‘Dark Knight’ earns $160.9M in wake of tragedy Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES — “The Dark Knight Rises” earned a sizeable $160.9 million over the weekend, making it the biggest 2-D opening ever, but falling slightly below expectations following the mass shooting at a Colorado screening of the Batman film. Warner Bros. said Monday that the final installment of director Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy earned $160,887,295. The debut makes “The Dark Knight Rises” the biggest 2-D opening ever ahead of its 2008 predecessor, “The Dark Knight.” It also gives the movie the third-largest opening after the 3-D films “The Avengers” with $207.4 million and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2” with $169.2 million. Mariah Carey joins ‘American Idol’ as new judge

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Mariah Carey will join “American Idol” as a judge next season, Fox announced Monday, bringing her star power to the show that remains a ratings leader but has seen its viewership and pop culture status diminish. “I am so excited to be joining ‘Idol,’” said Carey, addressing the Television Critics Association via Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly’s cellphone, which he put on speakerphone for the hotel ballroom meeting. She couldn’t be on hand with the group because “this kind of all just happened really quickly,” Carey said in her brief remarks. “I can’t wait to get started in the fall ... and I will see you in January.” The show, which saw judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez exit at the end of last season, will be back on the air for season 12 in January. Reilly called Carey “the biggest recording artist that any of these (talent) shows has ever had,” adding that she was the “artist that many of these contestants have tried to emulate, have tried some of the songs, have tried to hit the notes.” Playing the drama up, Reilly placed a call to Carey and put her on speaker. “Hi, Mariah. How are you? It’s Kevin,” he said.

issued the breeding license his members made a simple cage. To build the cage, he spent some IDR 2 million to IDR 7 million. Afterward, the Manuk Jegeg group proposed to borrow the parents of Bali starling to the Association of Bali Starling Conserver (APCB) and Surabaya Zoo. As planned, the group borrowed 30 parents, but only 15 pairs of brood stock were approved and they were commended in the captivity of TNBB.

Armed with those brood stocks, they could produce 13 young birds. The first babies hatched on July 26, 2011. The babies were first looked after on August 7, 2011 or exactly 12 days after hatching. “When the first squealers hatched, we did not have any experience in caring for the squealers of Bali starling. So, we attempted to take care of them in a way we got from a number of references,” he said. Istiyarto added the baby birds just taken from their parents were

transferred into a cage finely made of coconut fibers arranged in such a way so as to resemble a bird nest. Babies of the Bali starling were then placed in a box with five-watt light bulb serving as a warmer. Every morning, at about 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. local time, they were put under sunlight. Pyramid Discotheque on Jalan Dewi Sri, Legian, was complained by residents. It happened because since the first operation in early 2012, it was frequently opened until 4:00 a.m. local time. Not only that, it was also alleged to have no permits. A number of residents complained to the legislator of Badung regarding this issue. “Pyramid Discotheque is very disturbing the neighborhood because the pounding music is audible everywhere, even it is open up to 04:00 in the morning every day. It is extremely disturbing the residents living around Jalan Dewi Sri and Legian LC denoting a residential area. Complaint of the residents has taken place since it was opened. Some people even came to my home to ask for clarity about the discotheque such as Mr. Sukadegeng and Mr. Angrok. They complained because their house was adjacent to the discotheque,” said a Badung legislator from Legian, I Wayan Puspa Negara, on

Monday (Jul 23). In response to the complaint of the residents, Puspa Negara claimed to have contacted the Badung Government Tourism Office. Based on the explanation of the Tourism Office it was known if the discotheque had not held any licenses, such as the building permit, disturbance permit, business location permit, environmental impact analysis permit as well as operational permit. He said further, the area on Jalan Dewi Sri and its surroundings belonged to the area of service industry, trade and settlement. In

