Santana reunites with ex-bandmate, now homeless

OAKLAND, California — A news reporter for a San Francisco television station has reunited rock guitarist Carolos Santana with a former bandmate he hadn’t seen in decades and who now lives on the streets of Oakland.

Reporter Stanley Roberts ran into percussionist Marcus “The Magnificent” Malone while working on a story about illegal dumping last week, KRON-TV in San Francisco reported.

Although he initially was skeptical of the homeless man’s claim that the Santana Blues Band got its start in his mother’s garage in the late 1960s, Roberts checked out the story and confirmed it. And on Friday, he took Santana for a surprise visit to the camper where Malone has been staying.

“You don’t know how afraid I am to let you see me,” Malone said softly after he and the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer embraced. “We cherish you,” Santana replied. “It’s an honor to be in

your presence.”

Santana has credited Malone with being an important influence on his AfroLatin sound, according to former Rolling Stone magazine writer Ben Fong-Torres’ book “Not Fade Away: A Backstage Ticket to 20 Years of Rock & Roll.”

Malone played congas on Santana’s eponymous first album, but left the band in 1969 shortly before its seminal performance at Woodstock when he was imprisoned for manslaughter, according to Fong-Torres.

WEST MONROE, Louisiana — “Faith. Family. Ducks.” It’s the unofficial motto for the family featured in the TV reality show Duck Dynasty and that homespun philosophy permeates nearly everything in this small north Louisiana town. It’s perhaps most on display at the White’s Ferry Road Church of Christ in West Monroe, where the Robertson family prays and preaches most Sunday mornings.

The family — including patriarch Phil Robertson, who ignited a controversy last week when he told a magazine reporter that gays are sinners and AfricanAmericans were happy under Jim Crow laws — were in a front pew this past Sunday. And standing by beliefs they say are deeply rooted in their reading of the Bible.

The rest of the flock, decked out in Duck Dynasty hats and bandannas, stood by the family and the sentiments Phil Robertson expressed. Alan, Robertson’s eldest son, helped deliver a Christmasthemed sermon. He started off by refer-

ring to last week’s controversy. “Hope your week went well,” he dead-panned.

“Ours was kinda’ slow.”

He was referring, of course, to the show’s forced hiatus: TV network A&E suspended broadcasts last week after Phil’s remarks about blacks and gays caused a public uproar.

Neighborhood head of Graha Panji Asri, Roy, said that puddles frequently occurred in the residential area during the rainy season. It was feared to be a nest of mosquito transmitting dengue. DENPASAR - The pursuit against the murder culprit of a Bali Police cop, I Putu Suarsa, by a joint team of Bali Police, Denpasar Metro Police and South Denpasar Police was not in vain. The murderer named M. Subahan, 35, could be arrested in a chicken coop at Kumuk Leleng hamlet, Sebaman village, Kalisat subdistrict, Jember, East Java, Sunday (Dec 22) at 5:45 a.m. local time.

After the arrest, the suspect was immediately taken to Denpasar Metro Police.

Chief of Denpasar Metro Police, Djoko Hariutomo, said the arrest of the cop murderer was due to the hard work of the joint team. After the incident, a number of personnel were immediately assigned to Jember to track the whereabouts of the suspect.

“The suspect was arrested while he was asleep in the chicken coop. He could not move when arrested,” explained Chief Djoko Hariutomo on Sunday while saying the suspect arrived at 5:00 p.m.

After murdering the victim, the suspect immediately fled to Jember by public transportation to Ubung terminal and then boarded a bus to Jember. When he was a fugitive of police, the suspect was hiding in Jember. “He (the suspect) did not go anywhere but hid in Jember. Fortunately, members of the joint team could catch him,” he told media crews on Sunday.

Previously, police had rummage through the location alleged to be-

come the hideaway of the suspect in Jember. However, based on tracking of police, the last position of the suspect was known in the chicken coop of Kyai Faktur. Even, the suspect worked there to provide chicken feed.

“At the moment, the suspect is still being examined. His case is still being developed in order to immediately investigate it,” he explained.

The development of the case was conducted to determine if there were other culprits who participated in assisting and protecting when he was at large. Initially, the victim was about to collect a debt to the suspect. It was unknown what happened then, they were involved in physical fights and squabbles to end up with hacking.

Finally, the victim was killed by the suspect. After hacking the victim, the suspect immediately fled to Jember while his wife and son of four days old were left. (kmb21)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Congress eyes spy review in surveillance logjam WASHINGTON — A White House review of U.S. surveillance programs has given Congress some temporary political cover after lawmakers failed this year to overhaul spy operations, and could break the legislative snarl that followed months of global outrage over privacy intrusions.

Since last summer, a deeply divided Congress has tussled over competing plans to protect Americans’ privacy rights by limiting National Security Agency powers to track terrorists.

But a presidential advisory panel’s 46 tough recommendations, released this past week by the White House, offer a way ahead for lawmakers who face the voters next fall. They can point to the suggestions to save face politically with security-minded constituents if surveillance is scaled back aggressively.

“The American public is expressing an opinion that it feels safer, and we don’t need as many of these intrusive-sounding programs as we needed a decade ago,” said Tom Newcomb, a former CIA officer and lawyer who served as a counterterrorism adviser to President George W. Bush.

“The political risk, as I see it, is all of this changes if we get a terrorist attack or a significant attempt that scares us again,” said Newcomb, who’s now a criminal justice and political science professor at Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio. “And then Congress, which has generally taken it upon itself to assign blame, will blame those who reformed.”

At the least, the review finally could prod Congress into defining the extent to which the U.S. should spy on its citizens and foreign allies. The recommendations “reaffirm what many of my colleagues and I have been saying since June — the NSA has gone too far,” said Republican Rep. James F. Sensenbrenner.

The review group adopted the central part of legislation that he is pushing — barring the NSA from its massive daily sweep of U.S. telephone records. Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden said he found a lot in the report “for a reformer to like.”

