More than 240,000 people seek James Gunn re-hire SAN DIEGO - More than 240,000 people have signed a petition for Disney to rehire “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise director James Gunn, who also garnered celebrity support just days after he was axed over a series of offensive tweets. “I’m smart enough to know this most likely won’t change anything but hopefully, this could get Disney to realize the mistake they made and not do it again in the future,” said a person named Chandler Edwards, who launched the petition on Change.org. “I agree on the point that if people say a bunch of stupid shit while working for a studio, the studio has full right to fire him over the possible controversy. “This situation is very different, though, as he made these jokes years before he was working for Disney and also the fact that they were jokes.” Edwards argued that if Gunn was being punished by being removed from the third installment in the popular series, “you have to do it for all the other directors who have said some crappy joke sometime in their life, which is all of them.” The tweets, mainly from 2008 and 2011, joked about taboo topics such as rape and pedophilia. Gunn, 51, has been an outspoken

critic of President Donald Trump and has drawn the ire of conservative critics, who went back through his timeline and dug up the tweets. “Guardians” star Dave Bautista defended Gunn on Twitter. “What will you do when the #cybernazis attack you? Who will stand by you? Who will cowardly distance themselves from you? Who will punish you for horrible JOKES in the past instead of defending you for INSPIRING millions? MILLIONS!!!” he wrote. After the offensive tweets resurfaced late Thursday, Gunn used the micro-blogging platform to say “I’ve developed as a person, so has my work and my humor” after early years as a “provocateur.” Gunn, who has deleted his account, described himself as a “very, very different” person than when he wrote the tweets, now focusing on love rather than anger. Gunn directed both “Guardians of the Galaxy” films. The third film in the series is due out in 2020. Gunn was fired after Disney television network ABC axed Roseanne Barr from the sitcom “Roseanne” for a racist tweet about former White House aide Valerie Jarrett. WASHINGTON - Adult film star Stormy Daniels, who is battling President Donald Trump in court over their alleged sexual encounter a decade ago, and her husband plan to divorce, her lawyer announced Monday.

Daniels, 39, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, married Glendon Crain, 41, in 2010. Crain is a heavy metal musician and pornographic movie actor, featuring in adult films under the name Brendon Miller. Daniels, who was married twice previously, gave birth to a daughter in 2011. “My client Stormy Daniels and her husband Glen have decided to end their marriage,” lawyer Michael Avenatti said in a statement on Twitter.

“A petition for divorce was filed last week, the accuracy of which is vehemently disputed,” Daniel’s attorney added. “Stormy’s daughter remains her number one priority,” Avenatti said. “She kindly asks for privacy for the sake of her family.” Daniels is suing Trump to invalidate a non-disclosure agreement that prevents her from discussing their alleged 2006 sexual encounter. “I don’t need or want privacy.

I want truth. And it will come out. I’m not afraid,” Daniels wrote. Trump’s personal attorney, Michael Cohen, paid Daniels $130,000 just days before the 2016 presidential election in exchange for her silence. Daniels told CBS’s “60 Minutes” in March that she had unprotected sex with Trump once, and was threatened by a man in a parking lot in Las Vegas when she sought to sell her story five years later. Wave After Wave of Garbage Hits the Dominican Republic

Come for the beaches, say tourism ads for the Dominican Republic. But it has some beaches you might want to skip right now. The Caribbean nation is known for sapphire seas and ivory beaches, but it is grappling with waves of garbage washing up on its shores, a vivid reminder of the presence of thousands of tons of plastic in the world’s oceans. Those piles, most notably the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch,” are usually far from human settlements, to say nothing of resort destinations. But instead of visitors relaxing on Montesinos Beach in the capital, Santo Domingo, there has been

an altogether different scene, one unlikely to wind up on a postcard: Hundreds of city workers and volunteers who have been waging an uphill battle against wave after wave of sludgy garbage. Images have shown teams using pikes, shovels and excavators to lift the garbage, only to be met with new waves carrying even more. Sixty tons of garbage have been collected on the beach since last week, Reuters reported. The haul included plastic bottles and Styrofoam takeout boxes, Parley

for the Oceans, an organization that works to reduce plastic waste in the world’s oceans, said in a statement. The images are shocking, but perhaps not for people who live in the Dominican Republic. “It happens pretty much all the time if there is a strong rainfall or a storm,” said Cyrill Gutsch, the founder of Parley for the Oceans, in a telephone interview. The phenomenon is not confined to the Dominican Republic, he said, and can be seen in many developing nations with a coastline. “Everybody uses the rivers and the beaches as dump sites.” What is happening in the Do-

minican Republic is only a small symptom of the larger global problem, Mr. Gutsch said. Plastic dumped in and near rivers washes into the ocean, and only a small percentage bounces back onto shore. The majority makes it to the high seas. Mr. Gutsch said that recycling was a short-term solution and amounted to only a bandage. Parley for the Oceans advocates phasing out single-use plastic altogether. Great fire burns villas and temple of residents at Labuan Sait

MANGUPURA - A great fire incident occurred on Monday (Jul. 23) in the Labuan Sait area, Pecatu village, South Kuta. The fire burned some buildings of Blue Point Villa and Ocean One Villa. In addition, the temple belonging to local residents near the location was also on fire. Chief of South Kuta Police, Nengah Patrem, when met at the scene mentioned the fire began to emerge from the building owned by Ocean One Villa. Due to strong winds, the fire spread to Blue Point Villa next to it. As a result,

dozens of buildings in Blue Point Villa were on fire within an hour. “As the initial allegation, the fire emerged from the welding hose because the Ocean One Villa is currently still under project,” he said. He said that currently the construction project of Ocean One Villa almost reaches 90 percent of completion. However, the wind condition at that time was not too strong. As a result, the fire only burned one unit of building. To prevent luxury facilities, prison house searched TABANAN - Following up the warrant of the Director General of Corrections, the Tabanan Prison held a search to living rooms in order to check and clean up if there are facilities violating the applicable provisions. ing rooms of both male and female blocks as well as public facilities in the correctional institution. Military making sure that Local wisdom is not be eroded by globalization

