Family drama ‘Fences’ gets its big screen moment

LOS ANGELES - Denzel Washington is excited. Not so much because he is an Oscar front-runner for his role in “Fences,” but because bringing the award-winning stage play about blue collar African-Americans to the big screen has been a long-held dream.

“It’s brilliant. It’s like, why would they make ‘Hamlet’ a movie? Why would they make ‘Death of a Salesman” a movie? Because it is some of the greatest writing in the 20th century,” the actor told Reuters.

Pulitzer-Prize-winning “Fences,” which opens in U.S. movie theaters on Dec. 25, is the first play by the late, influential black playwright August Wilson to be

turned into a film.

Washington and Viola Davis reprise their 2010 Tony-winning roles as egotistical garbage worker Troy Maxson and his long-suffering wife Rose in the intense family drama about lost hope, betrayal and race prejudice in 1950s America.

Final evacuations resume in Aleppo as snow hits

AMMAN - Once eastern Aleppo is evacuated, the Syrian government is expected to announce it has complete control over city.The final phase of evacuations from former rebel-held parts of Aleppo is under way, with families braving the sleet and snow to leave the city.

The last hospital patients in east Aleppo have now been moved, as have all residents needing urgent medical care, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Aleppo’s hospitals and doctors were regularly targeted by Syrian government forces as they sought to get rid of opposition fighters this year. Last month, the United Nations said it believed there were no functioning medical facilities left in the city.

Around 25,000 people have been bused out of Aleppo since last week as part of a deal overseen by the Red Cross and brokered by Syrian government backer Russia and rebel supporter Turkey.

Under the deal, all civilians and opposition fighters should be out of the area within two days, according to Russia’s foreign minister Sergey Lavrov. He also told reporters after a meeting with his Iranian and Turkish counterparts that they had agreed fighting terrorism was

more of a priority than removing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Some of Aleppo’s residents have described the evacuations as forced displacement.

Once eastern Aleppo has been evacuated - predicted to happen overnight - the Syrian government is expected to announce that it has complete control over city.

DENPASAR - If given the opportunity, women will be able to improve their quality of life. It has been proved in various dimensions of national life, where women are able to become a driving force and the agent of change. This was conveyed by Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, on the 88th celebration of the Mother’s Day in Wiswasabha Building at the office of the governor of Bali on Wednesday (Dec. 21).

“I think the government and all stakeholders currently have started to provide equal opportunities for women to show off their capabilities and their potential,” he said.

Nevertheless, added Pastika, women today are still overshadowed by violence. On that account,

more intensive and comprehensive effort should be taken to suppress the acts of violence against women.

“I think there must be awareness in every family that violence against women and children will greatly affect subsequent family life and community life,” he explained.

Chairman of the Bali House of Representatives, Nyoman Adi Wiryatama, said that this nation has pledged that women are equal to men. Actually, women are not different from men. That is why this equality should be kept together so that in future it can be even better.

“If we give them the opportunity, women will be equal to men.

We see in Indonesia that women are more than men. So, actually women are not different,” he explained. (kmb32)

TABANAN - The government of Tabanan is expected to firmly respond to the increasing presence of modern stores.

Even though there has been a circular of the governor of Bali in 2011 concerning the establishment of modern stores in which the circular carries the temporary suspension or moratorium against any development and licensing of modern market (hypermaket, supermarkets and non-chain and chain minimarkets) until the district / municipal government has spatial plans and regional detailed spatial plan that has legal force.

However, there are still stubborn businesses and open chain modern store business in Tabanan.

Chairman of the Indonesian Market Traders Association (APSI) Bali, I.B. Raka Wiryanata, said on Wednesday (Dec. 21) that the growth of modern stores in Tabanan seems to have gone too far. It is reflected by the increasingly amount.

Moreover, some stores are established at very close distance from the other similar businesses. This condition will close the opportunity for small businesses or stalls selling similar products to compete.

Therefore, Raka expected the government of Tabanan to crack down on them through the rules.

“If the government would like to empower people’s economy, it should be compensated by taking firm action related to the discipline of the modern store. The rules must exist and the government needs to act decisively,” he said.

In the meantime, in a separate place the Regent of Tabanan, Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, revealed the issues on the existence of modern stores in Tabanan is quite complicated. On the one hand, there are modern store operators that are not submitting their permit. On the other hand, there are modern stores

operating by making cooperation with communities with a long period contract. “If dealt firmly, it seems to go up against people. Otherwise, they commit a violation,” he said.

To control the emergence of modern stores and resolve the problem, Eka said the government is making an appropriate rule but may not be contradictive to higher rules.

Currently, the district government is waiting for the ministerial regulation that will be set out next year.

“We continue to monitor the validity of the ministerial regulation so that the regent regulation will not have conflict with the ministerial regulations later,” said Eka. As the district government is still waiting for certainty regarding the contents of the ministerial regulation on the arrangement of modern stores, it has been unable to respond to the emerging modern stores in Tabanan. “If the ministerial regulation obliges to crack down on, it will be carried out and set forth in the regent regulation,” affirmed Eka. Increase security ahead of Christmas and New Year

DENPASAR - Aside from land area, the security in the waters will also be tightened ahead of the Christmas and New Year.

The unit of Denpasar Marine Police increases the frequency of patrols and monitor in the sea areas on the Serangan Island, Denpasar.

Deputy of Denpasar Police chief, Nyoman Artana, accompanied by chief of Denpasar Marine Police, Ketut Suparta, said on Wednesday (Dec. 21) after patrolling the waters that monitoring was carried out by using three ships belonging to Marine Police. The ship departs from the quay of Serangan Island and then combed the island sea.

“The monitoring is intensified ahead of Christmas and the New Year. By and large, we do it two times a day, but now intensified to four times,” he said.

The personnel of marine police oversee the activities of the coastal communities in the region. Beside, before Christmas and the New Year, the number of travelers that enjoy marine tourist activities will also increase. “So, it must be monitored and ensured that they are all safe,” he said.

Patrol in the waters, added Artana, involves 20 personnel. In addition, the effort is meant to anticipate drug trafficking or terrorism. “In appropriate with the authority of marine police, patrols are not just made in the coastal areas, not to reach the middle of the sea. In the sea is the authority of the directorate of Bali Marine Police,” said Artana.

So far, added Artana, the territory of waters in Bali, especially Denpasar, is still safe. He would do everything possible to ensure the safety and security of travelers as well as anticipate all things that can disrupt the security of Bali.

He added that before cracked down on by the government such a business has usually claimed many victims. People with pragmatic

mindset and tempted by the lure of big profits in a short time will certainly become a victim. “Everyone dreams of having a good life, lots of money and vacation. If there are shortcuts they will take them.

