Ferguson film ‘Whose Streets?’ aims to show humanity of community

PARK CITY - The filmmakers of “Whose Streets?,” chronicling the uprising in Ferguson, Missouri after the 2014 police killing of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown, said the documentary attempts to show the humanity behind a community in crisis.

“Whose Streets?” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this week and follows the Ferguson community as they protested Brown’s death, which led to weeks of tense unrest that drew worldwide interest.

The film, co-directed by Sabaah Folayan and Missouri resident Damon Davis, combines social media and amateur footage with original footage depicting the actions of key people in the community.

“When mainstream media isn’t

committed to solving these problems but is more committed to ratings, when politicians are so partisan that they’re confusing us, it becomes up to artists to show people the way,” Folayan said.

At this year’s festival, four films in the documentary competition delve into the impact of the Black Lives Matter movement that rose out of killings of Brown and other black men by police in various U.S. cities in the past years. (rtr)

Women lead unprecedented worldwide mass protests against Trump

WASHINGTON - Hundreds of thousands of women filled the streets of major American cities to lead an unprecedented wave of international protests against President Donald Trump, mocking and denouncing the new U.S. leader the day after his inauguration.

Women activists, outraged by Trump’s campaign rhetoric and behavior they found to be especially misogynistic, spearheaded scores of of marches in the United States and sympathy rallies around the world on Saturday. Organizers said they drew nearly 5 million protesters in all, far surpassing crowd expectations.

The demonstrations also highlighted strong discontent over Trump’s comments and policy positions toward a wide range of groups, including Mexican immigrants, Muslims, the disabled and environmentalists.

In contrast to the heated, often shrill tone of the presidential campaign, and

the grim imagery of “American carnage” Trump evoked in his inaugural address, the mood during Saturday’s protests was largely upbeat, even festive.

Chanting such slogans as, “We need a real leader, not a creepy tweeter,” and “Hey-hey, ho-ho, Donald Trump has got to go,” many marchers wore knitted pink cat-eared “pussy hats” in a reference to Trump’s boast, in a 2005 video made public weeks before the election, about grabbing women by the genitals.

While women constituted the bulk of the demonstrators, many were accompanied by husbands, boyfriends and children.

The planned centerpiece of the protests, a Women’s March on Washington, appeared to draw larger crowds than turned out a day earlier to witness Trump’s swearing-in on the steps of the U.S. Capitol.

No official estimates of the turnout were available, but it clearly exceeded the 200,000 marchers projected in advance by organizers, filling long stretches of downtown Washington around the White House and the National Mall.

Importance of entrepreneurship for young generation

AS the country with the fourth largest population in the world, Indonesia has the potential to develop its economy. The population is not only the player in the economic development but also serves as a market for business sector.

Unfortunately, the increase in population does not necessarily contribute to improving the ability of local people’s economy.

It can be seen from the annual growth rate of population of Indonesia reaching 1.49 percent or about 4.5 million people. However, according to Central Statistic Agency (BPS) of Indonesia, the economic growth rate in 2015 has decreased, namely 4.8 percent only. It happened because some problems arising as a result of inflation, unemployment and other economic problems. To realize a developed country, at least 2 percent of the population should be entrepreneurs.

With large number of population, Indonesia only has 1.65 percent of it becoming entrepreneurs, so that it still left behind compared to other ASEAN countries such as Singapore having the entrepreneurs as much as 7 percent (of the population), Malaysia (5 percent) and Thailand (3 percent),” said Minister of Cooperatives and the SMEs, AAG Ngurah Puspayoga, in the Jury of the National Independent Entrepreneurial Program 2014 at Wisma Mandiri Club on Jalan Mataram, South Jakarta.

To that end, the entrepreneurial habit should be instilled from childhood, or put into school curriculum. Why is young entrepreneur so important? It happens because currently many graduates are unemployed due to incomparable growth of job opportunity to the number graduates that ultimately increases the number of unemployment. If younger generations are already accustomed to entrepreneurship from school age, certainly after graduating they will not become job seekers. Instead they will become job creators, and they are likely to live in prosperity.

Entrepreneurship is basically one’s ability to see and assess business opportunities and gather resources needed to take appro-

priate action and take advantage of it in order to achieve success.

Public awareness, especially the young generation, of becoming entrepreneurs in Indonesia is still low. They still have orientation in looking for job mainly applying to be a civil servant or employees of companies whose vacancies are limited.

In Indonesia, the number of bachelor graduates each year is not comparable to the existing job opportunities. Each year, state and private colleges hold at least twice graduations with an average of 250,000 bachelors and only about 10,000 people can be absorbed in the job market nationally and globally (Soefijanto 2012).

Pursuant to the BPS report, the open unemployment rate in February 2016 amounted to 5.5 percent. It means that of the 100 existing workforce there are about five to six unemployed people. When compared to previous period or February 2015, the open unemployment decreased by 0.31 percent. Nevertheless, the open unemployment rate for university graduate (undergraduate) has increased significantly.

The unemployment of educated graduates is recorded to increase from 5.34 percent in February

2015 to 6.22 percent in February 2016.

Entrepreneur is the forerunner of SME business. To develop and increase the number of SMEs in Indonesia, it depends on how to improve the mentality of the youth in entrepreneurship.

Younger generation should have mentality that is not afraid of failing as well as dares to try.

Daring to take risk is one of the ways to build a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Many people are afraid of competition against foreign companies having great capital, so that it discourages the mentality of Indonesian young entrepreneurs.

Actually, the competition occurs does not to bring down each other among the employers, but it is going to further motivate the entrepreneurs to innovate in the production, distribution, and marketing. Without competition, there will be no challenges to innovate continuously.

If young people are aware of the importance of entrepreneurship, they will surely reduce job seekers and the number of unemployment in Indonesia. Therefore, as citizen and young people they should never be lulled in a comfort zone under the funding of parents, so that they will forget the position as successor that will increase challenges in the future.

So, let’s build entrepreneurship for our future and of our nation. (kmb)

Buleleng lacks dozens of doctors and nurses

SINGARAJA - Insistence of Commission IV of the Buleleng House of Representatives to appoint contract doctors and nurses was responded by the Buleleng Health Agency. Health Agency will overcome the crisis of doctors and nurses by appointing doctors and nurses through contract system. From existing data, the entire community health center and primary hospital at Tangguwisia village, Seririt, lack 81 personnel of general practitioners, dentists and nurses.

Head of the Buleleng Health Agency, IGN Mahapramana, recently said in the parliamentary building that the region lacks general practitioners, dentists and nurses at 20 health centers either those having provided hospitalization or outpatient services only. In addition, the same condition is experienced by the primary (non-class) hospital at Tangguwisia village, Seririt. This condition has long happened and peaked when central government imposes civil servant recruitment moratorium.

In addition to the health centers and primary hospital, Buleleng Hospital is still experiencing some shortages of medical specialist. Similarly, it happened due to the policy of central government that has closed civil servant recruitment since the past few years. Besides, the hospital has difficulty in obtaining additional medical specialists because the graduates from renowned universities in Bali, including from outside the region, are not interested to serve in Buleleng Hospital.

Moreover, the effort to increase medical specialist through contract system has not been optimal, so that this issue remains to be a stumbling block to hospitals in improving public health services.

“Since there has been no appointment for long time, the shortage continues to grow. As a result, there are health centers having provided hospitalized services, but only having one doctor with civil servant status. We’ve been adding to contract officers but have not been maximized. The most difficult issue faced by hospitals is in getting a medical specialist,” he said.

According to Mahapramana, based on the existing data the agency lacks 20 general practitioners for health centers and 31 people for non-class hospitals. Ideally, the government employs 83 general practitioners. However, until this year all the health centers and non-class hospitals are only filled in by 57 general practitioners.

Dentists also experienced similar condition, where the ideal number is 42 people, but currently the government can only have met 30 people, so that it still lacks 12 people. In the meantime, the government should ideally assign as many as 228 nurses, but so far the position can only be filled in by 198 personnel. Thus, Buleleng still lack 38 nurses.

“It is in accordance with our data and in the whole we still lack many personnel. In essence we agree to the desire of the parliament to ask for the formation of civil servant to central government,” he explained.

With regard to the appointment plan of contract doctors and nurses, Mahapramana said that the effort is still examined by considering financial condition of the district government.

Admittedly, the appointment of contract doctor and nurse is indeed effective to overcome the crisis of doctors and nurses, but their qualification is specific and must be supported by the ability of regional budget to pay their salaries. Clearly, appointment of the doctors or nurses will be carried out in accordance with the mechanism and regulation, including promoting transparency without neglecting their quality and qualifications.

“The solution is by appointing doctors or nurses through contract system. Nevertheless, this must be learned and examined in details particularly in the matter of budget preparedness,” added Mahapramana. (kmb38)

DENPASAR — A former Reuters war correspondent on trial in Indonesia on charges of possessing hashish faces up to four years in prison, a prosecutor said Thursday.

David Fox, a British national, was arrested Oct. 8 along with Australian Giuseppe Serafino on the tourist island of Bali. Police said they confiscated a total of 10.09 grams (0.36 ounces) of hashish from Fox’s clothing and house.

