‘Jumanji’ Stays Strong, Topping ‘12 Strong,’ ‘Den of Thieves’ With $20 Million LOS ANGELES - Sony’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” has won its third weekend box office title with ease, topping newcomers “12 Strong” and “Den of Thieves,” with $20 million at 3,704 North American locations.

Afghan war drama “12 Strong” took second with $16.5 million at 3,002 sites for Warner Bros. and STXfilms’ “Den of Thieves” followed with $15.3 million from 2,432 venues.

Fox’s “The Post” finished fourth with $12 million at 2,851 venues and its fifth weekend of “The Greatest Showman” remained a solid draw in fifth with $11 million at 2,823 screens.

“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” has shown remarkable staying power, declining only 28% this weekend and lifting its 33-day North American total to $317 million -- the 61st highest of all time. It’s Sony’s fifth highest domestic grosser of all time, trailing only the first three Spider-Man titles and last summer’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”

“Jumanji” is also singular in winning the box office in its third, fourth and fifth weekends after finishing second in its first two weekends to “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” “This is an unprecedented and unusual box office trajectory for a wide release block-

buster,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with comScore.

The action comedy, starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, has also kept overall domestic business healthy with the year-to-date total at $730.1 million through Sunday, up 2.1% from a year ago.

The weekend’s total hit about $137 million, down 6% from the same frame in 2017 when “Split” opened with $40 million.

“Another great performance by the seemingly unstoppable ‘Jumanji’ powers the pre-Oscar nominations weekend while bolstered by a pair of solid debuts from ‘12 Strong’ and ‘Den of Thieves,’ but this was not enough to beat a tough weekend over weekend comparison to the year ago stellar performance of M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Split,’” Dergarabedian said.

“12 Strong,” starring Chris Hemsworth and Michael Shannon, had been tracking in the $14 million to $17 million range. The movie is based Doug Stanton’s 2009 bestseller “Horse Soldiers,” which centers on CIA paramilitary operations officers and U.S. Special Forces sent to fight the Taliban in Afghanistan immediately after the Sept. 11 attacks. Philippines raises volcano alert again; hazardous eruption seen imminent

MANILA - The Philippines raised the alert level at its Mayon volcano on Monday after a loud explosion in the wake of increased activity made a hazardous eruption likelier, prompting authorities to close all schools and urge residents to stay indoors. Mayon, the country’s most active volcano, has been spewing ash, lava, and pyroclastic material since Jan. 13, displacing close to 40,000 residents in the central province of Albay.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised its alert on Mayon to level 4, signifying a hazardous eruption is imminent, from level 3, which warns that such an eruption could be “weeks or even days” away.

“We strongly advise all people, both residents and tourists, to avoid the danger zone, and airlines to avoid flying near the volcano summit,” agency chief Renato Solidum told a news conference. The danger zone around the 2,462-metre (8,077-foot) volcano has been

expanded to a radius of 8 km (5 miles), he added.

Solidum said the agency had recorded increased seismic activity and “lava fountaining and a summit explosion” from Sunday night, indicating more explosions ahead, including a hazardous eruption. A

level 5 alert signifies a hazardous eruption is underway.

Albay province has run out of emergency funds and more people would be evacuated once government financial help arrived, said provincial governor Al Francis Bichara. He ordered schools to suspend classes, amid ash fall warnings following the explosion at the volcano.

“In some areas...it’s already zero visibility, especially along the foot of the volcano,” he told CNN Philippines, adding that strong winds

could carry ash to distant towns. “(People) have to stay home and if they intend to get out of their houses, they have to wear masks,” Bichara said. Some road sections in South Kuta flooded after heavy rains

MANGUPURA —Heavy rain occurred on Sunday morning (Jan. 21) caused a number of roads in the area of South Kuta to be inundated. The most severe condition occurred on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai at Jimbaran and Nusa Dua intersection. As field observation, a number of vehicles were trapped in puddles on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai. Motorcyclists were forced to push their vehicle to pass through the puddles.

Such puddles are estimated to occur due to high rainfall intensity and small drainage channels covered up by mud and garbage.

Moreover, the holes leading to drainage along the area are minimal. As a result, to accelerate the flow of water local residents had to pierce the road median.

When confirmed, Subdistrict Head of South Kuta, Made Widiana, justified the condition. He explained the puddles occurred at a number of points. As in the area of Jimbaran, there are 3 points of inundation, Ungasan (1 point), Benoa (2 points) and Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai (2 points). Widiana revealed that Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai was already inspected by relevant agencies, including the National Road Agency. At that time, the drains were already normalized from mud and garbage.

Salt production stops due to bad weather

SEMARAPURA —Bad weather hitting the area of Klungkung did not only have impact on chili farms whose harvest plummeted but also on salt production at Belatung Beach, Pesinggahan village, Dawan. The salt production has also stopped since last month.

As seen on Sunday (Jan. 21), no salt production was in operation. The drying place was also completely covered. Similarly, all the spaces for drying processes were closed and so were other processes.

A local salt farmer, Nyoman Warta, said the condition has occurred about since a month ago, along with the presence of bad weather. “Due to frequent rains, we cannot produce salt,” he said.

Production of this crystal spice is very abundant during the summer. Besides, quality of the product is also very good and solid white. “Habitually, the good product is yielded during summer in March to October,” he said.

Amid the zero production, he and his wife, Ni Wayan Sweca, preferred to collect pandan leaves for mats and mosaic stones around his residence. At particular times, he also repairs his salting tools having been defective due to the age. “Now, we have to wait again as cannot do much if the weather is like this,” added this middle-aged farmer.

Another farmer, Ketut Purniasih, mentioned that during normal weather, salt production every two days reaches 20 kilograms. However, since a month ago, such things can no longer be enjoyed. “Our salt has good quality as contains no sand. Due to continuous rain, we cannot produce,” she explained.

The selling price, she said, remains relatively stable, around IDR 25,000 per kilogram. Interestingly, buyers do not only come from Klungkung area but also from Ubud, Gianyar and foreign tourists. They are equally interested in seeing the traditional salt farming. “Our salt stock almost runs thin. This is the rest of production in last season,” she said.

In order to earn extra income, she and her parents produce raw materials of photo album from banana stem to be sold to Gianyar. “Fortunately, we’ve got some orders so that we get additional income,” she said. (kmb45)

“We divide our duties, some officers are deployed to handle the location near Jimbaran intersection and the others in Nusa Dua,” he said.

Yasmara mentioned, the clogging of this water channel was caused by waste and materials carried from the upper regions.

Similarly, near Jimbaran intersection, the water channel was also clogged by garbage. “Floods occurred because of the high intensity of rain bringing waste and drift materials that closed the inlet channel,” he explained. (kmb23)

U.S. tests nuclear power system to sustain astronauts on Mars

Dinosaur tail to be auctioned for Mexico quake reconstruction

MEXICO CITY - A fossilized dinosaur tail discovered in Morocco will be auctioned on Tuesday night in Mexico to raise funds for the reconstruction of thousands of schools damaged by two earthquakes that struck the Latin American nation in September.

The 4-metre-(13-foot)-long, 180-kg (396-pound) tail will be offered at a reserve price of 1.8 million Mexican pesos ($95,805), according to organizer Morton’s Auction House. Anything raised above the reserve price will be donated to the BBVA Bancomer Foundation to help finance the reconstruction of some 5,000 damaged schools.

The extremity belonged to a 17-metre (56-foot), 22-tonne sauropod of the Atlasaurus imelakei species that roamed the Atlas Mountains of Morocco during the Middle Jurassic, some 165 million years ago.

The group of dinosaurs called sauropods were massive four-legged plant-eaters with long necks and long tails, and included the largest land animals ever on Earth.

