DeGeneres has global ‘goal’ for Oscarcast Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES — Ellen DeGeneres has high aspirations for her second time around hosting the Oscars.

“It reached the world,” the talk show host said of her well-received 2007 Oscarcast. “And I’m trying to get world peace. So, that’s my goal.

My hope is by hosting the Academy Awards, right afterward, we have world peace.”

DeGeneres may have been exaggerating but there’s no overstating her enthusiasm for the upcoming March 2 gig.

“I know a lot of those people,” she said of the Oscar audience. “They’re on my show a lot. I love the whole business. ... I get to play with all those people in the audience and make people happy, and, hopefully, relax them.”

President Yudhoyono to open WCF Antara

DENPASAR - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono left for Bali on Friday (Nov 22) to make a five-day working visit in the province. The president is expected to open World Culture Forum (WCF) 2013 with its theme “The Power of Culture in Sustainable Development, which will take place on Monday (Nov 25).

Security in the region of Gianyar, especially in Tampaksiring subdistrict, was intensified on Friday (Nov 22). Hundreds of police and military personnel were deployed from the morning along the road section leading to Tampaksiring Presidential Palace, Gianyar. It was made because President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) was in Tampaksiring Palace for two days. On Monday (Nov 25), the president is scheduled to attend the World Culture Forum (WCF) 2013.

President and First Lady Mrs. Ani Bambang Yudhoyono arrived at Tampaksiring Palace around 1:00 p.m. President SBY riding a black sedan vehicle of RI-1 opened the window when the car entered the Tampaksiring Palace.

The officials joining the entourage consisted of the State Secretary Sudi Silalahi, Cabinet Secretary Dipo Alam and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Jero Wacik. Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law and Security Djoko Suyanto, Minister of Forestry Zulkifli Hasan, Minister of Education Mohammad Nuh, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Mari Elka Pangestu, Minister of Environment Balthazar Kambuaya and Minister for Women Empowerment and Child Protection Linda Amalia Sari will join the entourage in the Bali WCF, posing an initiative of the president in 2005. The theme highlighted in this year’s event will be The Power of Culture in Sustainable Development. The WCF 2013 will be filled with six international symposiums taking place in parallel. Each symposium is going to present six speakers from various countries. The theme of symposium consists of Holistic Approaches to Culture in Development, Civil Society and Cultural Democracy, Creativity and Cultural Economics, Culture in Environment Sustainability, Sustainability Urban Development and the Interfaith Dialogue and Community Building.

Similarly, the culture based film festival from various countries will also enliven the implementation of the WCF 2013. The films will be screened continuously in theaters in Bali on November 24-28, 2013 under coordination of the film personage Slamet Rahardjo Djarot. Karangasem has a great potential in the agricultural sector in the broad sense. However, the sector has not been given serious attention so far.

It was revealed by two members of Karangasem House, Nyoman Oka Antara and Nyoman Sadra, Friday (Nov 22) in Karangasem.

Oka Antara from Kubu barren region said that his party had repeatedly provided input in order to develop the results of research on the planting of mango that could bear fruit beyond the natural season.

“Official of the Agriculture Agency has known that mango can be cultivated and can bear fruit throughout the season or beyond usual season, and it just needs to implement it,” he said.

Oka Antara said that Kubu had been known as the producer of mango. However, all this time all mango trees bore fruits in their natural season around November to January. During harvest season, the price of mango dropped because the harvest yields were abundant.

Farmers did not gain much. “Mean-

while, beyond the season there are no mangoes at all, even pregnant women craving a little mango are difficult to get it,” he said.

In the meantime, Nyoman Sadra conveyed the vision and mission of Karangasem Regent I Wayan Geredeg namely regarding the development of organic agriculture.

Even, the cattle urine would be processed into organic fertilizer and the products would be exported. “In fact, the organic farming en masse does not work and neither does the plan of processing cattle urine,” he said.

He said that his party did not want if the agricultural development was only put in discourse.

It should be taken seriously with a budget allocation as well as the skillful field outreach officers should be encouraged to develop the agriculture.

Headman of Dukuh Nengah Arta and headman of Tianyar Tengah Ketut Trimula said their village was the center for cashew plantation. Due to drought, less maintenance and fertilizers, many cashew trees in the area of Kubu died as having been attacked by white-rooted fungus disease.

Trimula said that farmers at his village had been familiar with the making of palm sugar. A team from the University of Ganesha Education (Undiksha) Singaraja had made a research on the making of palm sugar. However, so far only about two families who developed it due to sluggish marketing. “As the most labor-intensive, the agricultural sector should get more attention,” said Trimula. (013)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

HOUSTON — Yao Ming wears a variety of different hats since hanging up his size 18 shoes and retiring from the NBA in 2011. There’s the stressed out and probably overzealous Yao, owner of the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball League.

“I don’t want to talk about it because we just lost this morning,” Yao grumbles, shaking his head in his hands. There’s the 33-year-old second-year university student Yao who feels out of place in a classroom full of kids 12-15 years younger than he is.

And there’s the chilled out and introspective Yao, owner of a Napa Valley wine company, Yao Family Wines. The most successful Chinese player in NBA history certainly hasn’t used his retirement as a time to slow down — though he does like the wine business.

“This is a lifestyle,” he said in between sips of his $170 Yao Ming cabernet sauvignon. “It’s about friends chatting with each other, shared experiences and you need a (medium) to put everybody together.

And red wine is something you can enjoy with your friends. “Then sometimes on a peaceful afternoon you can sit right next to your window and read a book, listen to some soft music and drink a glass of wine.”

Yao worked closely with winemaker Tom Hinde on the brand being sold in China and the United States.

Yao was intimately involved because he didn’t want his name on something that wasn’t up to his standards. He knows that some will buy the wine simply because it bears his name, but he wanted it to have value for reasons apart from his fame.

Yao developed a taste for red wine while enjoying big Texas steaks with his teammates in his days with the Houston Rockets, and he started learning more about it from teammate Dikembe Mutombo. He released the Yao Ming cabernet and the $625 Yao Ming Family reserve, also a cabernet sauvignon, in 2011. This year, he’s launched a more reasonably priced wine with his $48 Napa Crest, a Bordeaux-style red blend.