Apart from penjor, the Christians also began preparing some facilities of reception. Christmas trees apparently had started to be decorated as seen in the St. Maria Ratu Fosari Gianyar Catholic Church, Tedung area, Abianbase village, Gianyar. Some tents had been installed in the church courtyard. A pair of penjor ornament indicating a very thick acculturation jazzed up the moment of Christmas celebration this year. In the northern part of the church courtyard were seen police officers preparing security post.

DENPASAR - War against plastic waste is now more intensely carried out in the area of Mount Batur Kintamani, Bangli.

Jero Gede added that residents at Batur village and 15 other villages listed as geopark area undertook the plastic waste collection once a month and could collect up to 2

tons of plastic waste. “If disposed to forest, it can harm. If set it to fire, the ash of plastic waste will be hazardous because the content of chemical substance of the plastic waste is high,” he said when met at Prapan Temple at Batur.

Creating the habit of clean living to the people was not easy, but by degrees the effort to make the waste-free Bangli could be realized. However, the real action with the support of the Bali government was highly needed, so that all components could work together to create the clean environment of Bangli. “Enthusiasm of the community is extraordinary, but the constraint lies in provincial government. Formerly, it promised two waste trucks for each village, but so far it has not been realized,” he complained.

Nevertheless, Jero Gede was still enthusiastic to continuously express the importance of a healthy environment for the entire community. He still expected the related institutions to seriously create Bangli into a clean and plastic waste-free region. “I’m not desperate to expect the officials in order they can realize what people ask after collecting the plastic waste such as a truck to transport it where it should be because it reaches several tons not kilograms,” he affirmed. AMLAPURA - Related to Mother’s Day celebration on Sunday (Dec 22), Duda Timur village, Selat, Karangasem, held a tug of war for men and women group from nine hamlets. In addition to a tug of war, the event was also jazzed up with pillow fight for student category.

Tug of war was held at an unusual place, namely in the muddy rice field. By all means, it drew the attention of thousands of people. The spectators were not only from local village, but also from neighboring villages. Cheers and laughter colored the atmosphere when the groups of men and representatives of housewife group

According to the Head of Denpasar Transportation Agency, I Gede Astika, Jalan Sudirman had been designated as an area of safety and legal compliance zone since Sunday (Dec 22). It was said the road users were strictly prohibited to make violations, including violation of the existing signs. All this time, for instance, motorcycle riders seemed reluctant to pass through the prepared lane and obeyed the rules requiring the use of facility. If they were still reckless to commit the violation, the riders would be dealt firmly.

“The area of Jalan Sudirman have owned special lane for motorcycles. We ask all motorcycle riders to obey the signs and use the facilities provided if they do not want to be dealt with firmly by the authorities,” said Astika warned.

Astika added the affirmative action aimed to provide learning for the community in order to continue to adhere to and obey the traffic rules. Sustiawan added the stipulation of Jalan Sudirman as a pilot project for the implementation of the safety and legal compliance zone had owned supporting facilities. SEMARAPURA - Ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebration, the security of Bali would be enhanced through Candle Operation 2013. Dhaka - Bangladesh security forces have arrested 37 Chinese and Taiwanese nationals after raiding an illegal Internet telephone operation they were allegedly running in an upscale Dhaka neighbourhood, an official said Monday. Officers from the elite Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) raided the apartment block late on Sunday and arrested the foreigners over the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) operation offering cheap international calls, RAB spokesman Habibur Rahman said.

“They rented the building to run illegal VoIP business. The foreigners include seven women. Thirty-two of them are Taiwanese and the rest Chinese. They’ll be handed over to a police station today,” he told AFP. “We’ve examined their papers. They don’t have any work permit to operate in Bangladesh,” he added.

The foreigners -- most aged in their twenties and thirties -- were paraded before local media along with seized telecoms equipment late on Sunday after the raid in capital’s Uttara district.

Phone companies in Bangladesh offering international calls -- including through VoIP services -- must obtain a licence from the nation’s telecoms regulator, ensuring large revenues for the government.

The RAB has busted dozens of illegal VoIP businesses in the past.

The VoIP business has been booming in the country thanks to the more than 10 million Bangladeshis who live and work overseas.

CONCORD, N.H. — After the first full day of winter brought everything from balmy temperatures along the Mid-Atlantic to snow in the Midwest and ice, snow and flooding in the Great Lakes, some people could be left in the dark for Christmas. Much of the foul weather that occurred Sunday has lessened or disappeared entirely, but the harsh aftereffects were expected to linger.

Brad Hoving, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, Mich., said most people were without power in some counties between Grand Rapids and Lansing, Mich.

Some may not have electricity until Wednesday or even Thursday, he said. “It’s a big deal,” Hoving said. “It’s Christmas and we’ve just had a major ice storm,” with trees toppling over and icecovered power lines.

By late Sunday, ice and snow had knocked out power to 440,000 homes and businesses in Michigan, upstate New York and northern New England — about half of whom had their power back by early Monday. The storm also left more than 400,000 people without electricity in eastern Canada.

At least nine deaths in the U.S. were blamed on the storm, including five people killed in flooding in Kentucky and a woman who died after a tornado with winds of 130 mph struck in Arkansas.

Five people were killed in Canada in highway accidents related to the storm.

By late Sunday, nearly 700 flights nationwide had been canceled and about 7,200 were delayed, according to aviation tracking website FlightAware.com.

But flights were mostly running on schedule on Monday morning. It is a mixture of flower, yellow rice and perforated coin.

“Sekar ura is the epitome of farewell expression to the deceased and those who are still alive. Flowers in the sekar ura represents sincerity to release the deceased who will go to the afterlife realm,” said Wiana.

In a memukur or nyekah ritual, the astral body of people who are given a ritual is symbolized by human figure made of flowers or puspa lingga. It was described in the Ligya and Yama Purwana Tattva palm-leaf manuscript.

