JRR Tolkien’s family hit out at new film about Lord Of The Rings and Hobbit author THE family of author JRR Tolkien have said they do not approve of the upcoming biopic film made about his life. Famed for creating The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings, the British author’s fantasy works have created a global franchise of films. Tolkien, the biopic of his own life starring Nicholas Hoult, is due to premiere in the UK next week. Ahead of the red carpet event, the author’s family have issued a statement - their first regarding the film - saying they do not endorse the Fox Searchlight production “in any way”. The Tolkien Estate statement said: “The family of JRR Tolkien and the Tolkien Estate are aware of the Fox Searchlight motion picture entitled Tolkien that is due for

release in May 2019. “The family and the Estate wish to make clear that they did not approve of, authorise or participate in the making of this film. “They do not endorse it or its content in any way.” The new film charts the author’s early life, his friendships with fellow writers and his relationship with wife Edith Bratt, played by Lily Collins, covering the experiences that would later inspire his famous novels. Relatives of Tolkien are understood to consistently turn down approaches to make biopics. The Tolkien Estate comprises a company which manages publishing interests and a charitable trust which makes grants to causes including alleviating poverty. (net)

Avengers assemble for final battle in ‘Endgame’

LOS ANGELES - After nearly two dozen films and billions of dollars in ticket sales around the globe, the Avengers are gearing up for a final time -- and their last adventure could shatter all box office records.

“Avengers: Endgame” is the final installment of a wildly ambitious 22-film arc featuring the beloved superheroes of the Marvel universe, many of them the creations of late comic book legend Stan Lee. It hits theaters this week -- parts of Asia and Europe get the first view of the three-hour epic on Wednesday, and it gets its wide release in the US and Canada on Friday. Pundits are predicting a debut weekend that could break records with the first billion-dollar opening in history.

That would easily beat out the previous record holder, “Avengers: Infinity War,” the first part of the “Infinity Saga” -- as it was dubbed by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, who has produced every single movie in the franchise -- which opened in 2018 with $640.5 million. After Monday’s star-studded world premiere in Hollywood, the six original Avengers celebrated the end of the road Tuesday at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett

Johansson), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) assembled for a final time with Feige at the TCL Chinese Theatre, where they signed blocks of cement and marked them with handprints. “It’s been an amazing ride,” Ruffalo -- who attempted a handstand while waiting for the cement to set -- said of the 10-year project. The 21 preceding films have earned about $19 billion globally, and though “Endgame” marks the end of the current narrative arc, Marvel Studios is far from through. (afp)

A soldier stands guard outside St. Anthony’s Shrine in Colombo on April 25, 2019, following a series of bomb blasts targeting churches and luxury hotels on the Easter Sunday in Sri Lanka. All of Sri Lanka’s Catholic churches have been ordered to stay closed and suspend services until security improves after deadly Easter bombings, which killed at least 359 people and wounded hundreds, a senior priest told AFP on April 25.

Sri Lanka halts low season visa-free plan after bombings

Sri Lanka’s government said Thursday it was suspending plans to grant citizens of 39 countries visa-free entry during the country’s tourism low season after deadly Easter bombings that killed hundreds. “Although arrangements were in place to issue visas on arrival for citizens of 39 countries, we have now decided to hold it for the time being in consideration of the current security situation,” Tourism Minister John Amaratunga said in

a statement. “Investigations have revealed foreign links to the (Easter) attacks and we don’t want this programme to be abused.” Sri Lanka had announced last month a plan to allow visa-free

entry to tourists from 39 countries, including EU members, Australia and the United States, during the low season, from May 1. The scheme did not include China and India, from where many of Sri Lanka’s visitors come. The devastating Easter Sunday suicide bombings against churches and hotels killed 359 people, including dozens of foreigners. The blasts have rocked the coun-

try’s burgeoning tourism industry, which is one of the most important foreign exchange earners for the island. Sri Lanka received 740,600 foreign tourists in the first three months of the year, up 4.6 percent from the same period a year earlier. It welcomed a record 2.33 million tourists in 2018, and was named the world’s top travel des-

tination for 2019 by the Lonely Planet guide book. (afp) News can also be heard in “Bali Image” at Global Radio FM 96.5 from 9.30 until 10.00 am.