Wine consumers in China haven’t yet warmed up to white wine, so Yao only makes red for now.

NEW YORK — Scientists have uncovered a 3,700-year-old wine cellar in the ruins of a Canaanite palace in Israel, and chemical analysis shows this is where they kept the good stuff.

Samples from the ceramic jars suggest they held a luxurious beverage that was evidently reserved for banquets, researchers said.

“It’s not wine that somebody is just going to come home from a hard day and kick back and drink,” said Andrew Koh of Brandeis University. He found signs of a blend of ingredients that may have included honey, mint, cedar, tree resins and cinnamon bark.

The discovery confirms how sophisticated wines were at that time, something suggested only by ancient texts, said Eric Cline of George Washington University.

The wine cellar was found this summer in palace ruins near the modern town of Nahariya in northern Israel. Researchers found 40 ceramic jars, each big enough to hold about 13 gallons, in a single room. There may be more wine stored elsewhere, but the amount found so far wouldn’t be enough to supply the local population, which is why the researchers believe it was reserved for palace use, Cline said.

The unmarked jars are all similar, as if made by the same potter, Yasur-Landau said. Chemical analysis indicates that the jars held red wine and possibly white wine, Koh said. No liquid was left, and he analyzed residues he had removed from the jars.

Patrick McGovern of the University of Pennsylvania, an expert in ancient winemaking, said the discovery “sheds important new light” on the development of winemaking in ancient Canaan, from which it later spread to Egypt and across the Mediterranean. He said the chemical analysis would have to be published before the ingredients of the wine could be assessed.

Curtis Runnels, an archaeologist at Boston University, called the finding significant not only in showing the sophistication of the wine, but also in suggesting that it was meant specifically for palace use. He noted that the chemical analysis showed each jar held wine from the same recipe, showing the “consistency and control you’d expect in a palace.”

Italian fugitive ready to extradite Vitale is wanted as a member of the infamous mafia group Costra Nostra. Operating in Palermo, Vitale and his associates are accused of various crimes, including extortion and vandalism.

“We appreciate the Bali courts decision to approve the extradition request. However, the implementation of the extradition itself will have to wait for an approval from President Susilo Bambang Yud-

hoyono, as mandated by Regulation Number 1/1979,” Untung said.

According to Untung, the extradition of Vitale proves that Indonesia is serious in handling extradition requests from other countries.

“Organised crime must be considered a common enemy of all countries. Indonesia is not a safe haven for fugitives from abroad,” he added.

Dengue fever cases hitting Gianyar in 2013 indicated a significant surge. In 2013 through October, there had been 610 cases of dengue fever in Gianyar, compared to the year 2012 reaching 288 cases. The majority of cases occurred in four subdistricts, namely Sukawati, Ubud, Gianyar and Blahbatuh.

The 5-year cycle of dengue fever in Gianyar County had changed into a 3-year cycle. Determination of the cycle was based on the assessment of research made by related institution. Any case occurred had been responded by the Health Agency through Local Public Health by means of fogging at location of the case to a radius of 100 meters.

Further, Ida Ayu Cahyani explained to have taken various measures to anticipate it. BEIJING — Rescuers said Sunday they found more bodies at the scene of oil pipeline blasts in eastern China, bringing the death toll in one of the country’s worst industrial accidents this year to 52.

Four more bodies had been found, according to the information office of the government of the port city of Qingdao. Eleven other people are still missing following Friday’s explosions from a ruptured oil pipeline owned by China’s largest oil refiner, Sinopec.

Rescuer efforts were continuing, the information office said. It said earlier that 136 people had been injured, 10 of whom were in critical condition.

The pipeline ruptured and leaked for about 15 minutes onto a street and into the sea before it was shut off. Hours later, as workers cleaned up the spill, the oil caught fire and exploded in two locations, the city government said.

Sinopec apologized Saturday for the explosions that ripped slabs of pavements and overturned vehicles. It said it would investigate and “give timely reports.”

It was China’s second-deadliest industrial accident of the year, after a chicken factory fire in June in northeastern Jilin province that killed 121 people.

was known if the safe had been in a damaged condition. The cash worth IDR 100,256,950 had disappeared from the safe. Besides, 4 units of installed CCTV camera were also looted.

Allegedly, the culprit had been professional and known the ins and outs of the scene. “Possibly, the culprit has known the situation of the location. Hence, the installed CCTVs were first taken,” said an officer of the Denpasar Metro Police, Friday (Nov 22).

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani endorsed the agreement, which commits Iran to curb its nuclear activities for six months in exchange for limited and gradual sanctions relief, including access to $4.2 billion from oil sales. The six-month period will give diplomats time to negotiate a more sweeping agreement.

It builds on the momentum of the public dialogue opened during September’s annual U.N. gathering, which included a 15-minute phone conversation between President Barack Obama and moderateleaning Rouhani, who was elected in June.

The package includes freezing Iran’s ability to enrich uranium at a maximum 5 percent level, which is well below the threshold for weapons-grade material and is aimed at easing Western concerns that Tehran could one day seek nuclear arms.

Obama hailed the pact’s provisions, which include curbs on Iran’s enrichment and other projects that could be used to make nuclear arms,

as key to preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear threat.

“Simply put, they cut off Iran’s most likely paths to a bomb,” he told reporters in Washington.

For Iran, keeping the enrichment program active was a critical goal.

Iran’s leaders view the country’s ability to make nuclear fuel as a source of national pride and an essential part of its insistence at nuclear self-sufficiency.

Giving up too much on the enrichment program would have likely brought a storm of protest by Iranian hard-liners, who were already uneasy over the marathon nuclear talks and Rouhani’s outreach to Washington.

In a nationally broadcast speech, Rouhani said the accord recognizes Iran’s “nuclear rights” even if that precise language was kept from the final document because of Western resistance.

