LOS ANGELES - Rap great Snoop Dogg thanked himself on Monday as he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame just days before the 25th anniversary of his debut album “Doggystyle.”

“I want to thank me for believing in me,” the 16-time Grammy nominee said after the star was unveiled on the famed walk.

“I want to thank me for doing all this hard work. I want to thank me for having no days off. I want to thank me for never quitting. I want to thank me for always being a giver, and trying to give more than I receive. I want to thank me for trying to do more right than wrong.

I want to thank me for just being me at all times,” the West Coast hip-hop legend known for his wry sense of humor added.

Diddy breaks silence over ex Kim Porter’s sudden death LOS ANGELES - Hip hop star Sean “Diddy” Combs has broken his silence three days after the death of his former partner Kim Porter, with whom he had three children.

Ms Porter, 47, was Mr Combs’s partner for 13 years.

Emergency services were called to her home around noon last Thursday, according to TMZ, and her cause of death is still under investigation.

The first member of the “Bali Nine” heroin-trafficking gang to be released from prison is expected to leave jail on Wednesday after serving 13 years, in a case that caused a huge diplomatic rift between Indonesia and Australia.

Renae Lawrence, 41, the only female member of the group, was arrested in 2005 when authorities caught her with 2.6 kilogrammes (5.7 pounds) of heroin strapped to her body as she tried to fly out of the international airport on the holiday island of Bali.

She was initially handed a life term, but her sentence was later reduced to 20 years and then further cut due to good behaviour. It was not immediately clear what time she would be released from Bali’s Bangli prison, but officials said she may be freed around midday (0400 GMT).

“Renae Lawrence is in a healthy condition. She seems to be happy, but also a bit nervous,” head of Bangli prison Made Suwendra told AFP. It is likely that Lawrence will be deported shortly after her release.

The Australian Police Commissioner for the state of New South Wales, Mick Fuller, told The Australian newspaper there were two outstanding arrest warrants for Lawrence and that they will speak to her when she returns to the country.

Reports in Australian media said Lawrence could face arrest once she is back home over a high-speed chase involving a stolen vehicle dating back to just before she was arrested in Indonesia.

Of the nine in the original group, ringleaders Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan were executed by firing squad in 2015, sparking a diplomatic row between Australia and Indonesia, which has some of the world’s strictest drug laws including the death penalty.

Another member, Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen, died in prison in June from stomach cancer, while the remaining five are currently serving life sentences. Some critics have lashed out at the Australian police for tipping off their Indonesian counterparts about the gang and putting its members at risk of execution in Indonesia.

High-profile cases like that of Australian Schapelle Corby, who spent more than nine years behind bars for smuggling marijuana into Bali, have stoked concern that Indonesia is becoming a destination for trafficked drugs. “The big event last October, especially the IMF-World Bank Group Annual Meeting 2018 is a factor that can contribute to the increase in foreign tourists, although October is not included in the peak season for foreign tourist arrivals to Bali,” said Yanus.

Until now, said Yanus. Bali is still faced with low season conditions. However, the increase is expected to continuously grow until December 2018. “We are optimistic, the arrival of foreign tourists through Ngurah Rai International Airport will reach 6.27 million according to the target set by the Ministry of Tourism,” he assured. Marijuana addiction: When use becomes abuse

AS marijuana legalization builds momentum across the United States — with Michigan becoming the latest state to allow recreational use by adults — researchers are warning that more studies are needed on the long-term effects of chronic pot smoking on the human brain.

Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States, but little is known about its effect on health or how addictive it is.

According to a 2017 poll conducted by Marist College and Yahoo News, more than half of American adults have tried marijuana at least once in their lives, and nearly 55 million of them, or 22 percent, say they use it currently. Close to 35 million are what the survey calls “regular users,” people who say they use marijuana at least once or twice a month.

“Surprisingly, many people freely admit to using marijuana, but underreporting remains an issue,” said Jonathan Caulkins, a drug policy researcher and professor at Carnegie Mellon University. “To correct for that one should fudge upwards by a factor of 20 to 40 percent.”

With Michigan’s Election Day ballot measure, 10 states and the District of Columbia now allow the drug’s open use; 33 states plus D.C. allow medical use, leaving many to wonder if the U.S. will follow Canada’s lead in legalizing marijuana nationwide.

CONSEQUENCES OF CHRONIC MARIJUANA USE

Nathaniel Warner, 31, a data analyst at the Mayo Clinic in Roch-

ester, Minnesota, first tried marijuana when he was 19, during his freshman year of college. Warner was having a hard time adjusting to campus life at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.

“It was a tough transition for me and I was dealing with social anxiety,” Warner told NBC News.

