LOS ANGELES - “The Angry Birds Movie” has flown to victory at the U.S. box office with a $39 million opening weekend at 3,932 locations, handily topping “Captain America: Civil War” and “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.”

The launch for Sony’s animated avian tale performed in line with forecasts as did the third weekend of Disney-Marvel’s “Captain America” with $33.1 million at 4,266 sites for a 54% decline. Universal’s “Neighbors 2” finished in third with a solid $21.8 million at 3,384 screens -- although the sequel was off 55% from the 2014 launch of the original “Neighbors.”

Warner Bros.’ opening of action-comedy “The Nice Guys” reeled in a moderate $11.3 million at 2,865 screens, or about half the “Neighbors 2” number as both battled for the attention of comedy fans.

“Angry Birds,” based on Rovio’s popular video game app, generated an A+ CinemaScore among the core under 25 audience. Josh Greenstein, Sony’s president of worldwide marketing and distribution, pointed to a strong international performance with a $94 million weekend worldwide with 47 first-place finishes.

“Rovio and Sony Imageworks were able to translate video game characters into a globally branded film, which was a major challenge,” he added.

The massive marketing campaign featured tie-ins with more than 100 partners. Greenstein noted that “Angry Birds” should be able to hold well in coming weeks, with no other major competition in the family market until Disney opens “Finding Dory” on June 17.

The film, directed by Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis, is set on an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds - except for Red (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), speedy Chuck (Josh Gad) and Bomb (Danny McBride).

Its worldwide total has hit $150 million with a launch last weekend in most foreign markets.

18 girls killed in fire at school dorm in northern Thailand

BANGKOK — A nighttime fire at a dormitory of a primary school in northern Thailand killed 18 girls, many of whom had been roused by a dorm-mate but went back to sleep, thinking it was a prank, officials and the girl who sounded the alarm said Monday. The victims were between 5 and 12 years old.

Five girls were injured in the Sunday night fire. Many survived by rappelling down from a secondfloor window using sheets tied together to form a rope.

The two-story wooden structure that caught fire housed 38 girls, most of them belonging to the area’s ethnic minorities. Fifteen girls es-

caped without injuries. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Some of the students were still not asleep when the fire broke out and were able to raise the alarm, said Rewat Wassana, manager of the Pithakkaiat Witthaya School, to which the dorm is attached.

The kindergarten and primary school in Wiang Pa Pao district, just outside the city of Chiang Rai, has about 400 day students and boarders. It is about 800 kilometers (500 miles) north of Bangkok.

Rewat said the fire broke out in the dorm’s lower level, which is used for activities. The upper level housed the sleeping quarters. It is one of the two dorms on the 20-acre (8-hectare) school grounds. The other dorm, which is located nearby and is for boys, was untouched, Rewat said.

“We have a teacher who sleeps with the girls in the dorm. She tried to help the students escape,” Rewat told reporters at a news conference broadcast on local television.

BUYING a smartphone for children has negative impacts on their development.

In the future, this condition can have a bad impact because they loss of concern for the environment no matter what happens. To address this problem, the most important thing is the policy of parents. “For example, since childhood give children toys in accordance with their designation. Attempt to make more frequent communication with children, and avoid them from being too busy with their gadget. Allow

them to get in touch with friends and do not be prohibited from playing outside the house, but still monitor them,” said Prof. Rai. This Chief of the Center for Rural Studies, Udayana University, hoped not to let family with their own preoccupation. For example, parents being preoccupied with their gadget will be replicated by their children.

While at school, teachers should also give education on this issue.

“The increasingly advanced development of technology with attractive features has made people more addicted to gadgets. Chief of the Karangasem Health Agency, IGM Tirtayana, said two days ago in Karangasem that aside from planning the mosquito nests eradication (PSN), it will continuously anticipate the attack of dengue fever through fogging against adult mosquitoes.

Fogging has been carried out at hundreds of points. On entering this May, he continued, there is tendency if the patient has decreased. He stated that this year’s dengue fever outbreak belongs to the five-year cycle. He added, in this cycle, many people fall ill where the peak of dengue fever lasted from February through April.

“When entering May, it has started to decline. I’ve checked at the Karangasem Hospital, a number of public health centers and private hospitals like the BaliMed. The number of dengue patients under treatment has decreased. Some treatment rooms are even empty,” he said.

It happens because there are dirty places like chicken coops and pig cages, while dirty water in the gutter stagnates. Many gutters are clogged and never drained or dredged. In the meantime, the Krekuk River has no swift streams this year. Puddles can be found at a number of locations, while the river is taken advantage to dispose of the cage waste.

Local rivers have no water because of the short rainfall. Although having been in rainy season, it rains only for a few times and does not take place so heavily. After heavy rains, flash floods occur in the river. However, when it does not rain, condition of the river will dry out. (013)

Bone cement company accused of experimenting on humans

SEATTLE — Reba Golden hurt her back after falling two floors while building an addition to her house in Honduras. But when she returned to Seattle for a routine spinal surgery, she suffered blood clots, severe bleeding and died in 2007 on the operating table.

Joan Bryant’s back had bothered her since a 1990 car accident, so in 2009 she sought help from a Seattle spinal surgeon, but she bled out on the operating table and could not be revived.

Like at least three spinal-surgery patients before them, Golden and Bryant died after their doctor injected bone cement into their spine and some of the material leaked into their blood stream, causing clotting.

The patients were never told Norian bone cement wasn’t approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Instead, Norian and parent company Synthes used surgeons in

what one doctor called “human experimentation.” Federal prosecutors say the aim was to skirt a long, costly regulatory process.

The Golden and Bryant families have filed lawsuits against Dr. Jens Chapman, the companies, the University of Washington, Harborview Medical Center and Washington state. The lawsuits say Chapman knew the cement caused lethal clotting, and that the university and hospital knew or should have known the product had been prohibited for such use. The first trial is scheduled for June in Seattle.

daughter Cynthia Wilson, also accuses Chapman, Synthes President Hansjorg Wyss and the university of running a criminal enterprise under Washington’s Criminal Profiteering Act. Synthes and Norian, along with four top executives, were indicted in 2009 on charges of conducting unauthorized clinical trials despite warnings that the bone cement caused deadly blood clots. Norian agreed to pay a $22.5 million penalty, Synthes paid a $669,800 fine, and the executives went to prison.

Tina Mankowski, a spokeswoman for Chapman, the university and the medical center, said they “vigorously deny any wrongdoing.” Jodie Wertheim, a spokeswoman for Synthes said the company can’t comment on pending litigation. (ap)

Solar plane lands in Dayton, Ohio on latest leg of roundthe-world flight

OHIO - An experimental airplane powered solely by energy from the sun landed in Ohio on Saturday night on the latest leg of its historic bid by pilots and developers to fly around the globe without a drop of fuel.

The single-seat Solar Impulse 2 aircraft arrived in Dayton shortly before 10 p.m. local time, some 17 hours after leaving Phoenix Goodyear Airport, the project team said on its official Twitter page.

“People told the WrightBrothers & us what we wanted to achieve was impossible,” said Bertrand Piccard after landing.

“They were wrong!”

The locale was of special significance to the pilots, as the home base to aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright.

Amanda Wright Lane, a descendant of the brothers, neither of whom ever married, was on hand to welcome the flight.

With a wingspan exceeding that of a Boeing 747 but an ultra-light carbon-fiber skin and overall weight of a car, the Solar Impulse cruises at speeds ranging from only 34 to 62 miles per hour (55 to 100 kph).

The four engines of the propeller-driven aircraft are powered exclusively by energy collected from more than 17,000 solar cells built into its wings. Excess energy is stored in four batteries

during daylight hours to keep the plane flying after dark.

The plane can climb to 28,000 feet (8,500 meters), but generally flies at lower altitudes at night to conserve energy.

Piccard and Andre Borschberg have been taking turns piloting the plane on each leg of the journey. Both have trained to stay alert for long stretches of time by practicing meditation and hypnosis.

Borschberg set a new endurance record for the longest nonstop solo flight last July during a 118-hour trans-Pacific crossing, over five days and five nights, from Japan to Hawaii. He also set new duration and distance records for solar-powered flight.

Battery damage sustained during the crossing kept the aircraft grounded for nine months.

The Swiss team’s ultimate goal is to achieve the first roundthe-world solar-powered flight, part of its campaign to bolster support for clean-energy technologies.

The team hopes eventually to complete its circumnavigation in Abu Dhabi, the starting point for the journey in March 2015.