BEIJING - The European Union’s trade chief called Friday for the bloc to defend itself more aggressively against Beijing, saying it would not “get anything from the Chinese by being polite”.

Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht spoke a day after the 28-nation EU held a summit with China at which the two sides launched negotiations for a landmark investment agreement. The meeting came as the EU and China have seen their commercial relationship grow dramatically, though it has also been characterised by increasing trade disputes over issues ranging from solar panels to wine.

“I don’t believe that you get anything from the Chinese by being polite,” De Gucht told reporters, quickly adding that the same was true the other way around.

“I mean we stand for our interests and they stand for theirs.” De Gucht emphasised that the EU should wield a bigger stick in line with its global clout.

China and the EU have butted heads over a number of commercial disputes this year, including at the World Trade Organisation.

Beijing and Brussels managed to avoid a trade war over cheap imports of Chinese solar panels, but other disputes, including on Chinese rare earth minerals and EU wine, are still simmering.

“We have to defend our interests,” De Gucht said. “And they also defend their interests and if there are conflicting interests we should try to get a solution.”

He added: “It’s our role and the more clearly we say it the more easily they will accept it.”

Trade between China and the EU amounted to $546.0 billion in 2012, according to Chinese customs data, with the country enjoying a significant surplus.

Though the economy of the United States is the largest in the world among individual countries followed by China at No. 2, the EU’s gross domestic product is slightly larger than that of the US and about twice as big as China’s.

De Gucht also said that China should not play an inordinately outsized role in terms of the EU’s overall policy.

“The EU’s trade strategy is not focused solely on China,” he said. “We should just treat them as any other trading partner. A big one, yes, (but) not the biggest one.”

He added: “We should be cool with respect to the Chinese.” Beijing said in June it had begun an anti-dumping probe into European wine, though De Gucht expressed optimism a solution can be worked out.

“It’s not an impossible case to resolve because it would be extremely difficult for the Chinese to demonstrate that there is dumping,” he said.

De Gucht also said that in the long-run there will be a free trade agreement between the EU and China. The investment accord, however, must come first, he stressed, and suggested that could take years depending on China’s willingness to open markets.

He also distanced the EU from comments by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on Thursday that the two sides will “work to increase trade to $1 trillion by 2020”.

De Gucht suggested such a figure, which would represent a near doubling of trade, was unlikely within such a short time.

“We will see what trade brings us, but this is not something that we have been negotiating, that number,” he said, adding the figure was “not part of the agreed text” of the summit.

Desperate for consumer bucks, US chain stores, some fighting for survival, are upping the ante this holiday shopping season with cutthroat discounts offered earlier than ever, and ever-longer opening hours.

The prize is not massive profits. It is just getting a big enough piece of the $600 billion consumers could spend to survive unfazed.

Giants like Walmart, Target and Best Buy, and online goliath Amazon, are squaring off with deals launched a week before traditional start of the Thanksgiving-Christmas shopping season.

Eyes are particularly on two department store chains that once ruled the holiday market -- Sears and JC Penney -- both wrestling for their corporate lives.

“It’s going to be a very intense shopping season,” with one less weekend than last year between the two big holidays, said Chris Christopher, director of consumer markets research at IHS

Global Insight.

Macy’s chief financial officer Karen Hoguet noted that the holiday shopping season will be “shorter and more intense” this year.

“We expect a heightened sense of urgency among customers,” she added.

Black Friday got its name from the shopping frenzy that accompanied early store openings and sharp discounts on popular merchandise on the day after Thanksgiving -- which falls on the fourth Thursday of November.

But in recent years, some stores moved their openings back to the evening of Thanksgiving, eroding what some saw as the sanctity of a national holiday, for both shoppers and employees.

Everyone is joining the fray this year, opening their doors from late afternoon on Thanksgiving day, November 28, and promising to stay open all night and throughout Friday.

In drought, residents still face water crisis

MANY pipelines of clean water and artesian wells, ponds and cistern projects are made in Karangasem. Despite many projects, local residents in the barren areas remain to complain about clean water crisis during the drought.

For instance, the pipeline project spending large amount of budget in Karangasem is the Telaga Waja water pipeline project namely at IDR 256 billion. Meanwhile, related the project of clean water pipeline for four districts, there is allegation of corruption involving the Regent of Karangasem I Wayan Geredeg (IWG) and eight staff. The project valued at IDR 27 billion.

In fact, the community in four subdistricts namely Karangasem, Manggis, Abang and Kubu that should be flushed with clean water services were even faced with water crisis. During the dry season until last month, the community in the four subdistricts still complained about the lack of clean water. Last month, a resident from particular hamlet at Antiga village complained because the water flow to his home did not work properly. Actually, the man had been asked to the Municipal Waterworks (PDAM) for several times.

Residents in Karangasem subdistrict, such as at Seraya Timur village, remained difficult to get clean water during dry season. Residents living on the hill areas had to look for water to the local river by dredging the drying out riverbed to get

clean water. Residents of Amlapura town, especially during peak hours of water usage such as for taking bath in the morning and evening, also faced the decline in the water flow.

Meanwhile, residents living above the Ababi village like at Umanyar to Belimbing also often queued in public tap to get clean water during dry season. According to Komang Suparta, a resident of Butus, local residents did not get water services from the pipeline project. In dry season when the rainwater in the cistern owned by residents had dried out, they were forced to purchase clean water. Suparta said two towers of water containing 8,000 liter were purchased at IDR 80,000. The water sufficed for two weeks.

Residents in Abang and Kubu subdistrict were also in the same boat. When the drought came, they screamed due to facing clean water crisis.

Hundreds of residents of two groups at Datah, three months ago came to the office of Datah headman one after another in order to convey their aspirations about the clean water crisis.

Hamlet chief of Padangsari, Tianyar Tengah, Kubu, Karangasem, Nengah Tis Suardana, complained about the water suctioning project from the wells on the edge of Lake Batur as it was only enjoyed by a few groups of people at Munti Gunung. Actually, said Tis, the Padangsari territory was lower than Munti Gunung. Supposedly, the water project could be resumed with the pipe connection of approximately 1.5 km. gWe stay to face clean water crisis. The matter

of water shortage in dry season is the toughest problem for us,h said Tis. BANGKOK — Christmas is not a holiday in predominantly Buddhist Thailand, and its palm trees outnumber pines, but the country still set a world record with its holiday spirit.

