‘Ben-Hur’ Flops With $11.4 Million, ‘Suicide Squad’ Still on Top

LOS ANGELES - “Ben-Hur” derailed spectacularly at the multiplexes this weekend, as the latest attempt to revive the chariot racing epic opened to an anemic $11.4 million. That’s a disastrous result for the $100 million production, putting “Ben-Hur” in the ranks of the summer’s biggest flops.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Paramount co-produced the remake of Lew Wallace’s novel “Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ”; the book was the basis for the 1959 blockbuster that followed Charlton Heston into the arena. “This is the bomb of the summer,” said Jeff Bock, a box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “They went big and they went home.”

Although MGM put up roughly 80% of the budget for the film, its failure will be felt at Paramount. The studio has had a bad streak at the box office of late, fielding duds such as “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” and “Zoolander 2.” That’s not the only source of strife. Its parent company, Viacom, has been engulfed in an epic corporate struggle pitting CEO Philippe Dauman over the Redstone family, the media conglomerate’s controlling stakeholders.

That issue, at least, is moving towards a resolution, as Viacom announced this weekend that Dauman was stepping down from atop thecompany and will be replaced on an interim basis by COO Thomas Dooley.

“Ben-Hur’s” backers aggressively courted the Christian community, doing outreach to pastors and holding tastemaker screenings for religious leaders. The studios also hoped that producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, who earned devout points with “Son of God” and the mini-series “The Bible,” would help them turn out values audiences.

Instead, “Ben-Hur” trailed the $47 million debut of “Noah” and the $24 million launch of “Exodus: Gods and Kings,” two recent Biblical epics that lacked a heavenly touch.

“Ben-Hur” drew a crowd that was 51% female and 94% over the age of 25. It also did well in the South and Southwest, areas that are more religious, but did not do as well in more secular regions of the country such as the Northeast and the West Coast.

The film, it seems, could not expand beyond its core Christian audience. Paramount Vice-Chairman Rob Moore noted that “Ben-Hur” is the latest in a string of remakes and sequels such as “Independence Day: Resurgence” and “Ghostbusters” to have failed to draw crowds. (rtr)

Customary village holds the ritual for 151 bodies BANGLI - Batur customary village in Kintamani held a nyekah or pitri yadnya ceremony. A total of 151 bodies were consecrated in this ceremony whose peak took place on Sunday (Aug. 21).

Chief of the ritual committee, I Gede Sarjana, said that the nyekah ceremony is regularly carried out by Batur customary village every two years. In addition to strengthening social relations of the local residents, the ceremony held en masse is also meant to save costs where in this ceremony each body is charged at IDR 6 million.

More Carnival than clockwork, but Rio pulls it off

RIO DE JANEIRO - In the end, it was a tale of two Games.

The yin and yang Olympics, one of stark contrasts between the feats on the field of play, and regrettable actions off it.

Staged despite a lack of funds, deep recession and social turmoil, Rio de Janeiro unfurled South America’s first Olympic Games hoping against hope that the power of sport would eclipse a seemingly endless list of problems.

Arguably, it did.

Try telling one of the 80,000 Brazilians crammed into the Maracana stadium, who roared deliriously as Neymar won Brazil football gold with a crisp last-kick penalty, that this Olympics was anything but a success.

Or the residents of a notorious Rio slum who watched one of their own win Brazil’s first gold, in the judo arena.

Or try telling any one of the nine athletes who clinched their country’s first Olympic golds, or Team GB who finished second in the medal table with their best performance in more than a century with golds across an unrivalled 15 sports.

Some felt Rio failed to present the five-star experience tourists and visitors had enjoyed at London

2012, but the Games proved the city could deliver a spectacle against the odds.

“Nothing big wrong went wrong, right?” was a verdict repeated time and time again by smiling locals.

A swampy green diving pool and a bullet whizzing into the equestrian centre were of no consequence to most locals.

Rio 2016 had struggled with transportation, security, empty stands and dwindling funds as Brazil was gripped by its worst economic downturn since the 1930s.

For weeks, they suffered blow after blow. They were accused of

cutting corners and the Australians threatened not to move into the athletes’ village unless urgent improvements were made.

Ryan Lochte and the other three U.S. swimmers hijacked media coverage for the second half of the Games by lying about being robbed at gunpoint to cover up for a drunken night.

And then there was the arrest of 71-year-old International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Pat Hickey in a dawn raid, as part of a Brazilian police investigation into ticket touting.

But for the thousands of visitors and locals who embraced the Games, flowing each morning over

an elevated walkway into the Olympic Park, this had been a resounding success.

“Even with all our problems we pulled off a good Olympics. Nothing too bad happened and I’d say it was better than expected,” said Nivea Araujo, a Rio resident attending the closing ceremony. Sarjana described that according to the series of ritual, the nyekah at Batur customary village has been started on July 29 with the nanceb ritual. Then, it was resumed with mecaru / ngeruwak, bhakti pengalang, initiation of the buildings, negtegang, mekarya sanganan, and preparation of bade tower on August 3. Several series of the ceremonies continued to be implemented such as the notification of cremation on August 12, invoking the soul at Dalem Temple, ngeplugin / nundunin, ngening, nyiramang and menek beya on August 20. On Last Sunday denoting the peak of the ritual was carried out some processions like ngening, piuning ngelungah at the outermost courtyard of the Dalem Temple, invoking pengentas holy water, peak of cremation ritual, mecaru and megat tali. “The ceremony today is held at two locations namely at the cemetery of Batur customary village and Tunon parking space of Batur Temple,” he explained.

In the culmination of the nyekah ritual, the means in use consisted of two bade towers and a padma shrine. Both were paraded by thousands of residents coalesced into the supporting hamlets of jero baris, jero batu dauh rurung and jero batu dangin rurung, jero gambel as well as jero roban.

Sarjana added that according to tradition at Batur village in the cremation procession there were no bodies cremated but they have been represented with sawa rishi made from sandalwood tree. “Peak of the nyekah ritual today is officiated over by Ida Pedanda or high priest from Geria Tegallalang, Bangli,” he said.

After implementing the peak of the nyekah ritual on Sunday, a series of other processions will be resumed on Monday (Aug. 22) by holding bhakti penyapuh, meguru piduka and piuning ngeroras.

Then, on the following day will be organized the nunas don bingin, ngajum, nyekah and nganyut.

Several other processions continue to be held until the end on August 28. (kmb40)

Study finds cosmic rays increased heart risks among Apollo astronauts

CAPE CANAVERAL - Apollo astronauts who ventured to the moon are at five times greater risk of dying from heart disease than shuttle astronauts, U.S. researchers said on Thursday, citing the dangers of cosmic radiation beyond the Earth’s magnetic field.

The study by researchers at Florida State University and NASA found that three Apollo astronauts, including Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon, or 43 percent of those studied, died from cardiovascular disease, a finding with implications for future human travel beyond Earth.

The research, published in the journal Scientific Reports, was the first to look at the mortality of Apollo astronauts, the only people so far to travel beyond a few hundred miles (km) of Earth.

