Alan Cumming’s 1-man ‘Macbeth’ stunning Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — It’s hard enough for a couple to simulate sex onstage in front of 1,000 people. Now put them in a Shakespeare tragedy. OK, now to make it really hard: Remove one of the actors.

That’s what you get in one of many astounding scenes at the new Broadway version of “Macbeth” — all the major roles are being done by Alan Cumming, which means a bed scene in which his Lady Macbeth seduces her husband while persuading him to kill the king.

In the scene, Cumming, who won a 1998 Tony Award in Sam Mendes’ revival of “Cabaret,” redefines the notion of self-love. Half-dressed, he flips on a bed multiple times to alternate the parts, purring suggestively as the lady and then more lustful as the man. “Screw your courage to the sticking-place,” she teases him.

If it’s not clear by now, what Cumming is doing at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre is delivering a tour-de-force that redefines the term.

In a truncated version of the play that clocks in at less than two hours, Cumming is both Macbeths, the three witches, Macduff, Duncan, Malcolm, Banquo and a half dozen others. Plus, he not only plays all the major Shakespeare roles, he also does the whole thing as a deranged mental patient.

The show, directed by John Tiffany and Andrew Goldberg, has had sold-out runs at both the National Theatre of Scotland and the Lincoln Center Festival last year. It has matured since the festival,

now sporting more special effects, more blood and a stronger attempt to differentiate the various voices of the play, which had been a problem before.

While there is no doubt about Cumming’s ability — he cowers, he acts menacing, he strips down, he leaps in and out of a full bathtub and smears himself in gore — there is a feeling that while this is an act of Olympic skill, it’s also partly a freak show.

Cumming at first appears as a patient who has undergone some sort of trauma as he’s being processed into a white-tiled mental hospital. The plot of “Macbeth” is sort of a schizophrenic nightmare.

Using a mental patient as the framing device makes intuitive sense for “Macbeth” since the play is filled with visions — “Is this a dagger which I see before me?” — and references to addled brains.

A small tornado happened on Monday, April 22, in Pulau Ayu and Pulau Adi Street, Denpasar. Because of the disaster, some houses were damaged and two shrined belong to Made Dwi Arya and another one in Puala Adi Street were collapsed.

One of the locals, Putu Suadnyana said that the tornado happened at 4 pm. It was happened suddenly and brief. There was no heavy rain but suddenly very strong wind was coming from the east and west and the same time and forming a small tornado. “At that time, a few of the roofs were shattered,” he added.

Meanwhile, Made Dwi Aryana said that when the tornado came, all of the family

members directly took cover inside the house. They were terrified because the wind was very strong and they were afraid thing would fall on them. “There was a huge sound and when we checked it, the shrines were collapsed,” he said.

The street is filled with damage roofs and the locals in the area are started to clean it. The damage houses are being fixed by the owners. “We fix it right away

because we afraid there will be rain in the next few days,” said the locals in the area.

The Head of Denpasar Disaster handling department (BPBD) Made Sudana Satigraha said that the department still determining the loss after the disaster.

“We still carry out detail inspection so we cannot determine the damage yet,” he added.(kmb21)

A robbery case occurred again in the jurisdiction of Denpasar Metro Police.

The house belonging to a retired official of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Ngurah Gede, 80, on Jalan Suli No. 39 Denpasar was broken in by a robber, Thursday dawn (Apr 18). The perpetrator pointed a knife on the victim. As a result, a number of valuables belonging to the victim could be depleted. Meanwhile, the case had been reported to Denpasar Metro Police to be followed up.

Information at police station on Sunday (Apr 21) said the robbery was committed by a perpetrator lasting fairly fast because only in a few minutes it managed to deplete the properties of the victim. “At that time, the victim was sleeping with his family. Suddenly the victim saw a stranger at his home at 03:00 a.m.,” said a source at police station last Sunday.

Once the action was caught, the perpetrator pointed a knife to the victim. The perpetrator without a facial veil threatened the victim. If giving a resistance, the perpetrator did not hesitate to kill him. Under the threat with a knife, the victim could not do much. “The victim was asked to show where his valuables were stored,” he said while asking not to publish his name.

With fear, the victim then showed where his valuables were kept. The perpetrator took all the valuables of victim at ease such as earrings,

ring and others. Not only that, the perpetrator also looted his cash worth IDR 3,700,000. “The total losses suffered by the victim valued at IDR 10 million. Meanwhile, this case had been reported on Saturday (Apr 20) to Denpasar Metro Police,” he said.

Having received the report on the robbery action, police officers immediately came down to location to investigate the crime scene. Allegedly, the perpetrator entered the victim’s house by breaking in the window on the second floor.

After getting in, the perpetrator went down to the first floor. Well, at that time the victim caught the perpetrator so that the latter then pointed a knife.

“It’s not a robbery, but a thief,” said Chief of Criminal Detective Unit of Denpasar Metro Police, Ambariyadi Wijaya, when asked for his confirmation last Sunday. (kmb21)

Lured by cheap house program

Four poor people deceived by broker Amlapura (Bali Post)—

Lured to get cheap home program (PRM), four victims of poor people immediately submitted the requested pre-payment by perpetrator alleged to be a broker of the program in 2010.

Unfortunately, the promised affordable housing has not been realized so far. Afterward, the four poor people from Ujung Desa hamlet realized to have been deceived. Through hamlet chief named Madsin, 50, the four victims reported the case to Karangasem Police.

Spokesperson of Karangasem Police, Ketut Pasek Redita, with permission from Karangasem Police Chief, Sunday (Apr 21), confirmed in Karangasem if the officers had received the report of victims. As being delivered, Lalu Madsin, the hamlet chief of Ujung Desa Muslim, had received the complaint from residents on Friday afternoon (Apr 19). The four victims deceived by the broker of cheap home program were Mahmudin, 33, farmer (Sasak ethnic); Muhidin, 37; Muh Suhami, 37, farmer; and Lalu Mahrum, 23.

The four people were categorized to be poor with livelihood as farmer or fisherman and in 2010 were visited the perpetrator with

initial Pa, 60, a Javanese living on Jalan Pesagi Ujung Desa. The perpetrator promised a low-cost housing program with a pre-payment requirement worth IDR 5.5 million. The four victims having inappropriate housing were immediately tempted and willing to give a pre-payment whose amount varied. Unluckily, after three years and so far the promised housing was never realized. The victims suffered a loss worth IDR 18.5 million. Having realized to have been deceived by the perpetrator, the victims reported the case to hamlet chief Lalu Madsin. Such a report was then submitted directly to Karangasem Police.

Spokesperson of Karangasem Police, Pasek Redita, said the report had been received. The officers further followed up the report by asking for information from the victims and conducting more in-depth investigation in order to uncover the fraud crime report. Based on the existing data, Karangasem still had around 33,000 poor households. Even, hundreds of them were estimated to be a beggar. Of that amount, even 11,000 more were reported to have not owned an appropriate housing. (013)

Such condition inspires him to make a breakthrough by providing free transport for school to invite the students wishing to visit museums in Gianyar in particular and Bali in general.

Regent Agung Bharata revealed the matter amidst the opening of painting exhibition entitled ‘Space of Time’ held by the faculty staff, students, and alumni of the Department of Art Education, Ganesha Education University (Undiksha) Singaraja in Neka Museum Ubud, Sunday (Apr 21).

The free transport policy was made because of his concerns about the decline in the quality of art if without being coupled with the understanding on the real meaning of the art and culture existing in the museums.

“I do not worry about the art going extinct, but what I worry about is the degrading quality,” said the Regent Agung Bharata. Free transport was expected to motivate schools to plan a museum visit in accordance with the school subject. Free transport was emphasized on kindergarten, elementary and junior high school. The students of such ages generally had high memory. What they see, feel and understand when looking at paintings, sculptures or archaeological relics will be saved in their memories into adulthood.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NUSA DUA - The production of dried seaweed in the eastern Indonesian region is projected to reach 200,000 tons this year following an increasing number of seaweed processing industries there, an official has said.

