CHICAGO — Popular 1980s band Duran Duran is suing its own fan club. The group known for hits like “Notorious” and “Hungry Like the Wolf” accuses the suburban Chicago-based club of breaching contract by not paying the band promised revenue. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Duran Duran’s lawsuit names Glenview-based Worldwide Fan Clubs, Inc. as the defendant. The suit was filed in Cook County Circuit Court this week. It says the band entered a 2010 contract allowing the club to collect memberships and sell

merchandise. The contract also allegedly stipulates Duran Duran would get 75 percent of the profits. Someone who answered the phone Wednesday at the Glenview office of Worldwide Fan Clubs said the company had no comment.

Workers are finishing a project in Bali Island. Some of project development of properties in Bali follow international architecture rather than Balinese architecture. The usage of Balinese ornaments increasingly diminishes. If it does exist, it usually makes use of synthetic materials in order to be more efficient.

Bali properties absorb foreign architecture

DENPASAR - The usage of Balinese ornaments increasingly diminishes. If it does exist, it usually makes use of synthetic materials in order to be more efficient. In addition, Bali property currently absorbs foreign ornaments, including European ornament. “If the government does not enforce strict rules, 90 percent of the buildings in Bali will accommodate foreign architecture, including European one. Bali is inhabited by very heterogeneous population originating in diverse ethnic groups, including expatriates from various countries and they all need homes,” said the board of Real Estate Indonesia (REI) of Bali Chapter, I Wayan Sukarja. He claimed that synthetic materials were cheaper. Nevertheless, the middle up class or lover of traditional architecture was still using local materials and to this day still existed. To preserve it, the firmness of government as a regulator was questioned and primarily the office handling the building permit should tighten the composi-

tion of local materials and traditional Balinese ornament. “Otherwise, most of the buildings in Bali will apply the architecture of outside Bali, including foreign style. In the long run, the architectural beauty of Bali will become extinct,” he said. Moreover, various ethnic groups living in Bali needed residence or home. On that account, when applying the building permit (IMB), the rules could begin to prevail. When violating, the officer should be brave to dismantle the building and never be easily bribed. “Keep in mind, they want to invest in Bali, so they must comply with the rules in Bali. Bali is not owned by investors, Bali is owned by Balinese community and loved by the world

community,” said Sukarja. He reminded the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to more aggressively give a mental shock for the corrupter and corrupter prospective. On that account, he expected the officials should not use shortcuts to get wealth quickly by taking advantage of their position. A property entrepreneur, Gede Semadi, stated that so far the Balinese architecture in Bali remained to impress its Balinese elements. “What makes something not good is when Balinese ornaments are made of synthetic materials. For example, I think the building of the Ngurah Rai Airport is really bad,” he said. He also expected the government, in this case the licensing office, to seriously supervise. If found any violation, it should be dealt with firmly, not to mention the use foreign architecture. “I do not agree with the use of foreign architecture. There must be firmness of regional government in order that Balinese architecture can be dominant,” he said. (kmb36)