Eventually, they will become the victim of the untrue businesses,” he said.

He reminded to choose a business having legitimacy and clear marketing system. To choose a MLM company, people should not get stuck with a business that gives

profit beyond reasonableness with large investments.

MLM companies should also have traded products. “You do not need investment worth tens of millions for doing business in the MLM industry and getting large income. As long as you have consistency and commitment to running the business with a clear working system you can be rich as well,” he added.

Besides, he explained about the trends of MLM business that will

shift from conventional (off-line) to online. It is estimated that in 2020 the online business will dominate the world trade business. Certainly it is not excessive because the existence of internet and smartphone is getting more and more. Hundreds of millions of people have become Internet users through smartphone.

Tree bazaar at Monkey Forest lacks of foreign visitors

GIANYAR - About 100 foreign travelers already expressed their readiness to participate in the tree bazaar at Padang Tegal customary village, Ubud.

Unfortunately, on the day of event on Tuesday (Dec. 20) no one of them was present. Surely this made the customary village disappointed.

Chief of Padang Tegal customary village, Made Gandra, revealed the tree bazaar has been intensely promoted via social media. Many foreign travelers gave positive responses. About 100 travelers said they would participate in the event centered in the eastern region of the Monkey Forest. “However, until the end of the event, none of the travelers came,” he said.

Indeed, there is no obligation or compulsion for travelers to join this event. However, at least the previous commitment must be respected because the program is to increase the awareness of nature. “Maybe they are afraid of having to spend because the concept of the tree bazaar is transactional,” he said.

Furthermore, he hoped the employers and society in Ubud to actively participate in the reforestation program. This movement will have a major impact particularly on creating Ubud into a beautiful area. When having become beautiful, travelers will more comfortable to stay in Ubud.

Regarding the organization of the tree bazaar, Gandra explained that any people wishing to plant trees in the area of Monkey Forest, first of all they must buy a tree at the location specified. The trees will be given a plate on behalf of the buyers.

Through this effort, he hoped the environmental sustainability of monkey forest can be maintained. Eastern region in particular is expected to become a beautiful forest within the next two years. He targeted a thousand trees growing in forest by prioritizing crops that can be used for ritual and healing purposes.

Police arrested two suspects with the initials RN, 25, and GR, 31, on Jalan Sahadewa Gang IV Legian.

DENPASAR- Drug smuggling to Bali before this yearend is quite aggressive in a very large number like the discomfiture of marijuana smuggling by the provincial national narcotics agency (BNNP) Bali, Monday (Dec. 19). The evidence secured included 25 kg of brick package put into two sacks and five grams of marijuana. Police also arrested two suspects with the initials RN, 25, and GR, 31, on Jalan Sahadewa Gang IV Legian.

The Head of the BNNP Bali, Putu Gede Suastawa, told on Tuesday (Dec. 20) that the disclosure of the case was possible due to cooperation of the BNNP Bali with the BNNP North Sumatera.

Initially the eradication team of the BNNP North Sumatra informed there was delivery of marijuana from Kuala Namu Airport (Medan) to Bali. The team led by the division head of the BNNP Bali, Ketut Arta, then followed up the information.

“We made coordination with the courier company in Denpasar. As a result, we could trace the items delivered through freight forwarder located in Sanur. The marijuana was wrapped with Ulos cloth,” he said.

After that, the officers did surveillance to the delivery of the marijuana neatly packed in two sacks heading for the boarding house of the sus-

pect RN. At 11:30, the marijuana packages arrived at the scene and were received by the suspect RN. “When the illicit goods were handed over, our personnel directly arrested the two suspects,” he said.

Furthermore, the officers raided the room of the suspects and secured packages of marijuana weighing five kilograms. When questioned, the suspect admitted that the marijuana was delivered by a dealer with the initials UD in Pematang Siantar, North Sumatra.

“With the reveal of this case, the BNNP Bali managed to save more than 25,000 people from the hazards of drug abuse. Both suspects have been detained in the BNNP Bali detention center,” he said.

Suastawa appealed to residents to be more cautious ahead of this yearend. The drug smuggling to Bali is estimated to increase. In addition, police authority and the government have intensified the raids.

“We will boost the raids in settlement. Our investigation team has been spread in the fields.

Hopefully, the celebration of Christmas and New Year could run securely and favorably,” he hoped. (kmb36)

Trump picks ‘Death by China’ author for trade advisory role

WASHINGTON - U.S. President-elect Donald Trump named Peter Navarro, an economist who has urged a hard line on trade with China, to head a newly formed White House National Trade Council, the transition team said on Wednesday.

Navarro is an academic and one-time investment adviser who has authored a number of popular books and made a film describing China’s threat to the U.S. economy as well as Beijing’s desire to become the dominant economic and military power in Asia.

Trump’s team praised Navarro in a statement as a “visionary” economist who would “develop trade policies that shrink our trade deficit, expand our growth, and help stop the exodus of jobs from our shores.”

Trump, a Republican, made trade a centerpiece of his presidential campaign and railed against what he said were bad deals the United States had made with other countries. He has threatened to hit Mexico and China with high tariffs once he takes office on Jan. 20.

Navarro, 67, is a professor at University of California, Irvine, and advised Trump during the campaign.

His books include “Death by China: How America Lost its Manufacturing Base,” which was made into a documentary film.

As well as describing what he sees as America’s losing economic war with China, Navarro has highlighted concerns over environmental issues related

to Chinese imports and the theft of U.S. intellectual property.

China is paying close attention to Trump’s transition team and the possible direction of policy, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said after being asked about Navarro’s appointment.

“Cooperation is the only correct choice. We hope the U.S. works hard with China to maintain the healthy, stable development of ties, including business and trade ties,” the spokeswoman, Hua Chunying, told a daily press briefing.

While Trump in the statement praised the “clarity” of Navarro’s arguments and the “thoroughness of his research,” few other economists have endorsed Navarro’s ideas.

Japan will also post a natural population decline this year as deaths outpace births, its 10th consecutive drop, according to an estimate by the Health Ministry.

The number of births is estimated at 981,000 this year, down from slightly more than a million last year, data from the ministry showed.

Births hit a record high of 2.696 million in 1949.

A shrinking population of women in their 20s and 30s is a key factor in the falling number, a ministry official said.

Japan’s fertility rate was 1.45 in 2015, up 0.03 points from a year earlier, helped by an economic recovery, and is recovering from the record low of 1.26 hit in 2005.

Philippines’ Duterte wants to give bank governor ‘a whack’, charge staff

MANILA - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte lashed out at the country’s central bank on Thursday, telling its governor “I will give you a whack” and threatening criminal charges against the country’s anti-money laundering body for supporting graft.