Hyperloop test pod sets speed record

CALIFORNIA - A competition helping to drive development of the futuristic hyperloop transport system has been won by engineering students from Munich. The hyperloop idea involves passengers in pods travelling at very high speeds down sealed tunnels. The team’s pod hit 457km/h (290mph) on a 1.2km (0.75 mile) test track. Run by the SpaceX aerospace company, the competition aims to refine the technologies that could underpin the superfast transport system. The win is the third in a row for the Technical University of Munich team. Transport transformation

The competition saw student teams from universities around the world gather in California to put their prototype pods through their paces. The idea for hyperloop, which would see pods speed through a sealed tunnel to reduce friction or air resistance, has been around for decades and was fleshed out by technology entrepreneur Elon Musk in 2012. He suggested that pods could travel along the system’s tunnels at speeds in excess of 1,000km/h. Critics have voiced concerns about the potential cost of building a large hyperloop and whether its technical demands can be met. Mr Musk’s SpaceX company has run a series of competitions to drive development of the concept. In the latest round of the competition, the Munich team,

In a change from earlier competitions, all the pods being tested this time had to be self-propelled. Previously, the pods could rely on a SpaceX-built “pusher” vehicle that helped them travel down the test tube. Bug-sized robot competitors to swarm DARPA’s ‘Robot Olympics’

Robots that measure just a fraction of an inch in length could be used in search-and-rescue operations after national disasters, or to inspect hazardous environments.

PICTURE the Olympic Games — except instead of human athletes, the competitors are all insectsized robots. That’s the scenario proposed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), representatives said in a statement. The group is seeking innovative designs for robots that measure just a fraction of an inch, and the tiny bots will compete against each other in a series of contests of strength, speed and agility — similar to those that try the limits of human achievement in the Olympics. The robots would be developed for a new DARPA program called Short-Range Independent Microrobotic Platforms (SHRIMP). Under SHRIMP, the bug-sized bots will be tested for deploying in locations that are difficult for people

to navigate, or are dangerous or inaccessible to humans, according to the statement. SHRIMP will research and develop novel solutions for powering small robots, and will investigate new materials that could improve the robots’ performance without significantly increasing their size or heft. And to test how well the robots can perform, SHRIMP will put them through their paces in “an Olympic-style evaluation,” with performances demonstrating their maneuverability, dexterity and mobility, according to the statement. One of the “sports” categories for the bots will test untethered actuator-power systems, showing how high and how far the robot can jump, how much weight they can lift, how far they can throw objects and how they perform in a

tug of war. The other category is for complete robot designs: The tiny bots will be evaluated on rock piling, climbing a vertical surface, navigating an obstacle course, and performing in a biathlon. Robots competing in DARPA’s robo-lympics may be small, but their minuscule size will allow them to perform important tasks that are off-limits to larger robots. And discoveries that make the tiny robots more powerful and agile could be applied to other areas where the use of robotics is currently constrained by their size or bulkiness — “from prosthetics to optical steering,” Ronald Polcawich, a DARPA program manager in the Microsystems Technology Office, said in the statement. DENPASAR — The Indonesian army has their attention on local wisdom in the territory of Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) because it is part of a cultural heritage that must be preserved. On that account, expert staff of social and cultural affairs for the Army Chief of Staff was specifically assigned to collect data about the local wisdom owned by the people of Bali. This data compiling is aimed at preventing local wisdom from becoming eroded by modernization and globalization. Data collection was held in the 163/ Wirasatya Military Resort Command Headquarters in Denpasar. Spokesperson of the 163/Wirasatya Military Resort Command, Ida Bagus Diana Sukertia, said the data collection team was led by Rochiman and received by Commander of 163/Wirasatya Military Resort, A.M. Suharyadi. Before the Hindu figures, Balinese customary figures and Provincial Government of Bali representatives, Rochiman explained that his coming to Bali is for the purpose of collecting data on the study of local wisdom. The army is conducting such data collection through several working groups throughout Indonesia. Rochiman added that there is wealth of local wisdom in Indonesia from Sabang to Merauke that needs to be preserved and developed so as not to disappear. “Working Group V led by Brig. Gen Rochiman is assigned to Bali as a a very unique region with rich local wisdom”, he said. The data obtained will be the subject of study and follow up and used as input for the government to create standard regulations

aimed at maintaining local wisdom throughout the archipelago. Associated with the territorial command who interact extensively with the local community according to its function. Moreover, he encouraged all the institutions including the Indonesian Military (TNI) to support all local wisdom conservation efforts including those of the highly diverse and unique Balinese people. “The results of the discussion about the data collection about local wisdom will be followed up by a Forum Group Discussion (FGD) in Jakarta that will present traditional leaders as speakers and the Army and the Director General of Culture in order to reach a common vision of local wisdom in Indonesia. There is something attractive on this legislative candidacy. A couple is determined to go forward. Departing from the same party, it will seize the votes in the same electoral district. When the registration of the legislative prospective candidate ended on July 17, the atmosphere at the office of the Klungkung Electoral Commission located on Jalan Gadjah Mada looked different from ever before. It was much more crowded. Approaching the evening, a number of people came. They put on cohesive clothing equipped with attribute of each political party. They handed over a stack of files. When observed further, apparently it is a married couple named Marsudi Bambang Wijanarko and Ida Rosida. They are residents of Lebah neighborhood Semarapura Kangin village who apply on behalf of the National Mandate Party (PAN). When met directly in their residence on Sunday (Jul. 22), Marsudi looked plain. Friendly impression could be seen from his face. He took a carpet and invited to sit down. Azka Subhan DENPASAR - After experiencing stagnation over the past year, the residential property sector (both primary and secondary market) in Bali began to indicate a recovery. This is reflected in the results of the primary residential property price survey (SHPR) by the Bali Representative Office of Bank Indonesia in the second quarter of 2018. Deputy Head of the Bank Indonesia for Bali Representative Office, Azka Subhan A, explained the primary residential property price index (IHPR) in the second quarter of 2018 was recorded at 185.44, higher than the previous quarter reaching 185.23. Based on the type of house, the increase mainly occurred in the house of small type. Meanwhile, the medium and large houses still do not indicate an increase. Indications of the acceleration also occurred in the secondary residential property market. The growth in secondary housing prices in Denpasar and surrounding areas experienced an increase from an average of 0.28 percent (yoy) in the previous quarter to 0.74 percent (yoy) in the second quarter of 2018. The 54-year-old said she then noticed three other nearby animals, and as she began backing away, they attacked. “There was blood everywhere on the ground. I just looked at my wounds and ‘Oh my God’,” she told Channel Seven television late Monday from her hospital bed. “I looked down and thought ‘Oh my God, am I going to die?, are they going to get me down?’.” Rundle, who will undergo reconstructive surgery to graft skin to her body, said she screamed for 10 minutes before co-workers came to her aid. “They just wouldn’t let go. I think once they had the taste they just didn’t let go,” she said of the feral dogs, which are native to Australia. A relative of the woman added: “She had bites everywhere but her head.” East Pilbara shire president Lynne Craigie said she had never seen a dingo attack like it in her 20 years living in the region.

