Spielberg debuts action-packed ‘Ready Player One’ footage

SAN DIEGO — When Steven Spielberg first read the book “Ready Player One,” which is about a dystopian future where humans take refuge in a virtual reality world, he had one thought: “They’re going to need a younger director.”

But Spielberg decided to take on the challenge anyway, spending two and a half years bringing author Ernest Cline’s vision to life. The director unveiled a new action- and nostalgiapacked trailer for the film Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con to much excitement.

The 6,500-person Hall H crowd gave the director a standing ovation and cheered heartily when the first images of “the stacks” appeared showing a bleak vision of the housing situation in Columbus, Ohio, in 2045. Tye Sheridan stars as the lead character Wade

For Spielberg, the film was a chance to both go back to his heyday of filmmaking while also gazing into the future. Eagle-eyed viewers spotted references to everything from “Tron” to “The Iron Giant” in the footage.

“It was like the most amazing flashforward and flash-back at the same time,” Spielberg said. For Cline, having Spielberg directing the adaptation of his book was like closing a circle.

Chicago festival to mark Pokemon Go anniversary goes awry

CHICAGO — A major Pokemon Go festival in Chicago to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the virtual game went badly awry when technical glitches prevented many fans from logging on.

The problems forced Niantic Inc., the developer of the wildly popular augmented reality game, to issue a statement saying everyone who registered for the event would get a full refund for the $20 tickets and $100 in credits for use of the app.

Niantic CEO John Hanke was booed when he took the stage at Chicago’s Grant Park to address the thousands of frustrated Pokemon enthusiasts.

much as $400 online for the tickets, which sold out within minutes of their June release. While no official attendance figures were available, organizers had planned for as many as 20,000 Pokemon players and “trainers” at the festival billed by Niantic as the first official anniversary event in the world.

John Haberkorn of Chicago, a member of the Official Pokemon Go 40 Club, an international online community of high-level players, said he started waiting in line for the opening of the festival at 6 a.m.

“The excitement has just been drastically minimized because of what we’ve experienced today,” Haberkorn told the Chicago Tri-

bune.

Late in the day, Niantic’s Chief Marketing Officer Mike Quigley tried to placate irritated players by announcing that everyone who scanned a code when they entered the park would automatically receive the Legendary Pokemon Lugia, a rare and powerful creature difficult to defeat in virtual battle and prized by Pokemon enthusiasts.

Niantic says Pokemon Go has been downloaded 750 million times since it was launched. The augmented reality game that uses GPS to locate, capture, battle and train virtual creatures was introduced in the United States in July 2016.(ap)

Israeli raid, Jerusalem clashes ratchet tensions higher

JERUSALEM - Israel sent extra troops into the occupied West Bank on Saturday and its police broke up a crowd of stone-throwing Palestinians in Jerusalem as international concern mounted over the deadliest outbreak of violence between the two sides for years.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said one Palestinian was killed during a separate clash outside the city, taking the death toll from the past two days to seven. It did not provide details of how he died.

Three Israelis were stabbed to death on Friday while eating dinner in a West Bank settlement. Hours earlier, three Palestinians were killed in violence prompted by Israel’s installation of metal detectors at entry points to the Noble Sanc-

tuary-Temple Mount compound in Jerusalem’s walled Old City.

Exhibit in New York celebrates life of Muppets creator Jim Henson

NEW YORK - A new exhibit featuring the work of Muppets creator Jim Henson will go on permanent display in New York City on Saturday to celebrate the career of the American puppeteer who brought to life such characters as Miss Piggy and Big Bird.

“The Jim Henson Exhibition,” housed in a new gallery space funded by the City of New York at the Museum of the Moving Image, features more than 300 artifacts related to Henson’s career,

including 47 puppets, character sketches, storyboards, scripts, photographs, iconic costumes and more.

Film and television clips and behind-the-scenes footage are presented on more than 27 monitors and projections throughout the gallery. Interactive experiences allow visitors to try their hand at puppeteering on screen and designing a puppet character.

Barbara Miller, curator of the collections and exhibitions at the

museum, says the exhibit explores Henson’s work for film and television and his transformative impact on popular culture. It also includes material from some of the puppeteer’s lesser known film projects.

“Of course there’s familiar favorites like Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog and Big Bird and all the things you would expect to see at an exhibition about Jim Henson and the Muppets,” said Miller.

“But there’s also a picture that emerges of Jim Henson as

an experimental film maker, as someone who was always creatively restless and looking to do the next thing,” she said, adding that museum staff wanted to “permanently tell this story.”

Henson’s characters helmed “The Muppet Show” on TV between 1976 and 1981, before appearing in numerous films including 1992’s “The Muppet Christmas Carol,” and 2011’s “The Muppets.”

SEMARAPURA — Tourism sector in Klungkung district has increasingly developed in recent years. It is not only in mainland, but also in Nusa Penida islands. Its name has been familiar among foreign tourists. However, this sector has not been supported by adequate infrastructure.

Tinkling dollars of tourism not yet create equity

DENPASAR — Inequality stays a classic problem faced by Bali today. Actually, the development of tourism has generated a lot of dollar tinkling. But in fact, it cannot be enjoyed evenly by the entire community of the Island of the Gods.

“With the current tourism development in Bali, Karangasem whose area is two times of the area of Badung only has the regionally generated revenue (PAD) as much as 1/11 of Badung, and then Buleleng which is 3 times wider than Badung only has regional revenue as much as 1/12 of Badung. It is very unfair,” said Deputy Chairman of the Bali House of Representatives, I Nyoman Sugawa Korry, in Denpasar, on Saturday (Jul. 22).

This injustice, continued Sugawa, had an impact on the development results tending to be imbalanced. It also appears from the striking differences in per capita income, human development index and gini ratio. “To reach a balance, then all things must be fair,” explained this Golkar politician.

Sugawa also proposed a revision to the Law No.28/2009 on regional taxes and levies. The key point for the law is to include a source of income in the form of levies from tourism sector. All this time, the hotel and restaurant taxes are handed over to producing districts, especially Badung. In the meantime, cultural tourism in Bali is supported by all districts / municipality.

“In the past, the policy was intended for star-rated hotels built in Sanur, Kuta, and other districts are supporters, so that the hotel and restaurant tax funds only go to Badung. Now, other districts are just like receiving mercy and it is very subjective. Moreover, there is like and dislike or even ‘it may have other motives,’” he explained.

Therefore, continued Sugawa, revision of the Law No. 28 must be done so that hotel and restaurant taxes currently distributed directly

by Badung to the recipient districts are not only a mercy but can be the right of the supporting districts.

Thus, it can make justice. In addition to the Law No. 28, he also proposed to central government the revision against the Law No.33/2004 on fiscal balance between central government and local government because balancing funds received

by Bali so far is not proportional to the foreign exchange contributed by the Island of the Gods through the progress of tourism.