In June 2012, recipient of the rice for the poor (raskin) in Bali showed an increase up to 46,058 households. The Bali Logistic Agency recorded the number of household target (RTS) of the rice recipient in that period reached 180,862 households from 134,804 households previously. Secretary of the Bali Logistic Agency working unit, Nyoman Karta, said the increasing number of poor households was based on the result of data adjustment by Central Statistics Agency (BPS) on the poor households. It was then used as a basic reference by the government to establish the residents that were eligible to receive rice for the poor. “We got the data from BPS Bali. We in the Logistic Agency only see service to distribute the rice for the poor. With the increasing number of recipients, the allocation of rice to poor household will also increase from 2,022 tons to 2,712 tons per month,” Nyoman Karta said on Monday (Jul 23). According to him, the data indicated that only two regencies in Bali whose number of the poor household decreasing, namely the Bangli and Karangasem Regency. In Bangli Regency, the poor household amounted to 13,451, and then decreased to 11,889. “Then, Karangasem Regency showed a decrease to 26,787 households from 35,921 households. Other than these regencies, all showed an increase in the number of poor household,” he said. He said the increase in the number of poor household in Bali happened because there was a target expansion by the central government and it should be re-classified. Based on the rules, the people targeted to receive the rice for the poor were classified into four, namely very poor, poor, almost poor and vulnerable to be poor. “Previously, there was no category of vulnerable to be poor. On that account, recipient of the rice for the poor showed an increase,” he affirmed. Nyoman Karta explained the rice distribution had not run perfectly because it was still in adjustment phase, though it was enacted in June 2012. Besides, there were regencies showing an increase and decrease. “In this July, the rice for the poor is still experiencing difficulty in terms of its distribution. It still requires further adjustment because there are families who no longer get the rice for the poor,” he said. He added that each household was eligible to receive as much as 15 kg of rice for the poor at the price of IDR 1,600 per kg. Meanwhile, the number rice distributed to poor households in June 2012 reached 1,553 tons. However, of the amount distributed, the Logistic Agency still had receivables amounting to IDR 1.8 billion. “We still have arrears, but will not last long. I have confidence it can be settled before this yearend,” said Nyoman Karta while adding the rice stock was still enough and reaching 19,313 tons in December. (kmb27)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

A Chinese dairy has been ordered to suspend production after a cancercausing toxin was found in its infant formula, China’s quality watchdog said Monday, in the country’s latest milk scare. Ava Dairy Co. Ltd has started a recall after high levels of aflatoxin, which is caused by mould, was found in products made between July and December, the watchdog said, according to the official Xinhua news agency. The affected formula was mainly sold to supermarkets in Hunan and Guangdong, said Li Yuanping, spokesman for China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. China is trying to crack down on product safety violations to reassure citizens and restore faith in the government after a series of high-profile scandals. The latest case comes just a month after dairy maker Yili began recalling batches of baby formula when authorities found they contained high levels of mercury. It took years — if not decades — for her to get comfortable with her galactic status. What drew her out was her San Diego-based education company, Sally Ride Science, which promotes science and math careers for girls and young women. She was determined to give back and she did, a thousand times over before her death of pancreatic cancer on Monday at age 61. Ride burst onto the public stage when NASA chose her to be the nation’s first woman in space. With her catchy space-flying name and rock-solid science credentials, Ride inspired females the world over with her historic shuttle flight in 1983, five years after she and five other women gained entry to NASA’s exclusively male astronaut club. Some of those girls who looked up to Ride, way back when, went on to become astronauts themselves. Ride, a physicist, proved that women could be equal partners in space and that they, too, could aspire to such heights. Ride was intensely private, though, and spurned the news media. Her astronaut ex-husband, Steve Hawley, recalled Monday how she found herself “a very public persona,” and “it was a role in which she was never fully comfortable.” “While she never enjoyed being a celebrity, she recognized that it gave her the opportunity to encourage children, particularly young girls, to reach their full potential,” Hawley said in a statement.

Last month Hedi Slimane made the headlines when it was announced he would rename Yves Saint Laurent’s ready-to-wear line as Saint Laurent Paris, and now the first images of the rebranding have emerged online. The new name is a nod to Saint Laurent’s move into ready-to-wear in 1966 with the collection Saint Laurent Rive Gauche. Meanwhile, just last week Slimane revealed he may bring couture back to the label, which closed its illustrious couture house back in 2002. “Haute couture is a legitimate subject for Yves Saint Laurent and could resume one day,” he said in an interview with the August issue of French Vogue. Slimane will make his first big statement to the international press this September during Paris Fashion Week when he showcases his debut Spring 2013 womenswear designs for the iconic French fashion house.

The box has ‘Saint Laurent’ written on it, with Paris appearing in smaller type beneath, surrounded by a simple square black frame. Facebook fans’ reactions to the design have been mixed, with some commentators lamenting the loss of the word Yves and others showing their support for new designer Slimane. Pierre Bergé, who founded the label in 1962 along with the late Saint Laurent, previously applauded the decision as it comes alongside a series of moves to return the fashion house to its origins.

