Prince cremated; family, friends honor him at ceremony in Minnesota

CHANHASSEN - Prince’s remains have been cremated and his family and friends attended a private ceremony on Saturday to pay their respects to the late pop superstar at the studio complex where he died in a suburb of Minneapolis, a Prince spokeswoman said. Among those seen entering the Paisley Park Studios complex, where Prince lived in Chanhassen, Minnesota, were his sister, Tyka Nelson, musician and former collaborator Sheila E., his former bass player Larry Graham and model Damaris Lewis. The service came two days after Prince, whose hits included “Purple Rain” and “When Doves Cry,” was found dead in an elevator at the complex at age 57. His death shocked millions of fans around the world and prompted glowing tributes from fellow musicians and public figures, including President Barack Obama. “Prince was celebrated by a small group of his most beloved: family, friends and his musicians,

in a private, beautiful ceremony to say a loving goodbye,” Prince publicist Anna Meacham said in a statement. Meacham said Prince’s remains have been cremated and their final resting place will remain private. Plans are under way for a musical celebration of Prince, with details to be announced later, she said. On Saturday, Graham stood at a gate of Paisley Park Studios and thanked some of the hundreds of fans gathered on the lawn outside to show their admiration of Prince, a seven-time Grammy winner whose music blended rock, funk, R&B, jazz and disco. “Prince made us all better musicians and spiritually is the most important thing, but as musician

he pushed us and he made us better and we listened deeply,” Graham told the fans. Participants in the ceremony handed some fans outside gift boxes that contained items such as Princethemed apparel and a compact disc of music. An autopsy on Prince was conducted on Friday and authorities are investigating his death. Police said on Friday no signs of suicide or obvious trauma were found in Prince’s death. The local medical examiner’s office said it could take weeks before autopsy and toxicology results reveal how the groundbreaking performer died. Prince had been on a U.S. tour as recently as last week. But he was briefly hospitalized a week ago, suffering from what his representative told celebrity news website TMZ was the flu, after his plane made an emergency landing in Moline, Illinois. (rtr)

CALIFORNIA - Beyonce cemented her status as the queen of surprise releases on Saturday, releasing a completely new album and videos called “Lemonade” via a widely anticipated one-hour special on cable network HBO. During the show, which ignited social media as fans breathlessly enthused about, and debated, the program and its content, Beyoncé appeared to address long-standing rumors of trouble in her marriage with rapper Jay Z. After leveling accusations in her song lyrics about being cheated on, Beyonce made clear in the last tracks of the new album that she has decided to reconcile with him and continue in the marriage. In a preview earlier this week, the singer teased fans with a snippet promoting the show, mysteriously intoning “The past and the present merge to meet us here. What are you hiding? Why can’t you see me? You’re the love of my life.” Fans, who wondered if Saturday’s show was to be a concept video with new music from the R&B star, found out on Saturday that was pretty much the case, with chapters carrying titles that riffed on the grieving process stages such as