MOSCOW - Russia has sent 25 armored trucks and 50 other vehicles to Syria to help transport toxins that are to be destroyed under an international agreement to rid the nation of its chemical arsenal, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Monday. In a report to President Vladimir Putin, Shoigu said Russian aircraft delivered 50 Kamaz trucks and 25 Ural armored trucks to the Syrian port city of Latakia on December 18-20 along with other equipment, staterun news agency RIA reported.

“The Defence Ministry has very swiftly implemented actions to deliver to Syria equipment and materiel to provide for the removal of Syrian chemical weapons and their destruction,” Shoigu was quoted as saying. Syria has agreed to abandon it chemical weapons under a deal proposed by Russia to avert potential U.S. military action after a deadly August 21 sarin gas attack the United States blamed on President Bashar al-Assad’s government.

Damascus agreed to transport the “most critical” chemicals, including around 20 tons of mustard nerve agent, out of the northern port of Latakia by December 31 to be safely destroyed abroad away from the war zone.

Western powers has baulked at Syria’s request for military transport equipment to transport chemical weapons material to Latakia because of concerns it could be used to fight Assad’s opponents in the conflict or kill civilians.

Russia has been a major seller of conventional weapons to Syria and has given Assad crucial support during the conflict, blocking attempts to punish with sanctions and saying his exit must not be a precondition for a peace process.

Syrian government forces took control of a key highway connecting Damascus to the coast earlier this month, but the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has voiced concern the deadline could be missed.

Sydney - Militant anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd on Monday dismissed as a “sham” Australian government plans to track Japan’s annual whale hunt by air instead of by sea, saying it was a toothless and “cowardly” response.

Australia on Sunday announced an aerial Customs and Border Protection mission to the Southern Ocean as a showdown looms between Japan’s whaling fleet and Sea Shepherd activists, saying it would send a message to both sides that the world was watching.

Environment Minister Greg Hunt had first promised to send a government ship to tail the warring groups but said the Airbus A319 would increase the surveillance mission’s reach and effectiveness.

Sea Shepherd criticised the move, with Australian chairman Bob Brown describing it as a “pretty, cowardly” backdown by the conservative government in a bid to appease Japan due to ongoing free trade negotiations.

“They’ll fly over and look from a great height. What are they going to do if something’s going wrong down there? Where are they going to send a vessel from? Because those planes are not going to be able to intervene,” Brown told reporters. “It’s a sham operation, this plane.”

Instead of patrolling the southern fisheries, Brown said the government’s custom-built Antarctic vessel ACV Ocean Protector was on border patrol duties between Australia and Indonesia as part of a military-led crackdown on people-smuggling. “It is dangerous down there, we’ve got a violent Japanese whaling fleet on the way with grenade-tipped harpoons and it is dangerous to get in the way of that and uphold the law,” he said.

Brown said Sea Shepherd’s fleet had “three good days sailing” since departing Australia last week and they would beat the Japanese harpooners to the Southern Ocean. “We’ll be there when they arrive,” he said.

Man throws 3-year-old son, himself off NYC roof Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK - A man involved in a custody dispute who was supposed to turn his 3-year-old son over to the boy’s mother instead threw the child off the roof of a 52-story Manhattan apartment building before jumping to his death, police said. Officers responding to an emergency call reporting two jumpers from the building on the Upper West Side around noon Sunday found Dmitriy Kanarikov, 35, and the boy on the lower rooftops of two separate nearby buildings.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his son, Kirill Kanarikov, was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said. A witness said the boy was wearing Christmas pajamas.

The boy’s mother had custody of the child and the father, who had visitation rights, was supposed to hand the boy over to the mother at a police precinct Sunday afternoon, authorities said. Luis Ortiz told the New York Post that he was at the hospital when paramedics rushed the boy there and that they were pumping his chest and working on him. “You could tell he was slipping away. They said the father was up there, but they didn’t bring anyone else in. It was just heartbreaking. I have two kids of my own. They tried to do the best they could,” Ortiz told the newspaper. Ortiz told the New York Daily News that the tot was dressed in Christmas pajamas.

Authorities said the father did not live in the building listed as South Park Tower, which is a short distance away from Columbus Circle and Lincoln Center. Police investigating the deaths left the building in the mid-afternoon to photograph a gray Lexus RX350 parked nearby.

It’s the second time this year that a parent and child have been involved in a fatal plunge from a New York apartment building. In March, a woman clutching her baby son in her arms plunged eight stories out of a Harlem apartment window to her death, but the 10-month-old survived. Authorities found a suicide note in her home.

INDONESIA President calls for MP3EI projects implementation on time

CILEGON - President Yudhoyono has urged related ministers to ensure that the groundbreaking and inauguration of projects related to the Masterplan for Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesia’s Economic Development (MP3EI) be implemented on time as planned.

“I ask the coordinating minister for economy and other related ministers to make sure that the groundbreaking of all MP3EI related projects in 2014 be implemented on time,” noted the president in Cilegon, Banten Province, on Monday.

grated steel factory of PT Krakatau Posco in Cilegon, the head of state reinstated that the other MP3EI projects, which have been under construction for two years, should be completed on time as planned.

The integrated steel factory of PT Krakatau Posco is one of the

MP3EI projects, others being the expansion of Tanjung Priok port and Soekarno-Hatta airport in Jakarta, the development of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and other infrastructural developments.

“We want our economy to grow strong and sustainable through the MP3EI program until

2025, and this integrated steel factory is part of the development in the industrial cluster of Java Island,” stated the president.

PT Krakatau Posco is a joint venture between Posco and PT Krakatau Steel, which own 70 percent and 30 percent stake respectively. This project, worth US$6 billion, is the biggest investment project in Indonesia.

The president noted that strong cooperation between Krakatau Posco and Krakatau Steel is a

long term investment to make Indonesia a strong industrial nation.

“Along with national industrial progress, the current steel supply is also lacking and thus the government continues to encourage Krakatau Steel to become a reliable sheet steel producer,” pointed out the president.