“In the Law No. 33 is set forth that the source of profit-sharing fund is only from natural resources, whereas Bali does not have it so that it is not fair. Actually, there are two sources of revenue sharing from natural resources and other resources. Well, elaboration of the other sources in the Law 33 is not available. We demand it must be changed by proposing tourism to be included in it,” he concluded. (kmb32)

Head of the Klungkung Tourism Office, Nengah Sukasta, explained on Saturday (Jul. 22) the growth of tourism sector is getting better, both in the mainland and the islands. In addition to being able to provide an impact on the economy of local community, the regionally generated revenue (PAD) is also boosted.

Based on the latest data, it comes from four objects, namely Goa Lawah, Levi Rafting, Kertagosa and Nusa Penida. “This year, the regionally generated revenue is targeted to reach IDR 2.8 billion, and until July 21, it has realized IDR 1.6 billion more,” he said.

Pursuant to Regent’s Regulation No.3/2013 on levies of recreation and sporting places, the entrance

fee to Goa Lawah costs IDR 6,000 (child) and IDR 12,000 (adult). Levi Rafting is charged at IDR 2,000 for child and IDR 4,000 for adult; and Kertagosa at IDR 4,000 (child) and IDR 6,000 (adult). In the meantime, entrance fee to Nusa Penida is IDR 4,000 for child and IDR 7,000 for adult. “There is a tendency if the visit increases about ten percent from last year,” he said.

In order to maximize the number of visits, he said the arrangement continues to be made. However, it has not been able to reach all objects simultaneously. This happens due to limited budgets. “Now, the arrangement in Kertagosa costs approximately IDR 1 billion, while Nusa Penida is just allocated for promotion worth IDR 500 million. As scheduled, the arrangement will be worked on next year,” he explained.

This tourism development has not been able to run smoothly as remains to be constrained by supporting infrastructure, especially in Nusa Penida. “Some infrastructures to tourist object are still inadequate. This will become the attention of district government to get handling,” he said. (sos)

Democrats herald agreement on sweeping Russia sanctions bill

Joint team monitor expatriates

Finding out a Korean does export business DENPASAR — The joint team consisting of the Denpasar national unity and political agency (Kesbangpol), immigration office, Indonesian military and police conducted monitoring against expatriates residing at Kesiman Petilan village and Penatih village, East Denpasar, on Tuesday (Jul. 18).

Secretary of Denpasar National Unity and Political Agency, I Gusti Agung Putera Dhyana, accompanied by Division Head of Conflict Handling, I Gusti Ngurah Gde Arisudana, after monitoring said that such activity is carried out to check the presence of expatriates in the city of Denpasar. This time, the joint team targets the Kesiman Petilan village and Penatih village according to the data received from the East Denpasar government a few months ago. He said the monitoring measure against expatriates is meant to curb their documents as a requirement to stay in Bali, especially in Denpasar.

“We and the joint team came down to the field to check documents of expatriates living in the Denpasar area,” he said.

Therefore, this joint team also involves immigration elements that will immediately take action if there is any abuse of residence of permit. In the monitoring, the team found a South Korean citizen who does export business. “In terms of residence permit, it remains valid, but his business permits is still under process,” said Putra Dhyana.

As for the monitoring of expatriates in Penatih village, the team encountered a Germany citizen but did not want to meet the team. He reasoned that he has reported himself regularly to immigration office.

Responding to this matter, Division Head of Conflict Management, Kesbangpol Denpasar, I Gusti Ngurah Gde Arisudana, said that he has coordinated with the local hamlet chief. According to local hamlet chief, the expatriate from Germany has been regularly doing self-report to the hamlet authority.

Furthermore, Arisudana added that the monitoring against expatriates is essentially intended to provide comfort for all parties, including the expatriates themselves.

In the meantime, hamlet chief of Kedaton, Nyoman Kondra, said that currently there are 15 expatriates living permanently in the region. All of them have been reporting themselves in accordance with the applicable provisions.

As for the permit of business run by the South Korean citizen, Kondra claimed to have long submitted the business permit. However, he did not know whether the permit has been issued. “Hopefully, all the provisions applied to foreigners should be obeyed, so that expatriates in the region can live comfortably,” he added. DENPASAR — Ministry of agriculture plans to provide insurance for farmers of chili and onion plants. However, it remains in the research stage as both commodities have a high risk of loss, so that it is still in the experimental stage.

Related to the plan, Jasindo has been invited to discuss the matter with the ministry of agriculture. “But there is no progress because it is still in the discussion stage,” said Nyoman Yuda Palguna, Head of Jasindo of Denpasar Branch.

According to him, chili and onion can be insured with general insurance. However, Jasindo denoting a general insurance company still considers the willingness of reinsurance overseas. “It’s unknown yet whether the insurance companies also accept the risk of onion and chili. If they accept, we can also automatically accept it,” he said. All

Iran announces new missile production line - state media

BEIRUT - Iran announced the launch of a new missile production line on Saturday, according to state media, against a backdrop of tension between the United States and Tehran.

The Sayyad 3 missile can reach an altitude of 27 km (16 miles) and travel up to 120 km (74 miles), Iranian defence minister Hossein Dehghan said at a ceremony. The missile can target fighter planes, unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles and helicopters, Dehghan said.

Last week, the United States slapped new economic sanctions on Iran over its ballistic missile program, and said Tehran’s “malign activities” in the Middle East undercut any “positive contributions” coming from a 2015 Iran nuclear accord.

The measures signalled that the administration of President Donald Trump was seeking to put more pressure on Iran while keeping in place the agreement between Tehran and six world powers to curb its nuclear program in return for lifting international oil and financial sanctions. The U.S. government said it

was targeting 18 entities and people for supporting what it said were “illicit Iranian actors or transnational criminal activity”.

Those sanctioned had backed Iran’s military or the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps by developing drones and military equipment, producing and maintaining boats, and procuring electronic components, it said. Others had “orchestrated the theft of U.S. and Western software programs” sold to Iran’s government, the Treasury Department said. On Monday, the Trump administration said Iran was complying with the nuclear agree-

ment but that it was in default of the spirit of the accord.

It was the second time Trump has certified Iranian compliance with the agreement since he took office in January, despite having described it as “the worst deal ever” during his 2016 presidential campaign, criticising then-President Barack Obama, whose administration negotiated the accord.

Dehghan said at the ceremony on Saturday that the recent $110 billion military deal between the United States and Saudi Arabia, announced during Trump’s visit to Riyadh in May, was intended as a threat to Iran.

“We recently witnessed an immense purchase that some countries in the region paid as a ransom to America and they intend to bring weapons into the region, and this purchase was done with the goal of threatening Islamic Iran,” Dehghan said according to the website for state TV.(rtr)

Egypt court sentences 28 to death over 2015 prosecutor killing

CAIRO - A Cairo criminal court on Saturday sentenced to death 28 people over the 2015 killing of Egypt’s top prosecutor after the death penalty was approved by the country’s top religious authority, and it also jailed 15 others for 25 years each.