anger, denial and forgiveness. Before the end of the program, which featured a compilation of music videos, vignettes, vintage, home-movie style footage and poetry, Beyonce, 34, had dropped “Lemonade” onto the Tidal streaming service. The film was also available via Tidal. Videos also featured appearances by the mothers of two black men, Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin, whose shooting deaths, in Brown’s case by a Missouri police officer, have trained a spotlight on U.S. racial tensions. Fans posting on social media such as Twitter were especially engaged with speculation about the content of the show and songs as they related to Beyonce and Jay Z, making references in postings about “women scorned” and the singer “dropping” both an album and a divorce, seemingly at the same time. Beyonce previewed work from the new album just before his Super Bowl appearance this year when she debuted her single, “Formation.” Beyonce’s last album, in 2013, was also marked by a surprise release. Six-thousand miles away, on the other side of the world, is the Wat Traimit temple in Bangkok. Inside, draped in saffron robes, sits Phra Prommangkalachan – the palms of his hands pressed together, deep in prayer for the team known here in Thailand as ‘the Siamese Foxes’. He told Sky News: “Leicester City is a determined club with good intentions to win the league. “The coach has good intentions, the players too. “My prayers are part of that - I help them prosper and provide encouragement to them. “We try to manage the team by using the power of Buddhism, the power of Dhamma and the power of the Sangha.” The monk has been channelling spiritual blessings for Leicester since being brought into the fold by billionaire Thai owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha when he bought the club in 2010. “Before Mr Vichai contacted me, I’d never known anything about football. The first time I watched a football game was when I was invited to pray for the Leicester City team.” That invitation led Phra Prommangkalachan, along with a retinue of fellow Thai monks, to make the first of a number of visits to the King Power stadium to bless the pitch and offer lucky amulets to the players. They also gave out special talismans - flags bearing the clubs logo, adorned with ancient Buddhist script, believed to convey protective powers to the lucky owner. Two such talismans now hang in pride of place at his shrine in Bangkok, alongside hundreds of Buddha statues, incense, flower offerings and ceremonial elephant tusks.

Given Phra Prommangkalachan also goes by the name of Chao Khun Thongchai – a title that translates to ‘honourable bearer of the flag of victory’ – the omens should be good for the club. But with Leicester City needing eight points from their next four games to win the title, the monk is well aware it will take a lot more than luck. “The game is still the game. It’s a sport competition. “We have to understand the varieties of the system, rules and management. “The duty of the Buddhist monk like me is to encourage everyone in the team to do the right things by the rules and encourage good Karma.” For all his modesty, superstitions and a belief in the spiritual powers of the good karma that monks can deliver are widespread in Thai culture. In the grounds of the temple, worshipper Arthit Noppakaonuntasit was buying lucky amulets. Until recently, Mr Noppakaonuntasit had been a Manchester United supporter, but this season he switched his allegiance to Leicester. Road access to Kamasan tourism village in Klungkung is really apprehensive. It is seen from the crossroads of Tojan village, precisely on Jalan Mahodara. Condition of the road in the southern part of Galiran Market is regularly hit by floods. Actually it did not rain in Klungkung. But in reality, the area is submerged in water along 100 meters.

GIANYAR - The type of collection, layout and information that will be presented at the Gianyar Subak Museum began to be formulated. On Friday (Apr. 22) was held a focus group discussion (FGD) in the meeting room of the Bappeda Gianyar to get feedback regarding a number of key points in the study on the concept of the museum. “This FGD is intended to get a study on the Gianyar Subak Museum for the preparation of storyline, selection of collection, the information to be presented and layout of showcase at the Subak Museum later on,” said the Division Head of Customs and Traditions at Gianyar Cultural Office, I Wayan Sudha. According to him, subak (Balinese irrigation cooperative) is the customary law community with socio-religio-agrarian nature that has historically existed since long time ago and continues to grow as an organization of land cultivation for paddy field. Currently, the subak has been designated as a World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO so that the effort of conserving the subak should be carried out in terms of various aspects. “It is the basic consideration and the purpose of establishing subak museum located in the area of Masceti Beach,” said Sudha. In the meantime, the regent of Gianyar through the Head of the Transportation and Infocom Agency, Cokorda Gde Rai Widiarsa, said that the existence of subak museum in the future is expected to become one of the triggers in the development of cultural tourism and educational tourism in Gianyar. This happens because subak is a cultural heritage that must be preserved. “In addition, subak also poses the implementation of the Tri Hita Karana philosophy,” he explained. Aci tatebahan tradition of Bugbug village