Flying fox allows visitors to enjoy the sea from 30 meters up. The flying fox attraction located in at eh CEningan Resort in Ceningan Kawan hamlet, Lembongan, Nusa Penida, can receive 30 visitors a day.

Made Krama Bayu, coordinator of the flying fox tourist attraction, revealed that although Cningan Islands’s flying fox line was only opened eight months ago, it has already become well known amongst tourists who love marine activities as it is the only one in Bali that runs over the sea. Undoubtedly this attraction will get the andrenaline pumping, despite the calm and

beautiful scenery. Foreign travelers are charged IDR 100,000 per ticket while domestic travelers are charged IDR 50,000 per ride.

“Not all travelers dare to come and try it out”, he said adding that in fact it is mostly domestic travellers who are brave enough to try it out.

For those who do not know, flying fox utilizes two steel straps that run along 100 meters.

In addition to the steel straps, participants are also tied to the straps with a safety belt to ensure their security Staff always check to make sure that everything is secure, and participants are always given instructions before sliding down the cable for 100 meters.

Made Krama, explained that the every week two staff members grease the lines so that the cables do not rust and so that the ride down is smooth -especially because sea water is apt to affect the cables.

All the equipment and lines for this flying fox were imported from Thailand by an Australian man known as Mr. Mark who has invested IDR 80 million in this tourist attraction. Many people from Ceningan hamlet have been employed to run the flying fox attraction with at least 6 people from Nusa Penida on duty every day. (dwa)

SINGARAJA - The growing movement against the reclamation of Benao Bay that is disguised as revitalization has now expanded into North Bali. Two customary village youth clubs (STT), Eka Dharma Bhakti customary youth club of Kalibukbuk and Susila Dharma customary youth club of Kaliasem village, have coalesced into The Buleleng Forum of Opposition to the Reclamation of Benoa Bay that has put up large billboards in the area of Lovina, Singaraja indicating the unstoppable force of the people’s movement.

The billboards were installed in a spirit of togetherness at the five-way intersection in Lovina on Saturday (May 21).

Coodinator of North Bali’s ForBali chapter, July Wirahmini, explained that the Bali’s solidarity in opposing the reclamation was expressed in the installation of the billboards that coincided with the 18th anniversary celebrations of the reform movement. The billboards

were put up by the young people of Buleleng as a way to show their concern about the preservation of the natural environment of Benoa Bay. “We are showing our concern about and understanding that the reclamation project plans to backfill a sacred area, a area which according to the bhisama (stipulation) of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) would change the function of Beona Bay”, he confirmed on

Sunday (May 22).

Support for the opposition of the reclamation plan has sprung up in all different parts of Bali, so there should be no reason to suspend the revocation of Presidential Regulation No.51/2014. The installation of billboards indicates that the young people of Bali are firm in their stance that Benoa Bay belongs to the Balinese people – not to the investors.

Creativity of processing plastic waste into pellets penetrates China

UK’s Cameron warns leaving EU is “the self-destruct option” as vote approaches

SINGARAJA - Creative endeavor to process plastic bottle waste is carried out by Putu Eka Darmawan, 27, a young villager from Penglatan, Buleleng. At the same time, he can create job opportunity and generate high profit. Plastic bottles commonly disposed by people are taken advantage by using plastic crushing machine to be exported to China.

Eka told that he was assisted by two youths as skilled labor to sort out quality plastic bottles and crush them into fine granules. The cleaning process is begun by putting hundreds of bottles into two pools.

The bottles are washed before being put into crushing machine and previously dried in the sun. “I process these plastic bottles in the plastic warehouse. It is specially used to accommodate recycled plastic bottles after being processed into fine grains,” he said, Sunday (May 22).

Results of the crushed plastic waste are sent to Surabaya. From Surabaya, it will be further sorted by collector and then exported to China as raw material for making yarn. The creativity of Eka creates an independent entrepreneur. So far, he can send 10 tons of crushed plastic of various types every month to Surabaya. The price of crushed plastic is sold for IDR 3,500 per kg.

The opportunities created by Eka are not easy to do at the beginning.

Experience after experience since working on cruise ships was used as motivation and inspiration to work. He prepared venture capital as much as IDR 400 million to begin the plastic waste processing.

He told that the profit is not large but is able to give a positive benefit to society of Buleleng.

“I do not get many profits. But at least in the long term, this noble ideal will not only give profit to himself but also something valuable and useful to society at large,” he said.

Currently, Eka still utilizes the warehouse newly established two months ago. He still needs more supplies of plastic waste in the future. He decided to process waste after being inspired by meeting with environmental organization.

After that, he had an idea why most young people are reluctant to process plastic waste. He finally succeeded to get profits from the crushed plastic waste.

“He collects plastic waste from nine waste banks in Singaraja and surrounding territories. The idea suddenly emerged to manage plastic waste so that it will not just thrown away as being unused,” he added.

The sorting of plastic waste does not utilize a simple tool but a crushing machine brought in from Pontianak in West Kalimantan. His business continuously develops and within a month he can collect 15 tons of plastic waste to be crushed

Queues have formed on the final stretch to the summit, which is often secured by a single rope line, leading veterans to complain that slow and inexperienced climbers were holding up others and putting them at undue risk.

Everest safety under scrutiny as third climber dies in as many days

EASTLEIGH - Britain’s two most powerful politicians warned on Monday that a vote to leave the European Union in a month’s time could push the country into a year-long recession and cost at least half a million jobs.

With Britain taking its most important strategic decision in decades on June 23, Prime Minister David Cameron and finance minister George Osborne made a fresh series of warnings of how households would be hit by a vote to leave the EU, ranging from a fall in the value of their homes to costlier foreign holidays.

“It would be a DIY recession,” Cameron said, adding leaving the EU move would jeopardise the efforts made by the country to recover from economic hardship caused by the world financial crisis.

“It would be like surviving a fall and then running straight back to the cliff edge. It is the self-destruct option,” he said.

Recent opinion polls have shown voters are leaning towards an “In” decision on June 23, but pollsters say the outcome remains too close to call.

Some polls have also shown the economy growing in importance as an issue for voters, something the “Out” campaign has sought to counter by stressing its message that only leaving the EU can slow high levels of migration.

A new analysis of short-term risks from the referendum published by the finance ministry on Monday said the economy could be as much as 6 percent smaller two years after a Brexit vote than if it the country decides to stay in the EU. Osborne said Britain would lose at least half a million jobs within two years of a vote to leave the European Union and a fall in the value of the pound would push up inflation sharply.

The campaign backing a British EU exit said the Treasury had consistently produced flawed reports and the latest analysis provided nothing on the upside of leaving the bloc, nor on the potential negatives caused by a crisis in the euro zone.

“That makes this report categorically unfair and biased,” said Iain Duncan Smith, a former senior minister in Cameron’s Conservative government. “They cannot forecast short-term successfully, they have never managed to do it.” (rtr)

The Head of the Gianyar Tourism Office, A.A. Dalem Jagadhita, revealed that Interhash poses a cross country activity that this year has entered the 21st implementation.

The event involved the hobbyist of cross country from approximately 100 countries. All the participants passed through the route in appropriate with the selection started from the parking area of Tirta Empul Temple. The event opened on Friday (May 21) lasted for two days.

Short route had a distance of about 5 km. In this route, from the

KATHMANDU - A 43-year-old Indian mountaineer has died while descending from the summit of Mount Everest, in the third fatality on the world’s tallest mountain in as many days since climbing resumed after last year’s avalanche tragedy at Base Camp.

Subash Paul, who climbed the 8,850 metre (29,035 feet) on Saturday, perished the next day due to exhaustion, Wangchu Sherpa of the Trekking Camp Nepal company said on Monday.

An Australian woman and a Dutch national have also died since Friday due to altitude sickness in the notorious ‘death zone’ where the air is so thin that only the fittest can survive without supplementary oxygen.

Hiking officials and climbing veterans say the deaths raise questions about the preparations and safety standards of some climbing operators, with cut-price local companies competing for business as international outfits scale back operations.

This year’s Everest campaign has been hit by high winds on some days when climbers had been counting on the weather ‘window’ to open to make their summit bids before the monsoon sweeps in next month.

BUSINESS Eurozone survey points to faltering economic growth in May

LONDON — Economic growth across the 19-country eurozone is showing further signs of faltering following a strong start to the year. A closely monitored survey of business activity shows that output growth in May slowed to its weakest rate since early 2015.

