Madonna loses bid to stop auction of intimate items

NEW YORK - Madonna lost Monday a nearly year-long bid to stop an auction of intimate items, including a breakup letter from rap legend Tupac Shakur.

A judge ruled that the Material Girl had directed her legal action against the wrong target in going after Darlene Lutz, a New York art dealer who helped Madonna build a collection before falling out with her.

Lutz had been the main source for 22 items, including love letters, cassettes and a hairbrush, that were up for sale by auction house Gotta Have Rock and Roll until a judge issued an injunction in July.

New York Judge Gerald Lebovits, in a ruling based on narrow legal grounds rather than on Madonna’s claims of violations of privacy, agreed with Lutz, who said that her disputes with Madonna were settled by a 2004 legal agreement between the former friends.

Lebovits, in a decision dated last week but made public Monday, also questioned why Madonna was pursuing Lutz and not the singer’s assistants, who Madonna said had handed items to the art dealer.

“If plaintiff’s allegations are accepted as true -- that Lutz received the letters through inadvertent actions of the plaintiff’s assistants,” Lebovits wrote, then her case against Lutz is “time-barred and improper.”

The auction house said it would press ahead in July with the sale of Madonna merchandise including the offending letter from Tupac.

In a statement, Gotta Have Rock and Roll said it had been confident about the case and had done “substantial due diligence” before first announcing the auction.

Judd Grossman, a lawyer for Lutz, called the court decision “a total win.”

“Ms Lutz is now free to do with her property as she pleases without any continued interference by Madonna,” Grossman said.

Indonesia oil well explosion kills 15, dozens injured

The death toll from an illegal oil well blaze in Indonesia has jumped to 15 with dozens injured, authorities said Wednesday, warning that there could be more victims of the explosion. Images from the accident showed a towering flame shooting some 70 metres (230 feet) in the air above homes and palm trees dotting a small community in Sumatra island’s Aceh province.

Firefighters on Wednesday afternoon were still battling the blaze sparked by an oil spill at about 1:30 am (1830 GMT Tuesday) in a residential area. Several homes were also destroyed. “The number of fatalities now stands at 15 people,” said Syahrizal Fauzi, head of the local disaster

mitigation agency. “We’re still unable to control the fire. We don’t know if there are still victims because we cannot get any closer.” Authorities initially said at least 10 people died and some 40 “severely injured” victims were being treated.

Saudi king to launch ‘entertainment city’

RIYADH - Saudi King Salman will launch the construction of an “entertainment city” near Riyadh Wednesday, authorities said, part of a series of multi-billion dollar projects as the kingdom seeks to diversity its oil-reliant economy.

The 334-square kilometre project in Qiddiya, southwest of Riyadh, would rival Walt Disney and include high-end theme parks, motor sport facilities and a safari park, officials say.

The facility highlights a “relentless effort to develop giga-projects that will help achieve many direct and indirect economic returns”, project official Fahd bin Abdullah Tounsi was quoted as saying in a government statement on Monday.

Qiddiya chief executive Michael Reininger said he expects the project will draw foreign investors in entertainment and other sectors, but did not specify the total cost of construction.

Such projects are the brainchild of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, a self-styled liberal change agent who is the chief architect of the sweeping “Vi-

sion 2030” reform programme.

Saudi Arabia has dazzled investors with several plans for hi-tech “giga projects”, funded in part by its sovereign wealth fund, but some sceptics question their viability in an era of cheap oil.

The kingdom has unveiled blueprints to build NEOM, a mega project billed as a regional Silicon Valley, in addition to the Red Sea project, a reef-fringed resort destination -- both worth hundreds of billions of dollars. Analysts say the projects could create funding pressures at a time when the government faces a yawning budget deficit and growth in the kingdom’s non-oil economy is only slowly gathering pace.

The reform stems partly from an economic motive to boost domestic spending on entertainment as the kingdom has been reeling from an oil slump since 2014.

First open debate to be held on April 28

DENPASAR — The open debate of the candidate pair of governor and deputy governor of Bali has been confirmed for three times. It will be respectively held on April 28, May 26, and June 22. The three debates will be carried out in starred hotels and broadcast live by three television stations. Raka Sandi continued there is no re-broadcast, delayed broadcast or edited broadcast related to the debate. If there are candidate pairs editing the debate broadcast and disseminating it on social media, it is the same as breaking the agreement. Moreover, Bali Electoral Commission always listens to suggestions from the winning team of each candidate pair.

“It is limited so that there

will be no substantial shift of the debate or information that is not intact, so that it can result in miscommunication in the community,” he said.

Chairman of Bali Electoral Commission (KPU), I Dewa Kade Wiarsa Raka Sandi, said the first debate will be held at Goodway Hotels & Resorts, Nusa Dua, on Saturday (Apr. 28) starting at 19:30 local time. The event will be broadcast live by TVOne and moderated by Indiarto Priadi.

“The main issue to be raised in this first debate is to advance and resolve regional issues, with sub-themes of economy, tourism, agriculture and the environment,” he said in a press statement at the office of Bali Electoral Commission on Tuesday (Apr. 24).

According to Raka Sandi, the Bali Electoral Commission has previously prepared and formed a drafting team from a number of universities. Among them, there is Undiknas University for material formulation team and questions with economic subtheme, Udayana University for agriculture and environmental subtheme, as well as Bali Tourism Institute (STP) Nusa Dua for tourism sub-themes.

CONTEMPORARY Makepung (Buffalo Race) dance is now often performed simultaneously with jegog gamelan music. In various arts and performing events, the dance depicting the tradition of Makepung returns to be encouraged. Some time ago in a cultural parade, the dance was staged colossally with hundreds of dancers consisting of junior high and high school students.

This contemporary dance created by I Ketut Suwentra or better known Grandpa Jegog first appeared in 1984. The dance became a final assignment to obtain baccalaureate degree in the Denpasar Art

College (ASTI). This dance reflects the agrarian culture of Jembrana especially the makepung attraction.

Generally, this dance is played by around seven dancers consisting of three men and four women. The dancers have their respective roles describing the movement in the buffalo race. Four dancers serve as a wheel, a dancer as buffalo and respectively a dancer as coachman and buffalo rider.

Movement of this contemporary dance tends to be different from the dances in general. The dancer who plays buffalo, for instance, shows dance movement like a walking, drinking and bathing buffalo and

Makepung Dance depicts buffalo races with Jegog accompaniment others expressed through the graceful dance movement. In terms of their costumes, the female dancers generally put on a number of accessories used by buffalo while competing, including rustling bells mounted on the legs. In the staging, from the beginning to the end spectators can experience typical atmosphere of Jembrana. Moreover, this dance is accompanied with Jegog music which is also one of the Jembrana characteristics. When danced together, people can see the movements ranging from preparation before the race to the implementation of the buffalo race. The longer, the rhythm of gamelan music is getting faster.

This Makepung Dance is often staged intactly in a number of cultural events including the cultural parade some time ago, tailored to the venue of the staging. Thus, it involved hundreds of students.

ANZAC Day Commemoration 2018

The Australian Consulate-General in Bali, along with representatives of the New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta, held a small dawn service this morning to commemorate Anzac Day. Each year on 25 April, Australians and New Zealanders gather to remember the servicemen and women who have served their nation in times of war, in conflicts and on peacekeeping operations.

The Anzac tradition was established on 25 April 1915 when,more than 100 years ago,thousands of young Australian and New Zealand Army Corps troops landed on the shores of Gallipoli in Turkey at dawn

to begin a hard-fought campaign that lasted eight months.The anniversary of the landing is observed by Australians and New Zealanders at ceremonies around the world.

“As we pause to honour the past and the Anzac spirit, we also recognise today’s veterans, the young men and women who have returned from places like Afghanistan and Iraq.

We honour their sacrifice through our remembrance” said Australian Consul-General, Dr Helena Studdert. ”The Anzac spirit lives in the hearts and minds of all Australians as we acknowledge the courage and

sacrifice of those who contributed so much in shaping the identity of our proud nation” added Dr Studdert.

The Anzac Day ceremony at the Australian Consulate-General was attended by Counsellor of New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta, Ms Barbara Welton, representatives of the Australian Defence Force, crew members from HMAS Broome and representatives of the Bali Provincial Government, Kodam IX Udayana, LanudNgurah Rai, Dan LanalBanyuwangi,Polda Bali, Badung and the Denpasar Government, as well as more than 200 Australians and New Zealanders in Bali.

Beer breath: Drinking alcohol may give you more than bad breath DRINKING alcohol can give you more than strong breath — it may mess up the balance of good versus bad bacteria in your mouth, researchers reported Monday.

That, in turn, can raise the risk not only of gum disease and cavities, but also of cancer and heart disease, they said.

Their findings, published in the journal Microbiome, could help explain why people who drink more may die younger than people who drink less, and why drinking can cause cancer.

“Our study offers clear evidence that drinking is bad for maintaining a healthy balance of microbes in the mouth and could help explain why drinking, like smoking, leads to bacterial changes already tied to cancer and chronic disease,” Jiyoung Ahn, an epidemiologist at NYU Langone Health’s Perlmutter Cancer Center, said in a statement.

