Perrie Edwards: Little Mix star felt ‘so alone’ after ‘overwhelming’ panic attacks

LOS ANGELES - Little Mix star Perrie Edwards has revealed she struggles with anxiety and panic attacks, opening up to her fans to help others going through similar experiences.

The singer said her first panic attack a few years ago was “so intense and overwhelming” that she thought she was having a heart attack. In an emotional post on Instagram, Edwards said that at her lowest, she did not want to leave the house.

She also revealed she had been to therapy sessions and that reducing her time on social media had helped. “When I first started to feel the effects of anxiety I thought I was losing my mind and it terrified me,” she said.

“I felt so alone and like I was the first person in the world to ever experience it.”

She added: “The first panic

attack was so intense and overwhelming. I felt like I was having a heart attack - I was so scared and confused and had no idea what was happening to me.

“I’m not sure what triggered that first one but it soon spiralled and I found myself in a really dark place, feeling alone and scared.”

Edwards, who rose to fame when Little Mix became the first group to win X Factor in 2011, went on to explain that while she had lots of friends and family around her, “I couldn’t explain to them what was happening to me or why”.

She continued: “It affected me so badly that I didn’t even want

to leave the house. I would step foot out the door and feel the overwhelming need to go straight back inside. It completely took over my life.”

The 25-year-old said the physical attacks have now stopped “but unfortunately the anxiety lives on”.

She said that while she has sometimes felt “like a prisoner in my own head”, realising she is not alone has helped. (net)

CALIFORNIA - Ingraham, one of Fox News’ highest-profile anchors and who has her own conservative talk show, The Ingraham Angle, sarcastically described the musician as “this dear artist”.

She was discussing Hussle’s 2016 hit with fellow rapper YG, FDT, which includes the chorus “f*** Donald Trump”.

Ingraham called the line about Mr Trump a “very creative refrain”,

adding that “the chorus that goes on and on, is that related to lowest unemployment ever, basically, for African-Americans?”

Bieber posted on Instagram on Thursday demanded her sacking, describing her behaviour as “absolutely disgusting”.

He said: “Laura Ingraham absolutely disgusting what you did on national television. How dare you laugh in the face of a person who

has passed on. “Doesn’t matter who it is. But disrespecting someone’s who was a pillar in the community and did right by people?

“Did you not think about the family who just lost a love one and now have to see you mock him on national television It’s absurd and you should be fired period. #repost#spreadawareness.”

Indonesia’s presidential challenger on Friday slammed pollsters as untrustworthy and said they should move to Antarctica so they could “lie to the penguins”, as he refused to concede defeat in this week’s election.

Firebrand ex-general Prabowo Subianto has rejected a dozen so-called quick counts that say Indonesian president Joko Widodo was re-elected Wednesday by a comfortable margin.

The counts, which are samples conducted by pollsters, have been reliable indicators in past elections.

Official results are not due until

next month.

Subianto -- pilloried online for his refusal to concede -- ratcheted up the rhetoric Friday, after claiming he was the Southeast Asian nation’s new president.

“The people of Indonesia don’t trust you,” he thundered to around a thousand supporters outside his home in the capital Jakarta. “Maybe

you can move to Antarctica. You can lie to the penguins.”

Friday’s crowd size was small for a city that has seen huge street protests in the past.

Subianto portrayed himself as a man of the people during the heated presidential campaign, despite his immense wealth and ties to Indonesia’s corrupt Suharto dictatorship,

which collapsed in 1998.

“This is a victory of the people.

The Indonesian people have risen,” he told the crowd. “The Indonesian people don’t want to be cheated anymore.”

On Thursday evening, Widodo said that he had received phone calls from world leaders to congratulate him on the country’s polls, but added that he would await final results before formally declaring victory. Subianto has alleged voter fraud and warned he would chal-

lenge the results in court.

He did the same, unsuccessfully, after losing to Widodo in 2014 and there is little to suggest Subianto will win this latest fight. MCB short circuit ensured to have caused fire at airport domestic terminal

From the results of the crime scene investigation, Chief of Denpasar Police, Ruddi Setiawan, explained the analysis found if the fires were caused by a short circuit in the Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) on panel 02 located in the ATM Area.

A fire arose due to the failure of the MCB on the panel. So, the accumulation of heat generated resulted in sparks and caused fire.

“The short circuit happened in the MCB in accordance with the results of the laboratory testing carried out

The opportunity for Balinese arrack to enter tourism industry is also widely open considering that getting 300 percent of imported beverages is very expensive. Balinese arrack can be combined so that it becomes a substitute beverage.

Warm, dry winds may be straining Antarctica’s Larsen C ice shelf

TURQUOISE pools of snowmelt on the Antarctic Peninsula, including on the Larsen C ice shelf, have recently been forming months after the continent’s peak summer melt. Bursts of warm, dry wind cascading over mountains that run along the peninsula are largely to blame, researchers report April 11 in Geophysical Research Letters. In this March 2016 satellite image, meltwater on part of Larsen C can be seen at the foothills of these mountains, just one case of this type of wind-induced melting.

Eastward-flowing winds sweeping across the Antarctic Peninsula sometimes pick up enough speed to surmount its mountain peaks. As the air rises and chills, its moisture condenses and, in the process, reheats the air. So when the now-dry air comes coursing down the leeway mountainside, it can be a balmy 20° Celsius.

Researchers “have told me they’ve been in a T-shirt” while standing in these winds, says cryospheric scientist Tri Datta of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. Datta and her team compared satellite data collected from 1982 to 2017 with simulations of the peninsula’s ice sheet and atmospheric conditions during the same period. The team found that, since 2015, these winds called foehns have caused a lot of melting on the peninsula, including on Larsen C, as late as May, well into

Antarctica’s autumn. Foehns likely cause 60 percent of the total snowmelt on the northeastern part of the peninsula at that time of year, Datta says.

That’s a problem because meltwater can trickle into crevasses on Larsen C. The water’s own weight wedges the cracks open and may help cause the ice shelf to break off. Late melting can also prevent new snow from replenishing the ice shelf. In 2017, a giant iceberg broke from Larsen C, raising questions about the shelf’s stability and how it may contribute to rising seas.

It’s still unclear what’s driving these foehns and if they’re linked to climate change. And Datta emphasizes that three years is too short to constitute a trend.

A genetic scorecard could predict your risk of being obese

NEW YORK - There’s a new way to predict whether a baby will grow into an obese adult.

Combining the effect of more than 2.1 million genetic variants, researchers have created a genetic predisposition score that they say predicts severe obesity. People with scores in the highest 10 percent weighed, on average, 13 kilograms (about 29 pounds) more than those with the lowest 10 percent of scores, the team reports April 18 in Cell.

The finding may better quantify genes’ roles in obesity than previous prediction scores, but still fails to account for lifestyle, which may

be more important in determining body weight, other researchers say.

Still, the study shows that “your genetics really start to take hold very early in life,” says coauthor Amit Khera, a cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.

Weight differences showed up as early as age 3, and by age 18, those with the highest scores weighed 12.3 kilograms more on average than those with the lowest scores, Khera and his colleagues found.

harder to maintain a healthy weight than others, he says.

People with the highest scores were 25 times more likely to have severe obesity — a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40 — than those with the lowest scores. BMI is a measurement of body fat based on height and weight. A BMI of 18.5 (calculated as kilograms per meters squared of height) to 24.9 is considered healthy. BMIs 30 and above are considered obese.

The nearly 13-kilogram difference between people dealt a good genetic hand versus those dealt a bad one equals about five BMI points. “Five points is a lot,” Khera says. “That’s what takes you from normal to obese, from obese to severely obese.” High scores were also associated with increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and stroke.

Other scientists are skeptical that the score is an accurate predictor of obesity risk.

“I’m not convinced at all,” says Ruth Loos, a genetic epidemiologist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.

Genes are responsible for about half of people’s susceptibility to obesity, but lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise are equally or even more important, she says. “Even if you have a genetic score that perfectly

captures that 50 percent of genetics, you still will not be able to predict anyone’s future risk of obesity.”

Without figuring in the lifestyle factors, “you will never be accurate.”

Together, the 2.1 million genetic variants used in the study account for less than 10 percent of genes’ contribution to obesity, making the score a blunt tool that could lead to inaccurate predictions, Loos says.

For instance, the scores of 3,722 people in the Framingham Offspring study group — one group of people the researchers used to test their genetic score — suggested that 371 of the highest scorers would become severely obese. But only 58 of them did. “The score said bluntly, if you’re in the top decile you’ll become severely obese,” Loos says.

“So you basically scared people who were not supposed to be scared.”

On the flip side, the score would have failed to warn 171 of the 229 severely obese people in the Framingham group that they would gain so much weight, she says. “If you simply use the score and don’t account for lifestyle, you’ll be wrong many times.”

Khera and colleagues hope the score will help erase the stigma associated with obesity and shed some light on the biology behind the condition. Although people with high genetic risks may have

a harder time avoiding weight gain or losing weight, they also might be the people who benefit most from weight-control drugs or other measures, Khera says.

