Benoa-Nusa Dua freeway started to be built Antara

Denpasar – Indonesian State Enterprises Minister, Dahlan Iskan, hoped that by the development of the freeway on Benoa, Denpasar through Nusa Dua, Badung, could solve the traffic problem in the area.

“The development of the 12 kilometers freeway is the first one in Bali and according to plan it will be finished very quickly, 14 months,” he said.

In the presentation of the development of the freeway and the underpass in Dewa Ruci Statue, the minister said that the project can be done rapidly due to the cooperation of the Minister of Public Works, Djoko Kirmanto, Bali Governor, Made Mangku Pastika, the Regent of Badung Regency, Anak Agung Gde Agung, and all components of society.

“This shows that a good cooperation can make the project run smoothly and quickly. This must become an example for other region who want to develop like Bali such as Sumatra, ”Dahlan said.

He also explained that the ministry is

urging the cooperation between all departments.

The freeway is the priority of the Indonesian Government which includes in 6 economics programs. The freeway will be above the sea in Benoa Bay which is on Denpasar and Badung area. It will give easier access to Nusa Dua and Ngurah Rai International Airport.

Meanwhile, the Director of Bali Jasa Marga, Tito Karim, said that the project can be done based on the initiative from four states enterprises which are PT Jasa Marga (Persero) Tbk, PT Pelindo III, PT Angkasa Pura I, and Nusa Dua Development Company (BTDC)

Ship sinks off Indonesia, 60 missing Associated Press

AMBON - Officials say a passenger ferry with more than 150 people on board sank off the Maluku Islands in eastern Indonesia. At least eight people are dead and 60 are missing, though dozens of others were rescued.

Nus Sileti, a transportation official, said the ship packed with people who were heading home for the Christmas holidays capsized after run-

ning into stormy weather Wednesday.

It was pounded by waves 10 feet (3 meters) high.

Sileti said seven bodies have been pulled from the water and about 80 people were rescued.

It was Indonesia’s second shipping disaster in less than a week.

On Saturday, a ship packed with asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey and Iran sank off Java island.

Bali News Worried about ‘tsunami’ of HIV/AIDS and drugs

Deputy Regent of Karangasem, I Made Sukerana, worried about the victims of HIV/AIDS and drugs in Karangasem resembling the tsunami. To stem the rampant transmission of HIV/ AIDS and drugs, Sukerana held a contest.

On the socialization of HIV/ AIDS and drugs in the Cultural Center of Amlapura, Tuesday (Dec 20), Sukerana who is also Chairman of the AIDS Prevention Commission (KPA) of Karangasem stated whoever could provide accurate information about drug dealers he would give a gift worth IDR 2 million. Meanwhile, the informant conveying accurate information to the drug user would be rewarded IDR 1 million in cash.

This measure was undertaken to stem the distribution and drug users in Karangasem as well as to minimize the transmission of HIV/AIDS. According to Chairman of the Karangasem Narcotics Agency, the V/AIDS were close to each other or befriending. So far, the highest transmission of HIV/AIDS was known through free sex, while the second highest was through hypodermic needle of drug used interchangeably.

Based on the existing data, it was known the real HIV/ AIDS in Karangasem reached 138 people and it meant that pursuant to estimation of WHO in Karangasem figured 1,380 infected people. In fact, it did not only infect the adults, but children had also been infected by their parents. Additionally, two elementary school students in Rendang Subdistrict were stated to be HIV positive, while the two brothers of former beggars and domestic worker from Kubu had died

of AIDS. Sukerana also said that drug distribution in Karangasem region was the three highest in Bali. People might not believe it, he said, because many Karangasem residents were poor and it belonged to underdeveloped regency.

But, it’s the reality happening. “However, it is hard to find the evidence or catch the dealers and users red-handedly because their whiff is more sensitive than a bloodhound.

Though having been followed for months, the perpetrators can still get away,� he said.