It found that the chief health threat to the Apollo astronauts came from cosmic rays, which are more prevalent and powerful beyond the magnetic bubble that surrounds Earth.

NASA disputed the findings, saying it was too early to draw conclusions about the effect of cosmic

rays on Apollo astronauts because the current data is limited.

The results of the study have implications for the United States and other countries, as well as private companies, such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which are planning missions to Mars and other destinations beyond Earth.

For the study, the researchers examined the death records of 42 astronauts who flew in space, including seven Apollo veterans, and 35 astronauts who died without ever going into space.

They found the Apollo astronauts’ mortality rate from cardiovascular disease was as much as five times higher than for astronauts who never flew, or for those who flew low-altitude missions aboard the space shuttle that orbited a few hundred miles above Earth.

David denies having murdered traffic policeman

A companion study simulated weightlessness and radiation exposure in mice and showed that radiation exposure was far more threatening to the cardiovascular system than other factors, lead scientist Michael Delp said in an interview.

“What the mouse data show is that deep space radiation is harmful to vascular health,” he said.

So far, only 24 astronauts have flown beyond Earth’s protective magnetic shield, in missions spanning a four-year period from December 1968 to December 1972.

Of those, eight have died, seven of whom were included in the study. The cause of death of the eighth astronaut, Apollo 14’s Edgar Mitchell, who died in February 2016, has not been released, so he was excluded from the study, Delp said. Mitchell was the sixth person to walk on the moon.

Delp and colleagues are working on a follow-up study that includes more detail on family medical histories, smoking and other factors. (rtr)

HILO — Six scientists are close to wrapping up a year of near isolation in a Mars simulation on a Hawaii mountain.

The scientists are housed in a dome on Mauna Loa and can go outside only in spacesuits, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported (http://bit.ly/2b9NTgt).

They manage limited resources while conducting research and working to avoid personal conflicts.

Communication is delayed the 20 minutes, the length it would take to relay messages from Mars.

Kim Binsted, principal investigator for the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation, said this simulation is the secondlongest of its kind after a mission that lasted 520 days in Russia.

“They’re doing OK as far as we can tell,” Binsted said of the scientists.

Previous simulations in the Mauna Loa dome have lasted four to eight months.

Mauna Loa soil is similar to what would be found on Mars. The area’s high elevation means almost no plant growth.

NASA funded the study run through the University of Hawaii.

The scientists will have access to fresh produce and other foods not available to them in the dome when the simulation ends Aug. 28.

“They are clamoring to get into the ocean,” Binsted said. “I think they will enjoy having a beer as well.”

DENPASAR - The suspect David James Taylor from England and Sarah Connor from Australia could have a break because there was no interrogation on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 21). Previously, they underwent intensive examination related to the murder of the traffic policeman Wayan Sudarsa. The suspect David was even examined until midnight.

“The suspect David is interrogated with 53 questions. David admitted that he did not commit any murder. If this testimony is correct, there is another culprit, whether his girlfriend or anyone else. We entrust to the authorities whether my client already told lies or made up stories, it will be revealed,” said the lawyer of David, Haposan Sihombing.

There is something interesting, said Haposan, from the testimony of his client when coming back to his homestay at Legian, where Sara once told him if the victim pulled her, and he was then pushed down to the sand. “According to David, Connor told if the victim to rest on her body and then cried out for help. Some people came and pulled the policeman so that Sarah Connor could escape,” said the lawyer.

Philippines drug war deaths climb to 1,800, president spars with UN

MANILA - The Philippines has recorded about 1,800 drugrelated killings since President Rodrigo Duterte took office seven weeks ago and launched a war on narcotics, far higher than previously believed, according to police figures.

Philippine National Police Chief Ronald Dela Rosa told a Senate committee on Monday that 712 drug traffickers and users had been killed in police operations since July 1.

Police were also investigating 1,067 other drug-related killings, Dela Rosa said, without giving details. The comments came a day after Duterte lashed out at the United Nations for criticising the wave of deaths.

As recently as Sunday, the number of suspected drug traffickers killed in Duterte’s war on drugs had been put at about 900 by Philippine officials. But this number included people who died since Duterte won the May 9 presidential election.

Duterte said in a bizarre and strongly worded late-night news conference on Sunday the Philip-

pines might leave the United Nations and invite China and others to form a new global forum, accusing it of failing to fulfil its mandate.

However, his foreign minister, Perfecto Yasay, said on Monday the Philippines would remain a U.N. member and described the president’s comments as expressions of “profound disappointment and frustration”.

“We are committed to the U.N. despite our numerous frustrations and disappointments with the international agency,” Yasay told a news conference.

Last week, two U.N. human rights experts urged Manila to stop the extra-judicial executions and killings.

Yasay said Duterte has promised to uphold human rights in the fight against drugs and has ordered the police to investigate and prosecute

offenders. He criticised the U.N. rapporteurs for “jumping to an arbitrary conclusion that we have violated human rights of people”.

“It is highly irresponsible on their part to solely rely on such allegations based on information from unnamed sources without proper substantiation,” he said of the United Nations.

Senator Leila de Lima, a staunch critic of the president, started a twoday congressional inquiry into the killings on Monday, questioning top police and anti-narcotics officials to explain the “unprecedented” rise in killings.

“I am disturbed that we have killings left and right as breakfast every morning,” she said.

“My concern does not only revolve around the growing tally of killings reported by the police.

What is particularly worrisome is that the campaign against drugs seems to be an excuse for some law enforcers and other elements like vigilantes to commit murder with impunity,” De Lima said. (rtr)

BANGKOK - Thai police on Monday said at least 20 people were involved in carrying out a wave of deadly bombings in the country’s south earlier this month.

National police chief Jakthip Chaijinda said that police have not ruled out any motive for the attacks and believe that many of those involved came from Thailand’s Muslim-majority southern provinces.

“We know where they came from, where they went. We believe there are at least 20 people involved in this network,” Jakthip told reporters, without giving further details.

No group has claimed responsibility for the Aug. 11 and Aug. 12 attacks which took place in seven provinces and targeted high profile beach towns, killing four people and injuring dozens.

The bombings came days after Thais voted to accept a militarybacked constitution in a nation-wide referendum.

Police and the government ruled out any link to foreign militants within hours of the attacks and insisted the perpetrators were homegrown.

Jakthip said that he could not confirm whether the bombings were an extension of an insurgency in the southern provinces that border Malaysia, where Malay-Muslim insurgents are fighting a bloody war that has claimed more than 6,500 lives since 2004.

“We are unwilling to say what their motive is and whether it is related to the referendum, the insurgency or whether they were hired,” Jakthip said.

Last week, Thai Defense Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said the bombings were “definitely not an extension” of the insurgency.

Security experts told Reuters that official denial of involvement

by Malay-Muslim insurgents was unsurprising as admitting southern insurgents could be involved would have serious economic and security implications for Thailand.

A Thai military court issued an arrest warrant last week for a then unidentified suspect for attempting to bomb a beach on the tourist island of Phuket.