At first he just smoked on school breaks, three or four times during the school year. “But before I knew it, it was summer and I was smoking daily,” he said. “It just gave me a feeling I had never experienced before.”

After four years of heavy use, Warner noticed that his short-term memory was starting to fray. He avoided talking to people, and festering feelings of anxiety and depression grew. He tried to mask them with weed, deepening his dependency. In 2010 Warner upended his life, breaking up with his girlfriend and seeking recovery.

“I was hopeless. I realized that this lifestyle of being miserable and getting high was never going to change. I didn’t want to go through a 30- to 40-year cycle of going to work and coming home and getting high. I didn’t see an escape from that. That kind of shook me,” Warner said.

Unfortunately, Warner’s story is not uncommon.

While alcohol is more dangerous in terms of acute overdose risk, and also in terms of promoting violence and chronic organ failure, “marijuana — at least as now used in the United States —

creates higher rates of behavioral problems, including dependence, among all its users,” said Caulkins.

IS MARIJUANA ADDICTIVE?

The research leans towards yes.

Studies have shown that chronic marijuana use affects the same brain structures that are involved with addiction.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse suggests that 30 percent of those who use marijuana may have some degree of “marijuana use disorder.”

Marijuana use disorders are often associated with dependence — in which a person feels withdrawal symptoms when not taking the drug. Frequent users report irritability, mood and sleep difficulties, decreased appetite, cravings, restlessness and physical discomfort that peak within the first week after quitting and last up to two weeks.

Marijuana dependence occurs when the brain adapts to large amounts of the drug, requiring more and more to create the desired euphoric effect.

Marijuana use disorder becomes addiction when the smoker cannot stop using the drug even though it interferes with many aspects of his or her life. Estimates of the number of people addicted to marijuana are controversial, in part because studies of substance use often use dependence as a measure of addiction even though it is possible to be dependent without being addicted.

In Warner’s case, he developed

both a dependence and an addiction. The first time he seriously decided to quit he gave his stash to his girlfriend to keep it away from him. Later that day, he came home and sweet-talked her into giving it back.

“Even though I was serious at the time about getting clean, I relapsed,” he said. “The thing about addiction is that you can wake up and be 100 percent convinced that you won’t use again. You could take a lie detector test and you’d pass with flying colors, but 12 hours later a trigger may cause you to change your mind and you might get high again.”

Researchers estimate that 4 million people in the United States met the criteria for marijuana use disorder in 2015, but only 138,000 of them voluntarily sought treatment.

HOW BAD IS CHRONIC MARIJUANA USE?

Most experts agree that more research needs to be done to accurately answer this question. First, there is no universal definition of what constitutes “chronic” use.

substantial increase in “psychoticlike experiences” in teenage users.

The study also reported adverse effects on cognitive development and increased symptoms of depression.

Other studies show that chronic use may even interfere with normal development of the adolescent brain.

Patricia Conrad, professor of psychiatry at the University of Montreal, believes that more research needs to be done to see the effects of chronic marijuana use on the brain.

“Potency has increased over time,” said Conrad. “More sophisticated technology is being used to extract CBD oil from the product, resulting in more and more products with potent levels,” said Conrad.

One study that received a tremendous amount of publicity looked at 38,600 samples of cannabis confiscated from 1995 to 2014.

Analysis of these samples found that the average amount of THC, the psychoactive portion of the drug, rose from 4 percent in 1995 to over 12 percent in 2014. During that same time, cannabidiol, the non-psychoactive component of marijuana, fell from 0.28 percent to 0.15 percent. This shift in the ratio of THC to CBD has a pronounced effect on the drug’s perceived potency.

The average potency of the flower product sold in Washington’s state-licensed markets is over 20 percent, and the average potency of extract-based products — like oils for vaping pens, dabs and the like — is in the neighborhood of 70 percent, said Caulkins. He believes more research needs to be done to see how this difference in potency affects the body, compared with the weaker product studied in the past.

As more is learned about the the effects of marijuana on the brain and body, experts hope to figure out if marijuana is a drug that can be managed like alcohol or if it is a highly addictive drug that needs to be highly regulated, like tobacco.

Warner has been sober since Oct. 17, 2010. He thanks his parents, the Mayo Clinic intensive addiction program and his 12-step recovery group for helping him to get back on track.

“Addiction is real. It’s a slow downhill kind of thing … it takes some years to get to that low point, and years to slowly build yourself back up,” said Warner.