Public prosecutor Hisham Barakat was killed in a car bomb attack on his convoy in the capital, an operation for which Egypt blamed the Muslim Brotherhood and Gaza-based Hamas militants. Both groups have denied having a role. The court had in June recommended passing the death penalty to Egypt’s top religious leader, the Grand Mufti, who can approve or reject the recommendation. The mufti’s guidance is required when a court seeks the death penalty but his decision is not binding.. The sentences, confirmed by the court in Saturday’s hearing, can be appealed.

“The verdicts were shocking today,” said one of the defence lawyers, Ahmed Saad. “Others who had nothing to do with the assassination of martyr Hisham Barakat received life sentences. They had nothing to do with the incident.”

Egypt’s Interior Ministry released a video last year showing several young men confessing and admitting going to Gaza for training from Hamas, but some later denied the charges in court.

The defendants said they were forced to confess under torture and their lawyers asked that they be medically examined.

Egypt faces an Islamist insurgency led by Islamic State in North Sinai, where hundreds of soldiers and police have been killed. But the group has increasingly targeted Egypt’s Christians with church bombings and shooting.(rtr)

SEOUL- North Korea’s economy grew at its fastest pace in 17 years in 2016, South Korea’s central bank said on Friday, despite the isolated country facing international sanctions aimed at curbing its defiant pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Gross domestic product (GDP) in North Korea last year rose 3.9 percent from the previous year when the economy contracted due to a drought and low commodity prices, the Bank of Korea said.

The expansion, driven by mining and energy, marked the biggest rise since a 6.1 percent gain in 1999.

North Korea, which counts China as its biggest trading partner, also boosted exports by 4.6 percent, the most since an 11.8 percent jump in 2013.

Still, the isolated state’s per capita gross national income in 2016 was just 1.5 million won ($1,342), less than 5 percent of the comparable number in South Korea.

North Korea does not publish economic data. The Bank of Korea has released GDP data on North Korea every year since 1991 based on information from government agencies including South Korea’s Ministry of Unification and the National Intelligence Service.

The estimate is widely used by international organisations and researchers.

North Korea has been under U.N. sanctions since 2006 over its ballistic missile and nuclear programmes and the Security Council has ratcheted up the measures in response to five nuclear tests and two long-range missile launches.

Grandma Londri has become a crafter making nipa leaf into roof since before giving birth to children.

Young nipa leaf is yellow while the old one is green. Nipa leaves can be taken advantage to make house roof, cane work of house walls, and various handicrafts such as mats, hats and basket bag. In ancient times, nipa leaf was also used as writing media in addition to palm leaves.

Nipa tree has a lot of benefits. Unfortunately, utilization of this plant is still limited. Moreover, this plant must become extinct along with the destruction of mangrove forests and coastal damage caused by human activities.

Nipa leaf is also used by residents at Samblong, Sangkaragung village, Jembrana, to make home roof crafts as well as fence and wall craft. Besides, the leaves are more water resistant than coconut leaves. If the dried plaited leaf is sprayed with diesel oil it will be more durable.

Unfortunately, the nipa leaves are increasingly rare today and difficult to get because many have been cut down. This condition makes it difficult for nipa crafters in the region to obtain raw material, while the demand for roof craft from this leaf is increasing and much sought after by hotel or villa entrepreneurs.

Grandma Ketut Londri, 68, from Samblong hamlet, Sangkaragung, Jembrana, said on Saturday (Jul. 22) that she has become a crafter making nipa leaf into roof since before giving birth to children. So, it has been lasting for decades.

“In the past, I could make dozens of pieces a day. But after getting older, now I can only make 3 or 5 pieces a day because of having been tired quickly and unable to sit down longer,” said Grandma Londri.

Prior to plaiting, Grandma Londri will usually collect nipa leaves first from the swamps, ponds or mangrove forest in the region of Perancak, about 3 km-5 km from her home. “When looking for nipa leaves, our legs must be ready to be submerged in the swamp or water, because it grows in mangrove forest,” said Grandma Londri who was left to die by her husband five years ago.

After getting nipa leaves, she will prepare a bamboo stem along 3 meters and the rope to weave the leaves. She buys bamboo stems as much as 50 pieces having been split at IDR 30,000 and a bundle of bamboo strap at IDR 1,000.

Her woven nipa roof is sold for IDR 5,000IDR 8,000 per piece with the length of 3 meters.

“Commonly, there are collectors from Denpasar coming here, and sometimes there are also hotel entrepreneurs coming here to buy,” she explained.

If there is an order, the grandma’s daughterin-law will employ several people with a wage of IDR 1,000 per piece. “An order must be placed far in advance because it is quite difficult to find out nipa leaves. Moreover, we have to lease a land to plant nipa with a profitsharing system,” said Iluh, the daughter-in-law of Londri.

She hoped the nipa tree could still be maintained and not destroyed because they have many benefits. Moreover, currently this kind of nipa leaf roof is widely sought after because it looks artistic when used as a roof and fence, even though being a traditional product. (kmb)

The United States is mulling new sanctions on Chinese firms and bank doing business with Pyongyang on top of trying to get China and Russia to back a new U.N. Security Council resolution imposing stiffer sanctions on North Korea following its latest missile test. In 2016, China accounted for 92.5 percent of all North Korean trade, according to data from the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) on Friday.

The North’s economy this year will “definitely” be impacted by China’s decision to ban all coal imports, said Kim Suk-jin, a research fellow at the state-run Korea Institute of National Unification (KINU).

“North Korea can bypass some sanctions but coal is critical for their economy and it is something that’s difficult to smuggle. Coal can be spotted easily when it’s being moved,” said Kim. Lim Soo-ho, a research head at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy, said that sanctions didn’t bite hard last year, as China loosened some of its earlier restrictions in the second half after South Korea decided to deploy a U.S. anti-missile defense system.

“With expanding sanctions, there are more downside risks to its growth this year than last,” Lim said. “Pyongyang’s heavy industries and manufacturing sectors could be hit hard if China continues to cut fuel sales to North Korea.”

The Bank of Korea official declined to comment on how the Chinese

coal ban and tightened international sanctions since last year would affect North Korea’s economy in 2017. The United Nations’ food agency said on Thursday North Korea is facing severe food shortages due to the worst drought since 2001.

Kim said it was too early to say whether North Korea’s crops will suffer, as the Korean Peninsula has seen much rain in recent weeks.

FRACTION OF S.KOREA ECONOMY North Korea’s 2016 GDP in real terms stood at 32.0 trillion won ($28.50 billion), according to the Bank of Korea data - a fraction of South Korea’s 1,508.3 trillion won ($1.34 trillion). Mining and manufacturing make up the biggest portion of North Korea’s industry,

accounting last year for 33.2 percent of the sector.

Overall exports from North Korea, excluding trade with South Korea, rose 4.6 percent last year to $2.82 billion thanks to shipments of fishery products, which soared 74.0 percent, the South’s central bank said. North Korea imports rose 4.8 percent to $3.73 billion, led by plant products and textiles.