Financial information company Markit said Monday that its flash composite purchasing managers’ index — a broad gauge of business activity across the services and manufacturing sectors — fell to a 16-month low of 52.9 points in May from April’s 53.0. Anything above 50 indicates expansion.

The reading, which is based on approximately 85-90 percent of the final number of replies to the survey, is the latest in a series of indicators pointing to waning eurozone growth following a perky start to the year. Though Germany and France, the eurozone’s top two economies, performed robustly, there was a cooling elsewhere.

Chris Williamson, Markit’s chief economist, said the survey adds “further to the suggestion that the robust pace of economic growth seen in the first quarter will prove temporary.”

Markit’s survey points to second-quarter quarterly growth of 0.3 percent, which would be lower than the 0.5 percent recorded in the first three months of the year. The first-quarter performance came in the face of huge volatility in global financial markets largely connected to uncertainty over the slowdown in China. Factors that helped the eurozone during the first quarter

included further stimulus measures from the European Central Bank, a lower euro that helped boost exports, and falling prices that increased consumers’ spending power.

The slowdown that appears to be taking place has been predicted by many economists not least because many of the factors that previously buoyed growth have largely played out, such as the fall in the value of the euro. The region also faces a number of headwinds in the months ahead, many beyond its borders, such as the British vote on June 23 on whether to leave the European Union and ongoing uncertainty over China.

Looking ahead, Williamson said the survey points to a further loss of momentum. Inflows of new work, he noted, showed the smallest rise for nearly a year-and-a-half, while optimism about the outlook in the services sector sank to its lowest since July 2015.

“The survey therefore paints a picture of a region stuck in a lowgrowth phase, managing to eke out frustratingly modest output and employment gains despite various ECB stimulus ‘bazookas’, a competitive exchange rate and households benefiting from falling prices,” Williamson said.(ap)

GE announces deals worth over $1.4 billion with Saudi Arabia

DUBAI — General Electric Co. said Monday it made a series of deals with Saudi Arabia worth over $1.4 billion as part of the kingdom’s ambitious plan to wean itself off crude oil.

GE said $1 billion worth of projects would be implemented with the Saudi Arabian Industrial Investments Co., which formed in 2014 by royal order to boost the country’s manufacturing industry.

Another $400 million would go toward building a forging and casting manufacturing facility for the marine and energy industry in the kingdom, with hopes of it being

operations by 2020 and providing over 2,000 jobs, GE said.

In the future, there’s a possibility of another $2 billion in projects coming on line as well, GE said.

GE’s chairman and CEO Jeffrey Immelt said the project showed the company wanted to expand its longtime presence in Saudi Arabia in “a new and visionary way.”

“Together, we will create quality jobs for Saudi youth, ... boost exports, enhance economic competitiveness and support the vision and aspirations of Saudi Arabia,” Immelt said in a statement.

Saudi state-run media did not immediately report on the deals.

Officials in Saudi Arabia could not be immediately reached for comment.

The deal comes as part of the kingdom’s Vision 2030 plan to wean itself off dependence on oil production. The plan, pushed by Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the son of King Salman, also calls for floating a stake in the world’s largest oil company, Saudi Arabian Oil Co., and setting up one of the world’s biggest government investment funds. U.S. lifts arms ban on old foe Vietnam as regional tensions simmer

HANOI - The United States announced an end to its embargo on sales of lethal arms to Vietnam on Monday, an historic step that draws a line under the two countries’ old enmity and underscores their shared concerns about Beijing’s growing military clout.

The move came during President Barack Obama’s first visit to Hanoi, which his welcoming hosts described as the arrival of a warm spring and a new chapter in relations between two countries that were at war four decades ago.

Obama, the third U.S. president to visit Vietnam since diplomatic relations were restored in 1995, has made a strategic ‘rebalance’ towards Asia a centrepiece of his foreign policy.

Vietnam, a neighbour of China, is a key part of that strategy amid worries about Beijing’s assertiveness and sovereignty claims in the South China Sea. The decision to lift the arms trade ban, which followed intense debate within the Obama administration, suggested that such concerns outweighed arguments that Vietnam had not done enough to improve

its human rights record and that Washington would lose leverage for reforms.

Obama told a joint news conference with Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang that disputes in the South China Sea should be resolved peacefully and not by whoever “throws their weight around”. But he insisted the arms embargo move was not linked to China.

“The decision to lift the ban was not based on China or any other considerations. It was based on our desire to complete what has been a lengthy process of moving towards normalisation with Vietnam,” he said. He later added that his visit to a former foe showed “hearts can change and peace is possible”.

The sale of arms, Obama said, would depend on Vietnam’s human rights commitments, which would be made on a case-by-case basis.

Human Rights Watch reacted with dismay to Washington’s decision to toss away a critical lever it might have had to spur political reform in the communist party-ruled state.

Phil Robertson, the watchdog’s Asia director, said in a statement that even as Obama was lifting the arms embargo Vietnamese authorities were arresting a journalist, human rights activists and bloggers on the street and in their houses.

“In one fell swoop, President Obama has jettisoned what remained of U.S. leverage to improve human rights in Vietnam - and basically gotten nothing for it,” he said.

Obama told the news conference with President Quang that Washington would continue to speak out for human rights, including citizens’ right to organise through civil society.

Quang, who actually announced the U.S. embargo lift before Obama could do so, was until recently minister of public security, which activists say harasses and arrests dissidents. (rtr)

Blasts kill more than 120 in Syrian government-held cities

BEIRUT - Bomb blasts killed scores of people in the Syrian coastal cities of Jableh and Tartous on Monday, and wounded many others in the government-controlled territory that hosts Russian military bases, monitors and state media said.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks in the Mediterranean cites that have up to now escaped the worst of the conflict, saying it was targetting members of President Bashar al-Assad’s Alawite minority.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said more than 120 people were killed.

State media said 78 people died in the attacks on Assad’s coastal heartland.

Attackers set off at least five suicide bombs and two devices planted in cars, the Observatory said, the first assaults of their kind in Tartous, where government ally Russia maintains a naval facility, and Jableh in Latakia province, near a Russian-operated air base.

Fighting has increased in other parts of Syria in recent weeks as world powers struggle to revive a threadbare ceasefire and resurrect peace talks that collapsed in Geneva this year.

One of the four blasts in Jableh hit near a hospital and another at a bus station, while the Tartous explosions also targeted a bus station, the Observatory and state media

reported.

Footage broadcast by the staterun Ikhbariya news channel of what it said were scenes of the blasts in Jableh showed several twisted and incinerated cars and minivans.

Pictures circulated by pro-Damascus social media users showed dead bodies in the back of pick-up vans and charred body parts on the ground.

The Observatory said 53 people were killed in Jableh, and gave an earlier toll of more than 48 in Tartous.

State media put the total death toll at 78.

Islamic State claimed the attacks in a statement posted online by the group’s Amaq news agency, saying its fighters had targeted “gatherings of Alawites”.

Syria’s Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi said in an interview with Ikhbariya that terrorists were resorting to bomb attacks against civilians instead of fighting on the frontlines, and vowed to keep battling them. Damascus refers to all insurgents fighting against it in the five-year conflict as terrorists.

Banjarmasin`s rivers as drivers of urban development

JAKARTA - Banjarmasin, the capital city of South Kalimantan province, stands proudly on the banks of many rivers, with its brilliant blue skies and its many vantage points to watch the world go by.

Perfectly situated near the junction of Martapura and Barito rivers, Banjarmasin was a strategic trading port throughout the colonial era and earned its nickname in Indonesia of “The River City”.

Unique architectural heritage, natural splendor and colorful floating markets have made Banjarmasin a charming riverfront getaway in the country.

Having around 102 rivers, the Banjarmasin city government wants to empower them as drivers and the front porch of urban development, and as the traditional way of life in a city still relies on its waterways and riverfront lifestyle. “Therefore, from now on we have to pay more attention to the management of the rivers, particularly their utilization in terms of water transport infrastructure, tourism, fisheries and trade,” he remarks.

Banjarmasin has no natural resources such as mines or forests, and the city only has rivers that will be developed as accessories and as the pulse of the city, as well as drivers of the local economy.

“We know that human civilization originated from the rivers, so we will develop the rivers in an effort to create a more advanced civilization to be better known and be visited by tourists,” Ibnu Sina affirms.

Many other areas in the country also have rivers, but they are not as exotic as those in the city of Banjarmasin, he further explains.

Unfortunately, the rivers in Banjarmasin are not very clean because they are polluted by garbage.

Plastic can be especially hazardous to wildlife. Depending on their form, they can either be ingested causing internal organ failure, or they can cause slow strangulation.