“Recovery isn’t easy, even for a guy like me who had resources, a support system, and no really bad consequences, like losing my job or going to jail.” (IBP/net)

Bengkala Landfill can last less than 4 years

SINGARAJA — High volume of household waste in Buleleng has recently begun to threaten the capacity of the local governmentowned landfill (TPA). As evidence, the condition of landfill at Bengkala village, Kubutambahan, is now starting to overload and the currently remaining land is only able to function less than the next four years. Due to this problem, the Buleleng Environmental Agency (DLH) began to look for solutions, where one of which is to get waste collection. The movement to only sort organic waste will be processed in the landfill into compost. All non-organic materials are directed to be recycled, while the government recommends the nonorganic waste or plastic waste to be sold for recycling.

Data at the DLH Buleleng said that since its operation, DLH processed the waste at Bengkala Landfill with the Sanitary Landfill technique. This technique is applied by stacking it over the plot.

Every day, the average volume of garbage collected at Bengkala landfill varies between 400 and 450 cubic meters. Of that volume, 4.8 hectares of landfill are predicted to only last less than the next four years.

Head of the DLH Buleleng, Putu Ariyadi Pribadi, last weekend admitted the condition of the landfill is under the threat of overloading.

For this reason, according to the evaluation results by the Team for

the Acceleration of Settlement and Sanitation Development Program (PPSP), the district government is reminded to reduce landfill waste. This effort is only possible if the selection of garbage is done massively. “If the waste entering the landfill is only processed into compost, then the landfill capacity will be able to operate longer. To that end, we have been instructed to promote the organic and nonorganic waste sorting,” he said.

On the other hand, Ariyadi added that another strategy carried out to prevent the landfill from overloading is by handling household waste and processing waste in each TPS3R and “Waste Bank.” So far, many villages or community groups in the area have been involved in sorting waste. DLH also continuously pushes this program, so that around 50 percent of the waste coming into TPA is in the form of residues and the rest is processed in the TPS3R and Waste Banks. Ariadi hoped that central government will provide financial assistance for the development of the Bengkala Landfill related to the processing of waste and wastewater from the sludge water treatment plant (IPLT).

“This landfill will last longer and in the future we will propose more assistance for the development of landfill as well as the waste and wastewater management,” he explained. (kmb38)

Various types of male are made ranging from bonsai, fruit to the shape of a canoe.

Each male is composed of hundreds of eggs and some even reach 500 eggs. After being paraded and arrived at the mosque, hundreds of the eggs will be distributed to people having filled the mosque yard.

Another tradition ahead of the distribution of eggs is the cutting of baby hair. Residents having babies and will cut their hair, this is a very appropriate moment. A few residents cut off the hair of their

children while being carried.

Chief of East Loloan hamlet, Mustahidin, stated that in addition to the male parade and baby haircut, a yellow rice sow process is mixed with coins. This procession is known as Ambur Salim.

Ghosn custody extended as crisis deepens at Nissan

TOKYO - Japanese authorities Wednesday extended Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn’s detention by 10 days, as it emerged the car giant itself could face charges over the alleged financial misconduct that laid low its once-loved leader.

Monday’s stunning arrest of the millionaire auto tycoon, who is credited with turning around the Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi Motors alliance, sent shockwaves through the global car sector, corporate Japan and beyond.

On Wednesday, several media reported that the Tokyo district court had ordered the 64-year-old Brazil-born businessman held for a further 10 days as prosecutors step up their investigation over the alleged underreporting of Ghosn’s package by about five billion yen ($44.5 million).

Prosecutors had 48 hours after his arrest to either press formal charges, release him or request this 10-day custody extension to continue the probe.

The titan of the car industry is being held in a detention centre in northern Tokyo in conditions far removed from his flashy lifestyle. “In principle, he will be all alone in a cell,” lawyer Ayano Kanezuka told AFP. “There is everything you need, heating, a bed but conditions are spartan,” said Kanezuka’s colleague Lionel Vincent, who also said there would be an inner courtyard with bars.

The crisis appeared to be going from bad to worse for Nissan, as the Asahi Shimbun reported that prosecutors believe the firm also had a case to answer. Both Nissan and

the authorities declined to comment.

- ‘Too much authority’ Nissan’s board will decide Thursday whether to remove him as chairman, a staggering reversal of fortune for the oncerevered manager who created the three-way alliance which together sells more cars worldwide than any other automaker.

Ghosn’s fate appears all but sealed after his hand-picked replacement as CEO, Hiroto Saikawa, launched an astonishing broadside at his mentor, saying “too much authority” had been placed in his hands and lamenting the “dark side of the Ghosn era.”

Saikawa pointedly refused to offer the deep “apology bow” that usually accompanies corporate scandals in Japan and played down the role Ghosn had personally played in reviving the firm’s fortunes.

However, in France, Renault said it was sticking with the fallen manager as chief executive although it named chief operating officer Thierry Bollore as deputy CEO, handing him the “same powers” as the “temporarily incapacitated” Ghosn.