He added that his party promised a reward for informants who could provide accurate information about the dealers and users. So far, people who might know about it were reluctant to report. The reason, people might be reluctant to be dealing with legal affairs, becoming a witness and worrying about the terror made by the perpetrators, while they got nothing though having provided information. “We need to combat against the distribution of drugs and HIV/AIDS as the struggle against terrorists. We have to carry it out hand in hand with the community,� he said.

In the socialization, Made Molin Yudiasa conveyed the highest transmission of HIV/AIDS was caused by free sex behavior. On that account, he appealed the government not to grant permit to the existence of cafĂŠs or location made into a free sex transaction and prostitution in Karangasem. (013)

Philippines buries dead, rebuilds after deadly storm Reuters

ILIGAN, Philippines - Residents of two southern Philippine cities battered by a storm that left over 1,000 people dead and displaced hundreds of thousands started the hard work of reclaiming their lives as authorities buried dozens of bodies in concrete vaults on Wednesday.

The head of the national disaster agency, Benito Ramos, said 1,002 people were killed and dozens more remained unaccounted for on Mindanao island after landslides, flash floods, and falling logs triggered by typhoon Washi swept aside homes and roads as people slept in the early hours of Saturday.

“We have no other place to go but to our old homes,” a woman who only gave her name as Marina told local ANC television, saying the evacuation centers were too crowded for her family.

“We have to get on with our lives,

rebuild our house and forget this tragedy. We appeal to the kindhearted to give us lumber and galvanized iron so we can build a new home.”

Washi was one of the deadlist typhoons to hit the country since 2008 when Fengshen killed 938 in the central Philippines, according to the national disaster agency.

The worst typhoon was Thelma which struck Ormoc City on central island of Leyte in 1991, causing flash floods that killed more than 5,000 people.

Most of Washi’s casualties were in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, with more than 275,000 people homeless, many now sheltering in dozens of evacuation areas. Some of the displaced headed back to their villages to reclaim their lives and rebuild destroyed houses on Wednesday. Television footage showed residents shoveling mud, washing furniture and hanging clothes to dry under the sun.

Hong Kong culls chickens at market, bans trade, as H5N1 found Reuters

HONG KONG - Workers began culling 17,000 chickens at a wholesale poultry market in Hong Kong on Wednesday after a dead chicken there tested positive for the deadly H5N1 avian virus, a government spokesman said. The Hong Kong government also suspended imports of live chickens from mainland China and the trading of live chickens for 21 days in a bid to prevent any spread of the disease, which is normally found in birds but can jump to humans.

“We do not know if the dead chicken was imported from China or if it’s a local chicken,” the government spokesman said, adding that the market would be emptied of birds and thoroughly disinfected.

People do not have immunity to the H5N1 virus and researchers worry it could mutate in humans into a form that would spread around the

world and kill millions of people.

The virus passes easily among birds and has becomes active in various parts of the world, but especially in east Asia, over recent years, especially in the cooler months of the year. The current strain of H5N1 is highly pathogenic, kills most species of birds and up to 60 percent of the people it infects.

The last two large poultry culling exercises in Hong Kong took place in June 2008, after checks uncovered H5N1 in chicken fecal samples, and in December 2008 when the virus killed scores of chickens at a chicken farm. In 1997, six people died from the H5N1 virus in the territory and 1.3 million chickens were culled.

Hong Kong’s last recorded human case of H5N1 was in November 2010 -- the 59-year-old woman, who came down with the illness after returning from a trip to mainland China, survived. Since making its first laboratory-confirmed appearance in Hong Kong in 1997, it is now endemic in many places in Asia and also Egypt.

Since 2003, it has infected 573 people around the world, killing 336.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Japan releases 40-year nuke plant cleanup plan Associated Press Writer

TOKYO â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Japanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s government said Wednesday that it will take as many as 40 years to clean up and fully decommission a nuclear plant that went into meltdown after it was struck by a huge tsunami. Nuclear crisis minister Goshi Hosono acknowledged that decommissioning three wrecked reactors plus spent fuel rods at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant was an â&#x20AC;&#x153;unprecedented project,â&#x20AC;? and that the process was not â&#x20AC;&#x153;totally foreseeable.â&#x20AC;?