He expressed hope that PT Krakatau Posco will increase the capacity of steel produce to meet the national demand of steel.

Indonesia sees better investment prospects The Indonesian government has predicted that the country’s investment target, set at Rp390 trillion this year, could be achieved, expressing optimism that interest by foreign investors in Indonesia will increase in 2014.

Deputy Finance Minister Mahendra Sirgar said he was optimistic that the 2013 investment target of Rp390 trillion will be achieved, regardless that the country’s economic growth was slowing. “If we look at the figure, we can achieve it. I can see that the investment target at Rp390 trillion for the entire year of 2013 can be realized,” Mahendra said during a recent seminar.

In the meantime, head of the Finance Ministry’s Macro Economic Study Center, Luky Alfirman, said on Thursday that interest by foreign businesses in investing capital in Indonesia would increase in 2014.

“Indonesia will remain a main target for investments by foreign investors,” Luky Alfirman said.

He added that the strong interest by foreign investors to make investments in Indonesia was inseparable from the country’s promising potential and domestic economic growth, which could exceed five percent.

“Besides that, Indonesia has investment opportunities which are better than those found in other countries,” Alfirman said.

Deputy Finance Minister Mahendra said that investment in the first semester of 2013, based on the Capital Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) data, stood at Rp192.8 trillion.

Therefore, he was optimistic that the investment target of Rp390 trillion in 2013 would be reached.

However, Mahendra said, he still has to see the development of economic growth in 2014 in order to forecast whether the investment target set at Rp506 trillion was achievable. Yet, Mahendra, who is also the head of the BKPM, said that the growth of investment in 2014 could increase by 15 percent, even through economic growth would still face constraints.

“I believe the investment growth will reach 15 percent in 2014. But I will do my best to exceed 15 percent,” the BKPM chief said on Dec. 4.

Mahendra noted that the increase in investment could be boosted by investment in downstream industries or in the mineral resources processing industry, in line with the law on mineral and coal development. The law is expected to be put into effect next year. He also expressed hope that domestic investment next year will reach 40 percent of total investment values in Indonesia, or almost the same as the values of foreign investment, which always dominated portfolio investments.

“We hope domestic investment in 2014 would reach 40 percent of total investment values. Domestic investment currently accounts for

only one third of the total investment,” he said.

Like the BPKM, HSBC Indonesia has also predicted that Indonesia will still see positive investment growth in 2014, despite the discouraging trend of an economic slowdown.

Investment would continue to grow because of proper handling of inflation and the trade balance by the government, HSBC Indonesia Managing Director of Global Markets, Ali Setiawan, said during a seminar last month entitled “HSBC Global Economic Outlook 2014”.

“Bank Indonesia (the central bank) has taken a series of steps and the government has been consistent in its policy in dealing with structural problems and redressing the trade balance,” Ali said. He said Japan still places Indonesia on top of its investment destination list. “Indonesia has done a good job in the eye of the international community. Indonesia is the most interesting, not only for Japanese investors. European and US investors also are similarly interested,” he said.

The investment market is still large in Indonesia, he added, citing Java remaining open for new investments, such as in infrastructure.

“In the infrastructure sector we are still lagging behind neighboring countries. Fundamentally, the Indonesian economy is still growing, therefore, there was cause for much concern,” he said.

The government, however, needs to be more transparent and consistent in carrying out its policies, he emphasised.

PYONGYANG, North Korea — Dennis Rodman may not get to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on his latest visit to the country, but he said that won’t stop him from coming back on Kim’s birthday next month to hold an exhibition game with other former basketball stars.

On the night before he was due to leave Pyongyang, Rodman told The Associated Press on Sunday that he had not yet had a meeting with Kim. The flamboyant Hall of Famer said that he didn’t expect to meet the leader every time he comes to North Korea, and that his current trip was for training North Korean basketball players who will take part in the match Rodman is organizing for Kim’s birthday on Jan. 8.

“I’m not just coming over here to meet the leader,” Rodman said. “I came over here to meet the basketball team, to prepare a great game for the leader for his birthday. And people need to understand that it’s not important for me to meet him every time I come over because he has another greater job to do for his country, and I respect that, but

this trip was basically to come over to train the team, so we can have a great, great, game.”

Rodman’s visit comes just after the dramatic purge and execution of Kim’s once-powerful uncle, which has sparked speculation among some foreign analysts over how stable Kim’s regime is. But officials here say that there is no instability and that Kim remains firmly in control.

Rodman wants to bring 12 former NBA stars to Pyongyang for the exhibition, but has acknowledged that some of the Americans have been reluctant to come. He has held tryouts for the North Korean team during his visit, which began Thursday. He has said he expects to announce the U.S. roster soon, and that he is planning another game in June.

Rodman and Kim have struck up an unlikely friendship since the former NBA star traveled to the secretive state for the first time in February with the Harlem Globetrotters for an HBO series produced by New York-based VICE television. Rodman is the highestprofile American to meet Kim since the leader inherited power from his father in late 2011.

PSG draws 2-2 with Lille in French league

PARIS — Paris Saint-Germain drew 2-2 with Lille on Sunday in the French league to extend its lead to three points at the halfway stage. Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic gave PSG the lead in the 36th minute with a 25-yard free kick that took a deflection off the Lille wall. But Lille captain Rio Mavuba pounced on a low cross from Salomon Kalou to level with a first-time effort in the 44th before Kalou converted a penalty in the 53rd.

The hosts equalized with an own goal from Lille centerback Marko Basa in the 72nd. “The boys had an outstanding game and they showed their season is no fluke,” Lille coach Rene Girard said. “For us, it’s like a victory.”

Lille stayed in third place, one point behind Monaco. Also, Marseille rallied from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 with Bordeaux and Lyon conceded a 2-2 draw at Lorient in the last minute of stoppage time.

Tensions sometimes flared in a match pitting the most prolific offense in the league, PSG, against the tightest defense, Lille. Mavuba and Ibrahimovic were booked for shoving each other in the 40th.