BUSINESS Global tourism GDP resilient this year, but woes for France, Turkey

BERLIN - Travel and tourism will contribute less than previously forecast to the economies of France, Turkey and Brazil this year, hit by attacks, political and economic turmoil, though globally the sector is resilient, the World Travel and Tourism Council said.

Brazil is hosting the Olympic Games this year but its travel and tourism sector has suffered under a political crisis, its worst recession since the 1930s, and the Zika virus.

The sector’s contribution to Brazil’s gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to shrink by 1.6 percent this year, against a previous forecast for a drop of 0.9 percent, the WTTC said.

Islamist militant attacks in Paris, Brussels and Nice have resulted in lower demand for travel to Europe. In France, the travel and tourism sector’s contribution to GDP will grow 1.1 percent this year, down from a previous forecast of 2.9 percent.

“The Paris incident did have an impact because it’s the first point of entry to Europe for a lot of Asian and North American travellers,” David Scowsill, president of the WTTC told Reuters.

The number of foreign tourists fell sharply in France in the second quarter of the year, official data showed on Friday. In France, the sector contributed 80.4 billion euros ($90.9 billion), or 3.7 percent of total GDP, in 2015.

A series of militant bombings in Turkey and a failed coup have also deterred tourists, and the sector’s contribution to GDP there will shrink by 3.2 percent this year, sharply lower than a previously forecast drop of 0.2 percent.

Overall, however, the global travel and tourism sector is expected to grow by 3.1 percent in 2016, faster than predicted global GDP growth of 2.3 percent, driven by increasing numbers of travellers from Asian countries, especially China and India.

“There’s lots of macro-economic weakness around, but the travel and tourism industry is doing very well. It’s the same level of growth as 2015,” Scowsill said.

He said that despite security concerns, people were still travelling but had shifted destinations. Asian travellers were tending to choose Australia for vacations this year instead of Europe, for example.

Brazil’s Olympic Games, which ended on Sunday, should help to boost demand for travel there next year, Scowsill said, although he said Brazil had to deal with its economic problems.

In 2015, the direct contribution of the sector to Brazil’s GDP was 190.5 billion Brazilian reais ($59.5 billion), equivalent to 3.3 percent of total GDP, the WTTC said. (rtr)

Dollar gains, U.S. yields rise as investors await Fed hike signal

LONDON - The dollar strengthened and U.S. Treasury yields hit a two-week high on Monday on expectations the Federal Reserve will give a signal this week that it is gearing up to raise interest rates.

An upbeat assessment of the U.S. economy’s strength from Fed Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer on Sunday was seen raising the prospect of Fed chair Janet Yellen flagging up a rate rise at a meeting with the world’s central bankers on Friday.

The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, rose 0.4 percent to 94.872 , pulling away from a six-week low hit last week after minutes of the Fed’s last policy meeting showed rate-setters split on when to hike.

U.S. 10-year Treasury yields touched a two-week high of 1.60 percent on Monday while shorterdated yields touched levels not seen since Britain’s shock vote to leave the European Union in June.

World stocks fell 0.13% early on Monday but were flat at 0820 GMT after a bounce-back in Europe, led

up by Syngenta after its proposed takeover by ChemChina was approved by U.S. regulators.

“The market took his (Fischer’s) remarks to mean that the Fed’s Yellen might blow the same trumpet in her upcoming Jackson Hole remarks,” analysts at RBC Capital Markets said in a note.

Global central bankers will join the annual mountain retreat that in Jackson Hole, Wyoming on Thursday, with Yellen due to speak the following day.

Emerging stocks and currencies fell broadly on Monday. Many emerging countries borrow heavily in US dollars meaning an appreciation in the greenback makes it more expensive for them to service their debt.

Interest rate futures contracts indicate that the market is pricing in about 50/50 odds of a U.S. rate

increase by the end of the year.

Oil prices fell on Monday as analysts said they doubted upcoming producer talks would rein in oversupply.

Soaring exports of refined products from China also pressured prices, as this was seen as the latest indicator of an ongoing global fuel glut, traders said.

Brent crude futures were trading at $49.94 per barrel at 0712 GMT, down 95 cents, or 1.87 percent.

Crude futures have risen almost $10 a barrel since early August on speculation that Saudi Arabia and other members of the OPEC will agree next month to a production freeze deal with non-OPEC producers led by Russia.

U.S. crude fell 1.57 percent to $47.75 after gaining 9 percent last week, rising for a second straight week.

Gold fell on Monday to its lowest in more than a week as the dollar strengthened. Spot gold was down 0.6 percent at $1,333.01 an ounce. (rtr)

He said he had ordered for the extension of the airport runway and renovation of the passenger terminal.

“Extension of the runway and renovation of the terminal are expected to be completed by the end of this year to facilitate tourists to Lake Toba,” he said.

Reconstruction of the Tanah Ponggol bridge spanning the water canal between the island and the mainland would be carried out in 2017 to be finished in two years, he added.

The entourage of the president included Tourism Minister Arief Yahya, Minister at the State Secretariat Pratikno, Environment and Forest Minister Siti Nurbaya, Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, and Public Works Minister Basuki Hadimuljono.

Govt to upgrade runway of Silangit Airport

SIMALUNGUN - The Government has decided to upgrade the runway of Silangit Airport to support the tourism development of Lake Toba.

The runway would be lengthen to 2,650 meters and widen to 45 meters, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said here, on Saturday evening, after attending a limited cabinet meeting.

Currently, the runway is 2,400 meters long and 30 meters wide.

The airport is expected to be able to accommodate Boeing 737 800 aircraft after being upgraded.

Besides, the runway of Sibisa Airport in Toba Samosir District will be lengthened to 2,250 meters so Boeing 737 500 could land on it, the minister noted.

The Sibisa Airport now has runway measuring 750 meters long and 23 meters wide.

“The meeting was actually not over, it will be finalized on Sunday.

The President wants to personally see the location of Lake Toba Authority,” Pandjaitan said.

The government also plans to build a 87 km-long toll road from Pematang Siantar to Simalungun in 2017.

“It will be easier because over 50 km of the toll road covers land belonging to PTPN (state plantation company). So, we hope that the construction of toll road from Medan up to here will be fully completed in 2019,” the minister said.

The government will also clean up the environment of Lake Toba and evaluate the presence of many floating fish cages on the lake.

He also said that three investors had held meetings with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to discuss constructions of hotels, golf fields, and convention centers in Toba area.

“They are committed to building five-star hotels, international convention centers, and other things,” Pandjaitan remarked.

The government also plan to develop an international flower park to support the Lake Toba tourism. (rtr)

GAZIANTEP - A suicide bomber aged between 12 and 14 carried out the attack on a wedding party in the Turkish city of Gaziantep on Saturday that killed at least 51 people, the president said.

The attack was the deadliest in a series of bombings in Turkey this year, and President Tayyip Erdogan said Islamic State was likely behind it.

“Initial evidence suggests it was a Daesh attack,” Erdogan said in Istanbul on Sunday, using an Arabic name for the hardline Sunni Islamist group. He said 69 people were in hospital and 17 were “heavily injured”.