Repelling disaster and expressing of gratitude KARANGASEM - Balinese people have many ways of expressing their gratitude for God’s blessings. In customary villages, rituals to express gratitude are passed down from generation to generation so these traditions are continuously practiced. The people of Bugbug Customary Village in Karangasem have their own special traditional ritual for expressing their gratitude for the abundant crops, known as tatebahan that was performed last Tuesday (Apr. 19). This unique ritual involves having the villagers beat one and other with banana leaf stocks until the stock is destroyed. The Tatebahan ritual is held once a year on Beteng (second three day week) of the full moon of the eleventh month of the Balinese calendar. Chief of Bugbug Customary Village, Wayan Mas Suyasa, explains that the procession of the tatebahan ritual is performed by men -both young and old. All of the ritual activities take place in the morning at the Desa and Bale Agung temple. Everyone in the village prepares the necessaries for the ritual that include of course the banana leaf stalks (that are tied together in bunches of five), but also include firewood, coconut, cassava, vegetables, beans and other things needed for preparing gibungan (communal meal). Ginungan con-

sists of cassave as a substitute for rice, vegetables, urap, nuts, and other traditional dishes. None of the foods prepared for this ritual of gratitude for the abundant crops include rice. The supplies are taken to each of the 12 customary hamlets in Bugbug village; Bancingah, Madya, Puseh, Garia, Segaa, Baruna, Dukuh Tengah, Dharma Laksana, Celuk Kangin, Celuk Kauh, Asah, and Samuh. The male villages perform ngayah (devotional work), by making all the preperations. Once everything has been prepared, the food is first presented as an offering before the community comes together to enjoy these traditional foods in a communal meal. “Interestingly, none of the food contains rice nor meat but instead only potato, vegetables and string bean lawar. This tradition seems to reflect the simplicity of our society” said Mas Suyasa. After all the villagers proceed to the Bale Agung Temple where the tatebahan will take place, the village authorities prepare the banana leaf stocks to be used in the ritual. The two men who will beat each other are given the ritual equipment and the fighting starts. The ritual fight takes place in a fair manner with each man taking his turn at beating the other to the sound of the gamelan and only the back and neck

may be struck. Before the ritual beating starts, the two men, dressed in nothing but a sarong and udeng, are sprinkled with holy water. This ritual that is performed as an expression of gratitude for the harvest also serves to avert disaster and repel disease. This year the ritual was all the more relevant as so many people on the island have been infected with dengue. It is also believed that being struck by the banana leaf stocks can cure people of disease. Also, this ritual, explained chief Suyasa, indirectly fosters a sense of brotherhood amongst the villagers. It is understood that those who are beaten with the banana leaf stock should not hold a grudge or desire revenge. “In expressing gratitude one cannot have thoughts of revenge. It does not hurt and the body that is struck will even be in good shape afterwards” said Bugbug resident, Komang Purna. In addition to the yearly tatebahan, this ritual is also carried out as part of other larger ceremonies in Bugbug Customary Village. Aci Gumang, for instance, involves people from the four villages of Bugbug, Jasri, Bebandem, and Ngis (Manggis) who have a historical relationship. Tatebahan is also conducted in Usaba Kaja and involves the communities of Datah and is meant to establish a sense of brotherhood. (kmb31)

Head of the Tabanan Forestry and Plantation Agency, Roemi Liestyowati, said on Wednesday (Apr. 20) that the closed irrigation system has been applied since 2007 but only five different subak abian have being applying this system. “Unfortunately, due to limited funds, this irrigation system cannot be applied to all the subak abian in the area”, she said. The equipment required for creating a closed irrigation system costs approximately IDR 400 million. That amount does not include the cost of surveying for water sources nor installation of the sytem, both of which are carried out by the community themselves. Roemi explained that closed irrigation systems cannot be implemented without first surveying where water culmination points are during rainy season, during the dry season and without calculating the average amount of water involved. Also, the water discharge per second must be calculated in order to know how many square kilometers can be irrigated. “Such surveying takes a year or two”, said Liestyowati. Once a survey has been conducted, a water catchment system is created to hold water gathered from rivers or other water sources. This water is then drained ot the fields using gravity and in order to save on the cost of pipe, the water supplied to each plot of land can be distributed using a hose. Water from closed irrigation systems can be used as drinking water for livestock as well as for irrigating fields during the dry season. Roemi explained that the creation of closed irrigation systems is funded by the central government, but since 2014 this funding has been suspended because the central government is focused on providing food self-sufficiency. There’s no place like home, even in the Chernobyl disaster zone