Duterte vented his fury during a speech announcing next year’s 3.35 trillion pesos ($67 billion) state budget and accused the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) of failing to support his war on drugs by tracking the flow of drug money.

The maverick former mayor was in the middle of an unusually placid speech ahead of the holiday period, but became angry when he mentioned his crackdown on drugs and said those who should be chasing the money trail were all politicised and tainted.

He took aim at the AMLC, which is chaired by respected Bangko Sentral Governor Amando Tetangco, whom Duterte has been urging to extend his tenure beyond the 12 years he soon will have served.

“I am going to charge all of you there criminally ... and count 1-2-3 and if you don’t resign I will treat

you as drug addicts,” he said of the AMLC. “The reason why you were put there is because you have a job to do. If you cannot know your job get out from that office.”

He added: “You guys there are all corrupt. You better watch out. I will bring you down. Tetangco is about to retire, better prepare there, I will give you a whack.”

Tetangco did not immediately respond to a request for comment and the executive director of the AMLC was not available for comment when Reuters contacted the council.

Deputy central bank governor Diwa Guinigundo said the Bangko Sentral was independent and it would not comment on the president’s remarks. “One thing we know, we are not serving politics,” he told reporters.

More than 6,000 people have been killed since Duterte took of-

fice in July and launched a fierce crackdown on the drugs trade.

Suspected dealers and addicts have suffered the brunt of violence but few inroads have been made towards shutting down the narcotics kingpins.

Police say a third of the deaths were suspected peddlers who resisted arrest and the remainder were deaths still under investigation, some of which were likely victims of vigilantes.

Duterte gave no details on how the state agencies had been uncooperative with the drugs war, or specify the extent of corruption he was accusing them of. He was apparently upset about late submission of an assessment report on money laundering, but did not elaborate.

Duterte’s singling out of Tetangco for criticism was a surprise given his efforts to keep him as governor, despite such a move being against the bank’s regulations.

Tetangco has been credited by economists for his stewardship of an institution at the helm of one of the world’s fastest growing economies.(rtr)

Euro, Italian shares up on Monte Paschi rescue hopes

LONDON - European markets were poised for one last burst of action before the end of the year on Thursday, with Italy expected to outline plans to rescue the world’s oldest and now its most troubled bank, Monte dei Paschi di Siena.

With investors in most major markets already in holiday mode,

stocks and metals drifted lower in thin trading, oil was steady and even the dollar eased off this week’s 14year high.

Shares in Milan climbed 0.3 percent, flanked by the euro on hopes for government bailout for Monte dei Paschi, while European shares followed Asian markets down.

The polygamy area is vacant land measuring approximately 9×21 meters. It is located in the southern of people’s residence. Local residents consider it spiritually impure (leteh). As being impure, any fruits cultivated in the area like

bananas cannot to be taken advantage as a means of ritual oblation, but should only be consumed.

A signboard reading ‘Polygamy Area’ is installed to mark this land and indeed made special by residents. Any residents daring to

violate the rules set forth in the customary bylaw or awig-awig of Penglipuran, they must consequently be willing to be ostracized and occupy the area with their wife. Not only that, they will also be subject to some other social sanctions. They are not allowed to cross the number of certain roads in the village area.

One of them is the main intersection at the village next to the local meeting hall. They are only allowed to exit through the road to the south of the polygamy area.

Cause of deadly Mexico fireworks blasts still unknown

TULTEPEC - Forensic investigators scoured the charred remains of a fireworks market outside Mexico City on Wednesday for clues to what caused a series of massive blasts that killed at least 33 people, the third fiery accident there in 11 years.

Dozens of people were injured in Tuesday’s disaster at the San Pablito open-air market, which was crowded with shoppers just before Christmas.

A smell of burning hung over the remains of the market where investigators dressed in white protective gear, police, and medical personnel searched through twisted metal frames and the wreckage of stalls.

Soldiers with dogs appeared to be looking for human remains.

Alejandro Gomez, the state attorney general, told Mexican television it was unclear what caused the explosions, adding he could not corroborate accounts pointing to a detonation at one stall that may have begun a chain reaction.

Video of the blasts showed a spectacular flurry of pyrotechnics exploding high into the sky, like rockets in a war zone, as a massive plume of charcoal-gray smoke billowed out from the site.

The tragedy could weigh on the

gubernatorial election in the State of Mexico next summer, where the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) aims to hold on to the populous region after a slump in President Enrique Pena Nieto’s popularity.

The federal attorney general’s office opened an investigation, saying that there were six separate blasts.

Alberto Teres, owner of one of few stalls remaining, saw the flames leap from stall to stall. “The only thing you could do was run,” he said.

“It’s a catastrophe,” said Guadalupe Sanchez from nearby Cuautitlan Izcalli, as she searched on Wednesday morning for her uncle, 52, who owned a market stall, and two nephews, aged 15 and 9.

It was the third time in just over a decade that explosions have struck the popular marketplace in Tultepec, home to the country’s best-known fireworks shopping and about 20 miles (32 km) north

of Mexico City in the State of Mexico.

In late 2005, explosions struck the market days before Independence Day celebrations, injuring scores of people. Another explosion gutted the area again almost a year later.

A sign reading “Tultepec, Firework Capital” stood at one of the exits to the market. It was particularly full on Tuesday as many Mexicans buy fireworks to celebrate Christmas and the New Year.

Burned out cars with the paint peeled off and windows punched out by the force of the blasts ringed the site.

“Everything was destroyed, it was very ugly and many bodies were thrown all over the place, including a lot of children. It’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” said housewife Angelica Avila, 24, tears running down her face.

Avila spoke outside a nearby hospital on Tuesday night as she waited for an update on the health of her brother, a fireworks salesman, who she said was burned and also suffered a heart attack. (rtr)

Indonesia denounces truck attack in Berlin

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government has strongly denounced the deadly truck attack on a crowd at a Berlin Christmas market on Monday, which killed 12 people and wounded 48 others.

“The Indonesian government offers deep condolences and sympathy to the relatives of victims and hopes the injured will recover soon,” the Foreign Ministry said in a press statement released on Wednesday. The ministry said it had received no reports of any Indonesians among the victims.

Yet, the Indonesian Embassy in Berlin continues to coordinate with the German authorities in the wake of the truck attack.

The Indonesian government reiterated its call for Indonesians living abroad to stay alert for any similar

incidents, avoid crowds that may become a target of terror attack, and comply with local rules.