A destroyed suicide vest was found at the blast site, officials said.

Islamic State has been blamed for other similar attacks in Turkey, often targeting Kurdish gatherings in an effort to inflame ethnic tensions. The deadliest was last Octo-

ber, when suicide bombers killed more than 100 people at a rally of pro-Kurdish and labour activists in Ankara.

Saturday’s attack comes with Turkey still in shock just a month after Erdogan and the government survived an at tempted coup by rogue military officers, which Ankara blames on U.S.-based Islamist preacher Fethullah Gulen. Gulen has denied the charge.

The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) said the wedding party was for one of its members. The groom was among those injured, but the bride was not hurt.

Promised prosperity never arrived in Russianheld Crimea, locals say

ARMYANSK - More than two years after Russia annexed Crimea and promised its 2 million people a better life, residents say prices have soared, wages and pensions have stagnated and tourists have fled.

The sunny and mountainous Black Sea peninsula is back in the news, with Russian President Vladimir Putin accusing Kiev of sending infiltrators across the border to wreck its industry. But locals say the damage has already been done by Moscow’s neglect.

“We joined Russia and they stopped giving a damn about us,” Yevgeny, a worker at a titanium plant in the town of Armyansk told Reuters.

“People are naive. They thought that if we were part of Russia, everything would be Russian. Prices have now jumped to the Russian level, but wages have stayed the same. That’s the main problem.”

Fearing reprisals from his boss, Yevgeny declined to give his surname, as did other workers who spoke to Reuters.

Armyansk, a sleepy Crimean town near the newly-established border with Ukraine, is not far from where Russia says it fought armed clashes with Ukrainian infiltrators last week. Kiev says the clashes never took place and Moscow fabricated the incident as a possible pretext for new military action against Ukraine.

The alleged plot has dominated headlines in Crimea, distracting attention away from the region’s own problems. But according to some residents of Armyansk, a long way from Crimea’s Tsarist-era palaces and its picturesque mountainous

sea coast, those problems urgently need addressing.

Armyansk has never been prosperous. A quarter of the town’s 20,000 people work at the Crimea Titanium chemical plant, riding in dozens of identical green passenger buses to the factory from the town each morning, and back again in the afternoon.

When Crimea was controlled by Ukraine, goods and services were affordable, and the plant’s workers were able to treat themselves now and then, they say. But after Kiev blocked freight supplies last year prices soared.

“I can only buy food and it’s hard to buy clothes,” said Pavel, a technician, who said he was paid 17,000 roubles ($265) a month.

That is only around half the average monthly income in Russia.

“It would be enough in Ukraine because prices were lower. I’m shocked. My wage is stuck and everything grows in price.”

Three other workers who spoke to Reuters described monthly salaries ranging from just 10,000 roubles for a laboratory assistant to 21,000 for a man who runs an engineering department.

The Crimea Titanium plant is controlled by Ukrainian tycoon Dmytro Firtash. His spokesman and the plant’s management did not reply to for requests for comment.

Russia is building a bridge to link Crimea to southern Russia it hopes will establish a new supply route and reduce consumer prices.

However the first trucks are not expected to be able to use it until 2018 at the earliest. (rtr)

Dharma Durga Kutri Hill Temple GIANYAR - There are several Pura located north of Blahbatuh and near the village of Sema Buang you will find this temple. Dharma Durga Kutri Hill Temple holds one of the finest odalan (celebration of the temple’s founding) in the area. Pura Kedarman is diagonally opposite a smaller Pura in the village of Kutri.

This is an intriguing temple, and once you enter the lower level through the Candi Bentar, or entrance gateway, there are several pavilions and an interesting array of smaller statues whose actual dating the pendeta was unaware. At the rear, you will notice a very steep and slippy stone stairway leading up through a Banyan tree forest.

This stairway leads to a sanctuary up on the hill. It is the sanctuary on the top of the hill that is the treasure of Dharma Durga Kutri Hill Temple.

A statue of King Airlagga’s mother Gunapriadarmapatni Mahendradatta, can be found in a small shelter. The statue is in the shape of a six-arm goddess of death, a Durga, slaying a bull possessed by a demon, It is interesting to note the surrounding flames carved into the statue, and the ‘weapons’ of supernatural powers.

Those being a shield and spear, bow and arrows, and a flaming circular object believed to be a disc. Mahendradatta ruled in Bali until 1006 AD. Either side of the statue of Mahendradatta, there are Linga’s, several small flat stones with faded inscriptions, and a small statue of Ganesha.

Twenty years ago, long before marketers invented “Team GB”, Britain trudged home from Atlanta with a solitary gold medal courtesy of rowers Steve Redgrave and Matt Pinsent and just 15 in all, placing a humiliating 36th in the medal table.

They leave Rio with 67, including 27 gold, sitting proudly second, above China and behind only the all-powerful United States.

Remarkably that tally surpasses the 65 with 29 gold from the home Games of four years ago and is topped only by the London Games of 1908 when they won 146, 56 of them gold - totals inflated somewhat by many events where barely anyone else took part.

“It makes me bloody proud,” Sebastian Coe, the former head of the London Games organising committee said this week.

“What a legacy. We wanted to ensure not just participation but to inspire people.

“We are winning medals across sports you would not have even have dreamed of even 10 years ago.”

When Britain started to begin punching its weight again in

Sydney 2000, with 11 golds, the hosts joked that they could win only in sports where you have to sit down.

While it is true that cycling, rowing, sailing, equestrian and canoeing have continued to provide the bulk of the golds, the joke no longer holds water as Britain have won in Rio across 15 sports, more than any other nation. They also medalled in 18 of the 23 sports entered.

Track cycling was again the cash cow, as every member of the team came home with something in a haul of six golds, four silvers and a bronze.

Among those winners were Bradley Wiggins, who now has the most medals of any British Olympian with eight, including five gold, and Jason Kenny, who joined Chris Hoy on six as winner of most golds.

Laura Trott’s double in Rio made her the all-time leading woman with four.

Rowing brought home three more, athletics, through Mo Farah, sailing, canoeing and equestrian, two each.

The reasons behind Britain’s turnaround are varied but one constant and key driver has been the huge financial support offered by national lottery funding, which

RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazil’s men’s volleyball team defeated Italy on Sunday to win their third gold medal in the sport and cap their country’s best Olympic performance with a total of seven golds in the Rio Games.

The Brazilians had lost to the Italians in a pool match but won the final in straight sets 25-22 28-26 26-24, handing Italy its third silver medal in men’s volleyball.

Brazil struggled in the pool stage, losing two matches, to the U.S. and Italy, and only making it into the knockout rounds after a tense victory over France in the last game.

But having emerged from the pool, Brazil began to show its class and fueled by raucous home support dropped just one set between the quarter-finals and clinching gold.

The Brazilian victory was largely due to a barrage of winning spikes, serves and blocks by its outstanding outside hitter Wallace de Souza, who scored 20 of Brazil’s points.

“The Brazilian team played very well and definitively deserved to win. My team gave it all they had, but Brazil was superior and dominated,” said Italian coach Gianlorenzo Blengini.