One of the country’s largest shopping malls arranged a publicity stunt involving 852 schoolchildren dressed in green and red hoodies to break the Guinness World Record for the largest human Christmas tree. They outdid a German record of 672 participants in 2011.

To the relief of parents, and the chagrin of a few teenagers, the children were not hoisted onto a human pyramid shaped like a conifer. It was more an exercise in crowd control, grouping the assembled 6- to 15-year-olds into a tree-like formation on the ground.

“I kind of thought we’d get to stand on each other’s shoulders,” said 13-year-old Nattakit Liewkulnattana. Like most participants at the event, he doesn’t celebrate Christmas. He wasn’t sure whose birthday the holiday marks (“Santa Claus?”) but was excited to take part in a world record, and maybe get something in return.

“I want presents!” the teen said. All participants got to keep their hoodies. The record was set in 15 minutes, 29 seconds.

Guinness representative Fortuna Burke certified the feat, counting on a clicker as children filed onto an outdoor verandah at Siam Paragon mall, the event’s organizer. Once in place, the children waved as a drone flew overhead to capture aerial images.

MILAN — Former Premier Silvio Berlusconi was defiant ahead of an upcoming vote on removing him from the Senate, saying Saturday he would neither give up his seat voluntarily nor ask for a presidential pardon.

The Senate is set to vote Wednesday on removing Berlusconi from his seat over his conviction for tax fraud and fouryear jail sentence, confirmed by the nation’s highest court.

Berlusconi has no role in government but remains influential in the center-right and the prospect of his removal has raised tensions in the fragile coalition government.

Berlusconi told the Naples daily Il Mattino in an interview Saturday that he would not consider resigning in advance of the vote, and that he expects “recognition of his role and political viability” from his allies in government. “I certainly can’t stay there to work with those who want to kill me,” he said.

Berlusconi, whose center-right is joined in a fragile coalition with the Democratic Party, has indicated he will join the opposition if he is pushed out of the Senate, as expected. But the government’s survival should be guaranteed by a group of center-right lawmakers who have split from Berlusconi and formed their own party.

Berlusconi addressed a group of young members of the new Forza Italia party, which he has relaunched to invigorate his base, telling them that the vote to remove him is tantamount to a government coup and was based on “an incredible verdict, absolutely unfounded, used to lay the groundwork of the political murder of the center-right leader.”

US man reunited with motorcycle, 46 years later Associated Press Writer

OMAHA, Nebraska — A U.S. man has been reunited with his now-vintage motorcycle nearly 50 years after it was stolen. Donald DeVault received the 1953 Triumph Tiger 100 on Wednesday.

The 73-year-old DeVault learned two weeks ago that California authorities had recovered his motorcycle at the Port of Los Angeles. The bike was about to be shipped to Japan when customs agents who checked the vehicle identification number discovered it had been reported

stolen in February 1967.

The bike was valued at $300 in 1967.

Today, it’s worth about $9,000. DeVault’s first reaction? To hug the man who found the bike. His next move was — naturally — to take the motorcycle for a ride in the parking lot.

DeVault had had the bike for only a year or two when it was taken from his fenced backyard.

DeVault already has a Harley-Davidson and a Kawasaki motorcycle in his garage, so he plans to reserve the Triumph for special rides.

JAKARTA - Indonesian researchers said they have discovered what is believed to be the wreck of a German submarine that was torpedoed off the main island of Java during World War II. A team found the wreck -- which contained at least 17 human skeletons -- north of Java earlier this month after a tip-off from local divers.

Researchers believe it is submarine “U-168”, which succeeded in sinking several allied vessels before itself being torpedoed by a Dutch submarine in 1944.

“This is the first time we have found a foreign submarine from the war in our waters,” said Bambang Budi Utomo, head of the research team at the National Archaeology Centre that found the vessel.

“This is an extraordinary find that will certainly provide useful information about what took place in the Java Sea during World War II.” As well as the human skeletons, dinner plates bearing swastikas, batteries, binoculars and a bottle of hair oil were pulled from the wreck.

He said further tests were being carried out on the objects to confirm the submarine was “U-168”.

“There could be more people in there. We are open to assistance from the German government to research this area of their history,” he added.

Utomo said it was unlikely the wreck, some 60 miles (100 kilometres) northeast of Karimunjawa island, would be lifted from the seabed any time soon because of its sheer size and the cost involved.

Japan occupied Indonesia during World War II, which was then still known by its colonial name of the Dutch East Indies. Tokyo and Berlin were allies during the war.

Several thousand people left their homes overnight, taking the total number of those who have fled since the volcano rumbled to life to around 12,300, said the national disaster agency.

“People panicked last night as the eruption was accompanied by a loud thunderous sound and vibrations. Then it started raining down rocks,” said local government official Robert Peranginangin.

“They ran helter-skelter out of their homes and cried for help.”

He added there were no known casualties from the latest eruptions.

The volcanology agency raised the alert level for the volcano, on the northern tip of Sumatra island, to the highest point on a four-stage scale, meaning a hazardous eruption is imminent or under way.

National disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the government was calling for people living within five kilometres (3.1 miles) of the volcano to leave their homes.

Sinabung, one of dozens of active volcanoes in Indonesia which straddles major tectonic fault lines known as the “Ring of Fire”, erupted in September for the first time since 2010.

In August five people were killed and hundreds evacuated when a volcano on a tiny island in East Nusa Tenggara province erupted.

The country’s most active volcano, Mount Merapi in central Java, killed more than 350 people in a series of violent eruptions in 2010.

Sharapova takes on Groeneveld as coach

Four-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova has hired Sven Groeneveld as her new coach for the 2014 season. The Russian world number four made the announcement on her Facebook page on Thursday after being without a coach since parting ways with Jimmy Connors in August. Connors lasted just a month after joining the 26-year-old following the Wimbledon tournament in July. “I’m happy to announce my official partnership with Sven Groeneveld,” Sharapova wrote.