Despite environmental regulations that protect the quality of streams, lakes and wetlands, solid waste in the form of trash, litter, and garbage often ends up in these rivers. As surface waters collect in low-lying areas, anything that is dropped or blown into a watershed can eventually reach a drainage-way.

In both urban and rural areas, these items sometimes are illegally dumped directly into a water-body or wetland, or deposited along riverbanks. Trash also comes from people who fish or participate in other forms of water-related rec-

reation. Regardless of the source or type, trash is a form of water pollution.

In the future, there will be no other choice, besides making the rivers in Banjarmasin clean and beautiful to make them a world tourist destination.

Therefore, river pollution in Banjarmasin should be addressed not only by the local government but also by all levels of society in the city.

Banjarmasin is the home of diversities, and the culture within this city is rich. Moreover, the cuisine also varies. There are so many cuisines with particular tastes that are ready for the taking.

For instance, there are 41 wadai Banjar, or Banjar cake such as Putri Selat, Amparan Tatak, Bingka Barandam, and Kalalapon. Those

cakes are sometimes served as desserts, while in the main course there is, Ketupat Kandangan, Lontong, Babungku, and the famous of Soto Banjar.

Banjarmasin also has some attractions, such as the famous floating market, which has become a unique destination of the city.

The other attractions are the Sultan Suriansyah mosque, the Sabilal Muhtadin great mosque, Martapura river, Maskot Park and the Agro tourism park.

The tourists who come to visit Banjarmasin can take the river tour which starts from the Martapura river and proceeds via Kuin river, Kuin creek, the floating market, and Kembang Island, from where it enters the Barito river, and then wends its way back to the Martapura river. (ant)

The dead victims are identified as Parmi (50), Mae (17), Eni

(45), Nabila (7), and Musa (55).

“A 10 year boy named RizaL, is still missing,” Agus said, adding there were also villagers seriously injured including Anen (55), Mamur (47) and Raza, a 14 month old baby.

Villagers said at least 14 houses collapsed hit by the floods in the village of Cihideung when the people were asleep. In the village of Bukanagara, there were landslides in three locations. (ant)

The Warriors were able to come back and tie the game at 38-38 in the second quarter. But from that point on, Oklahoma City pulled away, outscoring the Warriors 34-9 the rest of the half.

The Thunder held a 72-47 halftime lead despite connecting on

only three 3-pointers. They were able to do most of their work in the paint (34 points) and on fastbreaks (22).

Draymond Green, who was held to six points, four rebounds and three assists, kicked Thunder center Steven Adams in the groin and was called for a controversial Flagrant Foul 1.

The pummeling continued in the third quarter. Golden State had no answers for any part of Oklahoma City’s offensive attack and defensive ferocity. Curry and Thompson did not help matters by missing shots they normally knock down.

MOSCOW - Canada deservedly beat Finland 2-0 in the final of the world ice hockey championship on Sunday to become the first country since Russia in 2009 to retain the title.

Russia secured the bronze medal by thrashing the United States 7-2 to ensure they have now won a medal at eight of the last 10 world championships.

Canada and the Finns had met earlier in the competition when they battled it out to see who would finish top of Group B. On that occasion Finland thrashed their opponents 4-0 but there was to be no repeat in the final.

This time, Canada were disciplined and managed to keep a lid on Finland’s potent offense. One of the youngest players on the ice, Connor McDavid, got the game-winning goal after 11 minutes of the first period.

Finland’s much-vaunted offense, which included teenage sensation Patrik Laine, just could not get going and Canada’s goaltender Cam Talbot stopped 16 shots for his shut out.

Canada on the other hand peppered Mikko Koskinen’s net but they managed to double their lead only with a second left on the clock in the final period. Finland had pulled Koskinen for an extra attacker, which allowed Matt Duchene to score an empty netter and ensure that Canada retained the trophy.

In the bronze-medal game, Sergei Mozyakin scored twice for the hosts, while the impressive Artemi Panarin finished with a goal and two assists. Vadim Shipachyov scored Russia’s seventh of the evening to cap an impressive tournament by notching up his 18th point.

“It would have been a good performance for me if we had won the cup,” said Shipachyov. “But we didn’t, so I can only say I’ve had an okay tournament.”

Despite the final scoreline, the Americans outshot Russia 30-29. After pool loses to Canada, Germany, Finland and Slovakia, the U.S. exceeded expectations to get so far in the tournament.

“We had a game plan,” said U.S. captain Matt Hendricks.

“We knew what we had to do; we just didn’t execute. You have to give Russia a lot of credit. They played a very strong game.” (rtr)

MADRID - Despite Barcelona’s exit from the Champions League at the quarter-final stage, coach Luis Enrique said their victory over Sevilla in the King’s Cup on Sunday had capped a “fantastic” season.

Spanish top flight champions Barcelona beat Sevilla 2-0 after extra-time, thanks to goals from Jordi Alba and Neymar, playing nearly 90 minutes with 10 men after Javier Mascherano’s red card.

“It was a spectacular end to the season,” he told a news conference.

Asked to sum up the season in one word, he replied. “Fantastic.”

“This team is made of champions. We must be proud of these players,” he added. “When the team had to defend, we were able to close the gaps, compete and play football. It’s time to enjoy it.”

By defending their King’s Cup trophy, Barcelona won a seventh title from nine competitions under Luis Enrique. As well last season’s league, King’s Cup and Champions League treble, they won the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup with him at the helm.

“The truth is I’ve always fallen on my feet here,” said Luis Enrique, who was serenaded by fans at the end of the final at the Vicente Calderon. “I feel like just another Cata-

lan, although I am 1,000 percent from Gijon and an Asturian. I can’t feel more valued and loved. That’s since I signed here in 1996.”

Sevilla coach Unai Emery was proud of his players too, highlighting the fact that their Europa League win on Wednesday had given them less time to prepare for the game. “In the second half we had two good chances,” he said.

Luis Suarez in tears after injury, could miss Copa

MADRID — Luis Suarez’ participation in the Copa America Centenario is in doubt after the Uruguay striker left Spain’s Copa del Rey final with an apparent muscle injury and in tears on Sunday.

Suarez is expected to undergo tests Monday to find out the extent of the right leg injury that forced him to limp off the pitch in the second half of the game against Sevilla at the Vicente Calderon Stadium in Madrid.

Arriola has goal, assist in US debut, 3-1 win at Puerto Rico

BAYAMON — Paul Arriola not only was able to make his national team debut for the United States on Sunday, he became the first player since Landon Donovan in 2000 to score a goal and have an assist in his initial appearance.

“I thought today that I made the most of my chance,” he said after the 3-1 exhibition victory over Puerto Rico, the first of three matches for the team ahead of next month’s Copa America. Tim Ream and Bobby Wood also scored for the U.S., which dominated possession.

A 21-year-old from Chula Vista, California, who plays for Tijuana in Mexico, Arriola is not on the tournament roster but was among seven additional players called in for a training camp while regulars remained with the Major League Soccer teams through the weekend.

He became the first player to score in his debut since Juan Agudelo at South Africa in November 2010.

“He did well, and he knows he has a huge learning curve still ahead of him,” U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said.

Ream, cut from the Copa roster, put the U.S. ahead in the 20th minute with his first international goal. Arriola fed Wood in the 34th for a 2-0 lead, Wood’s fifth goal in 18 national team games.

Luis Betancur cut Puerto Rico’s deficit in the 42nd against Brad Guzan, designated the first-choice goalkeeper by Klinsmann on Saturday. Arriola restored the two-goal lead in the 56th. Michael Orozco made a 30-yard pass from just past the midfield stripe that Bedoya ran

onto before dribbling toward the end line and crossing. Arriola tapped the pass into an open goal with his left foot from 2 yards.

“I’m usually the guy getting down the line and sending the crosses in,” Arriola said. “And today fortunately I was able to be on the end of one, which in my club career hardly ever happens.”

On an afternoon with 88-degree heat and 58 percent humidity at kickoff, Ream scored his first goal in 21 international appearances. After Alfredo Morales’ 30-yard effort was parried by Matthew Sanchez, Ream drove in the rebound with a left-footed shot from a sharp angle outside the 6-yard box.

Wood doubled the lead when, with two Puerto Rican players down on the field, he ran onto a pass from Arriola. Wood took a pair of touches as he went around Emmanuel D’Andrea and lifted the ball over Sanchez from 7 yards. Fans booed the U.S. for not kicking the ball out of play.

