Dancers aim to qualify for Argentina’s World Tango Championship

BUENOS AIRES - Salon tango dancers glided onto a dance floor in Buenos Aires on Monday in the hopes of qualifying for the World Tango Festival and Championship held every year in the Argentine capital. “My expectation is to have the experience of being here, of having personal growth in dance,” said Uruguayan tango dancer Maria Poggio, 38. “If everything goes our way and we qualify ... that would be great, but the most important thing is to participate and prepare for this, an expectation to grow,” she said. Andre Magro, 35, who is originally from Brazil, said dancing was about having fun. “There are more than 400 couples dancing, participating and it is very

difficult if you want to go through to the finals because there are people who dance very well, around the world,” Magro said. He said anyone who reached the semifinal would be very happy, but “the result is what least matters because people are here to meet other people, to dance and have fun.” The tango originated in the early 19th century in the working-class port areas of Buenos Aires. Now a ballroom dance popular around the world, couples still can be seen passionately dancing the tango on the streets of

Buenos Aires neighborhoods like San Telmo. Chilean Omar Aguilera, 30, spoke about being transported to another world while dancing. “Well, it’s a championship, so the (skill) level is always very high. You’re always watching championships and you realize the level grows even more every year,” Aguilera said. “During the round we danced in, one could feel the powerful energy of tango, so I get lost in that. I can’t see but you feel it when you’re on the floor dancing in full swing.” The World Tango Festival and Championship opened on August 22 and is scheduled to run until August 31 at Usina del Arte, a cultural center in the neighborhood of La Boca. APPARENTLY many poor people in Bali set aside their earnings to buy cigarette filter. Expenditure on the cigarette is even ranked the second after the expenditure on rice. In other words, there is still indeed a correlation between smoking and poverty even though the poverty rate in Bali has dropped from 5.25 percent to 4.25 percent. “Expenditure of the poor is divided into two, namely the food and non-food commodities. For food commodities, the highest spending is clearly for the rice. Well, the second is on cigarette. This means, it is the expenditure of the poor in a month calculated by the Center for Statistics Agency (BPS), not what has made them poor,” said the Head of Bappeda Bali, I Putu Astawa, when confirmed in Denpasar, Monday (Aug. 22). World’s largest cemetery grows bigger as Shi’ite militias bury their dead

BAGHDAD - The world’s largest cemetery, in Iraq’s Shi’ite holy city of Najaf, is expanding at double its usual rate as the nation’s death rate increased with the war on Islamic State. The Wadi al-Salam cemetery, Arabic for “Peace Valley,” has a special place in the hearts of Shi’ite Muslims as it surrounds the Mausoleum of their first imam, Ali Bin Abi Talib, a cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Mohammad. The pace of daily burials rose

to 150-200 after Islamic State, the ultra-hardline Sunni group overran a third of the country in 2014, said Jihad Abu Saybi, a historian of the cemetery. The rate was 80-120 a day previously, he said. Shi’ite paramilitary often visit Ali’s golden-domed shrine before

heading to the frontlines to battle Islamic State, and request to be laid to rest in Wadi al-Salam should they be killed, as a reward for their sacrifice. As land becomes scarce, the cost of a standard 25 square metre family burial lot has risen to about 5 million Iraqi dinars ($4100) almost double the amount paid for the same lots before violence escalated as IS exerted control over large swathes

of north and western Iraq in 2014. Millions of graves of different shapes lie in the roughly 10 square km (4 square miles) cemetery that attracts burials from Shiites all over the world. By nationality, Iraq’s Iranian neighbours are thought to come second in number people interred near Ali’s golden-domed shrine. Often built with baked bricks and plaster, decorated with Koranic

calligraphy, some graves are above ground tombs, reflecting the wealth of those within. (rtr) News can also be heard in “Bali Image” at Global Radio FM 96.5 from 9.30 until 10.00 am.
