‘12 Years a Slave’ wins big at NAACP Image Awards Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES — “12 Years a Slave” swept the film categories at the NAACP Image Awards with four wins. The historical epic’s prizes at Saturday’s 45th annual ceremony honoring diversity in the arts included outstanding motion picture, directing for Steve McQueen, writing for John Ridley and supporting actress for Lupita Nyong’o. “It’s been a historical year in film for all of us in this room, and I’m so proud to be a part of that history,” Nyong’o said. “It’s such an honor to be recognized for a film that has meant so much to so many people, a film that has inspired discourse long overdue.” Kevin Hart won as entertainer of the year and actor in a comedy series for “Real Husbands of Hollywood,” his BET reality TV lampoon that was also selected as outstanding comedy series. Kerry Washington picked up her

fifth Image Award: outstanding actress in a drama series for her role as crisis management consultant Olivia Pope on ABC’s “Scandal,” which was also honored as outstanding drama series. Other winners at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium ceremony hosted by actor Anthony Anderson included “Steve Harvey” as talk show and David Oyelowo as supporting actor in a motion picture for “Lee Daniels’ The Butler.” “Thank you America for embracing me,” the British

actor said. “I’m one of those guys with the funny accent.” Forest Whitaker won the actor in a motion picture prize for “The Butler.” Whitaker, who founded the Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative, was also honored with the NAACAP Chairman’s Award, which recognizes distinguished public service. Whitaker serves as the chairman of the International Institute for Peace and is a member of the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. “All I’ve tried to do with my life and work is to deeper my connection with humanity, so I’ve lived by the words of an old Nat King Cole song my daddy used to play on his stereo, which is, ‘The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return,’” said Whitaker.

Australian TV star Charlotte Dawson found dead Associated Press Writer

SYDNEY — Australian TV star and former model Charlotte Dawson, who became an anti-bullying activist after she was targeted online, has been found dead at age 47. Famed for TV shows such as “Australia’s Next Top Model,” the New Zealand-born star had a history of depression. She was found dead in her Sydney apartment on Saturday morning. Police said there were no suspicious circumstances, which is how they usually describe suicide. Sydney’s The Sunday Telegraph newspaper reported that she was found hanged. In 2012, she was admitted to a Sydney hospital after a suicide attempt following an ongoing tirade of abuse on Twitter. She had taken prescription tablets with wine and tweeted: “you win” in a suicide note to her cyber tormentors. She later made fighting bullying her personal mission,

waging an anti-bullying media campaign on television and radio and in newspapers and magazines as well as her beloved Twitter. Her efforts and high public profile on the issue were recognized by the National Rugby League, a major Australian football association, which last year made her an anti-bullying ambassador. The NRL’s One-Community campaign is an extension of its zero-tolerance policy toward racial abuse in football. Dawson revealed in her 2012 autobiography “Air Kiss & Tell” that she was frequently visited by the “depression bogeyman.” She had long graced the pages of women’s gossip magazines and scenes in reality TV shows. Her modeling career had taken her to Italy, Britain and Germany during the 1980s. New Zealand Prime Minister John Key tweeted he was “shocked and saddened” by the news of her death.

Foreign education institutions worried to “invade” Bali Bali Post

DENPASAR - Free market competition like the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) 2015 has been in sight. Other than foreign products as well as foreign workers freely coming into Indonesia, including Bali, the foreign educational institutions are also worried to invade Bali and seize the education market on the Island of the Gods. According to an economic and education observer, Viraguna Bagoes Oka, it could become a threat of its own if foreign educational institutions worked on the local

market and in the education process did not provide for the portion of the Balinese local wisdom-based content. “In terms of competence and content, probably the entry of

foreign education institution into Bali does not matter. But on the other hand, local wisdom values will not be accommodated. Everything has orientation in business and free market, so the value of local wisdom will be disrupted,” said Viraguna. On the other hand, the free entry of foreign educational institutions into Bali would kindle a gap between the national educational institution and local wisdom-based education with the profit-based

foreign educational institution. “It’s hazardous. If there is no rule protecting the values of local wisdom, the education in Bali can be misdirected. Students will be encouraged to think in terms of business orientation and total efficiency or total liberal so there will be no values of nationalism and local wisdom characterizing our typicality. Without early anticipation with adequate local rules, the local wisdom will be eroded,” he said. According to Viraguna, in order

to face the competition of free market, Bali should be able to prepare first the local rule. He exemplified how Malaysia was able to protect local knowledge, local economy and local products before it actually received the free market. “Malaysia is first preparing local rules in the field of education and economy. After strengthening local rules, it then accepted the free market. We in Bali should be able to make such a local rule,” he said. Continued on page 6