Endocrinologist and geneticist Mark Goodarzi of Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles worries that giving people a prediction of looming obesity could backfire.

That’s already happened in at least one study. People who were warned that their genes predisposed them to obesity ate more after learning of the propensity, he says. “I think they figured, ‘I’m doomed. I’m going to be obese anyway. Why fight it?’” Other studies have showed no change in people’s behavior after learning their genetic risks, he says.

It is not clear how doctors might use the score in treating patients, says A. Cecile Janssens, an epidemiologist at Emory University in Atlanta. “You should at least say in the discussion, ‘If we identify the people in the highest 10 percent, we can do X, Y and Z with these people, which we wouldn’t do with everyone else,’” she says. And instead of focusing on severe obesity, it might be more useful to be able to predict whether overweight people might become obese in order to prevent that transition. “You can [more] easily lose a few pounds than 30 or 40 pounds.” (net)

Aesthetic value of color photos is often considered better than black and white photos because the first impression arising when viewing a color photo is the visual moments that seem

alive, but sometimes black and white photos actually have more power in ‘turning on’ emotions and capturing expressions of the object in the photographic works.

When shooting black and white photos with a digital camera, it is still recommended to set the camera in color mode. Digital cameras produce a wider range of tones in color mode because in this mode the sensor takes data from three channels - red, green and blue or RGB. Black and white photos generated from processing color photos using a photo editor on a computer will

tend to have better quality because BW mode in the camera does not offer many choices. Similarly, use RAW mode. When using RAW and BW modes together in the camera, the display on the camera’s LCD is of course black and white, but actually has no effect on RAW files (still colored). When you apply RAW and JPEG format, you will even obtain extra flexibilities.

The best light

Keep in mind that noise or small white spots will appear more prominent in black and white photos than in color photos. On that account, try to use the lowest possible ISO in the camera. For example, apply ISO 50 or ISO 100. By using this low ISO, it will be very helpful when the photos are processed later to minimize the occurrence

of noise.

If the majority of photographers generally seem ‘allergic’ to take pictures when the atmosphere is cloudy, this does not happen to those liking black and white photography. Conversely, cloudy conditions are considered the best time to take black and white photos. The presence of cloudy sky will create lower contrast and this is the best time to make black and white photos. Even though on the cloudy sky color will look gray, for example, of course it doesn’t need to be taken care of because in black and white photos it won’t be too visible.

In shooting black and white photos, primarily when shooting outdoors, photographers are required to be able to highlight the shape of the object being photographed

maximally. For that purpose, side lighting is the best light because the fall of shadow becomes very interesting. This natural side lighting can generally be obtained in the morning or evening, so the time for shooting is ideally done in the morning or evening.

To produce dramatic black and white photos, the photographer’s foresight to exploit textures, patterns and lines is also an absolute thing. In black and white photos, the texture, pattern and lines will be more prominent and more attractive. So, exploit if you encounter these components. Please also be remembered that in black and white photography, we surely have eliminated other color elements, so that to produce attractive photos will require more imaginations and creativities. Klungkung exposed to volcanic ashes, BPBD distributes thousands of masks SEMARAPURA - Mount Agung returned to emit volcanic ashes after the eruption on Sunday morning (Apr. 21). Volcanic ashes from the Mount Agung crater spread to a number of districts, including Klungkung. Anticipating the impact on the community, the Klungkung Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) immediately spread masks to residents of Semarapura town on Sunday morning.

Incidentally, around the location of Semarapura town was taking place the car-free day as a regular activity of the local government. Head of the BPBD Klungkung, Putu Widiada, said that his agency took rapid reaction to reduce the impact on health because volcanic ash spread from Mount Agung erupting at 3:21 could cause serious respiratory problems.

“Approximately we distributed 3,000 pieces of masks directly to the public,” said Widiada.

Until 6:30, no more ashes scattered from the direction of Mount Agung were observed. However, the former ashes were still monitored to be hit by vehicles and winds, so that it is quite disturbing to people’s activities. When distributing masks, he also reminded the public to always be vigilant and carry out initial disaster mitigation measures especially for their own families because the activity of Mount Agung is classified to be still high, considering the alert status remains in level III. “We are still anticipating if the alert status of Mount Agung rises.

If there are refugees, the TRC of BPBD Klungkung is ready to prepare everything. We are always in communication with the Rendang Monitoring Post,” said Widiada.

As it is known, Mount Agung returned to erupt with a high column of volcanic ashes as high as 2,000

meters or 5,142 meters above sea level. The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity leaning towards the southwest. The Mount Agung PVMBG Observation Post recorded on a seismogram with maximum amplitude of 25 mm and duration of ± 2 minutes 55 seconds.

The eruption caused thin volcanic ash rain in several places, such as in Karangasem, Bangli and Klungkung districts. Distribution of the ashes depended on the direction of the wind. No casualties and no refugees were reported.

Community activities remain to run normally. Car-free day activities at Puputan Klungkung Square and around the central intersection were normal. The BPBD has distributed thousands of masks to the public.

The alert status of Mount Agung also remains in Advisory (level III).

People, climbers and tourists are prohibited from carrying out activities within a 4-km radius of the summit of Mount Agung crater. Outside this radius is safe. “As the name of active volcano implies, eruption is a normal phenomenon. It won’t be a disaster if the community stays in safe radius. It is no need to worry too much. Simply follow the PVMBG’s recommendations to be in a safe radius,” said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, Head of Center for Data and Information of National Disaster Mitigation Agency in his official release.

People are encouraged to remain calm when hearing information about a volcano erupting. It is no need to panic as it is a natural phenomenon of erupting volcanoes.

Most importantly, the community stays in a safe area according to recommendation of PVMBG. Don’t even approach the crater to document volcanic activities in the crater. It is dangerous. We must live in harmony with volcanic eruptions. (kmb31)

The can filled with “the air of Heisei” -- the 30-year reign of current Emperor Akihito -- hit the shelves on Monday at the ambitious price of 1,080 yen ($9.60), with producers hoping to sell as many as 1,000 units.

“Air is free of charge but we hope people will enjoy breathing the fresh air of Heisei after the new era comes, or just keep it as a momento,” company president Minoru Inamoto told AFP. Henari is seeing an influx of visitors and merchants there are selling everything from chocolate to polo shirts and alcohol bearing the name.

Anger as Malaysian cleared of murdering Indonesian maid

GIANYAR - Three days after the summit of Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh at the Samuan Tiga Bedulu Temple, the procession of siat sampian or sampian war and returning Ida Bhatara Manca was organized on Sunday (Apr. 21).

From the morning, hundreds of pilgrims have filled the temple known as the venue for unification of the sects to the decision on the establishment of customary village and trinity temples in Bali. They prayed while watching the siat sampian procession, baleganjur parade and then escorted the deities (Ida Bhatara Manca) to their respective abiding temple.

The siat sampian was followed by hundreds of parekan and permas. They threw each other and hit with a sampian made from young coconut leaves. Before the peak of siat sampian, permas danced nampyog and continued around the middle courtyard of the temple.

Conversely, the parekan ran around while holding on to each other to form waves and trying to reach the sacred building for three times. This procession was accom-

panied by gamelan music adding to the spirit of parekan and permas to start the siat sampian. After the procession of siat sampian, the deities went round clockwise.

Coordinator of the Samuan Tiga Temple, I Wayan Patera, explained the siat sampian is a battle between two different basic dualism namely the good and bad where the truth will later become the winner. Further, he explained the selection of sampian paraphernalia for the procession because it is the end part of the dangsil offered by the parekan.

In addition, sampian symbolizes the weapon of Lord Wisnu used to fight against adharma or evil on earth.

Interestingly, amid the clockwise procession, a baleganjur parade was organized by involving five customary villages namely the Tengkulak Kelod, Tengkulak Ten-

gah, Tengkulak Kaja, Bedulu and Wanayu Mas. “This parade is an artistic space before the deities or Ida Bhatara Manca prior to returning,” explained Wayan Patera.

The baleganjur parade is expected to give motivation to customary village for a space of creativity while preserving the arts. The next series of Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh ritual was the presentation of bhakti penganyaran by districts and municipality across Bali in turn through Monday (Apr. 29) where Ida Bhatara Manca arrives resumed with melasti procession without going to water springs (ngubeng).

On Tuesday (Apr. 30) all the deities return and the ritual series is closed. Furthermore, on Thursday (May. 5) is organized the pecaruan nyaga-nyaga nyepi karya exorcism rite and day of silence of the rite on Friday (May 5). (kmb35)

KUALA LUMPUR - A Malaysian woman has reportedly been cleared of murdering her Indonesian maid, who was allegedly tortured and forced to sleep outside with a dog, with activists Monday criticising the “shocking” decision.

Adelina Sau died in February last year after being found outside her employer’s home on the northern Malaysian island of Penang, with her head and face swollen and covered in wounds.

