With estimated ticket sales of $35.8 million for the three-day weekend, “Equalizer” edged out another new sequel, star-studded “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations. In his new film, Washington again plays a former black-ops agent -- and now soft-spoken Lyft driver -- who is drawn back into action to avenge a friend’s death. Director Antoine Fuqua also made “Training Day,” which earned Washington a best actor Oscar nod. Industry watchers had expected Universal’s “Mamma Mia!” to open atop the box office, but its ticket sales of $34.4 million were “by no means a disappointment” at 22 percent above the original film’s opening, according to Hollywood Reporter. With a star-studded cast -- including Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan -- the film is set after the events of the original “Mamma Mia!” but uses flashbacks to fill in the story of Streep’s carefree character on the sun-splashed Greek island where an ABBA soundtrack is never far away. In third spot was “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” from Sony, which took in $23.2 million. The animated comedy, whose voice cast includes Adam Sandler and Selena Gomez, follows Count Dracula and his family as they get away from their hotel for their own vacation. Slipping from second last week to fourth was “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” the 20th release in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, at $16.1 million. It has ex-con Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) struggling to balance home life and Ant-Man duties as he and old flame Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly, alias the Wasp), take up an urgent new mission. And in fifth, also from Disney, was “Incredibles 2,” at $11.5 million, which earlier in the month pushed past Pixar stablemate “Finding Dory” as the top-grossing animated film of all time. (afp)

Inmates at an Indonesian prison paid for luxury cells equipped with air conditioning, flatscreen TVs and private washrooms, anti-graft officials said, in the graft-riddled country’s latest corruption scandal. Jail staff allegedly took bribes of 200-500 million rupiah ($14,000-$35,000) from inmates to renovate cells and supply banned mobile phones or even let them temporarily leave prison, Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said. Anti-graft agents arrested five people connected to the scandal at Sukamiskin prison, including inmates and the warden who got cash and a pair of vehicles to look the other way, it added. A raid on Sunday turned up several cells that featured modern bathrooms with hot showers, fullsized refrigerators, coffee makers,

microwave ovens and stereo loudspeakers, the KPK said. “We apologise to the Indonesian people,” Sri Puguh Budi Utami, the director general of Indonesia’s prisons, told reporters late Sunday. “We’re very sorry that we still have not been able to maximise our monitoring systems.” A former tax official now serv-

ing time at Sukamiskin was once photographed watching a tennis tournament in Bali and had even travelled overseas on a fake passport when he was supposed to be in another jail. The prison’s other inmates include a former chief justice and exhouse speaker Setya Novanto, who was convicted in April of taking

millions of dollars in kickbacks and bribes linked to the national roll-out of government ID cards. They were not among the inmates or prison staff arrested Sunday. Indonesian prisons are more commonly known for their poor conditions and outbreaks of violence. But it is an open secret that the rich and powerful can buy luxury on the inside, prompting the government to warn last year that it would jail guards or other staff caught taking bribes from inmates in exchange for special treatment.

In one of the highest-profile cases, a businesswoman imprisoned for bribery had a cell with a spring mattress, couch, refrigerator, television and air conditioning -- and adjoining karaoke room. French drug smuggler home after being held 18 years in Indonesia

A Frenchman detained for 18 years after trying to smuggle drugs into Bali arrived in Geneva on Sunday and was on his way home after being deported in a case that sparked outrage in France over Indonesia’s tough narcotics laws. Police arrested Michael Blanc on the day after Christmas in 1999 at the tropical island’s airport with 3.8 kilogrammes (8.4 pounds) of hashish hidden inside scuba diving canisters. Blanc, now 45, was given a life sentence -- narrowly escaping the death penalty which has been handed to some other foreign drug traffickers, including two members of the notorious Bali Nine who were executed in 2015. His prison term was later cut to 20 years, and in 2014 Blanc won something that few foreigners get in Indonesia -- parole, though he was not allowed to leave the country immediately. The three-year parole period ended in July 2017, and he then had to wait another year while on probation. The former cook was escorted by immigration officials to Jakarta airport Saturday accompanied by his mother, Helene Le Touzey, who gave up her life in France to spend nearly two decades in Indonesia campaigning for his release. “He has indeed arrived in Geneva,” Martial Saddier, a parliamentary lawmaker for Blanc’s native Haute-Savoie region in western France who is close

