Jennifer Hudson to headline Carnival cruise shows Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — Back when she was a nobody, long before she blasted to stardom on “American Idol” and “Dreamgirls,” Jennifer Hudson sang on a cruise ship. And on Wednesday, the singer said she would do it again — this time as the headliner for a new concert series on Carnival Cruise Lines called Carnival Live. “I used to work on a cruise ship, a long time ago,” said Hudson before performing at a Carnival news conference in midtown Manhattan. “That’s what I did before I did ‘American Idol.’”

Her stint aboard a Disney cruise ship was “my test,” she said. “Two days later, I went in and auditioned for ‘American Idol.’” Headlining the Carnival series “is like a full circle,” she added. Hudson is scheduled to perform June 18 on Carnival Ecstasy and June 19 on Carnival Breeze, both in Cozumel, Mexico. Carnival has struggled to restore its image after three ships broke down last year. Images of passengers stranded at sea, ships towed back to port and trip cancellations created a torrent of bad publicity for the company that depressed ticket prices and revenue. Other performers and bands scheduled to perform are Chicago, Daughtry, Foreigner, Gavin DeGraw, Jewel, Kansas, Lady Antebellum, LeAnn Rimes, Martina McBride, Olivia Newton-John, REO Speedwagon, STYX and Trace Adkins. So far 49 shows are confirmed for the year. Styx will kick off the series with an April 7 show on the Fantasy in Nassau. In all, eight ships are participating. Tickets will only be sold to individuals taking the cruise. Hudson sang “One Night Only” and several other songs for about 200 people at the Cutting Room, a Manhattan performance space, where Carnival’s senior vice president of guest operations, Mark Tamis, announced the program.

Celebrating Chinese New Year

Bali predicted to be flooded by Chinese travelers Asian tourists shopping at art market in Bali Island recently. The number of Chinese travelers spending holidays in Indonesia, especially in Bali, during the celebration of Chinese New Year 2565 is predicted to experience a surge. In 2013, approximately 800,000 Chinese travelers visited Indonesia, including Bali.

‘Windfall’ explores the business of climate change Associated Press Writer

Apparently, if you look at climate change the right way, it looks like money instead of disaster — if you’re looking at it from a corporate boardroom, for example, and not, say, coastal Bangladesh. Journalist McKenzie Funk spent six years traveling the world to report “Windfall,” his account of how governments and corporations — many of whom heavily contribute to the problem of global warming but balk at mandates to cut greenhouse gas emissions — are confronting climate change with engineering, money and lawyers. Funk has written a fun book humanizing the problems of climate change, focused on the colorful entrepreneurs who see in an increasingly inhospitable world golden opportunities for

indoor skiing, firefighters employed by insurance companies, Dutch-made seawalls and floating beaches for South Pacific resorts that otherwise might disappear. He finds that, for those who can afford to adapt, things will be fine, probably. Then he investigates what will happen to everyone else — the Bangladeshis stuck on the wrong side of an Indian border fence, the Africans frantically trying to build a wall of trees to keep the Sahara from expanding, the proudly independent island nations told to consider merging since they’re all losing land anyway. Funk doesn’t waste time with climate change skeptics — there’s enough scientific evidence to back up the environmental effects he describes. Instead, he considers a thornier issue: the true cost of adapting to climate change.

DENPASAR - The number of Chinese travelers spending holidays in Indonesia, especially in Bali, during the celebration of Chinese New Year 2565 is predicted to experience a surge. “Based on the experience of previous years, the celebration of Chinese New Year is indeed a significant effect on Chinese arrivals to Bali,” said a member of the Indonesian Tourism Promotion Board (BPPI), Mangku Nyoman Kandia, when asked for his confirmation. He said that his party would make an effort in order the visit of Chinese travelers to Indonesia and Bali could increase as the expectation of the government. The BPPI as the promotion partner of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy should undertake a breakthrough. “Even though Bali has been widely known by Chinese travelers, Indonesia is also still doing a direct promotion to China. This year, we will hold a promotion to cities in China. The cities targeted will be surely the emerging

cities, beyond Beijing and Shanghai,” he said. According to him, the cities of China whose economy was growing posed potential tourist market for Indonesia and Bali. For instance, Shenzhen City should have become the main concern of the government and tourism businesspeople in Bali. “From Shenzhen to Hong Kong only takes an hour by land transport. Then, they can fly to Bali just within 4.5 hours from Hong Kong,” he said. He said the key to increasing the number of Chinese travelers visiting Indonesia lay in the intense cultural and economic diplomacy. Promotion of the new tourist destinations like Singkawang being famous for its festival ahead of the Chinese New Year celebration was also one of the ways to attract Chinese travelers.

As had been known, last year Indonesia renewed the cooperation in tourism sector with China. Renewal of the cooperation was marked by the signing of memorandum of understanding (MoU) for tourism cooperation between the two countries that had been signed since 2000. Renewal of the agreement was assessed necessary pursuant to the rapid development of the two countries. Renewal of the MoU and cooperation arrangement in the tourism sector would also be followed up with concrete action plan including joint promotions, share information, travel facilitation, capacity building as well as tourism investment in both countries. Main Market

Recently, an official of the tourism ministry said China is becoming the main market for Indonesian tourism and is prepared to make a significant contribution to tourist arrivals to Indonesia. Continued on page 6