Over 350 guests attended the auction fundraiser, expertly hosted by SurfTime Magazine Editor-In-Chief Matt George, and held at the beautiful Uluwatu Surf Villas overlooking the Indian Ocean. All proceeds from the auction will help fund ESRU clean-up projects and environmental initiatives at world-famous Uluwatu beach, one of the greatest surf spots in the world. Among the prized items auctioned off Saturday night was original artwork by American artist Kevin Walsh, rare collectable surfboards, and historic surfing memorabilia. The two items fetching the highest bids of the evening were the Dream Sessions, where the winning bidders get to surf the worldfamous waves at Uluwatu and Padang Padang for one hour with just a few friends. Those dogs were secured shortly after a black Daihatsu with license plate B 1558 SFW was going out of the vessel from Ketapang Harbor. The officers who had been previously informed on the existence of illegal luggage then stopped the car together with relevant authorities. seven plastic boxes with a breed dog. When the owner was asked to present the document, he could not do it. Aside from having no document, since the beginning the entry of dogs and rabies carrier animals (HPR) to Bali had been banned. Subsequently, the dogs along with the owner were taken to the Quarantine Office. Having been examined, it was known the dogs totally amounted to 13 heads of different types. Seven of them were female dogs. The dog carrier said he was just a driver and asked to take the dog

to the address listed on the box. Budiarta said it was a smuggling and infringed the Article 6 of letter a and c as well as Article 9 of Law No. 16/1992, and Article 3 letter a and d of the Government Regulation No. 82/2003 on the quarantine and prohibitions against the entry of rabies carrier animals into Bali. Until last Monday, the authority of Quarantine Office was still tracing the dog owners and checking up the dog health. “We continue the process, and then we will be able to decide whether the dogs will be eliminated or rejected,” he concluded. One of the farmers in the Subak Nyanglan, Mangku Pageh, when met at location on Monday (Jul 23) admitted the farmland at Subak Nyanglan consisting of three sub-groups (Buduk, Linmas and Tagtag) had not been getting any water since a week. According to him, it was the impact of irrigation project in the upstream area. More seriously, of the 79 hectares of farmland at Subak Nyanglan, 8 hectares did not get water at all. “The water does not reach the southern area of Subak Bukbuk whereas the area is also in need of water,” he said. Accompanied by Nyoman Karuk, Mangku Pageh said if he had crop failures for three times. However, there was no attention at all from the subak chief. Moreover, so far the assistance obtained was not explained transparently. The farmers were even asked to buy the seed assistance, including the organic fertilizer whereas the seed and fertilizer assistance were given by the government. “So far, we are consistently asked to buy seeds and fertilizer,” he explained. Meanwhile, the Subak Chief, Nyoman Karca, when asked for his confirmation he did not deny if the water had not flowed into the subak area for a week. He also added if there was an irrigation project under progress in the upstream area. But, Karca denied if there was no notice to subak members related to the project.

Even, Karca had socialized it through a meeting with the subak members. “As a matter of fact, the irrigation project set to be worked on since June 20. We have informed the farmers if we are difficult to get water. However, the farmers were desperate to plant rice,” he said. How about the assistance assumed not transparent? According to Karca, his party even had told the farmers about the assistance from the government like the assistance of crop failure given by the regency government worth IDR 60 million in 2011. BEIJING - Chinese President Hu Jintao has called for unity in the ruling Communist Party and unflinching backing for economic reforms in the face of “unprecedented challenges”, as Beijing struggles with a scandal-hit leadership transition and economic slowdown. Hu’s speech to dozens of top officials dominated the front pages of China’s major state-run newspapers on Tuesday, a sign of its importance in setting the themes for a party congress late this year that will install a new generation of leaders. Using jargon-laden political slogans, Hu laid out two themes likely to dominate the congress: a call for conformity after the contentious dismissal of one-time leadership contender Bo Xilai; and a defense of Hu’s efforts to shift the economy to more balanced, equitable growth driven by domestic consumption.