Many Indonesian maids work in more affluent Malaysia and tales of abuse are common, but the horrific nature of Sau’s case generated headlines and sparked diplomatic tensions between the neighbours.

Her employer, S. Ambika, was charged with murder -- an offence

that carries a mandatory death sentence in Malaysia -- shortly after the 21-year-old was rescued and died in hospital.

But the High Court in Penang dropped the murder charge against her last week, local media reported, without saying why.

Prominent Malaysian human rights lawyer Eric Paulsen called the decision “shocking and unacceptable”.

“This was one of the most public and harrowing abuse cases ever recorded and yet the attorneygeneral’s chambers somehow saw fit to drop the charge,” Paulsen, a member of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights, told AFP. Steven Sim, an MP from the area where Sau died, said the court

decision was “as tragic as the death of Adelina”.

Sim said he had contacted the attorney-general, Tommy Thomas, who had vowed to look into the case. In Indonesia, Wahyu Susilo, executive director of NGO Migrant Care, condemned the acquittal and described it as “far from justice”.

He said the employer may have been cleared due to a failure to get key witnesses, such as Sau’s parents, to testify at the trial, and called on Jakarta to lodge a protest.

Her murder caused anger in Indonesia, with the foreign minister branding it unacceptable.

Allegations of maid abuse, ranging from overwork to beatings and sex attacks, are a regular diplomatic flashpoint between the Southeast Asian neighbours. (afp)

Dubai arena is latest project unveiled despite weaker growth

DUBAI - This week, Dubai unveiled its latest megaproject: A stadium in the heart of a super luxe shopping and dining destination.

The arena, which will host sports events and concerts, is located in a leisure retail and residential destination called City Walk, which itself is new and was developed by Meraas, a company owned by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

It’s just one in a pipeline of projects the emirate is churning out in the lead-up to next year’s World Expo in Dubai, despite an economic slowdown and concerns that an oversupply is weighing down real estate prices.

“Property is a cyclical business and we are in a period of a soft market,” said Craig Plumb, head of research in the Middle East for JLL, a real estate and investment management firm.

Speaking at a real estate exhibition in Abu Dhabi, he noted that retail rents are also falling because landlords are responding to tougher market conditions by being much more flexible in their deals.

Dubai’s major developers, like Meraas, Emaar and Nakheel, have plans for new cities, neighborhoods, malls, skyscrapers and fantastical concepts like floating homes with floor-to-ceiling glass rooms submerged in the waters off the emirate’s coast.

The projects represent Dubai’s ambitions to grow as a tourism destination and financial hub, but the sheer scale of the developments is outstripping current demand.

Already, real estate prices across the United Arab Emirates have fallen since oil prices began their slide in 2014. A boost in oil prices last year appeared to have little effect on Dubai’s bellwether

real estate market.

Real estate prices in Downtown Dubai fell by as much as 16% last year, according to a report by property agent Savills.

Challenges surrounding a supply and demand mismatch are expected to continue through the year, the report said.

Statistics released this week

by Dubai’s government show that gross domestic product grew by 1.9% last year, a steady decline year-on-year since 2014 when growth clocked in at 4.6%.

Despite the economic slowdown, major Dubai developers show no signs of slowing down their sprawling projects ahead of next year’s Expo.

Nearly 10,000 residential units in Dubai were completed in the first quarter of 2019, according to JLL. Dubai predicts that the sixmonth-long World Fair, which runs from October 2020 to April 2021, will attract 25 million visits, although it is unclear how many of those will be visitors from outside Dubai.

A study by Ernst & Young forecast that Expo 2020 will contribute around $6 billion to the UAE’s economy during the sixmonth-long duration of the fair.

That figure is largely drawn from government data and EY stated in its report that it had not sought to establish the reliability of the sources it used nor had it verified the information provided to prepare the report. The report was commissioned by Dubai’s Expo organizers.

It is the atmosphere of daily life in Bindu River at Kesiman village, East Denpasar subdistrict.

Formerly, the river was dirty and unkempt, but it has been transformed into a tourist attraction. So, do not be surprised if Bindu River is now thronged by many visitors.

They are not only urban children playing with water, but also people from outside the region and even foreign tourists enjoying the city atmosphere.

To get to Bindu River, visitors can pass Gang Sardula through Jalan Turi Denpasar. The alley can only be passed by motorcycle, and then parked in front of the temple.

Come down the concrete stairs. The river offers quite cool atmosphere.

Such green open space has many different types of local plants up to a variety of flowers that can create a sense of peace.

Dam of Bindu River formerly being mute has now looked so beautiful. All leaves look fresh and green, sometimes are moving and waving in the wind. Sound of birds and other animals overlap with the joyful sound of dozens of children jumping into the water.

Peak of the temple festival or piodalan at Batu Medawu Temple, Nusa Penida, took place on January 30. After holding the bhakti penganyar, the series of the temple festival was closed on Saturday (Feb. 2). There is an interesting myth about the establishment of the temple belonging to the sad kahyangan in Klungkung which is related to the failure of Dukuh Jumpungan against Batara Toh Langkir, the ruler of mainland Bali.

Chairperson of the Ritual Committee, Putu Sujana, stated on Friday (Jan. 2) the piodalan in the sad kahyangan temple falls every six months and coincides with the Buda Kliwon Pahang. Local Hindus seemed enthusiastic about making prayers. Moreover, the Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Suwirta, and his wife also came to say prayers in order that nature and its contents will always be calm and peaceful, in the midst of the current situation increasingly familiar with natural disasters.

This temple has the concept of nyegara gunung or sea-mountainward where there is a combination of land and sea in one form of beauty. At the Batu Medawu Temple, all the pilgrims performed prayers for three times, namely at the Segara, Taman and Penataran Temple.

This temple is supported by half the customary villagers, starting from the customary village of Kutampi Atas to the south and the east. In addition to the pilgrims coming from their own local community, the festival at the Batu Medawu Temple is also often attended by people from the Island of Bali.

Batu Medawu Temple is located at Suana village, just west of Semaya hamlet. As one of the sad

kahyangan temples in Klungkung, this temple has a long history in its existence in Bali. The local temple priest explained the name Batu Medawu comes from the word perahu medah batu or a boat dividing rocks.

The origin is reinforced by the story of Nusa Penida Chronicle telling about the story of I Renggan, one of the grandchildren of Dukuh Jumpungan who wanted to conquer Bali with his magical boat. In the story, I Renggan is believed to have the capability of making every land passed through by his boat will become an ocean.

“Bathara Toh Langkir knows such desire, so that he made I Renggan unable to control the boat and fall asleep. The boat was stranded in Manggis, Karangasem and crashed into an island there. Finally, the island split and becomes small islands as we see now around Padangbai,” said Jero Mangku.

The priest added that due to his failure, he tried to return to Nusa Penida through the eastern part of the island. When trying to tether the boat, apparently it was not completely under control. Even, it passed to the beach and split the rock mound in the eastern part of the island. In short, the ruin of I Renggan’s boat was made a place of worship currently known as the Batu Medawu Temple.

The story is further strengthened by a symbol in the form of building resembling a boat’s rear part depicting a boat splitting a rock mound.

This building can be seen in the Batu Medawu Temple, precisely in the Segara Temple. Batu Medawu Temple serves as a holy place to ask for wisdom, unlike the Dalem Ped functioned to invoke strength. (kmb)

Ukraine vaults into unknown after comic elected president

KIEV - Ukraine took a leap into the unknown Monday as comedian Volodymyr Zelensky was elected president on promises of change but just a vague blueprint of what he might do as leader.

Zelensky, whose only previous political role was playing the president in a TV show, trounced incumbent Petro Poroshenko in Sunday’s election in a stinging rebuke to the establishment fueled by anger over war and social injustice.

Ukrainians looked to the future with hope and anxiety after the performer took 73 percent of the vote, according to nearly complete official results.

The star of the sitcom “Servant of the People”, now in its third season, has vowed to stick to the pro-European course set out by his predecessor.

But he has also said he will try to improve ties with arch-enemy Russia.

On the streets of Kiev, many praised honest elections and a peaceful transfer of power after popular uprisings of 2004 and 2014.

“People showed that they want change,” 28-year-old Karina told

AFP. “We had the most honest polls in the history of Ukraine,” she added, praising Poroshenko for conceding defeat soon after exit polls were published.

Zelensky -- who at 41 will be Ukraine’s youngest ever president -- presented a vague manifesto and one of his campaign slogans was, “No promises. No apologies”.

He shunned traditional campaign rallies, instead performing comedy gigs, and implied he would use the same unorthodox style to run the country of 45 million dependent on international aid.

It remained unclear Monday who would fill top positions, including the role of prime minister.

gratulate him on his landslide win.

Outgoing Poroshenko said he stood ready to help his successor, despite a bitter campaign.