“My report provides another scientific rationale for avoiding excessive alcohol drinking,” she added in a telephone interview.

Drinking alcohol kills off many “good” bacteria, and allows some potentially harmful bacteria to flourish in the mouth, they found.

“Such changes potentially contribute to alcoholrelated diseases, including periodontal disease, head and neck cancer, and digestive tract cancers,” the team wrote.

Although people who drink lightly to moderately appear healthier than people who don’t drink at all, more and more studies are starting to show that even moderate drinking can damage health.

Drinkers are more likely to develop a range of cancers, as well as heart disease, and alcohol’s stress on the liver is well known.

Heavy drinkers also notoriously can lose teeth and develop gum disease. Ahn’s team set out to determine whether some or all of these various types of damage are due to alcohol’s effect on the microbiome in the mouth.

Microbiomes are the collection of microorganisms, including bacteria, yeast and viruses, that live in and on our bodies. They help digest food, can protect from disease and might cause disease, as well. (net)

Garbage piles up along road to Trunyan

Sedana Arta asks people to keep environmental clean

BANGLI - Large number of garbage accumulating along the road in Abang Batudinding to Terunyan village, Kintamani, is very much deplored by Deputy Regent of Bangli, Sang Nyoman Sedana Arta. Seeing that condition, he asked all the local people to be more aware so as not to litter, but take care to keep the environment clean and sustainable.

Sedana Arta revealed he knows there is a lot of garbage scattered on the roadside after crossing the path a few days ago. He saw a lot of garbage accumulating at some points along the road. Such condition is also considered to make the area look shabby. “There is a lot of garbage scattered there, not only plastic waste, but also organic waste scattered so that it makes the location look very dirty due to the piles of garbage,” he said recently.

This official from Sulahan Susut hoped people not to throw garbage carelessly again and follow to keep the environment clean. So, along the path can be clean and free from

garbage. Moreover, the road access is often passed through by tourists wishing to visit Terunyan. “We hope people are more aware that they may not dispose of garbage by the roadside as can disturb the scenery and comfort of passersby.

Besides, the garbage can contaminate the surrounding environment,” explained Sedana Arta.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Bangli Environment Agency, Ida Ayu Gde Yuhi Sutha, explained there is a village fund allocation (ADD) that can be taken advantage to overcome the environmental problems. On that account, she hoped that all the communities to participate in maintaining the sanitation of the surrounding environment. “Let us jointly maintain the environmental sanitation in order to stay clean because without the awareness of the community itself it will be difficult to create a beautiful environment. A large study founds that measuring blood pressure at home is a much stronger predictor of death than the blood pressure reading taken at the doctor’s office.

FOR people whose blood pressure rises when measured at the doctor’s office — a condition known as “white coat hypertension” — there may be a real reason to worry, new research shows.

White coat hypertension, which may affect up to 30 percent of Americans, occurs when the blood pressure reading at the doctor’s office is higher than it is when checked at home or other settings. It was once thought that it was just the temporary stress of being at the doctor that caused a spike and that it didn’t indicate a bigger problem.

But the risk of death was nearly twice as high for patients with

white coat hypertension, compared to patients whose blood pressure is normal when taken at the doctor’s office and at home, the report published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Wednesday shows.

“White-coat hypertension is not benign,” said Dr. Haitham Ahmed, medical director of cardiac rehabilitation at Cleveland Clinic, who was not a part of the study. “If seeing a white coat increases your blood pressure, a lot of other stressors in life are expected to as well.”

Researchers from the Autonomous University of Madrid, who followed 64,000 people over five years, concluded that blood pressure measurements taken at home

regularly were a stronger predictor of cardiovascular deaths than doctor’s office readings.

“We don’t want to dismiss white coat hypertension,” said Dr. Raymond Townsend, director of the hypertension program at Penn Medicine and author of the study’s editorial via email. “We encourage our patients to do blood pressure readings at home. That is a good way to not only monitor blood pressure where you actually “live”, but it also provides a lot of insight for patients to understand how life’s little indiscretions, like take-out Chinese with extra soy sauce, can truly affect your blood pressure the next day.” (net)

TABANAN - After getting rejection from some people in Baturiti, the target of 100 percent for JE immunization in Tabanan was finally reached. Based on the data as of April 23, the achievement has reached 100.52 percent or exceeded the target determined by the Ministry of Health.

Head of the Tabanan Health Agency, Nyoman Suratmika, said on Tuesday (Apr. 24) that since the beginning, Tabanan indeed targeting the achievement of JE immunization for 100 percent or achieve all the targets specified by the Ministry of Health even though the ministry itself targeted the JE immunization for Bali is 95 percent.

Related to the exceeding percentage of achievement, Suratmika said it means that Tabanan managed to cover the real data in the field. This indicates the officers work harder in reaching the children of age

target (18 months to 15 years) in Tabanan. “The target data provided by the Ministry of Health are the data from the Center for Data and Information (Pusdatin).

However, the real conditions in the field could be more.

Thankfully, we managed to achieve this,” explained Suratmika.

Implementation of the JE immunization itself, said Suratmika, will remain to be done even though the achievement has exceeded the target. JE immunization period goes until the end of April 2018. According to Suratmika, despite exceeding the target, the officers will still make a sweep to the field so the age target of children who have not received immunization can be reached. He estimated there are still children having not been immunized for some reasons, such as of being sick, traveling and family remaining to reject the JE immunization for their children. Versatility of chicken that can be fried with flour-coated, made into betutu (steamed) chicken or chicken in coconut gravy and processed with various spices makes it so popular like a staple food.

Actually, chicken has long been manipulated to grow in accordance with the needs of many markets. No exception, it is provided with animal feed containing Antibiotic Growth Promoters (AGP). This AGP administration makes chicken weight increase faster. However, in reality the AGP administration has a negative impact on human health.

A professor of andrology and sexology, Prof. Dr. Wimpie Pangkahila, revealed that beyond estimation of many people the food ingredients coming into human body have bad impact on the body.

For examples, the supplements containing substances are not good for the body, including herbs that are not passing through research, are not recommended.

Similarly, antibiotics in animal feed are not good because they are not always needed. “Moreover, animal feed contains hormones, while we do not need such a hormone. Of course it is dangerous,” he said.

Another example is food containing estrogen hormone eaten by boys. Surely, they will get excessive estrogenic hormone. If boys have it excessively, his genital development will be disrupted or hampered. Usually, they will be fatty, their breasts grow, penis does not develop and so does his testis.

“Some of those ingredients around us come into our bodies including supplements that are sold freely.

Some of which are unhealthy due to containing estrogenic hormone, not to mention other foods that are sold freely containing the ingredients such as hormones or other ingredients which is not needed like

antibiotics,” he explained.

Division Head of Livestock Breeding and Production at the Bali Livestock and Animal Health Agency, IKG Nata Kusuma, said the use of AGP does not only make livestock growth faster, but also has a negative impact on humans that consume it. For instance, it can cause hypersensitive, carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic effect in animals or humans. “Carcinogens are substances that cause cancer, so that it is very dangerous for humans,” he said.

He said this use does not have negative impact on humans provided that 14 days before slaughtering the AGP administration is stopped, so there is no residue in the animal. “However, what happens in the field is that breeders are frequently not disciplined where they continuously give this antibiotic before slaughtering. Definitely, the residue on meat will be risky if consumed by humans. Therefore, the use of antibiotics is prohibited,” he explained.

Police in the southern city of Shenzhen have detained 10 suspects, mostly from Hong Kong, following an investigation that began in July 2017, the Guangdong province public security department said.

The statement, released Tuesday, called it the “biggest amount of cocaine seized in the country”.

The official Xinhua news agency said the massive haul had a street value of one billion yuan ($160 million).

The drug came from an unidentified South American country and was shipped to the Guangdong port of Shanwei.

The police statement, released Tuesday, did not say whether the drug was destined for the Chinese market or another country, but cocaine use is low in China compared to other drugs.

A 2017 government report found that China had 2.5 million drug users, with 60 percent consuming synthetic drugs, 38 percent using opiates and 1.4 percent using co-

caine and marijuana.

Cocaine originates in the Andes but China is believed to be one of the main manufacturers of synthetic drugs -- including opioids such as fentanyl -- which have been blamed for public health crises in the US, Canada and Australia among other countries.

The Shenzhen investigation began in July 2017 after police received a tip related to drug trafficking, the Guangdong public security statement said.

A month later, a task force learned that gangs were about to conduct a “large scale” drug delivery. Five suspects, including three from Hong Kong, were detained and 40 kilogrammes of cocaine were seized.

In February, the investigation led to the arrest of three more suspects and the seizure of another 1,291 kilogrammes of cocaine.

Inuka, first polar bear born in the tropics, is put down SINGAPORE - Inuka, the first polar bear born in the tropics, was put down Wednesday after a rapid decline in health, with Singapore Zoo mourning the loss of one of its best-loved animals.

The bear, whose name means “Silent Stalker” in Inuit, had reached the grand old age of 27 -- into his 70s in human years and two years older than the average lifespan of the creatures in captivity.

