‘Madea Halloween’ Edges Out ‘Jack Reacher 2’ With $27.6 Million

LOS ANGELES - It was a battle of the sequels at the multiplexes this weekend, as “Boo! A Madea Halloween” narrowly edged out “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” to claim first place at the domestic box office.

The latest film in the long-running Madea series racked up $27.6 million. Comedian Chris Rock may be entitled to a percentage of the gross. Creator Tyler Perry was inspired to take his pistol-packing grandma trick-or-treating after Rock’s comedian character in 2014’s “Top Five” joked that his latest movie, a passion project about a slave revolt, was going head-to-head at the box office with “Boo! A Madea Halloween.” What was once intended as satire eventually became a seasonally appropriate reality.

“This isn’t the end of the series, it’s just the beginning,” said Jeff Bock, box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations, who noted that Perry also scored with 2013’s “A Madea Christmas.” “There are so many holidays left.

There’s Easter, St. Patrick’s Day, and he hasn’t even done a Thanksgiving one yet.”

Don’t look for “Boo!” to end up in the Oscar race or on many reviewers’ “ten best” lists, but the Halloween comedy is a hit for distributor Lionsgate and reaffirms Perry’s star power. Despite being routinely derided by critics, the film series has an extremely loyal fan base.

Collectively they’ve earned nearly $380 million, enjoying capacious profit margins given that most of the movies cost less than a Papa John’s Super Bowl spot to produce. The latest Madea cost $20 million to make, and attracted a more diverse crowd. Typically the films have an audience that’s between 80% and 90% AfricanAmerican, but this installment’s crowd was only 60% African-American, with the rest of ticket buyers made up largely of Caucasians and Hispanic movie-goers.

“The film crossed over and it expanded the audience,” said David Spitz, co-president of domestic distribution at Lionsgate. “Madea is such a beloved character and the timing helped. There are not many comedies in the marketplace right now and Halloween is right around the corner.” (rtr)

Plane on French anti-smuggling mission crashes in Malta

VALLETTA - A light aircraft conducting a French surveillance mission over the Mediterranean crashed on take-off in Malta on Monday, killing all five people on board, Maltese authorities said.

The twin-prop Fairchild Metroliner crashed near the runway of the island’s main airport at about 7:20 a.m. (0520 GMT), sending smoke billowing into the sky, closing Malta International Airport for several hours in what was the country’s worst peacetime air incident. The flight was part of a customs operation the French have been conducting for the last five months, tracking human trafficking and drugs smuggling, the Maltese government said.

Airport officials said the plane had been heading for Misrata in Libya.

It was a “reconnaissance aircraft ... carrying out surveillance operations over the Mediterranean for the defence ministry,” French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said.

On board were three defence officials and two private contractors, all French, Le Drian said. All their remains were found, the Maltese government

said, adding that inquiries were under way to determine what had happened.

“Official information, footage and eyewitnesses ... clearly indicate that there was no explosion prior to impact,” the government said.

The flight was registered as local with Malta Air Traffic Services and was due to return to Malta within hours without landing in any other countries, the government said.

Airport sources initially said the plane was believed to be carrying officials from European Union border agency Frontex, but the organisation later said none of its staff were involved. The plane was registered in the United States and was leased to Luxembourg-based CAE Aviation.

This can be achieved by implementing seven charms (sapta pesona) consisting of safe, orderly, clean, cool, beautiful, friendly and memorable destination that are positive for visiting travelers, said Gunawan.

Gunawan said that tourism extension this year is held at Penatih village with the consideration that this village will be developed into a tourism village in Denpasar. To that end, it needs to be disseminated to the public so that they can support and play an active role in the development of Penatih tourism village and tourism development in Denpasar. To further motivate the presence of people, make it more interesting and cause more people to understand about the topic, this year’s extension is implemented through Cenkblong puppet show.

Economy of Kemenuh comes up after Bali bombing

GIANYAR — In the 1980s, Kemenuh village was known to be a village rich in culture. The culture was implemented in the art creativity through household craft. At that time, many markets, galleries and art shops were scattered at Kemenuh.

“After that, almost 80 percent of our residents are engaged in handicrafts,” said headman of Kemenuh, I Dewa Nyoman Neka, recently. With such craft activities, residents could accommodate labor force and it is economically meaningful for the life of Kemenuh village.

Unfortunately, after the first and second Bali bombing, people’s businesses went bankrupt. “Probably due to market share and other conditions of the world’s economy, our residents switched professions from craftsmen to farm laborers, handyman and other service provider,” he said when met at wantilan hall of Tangkulak Kaja.

Approximately 60 percent of people switched their profession.

Through the village administra-

tion, the Kemenuh began to be re-arranged. The emergence of national program for community empowerment (PNPM) to rural areas began to be felt. “With the program, we organize our public life with the empowerment and infrastructure development,” he explained.

His rural government explored the potential through this program.

The 60 percent of people having switched profession currently remains about 40 percent. The remaining returned to pursue craft making activities to support their economy. “We will try again to the forty percent,” he hoped. Former craft labors currently have opened independent craft businesses at their home.

In 2015, Kemenuh village got rural integrated development (gerbang sadu) program from provincial government amounting to IDR 1 billion and IDR 20 million is utilized for village-owned enterprise (BUMDes). Through savings and loan with interest rate of 0.5 percent, Kemenuh village helped 440 poor families in accessing capital.

Before being able to access the capital, the poor is provided with productive training. “They are expected to be independent at the household with the provision of training conditioned through PP and family planning, cake making and oblation making because many of our residents are selling oblations with the budget allocation through APBDes sourcing from village funds,” he said.

Having been considered to have skill, they are given capital. Currently, there are people running business by cultivating screwpine for the complement of oblation at one of Tegenungan hamlet and some others oblation making services, et cetera.

With a population of 9,786 people spreading over 11 hamlets and six customary villages, the district government through micro business license with the authority given to subdistrict head has provided access to people’s business credit. “At least, the goal of central, local and village government to provide empowerment will have an impact in the change of the economy,” he said. Smart mouth: Chinese fish fossil sheds light on jaw evolution

WASHINGTON - A bottom-dwelling, mud-grubbing, armored fish that swam in tropical seas 423 million years ago is fundamentally changing the understanding of the evolution of an indisputably indispensable anatomical feature: the jaw. head and much of the body and boasting jaws armed with bony plates that acted as teeth to slice and dice prey.

Fish were Earth’s first vertebrates when they appeared more than half a billion years ago, but they were primitive and jawless, with sucker-like mouths. Placoderms were the first vertebrates with jaws, a pivotal evolutionary

advance that enabled them to grasp prey, but they had no teeth.

Teeth appeared for the first time in later fish.

Qilinyu had three bones, the dentary, maxilla and premaxilla, that characterize the modern vertebrate jaw seen in bony fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, though they are absent in the cartilaginous sharks

and rays.