“Obviously any animal that’s hungry is going to be aggressive but I was very surprised to hear there were three of them sort of attacking in a pack,” she told broadcaster ABC. Dingo attacks are rare, with just a handful of incidents reported in recent years. In 2012 a German man was savaged while camping on Fraser island in Queensland state, while a three-year-old and a South Korean woman were bitten in separate incidents on the popular tourist destination known for its dingo population the year before. A nine-year-old boy was killed by wild dogs there in 2001. The most prominent dingo case involved baby Azaria Chamberlain who was snatched by one in 1980. Chamberlain’s mother spent three years in jail convicted of her murder, but was released in 1986 when some of her daughter’s clothing was recovered by chance near a dingo lair. She fought for decades to clear her name in a sensational case which spawned a Meryl Streep film, with a coroner finally ruling in 2012 that a wild dog took the child. (afp)

‘Unprecedented’ Japan heatwave kills 65 in one week TOKYO - An “unprecedented” heatwave in Japan has killed at least 65 people in one week, government officials said Tuesday, with the weather agency now classifying the record-breaking weather as a “natural disaster.” In the week to Sunday at least 65 people died of heat stroke while 22,647 people were hospitalised, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said in a statement. Both figures are “the worstever for any week during summer” since the agency began recording fatalities resulting from heat stroke in July 2008, an agency spokesman told AFP. TOKYO - Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe warned the U.S. on Friday that higher tariffs on auto imports would backfire and harm not only America’s jobs and economy but also devastate the global economy. Abe told a news conference marking the end of a Diet session that Japan’s auto and auto parts industry has never threatened America’s national security and it never will. Abe said he will keep explaining that to Trump. Trump has ordered the U.S. government to investigate if higher tariffs on foreign-made vehicles and auto parts are justified on national security grounds. Japan’s auto industry has for decades invested billions of dollars in U.S. plants that employ hundreds of thousands of workers. Japanese automakers produce twice as many vehicles in the U.S. as they export from Japan, Abe said. “Japan provides good jobs and contributes greatly to America’s

economy,” Abe said. “If restriction measures were imposed, such employment will be lost, and not only will it have a negative impact on the U.S. economy but also cause tremendous damage to the world economy.” Abe’s government last month sent a report to the U.S. Department of Commerce, warning against any trade restrictions. In that report, Japan’s government said any trade restrictions, if imposed, would increase costs for U.S. consumers and cause many Americans to lose jobs. It said the measures would put a break on global trade, disrupt the market and put global free trade “at great risk.”

Up to 624,000 people could lose their jobs in the U.S. if a 25 percent tariff was levied on automobiles and auto parts and other countries retaliated. Abe said he has repeatedly reminded Trump of Japanese auto makers’ contribution to his country. “Exchanges of trade restriction measures will benefit nobody,” Abe said. “While explaining these points, we will persistently work hard to avoid trade restriction measures.” Already hit by increased U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs, Japan has told the World Trade Organization it may levy retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods totaling about 50 billion yen ($450 million) a year. Survey finds eurozone economy cools as new orders weaken

LONDON - A closely watched survey is showing that economic growth across the 19-country eurozone moderated at the start of the third quarter. Financial information firm IHS Markit said Tuesday that its purchasing managers index — a broad gauge of business activity — for the eurozone eased to 54.3 in July from 54.9 in June. Though still above the 50 mark that means the economy continues to grow, the firm said weakened new order inflows and reduced business expectations of future activity fostered a downbeat picture. The July reading, if sustained over the following two months, indicates quarterly economic growth of 0.4 percent, down from the anticipated 0.5 percent in the second quarter. Viral post inflames public anger in China vaccine scandal

BEIJING - China’s newest product safety scare burst onto the public consciousness when an obscure essay alleging corruption in the pharmaceutical industry become an internet sensation, exposing widespread anger and distrust after a string of scandals. The furore over alleged shady dealings by a major vaccine producer has shattered already fragile trust in regulators and illustrated the rising frustrations of China’s increasingly sophisticated consumers. News that pharmaceutical company Changchun Changsheng Biotechnology had fabricated records and been forced to stop manufacturing rabies vaccines was first reported more than a week ago. But it exploded on social media over the weekend, fuelled by a viral essay alleging decades of malfeasance by the company including the bribery of officials to allow low-quality products onto the market. The origin and veracity of the mysterious post remains unverified, but it touched off a cat-and-mouse game as China’s aggressive censors scrambled to prevent its dissemination. However the damage was done. Millions of angry users shared the essay and other information on product-safety problems in a rare public airing of a