“We confront unprecedented opportunities and also confront unprecedented challenges,” Hu said in the speech given to officials on Monday. “We must unwaveringly take the correct course pioneered by the party and the people over a long period, and neither flinch in the face of any dangers nor be distracted by any interference,” he said. Hu did not mention the downfall of Bo, the ambitious party chief of Chongqing in southwest China who was ousted in March over a scandal centered on accusations that Bo’s wife killed a British businessman. Nor did Hu lay out new policies. 24 civilians, were killed in violence across Syria. At a Damascus news conference Monday, foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said Syria has chemical weapons and will use them if attacked by outsiders, though not against its own civilians. Makdissi’s remarks came amid growing international concern that Damascus is preparing to deploy its chemical arsenal in the repression of a 16-month uprising against the Assad regime. “Syria will not use any chemical or other unconventional weapons against its civilians, and will only use them in case of external aggression,” Makdissi told reporters.

“Any stocks of chemical weapons that may exist, will never, ever be used against the Syrian people,” he said, adding that in the event of foreign attack, “the generals will be deciding when and how we use them.” President Obama responded swiftly, warning Assad not to make the “tragic mistake” of deciding to unleash his stockpile of chemical weapons. “Given the regime’s stockpile of chemical weapons, we will continue to make it clear to Assad and those around him that the world is watching,” Obama told an audience of US veterans in the western US state of Nevada.

The agency lowered the outlook for the German economy to “negative” from “stable” -- along with a similar move for the Netherlands and Luxembourg -- sending a stark warning that no economy is immune from the eurozone crisis. Moody’s said that the three AAA-rated countries faced risks from the increased prospect of Greece leaving the eurozone and from the possible need to bail out Spain and Italy. “The level of uncertainty about the outlook for the euro area, and the potential impact of plausible scenarios on member states, are no longer consistent with stable outlooks,” it said. The ratings agency pointed to a “reactive and gradualist policy response” by European leaders as one cause for continued concern.

But even if Greece survives, Moody’s warned that richer nations would likely shoulder more burdens going forward, including the possibility of bailing out large eurozone members. “The continued deterioration in Spain and Italy’s macroeconomic and funding environment has increased the risk that they will require some kind of external support.” That would send the eurozone crisis to a different level. “Spain’s economy and government bond market is around double the combined size of those of Greece, Portugal and Ireland,” Moody’s said referring to the three already bailed-out eurozone nations. Moody’s also announced that Finland’s AAA rating and outlook were unchanged.

When releasing the Bali regional economic report, Deputy BI in Denpasar Sunarto said the reduction in tuna exports to Japan had a significant impact on foreign exchange earnings in the fisheries sector. The export of fish and lobsters to Japan has also decreased by 14.67 percent. Therefore, Bali’s non-oil foreign exchange earnings in the first quarter has declined 3.3 percent year-on-year, reaching only US$143.55 million, with export volume at 30,500 tonnes. South Korea’s President Lee Myung-Bak apologised to the nation Tuesday for corruption cases allegedly involving his elder brother and close aides. “I bow my head and apologise for causing concern to the people with these incidents,” a solemn Lee said in brief televised remarks. “It breaks my heart... that such regrettable things have happened among people so close to me.” The incidents are seen as a setback for Lee’s conservative ruling party before a presidential election in December. He himself is barred from serving a second five-year term due to constitutional limits. Lee’s elder brother Lee Sang-Deuk was arrested and detained earlier this month pending a corruption trial. JAKARTA - Indonesia said Monday the local subsidiary of US mining giant Freeport-McMoRan was willing to sell a stake on Jakarta’s stock market, but had not agreed to divest the majority share the government sought. Indonesian authorities announced a new law in March cutting maximum foreign ownership in mining companies from 80 percent to less than half, in a bid to keep a larger portion of revenues from the country’s vast natural resources. Freeport Indonesia’s Grasberg project in the restive province of Papua is the world’s biggest gold and second-biggest copper mine, employing more than 20,000 people. “They (Freeport Indonesia) agreed to divest a stake, but there’s no agreement on the 51 percent that we requested,” Coordinating Minister for the Economy Hatta Rajasa told reporters. “I have asked them to divest via an initial public offering (IPO) in Indonesia and they agreed.” Freeport Indonesia said it has agreed to sell 9.36 percent of its share. “We agree to sell a stake, but at the moment we only agreed to 9.36 percent,” a Freeport Indonesia spokesman told AFP. “Freeport-McMoRan have offered 9.36 percent of Freeport Indonesia’s shares in Indocopper Investama to the Indonesian government.” Indocopper Investama is the Freeport subsidiary that owns and operates Grasberg mine. “The government has offered them to the local government

“If successful, the national car product will be the trend setter for development of cars with low emission to support the LCEP program,” Suhari said here on Monday.