Although trade between the two Koreas plunged 87.7 percent last year due to a shutdown of a joint industrial zone the North shared with the South just north of the border, the North’s headline trade numbers were barely affected, the data showed. LONDON - Britain’s Prince William and his brother Harry recall memories from their childhood 20 years after the sudden death of their mother, Princess Diana, in a new television documentary to be broadcast this week.

Indonesia strongly denounces ban on prayers at Al Aqsa Mosque

YOGYAKARTA - The Indonesian government has strongly denounced the Israeli ban on prayers at Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, Palestine. “Indonesia once again strongly denounces the restriction on prayers at Al Aqsa Mosque. Likewise, Indonesia strongly denounces the death of three citizens,” President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said on the Ahmad Dahlan University compounds here on Saturday.

The Indonesian government called on the international community to help settle the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian land, he stated. “Indonesia asks the UN, the UN Secretary General (in particular), to allow the UN Security Council to convene a session soon to discuss the Al Aqsa Mosque crisis,” he remarked.

Security situation at the Al Aqsa Mosque compounds has been worsening in the past few days following the shooting of Al Aqsa Mosque Imam Sheikh Ikrima Sabri in East Jerusalem. Israeli security agencies have also restricted access to Al Aqsa Mosque in a blatant breach of Muslims rights to perform prayers.

The Indonesian government has also urged Israel

not to alter the status quo of Al Aqsa compounds so that Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock will remain holy sites to which all Muslims will have access.

Earlier, the Indonesian delegation to the International Conference on the Question of Jerusalem had condemned Israel for restricting access to the Al Aqsa Mosque, calling the measure as a reckless aggression.

The delegation, led by Indonesian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Husnan Bey Fananie, had encouraged the issuance of a Communique that condemned Israel for violating international laws and the status quo of Al Aqsa, the Indonesian Embassy in Baku noted in a press statement on Saturday.

Berawa Beach MANGUPURA - Berawa Beach is one of Canggu’s beaches closest to Seminyak, within only a half-hour drive north from Seminyak’s main dining and shopping hubs, and just a minute hop north of Batubelig. This dark grey and black sand beach features the largest lagoon along the Canggu coastline, which largely forms part of the hotel beachfront of the Lv8 Resort Hotel. To reach the beach, take the namesake Jalan Pantai Berawa, ending right at the Legong Keraton Beach Hotel. Berawa Beach is also one of the last stops in Canggu for avid surfers who prefer to escape the more crowded coasts of the south. There are some rocky reefs that anchor the sand and which help shape up some nice rights and a few lefts at high tide. The waves are too big and currents too strong for swimming, but as a casual visitor you are offered calming scenes around sunset, which is also put to good use by a number of unique bars and chill out spots in the area.

Just across the lagoon is one such venue, La Laguna, which features an ornate wooden bridge over the southern part of the inlet – a great spot to capture the sunset. Over the three weeks, Froome executed fewer of his trademark devastating accelerations in the high mountains. He ran out of gas and temporarily lost the race lead on a super-steep climb in the Pyrenees. He didn’t win any of the 20 stages before Sunday’s Stage 21, which is traditionally a peaceful ride into Paris with only the sprinters dashing for the line at the end, for the bragging right of winning the stage on the Champs-Elysees.

But Froome at 90 or 95 percent of his previous best still proved plenty.

Certainly good enough to be able to start dreaming of win No. 5 — and of joining the exalted company of Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain. They have been the joint leaders since Lance Armstrong’s string of seven doping-assisted victories was expunged from the history of the 114-year-old race.

“It’s a huge honor just to be mentioned in the same sentence as the greats,” Froome said. “I have got a new-found appreciation for

just how difficult it is for those guys to have won five Tour de France. It certainly isn’t getting easier each year.” Yet he made the deciding time trial look easy enough. To boos and whistles from the partisan crowd backing Romain Bardet, the French rider who was only 23 seconds behind him in the overall standings, Froome set off last from the Stade Velodrome football stadium. Bardet had set off two minutes ahead of him.

Froome rode so strongly that by the end, he had Bardet in his sights.

The French rider wilted on the twisting, tricky course with long wind-affected straightaways by the sea and a short sharp uphill to Notre-Dame de la Garde cathedral, the dominant landmark in France’s second-largest city.

The suspense was quickly over.

By the first time check, after just 10 kilometers (six miles) of riding, Froome was already 43 seconds quicker than Bardet. The only question became whether Bardet would even be able to save a place for himself on the podium. He did, by

the narrowest of margins. Just one second was all that separated his third place from Mikel Landa of Spain, Froome’s teammate in fourth.

“It’s just an amazing feeling,” Froome said. “It was so close coming into this TT. This was my closest Tour de France, the most hard-fought between the riders ... I didn’t think it would come down to this TT in Marseille. There was a bit of pressure but, for me, it’s always a good thing having pressure.” Uran was far quicker than Bardet over the 22.5-kilometer (14-mile) stage, despite overshooting a left-hand bend before the stadium finish and ricocheting off barriers. He vaulted over Bardet in the overall standings, into the runner-up spot. And with that, the 104th Tour had its podium.

All that’s left for the 167 survivors — from 198 who started on July 1 — is to cross the line in Paris.

“Today I did not take risks, I took all the bends carefully, you can lose everything on a day like this,” Froome said. Bardet endured his first bad day of the three grueling weeks. He said he woke up feeling

But Froome wasn’t even slightly bothered about that. He’d known from the start in Germany that this Tour would be unusual and likely open, because it had few mountaintop finishes, not huge amounts of time-trial kilometers, and many tricky days over all five of France’s mountain ranges. Unlike at previous Tours won with knock-out blows in the high peaks, this victory had to be pieced together bit-by-bit like a jigsaw puzzle.

“Just chipping away on every stage,” he said. “It was always the tactic to ride a three-week race and basically not to go out there on one day with the aim of trying to blow the race apart and smash it.”(ap)

EAST RUTHERFORD - Two sublime goals from Neymar gave Barcelona a 2-1 win over Juventus in front of an 82,000 crowd at MetLife Stadium in the International Champions Cup on Saturday.

Neymar, who is rumoured to be a transfer target of Paris Saint-Germain, put on a master class alongside Lionel Messi as Barcelona turned the tables on the Italian side who knocked them out of last season’s Champions League quarter-finals.

Neymar opened the scoring in the 15th minute, the Brazilian playing a smart one-two with Paco Alcacer before curling high past goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon into the top right corner.

The Brazilian then doubled Barca’s lead 11 minutes later with a world-class goal. Taking a pass from Messi on the left, Neymar slithered past three lunging Juventus defenders as he weaved his way across the box before wrong-footing Buffon and slamming a right-footed shot into the net.

Neymar and Messi gave way at half-time, while Juventus also made several changes in the second half.

The Serie A champions posed more of an attacking threat after the break and pulled a goal back in the 61st minute when Paulo Dybala’s corner was headed home

by Giorgio Chiellini. Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri was impressed by Neymar.