“We’ve been working together since I got back on the court and after seeing him on the opposing side for so many years, I’m excited to have him become a part of my team.

Sharapova takes on Groeneveld as coach

Four-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova has hired Sven Groeneveld as her new coach for the 2014 season. The Russian world number four made the announcement on her Facebook page on Thursday after being without a coach since parting ways with Jimmy Connors in August. Connors lasted just a month after joining the 26-year-old following the Wimbledon tournament in July. “I’m happy to announce my official partnership with Sven Groeneveld,” Sharapova wrote.

“We’ve been working together since I got back on the court and after seeing him on the opposing side for so many years, I’m excited to have him become a part of my team.

“It has been a very seamless transition and I have had a lot of fun with the hard work we have put in so far. Looking forward to the year ahead.”

BANGKOK — Christmas is not a holiday in predominantly Buddhist Thailand, and its palm trees outnumber pines, but the country still set a world record with its holiday spirit.

One of the country’s largest shopping malls arranged a publicity stunt involving 852 schoolchildren dressed in green and red hoodies to break the Guinness World Record for the largest human Christmas tree. They outdid a German record of 672 participants in 2011.

To the relief of parents, and the chagrin of a few teenagers, the children were not hoisted onto a human pyramid shaped like a conifer. It was more an exercise in crowd control, grouping the assembled 6- to 15-year-olds into a tree-like formation on the ground.

“I kind of thought we’d get to stand on each other’s shoulders,” said 13-year-old Nattakit Liewkulnattana. Like most participants at the event, he doesn’t celebrate Christmas. He wasn’t sure whose birthday the holiday marks (“Santa Claus?”) but was excited to take part in a world record, and maybe get something in return.

“I want presents!” the teen said. All participants got to keep their hoodies. The record was set in 15 minutes, 29 seconds.

Guinness representative Fortuna Burke certified the feat, counting on a clicker as children filed onto an outdoor verandah at Siam Paragon mall, the event’s organizer. Once in place, the children waved as a drone flew overhead to capture aerial images.

Although Christmas does not appear on Thai calendars and is a regular workday, hotels and shopping malls decorate starting in mid-November for what is a big shopping season during Thailand’s peak tourism months.

Thais also set other off-beat records this year. On Valentine’s Day, a couple set a record for longest kiss (58 hours, 35 minutes and 58 seconds). MILAN — Former Premier Silvio Berlusconi was defiant ahead of an upcoming vote on removing him from the Senate, saying Saturday he would neither give up his seat voluntarily nor ask for a presidential pardon.

The Senate is set to vote Wednesday on removing Berlusconi from his seat over his conviction for tax fraud and fouryear jail sentence, confirmed by the nation’s highest court.

Berlusconi has no role in government but remains influential in the center-right and the prospect of his removal has raised tensions in the fragile coalition government.

Berlusconi told the Naples daily Il Mattino in an interview Saturday that he would not consider resigning in advance of the vote, and that he expects “recognition of his role and political viability” from his allies in government. “I certainly can’t stay there to work with those who want to kill me,” he said.

Berlusconi, whose center-right is joined in a fragile coalition with the Democratic Party, has indicated he will join the opposition if he is pushed out of the Senate, as expected. But the government’s survival should be guaranteed by a group of center-right lawmakers who have split from Berlusconi and formed their own party.

Berlusconi addressed a group of young members of the new Forza Italia party, which he has relaunched to invigorate his base, telling them that the vote to remove him is tantamount to a government coup and was based on “an incredible verdict, absolutely unfounded, used to lay the groundwork of the political murder of the center-right leader.”

US man reunited with motorcycle, 46 years later Associated Press Writer

OMAHA, Nebraska — A U.S. man has been reunited with his now-vintage motorcycle nearly 50 years after it was stolen. Donald DeVault received the 1953 Triumph Tiger 100 on Wednesday.

The 73-year-old DeVault learned two weeks ago that California authorities had recovered his motorcycle at the Port of Los Angeles. The bike was about to be shipped to Japan when customs agents who checked the vehicle identification number discovered it had been reported

stolen in February 1967.

The bike was valued at $300 in 1967.

Today, it’s worth about $9,000. DeVault’s first reaction? To hug the man who found the bike. His next move was — naturally — to take the motorcycle for a ride in the parking lot.

DeVault had had the bike for only a year or two when it was taken from his fenced backyard.

DeVault already has a Harley-Davidson and a Kawasaki motorcycle in his garage, so he plans to reserve the Triumph for special rides.

JAKARTA - Indonesian researchers said they have discovered what is believed to be the wreck of a German submarine that was torpedoed off the main island of Java during World War II. A team found the wreck -- which contained at least 17 human skeletons -- north of Java earlier this month after a tip-off from local divers.

Researchers believe it is submarine “U-168”, which succeeded in sinking several allied vessels before itself being torpedoed by a Dutch submarine in 1944.

“This is the first time we have found a foreign submarine from the war in our waters,” said Bambang Budi Utomo, head of the research team at the National Archaeology Centre that found the vessel.

“This is an extraordinary find that will certainly provide useful information about what took place in the Java Sea during World War II.” As well as the human skeletons, dinner plates bearing swastikas, batteries, binoculars and a bottle of hair oil were pulled from the wreck.

He said further tests were being carried out on the objects to confirm the submarine was “U-168”.

“There could be more people in there. We are open to assistance from the German government to research this area of their history,” he added.

Utomo said it was unlikely the wreck, some 60 miles (100 kilometres) northeast of Karimunjawa island, would be lifted from the seabed any time soon because of its sheer size and the cost involved.

Japan occupied Indonesia during World War II, which was then still known by its colonial name of the Dutch East Indies. Tokyo and Berlin were allies during the war.

SYDNEY - Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott Saturday said he had written to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as he seeks to steady relations which have been strained by allegations of espionage.

Claims that Australian spies targeted the phones of Yudhoyono, his wife and ministers in 2009 has sparked a snowballing diplomatic crisis.

