HOLLYWOOD - North American moviegoers really like to be scared, and Universal gleefully accommodated them this weekend as its new release “Halloween” registered an impressive $77.5 million in estimated ticket sales, industry tracker Exhibitor Relations reported Sunday.

That strong three-day number gave the film the second-best opening ever for an October, trailing only “Venom,” which earlier this month booked an $80-million opening, according to HollywoodReporter.com. Universal executives could be excused for a bit of gloating -- they produced “Halloween” for a microscopic $10 million. “Halloween” recounts the return of a homicidal masked figure (Nick Castle) 40 years after he set off on a bloody Halloween night killing spree.

Jamie Lee Curtis again stars as Laurie Strode, sole survivor of that spree. Holding tight in second spot was Warner Bros.’s musical drama “A Star Is Born,” with ticket sales of $19.3 million. The film, the third remake of a 1937 movie, was directed by Bradley Cooper. He plays a hard-drinking musician who falls in love with a young singer (Lady Gaga), only to see her star rise as his plunges. Sony’s “Venom” was not far behind, taking in $18.1

million as it approaches $500 million globally. Tom Hardy stars as a journalist who becomes the superpowerful host for an alien creature. In fourth was another seasonal offering, Sony’s “Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween,” at $9.7 million. The family-friendly sequel, based on the R.L. Stine children’s books, stars Wendi McLendon-Covey and Madison Iseman. Fifth spot went to Universal’s astronaut drama “First Man,” at $8.6 million. The film, directed by Oscar winner Damien Chazelle and starring Ryan Gosling, recounts Neil Armstrong’s historic journey to the moon in 1969. (afp)

Bollywood’s Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh are getting married

NEW DELHI - Bollywood stars Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh have ended months of speculation about their relationship by announcing they are to marry next month. In a joint statement on social media, the actors - two of the Indian film industry’s biggest names - expressed their “immense joy” and asked for the blessings of fans ahead of the wedding, which will take place over two days. “With the blessings of our families, it gives us immense joy in sharing that our wedding is set to take place on the 14th and 15th of November, 2018,” they said. “We thank you for all the love you have showered upon us over the years and seek your blessings as we embark on this incredible journey of love, loyalty, friendship and togetherness.”

Copenhagen-born Padukone, 32, is one of Bollywood’s highest-paid stars and one of a select few to break into Hollywood after she starred in xXx: Return of Xander Cage with Vin Diesel. She has featured in 40 films since 2006. She is also the daughter of Indian badminton player Prakash Padukone - a former world number one. Singh, 33, rose to fame in the 2010 romantic comedy Band Baaja Baaraat and went on to appear in 14 films. He has starred in several films alongside his wife-to-be. They include 2013’s Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, 2014’s Finding Fanny, and 2015’s Bajirao Mastani. They also appeared in the controversial Bollywood epic Padmaavat, which sparked violent protests in northern India earlier this year. (IBP/net)

The murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi has sent a chill through exiled dissidents, with many revealing discreet government attempts to lure them to their embassies as an apparent “trap” to return them to the kingdom. Khashoggi, a critic of powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, in what sources close to the government have said was likely an authorised rendition that went wrong. Saudi exiles in three different countries have recounted what appeared to be official attempts to bait them into the kingdom’s

diplomatic missions, exposing them to potentially the same fate as Khashoggi. Omar Abdulaziz, a 27-year-old Saudi activist exiled in Canada, said he was approached earlier this year by Saudi officials who urged him to visit their embassy with them to collect a new passport. “They were saying ‘it will only take one hour, just come with us to the

embassy’,” Abdulaziz, who rankled authorities with a YouTube show that satirized the Saudi leadership, said in a video posted on Twitter. He refused to go, fearing a trap, and two of his brothers and a handful of his friends were arrested in the kingdom, he said, thus validating his suspicions. The Washington Post said it received hours-long tapes from Abdulaziz of his conversations with those officials, which he secretly recorded. Abdullah Alaoudh, a Saudi scholar at Georgetown, said he was subjected to a similar “plot” in Washington.

Last year, when Alaoudh, son of prominent cleric Salman al-Awda who is jailed and faces trial in the kingdom, applied to renew his passport at the Saudi embassy in Washington, he says he was told to return to the kingdom to complete what appeared to be basic formalities. “They offered me a ‘temporary pass’ that would allow me to return to Saudi Arabia,” Alaoudh told AFP. “I knew it was a trap and just left with my expired passport.” - ‘Cover up’ The testimonies suggest what

appear to be growing Saudi efforts to snare overseas critics of the government or entice them to return since Mohammed bin Salman, widely known as MBS, became crown prince last year. Continued to page 6