Sri Lanka blames Islamists for Easter attacks as death toll hits 290

COLOMBO - Sri Lanka said Monday it believed a local Islamist extremist group was behind deadly suicide bomb blasts that killed nearly 300 people as it announced a national state of emergency beginning midnight.

Government spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said investigators were looking at whether the National Thowheeth Jama’ath (NTJ) group had “international support” for the deadly Easter Sunday attacks on churches and luxury hotels.

Wary of stirring ethnic and religious tensions, officials have provided few details about 24 people arrested since the attacks.

Not much is known about the NTJ, but documents seen by AFP show Sri Lanka’s police chief issued a warning on April 11, saying a “foreign intelligence agency” had reported the group was planning attacks on churches and the Indian high commission.

The group has previously been linked to the vandalising of Buddhist statues.

The death toll from Sunday’s attacks rose dramatically Monday to 290 -- including dozens of foreigners -- in the country’s worst attacks for over a decade.

More than 500 people were injured in the assault that saw suicide bombers hit three high-end hotels popular with foreign tourists, and three churches, unleashing carnage in Colombo and beyond.

Two additional blasts were triggered as security forces carried out raids searching for suspects.

As tension remained high, police on Monday said they had found 87 bomb detonators -- 12 of them scattered on the ground at a bus station and another 75 in a nearby garbage dump.

- State of emergency -

The president’s office said a state of emergency “limited to

counter terrorism regulations only” would be introduced from midnight Monday (1830 GMT).

This is being done to allow the police and the three forces to ensure public security,” the statement said, referring to the army, navy and air force.

The government information department said a new curfew would run from 8:00 pm (1430 GMT) on Monday until 4:00 am on Tuesday.

The US State Department, meanwhile, warned of further attacks in a revised travel advisory, urging increased caution and adding: “Terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Sri Lanka.”

The attacks were the worst ever carried out against Sri Lanka’s small Christian minority, who make up just seven percent of the 21 million population.

At least 37 foreigners were among the dead, citizens of India, Britain, Turkey, Australia, Japan and Portugal, as well as a dual USBritish passport holder.

The churches targeted included St Sebastian’s in Negombo, north of the capital, which was surrounded by security forces on Monday.

Dozens of people were killed at the church, including friends of 16-year-old Primasha Fernando, who was at her home nearby when the suicide bomber struck.

“When I got to the church there were people crying and screaming,” she told AFP. “I saw bodies everywhere,” she added in tears. “I saw parents carrying their dead babies. I saw dead people who had hair but didn’t have faces anymore.”

“Hands and legs were separate from bodies. There was blood everywhere too. The smell was so strong it made me feel sick.”

House speaker condoles deaths of 54 election officers

JAKARTA - House Speaker Bambang Soesatyo has condoled the deaths of 54 officers of polling stations (KPPS) and 10 policemen during the simultaneous 2019 legislative and presidential elections.

“I convey my deepest condolences to the victims and their families.

Their sacrifice in upholding democracy in Indonesia will not be in vain,” Soesatyo said in a statement here Monday.

He appealed to the government to compensate the families of those who lost their lives.

The senior Golkar politician also urged local administrations to provide free medical services to election officers, police and military personnel, who fell ill during election duty.

“In fact, from the onset, they should have been covered with life and medical insurances. Families of the officers who are either sick or dead should have been helped by the State,” he added.

“The election system is complex and polling stations located in regions with a difficult terrain can result in exhaustion and physical pressures that are unavoidable. Organizing an election can be timeconsuming and can even claim lives,” he remarked.

While the duration of the campaign was very long, the election process itself was complicated, and the field officers were not covered by any insurance schemes, he noted.

The government should learn a lesson from this year’s elections and make a note for the future, he said.

The public would like to see a better-organized election the next time, and this necessitates a change in the system, he stated. The changes must be carried out from top to bottom and safety of field officers must be made a priority, he added.

Meanwhile, reelection will be held in the provinces of Banten, East Java, South Sulawesi, West Sumatra, Jambi, and Papua, among others.

These were due to several factors which included delayed delivery of election logistics, natural disasters, or cases of poll violations.

The House Speaker appealed to the KPU, local KPUs (KPUD), and the Election Supervisory Board (Bawasu) to ensure that revoting is conducted free of any violations and lapses.

“The KPU, KPUD, and Bawaslu must ensure that no further violations or errors occur during revoting,” he said in a statement on Monday.

He asked the KPU to examine issues that arose during the 2019 simultaneous legislative and presidential elections and ensure that the poll results were based on the principles of free and fair elections.

Indonesia held the world’s biggest and most complicated single-day vote on April 17, 2019, at some 810 thousand polling stations across its 34 provinces and overseas.

A Malaysian woman has reportedly been cleared of murdering her Indonesian maid, who was allegedly tortured and forced to sleep outside with a dog, with activists Monday criticising the “shocking” decision.

Adelina Sau died in February last year after being found outside her employer’s home on the northern Malaysian island of Penang, with her head and face swollen and covered in wounds.

Many Indonesian maids work in more affluent Malaysia and tales of abuse are common, but the horrific nature of Sau’s case generated headlines and sparked diplomatic tensions between the neighbours.

Her employer, S. Ambika, was charged with murder -- an offence that carries a mandatory death sentence in Malaysia -- shortly after the 21-year-old was rescued and died in hospital.

But the High Court in Penang

dropped the murder charge against her last week, local media reported, without saying why.

Prominent Malaysian human rights lawyer Eric Paulsen called the decision “shocking and unacceptable”.

“This was one of the most public and harrowing abuse cases ever recorded and yet the attorneygeneral’s chambers somehow saw fit to drop the charge,” Paulsen, a member of the ASEAN Intergov-

ernmental Commission on Human Rights, told AFP. Steven Sim, an MP from the area where Sau died, said the court decision was “as tragic as the death of Adelina”. Sim said he had contacted the attorney-general, Tommy Thomas, who had vowed to look into the case.

In Indonesia, Wahyu Susilo, executive director of NGO Migrant Care, condemned the acquittal and described it as “far from justice”.

He said the employer may have been cleared due to a failure to get key witnesses, such as Sau’s parents, to testify at the trial, and called on Jakarta to lodge a protest.

Her murder caused anger in Indonesia, with the foreign minister branding it unacceptable.

Allegations of maid abuse, ranging from overwork to beatings and sex attacks, are a regular diplomatic flashpoint between the Southeast Asian neighbours. (afp)

MONACO - He may have once been thrown out of the US Open for a misogynistic attack on a female umpire and indulged in a blistering rant at tennis’s NextGen, but Fabio Fognini insists his bad boy image is now a thing of the past.

“I have everything in my life.

I’m healthy, I have a baby, I have a wife,” said the 31-year-old Italian whose recently discovered maturity off the court has now been mirrored on it with a maiden Masters title secured in Monte Carlo on Sunday.

Liverpool lead again as Man Utd, Arsenal falter in top four chase

Liverpool moved back top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win at Cardiff, but Manchester United and Arsenal did little for their chances of Champions League qualification for next season in shock defeats to Everton and Crystal Palace respectively on Sunday.

United were thrashed 4-0 at Everton to continue a miserable run of six defeats from their last eight games.

Arsenal remain fourth, but failed to open up a fivepoint lead over United as Crystal Palace became the first visiting side to win at the Emirates in the Premier League since Manchester City on the opening weekend of the campaign with an impressive 3-2 victory.

Liverpool suffered no such slip ups to move two points ahead of Manchester City, who still have a game in hand, at the top. Jurgen Klopp’s men have now won their last nine games in all competitions, to also set up a Champions League semi-final against Barcelona.

“It’s really massive. We spoke a lot about this game, how special it is, how special the situation is for the opponent,” said Klopp, who bemoaned the dry state of Cardiff’s pitch under baking temperatures. “It was not a game for playing around. It was a battle of will, who wants it more.”

But in keeping with recent weeks, Klopp could not relax until late on as Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah missed big chances to give the visitors a firsthalf lead.

Georginio Wijnaldum finally broke the deadlock in emphatic fashion with a thumping finish from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner just before the hour mark.

Liverpool lead again as Man Utd, Arsenal falter in top four chase

Liverpool moved back top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win at Cardiff, but Manchester United and Arsenal did little for their chances of Champions League qualification for next season in shock defeats to Everton and Crystal Palace respectively on Sunday.

United were thrashed 4-0 at Everton to continue a miserable run of six defeats from their last eight games.

Arsenal remain fourth, but failed to open up a fivepoint lead over United as Crystal Palace became the first visiting side to win at the Emirates in the Premier League since Manchester City on the opening weekend of the campaign with an impressive 3-2 victory.

Liverpool suffered no such slip ups to move two points ahead of Manchester City, who still have a game in hand, at the top. Jurgen Klopp’s men have now won their last nine games in all competitions, to also set up a Champions League semi-final against Barcelona.

“It’s really massive. We spoke a lot about this game, how special it is, how special the situation is for the opponent,” said Klopp, who bemoaned the dry state of Cardiff’s pitch under baking temperatures. “It was not a game for playing around. It was a battle of will, who wants it more.”