He is being tried at the Denpasar District Court, where prosecutor Erawati Susina said he could face a maximum four years in prison. Serafino is being tried separately and faces the same possible sentence.

Police said Fox, 55, told them he had used the drug for years to overcome stress caused by covering conflicts.

He worked for Reuters for 20 years but was fired

in 2011 for making an off-color remark in an instantmessaging system while covering the 2011 Japan tsunami and nuclear meltdowns.

Bali police first raided the house of Serafino in Sanur, a beachside town and resort area, where they reportedly seized 7.32 grams (0.26 ounces) of hashish. His arrest led to the detention of Fox at a bar run by Serafino.

Serafino, 49, told police he had used the drug since 2007 after being diagnosed with lip cancer.

Indonesia has extremely strict drug laws and convicted smugglers are often executed. More than 150 people are on death row, mostly for drug crimes. About a third of them are foreigners.

Eighteen people convicted of drug-related offenses, mostly foreigners, have been executed since President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo took office in October 2014. (ap)

Killed, body of woman put into sack Head injured, neck ensnared with trap DENPASAR - When the residents of Sidakarya, South Denpasar, precisely on Jalan Kerta Dalem, were busy celebrating Saraswati feast day on Saturday (Jan. 21), they were surprised with the finding of a sack floating in Punggawa River. Having been opened, it turned out to contain a dead woman suspected of being a murder victim.

“It was found around 08:00, exactly in front of a house number 100X. Our personnel are still doing crime scene investigation. Its identity has not been known or Mrs. X,” said a source in the Denpasar police.

The source added that based on explanation of Made Kara, 57, living at Jalan Sidakarya 44 at 07:30 as usual after opening his stall in front of the scene he looked to Punggawa River. At that time, he saw a suspicious large sack.

Furthermore, Kara told the river janitor, Wayan Kadra, 48, who happened to be cleaning up at that time.

They both then checked the content of the sack. Kadra who lives on Jalan Bedugul Gang Gagak, Sidakarya, came down to the river. After it was pulled by using cleaning tool, he saw people’s hair coming out. Kadra straightly went up and reported the finding to pecalang (customary security guard) to be forwarded to the South Denpasar Police. At 09:30, the identification team of Denpasar police arrived at

the scene. The victim’s body was then evacuated and carried up to the road.

“Crime scene investigation was led in person by Chief of Denpasar Police,” said a source who asked for anonymity.

From the results of initial examination, the victim is known to be female without identity, estimated to be 40 years of age, and has fatty posture with the height of about 150 centimeters, put on black T-shirt but wearing no pants. There are three open wounds on the back of the head alleged to have been caused by strike of sharp weapon and her neck was alleged to have been ensnared by strap and the body was put into a sewn white sack

but at leg’s part of the plastic sack was torn.

“At the crime scene was also found a hand phone of NX brand.

At 10:00, the victim’s body was taken to Sanglah Hospital by using ambulance of the regional disaster mitigation agency or BPBD Bali,” he added.

Chief of Denpasar Police, Hadi Purnomo, accompanied by Chief of Criminal Investigation Unit, Reinhard, said that his institution was still exploring to examine witnesses. Main focus of the investigation is to uncover the victim’s identity. “Our personnel are still at the crime scene and witnesses are still being questioned. We are now waiting for the results of the autopsy,” he stated. (kmb36)

Both foreign citizens are pursued by Belgian police because they were reported missing by their family. So, police are looking for them to Nusa Penida. Moreover, their presence (Yvan Meers and Lina Keil) is known to have hung around a few days in the area of Nusa Penida. Moreover, they are known to have eaten and stayed at a local bungalow. So, to ensure the correctness of the information, the personnel of Belgian police assisted by personnel of Bali police and Nusa Penida police came down to look for information about them.

At least 36 killed as Indian train derails

BHUBANESWAR - At least 36 people were killed and 50 injured on Saturday night when nine coaches of a passenger train derailed in eastern India, in the latest disaster to hit the vast and accident-prone state railways, police said.

The Hirakhand express train from Jagdalpur to Bhubaneswar derailed at around 11:20 pm near Kuneri station, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, around 30 km (18 miles) outside the town of Rayagada.

“The rescue operation is almost over,” said J.P. Mishra, the chief public relations officer at East Coast Railway, which has jurisdiction over the area where the derailment occurred.

“Our first priority is to take care of the injured passengers and provide them proper treatment by shifting them to hospitals. We are also searching all the coaches to ensure that nobody remains stranded in them,” he said.

The reason for the derailment has not been ascertained, said Mishra, adding

that they were not ruling out any possibility of foul play and investigations will be conducted. The incident area is one where Maoist rebels typically operate.

Video footage from the scene showed members of the disaster management team and locals trying to rescue trapped passengers from windows and debris using phones to provide light with the train’s bogie wheels tilted off the railway track and mangled wreckage all over the spot.

“Nine bogies were derailed of which three have turned and fallen off the track,” said local Superintendent of Police L.K.V. Ranga Rao. “Most of the casualties and deaths are from the three sleeper-class compartments.”

safety record - the result of decades of underinvestment and a priority on keeping fares low for the 23 million passengers who use the network every day.

In the last serious accident, 150 people died when a train derailed late last year in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. India recorded 27,581 railway deaths in 2014, the most recent year for which figures are available, with most victims falling from, or being struck by, moving trains.

“Anguished to learn about the train accident near Vizianagaram,” Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said on Twitter, offering his condolences to the families of the victims.

“We are investigating the reason for accident.”

BEIRUT - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s opponents appear more divided than ever as they prepare for peace talks next week, demoralised by their defeat in Aleppo and unable to unite into a single force to defend their remaining territory.

The new diplomacy led by Assad’s Russian allies has exposed yet more splits in a rebellion that has never had a clear chief, with rebel factions long fractured by regional rivalries, their ties to foreign states, and an ideological battle over whether to pursue Syrian national or Sunni jihadist goals.

Several leaders have became prominent only to be killed in the nearly six-year-old conflict and numerous military and political coalitions have come and gone.

After the rebels’ defeat in Aleppo last month, the latest effort to unify the jihadist and moderate wings of the insurgency collapsed.

By contrast Assad is as strong as at any time since the fighting began, his Russian and Iranian backers committed to his survival while the differing agendas of foreign states backing the rebels have added to their divisions.

The delegation of rebels that will attend the talks with the Syrian government starting on Monday in the Kazakh capital Astana represents only part of the moderate opposition that has fought Assad in a loose alliance known as the Free Syrian Army.

Most are from groups fighting in northern Syria with the backing of Turkey. Other rebel groups seen closer to the United States and Saudi Arabia have been left out.

Alloush, who lives outside Syria, has not been appointed to the role because he wields influence over the rebellion as a whole -- he does not. He was chosen because he is a member of the High Negotiations Committee (HNC), an alliance set up with Saudi and Western support in 2015.

The HNC itself, the broadest opposition body formed since the war began, has not been invited to Astana.Its chairman, former prime minister Riad Hijab, is the nearest thing the moderate opposition has to “a face”. But his role is closer to that of a spokesman for the myriad groups on the ground and he will not be in Astana either.

The HNC has said it hopes the Astana talks will be a step towards new peace talks in Geneva. But while Russia says Astana aims to supplement Geneva, some in the opposition fear Moscow is trying to supplant the U.N.-backed process with its own and wants to increase divisions in the rebel camp. SYDNEY - A 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck off Papua New Guinea (PNG) on Sunday, but there were no reports of casualties or damage after a potential tsunami did not occur.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) downgraded the quake from an initial measurement of magnitude 8. It struck some 47

kms (29 miles) west of Arawa on the north coast of Bougainville Island at a depth of 154 km (96 miles), the USGS reported.

An initial tsunami alert for several Pacific islands was wound back to cover just PNG and the neighbouring Solomon Islands and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center later said the tsunami

threat had passed safely for those countries.

Quakes are common in Papua New Guinea, which sits on the Pacific’s “Ring of Fire”, a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates.

Loti Yates, the director of the Solomon Islands National Disaster Management Office, said people

had been told to move to higher ground in Choiseul and Western Province.

Chris McKee, assistant director at PNG’s Geophysical Observatory Office in Port Moresby, said there were no initial reports of damage or casualties from near the epicentre of the quake, which is sparsely populated.

Australia and New Zealand both said they had assessed the threat and there was no danger to their coastlines.

Bougainville Island is one of the islands that make up the Autonomous Region of Bougainville within Papua New Guinea (PNG) which is home to around 300,000 people. (rtr)

BUSINESS Germany must prepare for ‘rough ride’ under Trump -Vice Chancellor

BERLIN - Germany will need a new economic strategy geared toward Asia should the new U.S. administration start a trade war with China, Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel said on Friday, warning against protectionism hours after President Donald Trump was sworn in.

“I think we have to prepare for a rough ride,” Gabriel said in an interview with the public broadcaster ZDF, in the first official German reaction to Trump’s inauguration. He added that Trump’s election was the result of “a bad radicalisation”.

