fever, a tropical disease spread by mosquito bites. They’ve rapidly replaced mosquitoes in the wild with skeeters that don’t spread the dengue virus. More than 50 million people a year get the dengue virus from being bitten by infected mosquitoes in tropical and subtropical areas, including Southeast Asia. It can cause debilitating high fever, severe headaches, and pain in the muscles and joints, and lead to a potentially fatal complication. There’s no vaccine or specific treatment. Some scientists have been trying to fight dengue by limiting mosquito populations. That was the goal in releasing genetically modified mosquitoes last year at sites in Malaysia and the Cayman Islands. Australian scientists took a different tack, they report in Thursday’s
issue of the journal Nature. First, they showed that Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, the chief carriers of the dengue virus, resist spreading that virus if they are infected with a particular kind of bacteria. Then they tested whether these resistant mosquitoes could displace their ordinary cousins in the wild, thus reducing the number of dengue-spreading mosquitoes. The resistant mosquitoes have an advantage in reproduction. Resistant females can mate with either resistant or ordinary mosquitoes, and all their offspring will be resistant. But when ordinary females mate with a resistant male, none of the offspring survive. For the experiment, scientists released more than 140,000 resistant mosquitoes over 10 weeks in each of two isolated communities near Cairns in northeastern Australia, starting last January. By mid-April, monitoring found that resistant mosquitoes made up 90 percent to 100 percent of the wild population.

BBM Music service unveiled by RIM There’s been a bit of chatter about it in recent days, and now Research In Motion (RIM) has confirmed details of what it’s calling its “music sharing and discovery service.” Called BBM Music (BlackBerry Messenger Music), the cloud-based music service will cost users $4.99 a month and enable subscribers to share songs through the BlackBerry instant messaging service. Details of BBM Music were released today in a statement issued by the Ontario-based company. Users can choose from millions of songs from leading record companies such as Universal, Sony Music, Warner and EMI. The statement explains that
should you sign up, you’ll be able to build a personal music profile with 50 of your top tracks. When your BBM friends sign up, they can join your BBM Music Community. Up to 50 tracks from your personal profile are then shared with members of your community. It was a small but hugely important step to redemption for Wenger, who has revolutionised the club in his 15-year reign but has been criticised like never before after six trophyless seasons. “We live in a society where everybody has an opinion on everything. Spain’s football league said on Thursday it is “optimistic” of reaching a deal to end a players’ strike after marathon talks stretching into the early morning. The strike over unpaid players’ wages delayed the start to the lucrative Liga — the first delay to the season in 27 years — and now clubs are trying to stop the action spreading to a second match day. Players’ and clubs’ representatives broke off 12 hours of talks in the early morning, citing exhaustion, and were meeting again Thursday morning in the hope of snapping the deadlock. “The important thing is that we have been here bringing the positions closer together,” said the president of the Professional Football League (LFP), Jose Luis Astiazaran. “I hope we will be able to cancel this strike, if we have the capacity and opportunity to reach a deal,” he said. A visibly tired Astiazaran, whose LFP represents the clubs, said the two sides had advanced in the overnight talks but had decided to take a rest before resuming. “I am fairly optimistic that tomorrow we will carry on working and try to reach an agreement,” he said. Players, too, reported progress. “We have been working many hours and those hours have led to advances,” Luis Gil, spokesman of the Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE), told reporters as he emerged from the talks before dawn. “I think we are working very hard. Man United’s Ferguson ends BBC boycott Reuters
LONDON - Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has ended his long boycott of BBC interviews, the Premier League champions said on Thursday. Ferguson stopped speaking to Britain’s national broadcaster both on television and radio in 2004 after it ran a programme about his son Jason, then a soccer agent. “Sir Alex Ferguson and the BBC have decided to put behind them the difficulties which led to Sir Alex feeling unable to appear on BBC programmes,” a club statement said. “This follows a meeting between Sir Alex and the BBC’s director general, Mark Thompson, and BBC North director Peter Salmon, and the issues have been resolved to the satisfaction of both parties.” Ferguson faced a series of escalating fines for the boycott, which went against protocol whereby managers and players must make themselves available to broadcasters who pay to cover matches. No details were given on the reasons why Ferguson has changed his stance.

It marked the first time Djokovic was seeded number one for the year’s final grand slam. Djokovic has never won the U.S. Open but has been in great form this year, losing just two matches all season and winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Defending U.S. Open champion Rafa Nadal was seeded second as tournament organizers stuck with their practice of following the official world rankings to decide the seedings. McLaren aims to improve qualifying form Jenson Button
McLaren is confident that new updates for the MP426 will help the team improve its qualifying performance at Spa-Francorchamps this weekend and the following race at Monza. While the team’s race pace has often been at least a match for Red Bull during races, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button’s starting positions have often compromised their race plans, and subsequent potential results this season. McLaren’s managing director Jonathan Neale insists that McLaren’s qualifying form has been improving however, and predicts further progress at the Belgian Grand Prix as the team aim to maintain the pressure on Red Bull. “In terms of closing the gap to red Bull, we have had a competitive race car for some time now,” Neale told a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes phone-in on Wednesday. “The qualifying pace is where we have been falling short. “I’m pleased to say that - except for the slight blip at the British Grand Prix – the trend has been good and we have been closing in. “We haven’t got the cars in the right part of
the grid, but we are developing at a better rate and there are a series of upgrades planned for these next two races.” Neale said part of the disparity between McLaren’s relative pace in qualifying and races could be explained by the design concept of the DRS wing, which can be optimised either for race balance or for one-lap speed. “To make the optimum rear wing you wouldn’t make a DRS-enabled rear wing – it’s not as aero efficient,” he explained. “You have a choice to make: do you want to the get the downforce and aero efficiency from the car, or are you after the greater drag reduction? “Now that we have got ourselves into a situation where we believe we are competitive, we have been able to devote time to the DRS system and my expectations are that our DRS system will be competitive at the next few races. “However, what we try to do is add performance to the car in a variety of ways – there is no one way of doing it and there is certainly no magic bullet. “Our workforce, our drivers, our sponsors and our fans expect us to fight through to the last race. That’s what McLaren is here to do – to run deep into the season and to win races.
Senna replaces Heidfeld at Renault BRUNO Senna will return to Formula 1 at this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix as the replacement for Nick Heidfeld at the Renault team. As AUTOSPORT reported on Monday, Renault had decided over the summer break that it wanted to shake up its driver line-up - and hoped to move Senna into a race seat alongside Vitaly Petrov instead of Heidfeld. The matter was complicated, however, by the fact that
Heidfeld was not willing to simply walk away from his deal at the team - especially because there seemed little reason to dismiss him on performance grounds as he was ahead of Petrov in the points’ standings. Following intense discussions between representatives of both Renault and Heidfeld over the past 48 hours, however, an interim settlement was reached on Wednesday night – leaving the way open for Senna to be given the green light to race in Belgium. A statement issued by Renault said that it was only confirming Senna for this weekend’s race in Spa – with the team’s plans for the rest of the season expected to be announced on Thursday. “Bruno will attend the Official FIA Press Conference tomorrow at 15.00. A press release with further details on the matter will be issued tomorrow morning,” said Renault. Senna’s chances of keeping hold of the seat for the rest of the campaign will likely depend on his level of competitiveness, because Renault has made no secret of the fact that it is looking at handing GP2 Series leader Romain Grosjean another F1 chance. Speculation has already suggested that Grosjean could be drafted in at the team after the GP2 campaign finishes at Monza – which means he could do some of the final flyaway races of this year.