touchy national issue. The China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) said last week the problematic rabies vaccine had not left Changsheng’s factory, but the company admitted it had shipped a separate sub-standard vaccine. That vaccine for diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus (DPT) was found by regulators to fail quality standards -- but the company revealed that it sold 250,000 doses to Shandong province last year. As the pressure mounted, further revelations have emerged. Authorities in the northern province of Hebei announced Monday that nearly 150,000 people had received sub-standard DPT vaccines made by another firm, Wuhan Institute of Biological Products. The problems have rekindled already deep fears over domestically made medicines and driven worried parents online to swap information on obtaining imported vaccines. “I don’t trust the vaccines here anymore,” a woman who gave only her surname Zhou told AFP as she waited with her young daughter at a pediatric clinic in Beijing on Tuesday. Zhou said she was willing to pay for imported products rather than accept those offered for free by the government. Hong Kong clinics said they have seen a surge in demand for children’s vaccines. Death toll hits 50 from Greek wildfires ATHENS - Fifty people have died and 170 have been injured in wildfires ravaging woodland and villages in the Athens region, as Greek authorities rush to evacuate residents and tourists stranded on beaches along the coast on Tuesday. The death toll soared with a Red Cross official reporting the discovery of 26 bodies in the courtyard of a villa at the seaside resort of Mati. The bodies were entwined and severely burnt, an AFP photographer at the scene said. They appeared to have been caught by the flames trying to reach the sea. The land swap plan has raised concerns among conservation groups because of the potential for new conflicts with communities and fears companies might be given new land even before they’ve completed restoration of the degraded swampland forests. It’s also unpopular with plantation operators because new areas they’re allocated could be distant from their factories and mills. Forestry Ministry officials didn’t answer calls. The Anti-Forestry Mafia Coalition, which overlaid government maps of the land swap areas with Indonesia’s forest cover map to arrive at the 40 percent figure, said any new land handed out should only come from areas previously approved for industrial forestry plantations. It also criticized lack of a legally binding requirement to ensure companies restore degraded lands at their own expense before getting new allocations. “Without this provision, the companies can simply walk away from the disaster they’ve created,” the coalition of 14 groups said in a statement. “Restoration may never take place and abandoned areas may be vulnerable to catastrophic fires for years to come.” A 2017 study by a University of Queensland environmental scientist estimated it would cost at least $4.6 billion to re-wet just the 2 million hectares of peatland designated as a priority for restoration by the government. Degraded peatland makes up nearly a quarter of Kalimantan — the Indonesian part of Borneo — and Sumatra. Aside from forestry plantations, a vast area of peatland was drained in Kalimantan for rice production in the 1990s but abandoned by 1999 due to low productivity, according to the University of Queensland research. Indonesian teen raped by her brother jailed for abortion JAKARTA — A 15-year-old Indonesian girl who was raped by her brother has been sentenced to six months in prison for having an abortion, police said Sunday. Both the girl and her 18-year-old brother were convicted Thursday by the District Court of Muara Bulian in Batanghari district in Jambi province, said Singgih Hermawan, deputy chief of the local police.

The brother received a two-year prison sentence for having sex with a minor, Hermawan said. Abortion is illegal in Indonesia, but is allowed in cases of rape, especially if the woman’s life is at risk. However, the abortion must take place within 1 1/2 months of becoming pregnant and be performed by professionals. The girl had her abortion when she was

six months’ pregnant, according to a court official. Her mother is facing charges for aiding the abortion. She said she helped her daughter out of fear of being shamed by neighbors. It was revealed in court that the girl had been raped eight times since September. In May, residents discovered a headless fetus near a palm oil plantation. Police made the arrests in June.

The defendants and their lawyers accepted the sentences, which also ruled that the girl and her brother must undergo rehabilitation at the Institute for Special Education of Children. It was not clear whether the prosecutors, who had demanded a one-year prison sentence for the girl and seven years for her brother, would appeal the sentences. (ap)

LOS ANGELES - Six-time Olympic gold medallist Ryan Lochte has been suspended 14 months for an anti-doping violation after he received an intravenous infusion, the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) announced on Monday. While USADA said Lochte was not using a banned substance, athletes can typically only receive IVs as part of hospital treatment or through an exemption. “I wasn’t taking anything illegal. Everything was legal. You can get it at CVS, Walgreens, but there are rules, and you have to obey them,” a “devastated” Lochte told a press conference in South Florida. The 33-year-old American posted a picture of himself getting the IV on social media in May which caused USADA to open an investigation, one that Lochte “fully cooperated” with according to officials. “Lochte received an intravenous infusion of permitted substances at an infusion clinic in a volume greater than 100 mL in a 12-hour period without a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE),” USADA said in a statement, adding the swimmer had accepted his suspension. Lochte’s ban was backdated to May 24, the date he received the treatment that he said was taken as a precaution after his wife and son fell sick. “I have never taken a prohibited

substance and never attempted to gain any advantage over my competition by putting anything illegal in my body,” he said. “I would never intentionally violate any anti-doping rule. Unfortunately, although the rule is a newer one and not as widely known as others, I should know better.” He will miss the US national championships which begin in California this week, next month’s Pan Pacific Championships in Tokyo and the 2019 world championships in South Korea. However, Lochte has spoken of his plans to compete for a spot on the team at a fifth straight Olympics in 2020 -- he would turn 36 during the Tokyo Games. “I’m still going to train every day and I have goals that I want to accomplish in 2020, and if anything this will make me more hungry and I’ll definitely be there,” he said. Welshman Thomas takes a 1min 39sec lead over Sky teammate and four-time champion Chris Froome into the first of four days in the Pyrenees Tuesday when the race resumes following a rest day. Dutch rival Tom Dumoulin is third overall at 1:50, Primoz Roglic fourth at 2:38 and Frenchman Romain Bardet fifth at 3:21. Despite three tough days in the mountains up ahead, only one of them -- stage 17 -- ends on a mountaintop. As opposed to downhill finishes, the dramatic summit finishes on the Tour are where Sky’s rivals can realistically take back lost time. And Thomas said: “It’s the last mountaintop (finish) that will be most decisive.” Like most teams, Sky have previewed the routes of all three Pyreneean stages, as well as the penultimate-stage time trial from Saint-Pee-Sur-Nivelle to Espelette. “We’ve seen the finals of them all,” added Thomas, whose bid to become the first Welsh champion of the Tour could be tempered by Froome’s ambitions for a record-equalling fifth yellow jersey. Although 218 km long and with four categorised climbs, none of the