PSG draws 2-2 with Lille in French league

PARIS — Paris Saint-Germain drew 2-2 with Lille on Sunday in the French league to extend its lead to three points at the halfway stage. Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic gave PSG the lead in the 36th minute with a 25-yard free kick that took a deflection off the Lille wall. But Lille captain Rio Mavuba pounced on a low cross from Salomon Kalou to level with a first-time effort in the 44th before Kalou converted a penalty in the 53rd.

The hosts equalized with an own goal from Lille centerback Marko Basa in the 72nd. “The boys had an outstanding game and they showed their season is no fluke,” Lille coach Rene Girard said. “For us, it’s like a victory.”

Lille stayed in third place, one point behind Monaco. Also, Marseille rallied from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 with Bordeaux and Lyon conceded a 2-2 draw at Lorient in the last minute of stoppage time.

PYONGYANG, North Korea — Dennis Rodman may not get to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on his latest visit to the country, but he said that won’t stop him from coming back on Kim’s birthday next month to hold an exhibition game with other former basketball stars.

On the night before he was due to leave Pyongyang, Rodman told The Associated Press on Sunday that he had not yet had a meeting with Kim. The flamboyant Hall of Famer said that he didn’t expect to meet the leader every time he comes to North Korea, and that his current trip was for training North Korean basketball players who will take part in the match Rodman is organizing for Kim’s birthday on Jan. 8.

“I’m not just coming over here to meet the leader,” Rodman said. “I came over here to meet the basketball team, to prepare a great game for the leader for his birthday. And people need to understand that it’s not important for me to meet him every time I come over because he has another greater job to do for his country, and I respect that, but

this trip was basically to come over to train the team, so we can have a great, great, game.”

Rodman’s visit comes just after the dramatic purge and execution of Kim’s once-powerful uncle, which has sparked speculation among some foreign analysts over how stable Kim’s regime is. But officials here say that there is no instability and that Kim remains firmly in control.

Rodman wants to bring 12 former NBA stars to Pyongyang for the exhibition, but has acknowledged that some of the Americans have been reluctant to come. He has held tryouts for the North Korean team during his visit, which began Thursday. He has said he expects to announce the U.S. roster soon, and that he is planning another game in June.

Rodman and Kim have struck up an unlikely friendship since the former NBA star traveled to the secretive state for the first time in February with the Harlem Globetrotters for an HBO series produced by New York-based VICE television. Rodman is the highestprofile American to meet Kim since the leader inherited power from his father in late 2011.

Russia sends armored trucks to Syria to transport chemical arms Reuters

MOSCOW - Russia has sent 25 armored trucks and 50 other vehicles to Syria to help transport toxins that are to be destroyed under an international agreement to rid the nation of its chemical arsenal, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Monday. In a report to President Vladimir Putin, Shoigu said Russian aircraft delivered 50 Kamaz trucks and 25 Ural armored trucks to the Syrian port city of Latakia on December 18-20 along with other equipment, staterun news agency RIA reported.

“The Defence Ministry has very swiftly implemented actions to deliver to Syria equipment and materiel to provide for the removal of Syrian chemical weapons and their destruction,” Shoigu was quoted as saying. Syria has agreed to abandon it chemical weapons under a deal proposed by Russia to avert potential U.S. military action after a deadly August 21 sarin gas attack the United States blamed on President Bashar al-Assad’s government.

Damascus agreed to transport the “most critical” chemicals, including around 20 tons of mustard nerve agent, out of the northern port of Latakia by December 31 to be safely destroyed abroad away from the war zone.

Western powers has baulked at Syria’s request for military transport equipment to transport chemical weapons material to Latakia because of concerns it could be used to fight Assad’s opponents in the conflict or kill civilians.

Russia has been a major seller of conventional weapons to Syria and has given Assad crucial support during the conflict, blocking attempts to punish with sanctions and saying his exit must not be a precondition for a peace process.

Syrian government forces took control of a key highway connecting Damascus to the coast earlier this month, but the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has voiced concern the deadline could be missed.

Sydney - Militant anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd on Monday dismissed as a “sham” Australian government plans to track Japan’s annual whale hunt by air instead of by sea, saying it was a toothless and “cowardly” response.

Australia on Sunday announced an aerial Customs and Border Protection mission to the Southern Ocean as a showdown looms between Japan’s whaling fleet and Sea Shepherd activists, saying it would send a message to both sides that the world was watching.

Environment Minister Greg Hunt had first promised to send a government ship to tail the warring groups but said the Airbus A319 would increase the surveillance mission’s reach and effectiveness.

Sea Shepherd criticised the move, with Australian chairman Bob Brown describing it as a “pretty, cowardly” backdown by the conservative government in a bid to appease Japan due to ongoing free trade negotiations.

“They’ll fly over and look from a great height. What are they going to do if something’s going wrong down there? Where are they going to send a vessel from? Because those planes are not going to be able to intervene,” Brown told reporters. “It’s a sham operation, this plane.”

Instead of patrolling the southern fisheries, Brown said the government’s custom-built Antarctic vessel ACV Ocean Protector was on border patrol duties between Australia and Indonesia as part of a military-led crackdown on people-smuggling. “It is dangerous down there, we’ve got a violent Japanese whaling fleet on the way with grenade-tipped harpoons and it is dangerous to get in the way of that and uphold the law,” he said.

Brown said Sea Shepherd’s fleet had “three good days sailing” since departing Australia last week and they would beat the Japanese harpooners to the Southern Ocean. “We’ll be there when they arrive,” he said.

“Now Greg Hunt has said there will be a plane overhead sometime in January and February -- the whaling fleet’s going to be there before new year and we warned the government of this. “This surveillance operation should be there from the outset, (instead) it’s going to fail from the outset.”