Born at the zoo, Inuka was particularly popular with visitors due to his playful antics in his enclosure.

But in recent years the animal had suffered age-related ailments, including arthritis, and an examination at the start of this month revealed his health was failing markedly.

His weakened limbs had trouble supporting his body and he developed cuts on his paws and a wound on his abdomen.

After a final check-up, vets found that Inuka’s health had not improved despite intensive treatment and decided not to revive him from anaesthesia.

“Singaporeans have known Inuka from the time he was a cub, and have seen him growing up and ageing,” said Mohan Ponichamy, one of his keepers.

“It has been a privilege and honour being his care giver, but difficult as it may be, it would not have been fair to prolong his suffering.”

The bear had been put on a “seniors programme” at the zoo for the past five years, to help elderly animals deal with the effects of ageing.

He had slowed down in recent months, and became less interested in his daily playing sessions.

Inuka was born on December 26, 1990. His father Nanook was caught in the wild and came from Canada and his mother, Sheeba, came from a German zoo.

His death marks the end of an era for the zoo, which has said it will not keep any more polar bears in its collection.

As few as 22,000 polar bears are thought to remain in the wild, according to environmental group WWF. Protection group the International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies them as a vulnerable species.

They are typically found in places with cold climates such as Greenland, and parts of Canada and Russia -- making Singapore, where daytime temperatures rarely dip below 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit), an unusual location for the creatures to live. (afp)

“Whether we will go ahead on our own requires in-depth study,” said Toyota China CEO Kazuhiro Kobayashi, citing local government regulations, procurement of parts and other issues.

Britain’s Lloyds Banking Group, bailed out by the government during the global financial crisis, on Wednesday logged strong first-quarter profits on the back of the “resilient” UK economy. Earnings after taxation, or net profits, jumped 29 percent to £1.15 billion ($1.61 billion, 1.31 billion euros) in the three months to the end of March from a year earlier, the lender said in a results statement.

Nampin or chewing betel leaves is one of the traditions that remains strong amongst Balinese elders. According to one respected elder named Ni Ketut Darma, who still chews betel leaves everyday, tradtionally the ingredients for betwel chewing are kept in a special betel nut box called pabuan or pecanangan. “When we use this box at home we call it pabuan, but when we serve guests we call this penginangan, using more refined language” she explained.

According to Grandma Darma, the betel nut box is made of wood in the long side shape where it generally consists of some compartments containing lime, betel leaves, gambier, betel nut, betel nut mortar and pestle or panyawisan, small knife, and caket (used to halve areca nut). She said that in the past the betel nut box was the first thing to be served to guests who came or when visiting other people’s homes.

“Presenting betel nut box and nampin has become a tradition in the life of Balinese people, until now this tradition remains to be implemented especially by parents like me,” she said.

She added the betel nut box is not only served at home, but also at temple with a different designation. At temple, it is called pacanangan, functioned as the offerings presented to deities. Pabuan and pacanangan is basically not the same. Pabuan served at home usually contains lime, gambier, betel leaf, betel nut, betel nut mortar and pestle, small

knife, and caket, while the pecanangan at temple has the same contents with additional ingredients like thread, money and fruits.

When asked about how she feels when doing nampin, she just claimed to be accustomed to

doing it. Men and women of her age usually do it. It is tasteless but the lips feel abrasive. It feels nothing due to the mixture with lime. “Our lips are abrasive, but I have been accustomed to the taste,” she said. (kmb)

Armenian opposition leader says ‘ready to lead’ country

YEREVAN - Armenian opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan on Tuesday said he was ready to lead the country after the shock resignation of Prime Minister Serzh Sarkisian following eleven days of protests against his rule.

“Yes of course we are ready to lead our country,” Pashinyan said at a news conference in Yerevan, after being asked whether he was willing to steer the government of the ex-Soviet South Caucasus country.

“If people will bestow on me this responsibility, I’ll assume the responsibility,” Pashinyan said.

Sarkisian stunned the country on Monday by standing down from his new post as prime minister.

He had previously spent a decade in power as president and was accused of a blatant power grab by the opposition, who staged days of rallies in protest.

According to Armenian law, lawmakers in the parliament, where Sarkisian’s Republican Party have a majority, have a week to propose new candidates for PM and could hold a vote on May 2.

Canada van massacre driver charged with murder, most victims women

TORONTO - A Canadian man who apparently had a grudge against women was charged with murder Tuesday after allegedly plowing a rented van onto a crowded Toronto sidewalk, killing 10 people -- an incident that shocked the nation.

Police said the suspect, 25-yearold Alek Minassian, was not known to them before Monday’s carnage in Canada’s most populous city, which also left 14 people injured. Most of the victims were women.

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale played down any suggestion that the attack bore the hallmarks of those carried out by truck-driving extremists in London, Nice and other cities, saying “there is no discernable connection to national security.”

But authorities said the incident during the busy lunch hour Monday was undoubtedly deliberate.

Lead investigator DetectiveSergeant Graham Gibson said Minassian had posted a “cryptic message on Facebook minutes before he began driving the rented van” along a long stretch of Yonge Street, eventually jumping the curb onto the sidewalk.

In the post, Minassian praised mass killer Elliot Rodger -- a 22-yearold American who murdered six people and then killed himself in California in 2014, and who had professed frustration over his virginity and women rejecting him.

The suspect’s post also referred to the “Incel Rebellion” -- “incel” is short for “involuntarily celibate” and is often used in connection with online groups of sexually frustrated men who are known to rant against women.

“We will overthrow all the Chads and Stacys!” the post read, monikers used in the community to describe people who have no

trouble finding sexual partners.

Gibson said the victims of the Toronto attack were “predominantly women” and ranged in age from the mid-20s to 80s.

Minassian also referred to himself on social media as a private in the army. Canadian military spokeswoman Jessica Lamirande confirmed that he enlisted last August but asked to be discharged after only 16 days of basic training.

A shaven-headed Minassian appeared in court early Tuesday to hear the charges against him -- 10 counts of premeditated murder and 13 of attempted murder. A 14th count of attempted murder was pending after the toll of injured was revised down.

Minassian stood impassively with his hands behind his back, wearing a white police jumpsuit.

He was calm as he was led away.

The suspect is scheduled to return to court on May 10 for a bail hearing.

- Victim was ‘shining light’ -

Several of the victims were named in court documents, but others were still being identified by the coroner, who brought in extra help overnight.

The first of the dead to be publicly identified was Anne Marie D’Amico, who worked at an investment management company near the scene.

Her family called her a “shining light,” saying in a statement: “We hope that in this time, people fight with the same altruism (she had) rather than anger and hatred.”

Two South Koreans were among the dead, a foreign ministry official in Seoul told AFP, adding that another of the country’s citizens was seriously injured.

Indonesia’s former speaker gets 15 years in jail for corruption Indonesia’s former parliament speaker was given a 15-year prison term on Tuesday in one of the country’s toughest sentences for graft, marking a victory in a continuing clampdown on widespread corruption. Setya Novanto, once among the country’s most influential politicians, had been accused of taking millions of dollars in kickbacks and bribes linked to the national roll-out of government ID cards.

“We have found defendant Setya Novanto, beyond reasonable doubt, guilty of violating anti-corruption law,” presiding Judge Yanto told the packed Jakarta courtroom. Novanto -- once praised by Donald Trump as one Indonesia’s most powerful figures -- said he would need time to consider an appeal.

His months-long trial came after a string of manoeuvres -- including allegedly faking an injury in a car crash -- which critics say the 62-year-old used to dodge serious charges. Prosecutors had demanded a 16-year sentence.

Judge Yanto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, also fined Novanto 500 million rupiah ($36,000), far less than the $7.4 million prosecutors had wanted him to pay as restitution to the state.

Novanto, who had managed to sidestep corruption allegations in the past, was accused of playing a key role in embezzlement from the $440 million ID card project, with some $170 million disappearing from state coffers.

Several other politicians, government officials and businessmen have been charged in the scandal. The scale of the graft shocked many Indonesians even in one of the world’s most corrupt countries. Payoffs and bribes are rife at all levels of society and endemic in many state agencies, including the police force.

A top investigator for Indonesia’s powerful Corruption Eradication Commission was partially blinded in a 2017 acid attack as he was heading the probe into the case involving Novanto and others. No one has yet been arrested. The verdict comes several years after the former chief justice of Indonesia’s constitutional court, Akil Mochtar, was jailed for life for accepting bribes to issue favourable decisions in local election disputes.

It was the country’s heaviest-ever sentence for corruption. Novanto, who dodged questioning by the anticorruption agency for months, was arrested in hospital in November after he claimed to have been injured in a car crash. The reported accident came shortly after a failed raid on his palatial estate.

Indonesia’s graft buster subsequently charged Novanto’s then-lawyer and doctor with obstructing justice over allegations they booked a hospital room for the supposedly injured politician before his purported car accident happened.

