New sex charge against Spacey: US prosecutors LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles district attorney’s office has received a second sexual assault complaint against Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey, whose acting career has nosedived following allegations by more than a dozen men in the United States and Britain. “A case of sexual assault was filed yesterday (21/8) in our office by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, involving Kevin Spacey, and is under review,” Greg Risling with the prosecutors’ office told AFP Wednesday. A separate investigation was opened back in April for a complaint about an alleged assault in 1992 involving a man. Risling did not specify details about this new complaint, or the status of the previous one. The two-time Academy Awardwinner has seen allegations against him pile up on the heels of the
#MeToo movement, which began with the fall of Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. Spacey also has open investigations in London, where he directed The Old Vic Theater between 2004 and 2015, and in Nantucket, an island resort near Boston. The first report that was made public was that of actor Anthony Rapp, 46, who claimed that the actor sexually abused him at age 14, back in 1986. Spacey apologized to Rapp, claiming not to remember the incident, but remained silent as accusations against him mushroomed. One actor anonymously told the Vulture portal that Spacey tried to rape him in 1984, when he was 14 years old. And eight members of the production team of his popular Netflix series “House of Cards” who also denounced “predatory” behavior by Spacey. (afp)

French rappers freed after brawl shuts Paris airport
PARIS - Two of France’s biggest rap stars were released on bail Thursday after a brawl between their entourages forced a partial shutdown of a Paris airport.

The rumble between bitter rivals Booba and Kaaris in the departures hall of Orly airport three weeks ago was filmed by holidaymakers on their phones, as the two groups fought in a duty-free shop. A judge later ordered that the rappers be locked up until September 6 because of the “persistent animosity between the two groups”. But an appeal court in Paris on Thursday overruled the decision, freeing the rappers and eight members of their respective posses on bail. It was set at 30,000 euros ($34,700) for the two artists, who were also ordered to stay away from each other and to hand over
their passports. A ninth follower had earlier been freed by a local court near the airport. The two rappers, who were on their way to a concert in Barcelona, have waged a feud over social media where some users mocked the duo and called on them to settle differences with their fists. - ‘Perfume used as weapons’ Airport bosses said the brawl had “endangered the lives of others”, and lodged a public order complaint against the singers after the ruckus forced officials to temporarily shut down the departures hall.
The rappers have been held in separate prisons near Paris since the fight on August 3. Booba, aka Elie Yaffa, reportedly fell out with Kaaris, 38, after failing to support him in a dispute with fellow French artist Rohff. Rohff was sentenced in November to five years in jail for aggravated assault in a fashion boutique owned by 41-year-old Booba. Kaaris’ lawyers Arash Derambarsh and Yacine Yakouti told a court earlier this month that the singer was “taken aside by Booba, who insulted his child and his wife”, before several people “jumped on him”. Residents of Hawaii were bracing for a rare landfall by a powerful hurricane as they stocked up on water, food and emergency supplies. Hurricane Lane, which weakened slightly to a category 4 storm overnight, is packing 155-mile (250-kilometre) -per-hour winds and was expected to reach the archipelago’s Big Island by nightfall Wednesday. President Donald Trump urged residents to prepare for the storm, which was expected to bring torrential rains, high winds and dangerous surf. “Everyone in the path of #HurricaneLane please prepare yourselves, heed the advice of State and local officials, and follow @NWSHonolulu for updates. Be safe!” he tweeted. The National Weather Service said a hurricane warning has been issued for Maui County and Hawaii County while a hurricane watch was in effect in Kauai and Oahu.
“The center of Lane will track dangerously close to the Hawaiian Islands from Thursday through Saturday,” it said. It added that though Lane is forecast to weaken in the next 48 hours it will remain a dangerous hurricane as it nears the Hawaiian Islands. “Lane is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 10 to 15 inches (250 to 380 millimetres) with isolated amounts greater than 20 inches over the Hawaiian Islands,” the NWS said. It added that regardless of the
exact track of the storm, the state should brace for the potentially lifethreatening impacts. - Bracing for the worst “It’s not a question of whether they’re going to be hit or not,” Brock Long, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) told a press briefing. “They’re going to see impacts from this storm.” He said the priority at this point was to ensure residents were prepared for the storm. “Right now the priority that we
have is life safety,” he said. “We are asking citizens to proactively heed all of the warning order information coming from the governor and the local county emergency management agencies within the state.” Hurricanes rarely make landfall in Hawaii and the last major storm to strike the state was nearly three decades ago, when Hurricane Iniki barrelled into the island of Kauai, leaving six people dead and causing billions of dollars in damage. In preparation for the latest storm, state officials have closed schools and public offices in the counties affected while residents rushed to stores to stock up on water, food and other supplies. Many were also boarding up their houses.
Governor David Ige on Tuesday declared a state of emergency on Big Island to help provide relief for damage from the hurricane. “Hurricane Lane is not a well-behaved hurricane,” he said in a statement. “I’ve not seen such dramatic changes in the forecast track as I’ve seen with this storm. First Day Enlivened by Jukung Race and ILP
The 2018 Boost Sanur Village Festival was held on Wednesday, August 22nd. The first day was enlivened by the Jukung race until Indra Lesmana’s musician performance with his new group.
Race of traditional boat begin the SVF Boost series which was held from August 22 to 26. Although the fishermen had difficulty speeding up the jukung because the wind was not blowing hard, it did not dampen the enthusiasm of the annual agenda that this year held in Matahari Terbit Beach. Boost SVF Chairperson, IB Gede Sidharta Putra said that jukung race is a legendary activity for the people of Sanur and has been done long before the start of this annual festival since 2006. Jukung race is now a part of SVF and developed to remain sustainable and become an attractive tourist attraction. The man who is familiarly called Gusde, said the involvement of this traditional boat was also a form of conservation of the heritage which had become one of the regional icons managed under the auspices of the Sanur Development Foundation (YPS). “We are doing conservation as our consistency to pay attention to the existence of traditional jukung in Sanur. Because we support it as an icon of tourism on Sanur Beach,” he said. The competition involved 50 participants from 5 groups. Each group sought 5 best to compete in the final. “There are 25 participants that will compete in final. They have to cross a distance of about 8 kilometers by starting and finishing at Segara Ayu Beach,” he added. Gusde, who is also Chair of Denpasar’s Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI) Denpasar and Chairman of the Denpasar’s Tourism Development Agency (BPPD), said that besides the Jukung race there were also workshop activities and various other activities. Including, entertainments on the main stage which is always awaited by visitors. Since the afternoon, the main stage has been filled with a variety of entertainment including Balaram Ethnic Fussion, Cisjis Dancesport Sanur, Sangaji Musik Indonesia, Ratrocker, Gambleer, fashion shows, and ballet performances from Sanur. In addition there is also the appearance of Keva Amir, one of the participants who is currently following the competition for The Voice Kids Indonesia Seasons 3.
The most awaited performance was Indra Lesmana Project (ILP), a new group of progressive metal music genre initiated by jazz musician Indra Lesmana. He said, the formation of ILP was inspired by the eruption of Mount Agung 2017, while SVF which carried the Mandala Giri theme was also an effort to refocus the attention of the audience to Mount Agung which became a spiritual center in Bali. “Let us make the eruption of Mount Agung a creative energy that makes us united, mutual cooperation, and maintaining the preservation of Mount Agung which is a spiritual center in Bali,” said Indra. The ceremony for the opening of the SVF Boost will be carried out by Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya, Thursday night. Shaken by earthquake, Dalem Temple’s wantilan hall of Bunutin collapses BANGLI - A 7-magnitude earthquake that returned to shake Bali on Sunday night (Aug.19) resulted in damages to buildings at a number of points. In the home village of the regent of Bangli, namely Bunutin village, Kintamani, a wantilan hall standing in the local Dalem Temple area collapsed. Severity of the earthquake that occurred several times from that noon also caused the rear wall of the building belonging to a resident at Tamanbali village to collapse. Headman of Bunutin, I Made Subrata, when contacted on Monday afternoon (Aug. 20) justified the incident. He said the collapse of the wantilan building at Dalem Temple occurred shortly after the earthquake striking around 23:00 Local Time. Severity of the earthquake shocks caused the roof of the building to collapse and several pillars to be broken. “The roof fell out. As consequence, the wantilan building cannot be used at all,” he explained. According to Subrata, the collapse of the wantilan building, which had just been completed two years ago, is alleged to happen because the structure of the land and construction of the building experienced a shift after being shaken by the earthquake for many times since last August 5. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported due to the incident because the earthquake occurred at night. “This wantilan is a versatile building. It can be used for cockfight arena, dance stage and venue of cultural activities,” he explained. He added that due to the damage to the 27x20 meters building, the material losses that had to be borne by the local villagers reached IDR 1.2 billion.
In addition to causing the collapse of the wantilan building at Dalem Temple of Bunutin village, the earthquake shocks also resulted in the collapse of the rear wall of the bale daja (northern pavilion) building owned by Ketut Rai Puspani, a resident of Gaga hamlet, Tamanbali village, Bangli. Rai said that the broken wall of her bale occurred just after the earthquake shook on Sunday afternoon. The broken wall material also hit the warehouse behind it. “Having been shaken by the first earthquake, some parts of the wall began to crack. Actually I want to repair it, but I have no time before it broke down because it was rocked by subsequent earthquake yesterday (Sunday) afternoon,” she said. Rai added there were no family members or valuables affected by the collapsed materials because since few days before the northern pavilion building formerly occupied by his mother-in-law has been emptied. Separately, the Chief Executive Officer of the Bangli Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Wayan Karmawan, accompanied by the Head of Emergency and Logistics Section, Ketut Agus Sutapa, said that in addition to impacting damages in the two locations, the earthquake that occurred on Sunday night also resulted in destruction of four houses at Undisan village, Tembuku. The earthquake shock which was quite hard also returned to make Abang Hill at Buahan village landslide and impact on the disruption of traffic. “There were no fatalities due to the earthquake yesterday. Australian eco-friendly ‘Clothes Library’ fights fast fashion
IN a small shop along one of Sydney’s busiest streets, Sarah Freeman is encouraging Australians to slow down and break their addiction to fast fashion.
Shocked by the speed at which Australians buy and throw away cheap garments, she is trying to harness an ancient concept -- libraries -- to persuade shoppers to rent instead of purchase clothes. “Today’s society just seem to wear clothes like condoms. They wear them once and they throw them away,” the passionate vintage garment aficionado told AFP at her Clothes Library in the inner suburb of Potts Point. “That’s not how clothes are supposed to be designed. The clothes nowadays are manufactured for six wears, I think, which is terrible.” Globally, clothing production doubled from 2000-14, with the number of garments bought each year by consumers soaring by 60 percent, according to consulting firm McKinsey & Company. A booming part of the industry, including in Australia, is fast fashion, which quickly turns catwalk designs into apparel sold at low or ultra-low prices and easily accessible via online sites. In Australia, where the demand for textiles is one of the highest per capita in the world, the fast fashion sector grew by 19.5 percent over five years to Aus$1.8 billion (US$1.4 billion) in 2017-18, research firm IBISWorld reported. A recent YouGov survey also found that almost a quarter of Australians have thrown away an item of clothing after wearing it just once, and four in 10 admitted they had binned unwanted garments, adding to landfill. “They don’t always see it as something that is a valuable product to keep in your wardrobe,” Alison Gwilt, a sustainable fashion expert and researcher at the University of South Australia, told AFP. “So already the mindset from the very beginning when you buy that type of product is that you think of it as something that’s short-lived.” At the Sydney distribution centre of St Vincent de Paul Society, a major charity recycling clothes, manager George