The leader of the left-leaning Social Democrats (SPD), coalition partners of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s ruling conservatives, dismissed suggestions that Trump may not pursue some controversial promises, such as imposing high tariffs on cars imported from Mexico.

“He means it extremely seriously,” said Gabriel. “What we heard today were high nationalistic tones.”

He added that all that was missing from Trump’s speech was comparing parliament to a “Quasselbude” or “talking shop,” a term used by Hitler before he took power to discredit the parliamentary democracy of the Weimar Republic in the 1920s.

Gabriel said the European Union and Germany must stand together “to defend our interests” and to prevent such nationalistic fervour

from gripping the continent.

Germany will hold a general election in September in which the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is expected to enter the national parliament for the first time.

‘CHINA OFFERS NEW OPPORTUNITIES’ Trump has criticized Merkel’s decision in 2015 to throw open Germany’s borders to asylum seekers fleeing wars and conflicts in the Middle East and elsewhere and has said he believes other countries will leave the EU after Britain.

Merkel, who had a close relationship with former U.S. president Barack Obama, responded to his comments in a newspaper interview earlier this month by saying that Europe’s destiny was in its own hands.

German government sources told Reuters this week that Merkel was working to set a date this spring for a meeting with Trump.

Dollar falls, stocks pare gains after Trump inauguration NEW YORK - The dollar was down but U.S. stock indexes pared their gains in the last day of a choppy trading week, after Donald Trump’s inaugural speech as U.S. President prompted investor concern about protectionist trade policies.

U.S. Treasury yields fell slightly as Trump spoke but were still up on the day.

The dollar, which has lost some of its momentum in recent weeks, was off 0.2 percent against six major currencies. It hit a session low during the speech before paring losses.

In his speech Trump, the country’s 45th President, promised to put ‘America First’ and that the U.S. would follow two rules: buy American and hire American.

“There’s a concern about what his trade policies will be,” said Jamie Cox, managing partner of Harris Financial Group, after he

attended the inauguration in Washington D.C. “That’s probably the No. 1 area where Trump will have to tone down his rhetoric because we do have to work with other nations.”

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 57 points, or 0.29 percent, to 19,789.4, the S&P 500 had gained 4.68 points, or 0.206742 percent, to 2,268.37 and the Nasdaq Composite had added 9.86 points, or 0.18 percent, to 5,549.94.

The benchmark S&P 500 was on track to end the week down slightly, and both the Dow and Nasdaq were each set for weekly declines.

The S&P 500 has fallen a median 2.7 percent in the month after each new president has taken the keys to the White House since Herbert Hoover did so in January 1929, according to Reuters analysis.(rtr)

White House lashes out at media ‘lies’ about inauguration crowds

WASHINGTON - Donald Trump has accused the media of lying about the turnout at his inauguration ceremony - and warned reporters are going to pay a “big price” for their alleged dishonesty.

The President insisted that crowds at the event stretched back all the way to the Washington Monument, even though photographs and footage from the scene showed large, empty spaces around the landmark.

Press Secretary Sean Spicer went one further during a heated White House briefing on Saturday night, describing it as “the largest audience ever to witness an inauguration, period”.He also claimed that white “floor coverings” used to protect the grass during the ceremony had unfairly drawn attention to empty spaces on the National Mall.

With pictures from Mr Trump’s inauguration on TV screens beside him, Mr Spicer added: “Attempts to lessen the enthusiasm of the inauguration are shameful and wrong.”

Although the National Park Service no longer provides estimates of crowds at inaugurations, photographic evidence shows substantially more people turned out for Barack Obama’s ceremony in 2009.

Mr Spicer also criticised a reporter who wrongly stated that President Trump has removed a bust of Martin Luther King Jr from the Oval Office.

Mexico’s president to meet with Trump amid populist pressure at home

MEXICO - Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and U.S. President Donald Trump will meet at the end of this month to discuss trade, immigration and security issues, as the Latin American leader faces increased populist pressure at home.

Trump’s spokesman Sean Spicer told a news conference on Saturday that the two leaders will meet on Jan. 31, the week after senior officials of both administrations hold bilateral talks in Washington.

Trump is committed to renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and would move to withdraw if no “fair deal” is forthcoming, according to the White House website.

Pena Nieto, whose popularity has plummeted due to corruption scandals and rising inflation, has been criticized for lacking a clear strategy to counter Trump’s threats to crimp trade and deport illegal immigrants.

Seeking to capitalize on that discontent, Mexican 2018 presidential forerunner Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Saturday said he would tour major U.S. cities starting in February.

Indonesia watchdog says former CEO of airline Garuda a bribery suspect

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s anti-corruption agency said on Thursday it was treating the former chief executive of airline PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk as a suspect in a bribery case.

Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said in a statement the CEO of Garuda from 2005 to 2014 was suspected of taking bribes related to the purchase of planes and machines from Airbus and Rolls-Royce.

The KPK did not refer to the former CEO by name but, as is its custom, used initials - in this case “ESA”. The CEO of Garuda from 2005 to 2014 was Emirsyah Satar, who is now chairman of Indonesian conglomerate Lippo Group’s e-commerce platform MatahariMall.com.

In a phone message to Reuters, Satar denied wrongdoing but said that it was the authority of the KPK to name him as a suspect and that he will respect the legal process. “As far as I know, when I was the CEO of PT Garuda Indonesia, I had never done corrupt activities and I did not receive anything that was related to my position,” Satar said.

MatahariMall said it supported the legal process in Indonesia, but declined further comment. Rolls-Royce did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A spokesman for Airbus said the company had no

comment on the issue.

The KPK said it found evidence that “ESA” had received 20 billion rupiah ($1.5 million) of cash and items worth $2 million in Singapore and Indonesia from another suspect.

KPK Chairman Agus Rahardjo said at a news briefing its probe was directed against individuals, and would not affect Garuda’s operations. Garuda’s vice president for corporate communication, Benny S. Butarbutar, said the airline would cooperate with the KPK, adding the investigation “has no connection to our corporate activities”.

Garuda shares closed 2.3 percent lower on Thursday, underperforming the broader market which was little changed. They were down 0.6 percent on Friday.

Indonesian authorities detain 17 nationals returning from Syria

JAKARTA - Indonesian authorities have detained 17 nationals returning from Syria, including children, suspected of being involved in radical activity, officials told Reuters on Sunday.

Immigration office spokesman Agung Sampurno said the people, including a two year-old girl and a three year-old boy, were arrested at Soekarno-Hatta airport upon disembarking an Istanbul-Jakarta Turkish Airline flight on Saturday. They have

been handed over to the police’s anti-terrorism unit for questioning, Sampurno said.

“They are currently still under an interrogation process. If we find any relation to crime on terrorism, we will continue the investigation.

If not, they will be handed over to their families,” the chief of Densus 88, police’s anti-terrorism unit, Eddy Hartono told Reuters.

Police have been monitoring dozens of returning citizens over concerns they could be linking up

with networks to equip a new generation of radicals with the skills and equipment required to launch a major attack at home.

Police killed 33 people and arrested 170 in 2016 for foiled attempts to launch attacks, a significant increase compared to 2015, according to their statistics.

With reigning champion Novak Djokovic having been knocked out in the second round, a grand slam will head into the second week without its top two men’s seeds for the first time since the 2004 French Open.

German Zverev, in the fourth round at a grand slam for the first time after a career ravaged by injury, flummoxed his contemporary with his unorthodox servevolley game and broke the Wimbledon and Olympic champion eight times over the contest.

The world number 50 was helped by a below-par performance from Murray but thoroughly deserved his 7-5 5-7 6-2 6-4 victory over three and a half hours on Rod Laver Arena, which earned him a quarter-final meeting with Roger Federer or Kei Nishikori.

“He deserved to win because he played great when he was down and also in the important moments,” said Briton Murray. “(He) kept coming up with great shots, there’s not too much you can do about that.

Sometimes you got to say, ‘well played’. It was obviously disappointing to lose. But he did some good stuff out there.”

Murray prides himself on the variety of weapons at his disposal but some, like his lob, deserted him on Sunday, while others were undermined by the lack of pace Zverev offered him to work with.

Zverev served solidly and came up with 52 winners, charging the net 118 times and breaking the world number one five times in the first two sets alone.

“Honestly, I was in a little coma, just serve and volleying my way through,” said Zverev.

“There were some points I don’t know how I won. But somehow I made it.”

He served up his first ace to take the first set but Murray recovered to bring the match back to parity with a backhand winner down-the-line on his fifth set point in the second.

If the Scot thought he was on his way out of the woods he was wrong, however, and Zverev broke him for a sixth time to take a 3-2 lead in the third, and again for 5-2 before serving out the set when Murray dumped a backhand into the net.

An eighth break early in the fourth set triggered serious alarm bells among the large British contingent on Rod Laver Arena but despite their exhortations, Murray was unable to fight his way out of his funk.

There were some nerves as Zverev served for the match - he netted one straightforward overhead - but he recovered his composure to go through to the quarter-finals when Murray sent a forehand long.