After an emergency board meeting, Renault urged its sister company Nissan to share “evidence seemingly gathered” against Ghosn from a months-long internal investigation, saying it was unable to comment on the charges without this information.

Paris and Tokyo have been scrambling to contain the fall-out from the arrest, with the finance ministers of both countries declaring strong support for “one of the greatest symbols of Franco-Japanese industrial

cooperation.”

The scandal -- the latest in a string to affect Japan Inc. -- wiped millions off the stock value of all three companies but Nissan bounced back marginally in opening Tokyo trade, climbing nearly half a percentage point

in a falling market.

And Ghosn won some support on the street of Tokyo, with passer-by Yoshiaki Watanabe telling AFP: “I think this is someone who was able to do what we Japanese, stuck in our ways, were not able to do.” (afp)

BUSINESS Brexit, Italy, trade: Risks piling up for Europe’s economy

How those risks play out will decide whether the economic upswing that began in early 2013 and has created 9.5 million more jobs ages gracefully for several more years — or meets an early demise.

The economy of the 19 countries that use the euro stumbled in JulySeptember, when quarterly growth halved to 0.2 percent. Some see that as a natural slowdown after much stronger, trade-fueled expansion of 0.7 percent at the end of last year.

But worries rose this week after new data showed Germany’s economy, the currency union’s largest, shrank 0.2 percent in the third quarter. Much of the fall can be attributed to delays faced by major automakers like Daimler and Volkswagen in getting cars certified under new emissions rules. However, a slowdown in exports also played a role, raising questions of how much more pain the U.S. trade war and uncertainties like Brexit could create for Europe’s many exporters.

Holger Schmieding, chief economist at Berenberg Bank in London, says that surveys of business activity “point to a further loss of momentum in late 2018.”

A key risk is the conflict between Italy’s populist government, which wants to spend more on social welfare, and the European Union’s executive Commission, which is demanding Italy lower its budget deficit under the rules that go with belonging to the euro. The danger is that if the Italian government persists in running larger deficits, its borrowing costs rise to unsustainable levels and the country is unable to roll over its debt at an affordable interest rate.

Debt costs spiked in 2011 but fell after a reform-minded government took office and the European Central Bank promised to backstop the debt of countries that are facing high debt costs but show a willingness to correct their finances. Italy is “the most serious risk facing the eurozone,” Schmieding says.

He says an Italian financial crisis could erupt next year, but that it is more likely that the country would muddle through until a new recession — perhaps in 2021 — exposes the weaknesses in the economy.

Then there’s Brexit. European officials are waiting to see if Prime Minister Theresa May can push through a deal on an orderly exit from the European Union. If the deal is rejected in parliament, in a vote that could be held in December, Britain could wind up leaving in March 2019 without a settled trade relationship with its biggest trading partner, the EU. That could reinstate tariffs and border checks on trade worth hundreds of billions of dollars.

Add to that the trade conflict between the U.S. and China. President Donald Trump has imposed new import taxes on Chinese goods, and the Chinese have responded with tariffs of their own. Europe is getting sideswiped by the U.S.-China collision as global trade slows.

“It is not our base-case scenario, but a fully-fledged trade war could obviously and easily push the eurozone economy toward the brink of recession,” said economist Carsten

Brzeski at ING Germany.

It’s not as if things are falling apart. Unemployment, now at 8.1 percent, continues to fall from its 2013 peak above 12 percent as the eurozone slowly heals from a debt crisis that threatened to break it up in 2011-2012. Despite its woes, the auto industry remains solidly profitable, with major employers like Volkswagen, Daimler, BMW, PSA Group, and Fiat Chrysler enjoying steady profits in an auto market that grew 2.9 percent in the first half of the year ahead of the certification bottlenecks as consumers shelled out for new SUVs. But none of that has stopped speculation about the future path of the European economy, especially with global trade slowing.

European Central Bank President Draghi said the bank was sticking with its plan to phase out its bond purchase stimulus program at yearend. The purchases are a way of pushing newly created money into the banking system, and, it is hoped, the wider economy. But he indicated that the bank could postpone a first interest rate increase, currently expected no earlier than September

Moreover, the discovery and preservation are not only limited to its form, but also its philosophy, nobility and universal values.

If noted, every BAF implementation has great impact on the role of talented young generation of Bali. It has not reached the artists as a whole because the presentation is only made by those very same art troupes. Facebook’s Zuckerberg says he is not considering resigning

WASHINGTON - Embattled Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Tuesday he has no plans to resign, sounding defiant after a rough year for the social platform.

“That’s not the plan,” Zuckerberg told CNN Business when asked if he would consider stepping down as chairman.