Tim Howard took over from Guzan at the beginning of the second half, only his second substitute appearance along with 106 starts. Defender Matt Miazga and midfielder Emerson Hyndman made their second international appearances when they entered for the second half.

Fabrice Picault, a 25-year-old forward, made his U.S. debut when he came in for Wood in the 71st minute. Eric Lichaj replaced Bedoya in his first appearance since November 2013, and Julian Green made his first appearance since 2014.

Man Utd shares waver in Frankfurt as Mourinho hire expected

LONDON - Shares in English soccer giant Manchester United wavered in volatile trading on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange on Monday, following media reports that the club was set to replace its manager with former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

Manchester United’s main stock market listing is in New York , although it has a secondary, and less widely traded, share listing in Frankfurt.

The Premier League club’s Frankfurt-listed shares briefly opened up 2.4 percent, but then slipped back to stand 2.5 percent lower. Manchester United’s shares closed up 2.4 percent in New York on May 20.

British media reported that

Mourinho, 53, would take over at Manchester United even though Dutchman Louis van Gaal, who steered United to an extra-time FA Cup final win over Crystal Palace on Saturday, had a year left on his contract.

Mourinho, sacked by Chelsea in December after his second spell in charge of the west London club, has also managed Porto, Inter Milan and Real Madrid, winning Europe’s premier Champions League tournament with both Porto and Inter Milan.

BAYAMON — Paul Arriola not only was able to make his national team debut for the United States on Sunday, he became the first player since Landon Donovan in 2000 to score a goal and have an assist in his initial appearance.

“I thought today that I made the most of my chance,” he said after the 3-1 exhibition victory over Puerto Rico, the first of three matches for the team ahead of next month’s Copa America. Tim Ream and Bobby Wood also scored for the U.S., which dominated possession.

A 21-year-old from Chula Vista, California, who plays for Tijuana in Mexico, Arriola is not on the tournament roster but was among seven additional players called in for a training camp while regulars remained with the Major League Soccer teams through the weekend.

He became the first player to score in his debut since Juan Agudelo at South Africa in November 2010.

“He did well, and he knows he has a huge learning curve still ahead of him,” U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said.

Ream, cut from the Copa roster, put the U.S. ahead in the 20th minute with his first international goal. Arriola fed Wood in the 34th for a 2-0 lead, Wood’s fifth goal in 18 national team games.

Luis Betancur cut Puerto Rico’s deficit in the 42nd against Brad Guzan, designated the first-choice goalkeeper by Klinsmann on Saturday. Arriola restored the two-goal lead in the 56th. Michael Orozco made a 30-yard pass from just past the midfield stripe that Bedoya ran

onto before dribbling toward the end line and crossing. Arriola tapped the pass into an open goal with his left foot from 2 yards.

“I’m usually the guy getting down the line and sending the crosses in,” Arriola said. “And today fortunately I was able to be on the end of one, which in my club career hardly ever happens.”

Bedoya, who captained the U.S. for the first time, appeared to off in the 63rd minute with a sore right ankle, but the team said after the game he was not hurt.

The U.S., tied for 29th in the FIFA rankings, had an 11-5 advantage in shots in its first game against Puerto Rico, which is tied for 152nd.

Among the starters, only Guzan, right back DeAndre Yedlin, central defender John Brooks and Bedoya appear to have a the best chance to be in the lineup against Colombia in the Copa America opener on June 3. Orozco was paired with Brooks in central defense, and Ream started at left back.

Defenders Fabian Johnson and Geoff Cameron, both rehabbing leg injuries, remained in the continental U.S. and will rejoin the team on Monday in Texas ahead of Wednesday’s exhibition against Ecuador in Frisco. The U.S. also plays Bolivia on Saturday at Kansas City, Kansas.

The U.S. Soccer Federation went ahead with this game despite concern about the Zika virus, which led Major League Baseball to shift a two-game series between the Marlins and Pittsburgh Pirates from Puerto Rico back to Miami.

On an afternoon with 88-degree heat and 58 percent humidity at kickoff, Ream scored his first goal in 21 international appearances. After Alfredo Morales’ 30-yard effort was parried by Matthew Sanchez, Ream drove in the rebound with a left-footed shot from a sharp angle outside the 6-yard box.

Wood doubled the lead when, with two Puerto Rican players down on the field, he ran onto a pass from Arriola. Wood took a pair of touches as he went around Emmanuel D’Andrea and lifted the ball over Sanchez from 7 yards. Fans booed the U.S. for not kicking the ball out of play.

Betancur, a 21-year-old forward with Florida International, cut the deficit in the 42nd minute with a 23yard shot over Guzan’s outstretched left hand after the Ream turned over the ball on a throw-in and Joseph Marrero’s pass split the defense.

Tim Howard took over from Guzan at the beginning of the second half, only his second substitute appearance along with 106 starts. Defender Matt Miazga and midfielder Emerson Hyndman made their second international appearances when they entered for the second half.

Fabrice Picault, a 25-year-old forward, made his U.S. debut when he came in for Wood in the 71st minute. Eric Lichaj replaced Bedoya in his first appearance since November 2013, and Julian Green made his first appearance since 2014.

Man Utd shares waver in Frankfurt as Mourinho hire expected

LONDON - Shares in English soccer giant Manchester United wavered in volatile trading on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange on Monday, following media reports that the club was set to replace its manager with former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

Manchester United’s main stock market listing is in New York , although it has a secondary, and less widely traded, share listing in Frankfurt.

The Premier League club’s Frankfurt-listed shares briefly opened up 2.4 percent, but then slipped back to stand 2.5 percent lower. Manchester United’s shares closed up 2.4 percent in New York on May 20.

British media reported that

Mourinho, 53, would take over at Manchester United even though Dutchman Louis van Gaal, who steered United to an extra-time FA Cup final win over Crystal Palace on Saturday, had a year left on his contract.

Mourinho, sacked by Chelsea in December after his second spell in charge of the west London club, has also managed Porto, Inter Milan and Real Madrid, winning Europe’s premier Champions League tournament with both Porto and Inter Milan.

Manchester United’s main New York-listed shares have fallen by around 6 percent so far in 2016.

MOSCOW - Canada deservedly beat Finland 2-0 in the final of the world ice hockey championship on Sunday to become the first country since Russia in 2009 to retain the title.

Russia secured the bronze medal by thrashing the United States 7-2 to ensure they have now won a medal at eight of the last 10 world championships.

Canada and the Finns had met earlier in the competition when they battled it out to see who would finish top of Group B. On that occasion Finland thrashed their opponents 4-0 but there was to be no repeat in the final.

This time, Canada were disciplined and managed to keep a lid on Finland’s potent offense. One of the youngest players on the ice, Connor McDavid, got the game-winning goal after 11 minutes of the first period.

Finland’s much-vaunted offense, which included teenage sensation Patrik Laine, just could not get going and Canada’s goaltender Cam Talbot stopped 16 shots for his shut out.

Canada on the other hand peppered Mikko Koskinen’s net but they managed to double their lead only with a second left on the clock in the final period. Finland had pulled Koskinen for an extra attacker, which allowed Matt Duchene to score an empty netter and ensure that Canada retained the trophy.

In the bronze-medal game, Sergei Mozyakin scored twice for the hosts, while the impressive Artemi Panarin finished with a goal and two assists. Vadim Shipachyov scored Russia’s seventh of the evening to cap an impressive tournament by notching up his 18th point.

“It would have been a good performance for me if we had won the cup,” said Shipachyov. “But we didn’t, so I can only say I’ve had an okay tournament.”

Despite the final scoreline, the Americans outshot Russia 30-29. After pool loses to Canada, Germany, Finland and Slovakia, the U.S. exceeded expectations to get so far in the tournament.

“We had a game plan,” said U.S. captain Matt Hendricks.

U.S. lifts arms ban on old foe Vietnam as regional tensions simmer

HANOI - The United States announced an end to its embargo on sales of lethal arms to Vietnam on Monday, an historic step that draws a line under the two countries’ old enmity and underscores their shared concerns about Beijing’s growing military clout.

The move came during President Barack Obama’s first visit to Hanoi, which his welcoming hosts described as the arrival of a warm spring and a new chapter in relations between two countries that were at war four decades ago.

Obama, the third U.S. president to visit Vietnam since diplomatic relations were restored in 1995, has made a strategic ‘rebalance’ towards Asia a centrepiece of his foreign policy.