“I got excited,” Zverev added. “It was easy to stay aggressive but it was definitely tough to stay calm ... I was surprised at how I managed to get so many first serves in.

“It means the world to me and it means a lot that my family is here and my box is full.”

Zverev sat in the same box on Saturday watching his 19-year-old brother Alexander, tipped by many to be a future grand slam champion, lose over five sets to Rafa Nadal.

It will now be the 29-year-old older sibling, however, who will take the family name into the final week of a grand slam for the first time.

CLEVELAND - Kawhi Leonard capped his career-high, 41point night with a dunk in the final seconds and the San Antonio Spurs held on for a 118-115 overtime victory Saturday night against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

LeBron James tied up Leonard for a jump ball with 13 seconds left and the Cavs down 3. James won the tip, but the ball was headed out of bounds when Kevin Love saved it and fired it behind his back inbounds.

Leonard caught the pass and sprinted to the other end for the dunk and the clincher with four seconds left.

After LaMarcus Aldridge missed a pair of free throws in the final second of overtime and the Cavs called timeout, Love missed a corner 3-pointer at the buzzer that would’ve forced double overtime.

Love shot just 3 of 11 from the 3-point line Saturday.

The Cavs had plenty of chances late, but went scoreless for about two minutes late in overtime.

James received an inbounds pass with 24 seconds left and a chance to tie with a 3-pointer. He fired a bounce pass to the corner, but no one was standing there on the busted play.

James expected Kyrie Irving to cut to the corner, but he never did and James was charged with his seventh turnover of the night.

Leonard surpassed 30 points for the sixth straight game, while Aldridge scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Spurs.

David Lee scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds starting in place of Pau Gasol, who is out with a fractured bone in his left hand.

Tony Parker also missed the

game with an ankle injury.

James and Irving each scored 29 points and Love had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Cavs. Tristan Thompson had 14 points and 12 rebounds. James’ deep 3-pointer from 30 feet away with 34.8 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 107 after the Cavs missed their previous five 3-point attempts.

The Spurs went scoreless over the final 2:36 of regulation, missing their last four shots and committing a turnover while the Cavs erased a five-point deficit in the final minute.

Leonard missed a short fadeaway jumper over James with 13.4 seconds left and the Cavs grabbed the rebound with a chance to win it.

Record-breaking Rooney takes all the plaudits

LONDON - Wayne Rooney earned a collective salute from the football world on Saturday after becoming Manchester United’s most prolific goalscorer. After netting his recordbreaking 250th goal for the Premier League giants, Rooney’s achievement was lauded by Bobby Charlton, the player whose landmark he had surpassed.

After watching him score a fittingly dazzling stoppage-time free kick to snatch a 1-1 draw at Stoke City, Charlton - whose England scoring record was also broken by Rooney - congratulated the United number 10 in the dressing-room. “It is an incredible achievement for his career to have Manchester United’s record and one that belonged to a legend like Bobby Charlton,” United manager Jose Mourinho said.

“Now he is the man and he is a legend of Manchester United.” Charlton scored the last of his 249 United goals more than 40 years ago. “I must admit that I have become used to the honour of being the club’s all-time top goalscorer,” Charlton told the United website.

“I would be lying to say that I’m not disappointed to have lost the record. However, I can honestly say that I’m delighted for Wayne. He deserves his place in the history books. “He is a true great for club and country, and it is fitting that he is now the highest goalscorer for both United and England.”

Charlton said it had been to great to watch Rooney since his arrival at Old Trafford in 2004 when he

scored a stunning hat-trick on his debut. “I was 35 when I retired,” Charlton said. “Wayne is only 31 and still going strong, so I don’t think he’s done by a long stretch yet. He will raise the bar even further before he calls it a day.

“Now he’s the man to beat, and I can’t see anybody doing that for a long, long time.” Alex Ferguson, Manchester United’s former manager who signed Rooney from Everton, also offered his congratulations.

“Wayne thoroughly deserves his place in the history books of this great club and I am sure that he will go on to score many more,” Ferguson said.

HUMBLE ROONEY

Two of England’s greatest strikers chipped in with praise. “What a player. What a career,” tweeted Alan Shearer while Gary Lineker described his recordbreaking strike as a goal that Charlton himself would have been proud of.

As for Rooney, he treated the landmark with typical humility, barely able to believe he had surpassed England’s old World Cup hero.

“Sir Bobby is such an iconic figure, and has been for so long. When you sign for the club, you realise how important he is. To surpass him in goals is something I never thought I’d do,” Rooney told the BBC. “He came and congratulated me in the dressing room so I know he’s pleased in some way.

MILAN — Inspired by Diego Maradona’s visit to training, Dries Mertens led Napoli to a 2-1 victory at AC Milan in Serie A on Saturday.

Mertens, who has often been compared to Maradona, provided two sublime assists to help Napoli race into a 2-0 lead, with less than 10 minutes gone at San Siro.

The 29-year-old Mertens also had several chances to extend Napoli’s lead. “He sacrificed himself tonight, he was brilliant in the first half-hour, giving chances to his teammates,” Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri said.

“But then he missed the goal three times in fairly easy situations.

“The lad is doing very well for the team. Tonight, it was a disappointment only because of the chances he missed. But we like Dries!” Juraj Kucka reduced the deficit eight minutes from halftime and Mario Pasalic hit the crossbar but Milan, which had fought back from two goals down at Torino on Monday, couldn’t find the equalizer.

Napoli moved level on points with second-placed Roma, which hosts Cagliari on Sunday. Milan remained fifth, seven points further back.

“There’s a bit of bitterness because of how the lads played, we didn’t deserve to lose,” Milan coach Vincenzo Montella said. “But we’re happy that we matched Napoli, which is in the Champions League and have been one of the top teams in Italy for several years now.”

Maradona, who led Napoli to its only two league titles in 1987 and 1990, was in Naples for a theatrical event last week and turned up at Napoli’s training session on Wednesday. Napoli started brightly and had a penalty appeal waved away in the third minute when Mertens went down under Gabriel Paletta’s challenge.

It took the lead three minutes later as Lorenzo Insigne latched onto a crossfield ball from Mertens and

It got worse for Milan in the 9th as Mertens befuddled Gustavo Gomez and threaded the ball through for Jose Callejon to fire in from a tight angle, and through Donnarumma’s legs. The same two players almost combined for another goal in the 14th but Donnarumma rushed off his line in time.

Mertens should have scored himself on the half-hour but he prodded a weak effort into Donnarumma’s arms after being sent clear by Allan. Milan almost got back into the match in the 35th but Gomez headed Giacomo Bonaventura just past the right upright.

The home side did reduce the deficit two minutes later as a defensive mix-up between Jorginho and Lorenzo Tonelli allowed Kucka to race forward and fire into the bottom right corner. Milan almost leveled two minutes into the second half but Mario Pasalic’s header came off the crossbar.

Insigne went close to scoring a stunning goal shortly before the hour mark as he attempted to lob Donnarumma from midfield with his audacious chip sailing narrowly over the bar. Mertens twice went close but he was denied by Donnarumma in the 70th, following a cross from Marek Hamsik, while Bonaventura sprinted back to tackle the Belgium international three minutes later, when he was clear on goal.

Donnarumma almost scored in stoppage time as he went up for a free kick but he headed it at Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina. There was a touching moment from the Milan fans in the first half as they unveiled a banner in support of “the population of central Italy,” which was hit by several earthquakes and an avalanche this week. Resurgent Ramos sinks Malaga as Real increase lead at top

BARCELONA - Sergio Ramos made amends for his untimely own goal last week at Sevilla by scoring twice as Real Madrid bounced back from two successive defeats by beating Malaga 2-1 on Saturday to go four points clear at the top of La Liga.

The Real Madrid captain headed his side in front in the 35th minute by powering Toni Kroos’s outswinging corner beyond Carlos Kameni and struck again in the 43rd by sliding in a free kick from his German team mate from close range to net his third goal in four games.

It was the perfect response from the Spain international six days after putting through his own net

against Sevilla and inadvertently helping his former side win 2-1 to halt Zinedine Zidane’s side’s remarkable 40-game unbeaten run.

Ramos has now scored six league goals this term, bettering his previous record of five in a season with still half the campaign to go.

Malaga had proved difficult opponents and a slip by Raphael Varane allowed Venezuela international Juanpi to pull a goal back in the 63rd minute. It took a good save from Keylor Navas to prevent Chory Castro from levelling moments later.

Real lead the standings on 43 points, four clear of Sevilla and five ahead of champions Barcelona, having played 18 games.

Tears flow as Chapecoense return to action

CHAPECO - Thousands of fans gathered under a blazing sun in southern Brazil on Saturday as Chapecoense played their first match since most of their players were killed in an air crash in Colombia in November.

The friendly against Palmeiras was the first game of the season for both sides but it was much more about symbolism and emotion than sport for a club looking to bounce back from one of football’s great tragedies.

The game was halted in the 71st minute to allow fans to scream their now famous “Vamos Chape!” chant in tribute to the players and staff who perished in a plane crash in Colombia in November.