Abbott said Canberra was committed to a strong relationship with Indonesia, a vital strategic and trading partner.

“There’ll be good days and there’ll be better days,” he said.

Several thousand people left their homes overnight, taking the total number of those who have fled since the volcano rumbled to life to around 12,300, said the national disaster agency.

“People panicked last night as the eruption was accompanied by a loud thunderous sound and vibrations. Then it started raining down rocks,” said local government official Robert Peranginangin.

“They ran helter-skelter out of their homes and cried for help.”

He added there were no known casualties from the latest eruptions.

The volcanology agency raised the alert level for the volcano, on the northern tip of Sumatra island, to the highest point on a four-stage scale, meaning a hazardous eruption is imminent or under way.

National disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the government was calling for people living within five kilometres (3.1 miles) of the volcano to leave their homes.

Sinabung, one of dozens of active volcanoes in Indonesia which straddles major tectonic fault lines known as the “Ring of Fire”, erupted in September for the first time since 2010.

In August five people were killed and hundreds evacuated when a volcano on a tiny island in East Nusa Tenggara province erupted.

The country’s most active volcano, Mount Merapi in central Java, killed more than 350 people in a series of violent eruptions in 2010.

BEIJING - The European Union’s trade chief called Friday for the bloc to defend itself more aggressively against Beijing, saying it would not “get anything from the Chinese by being polite”.

Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht spoke a day after the 28-nation EU held a summit with China at which the two sides launched negotiations for a landmark investment agreement. The meeting came as the EU and China have seen their commercial relationship grow dramatically, though it has also been characterised by increasing trade disputes over issues ranging from solar panels to wine.

“I don’t believe that you get anything from the Chinese by being polite,” De Gucht told reporters, quickly adding that the same was true the other way around.

“I mean we stand for our interests and they stand for theirs.” De Gucht emphasised that the EU should wield a bigger stick in line with its global clout.

China and the EU have butted heads over a number of commercial disputes this year, including at the World Trade Organisation.

Beijing and Brussels managed to avoid a trade war over cheap imports of Chinese solar panels, but other disputes, including on Chinese rare earth minerals and EU wine, are still simmering.

“We have to defend our interests,” De Gucht said. “And they also defend their interests and if there are conflicting interests we should try to get a solution.”

He added: “It’s our role and the more clearly we say it the more easily they will accept it.”

Trade between China and the EU amounted to $546.0 billion in 2012, according to Chinese customs data, with the country enjoying a significant surplus.

Though the economy of the United States is the largest in the world among individual countries followed by China at No. 2, the EU’s gross domestic product is slightly larger than that of the US and about twice as big as China’s.

De Gucht also said that China should not play an inordinately outsized role in terms of the EU’s overall policy.

“The EU’s trade strategy is not focused solely on China,” he said. “We should just treat them as any other trading partner. A big one, yes, (but) not the biggest one.”

He added: “We should be cool with respect to the Chinese.” Beijing said in June it had begun an anti-dumping probe into European wine, though De Gucht expressed optimism a solution can be worked out.

“It’s not an impossible case to resolve because it would be extremely difficult for the Chinese to demonstrate that there is dumping,” he said.

De Gucht also said that in the long-run there will be a free trade agreement between the EU and China. The investment accord, however, must come first, he stressed, and suggested that could take years depending on China’s willingness to open markets.

He also distanced the EU from comments by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on Thursday that the two sides will “work to increase trade to $1 trillion by 2020”.

De Gucht suggested such a figure, which would represent a near doubling of trade, was unlikely within such a short time.

“We will see what trade brings us, but this is not something that we have been negotiating, that number,” he said, adding the figure was “not part of the agreed text” of the summit.

Desperate for consumer bucks, US chain stores, some fighting for survival, are upping the ante this holiday shopping season with cutthroat discounts offered earlier than ever, and ever-longer opening hours.

The prize is not massive profits. It is just getting a big enough piece of the $600 billion consumers could spend to survive unfazed.

Giants like Walmart, Target and Best Buy, and online goliath Amazon, are squaring off with deals launched a week before traditional start of the Thanksgiving-Christmas shopping season.

Eyes are particularly on two department store chains that once ruled the holiday market -- Sears and JC Penney -- both wrestling for their corporate lives.

“It’s going to be a very intense shopping season,” with one less weekend than last year between the two big holidays, said Chris Christopher, director of consumer markets research at IHS

Global Insight.

Macy’s chief financial officer Karen Hoguet noted that the holiday shopping season will be “shorter and more intense” this year.

“We expect a heightened sense of urgency among customers,” she added.

Black Friday got its name from the shopping frenzy that accompanied early store openings and sharp discounts on popular merchandise on the day after Thanksgiving -- which falls on the fourth Thursday of November.

But in recent years, some stores moved their openings back to the evening of Thanksgiving, eroding what some saw as the sanctity of a national holiday, for both shoppers and employees.

Everyone is joining the fray this year, opening their doors from late afternoon on Thanksgiving day, November 28, and promising to stay open all night and throughout Friday.

MANY pipelines of clean water and artesian wells, ponds and cistern projects are made in Karangasem. Despite many projects, local residents in the barren areas remain to complain about clean water crisis during the drought.

For instance, the pipeline project spending large amount of budget in Karangasem is the Telaga Waja water pipeline project namely at IDR 256 billion. Meanwhile, related the project of clean water pipeline for four districts, there is allegation of corruption involving the Regent of Karangasem I Wayan Geredeg (IWG) and eight staff. The project valued at IDR 27 billion.

In fact, the community in four subdistricts namely Karangasem, Manggis, Abang and Kubu that should be flushed with clean water services were even faced with water crisis. During the dry season until last month, the community in the four subdistricts still complained about the lack of clean water. Last month, a resident from particular hamlet at Antiga village complained because the water flow to his home did not work properly. Actually, the man had been asked to the Municipal Waterworks (PDAM) for several times.

