Start Me Up: the Stones set to launch tour after Jagger surgery CHICAGO - The Rolling Stones were gearing up for the Chicago launch of their postponed North American tour on Friday, just months after legendary frontman Mick Jagger underwent heart surgery. The ever-slim Jagger, sporting a black hoodie and baseball cap over his lush mane, posted a clip of himself strumming a guitar during rehearsals in the Midwestern city. “Good morning Chicago! We can’t wait to see you at Soldier Field later today,” the iconic British band posted on social media. Fan fears flared in April when the Stones, which formed in 1962, announced the postponement of a string of tour dates so the flamboyant Jagger, 75, could receive medical treatment. Shortly thereafter, doctors performed a minimally invasive transcatheter aortic valve replacement, allowing the artist to avoid a major operation that would require sur-

geons to open his chest. “Thank you everyone for all your messages of support, I’m feeling much better now and on the mend - and also a huge thank you to all the hospital staff for doing a superb job,” Jagger tweeted at the time. The energetic artist known for his hard-partying youth has eight children, five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter, but has maintained a busy schedule of animated stage performances for decades. The Stones’ current tour, first scheduled for April to June, will see the rockers play 17 concerts in 15 arenas across North America, culminating in Miami on August 31. The group will play Chicago’s Soldier Field again on June 25 before heading to Ontario, Canada for a June 29 show north of Toronto. Friday’s concert will open with the American eight-piece soul group St. Paul & The Broken Bones. (afp)

Initially facing only misdemeanor charges over the 2018 incident, the Bronx rapper in April had rejected a plea deal from the Queens district attorney’s office. That offer would have given the 26-year-old Grammy winner conditional discharge if she pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor. The new charges include two felony counts of attempted assault with intent to cause serious physical injury, according to the case docket. The felony classification would not spell jail time, according to New York state law, but could result in probation that could impact Cardi B’s heavy touring schedule. Her lawyer did not immediately

respond to an AFP request for comment. The rapper’s arraignment is scheduled for June 25. On August 29, 2018, Cardi B was in the Angels Strip Club in Queens when her group reportedly lobbed bottles, chairs and a hookah smoking device, which police said bruised a female employee in the legs. That October, police charged the artist with assault and reckless endangerment over the incident. She allegedly ordered an attack on two sisters working at the club because one of them slept with her husband, the rapper Offset. fame sparked during her days as a stripper, when she carved out a social media personality on platforms including Instagram. She is no stranger to controversy -- she was involved in a fracas with fellow rapper Nicki Minaj at New York Fashion Week in September, later taking to Instagram to say that the older Minaj had questioned her parenting skills. Cardi B has not yet publicly spoken of her heightened legal battle, having become the first female rapper to be named Songwriter of the Year during the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Rhythm & Soul Music Awards in California on Thursday night. Indonesian leader urges ASEAN youths to create innovations

BANGKOK - Indonesian President Joko Widodo has called on youths across the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to work hard, create innovations, and think outside the box to enable them to respond to challenges amid global uncertainties. President Widodo echoed his message when speaking at the ASEAN leaders’ interface with youths on the sidelines of the 34th ASEAN Summit on Saturday, Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi said here on Sunday. The youngters in the ASEAN region need to think outside the box because they have been facing a world with full of uncertainties. Despite this challenging situation, they should not surrender, he was quoted by Marsudi as saying at the

session. The Indonesian leader also encouraged them to become the agents of peace and tolerance, Retno LP Marsudi said. Regarding this 34th summit, marine debris was noted as one of the crucial issues that the ASEAN leaders agreed to respond by adopting the Bangkok Declaration on Combating Marine Debris in ASEAN region on June 22. Greenpeace has even launched a petition entitled “No Space for

Waste” by urging the ASEAN leaders to “end plastic waste crisis”. As revealed in its official website, this global environment watchdog called on the whole ASEAN member states to “declare an immediate ban on all imports of plastic waste and e-waste, even those meant for “recycling,” and ensure all ASEAN countries ratify the Basel Ban Amendment “. Meanwhile, in the Bangkok Declaration, the ASEAN leaders have pledged to strengthen ac-

tions at the national level as well as through collaborative actions among the ASEAN’s 10 member states and partners. The strengthened actions are aimed at preventing and significantly reducing marine debris, particularly from land-based activities, including environmentally sound management. The ASEAN leaders are also committed to encouraging an integrated land-to-sea approach to prevent and reduce marine debris, and strengthening national laws and regulations as well as enhancing regional and international cooperation including on relevant policy

dialogue and information sharing. Founded in Bangkok, Thailand, on August 8, 1967, this regional grouping now has 10 member states.