ascents on Tuesday’s 16th stage are over nine kilometres long. And with a downhill finish, it is likely to entice the dozens of riders who have yet to join a breakaway, let alone win a stage. But it, as with most long mountain stages, will be tightly controlled by Sky. “It’s a tough little finish tomorrow into Bagneres-De-Luchon,” Thomas said. The next day, however, all hell could break loose. Stage 17 is only 65 km long but starts with the 14.9 km ascension of the Col de Peyragudes, is followed by the 7.4 km climb over the Col de Val Louron-Azet before the gruelling, 16 km climb to Saint-Lary-Soulan. Adding spice is the fact the organisers, with a nod to Formula One, will line up the top 20 riders on a grid, according to their overall times. “I think it’s unique, it’s going to be tough for sure,” said Thomas. “We expect a lot of attacks from the start. It’s a big, big day. Probably one of the hardest climbs, the last climb. “It finishes at high altitude. You can’t get too carried away at the start for sure.” Some respite will come in the

shape of stage 18, an undulating 171 km ride from Trie-Sur-Baise to Pau. A day later, the final day in the mountains is over 200.5 km. Starting in Lourdes, it features a total of seven categorised climbs, including the ascensions of the Col d’Aspin, Col du Tourmalet and the Col d’Aubisque. But it ends on a downhill, meaning any advantage taken from the leaders on the final climb could, theoretically, be clawed back on the 20 km descent into Laruns. “The Alps block (of stages) was probably tougher,” admitted Thomas, who won back-to-back stages in the Alps, including on Alpe d’Huez. “But it’s going to be a war out there.” If the yellow jersey is still not decided by Friday, it will come down to Saturday’s time trial over 31 km. But given their current advantage, that would not be ideal for Sky. “A dream scenario for us would be to be going into that time trial as we are, first and second in the general classification,” said Froome. “But, with a decent gap on any of our other rivals so that our actual victory isn’t in jeopardy in that last time trial.” (afp)

A complaint has been lodged against the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales accusing him of trying to finance work on his house through the union of players he chaired, according to Spanish media reports on Monday. Radio Cadena SER, which first reported the story, said a court in Valencia opened a preliminary inquiry after a complaint from Miguel Angel Galan, a former

leadership candidate for the RFEF. Rubiales, president of the RFEF since May, would owe 120,000 euros for the work on his house, according to Cadena SER. But he reportedly proposed to pay part of his personal debt with money which was meant to be used for a construction project for the Spanish Players’ Union (AFE). The local courts of the Valencia region confirmed to AFP the fil-

ing of the complaint, but refused to comment on the opening of a preliminary investigation. The AFE said in a statement that it had “not financed any personal work for Luis Rubiales”. Rubiales took over at the RFEF from Angel Maria Villar, who was implicated in a corruption case, and played a key part in the sacking of Spain coach Julen Lopetegui on the eve of the World Cup last month. LOS ANGELES - Six-time Olympic gold medallist Ryan Lochte has been suspended 14 months for an anti-doping violation after he received an intravenous infusion, the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) announced on Monday. While USADA said Lochte was not using a banned substance, athletes can typically only receive IVs as part of hospital treatment or through an exemption. “I wasn’t taking anything illegal. Everything was legal. You can get it at CVS, Walgreens, but there are rules, and you have to obey them,” a “devastated” Lochte told a press conference in South Florida. The 33-year-old American posted a picture of himself getting the IV on social media in May which caused USADA to open an investigation, one that Lochte “fully cooperated” with according to officials. “Lochte received an intravenous infusion of permitted substances at an infusion clinic in a volume greater than 100 mL in a 12-hour period without a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE),” USADA said in a statement, adding the swimmer had accepted his suspension. Lochte’s ban was backdated to May 24, the date he received the treatment that he said was taken as a precaution after his wife and son fell sick. “I have never taken a prohibited

substance and never attempted to gain any advantage over my competition by putting anything illegal in my body,” he said. “I would never intentionally violate any anti-doping rule. Unfortunately, although the rule is a newer one and not as widely known as others, I should know better.” He will miss the US national championships which begin in California this week, next month’s Pan Pacific Championships in Tokyo and the 2019 world championships in South Korea. However, Lochte has spoken of his plans to compete for a spot on the team at a fifth straight Olympics in 2020 -- he would turn 36 during the Tokyo Games. “I’m still going to train every day and I have goals that I want to accomplish in 2020, and if anything this will make me more hungry and I’ll definitely be there,” he said. In 2016, Lochte was banned from swimming for 10 months after he claimed that he and three other US swimmers were robbed after a night of revelry during the Rio Games. Welshman Thomas takes a 1min 39sec lead over Sky teammate and four-time champion Chris Froome into the first of four days in the Pyrenees Tuesday when the race resumes following a rest day. Dutch rival Tom Dumoulin is third overall at 1:50, Primoz Roglic fourth at 2:38 and Frenchman Romain Bardet fifth at 3:21. Despite three tough days in the mountains up ahead, only one of them -- stage 17 -- ends on a mountaintop. As opposed to downhill finishes, the dramatic summit finishes on the Tour are where Sky’s rivals can realistically take back lost time. And Thomas said: “It’s the last mountaintop (finish) that will be most decisive.” Like most teams, Sky have previewed the routes of all three Pyreneean stages, as well as the penultimate-stage time trial from Saint-Pee-Sur-Nivelle to Espelette. “We’ve seen the finals of them all,” added Thomas, whose bid to become the first Welsh champion of the Tour could be tempered by Froome’s ambitions for a record-equalling fifth yellow jersey. Although 218 km long and with four categorised climbs, none of the