It has been such a disaster for us,” said Yue Hejun, 28, as he waited to recharge his family’s three mobile phones at a charging stall, volunteered by a communications company and coordinated by the government in a new addition to the arsenal of services after natural disasters. “If we can charge our phones, we are at least able to keep in touch with our family members outside and that helps to set our minds at ease.”

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Future World Cup draws will be fairer to smaller nations, eliminating the scheduling disparity highlighted at the 2011 tournament in New Zealand, International Rugby Board chief executive Brett Gosper said Monday.

Gosper told reporters in Wellington that rugby’s Tier One or major nations will have to accept more rigorous schedules at the 2015 World Cup in England to ensure all teams competed on even terms.

Minor rugby nations complained after the 2011 World Cup that they faced more taxing schedules than their larger rivals. Samoa played four pool matches in 16 days and Japan played its group games in 17 days while New Zealand, Australia, England and South Africa enjoyed at least a week’s respite between matches.

Indonesia is hosting the 21sth International Seaweed Symposium from April 21 to 26, 2013 in Nusa Dua, Bali, which is participated in by 700 participants from 50 countries.

Among dozens of the tourist objects, only four that are frequently visited, such as the Kertha Gosa, Goa Lawah, Levi Rafting in Melangit River and Nusa Penida, especially the Ceningan and Lembongan Island. An observation made last Sunday to Japanese Heritage Cave indicated if the condition was very alarming. Some cavities into

The Division Head of Tourist Object, Klungkung Culture and Tourism Agency, Nyoman Purnama, said that people no longer dared to go into the Japanese Heritage Cave. Moreover, the condition almost collapsed and the water kept on leaking from inside the cave. Besides, the agency also had difficulty related to parking lot because it was located exactly at the Banjarangkan roadside.

In 2013, the tourism sector of Klungkung remained to survive at four objects as mentioned above. Until March 2013, the regionally generated revenue coming into the Klungkung Culture and Tourism Agency reached IDR 229,655,500. But this year, the tourism sector of Klungkung seemed to be sluggish due to various incidents taking place in the area of Nusa Penida (Ceningan and Lembongan Island). This year, the tourism sector in Nusa Penida got a lot of challenges such as the collapse of Lembongan-Ceningan Bridge and installation of submarine cables to Nusa Penida that damaged the coral reefs. Damaged road, Angseri hot spring attraction left by visitors Tabanan (Bali Post)—

Damage to road infrastructure in Tabanan begins to have an impact on tourism management. Due to damaged road, the hot spring tourist attractions at Angseri hamlet, Angseri village, Baturiti, is left by visitors. Since the past two years, tourist arrival has dropped sharply.

This natural attraction was opened in 2007. Unluckily, condition of the road to the location is destroyed because it is never touched by project so that the damage is getting worse.

The worst condition has occurred within the past three years. Almost along the road section has potholes and flakes off. “This is our problem.

Due to damaged road, tourist arrival continues to decline,” said the operator of Angseri hot spring, Made Wirya, Sunday (Apr 21).

According to Wirya, the damaged road occurred along around 4 km. It was the main road access connecting Angseri village to Senganan and Jatiluwih international tourist area. Such damaged road had been going on nearly for 10 years. However, it had not been repaired yet. The condition was exacerbated by the steep position of the road so that it was passed

through by water in rainy season.

“Have a look, all the asphalt layers have run thin, now it only leaves rocks and holes,” he complained.

Such condition caused many tourists reluctant to visit the hot spring at Angseri whereas when the road was not as bad as this time the number of tourist arrival was quite good. Within a day, the visit could reach 200-400 people, especially on weekend and holiday season. Since the road was getting worse, the number of visit dropped dramatically. “Last year, the total tourist arrival only reached about 5,000 people. Such amount was smaller compared to previous years,” complained Wirya. Most visitors coming to Angseri were domestic tourists from Bali and Java, while the remaining was foreign tourist.

Wirya added that many tour guides

complained about the condition of road to Angseri. As a result, they were reluctant to bring guests to the tourist attraction whereas many tourists were tempted by the authenticity of local nature at Angseri. In addition to hot spring, this region also offered a natural rice field and bamboo forest.

Related to the condition, the operator had attempted to propose a road repair for several times through the village.

Unfortunately, the result was still zero.

“Until now, there has been no sign if the road will be repaired,” he said.

Such tourist attraction actually had become one of the income sources for Angseri village because most admission fees were paid to the village. Local residents could also earn a fortune from the tourist activities.

He added that Angseri tourist area was originally managed by the village. To boost the revenue, the management was then transferred to community group working with the village authority. Representing the management, he hoped the road at local village could soon get a repair project so that the tourist arrival could go back up. (kmb30)

In other words, after the completion of the 20 kV submarine cables from Pering Beach Gianyar to Nusa Lembongan along approximately 17 kilometers, the diesel-fired power plant at Kutampi Nusa Penida providing the electricity to three sister islands of Bali namely Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan was no longer operated.

“The submarine cables have been operating since April 8, 2013 with an average load of 2.8 MW (megawatts) to supply the power to Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan,” said Mastika.

He said the construction of such submarine cables had been through environmental impact assessment in collaboration with the University of Udayana and coordination with the government.

“PLN, in this regard thanked the people of Lembongan that have helped the smoothness of the project. Even, the land used for cable landing point was given to PLN at no cost by the village,” he said.

Mastika added the PLN was also very concerned with the environment, including the coral reefs around the Lembongan Island in accordance with the mission of the PLN running the eco-friendly electricity business. Furthermore, the PLN would make coordination with stakeholders to participate in the preservation of coral reef in Lembongan. “In the near future, the PLN will put up signs for the safety of the community and guarantee the continuity of the submarine cable operations. Activists fear large death toll near Damascus Associated Press Writer

BEIRUT — Six days of clashes in two Damascus suburbs may have killed hundreds of people, a dramatic spike in the rising death toll in the Syrian civil war, activists said Monday.

The reports came as President Bashar Assad’s forces pressed on with a major offensive in the suburbs against opposition fighters who have been closing in on parts of the Syrian capital. To the north, regime troops surged around the contested town of Qusair in Syria’s Homs province, near the frontier with Lebanon.

The precise number of those killed in the latest fighting in Jdaidet Artouz and Jdaidet al-Fadel suburbs could not be immediately confirmed.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the number of the dead could be as high as 250. Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the Observatory, said the group has documented 80 names of those killed but fears a much higher toll.

The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said the death toll was 483 and that most of the victims were killed in Jdaidet Artouz. State-run news agency SANA said Syrian troops “inflicted heavy losses” on the rebels in the suburbs.

Conflicting reports of death tolls are common in Syria’s crisis, especially in areas that are difficult to access because of the fighting. The government also bars many foreign journalists from covering the conflict. Both activist groups, the Observatory and the LCC, rely on a network of activists on the ground in different parts of Syria.

Also Monday, two bombings targeted an army checkpoint and a military post in a third Damascus suburb, Mleiha, killing eight soldiers there, according to the Observatory.

“My understanding is that the three ministers paid visits to the shrine in their private capacity,” Suga told a news conference. “There is no government comment to their shrine visits as private citizens.”

Suga acknowledged reports that South Korea cancelled foreign ministerial talks but he said the talks for later this month were at planning stage and weren’t official.

The shrine honors Japanese wartime leaders convicted of war crimes among 2.5 million war-dead. The shrine compound has a war museum that glorifies

Japan’s wartime past, and the site is a focus of nationalist pride among Japanese conservatives and right-wingers.

The visits come as Japan is at odds with South Korea over an island group in the Sea of Japan that Seoul has controlled since the 1950s and increasingly at odds as well with China over a group of small islands in the East China Sea that both countries claim.

Suga said Monday the shrine visits and donations were private and shouldn’t affect diplomacy. “Each country has its own stance on different issues. We should not let these

things affect diplomatic relations,” Suga added, apparently urging Seoul to calm.

Previous visits to the shrine by political leaders have been harshly criticized by South Korea, as well as China and North Korea, which bore the brunt of Japan’s pre-1945 militarist march through Asia. The visits are regarded as evidence that Japan’s leaders do not acknowledge their country’s responsibility for its colonialist past.

Abe last visited the shrine in October, when he was opposition leader.