The Arena Conda stadium was adorned with thousands of hand-made origami in the shape of hearts and tsurus, birds that signify health, good fortune and long life. One banner behind the goals read, “Eternal Champions, kit man to the president”, a reference to the many players and backroom staff who died.

The survivors and their rela-

tives took centre stage before a ball was kicked, with Jackson Follman, the goalkeeper whose leg was amputated as a result of the crash, being presented with the Copa Sudamericana trophy in a tearful ceremony.

Follman was one of only six people to survive the crash, which came as the Chapecoense squad approached Medellin to play Atletico Nacional in November’s Copa Sudamericana final. The plane ran out of fuel and hit a mountainside, killing 71 people on board, many of them players, officials and reporters on their way to the game.

Chapecoense were awarded the Sudamericana title by CONMEBOL in December after the fixture was cancelled.

In an emotional ceremony, the wives of the dead players were given the medals their husbands would have received.

Follman, who was wheeled into the centre circle in his wheelchair, cried as he lifted the trophy, Chapecoense’s first ever continental title.

The game that followed was

hard fought but with a scorching sun overhead and both sides giving their squads their first run out of the season it was never more than a glamorous training match.

Palmeiras scored the opener after nine minutes when Raphael Veiga nipped in between hesitant defenders to score from just inside the box. Douglas Grolli equalised for the home side five minutes later when he headed home a free kick from the left.

Amaral gave Chapecoense the lead just minutes into the second half with a glancing header.

But Vitinho grabbed a late equaliser for Palmeiras with a spectacular left-foot shot from outside the box with 12 minutes left. The ground was well short of its 20,000 capacity but those who did turn out said they hoped it was the start of a new era for the club.

“We couldn’t not be here,” Sizelda Filipi, a fan who lives around 30 kms from the ground, said shortly before kick-off.

MILAN — Inspired by Diego Maradona’s visit to training, Dries Mertens led Napoli to a 2-1 victory at AC Milan in Serie A on Saturday.

Mertens, who has often been compared to Maradona, provided two sublime assists to help Napoli race into a 2-0 lead, with less than 10 minutes gone at San Siro.

The 29-year-old Mertens also had several chances to extend Napoli’s lead. “He sacrificed himself tonight, he was brilliant in the first half-hour, giving chances to his teammates,” Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri said.

“But then he missed the goal three times in fairly easy situations.

“The lad is doing very well for the team. Tonight, it was a disappointment only because of the chances he missed. But we like Dries!” Juraj Kucka reduced the deficit eight minutes from halftime and Mario Pasalic hit the crossbar but Milan, which had fought back from two goals down at Torino on Monday, couldn’t find the equalizer.

Napoli moved level on points with second-placed Roma, which hosts Cagliari on Sunday. Milan remained fifth, seven points further back.

“There’s a bit of bitterness because of how the lads played, we didn’t deserve to lose,” Milan coach Vincenzo Montella said. “But we’re happy that we matched Napoli, which is in the Champions League and have been one of the top teams in Italy for several years now.”

Maradona, who led Napoli to its only two league titles in 1987 and 1990, was in Naples for a theatrical event last week and turned up at Napoli’s training session on Wednesday. Napoli started brightly and had a penalty appeal waved away in the third minute when Mertens went down under Gabriel Paletta’s challenge.

It took the lead three minutes later as Lorenzo Insigne latched onto a crossfield ball from Mertens and

curled into the top right corner. Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who was making his 50th Serie A appearance at the age of just 17, got a hand to the ball but couldn’t prevent it from going in.

It got worse for Milan in the 9th as Mertens befuddled Gustavo Gomez and threaded the ball through for Jose Callejon to fire in from a tight angle, and through Donnarumma’s legs. The same two players almost combined for another goal in the 14th but Donnarumma rushed off his line in time.

Mertens should have scored himself on the half-hour but he prodded a weak effort into Donnarumma’s arms after being sent clear by Allan. Milan almost got back into the match in the 35th but Gomez headed Giacomo Bonaventura just past the right upright.

The home side did reduce the deficit two minutes later as a defensive mix-up between Jorginho and Lorenzo Tonelli allowed Kucka to race forward and fire into the bottom right corner. Milan almost leveled two minutes into the second half but Mario Pasalic’s header came off the crossbar.

Insigne went close to scoring a stunning goal shortly before the hour mark as he attempted to lob Donnarumma from midfield with his audacious chip sailing narrowly over the bar. Mertens twice went close but he was denied by Donnarumma in the 70th, following a cross from Marek Hamsik, while Bonaventura sprinted back to tackle the Belgium international three minutes later, when he was clear on goal.

Donnarumma almost scored in stoppage time as he went up for a free kick but he headed it at Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina. There was a touching moment from the Milan fans in the first half as they unveiled a banner in support of “the population of central Italy,” which was hit by several earthquakes and an avalanche this week. Resurgent Ramos sinks Malaga as Real increase lead at top

BARCELONA - Sergio Ramos made amends for his untimely own goal last week at Sevilla by scoring twice as Real Madrid bounced back from two successive defeats by beating Malaga 2-1 on Saturday to go four points clear at the top of La Liga.

The Real Madrid captain headed his side in front in the 35th minute by powering Toni Kroos’s outswinging corner beyond Carlos Kameni and struck again in the 43rd by sliding in a free kick from his German team mate from close range to net his third goal in four games.

It was the perfect response from the Spain international six days after putting through his own net

against Sevilla and inadvertently helping his former side win 2-1 to halt Zinedine Zidane’s side’s remarkable 40-game unbeaten run.

Ramos has now scored six league goals this term, bettering his previous record of five in a season with still half the campaign to go.

Malaga had proved difficult opponents and a slip by Raphael Varane allowed Venezuela international Juanpi to pull a goal back in the 63rd minute. It took a good save from Keylor Navas to prevent Chory Castro from levelling moments later.

Tears flow as Chapecoense return to action

CHAPECO - Thousands of fans gathered under a blazing sun in southern Brazil on Saturday as Chapecoense played their first match since most of their players were killed in an air crash in Colombia in November.

The friendly against Palmeiras was the first game of the season for both sides but it was much more about symbolism and emotion than sport for a club looking to bounce back from one of football’s great tragedies.

The game was halted in the 71st minute to allow fans to scream their now famous “Vamos Chape!” chant in tribute to the players and staff who perished in a plane crash in Colombia in November.

The Arena Conda stadium was adorned with thousands of hand-made origami in the shape of hearts and tsurus, birds that signify health, good fortune and long life. One banner behind the goals read, “Eternal Champions, kit man to the president”, a reference to the many players and backroom staff who died.

The survivors and their rela-

tives took centre stage before a ball was kicked, with Jackson Follman, the goalkeeper whose leg was amputated as a result of the crash, being presented with the Copa Sudamericana trophy in a tearful ceremony.

Follman was one of only six people to survive the crash, which came as the Chapecoense squad approached Medellin to play Atletico Nacional in November’s Copa Sudamericana final. The plane ran out of fuel and hit a mountainside, killing 71 people on board, many of them players, officials and reporters on their way to the game.

Chapecoense were awarded the Sudamericana title by CONMEBOL in December after the fixture was cancelled.

In an emotional ceremony, the wives of the dead players were given the medals their husbands would have received.

Follman, who was wheeled into the centre circle in his wheelchair, cried as he lifted the trophy, Chapecoense’s first ever continental title.

The game that followed was

hard fought but with a scorching sun overhead and both sides giving their squads their first run out of the season it was never more than a glamorous training match.

Palmeiras scored the opener after nine minutes when Raphael Veiga nipped in between hesitant defenders to score from just inside the box. Douglas Grolli equalised for the home side five minutes later when he headed home a free kick from the left.

Amaral gave Chapecoense the lead just minutes into the second half with a glancing header.

But Vitinho grabbed a late equaliser for Palmeiras with a spectacular left-foot shot from outside the box with 12 minutes left. The ground was well short of its 20,000 capacity but those who did turn out said they hoped it was the start of a new era for the club.

“We couldn’t not be here,” Sizelda Filipi, a fan who lives around 30 kms from the ground, said shortly before kick-off.

With reigning champion Novak Djokovic having been knocked out in the second round, a grand slam will head into the second week without its top two men’s seeds for the first time since the 2004 French Open.

German Zverev, in the fourth round at a grand slam for the first time after a career ravaged by injury, flummoxed his contemporary with his unorthodox servevolley game and broke the Wimbledon and Olympic champion eight times over the contest.

The world number 50 was helped by a below-par performance from Murray but thoroughly deserved his 7-5 5-7 6-2 6-4 victory over three and a half hours on Rod Laver Arena, which earned him a quarter-final meeting with Roger Federer or Kei Nishikori.

“He deserved to win because he played great when he was down and also in the important moments,” said Briton Murray. “(He) kept coming up with great shots, there’s not too much you can do about that.

Sometimes you got to say, ‘well played’. It was obviously disappointing to lose. But he did some good stuff out there.”