“He played a fabulous game,” Allegri told reporters.

“Along with Messi, they are tremendous talents and you could see that on the pitch.”

As well as reiterating his desire to see Neymar remain at Barca, Ernesto Valverde said the match was a good indicator of his side’s pre-season progress.

“There were a lot of good things in this game.

Intention to dominate through the whole match, even though we had a tough opponent in front of us,” he added. “These type of things are really useful to us.”

The Americans play a semifinal game Saturday night against Costa Rica in a stadium synonymous with American football — the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, the Cotton Bowl and where the first College Football Playoff championship game was played three seasons ago.

That is only about 180 miles from Dempsey’s hometown of Nacogdoches. “It’s always great to be home and play in front of family and friends, especially for a big game,” Dempsey said Friday. “I have a lot of great memories of playing in Dallas as a kid, and I’m proud to represent Nacogdoches. Being from there made me who I am today.”

Dempsey, one goal from matching Landon Donovan’s American record of 57 national team goals, wasn’t part of soccer’s only Gold Cup games at the $1.2 billion AT&T Stadium. In a 2013 semifinal game there when the Americans were on the way to their fifth Gold Cup championship, they beat Honduras 3-1. Donovan scored twice in that game — his 55th and 56th goals for the national team — and assisted on the other goal. About two months later, Donovan scored his final goal in a World Cup qualifier win over Mexico. Within a week after Costa Rica beat the U.S. team 4-0 in World Cup qualifying last November, Jurgen Klinsmann was out as the U.S. coach and Bruce Arena was rehired to the position he had been fired from a decade earlier.

Costa Rica coach Oscar Ramirez said Friday that Arena has seemingly had a positive impact on the U.S. team. “They look more relaxed in terms of what they’re doing on the field,” Ramirez said through an interpreter. This U.S. roster for the Gold Cup knockout rounds also is much different than the one that played in

Costa Rica eight months ago — not just the change at coach. Only five players from that game that are set for this semifinal game — Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore, Matt Besler, Omar Gonzalez and Graham Zusi.

“That’s in the past,” Gonzalez said. “I don’t think about that game. ... This is just another game. West Ham signs Arnautovic from Stoke for club-record fee

LONDON — West Ham signed attacking midfielder Marko Arnautovic from Stoke for a clubrecord fee on Saturday.

The fee wasn’t disclosed, but British media said West Ham paid an initial 20 million pounds ($26 million) that could rise to 25 million pounds ($32.5 million) for the 28-year-old Austria international.

Arnautovic is West Ham’s third signing of the

summer, after right back Pablo Zabaleta on a free transfer and goalkeeper Joe Hart on loan.

Froome eyes Tour de France greatness after sealing win No. 4

Berawa Beach MANGUPURA - Berawa Beach is one of Canggu’s beaches closest to Seminyak, within only a half-hour drive north from Seminyak’s main dining and shopping hubs, and just a minute hop north of Batubelig. This dark grey and black sand beach features the largest lagoon along the Canggu coastline, which largely forms part of the hotel beachfront of the Lv8 Resort Hotel. To reach the beach, take the namesake Jalan Pantai Berawa, ending right at the Legong Keraton Beach Hotel. Berawa Beach is also one of the last stops in Canggu for avid surfers who prefer to escape the more crowded coasts of the south. There are some rocky reefs that anchor the sand and which help shape up some nice rights and a few lefts at high tide. The waves are too big and currents too strong for swimming, but as a casual visitor you are offered calming scenes around sunset, which is also put to good use by a number of unique bars and chill out spots in the area.

Over the three weeks, Froome executed fewer of his trademark devastating accelerations in the high mountains. He ran out of gas and temporarily lost the race lead on a super-steep climb in the Pyrenees. He didn’t win any of the 20 stages before Sunday’s Stage 21, which is traditionally a peaceful ride into Paris with only the sprinters dashing for the line at the end, for the bragging right of winning the stage on the Champs-Elysees.

But Froome at 90 or 95 percent of his previous best still proved plenty.

Certainly good enough to be able to start dreaming of win No. 5 — and of joining the exalted company of Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain. They have been the joint leaders since Lance Armstrong’s string of seven doping-assisted victories was expunged from the history of the 114-year-old race.

“It’s a huge honor just to be mentioned in the same sentence as the greats,” Froome said. “I have got a new-found appreciation for

By the first time check, after just 10 kilometers (six miles) of riding, Froome was already 43 seconds quicker than Bardet. The only question became whether Bardet would even be able to save a place for himself on the podium. He did, by

the narrowest of margins. Just one second was all that separated his third place from Mikel Landa of Spain, Froome’s teammate in fourth.

“It’s just an amazing feeling,” Froome said. “It was so close coming into this TT. This was my closest Tour de France, the most hard-fought between the riders ... I didn’t think it would come down to this TT in Marseille. There was a bit of pressure but, for me, it’s always a good thing having pressure.” Uran was far quicker than Bardet over the 22.5-kilometer (14-mile) stage, despite overshooting a left-hand bend before the stadium finish and ricocheting off barriers. He vaulted over Bardet in the overall standings, into the runner-up spot. And with that, the 104th Tour had its podium.

All that’s left for the 167 survivors — from 198 who started on July 1 — is to cross the line in Paris.

“Today I did not take risks, I took all the bends carefully, you can lose everything on a day like this,” Froome said. Bardet endured his first bad day of the three grueling weeks. He said he woke up feeling

Indonesia strongly denounces ban on prayers at Al Aqsa Mosque

YOGYAKARTA - The Indonesian government has strongly denounced the Israeli ban on prayers at Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, Palestine. “Indonesia once again strongly denounces the restriction on prayers at Al Aqsa Mosque. Likewise, Indonesia strongly denounces the death of three citizens,” President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said on the Ahmad Dahlan University compounds here on Saturday.

The Indonesian government called on the international community to help settle the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian land, he stated. “Indonesia asks the UN, the UN Secretary General (in particular), to allow the UN Security Council to convene a session soon to discuss the Al Aqsa Mosque crisis,” he remarked.

Security situation at the Al Aqsa Mosque compounds has been worsening in the past few days following the shooting of Al Aqsa Mosque Imam Sheikh Ikrima Sabri in East Jerusalem. Israeli security agencies have also restricted access to Al Aqsa Mosque in a blatant breach of Muslims rights to perform prayers.

The Indonesian government has also urged Israel

not to alter the status quo of Al Aqsa compounds so that Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock will remain holy sites to which all Muslims will have access.

Earlier, the Indonesian delegation to the International Conference on the Question of Jerusalem had condemned Israel for restricting access to the Al Aqsa Mosque, calling the measure as a reckless aggression.

The delegation, led by Indonesian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Husnan Bey Fananie, had encouraged the issuance of a Communique that condemned Israel for violating international laws and the status quo of Al Aqsa, the Indonesian Embassy in Baku noted in a press statement on Saturday.