Novanto had been forced to quit as speaker in 2015 after he was caught on tape trying to extort a stake in the Indonesian unit of US mining giant FreeportMc-

MoRan in exchange for extending the company’s right to operate in the archipelago. He was later cleared and reappointed as speaker in 2016. He quit again last year after the most recent charges were laid. (afp)

Indonesia ranked 96th out of 180 countries on Transparency International’s corruption index last year, while it scored a lowly 37 on a scale of perceived public corruption with 100 seen as “very clean” and zero “highly corrupt”. The war on graft has come with a high price for some.

The reigning NBA champions, jolted by the Spurs in game four on Sunday, booked their place in the next round with a nervy 99-91 win in front of the home fans at the Oracle Arena.

The Warriors will now face the New Orleans Pelicans for a place in the conference finals.

However Golden State were given a scare after a late fourth quarter rally from San Antonio that threatened to take the best-of-seven series to a game six.

The Spurs chipped away at a double-digit Golden State lead to close to 93-91 with 57 seconds left on the clock.

But Durant delivered when it mattered with a superb fadeaway jump shot and two free throws to take Golden State clear again as the clock ticked down.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr said the Spurs’ battling performance bore the hallmark of counterpart Gregg Popovich, who again was missing from the San Antonio bench following the death of his wife from a long illness last week.

“That was a big-time fight.

We’re lucky to get out of here,” Kerr said.

“They’re a championship organisation and they’ve been doing this for a long time. They’re a reflection of their coach.”

Golden State had edged into a 22-20 first quarter lead before stretching away in the second quarter to go into the halftime break 49-38 ahead.

A late flurry in the third quarter, including a Durant three-pointer and a pullup jump shot from Shaun Livingston gave the Warriors a 79-65 lead heading into the final quarter.

With the Warriors still without the injured Stephen Curry, it was left to Klay Thompson and Durant to carry the offense.

Durant finished with six rebounds and five assists while Thompson had 24 points. Draymond Green also contributed 17 points and 19 rebounds.

STUTTGART - Maria Sharapova crashed out in the opening round of the Stuttgart Grand Prix on Tuesday as French sixth seed Caroline Garcia staged a fightback to win 3-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-4.

“This was not the result that I wanted, but I can take a lot out of this match,” Sharapova said. “I’ve not competed for a few weeks, but I played pretty solid and did all of the right things.

“I served well in the first set but had a few doubles at the wrong time. Physically, I felt quite strong.”

The five-time Grand Slam champion, who turned 31 last week, looked to be in control as she made just two unforced errors in winning the opening set.

But Garcia, who had never beaten the Russian in four previous meetings -- they last played in Madrid three years ago -rallied in the second set as she came from 4-2 down and and levelled the contest in a tie-break.

The 41st-ranked Sharapova returned to tennis in Stuttgart exactly a year ago after finishing a 15-month doping ban for meldonium and reached the semi-finals.

She claimed an early break in the third set, but lost it in the third game as Garcia tightened the screw on the crowd favourite.

Sharapova was broken to trail 4-5 and

put her opponent under momentary pressure at 0-30 as Garcia tried to serve out the win.

But the world number seven succeeded on her second match point as Sharapova struck a return wide to exit after two and three-quarter hours of battle on the indoor clay court.

Sharapova said her game might have been compromised by weeks of forearm injury recovery after last playing in Indian Wells six weeks ago.

“Overall I didn’t react as well as I could against a server like her, she got lot of free points,” Sharapova said.

“I didn’t get enough balls back. We were both playing fast, and aggressive.

“I need to be smarter in the winning position.”

Garcia will next take on Ukrainian qualifier Marta Kostyuk who scored a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Antonia Lottner.

The youngster, who doesn’t turn 16 until just before the start of Wimbledon, was joined in round two by Czech fifth seed Karolina Pliskova, who beat Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens 6-2, 6-2.

Kostyuk made a breakthrough with a surprise third-round showing at the Australian Open as a qualifier, finally losing to compatriot Elina Svitolina.

World number 158 Kostyuk has since

claimed a second-tier title in Burnie, Australia and reached a final in Zhuhai, China in March.

Salah superb but five-star Liverpool give Roma lifeline Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp labelled talisman Mohamed Salah a “genius” as the Egyptian came back to haunt former club Roma in spectacular style with two goals and two assists in a 5-2 semi-final, first-leg demolition of the Italians at Anfield. However, Liverpool’s night was soured by the concession of two late away goals and a serious injury to midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain that looks set to end his season and World Cup chances with England.

Roberto Firmino also scored twice and Sadio Mane netted Liverpool’s other goal to make up for missing a series of giltedged chances as the scoreline did anything but flatter the hosts.

“He’s outstanding, pretty much you can’t defend (against him),” said Klopp of Salah. “The first goal is a genius strike. He scored already a few like this and that makes it even more special because it makes it no coincidence.” Roma produced one of the finest comebacks in Champions League history by overturning a 4-1 first-leg deficit against Barcelona in the quarter-finals.

They will need to do the same in the return leg on May 2, but the visitors were at least given a lifeline when Edin Dzeko and Diego Perotti grabbed two vital away goals in the final 10 minutes.

“This reaction is welcome because we give meaning to the return match,” said Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco.

“This was the first semi-final for Roma after three decades, we are not used to playing this level of opposition but this tie is not over. We have done it before. Whoever doesn’t believe in this comeback can stay home.” Liverpool will rue their missed chances and poor late defending, but remain well on course for a first final in 11 years.

“Since I arrived Liverpool always had to take a slightly more difficult way, but, in the end, mostly still a successful way and that’s what we will try in Roma,” said Klopp. “It is still a very positive result tonight.” The hosts’ early rhythm was disrupted

Europa League offers last chance for Wenger to sign off a winner

Arsenal have little time to digest Arsene Wenger’s long-awaited decision to end his 22-year reign as a Europa League semi-final with Atletico Madrid offers the outgoing manager a chance to salvage some

of his lost credit with the club’s fans.

Wenger admitted he stepped aside to unite a fanbase fed up with years of mediocre results having been spoiled by success and silky football in the first decade of the Frenchman’s reign.

Fourteen years on from Arsenal’s last Premier League title, for so long Wenger could defend his record by consistent qualification for the Champions League. However, a 19-year run in Europe’s premier club competition came to an end this season and Arsenal’s only chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League is by winning the Europa League.

To do so, though, Wenger will need to achieve something that he couldn’t even manage in his peak years in charge -- win a European trophy. His two final losses in the 2000 UEFA Cup to Galatasaray and against Barcelona in the 2006 Champions League, allied to a Cup Winners’ Cup final defeat

by Werder Bremen when manager of Monaco in 1992, handed him the ignominy of being the only manager ever to reach the finals of all three European club competitions and lose every one.

Winning three FA Cups in the last four years did little to appease Arsenal fans’ demand for change.

However, Wenger’s legacy will be

looked on far more kindly if be could bow out in his homeland next month in Lyon by guaranteeing Champions League football for his successor.

“I’m happy now we can all talk about his legacy and let’s not forget that we still have to win the Europa League,” said Arsenal’s all-time top goalscorer Thierry Henry on the day Wenger announced his departure.

“Let’s not get lost in celebrating the end of his era. The team has to win the Europa League. It would be an amazing achievement and Arsene never won in Europe before so it would be a great way to give him a good exit.”

Hopes that Wenger’s announcement would galvanise the support for the final few weeks of his reign were confounded by a subdued atmosphere for Sunday’s 4-1 win over West Ham at the Emirates. But Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis insisted there will be “an electric atmosphere” on Thursday night with far more at stake for the club.

The hosts are likely to need to feed off some positive energy from

the stands to build a lead to take to Madrid in a week’s time against European specialists Atletico. Since Diego Simeone took charge seven years ago, Atletico have reached five European semi-finals, and have only been eliminated by bitter rivals Real Madrid for the past four seasons in the Champions League.

With Atletico sitting comfortably in second in La Liga and already assured of Champions League football next season, Simeone was able to ease the physical toil on a small squad by resting a number of key players for Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Real Betis.

That was Atletico’s 11th straight clean sheet at the Wanda Metropolitano to emphasise Arsenal’s need to take a first-leg lead to Spain. However, the Gunners’ chances were not aided by the inclusion of an old foe in Diego Costa in the Atletico squad as he looks set to shrug off a hamstring injury.

Marseille host Salzburg eyeing return to European glory days

Quarter of a century on from giving French football its crowning moment in Europe, Marseille are dreaming of continental glory once again. But the club that won the inaugural Champions League in 1993 -- still the only time the European Cup has been won by a French side -- must first come through a semi-final against Austria’s Red Bull Salzburg, with the first leg at the Velodrome on Thursday.

If Marseille can win before a sellout crowd of more than 60,000 on Thursday night (kick-off 1905 GMT), it will set them up to finish the job in next week’s return and keep them on course to make a final that will be played in France, at the home of their bitter rivals Lyon. Given that Atletico Madrid and Arsenal meet in the other semi-final, Marseille cannot be seen as favourites to lift the trophy.

Nevertheless, the rousing 5-2 win over RB Leipzig in the second leg of the quarter-final at the Velodrome confirmed that they are a club on the up again under Rudi Garcia. The former Lille and Roma coach has spearheaded Marseille’s revival on the field since American tycoon Frank McCourt’s takeover of the club in late

2016. McCourt immediately launched his ‘Champions Project’, aimed at getting the club back into Europe’s top club competition again as soon as possible.

