Melissa McCarthy wins worst-actress Razzie, but there’s a silver lining

R&B singer R. Kelly arrives at the 1st District-Central police station on February 22, 2019 in Chicago, Illinois.

Singer R. Kelly, facing sex abuse charges, gets $1 million bail CHICAGO - A US judge set $1 million bail for R&B superstar R. Kelly on Saturday after prosecutors laid out graphic details of charges that he sexually abused four victims, three of them minors. Kelly, known for hits like “I Believe I Can Fly,” surrendered to police late Friday after decades of allegations of sexual abuse, especially of underage girls, led to the first sexual assault charges against him. Kelly was acquitted in a child porn trial more than a decade ago, and had maintained a steady fan base and continued to perform. But his fortunes changed after a docuseries last month led Chicago prosecutors to publicly seek out any potential victims. A Chicago grand jury on Friday charged him with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse against four females,

the youngest 14 years old at the time of the alleged crimes, which spanned between 1998 and 2010. The charges carry three to seven years of prison per count. A grave-faced Kelly appeared in a packed courtroom in a black hooded sweatshirt with his hands handcuffed behind his back. Two women who had previously publicly accused him of abuse came to court to observe the proceedings. In setting bail, Cook County Judge John Fitzgerald Lyke Jr. ordered Kelly to have no contact with anyone under 18 years old, and to have no contact with any of the alleged victims or witnesses. The singer also was required to relinquish his passport. “He’s devastated,” Kelly’s attorney Steve Greenberg said. “Here is someone who at one point was a huge star. Now he is sitting behind bars.” (afp)

LOS ANGELES - Actress and comedian Melissa McCarthy might hope there’s truth in the saying that “all publicity is good publicity” now that she has won “Razzie” awards as worst actress for not one but two movies. The Golden Raspberry Awards, or Razzies -- given out annually on the eve of the more sought-after Academy Awards to “celebrate” the worst in cinema -- also found easy targets in comedy “Holmes & Watson” and potboiler “Fifty Shades Freed.” McCarthy, one of Hollywood’s most popular comic actresses, was cited for her roles in both “The Happytime Murders” (critic Jess Fenton said he was “underwhelmed; my sides were left unsplit”) and “Life of the Party” (trashed by critic Leigh Monson as “100 minutes of self-indulgence and tedium”). But the Razzies, which claim to be a constructive exercise in “cathartic mockery,” also granted McCarthy a Redeemer Award for her Oscar-nominated and widely praised performance as a curmudgeonly forger in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” Critic Joe Morgenstern said she played the part “with unerring wit and ferocious verve.” So there’s that. The Razzies’ crosshairs were squarely on “Holmes & Watson.” It nabbed not only the Worst Picture award but also a Worst Supporting Actor prize for John C. Reilly, a Worst Actor nomination for Will Ferrell, a Worst Screen Combo for the two of them (for “trashing two of literature’s most beloved characters”), a Worst

Director award for Etan Cohen, and a Worst Remake, Ripoff or Sequel prize for the film. Critics had been unsparing of the film -- a money-loser so far. A New York Times’ critic suggested “smuggling in booze to dispel the sense of dull routine.” US President Donald Trump was a big Razzie winner -- enough so that he might almost be tired of winning. He was named Worst Actor for appearances as himself in documentaries “Death of a Nation” and “Fahrenheit 11/9” (the latter movie, from director Michael Moore, also netted a Worst Supporting Actress award for his adviser Kellyanne Conway). A n d t h e Wo r s t Screen Combo award went to “Donald J. Trump and his self-perpetuating pettiness” for the same t w o films. (afp)

Cuaron wins three Oscars for ‘Roma’ but ‘Green Book’ is best film

Alfonso Cuaron bagged a hat trick of Oscars on Sunday for “Roma,” his love letter to his childhood in 1970s Mexico City, but controversial civil rights drama “Green Book” crashed his party with a win for best picture. The 57-year-old Mexican filmmaker won the prizes for best director, cinematography and foreign language film, capping a brilliant awards season for him -- and offering streaming giant Netflix a new feather in its cap. Diversity, though, was perhaps the biggest winner on a night when a beloved black filmmaker won his first competitive Oscar, a superhero blockbuster set in Africa scored big, and two black actors and an Egyptian firstgeneration American won three of the four acting prizes. The wide range of films honored at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre on Sunday bridged the divide between art house fare and popular blockbusters. “I grew up watching foreign language films, learning so much from them, being inspired -films like ‘Citizen Kane,’ ‘Jaws.’ And there are no waves, there’s only the ocean,” an emotional Cuaron said. “I think the nominees tonight have proven that we are part of the same ocean.” - Story ‘about loving each other’ “Roma” was the frontrunner going into the night with 10 nominations, despite spending little time in movie theaters, in keeping with Netflix’s customary release strategy. But “Green Book” -- the real-life story of a celebrated black pianist who befriends his white driver as they tour the segregated American South in the 1960s -- overcame a series of controversies to win the top prize. “The whole story is about love. It’s about

loving each other, despite our differences, and finding out the truth about who we are,” said director Peter Farrelly. “Green Book” also won a widely expected best supporting actor trophy for Mahershala Ali, and a best original screenplay award. But many criticized it as a feel-good movie that suffered from the so-called “white savior” complex, and veteran director Spike Lee made comments that suggested he was upset by its coronation. - We Are the Champions Rock legends Queen, fronted by US singer Adam Lambert, opened what turned out to be one of the more enjoyable ceremonies in recent years with a mini-medley of mega-hits “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions.” The British rockers may have experienced more nerves than during a normal gig: biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” was up for several awards and ended up the biggest winner of the night with four Oscars. The film -- which tracks the band’s rise to fame from the moment when Freddie Mercury joined the band in 1970 to their legendary 1985 Live Aid performance -- took statuettes for best actor Rami Malek, as well as sound editing, sound mixing and film editing. “We made a film about a gay man, an immigrant, who lived his life just unapologetically himself,” said Malek, whose spell-binding turn as Mercury captivated audiences. “The fact that I’m celebrating him and this story with you tonight is proof that we’re longing for stories like this.” (afp)

Alfonso Cuaron, winner of Best Foreign Language Film, Best Director and Best Cinematography for “Roma,” poses in the press room during the 91st Annual Academy Awards at Hollywood and Highland on February 24, 2019 in Hollywood, California.