CHERNOBYL - Some people found life away from home so unbearable they decided to return, even when home was the site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster. Maria Lozbin was one of tens of thousands of people to be evacuated from their homes after the Chernobyl accident in April 1986, but returned with her family six years ago, to live off the land inside a 30 km (19 mile) exclusion zone where the risk of radiation poisoning remains. A 69-year-old with a ready laugh and a green shawl wrapped round her, Lobzin said the village to which she had been evacuated was full of drunks and drug addicts. The house into which she was moved was so shoddily constructed, with a huge crack running from the roof to the basement, that she was afraid of being killed or maimed by a falling object. “Living there was like waiting for death,” she said. Now she lives with her son and his family back in Chernobyl, in a zone that can only be reached by

crossing a checkpoint and where guides accompany curious tourists with radiation meters. By contrast, a deathly silence hangs over the nearby abandoned town of Prypyat, where a rusting fairground wheel, and a kindergarten with toys, dolls and small beds are a grim testimony to the scale and speed of the disaster. Lozbin keeps chickens, geese and ducks, grows potatoes and tomatoes, and goes foraging for mushrooms in nearby woods. “There is no radiation here. I’m not afraid of anything,” she said. “And when it’s time for me to die, it won’t happen because of radiation.” Tuesday marks the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster in then-Soviet Ukraine, caused by a botched safety test in the fourth reactor of the atomic plant that sent clouds of nuclear material across

much of Europe. The disaster and the government’s handling of it -- the evacuation order only came 36 hours after the accident -- highlighted the shortcomings of the Soviet system with its unaccountable bureaucrats and entrenched culture of secrecy. Mikhail Gorbachev has since said he considered Chernobyl one of the main nails in the coffin of the Soviet Union which eventually collapsed in 1991. The accident killed 31 right away and forced tens of thousands to flee. The final death toll of those killed by radiation-related illnesses such as cancer is subject to debate. A Greenpeace report ahead of the anniversary cites a Belarusian study estimating the total cancer deaths from the disaster at 115,000, in contrast to the World Health Organisation’s estimate of 9,000. ISLAMABAD - P akistani opposition politician Imran Khan is leading a party rally on Sunday to rail against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, seizing on the Panama Papers leak linking Sharif’s family with offshore wealth as a second chance to unseat the leader. Former cricket hero Khan, who staged protests in Islamabad for months in 2014 over alleged electoral fraud, has threatened to call new demonstrations for Sharif’s resignation, saying this month the prime minister has lost the “moral authority to rule”. Khan aides insist the government is wobbling and it is time to strike. Critics, however, say Khan may be overplaying his hand for the second time. “We demand the resignation of the prime minister on moral grounds,” said Shafqat Mahmood, a senior leader of Khan’s party. This month, leaked documents from the Mossack Fonseca law firm in Panama showed Sharif’s sons Hassan and Hussain, and daughter Maryam, owned at least three offshore holding companies registered in the British Virgin Islands. The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, which studied the papers, said those companies had engaged in at least $25 million in property and acquisition deals. US stock indexes end mixed as investors size up earnings A rebound in the price of oil and natural gas helped drive sharp gains for energy and financial companies, nudging U.S. stocks mostly higher Friday. That offset a slide in the technology sector following disappointing earnings from Microsoft, Google parent Alphabet and other big names. The Dow Jones industrial average eked out a tiny gain, while the Standard & Poor’s 500 index closed essentially flat. Both ended the week higher. BERLIN — When President Barack Obama opens the world’s largest industrial fair in the northern German city of Hannover on Sunday, he’ll be leading a delegation of American companies hoping to conquer new markets abroad. He’ll also be trying to complete one of his presidency’s main pieces of unfinished business — a trans-Atlantic trade pact. Officials in Washington and Brussels are trying to clinch key parts of the deal before the end of the year, after which a new U.S. president and election campaigns in major European countries could complicate negotiations. Proponents of the agreement — known as the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or TTIP — argue that lowering tariffs and harmonizing rules would give a muchneeded boost to businesses at a time of global economic uncertainty. Or as Obama put it when the talks launched three years ago: “New growth and jobs on both sides of the Atlantic.” But this rosy view of TTIP hasn’t caught the public’s imagination, particularly in Germany.More than 100,000 people protested in Berlin in November against the proposed pact. On Saturday, police estimated some 35,000 marched against it in Hannover, carrying placards with slogans such as “Yes We Can — Stop TTIP!” Organizers put the turnout at 90,000. Trade unions, nationalists and green groups have lobbied hard against the deal, claiming that it will drive down wages, erode consumer protection and environmental standards.