Scientists long viewed placoderms as a fascinating evolutionary dead-end. But the fossils of Qilinyu and another placoderm called Entelognathus that also possessed the three bones indicate that the elements of the modern jaw first appeared in placoderms.

The maxilla and premaxilla are bones of the upper jaw. The dentary is a bone of the lower jaw.

It appears they evolved from the bony plates that placoderms

used to sheer flesh in lieu of teeth, said paleontologist Per Ahlberg of Sweden’s University of Uppsala, who helped lead the study published in the journal Science.

“In us, the lower jaw is made entirely from the dentary. Most of the upper jaw is composed from the maxilla, but the bit that carries the incisor teeth is the premaxilla,” Ahlberg said.

The findings contradict the long-held notion that the modern jaw architecture evolved later, in the earliest bony fish. (rtr)

Europe’s Mars probe destroyed after plunging to surface FRANKFURT - Images taken by a NASA Mars orbiter indicate that a missing European space probe was destroyed on impact after plummeting to the surface of the Red Planet from a height of 2-4 km (1.2 to 2.5 miles), the European Space Agency said on Friday.

The disc-shaped, 577-kg (1,272 lb) Schiaparelli probe, part of the RussianEuropean ExoMars programme to search for evidence of life on Mars, descended on Wednesday to test technologies for a rover that scientists hope to send to the surface of the planet in 2020.

But contact with the vehicle was lost around 50 seconds before the expected landing time, leaving its fate uncertain until the NASA images were received.

“Schiaparelli reached the ground with a velocity that was much higher than it should have been, several hundred kilometres per hour, and was then unfortunately destroyed by the impact,” ExoMars Flight Director Michel Denis told Reuters TV. It was only the second European attempt to land a craft on Mars, after

Tapeworms endemic in Bali can cause cysticercosis disease

Scientists said on Thursday they unearthed in China’s Yunnan province fossils of a primordial fish called Qilinyu rostrata that was about 12 inches (30 cm) long and possessed the telltale bones present in modern vertebrate jaws including in people.

a failed mission by the British landing craft Beagle 2 in 2003.

The U.S. space agency’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has been circling the planet for about 10 years, took low-resolution pictures that show a bright spot that ESA believes is the 12metre parachute that Schiaparelli used to slow down. (http://bit.ly/2efEs3u) They also show a fuzzy dark patch, around 15 by 40 metres in size, about 1 km north of the parachute, which scientists interpret as having been created by the impact of the lander following a longer-thanplanned free fall.

ESA said it was possible that Schiaparelli’s landing was accompanied by an explosion, as its thrusters’ fuel tanks were probably still full.

The primary part of the ExoMars mission has, however, been a success so far, as the Schiaparelli lander’s mothership has been brought into orbit around Mars, from where it will try to sniff out methane and other gases that might indicate the presence of life. A European space lander reached Mars on October 19, 2016 in what scientists hope will mark a major milestone in exploration of the Red Planet, but whether it touched down on the surface in good working condition was far from certain.

DENPASAR - There are several regions in Indonesia becoming endemic to tapeworm (Taenia solium), namely; Bali, Papua, Samosir (North Sumatera) and Sulawesi. The highest number of people suffering from tapeworm is found in Bali -particularly the region of Kubu, Karangasem.

On Sunday (Oct. 23), Made Sudarmaja, a parasitologist from the Medical Faculty of Udayana University, in his presentation at the Asia Pacific Society for Medical Mycology Congress in conjunction with national symposium on tropical skin infection entitled ‘Medical Mycology in Asia Pacific: Towards on Health’ said that tapeworms can cause cysticercosis.

Data from the World Health Organization shows that 50,000 people have died from cysticercosis disease.

Cases of this disease are still found in Bali and Papua. In Bali, the number of cases continues to increase because in the past the matter of tapeworm infection was not considered a serious problem and not complained about but now since people want to have a good performance and smooth skin, more cases are being reported as people complain.

In Kubu subdistrict, Karangasem, the tapeworm case is the highest because people rarely have toilet while they defecate outside. Then, pigs are let roam around while they are the vector of tapeworm causing cysticercosis disease.

Tapeworm eggs ingested will hatch in the duodenum resulting in hexacant embryo.

This can penetrate the duodenal wall and come into blood circulation. Symptom of this disease shows no complaint. If any pain suffered by patients, it is only a mild pain, so that it is not considered serious.

Transmission of this disease can be through traveling, refugees and migration.

Cysticercosis can cause vision disorder, severe headaches, seizures, epilepsy and hydrocephalus. (may)

‘Human robot’ of Karangasem visited by some experts

DO you still remember 34 year old I Wayan Sumardana alias Tawan? ”This father of three, whose left hand is paralyzed, had shaken media publications a few months ago because of with his ability to design a robot to help him move his crippled hand allowing him to use it to work.

When met at his welding workshop on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 22), he said he was quite busy working and serving people in need of welding services. He has to work overtime because his contract for the 150 square meters of contracted land that he uses for his welding workshop is reaching its end.

The engineer from Germany encouraged Sumardana to design a machine to be used to melt and produce waste into useful products, such as household appliances. Clinton calls Trump a ‘sore loser’

CHARLOTTE - Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton called Donald Trump a “sore loser” on Sunday because of his refusal at their debate last week to commit to accepting the results of the Nov. 8 election.

Clinton, a former secretary of state, said Trump’s comments were more consistent with what dictators in non-democratic countries might say about their opponents.

“To say you won’t respect the results of the election, that is a direct threat to our democracy,” Clinton told a rally at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. “The peaceful transfer of power is one of the things that makes America America.”

“And look, some people are sore losers, and we just got to keep going,” she added.

Earlier on Sunday, Kellyanne Conway, a top Trump adviser, acknowledged that the Republican presidential candidate was lagging behind Clinton ahead of the election.

Conway said Clinton had “tremendous advantages,” including a large campaign war chest that had allowed her to spend millions on television ads.

“We are behind,” Conway said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” But she added the Trump campaign was looking to sway undecided voters not ready to support Clinton.

As the polling gap has widened, Trump has said repeatedly the election is being “rigged” against him. He has not offered evidence and numerous studies have shown that the U.S. election system, which is decentralized and run by the states, is sound.

At last week’s debate with Clinton in Las Vegas, Trump was asked if he would honor the result of the U.S. election.

UK banks fear public, politicians set against them on Brexit

LONDON - For decades, Britain’s bankers have relied on their industry’s outsized status in the economy to find a receptive ear in government. But in the aftermath of the country’s vote to leave the European Union, the sector that generates about a tenth of national economic output is grappling with an uncomfortable new reality where economics doesn’t always trump politics.

June’s vote to quit the EU has triggered a change in leadership and tone in the British government with new Prime Minister Theresa pledging an industrial revival and to build “an economy that works for everyone” - setting nerves jangling in the City of London global financial hub.