The two September quakes in Mexico killed an estimated 480 people and caused billions of dollars worth in damage.

“Education is an element of enormous importance for the country, an element of social mobility, that is why we support the reconstruction of schools,” Adolfo Albo, from BBVA Bancomer Foundation, told Reuters.

Albo said the foundation hoped the tail would sell for a lot more than the reserve price.

Moroccan paleontologists took 300 hours to clean the gigantic remains of the reptile, before scientists in Utah pieced them back together.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration and U.S. Department of Energy officials, at a Las Vegas news conference, detailed the development of the nuclear fission system under NASA’s Kilopower project.

Months-long testing began in November at the energy department’s Nevada National Security Site, with an eye toward providing energy for future astronaut and robotic missions in space and on the surface of Mars, the moon or other solar system destinations.

A key hurdle for any longterm colony on the surface of a planet or moon, as opposed to NASA’s six short lunar surface visits from 1969 to 1972, is possessing a power source strong enough to sustain a base but small and light enough to allow for transport through space.

“Mars is a very difficult environment for power systems, with less sunlight than Earth or

the moon, very cold nighttime temperatures, very interesting dust storms that can last weeks and months that engulf the entire planet,” said Steve Jurczyk, associate administrator of NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate.

“So Kilopower ’s compact size and robustness allows us to deliver multiple units on a single lander to the surface that provides tens of kilowatts of power,” Jurczyk added.

Testing on components of the system, dubbed KRUSTY, has been “greatly successful -- the models have predicted very well what has happened, and operations have gone smoothly,” said Dave Poston, chief reactor designer at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Officials said a full-power test will be conducted near the middle or end of March, a bit later than originally planned.

NASA’s prototype power system uses a uranium-235 reactor core roughly the size of a paper towel roll.

President Donald Trump in December signed a directive intended to pave the way for a return to the moon, with an eye toward an eventual Mars mission.

Lee Mason, NASA’s principal technologist for power and energy storage, said Mars has been the project’s main focus, noting that a human mission likely would require 40 to 50 kilowatts of power.

The technology could power habitats and life-support systems, enable astronauts to mine resources, recharge rovers and run processing equipment to transform resources such as ice on the planet into oxygen, water and fuel. It could also potentially augment electrically powered spacecraft propulsion systems on missions to the outer planets. (rtr)

Youngster comes up with new way to get to Nusa Penida DENPASAR — Putu Krisna, a 22-year old man from Sebunibus hamlet, Sakti, Nusa Penida subdistrict, has often faced the tiresome reality of having to wait for hours in Sanur for a boat back to Nusa Penida. Krisna goes to school and works in Bali but finds it hard to go back and forth because there are so few boats. The only way go between Nusa Penida and Bali is by sea either by smaller boat from Sanur or Kusamba or by ferry from Padangbai, Karangasem.

The number of boats is not the only obstacle that Krishna and others face. Buying a ticket for the crossings requires waiting in line and then scrambling to get a ticket. During pilgrimage (tirthayatra) season and during other holidays or in tourism’s high season, throngs of people compete to get tickets to Nusa Penida. During peak seasons, ticket brokers will raise the prices of tickets considerably so people who ned to get home in a hurry have no choice but to buy tickets at inflated prices.

Once a ticket is obtained, it is then hard to get a good seat on the boat.

The number of departures is also limited.

It takes 30-45 minutes to get to Nusa Penida Island from Bali by speedboat. Nusa Penida is an archipelagic region that is part of the district of klungkung and it takes 30-45 minutes to get there from Bali by speedboat. The district of Nusa Penida is comprised three main islands ; Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, so people wanting to get to the smaller islands have to take another boat. Now that the Yellow Bridge connects Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, it is easier to get between these two islands.

In order to overcome some of the obstalces that people face in trying to go between Nusa Penida and Bali, the Island of Nusa Penida and the Island of Bali, Krisna decided to create an online ticket service.

Penidago.com aims to ensure that passengers get a fix rate for ticket prices, departure times and transparency about ticket information. Most importantly, he said this website helps to prevent brokerage practices.

MJOs impact rainfall patterns, atmospheric circulation and surface temperatures in the tropics and sub tropics. MJOs also affects the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle, contributing to the speed of formation and intensity of El Niño and La Nina. Denpasar on Friday (Jan. 19), most regions in Bali are therefore likely to experience light to moderate rain. “There may be heavy rains in the early morning and afternoon accompanied by lightening”, he said.

Ekaputra added that winds tend to remain normal. Winds are currently blowing from the southwest and the west to the east and northeast at speeds of 8-38 km per hour.

“Wind conditions are normal, but people should reamin aware of the potential for heavy rains accompanied by strong winds that will likelu occur is short burst but at speeds higher than 38 km per hour”, he added.

The BBMKG has thus issued a warning for marine activites – especially in the waters of southern Bali, including Kuta and surroundings area inclduing the Badung Strait and the Lombok Strait where waves can range form 0.75 to 2.5 meters high.

Based on weather radar, the height of waves in the souther Badung Strait, southerns Bali Strait on Saturday were as high as 3.5 meters. On January 21rst they were predicted to reach as high as 3 meters. “People should be cautious about conducted marine activities for the next three days”, concluded Ekaputra. (kmb23)

Organic onion cultivation more profitable, Crops can be sold more expensive

BANGLI — The cultivation of onion with organic farming system is more profitable than non-organic farming system. In addition to saving production costs, the onion cultivation with system is also able to make the selling price more expensive. In terms of production cost, for instance, the onion cultivation, including other agricultural commodities with organic systems, can be more efficient than non-organic. With the organic system, farmers no longer need to spend large money to purchase chemical fertilizers, including the maintenance.

Fishermen report fish theft by foreign ships in Ujung-Seraya waters

AMLAPURA — Fishermen at Ujung and Seraya Beach often see foreign ships passing around the waters. They suspect the ships are doing illegal fishing. To know more about the activities of the foreign ships, the fishermen have reported the case to Karangasem Water Police.

Chief of Karangasem Water Police, I Made Wartama, said on Sunday (Jan. 21) that after receiving the report, his authority directly did a patrol. With an operational vessel and a number of personnel, he came down immediately to the point of waters where fishermen refer to through the PadangbaiSeraya-Amed route. The patrol performed from the morning until noon by involving five personnel of water police unit. However, as

long as the police patrolled they did find any foreign ships mentioned.

“The ships have left the location before the patrol officers arrived,” said Wartama.

Wartama and other police personnel had met directly with local fishermen such as I Wayan Bawa from Kesambi village and I Nengah Sada from Bunutan village, Abang subdistrict. They were asked to help oversee the movements of the ship and their habits when being at the point of location around the waters.

“We convince them the waters of Karangasem are safe. Should there be any suspicious things, please be reported to us immediately. We will follow it up soon,” said Wartama.

In addition to following up on the fishermen’s report, the patrol is also searching for the navigation equip-

ment of the depot of Pertamina at Manggis. The navigation equipment is in the form of buoy that is broken and lost from the original position in the middle of the sea. This equipment serves as a guiding tool to tankers wishing to go in and out of the depot of Pertamina Manggis.

However, the navigation equipment lost due to bad weather and has not yet been discovered.

In the meantime, the patrol was also meant to search for fisherman declared to have disappeared since last Sunday (Jan. 7) but did not give any result. Throughout the patrol from the Padangbai Harbor to the Lombok Strait and vice versa, the fisherman was not found. Snow began falling on Monday morning, with as much as 10 cm (4 inches) predicted for central Tokyo by the time it is expected to stop early on Tuesday. By 5:00 p.m. 6 cm (2.4 inches) had fallen in central Tokyo, as the snowfall intensified, NHK national broadcaster said.