After that is completed, TEPCO will start removing the melted fuel, most of which is believed to have fallen to the bottom of the core or even down to the bottom of the larger, beaker-shaped containment vessel, a process that is expected to be completed 25 years from now. The location and conditions of the melted fuel is not exactly known.

Completely decommissioning the plant would require five to 10 more years after the fuel debris removal, making the entire process up to 40 years, according to the roadmap.

The process still requires development of robots and technology that can do much of the work remotely because of extremely high radiation levels inside the reactor buildings. Officials say they are aiming to have such robots by 2013 and start decontaminating the reactor buildings in 2014.

They also have to figure out ways to access each containment vessel and assess the extent of damage, as well as locate holes and cracks through which cooling water is leaking and flooding the area. The decades-long process also would place an enormous financial burden on TEPCO.

JAKARTA - The Indonesian and Chinese governments agreed to promote and enrich strategic partnership in the Sixth Meeting of Indonesia-China Technical Committee on Maritime Cooperation which was held recently in in Bali.

They also agreed to further develop the institutional building of maritime cooperation between the two countries and improve plans for cooperation, the Indonesian foreign ministry said in a press statement here, Wednesday.

Both sides gave positive assessment on the achievement on the maritime cooperation as one of the significant component in enriching the Strategic Partnership, which receive high attention from both leaders.

The Technical Committee reviewed the progress made since the 5th Meeting and expressed satisfaction about the achievements of cooperation in safety of navigation, maritime security, naval exchanges, as well as marine scientific research and environmental protection.

Financial service authority should be free from intervention Antara

JAKARTA - The Financial Service Authority (OJK) should be free from intervention of any institution including the central bank, Vice President Boediono said here on Wednesday.

But he added that the OJK had to step up communication and remained unified especially when facing any crisis.

“The Financial Service Authority should certainly be free from intervention from Bank Indonesia, the government, and the House of Representatives so that it can issue reliable and measurable policies,” the vice president said at a function to open an OJK national seminar.

On the occasion the vice president asserted that although OJK should be independent and free from intervention, it had coordinate and communicate with other related institutions in its task to control a wider monetary system.

Boediono said that in performing its duties, OKJ should build coordination and communication with the central bank and the government in making more macro financial policies to face the threat of the current global crisis.

In addition, the vice president also expressed hope that the flow of information between OJK and the central bank should not be hampered because a misinformation could create a wrong decision.

Survivors recall horror of Indonesia boat disaster From their hospital beds, shocked migrants on Tuesday recounted the horror of clinging to wreckage for three days in violent seas after their overloaded boat sank off Indonesia en route to Australia.

Meanwhile, Indonesian coastal police said they had found the capsized boat and were hauling it to shore in hopes of retrieving bodies believed to be trapped inside.

Seventeen-year-old Afghan student Samin Gul Afghani broke down in tears as he described seeing his uncle and two younger brothers sink exhausted under the waves after Saturday’s disaster.

Afghani, one of 13 survivors found on Monday 100 kilometres (60 miles) from the capsize, recalled seeing dozens of fellow migrants drowning as they waited in vain to be rescued.

“Many people did not know how to swim and were sitting on a large plank of wood from the wreckage.

When the waves hit one side, we shifted to the other,” recounted Afghani.

“One by one, they were swept away by the waves and drowned.

Many were old people and young children.”

His uncle and two brothers were non-swimmers, Afghani said.

“They died in front of my eyes. I could do nothing to save them,” he said, sobbing.

Afghani was one of a handful of survivors receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Lumajang city in Indonesia’s East Java province.

They said that most of the roughly 250 migrants on the doomed boat were Afghans or Iranians.

“People-smugglers first brought me to Indonesia. From here, I got on the boat at around 3:00 am on Saturday,” said 25-year-old Syed Ghasem, another Afghan.

“Six hours into the (sea) journey we were in a very, very violent storm, and the next thing I knew the boat had capsized.”

Ghasem said that about 50 survivors managed to climb onto the section of wood, but many were lost when it broke apart.

“Thirteen of us managed to hang on, and we were adrift for three days and two nights before being picked up by a ferry,” Ghasem said.