SEOUL- North Korea’s economy grew at its fastest pace in 17 years in 2016, South Korea’s central bank said on Friday, despite the isolated country facing international sanctions aimed at curbing its defiant pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Gross domestic product (GDP) in North Korea last year rose 3.9 percent from the previous year when the economy contracted due to a drought and low commodity prices, the Bank of Korea said.

The expansion, driven by mining and energy, marked the biggest rise since a 6.1 percent gain in 1999.

North Korea, which counts China as its biggest trading partner, also boosted exports by 4.6 percent, the most since an 11.8 percent jump in 2013.

Still, the isolated state’s per capita gross national income in 2016 was just 1.5 million won ($1,342), less than 5 percent of the comparable number in South Korea.

North Korea does not publish economic data. The Bank of Korea has released GDP data on North Korea every year since 1991 based on information from government agencies including South Korea’s Ministry of Unification and the National Intelligence Service.

The estimate is widely used by international organisations and researchers.

North Korea has been under U.N. sanctions since 2006 over its ballistic missile and nuclear programmes and the Security Council has ratcheted up the measures in response to five nuclear tests and two long-range missile launches.

Grandma Londri has become a crafter making nipa leaf into roof since before giving birth to children.

Young nipa leaf is yellow while the old one is green. Nipa leaves can be taken advantage to make house roof, cane work of house walls, and various handicrafts such as mats, hats and basket bag. In ancient times, nipa leaf was also used as writing media in addition to palm leaves.

Nipa tree has a lot of benefits. Unfortunately, utilization of this plant is still limited. Moreover, this plant must become extinct along with the destruction of mangrove forests and coastal damage caused by human activities.

Nipa leaf is also used by residents at Samblong, Sangkaragung village, Jembrana, to make home roof crafts as well as fence and wall craft. Besides, the leaves are more water resistant than coconut leaves. If the dried plaited leaf is sprayed with diesel oil it will be more durable.

Unfortunately, the nipa leaves are increasingly rare today and difficult to get because many have been cut down. This condition makes it difficult for nipa crafters in the region to obtain raw material, while the demand for roof craft from this leaf is increasing and much sought after by hotel or villa entrepreneurs.

Grandma Ketut Londri, 68, from Samblong hamlet, Sangkaragung, Jembrana, said on Saturday (Jul. 22) that she has become a crafter making nipa leaf into roof since before giving birth to children. So, it has been lasting for decades.

“In the past, I could make dozens of pieces a day. But after getting older, now I can only make 3 or 5 pieces a day because of having been tired quickly and unable to sit down longer,” said Grandma Londri.

Prior to plaiting, Grandma Londri will usually collect nipa leaves first from the swamps, ponds or mangrove forest in the region of Perancak, about 3 km-5 km from her home. “When looking for nipa leaves, our legs must be ready to be submerged in the swamp or water, because it grows in mangrove forest,” said Grandma Londri who was left to die by her husband five years ago.

After getting nipa leaves, she will prepare a bamboo stem along 3 meters and the rope to weave the leaves. She buys bamboo stems as much as 50 pieces having been split at IDR 30,000 and a bundle of bamboo strap at IDR 1,000.

Her woven nipa roof is sold for IDR 5,000IDR 8,000 per piece with the length of 3 meters.

“Commonly, there are collectors from Denpasar coming here, and sometimes there are also hotel entrepreneurs coming here to buy,” she explained.

If there is an order, the grandma’s daughterin-law will employ several people with a wage of IDR 1,000 per piece. “An order must be placed far in advance because it is quite difficult to find out nipa leaves. Moreover, we have to lease a land to plant nipa with a profitsharing system,” said Iluh, the daughter-in-law of Londri.

She hoped the nipa tree could still be maintained and not destroyed because they have many benefits. Moreover, currently this kind of nipa leaf roof is widely sought after because it looks artistic when used as a roof and fence, even though being a traditional product. (kmb)

The United States is mulling new sanctions on Chinese firms and bank doing business with Pyongyang on top of trying to get China and Russia to back a new U.N. Security Council resolution imposing stiffer sanctions on North Korea following its latest missile test. In 2016, China accounted for 92.5 percent of all North Korean trade, according to data from the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) on Friday.

The North’s economy this year will “definitely” be impacted by China’s decision to ban all coal imports, said Kim Suk-jin, a research fellow at the state-run Korea Institute of National Unification (KINU).

“North Korea can bypass some sanctions but coal is critical for their economy and it is something that’s difficult to smuggle. Coal can be spotted easily when it’s being moved,” said Kim. Lim Soo-ho, a research head at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy, said that sanctions didn’t bite hard last year, as China loosened some of its earlier restrictions in the second half after South Korea decided to deploy a U.S. anti-missile defense system.

“With expanding sanctions, there are more downside risks to its growth this year than last,” Lim said. “Pyongyang’s heavy industries and manufacturing sectors could be hit hard if China continues to cut fuel sales to North Korea.”

The Bank of Korea official declined to comment on how the Chinese

coal ban and tightened international sanctions since last year would affect North Korea’s economy in 2017. The United Nations’ food agency said on Thursday North Korea is facing severe food shortages due to the worst drought since 2001.

Kim said it was too early to say whether North Korea’s crops will suffer, as the Korean Peninsula has seen much rain in recent weeks.

FRACTION OF S.KOREA ECONOMY North Korea’s 2016 GDP in real terms stood at 32.0 trillion won ($28.50 billion), according to the Bank of Korea data - a fraction of South Korea’s 1,508.3 trillion won ($1.34 trillion). Mining and manufacturing make up the biggest portion of North Korea’s industry,

accounting last year for 33.2 percent of the sector.

Overall exports from North Korea, excluding trade with South Korea, rose 4.6 percent last year to $2.82 billion thanks to shipments of fishery products, which soared 74.0 percent, the South’s central bank said. North Korea imports rose 4.8 percent to $3.73 billion, led by plant products and textiles.

Although trade between the two Koreas plunged 87.7 percent last year due to a shutdown of a joint industrial zone the North shared with the South just north of the border, the North’s headline trade numbers were barely affected, the data showed. Furthermore, he added that the number of domestic and foreign tourist arrivals each year averagely shows an increase. Based on the data obtained in 2007, the tourist visit to Bangli amounted to 352,777 people; in 2008 (437,207 people), in 2009 (526,706 people), in 2010 (418,143 people), in 2011 (566,617 people), in 2012 (548,152 people), in 2013 (616,637 people), in 2014 (647,607 (people), in 2015 (610,349 people), and in 2016 (695,123 people). “This year as of June there are 46,322 visitors coming to Bangli. This time, the joint team targets the Kesiman Petilan village and Penatih village according to the data received from the East Denpasar government a few months ago. He said the monitoring measure against expatriates is meant to curb their documents as a requirement to stay in Bali, especially in Denpasar.

“We and the joint team came down to the field to check documents of expatriates living in the Denpasar area,” he said.