They are currently locked in a fierce battle with Lyon and Monaco for two Champions League qualifying berths in Ligue 1 behind champions Paris Saint-Germain. But with Florian Thauvin in the form of his life, Dimitri Payet at his best again and Brazil midfielder Luiz Gustavo proving an inspired signing, they could yet win the Europa League and, in the process, qualify for the Champions League anyway.

“We are on a winning run, which is important, and now we are going to study Salzburg closely,” said Garcia after a 5-1 weekend win over Lille.

“We want to play with the same degree of enthusiasm, talent and team spirit.

“We are never more clinical than when everyone is playing for each other.

With this spirit, this team is capable of being stronger than everything.”

- ‘Take the next step’ -

Given PSG’s well documented difficulties in the Champions League,

Marseille’s run has given French football a boost, a year after Lyon lost in the last four of the same competition.

Police have arrested a man following a “serious assault” ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Roma at Anfield on Tuesday. A Liverpool supporter was attacked by Roma hooligans before the match, which ended in a 5-2 win for the Premier League club. Merseyside Police said in a statement: “We can confirm a man has been arrested following an assault near to the Albert public house earlier this evening.

“He has been taken to a police station where he will be interviewed by detectives. “The 53-year-old victim is currently being treated for his injuries.”

There were clashes between Liverpool and Roma supporters shortly before kick-off. Around 80 Roma fans are thought to have used a side road to reach an area populated by Liverpool supporters just outside their Anfield stadium.

One man was seen motionless on the road and BBC Sport footage showed another fan carrying a hammer amid reports Roma supporters used belts as weapons. Sunday Times Football correspondent Jonathan Northcroft tweeted: “Roma fans have just attacked Liverpool supporters with belts, outside the

“The Roma group came out of Venmore Street, and attack was sudden.” Video footage later emerged on social media showing Roma thugs, dressed in black and with hoods and masks over their faces, carrying out their attack on the Liverpool supporters.

There were also clashes between fans in Liverpool city centre before the match, with the Italians again seen to provoke the incident. Roma fans also have a history of targeting English supporters in the Italian capital, with Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United fans both complaining of assaults during their visits in recent years.

The trouble at Anfield followed disturbing scenes during Liverpool’s quarter-final win over Manchester City when fans threw missiles at the visitors’ team bus. To avoid a repeat of those scenes, extra police were drafted in for the Roma match, while tactical road closures kept fans away from the visitors’ team bus. Arsenal have little time to digest Arsene Wenger’s long-awaited decision to end his 22-year reign as a Europa League semi-final with Atletico Madrid offers the outgoing manager a chance to salvage some

of his lost credit with the club’s fans.

Wenger admitted he stepped aside to unite a fanbase fed up with years of mediocre results having been spoiled by success and silky football in the first decade of the Frenchman’s reign.

Fourteen years on from Arsenal’s last Premier League title, for so long Wenger could defend his record by consistent qualification for the Champions League. However, a 19-year run in Europe’s premier club competition came to an end this season and Arsenal’s only chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League is by winning the Europa League.

To do so, though, Wenger will need to achieve something that he couldn’t even manage in his peak years in charge -- win a European trophy. His two final losses in the 2000 UEFA Cup to Galatasaray and against Barcelona in the 2006 Champions League, allied to a Cup Winners’ Cup final defeat

by Werder Bremen when manager of Monaco in 1992, handed him the ignominy of being the only manager ever to reach the finals of all three European club competitions and lose every one.

Winning three FA Cups in the last four years did little to appease Arsenal fans’ demand for change.

However, Wenger’s legacy will be

looked on far more kindly if be could bow out in his homeland next month in Lyon by guaranteeing Champions League football for his successor.

“I’m happy now we can all talk about his legacy and let’s not forget that we still have to win the Europa League,” said Arsenal’s all-time top goalscorer Thierry Henry on the day Wenger announced his departure.

“Let’s not get lost in celebrating the end of his era. The team has to win the Europa League. It would be an amazing achievement and Arsene never won in Europe before so it would be a great way to give him a good exit.”

Hopes that Wenger’s announcement would galvanise the support for the final few weeks of his reign were confounded by a subdued atmosphere for Sunday’s 4-1 win over West Ham at the Emirates. But Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis insisted there will be “an electric atmosphere” on Thursday night with far more at stake for the club.

The hosts are likely to need to feed off some positive energy from

the stands to build a lead to take to Madrid in a week’s time against European specialists Atletico. Since Diego Simeone took charge seven years ago, Atletico have reached five European semi-finals, and have only been eliminated by bitter rivals Real Madrid for the past four seasons in the Champions League.

With Atletico sitting comfortably in second in La Liga and already assured of Champions League football next season, Simeone was able to ease the physical toil on a small squad by resting a number of key players for Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Real Betis.

That was Atletico’s 11th straight clean sheet at the Wanda Metropolitano to emphasise Arsenal’s need to take a first-leg lead to Spain. However, the Gunners’ chances were not aided by the inclusion of an old foe in Diego Costa in the Atletico squad as he looks set to shrug off a hamstring injury.

Marseille host Salzburg eyeing return to European glory days

Quarter of a century on from giving French football its crowning moment in Europe, Marseille are dreaming of continental glory once again. But the club that won the inaugural Champions League in 1993 -- still the only time the European Cup has been won by a French side -- must first come through a semi-final against Austria’s Red Bull Salzburg, with the first leg at the Velodrome on Thursday.

If Marseille can win before a sellout crowd of more than 60,000 on Thursday night (kick-off 1905 GMT), it will set them up to finish the job in next week’s return and keep them on course to make a final that will be played in France, at the home of their bitter rivals Lyon. Given that Atletico Madrid and Arsenal meet in the other semi-final, Marseille cannot be seen as favourites to lift the trophy.

Nevertheless, the rousing 5-2 win over RB Leipzig in the second leg of the quarter-final at the Velodrome confirmed that they are a club on the up again under Rudi Garcia. The former Lille and Roma coach has spearheaded Marseille’s revival on the field since American tycoon Frank McCourt’s takeover of the club in late

2016. McCourt immediately launched his ‘Champions Project’, aimed at getting the club back into Europe’s top club competition again as soon as possible.

They are currently locked in a fierce battle with Lyon and Monaco for two Champions League qualifying berths in Ligue 1 behind champions Paris Saint-Germain. But with Florian Thauvin in the form of his life, Dimitri Payet at his best again and Brazil midfielder Luiz Gustavo proving an inspired signing, they could yet win the Europa League and, in the process, qualify for the Champions League anyway.

“We are on a winning run, which is important, and now we are going to study Salzburg closely,” said Garcia after a 5-1 weekend win over Lille.

“We want to play with the same degree of enthusiasm, talent and team spirit.

“We are never more clinical than when everyone is playing for each other.

With this spirit, this team is capable of being stronger than everything.”

Given PSG’s well documented difficulties in the Champions League,

Marseille’s run has given French football a boost, a year after Lyon lost in the last four of the same competition.

Police have arrested a man following a “serious assault” ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Roma at Anfield on Tuesday. A Liverpool supporter was attacked by Roma hooligans before the match, which ended in a 5-2 win for the Premier League club. Merseyside Police said in a statement: “We can confirm a man has been arrested following an assault near to the Albert public house earlier this evening.

The reigning NBA champions, jolted by the Spurs in game four on Sunday, booked their place in the next round with a nervy 99-91 win in front of the home fans at the Oracle Arena.

The Warriors will now face the New Orleans Pelicans for a place in the conference finals.

However Golden State were given a scare after a late fourth quarter rally from San Antonio that threatened to take the best-of-seven series to a game six.

The Spurs chipped away at a double-digit Golden State lead to close to 93-91 with 57 seconds left on the clock.

But Durant delivered when it mattered with a superb fadeaway jump shot and two free throws to take Golden State clear again as the clock ticked down.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr said the Spurs’ battling performance bore the hallmark of counterpart Gregg Popovich, who again was missing from the San Antonio bench following the death of his wife from a long illness last week.

“That was a big-time fight.

We’re lucky to get out of here,” Kerr said.

“They’re a championship organisation and they’ve been doing this for a long time. They’re a reflection of their coach.”

Golden State had edged into a 22-20 first quarter lead before stretching away in the second quarter to go into the halftime break 49-38 ahead.

A late flurry in the third quarter, including a Durant three-pointer and a pullup jump shot from Shaun Livingston gave the Warriors a 79-65 lead heading into the final quarter.

With the Warriors still without the injured Stephen Curry, it was left to Klay Thompson and Durant to carry the offense.

Durant finished with six rebounds and five assists while Thompson had 24 points. Draymond Green also contributed 17 points and 19 rebounds.

STUTTGART - Maria Sharapova crashed out in the opening round of the Stuttgart Grand Prix on Tuesday as French sixth seed Caroline Garcia staged a fightback to win 3-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-4.

“This was not the result that I wanted, but I can take a lot out of this match,” Sharapova said. “I’ve not competed for a few weeks, but I played pretty solid and did all of the right things.