The rock bottom prices for consumers contrast with the high cost paid by the environment. Tonnes of cheap clothes are churned out every year in developing countries, using up copious amounts of energy and resources and polluting waterways near factories with toxic chemicals. The materials used are often synthetic and non-biodegradable, meaning even washing can be hazardous, with some textiles shedding plastic micro-fibres that make their way to water catchments and oceans in consumer countries like Australia. In recent months, the devastating impact of waste has made headlines after China, Australia’s biggest market for recycling waste, cracked down on foreign imports. Beijing’s restrictions on “contaminated” recycled materials including fabric has forced Australians to think about how much waste they produce and galvanised efforts to explore more sustainable approaches. Producers have been proactive with natural fibres -- Australia is a key supplier of wool and high-quality cotton -- Australian Fashion Council chief executive David Giles-Kaye told AFP. Retailers including major player Cotton On are pledging to make their manufacturing chains transparent and ethical. At Melbourne’s Deakin University, researchers won support from Swedish mega-retailer H&M to develop “circular denim”, where old jeans are used to colour new ones, reducing the impact on landfills and of dye run-off. St Vincent’s has joined the efforts at the recycling level, examining better ways to sort donated clothes into different fibre types and repurpose garments to extend their life-cycle. “We have to become a lot... smarter and really use technology to try and break things down into their base form so that things can actually be reused and we can become a true circular economy,” the charity’s retail development manager Jacqui Dropulic told AFP. Although the efforts could lead to significant change within the fashion industry, Giles-Kaye believes the key to solving the issue ultimately lies with consumers and their desire for even quicker and cheaper clothing. “It’s still very much a fringe movement... When consumers continue to want more product at a lower price it really drives the producers into less sustainable areas of manufacturing,” he said. Freeman is convinced that if concepts like hers allowing shoppers to borrow and return quality secondhand clothes for a small monthly subscription fee take off, people power can make a difference. “Hopefully it will catch on and people will start being more conscious and just make an effort to not go out and purchase the fast fashion items,” she said. “I mean if we stop demanding it, then they (retailers) have to stop supplying it.” (afp)

DENPASAR — The impact of the earthquake centered in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) increases. At this time, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Buleleng found six houses at Pegayaman village, Sukasada, heavily damaged. In addition, the compound wall of the Amerta Sari hamlet hall and Melanting Temple at the local village was also damaged by the earthquake.