But in keeping with recent weeks, Klopp could not relax until late on as Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah missed big chances to give the visitors a firsthalf lead.

Georginio Wijnaldum finally broke the deadlock in emphatic fashion with a thumping finish from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner just before the hour mark.

Bad boy to model family man: Fognini ‘has everything now’

MONACO - He may have once been thrown out of the US Open for a misogynistic attack on a female umpire and indulged in a blistering rant at tennis’s NextGen, but Fabio Fognini insists his bad boy image is now a thing of the past.

“I have everything in my life.

I’m healthy, I have a baby, I have a wife,” said the 31-year-old Italian whose recently discovered maturity off the court has now been mirrored on it with a maiden Masters title secured in Monte Carlo on Sunday.

The player, born just over the border on the Italian Mediterranean coastline, beat Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-4 in the millionaires’ playground to lift his first Masters trophy.

LOS ANGELES - The Boston Celtics swept their way past Indiana, while the Golden State and Toronto registered road victories over Orlando and the Los Angeles Clippers to take commanding leads in their first round playoff series on Sunday.

Gordon Hayward scored a teamhigh 20 points as the Celtics defeated Indiana 110-106 on Sunday to complete a first-round NBA playoff sweep of the host Pacers.

Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson steered the Warriors to victory over the Clippers 113-105, and Kawhi Leonard put on a show as the Raptors routed Orlando 107-85, putting division winners Golden State and Toronto up 3-1 in their series and on the brink of advancing to the next round.

Here’s the deal for the Magic and the Clippers. There have been 11 teams to successfully rally from a 3-1 series deficit in a best-ofseven series, and of those, only three pulled it off by winning a game seven on the road which is what they would have to do.

After winning both games in Los Angeles, the Warriors can wrap things up in game five on Wednesday in Oakland.

Thompson scored 27 of his 32 points in the first half for the Warriors. Stephen Curry had an off night shooting 3-for-14, including 1-of-9 from 3-point range, and finishing with 12 points.

Ukraine vaults into unknown after comic elected president

KIEV - Ukraine took a leap into the unknown Monday as comedian Volodymyr Zelensky was elected president on promises of change but just a vague blueprint of what he might do as leader.

Zelensky, whose only previous political role was playing the president in a TV show, trounced incumbent Petro Poroshenko in Sunday’s election in a stinging rebuke to the establishment fueled by anger over war and social injustice.

Ukrainians looked to the future with hope and anxiety after the performer took 73 percent of the vote, according to nearly complete official results.

The star of the sitcom “Servant of the People”, now in its third season, has vowed to stick to the pro-European course set out by his predecessor.

But he has also said he will try to improve ties with arch-enemy Russia.

On the streets of Kiev, many praised honest elections and a peaceful transfer of power after popular uprisings of 2004 and 2014.

“People showed that they want change,” 28-year-old Karina told

AFP. “We had the most honest polls in the history of Ukraine,” she added, praising Poroshenko for conceding defeat soon after exit polls were published.

Zelensky -- who at 41 will be Ukraine’s youngest ever president -- presented a vague manifesto and one of his campaign slogans was, “No promises. No apologies”.

He shunned traditional campaign rallies, instead performing comedy gigs, and implied he would use the same unorthodox style to run the country of 45 million dependent on international aid.

It remained unclear Monday who would fill top positions, including the role of prime minister.

- Russia sees ‘chance’ -

US President Donald Trump and French leader Emmanuel Macron called the political novice to con-

gratulate him on his landslide win.

“Allow us to express our appreciation for the strong attachment to democracy and the rule of law that the people of Ukraine have demonstrated,” EU Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission head JeanClaude Juncker said in a joint letter to Zelensky.

Outgoing Poroshenko said he stood ready to help his successor, despite a bitter campaign.

Russia -- which Kiev and the West accuse of fuelling a smouldering separatist conflict in Ukraine’s industrial east -- said it saw an opportunity with the new leader.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said there was “a chance” to improve ties.

Sri Lanka blames Islamists for Easter attacks as death toll hits 290

COLOMBO - Sri Lanka said Monday it believed a local Islamist extremist group was behind deadly suicide bomb blasts that killed nearly 300 people as it announced a national state of emergency beginning midnight.

Government spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said investigators were looking at whether the National Thowheeth Jama’ath (NTJ) group had “international support” for the deadly Easter Sunday attacks on churches and luxury hotels.

Wary of stirring ethnic and religious tensions, officials have provided few details about 24 people arrested since the attacks.

Not much is known about the NTJ, but documents seen by AFP show Sri Lanka’s police chief issued a warning on April 11, saying a “foreign intelligence agency” had reported the group was planning attacks on churches and the Indian high commission.

The group has previously been linked to the vandalising of Buddhist statues.

The death toll from Sunday’s attacks rose dramatically Monday to 290 -- including dozens of foreigners -- in the country’s worst attacks for over a decade.

More than 500 people were injured in the assault that saw suicide bombers hit three high-end hotels popular with foreign tourists, and three churches, unleashing carnage in Colombo and beyond.

Two additional blasts were triggered as security forces carried out raids searching for suspects.

As tension remained high, police on Monday said they had found 87 bomb detonators -- 12 of them scattered on the ground at a bus station and another 75 in a nearby garbage dump.

- State of emergency -

The president’s office said a state of emergency “limited to

counter terrorism regulations only” would be introduced from midnight Monday (1830 GMT).

This is being done to allow the police and the three forces to ensure public security,” the statement said, referring to the army, navy and air force.

The government information department said a new curfew would run from 8:00 pm (1430 GMT) on Monday until 4:00 am on Tuesday.

The US State Department, meanwhile, warned of further attacks in a revised travel advisory, urging increased caution and adding: “Terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Sri Lanka.”

The attacks were the worst ever carried out against Sri Lanka’s small Christian minority, who make up just seven percent of the 21 million population.

At least 37 foreigners were among the dead, citizens of India, Britain, Turkey, Australia, Japan and Portugal, as well as a dual USBritish passport holder.

The churches targeted included St Sebastian’s in Negombo, north of the capital, which was surrounded by security forces on Monday.

Dozens of people were killed at the church, including friends of 16-year-old Primasha Fernando, who was at her home nearby when the suicide bomber struck.

“When I got to the church there were people crying and screaming,” she told AFP. “I saw bodies everywhere,” she added in tears. “I saw parents carrying their dead babies. I saw dead people who had hair but didn’t have faces anymore.”

“Hands and legs were separate from bodies. There was blood everywhere too. The smell was so strong it made me feel sick.”

The church’s roof was largely blown out and pews splintered. The floor was strewn with roof tiles and shards of glass. (afp)

House speaker condoles deaths of 54 election officers

JAKARTA - House Speaker Bambang Soesatyo has condoled the deaths of 54 officers of polling stations (KPPS) and 10 policemen during the simultaneous 2019 legislative and presidential elections.

“I convey my deepest condolences to the victims and their families.

Their sacrifice in upholding democracy in Indonesia will not be in vain,” Soesatyo said in a statement here Monday.

He appealed to the government to compensate the families of those who lost their lives.

The senior Golkar politician also urged local administrations to provide free medical services to election officers, police and military personnel, who fell ill during election duty.

“In fact, from the onset, they should have been covered with life and medical insurances. Families of the officers who are either sick or dead should have been helped by the State,” he added.

“The election system is complex and polling stations located in regions with a difficult terrain can result in exhaustion and physical pressures that are unavoidable. Organizing an election can be timeconsuming and can even claim lives,” he remarked.

While the duration of the campaign was very long, the election process itself was complicated, and the field officers were not covered by any insurance schemes, he noted.

The government should learn a lesson from this year’s elections and make a note for the future, he said.

The public would like to see a better-organized election the next time, and this necessitates a change in the system, he stated. The changes must be carried out from top to bottom and safety of field officers must be made a priority, he added.

Meanwhile, reelection will be held in the provinces of Banten, East Java, South Sulawesi, West Sumatra, Jambi, and Papua, among others.

These were due to several factors which included delayed delivery of election logistics, natural disasters, or cases of poll violations.

The House Speaker appealed to the KPU, local KPUs (KPUD), and the Election Supervisory Board (Bawasu) to ensure that revoting is conducted free of any violations and lapses.

“The KPU, KPUD, and Bawaslu must ensure that no further violations or errors occur during revoting,” he said in a statement on Monday.

He asked the KPU to examine issues that arose during the 2019 simultaneous legislative and presidential elections and ensure that the poll results were based on the principles of free and fair elections.

Indonesia held the world’s biggest and most complicated single-day vote on April 17, 2019, at some 810 thousand polling stations across its 34 provinces and overseas.

The count of eligible voters crossed 192 million, and the voter turnout was expected to surpass 80 percent. (ant)

Anger as Malaysian cleared of murdering Indonesian maid

A Malaysian woman has reportedly been cleared of murdering her Indonesian maid, who was allegedly tortured and forced to sleep outside with a dog, with activists Monday criticising the “shocking” decision.