Train services were curtailed and some highways were closed, as icy roads were causing traffic accidents. Around 250 flights from Tokyo’s Haneda airport were cancelled.

SEOUL - South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on Monday a thaw in relations between the two Koreas ahead of next month’s Winter Olympics presented a “precious chance” for the United States and North Korea to discuss the North’s weapons programmes.

North Korea is developing missile and nuclear technology amid regular threats to destroy the United States and Japan and in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions, prompting a war of words between the North and the United States.

But after a year of mounting tension, diplomacy focused on sport enabled the International Olympic Committee to announce on Saturday that reclusive North Korea will send 22 athletes to the Feb. 9-25 Games.

The Olympics provided a “precious chance to open the door” for talks to resolve the nuclear issue and establish peace on the peninsula, Moon said at the presidential Blue House.

“But no one can be optimistic about how long the current mood for dialogue will last. We need wisdom and efforts to sustain the dialogue opportunities ... beyond the Olympics so that the inter-Korean talks will lead to talks between the United States and North Korea and other forms of dialogue”.

LONDON - Britain’s economy is likely to do better in 2018 than many forecasts suggest and the benefits of global growth in the coming years will “easily dwarf” any hit from leaving the European Union, former Goldman Sachs economist Jim O’Neill said. O’Neill, a former Treasury minister who backed staying in the EU before the 2016 referendum, told BBC radio that Brexit was a “weird thing for the UK to impose on itself” but it was not the country’s biggest issue.

“I certainly wouldn’t have thought the UK economy would be as robust as it currently seems,” O’Neill, who also previously worked for Goldman Sachs, told the BBC. “That is because it looks to me some parts of the country, led by the northwest (of England), are actually doing way better than people seem to realise or appreciate. “As well as this crucial fact, the rest of the world is doing way better than many people would have thought a year ago, so it makes it easier for the UK.” Britain’s economy, the world’s sixth-biggest, looks set to have slowed only slightly in 2017 when it probably grew around 1.8 percent, according to economists.

Higher inflation caused by the pound’s fall after the Brexit vote has pinched consumer spending power and many firms are wary about what Brexit means for them. While growth has been less impacted by Brexit than many economists forecast, Britain has grown more slowly than other rich nations.

The Bank of England has forecast growth for the UK of 1.6 percent in 2018, but O’Neill predicted stronger expansion as he expected global GDP growth of at least 4 percent. A report this month by Cambridge Econometrics, an economics consultancy, suggested Britain’s economy could be as much as 3 percent smaller by 2030 than it would be if Britain left the EU with

no transition or trade deal.

“If that’s the worst that Brexit will deliver, then I wouldn’t worry about it,” O’Neill told the BBC in an interview aired on Monday.

“Now, my own view is if we go for a really hard Brexit or a no-deal Brexit, we’ll probably suffer more than that 3 percent.

“But if it is only 3 percent, what’s going on with the rest of the world - helping us - and with productivity improving, that will easily dwarf a 3 percent hit over 13 years, easily.”

He said key sectors such as car production and pharmaceuticals still faced threats because of the government’s plan to leave the customs union and the single market. (rtr)

Chief of Sambirenteng customary village, Jro Bendesa Nengah Mas, said that the mecakcakan is a tradition having been carried out from generation to generation. Actually this ceremony is a series of pecaruan (animal sacrifice) at local village. The whole customary villagers are required to submit a rooster to the committee. If villagers do not submit a fighting rooster, it can be replaced with money. After that, the roosters of customary villagers are then pitted in the area of the village shrine.

Uniqueness of this ritual lies in the cockfighting where watching people are not allowed to bet, so that this ritual is free from the impression of gambling.

The losing rooster is slaughtered and cooked together to fill in the ritual oblations. The remaining will be enjoyed together through megibung in the area of the Bale Agung temple. “This ritual is a heritage we’ve received and shall be held every year,” he said.

According to Mas, from his predecessors the Mecakcakan ritual is held every entering the new moon in the seventh month of Balinese calendar (January).

This ritual signifies the devotion of people to God having bestowed prosperity to universe, especially to Sambirenteng village. Besides, it also aims to maintain natural balance from various negative influences. (kmb)

Janger Menyali, Awakening Art Nostalgia of Dutch Occupation Period

Apart from office buildings another heritage left from the Dutch colonial period is the art of Janger that was a popular form of entertainment in Buleleng during the occupation. The Janger from Menyali village, Sawan that emerged during the colonial period has been reconstructed by the Janger Saraswati Art Troupe and was recently performed in the former Buleleng Harbour.

The District of Buleleng will be presenting the Janger Menyali during the 39th Bali Arts Festival

(BAF) in June at the Denpasar Art Center, evoking the heyday of this art form.

The Janger Menyali performance in Buleleng Harbour was especially interesting because it was performed by elderly dancers who had not performed the Janger since the 1960’s and 70’s. The dancers looking dapper in their attire of red berets, badges, shirts, socks and shoes, This costume, he said is different than the one usually worn by more contemporary

Janger dances.

Headman of Menyali, Made Jaya Harta, explained that male Janger dancers used to be known as jipak. Jipak Janger dancers from his village indeed used to be wear costumes inspired by the Dutch Army that was docked at Buleleng Customs (former Buleleng Harbor—Ed). Over time, the style and costume of Janger Menyali changed under the influenced of other arts including “Janger Kreasi”.

“The songs and dance movements are similar but the costumes for “Janger Kresi” are quite different. Janger Menyali is rarely ever performed anymore and was on the verge of disappearing all together before this reconstruction was put together. There was one staging of this dance not too long ago in Lombok”, said Headman Harta.

The reconstruction of Janger Menyali started in Febuary 2017.

It was considered to be impor-

tant to revive this dance as it is believed to be a sacred dance (sanghyang dance). Harta and others are therefor committed to preserving the Janger Menyali dance.

“We have to preserve this ancestral heritage from the Dutch era.

We started to reconstruct this dance by teaming up with the old dancers and then got some younger dancers involved. The result is a dance that can make Buleleng proud” explained Harta. (kmb)

U.S. government workers awake to shutdown, Senate vote looms

WASHINGTON - Hundreds of thousands of federal workers will wake up on Monday with the U.S. government still shut down and the Senate expected to try again to restore federal funding, if only temporarily, and work on resolving a dispute over immigration.

Amid uncertainty about whether federal employees should report to work in the morning, senators were set to vote at midday on a funding bill to get the lights back on in Washington and across the government until early February.

Support for the bill was uncertain, after Republicans and Democrats spent all day on Sunday trying to strike a deal, only to go home for the night short of an agreement.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said late on Sunday that an overnight vote on a measure to fund government operations through Feb. 8 was canceled and would instead be held at 12 p.m. (1700 GMT) on Monday. Up until Monday, most federal workers were not directly affected by the shutdown that began at midnight on Friday.

Many were still awaiting notification on whether they are “essential” employees or not, which would determine whether they must report to their offices.

Even late on Sunday, the federal Office of Personnel Management was providing little guidance. It said on its website that “federal government operations vary by agency.”

The Department of Defense published a memo on its site detailing who does and does not get paid in a shutdown and saying that civilian employees were on temporary leave, except for those needed to support activeduty troops.

The Department of Interior, led by Secretary Ryan Zinke, offered no guidance on its website, which still had a “Happy Holidays from the Zinke Family” video near the top of the site. The department oversees national parks and federal lands.

The State Department website said: “At this time, scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at our posts overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits.” (rtr)

KABUL - Gunmen in army uniforms who stormed Kabul’s Intercontinental Hotel late on Saturday and battled Afghan Special Forces through the night killed more than 30 people and wounded many more, although the final toll of dead and wounded may still be higher.