Interestingly, this damage was just discovered by the Rapid Response Team (TRC) of the BPBD after receiving the reports from relevant village officials. Actually, the houses were damaged by the first earthquake on Sunday (Aug. 5). Results of the data collection by the TRC of the BPBD Buleleng indicated if the six houses had various damages. The residents having the houses consist of Nyoman Nita, 60, Wayan Jati, 60, Kadek Bagiata 38, Wayan Mastra, 60, Made Gawa, 55, and Made Kadung, 85. From the data collection, the damage includes the cracked wall, collapsed roof and collapsed shrine building. Although their homes suffered severe damage, the villagers do not evacuate by building emergency tents. Meanwhile, the damages to public facilities happened to compound wall and the shrine falling out due to earthquake shock.
Chief Executive of the BPBD Buleleng, Ida Bagus Suadnyana, stated on Wednesday (Aug. 22) that the report of the earthquake at Amerta Sari hamlet, Pegayaman, was indeed late in entering the BPBD. Moreover, the damage was barely monitored because the BPBD had not received any data from village official. However, last Wednesday there was a report on the damage, so the TRC personnel immediately carried out data collection to the location. From the data collection, it was found that seven houses are damaged by a series of the earthquake. “We have information from the subdistrict, and tomorrow (Aug. 23) we’ll make further assessment,” he said. According to him, temporarily the scattered data on the damages caused by the earthquake are included in the data on the damages of houses and public facilities having been collected previously. Later on, the data will also be submitted to the BNPB Bali or will be submitted back to the central BNPB. Until now, it is waiting for further instructions related to the requests for the assistance to handle damages caused by the earthquake. Meanwhile, the BNPB Bali has been checking the damage and it just needs to complete the data of the victims affected by the earthquake. “We continuously input the data to be submitted to the province or followed up to central government. DENPASAR - The Financial Services Authority (OJK) inaugurated the operation of the OJK Innovation Center for Digital Financial Technology (OJK Infinity) on Monday (Aug. 20). OJK Infinity aims to build a fintech ecosystem into a part of the national financial system benefiting the community and encouraging economic growth. “Through OJK Infinity, the fintech industry is expected to be able to provide innovative, effective and efficient financial services while still prioritizing consumer protection,” said Wimboh Santoso, OJK’s Board of Commissioners, in the launch of the OJK Infinity, on Monday (Aug. 20). The establishment of OJK Infinity is part of the OJK’s digital financial vision, namely providing effective, efficient and useful services; supporting financial inclusion; and improving community welfare. OJK Infinity will serve as a forum for discussion and collaboration between the industry, regulators, government, academicians and other innovation hubs to reach the three functions of the OJK Infinity. It will facilitate regulatory sandbox as a Fintech incubator to balance innovation with consumer protection and serves as an innovation hub for the development of the Digital Financial Industry (IKD) as well as the development of the IKD ecosystem as a whole. As an educational center for financial service players, consumers and academicians will become IKD activists and Indonesian economic players in the future. In carrying out these three functions, the OJK will
cooperate in terms of exchanging information and resources with various stakeholders, including the ministry and state institutions, as well as all financial service industry players, associations and universities to form a comprehensive digital financial ecosystem. The OJK Infinity can also be used by general public to obtain information regarding the IKD, while the IKD players will know more about the IKD regulations. In the future, OJK Infinity will expand its collaboration with educational institutions and the private sector having commitments that are in line with the development of the digital financial sector, one of which is that OJK makes collaboration with Telkom University through a Memorandum of Understanding within the scope of research and the establishment of a Master Education program in the IKD field. The OJK will issue an OJK regulation on Digital Financial Innovation that will become a legal instrument to protect all innovations in the digital financial sector. TABANAN - The ngejot or tradition of sharing is not only carried out on Hindu religious days. Muslims, especially in Tabanan, have the same tradition. When celebrating the Eid al-Adha, the Muslims at Tunggal Sari hamlet, Delod Peken, Tabanan, has the tradition of slaughtering or distributing sacrificial meat to non-Muslim residents living around the Tabanan Great Mosque on Wednesday (Aug. 22). This sharing tradition is one form of religious tolerances carried out for a long time. Dozens of kilograms of beef and mutton were distributed on the Eid al-Adha. Chairperson of the Tabanan Great Mosque sacrifice committee, Muhammad Badrian, said the
program began at 13:00 Local Time. Some members of the sacrificial committee at the Tabanan Great Mosque moved to the homes of non-Muslim residents with the aim of distributing sacrificial meat after they said Id prayers at the local mosque. Badrian continued that the distribution of sacrificial meat is a form of interfaith tolerance on the Island of Bali. He added the sacrificial animals collected in the Tabanan Great Mosque amounted to 23 goats and 5 cows. From this number was obtained a total of 1,200 packages of sacrificial meat and have been distributed to residents. Badrian said the moment becomes a form of interfaith tolerance in Tabanan that had been well
established. “It becomes a concern among the Tunggal Sari community,” he said. Badrian, who is also the neighborhood chief, said the interfaith tradition of distributing sacrificial meat at Tunggal Sari hamlet has taken place since 1950 and so far the tradition is still practiced every Eid al-Adha with the aim of strengthening religious tolerance. Meanwhile, the Hindus welcomed the way of Muslims to maintain tolerance between religious communities. “Every year, we always get sacrificial meat during the celebration of Eid al-Adha,” said one of the residents who received a package of sacrificial meat, I Made Suastika. Flood-stricken Kerala angry after UAE $100m offer rejected
KINMEN - Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen called for unity and vowed not to bow to pressure from Beijing on Thursday as the island marked the 60th anniversary of a deadly Chinese artillery attack. The anniversary of the assault on tiny Kinmen island, known as the “823 bombardment”, comes as China steps up pressure on selfruling Taiwan, which it sees as part of its territory to be reunified. China’s People’s Liberation Army fired 470,000 shells at Kinmen and nearby islets in 1958, killing 618 servicemen and civilians in an attack that lasted 44 days. Kinmen is part of Taiwan, but lies less than two miles off mainland China, at the narrowest part of the Taiwan Strait. “When we remember the ‘823 bombardment’ 60 years later, we will not forget the spirit of solidarity,” Tsai said on her Facebook page. “When we face diplomatic suppression we will not forget how strong our country can be when we are united,” she added, saying that while Taiwanese people cherished peace they would not take national security for granted. Tensions with Beijing have worsened under Tsai because she refuses to acknowledge that Taiwan is part of “one China”. In response, China has ramped up military drills and poached Taiwan’s official diplomatic allies -- El Salvador became the third this year to switch ties from Taipei to Beijing on Tuesday.
At an anniversary ceremony held in a former army bunker and combat centre in Kinmen, Taiwan’s Defence Minister Yen De-fa said today’s troops in Taiwan must again make “combat preparations” in the face of what he described as a growing military threat from China. Hundreds of soldiers, relatives and veterans, some in their 80s and 90s, gathered at a Kinmen cemetery where victims of the 1958 bombardment were buried. Lai Jen-hsien, 83, remembered the attack. “We were joking it was firecrackers, but then all of a sudden it was a rain of them (artillery),” said Lai, who was in the combat engineer battalion in Kinmen at the time. He told AFP he did not think history would repeat itself on Kinmen. “Peace is priceless. War is ruthless. We should try our best to peacefully handle the fate of people from both sides of the (Taiwan) Strait,” Lai said. China has sought to bring Taiwan back into the fold since nationalist troops fled to the island after their defeat by communist forces on the mainland in 1949. Kinmen historically often found itself on the frontline, although now the island is a popular tourist attraction for both mainland Chinese and Taiwanese visitors. KOCHI - Leaders of flood-stricken Kerala state angrily hit out at India’s national government Thursday for rejecting a $100 million aid offer from the United Arab Emirates as more people entered relief camps to escape the devastation. More than 1.3 million people have now packed into temporary camps even though the floods, which have left at least 420 dead and missing, are fast receding. The New Delhi government infuriated the Kerala administration by rejecting the cash offer from the wealthy Gulf state. Kerala’s Finance Minister Thomas Isaac accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government of adopting a “dog-in-the-manger” policy by refusing the money. The communist minister added in a Twitter attack that if the right wing national government takes a “negative stance” on the UAE offer “they should compensate Kerala.” Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan called for “high level” talks with the national government on the dispute. There are an estimated three million Indians in the UAE, with
many from Kerala which has a large Muslim population. India’s foreign ministry announced late Wednesday however that the government would stick to its policy of “meeting the requirements for relief and rehabilitation through domestic efforts” and not accept money from foreign governments. It added that outside money could only be donated through Indian-origin individuals or foundations. India has a record of refusing foreign aid after disasters, turning down foreign help after the 2004 tsunami, which killed thousands in India. Experts said Indian governments want to prove they can handle any emergency themselves. The UAE offer was higher than the $97 million so far given by the central government to handle the
floods which state authorities estimate have caused damage worth more than $3 billion. They say 10,000 kilometres (6,000 miles) of roads have been destroyed or damaged, while estimates of the number of houses to be rebuilt vary from 20,000 to 50,000. Many of the new arrivals in relief camps are people who have returned to their homes to find them uninhabitable. One 68-year-old man committed suicide Wednesday after seeing the state of his home at Kothad in Ernakulam district. A 19-year-old boy took his own life earlier this week because his school certificates were destroyed by the floods, police said. The art of Rudat is still preserved and passed down for generations at Saren Jawa village, Budakeling, Karangasem. This art is danced at various celebrations, such as weddings and Mauludan fest. A coach of Rudat at the (MI) Nurulhidayah Islamic Elementary School from Saren Jawa, Komang Samsuhari, said that he is often invited to make performance at wedding events. According to Samsuhari, who is also a principal at the local MI, he specially trains children. In the meantime, the adult Rudat art troupe consisting of high school students is also taught by his father H. Ahmad Astari, who is also the hamlet chief of Saren Jawa. He said that there are only three Rudat arts in Karangasem. Other than at Saren Jawa, this art also exists at Islamic kampongs like the Sindu, Sidemen. The Rudat dance at Saren Jawa and Sindu shows a similarity. “Perhaps the Muslims of Saren Jawa and Sindu originate of the same region, equally from
Java. While that of Kecicang originates from Sasak, Lombok,” he said. Aside from Rudat dance, there is also Burdah art. According to Samsuhari, it is the only one in Karangasem. Burdah contains the praise to the Prophets. “We always preserve the arts and customs. So