Reuters spoke to several senior bankers from big British and international banks based in the city, including some involved in discussions with the government over Brexit.

Many said their warnings about the impact of a so-called hard Brexit - where they lose their access to the European single market - were being met with scepticism by the government and accusations from some eurosceptic lawmakers that they were undermining the message that Britain can thrive outside the EU. “It’s almost as if we were back in the 1940s and we were looking for fifth columnists all over the place because people are trying to do Britain down,” said Ronald Kent of the British Bankers’ Association (BBA).

The term “fifth column” refers to a group of people that acts secretly against the state to assist an external enemy.

The head of the BBA, Anthony Browne, said on Sunday that the public and political debate was “taking us in the wrong direction” and that big international banks were preparing to move some operations out of Britain in early 2017.

The government has pledged to execute Brexit following a vote to leave the European Union that was driven in part by a desire to curb immigration and was regarded as a repudiation of a London elite, including a banking sector still the subject of lingering public anger over its role in the financial crisis.

While finance minister Philip Hammond and his ministerial colleagues have been keen to assert the financial industry is of great importance, officials say privately the Brexit deal will have to work for the country as a whole - and means the banking industry cannot expect special treatment.

Another banker told Reuters that although the mantra so far has been that there would be no “special status” for any industry group, they and other banking executives had sensed a more conciliatory tone from the government when dealing with carmaker Nissan this month - in contrast to the harder line they perceive as being taken with the financial sector.

The largely foreign-owned car industry was a strong supporter of continued membership of the European Union ahead of the June 23 vote, benefiting from unfettered access to the world’s biggest trading bloc and its standardised regulations. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said on Oct. 14, after meeting the prime minister in London, that he was confident Britain would remain a competitive place to do business.

LOBBYING BLITZ The financial industry, which pays about 60-67 billion pounds in annual taxes, could lose up to 38 billion pounds in revenue in the event of a hard Brexit, and 75,000 jobs could disappear in Britain, according to a report commissioned by industry group TheCityUK. But there are signs that a four-month lobbying blitz by some of the world’s largest banks has backfired. Officials say the banks have failed to appreciate the sheer scale of the government information-gathering exercise as it tries to determine its priorities.

The finance ministry is doing a sectorby-sector analysis of the different Brexit scenarios on revenues, employment and tax receipts to inform Britain’s negotiations with Brussels. One source complained that London financial services firms had presented a disparate list of demands and then quickly become impatient that their views were not being listened to.

There is also a sense among officials that the industry’s warnings have not panned out in the past, several banking and government sources have said.

After the financial crisis many banks threatened to move operations overseas because of a wave of higher taxes and regulation. At the turn of the century, some financial sector executives also warned the failure to

join the euro would lead to a withering in London’s role as a hub for global business.

“The government is underestimating the impact this time. This is not an idle threat,” said one banker, who has held talks with government officials. Banks including HSBC, JPMorgan and UBS have already warned that they could move thousands of jobs from Britain.

Government sources, while acknowledging the huge importance of the financial services sector to the economy, say talk of a mass exodus is unrealistic.

“The feedback from Wall Street was that any move to Paris would happen ‘over their (global banks’) dead bodies’,” said the source with knowledge of the government’s approach, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“And Frankfurt simply isn’t big enough to handle it (being a global financial hub).”

Some eurosceptic lawmakers have suggested that a “soft Brexit”, where Britain might retain some access to the single market in return for a degree of free movement of people from the bloc, would thwart the democratic will of voters.

“Bank lobbyists are going down the wrong route on Brexit. They just seem to be whining,” Conservative Party lawmaker Jacob Rees-Mogg told Reuters. “They don’t like the fact that they’ve been overruled by the people who voted.”(rtr)

HONG KONG - A Hong Kong judge warned jurors that they will have to view video filmed by former British banker Rurik Jutting of the torture and vicious killing of two Indonesian women he is accused of murdering as the trial got under way on Monday.

Jutting, who studied at Cambridge University and Winchester College, one of Britain’s most prestigious private schools, pleaded not guilty to murder on grounds of “diminished responsibility”. He was arrested two years ago after the victims’ bodies were found in his luxury high rise apartment.

The 31-year-old pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter, and to a third charge of preventing lawful burial of a body. During the jury selection, Deputy High Court Judge Michael Stuart-Moore warned potential jurors that if they were unable to cope with viewing extreme violence they should not take part.

“There is a particularly horrifying aspect of the case. One of the victims was subject to extreme cruelty and violence,” the judge said, explaining that a number of gruesome, and extreme colour photographs could be presented during the trial. “The defendant even recorded on his IPhone the torture inflicted on the first victim before she died.”

Jutting filmed a series of videos including one showing the first killing, while in other videos he talks about

his plans for the second, according to a court fact sheet. The judge said the defence and prosecution were largely in agreement over the physical evidence, but the dispute may lie in psychiatric and psychological evidence provided by the defence to determine whether it was a case of murder or manslaughter.

Looking trim and dressed in a dark blue shirt, Jutting was clean shaven with short cut hair, in stark contrast to his initial court appearances when he looked heavily overweight and wore a thick dark beard. The grisly nature of the case has cast a harsh light on the seamy side of Hong Kong, offering an insight into how some wealthy professionals binge on sex, drugs and alcohol.

PALM SPRINGS — A tour bus returning home to Los Angeles from a casino trip plowed into the back of a semi-truck on a California highway early Sunday, killing 13 people and injuring 31 others, authorities said.

A maintenance crew had slowed down traffic on Interstate 10 before the vehicles crashed just north of the desert resort town of Palm Springs, California Highway Patrol Border Division Chief Jim Abele said. The work had gone on for hours without problems, he said.

Abele said the bus carrying 44 passengers was going much faster than the truck, though a trauma surgeon said the injuries he saw indicated it was slowing down at the point of impact.

“The speed of bus was so significant that the trailer itself entered about 15 feet into the bus,” Abele told reporters. “You can see it was a substantial impact.”

It was not known if alcohol, drugs or fatigue played a role in the crash about 100 miles east of Los Angeles, but the bus was inspected in April and had no mechanical issues, Abele said. The bus driver was killed, and the truck driver received minor injuries.

The bus was coming from Red Earth Casino in the unincorporated community of Thermal and was about 35 miles into its 135-mile trip back to Los Angeles.

CHP officers had been slowing traffic to allow Southern California Edison workers to string wires across the freeway, Abele said.

Passengers told officials that most people were asleep when the crash occurred at 5:17 a.m. Abele said it appeared the 1996 bus didn’t have seat belts and likely didn’t have a black box that newer vehicles feature.

Before April, the bus also was inspected in 2014 and 2015, the CHP said. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration records show it had no crashes in the two years before Oct. 22 and had a satisfactory safety rating.