to Blanc’s family, told AFP. He was met by his father JeanClaude Blanc and other relatives out of sight of the journalists gathered to cover his return, and they later left by a side door. “I may be almost as nervous as he is,” Jean-Claude Blanc told AFP while waiting for his son’s plane to land. Saddier said Blanc was going to remain several days in an undisclosed location. “He’s going to recover from these past nearly 20 years before making any public appearances,” he said. - Years of efforts The life sentence handed out by an Indonesian court, which rejected Blanc’s claim that he was carrying the drug-filled gear for a friend, was criticised in France as unduly harsh. The country has some of the world’s toughest laws against drug use and trafficking, and several convicted suspects have been executed since President Joko Widodo took office in 2014. Paris raised the issue at the highest levels, with the thenprime minister Francois Fillon bringing it up during a visit to Indonesia in 2011. In 2008, Blanc’s sentence was cut to

20 years thanks in large part to his mother’s efforts. She later helped secure her son’s parole in 2014, despite the fact that Indonesian law does not usually allow conditional release of foreigners after serving just two-thirds of their sentence. More than 70 people, including 42 foreigners, are facing the firing squad for drug offences, according to the Coalition for the Abolition of Death Penalty in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). Among them were foreign nationals, including two Bali Nine members arrested in 2005 for an attempt to smuggle heroin from Indonesia to Australia. The executions of Australian ringleaders Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran sparked diplomatic outrage and a call to abolish Indonesia’s death penalty. Although Jakarta suspended executions last year, Widodo has said the country is facing a “drug emergency” and previously ordered police to shoot traffickers who resist arrest. High-profile cases like that of Australian national Schapelle Corby, who spent more than nine years behind bars for smuggling marijuana into Bali, have stoked concern that Indonesia is becoming a drug destination. Rolled up by waves, a World Bank senior economist dies MANGUPURA —World Bank senior economist, Aakansha Pande, 38, was rolled up by waves and drowned while swimming on the beach in front of Double Six, Seminyak, Kuta, Badung, on Saturday (Jul. 21). The victim was successfully rescued by Badung lifesaver officers, but she breathed her last on the way to Siloam Hospital, Kuta.

As the information compiled on Sunday (Jul. 22), this American woman stayed at the Hotel Indigo, Seminyak, where during the stay in Bali she was with her husband, Ziad Haider. Around 17:00 local time, the victim with her husband and friends of six people arrived at the scene. Initially, the victim had played with

sand, and then swam to the middle of the sea. Suddenly, a great wave rolled up and drowned the victim. The incident was seen by lifesaver team and directly helped the victim. After being evacuated to the beach, the victim was immediately taken to Siloam Hospital. Upon arrival at the hospital, the medical team immediately conducted a check on

the patient’s condition, checked the response as well as patient’s pulse and breath. In addition, it was also resumed with a heart record, but the victim was in a state of death upon arrival at the hospital. Furthermore, the medical team suggested the victim’s body to be taken to Sanglah Hospital for an autopsy. At 22:30, the victim’s body

was taken to Sanglah Hospital by using an ambulance. Chief of the Denpasar Police, Hadi Purnomo, when asked for his confirmation justified the incident. He said the victim’s body was checked at hospital but no longer existed. “Possibly, it has been taken by her family. She was in Bali in a series of holidays,” he said. (kmb36)

layan started 4,200 years ago with a devastating, 200-year worldwide megadrought. “It marked a quite serious collapse of human agricultural civilizations,” says Phil Gibbard of the International Union of Geological Sciences, which ratified the new ages June 14 and released an up-

dated geologic time scale July 13. The megadrought triggered human crises and migrations ranging from China to the Middle East to India, where the new age’s namesake is located. A stalagmite from a cave in the northeast Indian state of Meghalaya acts as the official time stamp marker for the start of the

age. The drought is also recorded in other geologic sediments and at archaeological sites around the world. The Meghalayan is the first formal geologic time interval in Earth’s 4.6-billion-year history that began at the same time as a global, climatedriven cultural event. (net)