So far, 47 survivors have been rescued after the vessel, which had a capacity of only 100, sank 40 nautical miles off eastern Java.

Thirty-four people were plucked from shark-infested waters by fishermen on Saturday, six hours after the sinking. Officials said they were trying to establish whether two Indonesians found Monday near eastern Java’s Malang city were crew members. One of the Indonesians told AFP he was a fisherman.

Search operations resumed Tuesday despite only slim chances of finding anyone else alive, East Java provincial Disaster Management Agency chief Siswanto told AFP. Jember city coastal police chief Nur Mahfud said that the wrecked boat was found by fishermen at around 9:00 am on Tuesday near Nusa Barong, where the 13 survivors were rescued, and was being hauled to shore.

“When they reach the beach, we will be able to check if any bodies are inside,” he said, adding the ship could not be searched at sea due to rough weather.

Survivors said they were heading to Australia’s Christmas Island, a

favoured destination for peoplesmugglers lying closer to Indonesia than Australia, where nearly 50 would-be migrants are believed to have died in wild seas during a shipwreck in December 2010.

The latest capsize is considered the “largest loss of life” yet from a sinking of one of the many boats packed with Asian and Middle Eastern migrants who undertake the perilous sea voyage from Indonesia to Australia. Crew members and migrants had fought over 25 life vests on the doomed boat, officials and survivors said.

“There was nothing for us. We

didn’t eat, we didn’t drink. We were so thirsty. We thought we were going to die,” Afghani said. “One Iranian tried to swim to shore and get help. He never came back.”

Afghani said he saw rescuers on two boats on Sunday but was disappointed when they turned back, probably due to bad weather.

Australia’s Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare on Monday said Indonesia had requested help from Australian police to investigate people-smugglers, who he said had showed a “callous disregard for human life”.

sisting in investigations, Indonesian police chief of general crimes Ari Dono Sukmanto said.

“We are chasing people-smuggling suspects. Migrants have told us that several people are involved in this case. PREPARATION: Ensure inside of suckling pig is completely cleaned out. Season inside and outside with salt. Combine all other ingredients, except turmeric water, and mix thoroughly. Fill inside of suckling with mixture, close belly with string or thin satay skewer. Rub the outside of the pig with turmeric water until the skin is shiny yellow.

Place suckling pig on roasting rack and roast in hot oven (220°C / 425°F) for approximately 1 hour. Rest for 10 minutes in warm place before serving. When serving, ďŹ rst remove the crisp skin with a strong carving knife, then loosen meat from the bones and cut into even dice or slices. Place a heaped tablespoon of stufďŹ ng on each serving plate, and then top with meat and skin. Traditionally this dish is eaten with Jukut Nangka Mekuah and steamed rice.

Helpful hint: If you have a large barbeque with rotisserie or constantly turning spit, you can cook the pig over charcoal for an authentic Balinese ďŹ&#x201A;avor.

The rules, once finalized, will apply to all banks with more than $50 billion in assets, including Goldman Sachs Group Inc, JPMorgan Chase & Co and Bank of America.

Most large U.S. banks already meet the Basel III requirements scheduled to fully go into effect in 2019.

For its liquidity requirements, the Fed is waiting on the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision to flesh out its own liquidity recommendations before setting out U.S. requirements.

The central bank said it initially would hold U.S. banks to a qualitative liquidity standard.

Under the Fed plan, banks would have to assess, at least once a month, what their liquidity needs would be for 30 days, for 90 days, and for a year, during a time when markets are stressed.

They would be required to have enough liquid assets to cover 30 days of operations under these circumstances.

A Fed official on Tuesday said the agency does not have an estimate on how much the capital and liquidity standards will impact U.S. economic growth.

But he said the net benefit to the financial system outweighs

the cost to Wall Street and any short-term decrease in credit availability.

The rules proposed will not only apply to the largest U.S. banks. They will also cover any financial firm the government identifies as being important to the functioning of financial markets and the economy.

The government has yet to decide which non-banks, such as insurance companies and hedge funds, meet this standard.