The front of the bus crumpled into the semi-truck’s trailer and debris was scattered across the key route through Southern California. Firefighters used ladders to climb into the bus’ windows to remove bodies, and tow trucks lifted the trailer to make it easier to reach the bus, whose front end was demolished.

Fourteen patients were sent to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, the area’s only trauma center. Five were admitted in critical condition but were stable and in intensive care by Sunday afternoon, said Dr. Ricard Townsend, a trauma surgeon.

CALAIS - France began clearing the sprawling “Jungle” migrant camp in Calais on Monday, with hundreds carrying suitcases queuing outside a hangar to be resettled in reception centres across the country.

The first buses departed less than an hour after immigration workers started the operation and officials predicted some 2,500 would leave on the first day.

Armed police fanned out around the warehouse and across the squalid shanty-town after a night during which small groups of migrants burned toilet blocks and hurled stones at security forces in protest at the plans to dismantle the camp.

The Socialist government says it is closing the camp, home to 6,500 migrants fleeing war and poverty, on humanitarian grounds.

It plans to relocate them to 450 centres across France.

“I hope this works out. I’m alone and I just have to study,” said Amadou Diallo from the West African nation of Guinea.

“It doesn’t matter where I end up, I don’t really care.”

French Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said that authorities had not needed to use force and that the large police presence at the camp on Monday was just for security.

Many of the migrants and refugees hail from countries like

Hamilton cuts Rosberg’s F1 lead with 50th win

AUSTIN - Lewis Hamilton celebrated his 50th Formula One victory on Sunday with a pole-to-flag U.S. Grand Prix drive that kept his title hopes alive and trimmed Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg’s lead to 26 points with three races remaining.

Rosberg, who had been chasing his 10th triumph of the season, finished second on a sunny Texan afternoon with a big crowd but little drama -- even if Hamilton spent much of it worrying about reliability.

SINGAPORE - Angelique Kerber left Singapore in a bad-tempered huff a year ago after she failed to advance from the round-robin stage of the WTA Finals, a collapse which made the German determined to make amends on her return.

On Sunday, world number one Kerber dug deep to edge out Dominika Cibulkova 7-6(5) 2-6 6-3 in her opening Red Group tie, emerging victorious from a baseline slugfest after managing to keep her emotions in check and her focus on victory.

Her smiles in the media centre were in sharp contrast to the frown she wore last year when, after needing only to win a set off the already eliminated Lucie Safarova, Kerber buckled under pressure and was bundled out of the tournament by her Czech opponent.

“Yeah, it was for sure a little bit better than the last match I played here against Safarova last year, but it’s always tough to play the first matches here,” a relieved but happy Kerber told reporters at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

“Of course the pressure is really big for me, but it’s a new situation. I’m really happy that I dealt with it well today in the first match for me.”

Last year’s meltdown prompted Kerber to overhaul her approach to high-pressure situations and she vowed to never let her emotions get the better of her on court and instead channel her energy into playing better.

The new maturity has worked wonders for the 28-year-old, who stunned Serena Williams in the Australian Open final in January, reached the Wimbledon final in July and usurped the American as world number one after claiming the U.S. Open title last month.

Mourinho humiliated on Chelsea return as Man United lose 4-0

LONDON — Jose Mourinho was humiliated on his return to Chelsea as Manchester United’s dithering defense was brutally exposed in a 4-0 loss Sunday by its ruthless hosts, who scored after only 30 seconds. Mourinho endured chants of “You’re not special anymore” from home fans at Stamford Bridge who adored the selfstyled “Special One” when he was delivering trophies across two spells in charge of the London club.

With Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante also scoring after Pedro Rodriguez’s lightning opener, this capitulation by United was reminiscent of the gloomy final days of Mourinho’s second Chelsea reign which was abruptly halted last December with his firing.

United is quickly discovering the managerial aura which saw Mourinho win trophies with FC Porto, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan is not yet close to being restored.

Antonio Conte also had much to prove against Mourinho after losses to Liverpool and Arsenal in the opening weeks of his Chelsea reign. The Italian’s players delivered before the first minute of the game had elapsed, setting the tone for a day of dominance.

The opener originated from a speculative long ball from Marcus Alonso which drifted past hesitating defenders Daley Blind and Chris Smalling and landed at Pedro’s feet. United goalkeeper David de Gea was already committed far from his goal-line at the edge of the penalty area and Pedro nipped around him and made no mistake putting the ball in the open net.

“We made an incredible defensive mistake with capitals in the first minute — then the game is different,” Mourinho said, insisting the overall performance was “very good.” The evidence on the pitch suggested otherwise. N’Golo Kante then squared to Nemanja Matic, who returned the ball for Hazard to turn Smalling before dispatching the ball into the corner of the net. Mourinho’s misery was compounded eight minutes later. Pedro, who started the rout, set up Kante to complete it. Kante waltzed through United’s brittle defense with ease, going past Smalling — who else? — before slotting beyond De Gea. After nine games, United has fewer points (14) than at this stage last year under Van Gaal (19) and sits seventh in the standings — six points behind pacesetters Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool. Chelsea climbed to fourth — the minimum target for Conte to return the team to the Champions League.

“It’s important this type of game against a team that’s very strong like Manchester United as it increases our confidence,” Conte said.

BERLIN — Davie Selke refused to celebrate despite playing a key role as Leipzig set a Bundesliga record to go second on Sunday after beating Werder Bremen 3-1.

Former Bremen striker Selke set one goal up and then sealed the win as Leipzig, the first side to remain unbeaten in its first eight Bundesliga games, closed to within two points of leader Bayern Munich.

“I’ve huge respect for Bremen.

I know a lot of people there and I’m grateful to the club,” said the 21-year-old Selke, who had been Bremen’s great hope for the future before switching between the sides last year.

It was a record transfer for the second division, with Selke costing Leipzig a reported eight million euros ($9 million), rising to 10 million euros ($11 million) with add-ons. Such is Leipzig’s strength in depth this

season — the club spent a reported 50 million euros ($55 million) in the summer — that Selke started on the bench against Bremen.

But the Germany youth international needed only three minutes after coming on with less than 20 minutes remaining to set up Naby Keita’s second goal with a perfect cross.

Keita had broken the deadlock minutes before the break. The Guinea midfielder had a fortunate bounce of the ball to get past one defender, produced a quick turn of foot to go past another, and then rounded the goalkeeper to score from a closing angle.

AUSTIN - Lewis Hamilton celebrated his 50th Formula One victory on Sunday with a pole-to-flag U.S. Grand Prix drive that kept his title hopes alive and trimmed Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg’s lead to 26 points with three races remaining.

Tour bus slams into truck on slowed-down highway, killing 13

PALM SPRINGS — A tour bus returning home to Los Angeles from a casino trip plowed into the back of a semi-truck on a California highway early Sunday, killing 13 people and injuring 31 others, authorities said.