He also defended Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, who has drawn criticism over her handling of the social media giant’s recent crises.

“Sheryl is a really important part of this company and is leading a lot of the efforts for a lot of the biggest issues we have,” said Zuckerberg.

“She’s been an important partner to me for 10 years. I’m really proud of the work we’ve done together and I hope that we work together for decades more to come.”

Facebook has stumbled from one mess to another this year as it grappled with continuing fallout from Russia’s use of the platform to interfere in the 2016 US presidential election, the Cambridge Analytica scandal in which user data was harnessed in a bid to help candidate Donald Trump, and a huge security breach involving millions of accounts.

Most recently, an investigative

piece published last week by The New York Times said Facebook misled the public about what it knew about Russia’s election meddling and used a PR firm to spread negative stories about other Silicon Valley companies and thus deflect anger away from itself.

“It is not clear to me at all that the report is right,” Zuckerberg said of the Times article.

“A lot of the things that were in that report, we talked to the reporters ahead of time and told them that from everything that we’d seen, that wasn’t true and they chose to print it anyway.”

Zuckerberg also defended his company against the broader wave of flak it has taken this year.

“A lot of the criticism around the biggest issues has been fair, but I do think that if we are going to be real, there is this bigger picture as well, which is that we have a different world view than some of the folks who are covering us,” he said.

“There are big issues, and I’m not trying to say that there aren’t...

Indonesian Budi Ahmad used to live openly as a gay man without fear of becoming a target for violence in the world’s biggest Muslim-majority nation. Not any more. The country of 260 million is in the grip of a moral panic, with critics saying the vulnerable LGBT minority is being used as a political punching bag in the run-up to 2019 elections.

Hardline rhetoric and a string of arrests have raised fears among the community. “There could be more persecution and we’re scared that the public might become vigilantes,” said Ahmad, who agreed to speak to AFP using a pseudonym.

The 29-year-old, from a small town in the province of West Sumatra, said family and friends in the tight-knit area have long been aware of his sexual orientation.

But he said the public mood was turning increasingly ugly and he was now confronted with deepening hos-

tility. “People look at me wherever I go these days. Some avoid me,” said Ahmad of his non-traditional masculine image.

“Now when I go to withdraw money from the ATM, for example, there are people staring at me. It never used to be this bad.”Indonesia’s LGBT community has always been vilified as immoral.

But the recent police crackdown -- including authorities hosing down a group of transgender women in what they called a “mandatory bath” -- comes against the backdrop of a recent lurch toward religious conservatism. The shift, led by increasingly powerful hardliners, has dented Indonesia’s reputation for moderate Islam.

Last week, thousands of antiLGBT demonstrators marched outside the capital Jakarta, as some local politicians called for carte blanche to detain and “rehabilitate” members

of the minority. Several mosques in West Java were recently urged by the local government to conduct sermons on the dangers of homosexuality.

And Indonesia’s biggest Muslim organisation -- the 80-million-member Nahdlatul Ulama -- has called for a clampdown on same-sex relations.

- ‘Cynical political gain’ -

Concerns have been aggravated by president Joko Widodo selecting a conservative cleric, known for his disparaging views of the gay community and other minorities, as his running mate for next year’s elections.

A poll this year showed nearly 90 percent of Indonesians felt “threatened” by the LGBT community, while a 2013 Pew survey said 72 percent of Indonesian Muslims supported replacing the secular code with Islamic law, which bans gay sex. “(The elections) could mean an uptick in politicians scapegoating...

people for cynical political gain,” said Human Rights Watch researcher Kyle Knight. “The verbal threats politicians issue can quickly metastasise into physical attacks.”

Police arrested at least 300 suspected LGBT people last year -- a record -- mostly under an antipornography law as homosexuality and gay sex are legal in Indonesia.

This month, 10 people described as “suspected lesbians” were arrested in West Sumatra, following the detention of another eight lesbians and transgender people in October.

“This situation is alarming as the hateful abuses by law enforcement bodies... are seen as a normal practice by many people,” said Usman Hamid, Amnesty International Indonesia’s Executive Director.

- ‘Eradicate LGBT’ -

Officials are unfazed by the criticism. “We’re being consistent in our

efforts to eradicate LGBT (behaviour) because it’s very destructive,” said West Sumatra deputy governor Nasrul Abit, adding that thousands of people were having “deviant sex” in the region.

Parliament is considering a move to criminalise sex outside marriage -- including gay couples -- while the health ministry previously announced plans to release a medical guide classifying homosexuality as a mental disorder. The UN human rights chief and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have criticised the proposed legal overhaul.