Wahid Majroh, a spokesman for the ministry of public health, said that 19 bodies had been brought into city hospitals, with six identified as foreigners.

However a senior Afghan security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, said the death toll was over 30 and might climb higher. The dead included hotel staff and guests as well as members of the security forces who fought the attackers.

All five attackers were also killed, interior ministry spokesman Najib Danesh said.

In Kiev, Ukrainian foreign minister Pavlo Klimkin said on Twitter that six Ukrainians were killed in the attack.

The raid was the latest in a series of attacks that have underlined the city’s vulnerability and the ability of militants to mount high-profile

operations aimed at undermining confidence in the Western-backed government.

More than 150 guests were able to flee as parts of the building caught fire, with some shimmying down sheets tied together and dropped from upper-floor windows and others rescued by Afghan forces.

Local airline Kam Air said around 40 of its pilots and air crew, many of whom are foreigners, were staying in the hotel and as many as 10 had been killed. Local media reports said the dead included Venezuelans and Ukrainians.

Zamari Kamgar, the airline’s deputy director, said it was still trying to locate staff.

The Taliban, which attacked the same hotel in 2011, claimed responsibility for the attack, its spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement.

A statement from the interior ministry put the blame on the Haqqani network, a group affiliated with the Taliban that is notorious for its attacks on urban targets.

Abdul Rahman Naseri, a guest who was at the hotel for a conference, was in the hall of the hotel when he saw four gunmen dressed in army uniforms.

“They were shouting in Pashto (language), ‘Don’t leave any of them alive, good or bad’. ‘Shoot and kill them all,’ one of them shouted,” Naseri said.

“I ran to my room on the second floor. I opened the window and tried to get out using a tree but the branch broke and I fell to the ground. I hurt my back and broke a leg.”

Even after officials said the attack was over, sporadic gunshots and explosions could be heard from the site. (rtr)

JAKARTA - Indonesia`s Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti has called on all parties to stop provoking fishermen, to protest the ban on trawler use which is said to be unfriendly to the environment. “Media should be educative and take side with the truth, because if not this country would not move to any direction,” Susi said here on Thursday.

She said, public apathy, skepticism and pessimism would only halt the nation from moving forward.

Therefore, she added, all parties in-

“When the victim was in Mahakam hotel in South Jakarta, [he] saw an account that had posted

pictures of him along with captions that could trigger hatred,” Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said in a statement on Monday.

Argo added that the Jakarta Police’s special crimes investigation directorate was carrying out an investigation to identify the suspect.

Pura Dasar Buana Gelgel

SEMARAPURA - Pura Dasar is a temple whose former glory makes it an interesting tourist attraction for those who would like to learn about Bali’s history.

This temple is located in Gelgel Village, Klungkung. It is not typically a tourist attraction but used as solely a place of worship.

Around 300 years ago when Gelgel was home to the Royal Palace, the temple drew devout locals from all of Bali. The royal family members also worshipped at the temple, something that goes to show the popularity of the temple grounds.

Just like the ‘Mother Temple’, this temple is an ancestral centre of worship. The best thing about visiting this temple is that it is open to all worshippers regardless of social status. There are a number of festivals held at this temple, generally in the months of March and October.

During these festivals, the temple comes alive with vibrant sights and sounds which will be a great experience for travellers during this time.

This temple is free to enter, although donations are gratefully accepted. Visitors must also ensure that they wear a sarong to cover knees and ankles and make sure that shoulders and midriffs are covered.

Pura Dasar Buana History Mpu Ghana is known as Brahmana which has an important role in the development of Hinduism in Bali. He is one of the Panca Tirtra consists of Mpu Gnijaya, Mpu Semeru (Mahameru), Mpu Ghana, Mpu Kuturan and Mpu Bradah (Pradah).

Mpu Ghana came to Bali in 922 Isaka or 1000 AD, during the reign of King Udayana Warmadewa and Gunapriya Dharmapatni on 910 933 Isaka (988 - 1011 AD). Mpu Ghana adopts Ghanapatya teachings and Sukla Brahmacari.

Subsequently in 1189 Isaka (1267 AD), the Mpu Dwijaksara builds a shrine at the site of parahyangan of Mpu Ghana. In the reign of Sri Soma Kepakisan at Isaka 1302 (1380 AD), the shrine become the palace temple by the name of Pura Dasar Buana Gelgel.

Followed by the construction of shrines of the Tri Residents (Satrya Dalem, Pasek and Pande).

Federer makes light of day shift to ease into last eight

MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN U.S. men’s slopestyle skiers Nick Goepper and Gus Kenworthy will both be returning to the Olympics next month after qualifying for the team during competitions on Sunday in Mammoth Mountain.

Goepper qualified during the first final of the day, which was also a World Cup event, when he finished eighth and no other Americans made the podium.

The 23-year-old’s second place finishes in Breckenridge last month and at events in Snowmass last weekend were enough to secure him the spot.

Goepper, the bronze medallist in Sochi during the inaugural slopestyle competition, scored 88.20 on his second run on Sunday in the World Cup event, six points behind Canada’s Teal Harle.

Swiss teenager Andri Ragettli finished second with 92.60, while Canada’s Evan McEachran was third on 91.40.

“It felt great to be able to say I’m on the way to my second Olympics,” said Goepper. “It’s not something a lot of 23-year-olds can say.

“It’s nice to reminisce on the last four years and to have it culminate into another games is great.”

Kenworthy also made the team with a second place finish

in the second men’s competition of the day, which U.S. officials were using as the final slopestyle qualifying event before the Games.

The 26-year-old silver medalist in freestyle skiing in Sochi scored 94.80. McEachran won with 96.40 while Goepper was third with 93.20.

“The last Olympics went by in a flash, a whirlwind,” said Kenworthy.

“This time I want to soak up the experience, really be there for it and make memories that will last a lifetime.”

The U.S. women’s team, however, was still to be decided after Sunday’s competitions with Maggie Voisin the only athlete to have previously qualified.

Caroline Claire made a strong case to be added to the team after her third place finish on Sunday, which marked the 17-year-old’s first Olympic qualifying podium after she scored an 85.00 on the first of her two runs.

She finished behind Norway’s Tiril Sjaastad Christiansen of Norway and Sweden’s Jennie-Lee Burmansson.

MELBOURNE - Roger Federer was a strictly nocturnal beast throughout the first week of the Australian Open but proved just as effective with the sun on his back as he sauntered into the quarter-finals for the 14th time on Monday.

The defending champion did not require his dazzling best against 80th-ranked Hungarian Marton Fucsovics in his first match scheduled during the day session but still emerged a comfortable 6-4 7-6(3) 6-2 winner.

After his earlier-than-usual finish, the 36-year-old world number two said he might even be able to make the most of a night off and take his wife Mirka out for dinner.

“I was considering sunglasses and a towel for the beach but, no, the only thing is the racket strings are a bit tighter but it’s not crazy hot today,” Federer told former champion Jim Courier in a knockabout post-match chat on court.

“It’s a different rhythm playing in the day and not going to bed at 3 a.m. We might go out for dinner tonight but Mirka has left already -- she must have other plans!”

Federer’s light mood matched the sunny conditions and he was even reduced to giggles during one

point late in the second set when he miss-hit a forehand high into the air, then defended three consecutive Fucsovics smashes to win a bizarre rally.

“I practiced with him for a few days in a row in Switzerland. That helped, you know, knowing his

strength and weaknesses a little bit,” he said.

“He was not completely the unknown opponent that maybe people thought he was.

“He hung with me for a long time. So it was a good match.”

