Filmmaking icon Tim Burton soars to new heights with ‘Dumbo’ LOS ANGELES - He has never liked the Big Top, mainly due to the caged animals and freaky clowns, but for legendary director Tim Burton there is no denying the romance of running away to join the circus. And even more so if the adventure involves a flying elephant, says the 61-year-old Californian, who is hitting red carpets with his 26th feature, a remake of the 1941 Disney classic “Dumbo.” “The thing I liked about ‘Dumbo’ was just the idea -- the image of a flying elephant and a misfit -- and all that sort of stuff is very appealing to me,” he told AFP. The visionary behind a slew of hits spanning four decades, from Gothic animation to screwball comedy, Burton recalls being something of a misfit himself -- the other kids at school called him “weirdo.” But like “Dumbo,” Burton’s Achilles heel was his superpower. The outsider persona gave him space to grow into one of Hollywood’s most sought-after creatives when he might just have been part of the crowd. The theme of alienation or disability as a source of strength runs through much of his oeuvre, and his

most recognizable characters, from Beetlejuice and Batman at the start of his career through Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and Sweeny Todd, have been outsiders. “You can have a misfit perceived as something and they use that as a positive thing,” says Burton, pointing to Dumbo’s big, floppy ears -- a source of shame that becomes an advantage. The live action update follows the 1941 animated Disney fable in some aspects -- as in the original, Burton’s pachyderm protagonist is mute -- but the human characters get a bigger role. And while Jon Favreau’s 2017 “Beauty and the Beast” hewed close to the 1991 animated version -- notwithstanding some extraneous backstory -- “Dumbo” is a very different creature from its wartime progenitor. “I felt liberated that I didn’t have to follow too much, because it’s not really a story, it’s a very simple fable,” Burton told AFP. Among the new stuff, the movie manages to retain some of the elements which gave the original its charm, such as the heartbreaking scene in which Dumbo visits his caged mother. (afp)

The British actress, who rose to fame playing Daenerys Targaryen in the fantasy TV series, has spoken for the first time about the life-threatening experience and having surgery to avoid a potential second. Writing in The New Yorker, the 32-year-old recalled getting a headache at a gym in north London in 2011 before collapsing in the toilets.

She said: “I reached the toilet, sank to my knees and proceeded to be violently, voluminously ill. “Meanwhile, the pain - shooting, stabbing, constricting pain - was getting worse. Clarke had suffered a subarachnoid haemorrhage - a lifethreatening type of stroke caused by bleeding in the brain. She was 24 years old at the

opening up her skull, Clarke was unable to remember her name when she woke up. She wrote: “My full name is Emilia Isobel Euphemia Rose Clarke. But now I couldn’t remember it. “Instead, nonsense words tumbled out of my mouth and I went into a blind panic. I’d never experienced fear like that - a sense of doom closing in.” (net)

A mother and her daughter look at tributes left as a tribute to victims of the twin mosque massacre in a park outside the Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch on March 23, 2019. Muslims prayed at Christchurch’s main mosque for the first time since a white supremacist massacred worshippers there as New Zealand sought to return to normality after the tragedy.

New Zealand orders top-level inquiry into mosque massacres

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Monday ordered an independent judicial inquiry into whether police and intelligence services could have prevented the Christchurch mosque attacks on March 15. Ardern said a royal commission -- the most powerful judicial probe available under New Zealand law -was needed to find out how a single gunman was able to kill 50 people in an attack that shocked the world. “It is important that no stone is left unturned to get to how this act of terrorism occurred and how we could have stopped it,” she told reporters. New Zealand’s spy

agencies have faced criticism in the wake of the attack for concentrating on the threat from Islamic extremism. Instead, the victims were all Muslims and the massacre was allegedly carried out by a white supremacist fixated on the belief that there was an Islamist plot to “invade” Western countries. “One question we need to answer is whether or not we could or should

have known more,” Ardern said. “New Zealand is not a surveillance state ... but questions need to be answered.” Ardern ruled out New Zealand re-introducing the death penalty for accused gunman Brenton Tarrant, 28, who was arrested minutes after the attack on the mosques and has been charged with murder. She said details of the royal commission were being finalised, but it would be comprehensive and would report in a timely manner. It will cover the activities of intelligence services, police, cus-

toms, immigration and any other relevant government agencies in the lead-up to the attack. The gunman livestreamed the attack online, although New Zealand has outlawed the footage as “objectionable content”. Ardern reiterated her believe it should not be aired. “That video should not be shared. That is harmful content,” she said when questioned about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan showing excerpts of the footage at campaign rallies for local elections this month. Erdogan had angered both Wel-

lington and Canberra with campaign rhetoric about anti-Muslim Australians and New Zealanders being sent back in “coffins” like their grandfathers at Gallipoli, a World War I battle. Continued to page 6