“I served well in the first set but had a few doubles at the wrong time. Physically, I felt quite strong.”

The five-time Grand Slam champion, who turned 31 last week, looked to be in control as she made just two unforced errors in winning the opening set.

But Garcia, who had never beaten the Russian in four previous meetings -- they last played in Madrid three years ago -rallied in the second set as she came from 4-2 down and and levelled the contest in a tie-break.

The 41st-ranked Sharapova returned to tennis in Stuttgart exactly a year ago after finishing a 15-month doping ban for meldonium and reached the semi-finals.

She claimed an early break in the third set, but lost it in the third game as Garcia tightened the screw on the crowd favourite.

Sharapova was broken to trail 4-5 and

put her opponent under momentary pressure at 0-30 as Garcia tried to serve out the win.

Armenian opposition leader says ‘ready to lead’ country

YEREVAN - Armenian opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan on Tuesday said he was ready to lead the country after the shock resignation of Prime Minister Serzh Sarkisian following eleven days of protests against his rule.

“Yes of course we are ready to lead our country,” Pashinyan said at a news conference in Yerevan, after being asked whether he was willing to steer the government of the ex-Soviet South Caucasus country.

“If people will bestow on me this responsibility, I’ll assume the responsibility,” Pashinyan said.

Sarkisian stunned the country on Monday by standing down from his new post as prime minister.

He had previously spent a decade in power as president and was accused of a blatant power grab by the opposition, who staged days of rallies in protest.

According to Armenian law, lawmakers in the parliament, where Sarkisian’s Republican Party have a majority, have a week to propose new candidates for PM and could hold a vote on May 2.

The jump in the death toll was from the subsequent deaths of five victims who had been rushed to hospital, authorities said. “There was a group of people digging in the old well but suddenly a huge fire was sparked and it exploded,” said national police spokesman Setyo Wasisto.

The victims were collecting oil from around the entrance of a wellbore when the blaze erupted, police said.

It was not known how much oil was spilled or what ignited the fire, but authorities suggested

Canada van massacre driver charged with murder, most victims women

TORONTO - A Canadian man who apparently had a grudge against women was charged with murder Tuesday after allegedly plowing a rented van onto a crowded Toronto sidewalk, killing 10 people -- an incident that shocked the nation.

Police said the suspect, 25-yearold Alek Minassian, was not known to them before Monday’s carnage in Canada’s most populous city, which also left 14 people injured. Most of the victims were women.

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale played down any suggestion that the attack bore the hallmarks of those carried out by truck-driving extremists in London, Nice and other cities, saying “there is no discernable connection to national security.”

But authorities said the incident during the busy lunch hour Monday was undoubtedly deliberate.

Lead investigator DetectiveSergeant Graham Gibson said Minassian had posted a “cryptic message on Facebook minutes before he began driving the rented van” along a long stretch of Yonge Street, eventually jumping the curb onto the sidewalk.

In the post, Minassian praised mass killer Elliot Rodger -- a 22-yearold American who murdered six people and then killed himself in California in 2014, and who had professed frustration over his virginity and women rejecting him.

The suspect’s post also referred to the “Incel Rebellion” -- “incel” is short for “involuntarily celibate” and is often used in connection with online groups of sexually frustrated men who are known to rant against women.

“We will overthrow all the Chads and Stacys!” the post read, monikers used in the community to describe people who have no

trouble finding sexual partners.

Gibson said the victims of the Toronto attack were “predominantly women” and ranged in age from the mid-20s to 80s.

Minassian also referred to himself on social media as a private in the army. Canadian military spokeswoman Jessica Lamirande confirmed that he enlisted last August but asked to be discharged after only 16 days of basic training.

A shaven-headed Minassian appeared in court early Tuesday to hear the charges against him -- 10 counts of premeditated murder and 13 of attempted murder. A 14th count of attempted murder was pending after the toll of injured was revised down.

Minassian stood impassively with his hands behind his back, wearing a white police jumpsuit.

He was calm as he was led away.

The suspect is scheduled to return to court on May 10 for a bail hearing.

Several of the victims were named in court documents, but others were still being identified by the coroner, who brought in extra help overnight.

The first of the dead to be publicly identified was Anne Marie D’Amico, who worked at an investment management company near the scene.

Her family called her a “shining light,” saying in a statement: “We hope that in this time, people fight with the same altruism (she had) rather than anger and hatred.”

Two South Koreans were among the dead, a foreign ministry official in Seoul told AFP, adding that another of the country’s citizens was seriously injured.

Indonesia’s former speaker gets 15 years in jail for corruption Indonesia’s former parliament speaker was given a 15-year prison term on Tuesday in one of the country’s toughest sentences for graft, marking a victory in a continuing clampdown on widespread corruption. Setya Novanto, once among the country’s most influential politicians, had been accused of taking millions of dollars in kickbacks and bribes linked to the national roll-out of government ID cards.

“We have found defendant Setya Novanto, beyond reasonable doubt, guilty of violating anti-corruption law,” presiding Judge Yanto told the packed Jakarta courtroom. Novanto -- once praised by Donald Trump as one Indonesia’s most powerful figures -- said he would need time to consider an appeal.

His months-long trial came after a string of manoeuvres -- including allegedly faking an injury in a car crash -- which critics say the 62-year-old used to dodge serious charges. Prosecutors had demanded a 16-year sentence.

Judge Yanto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, also fined Novanto 500 million rupiah ($36,000), far less than the $7.4 million prosecutors had wanted him to pay as restitution to the state.

Novanto, who had managed to sidestep corruption allegations in the past, was accused of playing a key role in embezzlement from the $440 million ID card project, with some $170 million disappearing from state coffers.

Several other politicians, government officials and businessmen have been charged in the scandal. The scale of the graft shocked many Indonesians even in one of the world’s most corrupt countries. Payoffs and bribes are rife at all levels of society and endemic in many state agencies, including the police force.

A top investigator for Indonesia’s powerful Corruption Eradication Commission was partially blinded in a 2017 acid attack as he was heading the probe into the case involving Novanto and others. No one has yet been arrested. The verdict comes several years after the former chief justice of Indonesia’s constitutional court, Akil Mochtar, was jailed for life for accepting bribes to issue favourable decisions in local election disputes.

It was the country’s heaviest-ever sentence for corruption. Novanto, who dodged questioning by the anticorruption agency for months, was arrested in hospital in November after he claimed to have been injured in a car crash. The reported accident came shortly after a failed raid on his palatial estate.

Indonesia’s graft buster subsequently charged Novanto’s then-lawyer and doctor with obstructing justice over allegations they booked a hospital room for the supposedly injured politician before his purported car accident happened.

Novanto had been forced to quit as speaker in 2015 after he was caught on tape trying to extort a stake in the Indonesian unit of US mining giant FreeportMc-

MoRan in exchange for extending the company’s right to operate in the archipelago. He was later cleared and reappointed as speaker in 2016. He quit again last year after the most recent charges were laid. (afp)

Executives at Toyota -- which announced that it will introduce 10 new electrified vehicles by 2020, including two plug-in hybrids presented at the show -- said they too were moving cautiously on the reforms. While Toyota has two JV partners in China, its luxury Lexus brand is imported.

“Whether we will go ahead on our own requires in-depth study,” said Toyota China CEO Kazuhiro Kobayashi, citing local government regulations, procurement of parts and other issues.

Britain’s Lloyds Banking Group, bailed out by the government during the global financial crisis, on Wednesday logged strong first-quarter profits on the back of the “resilient” UK economy. Earnings after taxation, or net profits, jumped 29 percent to £1.15 billion ($1.61 billion, 1.31 billion euros) in the three months to the end of March from a year earlier, the lender said in a results statement.

LBG, which returned to full private ownership last year following

its financial rescue by the UK government a decade ago, added that pre-tax profits swelled 23 percent to £1.6 billion.

But last week Beijing announced it would liberalise foreign ownership limits in the sector, a move seen as a possible olive branch to President Donald Trump. China currently restricts foreign auto firms to a maximum 50 percent ownership of joint ventures with local companies. Nampin or chewing betel leaves is one of the traditions that remains strong amongst Balinese elders. According to one respected elder named Ni Ketut Darma, who still chews betel leaves everyday, tradtionally the ingredients for betwel chewing are kept in a special betel nut box called pabuan or pecanangan. “When we use this box at home we call it pabuan, but when we serve guests we call this penginangan, using more refined language” she explained.

According to Grandma Darma, the betel nut box is made of wood in the long side shape where it generally consists of some compartments containing lime, betel leaves, gambier, betel nut, betel nut mortar and pestle or panyawisan, small knife, and caket (used to halve areca nut). She said that in the past the betel nut box was the first thing to be served to guests who came or when visiting other people’s homes.

“Presenting betel nut box and nampin has become a tradition in the life of Balinese people, until now this tradition remains to be implemented especially by parents like me,” she said.

She added the betel nut box is not only served at home, but also at temple with a different designation. At temple, it is called pacanangan, functioned as the offerings presented to deities. Pabuan and pacanangan is basically not the same. Pabuan served at home usually contains lime, gambier, betel leaf, betel nut, betel nut mortar and pestle, small

knife, and caket, while the pecanangan at temple has the same contents with additional ingredients like thread, money and fruits.