The Hindu community in Bali which always preserves its ancestral culture has various unique and delicious traditional cakes or jaje. There is jaje purely the result of creative process of the community, while the others are the result of acculturation with other regional cultures or even that of other countries. Whatever the cake is, it remains to be preserved amidst of Balinese society until now. Even, its existence is always associated with ceremonial activities and Hindu ritual on the Island of the Gods. For example, one of them is jaje cerorot. Optionally, it is often named the jaje blukbuk, usually served when the Hindu community is carrying out a wedding ceremony in the process of proposing. Jaje cerorot is accompanied with a pillow-like cake. In Bali, this cake belongs to snack made from local (Balinese) rice flour combined with brown sugar and salt. On that account, it has a brownish red color. Cerorot is shaped with young coconut leaf wrap resembling a cone. For children, this cake is often referred to as the trumpet cake because the wrap is like a trumpet. There is a special technique for eating this cake. If people do not know, they will open the pin (bamboo pin to button the wrap) and then eat the soft and creamy cake. For those who already know the technique of eating it will push on the tip at the lower end of the young coconut leaf pointing to the top, so that the content of the cake appears. Just press and adjust how long we are able to chew it. If you eat a little, then push it a little too, and if you can eat at once, then push it full. Once again, to take out the content fully, push the
pointed end of the wrapper so that the content comes out. There is no need to open the curd of the wrap when eating the cake. Lately, this cake is usually used for refreshment served for guests to accompany the drinks like coffee or tea. It is usually easy to get as widely sold in traditional markets and cake shops. Unlike before, if there was no wedding ceremony, this was not made. Unfortunately, this sweet tasting cake can only last for one day. The ingredients used to make the jaje cerorot are local rice, brown sugar and salt (to taste). First of all, the rice is washed clean, and then soaked overnight. After that, resume and make it into flour. In the past, the making of flour in the traditional way was pounded with pestle in the mortar. Then, sieve the flour. This traditionally made flour makes the cake taste better when compared to flour made by factory. Brown sugar is then liquefied with hot water and then filtered as well. Next, add flour into the cold brown sugar liquid with the addition of enough salt. To prepare the wrap, make the packaging from young coconut leaf. Remove the stick of the leaf, fold at one of the ends and then twist circularly resembling a cone. After the coconut leaf wrap has been made, the mixture is poured into the wrapper. Be careful, do not let it be full because when steamed it can melt and fall. Finally, steam them until cooked (for approximately 20 minutes). To check whether the cake is already cooked, insert a palm stick into the steamed dough. If the dough is not sticky when being pulled, it means the cake is already cooked. If it has been cooked, take out the cake and it is ready to be served. (kmb)

Hundreds of children played so cheerfully, shouted and even clapped their friends to encourage. Not afraid of being muddy, exposed to rain and sunlight, they were always happy and laughing so happily. It is the atmosphere of the Festival ke Uma held for two days (Jun. 24-25) at Subak Uma Ole, Ole, Marga Dauh Puri village, Marga, Tabanan. They initially did not know each other, but after joining the game, they came into intimate atmosphere, happiness and full of togetherness. Space and time seem to have no limit to perform activities. Nature and environment of paddies are very friendly providing various tools and means for them to play. Children did not only entertain by seeing the festival alone, but were also given the opportunity to participate.

The second day was flushed by rain, but no children complained and protested against nature, no one thought about the rain-stopper or the cloud-breaking laser beam. Players of the show looked like farmers, receiving abundant water and sunshine with gratitude. The children faithfully waited for the rain to stop. When the rain subsided, they returned to play happily even though the paddy fields that had previously been dried as the arena had really been back like paddy fields. Defiant Australia PM Turnbull refuses to ‘give in to bullies’ SYDNEY - Defiant Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull vowed not to “give in to bullies” Thursday in the face of a new leadership challenge, but said he will quit politics if his party no longer supports him. Former home affairs minister Peter Dutton, an expolice officer and right-wing conservative, said he was confident he now had the numbers to unseat Turnbull, considered a moderate. And with senior ministers defecting, Turnbull’s near three-year grip on power is tenuous despite surviving a snap ballot on his leadership on Tuesday, winning the vote 48-35. He said Dutton had yet to prove he has majority backing from the Liberal Party -- a requirement for him to force another meeting to have a second crack at the top job ahead of national elections due by mid-2019. If a petition arrives showing that support -- and reports late in the day said Dutton was closing in on his target -- the meeting will be held at midday on Friday (0200 GMT). Turnbull said that if that happens, he will not stand as a leadership candidate and will leave parliament, sparking a by-election which could be problematic for the government which has a wafer-thin one-seat parliamentary majority. I have never done that. I have never given in to bullies, but you can imagine the pressure it’s put people under.” He added that what Australia was witnessing was “a very deliberate effort to pull the Liberal Party further to the right”. Dutton earlier told reporters he had advised Turnbull by phone that “it was my judgement that the majority of the party room no longer supported his leadership”. “As such, I asked him to convene a meeting of the Liberal Party at which I would challenge for the leadership of the parliamentary Liberal Party,” he added. In a major blow, Turnbull’s influential Finance Minister Mathias Cormann, along with the employment and education ministers, then said he no longer had their backing. JAKARTA — Indonesian officials have defended a street parade that involved veiled kindergarteners carrying replica weapons, with police saying they will arrest the person who uploaded a video of the event to Facebook. The video of children dressed head-to-toe in black marching with wooden guns has caused a sensation in Indonesia, which in May suffered one of its worst attacks in years when militants used their children as suicide bombers in the second-largest city, Surabaya. The parade in East Java was one of thousands held across Indonesia last Friday to mark independence. Probolinggo Police Chief Alfian Nurrizal told The Associated Press on Tuesday that police were investigating who uploaded the video. He said it may have been edited to convey the wrong impression. “He or she did not upload the entire footage,” Nurrizal said. “There are allegations of intentionally cutting the footage for a certain purpose.” If the parade was “filmed completely since the beginning, there will be no misunderstanding,” he said. Local media reported that Education and Culture Minister Muhajir Effendy said the parade was misinterpreted and the staff of the school, located inside a local military command, had no intention to instill radicalism in children. It contained many elements, he said, including symbols of Muslims who struggled for Indonesia’s independence and the red and white of Indonesia’s national flag. “It was recorded when these veiled children carried only replica guns,” he told reporters. “In fact, there were themes raised by these children, namely the struggle of Islam. Until finally this piece of video spread on social media and was very biased.” However, the principal of the school apologized. And the head of prevention at the National Counter-Terrorism Agency said public outrage over the incident was a positive sign. “For us, people’s reaction against such a parade was a sign of good awareness about radicalism,” Brig. Firefighters tackle large blaze outside Asian Games venue
A large blaze broke out right next to the Asian Games site in the Indonesian city of Palembang on Tuesday as firefighters scrambled to prevent clouds of smoke affecting competition events. Helicopters scooped up water to douse the flames in fields bordering the sports complex while dozens of firefighters on the ground helped extinguish the blaze, as athletes competed close by in shooting and beach volleyball. Chinese shooter Wang Xiaojing, 26, told AFP that she saw the fire during the trap mixed team final but kept her focus, later taking the bronze medal with teammate Yu Du. A southerly wind helped prevent too much embarrassment for organisers of the world’s second-biggest multi-sport event, blowing the smoke away from the athletes. South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin said at the scene that he was “100 percent confident” that haze would not mar the regional Olympics, adding that 10 fire trucks and a helicopter had been deployed in less than 15 minutes. Palembang is one of two host cities of the Asian Games, along with Jakarta. A couple of buildings housing some of the sport stars directly overlooked the blaze. The threat of haze has been a particularly sensitive issue for officials, with fires and pollution common in the country during peak hot season. The conflagration came on the same day that environmental activists
scaled a huge billboard in central Jakarta to get their anti-pollution message across. Greenpeace members covered it with a mural showing a person wearing a gas mask and the message “#WeBreatheTheSameAir”. North Korea’s O Kang Chol broke down in tears as he dedicated his country’s third weightlifting gold medal of the Asian Games to his mother, who passed away earlier this year. Second-string lifter O screamed and then wept as he took a surprise gold with a 336kg total (151kg snatch/185kg clean and jerk) on Wednesday after North Korea’s number one Kim Myong Hyok crashed out, failing all three attempts at his opening weight. “I could not hold back the tears when I climbed on to the top step of the podium to receive the gold medal,” an emotional O told AFP after he sobbed throughout the medal ceremony and national anthem at the JI Expo Arena in Jakarta. “I was thinking of my motherland, first. But also especially my own mother, who always dreamed of me winning a gold medal in this competition,” he added. Olympic champion Joseph Schooling showed who’s boss as he trounced the competition to successfully defend his 100 metres butterfly title and win Singapore’s first gold medal at the Asian Games on Wednesday. Schooling was a rising star when he won at Incheon 2014 but, returning as one of the region’s premier athletes, he swam a Games-record 51.04sec to beat China’s Li Zhuhao into second place.