Therefore, this joint team also involves immigration elements that will immediately take action if there is any abuse of residence of permit. In the monitoring, the team found a South Korean citizen who does export business. “In terms of residence permit, it remains valid, but his business permits is still under process,” said Putra Dhyana.

As for the monitoring of expatriates in Penatih village, the team encountered a Germany citizen but did not want to meet the team. He reasoned that he has reported himself regularly to immigration office.

Responding to this matter, Division Head of Conflict Management, Kesbangpol Denpasar, I Gusti Ngurah Gde Arisudana, said that he has coordinated with the local hamlet chief. According to local hamlet chief, the expatriate from Germany has been regularly doing self-report to the hamlet authority.

Furthermore, Arisudana added that the monitoring against expatriates is essentially intended to provide comfort for all parties, including the expatriates themselves.

In the meantime, hamlet chief of Kedaton, Nyoman Kondra, said that currently there are 15 expatriates living permanently in the region. All of them have been reporting themselves in accordance with the applicable provisions.

As for the permit of business run by the South Korean citizen, Kondra claimed to have long submitted the business permit. However, he did not know whether the permit has been issued. “Hopefully, all the provisions applied to foreigners should be obeyed, so that expatriates in the region can live comfortably,” he added. Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland, the No. 2 House Democrat, said lawmakers had settled lingering issues with the bill, which also includes stiff economic penalties against Iran and North Korea. The sanctions targeting Russia, however, have drawn the most attention due to President Donald Trump’s persistent push for warmer relations with President Vladimir Putin and ongoing investigations into Russia’s interference in the 2016 campaign.

DENPASAR — Ministry of agriculture plans to provide insurance for farmers of chili and onion plants. However, it remains in the research stage as both commodities have a high risk of loss, so that it is still in the experimental stage.

Related to the plan, Jasindo has been invited to discuss the matter with the ministry of agriculture. “But there is no progress because it is still in the discussion stage,” said Nyoman Yuda Palguna, Head of Jasindo of Denpasar Branch.

According to him, chili and onion can be insured with general insurance. Iran announces new missile production line - state media

BEIRUT - Iran announced the launch of a new missile production line on Saturday, according to state media, against a backdrop of tension between the United States and Tehran.

The Sayyad 3 missile can reach an altitude of 27 km (16 miles) and travel up to 120 km (74 miles), Iranian defence minister Hossein Dehghan said at a ceremony. The missile can target fighter planes, unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles and helicopters, Dehghan said.

Last week, the United States slapped new economic sanctions on Iran over its ballistic missile program, and said Tehran’s “malign activities” in the Middle East undercut any “positive contributions” coming from a 2015 Iran nuclear accord.

The measures signalled that the administration of President Donald Trump was seeking to put more pressure on Iran while keeping in place the agreement between Tehran and six world powers to curb its nuclear program in return for lifting international oil and financial sanctions. The U.S. government said it

was targeting 18 entities and people for supporting what it said were “illicit Iranian actors or transnational criminal activity”.

Those sanctioned had backed Iran’s military or the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps by developing drones and military equipment, producing and maintaining boats, and procuring electronic components, it said. Others had “orchestrated the theft of U.S. and Western software programs” sold to Iran’s government, the Treasury Department said. On Monday, the Trump administration said Iran was complying with the nuclear agree-

ment but that it was in default of the spirit of the accord.

It was the second time Trump has certified Iranian compliance with the agreement since he took office in January, despite having described it as “the worst deal ever” during his 2016 presidential campaign, criticising then-President Barack Obama, whose administration negotiated the accord.

Dehghan said at the ceremony on Saturday that the recent $110 billion military deal between the United States and Saudi Arabia, announced during Trump’s visit to Riyadh in May, was intended as a threat to Iran.

Egypt court sentences 28 to death over 2015 prosecutor killing

CAIRO - A Cairo criminal court on Saturday sentenced to death 28 people over the 2015 killing of Egypt’s top prosecutor after the death penalty was approved by the country’s top religious authority, and it also jailed 15 others for 25 years each.

Public prosecutor Hisham Barakat was killed in a car bomb attack on his convoy in the capital, an operation for which Egypt blamed the Muslim Brotherhood and Gaza-based Hamas militants. Both groups have denied having a role. The court had in June recommended passing the death penalty to Egypt’s top religious leader, the Grand Mufti, who can approve or reject the recommendation. The mufti’s guidance is required when a court seeks the death penalty but his decision is not binding.. The sentences, confirmed by the court in Saturday’s hearing, can be appealed.

“The verdicts were shocking today,” said one of the defence lawyers, Ahmed Saad. “Others who had nothing to do with the assassination of martyr Hisham Barakat received life sentences. They had nothing to do with the incident.”

Egypt’s Interior Ministry released a video last year showing several young men confessing and admitting going to Gaza for training from Hamas, but some later denied the charges in court.

The defendants said they were forced to confess under torture and their lawyers asked that they be medically examined.

Exhibit in New York celebrates life of Muppets creator Jim Henson

NEW YORK - A new exhibit featuring the work of Muppets creator Jim Henson will go on permanent display in New York City on Saturday to celebrate the career of the American puppeteer who brought to life such characters as Miss Piggy and Big Bird.

“The Jim Henson Exhibition,” housed in a new gallery space funded by the City of New York at the Museum of the Moving Image, features more than 300 artifacts related to Henson’s career,

including 47 puppets, character sketches, storyboards, scripts, photographs, iconic costumes and more.

Film and television clips and behind-the-scenes footage are presented on more than 27 monitors and projections throughout the gallery. Interactive experiences allow visitors to try their hand at puppeteering on screen and designing a puppet character.

Barbara Miller, curator of the collections and exhibitions at the

museum, says the exhibit explores Henson’s work for film and television and his transformative impact on popular culture. It also includes material from some of the puppeteer’s lesser known film projects.

“Of course there’s familiar favorites like Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog and Big Bird and all the things you would expect to see at an exhibition about Jim Henson and the Muppets,” said Miller.

“But there’s also a picture that emerges of Jim Henson as

an experimental film maker, as someone who was always creatively restless and looking to do the next thing,” she said, adding that museum staff wanted to “permanently tell this story.”

Henson’s characters helmed “The Muppet Show” on TV between 1976 and 1981, before appearing in numerous films including 1992’s “The Muppet Christmas Carol,” and 2011’s “The Muppets.”

Tinkling dollars of tourism not yet create equity

DENPASAR — Inequality stays a classic problem faced by Bali today. Actually, the development of tourism has generated a lot of dollar tinkling. But in fact, it cannot be enjoyed evenly by the entire community of the Island of the Gods.

“With the current tourism development in Bali, Karangasem whose area is two times of the area of Badung only has the regionally generated revenue (PAD) as much as 1/11 of Badung, and then Buleleng which is 3 times wider than Badung only has regional revenue as much as 1/12 of Badung. It is very unfair,” said Deputy Chairman of the Bali House of Representatives, I Nyoman Sugawa Korry, in Denpasar, on Saturday (Jul. 22).