The discussions, due to resume on Monday in New York, have come under criticism for the secretive manner in which they’ve been conducted. National lawmakers are only allowed to view draft documents in special reading rooms and are forbidden from talking about the documents with experts, the media or their constituents. Proposals to create dispute settlement tribunals have also stoked fears. EU trade chief Cecilia Malmstrom envisages special investment courts that would rule in disputes between governments and companies that feel they face undue legal hurdles to their business. Critics say such courts could place the interests of corporations above those of democratically elected governments, citing a recent case where tobacco giant Philip Morris sued Uruguay over a law requiring graphic warnings on cigarette packages. Alfred de Zayas, an American law professor and U.N. human rights expert, argues that such courts are unnecessary in countries that abide by the rule of law, such as the United States or the EU’s 28 nations. Backers of the special courts say they would prevent cases from being

heard by American jurors who don’t understand the complexities of international trade law, and ensure that U.S. companies don’t face discrimination in European countries with high rates of corruption. Juergen Hardt, a German lawmaker and the government’s coordinator for trans-Atlantic cooperation, believes some of those leading the fight against TTIP “have other motivations” beyond trade. “They also want to incite antiAmerican feelings,” he said. The EU’s executive branch is trying to promote the benefits of a deal. On its website, it suggests that TTIP will boost demand for European delicacies like cheese, hams, wine, olive oil, spirits, and chocolate. “High tariffs at U.S. customs — up to 30 percent — make some of these hard for Americans to afford — and difficult for European farmers and firms to export,” it says. TTIP’s backers hope images of Obama in Europe — where his popularity remains high — will counter those of tens of thousands protesting the deal. “One of the main misunderstandings is that we’d be doing the Americans a big favor,” said Hardt. “As an export nation, where more jobs depend on export than in any other country, Germany has the greatest interest in free trade. So I think the Americans would be doing us more of a favor agreeing to such a pact than the other way around.”(ap)

Thousands flee their flooded homes in Karawang KARAWANG - Thousands of people fled their flooded homes in five villages in Karawang district, West Java, on Friday. “The floods struck on Thursday (April 21). Some 1,053 residents or 438 families evacuated to higher ground after the flood water inundated their houses,” secretary of the Karawang District Disaster Mitigation Board (BPBD) Supriatna said. The evacuees hail from the five villages of Karangligar, Parungsari, Tanjungmekar, Karawang Kulon and Tanjungpura. remote villages under electrification. Of these, 2,519 villages are still outside the pale of the electric grid. “You can imagine that such off-the-grid villages would have remained underdeveloped, with little access to any sources of information and a low standard of life,” he said.