Brazilian fans that packed Rio’s Maracanazinho stadium erupted with joy, chanting “The champ is back.” Cheering was heard in neighborhood streets across Rio. In the audience to witness the win was Brazilian soccer star Neymar, fresh from Saturday’s goldwinning final against Germany.

Brazil last won volleyball men’s gold in 2004 when it beat Italy in

Athens, and took its first at Barcelona in 1992.

Earlier on Sunday, the United States men’s volleyball team recovered to defeat defending Olympic champions Russia in a five-set battle for the bronze medal.

The U.S. lost the first two sets but came back to win 23-25 21-25 25-19 25-19 15-13, with an ace in the tie-breaker by top scorer Matt Anderson helping to seal the victory.

The Americans, a young team with eight players who had never competed in the Olympics, came to Rio seeking a fourth U.S. gold medal in the sport and were favorites after winning the World Cup last year.

They lost their first two matches against Canada and Italy, who beat them again in the semi-finals. (rtr)

Dharma Durga Kutri Hill Temple GIANYAR - There are several Pura located north of Blahbatuh and near the village of Sema Buang you will find this temple. Dharma Durga Kutri Hill Temple holds one of the finest odalan (celebration of the temple’s founding) in the area. Pura Kedarman is diagonally opposite a smaller Pura in the village of Kutri.

This is an intriguing temple, and once you enter the lower level through the Candi Bentar, or entrance gateway, there are several pavilions and an interesting array of smaller statues whose actual dating the pendeta was unaware. At the rear, you will notice a very steep and slippy stone stairway leading up through a Banyan tree forest.

This stairway leads to a sanctuary up on the hill. It is the sanctuary on the top of the hill that is the treasure of Dharma Durga Kutri Hill Temple.

A statue of King Airlagga’s mother Gunapriadarmapatni Mahendradatta, can be found in a small shelter. The statue is in the shape of a six-arm goddess of death, a Durga, slaying a bull possessed by a demon, It is interesting to note the surrounding flames carved into the statue, and the ‘weapons’ of supernatural powers.

Those being a shield and spear, bow and arrows, and a flaming circular object believed to be a disc. Mahendradatta ruled in Bali until 1006 AD. Either side of the statue of Mahendradatta, there are Linga’s, several small flat stones with faded inscriptions, and a small statue of Ganesha.

RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazil’s men’s volleyball team defeated Italy on Sunday to win their third gold medal in the sport and cap their country’s best Olympic performance with a total of seven golds in the Rio Games.

The Brazilians had lost to the Italians in a pool match but won the final in straight sets 25-22 28-26 26-24, handing Italy its third silver medal in men’s volleyball.

Brazil struggled in the pool stage, losing two matches, to the U.S. and Italy, and only making it into the knockout rounds after a tense victory over France in the last game.

But having emerged from the pool, Brazil began to show its class and fueled by raucous home support dropped just one set between the quarter-finals and clinching gold.

The Brazilian victory was largely due to a barrage of winning spikes, serves and blocks by its outstanding outside hitter Wallace de Souza, who scored 20 of Brazil’s points.

“The Brazilian team played very well and definitively deserved to win. My team gave it all they had, but Brazil was superior and dominated,” said Italian coach Gianlorenzo Blengini.

Brazilian fans that packed Rio’s Maracanazinho stadium erupted with joy, chanting “The champ is back.” Cheering was heard in neighborhood streets across Rio. In the audience to witness the win was Brazilian soccer star Neymar, fresh from Saturday’s goldwinning final against Germany.

Brazil last won volleyball men’s gold in 2004 when it beat Italy in

Athens, and took its first at Barcelona in 1992.

Earlier on Sunday, the United States men’s volleyball team recovered to defeat defending Olympic champions Russia in a five-set battle for the bronze medal.

The U.S. lost the first two sets but came back to win 23-25 21-25 25-19 25-19 15-13, with an ace in the tie-breaker by top scorer Matt Anderson helping to seal the victory.

The Americans, a young team with eight players who had never competed in the Olympics, came to Rio seeking a fourth U.S. gold medal in the sport and were favorites after winning the World Cup last year.

Turkey’s Erdogan blames child bomber for attack that killed 51

GAZIANTEP - A suicide bomber aged between 12 and 14 carried out the attack on a wedding party in the Turkish city of Gaziantep on Saturday that killed at least 51 people, the president said.

The attack was the deadliest in a series of bombings in Turkey this year, and President Tayyip Erdogan said Islamic State was likely behind it.

“Initial evidence suggests it was a Daesh attack,” Erdogan said in Istanbul on Sunday, using an Arabic name for the hardline Sunni Islamist group. He said 69 people were in hospital and 17 were “heavily injured”.

A destroyed suicide vest was found at the blast site, officials said.

Islamic State has been blamed for other similar attacks in Turkey, often targeting Kurdish gatherings in an effort to inflame ethnic tensions. The deadliest was last Octo-

ber, when suicide bombers killed more than 100 people at a rally of pro-Kurdish and labour activists in Ankara.

Saturday’s attack comes with Turkey still in shock just a month after Erdogan and the government survived an at tempted coup by rogue military officers, which Ankara blames on U.S.-based Islamist preacher Fethullah Gulen. Gulen has denied the charge.

The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) said the wedding party was for one of its members. The groom was among those injured, but the bride was not hurt.

“The celebrations were coming to an end and there was a big explosion among people dancing,” said 25-year-old Veli Can. “There was blood and body parts everywhere.”

Promised prosperity never arrived in Russianheld Crimea, locals say

ARMYANSK - More than two years after Russia annexed Crimea and promised its 2 million people a better life, residents say prices have soared, wages and pensions have stagnated and tourists have fled.

The sunny and mountainous Black Sea peninsula is back in the news, with Russian President Vladimir Putin accusing Kiev of sending infiltrators across the border to wreck its industry. But locals say the damage has already been done by Moscow’s neglect.

“We joined Russia and they stopped giving a damn about us,” Yevgeny, a worker at a titanium plant in the town of Armyansk told Reuters.

“People are naive. They thought that if we were part of Russia, everything would be Russian. Prices have now jumped to the Russian level, but wages have stayed the same. That’s the main problem.”

Fearing reprisals from his boss, Yevgeny declined to give his surname, as did other workers who spoke to Reuters.

Armyansk, a sleepy Crimean town near the newly-established border with Ukraine, is not far from where Russia says it fought armed clashes with Ukrainian infiltrators last week. Kiev says the clashes never took place and Moscow fabricated the incident as a possible pretext for new military action against Ukraine.

The alleged plot has dominated headlines in Crimea, distracting attention away from the region’s own problems. But according to some residents of Armyansk, a long way from Crimea’s Tsarist-era palaces and its picturesque mountainous

sea coast, those problems urgently need addressing.

Armyansk has never been prosperous. A quarter of the town’s 20,000 people work at the Crimea Titanium chemical plant, riding in dozens of identical green passenger buses to the factory from the town each morning, and back again in the afternoon.