Vietnam, a neighbour of China, is a key part of that strategy amid worries about Beijing’s assertiveness and sovereignty claims in the South China Sea. The decision to lift the arms trade ban, which followed intense debate within the Obama administration, suggested that such concerns outweighed arguments that Vietnam had not done enough to improve

its human rights record and that Washington would lose leverage for reforms.

Obama told a joint news conference with Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang that disputes in the South China Sea should be resolved peacefully and not by whoever “throws their weight around”. But he insisted the arms embargo move was not linked to China.

“The decision to lift the ban was not based on China or any other considerations. It was based on our desire to complete what has been a lengthy process of moving towards normalisation with Vietnam,” he said. He later added that his visit to a former foe showed “hearts can change and peace is possible”.

The sale of arms, Obama said, would depend on Vietnam’s human rights commitments, which would be made on a case-by-case basis.

Human Rights Watch reacted with dismay to Washington’s decision to toss away a critical lever it might have had to spur political reform in the communist party-ruled state.

Phil Robertson, the watchdog’s Asia director, said in a statement that even as Obama was lifting the arms embargo Vietnamese authorities were arresting a journalist, human rights activists and bloggers on the street and in their houses.

“In one fell swoop, President Obama has jettisoned what remained of U.S. leverage to improve human rights in Vietnam - and basically gotten nothing for it,” he said.

Obama told the news conference with President Quang that Washington would continue to speak out for human rights, including citizens’ right to organise through civil society.

Quang, who actually announced the U.S. embargo lift before Obama could do so, was until recently minister of public security, which activists say harasses and arrests dissidents. (rtr)

Blasts kill more than 120 in Syrian government-held cities

BEIRUT - Bomb blasts killed scores of people in the Syrian coastal cities of Jableh and Tartous on Monday, and wounded many others in the government-controlled territory that hosts Russian military bases, monitors and state media said.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks in the Mediterranean cites that have up to now escaped the worst of the conflict, saying it was targetting members of President Bashar al-Assad’s Alawite minority.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said more than 120 people were killed.

State media said 78 people died in the attacks on Assad’s coastal heartland.

Attackers set off at least five suicide bombs and two devices planted in cars, the Observatory said, the first assaults of their kind in Tartous, where government ally Russia maintains a naval facility, and Jableh in Latakia province, near a Russian-operated air base.

Fighting has increased in other parts of Syria in recent weeks as world powers struggle to revive a threadbare ceasefire and resurrect peace talks that collapsed in Geneva this year.

One of the four blasts in Jableh hit near a hospital and another at a bus station, while the Tartous explosions also targeted a bus station, the Observatory and state media

reported.

Footage broadcast by the staterun Ikhbariya news channel of what it said were scenes of the blasts in Jableh showed several twisted and incinerated cars and minivans.

Pictures circulated by pro-Damascus social media users showed dead bodies in the back of pick-up vans and charred body parts on the ground.

The Observatory said 53 people were killed in Jableh, and gave an earlier toll of more than 48 in Tartous.

State media put the total death toll at 78.

Islamic State claimed the attacks in a statement posted online by the group’s Amaq news agency, saying its fighters had targeted “gatherings of Alawites”.

Syria’s Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi said in an interview with Ikhbariya that terrorists were resorting to bomb attacks against civilians instead of fighting on the frontlines, and vowed to keep battling them. Damascus refers to all insurgents fighting against it in the five-year conflict as terrorists.

Bombings in the capital Damascus and western city Homs earlier this year killed scores and were claimed by Islamic State, which is fighting against government forces and their allies in some areas, and separately against its jihadist rival al Qaeda and other insurgent groups. (rtr)

Banjarmasin`s rivers as drivers of urban development

JAKARTA - Banjarmasin, the capital city of South Kalimantan province, stands proudly on the banks of many rivers, with its brilliant blue skies and its many vantage points to watch the world go by.

Perfectly situated near the junction of Martapura and Barito rivers, Banjarmasin was a strategic trading port throughout the colonial era and earned its nickname in Indonesia of “The River City”.

Unique architectural heritage, natural splendor and colorful floating markets have made Banjarmasin a charming riverfront getaway in the country.

Having around 102 rivers, the Banjarmasin city government wants to empower them as drivers and the front porch of urban development, and as the traditional way of life in a city still relies on its waterways and riverfront lifestyle. Exploring this city through its river life is a great introduction to its dynamic culture.

Banjarmasin was established in 1526 but the city had actually been settled centuries earlier with its legendary history spanning the ancient South Kalimantan Kingdoms of Nan Srunai, Negara Dipa and Negara Daha.

Therefore, Banjarmasin has been classified as a world heritage city, not because of the many objects of historic or heritage buildings, but because of the rivers that divide the city of approximately 98 square kilometers with a population of about

750 thousand inhabitants.

The city has more than a hundred rivers, but so far they are not as empowered as a driving force of urban development, mayor of Banjarmasin Ibnu Sina says.

“Therefore, from now on we have to pay more attention to the management of the rivers, particularly their utilization in terms of water transport infrastructure, tourism, fisheries and trade,” he remarks.

Banjarmasin has no natural resources such as mines or forests, and the city only has rivers that will be developed as accessories and as the pulse of the city, as well as drivers of the local economy.

“We know that human civilization originated from the rivers, so we will develop the rivers in an effort to create a more advanced civilization to be better known and be visited by tourists,” Ibnu Sina affirms.

Many other areas in the country also have rivers, but they are not as exotic as those in the city of Banjarmasin, he further explains.

Unfortunately, the rivers in Banjarmasin are not very clean because they are polluted by garbage.

The most common litter in the rivers is household trash, including plastic cups, plastic bags and wrapping materials, fast-food wrappers,

Plastic can be especially hazardous to wildlife. Depending on their form, they can either be ingested causing internal organ failure, or they can cause slow strangulation.

Despite environmental regulations that protect the quality of streams, lakes and wetlands, solid waste in the form of trash, litter, and garbage often ends up in these rivers. As surface waters collect in low-lying areas, anything that is dropped or blown into a watershed can eventually reach a drainage-way.

In both urban and rural areas, these items sometimes are illegally dumped directly into a water-body or wetland, or deposited along riverbanks. Trash also comes from people who fish or participate in other forms of water-related rec-

reation. Regardless of the source or type, trash is a form of water pollution.

In the future, there will be no other choice, besides making the rivers in Banjarmasin clean and beautiful to make them a world tourist destination.

Therefore, river pollution in Banjarmasin should be addressed not only by the local government but also by all levels of society in the city.

Banjarmasin is the home of diversities, and the culture within this city is rich. Moreover, the cuisine also varies. There are so many cuisines with particular tastes that are ready for the taking.

For instance, there are 41 wadai Banjar, or Banjar cake such as Putri Selat, Amparan Tatak, Bingka Barandam, and Kalalapon. Those

cakes are sometimes served as desserts, while in the main course there is, Ketupat Kandangan, Lontong, Babungku, and the famous of Soto Banjar.

Banjarmasin also has some attractions, such as the famous floating market, which has become a unique destination of the city.

The other attractions are the Sultan Suriansyah mosque, the Sabilal Muhtadin great mosque, Martapura river, Maskot Park and the Agro tourism park.

The tourists who come to visit Banjarmasin can take the river tour which starts from the Martapura river and proceeds via Kuin river, Kuin creek, the floating market, and Kembang Island, from where it enters the Barito river, and then wends its way back to the Martapura river. (ant)

The dead victims are identified as Parmi (50), Mae (17), Eni

“A 10 year boy named RizaL, is still missing,” Agus said, adding there were also villagers seriously injured including Anen (55), Mamur (47) and Raza, a 14 month old baby.

Villagers said at least 14 houses collapsed hit by the floods in the village of Cihideung when the people were asleep. In the village of Bukanagara, there were landslides in three locations. (ant)

BUSINESS Eurozone survey points to faltering economic growth in May

LONDON — Economic growth across the 19-country eurozone is showing further signs of faltering following a strong start to the year. A closely monitored survey of business activity shows that output growth in May slowed to its weakest rate since early 2015.

Financial information company Markit said Monday that its flash composite purchasing managers’ index — a broad gauge of business activity across the services and manufacturing sectors — fell to a 16-month low of 52.9 points in May from April’s 53.0. Anything above 50 indicates expansion.

The reading, which is based on approximately 85-90 percent of the final number of replies to the survey, is the latest in a series of indicators pointing to waning eurozone growth following a perky start to the year. Though Germany and France, the eurozone’s top two economies, performed robustly, there was a cooling elsewhere.

Chris Williamson, Markit’s chief economist, said the survey adds “further to the suggestion that the robust pace of economic growth seen in the first quarter will prove temporary.”