MUMBAI - Players of the calibre of Alexis Sanchez do not become available very often so Manchester United had no choice but to make a move for the Arsenal forward, former Ireland defender Denis Irwin has said ahead of the Chilean’s expected move to Old Trafford. Pura Dasar Buana Gelgel

SEMARAPURA - Pura Dasar is a temple whose former glory makes it an interesting tourist attraction for those who would like to learn about Bali’s history.

This temple is located in Gelgel Village, Klungkung. It is not typically a tourist attraction but used as solely a place of worship.

Around 300 years ago when Gelgel was home to the Royal Palace, the temple drew devout locals from all of Bali. The royal family members also worshipped at the temple, something that goes to show the popularity of the temple grounds.

Just like the ‘Mother Temple’, this temple is an ancestral centre of worship. The best thing about visiting this temple is that it is open to all worshippers regardless of social status. There are a number of festivals held at this temple, generally in the months of March and October.

During these festivals, the temple comes alive with vibrant sights and sounds which will be a great experience for travellers during this time.

This temple is free to enter, although donations are gratefully accepted. Visitors must also ensure that they wear a sarong to cover knees and ankles and make sure that shoulders and midriffs are covered.

Pura Dasar Buana History Mpu Ghana is known as Brahmana which has an important role in the development of Hinduism in Bali. He is one of the Panca Tirtra consists of Mpu Gnijaya, Mpu Semeru (Mahameru), Mpu Ghana, Mpu Kuturan and Mpu Bradah (Pradah).

Mpu Ghana came to Bali in 922 Isaka or 1000 AD, during the reign of King Udayana Warmadewa and Gunapriya Dharmapatni on 910 933 Isaka (988 - 1011 AD). Mpu Ghana adopts Ghanapatya teachings and Sukla Brahmacari.

Subsequently in 1189 Isaka (1267 AD), the Mpu Dwijaksara builds a shrine at the site of parahyangan of Mpu Ghana. In the reign of Sri Soma Kepakisan at Isaka 1302 (1380 AD), the shrine become the palace temple by the name of Pura Dasar Buana Gelgel.

Followed by the construction of shrines of the Tri Residents (Satrya Dalem, Pasek and Pande).

Federer makes light of day shift to ease into last eight

MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN U.S. men’s slopestyle skiers Nick Goepper and Gus Kenworthy will both be returning to the Olympics next month after qualifying for the team during competitions on Sunday in Mammoth Mountain.

Goepper qualified during the first final of the day, which was also a World Cup event, when he finished eighth and no other Americans made the podium.

The 23-year-old’s second place finishes in Breckenridge last month and at events in Snowmass last weekend were enough to secure him the spot.

Goepper, the bronze medallist in Sochi during the inaugural slopestyle competition, scored 88.20 on his second run on Sunday in the World Cup event, six points behind Canada’s Teal Harle.

Swiss teenager Andri Ragettli finished second with 92.60, while Canada’s Evan McEachran was third on 91.40.

“It felt great to be able to say I’m on the way to my second Olympics,” said Goepper. “It’s not something a lot of 23-year-olds can say.

“It’s nice to reminisce on the last four years and to have it culminate into another games is great.”

Kenworthy also made the team with a second place finish

in the second men’s competition of the day, which U.S. officials were using as the final slopestyle qualifying event before the Games.

The 26-year-old silver medalist in freestyle skiing in Sochi scored 94.80. McEachran won with 96.40 while Goepper was third with 93.20.

“The last Olympics went by in a flash, a whirlwind,” said Kenworthy.

“This time I want to soak up the experience, really be there for it and make memories that will last a lifetime.”

The U.S. women’s team, however, was still to be decided after Sunday’s competitions with Maggie Voisin the only athlete to have previously qualified.

Caroline Claire made a strong case to be added to the team after her third place finish on Sunday, which marked the 17-year-old’s first Olympic qualifying podium after she scored an 85.00 on the first of her two runs.

She finished behind Norway’s Tiril Sjaastad Christiansen of Norway and Sweden’s Jennie-Lee Burmansson.

MELBOURNE - Roger Federer was a strictly nocturnal beast throughout the first week of the Australian Open but proved just as effective with the sun on his back as he sauntered into the quarter-finals for the 14th time on Monday.

The defending champion did not require his dazzling best against 80th-ranked Hungarian Marton Fucsovics in his first match scheduled during the day session but still emerged a comfortable 6-4 7-6(3) 6-2 winner.

After his earlier-than-usual finish, the 36-year-old world number two said he might even be able to make the most of a night off and take his wife Mirka out for dinner.

“I was considering sunglasses and a towel for the beach but, no, the only thing is the racket strings are a bit tighter but it’s not crazy hot today,” Federer told former champion Jim Courier in a knockabout post-match chat on court.

“It’s a different rhythm playing in the day and not going to bed at 3 a.m. We might go out for dinner tonight but Mirka has left already -- she must have other plans!”

Federer’s light mood matched the sunny conditions and he was even reduced to giggles during one

point late in the second set when he miss-hit a forehand high into the air, then defended three consecutive Fucsovics smashes to win a bizarre rally.

“This one was the biggest joke of a point maybe I have ever played,” he said later. “Thankfully it didn’t decide the outcome of that second set. That would have been too much of a joke, to be honest.”

Federer is yet to drop a set and did not even face a break point against the 25-year-old Fucsovics, who arrived in Melbourne without a grand slam main draw victory to his name.

Yet his unheralded opponent, bidding to become only the third Hungarian man to reach a grand slam quarter-final in the professional era, offered an all-round display that belied his record, even if it did not surprise Federer.

“I practiced with him for a few days in a row in Switzerland. That helped, you know, knowing his

strength and weaknesses a little bit,” he said.

“He was not completely the unknown opponent that maybe people thought he was.

“He hung with me for a long time. So it was a good match.”

Federer was in cruise control in the first set but struck decisively when Fucsovics served at 4-5, squeezing the throttle enough to earn a set point converted with a smash.

Fucsovics kept Federer honest in the second set and played his part in some entertaining rallies to extend the 19-times grand slam champion to a tiebreak.

Federer rifled a running forehand pass to earn three set points and again finished the set at the net, with a smash.

U.S. government workers awake to shutdown, Senate vote looms

WASHINGTON - Hundreds of thousands of federal workers will wake up on Monday with the U.S. government still shut down and the Senate expected to try again to restore federal funding, if only temporarily, and work on resolving a dispute over immigration.

Amid uncertainty about whether federal employees should report to work in the morning, senators were set to vote at midday on a funding bill to get the lights back on in Washington and across the government until early February.

Support for the bill was uncertain, after Republicans and Democrats spent all day on Sunday trying to strike a deal, only to go home for the night short of an agreement.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said late on Sunday that an overnight vote on a measure to fund government operations through Feb. 8 was canceled and would instead be held at 12 p.m. (1700 GMT) on Monday. Up until Monday, most federal workers were not directly affected by the shutdown that began at midnight on Friday.

Many were still awaiting notification on whether they are “essential” employees or not, which would determine whether they must report to their offices.

Even late on Sunday, the federal Office of Personnel Management was providing little guidance. It said on its website that “federal government operations vary by agency.”

The Department of Defense published a memo on its site detailing who does and does not get paid in a shutdown and saying that civilian employees were on temporary leave, except for those needed to support activeduty troops.

The Department of Interior, led by Secretary Ryan Zinke, offered no guidance on its website, which still had a “Happy Holidays from the Zinke Family” video near the top of the site. The department oversees national parks and federal lands.