The statement said the Indonesians living in and around Berlin and their families in Indonesia can contact the embassy through hotline +49 152575 26930 or the Directorate of Indonesian Citizens and Legal Entities Protection at the Foreign Ministry through +62 8129007 0027 for further information on the attack.

On Tuesday morning, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack and expressed hope that “anybody involved in this criminal act will soon be brought to justice.”

U.S.-supplied drones disappoint Ukraine at the front lines WASHINGTON - Millions of dollars’ worth of U.S.-supplied drones that Kiev had hoped would help in its war against Russian-backed separatists have proven ineffective against jamming and hacking, Ukrainian officials say.

The 72 Raven RQ-11B Analog mini-drones were so disappointing following their arrival this summer that Natan Chazin, an advisor to Ukraine’s military with deep knowledge of the country’s drone program, said if it were up to him, he would return them. “From the beginning, it was the wrong decision to use these drones in our (conflict),” Chazin, an advisor to the chief of the general staff of Ukraine’s armed forces, told Reuters.

The hand-launched Ravens were one of the recent highlights of U.S. security assistance to Ukraine, aiming to give Kiev’s military portable, lightweight, unarmed surveillance drones that were small enough to be used widely in the field. They are made by AeroVironment.

But they appear to have fallen short in a battle against the separatists, who benefit from far more sophisticated military technology than insurgencies the West has contended with in Afghanistan, Iraq or Syria.

Whether President-elect Donald Trump’s administration might seek to provide Kiev anything more robust,

however, is unclear, given his stated desire to improve ties with Russia and prioritize the fight against Islamic militants. U.S. restrictions on technology exports could also limit new aid.

The Air Force command of Ukraine’s armed forces acknowledged to Reuters that the Ravens supplied by the United States had a fundamental drawback: Russia and the separatist forces it supports can intercept and jam their video feeds and data.

“The complex is analog, therefore command channels and data are not protected from interception and suppression by modern means of electronic warfare,” it said.

U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, acknowledged that Russia’s electronic warfare capabilities were far more sophisticated than thought when the conflict began and that both the U.S. and Ukrainian militaries were adapting.

Asked about Ukraine’s reaction to the Ravens, one official said it took a considerable amount of time for the drones to reach Ukraine and that by then “they were much less effective than they would have liked, than we would have liked.”

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) praised the swift action of the antiterror special detachment (Densus) 88 and other police officers involved in preventing a bomb attack by alleged terrorists in Tangerang Selatan, Banten Province, on Wednesday.

The antiterror police squad arrested one suspected terrorist and killed three others in the district in Banten Province, located in the vicinity of capital city Jakarta. National Police Public Information Bureau Chief Brigadier General Rikwanto at the police headquarters said the suspected terrorist who had been arrested was identified as Adam.

The antiterror police squad attempted to arrest three of Adams friends at Curug Village in South Tangerang, but they resisted and were shot dead in the ensuing struggle. The deceased suspects were identified as Omen, Helmi, and Irwan.

“Omen, Helmi, and Irwan were ordered to surrender, but they responded by throwing a bomb at the antiterror police squad, who then shot them dead,” Rikwanto explained.

During the initial interrogation, Adam admitted that they had planned a suicide bomb attack at a police station near the BSD Eka Hospital in South Tangerang.

TANGGERANG - The police have found a backpack loaded with equipment typically used to assemble bombs in a rented house in South Tangerang, Banten, after three suspected terrorists were shot dead in a raid here, Wednesday.

Record A$50 mln prize purse for 2017 Australian Open

MELBOURNE - The Australian Open has increased its total prize purse by 14 percent to a record A$50 million ($36.19 million), with A$3.7 million up for grabs for the winners of the singles tournaments, organisers said on Wednesday.

The prize money for the season’s opening grand slam has more than tripled since 2001, and risen A$10 million since 2014.

Tournament director Craig Tiley said in a statement that organisers were focused on increasing compensation for players in the early rounds and qualifying, with first round losers set for an A$50,000 windfall, up 30 percent

from last year.

Similarly, second round prize money has risen 29 percent to A$80,000, with third and fourth round losers to earn A$130,000 and $220,000 respectively. Total prize money for the quarter-finals, semi-finals, runners up and winner is up 9 percent.

NEW ORLEANS - Russell Westbrook scored a team-high 42 points, including 11 consecutive in the final five minutes, and reserve guard Alex Abrines scored 18 points to lift the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 121-110 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday at the Smoothie King Center.

Westbrook, the NBA’s leading scorer, added 10 rebounds and seven assists and fell short of his 51 triple-double of the season.

The Thunder (17-12), who had lost three of four games coming in, also got 14 points and 14 rebounds from center Enes Kanter.

The Pelicans (10-21) were led

by Anthony Davis, who scored 34 points and had 15 rebounds, and

by Jrue Holiday with a season-high

23 points. Tyreke Evans cut the Oklahoma City lead to 89-87 with a 3-pointer from the right wing, but the Thunder then went on an 11-0 spurt, fueled by reserve guard Alex Abrines’ nine points that included two 3-pointers.

Abrines added another longrange jumper and Oklahoma City led 105-89 with 8:04 left. Abrines finished 5 of 10 from long range.

The Pelicans opened the third quarter with a small lineup and got three consecutive layups by Davis, Holiday and Terrence Jones to take a 64-63 lead. But Westbrook scored 12 points in the quarter as Oklahoma City took an 87-84 lead into the fourth quarter.

Westbrook drew a blocking foul on Davis with 4:58 left in the quarter -- Davis’ fourth foul -- and

that opened up the middle for the Thunder.

Westbrook finished the first half with force, scoring Oklahoma City’s final eight points in the last 1:20 of the second quarter to give the Thunder a 63-58 lead. Westbrook finished the first half with 19 points, five rebounds and three assists. Davis kept the Pelicans in the game, scoring 17 points and grabbing six rebounds in the first half. But Davis had to sit after picking up his third foul on Westbrook’s drive to the basket with 3:11 left in the half.

The Pelicans made 15 of 16 free throws in the first half to somewhat offset Oklahoma City’s 28-18 advantage in the paint. Holiday added 14 first-half points for New Orleans. (rtr)

Sp rt Bayern still bossing Bundesliga but wary of new challengers

BERLIN — Few imagined at the start of the season that a fifth-tier club upon its foundation in 2009 would prove Bayern Munich’s biggest obstacle to an unprecedented fifth straight Bundesliga title.

But Leipzig has got the rest of the league sitting up and taking notice, even if it failed its biggest test Wednesday by losing 3-0 in Munich.

“A lesson,” Leipzig coach Ralph Hasenhuettl called it, as a sense of normality returned to the top of the league.