Murray prides himself on the variety of weapons at his disposal but some, like his lob, deserted him on Sunday, while others were undermined by the lack of pace Zverev offered him to work with.

Zverev served solidly and came up with 52 winners, charging the net 118 times and breaking the world number one five times in the first two sets alone.

“Honestly, I was in a little coma, just serve and volleying my way through,” said Zverev.

“There were some points I don’t know how I won. But somehow I made it.”

He served up his first ace to take the first set but Murray recovered to bring the match back to parity with a backhand winner down-the-line on his fifth set point in the second.

If the Scot thought he was on his way out of the woods he was wrong, however, and Zverev broke him for a sixth time to take a 3-2 lead in the third, and again for 5-2 before serving out the set when Murray dumped a backhand into the net.

An eighth break early in the fourth set triggered serious alarm bells among the large British contingent on Rod Laver Arena but despite their exhortations, Murray was unable to fight his way out of his funk.

There were some nerves as Zverev served for the match - he netted one straightforward overhead - but he recovered his composure to go through to the quarter-finals when Murray sent a forehand long.

“I got excited,” Zverev added. “It was easy to stay aggressive but it was definitely tough to stay calm ... I was surprised at how I managed to get so many first serves in.

“It means the world to me and it means a lot that my family is here and my box is full.”

Zverev sat in the same box on Saturday watching his 19-year-old brother Alexander, tipped by many to be a future grand slam champion, lose over five sets to Rafa Nadal.

It will now be the 29-year-old older sibling, however, who will take the family name into the final week of a grand slam for the first time.

Murray, who has lost five finals at Melbourne Park, four of them to Djokovic, said he would be back. (rtr)

CLEVELAND - Kawhi Leonard capped his career-high, 41point night with a dunk in the final seconds and the San Antonio Spurs held on for a 118-115 overtime victory Saturday night against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

LeBron James tied up Leonard for a jump ball with 13 seconds left and the Cavs down 3. James won the tip, but the ball was headed out of bounds when Kevin Love saved it and fired it behind his back inbounds.

Leonard caught the pass and sprinted to the other end for the dunk and the clincher with four seconds left.

After LaMarcus Aldridge missed a pair of free throws in the final second of overtime and the Cavs called timeout, Love missed a corner 3-pointer at the buzzer that would’ve forced double overtime.

Love shot just 3 of 11 from the 3-point line Saturday.

The Cavs had plenty of chances late, but went scoreless for about two minutes late in overtime.

James received an inbounds pass with 24 seconds left and a chance to tie with a 3-pointer. He fired a bounce pass to the corner, but no one was standing there on the busted play.

James expected Kyrie Irving to cut to the corner, but he never did and James was charged with his seventh turnover of the night.

Leonard surpassed 30 points for the sixth straight game, while Aldridge scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Spurs.

David Lee scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds starting in place of Pau Gasol, who is out with a fractured bone in his left hand.

Tony Parker also missed the

game with an ankle injury.

James and Irving each scored 29 points and Love had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Cavs. Tristan Thompson had 14 points and 12 rebounds. James’ deep 3-pointer from 30 feet away with 34.8 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 107 after the Cavs missed their previous five 3-point attempts.

The Spurs went scoreless over the final 2:36 of regulation, missing their last four shots and committing a turnover while the Cavs erased a five-point deficit in the final minute.

Leonard missed a short fadeaway jumper over James with 13.4 seconds left and the Cavs grabbed the rebound with a chance to win it.

White House lashes out at media ‘lies’ about inauguration crowds

WASHINGTON - Donald Trump has accused the media of lying about the turnout at his inauguration ceremony - and warned reporters are going to pay a “big price” for their alleged dishonesty.

The President insisted that crowds at the event stretched back all the way to the Washington Monument, even though photographs and footage from the scene showed large, empty spaces around the landmark.

Press Secretary Sean Spicer went one further during a heated White House briefing on Saturday night, describing it as “the largest audience ever to witness an inauguration, period”.He also claimed that white “floor coverings” used to protect the grass during the ceremony had unfairly drawn attention to empty spaces on the National Mall.

With pictures from Mr Trump’s inauguration on TV screens beside him, Mr Spicer added: “Attempts to lessen the enthusiasm of the inauguration are shameful and wrong.”

Although the National Park Service no longer provides estimates of crowds at inaugurations, photographic evidence shows substantially more people turned out for Barack Obama’s ceremony in 2009.

Mr Spicer also criticised a reporter who wrongly stated that President Trump has removed a bust of Martin Luther King Jr from the Oval Office.

Mexico’s president to meet with Trump amid populist pressure at home

MEXICO - Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and U.S. President Donald Trump will meet at the end of this month to discuss trade, immigration and security issues, as the Latin American leader faces increased populist pressure at home.

Trump’s spokesman Sean Spicer told a news conference on Saturday that the two leaders will meet on Jan. 31, the week after senior officials of both administrations hold bilateral talks in Washington.

Trump is committed to renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and would move to withdraw if no “fair deal” is forthcoming, according to the White House website.

Pena Nieto, whose popularity has plummeted due to corruption scandals and rising inflation, has been criticized for lacking a clear strategy to counter Trump’s threats to crimp trade and deport illegal immigrants.

Seeking to capitalize on that discontent, Mexican 2018 presidential forerunner Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Saturday said he would tour major U.S. cities starting in February.

“Enough of being passive,” Lopez Obrador of the leftist Moreno party said in a statement. “We should put a national emergency plan in place to face the damage and reverse the protectionist policies of Donald Trump.”

Indonesia watchdog says former CEO of airline Garuda a bribery suspect

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s anti-corruption agency said on Thursday it was treating the former chief executive of airline PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk as a suspect in a bribery case.

Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said in a statement the CEO of Garuda from 2005 to 2014 was suspected of taking bribes related to the purchase of planes and machines from Airbus and Rolls-Royce.

The KPK did not refer to the former CEO by name but, as is its custom, used initials - in this case “ESA”. The CEO of Garuda from 2005 to 2014 was Emirsyah Satar, who is now chairman of Indonesian conglomerate Lippo Group’s e-commerce platform MatahariMall.com.

In a phone message to Reuters, Satar denied wrongdoing but said that it was the authority of the KPK to name him as a suspect and that he will respect the legal process. “As far as I know, when I was the CEO of PT Garuda Indonesia, I had never done corrupt activities and I did not receive anything that was related to my position,” Satar said.

MatahariMall said it supported the legal process in Indonesia, but declined further comment. Rolls-Royce did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A spokesman for Airbus said the company had no

comment on the issue.

The KPK said it found evidence that “ESA” had received 20 billion rupiah ($1.5 million) of cash and items worth $2 million in Singapore and Indonesia from another suspect.

KPK Chairman Agus Rahardjo said at a news briefing its probe was directed against individuals, and would not affect Garuda’s operations. Garuda’s vice president for corporate communication, Benny S. Butarbutar, said the airline would cooperate with the KPK, adding the investigation “has no connection to our corporate activities”.

Garuda shares closed 2.3 percent lower on Thursday, underperforming the broader market which was little changed. They were down 0.6 percent on Friday.

Rolls-Royce agreed to pay authorities more than $800 million to resolve charges of bribing officials in six countries in schemes that lasted more than a decade, the U.S. Justice Department and Britain’s Serious Fraud Office (SFO) said in statements on Tuesday.

Britain’s SFO last year launched an investigation into suspected fraud, bribery and corruption in some Airbus aeroplane sales, following discrepancies found during an internal company audit of applications for UK government export credits. Indonesian authorities detain 17 nationals returning from Syria

JAKARTA - Indonesian authorities have detained 17 nationals returning from Syria, including children, suspected of being involved in radical activity, officials told Reuters on Sunday.

Immigration office spokesman Agung Sampurno said the people, including a two year-old girl and a three year-old boy, were arrested at Soekarno-Hatta airport upon disembarking an Istanbul-Jakarta Turkish Airline flight on Saturday. They have

been handed over to the police’s anti-terrorism unit for questioning, Sampurno said.

“They are currently still under an interrogation process. If we find any relation to crime on terrorism, we will continue the investigation.

BUSINESS Germany must prepare for ‘rough ride’ under Trump -Vice Chancellor

BERLIN - Germany will need a new economic strategy geared toward Asia should the new U.S. administration start a trade war with China, Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel said on Friday, warning against protectionism hours after President Donald Trump was sworn in.

“I think we have to prepare for a rough ride,” Gabriel said in an interview with the public broadcaster ZDF, in the first official German reaction to Trump’s inauguration. He added that Trump’s election was the result of “a bad radicalisation”.

The leader of the left-leaning Social Democrats (SPD), coalition partners of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s ruling conservatives, dismissed suggestions that Trump may not pursue some controversial promises, such as imposing high tariffs on cars imported from Mexico.

“He means it extremely seriously,” said Gabriel. “What we heard today were high nationalistic tones.”

He added that all that was missing from Trump’s speech was comparing parliament to a “Quasselbude” or “talking shop,” a term used by Hitler before he took power to discredit the parliamentary democracy of the Weimar Republic in the 1920s.