Adelina Sau died in February last year after being found outside her employer’s home on the northern Malaysian island of Penang, with her head and face swollen and covered in wounds.

Many Indonesian maids work in more affluent Malaysia and tales of abuse are common, but the horrific nature of Sau’s case generated headlines and sparked diplomatic tensions between the neighbours.

Her employer, S. Ambika, was charged with murder -- an offence that carries a mandatory death sentence in Malaysia -- shortly after the 21-year-old was rescued and died in hospital.

But the High Court in Penang

dropped the murder charge against her last week, local media reported, without saying why.

Prominent Malaysian human rights lawyer Eric Paulsen called the decision “shocking and unacceptable”.

“This was one of the most public and harrowing abuse cases ever recorded and yet the attorneygeneral’s chambers somehow saw fit to drop the charge,” Paulsen, a member of the ASEAN Intergov-

ernmental Commission on Human Rights, told AFP. Steven Sim, an MP from the area where Sau died, said the court decision was “as tragic as the death of Adelina”. Sim said he had contacted the attorney-general, Tommy Thomas, who had vowed to look into the case.

In Indonesia, Wahyu Susilo, executive director of NGO Migrant Care, condemned the acquittal and described it as “far from justice”.

He said the employer may have been cleared due to a failure to get key witnesses, such as Sau’s parents, to testify at the trial, and called on Jakarta to lodge a protest.

Her murder caused anger in Indonesia, with the foreign minister branding it unacceptable.

Allegations of maid abuse, ranging from overwork to beatings and sex attacks, are a regular diplomatic flashpoint between the Southeast Asian neighbours. (afp)

Dubai arena is latest project unveiled despite weaker growth

DUBAI - This week, Dubai unveiled its latest megaproject: A stadium in the heart of a super luxe shopping and dining destination.

The arena, which will host sports events and concerts, is located in a leisure retail and residential destination called City Walk, which itself is new and was developed by Meraas, a company owned by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

It’s just one in a pipeline of projects the emirate is churning out in the lead-up to next year’s World Expo in Dubai, despite an economic slowdown and concerns that an oversupply is weighing down real estate prices.

“Property is a cyclical business and we are in a period of a soft market,” said Craig Plumb, head of research in the Middle East for JLL, a real estate and investment management firm.

Speaking at a real estate exhibition in Abu Dhabi, he noted that retail rents are also falling because landlords are responding to tougher market conditions by being much more flexible in their deals.

Dubai’s major developers, like Meraas, Emaar and Nakheel, have plans for new cities, neighborhoods, malls, skyscrapers and fantastical concepts like floating homes with floor-to-ceiling glass rooms submerged in the waters off the emirate’s coast.

The projects represent Dubai’s ambitions to grow as a tourism destination and financial hub, but the sheer scale of the developments is outstripping current demand.

Already, real estate prices across the United Arab Emirates have fallen since oil prices began their slide in 2014. A boost in oil prices last year appeared to have little effect on Dubai’s bellwether

real estate market.

Real estate prices in Downtown Dubai fell by as much as 16% last year, according to a report by property agent Savills.

Challenges surrounding a supply and demand mismatch are expected to continue through the year, the report said.

Statistics released this week

by Dubai’s government show that gross domestic product grew by 1.9% last year, a steady decline year-on-year since 2014 when growth clocked in at 4.6%.

Despite the economic slowdown, major Dubai developers show no signs of slowing down their sprawling projects ahead of next year’s Expo.

Nearly 10,000 residential units in Dubai were completed in the first quarter of 2019, according to JLL. Dubai predicts that the sixmonth-long World Fair, which runs from October 2020 to April 2021, will attract 25 million visits, although it is unclear how many of those will be visitors from outside Dubai.

A study by Ernst & Young forecast that Expo 2020 will contribute around $6 billion to the UAE’s economy during the sixmonth-long duration of the fair.

That figure is largely drawn from government data and EY stated in its report that it had not sought to establish the reliability of the sources it used nor had it verified the information provided to prepare the report. The report was commissioned by Dubai’s Expo organizers.

Peak of the temple festival or piodalan at Batu Medawu Temple, Nusa Penida, took place on January 30. After holding the bhakti penganyar, the series of the temple festival was closed on Saturday (Feb. 2). There is an interesting myth about the establishment of the temple belonging to the sad kahyangan in Klungkung which is related to the failure of Dukuh Jumpungan against Batara Toh Langkir, the ruler of mainland Bali.

Chairperson of the Ritual Committee, Putu Sujana, stated on Friday (Jan. 2) the piodalan in the sad kahyangan temple falls every six months and coincides with the Buda Kliwon Pahang. Local Hindus seemed enthusiastic about making prayers. Moreover, the Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Suwirta, and his wife also came to say prayers in order that nature and its contents will always be calm and peaceful, in the midst of the current situation increasingly familiar with natural disasters.

This temple has the concept of nyegara gunung or sea-mountainward where there is a combination of land and sea in one form of beauty. At the Batu Medawu Temple, all the pilgrims performed prayers for three times, namely at the Segara, Taman and Penataran Temple.

This temple is supported by half the customary villagers, starting from the customary village of Kutampi Atas to the south and the east. In addition to the pilgrims coming from their own local community, the festival at the Batu Medawu Temple is also often attended by people from the Island of Bali.

Batu Medawu Temple is located at Suana village, just west of Semaya hamlet. As one of the sad

kahyangan temples in Klungkung, this temple has a long history in its existence in Bali. The local temple priest explained the name Batu Medawu comes from the word perahu medah batu or a boat dividing rocks.

The origin is reinforced by the story of Nusa Penida Chronicle telling about the story of I Renggan, one of the grandchildren of Dukuh Jumpungan who wanted to conquer Bali with his magical boat. In the story, I Renggan is believed to have the capability of making every land passed through by his boat will become an ocean.

“Bathara Toh Langkir knows such desire, so that he made I Renggan unable to control the boat and fall asleep. The boat was stranded in Manggis, Karangasem and crashed into an island there. Finally, the island split and becomes small islands as we see now around Padangbai,” said Jero Mangku.

The priest added that due to his failure, he tried to return to Nusa Penida through the eastern part of the island. When trying to tether the boat, apparently it was not completely under control. Even, it passed to the beach and split the rock mound in the eastern part of the island. In short, the ruin of I Renggan’s boat was made a place of worship currently known as the Batu Medawu Temple.

The story is further strengthened by a symbol in the form of building resembling a boat’s rear part depicting a boat splitting a rock mound.

This building can be seen in the Batu Medawu Temple, precisely in the Segara Temple. Batu Medawu Temple serves as a holy place to ask for wisdom, unlike the Dalem Ped functioned to invoke strength. (kmb)

Klungkung exposed to volcanic ashes, BPBD distributes thousands of masks SEMARAPURA - Mount Agung returned to emit volcanic ashes after the eruption on Sunday morning (Apr. 21). Volcanic ashes from the Mount Agung crater spread to a number of districts, including Klungkung. Anticipating the impact on the community, the Klungkung Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) immediately spread masks to residents of Semarapura town on Sunday morning.

Incidentally, around the location of Semarapura town was taking place the car-free day as a regular activity of the local government. Head of the BPBD Klungkung, Putu Widiada, said that his agency took rapid reaction to reduce the impact on health because volcanic ash spread from Mount Agung erupting at 3:21 could cause serious respiratory problems.

“Approximately we distributed 3,000 pieces of masks directly to the public,” said Widiada.

Until 6:30, no more ashes scattered from the direction of Mount Agung were observed. However, the former ashes were still monitored to be hit by vehicles and winds, so that it is quite disturbing to people’s activities. When distributing masks, he also reminded the public to always be vigilant and carry out initial disaster mitigation measures especially for their own families because the activity of Mount Agung is classified to be still high, considering the alert status remains in level III. “We are still anticipating if the alert status of Mount Agung rises.

If there are refugees, the TRC of BPBD Klungkung is ready to prepare everything. We are always in communication with the Rendang Monitoring Post,” said Widiada.

As it is known, Mount Agung returned to erupt with a high column of volcanic ashes as high as 2,000

meters or 5,142 meters above sea level. The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity leaning towards the southwest. The Mount Agung PVMBG Observation Post recorded on a seismogram with maximum amplitude of 25 mm and duration of ± 2 minutes 55 seconds.

The eruption caused thin volcanic ash rain in several places, such as in Karangasem, Bangli and Klungkung districts. Distribution of the ashes depended on the direction of the wind. No casualties and no refugees were reported.

Community activities remain to run normally. Car-free day activities at Puputan Klungkung Square and around the central intersection were normal. The BPBD has distributed thousands of masks to the public.

The alert status of Mount Agung also remains in Advisory (level III).