Elsewhere, however, the big clubs are struggling, with Leipzig trailed by a host of unlikely candidates as sheer graft and untiring teamwork prove their worth over underperforming stars.

Modest Freiburg, which won the second division ahead of Leipzig last season, is enjoying its best season since 2012-13 despite a net investment of just 5 million euros ($5.2 million) on transfers following promotion. Coaches have been paying the price for their sides’ ineptitude.

Borussia Moenchengladbach’s Andre Schubert became the seventh Bundesliga coach to lose his position this season on Wednesday, and it’s unlikely he’ll be the last

with counterparts at Wolfsburg and Bayer Leverkusen facing uneasy Christmases.

One man who’ll enjoy the festivities is Bayern president Uli Hoeness, back in charge after serving half of his 42-month prison term for tax evasion.

More than 97 percent of 7,152 club members voted for the 64year-old Hoeness to take his old position in November and the club bounced back from two straight defeats the next day. Bayern has won each of its six games since his return. It seems only Leipzig can stop Bayern from claiming yet another title with the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Moenchengladbach, Wolfsburg and Schalke all faltering.

Carlo Ancelotti made the best start by any Bayern coach, winning seven competitive games straight before Atletico Madrid ended his run in the Champions League.

That’s where his tenure will be judged after predecessor Pep Guardiola failed to capture Europe’s

biggest prize in three seasons at the Bavarian club.

Ancelotti has had to listen to some criticism as Bayern no longer looked as dominant as in previous seasons, but the Italian is experienced enough to have heard it all before.

Leipzig’s original aim for the season was stability in the top flight, but now Europa League or even Champions League football is a real possibility. The title is probably just one dream too many for Hasenhuettl’s side.

Leipzig’s push at the top of the table would not be possible without the contribution of Naby Keita.

The combative Guinea international, who arrived from sister club RB Salzburg in the summer, has been producing standout performances from the outset, pulling the strings in Leipzig’s midfield, acting as a pivot between defense and attack, and chipping in four goals as well as setting up two more.

Keita was laboring with a strain before the Bayern game and uncharacteristically caught in possession for one of the goals. Clearly not fully fit, he was taken off at half time as Leipzig slumped to only its second defeat in his absence. (ap)

Sakho out for 6-8 weeks, to miss African Cup

LONDON — West Ham manager Slaven Bilic says Senegal striker Diafra Sakho will not be fit for the African Cup of Nations because of a back injury that will rule

him out for six to eight weeks.

The tournament runs from Jan. 14-Feb. 5 in Gabon. Bilic said Thursday: “we are talking about even March to be back, so he’s

definitely ruled out of the African Nations Cup.” Sakho has only played two games this season, scoring one goal. It is the latest injury blow to

PARIS — Striker Edinson Cavani scored his 18th league goal of the season as Paris Saint-Germain trounced woeful Lorient 5-0 on Wednesday to take some pressure off coach Unai Emery heading into the winter break.

Third-place PSG is three points behind Monaco, which beat Caen 2-1 at home, and five behind league leader Nice, which drew 0-0 away to Bordeaux.

The spotlight was firmly on Emery after last weekend’s 2-1 defeat away to Guingamp —

PSG’s fourth loss in the league so far — but Lorient’s abysmal defending made it too easy.

After a quiet opening spell, right back Thomas Meunier put PSG ahead in the 25th minute with an audacious piece of skill, clipping the ball over the head of a Guingamp defender and floating a shot into the opposite corner.

Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is hoping his team can stifle a resurgent Manchester United in the Premier League on Monday and help him keep backto-back clean sheets for the first time this season.

Sunderland lifted themselves off the bottom of the table and into 18th place by beating Watford 1-0 at home on Saturday and Pickford said they would have to play without fear at United to have any hope of climbing out of the relegation zone.

United, who are unbeaten in their last eight league games, are sixth in the table, and have not lost at home since their 2-1 defeat by Manchester City on Sept. 10.

“We are going up against some top, top players,” Pickford told the club website. (www.safc.com).

“We have got to go there and show we don’t fear them.

“We have to stick to our game plan, keep a clean sheet and then...

anything can happen. We’ll have a good week of training, we’ll go there with a game plan and hopefully that works out for us on the day.”

Sunderland’s clean sheet against Watford was their second in the league this season and with goals hard to come by at the other end, Pickford said the defence needed to tighten up further.

Sunderland have scored 15 goals in 17 league games, with only basement side Hull City scoring fewer.

For the fourth goal, a gaping hole was left as Cavani ran onto a through ball and then appeared to go down before any contact from Delecroix. The penalty was awarded, and Cavani sent Delecroix the wrong way for his 24th goal in all competitions.

Brazilian winger Lucas expertly controlled Marco Verratti’s long ball and coolly lobbed Delecroix to make it 5-0 with 20 minutes left.

Still, given how bad last-place Lorient was, there is little reason to suggest Emery has turned the corner.

Record A$50 mln prize purse for 2017 Australian Open

MELBOURNE - The Australian Open has increased its total prize purse by 14 percent to a record A$50 million ($36.19 million), with A$3.7 million up for grabs for the winners of the singles tournaments, organisers said on Wednesday.

The prize money for the season’s opening grand slam has more than tripled since 2001, and risen A$10 million since 2014.

Tournament director Craig Tiley said in a statement that organisers were focused on increasing compensation for players in the early rounds and qualifying, with first round losers set for an A$50,000 windfall, up 30 percent

from last year.

Similarly, second round prize money has risen 29 percent to A$80,000, with third and fourth round losers to earn A$130,000 and $220,000 respectively. Total prize money for the quarter-finals, semi-finals, runners up and winner is up 9 percent.

Cause of deadly Mexico fireworks blasts still unknown

TULTEPEC - Forensic investigators scoured the charred remains of a fireworks market outside Mexico City on Wednesday for clues to what caused a series of massive blasts that killed at least 33 people, the third fiery accident there in 11 years.

Dozens of people were injured in Tuesday’s disaster at the San Pablito open-air market, which was crowded with shoppers just before Christmas.

A smell of burning hung over the remains of the market where investigators dressed in white protective gear, police, and medical personnel searched through twisted metal frames and the wreckage of stalls.

Soldiers with dogs appeared to be looking for human remains.

Alejandro Gomez, the state attorney general, told Mexican television it was unclear what caused the explosions, adding he could not corroborate accounts pointing to a detonation at one stall that may have begun a chain reaction.

Video of the blasts showed a spectacular flurry of pyrotechnics exploding high into the sky, like rockets in a war zone, as a massive plume of charcoal-gray smoke billowed out from the site.

The tragedy could weigh on the

gubernatorial election in the State of Mexico next summer, where the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) aims to hold on to the populous region after a slump in President Enrique Pena Nieto’s popularity.