When Crimea was controlled by Ukraine, goods and services were affordable, and the plant’s workers were able to treat themselves now and then, they say. But after Kiev blocked freight supplies last year prices soared.

“I can only buy food and it’s hard to buy clothes,” said Pavel, a technician, who said he was paid 17,000 roubles ($265) a month.

That is only around half the average monthly income in Russia.

“It would be enough in Ukraine because prices were lower. I’m shocked. My wage is stuck and everything grows in price.”

Three other workers who spoke to Reuters described monthly salaries ranging from just 10,000 roubles for a laboratory assistant to 21,000 for a man who runs an engineering department.

The Crimea Titanium plant is controlled by Ukrainian tycoon Dmytro Firtash. His spokesman and the plant’s management did not reply to for requests for comment.

Russia is building a bridge to link Crimea to southern Russia it hopes will establish a new supply route and reduce consumer prices.

However the first trucks are not expected to be able to use it until 2018 at the earliest. (rtr)

BUSINESS Global tourism GDP resilient this year, but woes for France, Turkey

BERLIN - Travel and tourism will contribute less than previously forecast to the economies of France, Turkey and Brazil this year, hit by attacks, political and economic turmoil, though globally the sector is resilient, the World Travel and Tourism Council said.

Brazil is hosting the Olympic Games this year but its travel and tourism sector has suffered under a political crisis, its worst recession since the 1930s, and the Zika virus.

The sector’s contribution to Brazil’s gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to shrink by 1.6 percent this year, against a previous forecast for a drop of 0.9 percent, the WTTC said.

Islamist militant attacks in Paris, Brussels and Nice have resulted in lower demand for travel to Europe. In France, the travel and tourism sector’s contribution to GDP will grow 1.1 percent this year, down from a previous forecast of 2.9 percent.

“The Paris incident did have an impact because it’s the first point of entry to Europe for a lot of Asian and North American travellers,” David Scowsill, president of the WTTC told Reuters.

The number of foreign tourists fell sharply in France in the second quarter of the year, official data showed on Friday. In France, the sector contributed 80.4 billion euros ($90.9 billion), or 3.7 percent of total GDP, in 2015.

A series of militant bombings in Turkey and a failed coup have also deterred tourists, and the sector’s contribution to GDP there will shrink by 3.2 percent this year, sharply lower than a previously forecast drop of 0.2 percent.

Overall, however, the global travel and tourism sector is expected to grow by 3.1 percent in 2016, faster than predicted global GDP growth of 2.3 percent, driven by increasing numbers of travellers from Asian countries, especially China and India.

“There’s lots of macro-economic weakness around, but the travel and tourism industry is doing very well. It’s the same level of growth as 2015,” Scowsill said.

He said that despite security concerns, people were still travelling but had shifted destinations. Asian travellers were tending to choose Australia for vacations this year instead of Europe, for example.

Brazil’s Olympic Games, which ended on Sunday, should help to boost demand for travel there next year, Scowsill said, although he said Brazil had to deal with its economic problems.

In 2015, the direct contribution of the sector to Brazil’s GDP was 190.5 billion Brazilian reais ($59.5 billion), equivalent to 3.3 percent of total GDP, the WTTC said. (rtr)

Dollar gains, U.S. yields rise as investors await Fed hike signal

LONDON - The dollar strengthened and U.S. Treasury yields hit a two-week high on Monday on expectations the Federal Reserve will give a signal this week that it is gearing up to raise interest rates.

An upbeat assessment of the U.S. economy’s strength from Fed Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer on Sunday was seen raising the prospect of Fed chair Janet Yellen flagging up a rate rise at a meeting with the world’s central bankers on Friday.

The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, rose 0.4 percent to 94.872 , pulling away from a six-week low hit last week after minutes of the Fed’s last policy meeting showed rate-setters split on when to hike.

U.S. 10-year Treasury yields touched a two-week high of 1.60 percent on Monday while shorterdated yields touched levels not seen since Britain’s shock vote to leave the European Union in June.

World stocks fell 0.13% early on Monday but were flat at 0820 GMT after a bounce-back in Europe, led

up by Syngenta after its proposed takeover by ChemChina was approved by U.S. regulators.

“The market took his (Fischer’s) remarks to mean that the Fed’s Yellen might blow the same trumpet in her upcoming Jackson Hole remarks,” analysts at RBC Capital Markets said in a note.

Global central bankers will join the annual mountain retreat that in Jackson Hole, Wyoming on Thursday, with Yellen due to speak the following day.

Emerging stocks and currencies fell broadly on Monday. Many emerging countries borrow heavily in US dollars meaning an appreciation in the greenback makes it more expensive for them to service their debt.

Interest rate futures contracts indicate that the market is pricing in about 50/50 odds of a U.S. rate

increase by the end of the year.

Oil prices fell on Monday as analysts said they doubted upcoming producer talks would rein in oversupply.

Soaring exports of refined products from China also pressured prices, as this was seen as the latest indicator of an ongoing global fuel glut, traders said.

Brent crude futures were trading at $49.94 per barrel at 0712 GMT, down 95 cents, or 1.87 percent.

Crude futures have risen almost $10 a barrel since early August on speculation that Saudi Arabia and other members of the OPEC will agree next month to a production freeze deal with non-OPEC producers led by Russia.

U.S. crude fell 1.57 percent to $47.75 after gaining 9 percent last week, rising for a second straight week.

Gold fell on Monday to its lowest in more than a week as the dollar strengthened. Spot gold was down 0.6 percent at $1,333.01 an ounce. (rtr)

He said he had ordered for the extension of the airport runway and renovation of the passenger terminal.

“Extension of the runway and renovation of the terminal are expected to be completed by the end of this year to facilitate tourists to Lake Toba,” he said.

Reconstruction of the Tanah Ponggol bridge spanning the water canal between the island and the mainland would be carried out in 2017 to be finished in two years, he added.

The entourage of the president included Tourism Minister Arief Yahya, Minister at the State Secretariat Pratikno, Environment and Forest Minister Siti Nurbaya, Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, and Public Works Minister Basuki Hadimuljono.

Govt to upgrade runway of Silangit Airport

SIMALUNGUN - The Government has decided to upgrade the runway of Silangit Airport to support the tourism development of Lake Toba.

The runway would be lengthen to 2,650 meters and widen to 45 meters, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said here, on Saturday evening, after attending a limited cabinet meeting.

Currently, the runway is 2,400 meters long and 30 meters wide.

The airport is expected to be able to accommodate Boeing 737 800 aircraft after being upgraded.

Besides, the runway of Sibisa Airport in Toba Samosir District will be lengthened to 2,250 meters so Boeing 737 500 could land on it, the minister noted.

The Sibisa Airport now has runway measuring 750 meters long and 23 meters wide.

“The meeting was actually not over, it will be finalized on Sunday.

The President wants to personally see the location of Lake Toba Authority,” Pandjaitan said.

The government also plans to build a 87 km-long toll road from Pematang Siantar to Simalungun in 2017.

“It will be easier because over 50 km of the toll road covers land belonging to PTPN (state plantation company). So, we hope that the construction of toll road from Medan up to here will be fully completed in 2019,” the minister said.