Second-string lifter O screamed and then wept as he took a surprise gold with a 336kg total (151kg snatch/185kg clean and jerk) on Wednesday after North Korea’s number one Kim Myong Hyok crashed out, failing all three attempts at his opening weight. “I could not hold back the tears when I climbed on to the top step of the podium to receive the gold medal,” an emotional O told AFP after he sobbed throughout the medal ceremony and national anthem at the JI Expo Arena in Jakarta. “I was thinking of my motherland, first. But also especially my own mother, who always dreamed of me winning a gold medal in this competition,” he added. Woods and Mickelson, who have 19 Major titles between them, will face off at the Shadow Creek Golf Course on November 23, coinciding with Thanksgiving weekend in the United States. The match play duel between the two veterans, a head-to-head meeting that has been mooted repeatedly over the years, will be screened on pay-per-view. “It’s an opportunity for us to bring golf to the masses in prime time during a period where we don’t have much going on in the world of golf,” Mickelson told ESPN on Wednesday.

Defiant Australia PM Turnbull refuses to ‘give in to bullies’ SYDNEY - Defiant Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull vowed not to “give in to bullies” Thursday in the face of a new leadership challenge, but said he will quit politics if his party no longer supports him. Former home affairs minister Peter Dutton, an expolice officer and right-wing conservative, said he was confident he now had the numbers to unseat Turnbull, considered a moderate. And with senior ministers defecting, Turnbull’s near three-year grip on power is tenuous despite surviving a snap ballot on his leadership on Tuesday, winning the vote 48-35. He said Dutton had yet to prove he has majority backing from the Liberal Party -- a requirement for him to force another meeting to have a second crack at the top job ahead of national elections due by mid-2019. If a petition arrives showing that support -- and reports late in the day said Dutton was closing in on his target -- the meeting will be held at midday on Friday (0200 GMT). Turnbull said that if that happens, he will not stand as a leadership candidate and will leave parliament, sparking a by-election which could be problematic for the government which has a wafer-thin one-seat parliamentary majority. Dutton earlier told reporters he had advised Turnbull by phone that “it was my judgement that the majority of the party room no longer supported his leadership”. “As such, I asked him to convene a meeting of the Liberal Party at which I would challenge for the leadership of the parliamentary Liberal Party,” he added. The video of children dressed head-to-toe in black marching with wooden guns has caused a sensation in Indonesia, which in May suffered one of its worst attacks in years when militants used their children as suicide bombers in the second-largest city, Surabaya. The parade in East Java was one of thousands held across Indonesia last Friday to mark independence. Local media reported that Education and Culture Minister Muhajir Effendy said the parade was misinterpreted and the staff of the school, located inside a local military command, had no intention to instill radicalism in children. It contained many elements, he said, including symbols of Muslims who struggled for Indonesia’s independence and the red and white of Indonesia’s national flag. “It was recorded when these veiled children carried only replica guns,” he told reporters. “In fact, there were themes raised by these children, namely the struggle of Islam. Until finally this piece of video spread on social media and was very biased.” However, the principal of the school apologized. And the head of prevention at the National Counter-Terrorism Agency said public outrage over the incident was a positive sign. “For us, people’s reaction against such a parade was a sign of good awareness about radicalism,” Brig. Gen. Hamli told AP. “In the past, maybe people didn’t care about these kinds of activities,” he said, “but now at least people were concerned that it was inappropriate activities for these children and they responded immediately.” Nurrizal said the provincial police’s cyber unit is helping to track down the video uploader. After Jakarta’s minority Christian governor was convicted of blasphemy last year and imprisoned, police also prosecuted the individual who helped trigger massive street protests against the governor by posting a video online of him making offending comments. Firefighters tackle large blaze outside Asian Games venue
A large blaze broke out right next to the Asian Games site in the Indonesian city of Palembang on Tuesday as firefighters scrambled to prevent clouds of smoke affecting competition events. Helicopters scooped up water to douse the flames in fields bordering the sports complex while dozens of firefighters on the ground helped extinguish the blaze, as athletes competed close by in shooting and beach volleyball. Chinese shooter Wang Xiaojing, 26, told AFP that she saw the fire during the trap mixed team final but kept her focus, later taking the bronze medal with teammate Yu Du. A southerly wind helped prevent too much embarrassment for organisers of the world’s second-biggest multi-sport event, blowing the smoke away from the athletes. South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin said at the scene that he was “100 percent confident” that haze would not mar the regional Olympics, adding that 10 fire trucks and a helicopter had been deployed in less than 15 minutes. Palembang is one of two host cities of the Asian Games, along with Jakarta. A couple of buildings housing some of the sport stars directly overlooked the blaze. The threat of haze has been a particularly sensitive issue for officials, with fires and pollution common in the country during peak hot season. The art of Rudat is still preserved and passed down for generations at Saren Jawa village, Budakeling, Karangasem. This art is danced at various celebrations, such as weddings and Mauludan fest. A coach of Rudat at the (MI) Nurulhidayah Islamic Elementary School from Saren Jawa, Komang Samsuhari, said that he is often invited to make performance at wedding events. According to Samsuhari, who is also a principal at the local MI, he specially trains children. In the meantime, the adult Rudat art troupe consisting of high school students is also taught by his father H. Ahmad Astari, who is also the hamlet chief of Saren Jawa. He said that there are only three Rudat arts in Karangasem. Other than at Saren Jawa, this art also exists at Islamic kampongs like the Sindu, Sidemen. The Rudat dance at Saren Jawa and Sindu shows a similarity. “Perhaps the Muslims of Saren Jawa and Sindu originate of the same region, equally from
Java. While that of Kecicang originates from Sasak, Lombok,” he said. Aside from Rudat dance, there is also Burdah art. According to Samsuhari, it is the only one in Karangasem. Burdah contains the praise to the Prophets. “We always preserve the arts and customs. So

The Hindu community in Bali which always preserves its ancestral culture has various unique and delicious traditional cakes or jaje. There is jaje purely the result of creative process of the community, while the others are the result of acculturation with other regional cultures or even that of other countries. Whatever the cake is, it remains to be preserved amidst of Balinese society until now. Even, its existence is always associated with ceremonial activities and Hindu ritual on the Island of the Gods. For example, one of them is jaje cerorot. Optionally, it is often named the jaje blukbuk, usually served when the Hindu community is carrying out a wedding ceremony in the process of proposing. Jaje cerorot is accompanied with a pillow-like cake. In Bali, this cake belongs to snack made from local (Balinese) rice flour combined with brown sugar and salt. On that account, it has a brownish red color. Cerorot is shaped with young coconut leaf wrap resembling a cone. For children, this cake is often referred to as the trumpet cake because the wrap is like a trumpet. There is a special technique for eating this cake. If people do not know, they will open the pin (bamboo pin to button the wrap) and then eat the soft and creamy cake. For those who already know the technique of eating it will push on the tip at the lower end of the young coconut leaf pointing to the top, so that the content of the cake appears. Just press and adjust how long we are able to chew it. If you eat a little, then push it a little too, and if you can eat at once, then push it full. Once again, to take out the content fully, push the
pointed end of the wrapper so that the content comes out. There is no need to open the curd of the wrap when eating the cake. Lately, this cake is usually used for refreshment served for guests to accompany the drinks like coffee or tea. It is usually easy to get as widely sold in traditional markets and cake shops. Unlike before, if there was no wedding ceremony, this was not made. Unfortunately, this sweet tasting cake can only last for one day. The ingredients used to make the jaje cerorot are local rice, brown sugar and salt (to taste). First of all, the rice is washed clean, and then soaked overnight. After that, resume and make it into flour. In the past, the making of flour in the traditional way was pounded with pestle in the mortar. Then, sieve the flour. This traditionally made flour makes the cake taste better when compared to flour made by factory. Brown sugar is then liquefied with hot water and then filtered as well. Next, add flour into the cold brown sugar liquid with the addition of enough salt. To prepare the wrap, make the packaging from young coconut leaf. Remove the stick of the leaf, fold at one of the ends and then twist circularly resembling a cone. After the coconut leaf wrap has been made, the mixture is poured into the wrapper. Be careful, do not let it be full because when steamed it can melt and fall. Finally, steam them until cooked (for approximately 20 minutes). To check whether the cake is already cooked, insert a palm stick into the steamed dough. If the dough is not sticky when being pulled, it means the cake is already cooked. If it has been cooked, take out the cake and it is ready to be served. (kmb)