Jupiter has 12 more moons than we knew about — and one is bizarre

ASTRONOMERS have found 12 more moons around Jupiter, and one is really weird. While 11 orbit in the same direction as their nearest neighbors, one doesn’t, potentially putting it on a fatal collision course. “It’s driving down the highway on the wrong side of the road,” says planetary scientist Scott Sheppard of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C. Sheppard and colleagues found the moons while looking for something else entirely: a putative planet that could exist beyond the orbit of Neptune, known colloquially as Planet Nine (SN: 7/23/16, p. 7). During a survey in 2017 of the most distant objects in the solar system using the Victor Blanco 4-meter telescope in Chile, Jupiter happened to be visible in the same area of sky that the team was searching during one of its

observing runs. “Might as well kill two birds with one stone,” Sheppard thought. The researchers found a dozen objects moving around the sun at the same rate as Jupiter. Followup observations confirmed the moons’ existence and orbits: two inner moons that orbit in the same direction that Jupiter spins, nine outer moons that orbit the planet in the opposite direction and one oddball traveler. The researchers announced two of the moons in 2017 and the remaining 10 on July 16. The motions of all but the oddball are normal for Jovian moons, which now number a whopping 79. Scientists think that’s because the inner moons formed from a disk of gas and dust that orbited the giant planet in the solar system’s early days, similar to how the planets formed around the sun (SN: 5/12/18, p. 28). The outer moons were prob-

ably free-floating space rocks captured when they came too close, and their opposite orbit was set by the direction that they approached Jupiter from. But one moon broke the mold. This rock, which the team calls Valetudo for the Roman goddess of health and hygiene, is tiny, only about a kilometer across. It orbits in the same direction as Jupiter’s spin, but alongside the farther-out retrograde moons. As a result, Valetudo is probably doomed to collide with one or more of the other moons someday. The researchers are still calculating when, but they expect it to occur sometime between 100 million and a billion years from now. Valetudo may be the last remnant of a bigger object that has already withstood several collisions, or of a family of moons that has since been smashed to smithereens. “It’s probably the

largest surviving member, if not the only one,” Sheppard says. Such nonconformist satellites are not rare, notes planetary scientist David Jewitt of UCLA, who was not involved in the new work. “But they are very interest-

ing, because we know that they have been captured by their host planets, but we don’t know how, or from where,” he says. Figuring out what oddballs like Valetudo are made of could help nail those details down. (net)

SEMARAPURA — The high waves occurred in the Badung Strait caused the crossing activities to Nusa Penida Island from the Klungkung mainland area disturbed. Moreover, it had been closed for a few days. This natural condition has an impact on cancellation of accommodation reservations. The owner had to suffer great losses. Secretary of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Klungkung, I Wayan Sukadana, stated on Sunday (Jul. 22) the cancellation of room reservation reached 20 to 30 percent. This has taken place since July 20, exactly with the closing of fast boat activities from the traditional harbor at Kusamba village, Dawan subdistrict and from Sanur, Denpasar. “Information on the crossing services remain confusing whether can cross and cannot. This makes many rooms cancelled,” he explained. Faced with such situation, he said the accommodation owners cannot do much. They just hoped the situation can be getting better soon. “For example, if the weather is fine, the sea condition is calm, hotel occupancy is actually high. Now, it has entered high season,” he said. An accommodation owner in Nusa Lembongan, I Wayan Topik Nusa Putra, said the cancellation has occurred since July 19. “The losses are sure because the room supposed to be occupied becomes empty. Besides, the guests who should stay longer finally check out earlier,” he explained. Not only that, the closure of sea transportation activities also caused the supply of staple goods hampered. “We only rely on sea transportation to deliver goods to Nusa Penida. Like some time ago, it was difficult to find meat, chili and onions,” he said. On Sunday, he said the marine condition has improved. However, there is information telling if a few days ahead there will be potentially longer and high waves. It could affect room reservation. “We have anticipated the difficulties of basic commodities and are worried if the crossing will be closed again,” he added. Head of the Klungkung Transportation Agency, I Nyoman Sucitra, said the fast boat activity has started to open and so does the roro ship to Padangbai Harbor, Karangasem. “Today (Sunday—Ed) is open, the situation in the sea is good, Roro already departed in the morning with passengers,” he explained. However, this official from Tusan village, Banjarangkan, said that according to information from the National Weather Service (BMKG), the adverse waves are potential to occur until July 25. On that account, people are asked to remain vigilant. “Just watch out because the natural situation is difficult to guess,” he pleaded. Previously, the closure of fast boat and roro activities caused the accumulation of passengers in the Nusa Penida Harbor. Similarly, this happened to domestic and foreign tourists. PHUKET - Thailand is in hot pursuit of a cagey crocodile that has made unwelcome appearances off the beaches of resort island Phuket only to slip through the clutches of local authorities. The evasive reptile was first seen near Rawai beach about a week ago but has resurfaced in multiple locations near the beaches on the Andaman Sea. A group of hunters has joined an expanding team trying to track it down. Thawee Thongcha, the mayor of Karon town on the west coast of Phuket, told AFP Monday they had come very close to success. “We almost caught it when it was seen near the beach in Karon, (we were) metres away but it moved quickly back to the sea,” Thawee said.

