Vin Diesel test drives new ‘Fast & Furious’ ride
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — “Fast & Furious” star Vin Diesel traded the franchise’s signature muscle cars for a new kind of ride. The actor, along with co-stars Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Jason Statham, unveiled Universal Studio Hollywood’s latest attraction: “Fast & Furious — Supercharged,” which opened to the public on Wednesday. “I’m more excited than anybody to get on that tram and I want to be in the front seat and I want to know what this thing feels like,” said Diesel during a press preview for the ride on Tuesday. “Supercharged” is a 3-D motion
addition to the park’s classic studio tour tram ride. Stars of the films take guests on an explosion-packed car chase using hydraulics and HD images projected on a massive 360degree screen. Riders are blasted with wind, fog and mist as they attempt a high-speed escape through crashing cars and gunfire. “I know when we were making it, it felt like we were creating something that I had never experienced. opening the ride with a ceremony, which included pyrotechnics and car stunts. “I’m really excited to get in there and feel it out and get that adrenaline pumping.” During his speech to the crowd, Diesel dedicated the ride to his “Fast & Furious” co-star Paul Walker, who died in a car crash in 2013. He said production will begin on “Furious 8” in 2016. “It feels like we’re beyond having to prove that it’s a worthy saga and it feels like we can focus on making it the best film in history and that’s what we’re going for,” Diesel told reporters on the ride’s red carpet. Statham was tight-lipped about the next film, but teased a possible return of his imprisoned character, Ian Shaw. “Anything is possible in the movies, you know that,” said Statham. “Unless you’re dead, which Shaw wasn’t dead. So you know there’s a few ways we can resuscitate him. We can get him out of that prison in more ways than one, don’t you worry about that.” Diesel previously announced that the 8th installment will be released on April 14, 2017. (ap)
Suit filed against Bobbi Kristina Brown’s partner
ATLANTA — A court-appointed representative of Bobbi Kristina Brown has filed a lawsuit against her partner, Nick Gordon, claiming he took money from her and abused her physically and emotionally. Bedilia Hargrove filed a lawsuit against Gordon Wednesday in Fulton County Superior Court. The complaint says Gordon routinely transferred large amounts of money from Brown’s accounts to his without Brown’s permission. The complaint also accused
Gordon of misrepresenting his relationship with Brown, being violent toward her and taking more than $11,000 from her account after she was found face down in a bathtub at her suburban Atlanta townhome. Gordon is accused of assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, unjust enrichment and conversion. The suit seeks at least $10 million in damages. A call to Gordon’s attorney was not immediately returned. (ap)
Billie Joe Armstrong, Norah Jones perform rare show
NEW YORK — Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and singer Norah Jones appeared in a rare concert together Wednesday night, playing songs they recorded for an album two years ago. The concert wasn’t widely announced and the two performed for about 200 fans in a cellar-like setting called the Bowery Electric in Manhattan. The hour-long performance included songs from their 2013 album, “Foreverly,” a collection of songs inspired by “Songs Our Daddy Taught Us,” an album released by The Everly Brothers in 1958.
Armstrong played guitar and sang, while Jones switched between guitar and piano. The duo’s band also included drums, a standup bass and, at times, a violin and a harmonica. Together, their voices made for a soothing performance far different than Armstrong’s rock performances with Green Day, which was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. No other performances were announced. Jones’ band, Puss N Boots, is slated to open for Neil Young during a series of dates in July. (ap)

Government unserious to achieve quality tourism
DENPASAR - All this time Bali tourism is sold cheaply and in a mass. Hotels massively make price war by offering low prices to travelers. As a result, Bali tourism becomes a mass tourism, much visited by travelers. But in terms of quality, it is very low where they have ever-declining length of stay. On the other hand, commitment of the government to realize the quality tourism remains in the level of discourse only and there is no serious commitment to make it happen. “How will we realize quality tourism when the permit of hotel construction in South Bali is still sold out? In other words, the government is unserious to realize the quality tourism. We will be continuously stuck in mass tourism and it is very dangerous for the future of Bali tourism,” said a member of Commission IV of the Bali House, Wayan Rawan Atmaja. The man having a wealth of ex-
perience in tourism field added that the government should change the mindset of tourism development by not selling out licenses of accommodation in South Bali and may not allow tourism development to be centered in the crowded region. Distribution and dissemination of tourism development, for example, to East Bali and North Bali is absolutely necessary. Rather than selling out hotel permits, the government should focus on organizing and reorganizing tourist destinations in Bali and equips them with facilities and infrastructure. “Do not let it look like today
where many tourist destinations are not well organized, they have inadequate facilities and some road infrastructures to the attractions are damaged,” said this Golkar politician from Nusa Dua. It also covers
basic quality determinant such as safety and comfort, hygiene, accessibility, transparency and authenticity as well as the harmony of tourism activity considering human and environment. According to her, the most fundamental challenges and constraints are whether we have been ready for this quality tourism. Do the whole societies understand about the meaning and importance of quality tourism? In the meantime, the tourism awareness must still continue to be encouraged through a variety of counseling and seven charms so that it can touch all levels of society for preparing resources that are competent in the field of tourism. “On that account, common perception of tourism stakeholders is indispensable in order to reach qual-
ity tourism. Joint commitment of all parties concerned is so required and does not only require the real steps of the government,” she said. The current challenge, she added, is whether all the stakeholders have owned common perceptions on this quality tourism. Furthermore, it needs studying more profoundly whether Bali has been ready to reach quality tourism considering the existing tourism supply must undeniably require a return on investment. Beyonce, The Weeknd to headline Jay Z’s Made In America fest
NEW YORK — Beyonce is heading back to Jay Z’s Made in America festival this September. Organizers also announced Wednesday the pop diva and R&B singer The Weeknd will headline the Budweiser Made in America festival over Labor Day weekend
in Philadelphia. The festival debuted in 2012, and Beyonce headlined in 2013. Last year included Kanye West in Philadelphia, when the festival also stretched to Los Angeles, where it will not return this year.
Jay Z’s two-day festival Sept. 5 and 6 across the Benjamin Franklin Parkway will also include Axwell & Ingrosso, J. Cole, Bassnectar, Modest Mouse, Big Sean, Death Cab for Cutie and Meek Mill. Tickets go on sale Monday. (ap)