People, climbers and tourists are prohibited from carrying out activities within a 4-km radius of the summit of Mount Agung crater. Outside this radius is safe. “As the name of active volcano implies, eruption is a normal phenomenon. It won’t be a disaster if the community stays in safe radius. It is no need to worry too much. Simply follow the PVMBG’s recommendations to be in a safe radius,” said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, Head of Center for Data and Information of National Disaster Mitigation Agency in his official release.

People are encouraged to remain calm when hearing information about a volcano erupting. It is no need to panic as it is a natural phenomenon of erupting volcanoes.

Most importantly, the community stays in a safe area according to recommendation of PVMBG. Don’t even approach the crater to document volcanic activities in the crater. It is dangerous. We must live in harmony with volcanic eruptions. (kmb31)

Anger as Malaysian cleared of murdering Indonesian maid

GIANYAR - Three days after the summit of Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh at the Samuan Tiga Bedulu Temple, the procession of siat sampian or sampian war and returning Ida Bhatara Manca was organized on Sunday (Apr. 21).

From the morning, hundreds of pilgrims have filled the temple known as the venue for unification of the sects to the decision on the establishment of customary village and trinity temples in Bali. They prayed while watching the siat sampian procession, baleganjur parade and then escorted the deities (Ida Bhatara Manca) to their respective abiding temple.

The siat sampian was followed by hundreds of parekan and permas. They threw each other and hit with a sampian made from young coconut leaves. Before the peak of siat sampian, permas danced nampyog and continued around the middle courtyard of the temple.

Conversely, the parekan ran around while holding on to each other to form waves and trying to reach the sacred building for three times. This procession was accom-

panied by gamelan music adding to the spirit of parekan and permas to start the siat sampian. After the procession of siat sampian, the deities went round clockwise.

Coordinator of the Samuan Tiga Temple, I Wayan Patera, explained the siat sampian is a battle between two different basic dualism namely the good and bad where the truth will later become the winner. Further, he explained the selection of sampian paraphernalia for the procession because it is the end part of the dangsil offered by the parekan.

In addition, sampian symbolizes the weapon of Lord Wisnu used to fight against adharma or evil on earth.

Interestingly, amid the clockwise procession, a baleganjur parade was organized by involving five customary villages namely the Tengkulak Kelod, Tengkulak Ten-

gah, Tengkulak Kaja, Bedulu and Wanayu Mas. “This parade is an artistic space before the deities or Ida Bhatara Manca prior to returning,” explained Wayan Patera.

The baleganjur parade is expected to give motivation to customary village for a space of creativity while preserving the arts. The next series of Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh ritual was the presentation of bhakti penganyaran by districts and municipality across Bali in turn through Monday (Apr. 29) where Ida Bhatara Manca arrives resumed with melasti procession without going to water springs (ngubeng).

On Tuesday (Apr. 30) all the deities return and the ritual series is closed. Furthermore, on Thursday (May. 5) is organized the pecaruan nyaga-nyaga nyepi karya exorcism rite and day of silence of the rite on Friday (May 5). (kmb35)

KUALA LUMPUR - A Malaysian woman has reportedly been cleared of murdering her Indonesian maid, who was allegedly tortured and forced to sleep outside with a dog, with activists Monday criticising the “shocking” decision.

Adelina Sau died in February last year after being found outside her employer’s home on the northern Malaysian island of Penang, with her head and face swollen and covered in wounds.

Many Indonesian maids work in more affluent Malaysia and tales of abuse are common, but the horrific nature of Sau’s case generated headlines and sparked diplomatic tensions between the neighbours.

Her employer, S. Ambika, was charged with murder -- an offence

that carries a mandatory death sentence in Malaysia -- shortly after the 21-year-old was rescued and died in hospital.

But the High Court in Penang dropped the murder charge against her last week, local media reported, without saying why.

Prominent Malaysian human rights lawyer Eric Paulsen called the decision “shocking and unacceptable”.

“This was one of the most public and harrowing abuse cases ever recorded and yet the attorneygeneral’s chambers somehow saw fit to drop the charge,” Paulsen, a member of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights, told AFP. Steven Sim, an MP from the area where Sau died, said the court

decision was “as tragic as the death of Adelina”.

Sim said he had contacted the attorney-general, Tommy Thomas, who had vowed to look into the case. In Indonesia, Wahyu Susilo, executive director of NGO Migrant Care, condemned the acquittal and described it as “far from justice”.

He said the employer may have been cleared due to a failure to get key witnesses, such as Sau’s parents, to testify at the trial, and called on Jakarta to lodge a protest.

Her murder caused anger in Indonesia, with the foreign minister branding it unacceptable.

Allegations of maid abuse, ranging from overwork to beatings and sex attacks, are a regular diplomatic flashpoint between the Southeast Asian neighbours. (afp)

Warm, dry winds may be straining Antarctica’s Larsen C ice shelf

TURQUOISE pools of snowmelt on the Antarctic Peninsula, including on the Larsen C ice shelf, have recently been forming months after the continent’s peak summer melt. Bursts of warm, dry wind cascading over mountains that run along the peninsula are largely to blame, researchers report April 11 in Geophysical Research Letters. In this March 2016 satellite image, meltwater on part of Larsen C can be seen at the foothills of these mountains, just one case of this type of wind-induced melting.

Eastward-flowing winds sweeping across the Antarctic Peninsula sometimes pick up enough speed to surmount its mountain peaks. As the air rises and chills, its moisture condenses and, in the process, reheats the air. So when the now-dry air comes coursing down the leeway mountainside, it can be a balmy 20° Celsius.

Researchers “have told me they’ve been in a T-shirt” while standing in these winds, says cryospheric scientist Tri Datta of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. Datta and her team compared satellite data collected from 1982 to 2017 with simulations of the peninsula’s ice sheet and atmospheric conditions during the same period. The team found that, since 2015, these winds called foehns have caused a lot of melting on the peninsula, including on Larsen C, as late as May, well into

Antarctica’s autumn. Foehns likely cause 60 percent of the total snowmelt on the northeastern part of the peninsula at that time of year, Datta says.

That’s a problem because meltwater can trickle into crevasses on Larsen C. The water’s own weight wedges the cracks open and may help cause the ice shelf to break off. Late melting can also prevent new snow from replenishing the ice shelf. In 2017, a giant iceberg broke from Larsen C, raising questions about the shelf’s stability and how it may contribute to rising seas.

It’s still unclear what’s driving these foehns and if they’re linked to climate change. And Datta emphasizes that three years is too short to constitute a trend.

A genetic scorecard could predict your risk of being obese

NEW YORK - There’s a new way to predict whether a baby will grow into an obese adult.

Combining the effect of more than 2.1 million genetic variants, researchers have created a genetic predisposition score that they say predicts severe obesity. People with scores in the highest 10 percent weighed, on average, 13 kilograms (about 29 pounds) more than those with the lowest 10 percent of scores, the team reports April 18 in Cell.

The finding may better quantify genes’ roles in obesity than previous prediction scores, but still fails to account for lifestyle, which may

be more important in determining body weight, other researchers say.

Still, the study shows that “your genetics really start to take hold very early in life,” says coauthor Amit Khera, a cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.

Weight differences showed up as early as age 3, and by age 18, those with the highest scores weighed 12.3 kilograms more on average than those with the lowest scores, Khera and his colleagues found.

Some people may have a greater genetic predisposition to obesity, which means they may have to work harder than others to lose weight or to keep from gaining it. A new study says there’s a way to predict who’s most at risk.

harder to maintain a healthy weight than others, he says.

People with the highest scores were 25 times more likely to have severe obesity — a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40 — than those with the lowest scores. BMI is a measurement of body fat based on height and weight. A BMI of 18.5 (calculated as kilograms per meters squared of height) to 24.9 is considered healthy. BMIs 30 and above are considered obese.

The nearly 13-kilogram difference between people dealt a good genetic hand versus those dealt a bad one equals about five BMI points. “Five points is a lot,” Khera says. “That’s what takes you from normal to obese, from obese to severely obese.” High scores were also associated with increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and stroke.

Other scientists are skeptical that the score is an accurate predictor of obesity risk.

“I’m not convinced at all,” says Ruth Loos, a genetic epidemiologist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.

Genes are responsible for about half of people’s susceptibility to obesity, but lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise are equally or even more important, she says. “Even if you have a genetic score that perfectly

captures that 50 percent of genetics, you still will not be able to predict anyone’s future risk of obesity.”

Without figuring in the lifestyle factors, “you will never be accurate.”

Together, the 2.1 million genetic variants used in the study account for less than 10 percent of genes’ contribution to obesity, making the score a blunt tool that could lead to inaccurate predictions, Loos says.

For instance, the scores of 3,722 people in the Framingham Offspring study group — one group of people the researchers used to test their genetic score — suggested that 371 of the highest scorers would become severely obese. But only 58 of them did. “The score said bluntly, if you’re in the top decile you’ll become severely obese,” Loos says.

“So you basically scared people who were not supposed to be scared.”