National Public Safety Commission chief Keiji Furuya, who paid pilgrimage to the shrine on Sunday, told reporters that he prayed as state minister but he privately paid his donation money.

“As a national lawmaker, it is only natural to offer prayers to the sacred spirits who sacrificed their lives for the country,” Furuya said.

Rescuers struggle to reach China quake zone as toll climbs

LUSHAN, China - Rescuers struggled to reach a remote, rural corner of southwestern China on Sunday as the toll of the dead and missing from the country’s worst earthquake in three years climbed to 208 with almost 1,000 serious injuries. “Supplies have had difficulty getting into the region because of the traffic jams. Most of our supplies are still on the way.”

In Ya’an, relief workers from across China expressed frustration with gaining access to Lushan and the villages beyond, up in the mountains. “We’re in a hurry. There are people that need help and we have supplies in the back (of the car),” said one man from the Shandong Province Earthquake Emergency Response Team, who declined to give his name. The Ministry of Civil Affairs put the number of dead at 184 and missing at 24, with more than 11,800 injured.

blocked from using roads that were wrecked by landslides and marched in single file with shovels en route to Baoxing, one of the hardest hit areas. Xinhua news agency said 18,000 troops were in the area. The Foreign Ministry thanked foreign governments for offers of help, but said the country was able to cope.

In Lushan, doctors and nurses tended to people in the open or under tents in the grounds of the main hospital, surrounded by shattered glass, plaster and concrete.

Water and electricity were cut off by the quake, but the spring weather is warm.

“I was scared. I’ve never seen an earthquake this big before,” said farmer Chen Tianxiong, 37, lying on a stretcher between tents, his family looking on.

In another tent, Zhou Lin sat tending to his wife and three-day-old son who were evacuated from a Lushan hospital soon after the quake struck on Saturday.

“I was worried the child or his mother would be hurt. The buildings were all shaking. I was extremely scared. But now I don’t feel afraid any more,” said Zhou, looking at his child who was wrapped in a blanket on a makeshift bed.

The anger echoes the response to the gang rape of a 23-year-old trainee physiotherapist on a bus on December 16. She later died of her injuries. Protesters are angry authorities have failed to prevent more such crimes.

Police say the child was abducted on Monday last week and kept in captivity by two men in the basement of the building that she lived in with her family. Neighbors say they found her two days later after hearing her cries.

Media reported several other attacks on children over the weekend, including that of a nine-year old girl in the north-eastern state of Assam, who had her throat slit after being gang-raped, TV channels said.

A man was arrested at the weekend for the attack on the five-yearold and is due to appear in a Delhi court this week. The second suspect, in his early 20s, was arrested early on Monday at a relative’s house in the eastern state of Bihar on information received from New

Delhi, local police chief Rajeev Mishra said.

“He was arrested about 1 a.m.,” Mishra said. “...Delhi police and local police made a combined effort to arrest him.” Brutal sex crimes are common in India, which has a population of 1.2 billion. New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among major cities, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours, according to police figures.

But most such crimes go unreported and justice is slow, according to social activists, who say successive governments have done little to ensure the safety of women and children.

The December 16 attack brought thousands on to the streets in protest and provoked national debate about the rising number of vicious attacks on women, putting the issue firmly on the national political agenda a year before elections.

Activists planned a fourth day of street action amid heavy security in Delhi after protesters tussled with

police and tried to reach the homes of India’s leaders at the weekend.

The protesters are calling for Delhi’s police chief to resign.

The five-year-old girl’s name has not been revealed, but media have nicknamed her “Gudiya”, or doll. She has undergone surgery and was in stable condition on Monday, a doctor at the hospital where she is being treated told reporters.

The lower house of parliament was adjourned twice after opposition politicians rushed into the building, some demanding discussion on the rape case. Others were protesting against corruption and other issues.

“Though parliament has recently passed tougher legislation to prevent rapes, the evil has not abated and such incidents are still on the rise throughout the country,” House Speaker Meira Kumar said before the house was adjourned. The upper house of parliament was due to hold a debate on violence against women in the afternoon.

MEXICO CITY - A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck western Mexico on Sunday, shaking buildings in the capital, but there were no reports of significant damage or injuries, officials said.

The quake, initially reported as a magnitude 6.2 off the coast, was centered 33 km (20 miles) northwest of La Union, on the border between Guerrero and Michoacan states, close to the Pacific coast, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

State oil monopoly Pemex said shortly after the quake that the power supply to its Tula refinery was interrupted. Not long after, it reported electricity was coming back on line again.

Pemex said it was unclear if the tremor had caused the break in energy supply at the Tula refinery, Mexico’s second biggest. It has a production capacity of 315,000 barrels per day.

A Pemex official could not say whether production had been affected, but added that any loss would be made up.

The quake was felt in Mexico City, about 325 km (200 miles) away from La Union. Buildings shook and residents briefly ran outdoors, but most returned inside shortly afterwards.

Several senior Mexican officials, including Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong, said via Twitter there were no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage.

Israel and Turkey discuss compensation for ship raid victims Reuters

ANKARA - An Israeli delegation arrived in Turkey on Monday for the first time since 2010 to discuss compensation for the killing of nine Turks by Israeli commandos on a Gaza-bound aid ship, a sign of improving relations between the two U.S. allies.

The visit, led by an adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, follows an apology from Israel last month, brokered by U.S. President Barack Obama, for the killings on board the Mavi Marmara aid ship in May 2010.

Turkey cut its once extensive ties with the Jewish state after the Israelis killed nine Turkish pro-Palestinian activists on the vessel which was trying to breach Israel’s blockade of Gaza, a Palestinian enclave run by the Hamas Islamist group.

Ankara expelled Israel’s ambassador and froze military cooperation after a U.N. report into the incident, released in September 2011, largely exonerated the Jewish state.

It set precise conditions for normalizing ties - an apology, compensation and Israel lifting its embargo on Gaza.

A rapprochement between two of Washington’s main Middle Eastern allies could bolster U.S. influence in the region, help coordination to contain spillover from the Syrian civil war, and ease Israel’s diplomatic isolation among its neighbors.

But for all the diplomatic flurry, a full restoration of ties still appears some way off.

Israel has made clear it did not commit to ending its Gaza blockade as part of the reconciliation, an oft-repeated Turkish demand, saying days after the apology that it could clamp down even harder on the enclave if security is threatened.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry asked Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday to delay a visit planned for late May to Gaza.

Kerry, who has visited the region several times in recent weeks, said Erdogan’s trip could endanger U.S. efforts to revive Ankara’s ties with Israel and Middle East peace talks.

INDONESIA VW and GM exploring possibilities to invest in Indonesia

JAKARTA - Two automotive giants, VW from Germany and GM from the US, have expressed interest to invest in Indonesia, Investment Coordinating Agency (BKPM) chief Chatib Basri said.

“They have shown their seriousness to invest here,” he said after exposing realization of foreign and domestic investment in the first quarter this year here on Monday.

He said representatives of VW and General Motors came to Indonesia last week “to express their interest to invest.”

Representatives from the two companies wished to study and personally observe process of investment with regard to preparations they have to make if they realize their plan.

“The plan of VW and GM to enter Indonesia is a positive thing for Indonesia’s economy,” he said.

Chatib however could not as yet tell how much they would invest or when they would realize the investment.

He only said that besides Japan it was found that German and US automotive companies have also been interested to invest in Indonesia.

Chatib said that Apple Inc., a top

technology company, would also immediately realize its investment plan in the country.

The California-based company has already submitted its business license to Indonesia, he said.

“Let us just wait because the business license was already signed in January 2013. In view of that we hope Apple would immediately realize its plan,” he said.

He said he hoped Apple’s presence in Indonesia would have a positive effect on the country’s industry as it would certainly be followed by other information technology companies because Apple has become the world’s icon.

BKPM recorded foreign and domestic investment grew 30.6 percent in the first quarter to Rp93 trillion.

Realization of domestic investment was up 39.6 percent to Rp27.5 trillion while foreign investment grew 27.2 percent to Rp51.5 trillion.

Garuda procures new planes using Shariah scheme Antara

JAKARTA - Garuda Indonesia is procuring two new Boeing 777300ERs through leasing based on a shariah financing scheme from Kuwaiti company Alafco Aviation Lease and Finance Company.