ascents on Tuesday’s 16th stage are over nine kilometres long. And with a downhill finish, it is likely to entice the dozens of riders who have yet to join a breakaway, let alone win a stage. But it, as with most long mountain stages, will be tightly controlled by Sky. “It’s a tough little finish tomorrow into Bagneres-De-Luchon,” Thomas said. The next day, however, all hell could break loose. Stage 17 is only 65 km long but starts with the 14.9 km ascension of the Col de Peyragudes, is followed by the 7.4 km climb over the Col de Val Louron-Azet before the gruelling, 16 km climb to Saint-Lary-Soulan. Adding spice is the fact the organisers, with a nod to Formula One, will line up the top 20 riders on a grid, according to their overall times. “I think it’s unique, it’s going to be tough for sure,” said Thomas. “We expect a lot of attacks from the start. It’s a big, big day. Probably one of the hardest climbs, the last climb. “It finishes at high altitude. You can’t get too carried away at the start for sure.” Some respite will come in the

shape of stage 18, an undulating 171 km ride from Trie-Sur-Baise to Pau. A day later, the final day in the mountains is over 200.5 km. Starting in Lourdes, it features a total of seven categorised climbs, including the ascensions of the Col d’Aspin, Col du Tourmalet and the Col d’Aubisque. But it ends on a downhill, meaning any advantage taken from the leaders on the final climb could, theoretically, be clawed back on the 20 km descent into Laruns. “The Alps block (of stages) was probably tougher,” admitted Thomas, who won back-to-back stages in the Alps, including on Alpe d’Huez. “But it’s going to be a war out there.” If the yellow jersey is still not decided by Friday, it will come down to Saturday’s time trial over 31 km. But given their current advantage, that would not be ideal for Sky. “A dream scenario for us would be to be going into that time trial as we are, first and second in the general classification,” said Froome. “But, with a decent gap on any of our other rivals so that our actual victory isn’t in jeopardy in that last time trial.” (afp)

Viral post inflames public anger in China vaccine scandal

BEIJING - China’s newest product safety scare burst onto the public consciousness when an obscure essay alleging corruption in the pharmaceutical industry become an internet sensation, exposing widespread anger and distrust after a string of scandals. The furore over alleged shady dealings by a major vaccine producer has shattered already fragile trust in regulators and illustrated the rising frustrations of China’s increasingly sophisticated consumers. News that pharmaceutical company Changchun Changsheng Biotechnology had fabricated records and been forced to stop manufacturing rabies vaccines was first reported more than a week ago. But it exploded on social media over the weekend, fuelled by a viral essay alleging decades of malfeasance by the company including the bribery of officials to allow low-quality products onto the market. The origin and veracity of the mysterious post remains unverified, but it touched off a cat-and-mouse game as China’s aggressive censors scrambled to prevent its dissemination. However the damage was done. Millions of angry users shared the essay and other information on product-safety problems in a rare public airing of a

touchy national issue. The China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) said last week the problematic rabies vaccine had not left Changsheng’s factory, but the company admitted it had shipped a separate sub-standard vaccine. That vaccine for diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus (DPT) was found by regulators to fail quality standards -- but the company revealed that it sold 250,000 doses to Shandong province last year. As the pressure mounted, further revelations have emerged. Authorities in the northern province of Hebei announced Monday that nearly 150,000 people had received sub-standard DPT vaccines made by another firm, Wuhan Institute of Biological Products. The problems have rekindled already deep fears over domestically made medicines and driven worried parents online to swap information on obtaining imported vaccines. “I don’t trust the vaccines here anymore,” a woman who gave only her surname Zhou told AFP as she waited with her young daughter at a pediatric clinic in Beijing on Tuesday. Zhou said she was willing to pay for imported products rather than accept those offered for free by the government. Hong Kong clinics said they have seen a surge in demand for children’s vaccines. Report says Indonesia ‘land swap’ plan puts forests at risk JAKARTA — Researchers say an Indonesian government plan to give plantation companies new lands in exchange for restoring areas they destroyed could result in more tropical forests being cut down.

Death toll hits 50 from Greek wildfires ATHENS - Fifty people have died and 170 have been injured in wildfires ravaging woodland and villages in the Athens region, as Greek authorities rush to evacuate residents and tourists stranded on beaches along the coast on Tuesday. The death toll soared with a Red Cross official reporting the discovery of 26 bodies in the courtyard of a villa at the seaside resort of Mati. The bodies were entwined and severely burnt, an AFP photographer at the scene said. They appeared to have been caught by the flames trying to reach the sea. The authorities had previously announced 24 deaths and scores of injuries with the majority of casualties found in their homes or cars in Mati, 40 kilometres (25 miles) northeast of the capital. Of the injured, 11 people were in serious condition. Port authorities told AFP they had found four bodies in the sea, including three women and a child who had apparently tried to escape the flames. There were fears the toll may rise further, as people remained unaccounted for.

The land swap plan has raised concerns among conservation groups because of the potential for new conflicts with communities and fears companies might be given new land even before they’ve completed restoration of the degraded swampland forests. It’s also unpopular with plantation operators because new areas they’re allocated could be distant from their factories and mills. Forestry Ministry officials didn’t answer calls. The Anti-Forestry Mafia Coalition, which overlaid government maps of the land swap areas with Indonesia’s forest cover map to arrive at the 40 percent figure, said any new land handed out should only come from areas previously approved for industrial forestry plantations. It also criticized lack of a legally binding requirement to ensure companies restore degraded lands at their own expense before getting new allocations. “Without this provision, the companies can simply walk away from the disaster they’ve created,” the coalition of 14 groups said in a statement. “Restoration may never take place and abandoned areas may be vulnerable to catastrophic fires for years to come.” A 2017 study by a University of Queensland environmental scientist estimated it would cost at least $4.6 billion to re-wet just the 2 million hectares of peatland designated as a priority for restoration by the government. Degraded peatland makes up nearly a quarter of Kalimantan — the Indonesian part of Borneo — and Sumatra. Aside from forestry plantations, a vast area of peatland was drained in Kalimantan for rice production in the 1990s but abandoned by 1999 due to low productivity, according to the University of Queensland research. Indonesian teen raped by her brother jailed for abortion JAKARTA — A 15-year-old Indonesian girl who was raped by her brother has been sentenced to six months in prison for having an abortion, police said Sunday. Both the girl and her 18-year-old brother were convicted Thursday by the District Court of Muara Bulian in Batanghari district in Jambi province, said Singgih Hermawan, deputy chief of the local police.