When asked about how she feels when doing nampin, she just claimed to be accustomed to

doing it. Men and women of her age usually do it. It is tasteless but the lips feel abrasive. It feels nothing due to the mixture with lime. “Our lips are abrasive, but I have been accustomed to the taste,” she said. (kmb)

He said this use does not have negative impact on humans provided that 14 days before slaughtering the AGP administration is stopped, so there is no residue in the animal. “However, what happens in the field is that breeders are frequently not disciplined where they continuously give this antibiotic before slaughtering. Definitely, the residue on meat will be risky if consumed by humans. Therefore, the use of antibiotics is prohibited,” he explained.

A lecturer of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University, Ketut Anom Dada, previously said that many fodders are indicated to contain harmful ingredients such as antibiotics and growth hormones. Both ingredients are equally hazardous if the animals are later consumed by humans.

Police in the southern city of Shenzhen have detained 10 suspects, mostly from Hong Kong, following an investigation that began in July 2017, the Guangdong province public security department said.

The statement, released Tuesday, called it the “biggest amount of cocaine seized in the country”.

The official Xinhua news agency said the massive haul had a street value of one billion yuan ($160 million).

The drug came from an unidentified South American country and was shipped to the Guangdong port of Shanwei.

The police statement, released Tuesday, did not say whether the drug was destined for the Chinese market or another country, but cocaine use is low in China compared to other drugs.

A 2017 government report found that China had 2.5 million drug users, with 60 percent consuming synthetic drugs, 38 percent using opiates and 1.4 percent using co-

caine and marijuana.

Cocaine originates in the Andes but China is believed to be one of the main manufacturers of synthetic drugs -- including opioids such as fentanyl -- which have been blamed for public health crises in the US, Canada and Australia among other countries.

The Shenzhen investigation began in July 2017 after police received a tip related to drug trafficking, the Guangdong public security statement said.

A month later, a task force learned that gangs were about to conduct a “large scale” drug delivery. Five suspects, including three from Hong Kong, were detained and 40 kilogrammes of cocaine were seized.

In February, the investigation led to the arrest of three more suspects and the seizure of another 1,291 kilogrammes of cocaine.

Inuka, first polar bear born in the tropics, is put down SINGAPORE - Inuka, the first polar bear born in the tropics, was put down Wednesday after a rapid decline in health, with Singapore Zoo mourning the loss of one of its best-loved animals.

The bear, whose name means “Silent Stalker” in Inuit, had reached the grand old age of 27 -- into his 70s in human years and two years older than the average lifespan of the creatures in captivity.

Born at the zoo, Inuka was particularly popular with visitors due to his playful antics in his enclosure.

But in recent years the animal had suffered age-related ailments, including arthritis, and an examination at the start of this month revealed his health was failing markedly.

His weakened limbs had trouble supporting his body and he developed cuts on his paws and a wound on his abdomen.

After a final check-up, vets found that Inuka’s health had not improved despite intensive treatment and decided not to revive him from anaesthesia.

“Singaporeans have known Inuka from the time he was a cub, and have seen him growing up and ageing,” said Mohan Ponichamy, one of his keepers.

“It has been a privilege and honour being his care giver, but difficult as it may be, it would not have been fair to prolong his suffering.”

The bear had been put on a “seniors programme” at the zoo for the past five years, to help elderly animals deal with the effects of ageing.

He had slowed down in recent months, and became less interested in his daily playing sessions.

Inuka was born on December 26, 1990. His father Nanook was caught in the wild and came from Canada and his mother, Sheeba, came from a German zoo.

His death marks the end of an era for the zoo, which has said it will not keep any more polar bears in its collection.

As few as 22,000 polar bears are thought to remain in the wild, according to environmental group WWF. Protection group the International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies them as a vulnerable species.

They are typically found in places with cold climates such as Greenland, and parts of Canada and Russia -- making Singapore, where daytime temperatures rarely dip below 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit), an unusual location for the creatures to live. (afp)

Beer breath: Drinking alcohol may give you more than bad breath DRINKING alcohol can give you more than strong breath — it may mess up the balance of good versus bad bacteria in your mouth, researchers reported Monday.

That, in turn, can raise the risk not only of gum disease and cavities, but also of cancer and heart disease, they said.

Their findings, published in the journal Microbiome, could help explain why people who drink more may die younger than people who drink less, and why drinking can cause cancer.

“Our study offers clear evidence that drinking is bad for maintaining a healthy balance of microbes in the mouth and could help explain why drinking, like smoking, leads to bacterial changes already tied to cancer and chronic disease,” Jiyoung Ahn, an epidemiologist at NYU Langone Health’s Perlmutter Cancer Center, said in a statement.

“My report provides another scientific rationale for avoiding excessive alcohol drinking,” she added in a telephone interview.

Drinking alcohol kills off many “good” bacteria, and allows some potentially harmful bacteria to flourish in the mouth, they found.

“Such changes potentially contribute to alcoholrelated diseases, including periodontal disease, head and neck cancer, and digestive tract cancers,” the team wrote.

Although people who drink lightly to moderately appear healthier than people who don’t drink at all, more and more studies are starting to show that even moderate drinking can damage health.

Drinkers are more likely to develop a range of cancers, as well as heart disease, and alcohol’s stress on the liver is well known.

Heavy drinkers also notoriously can lose teeth and develop gum disease. Ahn’s team set out to determine whether some or all of these various types of damage are due to alcohol’s effect on the microbiome in the mouth.

Microbiomes are the collection of microorganisms, including bacteria, yeast and viruses, that live in and on our bodies. They help digest food, can protect from disease and might cause disease, as well. (net)

Garbage piles up along road to Trunyan

Sedana Arta asks people to keep environmental clean

BANGLI - Large number of garbage accumulating along the road in Abang Batudinding to Terunyan village, Kintamani, is very much deplored by Deputy Regent of Bangli, Sang Nyoman Sedana Arta. Seeing that condition, he asked all the local people to be more aware so as not to litter, but take care to keep the environment clean and sustainable.

Sedana Arta revealed he knows there is a lot of garbage scattered on the roadside after crossing the path a few days ago. He saw a lot of garbage accumulating at some points along the road. Such condition is also considered to make the area look shabby. “There is a lot of garbage scattered there, not only plastic waste, but also organic waste scattered so that it makes the location look very dirty due to the piles of garbage,” he said recently.

This official from Sulahan Susut hoped people not to throw garbage carelessly again and follow to keep the environment clean. So, along the path can be clean and free from

garbage. Moreover, the road access is often passed through by tourists wishing to visit Terunyan. “We hope people are more aware that they may not dispose of garbage by the roadside as can disturb the scenery and comfort of passersby.

Besides, the garbage can contaminate the surrounding environment,” explained Sedana Arta.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Bangli Environment Agency, Ida Ayu Gde Yuhi Sutha, explained there is a village fund allocation (ADD) that can be taken advantage to overcome the environmental problems. On that account, she hoped that all the communities to participate in maintaining the sanitation of the surrounding environment. “Let us jointly maintain the environmental sanitation in order to stay clean because without the awareness of the community itself it will be difficult to create a beautiful environment. A large study founds that measuring blood pressure at home is a much stronger predictor of death than the blood pressure reading taken at the doctor’s office.

FOR people whose blood pressure rises when measured at the doctor’s office — a condition known as “white coat hypertension” — there may be a real reason to worry, new research shows.

White coat hypertension, which may affect up to 30 percent of Americans, occurs when the blood pressure reading at the doctor’s office is higher than it is when checked at home or other settings. It was once thought that it was just the temporary stress of being at the doctor that caused a spike and that it didn’t indicate a bigger problem.

But the risk of death was nearly twice as high for patients with

white coat hypertension, compared to patients whose blood pressure is normal when taken at the doctor’s office and at home, the report published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Wednesday shows.

“White-coat hypertension is not benign,” said Dr. Haitham Ahmed, medical director of cardiac rehabilitation at Cleveland Clinic, who was not a part of the study. “If seeing a white coat increases your blood pressure, a lot of other stressors in life are expected to as well.”

Researchers from the Autonomous University of Madrid, who followed 64,000 people over five years, concluded that blood pressure measurements taken at home

regularly were a stronger predictor of cardiovascular deaths than doctor’s office readings.

“We don’t want to dismiss white coat hypertension,” said Dr. Raymond Townsend, director of the hypertension program at Penn Medicine and author of the study’s editorial via email. “We encourage our patients to do blood pressure readings at home. That is a good way to not only monitor blood pressure where you actually “live”, but it also provides a lot of insight for patients to understand how life’s little indiscretions, like take-out Chinese with extra soy sauce, can truly affect your blood pressure the next day.” (net)

Head of the Tabanan Health Agency, Nyoman Suratmika, said on Tuesday (Apr. 24) that since the beginning, Tabanan indeed targeting the achievement of JE immunization for 100 percent or achieve all the targets specified by the Ministry of Health even though the ministry itself targeted the JE immunization for Bali is 95 percent.

