‘Dark Knight’ earns $160.9M in wake of tragedy Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES — “The Dark Knight Rises” earned a sizeable $160.9 million over the weekend, making it the biggest 2-D opening ever, but falling slightly below expectations following the mass shooting at a Colorado screening of the Batman film. Warner Bros. said Monday that the final installment of director Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy earned $160,887,295. The debut makes “The Dark Knight Rises” the biggest 2-D opening ever ahead of its 2008 predecessor, “The Dark Knight.” It also gives the movie the third-largest opening after the 3-D films “The Avengers” with $207.4 million and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2” with $169.2 million. Despite the impressive $160.9 million opening, “The Dark Knight Rises” fell somewhat below box office expectations going into the weekend, which ranged from $170 million to $200 million. “Clearly, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ was on everyone’s minds,” said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for Hollywood.com

who specializes in box office. “I think the American public showed they were not going to be sacred away from the movie theater by the actions of a lunatic.” Dergarabedian called the film’s opening “extremely impressive given the tragic events that unfolded on Friday.” “Dark Knight Rises” earned $19.1 million alone from IMAX screenings. Tickets for 3-D and IMAX films cost a few more dollars than 2-D screenings, netting extra cash at the box office. Movies released in 3-D typically earn under half of their income in 3-D screenings, sometimes as little as a third. Sony, Fox, Disney, Paramount, Uni-

versal and Lionsgate joined “Dark Knight Rises” distributor Warner Bros. in publicly withholding their usual revenue reports this weekend until Monday. They did so out of respect for the victims and their families after the mass shooting that left 12 dead and 58 wounded at a midnight screening of the movie in Aurora, Colo. Following behind “Dark Knight Rises” in the No. 2 spot was “Ice Age: Continental Drift,” the animated Fox film which dropped 56 percent in its second weekend to $20.4 million, and the Sony superhero reboot “The Amazing SpiderMan,” which earned $10.9 million during its third weekend at the box office, in the No. 3 position.

Mariah Carey joins ‘American Idol’ as new judge

Associated Press Writer

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Mariah Carey will join “American Idol” as a judge next season, Fox announced Monday, bringing her star power to the show that remains a ratings leader but has seen its viewership and pop culture status diminish. “I am so excited to be joining ‘Idol,’” said Carey, addressing the Television Critics Association via Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly’s cellphone, which he put on speakerphone for the hotel ballroom meeting. She couldn’t be on hand with the group because “this kind of all just happened really quickly,” Carey said in her brief remarks. “I can’t wait to get started in the fall ... and I will see you in January.” The show, which saw judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez exit at the end of last season, will be back on the air for season 12 in January. Reilly called Carey “the biggest recording artist that any of these (talent) shows has ever had,” adding that she was the “artist that many of these contestants have tried to emulate, have tried some of the songs, have tried to hit the notes.” Playing the drama up, Reilly placed a call to Carey and put her on speaker. “Hi, Mariah. How are you? It’s Kevin,” he said.

“We do have a deal, don’t we? Yes!” Reilly said he was “thrilled” to confirm reports that Carey was being courted by Fox and said the deal was freshly signed within the last few hours. The Grammy-winning pop star is receiving just shy of $18 million a year for a one-year contract with a renewal option,

according to a person familiar with the negotiations. The person, lacking authority to discuss the matter publicly, spoke on condition of anonymity. The exit of Tyler and Lopez left original judge Randy Jackson and started a guessing game about potential replacements, with Carey at the top of the list.

Apprehensive condition

Residents breed Bali starling Bali Post

SINGARAJA - Population of Bali starling in the forest of West Bali National Park (TNBB) has been increasingly alarming lately. Estimated, the bird population in their habitat now only consists of 115 adult birds and 62 squealers. Amidst such condition, the villagers of Sumberklampok, Gerokgak subdistrict, bordering with the area of TNBB breed the Bali starling. The endeavor of residents coalesced into the Manuk Jegeg group got per-

mission from the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) of Bali in March 2011. Secretary of the Manuk Jegeg group, Istiyarto Ismu, on Monday (Jul 23) told that after the BKSDA

issued the breeding license his members made a simple cage. To build the cage, he spent some IDR 2 million to IDR 7 million. Afterward, the Manuk Jegeg group proposed to borrow the parents of Bali starling to the Association of Bali Starling Conserver (APCB) and Surabaya Zoo. As planned, the group borrowed 30 parents, but only 15 pairs of brood stock were approved and they were commended in the captivity of TNBB.

Armed with those brood stocks, they could produce 13 young birds. The first babies hatched on July 26, 2011. The babies were first looked after on August 7, 2011 or exactly 12 days after hatching. “When the first squealers hatched, we did not have any experience in caring for the squealers of Bali starling. So, we attempted to take care of them in a way we got from a number of references,” he said. Istiyarto added the baby birds just taken from their parents were

transferred into a cage finely made of coconut fibers arranged in such a way so as to resemble a bird nest. Babies of the Bali starling were then placed in a box with five-watt light bulb serving as a warmer. Every morning, at about 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. local time, they were put under sunlight. Meanwhile, they were fed with raw tofu, weaver ant’s egg and additional wood worm every two hours. Continued on page 6