Gabriel said the European Union and Germany must stand together “to defend our interests” and to prevent such nationalistic fervour

from gripping the continent.

Germany will hold a general election in September in which the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is expected to enter the national parliament for the first time.

Dollar falls, stocks pare gains after Trump inauguration NEW YORK - The dollar was down but U.S. stock indexes pared their gains in the last day of a choppy trading week, after Donald Trump’s inaugural speech as U.S. President prompted investor concern about protectionist trade policies.

U.S. Treasury yields fell slightly as Trump spoke but were still up on the day.

The dollar, which has lost some of its momentum in recent weeks, was off 0.2 percent against six major currencies. It hit a session low during the speech before paring losses.

In his speech Trump, the country’s 45th President, promised to put ‘America First’ and that the U.S. would follow two rules: buy American and hire American.

“There’s a concern about what his trade policies will be,” said Jamie Cox, managing partner of Harris Financial Group, after he

attended the inauguration in Washington D.C. “That’s probably the No. 1 area where Trump will have to tone down his rhetoric because we do have to work with other nations.”

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 57 points, or 0.29 percent, to 19,789.4, the S&P 500 had gained 4.68 points, or 0.206742 percent, to 2,268.37 and the Nasdaq Composite had added 9.86 points, or 0.18 percent, to 5,549.94.

The benchmark S&P 500 was on track to end the week down slightly, and both the Dow and Nasdaq were each set for weekly declines.

The S&P 500 has fallen a median 2.7 percent in the month after each new president has taken the keys to the White House since Herbert Hoover did so in January 1929, according to Reuters analysis.(rtr)

At least 36 killed as Indian train derails

BHUBANESWAR - At least 36 people were killed and 50 injured on Saturday night when nine coaches of a passenger train derailed in eastern India, in the latest disaster to hit the vast and accident-prone state railways, police said.

The Hirakhand express train from Jagdalpur to Bhubaneswar derailed at around 11:20 pm near Kuneri station, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, around 30 km (18 miles) outside the town of Rayagada.

“The rescue operation is almost over,” said J.P. Mishra, the chief public relations officer at East Coast Railway, which has jurisdiction over the area where the derailment occurred.

“Our first priority is to take care of the injured passengers and provide them proper treatment by shifting them to hospitals. We are also searching all the coaches to ensure that nobody remains stranded in them,” he said.

The reason for the derailment has not been ascertained, said Mishra, adding

that they were not ruling out any possibility of foul play and investigations will be conducted. The incident area is one where Maoist rebels typically operate.

Video footage from the scene showed members of the disaster management team and locals trying to rescue trapped passengers from windows and debris using phones to provide light with the train’s bogie wheels tilted off the railway track and mangled wreckage all over the spot.

“Nine bogies were derailed of which three have turned and fallen off the track,” said local Superintendent of Police L.K.V. Ranga Rao. “Most of the casualties and deaths are from the three sleeper-class compartments.”

India’s state railways, built during British colonial rule, have an appalling

In the last serious accident, 150 people died when a train derailed late last year in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. India recorded 27,581 railway deaths in 2014, the most recent year for which figures are available, with most victims falling from, or being struck by, moving trains.

“Anguished to learn about the train accident near Vizianagaram,” Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said on Twitter, offering his condolences to the families of the victims.

BEIRUT - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s opponents appear more divided than ever as they prepare for peace talks next week, demoralised by their defeat in Aleppo and unable to unite into a single force to defend their remaining territory.

The new diplomacy led by Assad’s Russian allies has exposed yet more splits in a rebellion that has never had a clear chief, with rebel factions long fractured by regional rivalries, their ties to foreign states, and an ideological battle over whether to pursue Syrian national or Sunni jihadist goals.

Several leaders have became prominent only to be killed in the nearly six-year-old conflict and numerous military and political coalitions have come and gone.

After the rebels’ defeat in Aleppo last month, the latest effort to unify the jihadist and moderate wings of the insurgency collapsed.

By contrast Assad is as strong as at any time since the fighting began, his Russian and Iranian backers committed to his survival while the differing agendas of foreign states backing the rebels have added to their divisions.

The delegation of rebels that will attend the talks with the Syrian government starting on Monday in the Kazakh capital Astana represents only part of the moderate opposition that has fought Assad in a loose alliance known as the Free Syrian Army.

Most are from groups fighting in northern Syria with the backing of Turkey. Other rebel groups seen closer to the United States and Saudi Arabia have been left out.

The delegation will be led by Mohammad Alloush, the politburo chief of the Jaish al-Islam rebel group, which is at the more moderate end of the Sunni Islamist spectrum and has its main stronghold near Damascus.

Alloush, who lives outside Syria, has not been appointed to the role because he wields influence over the rebellion as a whole -- he does not. He was chosen because he is a member of the High Negotiations Committee (HNC), an alliance set up with Saudi and Western support in 2015.

The HNC itself, the broadest opposition body formed since the war began, has not been invited to Astana.Its chairman, former prime minister Riad Hijab, is the nearest thing the moderate opposition has to “a face”. But his role is closer to that of a spokesman for the myriad groups on the ground and he will not be in Astana either.

The HNC has said it hopes the Astana talks will be a step towards new peace talks in Geneva. But while Russia says Astana aims to supplement Geneva, some in the opposition fear Moscow is trying to supplant the U.N.-backed process with its own and wants to increase divisions in the rebel camp. SYDNEY - A 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck off Papua New Guinea (PNG) on Sunday, but there were no reports of casualties or damage after a potential tsunami did not occur.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) downgraded the quake from an initial measurement of magnitude 8. It struck some 47

kms (29 miles) west of Arawa on the north coast of Bougainville Island at a depth of 154 km (96 miles), the USGS reported.

An initial tsunami alert for several Pacific islands was wound back to cover just PNG and the neighbouring Solomon Islands and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center later said the tsunami

threat had passed safely for those countries.

Quakes are common in Papua New Guinea, which sits on the Pacific’s “Ring of Fire”, a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates.

Loti Yates, the director of the Solomon Islands National Disaster Management Office, said people

had been told to move to higher ground in Choiseul and Western Province.

Chris McKee, assistant director at PNG’s Geophysical Observatory Office in Port Moresby, said there were no initial reports of damage or casualties from near the epicentre of the quake, which is sparsely populated.

Australia and New Zealand both said they had assessed the threat and there was no danger to their coastlines.

Bougainville Island is one of the islands that make up the Autonomous Region of Bougainville within Papua New Guinea (PNG) which is home to around 300,000 people. (rtr)

DENPASAR — A former Reuters war correspondent on trial in Indonesia on charges of possessing hashish faces up to four years in prison, a prosecutor said Thursday.

David Fox, a British national, was arrested Oct. 8 along with Australian Giuseppe Serafino on the tourist island of Bali. Police said they confiscated a total of 10.09 grams (0.36 ounces) of hashish from Fox’s clothing and house.

He is being tried at the Denpasar District Court, where prosecutor Erawati Susina said he could face a maximum four years in prison. Serafino is being tried separately and faces the same possible sentence.

Killed, body of woman put into sack Head injured, neck ensnared with trap DENPASAR - When the residents of Sidakarya, South Denpasar, precisely on Jalan Kerta Dalem, were busy celebrating Saraswati feast day on Saturday (Jan. 21), they were surprised with the finding of a sack floating in Punggawa River. Having been opened, it turned out to contain a dead woman suspected of being a murder victim.

“It was found around 08:00, exactly in front of a house number 100X. Our personnel are still doing crime scene investigation. Its identity has not been known or Mrs. X,” said a source in the Denpasar police.

The source added that based on explanation of Made Kara, 57, living at Jalan Sidakarya 44 at 07:30 as usual after opening his stall in front of the scene he looked to Punggawa River. At that time, he saw a suspicious large sack.

Furthermore, Kara told the river janitor, Wayan Kadra, 48, who happened to be cleaning up at that time.

They both then checked the content of the sack. Kadra who lives on Jalan Bedugul Gang Gagak, Sidakarya, came down to the river. After it was pulled by using cleaning tool, he saw people’s hair coming out. Kadra straightly went up and reported the finding to pecalang (customary security guard) to be forwarded to the South Denpasar Police. At 09:30, the identification team of Denpasar police arrived at

the scene. The victim’s body was then evacuated and carried up to the road.

“Crime scene investigation was led in person by Chief of Denpasar Police,” said a source who asked for anonymity.

From the results of initial examination, the victim is known to be female without identity, estimated to be 40 years of age, and has fatty posture with the height of about 150 centimeters, put on black T-shirt but wearing no pants. There are three open wounds on the back of the head alleged to have been caused by strike of sharp weapon and her neck was alleged to have been ensnared by strap and the body was put into a sewn white sack

but at leg’s part of the plastic sack was torn.

“At the crime scene was also found a hand phone of NX brand.

At 10:00, the victim’s body was taken to Sanglah Hospital by using ambulance of the regional disaster mitigation agency or BPBD Bali,” he added.