Authorities have also taken aim at social media, arresting two men for links to a LGBT community Facebook page. Google in January pulled one of the world’s largest gay dating apps from the Indonesian version of its online store in response to government demands.(afp)

Green lifts Raptors to NBA win, Blazers take West lead

WASHINGTON - Danny Green sank a jump shot with half a second remaining Tuesday to lift the Toronto Raptors over the Orlando Magic 93-91 and into the Eastern Conference lead.

The falls are only several minutes’ walk down the trail beyond the shops, where you’ll enjoy the impressively green valley panorama with cascading water as a centrepiece. Dense foliage frames the falls, and the water volume is impressive at almost any time of year, but normally at its strongest during the wet season (October to April). You can go down to the vast pebbly base and enjoy a dip in the plunge pool, but this is not advised after heavy downpours, due to the risk of flash floods.

HONG KONG - A 17-year-old racing driver who fractured her spine in a horrifying crash at the Formula Three Macau Grand Prix has vowed to return to the sport after surviving surgery lasting nearly half a day.

German Sophia Floersch flew off the track on Sunday, hurtling into marshals and photographers, before being rushed to a Macau hospital in a stable condition.

“I survived the operation which took 11 hours. Hope from now on it only gets better,” she wrote in a Facebook post on her official account late Tuesday.

“I’m going to come back!” she added.

Floersch said she had to stay “a few more days” in Macau until it is possible to transport her elsewhere.

She thanked the medical staff who treated her as well as the people who helped at the scene of the crash for their “encouraging, calming words in these tough minutes in my car”.

Dramatic footage captured gasps

from the crowd as the Van Amersfoort Racing driver’s car flew through the air and into safety netting at the Guia Circuit’s Lisboa bend, a sharp right-hander.

Running 16th, she lost control in a contact down the straight, launched off a kerb and bounced off Tsuboi’s TOM’s Racing car.

“My thoughts are also with everyone who was involved in the accident. I hope everybody is healthy,” Floersch said in her post.

The International Motoring Federation (FIA) has said it will investigate the crash.

At least three people have died on the Macau Grand Prix circuit.

Ahead of 2022 World Cup, Qatar still has a long way to go LUGANO — With four years to go before the next World Cup opens in Qatar, the small gulf country’s national soccer team is on the rise but still has a long, long way to go.

Qatar surprisingly won the right to host the 2022 tournament eight years ago, when it was ranked 113th in the world by FIFA. On Wednesday, exactly four years before the next World Cup is scheduled to open at Lusail Stadium outside Doha, the country still will be only No. 96.

There are positives, however, including Qatar’s 1-0 victory over Switzerland last week in a friendly match — an eye-opening result against a team that reached the round of 16 at the last two World Cups.

“It’s a big win for us especially (because) a lot of people don’t know us,” Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo said. “I think they will know us more after this game ... Now we are only focusing on playing big games so we will get respect and people will know us.”

Respect has been hard to come by for Qatar’s national team and the country’s hosting of the tournament in general. The team’s ranking has fluctuated between No. 78 and No. 112 since the December 2010 vote, and concerns about labor conditions for migrant workers has been an ongoing issue.

The win over Switzerland and subsequent 2-2 draw against Iceland were good signs, though a far cry from the progress Iceland has made in the same eight years, rising from No. 110 in the FIFA rankings to No. 36 following a quarterfinal run at the 2016 European Championship.

Still, the team is improving under coach Felix Sanchez, who spent a decade as a youth coach at Barcelona before becoming Qatar’s ninth coach in eight years.

Against the Swiss, the Qataris defended well and played their way out of danger rather than kicking long balls out from the back. The passing was crisp and accurate and it was from one of the frequent attempts at a breakaway that Akram Afif scored the game’s only goal in the 86th minute.

They’re not quite Barcelona, but they’re not too bad, either.

“I was working there for 10 years,” Sanchez said of his time at Barcelona. “When you go to work in a different place you need to adapt your philosophy. There are many things that we tried to keep and there are games where we can show more.

“There are games where we cannot do 100 percent what we have to do and of course you have the opposition in front ... we need to do more things that we’re not used to do but it’s the way to compete.”

Most of the players who traveled to Europe for the two friendlies are young and all are based in Qatar — 90 percent of them having graduated from the state-of-the-art Aspire training academy. But with an average age of 24, many will be hitting their peak in 2022.

Qatar has also beaten Iraq, China, Palestine and Ecuador this year, but sterner competition is expected next year at both the Asian Cup and the Copa America, where the country is competing as a guest nation and could end up facing Brazil and Argentina.

“It’s steps we have to do to arrive in 2022 ready to compete,” said Sanchez, who knows his players well after working with most of them on under-age teams and at Aspire.