The federal attorney general’s office opened an investigation, saying that there were six separate blasts.

Alberto Teres, owner of one of few stalls remaining, saw the flames leap from stall to stall. “The only thing you could do was run,” he said.

It was the third time in just over a decade that explosions have struck the popular marketplace in Tultepec, home to the country’s best-known fireworks shopping and about 20 miles (32 km) north

of Mexico City in the State of Mexico.

In late 2005, explosions struck the market days before Independence Day celebrations, injuring scores of people. Another explosion gutted the area again almost a year later.

A sign reading “Tultepec, Firework Capital” stood at one of the exits to the market. It was particularly full on Tuesday as many Mexicans buy fireworks to celebrate Christmas and the New Year.

Burned out cars with the paint peeled off and windows punched out by the force of the blasts ringed the site.

“Everything was destroyed, it was very ugly and many bodies were thrown all over the place, including a lot of children. It’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” said housewife Angelica Avila, 24, tears running down her face.

Avila spoke outside a nearby hospital on Tuesday night as she waited for an update on the health of her brother, a fireworks salesman, who she said was burned and also suffered a heart attack. (rtr)

Indonesia denounces truck attack in Berlin

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government has strongly denounced the deadly truck attack on a crowd at a Berlin Christmas market on Monday, which killed 12 people and wounded 48 others.

“The Indonesian government offers deep condolences and sympathy to the relatives of victims and hopes the injured will recover soon,” the Foreign Ministry said in a press statement released on Wednesday. The ministry said it had received no reports of any Indonesians among the victims.

Yet, the Indonesian Embassy in Berlin continues to coordinate with the German authorities in the wake of the truck attack.

The Indonesian government reiterated its call for Indonesians living abroad to stay alert for any similar

incidents, avoid crowds that may become a target of terror attack, and comply with local rules.

The statement said the Indonesians living in and around Berlin and their families in Indonesia can contact the embassy through hotline +49 152575 26930 or the Directorate of Indonesian Citizens and Legal Entities Protection at the Foreign Ministry through +62 8129007 0027 for further information on the attack.

On Tuesday morning, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack and expressed hope that “anybody involved in this criminal act will soon be brought to justice.”

U.S.-supplied drones disappoint Ukraine at the front lines WASHINGTON - Millions of dollars’ worth of U.S.-supplied drones that Kiev had hoped would help in its war against Russian-backed separatists have proven ineffective against jamming and hacking, Ukrainian officials say.

The 72 Raven RQ-11B Analog mini-drones were so disappointing following their arrival this summer that Natan Chazin, an advisor to Ukraine’s military with deep knowledge of the country’s drone program, said if it were up to him, he would return them. “From the beginning, it was the wrong decision to use these drones in our (conflict),” Chazin, an advisor to the chief of the general staff of Ukraine’s armed forces, told Reuters.

The hand-launched Ravens were one of the recent highlights of U.S. security assistance to Ukraine, aiming to give Kiev’s military portable, lightweight, unarmed surveillance drones that were small enough to be used widely in the field. They are made by AeroVironment.

But they appear to have fallen short in a battle against the separatists, who benefit from far more sophisticated military technology than insurgencies the West has contended with in Afghanistan, Iraq or Syria.

Whether President-elect Donald Trump’s administration might seek to provide Kiev anything more robust,

however, is unclear, given his stated desire to improve ties with Russia and prioritize the fight against Islamic militants. U.S. restrictions on technology exports could also limit new aid.

The Air Force command of Ukraine’s armed forces acknowledged to Reuters that the Ravens supplied by the United States had a fundamental drawback: Russia and the separatist forces it supports can intercept and jam their video feeds and data.

“The complex is analog, therefore command channels and data are not protected from interception and suppression by modern means of electronic warfare,” it said.

U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, acknowledged that Russia’s electronic warfare capabilities were far more sophisticated than thought when the conflict began and that both the U.S. and Ukrainian militaries were adapting.

Asked about Ukraine’s reaction to the Ravens, one official said it took a considerable amount of time for the drones to reach Ukraine and that by then “they were much less effective than they would have liked, than we would have liked.”

AeroVironment referred questions from Reuters about the Raven contract to the U.S. Army.

President Jokowi praises police`s swift action over bomb threats

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) praised the swift action of the antiterror special detachment (Densus) 88 and other police officers involved in preventing a bomb attack by alleged terrorists in Tangerang Selatan, Banten Province, on Wednesday.

The antiterror police squad arrested one suspected terrorist and killed three others in the district in Banten Province, located in the vicinity of capital city Jakarta. National Police Public Information Bureau Chief Brigadier General Rikwanto at the police headquarters said the suspected terrorist who had been arrested was identified as Adam.

The antiterror police squad attempted to arrest three of Adams friends at Curug Village in South Tangerang, but they resisted and were shot dead in the ensuing struggle. The deceased suspects were identified as Omen, Helmi, and Irwan.

“Omen, Helmi, and Irwan were ordered to surrender, but they responded by throwing a bomb at the antiterror police squad, who then shot them dead,” Rikwanto explained.

During the initial interrogation, Adam admitted that they had planned a suicide bomb attack at a police station near the BSD Eka Hospital in South Tangerang.

Philippines’ Duterte wants to give bank governor ‘a whack’, charge staff

MANILA - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte lashed out at the country’s central bank on Thursday, telling its governor “I will give you a whack” and threatening criminal charges against the country’s anti-money laundering body for supporting graft.

Duterte vented his fury during a speech announcing next year’s 3.35 trillion pesos ($67 billion) state budget and accused the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) of failing to support his war on drugs by tracking the flow of drug money.

The maverick former mayor was in the middle of an unusually placid speech ahead of the holiday period, but became angry when he mentioned his crackdown on drugs and said those who should be chasing the money trail were all politicised and tainted.

He took aim at the AMLC, which is chaired by respected Bangko Sentral Governor Amando Tetangco, whom Duterte has been urging to extend his tenure beyond the 12 years he soon will have served.

“I am going to charge all of you there criminally ... and count 1-2-3 and if you don’t resign I will treat

you as drug addicts,” he said of the AMLC. “The reason why you were put there is because you have a job to do. If you cannot know your job get out from that office.”

He added: “You guys there are all corrupt. You better watch out. I will bring you down. Tetangco is about to retire, better prepare there, I will give you a whack.”

Tetangco did not immediately respond to a request for comment and the executive director of the AMLC was not available for comment when Reuters contacted the council.

Deputy central bank governor Diwa Guinigundo said the Bangko Sentral was independent and it would not comment on the president’s remarks. “One thing we know, we are not serving politics,” he told reporters.