“This is the first shariah-based financing scheme taken by Garuda,” the state-owned airline company’s president director, Emirsyah Satar said at the signing of a cooperation agreement between Garuda and Alafco at Soekarno-Hatta airport here on Monday.

Emirsyah said this was a “milestone” in Garuda’s efforts in exploring possible other financing sources.

He said the shariah financing scheme was also a breakthrough to deal with large flows of funds from the Middle East.

He said the shariah-based financing based on the concept of “ijarah”

was worth around US$315 million for one airplane.

“The funds from the Middle East have mostly been channeled through a shariah scheme,” he said.

Emirsyah said the financing was in line with the growth of Garuda passengers which was recorded up by around 20 percent in 2012.

He said the cooperation was also in line with the company’s long-term program put in the Quantum Leap 2011-2015.

Alafco chairman Ahmad Alzabin meanwhile said the company was honored to be able to cooperate with Garuda.

“The signing of the agreement for two Boeing 777-300ER is the first transaction his company made in Indonesia,” he said.

He hoped the cooperation would continue in line with Garuda’s future growth plans.

Lotus boss Eric Boullier says his team has no reason to be disappointed at missing out on victory in the Bahrain Grand Prix. Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean’s chances of victory were effectively dashed by a poor performance in qualifying, which left them unable to threaten eventual winner Sebastian Vettel in the key early stages of the race.

With the pair coming through to finish second and third, there was every chance they could have challenged for the win if they had started near the front.

But Boullier says his outfit should

not be downbeat that it missed a good opportunity to win. “I have to be happy obviously,” Boullier told AUTOSPORT. “It is a great result for the team.

“We worked very hard, and everybody back in Enstone built up very well, so we had a nice weekend.

“We had a little bit of a blow in qualifying, but it was a good recovery from the positions on the grid.

“It is clearly good, and an even better point as well is that Romain is clearly now back on track.”

his team had done the right thing in bringing forward Raikkonen’s final stop of the race, even though the Finn questioned the move over the radio.

MOSCOW - Russia completed a remarkable fightback to beat Slovakia 3-2 in a dramatic Fed Cup semi-final by sweeping the last three rubbers on Sunday.

The Russians will play Italy or the Czech Republic in the final in November. Italy led the top-ranked Czechs 2-1 after a rain-interrupted second day in Palermo and the tie will be finished on Monday.

Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina secured the winning point for hosts Russia when they outlasted Dominika Cibulkova and Daniela Hantuchova 4-6 6-3 6-1 in the decisive doubles to clinch the two-day tie on Moscow clay.

After splitting the first two sets, the Russians broke Cibulkova in the fourth game and Hantuchova in the sixth to run away in the final set as the Slovak duo slowly ran out of steam.

“We hadn’t played such hard and dramatic matches in Fed Cup for a very long time,” Vesnina told Russian television NTV Plus. “After a disastrous first day we still believed we could win.

Luckily we did it.”

Two of a kind clash as Bayern take on Barcelona

Munich - Pep Guardiola is not the only connection between Bayern Munich and Barcelona, who meet in their Champions League semi-final, first leg at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday.

Both teams are dominating their leagues to an almost embarrassing extent, have won the Champions League four times apiece, share an acrimonious rivalry with Real Madrid, and owe part of their success to the flamboyant Dutchman Louis van Gaal.

Both have also been in two Champions League finals in the last four years, though the Catalans won both of theirs and the Bavarians came out losers on each occasion.

Barcelona are 13 points clear at the top of La Liga, yet could be considered underdogs against a rampant Bayern, who wrapped up the Bundesliga two weeks ago and won two games by 6-1 margins this week even when resting their top players.

“The players are just enjoying their football, and our attitude is superb.

Every man was totally motivated, we put together some very fluid moves, we showed great discipline, and we created outstanding goals,” said coach Jupp Heynckes after Saturday’s 6-1 win at Hanover 96. “Once again, the players have proved we don’t have a B-team, we only have an A team.”

Bayern’s dominance has caused some disquiet in the Bundesliga, which often proclaims itself to be Europe’s most open league.

“There’s a big difference in performance levels in the league,” club

president Uli Hoeness told Kicker last week. “We can’t be comfortable with that. We have to analyse why this is the case.”

Barcelona’s superiority in La Liga has led to suggestions from Madrid media that it has become a formality for them and they will not even celebrate winning it.

“It appears there are people who want to make out that the league doesn’t count for anything, but that’s not the case, it’s a very important title,” said midfielder Cesc Fabregas. “We have worked very hard.”

“If we do eventually win the league, there is no doubt that there is great merit in taking four titles in five seasons,” stand-in coach Jordi Roura said. “It’s a very difficult championship.”

Bayern believe their playing style and policy of giving priority to players raised locally makes them similar to Barcelona and that it was only natural that Guardiola, who quit the Nou Camp last season, should continue his career at the Allianz Arena from next season.

Hoeness revealed recently that Bayern had been involved in talks with Guardiola long before he agreed to coach them in January.

“I had the impression from the beginning that Bayern are a club who are

quite close to Barcelona in footballing attitude, so it was not that difficult for us to convince him,” Hoeness told World Soccer magazine.

VAN GAAL CLAIM

Then there is the Van Gaal connection. The Dutchman left Bayern when he was sacked two years ago, but has a legitimate claim to be the architect of the current side. It was under Van Gaal that Bayern began to press the opposition in their own half and play attacking, possession football, a style that makes them such formidable opposition.

Van Gaal also put together the dreaded Arjen Robben-Frank Ribery parternship just behind the Bayern centre forward.

Van Gaal left Barcelona in similarly unhappy circumstances in 2000, yet he also revived the Catalan club, winning successive La Liga titles to end a fouryear drought and took the decision to make Guardiola captain.

Toni Kroos - and Barcelona have been surprisingly rare, with just six previous meetings.

“I remember that game well and I don’t really like to think about it, because it was quite painful to watch,” said Bayern chief executive KarlHeinz Rummenigge. “However, it’s a wonderful opportunity to show that we have improved a lot since then.”

PARIS — Paris Saint-Germain closed in on the French league title Sunday with a 3-0 victory over Nice that restored its nine-point lead over Marseille. With just five rounds left, the big-spending French club now looks unstoppable in its attempt to win a first league crown since 1994.

Jeremy Menez gave PSG the lead from close range in the 10th minute, and striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic doubled the lead by converting a penalty in the 65th. Substitute Clement Chantome then rounded off the win in the 88th, leaving PSG on 70 points after 33 games.

Marseille has 61, while Lyon is another two points behind in third.

“This match was very important because keeping a nine-point lead means the title is getting closer,” PSG coach Carlo Ancelotti said.

Earlier Sunday, Lille kept pace in the race for a Champions League spot by defeating Bastia 2-1 to stay three points behind Lyon. Also, Nancy beat Evian 3-1, Sochaux drew 2-2 with Bordeaux, Lorient won 1-0 at Toulouse and Valenciennes defeated Reims by the same scoreline.

LONDON — Liverpool fined Luis Suarez on Monday for biting an opponent, and demanded that the troublesome striker works on his disciplinary problems. The Uruguay striker dug his teeth into Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic’s arm during Sunday’s Premier League match before netting a last-gasp equalizer to clinch a 2-2 draw.

“For my unacceptable behavior yesterday, the club has fined me today,” Suarez announced on his Twitter and Facebook accounts.

He wants the undisclosed sum to be donated to families affected by the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium disaster which killed 96 Liverpool fans “for the inconvenience I have created to the Liverpool fans and to Ivanovic.”

Suarez, who could still face a long ban from the Football Association, was suspended for seven matches in 2010 while playing for Ajax after biting a player.

Trouble followed Suarez to Liverpool, and he was suspended for eight games in December 2011 for making racist insults toward Manchester United defender Patrice

Evra during a Premier League match.

But Liverpool insisted Monday that Suarez’s future at the club has not been harmed by his latest high-profile misdemeanor.