“We do not yet know where it comes from.” Thailand’s pristine beaches draw millions of tourists a year and Phuket in the southwest is one of the most popular destinations. Thawee said choppy monsoon seas had prevented fishing boats from using nets to capture the creature, which is almost two metres in length. The Siamese crocodile was once ubiquitous across Southeast Asia but is currently listed as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s red list. Thon Thamrongnawasawat, a marine biologist and lecturer at Kasetsart University, said the presence of a crocodile in Phuket meant it was likely a hybrid saltwater version of the species bred

Hong Kong ended the day flat while Seoul and Sydney slid 0.9 percent. But Shanghai jumped more than one percent and Jakarta advanced 0.7 percent. FRANKFURT - New research published by the European Central Bank pushes back against criticism levelled at its 2.4 trillion euro ($2.8 trillion) stimulus program, indicating it did not increase inequality and helped boost poorer households’ income by putting people back to work. The arguments in the paper released Wednesday help counter accusations, particularly from German politicians and news media, that the stimulus program hurt savers by depressing returns and benefited financially wobbly southern European governments such as Italy’s through lower borrowing costs. A headline in the Bild newspaper in December 2015, a few months after the program started, read: “We’ll Never Get Savings Interest Again.” The ECB research — compiled by five economists from the central bank and one outside author — found that pain in one area could be compensated by stimulus gains in other areas, and that employment and wage gains benefited people across all income categories — in Germany as well as in Italy. “Monetary policy in recent years benefited most households and did not contribute to an increase in wealth, income, or consumption inequality,” they wrote. The report does not represent an official stance by the Frankfurt-based bank, which conducts monetary policy for the 19 countries that use the euro currency. Another woman lynched in India after WhatsApp rumours NEW DELHI - A mob lynched a woman in India after rumours circulated on WhatsApp about child kidnappers, police said Monday, days after the messaging firm said it was curbing the forwarding of messages. More than 20 people have been killed in similar incidents in the past two months, leaving both the Indian authorities and Facebookowned WhatsApp scrambling to find a solution in its biggest market. Police said nine people have been arrested and more are being sought after they found the middle-aged woman’s mutilated body near a forest area in the Singrauli district of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh on Sunday. The accused men told police they caught hold of the woman late Saturday after finding her moving suspiciously and seeing a flurry of WhatsApp messages about gangs of child kidnappers in the area, local police chief Riyaz Iqbal told AFP. “We are trying to identify the victim and have circulated her picture to all the police stations,” Singrauli police chief Riyaz Iqbal told AFP. Last Thursday the Indian government threatened WhatsApp with legal action, saying the “medium” for spreading malicious rumours “cannot evade responsibility and accountability”. WhatsApp said the next day it would test limiting the ability of its more than 225 million Indian users to forward messages and remove the “quick forward button” next to media messages. It had already announced new features to help users identify messages that have been forwarded and bought full-page adverts in Indian newspapers with tips on how to spot misinformation. It has however stopped short of acceding to Indian government demands to enable the authorities to trace messages, saying its service would stay “end-to-end encrypted”. Lynchings are nothing new in India, but the spread of smartphones to even the most remote corners has enabled rumours to be shared at lightning speed and in huge volumes. The spate of attacks related to rumours of child kidnapping started last May in the eastern state of Jharkhand with the emergence of a video that has since spread across India. A video clip posted by Canadian media appeared to show a dark-clad man walking on the sidewalk and then turning to aim and fire a handgun. “One female adult has died. One young girl in critical condition,” Toronto police said on Twitter, adding that all 14 victims were shot with a handgun. Police said the suspect was also dead, and Chief Mark Saunders said there had been “an exchange of gunfire.” It was not clear, however, whether the suspect died from police gunfire or killed himself. Search on for two dozen inmates after Indonesia prison break Indonesian authorities are searching for two dozen inmates who escaped from a prison by sawing through the iron bars of a ventilation window, police said Monday. While six inmates were quickly apprehended after the Sunday escape, another 25 are still on the run from Doyo prison, an institution for drug offenders in easternmost Papua province, authorities said. “We have deployed officers to hunt them, secure the borders, the harbour, airport and also to set up extra security behind the prison,” said Jayapura police chief Victor Dean Mackbon. Prison breaks are not uncommon in Indonesia. In May last year, more than 200 inmates escaped in a mass breakout from an overcrowded prison in Sumatra. Another woman lynched in India after WhatsApp rumours NEW DELHI - A mob lynched a woman in India after rumours circulated on WhatsApp about child kidnappers, police said Monday, days after the messaging firm said it was curbing the forwarding of messages. More than 20 people have been killed in similar incidents in the past two months, leaving both the Indian authorities and Facebookowned WhatsApp scrambling to find a solution in its biggest market. Police said nine people have been arrested and more are being sought after they found the middle-aged woman’s mutilated body near a forest area in the Singrauli district of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh on Sunday. The accused men told police they caught hold of the woman late Saturday after finding her moving suspiciously and seeing a flurry of WhatsApp messages about gangs of child kidnappers in the area, local police chief Riyaz Iqbal told AFP. “We are trying to identify the victim and have circulated her picture to all the police stations,” Singrauli police chief Riyaz Iqbal told AFP. Last Thursday the Indian government threatened WhatsApp with legal action, saying the “medium” for spreading malicious rumours “cannot evade responsibility and accountability”. WhatsApp said the next day it would test limiting the ability of its more than 225 million Indian users to forward messages and remove the “quick forward button” next to media messages. It had already announced new features to help users identify messages that have been forwarded and bought full-page adverts in Indian newspapers with tips on how to spot misinformation. It has however stopped short of acceding to Indian government demands to enable the authorities to trace messages, saying its service would stay “end-to-end encrypted”. Lynchings are nothing new in India, but the spread of smartphones to even the most remote corners has enabled rumours to be shared at lightning speed and in huge volumes. The spate of attacks related to rumours of child kidnapping started last May in the eastern state of Jharkhand with the emergence of a video that has since spread across India. TORONTO - Two people including the gunman are dead and 13 wounded in Toronto after a shooting Sunday in the bustling Greektown neighborhood, adding to concern about gun violence in Canada’s largest city. A video clip posted by Canadian media appeared to show a dark-clad man walking on the sidewalk and then turning to aim and fire a handgun. “One female adult has died. One young girl in critical condition,” Toronto police said on Twitter, adding that all 14 victims were shot with a handgun. Police said the suspect was also dead, and Chief Mark Saunders said there had been “an exchange of gunfire.” It was not clear, however, whether the suspect died from police gunfire or killed himself. Saunders said it was too soon to know what the motive was for the rampage in a district of cafes and restaurants. Toronto’s homicide squad was leading the investigation but local media reported the independent Special Investigations Unit, which probes police-involved shootings, had also been notified. Officers, some armed with rifles, sealed off Greektown’s main street, known as the Danforth, after getting the call around 10:00 pm (0200 GMT Monday).