The electricity infrastructure in these regions will have to be built through different approaches, such as decentralization and island-based infrastructure as well as by harnessing the renewable energy potential there. The government estimated that at least Rp100 trillion of investment is needed to develop infrastructure under this program, 80 percent of

Death toll from Ecuador earthquake surpasses 650 QUITO - The death toll from Ecuador’s devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake last week has risen to 654 people, the country’s emergency management authority said on Saturday. Last Saturday’s quake, the worst in nearly seven decades, injured around 16,600 people and left 58 missing along the country’s ravaged Pacific coast. One hundred and thirteen people were rescued from damaged buildings. “These have been sad days for the homeland,” President Rafael Correa said during his weekly television broadcast earlier on Saturday. “The country is in crisis.” Several strong tremors and more than 700 aftershocks have continued to shake the country since the major quake, sparking momentary panic but little additional damage. Tremors are expected to continue for several weeks. With close to 7,000 buildings destroyed, more than 25,000 people were living in shelters. Some 14,000 security personnel were keeping order in quake-hit areas, with only sporadic looting reported. Survivors in the quake zone were receiving food, water and medicine from the government and scores of foreign aid workers, although Correa has acknowledged that bad roads delayed aid reaching some communities. Correa’s leftist government, facing mammoth rebuilding at a time of greatly reduced oil revenues for the OPEC country, has said it would temporarily increase some taxes, offer assets for sale and possibly issue bonds abroad to fund reconstruction. Congress will begin debate on the tax proposal on Tuesday. Correa has estimated damage at $2 billion to $3 bi llion. Lower oil revenue has already left the country of 16 million people facing near-zero growth and lower investment. The country’s private banking association said on Saturday its member banks would defer payments on credit cards, loans and mortgages for clients in the quake zone for three months, to help reconstruction efforts. SEOUL - North Korea said on Sunday a submarine-launched ballistic missile test it conducted under the supervision of leader Kim Jong Un had been a “great success” that provided “one more means for powerful nuclear attack”. The launch is the latest in a recent string of North Korean demonstrations of military might that began in January with its fourth nuclear test and included the launch of a long-range rocket the next month. The tests have increased tension on the Korean peninsula, angered ally China and triggered new U.N. sanctions. Analysts say the tests could be part of a bid by Kim to bolster his position in the run-up to a rare ruling party congress in May. Concern has been growing that North Korea could soon conduct another nuclear test. North Korea fired the missile from a submarine off its east coast on Saturday and it flew for about 30 km (18 miles), a South Korean Defence Ministry official said late on Saturday. South Korea was trying to determine whether the launch may

have been a failure, for unspecified reasons, the official said. The North’s official news agency KCNA said the test-firing was “another great success,” without disclosing the date and place of the launch, which it said was guided by leader Kim. “The successful test-fire would help remarkably bolster the underwater operational capability of the KPA navy, he said, adding that it is now capable of hitting the heads of the South Korean puppet forces and the U.S. imperialists any time as it pleases,” it said, citing Kim. INDIANA - Frenchman Ian Mahinmi has spent most of his NBA career in the shadows, relatively speaking, but on Saturday he enjoyed a turn in the spotlight. But he played 33 minutes in the home win on Saturday, “It’s not the best right now,” Mihinmi said when asked about his back. “There are times where I feel 100 percent, there are times less. I’m fine.” Mahinmi was born in Roeun in northern France to immigrant parents, his father from Benin and mother from Jamaica. He was chosen 28th overall in the 2005 NBA draft by the San Antonio Spurs, where he played only 32 games before moving to the Dallas Mavericks in 2010. Suarez nets 4 more for Barca, Bale leads Madrid comeback