The government will also clean up the environment of Lake Toba and evaluate the presence of many floating fish cages on the lake.

He also said that three investors had held meetings with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to discuss constructions of hotels, golf fields, and convention centers in Toba area.

“They are committed to building five-star hotels, international convention centers, and other things,” Pandjaitan remarked.

The government also plan to develop an international flower park to support the Lake Toba tourism. (rtr)

Philippines drug war deaths climb to 1,800, president spars with UN

MANILA - The Philippines has recorded about 1,800 drugrelated killings since President Rodrigo Duterte took office seven weeks ago and launched a war on narcotics, far higher than previously believed, according to police figures.

Philippine National Police Chief Ronald Dela Rosa told a Senate committee on Monday that 712 drug traffickers and users had been killed in police operations since July 1.

Police were also investigating 1,067 other drug-related killings, Dela Rosa said, without giving details. The comments came a day after Duterte lashed out at the United Nations for criticising the wave of deaths.

As recently as Sunday, the number of suspected drug traffickers killed in Duterte’s war on drugs had been put at about 900 by Philippine officials. But this number included people who died since Duterte won the May 9 presidential election.

Duterte said in a bizarre and strongly worded late-night news conference on Sunday the Philip-

pines might leave the United Nations and invite China and others to form a new global forum, accusing it of failing to fulfil its mandate.

However, his foreign minister, Perfecto Yasay, said on Monday the Philippines would remain a U.N. member and described the president’s comments as expressions of “profound disappointment and frustration”.

“We are committed to the U.N. despite our numerous frustrations and disappointments with the international agency,” Yasay told a news conference.

Last week, two U.N. human rights experts urged Manila to stop the extra-judicial executions and killings.

Yasay said Duterte has promised to uphold human rights in the fight against drugs and has ordered the police to investigate and prosecute

offenders. He criticised the U.N. rapporteurs for “jumping to an arbitrary conclusion that we have violated human rights of people”.

“It is highly irresponsible on their part to solely rely on such allegations based on information from unnamed sources without proper substantiation,” he said of the United Nations.

Senator Leila de Lima, a staunch critic of the president, started a twoday congressional inquiry into the killings on Monday, questioning top police and anti-narcotics officials to explain the “unprecedented” rise in killings.

“I am disturbed that we have killings left and right as breakfast every morning,” she said.

“My concern does not only revolve around the growing tally of killings reported by the police.

What is particularly worrisome is that the campaign against drugs seems to be an excuse for some law enforcers and other elements like vigilantes to commit murder with impunity,” De Lima said. (rtr)

BANGKOK - Thai police on Monday said at least 20 people were involved in carrying out a wave of deadly bombings in the country’s south earlier this month.

National police chief Jakthip Chaijinda said that police have not ruled out any motive for the attacks and believe that many of those involved came from Thailand’s Muslim-majority southern provinces.

“We know where they came from, where they went. We believe there are at least 20 people involved in this network,” Jakthip told reporters, without giving further details.

No group has claimed responsibility for the Aug. 11 and Aug. 12 attacks which took place in seven provinces and targeted high profile beach towns, killing four people and injuring dozens.

The bombings came days after Thais voted to accept a militarybacked constitution in a nation-wide referendum.

Police and the government ruled out any link to foreign militants within hours of the attacks and insisted the perpetrators were homegrown.

Jakthip said that he could not confirm whether the bombings were an extension of an insurgency in the southern provinces that border Malaysia, where Malay-Muslim insurgents are fighting a bloody war that has claimed more than 6,500 lives since 2004.

“We are unwilling to say what their motive is and whether it is related to the referendum, the insurgency or whether they were hired,” Jakthip said.

Last week, Thai Defense Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said the bombings were “definitely not an extension” of the insurgency.

by Malay-Muslim insurgents was unsurprising as admitting southern insurgents could be involved would have serious economic and security implications for Thailand.

A Thai military court issued an arrest warrant last week for a then unidentified suspect for attempting to bomb a beach on the tourist island of Phuket.

Study finds cosmic rays increased heart risks among Apollo astronauts

CAPE CANAVERAL - Apollo astronauts who ventured to the moon are at five times greater risk of dying from heart disease than shuttle astronauts, U.S. researchers said on Thursday, citing the dangers of cosmic radiation beyond the Earth’s magnetic field.

The study by researchers at Florida State University and NASA found that three Apollo astronauts, including Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon, or 43 percent of those studied, died from cardiovascular disease, a finding with implications for future human travel beyond Earth.

The research, published in the journal Scientific Reports, was the first to look at the mortality of Apollo astronauts, the only people so far to travel beyond a few hundred miles (km) of Earth.

It found that the chief health threat to the Apollo astronauts came from cosmic rays, which are more prevalent and powerful beyond the magnetic bubble that surrounds Earth.

NASA disputed the findings, saying it was too early to draw conclusions about the effect of cosmic

rays on Apollo astronauts because the current data is limited.

The results of the study have implications for the United States and other countries, as well as private companies, such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which are planning missions to Mars and other destinations beyond Earth.

For the study, the researchers examined the death records of 42 astronauts who flew in space, including seven Apollo veterans, and 35 astronauts who died without ever going into space.

They found the Apollo astronauts’ mortality rate from cardiovascular disease was as much as five times higher than for astronauts who never flew, or for those who flew low-altitude missions aboard the space shuttle that orbited a few hundred miles above Earth.

David denies having murdered traffic policeman

A companion study simulated weightlessness and radiation exposure in mice and showed that radiation exposure was far more threatening to the cardiovascular system than other factors, lead scientist Michael Delp said in an interview.

“What the mouse data show is that deep space radiation is harmful to vascular health,” he said.

So far, only 24 astronauts have flown beyond Earth’s protective magnetic shield, in missions spanning a four-year period from December 1968 to December 1972.

Of those, eight have died, seven of whom were included in the study. The cause of death of the eighth astronaut, Apollo 14’s Edgar Mitchell, who died in February 2016, has not been released, so he was excluded from the study, Delp said. Mitchell was the sixth person to walk on the moon.

Delp and colleagues are working on a follow-up study that includes more detail on family medical histories, smoking and other factors. (rtr)

HILO — Six scientists are close to wrapping up a year of near isolation in a Mars simulation on a Hawaii mountain.

The scientists are housed in a dome on Mauna Loa and can go outside only in spacesuits, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported (http://bit.ly/2b9NTgt).

They manage limited resources while conducting research and working to avoid personal conflicts.

Communication is delayed the 20 minutes, the length it would take to relay messages from Mars.

Kim Binsted, principal investigator for the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation, said this simulation is the secondlongest of its kind after a mission that lasted 520 days in Russia.

“They’re doing OK as far as we can tell,” Binsted said of the scientists.

Previous simulations in the Mauna Loa dome have lasted four to eight months.

Mauna Loa soil is similar to what would be found on Mars. The area’s high elevation means almost no plant growth.

NASA funded the study run through the University of Hawaii.

The scientists will have access to fresh produce and other foods not available to them in the dome when the simulation ends Aug. 28.