“Of course, for the players it’s a big motivation to play against such teams and start to feel what is the real pressure in official competition against one of the top national teams in the world like Brazil, Argentina or one of those.”

Although Sanchez seems like the perfect fit because of his years of experience in Qatar, there is no guarantee he will still have his job in four years. Especially with high-profile possibilities like Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez, both with experience playing in Qatar, being mentioned as potential future candidates.

Guardiola’s contract as manager at Manchester City expires in 2021, while Xavi — who plays for Qatari club Al Sadd — has said he would like to someday move into coaching.

“Of course it will be a dream to be there but four years in football is ... you cannot say,” Sanchez said, smiling wryly. “Hopefully.” (ap)

Neymar injured as Brazil beat Cameroon

Neymar could be an injury doubt for Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League clash with Liverpool next week after limping off during Brazil’s 1-0 friendly win over Cameroon on Tuesday.

The forward suffered an apparent groin problem and was replaced in the eighth minute, to boos from the crowd in the central English town of Milton Keynes.

Everton’s Richarlison, Neymar’s replacement, headed in on the stroke of half-time for his third Brazil goal on his sixth appearance to secure victory for the Selecao. A mixture of cheers and jeers welcomed Neymar, his World Cup theatrics in Russia providing ammunition for his detractors.

And there was little sympathy when the star attraction went off after making little impact. He sought

treatment after five minutes and returned to send a curling right-footed shot high and wide within a minute.

He immediately collapsed before being replaced.

But Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar played down fears of a serious problem. “He felt discomfort,” Lasmar told reporters. “He will need a bit more time to evaluate it and take a scan, but in principle it is not a serious injury.” Richarlison appeared dangerous from the moment he was introduced and Roberto Firmino went close three times.

The Liverpool striker almost turned in Willian’s cross but Andre Onana made a fine instinctive save.

Firmino next sent a free header wide from Richarlison’s cross and was then denied by the goalkeeper from point-blank range. Richarlison scored from the resulting corner,

powerfully heading in Willian’s set-piece.

The UEFA Nations League might not have been welcomed by some clubs, but Kosovo is top of Group D3 after claiming their first ever competitive international wins.

Group D3 and boost their Euro qualifying hopes. But they got off to a dream start, with Heerenveen midfielder Zeneli putting them ahead in only the second minute.

HONG KONG - A 17-year-old racing driver who fractured her spine in a horrifying crash at the Formula Three Macau Grand Prix has vowed to return to the sport after surviving surgery lasting nearly half a day.

German Sophia Floersch flew off the track on Sunday, hurtling into marshals and photographers, before being rushed to a Macau hospital in a stable condition.

“I survived the operation which took 11 hours. Hope from now on it only gets better,” she wrote in a Facebook post on her official account late Tuesday.

“I’m going to come back!” she added.

Floersch said she had to stay “a few more days” in Macau until it is possible to transport her elsewhere.

She thanked the medical staff who treated her as well as the people who helped at the scene of the crash for their “encouraging, calming words in these tough minutes in my car”.

Dramatic footage captured gasps

from the crowd as the Van Amersfoort Racing driver’s car flew through the air and into safety netting at the Guia Circuit’s Lisboa bend, a sharp right-hander.

Running 16th, she lost control in a contact down the straight, launched off a kerb and bounced off Tsuboi’s TOM’s Racing car.

Up to 85,000 children ‘dead of starvation or disease in Yemen’

Facebook’s Zuckerberg says he is not considering resigning

WASHINGTON - Embattled Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Tuesday he has no plans to resign, sounding defiant after a rough year for the social platform.

“That’s not the plan,” Zuckerberg told CNN Business when asked if he would consider stepping down as chairman.

He also defended Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, who has drawn criticism over her handling of the social media giant’s recent crises.

“Sheryl is a really important part of this company and is leading a lot of the efforts for a lot of the biggest issues we have,” said Zuckerberg.

“She’s been an important partner to me for 10 years. I’m really proud of the work we’ve done together and I hope that we work together for decades more to come.”

Facebook has stumbled from one mess to another this year as it grappled with continuing fallout from Russia’s use of the platform to interfere in the 2016 US presidential election, the Cambridge Analytica scandal in which user data was harnessed in a bid to help candidate Donald Trump, and a huge security breach involving millions of accounts.

Most recently, an investigative

piece published last week by The New York Times said Facebook misled the public about what it knew about Russia’s election meddling and used a PR firm to spread negative stories about other Silicon Valley companies and thus deflect anger away from itself.

“It is not clear to me at all that the report is right,” Zuckerberg said of the Times article.

“A lot of the things that were in that report, we talked to the reporters ahead of time and told them that from everything that we’d seen, that wasn’t true and they chose to print it anyway.”