Residents in Karangasem subdistrict, such as at Seraya Timur village, remained difficult to get clean water during dry season. Residents living on the hill areas had to look for water to the local river by dredging the drying out riverbed to get

clean water. Residents of Amlapura town, especially during peak hours of water usage such as for taking bath in the morning and evening, also faced the decline in the water flow.

Meanwhile, residents living above the Ababi village like at Umanyar to Belimbing also often queued in public tap to get clean water during dry season. According to Komang Suparta, a resident of Butus, local residents did not get water services from the pipeline project. In dry season when the rainwater in the cistern owned by residents had dried out, they were forced to purchase clean water. Suparta said two towers of water containing 8,000 liter were purchased at IDR 80,000. The water sufficed for two weeks.

Residents in Abang and Kubu subdistrict were also in the same boat. When the drought came, they screamed due to facing clean water crisis.

Hundreds of residents of two groups at Datah, three months ago came to the office of Datah headman one after another in order to convey their aspirations about the clean water crisis.

Hamlet chief of Padangsari, Tianyar Tengah, Kubu, Karangasem, Nengah Tis Suardana, complained about the water suctioning project from the wells on the edge of Lake Batur as it was only enjoyed by a few groups of people at Munti Gunung. Actually, said Tis, the Padangsari territory was lower than Munti Gunung. Supposedly, the water project could be resumed with the pipe connection of approximately 1.5 km. gWe stay to face clean water crisis. The matter

of water shortage in dry season is the toughest problem for us,h said Tis. Meanwhile, though there had been a clean water pipeline project from the Kesian springs, Ban village, Kubu, local residents were still in water shortage during dry season. A legislator of Karangasem House from Ban village Gede Tamu Sugiantara conveyed the clean water pipeline project in the four subdistricts worth IDR 27 billion more could not be enjoyed by residents at Ban. In the meantime, the Telaga Waja clean water pipeline project had not reached Ban village.

On the other hand, the Regent of Karangasem, I Wayan Geredeg, when interviewed last month related to the fulfillment of clean water for residents in the barren areas frequently facing the clean water crisis in dry season conveyed different things. According to him, in 2014 no residents of Karangasem would face clean water crisis. It happened because many water pipeline projects had been built. Moreover, there had been the Telaga Waja project.

In the meantime, the water demand for residents on highland areas having not been covered by the Telaga Waja water pipeline project and the pipeline in the four subdistricts would be supplied from the 12 existing dam projects. Dengue fever cases hitting Gianyar in 2013 indicated a significant surge. In 2013 through October, there had been 610 cases of dengue fever in Gianyar, compared to the year 2012 reaching 288 cases. The majority of cases occurred in four subdistricts, namely Sukawati, Ubud, Gianyar and Blahbatuh.

The 5-year cycle of dengue fever in Gianyar County had changed into a 3-year cycle. Determination of the cycle was based on the assessment of research made by related institution. Any case occurred had been responded by the Health Agency through Local Public Health by means of fogging at location of the case to a radius of 100 meters.

Further, Ida Ayu Cahyani explained to have taken various measures to anticipate it. The Gianyar Health Agency had coordinated with all hospitals and health centers in the Bali Province on the existence of dengue cases through the hospital-based surveillance program. This program was intended in order all hospitals and health centers in Bali Province could make coordination with the Gianyar Health Agency when any Gianyar resident was found to be positive to dengue fever at local hospital.

BEIJING — Rescuers said Sunday they found more bodies at the scene of oil pipeline blasts in eastern China, bringing the death toll in one of the country’s worst industrial accidents this year to 52.

Four more bodies had been found, according to the information office of the government of the port city of Qingdao. Eleven other people are still missing following Friday’s explosions from a ruptured oil pipeline owned by China’s largest oil refiner, Sinopec.

Rescuer efforts were continuing, the information office said. It said earlier that 136 people had been injured, 10 of whom were in critical condition.

The pipeline ruptured and leaked for about 15 minutes onto a street and into the sea before it was shut off. Hours later, as workers cleaned up the spill, the oil caught fire and exploded in two locations, the city government said.

Sinopec apologized Saturday for the explosions that ripped slabs of pavements and overturned vehicles. It said it would investigate and “give timely reports.”

It was China’s second-deadliest industrial accident of the year, after a chicken factory fire in June in northeastern Jilin province that killed 121 people.

After the officer came down to the scene, it

was known if the safe had been in a damaged condition. The cash worth IDR 100,256,950 had disappeared from the safe. Besides, 4 units of installed CCTV camera were also looted.

Allegedly, the culprit had been professional and known the ins and outs of the scene. “Possibly, the culprit has known the situation of the location. Hence, the installed CCTVs were first taken,” said an officer of the Denpasar Metro Police, Friday (Nov 22).

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani endorsed the agreement, which commits Iran to curb its nuclear activities for six months in exchange for limited and gradual sanctions relief, including access to $4.2 billion from oil sales. It builds on the momentum of the public dialogue opened during September’s annual U.N. gathering, which included a 15-minute phone conversation between President Barack Obama and moderateleaning Rouhani, who was elected in June.

The package includes freezing Iran’s ability to enrich uranium at a maximum 5 percent level, which is well below the threshold for weapons-grade material and is aimed at easing Western concerns that Tehran could one day seek nuclear arms.

Obama hailed the pact’s provisions, which include curbs on Iran’s enrichment and other projects that could be used to make nuclear arms,

as key to preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear threat.

For Iran, keeping the enrichment program active was a critical goal.

Iran’s leaders view the country’s ability to make nuclear fuel as a source of national pride and an essential part of its insistence at nuclear self-sufficiency.

Ancient wine cellar reveals a sophisticated drink

HOUSTON — Yao Ming wears a variety of different hats since hanging up his size 18 shoes and retiring from the NBA in 2011. There’s the stressed out and probably overzealous Yao, owner of the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball League.

“I don’t want to talk about it because we just lost this morning,” Yao grumbles, shaking his head in his hands. There’s the 33-year-old second-year university student Yao who feels out of place in a classroom full of kids 12-15 years younger than he is.