Mayor John Tory said Sunday night’s firearms violence is “evidence of a gun problem” in Toronto. “Guns are too readily available to too many people,” Tory told a news conference. Tory added that details of the latest incident remained sketchy and urged people to stay calm. “We have to figure out what happened here. We don’t know,” he said. Toronto Police statistics show that, to July 14, there had been a total of 220 shootings with 27 fatalities so far this year, against 196 with 17 deaths for all of 2017. Last week, Toronto police started implementing the enforcement component of their “gun violence reduction plan.” That includes around 200 additional officers on shift in particular neighborhoods between the hours of 7:00 pm and 3:00 am — when most shootings occur. Jakarta - The 2018 Asian Games torch relay that is set to commence on July 17 until August 15 will journey through 53 districts in 18 provinces and will be participated by 40 Indonesian legendary athletes, celebrities, and public figures. INASGOC Chairman Erick Thohir stated that the legendary athletes to be involved include Taufik Hidayat, Susy Susanti, Budi Hartono, Yustedjo Tarik, Yayuk Basuki, and Herman Sembalo. “We will commence in India on July 14-July 16 as it was the first host nation for the Asian Games,” said Erick Thohir in Jakarta yesterday, July 12. The torch will travel across historic cities such as Aceh, Mataram, Palembang, Raja Ampat, Banyuwangi, and Bali Province. From India, the torch will travel to Mrapen in Central Java which will be handed over to the