When such companies are designated, the Fed said it may â&#x20AC;&#x153;tailorâ&#x20AC;? the rules, which were drafted mo stly with banks in mind, to better fit that particular company or industry.

The law also requires the Fed to write tougher standards for foreign banks with operations in the United States. Fed officials said on Tuesday they would release those proposals soon, and that they would apply to about 100 firms.

The Fed rules also try to limit the dangers of big financial firms being heavily intertwined. It would limit the credit exposure of big banks to a single counterparty as a percentage of the firmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s regulatory capital.

The credit exposure between the largest of the big banks would be subject to an even tighter limit.

A bank with more than $500 billion in consolidated assets could not have a credit exposure of more than 10 percent to another bank of that size.

LOS ANGELES - Reactions among Batman fans to a new theatrical trailer for Christopher Nolan’s hotly anticipated “The Dark Knight Rises” ranged from euphoric to philosophical after the sneak peek went viral Monday. Already stratospheric, expectations for the superhero sequel are now orbiting the earth.

As “The A-Team” director Joe Carnahan tweeted after the preview hit the web, “’Dark Knight Rises’ isn’t going to be big, it’s going to create a scale of b.o. success I don’t think H’wood has mapped yet.

The latest look at the superhero sequel arrives on the heels of an extended opening prologue that screened along with select IMAX showings of “Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol” last weekend, giving moviegoers a few tantalizing clues about what fresh evil will strike Gotham City this time around.

As a number of commentators pointed out, this latest installment in the Caped Crusader franchise seems to borrow a page from the Occupy Wall Street movement. Those political undertones came across via a few lines of dialogue spoken during the sneak peek.

In particular, Catwoman’s (Anne Hathaway) warning to Bruce Wayne/ Batman (Christian Bale) -- “You and your friends better batten down

the hatches because when it hits, you’re all going to wonder how you ever thought how you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us” -- struck some as evidence of distinct Occupy undertones.

“Even if Nolan decided against filming at Zuccotti Park, it seems he may in fact depict Batman as the 1 percent,” Slate’s David Haglund wrote.

Asked Entertainment Weekly’s Jeff Jensen: “Team Nolan has made it clear that ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ won’t be going gently into the good night of franchise retirementrebootment. Politics aside, based on the reactions across Twitter and on movie and comic book blogs, the vast majority of viewers came away stoked for the final film in the mega-grossing series, with many

RED BANK, N.J. — Jon Bon Jovi wants duped fans to know he’s not dead, and he has posted a photo proving it. False reports of the New Jersey-born musician’s death spread online after a fake news release surfaced on social media sites.

Bon Jovi is shown in a picture on his Facebook page holding a sign that reads, “Heaven looks a lot like New Jersey.” Below that is scrawled Monday’s date.

Bon Jovi was performing at a charity concert that night at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank. His publicist confirmed Bon Jovi was alive and well and playing the show.

SALT LAKE CITY — “American Idol” runner-up David Archuleta will take a break from his singing career to serve a two-year proselytizing mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The contestant from the 2007-2008 season made the announcement during a Christmas concert Monday in downtown Salt Lake City, according to KSL.com.

The 20-year-old Miami native, who grew up in Murray, Utah, said he’s not quitting music, but feels a strong call to serve the church.

A video of the concert on Archuleta’s website shows him overwhelmed with emotion and crying as he talks about his plans. The crowd screams wildly with the news and gives him a standing ovation. “It’s not because someone told me that I’m supposed to do it, and not because I no longer want to do music, but because it’s the feeling that I’ve felt I need to do this with my life,” Archuleta told the crowd.

Archuleta was 16 and one of the youngest contestants when he competed on the seventh season of “American Idol.” The runner-up has since released three albums, one of which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. In 2010, he performed with the Grammy-winning Mormon Tabernacle choir at the group’s annual Christmas concert.

Church spokesman Eric Hawkins confirmed that Archuleta had been called on a mission by the faith. Hawkins said he didn’t know when Archuleta was scheduled to report for missionary training. The location of Archuleta’s mission has not been disclosed either by him or church officials.