The State Department website said: “At this time, scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at our posts overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits.” (rtr)

Heavy casualties after overnight battle at Kabul hotel

KABUL - Gunmen in army uniforms who stormed Kabul’s Intercontinental Hotel late on Saturday and battled Afghan Special Forces through the night killed more than 30 people and wounded many more, although the final toll of dead and wounded may still be higher.

Wahid Majroh, a spokesman for the ministry of public health, said that 19 bodies had been brought into city hospitals, with six identified as foreigners.

However a senior Afghan security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, said the death toll was over 30 and might climb higher. The dead included hotel staff and guests as well as members of the security forces who fought the attackers.

All five attackers were also killed, interior ministry spokesman Najib Danesh said.

In Kiev, Ukrainian foreign minister Pavlo Klimkin said on Twitter that six Ukrainians were killed in the attack.

The raid was the latest in a series of attacks that have underlined the city’s vulnerability and the ability of militants to mount high-profile

operations aimed at undermining confidence in the Western-backed government.

More than 150 guests were able to flee as parts of the building caught fire, with some shimmying down sheets tied together and dropped from upper-floor windows and others rescued by Afghan forces.

Local airline Kam Air said around 40 of its pilots and air crew, many of whom are foreigners, were staying in the hotel and as many as 10 had been killed. Local media reports said the dead included Venezuelans and Ukrainians.

Zamari Kamgar, the airline’s deputy director, said it was still trying to locate staff.

The Taliban, which attacked the same hotel in 2011, claimed responsibility for the attack, its spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement.

A statement from the interior ministry put the blame on the Haqqani network, a group affiliated with the Taliban that is notorious for its attacks on urban targets.

Abdul Rahman Naseri, a guest who was at the hotel for a conference, was in the hall of the hotel when he saw four gunmen dressed in army uniforms.

“They were shouting in Pashto (language), ‘Don’t leave any of them alive, good or bad’. ‘Shoot and kill them all,’ one of them shouted,” Naseri said.

“I ran to my room on the second floor. I opened the window and tried to get out using a tree but the branch broke and I fell to the ground. I hurt my back and broke a leg.”

Even after officials said the attack was over, sporadic gunshots and explosions could be heard from the site. (rtr)

LONDON - Britain’s economy is likely to do better in 2018 than many forecasts suggest and the benefits of global growth in the coming years will “easily dwarf” any hit from leaving the European Union, former Goldman Sachs economist Jim O’Neill said. O’Neill, a former Treasury minister who backed staying in the EU before the 2016 referendum, told BBC radio that Brexit was a “weird thing for the UK to impose on itself” but it was not the country’s biggest issue.

“I certainly wouldn’t have thought the UK economy would be as robust as it currently seems,” O’Neill, who also previously worked for Goldman Sachs, told the BBC. “That is because it looks to me some parts of the country, led by the northwest (of England), are actually doing way better than people seem to realise or appreciate. “As well as this crucial fact, the rest of the world is doing way better than many people would have thought a year ago, so it makes it easier for the UK.” Britain’s economy, the world’s sixth-biggest, looks set to have slowed only slightly in 2017 when it probably grew around 1.8 percent, according to economists.

Higher inflation caused by the pound’s fall after the Brexit vote has pinched consumer spending power and many firms are wary about what Brexit means for them. While growth has been less impacted by Brexit than many economists forecast, Britain has grown more slowly than other rich nations.

The Bank of England has forecast growth for the UK of 1.6 percent in 2018, but O’Neill predicted stronger expansion as he expected global GDP growth of at least 4 percent. A report this month by Cambridge Econometrics, an economics consultancy, suggested Britain’s economy could be as much as 3 percent smaller by 2030 than it would be if Britain left the EU with

no transition or trade deal.

“If that’s the worst that Brexit will deliver, then I wouldn’t worry about it,” O’Neill told the BBC in an interview aired on Monday.

“Now, my own view is if we go for a really hard Brexit or a no-deal Brexit, we’ll probably suffer more than that 3 percent.

“But if it is only 3 percent, what’s going on with the rest of the world - helping us - and with productivity improving, that will easily dwarf a 3 percent hit over 13 years, easily.”

He said key sectors such as car production and pharmaceuticals still faced threats because of the government’s plan to leave the customs union and the single market. (rtr)

Chief of Sambirenteng customary village, Jro Bendesa Nengah Mas, said that the mecakcakan is a tradition having been carried out from generation to generation. Actually this ceremony is a series of pecaruan (animal sacrifice) at local village. The whole customary villagers are required to submit a rooster to the committee. If villagers do not submit a fighting rooster, it can be replaced with money. After that, the roosters of customary villagers are then pitted in the area of the village shrine.

Uniqueness of this ritual lies in the cockfighting where watching people are not allowed to bet, so that this ritual is free from the impression of gambling.

The losing rooster is slaughtered and cooked together to fill in the ritual oblations. The remaining will be enjoyed together through megibung in the area of the Bale Agung temple. “This ritual is a heritage we’ve received and shall be held every year,” he said.

According to Mas, from his predecessors the Mecakcakan ritual is held every entering the new moon in the seventh month of Balinese calendar (January).

This ritual signifies the devotion of people to God having bestowed prosperity to universe, especially to Sambirenteng village. Besides, it also aims to maintain natural balance from various negative influences. (kmb)

Janger Menyali, Awakening Art Nostalgia of Dutch Occupation Period

Apart from office buildings another heritage left from the Dutch colonial period is the art of Janger that was a popular form of entertainment in Buleleng during the occupation. The Janger from Menyali village, Sawan that emerged during the colonial period has been reconstructed by the Janger Saraswati Art Troupe and was recently performed in the former Buleleng Harbour.

The District of Buleleng will be presenting the Janger Menyali during the 39th Bali Arts Festival

(BAF) in June at the Denpasar Art Center, evoking the heyday of this art form.

The Janger Menyali performance in Buleleng Harbour was especially interesting because it was performed by elderly dancers who had not performed the Janger since the 1960’s and 70’s. The dancers looking dapper in their attire of red berets, badges, shirts, socks and shoes, This costume, he said is different than the one usually worn by more contemporary

Janger dances.

Headman of Menyali, Made Jaya Harta, explained that male Janger dancers used to be known as jipak. Jipak Janger dancers from his village indeed used to be wear costumes inspired by the Dutch Army that was docked at Buleleng Customs (former Buleleng Harbor—Ed). Over time, the style and costume of Janger Menyali changed under the influenced of other arts including “Janger Kreasi”.

“The songs and dance movements are similar but the costumes for “Janger Kresi” are quite different. Janger Menyali is rarely ever performed anymore and was on the verge of disappearing all together before this reconstruction was put together. There was one staging of this dance not too long ago in Lombok”, said Headman Harta.

The reconstruction of Janger Menyali started in Febuary 2017.

It was considered to be impor-

tant to revive this dance as it is believed to be a sacred dance (sanghyang dance). Harta and others are therefor committed to preserving the Janger Menyali dance.

“We have to preserve this ancestral heritage from the Dutch era.

We started to reconstruct this dance by teaming up with the old dancers and then got some younger dancers involved. The result is a dance that can make Buleleng proud” explained Harta. (kmb)

Organic onion cultivation more profitable, Crops can be sold more expensive

BANGLI — The cultivation of onion with organic farming system is more profitable than non-organic farming system. Continuous application of organic system can also make the seeds of onions more resistant to diseases. The production is also not much different from using chemical fertilizers, even can be more. He cited that if planting 100 kg of onion seeds with an organic system, the harvested yield can reach 800 kg to 1 ton. While using chemical fertilizers, the results obtained ranges from 600 kg to 800 kg. “If using organic system, we can plant for three times in a year on the same land.

Meanwhile, when using chemical fertilizer, to get two times are difficult,” he said.

