Book by ‘Game of Thrones’ author to be animated film

NEW YORK - Warner Bros is set to produce an animated film based on an early book by the author of the “Game of Thrones” saga, a source familiar with the matter told AFP Wednesday. The report, which first appeared on the specialty website Deadline, says that author George R.R. Martin will produce the film based on “The Ice Dragon,” published in 1980. The book, written for young people, appeared well ahead of Martin’s “Game of Thrones” series and does not take place in the land of the Seven Kingdoms, the setting of the “Thrones” medieval fantasy series.George R.R. Martin fans are eagerly awaiting the sixth “Game of Thrones” series, titled “The Winds of Winter,” which has been promised since 2012.

Bantar Gebang at full capacity in 10 years: Sanitation agency

The Bantar Gebang garbage dump in Bekasi, West Java, will be at full capacity within 10 years as a result of a lack of waste treatment facilities, an official has said. Currently, 7,000 tons of waste from Jakarta are dumped at Bantar Gebang every day.

In late April, the author announced that readers will have to wait at least until 2019 to see the book published. Martin has fallen so far behind in his book writing that the hit HBO TV series has already gone past the storyline in the books. The much anticipated eighth and final season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” is expected in 2019. (afp)

The absence of waste treatment facilities has resulted in trash piling up to a height of 25 meters. The Jakarta Sanitation Agency’s Bantar Gebang management head, Asep Kuswanto, said that to process the waste, the Jakarta admin-

istration would introduce a sanitary landfill system, meaning that the waste would be buried at the site. “With the system, Bantar Gebang can operate until 2032,” Asep said on Thursday. The administration has allocated

Rp 13 billion (US$974,660) from the city budget to procure dirt to bury the garbage, he said. The administration has also allocated Rp 15 billion to procure geomembrane to cover the waste to prevent precipitation from enter-

ing the landfill and to prevent the escape of landfill gas. The produced methane gas could be effectively used to convert the waste into energy, Asep said. Meanwhile, the administration is struggling to establish an intermediate treatment facility (ITF) in the city. “We’re selecting the parties to develop the ITF from the 200

proposals we received,” Asep said. (afp) News can also be heard in “Bali Image” at Global Radio FM 96.5 from 9.30 until 10.00 am. Spanish rapper given jail for ‘glorifying terrorism’ vows to ‘disobey’

MADRID - A Spanish rapper whose three-and-a-half-year sentence for “glorifying terrorism” and insulting the crown caused an outcry said Wednesday he would defy authorities just a day before he was due in prison, amid reports he may have fled the country. Jose Miguel Arenas Beltran -- better known as Valtonyc -- was sentenced last year for lyrics that Spain’s National Court felt warranted prison, and the Supreme Court upheld this in February. Lyrics included: “Let them be as frightened as a police

officer in the Basque Country” and “the king has a rendez-vous at the village square, with a noose around his neck.” The reference to the Basque Country hinted at violence by ETA, the separatist group that for decades staged scores of attacks across Spain that left hundreds of officials and civilians dead. The 24-year-old also sang against Jorge Campos, the former president of the Balearic Circle, a foundation that fought against the imposition of the Catalan language in the Balearic Islands, where Valtonyc comes from. Lyrics included: “Jorge Campos deserves a nuclear destruction bomb” or “I will pull out his artery and everything else necessary.” Valtonyc had been freed on bail until his prison entry deadline, due Thursday. But on Wednesday, he posted a cryptic tweet: “Tomorrow they will knock down the door of my house to put me in jail. For some songs. Tomorrow Spain is going to make a fool of

itself, once more. “I’m not going to make it easy for them, it’s legitimate and an obligation to disobey this fascist state. Here, no one surrenders.” Several local media in the Balearic Islands and neighbouring Catalonia said he had fled Spain, but there was no confirmation. Concerns have mounted over the past few months as several Twitter users and rappers have been judged -- and some of them jailed -- for glorifying terrorism or insulting the king for comments or lyrics. In March, Amnesty International said a Spanish law banning “glorification of terrorism” had created a “chilling” environment in which people are increasingly afraid to express alternative views or make controversial jokes. But other legal experts stress free speech has its limits. It’s “not permission to say whatever one wants,” said Antonio Torres del Moral, constitutional law specialist. (afp)