“They are clamoring to get into the ocean,” Binsted said. “I think they will enjoy having a beer as well.”

DENPASAR - The suspect David James Taylor from England and Sarah Connor from Australia could have a break because there was no interrogation on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 21). Previously, they underwent intensive examination related to the murder of the traffic policeman Wayan Sudarsa. The suspect David was even examined until midnight.

BANGLI - Clean water crisis in a number of areas is predicted to be as unserious as last year. It is indicated by the absence of request of water supply from village government to the district government. In addition, the recent rainfall remains high.

Other than relying on the supply from the government, a number of residents in the area usually get water by purchasing. Each tank truck is sold for around IDR 220,000.

Sarjana described that according to the series of ritual, the nyekah at Batur customary village has been started on July 29 with the nanceb ritual. Then, it was resumed with mecaru / ngeruwak, bhakti pengalang, initiation of the buildings, negtegang, mekarya sanganan, and preparation of bade tower on August 3. Several series of the ceremonies continued to be implemented such as the notification of cremation on August 12, invoking the soul at Dalem Temple, ngeplugin / nundunin, ngening, nyiramang and menek beya on August 20. On Last Sunday denoting the peak of the ritual was carried out some processions like ngening, piuning ngelungah at the outermost courtyard of the Dalem Temple, invoking pengentas holy water, peak of cremation ritual, mecaru and megat tali. “The ceremony today is held at two locations namely at the cemetery of Batur customary village and Tunon parking space of Batur Temple,” he explained.

In the culmination of the nyekah ritual, the means in use consisted of two bade towers and a padma shrine. Both were paraded by thousands of residents coalesced into the supporting hamlets of jero baris, jero batu dauh rurung and jero batu dangin rurung, jero gambel as well as jero roban.

Sarjana added that according to tradition at Batur village in the cremation procession there were no bodies cremated but they have been represented with sawa rishi made from sandalwood tree. “Peak of the nyekah ritual today is officiated over by Ida Pedanda or high priest from Geria Tegallalang, Bangli,” he said.

After implementing the peak of the nyekah ritual on Sunday, a series of other processions will be resumed on Monday (Aug. 22) by holding bhakti penyapuh, meguru piduka and piuning ngeroras.

Then, on the following day will be organized the nunas don bingin, ngajum, nyekah and nganyut.

‘Ben-Hur’ Flops With $11.4 Million, ‘Suicide Squad’ Still on Top

LOS ANGELES - “Ben-Hur” derailed spectacularly at the multiplexes this weekend, as the latest attempt to revive the chariot racing epic opened to an anemic $11.4 million. That’s a disastrous result for the $100 million production, putting “Ben-Hur” in the ranks of the summer’s biggest flops.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Paramount co-produced the remake of Lew Wallace’s novel “Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ”; the book was the basis for the 1959 blockbuster that followed Charlton Heston into the arena. “This is the bomb of the summer,” said Jeff Bock, a box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “They went big and they went home.”

Although MGM put up roughly 80% of the budget for the film, its failure will be felt at Paramount. The studio has had a bad streak at the box office of late, fielding duds such as “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” and “Zoolander 2.” That’s not the only source of strife. Its parent company, Viacom, has been engulfed in an epic corporate struggle pitting CEO Philippe Dauman over the Redstone family, the media conglomerate’s controlling stakeholders.

That issue, at least, is moving towards a resolution, as Viacom announced this weekend that Dauman was stepping down from atop thecompany and will be replaced on an interim basis by COO Thomas Dooley.

“Ben-Hur’s” backers aggressively courted the Christian community, doing outreach to pastors and holding tastemaker screenings for religious leaders. The studios also hoped that producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, who earned devout points with “Son of God” and the mini-series “The Bible,” would help them turn out values audiences.

Instead, “Ben-Hur” trailed the $47 million debut of “Noah” and the $24 million launch of “Exodus: Gods and Kings,” two recent Biblical epics that lacked a heavenly touch.

“Ben-Hur” drew a crowd that was 51% female and 94% over the age of 25. It also did well in the South and Southwest, areas that are more religious, but did not do as well in more secular regions of the country such as the Northeast and the West Coast.

The film, it seems, could not expand beyond its core Christian audience. Paramount Vice-Chairman Rob Moore noted that “Ben-Hur” is the latest in a string of remakes and sequels such as “Independence Day: Resurgence” and “Ghostbusters” to have failed to draw crowds. (rtr)

Nyekah ritual at Batur

Customary village holds the ritual for 151 bodies BANGLI - Batur customary village in Kintamani held a nyekah or pitri yadnya ceremony. A total of 151 bodies were consecrated in this ceremony whose peak took place on Sunday (Aug. 21).

Chief of the ritual committee, I Gede Sarjana, said that the nyekah ceremony is regularly carried out by Batur customary village every two years. In addition to strengthening social relations of the local residents, the ceremony held en masse is also meant to save costs where in this ceremony each body is charged at IDR 6 million.

More Carnival than clockwork, but Rio pulls it off

RIO DE JANEIRO - In the end, it was a tale of two Games.

The yin and yang Olympics, one of stark contrasts between the feats on the field of play, and regrettable actions off it.

Staged despite a lack of funds, deep recession and social turmoil, Rio de Janeiro unfurled South America’s first Olympic Games hoping against hope that the power of sport would eclipse a seemingly endless list of problems.

Arguably, it did.

Try telling one of the 80,000 Brazilians crammed into the Maracana stadium, who roared deliriously as Neymar won Brazil football gold with a crisp last-kick penalty, that this Olympics was anything but a success.

Or the residents of a notorious Rio slum who watched one of their own win Brazil’s first gold, in the judo arena.

Or try telling any one of the nine athletes who clinched their country’s first Olympic golds, or Team GB who finished second in the medal table with their best performance in more than a century with golds across an unrivalled 15 sports.

Some felt Rio failed to present the five-star experience tourists and visitors had enjoyed at London

2012, but the Games proved the city could deliver a spectacle against the odds.

“Nothing big wrong went wrong, right?” was a verdict repeated time and time again by smiling locals.

A swampy green diving pool and a bullet whizzing into the equestrian centre were of no consequence to most locals.

Rio 2016 had struggled with transportation, security, empty stands and dwindling funds as Brazil was gripped by its worst economic downturn since the 1930s.

For weeks, they suffered blow after blow. They were accused of

cutting corners and the Australians threatened not to move into the athletes’ village unless urgent improvements were made.

Ryan Lochte and the other three U.S. swimmers hijacked media coverage for the second half of the Games by lying about being robbed at gunpoint to cover up for a drunken night.

And then there was the arrest of 71-year-old International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Pat Hickey in a dawn raid, as part of a Brazilian police investigation into ticket touting.

But for the thousands of visitors and locals who embraced the Games, flowing each morning over

an elevated walkway into the Olympic Park, this had been a resounding success.

“Even with all our problems we pulled off a good Olympics. Nothing too bad happened and I’d say it was better than expected,” said Nivea Araujo, a Rio resident attending the closing ceremony.