Fishermen report fish theft by foreign ships in Ujung-Seraya waters

AMLAPURA — Fishermen at Ujung and Seraya Beach often see foreign ships passing around the waters. They suspect the ships are doing illegal fishing. To know more about the activities of the foreign ships, the fishermen have reported the case to Karangasem Water Police.

Chief of Karangasem Water Police, I Made Wartama, said on Sunday (Jan. 21) that after receiving the report, his authority directly did a patrol. With an operational vessel and a number of personnel, he came down immediately to the point of waters where fishermen refer to through the PadangbaiSeraya-Amed route. The patrol performed from the morning until noon by involving five personnel of water police unit. However, as

long as the police patrolled they did find any foreign ships mentioned.

“The ships have left the location before the patrol officers arrived,” said Wartama.

Wartama and other police personnel had met directly with local fishermen such as I Wayan Bawa from Kesambi village and I Nengah Sada from Bunutan village, Abang subdistrict. They were asked to help oversee the movements of the ship and their habits when being at the point of location around the waters.

However, the navigation equipment lost due to bad weather and has not yet been discovered.

In the meantime, the patrol was also meant to search for fisherman declared to have disappeared since last Sunday (Jan. 7) but did not give any result. Throughout the patrol from the Padangbai Harbor to the Lombok Strait and vice versa, the fisherman was not found. Snowstorm in Tokyo disrupts road, rail and air transport

TOKYO - A rare snowstorm hit Tokyo on Monday, snarling train services, forcing the cancellation of scores of flights and prompting hordes of workaholic Japanese to heed official advice to head home early.

Snow began falling on Monday morning, with as much as 10 cm (4 inches) predicted for central Tokyo by the time it is expected to stop early on Tuesday. By 5:00 p.m. 6 cm (2.4 inches) had fallen in central Tokyo, as the snowfall intensified, NHK national broadcaster said.

Train services were curtailed and some highways were closed, as icy roads were causing traffic accidents. Around 250 flights from Tokyo’s Haneda airport were cancelled.

A looming low pressure system and cold front just off the coast of the Japanese main island of Honshu was expected to bring low temperatures and more snow throughout the day and night, the Japanese

Meteorological Agency said.

The Japanese capital, which is on roughly the same latitude as the U.S. city of Raleigh, North Carolina, often sees snow at least once a year, but this time it is expected to accumulate, rather than quickly melt as it usually does.

The government issued heavy snow warnings for the area around the capital, just two weeks after hundreds of people were trapped overnight in a train in northern Japan due to heavy snow.

NHK national broadcaster issued detailed recommendations for coping with the weather, including wearing boots with heavy treads, heading home early and not walking with hands in coat pockets in

case of slips and falls.

SEOUL - South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on Monday a thaw in relations between the two Koreas ahead of next month’s Winter Olympics presented a “precious chance” for the United States and North Korea to discuss the North’s weapons programmes.

North Korea is developing missile and nuclear technology amid regular threats to destroy the United States and Japan and in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions, prompting a war of words between the North and the United States.

But after a year of mounting tension, diplomacy focused on sport enabled the International Olympic Committee to announce on Saturday that reclusive North Korea will send 22 athletes to the Feb. 9-25 Games.

The Olympics provided a “precious chance to open the door” for talks to resolve the nuclear issue and establish peace on the peninsula, Moon said at the presidential Blue House.

“But no one can be optimistic about how long the current mood for dialogue will last. We need wisdom and efforts to sustain the dialogue opportunities ... beyond the Olympics so that the inter-Korean talks will lead to talks between the United States and North Korea and other forms of dialogue”.

While a recent opinion poll showed most South Koreans welcomed the North’s participation in the Games, conservative opponents staged a small but noisy rally as a North Korean delegation inspected venues in Seoul for cultural events to be held on the sidelines of the Olympics.

Moon’s approval rating has fallen to a four-month low at 66 percent, a poll showed on Monday, after a public backlash over the decision on a combined ice hockey team.

U.S. tests nuclear power system to sustain astronauts on Mars

Dinosaur tail to be auctioned for Mexico quake reconstruction

MEXICO CITY - A fossilized dinosaur tail discovered in Morocco will be auctioned on Tuesday night in Mexico to raise funds for the reconstruction of thousands of schools damaged by two earthquakes that struck the Latin American nation in September.

The 4-metre-(13-foot)-long, 180-kg (396-pound) tail will be offered at a reserve price of 1.8 million Mexican pesos ($95,805), according to organizer Morton’s Auction House. Anything raised above the reserve price will be donated to the BBVA Bancomer Foundation to help finance the reconstruction of some 5,000 damaged schools.

The extremity belonged to a 17-metre (56-foot), 22-tonne sauropod of the Atlasaurus imelakei species that roamed the Atlas Mountains of Morocco during the Middle Jurassic, some 165 million years ago.

The group of dinosaurs called sauropods were massive four-legged plant-eaters with long necks and long tails, and included the largest land animals ever on Earth.

The two September quakes in Mexico killed an estimated 480 people and caused billions of dollars worth in damage.

“Education is an element of enormous importance for the country, an element of social mobility, that is why we support the reconstruction of schools,” Adolfo Albo, from BBVA Bancomer Foundation, told Reuters.

Albo said the foundation hoped the tail would sell for a lot more than the reserve price.

Moroccan paleontologists took 300 hours to clean the gigantic remains of the reptile, before scientists in Utah pieced them back together.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration and U.S. Department of Energy officials, at a Las Vegas news conference, detailed the development of the nuclear fission system under NASA’s Kilopower project.

Months-long testing began in November at the energy department’s Nevada National Security Site, with an eye toward providing energy for future astronaut and robotic missions in space and on the surface of Mars, the moon or other solar system destinations.

A key hurdle for any longterm colony on the surface of a planet or moon, as opposed to NASA’s six short lunar surface visits from 1969 to 1972, is possessing a power source strong enough to sustain a base but small and light enough to allow for transport through space.

“Mars is a very difficult environment for power systems, with less sunlight than Earth or

the moon, very cold nighttime temperatures, very interesting dust storms that can last weeks and months that engulf the entire planet,” said Steve Jurczyk, associate administrator of NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate.

“So Kilopower ’s compact size and robustness allows us to deliver multiple units on a single lander to the surface that provides tens of kilowatts of power,” Jurczyk added.

Testing on components of the system, dubbed KRUSTY, has been “greatly successful -- the models have predicted very well what has happened, and operations have gone smoothly,” said Dave Poston, chief reactor designer at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Officials said a full-power test will be conducted near the middle or end of March, a bit later than originally planned.

NASA’s prototype power system uses a uranium-235 reactor core roughly the size of a paper towel roll.

President Donald Trump in December signed a directive intended to pave the way for a return to the moon, with an eye toward an eventual Mars mission.

Lee Mason, NASA’s principal technologist for power and energy storage, said Mars has been the project’s main focus, noting that a human mission likely would require 40 to 50 kilowatts of power.

The technology could power habitats and life-support systems, enable astronauts to mine resources, recharge rovers and run processing equipment to transform resources such as ice on the planet into oxygen, water and fuel. It could also potentially augment electrically powered spacecraft propulsion systems on missions to the outer planets. (rtr)

Youngster comes up with new way to get to Nusa Penida DENPASAR — Putu Krisna, a 22-year old man from Sebunibus hamlet, Sakti, Nusa Penida subdistrict, has often faced the tiresome reality of having to wait for hours in Sanur for a boat back to Nusa Penida. Krisna goes to school and works in Bali but finds it hard to go back and forth because there are so few boats. The only way go between Nusa Penida and Bali is by sea either by smaller boat from Sanur or Kusamba or by ferry from Padangbai, Karangasem.