High-seas clashes between the Japanese and Sea Shepherd are common, with the activists regularly pelting the whaling ships with stink bombs, attempting to foul propellers and manoeuvring their vessels between harpoons and whales. Both sides claim to have been rammed by the other over the years and Sea Shepherd’s vessel Ady Gil sank during confrontations in January 2010. Japan hunts under a “scientific research” loophole in the international moratorium on whaling.

Man throws 3-year-old son, himself off NYC roof Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK - A man involved in a custody dispute who was supposed to turn his 3-year-old son over to the boy’s mother instead threw the child off the roof of a 52-story Manhattan apartment building before jumping to his death, police said. Officers responding to an emergency call reporting two jumpers from the building on the Upper West Side around noon Sunday found Dmitriy Kanarikov, 35, and the boy on the lower rooftops of two separate nearby buildings.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his son, Kirill Kanarikov, was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said. A witness said the boy was wearing Christmas pajamas.

The boy’s mother had custody of the child and the father, who had visitation rights, was supposed to hand the boy over to the mother at a police precinct Sunday afternoon, authorities said. Luis Ortiz told the New York Post that he was at the hospital when paramedics rushed the boy there and that they were pumping his chest and working on him. “You could tell he was slipping away. They said the father was up there, but they didn’t bring anyone else in. It was just heartbreaking. I have two kids of my own. They tried to do the best they could,” Ortiz told the newspaper. Ortiz told the New York Daily News that the tot was dressed in Christmas pajamas.

Authorities said the father did not live in the building listed as South Park Tower, which is a short distance away from Columbus Circle and Lincoln Center. Police investigating the deaths left the building in the mid-afternoon to photograph a gray Lexus RX350 parked nearby.

It’s the second time this year that a parent and child have been involved in a fatal plunge from a New York apartment building. In March, a woman clutching her baby son in her arms plunged eight stories out of a Harlem apartment window to her death, but the 10-month-old survived. Authorities found a suicide note in her home.

INDONESIA President calls for MP3EI projects implementation on time

“I ask the coordinating minister for economy and other related ministers to make sure that the groundbreaking of all MP3EI related projects in 2014 be implemented on time,” noted the president in Cilegon, Banten Province, on Monday.

grated steel factory of PT Krakatau Posco in Cilegon, the head of state reinstated that the other MP3EI projects, which have been under construction for two years, should be completed on time as planned.

The integrated steel factory of PT Krakatau Posco is one of the

MP3EI projects, others being the expansion of Tanjung Priok port and Soekarno-Hatta airport in Jakarta, the development of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and other infrastructural developments.

“We want our economy to grow strong and sustainable through the MP3EI program until

2025, and this integrated steel factory is part of the development in the industrial cluster of Java Island,” stated the president.

PT Krakatau Posco is a joint venture between Posco and PT Krakatau Steel, which own 70 percent and 30 percent stake respectively. This project, worth US$6 billion, is the biggest investment project in Indonesia.

The president noted that strong cooperation between Krakatau Posco and Krakatau Steel is a

long term investment to make Indonesia a strong industrial nation.

“Along with national industrial progress, the current steel supply is also lacking and thus the government continues to encourage Krakatau Steel to become a reliable sheet steel producer,” pointed out the president.

He expressed hope that PT Krakatau Posco will increase the capacity of steel produce to meet the national demand of steel.

Indonesia sees better investment prospects The Indonesian government has predicted that the country’s investment target, set at Rp390 trillion this year, could be achieved, expressing optimism that interest by foreign investors in Indonesia will increase in 2014.

Deputy Finance Minister Mahendra Sirgar said he was optimistic that the 2013 investment target of Rp390 trillion will be achieved, regardless that the country’s economic growth was slowing. “If we look at the figure, we can achieve it. I can see that the investment target at Rp390 trillion for the entire year of 2013 can be realized,” Mahendra said during a recent seminar.

In the meantime, head of the Finance Ministry’s Macro Economic Study Center, Luky Alfirman, said on Thursday that interest by foreign businesses in investing capital in Indonesia would increase in 2014.

“Indonesia will remain a main target for investments by foreign investors,” Luky Alfirman said.

He added that the strong interest by foreign investors to make investments in Indonesia was inseparable from the country’s promising potential and domestic economic growth, which could exceed five percent.

“Besides that, Indonesia has investment opportunities which are better than those found in other countries,” Alfirman said.

Yet, Mahendra, who is also the head of the BKPM, said that the growth of investment in 2014 could increase by 15 percent, even through economic growth would still face constraints.

“I believe the investment growth will reach 15 percent in 2014. But I will do my best to exceed 15 percent,” the BKPM chief said on Dec. 4.

Mahendra noted that the increase in investment could be boosted by investment in downstream industries or in the mineral resources processing industry, in line with the law on mineral and coal development. The law is expected to be put into effect next year. He also expressed hope that domestic investment next year will reach 40 percent of total investment values in Indonesia, or almost the same as the values of foreign investment, which always dominated portfolio investments.

“We hope domestic investment in 2014 would reach 40 percent of total investment values. Domestic investment currently accounts for

only one third of the total investment,” he said.

Like the BPKM, HSBC Indonesia has also predicted that Indonesia will still see positive investment growth in 2014, despite the discouraging trend of an economic slowdown.

Investment would continue to grow because of proper handling of inflation and the trade balance by the government, HSBC Indonesia Managing Director of Global Markets, Ali Setiawan, said during a seminar last month entitled “HSBC Global Economic Outlook 2014”.

“Bank Indonesia (the central bank) has taken a series of steps and the government has been consistent in its policy in dealing with structural problems and redressing the trade balance,” Ali said. He said Japan still places Indonesia on top of its investment destination list. “Indonesia has done a good job in the eye of the international community. Indonesia is the most interesting, not only for Japanese investors. European and US investors also are similarly interested,” he said.

The investment market is still large in Indonesia, he added, citing Java remaining open for new investments, such as in infrastructure.

“In the infrastructure sector we are still lagging behind neighboring countries. Fundamentally, the Indonesian economy is still growing, therefore, there was cause for much concern,” he said.