Related to the exceeding percentage of achievement, Suratmika said it means that Tabanan managed to cover the real data in the field. This indicates the officers work harder in reaching the children of age

According to Suratmika, despite exceeding the target, the officers will still make a sweep to the field so the age target of children who have not received immunization can be reached. He estimated there are still children having not been immunized for some reasons, such as of being sick, traveling and family remaining to reject the JE immunization for their children. Raka Sandi continued there is no re-broadcast, delayed broadcast or edited broadcast related to the debate. If there are candidate pairs editing the debate broadcast and disseminating it on social media, it is the same as breaking the agreement. Moreover, Bali Electoral Commission always listens to suggestions from the winning team of each candidate pair.

“It is limited so that there

will be no substantial shift of the debate or information that is not intact, so that it can result in miscommunication in the community,” he said.

Chairman of Bali Electoral Commission (KPU), I Dewa Kade Wiarsa Raka Sandi, said the first debate will be held at Goodway Hotels & Resorts, Nusa Dua, on Saturday (Apr. 28) starting at 19:30 local time. The event will be broadcast live by TVOne and moderated by Indiarto Priadi.

“The main issue to be raised in this first debate is to advance and resolve regional issues, with sub-themes of economy, tourism, agriculture and the environment,” he said in a press statement at the office of Bali Electoral Commission on Tuesday (Apr. 24).

According to Raka Sandi, the Bali Electoral Commission has previously prepared and formed a drafting team from a number of universities. Among them, there is Undiknas University for material formulation team and questions with economic subtheme, Udayana University for agriculture and environmental subtheme, as well as Bali Tourism Institute (STP) Nusa Dua for tourism sub-themes.

“There is a stamped statement from each of the drafting teams to maintain the integrity and confidentiality of the question,” he added accompanied by a member of Bali Electoral Commission, Ni Wayan Widiastini.

CONTEMPORARY Makepung (Buffalo Race) dance is now often performed simultaneously with jegog gamelan music. In various arts and performing events, the dance depicting the tradition of Makepung returns to be encouraged. Some time ago in a cultural parade, the dance was staged colossally with hundreds of dancers consisting of junior high and high school students.

This contemporary dance created by I Ketut Suwentra or better known Grandpa Jegog first appeared in 1984. The dance became a final assignment to obtain baccalaureate degree in the Denpasar Art

College (ASTI). This dance reflects the agrarian culture of Jembrana especially the makepung attraction.

Generally, this dance is played by around seven dancers consisting of three men and four women. The dancers have their respective roles describing the movement in the buffalo race. Four dancers serve as a wheel, a dancer as buffalo and respectively a dancer as coachman and buffalo rider.

Movement of this contemporary dance tends to be different from the dances in general. The dancer who plays buffalo, for instance, shows dance movement like a walking, drinking and bathing buffalo and

Makepung Dance depicts buffalo races with Jegog accompaniment others expressed through the graceful dance movement. In terms of their costumes, the female dancers generally put on a number of accessories used by buffalo while competing, including rustling bells mounted on the legs. Meanwhile, the male dancers put on clothing like a coachman of buffalo race with a whip.

In addition to buffalo, the other dancers have different movements in accordance with their respective role. When mixed together, it makes matching symbolic movements depicting buffalo races, especially at the end before the dance is completed.

In the staging, from the beginning to the end spectators can experience typical atmosphere of Jembrana. Moreover, this dance is accompanied with Jegog music which is also one of the Jembrana characteristics. When danced together, people can see the movements ranging from preparation before the race to the implementation of the buffalo race. The longer, the rhythm of gamelan music is getting faster.

This Makepung Dance is often staged intactly in a number of cultural events including the cultural parade some time ago, tailored to the venue of the staging. Thus, it involved hundreds of students.

ANZAC Day Commemoration 2018

The Australian Consulate-General in Bali, along with representatives of the New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta, held a small dawn service this morning to commemorate Anzac Day. Each year on 25 April, Australians and New Zealanders gather to remember the servicemen and women who have served their nation in times of war, in conflicts and on peacekeeping operations.

The Anzac tradition was established on 25 April 1915 when,more than 100 years ago,thousands of young Australian and New Zealand Army Corps troops landed on the shores of Gallipoli in Turkey at dawn

to begin a hard-fought campaign that lasted eight months.The anniversary of the landing is observed by Australians and New Zealanders at ceremonies around the world.

“As we pause to honour the past and the Anzac spirit, we also recognise today’s veterans, the young men and women who have returned from places like Afghanistan and Iraq.

We honour their sacrifice through our remembrance” said Australian Consul-General, Dr Helena Studdert. ”The Anzac spirit lives in the hearts and minds of all Australians as we acknowledge the courage and

sacrifice of those who contributed so much in shaping the identity of our proud nation” added Dr Studdert.

The Anzac Day ceremony at the Australian Consulate-General was attended by Counsellor of New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta, Ms Barbara Welton, representatives of the Australian Defence Force, crew members from HMAS Broome and representatives of the Bali Provincial Government, Kodam IX Udayana, LanudNgurah Rai, Dan LanalBanyuwangi,Polda Bali, Badung and the Denpasar Government, as well as more than 200 Australians and New Zealanders in Bali.

Madonna loses bid to stop auction of intimate items

NEW YORK - Madonna lost Monday a nearly year-long bid to stop an auction of intimate items, including a breakup letter from rap legend Tupac Shakur.

A judge ruled that the Material Girl had directed her legal action against the wrong target in going after Darlene Lutz, a New York art dealer who helped Madonna build a collection before falling out with her.

Lutz had been the main source for 22 items, including love letters, cassettes and a hairbrush, that were up for sale by auction house Gotta Have Rock and Roll until a judge issued an injunction in July.

New York Judge Gerald Lebovits, in a ruling based on narrow legal grounds rather than on Madonna’s claims of violations of privacy, agreed with Lutz, who said that her disputes with Madonna were settled by a 2004 legal agreement between the former friends.

Lebovits, in a decision dated last week but made public Monday, also questioned why Madonna was pursuing Lutz and not the singer’s assistants, who Madonna said had handed items to the art dealer.

“If plaintiff’s allegations are accepted as true -- that Lutz received the letters through inadvertent actions of the plaintiff’s assistants,” Lebovits wrote, then her case against Lutz is “time-barred and improper.”

The auction house said it would press ahead in July with the sale of Madonna merchandise including the offending letter from Tupac.

In a statement, Gotta Have Rock and Roll said it had been confident about the case and had done “substantial due diligence” before first announcing the auction.

Judd Grossman, a lawyer for Lutz, called the court decision “a total win.”

“Ms Lutz is now free to do with her property as she pleases without any continued interference by Madonna,” Grossman said.

A lawyer for Madonna did not immediately respond to requests for comment. (afp)

Indonesia oil well explosion kills 15, dozens injured

The death toll from an illegal oil well blaze in Indonesia has jumped to 15 with dozens injured, authorities said Wednesday, warning that there could be more victims of the explosion. Images from the accident showed a towering flame shooting some 70 metres (230 feet) in the air above homes and palm trees dotting a small community in Sumatra island’s Aceh province.

Firefighters on Wednesday afternoon were still battling the blaze sparked by an oil spill at about 1:30 am (1830 GMT Tuesday) in a residential area. Several homes were also destroyed. “The number of fatalities now stands at 15 people,” said Syahrizal Fauzi, head of the local disaster

mitigation agency. “We’re still unable to control the fire. We don’t know if there are still victims because we cannot get any closer.” Authorities initially said at least 10 people died and some 40 “severely injured” victims were being treated.

Saudi king to launch ‘entertainment city’

RIYADH - Saudi King Salman will launch the construction of an “entertainment city” near Riyadh Wednesday, authorities said, part of a series of multi-billion dollar projects as the kingdom seeks to diversity its oil-reliant economy.

The 334-square kilometre project in Qiddiya, southwest of Riyadh, would rival Walt Disney and include high-end theme parks, motor sport facilities and a safari park, officials say.

The facility highlights a “relentless effort to develop giga-projects that will help achieve many direct and indirect economic returns”, project official Fahd bin Abdullah Tounsi was quoted as saying in a government statement on Monday.

Qiddiya chief executive Michael Reininger said he expects the project will draw foreign investors in entertainment and other sectors, but did not specify the total cost of construction.

Such projects are the brainchild of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, a self-styled liberal change agent who is the chief architect of the sweeping “Vi-

sion 2030” reform programme.

Saudi Arabia has dazzled investors with several plans for hi-tech “giga projects”, funded in part by its sovereign wealth fund, but some sceptics question their viability in an era of cheap oil.

The kingdom has unveiled blueprints to build NEOM, a mega project billed as a regional Silicon Valley, in addition to the Red Sea project, a reef-fringed resort destination -- both worth hundreds of billions of dollars. Analysts say the projects could create funding pressures at a time when the government faces a yawning budget deficit and growth in the kingdom’s non-oil economy is only slowly gathering pace.

The reform stems partly from an economic motive to boost domestic spending on entertainment as the kingdom has been reeling from an oil slump since 2014.