The brother received a two-year prison sentence for having sex with a minor, Hermawan said. Abortion is illegal in Indonesia, but is allowed in cases of rape, especially if the woman’s life is at risk. However, the abortion must take place within 1 1/2 months of becoming pregnant and be performed by professionals. The girl had her abortion when she was

six months’ pregnant, according to a court official. Her mother is facing charges for aiding the abortion. She said she helped her daughter out of fear of being shamed by neighbors. It was revealed in court that the girl had been raped eight times since September. In May, residents discovered a headless fetus near a palm oil plantation. Police made the arrests in June.

The defendants and their lawyers accepted the sentences, which also ruled that the girl and her brother must undergo rehabilitation at the Institute for Special Education of Children. It was not clear whether the prosecutors, who had demanded a one-year prison sentence for the girl and seven years for her brother, would appeal the sentences. (ap)

TOKYO - Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe warned the U.S. on Friday that higher tariffs on auto imports would backfire and harm not only America’s jobs and economy but also devastate the global economy. Abe told a news conference marking the end of a Diet session that Japan’s auto and auto parts industry has never threatened America’s national security and it never will. Abe said he will keep explaining that to Trump. Trump has ordered the U.S. government to investigate if higher tariffs on foreign-made vehicles and auto parts are justified on national security grounds. Japan’s auto industry has for decades invested billions of dollars in U.S. plants that employ hundreds of thousands of workers. Japanese automakers produce twice as many vehicles in the U.S. as they export from Japan, Abe said. “Japan provides good jobs and contributes greatly to America’s

economy,” Abe said. “If restriction measures were imposed, such employment will be lost, and not only will it have a negative impact on the U.S. economy but also cause tremendous damage to the world economy.” Abe’s government last month sent a report to the U.S. Department of Commerce, warning against any trade restrictions. In that report, Japan’s government said any trade restrictions, if imposed, would increase costs for U.S. consumers and cause many Americans to lose jobs. It said the measures would put a break on global trade, disrupt the market and put global free trade “at great risk.”

Up to 624,000 people could lose their jobs in the U.S. if a 25 percent tariff was levied on automobiles and auto parts and other countries retaliated. Abe said he has repeatedly reminded Trump of Japanese auto makers’ contribution to his country. “Exchanges of trade restriction measures will benefit nobody,” Abe said. “While explaining these points, we will persistently work hard to avoid trade restriction measures.” Already hit by increased U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs, Japan has told the World Trade Organization it may levy retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods totaling about 50 billion yen ($450 million) a year. Survey finds eurozone economy cools as new orders weaken

LONDON - A closely watched survey is showing that economic growth across the 19-country eurozone moderated at the start of the third quarter. Financial information firm IHS Markit said Tuesday that its purchasing managers index — a broad gauge of business activity — for the eurozone eased to 54.3 in July from 54.9 in June. Though still above the 50 mark that means the economy continues to grow, the firm said weakened new order inflows and reduced business expectations of future activity fostered a downbeat picture. The July reading, if sustained over the following two months, indicates quarterly economic growth of 0.4 percent, down from the anticipated 0.5 percent in the second quarter. The 54-year-old said she then noticed three other nearby animals, and as she began backing away, they attacked. “There was blood everywhere on the ground. I just looked at my wounds and ‘Oh my God’,” she told Channel Seven television late Monday from her hospital bed. “I looked down and thought ‘Oh my God, am I going to die?, are they going to get me down?’.” Rundle, who will undergo reconstructive surgery to graft skin to her body, said she screamed for 10 minutes before co-workers came to her aid. “They just wouldn’t let go. I think once they had the taste they just didn’t let go,” she said of the feral dogs, which are native to Australia. A relative of the woman added: “She had bites everywhere but her head.” East Pilbara shire president Lynne Craigie said she had never seen a dingo attack like it in her 20 years living in the region.

“Obviously any animal that’s hungry is going to be aggressive but I was very surprised to hear there were three of them sort of attacking in a pack,” she told broadcaster ABC. Dingo attacks are rare, with just a handful of incidents reported in recent years. In 2012 a German man was savaged while camping on Fraser island in Queensland state, while a three-year-old and a South Korean woman were bitten in separate incidents on the popular tourist destination known for its dingo population the year before. A nine-year-old boy was killed by wild dogs there in 2001. The most prominent dingo case involved baby Azaria Chamberlain who was snatched by one in 1980. Chamberlain’s mother spent three years in jail convicted of her murder, but was released in 1986 when some of her daughter’s clothing was recovered by chance near a dingo lair. The hyperloop idea involves passengers in pods travelling at very high speeds down sealed tunnels. The team’s pod hit 457km/h (290mph) on a 1.2km (0.75 mile) test track. Run by the SpaceX aerospace company, the competition aims to refine the technologies that could underpin the superfast transport system. Robots that measure just a fraction of an inch in length could be used in search-and-rescue operations after national disasters, or to inspect hazardous environments.

PICTURE the Olympic Games — except instead of human athletes, the competitors are all insectsized robots. That’s the scenario proposed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), representatives said in a statement. The group is seeking innovative designs for robots that measure just a fraction of an inch, and the tiny bots will compete against each other in a series of contests of strength, speed and agility — similar to those that try the limits of human achievement in the Olympics. The robots would be developed for a new DARPA program called Short-Range Independent Microrobotic Platforms (SHRIMP). Under SHRIMP, the bug-sized bots will be tested for deploying in locations that are difficult for people

to navigate, or are dangerous or inaccessible to humans, according to the statement. SHRIMP will research and develop novel solutions for powering small robots, and will investigate new materials that could improve the robots’ performance without significantly increasing their size or heft. And to test how well the robots can perform, SHRIMP will put them through their paces in “an Olympic-style evaluation,” with performances demonstrating their maneuverability, dexterity and mobility, according to the statement. One of the “sports” categories for the bots will test untethered actuator-power systems, showing how high and how far the robot can jump, how much weight they can lift, how far they can throw objects and how they perform in a