Markit’s survey points to second-quarter quarterly growth of 0.3 percent, which would be lower than the 0.5 percent recorded in the first three months of the year. The first-quarter performance came in the face of huge volatility in global financial markets largely connected to uncertainty over the slowdown in China. Factors that helped the eurozone during the first quarter

included further stimulus measures from the European Central Bank, a lower euro that helped boost exports, and falling prices that increased consumers’ spending power.

The slowdown that appears to be taking place has been predicted by many economists not least because many of the factors that previously buoyed growth have largely played out, such as the fall in the value of the euro. The region also faces a number of headwinds in the months ahead, many beyond its borders, such as the British vote on June 23 on whether to leave the European Union and ongoing uncertainty over China.

Looking ahead, Williamson said the survey points to a further loss of momentum. Inflows of new work, he noted, showed the smallest rise for nearly a year-and-a-half, while optimism about the outlook in the services sector sank to its lowest since July 2015.

“The survey therefore paints a picture of a region stuck in a lowgrowth phase, managing to eke out frustratingly modest output and employment gains despite various ECB stimulus ‘bazookas’, a competitive exchange rate and households benefiting from falling prices,” Williamson said.(ap)

GE announces deals worth over $1.4 billion with Saudi Arabia

DUBAI — General Electric Co. said Monday it made a series of deals with Saudi Arabia worth over $1.4 billion as part of the kingdom’s ambitious plan to wean itself off crude oil.

GE said $1 billion worth of projects would be implemented with the Saudi Arabian Industrial Investments Co., which formed in 2014 by royal order to boost the country’s manufacturing industry.

Another $400 million would go toward building a forging and casting manufacturing facility for the marine and energy industry in the kingdom, with hopes of it being

operations by 2020 and providing over 2,000 jobs, GE said.

In the future, there’s a possibility of another $2 billion in projects coming on line as well, GE said.

GE’s chairman and CEO Jeffrey Immelt said the project showed the company wanted to expand its longtime presence in Saudi Arabia in “a new and visionary way.”

“Together, we will create quality jobs for Saudi youth, ... boost exports, enhance economic competitiveness and support the vision and aspirations of Saudi Arabia,” Immelt said in a statement.

Saudi state-run media did not immediately report on the deals.

Officials in Saudi Arabia could not be immediately reached for comment.

The deal comes as part of the kingdom’s Vision 2030 plan to wean itself off dependence on oil production. The plan, pushed by Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the son of King Salman, also calls for floating a stake in the world’s largest oil company, Saudi Arabian Oil Co., and setting up one of the world’s biggest government investment funds. Creativity of processing plastic waste into pellets penetrates China

UK’s Cameron warns leaving EU is “the self-destruct option” as vote approaches

SINGARAJA - Creative endeavor to process plastic bottle waste is carried out by Putu Eka Darmawan, 27, a young villager from Penglatan, Buleleng. At the same time, he can create job opportunity and generate high profit. Plastic bottles commonly disposed by people are taken advantage by using plastic crushing machine to be exported to China.

Eka told that he was assisted by two youths as skilled labor to sort out quality plastic bottles and crush them into fine granules. The cleaning process is begun by putting hundreds of bottles into two pools.

The bottles are washed before being put into crushing machine and previously dried in the sun. “I process these plastic bottles in the plastic warehouse. It is specially used to accommodate recycled plastic bottles after being processed into fine grains,” he said, Sunday (May 22).

Results of the crushed plastic waste are sent to Surabaya. From Surabaya, it will be further sorted by collector and then exported to China as raw material for making yarn. The creativity of Eka creates an independent entrepreneur. So far, he can send 10 tons of crushed plastic of various types every month to Surabaya. The price of crushed plastic is sold for IDR 3,500 per kg.

The opportunities created by Eka are not easy to do at the beginning.

Experience after experience since working on cruise ships was used as motivation and inspiration to work. He prepared venture capital as much as IDR 400 million to begin the plastic waste processing.

He told that the profit is not large but is able to give a positive benefit to society of Buleleng.

“I do not get many profits. But at least in the long term, this noble ideal will not only give profit to himself but also something valuable and useful to society at large,” he said.

Currently, Eka still utilizes the warehouse newly established two months ago. He still needs more supplies of plastic waste in the future. He decided to process waste after being inspired by meeting with environmental organization.

After that, he had an idea why most young people are reluctant to process plastic waste. He finally succeeded to get profits from the crushed plastic waste.

“He collects plastic waste from nine waste banks in Singaraja and surrounding territories. The idea suddenly emerged to manage plastic waste so that it will not just thrown away as being unused,” he added.

The sorting of plastic waste does not utilize a simple tool but a crushing machine brought in from Pontianak in West Kalimantan. His business continuously develops and within a month he can collect 15 tons of plastic waste to be crushed

Queues have formed on the final stretch to the summit, which is often secured by a single rope line, leading veterans to complain that slow and inexperienced climbers were holding up others and putting them at undue risk.

Everest safety under scrutiny as third climber dies in as many days

EASTLEIGH - Britain’s two most powerful politicians warned on Monday that a vote to leave the European Union in a month’s time could push the country into a year-long recession and cost at least half a million jobs.

With Britain taking its most important strategic decision in decades on June 23, Prime Minister David Cameron and finance minister George Osborne made a fresh series of warnings of how households would be hit by a vote to leave the EU, ranging from a fall in the value of their homes to costlier foreign holidays.

“It would be a DIY recession,” Cameron said, adding leaving the EU move would jeopardise the efforts made by the country to recover from economic hardship caused by the world financial crisis.

“It would be like surviving a fall and then running straight back to the cliff edge. It is the self-destruct option,” he said.

Recent opinion polls have shown voters are leaning towards an “In” decision on June 23, but pollsters say the outcome remains too close to call.

Some polls have also shown the economy growing in importance as an issue for voters, something the “Out” campaign has sought to counter by stressing its message that only leaving the EU can slow high levels of migration.

A new analysis of short-term risks from the referendum published by the finance ministry on Monday said the economy could be as much as 6 percent smaller two years after a Brexit vote than if it the country decides to stay in the EU. Osborne said Britain would lose at least half a million jobs within two years of a vote to leave the European Union and a fall in the value of the pound would push up inflation sharply.

The campaign backing a British EU exit said the Treasury had consistently produced flawed reports and the latest analysis provided nothing on the upside of leaving the bloc, nor on the potential negatives caused by a crisis in the euro zone.

“That makes this report categorically unfair and biased,” said Iain Duncan Smith, a former senior minister in Cameron’s Conservative government. “They cannot forecast short-term successfully, they have never managed to do it.” (rtr)

GIANYAR - Gianyar district became one of the regions in Bali chosen as the location of the implementation of the International Hash (Interhash) 2016. The event is also expected to become a promotional event in boosting tourist visits.

The Head of the Gianyar Tourism Office, A.A. Dalem Jagadhita, revealed that Interhash poses a cross country activity that this year has entered the 21st implementation.

The event involved the hobbyist of cross country from approximately 100 countries. All the participants passed through the route in appropriate with the selection started from the parking area of Tirta Empul Temple. The event opened on Friday (May 21) lasted for two days.

Short route had a distance of about 5 km. In this route, from the

start point participants turned back to Tampaksiring village and back to the parking area. In the middle route, the participants came down to Kedisan village, Sukawati village and returned to the area of Tirta Empul Temple.

After that, the long route took approximately 7 km, where the participants passed through Manukaya Anyar village, Penempahan hamlet and went back to the parking area of Tirta Empul. On the second day, the participants took the start in the area of the Goa Gajah tourist attraction.

According to Dalem Jagadhita, Indonesia and especially Bali was chosen as the location of the event because it has indeed been well known to the community of world tourism as the region offering magnificent natural panorama. Especially for Gianyar, similar event was

“However, this event has international scale. Thus, thousands of participants from 100 countries take part,” he said.

KATHMANDU - A 43-year-old Indian mountaineer has died while descending from the summit of Mount Everest, in the third fatality on the world’s tallest mountain in as many days since climbing resumed after last year’s avalanche tragedy at Base Camp.

Subash Paul, who climbed the 8,850 metre (29,035 feet) on Saturday, perished the next day due to exhaustion, Wangchu Sherpa of the Trekking Camp Nepal company said on Monday.

An Australian woman and a Dutch national have also died since Friday due to altitude sickness in the notorious ‘death zone’ where the air is so thin that only the fittest can survive without supplementary oxygen.