And there’s the chilled out and introspective Yao, owner of a Napa Valley wine company, Yao Family Wines. The most successful Chinese player in NBA history certainly hasn’t used his retirement as a time to slow down — though he does like the wine business.

“This is a lifestyle,” he said in between sips of his $170 Yao Ming cabernet sauvignon. “It’s about friends chatting with each other, shared experiences and you need a (medium) to put everybody together.

And red wine is something you can enjoy with your friends. “Then sometimes on a peaceful afternoon you can sit right next to your window and read a book, listen to some soft music and drink a glass of wine.”

Yao worked closely with winemaker Tom Hinde on the brand being sold in China and the United States.

Yao was intimately involved because he didn’t want his name on something that wasn’t up to his standards. He knows that some will buy the wine simply because it bears his name, but he wanted it to have value for reasons apart from his fame.

Yao developed a taste for red wine while enjoying big Texas steaks with his teammates in his days with the Houston Rockets, and he started learning more about it from teammate Dikembe Mutombo. He released the Yao Ming cabernet and the $625 Yao Ming Family reserve, also a cabernet sauvignon, in 2011. This year, he’s launched a more reasonably priced wine with his $48 Napa Crest, a Bordeaux-style red blend.

Wine consumers in China haven’t yet warmed up to white wine, so Yao only makes red for now.

NEW YORK — Scientists have uncovered a 3,700-year-old wine cellar in the ruins of a Canaanite palace in Israel, and chemical analysis shows this is where they kept the good stuff.

Samples from the ceramic jars suggest they held a luxurious beverage that was evidently reserved for banquets, researchers said.

“It’s not wine that somebody is just going to come home from a hard day and kick back and drink,” said Andrew Koh of Brandeis University. He found signs of a blend of ingredients that may have included honey, mint, cedar, tree resins and cinnamon bark.

The discovery confirms how sophisticated wines were at that time, something suggested only by ancient texts, said Eric Cline of George Washington University.

He, Koh and Assaf Yasur-Landau of the University of Haifa in Israel spoke to reporters Thursday before their work was presented Friday at a meeting of the American Schools

of Oriental Research.

The wine cellar was found this summer in palace ruins near the modern town of Nahariya in northern Israel. Researchers found 40 ceramic jars, each big enough to hold about 13 gallons, in a single room. There may be more wine stored elsewhere, but the amount found so far wouldn’t be enough to supply the local population, which is why the researchers believe it was reserved for palace use, Cline said.

The unmarked jars are all similar, as if made by the same potter, Yasur-Landau said. Chemical analysis indicates that the jars held red wine and possibly white wine, Koh said. No liquid was left, and he analyzed residues he had removed from the jars.

Patrick McGovern of the University of Pennsylvania, an expert in ancient winemaking, said the discovery “sheds important new light” on the development of winemaking in ancient Canaan, from which it later spread to Egypt and across the Mediterranean. He said the chemical analysis would have to be published before the ingredients of the wine could be assessed.

Curtis Runnels, an archaeologist at Boston University, called the finding significant not only in showing the sophistication of the wine, but also in suggesting that it was meant specifically for palace use. He noted that the chemical analysis showed each jar held wine from the same recipe, showing the “consistency and control you’d expect in a palace.”

Italian fugitive ready to extradite Vitale is wanted as a member of the infamous mafia group Costra Nostra. Operating in Palermo, Vitale and his associates are accused of various crimes, including extortion and vandalism.

“We appreciate the Bali courts decision to approve the extradition request. However, the implementation of the extradition itself will have to wait for an approval from President Susilo Bambang Yud-

hoyono, as mandated by Regulation Number 1/1979,” Untung said.

According to Untung, the extradition of Vitale proves that Indonesia is serious in handling extradition requests from other countries.

“Organised crime must be considered a common enemy of all countries. Indonesia is not a safe haven for fugitives from abroad,” he added.

Karangasem has a great potential in the agricultural sector in the broad sense. However, the sector has not been given serious attention so far.

It was revealed by two members of Karangasem House, Nyoman Oka Antara and Nyoman Sadra, Friday (Nov 22) in Karangasem.

Oka Antara from Kubu barren region said that his party had repeatedly provided input in order to develop the results of research on the planting of mango that could bear fruit beyond the natural season.

“Official of the Agriculture Agency has known that mango can be cultivated and can bear fruit throughout the season or beyond usual season, and it just needs to implement it,” he said.

Oka Antara said that Kubu had been known as the producer of mango. However, all this time all mango trees bore fruits in their natural season around November to January. During harvest season, the price of mango dropped because the harvest yields were abundant.

Farmers did not gain much. “Mean-

while, beyond the season there are no mangoes at all, even pregnant women craving a little mango are difficult to get it,” he said.

In the meantime, Nyoman Sadra conveyed the vision and mission of Karangasem Regent I Wayan Geredeg namely regarding the development of organic agriculture.

Even, the cattle urine would be processed into organic fertilizer and the products would be exported. “In fact, the organic farming en masse does not work and neither does the plan of processing cattle urine,” he said.

Trimula said that farmers at his village had been familiar with the making of palm sugar. A team from the University of Ganesha Education (Undiksha) Singaraja had made a research on the making of palm sugar. However, so far only about two families who developed it due to sluggish marketing. “As the most labor-intensive, the agricultural sector should get more attention,” said Trimula. (013)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

DeGeneres has global ‘goal’ for Oscarcast Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES — Ellen DeGeneres has high aspirations for her second time around hosting the Oscars.

“It reached the world,” the talk show host said of her well-received 2007 Oscarcast. “And I’m trying to get world peace. So, that’s my goal.

My hope is by hosting the Academy Awards, right afterward, we have world peace.”

DeGeneres may have been exaggerating but there’s no overstating her enthusiasm for the upcoming March 2 gig.

“I know a lot of those people,” she said of the Oscar audience. “They’re on my show a lot. I love the whole business. ... I get to play with all those people in the audience and make people happy, and, hopefully, relax them.”

The president is expected to open World Culture Forum (WCF) 2013 with its theme “The Power of Culture in Sustainable Development, which will take place on Monday (Nov 25).