tug of war. The other category is for complete robot designs: The tiny bots will be evaluated on rock piling, climbing a vertical surface, navigating an obstacle course, and performing in a biathlon. Robots competing in DARPA’s robo-lympics may be small, but their minuscule size will allow them to perform important tasks that are off-limits to larger robots. This data compiling is aimed at preventing local wisdom from becoming eroded by modernization and globalization. Spokesperson of the 163/Wirasatya Military Resort Command, Ida Bagus Diana Sukertia, said the data collection team was led by Rochiman and received by Commander of 163/Wirasatya Military Resort, A.M. Suharyadi. Before the Hindu figures, Balinese customary figures and Provincial Government of Bali representatives, Rochiman explained that his coming to Bali is for the purpose of collecting data on the study of local wisdom. The army is conducting such data collection through several working groups throughout Indonesia. Rochiman added that there is wealth of local wisdom in Indonesia from Sabang to Merauke that needs to be preserved and developed so as not to disappear. “Working Group V led by Brig. Gen Rochiman is assigned to Bali as a a very unique region with rich local wisdom”, he said. The data obtained will be the subject of study and follow up and used as input for the government to create standard regulations

More than 240,000 people seek James Gunn re-hire SAN DIEGO - More than 240,000 people have signed a petition for Disney to rehire “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise director James Gunn, who also garnered celebrity support just days after he was axed over a series of offensive tweets. “I’m smart enough to know this most likely won’t change anything but hopefully, this could get Disney to realize the mistake they made and not do it again in the future,” said a person named Chandler Edwards, who launched the petition on Change.org. “I agree on the point that if people say a bunch of stupid shit while working for a studio, the studio has full right to fire him over the possible controversy. “This situation is very different, though, as he made these jokes years before he was working for Disney and also the fact that they were jokes.” Edwards argued that if Gunn was being punished by being removed from the third installment in the popular series, “you have to do it for all the other directors who have said some crappy joke sometime in their life, which is all of them.” The tweets, mainly from 2008 and 2011, joked about taboo topics such as rape and pedophilia. Gunn, 51, has been an outspoken

critic of President Donald Trump and has drawn the ire of conservative critics, who went back through his timeline and dug up the tweets. “Guardians” star Dave Bautista defended Gunn on Twitter. “What will you do when the #cybernazis attack you? Who will stand by you? Who will cowardly distance themselves from you? Who will punish you for horrible JOKES in the past instead of defending you for INSPIRING millions? MILLIONS!!!” he wrote. After the offensive tweets resurfaced late Thursday, Gunn used the micro-blogging platform to say “I’ve developed as a person, so has my work and my humor” after early years as a “provocateur.” Gunn, who has deleted his account, described himself as a “very, very different” person than when he wrote the tweets, now focusing on love rather than anger. Gunn directed both “Guardians of the Galaxy” films. The third film in the series is due out in 2020. Gunn was fired after Disney television network ABC axed Roseanne Barr from the sitcom “Roseanne” for a racist tweet about former White House aide Valerie Jarrett. Stormy Daniels and husband to divorce: lawyer

WASHINGTON - Adult film star Stormy Daniels, who is battling President Donald Trump in court over their alleged sexual encounter a decade ago, and her husband plan to divorce, her lawyer announced Monday.

Daniels, 39, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, married Glendon Crain, 41, in 2010. Crain is a heavy metal musician and pornographic movie actor, featuring in adult films under the name Brendon Miller. Daniels, who was married twice previously, gave birth to a daughter in 2011. “My client Stormy Daniels and her husband Glen have decided to end their marriage,” lawyer Michael Avenatti said in a statement on Twitter.

“A petition for divorce was filed last week, the accuracy of which is vehemently disputed,” Daniel’s attorney added. “Stormy’s daughter remains her number one priority,” Avenatti said. “She kindly asks for privacy for the sake of her family.” Daniels is suing Trump to invalidate a non-disclosure agreement that prevents her from discussing their alleged 2006 sexual encounter. “I don’t need or want privacy.

I want truth. And it will come out. I’m not afraid,” Daniels wrote. Trump’s personal attorney, Michael Cohen, paid Daniels $130,000 just days before the 2016 presidential election in exchange for her silence. Daniels told CBS’s “60 Minutes” in March that she had unprotected sex with Trump once, and was threatened by a man in a parking lot in Las Vegas when she sought to sell her story five years later. Wave After Wave of Garbage Hits the Dominican Republic

Come for the beaches, say tourism ads for the Dominican Republic. But it has some beaches you might want to skip right now. The Caribbean nation is known for sapphire seas and ivory beaches, but it is grappling with waves of garbage washing up on its shores, a vivid reminder of the presence of thousands of tons of plastic in the world’s oceans. Those piles, most notably the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch,” are usually far from human settlements, to say nothing of resort destinations. But instead of visitors relaxing on Montesinos Beach in the capital, Santo Domingo, there has been

an altogether different scene, one unlikely to wind up on a postcard: Hundreds of city workers and volunteers who have been waging an uphill battle against wave after wave of sludgy garbage. Images have shown teams using pikes, shovels and excavators to lift the garbage, only to be met with new waves carrying even more. Sixty tons of garbage have been collected on the beach since last week, Reuters reported. The haul included plastic bottles and Styrofoam takeout boxes, Parley

for the Oceans, an organization that works to reduce plastic waste in the world’s oceans, said in a statement. The images are shocking, but perhaps not for people who live in the Dominican Republic. “It happens pretty much all the time if there is a strong rainfall or a storm,” said Cyrill Gutsch, the founder of Parley for the Oceans, in a telephone interview. The phenomenon is not confined to the Dominican Republic, he said, and can be seen in many developing nations with a coastline. “Everybody uses the rivers and the beaches as dump sites.” What is happening in the Do-

minican Republic is only a small symptom of the larger global problem, Mr. Gutsch said. Plastic dumped in and near rivers washes into the ocean, and only a small percentage bounces back onto shore. The majority makes it to the high seas. Mr. Gutsch said that recycling was a short-term solution and amounted to only a bandage.