Statistics released in April show the church has more than 52,200 members currently are serving fulltime proselytizing or service missions worldwide. About 75 percent of missionaries are men between 19 and 21. Single women over 21 and retired couples make up the remaining 25 percent.

NEW YORK — Scientists have found two Earth-sized planets orbiting a star outside the solar system, an encouraging sign for prospects of finding life elsewhere.

The discovery shows that such planets exist and that they can be detected by the Kepler spacecraft, said Francois Fressin of the HarvardSmithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass. They’re the smallest planets found so far that orbit a star resembling our sun.

Scientists are seeking Earthsized planets as potential homes for extraterrestrial life, said Fressin, who reports the new findings in a paper published online Tuesday by the journal Nature. One planet’s diameter is only 3 percent larger than Earth’s, while the other’s diameter is about nine-tenths that of

Earth. They appear to be rocky, like our planet.

But they are too hot to contain life as we know it, with calculated temperatures of about 1,400 degrees and 800 degrees Fahrenheit, he said. Any life found on another plant may not be intelligent; it could be bacteria or mold or some completely unknown form.

Since it was launched in 2009, NASA’s planet-hunting Kepler telescope has found evidence of dozens of possible Earth-sized planets. But Fressin’s report is the first to provide confirmation, said Alan Boss of the Carnegie Institution

for Science in Washington. He’s a member of the Kepler science team but not an author of the paper.

The researchers ruled out a possible alternative explanation for the signals that initially indicated the planets were orbiting the star Kepler-20. The star is 950 lightyears from Earth in the direction of the constellation Lyra.

The planets, called Kepler-20e and Kepler-20f, are part of a fiveplanet system around the star, and their location challenges current understanding of how planets form, scientists said. In our own solar system, the small rocky planets are closest to the sun, while gaseous giants are on the periphery. But the five-planet system has no such dividing line; big and small planets alternate as one moves away from the star.

LONDON - Trees that produce frankincense, a fragrant resin used in incense and perfumes and a central part of the Christmas story, are declining so fast that production could be halved over the next 15 years, scientists said on Wednesday.

In a study published in the British Ecological Society’s Journal of Applied Ecology, ecologists from the Netherlands and Ethiopia looked at large-scale field studies and predicted that tree numbers could decline by 90 percent in the next 50 years.

If fire, grazing and insect attack, the most likely causes of decline, remain unchecked, then frankincense production could be doomed altogether, they warned. Frankincense, best known in religious teachings as one of the gifts laid before the newborn Messiah, is obtained by tapping various species of Boswellia, a small, deciduous tree that grows across Africa from northern Nigeria to the highlands of Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Cutting the Boswellia’s bark produces the frankincense resin, a white substance with a strong, sweet smell. The resin is burnt in churches, mosques and at ceremonies, as well as being used by the perfume industry and in herbal medicines. Despite its economic importance, incense has been traded internationally for thousands of years, little is known about how tapping affects Boswellia populations.

More than 98 percent of Mozilla’s 2010 revenue came from royalties paid by search-engine companies, and by some estimates, Google made up around 85 percent of that. For 2010, Google was basically $100 million of Mozilla’s entire $123 million income.

Chrome browser may have helped fuel the worry surrounding Firefox. Chrome, according to StatCounter, recently passed Firefox up, becoming the second most popular browser globally with a 25.7 percent market share in November 2011.

Though other metrics firms stated slightly different figures, it has begun to look as if Google didn’t need Firefox anymore.

However, there’s no need to speculate anymore as to whether Firefox will limp along or if Microsoft will rush in to fill Google’s gap; Firefox will continue to be propped up for the next few years. Hopefully, over the three year breather, we’ll see some diversification with Firefox to make up for its vulnerabilites.

Stadiumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s future to be settled before Games Reuters

LONDON - The future of Londonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Olympic stadium should be settled before the Games next year after bidders were invited to apply again to use the venue following the collapse of a deal to sell it to soccer club West Ham United.

The stadium in east London, which has cost 486 million pounds to build, will retain an athletics track and have its capacity cut to 60,000 after the Games from 80,000. It will host the world athletics championship in 2017.