“It affects his future in the sense that we have to work with him on his discipline — but Luis is a very important player to the club,” Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre said. “He’s a very popular player with his teammates. As we keep saying, he signed a new four-year contract last summer and we’d all love to see him here throughout that contract.

“He’s a fantastic player, top scorer and everything we’d want in a striker, so there’s no change there. This is more about getting him back on the right track.” The Professional Footballers’ Association has offered the services of counselors.

“There is no doubting his football ability, that’s why it is so disappointing and embarrassing when he lets himself down,” PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor said.

“We have to work hard on anger management now. We have trained counselors in this field and we will be offering their services to Liverpool and the player to try to improve matters.”

Two of a kind clash as Bayern take on Barcelona

Munich - Pep Guardiola is not the only connection between Bayern Munich and Barcelona, who meet in their Champions League semi-final, first leg at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday.

Both teams are dominating their leagues to an almost embarrassing extent, have won the Champions League four times apiece, share an acrimonious rivalry with Real Madrid, and owe part of their success to the flamboyant Dutchman Louis van Gaal.

Both have also been in two Champions League finals in the last four years, though the Catalans won both of theirs and the Bavarians came out losers on each occasion.

Barcelona are 13 points clear at the top of La Liga, yet could be considered underdogs against a rampant Bayern, who wrapped up the Bundesliga two weeks ago and won two games by 6-1 margins this week even when resting their top players.

“The players are just enjoying their football, and our attitude is superb.

Every man was totally motivated, we put together some very fluid moves, we showed great discipline, and we created outstanding goals,” said coach Jupp Heynckes after Saturday’s 6-1 win at Hanover 96. “Once again, the players have proved we don’t have a B-team, we only have an A team.”

Bayern’s dominance has caused some disquiet in the Bundesliga, which often proclaims itself to be Europe’s most open league.

“There’s a big difference in performance levels in the league,” club

president Uli Hoeness told Kicker last week. “We can’t be comfortable with that. We have to analyse why this is the case.”

Barcelona’s superiority in La Liga has led to suggestions from Madrid media that it has become a formality for them and they will not even celebrate winning it.

“It appears there are people who want to make out that the league doesn’t count for anything, but that’s not the case, it’s a very important title,” said midfielder Cesc Fabregas. “We have worked very hard.”

Hoeness revealed recently that Bayern had been involved in talks with Guardiola long before he agreed to coach them in January.

“I had the impression from the beginning that Bayern are a club who are

quite close to Barcelona in footballing attitude, so it was not that difficult for us to convince him,” Hoeness told World Soccer magazine.

VAN GAAL CLAIM

Then there is the Van Gaal connection. The Dutchman left Bayern when he was sacked two years ago, but has a legitimate claim to be the architect of the current side. It was under Van Gaal that Bayern began to press the opposition in their own half and play attacking, possession football, a style that makes them such formidable opposition.

Van Gaal also put together the dreaded Arjen Robben-Frank Ribery parternship just behind the Bayern centre forward.

Van Gaal left Barcelona in similarly unhappy circumstances in 2000, yet he also revived the Catalan club, winning successive La Liga titles to end a fouryear drought and took the decision to make Guardiola captain.

PSG beats Nice 3-0 to close in on league title Associated Press Writer

PARIS — Paris Saint-Germain closed in on the French league title Sunday with a 3-0 victory over Nice that restored its nine-point lead over Marseille. With just five rounds left, the big-spending French club now looks unstoppable in its attempt to win a first league crown since 1994.

Jeremy Menez gave PSG the lead from close range in the 10th minute, and striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic doubled the lead by converting a penalty in the 65th. Substitute Clement Chantome then rounded off the win in the 88th, leaving PSG on 70 points after 33 games.

Marseille has 61, while Lyon is another two points behind in third.

“This match was very important because keeping a nine-point lead means the title is getting closer,” PSG coach Carlo Ancelotti said.

Earlier Sunday, Lille kept pace in the race for a Champions League spot by defeating Bastia 2-1 to stay three points behind Lyon. Also, Nancy beat Evian 3-1, Sochaux drew 2-2 with Bordeaux, Lorient won 1-0 at Toulouse and Valenciennes defeated Reims by the same scoreline.

Lotus boss Eric Boullier says his team has no reason to be disappointed at missing out on victory in the Bahrain Grand Prix. Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean’s chances of victory were effectively dashed by a poor performance in qualifying, which left them unable to threaten eventual winner Sebastian Vettel in the key early stages of the race.

With the pair coming through to finish second and third, there was every chance they could have challenged for the win if they had started near the front.

But Boullier says his outfit should

not be downbeat that it missed a good opportunity to win. “I have to be happy obviously,” Boullier told AUTOSPORT. “It is a great result for the team.

“We worked very hard, and everybody back in Enstone built up very well, so we had a nice weekend.

“We had a little bit of a blow in qualifying, but it was a good recovery from the positions on the grid.

“It is clearly good, and an even better point as well is that Romain is clearly now back on track.”

MOSCOW - Russia completed a remarkable fightback to beat Slovakia 3-2 in a dramatic Fed Cup semi-final by sweeping the last three rubbers on Sunday.

The Russians will play Italy or the Czech Republic in the final in November. Italy led the top-ranked Czechs 2-1 after a rain-interrupted second day in Palermo and the tie will be finished on Monday.

Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina secured the winning point for hosts Russia when they outlasted Dominika Cibulkova and Daniela Hantuchova 4-6 6-3 6-1 in the decisive doubles to clinch the two-day tie on Moscow clay.

After splitting the first two sets, the Russians broke Cibulkova in the fourth game and Hantuchova in the sixth to run away in the final set as the Slovak duo slowly ran out of steam.

“We hadn’t played such hard and dramatic matches in Fed Cup for a very long time,” Vesnina told Russian television NTV Plus. “After a disastrous first day we still believed we could win.

Luckily we did it.”

Second man arrested for India girl rape, chaos in parliament Reuters

NEW DELHI - Indian police arrested a second man on Monday in connection with the rape and torture of a five-year-old girl in New Delhi and parliament was adjourned twice amid an uproar about the crime which has rekindled popular fury at widespread sexual violence.

The anger echoes the response to the gang rape of a 23-year-old trainee physiotherapist on a bus on December 16. She later died of her injuries. Protesters are angry authorities have failed to prevent more such crimes.

Police say the child was abducted on Monday last week and kept in captivity by two men in the basement of the building that she lived in with her family. Neighbors say they found her two days later after hearing her cries.

Media reported several other attacks on children over the weekend, including that of a nine-year old girl in the north-eastern state of Assam, who had her throat slit after being gang-raped, TV channels said.

A man was arrested at the weekend for the attack on the five-yearold and is due to appear in a Delhi court this week. The second suspect, in his early 20s, was arrested early on Monday at a relative’s house in the eastern state of Bihar on information received from New

Delhi, local police chief Rajeev Mishra said.

“He was arrested about 1 a.m.,” Mishra said. “...Delhi police and local police made a combined effort to arrest him.” Brutal sex crimes are common in India, which has a population of 1.2 billion. New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among major cities, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours, according to police figures.

But most such crimes go unreported and justice is slow, according to social activists, who say successive governments have done little to ensure the safety of women and children.

The December 16 attack brought thousands on to the streets in protest and provoked national debate about the rising number of vicious attacks on women, putting the issue firmly on the national political agenda a year before elections.

The quake, initially reported as a magnitude 6.2 off the coast, was centered 33 km (20 miles) northwest of La Union, on the border between Guerrero and Michoacan states, close to the Pacific coast, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

State oil monopoly Pemex said shortly after the quake that the power supply to its Tula refinery was interrupted. Not long after, it reported electricity was coming back on line again.

Pemex said it was unclear if the tremor had caused the break in energy supply at the Tula refinery, Mexico’s second biggest. It has a production capacity of 315,000 barrels per day.

A Pemex official could not say whether production had been affected, but added that any loss would be made up.

The quake was felt in Mexico City, about 325 km (200 miles) away from La Union. Buildings shook and residents briefly ran outdoors, but most returned inside shortly afterwards.

Several senior Mexican officials, including Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong, said via Twitter there were no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage.