More than 6,000 people have been killed since Duterte took of-

fice in July and launched a fierce crackdown on the drugs trade.

Suspected dealers and addicts have suffered the brunt of violence but few inroads have been made towards shutting down the narcotics kingpins.

Police say a third of the deaths were suspected peddlers who resisted arrest and the remainder were deaths still under investigation, some of which were likely victims of vigilantes.

Duterte gave no details on how the state agencies had been uncooperative with the drugs war, or specify the extent of corruption he was accusing them of. He was apparently upset about late submission of an assessment report on money laundering, but did not elaborate.

Duterte’s singling out of Tetangco for criticism was a surprise given his efforts to keep him as governor, despite such a move being against the bank’s regulations.

Tetangco has been credited by economists for his stewardship of an institution at the helm of one of the world’s fastest growing economies.(rtr)

LONDON - European markets were poised for one last burst of action before the end of the year on Thursday, with Italy expected to outline plans to rescue the world’s oldest and now its most troubled bank, Monte dei Paschi di Siena.

With investors in most major markets already in holiday mode,

stocks and metals drifted lower in thin trading, oil was steady and even the dollar eased off this week’s 14year high.

Shares in Milan climbed 0.3 percent, flanked by the euro on hopes for government bailout for Monte dei Paschi, while European shares followed Asian markets down.

How unique it is. Penglipuran village in Bangli district can be said as the only anti-polygamy village in Bali. The men at the local village are strictly forbidden from having more than one wife. If they insist on taking polygamy, they must be willing to be ostracized in a vacant land located in the south of local village, known as karang memadu or polygamy area.

The polygamy area is vacant land measuring approximately 9×21 meters. It is located in the southern of people’s residence. Local residents consider it spiritually impure (leteh). As being impure, any fruits cultivated in the area like

bananas cannot to be taken advantage as a means of ritual oblation, but should only be consumed.

A signboard reading ‘Polygamy Area’ is installed to mark this land and indeed made special by residents. Any residents daring to

violate the rules set forth in the customary bylaw or awig-awig of Penglipuran, they must consequently be willing to be ostracized and occupy the area with their wife. Not only that, they will also be subject to some other social sanctions. They are not allowed to cross the number of certain roads in the village area.

One of them is the main intersection at the village next to the local meeting hall. They are only allowed to exit through the road to the south of the polygamy area.

Tree bazaar at Monkey Forest lacks of foreign visitors

GIANYAR - About 100 foreign travelers already expressed their readiness to participate in the tree bazaar at Padang Tegal customary village, Ubud.

Unfortunately, on the day of event on Tuesday (Dec. 20) no one of them was present. Surely this made the customary village disappointed.

Chief of Padang Tegal customary village, Made Gandra, revealed the tree bazaar has been intensely promoted via social media. Many foreign travelers gave positive responses. About 100 travelers said they would participate in the event centered in the eastern region of the Monkey Forest. “However, until the end of the event, none of the travelers came,” he said.

Indeed, there is no obligation or compulsion for travelers to join this event. DENPASAR- Drug smuggling to Bali before this yearend is quite aggressive in a very large number like the discomfiture of marijuana smuggling by the provincial national narcotics agency (BNNP) Bali, Monday (Dec. 19). The evidence secured included 25 kg of brick package put into two sacks and five grams of marijuana. Police also arrested two suspects with the initials RN, 25, and GR, 31, on Jalan Sahadewa Gang IV Legian.

The Head of the BNNP Bali, Putu Gede Suastawa, told on Tuesday (Dec. 20) that the disclosure of the case was possible due to cooperation of the BNNP Bali with the BNNP North Sumatera.

Initially the eradication team of the BNNP North Sumatra informed there was delivery of marijuana from Kuala Namu Airport (Medan) to Bali. The team led by the division head of the BNNP Bali, Ketut Arta, then followed up the information.

“We made coordination with the courier company in Denpasar. As a result, we could trace the items delivered through freight forwarder located in Sanur. The marijuana was wrapped with Ulos cloth,” he said.

After that, the officers did surveillance to the delivery of the marijuana neatly packed in two sacks heading for the boarding house of the sus-

pect RN. At 11:30, the marijuana packages arrived at the scene and were received by the suspect RN. “When the illicit goods were handed over, our personnel directly arrested the two suspects,” he said.

Furthermore, the officers raided the room of the suspects and secured packages of marijuana weighing five kilograms. When questioned, the suspect admitted that the marijuana was delivered by a dealer with the initials UD in Pematang Siantar, North Sumatra.

“With the reveal of this case, the BNNP Bali managed to save more than 25,000 people from the hazards of drug abuse. Both suspects have been detained in the BNNP Bali detention center,” he said.

Suastawa appealed to residents to be more cautious ahead of this yearend. The drug smuggling to Bali is estimated to increase. In addition, police authority and the government have intensified the raids.

“We will boost the raids in settlement. Our investigation team has been spread in the fields.

Trump picks ‘Death by China’ author for trade advisory role

WASHINGTON - U.S. President-elect Donald Trump named Peter Navarro, an economist who has urged a hard line on trade with China, to head a newly formed White House National Trade Council, the transition team said on Wednesday.

Navarro is an academic and one-time investment adviser who has authored a number of popular books and made a film describing China’s threat to the U.S. economy as well as Beijing’s desire to become the dominant economic and military power in Asia.

Trump’s team praised Navarro in a statement as a “visionary” economist who would “develop trade policies that shrink our trade deficit, expand our growth, and help stop the exodus of jobs from our shores.”

Trump, a Republican, made trade a centerpiece of his presidential campaign and railed against what he said were bad deals the United States had made with other countries. He has threatened to hit Mexico and China with high tariffs once he takes office on Jan. 20.

Navarro, 67, is a professor at University of California, Irvine, and advised Trump during the campaign.

His books include “Death by China: How America Lost its Manufacturing Base,” which was made into a documentary film.

As well as describing what he sees as America’s losing economic war with China, Navarro has highlighted concerns over environmental issues related

to Chinese imports and the theft of U.S. intellectual property.

China is paying close attention to Trump’s transition team and the possible direction of policy, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said after being asked about Navarro’s appointment.

“Cooperation is the only correct choice. We hope the U.S. works hard with China to maintain the healthy, stable development of ties, including business and trade ties,” the spokeswoman, Hua Chunying, told a daily press briefing.

While Trump in the statement praised the “clarity” of Navarro’s arguments and the “thoroughness of his research,” few other economists have endorsed Navarro’s ideas.

Japan will also post a natural population decline this year as deaths outpace births, its 10th consecutive drop, according to an estimate by the Health Ministry.