A maintenance crew had slowed down traffic on Interstate 10 before the vehicles crashed just north of the desert resort town of Palm Springs, California Highway Patrol Border Division Chief Jim Abele said. The work had gone on for hours without problems, he said.

Abele said the bus carrying 44 passengers was going much faster than the truck, though a trauma surgeon said the injuries he saw indicated it was slowing down at the point of impact.

“The speed of bus was so significant that the trailer itself entered about 15 feet into the bus,” Abele told reporters. “You can see it was a substantial impact.”

It was not known if alcohol, drugs or fatigue played a role in the crash about 100 miles east of Los Angeles, but the bus was inspected in April and had no mechanical issues, Abele said. The bus driver was killed, and the truck driver received minor injuries.

The bus was coming from Red Earth Casino in the unincorporated community of Thermal and was about 35 miles into its 135-mile trip back to Los Angeles.

CHP officers had been slowing traffic to allow Southern California Edison workers to string wires across the freeway, Abele said.

Passengers told officials that most people were asleep when the crash occurred at 5:17 a.m. Abele said it appeared the 1996 bus didn’t have seat belts and likely didn’t have a black box that newer vehicles feature.

Before April, the bus also was inspected in 2014 and 2015, the CHP said. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration records show it had no crashes in the two years before Oct. 22 and had a satisfactory safety rating.

The front of the bus crumpled into the semi-truck’s trailer and debris was scattered across the key route through Southern California. Firefighters used ladders to climb into the bus’ windows to remove bodies, and tow trucks lifted the trailer to make it easier to reach the bus, whose front end was demolished.

Fourteen patients were sent to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, the area’s only trauma center. Five were admitted in critical condition but were stable and in intensive care by Sunday afternoon, said Dr. Ricard Townsend, a trauma surgeon.

CALAIS - France began clearing the sprawling “Jungle” migrant camp in Calais on Monday, with hundreds carrying suitcases queuing outside a hangar to be resettled in reception centres across the country.

The first buses departed less than an hour after immigration workers started the operation and officials predicted some 2,500 would leave on the first day.

Armed police fanned out around the warehouse and across the squalid shanty-town after a night during which small groups of migrants burned toilet blocks and hurled stones at security forces in protest at the plans to dismantle the camp.

The Socialist government says it is closing the camp, home to 6,500 migrants fleeing war and poverty, on humanitarian grounds.

It plans to relocate them to 450 centres across France.

“I hope this works out. I’m alone and I just have to study,” said Amadou Diallo from the West African nation of Guinea.

“It doesn’t matter where I end up, I don’t really care.”

French Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said that authorities had not needed to use force and that the large police presence at the camp on Monday was just for security.

Many of the migrants and refugees hail from countries like

Afghanistan, Syria and Eritrea and had wanted had reach Britain, which bars most of them on the basis of EU rules requiring them to seek asylum in the first European country they set foot in.

But even as the process began, the fate of about 1,300 unaccompanied child migrants remained uncertain.

Discussions are underway with British authorities over who should take in children with no family ties in Britain, the interior ministry spokesman said, adding that 200 had left for Britain last week. (rtr)

UK banks fear public, politicians set against them on Brexit

LONDON - For decades, Britain’s bankers have relied on their industry’s outsized status in the economy to find a receptive ear in government. But in the aftermath of the country’s vote to leave the European Union, the sector that generates about a tenth of national economic output is grappling with an uncomfortable new reality where economics doesn’t always trump politics.

June’s vote to quit the EU has triggered a change in leadership and tone in the British government with new Prime Minister Theresa pledging an industrial revival and to build “an economy that works for everyone” - setting nerves jangling in the City of London global financial hub.

Reuters spoke to several senior bankers from big British and international banks based in the city, including some involved in discussions with the government over Brexit.

Many said their warnings about the impact of a so-called hard Brexit - where they lose their access to the European single market - were being met with scepticism by the government and accusations from some eurosceptic lawmakers that they were undermining the message that Britain can thrive outside the EU. “It’s almost as if we were back in the 1940s and we were looking for fifth columnists all over the place because people are trying to do Britain down,” said Ronald Kent of the British Bankers’ Association (BBA).

The term “fifth column” refers to a group of people that acts secretly against the state to assist an external enemy.

The head of the BBA, Anthony Browne, said on Sunday that the public and political debate was “taking us in the wrong direction” and that big international banks were preparing to move some operations out of Britain in early 2017.

The government has pledged to execute Brexit following a vote to leave the European Union that was driven in part by a desire to curb immigration and was regarded as a repudiation of a London elite, including a banking sector still the subject of lingering public anger over its role in the financial crisis.

While finance minister Philip Hammond and his ministerial colleagues have been keen to assert the financial industry is of great importance, officials say privately the Brexit deal will have to work for the country as a whole - and means the banking industry cannot expect special treatment.

“There is no question of prioritising the financial sector, or any other sector in those talks - it’s not fair to talk in terms of special cases,” said one source with knowledge of the government’s approach to the negotiations with Brussels.

“Undoubtedly, things have changed for financial services,” said one senior executive at an international bank, who declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter, adding that there had been a “sea change” in how banks are viewed by the government.

Another banker told Reuters that although the mantra so far has been that there would be no “special status” for any industry group, they and other banking executives had sensed a more conciliatory tone from the government when dealing with carmaker Nissan this month - in contrast to the harder line they perceive as being taken with the financial sector.

The largely foreign-owned car industry was a strong supporter of continued membership of the European Union ahead of the June 23 vote, benefiting from unfettered access to the world’s biggest trading bloc and its standardised regulations. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said on Oct. 14, after meeting the prime minister in London, that he was confident Britain would remain a competitive place to do business.

David Davis, the minister in charge of Britain’s exit from the EU, said last week he was determined to secure the best possible terms of trade for the financial services sector.

LOBBYING BLITZ The financial industry, which pays about 60-67 billion pounds in annual taxes, could lose up to 38 billion pounds in revenue in the event of a hard Brexit, and 75,000 jobs could disappear in Britain, according to a report commissioned by industry group TheCityUK. But there are signs that a four-month lobbying blitz by some of the world’s largest banks has backfired. Officials say the banks have failed to appreciate the sheer scale of the government information-gathering exercise as it tries to determine its priorities.

The finance ministry is doing a sectorby-sector analysis of the different Brexit scenarios on revenues, employment and tax receipts to inform Britain’s negotiations with Brussels. One source complained that London financial services firms had presented a disparate list of demands and then quickly become impatient that their views were not being listened to.

There is also a sense among officials that the industry’s warnings have not panned out in the past, several banking and government sources have said.

After the financial crisis many banks threatened to move operations overseas because of a wave of higher taxes and regulation. At the turn of the century, some financial sector executives also warned the failure to

join the euro would lead to a withering in London’s role as a hub for global business.