A rapprochement between two of Washington’s main Middle Eastern allies could bolster U.S. influence in the region, help coordination to contain spillover from the Syrian civil war, and ease Israel’s diplomatic isolation among its neighbors.

But for all the diplomatic flurry, a full restoration of ties still appears some way off.

Israel has made clear it did not commit to ending its Gaza blockade as part of the reconciliation, an oft-repeated Turkish demand, saying days after the apology that it could clamp down even harder on the enclave if security is threatened.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry asked Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday to delay a visit planned for late May to Gaza.

INDONESIA VW and GM exploring possibilities to invest in Indonesia

JAKARTA - Two automotive giants, VW from Germany and GM from the US, have expressed interest to invest in Indonesia, Investment Coordinating Agency (BKPM) chief Chatib Basri said.

“They have shown their seriousness to invest here,” he said after exposing realization of foreign and domestic investment in the first quarter this year here on Monday.

He said representatives of VW and General Motors came to Indonesia last week “to express their interest to invest.”

Representatives from the two companies wished to study and personally observe process of investment with regard to preparations they have to make if they realize their plan.

“The plan of VW and GM to enter Indonesia is a positive thing for Indonesia’s economy,” he said.

Chatib however could not as yet tell how much they would invest or when they would realize the investment.

He only said that besides Japan it was found that German and US automotive companies have also been interested to invest in Indonesia.

technology company, would also immediately realize its investment plan in the country.

The California-based company has already submitted its business license to Indonesia, he said.

“Let us just wait because the business license was already signed in January 2013. In view of that we hope Apple would immediately realize its plan,” he said.

He said he hoped Apple’s presence in Indonesia would have a positive effect on the country’s industry as it would certainly be followed by other information technology companies because Apple has become the world’s icon.

BKPM recorded foreign and domestic investment grew 30.6 percent in the first quarter to Rp93 trillion.

Realization of domestic investment was up 39.6 percent to Rp27.5 trillion while foreign investment grew 27.2 percent to Rp51.5 trillion.

Garuda procures new planes using Shariah scheme Antara

JAKARTA - Garuda Indonesia is procuring two new Boeing 777300ERs through leasing based on a shariah financing scheme from Kuwaiti company Alafco Aviation Lease and Finance Company.

“This is the first shariah-based financing scheme taken by Garuda,” the state-owned airline company’s president director, Emirsyah Satar said at the signing of a cooperation agreement between Garuda and Alafco at Soekarno-Hatta airport here on Monday.

Emirsyah said this was a “milestone” in Garuda’s efforts in exploring possible other financing sources.

He said the shariah financing scheme was also a breakthrough to deal with large flows of funds from the Middle East.

He said the shariah-based financing based on the concept of “ijarah”

was worth around US$315 million for one airplane.

“The funds from the Middle East have mostly been channeled through a shariah scheme,” he said.

Emirsyah said the financing was in line with the growth of Garuda passengers which was recorded up by around 20 percent in 2012.

He said the cooperation was also in line with the company’s long-term program put in the Quantum Leap 2011-2015.

Alafco chairman Ahmad Alzabin meanwhile said the company was honored to be able to cooperate with Garuda.

“The signing of the agreement for two Boeing 777-300ER is the first transaction his company made in Indonesia,” he said.

He hoped the cooperation would continue in line with Garuda’s future growth plans.

Such triple forces reflected the difference in unity. All the sects recognized Supreme God. Venue of the meeting to discuss about the trinity or Trimurti concept is now called the Samuan Tiga Temple.

Damaged road, Angseri hot spring attraction left by visitors Tabanan (Bali Post)—

Damage to road infrastructure in Tabanan begins to have an impact on tourism management. Due to damaged road, the hot spring tourist attractions at Angseri hamlet, Angseri village, Baturiti, is left by visitors. Since the past two years, tourist arrival has dropped sharply.

This natural attraction was opened in 2007. Unluckily, condition of the road to the location is destroyed because it is never touched by project so that the damage is getting worse.

The worst condition has occurred within the past three years. Almost along the road section has potholes and flakes off. “This is our problem.

Due to damaged road, tourist arrival continues to decline,” said the operator of Angseri hot spring, Made Wirya, Sunday (Apr 21).

According to Wirya, the damaged road occurred along around 4 km. It was the main road access connecting Angseri village to Senganan and Jatiluwih international tourist area. Such damaged road had been going on nearly for 10 years. However, it had not been repaired yet. The condition was exacerbated by the steep position of the road so that it was passed

through by water in rainy season.

“Have a look, all the asphalt layers have run thin, now it only leaves rocks and holes,” he complained.

Such condition caused many tourists reluctant to visit the hot spring at Angseri whereas when the road was not as bad as this time the number of tourist arrival was quite good. Within a day, the visit could reach 200-400 people, especially on weekend and holiday season. Since the road was getting worse, the number of visit dropped dramatically. “Last year, the total tourist arrival only reached about 5,000 people. Such amount was smaller compared to previous years,” complained Wirya. Most visitors coming to Angseri were domestic tourists from Bali and Java, while the remaining was foreign tourist.

Wirya added that many tour guides

complained about the condition of road to Angseri. As a result, they were reluctant to bring guests to the tourist attraction whereas many tourists were tempted by the authenticity of local nature at Angseri. In addition to hot spring, this region also offered a natural rice field and bamboo forest.

Related to the condition, the operator had attempted to propose a road repair for several times through the village.

Unfortunately, the result was still zero.

“Until now, there has been no sign if the road will be repaired,” he said.

Such tourist attraction actually had become one of the income sources for Angseri village because most admission fees were paid to the village. Local residents could also earn a fortune from the tourist activities.

He added that Angseri tourist area was originally managed by the village. To boost the revenue, the management was then transferred to community group working with the village authority. Representing the management, he hoped the road at local village could soon get a repair project so that the tourist arrival could go back up. (kmb30)

He said the construction of such submarine cables had been through environmental impact assessment in collaboration with the University of Udayana and coordination with the government.

“PLN, in this regard thanked the people of Lembongan that have helped the smoothness of the project. Even, the land used for cable landing point was given to PLN at no cost by the village,” he said.

Activists fear large death toll near Damascus Associated Press Writer

BEIRUT — Six days of clashes in two Damascus suburbs may have killed hundreds of people, a dramatic spike in the rising death toll in the Syrian civil war, activists said Monday.

The reports came as President Bashar Assad’s forces pressed on with a major offensive in the suburbs against opposition fighters who have been closing in on parts of the Syrian capital. To the north, regime troops surged around the contested town of Qusair in Syria’s Homs province, near the frontier with Lebanon.

The precise number of those killed in the latest fighting in Jdaidet Artouz and Jdaidet al-Fadel suburbs could not be immediately confirmed.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the number of the dead could be as high as 250. Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the Observatory, said the group has documented 80 names of those killed but fears a much higher toll.

The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said the death toll was 483 and that most of the victims were killed in Jdaidet Artouz. State-run news agency SANA said Syrian troops “inflicted heavy losses” on the rebels in the suburbs.

Conflicting reports of death tolls are common in Syria’s crisis, especially in areas that are difficult to access because of the fighting. The government also bars many foreign journalists from covering the conflict. Both activist groups, the Observatory and the LCC, rely on a network of activists on the ground in different parts of Syria.

Also Monday, two bombings targeted an army checkpoint and a military post in a third Damascus suburb, Mleiha, killing eight soldiers there, according to the Observatory.

“My understanding is that the three ministers paid visits to the shrine in their private capacity,” Suga told a news conference. “There is no government comment to their shrine visits as private citizens.”

Suga acknowledged reports that South Korea cancelled foreign ministerial talks but he said the talks for later this month were at planning stage and weren’t official.

The shrine honors Japanese wartime leaders convicted of war crimes among 2.5 million war-dead. The shrine compound has a war museum that glorifies

Japan’s wartime past, and the site is a focus of nationalist pride among Japanese conservatives and right-wingers.

The visits come as Japan is at odds with South Korea over an island group in the Sea of Japan that Seoul has controlled since the 1950s and increasingly at odds as well with China over a group of small islands in the East China Sea that both countries claim.

