‘Birdman’ wins Producers Guild’s top trophy

LOS ANGELES — “Birdman” received a welcome lift on its flight to the Oscars after winning the Producers Guild of America’s highest film award Saturday night at a ceremony in Los Angeles.

The win delivers needed momentum to Alejandro Inarritu’s showbiz romp following its upset loss to “The Grand Budapest Hotel” in the Golden Globes’ comedy category earlier this month. It’s now neck and neck in the Oscar race with Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood,” which won in the Globes drama category. Many of the PGA’s 6,700 members are also Oscar voters and for the past seven years, the guild’s choices for its top trophy went on to win the bestpicture prize at the Academy Awards. Other films that were up for the PGA’s top honor this year included “American Sniper,” ‘’Boyhood,” ‘’Foxcatcher,” ‘’Gone Girl,” ‘’The Grand Budapest Hotel,” ‘’The Imitation Game,” ‘’Nightcrawler,” ‘’The Theory of Everything” and “Whiplash.” Notably absent from the nominees was “Selma,” which had been named among the year’s best films by various industry groups, including an Oscar nomination. Other trophies presented Saturday night included “The Lego Movie” for animated feature, “Life Itself” for documentary film, “Fargo” for television movie or miniseries, “Breaking Bad” for TV drama series, “Orange is the New Black” for TV comedy series and “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee for digital series. Next up on the pre-Oscar awards circuit are Sunday night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Feb. 7 Directors Guild honors and the Writer Guild ceremony on Feb.14. The 87th annual Academy Awards will be presented Feb. 22. (ap)

Nikki Reed coy about love for Somerhalder

PARK CITY, Utah — Nikki Reed was coy when asked about her rumored engagement to actor Ian Somerhalder, saying only, “Life is really great right now and I’m so excited for the future.” But she was effusive about her love for animals. The entertainer came to Sundance on Saturday to host the third annual Catdance Film Festival, a celebration of cats on screen that benefits the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Reed says she’s been an animal advocate since she was a kid. “I learned how to change a cloth diaper on a raccoon,” she said. “I was

maybe 8 or 9.” Her mom let her bring home “any and every thing that needed love or needed food,” including, for a brief time, a coyote. Now Reed has nine pets of her own — two horses, four dogs and three cats — and provides foster care for countless other cats and dogs. She has taken in so many homeless animals that her mother recently moved in to help her care for all the critters. Cradling a tiny white kitten available for adoption, Reed says it was a natural fit for her to join Catdance, where all the felines on film are in need of homes. (ap)

Visa-free entry hopes boost tourism

DENPASAR - Bali provincial government is optimistic that visa-free access to the citizens of five countries can increase the number of foreign visitors to Bali. Head of the Bali Provincial Tourism Office Anak Agung Yuniarta explained that the countries to be included in the implementation of the visa-free program are viewed as potential markets of foreign tourists to Indonesia. “We need to include these countries in order to bring more tourists

to achieve the target of foreign visitors,” stated Yuniarta. Earlier, the government had provided visa-free facility to the citizens of China, Japan, South Korea, Russia, and Australia. These countries were selected as they were the main markets for Indonesian tourism. The increase in

the number of visa-free countries was needed to achieve the target of 20 million foreign visitors, or 450 thousand additional foreign tourists per year, by 2019. The number of foreign visitors to Bali rose 14.78 percent yearon-year to 3.41 million in the first 11 months of 2014, according to data made available by the Central Bureau of Statistics. An increase was recorded in the number of visitors from nine of the

10 main countries of origin. Visitors from Australia rose 18.7 percent to 895,069 from 754,049. The number of visitors from Australia constituted 26.18 percent of the total number of foreign visitors to Bali, followed by Chinese visitors totaling 539,371 or an increase of 49.28 percent, Malaysian visitors increasing 14.87 percent to 172,487 tourists, and Japanese tourists totaling 195,541 or an increase of 1.64 percent. Alec Baldwin memoir to be published in fall 2016

NEW YORK — Alec Baldwin is writing a memoir, and, yes, it will be candid. The award-winning actor has a deal with Harper for “Nevertheless,” scheduled for the fall of 2016. Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, told The Associated Press that the book will cover everything from Baldwin’s childhood in Long Island to his acclaimed work on “30 Rock” to the various run-ins and fallings-out he has experienced along the way, a story of “hits and flops, marriage, divorce,” and some “opinions on the media and politics.” Harper also announced that Baldwin, 56, will write the memoir himself. “Alec Baldwin is a larger-than-life talent with an astonishing range. And his life up to

now has been far from dull,” HarperCollins publisher Jonathan Burnham said in a statement. “In this memoir he writes about his family, lovers, friends and enemies, confronts his former demons, relives the highs and lows of his career, and opens up in an unflinchingly honest way about his life and times. This memoir will be funny, occasionally combative, often moving and an unbelievably good read.” Baldwin, formerly married to actress Kim Basinger, wrote about divorce and the family law system in the 2008 book “A Promise to Ourselves.” Financial terms for his new book were not disclosed.