Hundreds of children played so cheerfully, shouted and even clapped their friends to encourage. Not afraid of being muddy, exposed to rain and sunlight, they were always happy and laughing so happily. It is the atmosphere of the Festival ke Uma held for two days (Jun. 24-25) at Subak Uma Ole, Ole, Marga Dauh Puri village, Marga, Tabanan. They initially did not know each other, but after joining the game, they came into intimate atmosphere, happiness and full of togetherness. Space and time seem to have no limit to perform activities. Nature and environment of paddies are very friendly providing various tools and means for them to play. Children did not only entertain by seeing the festival alone, but were also given the opportunity to participate.
Everything served on the show is not to be watched, but to be enjoyed together. The children, are mostly from Ole hamlet, coalesced into Buratwangi Studio and Wintang Rare Studio, those from other areas such as Geluntung village, Kukuh and Penebel (Tabanan), Mengwi (Badung), Denpasar, Karangasem and Buleleng. “We designed a participative festival, where visitors can participate in the activity not just serve as spectator,” said the Coordinator, I Putu Edi Novalia Artha. Festival ke Uma presents various types of traditional games divided into two categories namely exhibition and competition. The exhibition shows megandu, medempul, mapoh-pohan, kancing lait, obek-obek uang, colek-colek tain belek, tangklak-tingklik and gala-gala. The kinds of game con-
tested include metimbang, nyuun sigih, matulupan, paid upih and megandong di nyanyad (mud). The second day was flushed by rain, but no children complained and protested against nature, no one thought about the rain-stopper or the cloud-breaking laser beam. Players of the show looked like farmers, receiving abundant water and sunshine with gratitude. The children faithfully waited for the rain to stop. When the rain subsided, they returned to play happily even though the paddy fields that had previously been dried as the arena had really been back like paddy fields. In addition to traditional games, it was also filled with yoga workshop by IGS Raka Panji Tisna, herbal medicine workshop by Bagus Arya (Padma Herbal) and workshop of making kites from Buratwangi art studio. The workshop involved the
community from children to adults. “This festival also has a vision to invite children and society to cultivate a clean and healthy life by reducing the use of materials from plastic,” said Putu Edi. In the evening, the Festival ke Uma was also enlivened with the

Taiwan marks 60 years since China attack as tensions rise
OJK inaugurates the operation of OJK Infinity
DENPASAR - The Financial Services Authority (OJK) inaugurated the operation of the OJK Innovation Center for Digital Financial Technology (OJK Infinity) on Monday (Aug. 20). OJK Infinity aims to build a fintech ecosystem into a part of the national financial system benefiting the community and encouraging economic growth. “Through OJK Infinity, the fintech industry is expected to be able to provide innovative, effective and efficient financial services while still prioritizing consumer protection,” said Wimboh Santoso, OJK’s Board of Commissioners, in the launch of the OJK Infinity, on Monday (Aug. 20). The establishment of OJK Infinity is part of the OJK’s digital financial vision, namely providing effective, efficient and useful services; supporting financial inclusion; and improving community welfare. OJK Infinity will serve as a forum for discussion and collaboration between the industry, regulators, government, academicians and other innovation hubs to reach the three functions of the OJK Infinity. It will facilitate regulatory sandbox as a Fintech incubator to balance innovation with consumer protection and serves as an innovation hub for the development of the Digital Financial Industry (IKD) as well as the development of the IKD ecosystem as a whole. As an educational center for financial service players, consumers and academicians will become IKD activists and Indonesian economic players in the future. In carrying out these three functions, the OJK will
cooperate in terms of exchanging information and resources with various stakeholders, including the ministry and state institutions, as well as all financial service industry players, associations and universities to form a comprehensive digital financial ecosystem. The OJK Infinity can also be used by general public to obtain information regarding the IKD, while the IKD players will know more about the IKD regulations. In the future, OJK Infinity will expand its collaboration with educational institutions and the private sector having commitments that are in line with the development of the digital financial sector, one of which is that OJK makes collaboration with Telkom University through a Memorandum of Understanding within the scope of research and the establishment of a Master Education program in the IKD field. The OJK will issue an OJK regulation on Digital Financial Innovation that will become a legal instrument to protect all innovations in the digital financial sector. The OJK Regulation is established based on the need for a legal basis for financial innovation that currently exists in the community so that it can provide wider benefits for the community and protect the