Youth and Sports Minister and Coordinating Minister of Human development and culture. “We want the Asian Games spirit to echo across Indonesia,” said Erick. Search on for two dozen inmates after Indonesia prison break Indonesian authorities are searching for two dozen inmates who escaped from a prison by sawing through the iron bars of a ventilation window, police said Monday. While six inmates were quickly apprehended after the Sunday escape, another 25 are still on the run from Doyo prison, an institution for drug offenders in easternmost Papua province, authorities said. “We have deployed officers to hunt them, secure the borders, the harbour, airport and also to set up extra security behind the prison,” said Jayapura police chief Victor Dean Mackbon. Prison breaks are not uncommon in Indonesia. In May last year, more than 200 inmates escaped in a mass breakout from an overcrowded prison in Sumatra. A month later, four foreign inmates tunnelled themselves out of a prison on the resort island of Bali. The fall in the dollar came as US President Donald Trump attacked Washington’s main trading partners for their currency policies on Friday. “China, the European Union and others have been manipulating their currencies and interest rates lower, while the U.S. is raising rates while the dollars gets stronger and stronger with each passing day - taking away our big competitive edge. As usual, not a level playing field,” Trump tweeted. Trump’s combative stance has compounded fears of an all-out trade and currency war, with the US slapping tariffs on steel and aluminium from the EU, Canada and Mexico, in addition to levies on goods from China worth tens of billions of dollars. In an interview with US channel CNBC broadcast Friday, Trump threatened to impose taxes on all Chinese imports, saying the US has been “ripped off by China for a long time”. Tokyo plunged 1.3 percent -- falling for a third straight trading day -- as a stronger yen hurt exporters, making their products less competitive abroad and eroding repatriated profits. Hong Kong ended the day flat while Seoul and Sydney slid 0.9 percent. But Shanghai jumped more than one percent and Jakarta advanced 0.7 percent. FRANKFURT - New research published by the European Central Bank pushes back against criticism levelled at its 2.4 trillion euro ($2.8 trillion) stimulus program, indicating it did not increase inequality and helped boost poorer households’ income by putting people back to work. The arguments in the paper released Wednesday help counter accusations, particularly from German politicians and news media, that the stimulus program hurt savers by depressing returns and benefited financially wobbly southern European governments such as Italy’s through lower borrowing costs. A headline in the Bild newspaper in December 2015, a few months after the program started, read: “We’ll Never Get Savings Interest Again.” The ECB research — compiled by five economists from the central bank and one outside author — found that pain in one area could be compensated by stimulus gains in other areas, and that employment and wage gains benefited people across all income categories — in Germany as well as in Italy. “Monetary policy in recent years benefited most households and did not contribute to an increase in wealth, income, or consumption inequality,” they wrote. The report does not represent an official stance by the Frankfurt-based bank, which conducts monetary policy for the 19 countries that use the euro currency. The bank makes those policies clear in statements after its regular meetings and in news conferences

TOKYO - Japanese officials issued new warnings Monday as a deadly heatwave blankets the country, producing record high temperatures in Tokyo just two years before the city hosts the 2020 Summer Olympics. PHUKET - Thailand is in hot pursuit of a cagey crocodile that has made unwelcome appearances off the beaches of resort island Phuket only to slip through the clutches of local authorities. The evasive reptile was first seen near Rawai beach about a week ago but has resurfaced in multiple locations near the beaches on the Andaman Sea. A group of hunters has joined an expanding team trying to track it down. Thawee Thongcha, the mayor of Karon town on the west coast of Phuket, told AFP Monday they had come very close to success. “We almost caught it when it was seen near the beach in Karon, (we were) metres away but it moved quickly back to the sea,” Thawee said.