The number of boats is not the only obstacle that Krishna and others face. Buying a ticket for the crossings requires waiting in line and then scrambling to get a ticket. During pilgrimage (tirthayatra) season and during other holidays or in tourism’s high season, throngs of people compete to get tickets to Nusa Penida. During peak seasons, ticket brokers will raise the prices of tickets considerably so people who ned to get home in a hurry have no choice but to buy tickets at inflated prices.

Once a ticket is obtained, it is then hard to get a good seat on the boat.

The number of departures is also limited.

It takes 30-45 minutes to get to Nusa Penida Island from Bali by speedboat. Nusa Penida is an archipelagic region that is part of the district of klungkung and it takes 30-45 minutes to get there from Bali by speedboat. The district of Nusa Penida is comprised three main islands ; Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, so people wanting to get to the smaller islands have to take another boat. Now that the Yellow Bridge connects Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, it is easier to get between these two islands.

In order to overcome some of the obstalces that people face in trying to go between Nusa Penida and Bali, the Island of Nusa Penida and the Island of Bali, Krisna decided to create an online ticket service.

Ekaputra added that winds tend to remain normal. Winds are currently blowing from the southwest and the west to the east and northeast at speeds of 8-38 km per hour.

“Wind conditions are normal, but people should reamin aware of the potential for heavy rains accompanied by strong winds that will likelu occur is short burst but at speeds higher than 38 km per hour”, he added.

The BBMKG has thus issued a warning for marine activites – especially in the waters of southern Bali, including Kuta and surroundings area inclduing the Badung Strait and the Lombok Strait where waves can range form 0.75 to 2.5 meters high.

Based on weather radar, the height of waves in the souther Badung Strait, southerns Bali Strait on Saturday were as high as 3.5 meters. Some road sections in South Kuta flooded after heavy rains

MANGUPURA —Heavy rain occurred on Sunday morning (Jan. 21) caused a number of roads in the area of South Kuta to be inundated. The most severe condition occurred on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai at Jimbaran and Nusa Dua intersection. As field observation, a number of vehicles were trapped in puddles on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai. Motorcyclists were forced to push their vehicle to pass through the puddles.

Such puddles are estimated to occur due to high rainfall intensity and small drainage channels covered up by mud and garbage.

Moreover, the holes leading to drainage along the area are minimal. As a result, to accelerate the flow of water local residents had to pierce the road median.

When confirmed, Subdistrict Head of South Kuta, Made Widiana, justified the condition. He explained the puddles occurred at a number of points. As in the area of Jimbaran, there are 3 points of inundation, Ungasan (1 point), Benoa (2 points) and Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai (2 points). Widiana revealed that Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai was already inspected by relevant agencies, including the National Road Agency. At that time, the drains were already normalized from mud and garbage.

Salt production stops due to bad weather

SEMARAPURA —Bad weather hitting the area of Klungkung did not only have impact on chili farms whose harvest plummeted but also on salt production at Belatung Beach, Pesinggahan village, Dawan. The salt production has also stopped since last month.

As seen on Sunday (Jan. 21), no salt production was in operation. The drying place was also completely covered. Similarly, all the spaces for drying processes were closed and so were other processes.

A local salt farmer, Nyoman Warta, said the condition has occurred about since a month ago, along with the presence of bad weather. “Due to frequent rains, we cannot produce salt,” he said.

Production of this crystal spice is very abundant during the summer. Besides, quality of the product is also very good and solid white. “Habitually, the good product is yielded during summer in March to October,” he said.

Amid the zero production, he and his wife, Ni Wayan Sweca, preferred to collect pandan leaves for mats and mosaic stones around his residence. At particular times, he also repairs his salting tools having been defective due to the age. “Now, we have to wait again as cannot do much if the weather is like this,” added this middle-aged farmer.

Another farmer, Ketut Purniasih, mentioned that during normal weather, salt production every two days reaches 20 kilograms. However, since a month ago, such things can no longer be enjoyed. “Our salt has good quality as contains no sand. Due to continuous rain, we cannot produce,” she explained.

The selling price, she said, remains relatively stable, around IDR 25,000 per kilogram. Interestingly, buyers do not only come from Klungkung area but also from Ubud, Gianyar and foreign tourists. They are equally interested in seeing the traditional salt farming. “Our salt stock almost runs thin. This is the rest of production in last season,” she said.

In order to earn extra income, she and her parents produce raw materials of photo album from banana stem to be sold to Gianyar. “Fortunately, we’ve got some orders so that we get additional income,” she said. (kmb45)

Yasmara mentioned, the clogging of this water channel was caused by waste and materials carried from the upper regions.

Similarly, near Jimbaran intersection, the water channel was also clogged by garbage. “Floods occurred because of the high intensity of rain bringing waste and drift materials that closed the inlet channel,” he explained. (kmb23)

‘Jumanji’ Stays Strong, Topping ‘12 Strong,’ ‘Den of Thieves’ With $20 Million LOS ANGELES - Sony’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” has won its third weekend box office title with ease, topping newcomers “12 Strong” and “Den of Thieves,” with $20 million at 3,704 North American locations.

Afghan war drama “12 Strong” took second with $16.5 million at 3,002 sites for Warner Bros. and STXfilms’ “Den of Thieves” followed with $15.3 million from 2,432 venues.

Fox’s “The Post” finished fourth with $12 million at 2,851 venues and its fifth weekend of “The Greatest Showman” remained a solid draw in fifth with $11 million at 2,823 screens.

“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” has shown remarkable staying power, declining only 28% this weekend and lifting its 33-day North American total to $317 million -- the 61st highest of all time. Philippines raises volcano alert again; hazardous eruption seen imminent

MANILA - The Philippines raised the alert level at its Mayon volcano on Monday after a loud explosion in the wake of increased activity made a hazardous eruption likelier, prompting authorities to close all schools and urge residents to stay indoors. Mayon, the country’s most active volcano, has been spewing ash, lava, and pyroclastic material since Jan. 13, displacing close to 40,000 residents in the central province of Albay.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised its alert on Mayon to level 4, signifying a hazardous eruption is imminent, from level 3, which warns that such an eruption could be “weeks or even days” away.

“We strongly advise all people, both residents and tourists, to avoid the danger zone, and airlines to avoid flying near the volcano summit,” agency chief Renato Solidum told a news conference. The danger zone around the 2,462-metre (8,077-foot) volcano has been

expanded to a radius of 8 km (5 miles), he added.

Solidum said the agency had recorded increased seismic activity and “lava fountaining and a summit explosion” from Sunday night, indicating more explosions ahead, including a hazardous eruption. A

level 5 alert signifies a hazardous eruption is underway.

Albay province has run out of emergency funds and more people would be evacuated once government financial help arrived, said provincial governor Al Francis Bichara. He ordered schools to suspend classes, amid ash fall warnings following the explosion at the volcano.

British singer Ed Sheeran gets engaged to school friend Cherry Seaborn

LONDON - British singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran said on Saturday he is engaged to longtime friend Cherry Seaborn, whom he first met at school at the age of 11.

“Got myself a fiancé just before new year,” he wrote on an Instagram photo of him and Seaborn.

“We are very happy and in love, and our cats are chuffed as well xx.”

Sheeran, 26, and accountant Seaborn, 25, were pupils at the same school in Suffolk, eastern England and began dating in

2015.

The ginger-haired Grammy winner has enjoyed a string of hits since his debut album + (Plus) topped the UK charts in 2011 and reached No. 5 in the United States.

His single “Shape of You” was 2017’s biggest selling single in the UK, according to the Official Charts Company, and “Perfect”,