Martial scores late to send Man United into FA Cup final

BARCELONA — Luis Suarez continued his goal splurge by scoring four times to help Barcelona stay atop the Spanish league on Saturday, while Real Madrid needed a stellar performance from Gareth Bale to remain in the title hunt. Suarez scored his eighth goal in four days to fuel a 6-0 rout of Sporting Gijon, following another four-goal outing in an 8-0 destruction of Deportivo La Coruna on Wednesday. The Spanish league said Suarez was the first player to ever score four goals in back-to-back matches. While Bale managed only half as many, his two goals were critical to lead a 3-2 fightback at Rayo Vallecano in a match that Madrid entered without Cristiano Ronaldo and finished without Karim Benzema due to leg injuries. Barcelona stayed level on points with Atletico Madrid, which ground out another no-nonsense win, 1-0 over Malaga following the sending off of coach Diego Simeone at halftime. Madrid remained a point behind in third place with three rounds left. Barcelona holds tiebreakers against both challengers and will get more rest while Atletico and Madrid appear in the Champions League semifinals. With back-to-back wins by a combined score of 14-0, Barcelona has reestablished its command of a competition it looked set to win easily before a stunning run of four rounds without a win threw the race open. “We have turned around a very negative dynamic,” Barcelona manager Luis Enrique said. “Of the three title candidates, we are in the best position, but we have no margin for error.” Suarez’s goals at Camp Nou, which all came in the second half and twice from the penalty spot, took him to the top of the league scorers’ list with 34, moving past Ronaldo’s 31.

Scolari feels pressure in China Since Guangzhou Evergrande started the new wave of spending in Chinese soccer in 2010, the club has enjoyed constant success - until now. The title-holders were last week dumped out of the Asian Champions League with a game still remaining in the group stage. Guangzhou has spent over $200 million on players and coaches in the past five years including almost $50 million in January on Colombian striker Jackson Martinez from Atletico Madrid. The club has not only won the past five Chinese Super League titles, it has, under World Cup winning managers Marcello Lippi and Luiz Felipe Scolari, won two of the past three continental crowns. Two points from the first four group games this season meant that

the 2-0 midweek win at South Korea’s Pohang Steelers could not prevent the early exit. For the first time since arriving in China in June 2015, Scolari finds himself under pressure from the media. “It has been a difficult week for us,” Scolari admitted on Saturday. “We obviously had ambitions in Asia but now we have to focus on winning the Chinese Super League. The standard is getting higher and we face a challenge every week.” Guangzhou is going well in the domestic league and captain and two-time Asian Player of the Year Zheng Zhi has wants to ensure that Guangzhou qualifies for next year’s Champions League. “Unfortunately, we failed to get to the second round for many reasons,” said Zheng. “We now have to face

the reality and start thinking about the league and FA Cup. We want to be champions and then get into Asia once again.” Guangzhou has long identified its stature with Asian success. In its four previous appearances, the club reached the semifinal and quarterfinal as well as its two wins. LONDON — Anthony Martial darted through the Everton defense, slotted in Manchester United’s winner and continued his run past the Wembley Stadium stewards before launching himself into the crowd. It was a flash of pure elation after being so cool under pressure to score in the third minute of stoppage time and send United into its first FA Cup final in nine years with a 2-1 victory over Everton. Martial created Marouane Fellaini’s first-half opener but that was canceled out by Chris Smalling’s own goal and the semi final was heading to extra time. Martial’s match-winning moment demonstrated why United was willing to commit up to 80 million euros ($90 million) last year on acquiring a largely unproven teenager who is now 20 and a France international forward. “When you see the joy in the eyes of the players, that is fantastic to see,” United manager Louis van Gaal said. Winning soccer’s oldest knockout competition could yet provide Van Gaal with a glorious end to another underwhelming season. The Dutchman could deliver on May 21 the club’s first major trophy since Alex Ferguson retired. United faces either Crystal Palace or Watford, who meet on Sunday. Ferguson’s last act as United manager after 26 years was to deliver a 20th English title but the team has not come close to No. 21 since then — first under David Moyes and for the last two years with Van Gaal at the helm. United is struggling even to finish in the top four and secure lucrative Champions League qualification, with Arsenal four points ahead in fourth place.