TABANAN - The ngejot or tradition of sharing is not only carried out on Hindu religious days. Muslims, especially in Tabanan, have the same tradition. When celebrating the Eid al-Adha, the Muslims at Tunggal Sari hamlet, Delod Peken, Tabanan, has the tradition of slaughtering or distributing sacrificial meat to non-Muslim residents living around the Tabanan Great Mosque on Wednesday (Aug. 22). This sharing tradition is one form of religious tolerances carried out for a long time. Dozens of kilograms of beef and mutton were distributed on the Eid al-Adha. Chairperson of the Tabanan Great Mosque sacrifice committee, Muhammad Badrian, said the
program began at 13:00 Local Time. Some members of the sacrificial committee at the Tabanan Great Mosque moved to the homes of non-Muslim residents with the aim of distributing sacrificial meat after they said Id prayers at the local mosque. Badrian continued that the distribution of sacrificial meat is a form of interfaith tolerance on the Island of Bali. He added the sacrificial animals collected in the Tabanan Great Mosque amounted to 23 goats and 5 cows. From this number was obtained a total of 1,200 packages of sacrificial meat and have been distributed to residents. Badrian said the moment becomes a form of interfaith tolerance in Tabanan that had been well
established. “It becomes a concern among the Tunggal Sari community,” he said. Badrian, who is also the neighborhood chief, said the interfaith tradition of distributing sacrificial meat at Tunggal Sari hamlet has taken place since 1950 and so far the tradition is still practiced every Eid al-Adha with the aim of strengthening religious tolerance. Meanwhile, the Hindus welcomed the way of Muslims to maintain tolerance between religious communities. “Every year, we always get sacrificial meat during the celebration of Eid al-Adha,” said one of the residents who received a package of sacrificial meat, I Made Suastika. Flood-stricken Kerala angry after UAE $100m offer rejected
KINMEN - Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen called for unity and vowed not to bow to pressure from Beijing on Thursday as the island marked the 60th anniversary of a deadly Chinese artillery attack. The anniversary of the assault on tiny Kinmen island, known as the “823 bombardment”, comes as China steps up pressure on selfruling Taiwan, which it sees as part of its territory to be reunified. China’s People’s Liberation Army fired 470,000 shells at Kinmen and nearby islets in 1958, killing 618 servicemen and civilians in an attack that lasted 44 days. Kinmen is part of Taiwan, but lies less than two miles off mainland China, at the narrowest part of the Taiwan Strait. “When we remember the ‘823 bombardment’ 60 years later, we will not forget the spirit of solidarity,” Tsai said on her Facebook page. “When we face diplomatic suppression we will not forget how strong our country can be when we are united,” she added, saying that while Taiwanese people cherished peace they would not take national security for granted. Tensions with Beijing have worsened under Tsai because she refuses to acknowledge that Taiwan is part of “one China”. In response, China has ramped up military drills and poached Taiwan’s official diplomatic allies -- El Salvador became the third this year to switch ties from Taipei to Beijing on Tuesday.
At an anniversary ceremony held in a former army bunker and combat centre in Kinmen, Taiwan’s Defence Minister Yen De-fa said today’s troops in Taiwan must again make “combat preparations” in the face of what he described as a growing military threat from China. Hundreds of soldiers, relatives and veterans, some in their 80s and 90s, gathered at a Kinmen cemetery where victims of the 1958 bombardment were buried. Lai Jen-hsien, 83, remembered the attack. “We were joking it was firecrackers, but then all of a sudden it was a rain of them (artillery),” said Lai, who was in the combat engineer battalion in Kinmen at the time. He told AFP he did not think history would repeat itself on Kinmen. “Peace is priceless. War is ruthless. We should try our best to peacefully handle the fate of people from both sides of the (Taiwan) Strait,” Lai said. China has sought to bring Taiwan back into the fold since nationalist troops fled to the island after their defeat by communist forces on the mainland in 1949. KOCHI - Leaders of flood-stricken Kerala state angrily hit out at India’s national government Thursday for rejecting a $100 million aid offer from the United Arab Emirates as more people entered relief camps to escape the devastation. More than 1.3 million people have now packed into temporary camps even though the floods, which have left at least 420 dead and missing, are fast receding. The New Delhi government infuriated the Kerala administration by rejecting the cash offer from the wealthy Gulf state. Kerala’s Finance Minister Thomas Isaac accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government of adopting a “dog-in-the-manger” policy by refusing the money. The communist minister added in a Twitter attack that if the right wing national government takes a “negative stance” on the UAE offer “they should compensate Kerala.” Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan called for “high level” talks with the national government on the dispute. There are an estimated three million Indians in the UAE, with
many from Kerala which has a large Muslim population. India’s foreign ministry announced late Wednesday however that the government would stick to its policy of “meeting the requirements for relief and rehabilitation through domestic efforts” and not accept money from foreign governments. It added that outside money could only be donated through Indian-origin individuals or foundations. India has a record of refusing foreign aid after disasters, turning down foreign help after the 2004 tsunami, which killed thousands in India. Experts said Indian governments want to prove they can handle any emergency themselves. The UAE offer was higher than the $97 million so far given by the central government to handle the
floods which state authorities estimate have caused damage worth more than $3 billion. Australian eco-friendly ‘Clothes Library’ fights fast fashion
IN a small shop along one of Sydney’s busiest streets, Sarah Freeman is encouraging Australians to slow down and break their addiction to fast fashion.
Shocked by the speed at which Australians buy and throw away cheap garments, she is trying to harness an ancient concept -- libraries -- to persuade shoppers to rent instead of purchase clothes. “Today’s society just seem to wear clothes like condoms. They wear them once and they throw them away,” the passionate vintage garment aficionado told AFP at her Clothes Library in the inner suburb of Potts Point. “That’s not how clothes are supposed to be designed. The clothes nowadays are manufactured for six wears, I think, which is terrible.” Globally, clothing production doubled from 2000-14, with the number of garments bought each year by consumers soaring by 60 percent, according to consulting firm McKinsey & Company. A booming part of the industry, including in Australia, is fast fashion, which quickly turns catwalk designs into apparel sold at low or ultra-low prices and easily accessible via online sites. In Australia, where the demand for textiles is one of the highest per capita in the world, the fast fashion sector grew by 19.5 percent over five years to Aus$1.8 billion (US$1.4 billion) in 2017-18, research firm IBISWorld reported. The rock bottom prices for consumers contrast with the high cost paid by the environment. Tonnes of cheap clothes are churned out every year in developing countries, using up copious amounts of energy and resources and polluting waterways near factories with toxic chemicals. The materials used are often synthetic and non-biodegradable, meaning even washing can be hazardous, with some textiles shedding plastic micro-fibres that make their way to water catchments and oceans in consumer countries like Australia. In recent months, the devastating impact of waste has made headlines after China, Australia’s biggest market for recycling waste, cracked down on foreign imports. Beijing’s restrictions on “contaminated” recycled materials including fabric has forced Australians to think about how much waste they produce and galvanised efforts to explore more sustainable approaches. Producers have been proactive with natural fibres -- Australia is a key supplier of wool and high-quality cotton -- Australian Fashion Council chief executive David Giles-Kaye told AFP. Retailers including major player Cotton On are pledging to make their manufacturing chains transparent and ethical. At Melbourne’s Deakin University, researchers won support from Swedish mega-retailer H&M to develop “circular denim”, where old jeans are used to colour new ones, reducing the impact on landfills and of dye run-off. St Vincent’s has joined the efforts at the recycling level, examining better ways to sort donated clothes into different fibre types and repurpose garments to extend their life-cycle. “We have to become a lot... smarter and really use technology to try and break things down into their base form so that things can actually be reused and we can become a true circular economy,” the charity’s retail development manager Jacqui Dropulic told AFP. Although the efforts could lead to significant change within the fashion industry, Giles-Kaye believes the key to solving the issue ultimately lies with consumers and their desire for even quicker and cheaper clothing. “It’s still very much a fringe movement... When consumers continue to want more product at a lower price it really drives the producers into less sustainable areas of manufacturing,” he said. Freeman is convinced that if concepts like hers allowing shoppers to borrow and return quality secondhand clothes for a small monthly subscription fee take off, people power can make a difference. “Hopefully it will catch on and people will start being more conscious and just make an effort to not go out and purchase the fast fashion items,” she said. “I mean if we stop demanding it, then they (retailers) have to stop supplying it.” (afp)

DENPASAR — The impact of the earthquake centered in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) increases. At this time, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Buleleng found six houses at Pegayaman village, Sukasada, heavily damaged. In addition, the compound wall of the Amerta Sari hamlet hall and Melanting Temple at the local village was also damaged by the earthquake.

Actually, the houses were damaged by the first earthquake on Sunday (Aug. 5). Results of the data collection by the TRC of the BPBD Buleleng indicated if the six houses had various damages. The residents having the houses consist of Nyoman Nita, 60, Wayan Jati, 60, Kadek Bagiata 38, Wayan Mastra, 60, Made Gawa, 55, and Made Kadung, 85. From the data collection, the damage includes the cracked wall, collapsed roof and collapsed shrine building. Although their homes suffered severe damage, the villagers do not evacuate by building emergency tents. Meanwhile, the damages to public facilities happened to compound wall and the shrine falling out due to earthquake shock.
Chief Executive of the BPBD Buleleng, Ida Bagus Suadnyana, stated on Wednesday (Aug. 22) that the report of the earthquake at Amerta Sari hamlet, Pegayaman, was indeed late in entering the BPBD. Moreover, the damage was barely monitored because the BPBD had not received any data from village official. However, last Wednesday there was a report on the damage, so the TRC personnel immediately carried out data collection to the location. From the data collection, it was found that seven houses are damaged by a series of the earthquake. “We have information from the subdistrict, and tomorrow (Aug. 23) we’ll make further assessment,” he said. According to him, temporarily the scattered data on the damages caused by the earthquake are included in the data on the damages of houses and public facilities having been collected previously. Later on, the data will also be submitted to the BNPB Bali or will be submitted back to the central BNPB. Until now, it is waiting for further instructions related to the requests for the assistance to handle damages caused by the earthquake. Meanwhile, the BNPB Bali has been checking the damage and it just needs to complete the data of the victims affected by the earthquake. “We continuously input the data to be submitted to the province or followed up to central government. The 2018 Boost Sanur Village Festival was held on Wednesday, August 22nd. The first day was enlivened by the Jukung race until Indra Lesmana’s musician performance with his new group.