Suga said Monday the shrine visits and donations were private and shouldn’t affect diplomacy. “Each country has its own stance on different issues. We should not let these

things affect diplomatic relations,” Suga added, apparently urging Seoul to calm.

Previous visits to the shrine by political leaders have been harshly criticized by South Korea, as well as China and North Korea, which bore the brunt of Japan’s pre-1945 militarist march through Asia. The visits are regarded as evidence that Japan’s leaders do not acknowledge their country’s responsibility for its colonialist past.

Abe last visited the shrine in October, when he was opposition leader.

National Public Safety Commission chief Keiji Furuya, who paid pilgrimage to the shrine on Sunday, told reporters that he prayed as state minister but he privately paid his donation money.

“As a national lawmaker, it is only natural to offer prayers to the sacred spirits who sacrificed their lives for the country,” Furuya said.

Rescuers struggle to reach China quake zone as toll climbs

LUSHAN, China - Rescuers struggled to reach a remote, rural corner of southwestern China on Sunday as the toll of the dead and missing from the country’s worst earthquake in three years climbed to 208 with almost 1,000 serious injuries. The 6.6 magnitude quake struck in Lushan county, near the city of Ya’an in the southwestern province of Sichuan, close to where a devastating 7.9 quake hit in May 2008, killing 70,000.

Most of the deaths were concentrated in Lushan, a short drive up the valley from Ya’an, but rescuers’ progress was hampered by the narrowness of the road and landslides, as well as government controls restricting access to avoid traffic jams. “The Lushan county center is getting back to normal, but the need is still considerable in terms of shelter and materials,” said Kevin Xia of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

“Supplies have had difficulty getting into the region because of the traffic jams. Most of our supplies are still on the way.”

In Ya’an, relief workers from across China expressed frustration with gaining access to Lushan and the villages beyond, up in the mountains. “We’re in a hurry. There are people that need help and we have supplies in the back (of the car),” said one man from the Shandong Province Earthquake Emergency Response Team, who declined to give his name. The Ministry of Civil Affairs put the number of dead at 184 and missing at 24, with more than 11,800 injured.

blocked from using roads that were wrecked by landslides and marched in single file with shovels en route to Baoxing, one of the hardest hit areas. Xinhua news agency said 18,000 troops were in the area. The Foreign Ministry thanked foreign governments for offers of help, but said the country was able to cope.

In Lushan, doctors and nurses tended to people in the open or under tents in the grounds of the main hospital, surrounded by shattered glass, plaster and concrete.

Water and electricity were cut off by the quake, but the spring weather is warm.

“I was scared. I’ve never seen an earthquake this big before,” said farmer Chen Tianxiong, 37, lying on a stretcher between tents, his family looking on.

In another tent, Zhou Lin sat tending to his wife and three-day-old son who were evacuated from a Lushan hospital soon after the quake struck on Saturday.

“I was worried the child or his mother would be hurt. The buildings were all shaking. I was extremely scared. But now I don’t feel afraid any more,” said Zhou, looking at his child who was wrapped in a blanket on a makeshift bed.

NUSA DUA - The production of dried seaweed in the eastern Indonesian region is projected to reach 200,000 tons this year following an increasing number of seaweed processing industries there, an official has said.

“Lushan was so heavily hit and my family’s house toppled. It has been such a disaster for us,” said Yue Hejun, 28, as he waited to recharge his family’s three mobile phones at a charging stall, volunteered by a communications company and coordinated by the government in a new addition to the arsenal of services after natural disasters. “If we can charge our phones, we are at least able to keep in touch with our family members outside and that helps to set our minds at ease.”

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Future World Cup draws will be fairer to smaller nations, eliminating the scheduling disparity highlighted at the 2011 tournament in New Zealand, International Rugby Board chief executive Brett Gosper said Monday.

Gosper told reporters in Wellington that rugby’s Tier One or major nations will have to accept more rigorous schedules at the 2015 World Cup in England to ensure all teams competed on even terms.

Minor rugby nations complained after the 2011 World Cup that they faced more taxing schedules than their larger rivals. Samoa played four pool matches in 16 days and Japan played its group games in 17 days while New Zealand, Australia, England and South Africa enjoyed at least a week’s respite between matches.

“We think in the next World Cup

schedule that will be announced very soon there is a very strong fairness in terms of the times of rest periods. It will be the same for all teams. Completely equal,” Gosper said. “There’s a very strong fairness in terms of the times of rest periods and so on. So it’ll be the same for all teams, far more equal. Completely equal versus the last World Cup.” The 2015 World Cup will be played between Sept. 18 and Oct. 31, 2015, suggesting most teams will have between four and five days between pool matches.

“We asked for it after the (last) World Cup,” Tew said. “We thought it was unjust that the smaller unions were asked to play at the pinnacle event on shorter times than our games, so the tier one unions made a direct request at the end of the last World Cup.”

“So far the capacity of dried seaweed production has been around 180,000 tons per year but in 2013 we will make every effort to increase it to 200,000 tons, Indonesian Seaweed Association (ARLI) Chairman Safari Azis said during the 21st International Seaweed Symposium (ISS) here on Monday.

He said that of the capacity of 180,000 tons, 169,000 tons with a total value of US$200 million were used to meet export market.

“Indonesia competes strongly with the Philippines in seaweed export market but the quality of our seaweed from ‘eucheuma cottonii’ type remains number one in the world,” said Safari said.

Symposium added that Indonesia has 16 seaweed processing industries and most of them are in eastern part of the country.

Safari noted that with the increasing number of seaweed processing industries in the country, ARLI would ask the government to give incentive and other facility to seaweed farmers in remote areas.

“If possible, the government must abolish the taxes which indirectly hamper the progress of seaweed industry in the country,” Safari suggested.

Indonesia is hosting the 21sth International Seaweed Symposium from April 21 to 26, 2013 in Nusa Dua, Bali, which is participated in by 700 participants from 50 countries.

Neglected, Japanese heritage cave attraction apprehensive

SEMARAPURA - A number of tourist objects in Klungkung seem to have not exploited maximally.

As evidence, some of the existing tourist objects are abandoned. For

instance, the Japanese heritage cave is almost like a sewer whose condition is very alarming.

In accordance with the Regent Decree No.335/1993 on the establishment of tourist object,

the Japanese Heritage Cave is one of the attractions among 17 tourist objects and attractions in Klungkung. They consist of Kertha Gosa, Semarajaya Museum, Puputan Klungkung Monument,

Taman Sari and Penataran Agung Neighborhood, Kamasan village, Gelgel Village, Klotok Beach, Unda River Area, Melangit River Area, Panti Timbrah, Kusamba Beach, Goa Lawah, Japanese Heritage Cave, Lepang Beach, Kentel Gumi Temple, Tihingan Village and Nusa Penida tourist resort.

Among dozens of the tourist objects, only four that are frequently visited, such as the Kertha Gosa, Goa Lawah, Levi Rafting in Melangit River and Nusa Penida, especially the Ceningan and Lembongan Island. It can be seen from the data of tourist arrival to Klungkung County in 2012 indicating the total tourist arrival reaching 286,648 people, where they included 60,262 tourists to Kertha Gosa, Goa Lawah (53,226), Levi Rafting (4,017) and Nusa Penida (169,143).

Of the total tourist arrival, the regionally generated revenue (PAD) from tourism amounted to IDR 1,411,547,958. Meanwhile, the remaining object, like the Japanese Heritage Cave was never visited whereas this object was rich in historical value that should be developed.

An observation made last Sunday to Japanese Heritage Cave indicated if the condition was very alarming. Some cavities into

of the cave resembled a sewer and were neglected. Even, it was becoming a strategic location for the installation of billboards of political purposes or product promotion.

The Division Head of Tourist Object, Klungkung Culture and Tourism Agency, Nyoman Purnama, said that people no longer dared to go into the Japanese Heritage Cave. Moreover, the condition almost collapsed and the water kept on leaking from inside the cave. Besides, the agency also had difficulty related to parking lot because it was located exactly at the Banjarangkan roadside.