“The government is underestimating the impact this time. This is not an idle threat,” said one banker, who has held talks with government officials. Banks including HSBC, JPMorgan and UBS have already warned that they could move thousands of jobs from Britain.

Government sources, while acknowledging the huge importance of the financial services sector to the economy, say talk of a mass exodus is unrealistic.

“The feedback from Wall Street was that any move to Paris would happen ‘over their (global banks’) dead bodies’,” said the source with knowledge of the government’s approach, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“And Frankfurt simply isn’t big enough to handle it (being a global financial hub).”

Some eurosceptic lawmakers have suggested that a “soft Brexit”, where Britain might retain some access to the single market in return for a degree of free movement of people from the bloc, would thwart the democratic will of voters.

“Bank lobbyists are going down the wrong route on Brexit. They just seem to be whining,” Conservative Party lawmaker Jacob Rees-Mogg told Reuters. “They don’t like the fact that they’ve been overruled by the people who voted.”(rtr)

HONG KONG - A Hong Kong judge warned jurors that they will have to view video filmed by former British banker Rurik Jutting of the torture and vicious killing of two Indonesian women he is accused of murdering as the trial got under way on Monday.

Jutting, who studied at Cambridge University and Winchester College, one of Britain’s most prestigious private schools, pleaded not guilty to murder on grounds of “diminished responsibility”. He was arrested two years ago after the victims’ bodies were found in his luxury high rise apartment.

The 31-year-old pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter, and to a third charge of preventing lawful burial of a body. During the jury selection, Deputy High Court Judge Michael Stuart-Moore warned potential jurors that if they were unable to cope with viewing extreme violence they should not take part.

“There is a particularly horrifying aspect of the case. One of the victims was subject to extreme cruelty and violence,” the judge said, explaining that a number of gruesome, and extreme colour photographs could be presented during the trial. “The defendant even recorded on his IPhone the torture inflicted on the first victim before she died.”

Jutting filmed a series of videos including one showing the first killing, while in other videos he talks about

his plans for the second, according to a court fact sheet. The judge said the defence and prosecution were largely in agreement over the physical evidence, but the dispute may lie in psychiatric and psychological evidence provided by the defence to determine whether it was a case of murder or manslaughter.

Looking trim and dressed in a dark blue shirt, Jutting was clean shaven with short cut hair, in stark contrast to his initial court appearances when he looked heavily overweight and wore a thick dark beard. The grisly nature of the case has cast a harsh light on the seamy side of Hong Kong, offering an insight into how some wealthy professionals binge on sex, drugs and alcohol.

Jutting who previously worked at Bank of America Corp in Hong Kong, was accused of murder in October 2014 after police found the bodies of Sumarti Ningsih, 23, and Seneng Mujiasih, 26, in his apartment. Both women’s throats were slit.

Ningsih, who had a son in Indonesia, was visiting Hong Kong on a tourist visa. Her mutilated body was discovered inside a suitcase on

Jutting’s balcony, while Mujiasih, a domestic helper, was found lying inside with wounds to her neck and buttocks. She was working in a bar when she met Jutting, according to the fact sheet.

Jutting was found fit to plea after undergoing psychiatric assessment at the end of 2014.

The jury has to decide if it is a case of murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence, or manslaughter, which carries a maximum of life thouh a shorter sentence can be set.

On Tuesday, the jury will watch 30 minutes of “highly graphic” video.

Clinton calls Trump a ‘sore loser’

CHARLOTTE - Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton called Donald Trump a “sore loser” on Sunday because of his refusal at their debate last week to commit to accepting the results of the Nov. 8 election.

Clinton, a former secretary of state, said Trump’s comments were more consistent with what dictators in non-democratic countries might say about their opponents.

“To say you won’t respect the results of the election, that is a direct threat to our democracy,” Clinton told a rally at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. “The peaceful transfer of power is one of the things that makes America America.”

Earlier on Sunday, Kellyanne Conway, a top Trump adviser, acknowledged that the Republican presidential candidate was lagging behind Clinton ahead of the election.

Conway said Clinton had “tremendous advantages,” including a large campaign war chest that had allowed her to spend millions on television ads.

“We are behind,” Conway said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” But she added the Trump campaign was looking to sway undecided voters not ready to support Clinton.

As the polling gap has widened, Trump has said repeatedly the election is being “rigged” against him. He has not offered evidence and numerous studies have shown that the U.S. election system, which is decentralized and run by the states, is sound.

At last week’s debate with Clinton in Las Vegas, Trump was asked if he would honor the result of the U.S. election.

U.S. diplomat says Philippines an ally, but drug killings a concern

MANILA - The most senior U.S. diplomat for Asia assured the Philippines on Monday that Washington remained its “trusted” ally and that it supported Manila’s blossoming ties with China.

Smart mouth: Chinese fish fossil sheds light on jaw evolution

WASHINGTON - A bottom-dwelling, mud-grubbing, armored fish that swam in tropical seas 423 million years ago is fundamentally changing the understanding of the evolution of an indisputably indispensable anatomical feature: the jaw. head and much of the body and boasting jaws armed with bony plates that acted as teeth to slice and dice prey.

Fish were Earth’s first vertebrates when they appeared more than half a billion years ago, but they were primitive and jawless, with sucker-like mouths. Placoderms were the first vertebrates with jaws, a pivotal evolutionary

advance that enabled them to grasp prey, but they had no teeth.

Teeth appeared for the first time in later fish.

Qilinyu had three bones, the dentary, maxilla and premaxilla, that characterize the modern vertebrate jaw seen in bony fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, though they are absent in the cartilaginous sharks

and rays.

Scientists long viewed placoderms as a fascinating evolutionary dead-end. But the fossils of Qilinyu and another placoderm called Entelognathus that also possessed the three bones indicate that the elements of the modern jaw first appeared in placoderms.

The maxilla and premaxilla are bones of the upper jaw. The dentary is a bone of the lower jaw.

It appears they evolved from the bony plates that placoderms

used to sheer flesh in lieu of teeth, said paleontologist Per Ahlberg of Sweden’s University of Uppsala, who helped lead the study published in the journal Science.

“In us, the lower jaw is made entirely from the dentary. Most of the upper jaw is composed from the maxilla, but the bit that carries the incisor teeth is the premaxilla,” Ahlberg said.

The findings contradict the long-held notion that the modern jaw architecture evolved later, in the earliest bony fish. (rtr)

Europe’s Mars probe destroyed after plunging to surface FRANKFURT - Images taken by a NASA Mars orbiter indicate that a missing European space probe was destroyed on impact after plummeting to the surface of the Red Planet from a height of 2-4 km (1.2 to 2.5 miles), the European Space Agency said on Friday.

The disc-shaped, 577-kg (1,272 lb) Schiaparelli probe, part of the RussianEuropean ExoMars programme to search for evidence of life on Mars, descended on Wednesday to test technologies for a rover that scientists hope to send to the surface of the planet in 2020.