Because we support it as an icon of tourism on Sanur Beach,” he said. The competition involved 50 participants from 5 groups. Each group sought 5 best to compete in the final. “There are 25 participants that will compete in final. They have to cross a distance of about 8 kilometers by starting and finishing at Segara Ayu Beach,” he added. Gusde, who is also Chair of Denpasar’s Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI) Denpasar and Chairman of the Denpasar’s Tourism Development Agency (BPPD), said that besides the Jukung race there were also workshop activities and various other activities. Including, entertainments on the main stage which is always awaited by visitors. Since the afternoon, the main stage has been filled with a variety of entertainment including Balaram Ethnic Fussion, Cisjis Dancesport Sanur, Sangaji Musik Indonesia, Ratrocker, Gambleer, fashion shows, and ballet performances from Sanur. In addition there is also the appearance of Keva Amir, one of the participants who is currently following the competition for The Voice Kids Indonesia Seasons 3.
The most awaited performance was Indra Lesmana Project (ILP), a new group of progressive metal music genre initiated by jazz musician Indra Lesmana. He said, the formation of ILP was inspired by the eruption of Mount Agung 2017, while SVF which carried the Mandala Giri theme was also an effort to refocus the attention of the audience to Mount Agung which became a spiritual center in Bali. “Let us make the eruption of Mount Agung a creative energy that makes us united, mutual cooperation, and maintaining the preservation of Mount Agung which is a spiritual center in Bali,” said Indra. The ceremony for the opening of the SVF Boost will be carried out by Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya, Thursday night. Shaken by earthquake, Dalem Temple’s wantilan hall of Bunutin collapses BANGLI - A 7-magnitude earthquake that returned to shake Bali on Sunday night (Aug.19) resulted in damages to buildings at a number of points. In the home village of the regent of Bangli, namely Bunutin village, Kintamani, a wantilan hall standing in the local Dalem Temple area collapsed. Severity of the earthquake that occurred several times from that noon also caused the rear wall of the building belonging to a resident at Tamanbali village to collapse. Headman of Bunutin, I Made Subrata, when contacted on Monday afternoon (Aug. 20) justified the incident. He said the collapse of the wantilan building at Dalem Temple occurred shortly after the earthquake striking around 23:00 Local Time. Severity of the earthquake shocks caused the roof of the building to collapse and several pillars to be broken. “The roof fell out. As consequence, the wantilan building cannot be used at all,” he explained. According to Subrata, the collapse of the wantilan building, which had just been completed two years ago, is alleged to happen because the structure of the land and construction of the building experienced a shift after being shaken by the earthquake for many times since last August 5. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported due to the incident because the earthquake occurred at night. “This wantilan is a versatile building. It can be used for cockfight arena, dance stage and venue of cultural activities,” he explained. He added that due to the damage to the 27x20 meters building, the material losses that had to be borne by the local villagers reached IDR 1.2 billion.

Rai said that the broken wall of her bale occurred just after the earthquake shook on Sunday afternoon. The broken wall material also hit the warehouse behind it. “Having been shaken by the first earthquake, some parts of the wall began to crack. Actually I want to repair it, but I have no time before it broke down because it was rocked by subsequent earthquake yesterday (Sunday) afternoon,” she said. Rai added there were no family members or valuables affected by the collapsed materials because since few days before the northern pavilion building formerly occupied by his mother-in-law has been emptied. Separately, the Chief Executive Officer of the Bangli Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Wayan Karmawan, accompanied by the Head of Emergency and Logistics Section, Ketut Agus Sutapa, said that in addition to impacting damages in the two locations, the earthquake that occurred on Sunday night also resulted in destruction of four houses at Undisan village, Tembuku. New sex charge against Spacey: US prosecutors LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles district attorney’s office has received a second sexual assault complaint against Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey, whose acting career has nosedived following allegations by more than a dozen men in the United States and Britain. “A case of sexual assault was filed yesterday (21/8) in our office by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, involving Kevin Spacey, and is under review,” Greg Risling with the prosecutors’ office told AFP Wednesday. A separate investigation was opened back in April for a complaint about an alleged assault in 1992 involving a man. Risling did not specify details about this new complaint, or the status of the previous one. The two-time Academy Awardwinner has seen allegations against him pile up on the heels of the
#MeToo movement, which began with the fall of Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. Spacey also has open investigations in London, where he directed The Old Vic Theater between 2004 and 2015, and in Nantucket, an island resort near Boston. The first report that was made public was that of actor Anthony Rapp, 46, who claimed that the actor sexually abused him at age 14, back in 1986. Spacey apologized to Rapp, claiming not to remember the incident, but remained silent as accusations against him mushroomed. One actor anonymously told the Vulture portal that Spacey tried to rape him in 1984, when he was 14 years old. French rappers freed after brawl shuts Paris airport
PARIS - Two of France’s biggest rap stars were released on bail Thursday after a brawl between their entourages forced a partial shutdown of a Paris airport.

The rumble between bitter rivals Booba and Kaaris in the departures hall of Orly airport three weeks ago was filmed by holidaymakers on their phones, as the two groups fought in a duty-free shop. A judge later ordered that the rappers be locked up until September 6 because of the “persistent animosity between the two groups”. But an appeal court in Paris on Thursday overruled the decision, freeing the rappers and eight members of their respective posses on bail. It was set at 30,000 euros ($34,700) for the two artists, who were also ordered to stay away from each other and to hand over
their passports. A ninth follower had earlier been freed by a local court near the airport. The two rappers, who were on their way to a concert in Barcelona, have waged a feud over social media where some users mocked the duo and called on them to settle differences with their fists. - ‘Perfume used as weapons’ Airport bosses said the brawl had “endangered the lives of others”, and lodged a public order complaint against the singers after the ruckus forced officials to temporarily shut down the departures hall.
The rappers have been held in separate prisons near Paris since the fight on August 3. Booba, aka Elie Yaffa, reportedly fell out with Kaaris, 38, after failing to support him in a dispute with fellow French artist Rohff. Rohff was sentenced in November to five years in jail for aggravated assault in a fashion boutique owned by 41-year-old Booba. Kaaris’ lawyers Arash Derambarsh and Yacine Yakouti told a court earlier this month that the singer was “taken aside by Booba, who insulted his child and his wife”, before several people “jumped on him”. Rare hurricane warning as Hawaii braces for major storm
Residents of Hawaii were bracing for a rare landfall by a powerful hurricane as they stocked up on water, food and emergency supplies. Hurricane Lane, which weakened slightly to a category 4 storm overnight, is packing 155-mile (250-kilometre) -per-hour winds and was expected to reach the archipelago’s Big Island by nightfall Wednesday. President Donald Trump urged residents to prepare for the storm, which was expected to bring torrential rains, high winds and dangerous surf. “Everyone in the path of #HurricaneLane please prepare yourselves, heed the advice of State and local officials, and follow @NWSHonolulu for updates. Be safe!” he tweeted. The National Weather Service said a hurricane warning has been issued for Maui County and Hawaii County while a hurricane watch was in effect in Kauai and Oahu.
“The center of Lane will track dangerously close to the Hawaiian Islands from Thursday through Saturday,” it said. It added that though Lane is forecast to weaken in the next 48 hours it will remain a dangerous hurricane as it nears the Hawaiian Islands. “Lane is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 10 to 15 inches (250 to 380 millimetres) with isolated amounts greater than 20 inches over the Hawaiian Islands,” the NWS said. It added that regardless of the
exact track of the storm, the state should brace for the potentially lifethreatening impacts. - Bracing for the worst “It’s not a question of whether they’re going to be hit or not,” Brock Long, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) told a press briefing. “They’re going to see impacts from this storm.” He said the priority at this point was to ensure residents were prepared for the storm. “Right now the priority that we
have is life safety,” he said. “We are asking citizens to proactively heed all of the warning order information coming from the governor and the local county emergency management agencies within the state.” Hurricanes rarely make landfall in Hawaii and the last major storm to strike the state was nearly three decades ago, when Hurricane Iniki barrelled into the island of Kauai, leaving six people dead and causing billions of dollars in damage. In preparation for the latest storm, state officials have closed schools and public offices in the counties affected while residents rushed to stores to stock up on water, food and other supplies. Many were also boarding up their houses.
Governor David Ige on Tuesday declared a state of emergency on Big Island to help provide relief for damage from the hurricane. “Hurricane Lane is not a well-behaved hurricane,” he said in a statement. “I’ve not seen such dramatic changes in the forecast track as I’ve seen with this storm.