In 2013, the tourism sector of Klungkung remained to survive at four objects as mentioned above. Until March 2013, the regionally generated revenue coming into the Klungkung Culture and Tourism Agency reached IDR 229,655,500. But this year, the tourism sector of Klungkung seemed to be sluggish due to various incidents taking place in the area of Nusa Penida (Ceningan and Lembongan Island). This year, the tourism sector in Nusa Penida got a lot of challenges such as the collapse of Lembongan-Ceningan Bridge and installation of submarine cables to Nusa Penida that damaged the coral reefs. A robbery case occurred again in the jurisdiction of Denpasar Metro Police.

The house belonging to a retired official of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Ngurah Gede, 80, on Jalan Suli No. 39 Denpasar was broken in by a robber, Thursday dawn (Apr 18). The perpetrator pointed a knife on the victim. As a result, a number of valuables belonging to the victim could be depleted. Meanwhile, the case had been reported to Denpasar Metro Police to be followed up.

Information at police station on Sunday (Apr 21) said the robbery was committed by a perpetrator lasting fairly fast because only in a few minutes it managed to deplete the properties of the victim. “At that time, the victim was sleeping with his family. Suddenly the victim saw a stranger at his home at 03:00 a.m.,” said a source at police station last Sunday.

Once the action was caught, the perpetrator pointed a knife to the victim. The perpetrator without a facial veil threatened the victim. If giving a resistance, the perpetrator did not hesitate to kill him. Under the threat with a knife, the victim could not do much. “The victim was asked to show where his valuables were stored,” he said while asking not to publish his name.

With fear, the victim then showed where his valuables were kept. The perpetrator took all the valuables of victim at ease such as earrings,

ring and others. Not only that, the perpetrator also looted his cash worth IDR 3,700,000. “The total losses suffered by the victim valued at IDR 10 million. Meanwhile, this case had been reported on Saturday (Apr 20) to Denpasar Metro Police,” he said.

Having received the report on the robbery action, police officers immediately came down to location to investigate the crime scene. Allegedly, the perpetrator entered the victim’s house by breaking in the window on the second floor.

After getting in, the perpetrator went down to the first floor. Well, at that time the victim caught the perpetrator so that the latter then pointed a knife.

“It’s not a robbery, but a thief,” said Chief of Criminal Detective Unit of Denpasar Metro Police, Ambariyadi Wijaya, when asked for his confirmation last Sunday. (kmb21)

Lured by cheap house program

Four poor people deceived by broker Amlapura (Bali Post)—

Lured to get cheap home program (PRM), four victims of poor people immediately submitted the requested pre-payment by perpetrator alleged to be a broker of the program in 2010.

Unfortunately, the promised affordable housing has not been realized so far. Afterward, the four poor people from Ujung Desa hamlet realized to have been deceived. Through hamlet chief named Madsin, 50, the four victims reported the case to Karangasem Police.

Spokesperson of Karangasem Police, Ketut Pasek Redita, with permission from Karangasem Police Chief, Sunday (Apr 21), confirmed in Karangasem if the officers had received the report of victims. As being delivered, Lalu Madsin, the hamlet chief of Ujung Desa Muslim, had received the complaint from residents on Friday afternoon (Apr 19). The four victims deceived by the broker of cheap home program were Mahmudin, 33, farmer (Sasak ethnic); Muhidin, 37; Muh Suhami, 37, farmer; and Lalu Mahrum, 23.

The four people were categorized to be poor with livelihood as farmer or fisherman and in 2010 were visited the perpetrator with

initial Pa, 60, a Javanese living on Jalan Pesagi Ujung Desa. The perpetrator promised a low-cost housing program with a pre-payment requirement worth IDR 5.5 million. The four victims having inappropriate housing were immediately tempted and willing to give a pre-payment whose amount varied. Unluckily, after three years and so far the promised housing was never realized. The victims suffered a loss worth IDR 18.5 million. Having realized to have been deceived by the perpetrator, the victims reported the case to hamlet chief Lalu Madsin. Such a report was then submitted directly to Karangasem Police.

Spokesperson of Karangasem Police, Pasek Redita, said the report had been received. The officers further followed up the report by asking for information from the victims and conducting more in-depth investigation in order to uncover the fraud crime report. Based on the existing data, Karangasem still had around 33,000 poor households. Even, hundreds of them were estimated to be a beggar. Of that amount, even 11,000 more were reported to have not owned an appropriate housing. (013)

The free transport policy was made because of his concerns about the decline in the quality of art if without being coupled with the understanding on the real meaning of the art and culture existing in the museums.

“I do not worry about the art going extinct, but what I worry about is the degrading quality,” said the Regent Agung Bharata. Free transport was expected to motivate schools to plan a museum visit in accordance with the school subject. Free transport was emphasized on kindergarten, elementary and junior high school. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Carly Rae Jepsen big Juno winner Associated Press Writer

REGINA, Saskatchewan — Call her a winner, definitely. Carly Rae Jepsen has won the top Junos at the 42nd annual Canadian music awards ceremony, including Album of the Year, Pop Album of the Year and Single of the Year for her

smash hit “Call Me Maybe.”

Jepsen seemed stunned during Sunday’s awards show that her gold-selling album “Kiss” beat out teen-pop sensation Justin Bieber and Celine Dion. However, Bieber did take home his fourth career Juno for Fan Choice Award.

NEW YORK — It’s hard enough for a couple to simulate sex onstage in front of 1,000 people. Now put them in a Shakespeare tragedy. OK, now to make it really hard: Remove one of the actors.

That’s what you get in one of many astounding scenes at the new Broadway version of “Macbeth” — all the major roles are being done by Alan Cumming, which means a bed scene in which his Lady Macbeth seduces her husband while persuading him to kill the king.

In the scene, Cumming, who won a 1998 Tony Award in Sam Mendes’ revival of “Cabaret,” redefines the notion of self-love. Half-dressed, he flips on a bed multiple times to alternate the parts, purring suggestively as the lady and then more lustful as the man. “Screw your courage to the sticking-place,” she teases him.

If it’s not clear by now, what Cumming is doing at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre is delivering a tour-de-force that redefines the term.

In a truncated version of the play that clocks in at less than two hours, Cumming is both Macbeths, the three witches, Macduff, Duncan, Malcolm, Banquo and a half dozen others. Plus, he not only plays all the major Shakespeare roles, he also does the whole thing as a deranged mental patient.

The show, directed by John Tiffany and Andrew Goldberg, has had sold-out runs at both the National Theatre of Scotland and the Lincoln Center Festival last year. It has matured since the festival,

now sporting more special effects, more blood and a stronger attempt to differentiate the various voices of the play, which had been a problem before.

While there is no doubt about Cumming’s ability — he cowers, he acts menacing, he strips down, he leaps in and out of a full bathtub and smears himself in gore — there is a feeling that while this is an act of Olympic skill, it’s also partly a freak show.

Cumming at first appears as a patient who has undergone some sort of trauma as he’s being processed into a white-tiled mental hospital. The plot of “Macbeth” is sort of a schizophrenic nightmare.

Using a mental patient as the framing device makes intuitive sense for “Macbeth” since the play is filled with visions — “Is this a dagger which I see before me?” — and references to addled brains.

Tornado happen in Denpasar

A small tornado happened on Monday, April 22, in Pulau Ayu and Pulau Adi Street, Denpasar. Because of the disaster, some houses were damaged and two shrined belong to Made Dwi Arya and another one in Puala Adi Street were collapsed.

One of the locals, Putu Suadnyana said that the tornado happened at 4 pm. It was happened suddenly and brief. There was no heavy rain but suddenly very strong wind was coming from the east and west and the same time and forming a small tornado. “At that time, a few of the roofs were shattered,” he added.

Meanwhile, Made Dwi Aryana said that when the tornado came, all of the family

members directly took cover inside the house. They were terrified because the wind was very strong and they were afraid thing would fall on them. “There was a huge sound and when we checked it, the shrines were collapsed,” he said.

The street is filled with damage roofs and the locals in the area are started to clean it. The damage houses are being fixed by the owners. “We fix it right away

because we afraid there will be rain in the next few days,” said the locals in the area.

The Head of Denpasar Disaster handling department (BPBD) Made Sudana Satigraha said that the department still determining the loss after the disaster.

“We still carry out detail inspection so we cannot determine the damage yet,” he added.(kmb21)