“We do not yet know where it comes from.” Thailand’s pristine beaches draw millions of tourists a year and Phuket in the southwest is one of the most popular destinations. Thawee said choppy monsoon seas had prevented fishing boats from using nets to capture the creature, which is almost two metres in length. The Siamese crocodile was once ubiquitous across Southeast Asia but is currently listed as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s red list. Thon Thamrongnawasawat, a marine biologist and lecturer at Kasetsart University, said the presence of a crocodile in Phuket meant it was likely a hybrid saltwater version of the species bred

on a farm, and it was not the first such sighting. “Normally the open sea is not a place where a crocodile would live,” he said. Crocodile numbers in Thailand and Southeast Asia generally have been decimated by habitat loss, commercial hunting for the skin trade and the capture of live reptiles to stock crocodile farms, according to the IUCN. In Thailand there are just a handful of wild populations in central and western national parks. A French tourist was bitten on the leg by a crocodile inside a Thai national park in January last year when she tried to get close to take a selfie. Jupiter has 12 more moons than we knew about — and one is bizarre

ASTRONOMERS have found 12 more moons around Jupiter, and one is really weird. While 11 orbit in the same direction as their nearest neighbors, one doesn’t, potentially putting it on a fatal collision course. “It’s driving down the highway on the wrong side of the road,” says planetary scientist Scott Sheppard of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C. Sheppard and colleagues found the moons while looking for something else entirely: a putative planet that could exist beyond the orbit of Neptune, known colloquially as Planet Nine (SN: 7/23/16, p. 7). During a survey in 2017 of the most distant objects in the solar system using the Victor Blanco 4-meter telescope in Chile, Jupiter happened to be visible in the same area of sky that the team was searching during one of its

observing runs. “Might as well kill two birds with one stone,” Sheppard thought. The researchers found a dozen objects moving around the sun at the same rate as Jupiter. Followup observations confirmed the moons’ existence and orbits: two inner moons that orbit in the same direction that Jupiter spins, nine outer moons that orbit the planet in the opposite direction and one oddball traveler. The researchers announced two of the moons in 2017 and the remaining 10 on July 16. The motions of all but the oddball are normal for Jovian moons, which now number a whopping 79. Scientists think that’s because the inner moons formed from a disk of gas and dust that orbited the giant planet in the solar system’s early days, similar to how the planets formed around the sun (SN: 5/12/18, p. 28). The outer moons were prob-

ably free-floating space rocks captured when they came too close, and their opposite orbit was set by the direction that they approached Jupiter from. But one moon broke the mold. This rock, which the team calls Valetudo for the Roman goddess of health and hygiene, is tiny, only about a kilometer across. It orbits in the same direction as Jupiter’s spin, but alongside the farther-out retrograde moons. As a result, Valetudo is probably doomed to collide with one or more of the other moons someday. The researchers are still calculating when, but they expect it to occur sometime between 100 million and a billion years from now. Valetudo may be the last remnant of a bigger object that has already withstood several collisions, or of a family of moons that has since been smashed to smithereens. “It’s probably the

largest surviving member, if not the only one,” Sheppard says. Such nonconformist satellites are not rare, notes planetary scientist David Jewitt of UCLA, who was not involved in the new work. “But they are very interest-

ing, because we know that they have been captured by their host planets, but we don’t know how, or from where,” he says. Figuring out what oddballs like Valetudo are made of could help nail those details down. (net)

French drug smuggler home after being held 18 years in Indonesia

A Frenchman detained for 18 years after trying to smuggle drugs into Bali arrived in Geneva on Sunday and was on his way home after being deported in a case that sparked outrage in France over Indonesia’s tough narcotics laws. Police arrested Michael Blanc on the day after Christmas in 1999 at the tropical island’s airport with 3.8 kilogrammes (8.4 pounds) of hashish hidden inside scuba diving canisters. Blanc, now 45, was given a life sentence -- narrowly escaping the death penalty which has been handed to some other foreign drug traffickers, including two members of the notorious Bali Nine who were executed in 2015. His prison term was later cut to 20 years, and in 2014 Blanc won something that few foreigners get in Indonesia -- parole, though he was not allowed to leave the country immediately. The three-year parole period ended in July 2017, and he then had to wait another year while on probation. Among them were foreign nationals, including two Bali Nine members arrested in 2005 for an attempt to smuggle heroin from Indonesia to Australia. The executions of Australian ringleaders Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran sparked diplomatic outrage and a call to abolish Indonesia’s death penalty. Although Jakarta suspended executions last year, Widodo has said the country is facing a “drug emergency” and previously ordered police to shoot traffickers who resist arrest. High-profile cases like that of Australian national Schapelle Corby, who spent more than nine years behind bars for smuggling marijuana into Bali, have stoked concern that Indonesia is becoming a drug destination. Rolled up by waves, a World Bank senior economist dies MANGUPURA —World Bank senior economist, Aakansha Pande, 38, was rolled up by waves and drowned while swimming on the beach in front of Double Six, Seminyak, Kuta, Badung, on Saturday (Jul. 21). The victim was successfully rescued by Badung lifesaver officers, but she breathed her last on the way to Siloam Hospital, Kuta.