Chief of Denpasar Police, Hadi Purnomo, accompanied by Chief of Criminal Investigation Unit, Reinhard, said that his institution was still exploring to examine witnesses. Main focus of the investigation is to uncover the victim’s identity. “Our personnel are still at the crime scene and witnesses are still being questioned. We are now waiting for the results of the autopsy,” he stated. (kmb36)

Importance of entrepreneurship for young generation

AS the country with the fourth largest population in the world, Indonesia has the potential to develop its economy. The population is not only the player in the economic development but also serves as a market for business sector.

Unfortunately, the increase in population does not necessarily contribute to improving the ability of local people’s economy.

It can be seen from the annual growth rate of population of Indonesia reaching 1.49 percent or about 4.5 million people. However, according to Central Statistic Agency (BPS) of Indonesia, the economic growth rate in 2015 has decreased, namely 4.8 percent only. It happened because some problems arising as a result of inflation, unemployment and other economic problems. To realize a developed country, at least 2 percent of the population should be entrepreneurs.

With large number of population, Indonesia only has 1.65 percent of it becoming entrepreneurs, so that it still left behind compared to other ASEAN countries such as Singapore having the entrepreneurs as much as 7 percent (of the population), Malaysia (5 percent) and Thailand (3 percent),” said Minister of Cooperatives and the SMEs, AAG Ngurah Puspayoga, in the Jury of the National Independent Entrepreneurial Program 2014 at Wisma Mandiri Club on Jalan Mataram, South Jakarta.

To that end, the entrepreneurial habit should be instilled from childhood, or put into school curriculum. Why is young entrepreneur so important? It happens because currently many graduates are unemployed due to incomparable growth of job opportunity to the number graduates that ultimately increases the number of unemployment. If younger generations are already accustomed to entrepreneurship from school age, certainly after graduating they will not become job seekers. Instead they will become job creators, and they are likely to live in prosperity.

Entrepreneurship is basically one’s ability to see and assess business opportunities and gather resources needed to take appro-

priate action and take advantage of it in order to achieve success.

Public awareness, especially the young generation, of becoming entrepreneurs in Indonesia is still low. They still have orientation in looking for job mainly applying to be a civil servant or employees of companies whose vacancies are limited.

In Indonesia, the number of bachelor graduates each year is not comparable to the existing job opportunities. Each year, state and private colleges hold at least twice graduations with an average of 250,000 bachelors and only about 10,000 people can be absorbed in the job market nationally and globally (Soefijanto 2012).

Pursuant to the BPS report, the open unemployment rate in February 2016 amounted to 5.5 percent. It means that of the 100 existing workforce there are about five to six unemployed people. When compared to previous period or February 2015, the open unemployment decreased by 0.31 percent. Nevertheless, the open unemployment rate for university graduate (undergraduate) has increased significantly.

The unemployment of educated graduates is recorded to increase from 5.34 percent in February

2015 to 6.22 percent in February 2016.

Entrepreneur is the forerunner of SME business. To develop and increase the number of SMEs in Indonesia, it depends on how to improve the mentality of the youth in entrepreneurship.

Younger generation should have mentality that is not afraid of failing as well as dares to try.

Daring to take risk is one of the ways to build a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Many people are afraid of competition against foreign companies having great capital, so that it discourages the mentality of Indonesian young entrepreneurs.

Actually, the competition occurs does not to bring down each other among the employers, but it is going to further motivate the entrepreneurs to innovate in the production, distribution, and marketing. Without competition, there will be no challenges to innovate continuously.

If young people are aware of the importance of entrepreneurship, they will surely reduce job seekers and the number of unemployment in Indonesia. Therefore, as citizen and young people they should never be lulled in a comfort zone under the funding of parents, so that they will forget the position as successor that will increase challenges in the future.

So, let’s build entrepreneurship for our future and of our nation. (kmb)

Buleleng lacks dozens of doctors and nurses

SINGARAJA - Insistence of Commission IV of the Buleleng House of Representatives to appoint contract doctors and nurses was responded by the Buleleng Health Agency. Health Agency will overcome the crisis of doctors and nurses by appointing doctors and nurses through contract system. From existing data, the entire community health center and primary hospital at Tangguwisia village, Seririt, lack 81 personnel of general practitioners, dentists and nurses.

Head of the Buleleng Health Agency, IGN Mahapramana, recently said in the parliamentary building that the region lacks general practitioners, dentists and nurses at 20 health centers either those having provided hospitalization or outpatient services only. In addition, the same condition is experienced by the primary (non-class) hospital at Tangguwisia village, Seririt. This condition has long happened and peaked when central government imposes civil servant recruitment moratorium.

In addition to the health centers and primary hospital, Buleleng Hospital is still experiencing some shortages of medical specialist. Similarly, it happened due to the policy of central government that has closed civil servant recruitment since the past few years. Besides, the hospital has difficulty in obtaining additional medical specialists because the graduates from renowned universities in Bali, including from outside the region, are not interested to serve in Buleleng Hospital.

Moreover, the effort to increase medical specialist through contract system has not been optimal, so that this issue remains to be a stumbling block to hospitals in improving public health services.

“Since there has been no appointment for long time, the shortage continues to grow. As a result, there are health centers having provided hospitalized services, but only having one doctor with civil servant status. We’ve been adding to contract officers but have not been maximized. The most difficult issue faced by hospitals is in getting a medical specialist,” he said.

According to Mahapramana, based on the existing data the agency lacks 20 general practitioners for health centers and 31 people for non-class hospitals. Ideally, the government employs 83 general practitioners. However, until this year all the health centers and non-class hospitals are only filled in by 57 general practitioners.

Dentists also experienced similar condition, where the ideal number is 42 people, but currently the government can only have met 30 people, so that it still lacks 12 people. In the meantime, the government should ideally assign as many as 228 nurses, but so far the position can only be filled in by 198 personnel. Thus, Buleleng still lack 38 nurses.

“It is in accordance with our data and in the whole we still lack many personnel. In essence we agree to the desire of the parliament to ask for the formation of civil servant to central government,” he explained.

With regard to the appointment plan of contract doctors and nurses, Mahapramana said that the effort is still examined by considering financial condition of the district government.

Admittedly, the appointment of contract doctor and nurse is indeed effective to overcome the crisis of doctors and nurses, but their qualification is specific and must be supported by the ability of regional budget to pay their salaries. Clearly, appointment of the doctors or nurses will be carried out in accordance with the mechanism and regulation, including promoting transparency without neglecting their quality and qualifications.

“The solution is by appointing doctors or nurses through contract system. Nevertheless, this must be learned and examined in details particularly in the matter of budget preparedness,” added Mahapramana. (kmb38)

Ferguson film ‘Whose Streets?’ aims to show humanity of community

PARK CITY - The filmmakers of “Whose Streets?,” chronicling the uprising in Ferguson, Missouri after the 2014 police killing of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown, said the documentary attempts to show the humanity behind a community in crisis.

“Whose Streets?” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this week and follows the Ferguson community as they protested Brown’s death, which led to weeks of tense unrest that drew worldwide interest.

The film, co-directed by Sabaah Folayan and Missouri resident Damon Davis, combines social media and amateur footage with original footage depicting the actions of key people in the community.

“When mainstream media isn’t

committed to solving these problems but is more committed to ratings, when politicians are so partisan that they’re confusing us, it becomes up to artists to show people the way,” Folayan said.

At this year’s festival, four films in the documentary competition delve into the impact of the Black Lives Matter movement that rose out of killings of Brown and other black men by police in various U.S. cities in the past years. (rtr)

Women lead unprecedented worldwide mass protests against Trump

WASHINGTON - Hundreds of thousands of women filled the streets of major American cities to lead an unprecedented wave of international protests against President Donald Trump, mocking and denouncing the new U.S. leader the day after his inauguration.

Women activists, outraged by Trump’s campaign rhetoric and behavior they found to be especially misogynistic, spearheaded scores of of marches in the United States and sympathy rallies around the world on Saturday. Organizers said they drew nearly 5 million protesters in all, far surpassing crowd expectations.

The demonstrations also highlighted strong discontent over Trump’s comments and policy positions toward a wide range of groups, including Mexican immigrants, Muslims, the disabled and environmentalists.

In contrast to the heated, often shrill tone of the presidential campaign, and

the grim imagery of “American carnage” Trump evoked in his inaugural address, the mood during Saturday’s protests was largely upbeat, even festive.

Chanting such slogans as, “We need a real leader, not a creepy tweeter,” and “Hey-hey, ho-ho, Donald Trump has got to go,” many marchers wore knitted pink cat-eared “pussy hats” in a reference to Trump’s boast, in a 2005 video made public weeks before the election, about grabbing women by the genitals.

While women constituted the bulk of the demonstrators, many were accompanied by husbands, boyfriends and children.

The planned centerpiece of the protests, a Women’s March on Washington, appeared to draw larger crowds than turned out a day earlier to witness Trump’s swearing-in on the steps of the U.S. Capitol.

No official estimates of the turnout were available, but it clearly exceeded the 200,000 marchers projected in advance by organizers, filling long stretches of downtown Washington around the White House and the National Mall.