This injustice, continued Sugawa, had an impact on the development results tending to be imbalanced. It also appears from the striking differences in per capita income, human development index and gini ratio. “To reach a balance, then all things must be fair,” explained this Golkar politician.

Sugawa also proposed a revision to the Law No.28/2009 on regional taxes and levies. The key point for the law is to include a source of income in the form of levies from tourism sector. All this time, the hotel and restaurant taxes are handed over to producing districts, especially Badung. In the meantime, cultural tourism in Bali is supported by all districts / municipality.

“In the past, the policy was intended for star-rated hotels built in Sanur, Kuta, and other districts are supporters, so that the hotel and restaurant tax funds only go to Badung. Now, other districts are just like receiving mercy and it is very subjective. Moreover, there is like and dislike or even ‘it may have other motives,’” he explained.

Therefore, continued Sugawa, revision of the Law No. 28 must be done so that hotel and restaurant taxes currently distributed directly

“In the Law No. 33 is set forth that the source of profit-sharing fund is only from natural resources, whereas Bali does not have it so that it is not fair. Actually, there are two sources of revenue sharing from natural resources and other resources. Well, elaboration of the other sources in the Law 33 is not available. Head of the Klungkung Tourism Office, Nengah Sukasta, explained on Saturday (Jul. 22) the growth of tourism sector is getting better, both in the mainland and the islands. In addition to being able to provide an impact on the economy of local community, the regionally generated revenue (PAD) is also boosted.

Based on the latest data, it comes from four objects, namely Goa Lawah, Levi Rafting, Kertagosa and Nusa Penida. “This year, the regionally generated revenue is targeted to reach IDR 2.8 billion, and until July 21, it has realized IDR 1.6 billion more,” he said.

Pursuant to Regent’s Regulation No.3/2013 on levies of recreation and sporting places, the entrance

fee to Goa Lawah costs IDR 6,000 (child) and IDR 12,000 (adult). Levi Rafting is charged at IDR 2,000 for child and IDR 4,000 for adult; and Kertagosa at IDR 4,000 (child) and IDR 6,000 (adult). In the meantime, entrance fee to Nusa Penida is IDR 4,000 for child and IDR 7,000 for adult. “There is a tendency if the visit increases about ten percent from last year,” he said.

In order to maximize the number of visits, he said the arrangement continues to be made. However, it has not been able to reach all objects simultaneously. This happens due to limited budgets. “Now, the arrangement in Kertagosa costs approximately IDR 1 billion, while Nusa Penida is just allocated for promotion worth IDR 500 million. As scheduled, the arrangement will be worked on next year,” he explained.

This tourism development has not been able to run smoothly as remains to be constrained by supporting infrastructure, especially in Nusa Penida. “Some infrastructures to tourist object are still inadequate. This will become the attention of district government to get handling,” he said. (sos)

Spielberg debuts action-packed ‘Ready Player One’ footage

SAN DIEGO — When Steven Spielberg first read the book “Ready Player One,” which is about a dystopian future where humans take refuge in a virtual reality world, he had one thought: “They’re going to need a younger director.”

But Spielberg decided to take on the challenge anyway, spending two and a half years bringing author Ernest Cline’s vision to life. The director unveiled a new action- and nostalgiapacked trailer for the film Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con to much excitement.

The 6,500-person Hall H crowd gave the director a standing ovation and cheered heartily when the first images of “the stacks” appeared showing a bleak vision of the housing situation in Columbus, Ohio, in 2045. Tye Sheridan stars as the lead character Wade

CHICAGO — A major Pokemon Go festival in Chicago to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the virtual game went badly awry when technical glitches prevented many fans from logging on.

The problems forced Niantic Inc., the developer of the wildly popular augmented reality game, to issue a statement saying everyone who registered for the event would get a full refund for the $20 tickets and $100 in credits for use of the app.

Niantic CEO John Hanke was booed when he took the stage at Chicago’s Grant Park to address the thousands of frustrated Pokemon enthusiasts.

Some in attendance had paid as

much as $400 online for the tickets, which sold out within minutes of their June release. While no official attendance figures were available, organizers had planned for as many as 20,000 Pokemon players and “trainers” at the festival billed by Niantic as the first official anniversary event in the world.

John Haberkorn of Chicago, a member of the Official Pokemon Go 40 Club, an international online community of high-level players, said he started waiting in line for the opening of the festival at 6 a.m.

“The excitement has just been drastically minimized because of what we’ve experienced today,” Haberkorn told the Chicago Tri-

bune.

Late in the day, Niantic’s Chief Marketing Officer Mike Quigley tried to placate irritated players by announcing that everyone who scanned a code when they entered the park would automatically receive the Legendary Pokemon Lugia, a rare and powerful creature difficult to defeat in virtual battle and prized by Pokemon enthusiasts.

Niantic says Pokemon Go has been downloaded 750 million times since it was launched. The augmented reality game that uses GPS to locate, capture, battle and train virtual creatures was introduced in the United States in July 2016.(ap)

Israeli raid, Jerusalem clashes ratchet tensions higher

JERUSALEM - Israel sent extra troops into the occupied West Bank on Saturday and its police broke up a crowd of stone-throwing Palestinians in Jerusalem as international concern mounted over the deadliest outbreak of violence between the two sides for years.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said one Palestinian was killed during a separate clash outside the city, taking the death toll from the past two days to seven. It did not provide details of how he died.

Three Israelis were stabbed to death on Friday while eating dinner in a West Bank settlement. Hours earlier, three Palestinians were killed in violence prompted by Israel’s installation of metal detectors at entry points to the Noble Sanc-

tuary-Temple Mount compound in Jerusalem’s walled Old City.

Russia, the United States, the European Union and the United Nations - the so-called Quartet of Middle East peace mediators said in a joint statement they were “deeply concerned by the escalating tensions and violent clashes taking place in and around the Old City of Jerusalem”, and called for restraint on all sides.

Diplomats said the U.N. Secu-

rity Council would meet to discuss the situation on Monday. Sweden, Egypt and France requested the meeting to “urgently discuss how calls for de-escalation in Jerusalem can be supported”, Sweden’s Security Council coordinator, Carl Skau, posted on Twitter.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas ordered the suspension of all official contact with Israel until it removed the metal detectors at the holy compound in Jerusalem,

where Muslims pray at Al-Aqsa mosque. He gave no details, but current contacts are largely limited to security cooperation.

Israel’s security cabinet was due to convene on Sunday and is expected to discuss alternative security measures that could be used to replace the metal detectors, according to two Israeli officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

WEST BANK RAID In Jerusalem, Israeli police said they used riot gear to disperse dozens of Palestinians who threw stones and bottles at them. Television footage

showed police throwing stun grenades and using a water cannon to break up the crowd. In the West Bank, Israeli forces raided the home of the Palestinian attacker who fatally stabbed the three Israelis and wounded another on Friday, the military said.