Local club West Ham, now playing in the second-tier of English soccer, remain the most likely anchor tenant of a venue that will remain in public ownership.

The government dropped plans

to sell the stadium to West Ham in October, citing â&#x20AC;&#x153;legal paralysisâ&#x20AC;? after Premier League Tottenham Hotspur challenged the decision. Tottenham have since indicated that they intend to focus on building a new stadium adjacent to their historic home in north London.

Bidders to use the stadium have until March to apply, with a decision expected two months later. The Games will take place from July 27-August 12.

Hulkenberg says understanding tyres will be key NICO Hulkenberg believes that understanding the Pirelli tyres in qualifying and race conditions will be key to a strong start on his Formula 1 return with Force India in 2012.

Although the 24-year-old completed almost 2000kms of running for the team in testing and Friday practice during 2012 on the Italian rubber, his last experience of qualifying and racing was for Williams in Abu Dhabi one year ago. This was when Bridgestone still supplying F1 tyres.

Force India will take into account the German’s need to better understand the performance of the Pirelli tyres in qualifying and race conditions during testing as most of his running has been limited to the harder compounds on a green track on Friday mornings.

“It will be tough, but I went through that process last year with Williams as well,” Hulkenberg told AUTOSPORT. “I don’t know exactly how the Pirelli tyres will behave so I will make sure that I get all of the information I need

to learn quickly. “You need to get out there and do the races so that you can learn about them. On a theoretical basis, there is not so much that you can do. You have to drive and learn from it.”

Hulkenberg’s task on his comeback will be made easier by his familiarity with the Silverstone-based team after attending every race in 2011 as reserve driver and running on Fridays on 14 occasions.

Although the relationship between him and the team will

change now that he is a race driver, the fact that he is already comfortable with the personnel should make life easier. “I know everyone in the team and all of the engineers, but I haven’t worked as closely with them as I will as a race driver,” said Hulkenberg.

“I was involved with briefings and spoke to them during the race weekends, so it shouldn’t be difficult. “I’m very comfortable and happy with the guys in the team.”

BANGALORE - India’s Narain Karthikeyan has not given up hope of racing in Formula One next year despite there being only two clear vacancies remaining and a long list of rivals for them. “I had a good Indian Grand Prix and the intention is to see what opportunities are available in Formula One and see how we can conclude something,” the driver told Reuters on the sidelines of a karting event in the Indian city of Bangalore.

“I’m not dealing with it directly. So there are people who are liaising on behalf of me,” added the first Indian to drive in Formula One and still the only one to score points, with Jordan in 2005.

Karthikeyan made his Formula One comeback with Hispania (HRT) this year after five years out, but had to stand aside from the British Grand Prix in July in favour of Red Bull-backed Australian rookie Daniel Ricciardo.

He made a one-off race appearance for his inaugural home grand prix at the Buddh circuit, replacing Italian Vi-

tantonio Liuzzi, and finished 17th and ahead of Ricciardo. Ricciardo has since moved on to Toro Rosso, Red Bull’s sister team, with Spanish veteran Pedro de la Rosa the only driver confirmed by HRT so far.

The Spanish-based team’s owners have also replaced Colin Kolles, who handed Karthikeyan’s his drives at Jordan and HRT, as principal with former racer Luis Perez-Sala now in charge.

Perez-Sala said on Saturday that HRT were in advanced talks with several drivers but gave no details.

“It’s a decision we surely won’t make until the start of next year because, at this stage, who will be the team’s second driver for next season is perhaps the least urgent one right now,” added the Spaniard. He also warned that HRT, who have yet to score a point in two years, would be less competitive next season than they had been at the end of 2011 and were “taking a step back so that we can take two forward.”

The only other team with a declared vacancy is former champions Williams, with whom Karthikeyan worked as a test driver in 2006 and 2007. Germany’s Adrian Sutil is seen as favourite for that seat, unless Williams stick with Brazilian Rubens Barrichello.

Karthikeyan said Kolles had made a strong contribution to HRT but the team was moving on. “With a small team he did a good job. But now the team has a different direction and that’s a good thing,” he said.