As the information compiled on Sunday (Jul. 22), this American woman stayed at the Hotel Indigo, Seminyak, where during the stay in Bali she was with her husband, Ziad Haider. Around 17:00 local time, the victim with her husband and friends of six people arrived at the scene. Initially, the victim had played with

sand, and then swam to the middle of the sea. Suddenly, a great wave rolled up and drowned the victim. The incident was seen by lifesaver team and directly helped the victim. After being evacuated to the beach, the victim was immediately taken to Siloam Hospital. Upon arrival at the hospital, the medical team immediately conducted a check on

the patient’s condition, checked the response as well as patient’s pulse and breath. In addition, it was also resumed with a heart record, but the victim was in a state of death upon arrival at the hospital. Furthermore, the medical team suggested the victim’s body to be taken to Sanglah Hospital for an autopsy. At 22:30, the victim’s body

was taken to Sanglah Hospital by using an ambulance. Chief of the Denpasar Police, Hadi Purnomo, when asked for his confirmation justified the incident. He said the victim’s body was checked at hospital but no longer existed. “Possibly, it has been taken by her family. She was in Bali in a series of holidays,” he said. (kmb36)

With estimated ticket sales of $35.8 million for the three-day weekend, “Equalizer” edged out another new sequel, star-studded “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations. In his new film, Washington again plays a former black-ops agent -- and now soft-spoken Lyft driver -- who is drawn back into action to avenge a friend’s death. Director Antoine Fuqua also made “Training Day,” which earned Washington a best actor Oscar nod. Industry watchers had expected Universal’s “Mamma Mia!” to open atop the box office, but its ticket sales of $34.4 million were “by no means a disappointment” at 22 percent above the original film’s opening, according to Hollywood Reporter. With a star-studded cast -- including Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan -- the film is set after the events of the original “Mamma Mia!” but uses flashbacks to fill in the story of Streep’s carefree character on the sun-splashed Greek island where an ABBA soundtrack is never far away. In third spot was “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” from Sony, which took in $23.2 million. The animated comedy, whose voice cast includes Adam Sandler and Selena Gomez, follows Count Dracula and his family as they get away from their hotel for their own vacation. Slipping from second last week to fourth was “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” the 20th release in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, at $16.1 million. Inmates at an Indonesian prison paid for luxury cells equipped with air conditioning, flatscreen TVs and private washrooms, anti-graft officials said, in the graft-riddled country’s latest corruption scandal. Jail staff allegedly took bribes of 200-500 million rupiah ($14,000-$35,000) from inmates to renovate cells and supply banned mobile phones or even let them temporarily leave prison, Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said. Anti-graft agents arrested five people connected to the scandal at Sukamiskin prison, including inmates and the warden who got cash and a pair of vehicles to look the other way, it added. A raid on Sunday turned up several cells that featured modern bathrooms with hot showers, fullsized refrigerators, coffee makers,

microwave ovens and stereo loudspeakers, the KPK said. “We apologise to the Indonesian people,” Sri Puguh Budi Utami, the director general of Indonesia’s prisons, told reporters late Sunday. “We’re very sorry that we still have not been able to maximise our monitoring systems.” A former tax official now serv-

ing time at Sukamiskin was once photographed watching a tennis tournament in Bali and had even travelled overseas on a fake passport when he was supposed to be in another jail. The prison’s other inmates include a former chief justice and exhouse speaker Setya Novanto, who was convicted in April of taking

millions of dollars in kickbacks and bribes linked to the national roll-out of government ID cards. They were not among the inmates or prison staff arrested Sunday. Indonesian prisons are more commonly known for their poor conditions and outbreaks of violence. But it is an open secret that the rich and powerful can buy luxury on the inside, prompting the government to warn last year that it would jail guards or other staff caught taking bribes from inmates in exchange for special treatment.

In one of the highest-profile cases, a businesswoman imprisoned for bribery had a cell with a spring mattress, couch, refrigerator, television and air conditioning -- and adjoining karaoke room.