But contact with the vehicle was lost around 50 seconds before the expected landing time, leaving its fate uncertain until the NASA images were received.

“Schiaparelli reached the ground with a velocity that was much higher than it should have been, several hundred kilometres per hour, and was then unfortunately destroyed by the impact,” ExoMars Flight Director Michel Denis told Reuters TV. Tapeworms endemic in Bali can cause cysticercosis disease

Scientists said on Thursday they unearthed in China’s Yunnan province fossils of a primordial fish called Qilinyu rostrata that was about 12 inches (30 cm) long and possessed the telltale bones present in modern vertebrate jaws including in people.

The U.S. space agency’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has been circling the planet for about 10 years, took low-resolution pictures that show a bright spot that ESA believes is the 12metre parachute that Schiaparelli used to slow down. (http://bit.ly/2efEs3u) They also show a fuzzy dark patch, around 15 by 40 metres in size, about 1 km north of the parachute, which scientists interpret as having been created by the impact of the lander following a longer-thanplanned free fall.

ESA said it was possible that Schiaparelli’s landing was accompanied by an explosion, as its thrusters’ fuel tanks were probably still full.

The primary part of the ExoMars mission has, however, been a success so far, as the Schiaparelli lander’s mothership has been brought into orbit around Mars, from where it will try to sniff out methane and other gases that might indicate the presence of life. DENPASAR - There are several regions in Indonesia becoming endemic to tapeworm (Taenia solium), namely; Bali, Papua, Samosir (North Sumatera) and Sulawesi. The highest number of people suffering from tapeworm is found in Bali -particularly the region of Kubu, Karangasem.

On Sunday (Oct. 23), Made Sudarmaja, a parasitologist from the Medical Faculty of Udayana University, in his presentation at the Asia Pacific Society for Medical Mycology Congress in conjunction with national symposium on tropical skin infection entitled ‘Medical Mycology in Asia Pacific: Towards on Health’ said that tapeworms can cause cysticercosis.

Data from the World Health Organization shows that 50,000 people have died from cysticercosis disease.

Cases of this disease are still found in Bali and Papua. In Bali, the number of cases continues to increase because in the past the matter of tapeworm infection was not considered a serious problem and not complained about but now since people want to have a good performance and smooth skin, more cases are being reported as people complain.

In Kubu subdistrict, Karangasem, the tapeworm case is the highest because people rarely have toilet while they defecate outside. Then, pigs are let roam around while they are the vector of tapeworm causing cysticercosis disease.

Tapeworm eggs ingested will hatch in the duodenum resulting in hexacant embryo.

This can penetrate the duodenal wall and come into blood circulation. Symptom of this disease shows no complaint. If any pain suffered by patients, it is only a mild pain, so that it is not considered serious.

Transmission of this disease can be through traveling, refugees and migration.

Cysticercosis can cause vision disorder, severe headaches, seizures, epilepsy and hydrocephalus. (may)

‘Human robot’ of Karangasem visited by some experts

DO you still remember 34 year old I Wayan Sumardana alias Tawan? ”This father of three, whose left hand is paralyzed, had shaken media publications a few months ago because of with his ability to design a robot to help him move his crippled hand allowing him to use it to work.

When met at his welding workshop on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 22), he said he was quite busy working and serving people in need of welding services. He has to work overtime because his contract for the 150 square meters of contracted land that he uses for his welding workshop is reaching its end.

Tawan said that a number of experts, especially from overseas, often visit him. Among them, one from the Netherlands named Dave Hakken as well as an expert from Germany. The engineer from Germany encouraged Sumardana to design a machine to be used to melt and produce waste into useful products, such as household appliances. Tawan who is from Tauman hamlet, Nyuhtebel village, Karangasem, said he was interested in designing it. Such machine is very necessary in Karangasem because plastic waste overflows and pollutes the environment.

“The expert from Germany saw a lot of plastic waste materials around my shack. Our whole family are collectors of plastic bottles. My wife accommodates the plastic waste from scavengers in the area. On average, they are elderly people and have no other means of earning a living. In order to be able to eat, they come and bring plastic wasteoften less than a kilogram. Nevertheless, we still give them enough money for meal a day” he said.

Unfortunately, he said that the marketing of plastic waste, like bottles and drink cups is now declining. Allegedly

this is due to the weakening global economy. “Three days ago, a customer from Surabaya took a container of plastic waste but he has not paid yet.

The container is worth around IDR 4 million. When we ask our fellow collectors, they are in the same boat”, he said accompanied by his wife and three children.

Tawan graduated from a vocational school in Denpasar. Six years ago, his left hand became paralyzed. Apparently this was due to a neurotic disorder that struck him one day as he was departing for work to Denpasar. He fell and was almost crushed under a truck in the area of Ulakan.

Because he has expertise in the field of electronics, with the help of a used laptop that had been repaired, he searched for information on the internet. He then designed a tool to move his crippled hand in the form of a robot responding to cerebral signals that drive the crippled hand. The robot was successful, and allowed him to ride a motorcycle and serve his welding orders from Pesedahan, Sengkidu and surrounding villages. Because he works using a robot hand, people in his village are surprised by his ability and then spread by word of mouth. Tawan then caused a commotion after his story was published in the newspaper. Many people came to see him directly. Not only pupils, students and lecturers in Bali, but also people from outside Bali and overseas including from Japan,

as well as people from a number of electronic companies.

A number of companies have invited Sumardana to join them. However, he has refused these offers. He considered himself to still be a layman compared to large industries. For now he is focusing on treatment for his hand, hoping that it will be able to function as I did before.

While he was getting treatment in Denpasar one day, and his wife was out of the shack, a visitor touched the electronic arm and caused damage to it. Allegedly it happened due to short circuit, particularly in the sensor of for the brain waves. The robot skeleton was about to be displayed in a museum.

Meanwhile, the prototype of iron peg legs formerly used by an amputated-leg man from Abian Bada, Wayan Kari, was already brought to the Netherlands.

Tawan wanted to prevent it from being shipped because it needs to be repaired.

But the foreigner forced to bring along with him as it is considered unique. “I have made another prosthetic leg for Mr. Wayan Kari as a replacement” said Tawan.

Some foreign experts still have sympathy for him until now. They give motivation and lend a hand including giving knowledge.

Among his hustles and overtime to work on the orders, the man known to be diligent and helpful to the disabled and elderly residents in his home village is designing a new working tool.

However, this one is not using cerebral signals but muscle sensors. “I also repaired the damaged robot-assisted tool for my left hand. I worry that in the long term it is not safe for my nerves,” he said.

The robot-assisted tool for his left hand made of iron is finished, he just needs to combine it with a number of components, including the main components in the form of cerebral sensor.