The number of births is estimated at 981,000 this year, down from slightly more than a million last year, data from the ministry showed.

Increase security ahead of Christmas and New Year

DENPASAR - Aside from land area, the security in the waters will also be tightened ahead of the Christmas and New Year.

The unit of Denpasar Marine Police increases the frequency of patrols and monitor in the sea areas on the Serangan Island, Denpasar.

Deputy of Denpasar Police chief, Nyoman Artana, accompanied by chief of Denpasar Marine Police, Ketut Suparta, said on Wednesday (Dec. 21) after patrolling the waters that monitoring was carried out by using three ships belonging to Marine Police. The ship departs from the quay of Serangan Island and then combed the island sea.

“The monitoring is intensified ahead of Christmas and the New Year. By and large, we do it two times a day, but now intensified to four times,” he said.

The personnel of marine police oversee the activities of the coastal communities in the region. Beside, before Christmas and the New Year, the number of travelers that enjoy marine tourist activities will also increase. “So, it must be monitored and ensured that they are all safe,” he said.

Patrol in the waters, added Artana, involves 20 personnel. In addition, the effort is meant to anticipate drug trafficking or terrorism. “In appropriate with the authority of marine police, patrols are not just made in the coastal areas, not to reach the middle of the sea. In the sea is the authority of the directorate of Bali Marine Police,” said Artana.

So far, added Artana, the territory of waters in Bali, especially Denpasar, is still safe. He would do everything possible to ensure the safety and security of travelers as well as anticipate all things that can disrupt the security of Bali.

He added that before cracked down on by the government such a business has usually claimed many victims. People with pragmatic

mindset and tempted by the lure of big profits in a short time will certainly become a victim. “Everyone dreams of having a good life, lots of money and vacation. If there are shortcuts they will take them.

Eventually, they will become the victim of the untrue businesses,” he said.

He reminded to choose a business having legitimacy and clear marketing system. To choose a MLM company, people should not get stuck with a business that gives

profit beyond reasonableness with large investments.

MLM companies should also have traded products. “You do not need investment worth tens of millions for doing business in the MLM industry and getting large income. As long as you have consistency and commitment to running the business with a clear working system you can be rich as well,” he added.

Besides, he explained about the trends of MLM business that will

shift from conventional (off-line) to online. It is estimated that in 2020 the online business will dominate the world trade business. Certainly it is not excessive because the existence of internet and smartphone is getting more and more. Hundreds of millions of people have become Internet users through smartphone.

It has been proved in various dimensions of national life, where women are able to become a driving force and the agent of change. This was conveyed by Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, on the 88th celebration of the Mother’s Day in Wiswasabha Building at the office of the governor of Bali on Wednesday (Dec. 21).

“I think the government and all stakeholders currently have started to provide equal opportunities for women to show off their capabilities and their potential,” he said.

Nevertheless, added Pastika, women today are still overshadowed by violence. On that account,

more intensive and comprehensive effort should be taken to suppress the acts of violence against women.

“I think there must be awareness in every family that violence against women and children will greatly affect subsequent family life and community life,” he explained.

Chairman of the Bali House of Representatives, Nyoman Adi Wiryatama, said that this nation has pledged that women are equal to men. Actually, women are not different from men. That is why this equality should be kept together so that in future it can be even better.

“If we give them the opportunity, women will be equal to men.

Even though there has been a circular of the governor of Bali in 2011 concerning the establishment of modern stores in which the circular carries the temporary suspension or moratorium against any development and licensing of modern market (hypermaket, supermarkets and non-chain and chain minimarkets) until the district / municipal government has spatial plans and regional detailed spatial plan that has legal force.

However, there are still stubborn businesses and open chain modern store business in Tabanan.

Chairman of the Indonesian Market Traders Association (APSI) Bali, I.B. Raka Wiryanata, said on Wednesday (Dec. 21) that the growth of modern stores in Tabanan seems to have gone too far. It is reflected by the increasingly amount.

Moreover, some stores are established at very close distance from the other similar businesses. This condition will close the opportunity for small businesses or stalls selling similar products to compete.

Therefore, Raka expected the government of Tabanan to crack down on them through the rules.

“If the government would like to empower people’s economy, it should be compensated by taking firm action related to the discipline of the modern store. The rules must exist and the government needs to act decisively,” he said.

In the meantime, in a separate place the Regent of Tabanan, Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, revealed the issues on the existence of modern stores in Tabanan is quite complicated. On the one hand, there are modern store operators that are not submitting their permit. On the other hand, there are modern stores

operating by making cooperation with communities with a long period contract. “If dealt firmly, it seems to go up against people. Otherwise, they commit a violation,” he said.

To control the emergence of modern stores and resolve the problem, Eka said the government is making an appropriate rule but may not be contradictive to higher rules.

Currently, the district government is waiting for the ministerial regulation that will be set out next year.

“We continue to monitor the validity of the ministerial regulation so that the regent regulation will not have conflict with the ministerial regulations later,” said Eka. As the district government is still waiting for certainty regarding the contents of the ministerial regulation on the arrangement of modern stores, it has been unable to respond to the emerging modern stores in Tabanan. “If the ministerial regulation obliges to crack down on, it will be carried out and set forth in the regent regulation,” affirmed Eka. Family drama ‘Fences’ gets its big screen moment

LOS ANGELES - Denzel Washington is excited. Not so much because he is an Oscar front-runner for his role in “Fences,” but because bringing the award-winning stage play about blue collar African-Americans to the big screen has been a long-held dream.

Final evacuations resume in Aleppo as snow hits

AMMAN - Once eastern Aleppo is evacuated, the Syrian government is expected to announce it has complete control over city.The final phase of evacuations from former rebel-held parts of Aleppo is under way, with families braving the sleet and snow to leave the city.

The last hospital patients in east Aleppo have now been moved, as have all residents needing urgent medical care, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Aleppo’s hospitals and doctors were regularly targeted by Syrian government forces as they sought to get rid of opposition fighters this year. Last month, the United Nations said it believed there were no functioning medical facilities left in the city.

Around 25,000 people have been bused out of Aleppo since last week as part of a deal overseen by the Red Cross and brokered by Syrian government backer Russia and rebel supporter Turkey.

Under the deal, all civilians and opposition fighters should be out of the area within two days, according to Russia’s foreign minister Sergey Lavrov. He also told reporters after a meeting with his Iranian and Turkish counterparts that they had agreed fighting terrorism was

more of a priority than removing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Some of Aleppo’s residents have described the evacuations as forced displacement.

Once eastern Aleppo has been evacuated - predicted to happen overnight - the Syrian government is expected to announce that it has complete control over city.