The government, however, needs to be more transparent and consistent in carrying out its policies, he emphasised.

For example, in the funeral ceremony in Bali, when the corpse is carried to cemetery, in the course from the funeral home the flowers known as sekar ura are sprinkled at every intersection. It is a mixture of flower, yellow rice and perforated coin.

“Sekar ura is the epitome of farewell expression to the deceased and those who are still alive. Flowers in the sekar ura represents sincerity to release the deceased who will go to the afterlife realm,” said Wiana.

In a memukur or nyekah ritual, the astral body of people who are given a ritual is symbolized by human figure made of flowers or puspa lingga. It was described in the Ligya and Yama Purwana Tattva palm-leaf manuscript.

According to the Head of Denpasar Transportation Agency, I Gede Astika, Jalan Sudirman had been designated as an area of safety and legal compliance zone since Sunday (Dec 22). It was said the road users were strictly prohibited to make violations, including violation of the existing signs. All this time, for instance, motorcycle riders seemed reluctant to pass through the prepared lane and obeyed the rules requiring the use of facility. If they were still reckless to commit the violation, the riders would be dealt firmly.

“The area of Jalan Sudirman have owned special lane for motorcycles. We ask all motorcycle riders to obey the signs and use the facilities provided if they do not want to be dealt with firmly by the authorities,” said Astika warned.

Dhaka - Bangladesh security forces have arrested 37 Chinese and Taiwanese nationals after raiding an illegal Internet telephone operation they were allegedly running in an upscale Dhaka neighbourhood, an official said Monday. Officers from the elite Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) raided the apartment block late on Sunday and arrested the foreigners over the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) operation offering cheap international calls, RAB spokesman Habibur Rahman said.

“They rented the building to run illegal VoIP business. The foreigners include seven women. Thirty-two of them are Taiwanese and the rest Chinese. They’ll be handed over to a police station today,” he told AFP. “We’ve examined their papers. They don’t have any work permit to operate in Bangladesh,” he added.

The foreigners -- most aged in their twenties and thirties -- were paraded before local media along with seized telecoms equipment late on Sunday after the raid in capital’s Uttara district.

Phone companies in Bangladesh offering international calls -- including through VoIP services -- must obtain a licence from the nation’s telecoms regulator, ensuring large revenues for the government.

The RAB has busted dozens of illegal VoIP businesses in the past.

The VoIP business has been booming in the country thanks to the more than 10 million Bangladeshis who live and work overseas.

CONCORD, N.H. — After the first full day of winter brought everything from balmy temperatures along the Mid-Atlantic to snow in the Midwest and ice, snow and flooding in the Great Lakes, some people could be left in the dark for Christmas. Much of the foul weather that occurred Sunday has lessened or disappeared entirely, but the harsh aftereffects were expected to linger.

Brad Hoving, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, Mich., said most people were without power in some counties between Grand Rapids and Lansing, Mich.

Some may not have electricity until Wednesday or even Thursday, he said. “It’s a big deal,” Hoving said. “It’s Christmas and we’ve just had a major ice storm,” with trees toppling over and icecovered power lines.

By late Sunday, ice and snow had knocked out power to 440,000 homes and businesses in Michigan, upstate New York and northern New England — about half of whom had their power back by early Monday. The storm also left more than 400,000 people without electricity in eastern Canada.

At least nine deaths in the U.S. were blamed on the storm, including five people killed in flooding in Kentucky and a woman who died after a tornado with winds of 130 mph struck in Arkansas.

Five people were killed in Canada in highway accidents related to the storm.

By late Sunday, nearly 700 flights nationwide had been canceled and about 7,200 were delayed, according to aviation tracking website FlightAware.com.

But flights were mostly running on schedule on Monday morning. During one of the nation’s busiest travel times, icy weather was expected to make roads slick and hazardous through at least Monday from the upper Midwest to northern New England. Congress eyes spy review in surveillance logjam WASHINGTON — A White House review of U.S. surveillance programs has given Congress some temporary political cover after lawmakers failed this year to overhaul spy operations, and could break the legislative snarl that followed months of global outrage over privacy intrusions.

Since last summer, a deeply divided Congress has tussled over competing plans to protect Americans’ privacy rights by limiting National Security Agency powers to track terrorists.

But a presidential advisory panel’s 46 tough recommendations, released this past week by the White House, offer a way ahead for lawmakers who face the voters next fall. They can point to the suggestions to save face politically with security-minded constituents if surveillance is scaled back aggressively.

“The American public is expressing an opinion that it feels safer, and we don’t need as many of these intrusive-sounding programs as we needed a decade ago,” said Tom Newcomb, a former CIA officer and lawyer who served as a counterterrorism adviser to President George W. Bush.

“The political risk, as I see it, is all of this changes if we get a terrorist attack or a significant attempt that scares us again,” said Newcomb, who’s now a criminal justice and political science professor at Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio. “And then Congress, which has generally taken it upon itself to assign blame, will blame those who reformed.”

At the least, the review finally could prod Congress into defining the extent to which the U.S. should spy on its citizens and foreign allies. The recommendations “reaffirm what many of my colleagues and I have been saying since June — the NSA has gone too far,” said Republican Rep. James F. Sensenbrenner.

The review group adopted the central part of legislation that he is pushing — barring the NSA from its massive daily sweep of U.S. telephone records. Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden said he found a lot in the report “for a reformer to like.”

Different spectacle was seen at a number of churches in Gianyar County, Sunday (Dec 22). In welcoming the Christmas celebration this year, some boards of the church in Gianyar County began to decorate their sanctum.

Apart from penjor, the Christians also began preparing some facilities of reception. Christmas trees apparently had started to be decorated as seen in the St. Maria Ratu Fosari Gianyar Catholic Church, Tedung area, Abianbase village, Gianyar. Some tents had been installed in the church courtyard. A pair of penjor ornament indicating a very thick acculturation jazzed up the moment of Christmas celebration this year. In the northern part of the church courtyard were seen police officers preparing security post.