Tawan remains as he always was and still lives in a shack on contracted land on the roadside that leads to Tenganan Pageringsingan tourist attraction, approximately 500 meters from Candidasa tourist attraction. Other than running a plastic waste business, he also maintains chicken to support the family.

The money donated by the officials has been used to pay his debts and the rest is being saved at the local village LPD. Tawan said that when he fell ill and his left hand paralyzed, automatically his melding business went bankrupt.

Six laborers that formerly helped him have gone. Thus, he was really out of business.

In the meantime, he had a debt for the cost of hospitalization and subsequent treatments. Previously Tawan was successful. In addition to running welding workshop, he also raised chicken. His assets could have reached billions of rupiahs. Although his life is now down to zero, he still cares for others. Ahead of last Galungan feast day, said the staff of Public Relations and Protocol of Karangasem, Nengah Sardana, a resident of Pesedahan—who also keeps motivating him—Tawan still visits the elderly living an apprehensive life by lending a hand. The tourism extension with Cenkblong puppet medium is expected to grow tourism awareness of the community.

With the tourism extension, people are expected to under-

stand about the importance of tourism development and foster tourism awareness in order to create favorable conditions in Denpasar. This can be achieved by implementing seven charms (sapta pesona) consisting of safe, orderly, clean, cool, beautiful, friendly and memorable destination that are positive for visiting travelers, said Gunawan.

Gunawan said that tourism extension this year is held at Penatih village with the consideration that this village will be developed into a tourism village in Denpasar. To that end, it needs to be disseminated to the public so that they can support and play an active role in the development of Penatih tourism village and tourism development in Denpasar. To further motivate the presence of people, make it more interesting and cause more people to understand about the topic, this year’s extension is implemented through Cenkblong puppet show.

Economy of Kemenuh comes up after Bali bombing

GIANYAR — In the 1980s, Kemenuh village was known to be a village rich in culture. The culture was implemented in the art creativity through household craft. At that time, many markets, galleries and art shops were scattered at Kemenuh.

“After that, almost 80 percent of our residents are engaged in handicrafts,” said headman of Kemenuh, I Dewa Nyoman Neka, recently. With such craft activities, residents could accommodate labor force and it is economically meaningful for the life of Kemenuh village.

Unfortunately, after the first and second Bali bombing, people’s businesses went bankrupt. “Probably due to market share and other conditions of the world’s economy, our residents switched professions from craftsmen to farm laborers, handyman and other service provider,” he said when met at wantilan hall of Tangkulak Kaja.

Approximately 60 percent of people switched their profession.

Through the village administra-

tion, the Kemenuh began to be re-arranged. The emergence of national program for community empowerment (PNPM) to rural areas began to be felt. “With the program, we organize our public life with the empowerment and infrastructure development,” he explained.

His rural government explored the potential through this program.

The 60 percent of people having switched profession currently remains about 40 percent. The remaining returned to pursue craft making activities to support their economy. “We will try again to the forty percent,” he hoped. Former craft labors currently have opened independent craft businesses at their home.

In 2015, Kemenuh village got rural integrated development (gerbang sadu) program from provincial government amounting to IDR 1 billion and IDR 20 million is utilized for village-owned enterprise (BUMDes). Through savings and loan with interest rate of 0.5 percent, Kemenuh village helped 440 poor families in accessing capital.

Before being able to access the capital, the poor is provided with productive training. “They are expected to be independent at the household with the provision of training conditioned through PP and family planning, cake making and oblation making because many of our residents are selling oblations with the budget allocation through APBDes sourcing from village funds,” he said.

Having been considered to have skill, they are given capital. Currently, there are people running business by cultivating screwpine for the complement of oblation at one of Tegenungan hamlet and some others oblation making services, et cetera.

With a population of 9,786 people spreading over 11 hamlets and six customary villages, the district government through micro business license with the authority given to subdistrict head has provided access to people’s business credit. “At least, the goal of central, local and village government to provide empowerment will have an impact in the change of the economy,” he said. The latest film in the long-running Madea series racked up $27.6 million. Comedian Chris Rock may be entitled to a percentage of the gross. Creator Tyler Perry was inspired to take his pistol-packing grandma trick-or-treating after Rock’s comedian character in 2014’s “Top Five” joked that his latest movie, a passion project about a slave revolt, was going head-to-head at the box office with “Boo! A Madea Halloween.” What was once intended as satire eventually became a seasonally appropriate reality.

“This isn’t the end of the series, it’s just the beginning,” said Jeff Bock, box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations, who noted that Perry also scored with 2013’s “A Madea Christmas.” “There are so many holidays left.

There’s Easter, St. Patrick’s Day, and he hasn’t even done a Thanksgiving one yet.”

Don’t look for “Boo!” to end up in the Oscar race or on many reviewers’ “ten best” lists, but the Halloween comedy is a hit for distributor Lionsgate and reaffirms Perry’s star power. Despite being routinely derided by critics, the film series has an extremely loyal fan base.

Collectively they’ve earned nearly $380 million, enjoying capacious profit margins given that most of the movies cost less than a Papa John’s Super Bowl spot to produce. The latest Madea cost $20 million to make, and attracted a more diverse crowd. Typically the films have an audience that’s between 80% and 90% AfricanAmerican, but this installment’s crowd was only 60% African-American, with the rest of ticket buyers made up largely of Caucasians and Hispanic movie-goers.

“The film crossed over and it expanded the audience,” said David Spitz, co-president of domestic distribution at Lionsgate. “Madea is such a beloved character and the timing helped. There are not many comedies in the marketplace right now and Halloween is right around the corner.” (rtr)

Plane on French anti-smuggling mission crashes in Malta

VALLETTA - A light aircraft conducting a French surveillance mission over the Mediterranean crashed on take-off in Malta on Monday, killing all five people on board, Maltese authorities said.

The twin-prop Fairchild Metroliner crashed near the runway of the island’s main airport at about 7:20 a.m. (0520 GMT), sending smoke billowing into the sky, closing Malta International Airport for several hours in what was the country’s worst peacetime air incident. The flight was part of a customs operation the French have been conducting for the last five months, tracking human trafficking and drugs smuggling, the Maltese government said.

Airport officials said the plane had been heading for Misrata in Libya.

It was a “reconnaissance aircraft ... carrying out surveillance operations over the Mediterranean for the defence ministry,” French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said.

On board were three defence officials and two private contractors, all French, Le Drian said. All their remains were found, the Maltese government

said, adding that inquiries were under way to determine what had happened.

“Official information, footage and eyewitnesses ... clearly indicate that there was no explosion prior to impact,” the government said.

The flight was registered as local with Malta Air Traffic Services and was due to return to Malta within hours without landing in any other countries, the government said.

Airport sources initially said the plane was believed to be carrying officials from European Union border agency Frontex, but the organisation later said none of its staff were involved. The plane was registered in the United States and was leased to Luxembourg-based CAE Aviation.