Hiking officials and climbing veterans say the deaths raise questions about the preparations and safety standards of some climbing operators, with cut-price local companies competing for business as international outfits scale back operations.

This year’s Everest campaign has been hit by high winds on some days when climbers had been counting on the weather ‘window’ to open to make their summit bids before the monsoon sweeps in next month.

Bone cement company accused of experimenting on humans

SEATTLE — Reba Golden hurt her back after falling two floors while building an addition to her house in Honduras. But when she returned to Seattle for a routine spinal surgery, she suffered blood clots, severe bleeding and died in 2007 on the operating table.

Joan Bryant’s back had bothered her since a 1990 car accident, so in 2009 she sought help from a Seattle spinal surgeon, but she bled out on the operating table and could not be revived.

Like at least three spinal-surgery patients before them, Golden and Bryant died after their doctor injected bone cement into their spine and some of the material leaked into their blood stream, causing clotting.

The patients were never told Norian bone cement wasn’t approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Instead, Norian and parent company Synthes used surgeons in

what one doctor called “human experimentation.” Federal prosecutors say the aim was to skirt a long, costly regulatory process.

The Golden and Bryant families have filed lawsuits against Dr. Jens Chapman, the companies, the University of Washington, Harborview Medical Center and Washington state. The lawsuits say Chapman knew the cement caused lethal clotting, and that the university and hospital knew or should have known the product had been prohibited for such use. The first trial is scheduled for June in Seattle.

daughter Cynthia Wilson, also accuses Chapman, Synthes President Hansjorg Wyss and the university of running a criminal enterprise under Washington’s Criminal Profiteering Act. Synthes and Norian, along with four top executives, were indicted in 2009 on charges of conducting unauthorized clinical trials despite warnings that the bone cement caused deadly blood clots. Norian agreed to pay a $22.5 million penalty, Synthes paid a $669,800 fine, and the executives went to prison.

Tina Mankowski, a spokeswoman for Chapman, the university and the medical center, said they “vigorously deny any wrongdoing.” Jodie Wertheim, a spokeswoman for Synthes said the company can’t comment on pending litigation. (ap)

Solar plane lands in Dayton, Ohio on latest leg of roundthe-world flight

OHIO - An experimental airplane powered solely by energy from the sun landed in Ohio on Saturday night on the latest leg of its historic bid by pilots and developers to fly around the globe without a drop of fuel.

The single-seat Solar Impulse 2 aircraft arrived in Dayton shortly before 10 p.m. local time, some 17 hours after leaving Phoenix Goodyear Airport, the project team said on its official Twitter page.

“People told the WrightBrothers & us what we wanted to achieve was impossible,” said Bertrand Piccard after landing.

“They were wrong!”

The locale was of special significance to the pilots, as the home base to aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright.

Amanda Wright Lane, a descendant of the brothers, neither of whom ever married, was on hand to welcome the flight.

With a wingspan exceeding that of a Boeing 747 but an ultra-light carbon-fiber skin and overall weight of a car, the Solar Impulse cruises at speeds ranging from only 34 to 62 miles per hour (55 to 100 kph).

The four engines of the propeller-driven aircraft are powered exclusively by energy collected from more than 17,000 solar cells built into its wings. Excess energy is stored in four batteries

during daylight hours to keep the plane flying after dark.

The plane can climb to 28,000 feet (8,500 meters), but generally flies at lower altitudes at night to conserve energy.

Piccard and Andre Borschberg have been taking turns piloting the plane on each leg of the journey. Both have trained to stay alert for long stretches of time by practicing meditation and hypnosis.

Borschberg set a new endurance record for the longest nonstop solo flight last July during a 118-hour trans-Pacific crossing, over five days and five nights, from Japan to Hawaii. He also set new duration and distance records for solar-powered flight.

Battery damage sustained during the crossing kept the aircraft grounded for nine months.

The Swiss team’s ultimate goal is to achieve the first roundthe-world solar-powered flight, part of its campaign to bolster support for clean-energy technologies.

The team hopes eventually to complete its circumnavigation in Abu Dhabi, the starting point for the journey in March 2015.

The two men completed an earlier multi-flight crossing of the United States in a prototype of the solar plane in 2013 as a precursor to their globe-circling quest. (rtr)

Undoubtedly this attraction will get the andrenaline pumping, despite the calm and

beautiful scenery. Foreign travelers are charged IDR 100,000 per ticket while domestic travelers are charged IDR 50,000 per ride.

“Not all travelers dare to come and try it out”, he said adding that in fact it is mostly domestic travellers who are brave enough to try it out.

For those who do not know, flying fox utilizes two steel straps that run along 100 meters.

In addition to the steel straps, participants are also tied to the straps with a safety belt to ensure their security Staff always check to make sure that everything is secure, and participants are always given instructions before sliding down the cable for 100 meters.

Made Krama, explained that the every week two staff members grease the lines so that the cables do not rust and so that the ride down is smooth -especially because sea water is apt to affect the cables.

All the equipment and lines for this flying fox were imported from Thailand by an Australian man known as Mr. Mark who has invested IDR 80 million in this tourist attraction. Chief of the Karangasem Health Agency, IGM Tirtayana, said two days ago in Karangasem that aside from planning the mosquito nests eradication (PSN), it will continuously anticipate the attack of dengue fever through fogging against adult mosquitoes.

LOS ANGELES - “The Angry Birds Movie” has flown to victory at the U.S. box office with a $39 million opening weekend at 3,932 locations, handily topping “Captain America: Civil War” and “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.”

The launch for Sony’s animated avian tale performed in line with forecasts as did the third weekend of Disney-Marvel’s “Captain America” with $33.1 million at 4,266 sites for a 54% decline. Universal’s “Neighbors 2” finished in third with a solid $21.8 million at 3,384 screens -- although the sequel was off 55% from the 2014 launch of the original “Neighbors.”

Warner Bros.’ opening of action-comedy “The Nice Guys” reeled in a moderate $11.3 million at 2,865 screens, or about half the “Neighbors 2” number as both battled for the attention of comedy fans.

“Angry Birds,” based on Rovio’s popular video game app, generated an A+ CinemaScore among the core under 25 audience. Josh Greenstein, Sony’s president of worldwide marketing and distribution, pointed to a strong international performance with a $94 million weekend worldwide with 47 first-place finishes.

“Rovio and Sony Imageworks were able to translate video game characters into a globally branded film, which was a major challenge,” he added.

The massive marketing campaign featured tie-ins with more than 100 partners. Greenstein noted that “Angry Birds” should be able to hold well in coming weeks, with no other major competition in the family market until Disney opens “Finding Dory” on June 17.

The film, directed by Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis, is set on an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds - except for Red (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), speedy Chuck (Josh Gad) and Bomb (Danny McBride).

Its worldwide total has hit $150 million with a launch last weekend in most foreign markets.

18 girls killed in fire at school dorm in northern Thailand

BANGKOK — A nighttime fire at a dormitory of a primary school in northern Thailand killed 18 girls, many of whom had been roused by a dorm-mate but went back to sleep, thinking it was a prank, officials and the girl who sounded the alarm said Monday. The victims were between 5 and 12 years old.

Five girls were injured in the Sunday night fire. Many survived by rappelling down from a secondfloor window using sheets tied together to form a rope.

The two-story wooden structure that caught fire housed 38 girls, most of them belonging to the area’s ethnic minorities. Fifteen girls es-

caped without injuries. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Some of the students were still not asleep when the fire broke out and were able to raise the alarm, said Rewat Wassana, manager of the Pithakkaiat Witthaya School, to which the dorm is attached.

The kindergarten and primary school in Wiang Pa Pao district, just outside the city of Chiang Rai, has about 400 day students and boarders. It is about 800 kilometers (500 miles) north of Bangkok.

Rewat said the fire broke out in the dorm’s lower level, which is used for activities. The upper level housed the sleeping quarters. It is one of the two dorms on the 20-acre (8-hectare) school grounds. The other dorm, which is located nearby and is for boys, was untouched, Rewat said.

“We have a teacher who sleeps with the girls in the dorm. She tried to help the students escape,” Rewat told reporters at a news conference broadcast on local television.

Dealing with the swift onslaught of the technology, Cantiasa expected that teachers should be able to make the next generation really smart and able to apply their knowledge in the field. School, continued Cantiasa, poses a medium to change or design the students as expected by this nation.

“Education is a place or an agency or organization to design the students. Besides, it poses a place to design and manage younger generation or our generations to come. Similarly, it is a formal organization preparing our younger generation,” he said.