On the flip side, the score would have failed to warn 171 of the 229 severely obese people in the Framingham group that they would gain so much weight, she says. “If you simply use the score and don’t account for lifestyle, you’ll be wrong many times.”

Khera and colleagues hope the score will help erase the stigma associated with obesity and shed some light on the biology behind the condition. Although people with high genetic risks may have

a harder time avoiding weight gain or losing weight, they also might be the people who benefit most from weight-control drugs or other measures, Khera says.

Endocrinologist and geneticist Mark Goodarzi of Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles worries that giving people a prediction of looming obesity could backfire.

That’s already happened in at least one study. People who were warned that their genes predisposed them to obesity ate more after learning of the propensity, he says. “I think they figured, ‘I’m doomed. I’m going to be obese anyway. Why fight it?’” Other studies have showed no change in people’s behavior after learning their genetic risks, he says.

It is not clear how doctors might use the score in treating patients, says A. Cecile Janssens, an epidemiologist at Emory University in Atlanta. “You should at least say in the discussion, ‘If we identify the people in the highest 10 percent, we can do X, Y and Z with these people, which we wouldn’t do with everyone else,’” she says. And instead of focusing on severe obesity, it might be more useful to be able to predict whether overweight people might become obese in order to prevent that transition. “You can [more] easily lose a few pounds than 30 or 40 pounds.” (net)

When shooting black and white photos with a digital camera, it is still recommended to set the camera in color mode. Digital cameras produce a wider range of tones in color mode because in this mode the sensor takes data from three channels - red, green and blue or RGB. Black and white photos generated from processing color photos using a photo editor on a computer will

tend to have better quality because BW mode in the camera does not offer many choices. Similarly, use RAW mode. When using RAW and BW modes together in the camera, the display on the camera’s LCD is of course black and white, but actually has no effect on RAW files (still colored). When you apply RAW and JPEG format, you will even obtain extra flexibilities.

The best light

Keep in mind that noise or small white spots will appear more prominent in black and white photos than in color photos. On that account, try to use the lowest possible ISO in the camera. For example, apply ISO 50 or ISO 100. By using this low ISO, it will be very helpful when the photos are processed later to minimize the occurrence

of noise.

If the majority of photographers generally seem ‘allergic’ to take pictures when the atmosphere is cloudy, this does not happen to those liking black and white photography. Conversely, cloudy conditions are considered the best time to take black and white photos. The presence of cloudy sky will create lower contrast and this is the best time to make black and white photos. Even though on the cloudy sky color will look gray, for example, of course it doesn’t need to be taken care of because in black and white photos it won’t be too visible.

In shooting black and white photos, primarily when shooting outdoors, photographers are required to be able to highlight the shape of the object being photographed

maximally. For that purpose, side lighting is the best light because the fall of shadow becomes very interesting. This natural side lighting can generally be obtained in the morning or evening, so the time for shooting is ideally done in the morning or evening.

MCB short circuit ensured to have caused fire at airport domestic terminal

From the results of the crime scene investigation, Chief of Denpasar Police, Ruddi Setiawan, explained the analysis found if the fires were caused by a short circuit in the Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) on panel 02 located in the ATM Area.

A fire arose due to the failure of the MCB on the panel. So, the accumulation of heat generated resulted in sparks and caused fire.

“The short circuit happened in the MCB in accordance with the results of the laboratory testing carried out

Forensic Laboratory of the Denpasar Branch. At first, the fire was in room panel 02 or BBG Panel 02. This was triggered due to MCB failure on the panel, resulting in heat accumulation that burned the MCB cable. “Then, the fire burned the domestic check-in room and the ATM room,” said the police chief when giving a statement on Sunday (Apr. 21).

Meanwhile, General Manager of PT. Angkasa Pura I (Persero) for Ngurah Rai International Airport Branch Office, Haruman Sulaksono, stated that related to the affected

condition of the x-ray device, several units are indeed damaged at this moment. There are four damaged units. However, he said it does not affect the operation and can still be handled. The damaged equipment includes the Wi-Fi access points, ceilings and some electrification in the air handling unit (AHU).

Regarding the damage caused by the fire, he estimated the losses suffered reach IDR 4 billion. For the convenience of passengers, after carrying out the scene investigation, his management has done a massive

Tourism players support legalization of Balinese arrack

DENPASAR - Tourism players support the efforts of the provincial government to legalize the making and distribution of Balinese arrack.

Moreover, the raw material of this arrack can be a bartender attraction incidentally always becomes an attraction for tourists.

Chairperson of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Denpasar Chapter, Ida Bagus Gede Sidharta Putra, at the X9 Factor Bartender Challenge 2019 on Saturday (Apr. 20) said to agree that Balinese arrack is legalized because this traditional beverage remains to be considered

a second class.

According to him, the Balinese arrack needs to be featured because this traditional beverage involves business players of the MSME scale or local market. So, if this traditional beverage is taken up it will certainly have an impact on the people’s economy.

Balinese arrack producers are spread in several regions and they are very skilled because the distillation is still done traditionally.

He also considered that Balinese arrack still needs to be legalized because there is still mixing with other ingredients. “On that account,

it is necessary to look for the right arrack formula, there should be no mixture with methanol,” he advised.

The opportunity for Balinese arrack to enter tourism industry is also widely open considering that getting 300 percent of imported beverages is very expensive. Balinese arrack can be combined so that it becomes a substitute beverage.

“Through professional circles, Balinese arrack can be taken advantage as a mixture of beverages.

Moreover, in foreign countries there is sake, why can’t Bali introduce this arrack?” he joked.

Perrie Edwards: Little Mix star felt ‘so alone’ after ‘overwhelming’ panic attacks

LOS ANGELES - Little Mix star Perrie Edwards has revealed she struggles with anxiety and panic attacks, opening up to her fans to help others going through similar experiences.

The singer said her first panic attack a few years ago was “so intense and overwhelming” that she thought she was having a heart attack. In an emotional post on Instagram, Edwards said that at her lowest, she did not want to leave the house.

She also revealed she had been to therapy sessions and that reducing her time on social media had helped. “When I first started to feel the effects of anxiety I thought I was losing my mind and it terrified me,” she said.

“I felt so alone and like I was the first person in the world to ever experience it.”

She added: “The first panic

attack was so intense and overwhelming. I felt like I was having a heart attack - I was so scared and confused and had no idea what was happening to me.

“I’m not sure what triggered that first one but it soon spiralled and I found myself in a really dark place, feeling alone and scared.”

Edwards, who rose to fame when Little Mix became the first group to win X Factor in 2011, went on to explain that while she had lots of friends and family around her, “I couldn’t explain to them what was happening to me or why”.

She continued: “It affected me so badly that I didn’t even want

to leave the house. I would step foot out the door and feel the overwhelming need to go straight back inside. It completely took over my life.”

The 25-year-old said the physical attacks have now stopped “but unfortunately the anxiety lives on”.

She said that while she has sometimes felt “like a prisoner in my own head”, realising she is not alone has helped. (net)

CALIFORNIA - Ingraham, one of Fox News’ highest-profile anchors and who has her own conservative talk show, The Ingraham Angle, sarcastically described the musician as “this dear artist”.

She was discussing Hussle’s 2016 hit with fellow rapper YG, FDT, which includes the chorus “f*** Donald Trump”.

Ingraham called the line about Mr Trump a “very creative refrain”,

Bieber posted on Instagram on Thursday demanded her sacking, describing her behaviour as “absolutely disgusting”.

Indonesia’s presidential challenger on Friday slammed pollsters as untrustworthy and said they should move to Antarctica so they could “lie to the penguins”, as he refused to concede defeat in this week’s election.

Firebrand ex-general Prabowo Subianto has rejected a dozen so-called quick counts that say Indonesian president Joko Widodo was re-elected Wednesday by a comfortable margin.

The counts, which are samples conducted by pollsters, have been reliable indicators in past elections.

Official results are not due until

next month.

Subianto -- pilloried online for his refusal to concede -- ratcheted up the rhetoric Friday, after claiming he was the Southeast Asian nation’s new president.

“The people of Indonesia don’t trust you,” he thundered to around a thousand supporters outside his home in the capital Jakarta. “Maybe

you can move to Antarctica. You can lie to the penguins.”

Friday’s crowd size was small for a city that has seen huge street protests in the past.

Subianto portrayed himself as a man of the people during the heated presidential campaign, despite his immense wealth and ties to Indonesia’s corrupt Suharto dictatorship,

which collapsed in 1998.

“This is a victory of the people.

The Indonesian people have risen,” he told the crowd. “The Indonesian people don’t want to be cheated anymore.”

On Thursday evening, Widodo said that he had received phone calls from world leaders to congratulate him on the country’s polls, but added that he would await final results before formally declaring victory. Subianto has alleged voter fraud and warned he would chal-

lenge the results in court.

He did the same, unsuccessfully, after losing to Widodo in 2014 and there is little to suggest Subianto will win this latest fight.