DENPASAR - War against plastic waste is now more intensely carried out in the area of Mount Batur Kintamani, Bangli.

It is carried out every Sunday by the people around the Mount Batur with the involvement of the NGOs, environmental activists and military personnel to collect tens of tons of plastic waste. Strangely, the collected waste is not transported, but still allowed to accumulate until mounting. “Having been collected, no one takes it,” said Jero Gede Alitan, Sunday (Dec 22).

Further, Jero Gede Alitan said that Bali government had promised to give 2 waste trucks for each village to transport the plastic waste having been collected by residents to landfill. However, so far the promise was not realized.

Even, residents had to rent a truck to move the plastic waste. More seriously, the plastic was neglected to accumulate. “We were promised

by Bali government to be given waste truck, but so far it is not realized. Meanwhile, we at the village level are ready to collect no matter how small the plastic is,” he said.

Jero Gede added that residents at Batur village and 15 other villages listed as geopark area undertook the plastic waste collection once a month and could collect up to 2

tons of plastic waste. “If disposed to forest, it can harm. If set it to fire, the ash of plastic waste will be hazardous because the content of chemical substance of the plastic waste is high,” he said when met at Prapan Temple at Batur.

Creating the habit of clean living to the people was not easy, but by degrees the effort to make the waste-free Bangli could be realized. However, the real action with the support of the Bali government was highly needed, so that all components could work together to create the clean environment of Bangli. “Enthusiasm of the community is extraordinary, but the constraint lies in provincial government. Formerly, it promised two waste trucks for each village, but so far it has not been realized,” he complained.

Nevertheless, Jero Gede was still enthusiastic to continuously express the importance of a healthy environment for the entire community. He still expected the related institutions to seriously create Bangli into a clean and plastic waste-free region. “I’m not desperate to expect the officials in order they can realize what people ask after collecting the plastic waste such as a truck to transport it where it should be because it reaches several tons not kilograms,” he affirmed. DENPASAR - The pursuit against the murder culprit of a Bali Police cop, I Putu Suarsa, by a joint team of Bali Police, Denpasar Metro Police and South Denpasar Police was not in vain. The murderer named M. Subahan, 35, could be arrested in a chicken coop at Kumuk Leleng hamlet, Sebaman village, Kalisat subdistrict, Jember, East Java, Sunday (Dec 22) at 5:45 a.m. local time.

After the arrest, the suspect was immediately taken to Denpasar Metro Police.

Chief of Denpasar Metro Police, Djoko Hariutomo, said the arrest of the cop murderer was due to the hard work of the joint team. After the incident, a number of personnel were immediately assigned to Jember to track the whereabouts of the suspect.

“The suspect was arrested while he was asleep in the chicken coop. He could not move when arrested,” explained Chief Djoko Hariutomo on Sunday while saying the suspect arrived at 5:00 p.m.

After murdering the victim, the suspect immediately fled to Jember by public transportation to Ubung terminal and then boarded a bus to Jember. When he was a fugitive of police, the suspect was hiding in Jember. “He (the suspect) did not go anywhere but hid in Jember. Fortunately, members of the joint team could catch him,” he told media crews on Sunday.

Previously, police had rummage through the location alleged to be-

come the hideaway of the suspect in Jember. However, based on tracking of police, the last position of the suspect was known in the chicken coop of Kyai Faktur. Even, the suspect worked there to provide chicken feed.

“At the moment, the suspect is still being examined. His case is still being developed in order to immediately investigate it,” he explained.

The development of the case was conducted to determine if there were other culprits who participated in assisting and protecting when he was at large. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Santana reunites with ex-bandmate, now homeless

OAKLAND, California — A news reporter for a San Francisco television station has reunited rock guitarist Carolos Santana with a former bandmate he hadn’t seen in decades and who now lives on the streets of Oakland.

Reporter Stanley Roberts ran into percussionist Marcus “The Magnificent” Malone while working on a story about illegal dumping last week, KRON-TV in San Francisco reported.

Although he initially was skeptical of the homeless man’s claim that the Santana Blues Band got its start in his mother’s garage in the late 1960s, Roberts checked out the story and confirmed it. And on Friday, he took Santana for a surprise visit to the camper where Malone has been staying.

“You don’t know how afraid I am to let you see me,” Malone said softly after he and the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer embraced. “We cherish you,” Santana replied. “It’s an honor to be in

your presence.”

Santana has credited Malone with being an important influence on his AfroLatin sound, according to former Rolling Stone magazine writer Ben Fong-Torres’ book “Not Fade Away: A Backstage Ticket to 20 Years of Rock & Roll.”

Malone played congas on Santana’s eponymous first album, but left the band in 1969 shortly before its seminal performance at Woodstock when he was imprisoned for manslaughter, according to Fong-Torres.

Ducks.” It’s the unofficial motto for the family featured in the TV reality show Duck Dynasty and that homespun philosophy permeates nearly everything in this small north Louisiana town. It’s perhaps most on display at the White’s Ferry Road Church of Christ in West Monroe, where the Robertson family prays and preaches most Sunday mornings.

The family — including patriarch Phil Robertson, who ignited a controversy last week when he told a magazine reporter that gays are sinners and AfricanAmericans were happy under Jim Crow laws — were in a front pew this past Sunday. And standing by beliefs they say are deeply rooted in their reading of the Bible.

The rest of the flock, decked out in Duck Dynasty hats and bandannas, stood by the family and the sentiments Phil Robertson expressed. Alan, Robertson’s eldest son, helped deliver a Christmasthemed sermon. He started off by refer-

ring to last week’s controversy. “Hope your week went well,” he dead-panned.

“Ours was kinda’ slow.”

He was referring, of course, to the show’s forced hiatus: TV network A&E suspended broadcasts last week after Phil’s remarks about blacks and gays caused a public uproar.