Zuckerberg also defended his company against the broader wave of flak it has taken this year.

“A lot of the criticism around the biggest issues has been fair, but I do think that if we are going to be real, there is this bigger picture as well, which is that we have a different world view than some of the folks who are covering us,” he said.

“There are big issues, and I’m not trying to say that there aren’t...

But I do think that sometimes, you can get the flavor from some of the coverage that that’s all there is, and I don’t think that that’s right either.” (afp)

DUBAI - As many as 85,000 infants under the age of five may have died from starvation or disease since 2015 in war-ravaged Yemen, humanitarian organisation Save the Children said Wednesday.

It said the estimate was based on data compiled by the United Nations, which has warned that up to 14 million people are at risk of famine in Yemen, where Saudi-backed forces are battling Iran-aligned Huthi rebels.

“For every child killed by bombs and bullets, dozens are starving to death and it’s entirely preventable,” said Tamer Kirolos, Save the Children’s country director in Yemen.

“Children who die in this way suffer immensely as their vital organ functions slow down and eventually stop,” he said.

Indonesian Budi Ahmad used to live openly as a gay man without fear of becoming a target for violence in the world’s biggest Muslim-majority nation. Not any more. The country of 260 million is in the grip of a moral panic, with critics saying the vulnerable LGBT minority is being used as a political punching bag in the run-up to 2019 elections.

Hardline rhetoric and a string of arrests have raised fears among the community. “There could be more persecution and we’re scared that the public might become vigilantes,” said Ahmad, who agreed to speak to AFP using a pseudonym.

The 29-year-old, from a small town in the province of West Sumatra, said family and friends in the tight-knit area have long been aware of his sexual orientation.

But he said the public mood was turning increasingly ugly and he was now confronted with deepening hos-

tility. “People look at me wherever I go these days. Some avoid me,” said Ahmad of his non-traditional masculine image.

“Now when I go to withdraw money from the ATM, for example, there are people staring at me. It never used to be this bad.”Indonesia’s LGBT community has always been vilified as immoral.

But the recent police crackdown -- including authorities hosing down a group of transgender women in what they called a “mandatory bath” -- comes against the backdrop of a recent lurch toward religious conservatism. The shift, led by increasingly powerful hardliners, has dented Indonesia’s reputation for moderate Islam.

Last week, thousands of antiLGBT demonstrators marched outside the capital Jakarta, as some local politicians called for carte blanche to detain and “rehabilitate” members

of the minority. Several mosques in West Java were recently urged by the local government to conduct sermons on the dangers of homosexuality.

And Indonesia’s biggest Muslim organisation -- the 80-million-member Nahdlatul Ulama -- has called for a clampdown on same-sex relations.

- ‘Cynical political gain’ -

Concerns have been aggravated by president Joko Widodo selecting a conservative cleric, known for his disparaging views of the gay community and other minorities, as his running mate for next year’s elections.

A poll this year showed nearly 90 percent of Indonesians felt “threatened” by the LGBT community, while a 2013 Pew survey said 72 percent of Indonesian Muslims supported replacing the secular code with Islamic law, which bans gay sex. “(The elections) could mean an uptick in politicians scapegoating...

people for cynical political gain,” said Human Rights Watch researcher Kyle Knight. “The verbal threats politicians issue can quickly metastasise into physical attacks.”

Police arrested at least 300 suspected LGBT people last year -- a record -- mostly under an antipornography law as homosexuality and gay sex are legal in Indonesia.

This month, 10 people described as “suspected lesbians” were arrested in West Sumatra, following the detention of another eight lesbians and transgender people in October.

“This situation is alarming as the hateful abuses by law enforcement bodies... are seen as a normal practice by many people,” said Usman Hamid, Amnesty International Indonesia’s Executive Director.

- ‘Eradicate LGBT’ -

Officials are unfazed by the criticism. “We’re being consistent in our

efforts to eradicate LGBT (behaviour) because it’s very destructive,” said West Sumatra deputy governor Nasrul Abit, adding that thousands of people were having “deviant sex” in the region.

Parliament is considering a move to criminalise sex outside marriage -- including gay couples -- while the health ministry previously announced plans to release a medical guide classifying homosexuality as a mental disorder. The UN human rights chief and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have criticised the proposed legal overhaul.

Authorities have also taken aim at social media, arresting two men for links to a LGBT community Facebook page. Google in January pulled one of the world’s largest gay dating apps from the Indonesian version of its online store in response to government demands.(afp)

BUSINESS Brexit, Italy, trade: Risks piling up for Europe’s economy

How those risks play out will decide whether the economic upswing that began in early 2013 and has created 9.5 million more jobs ages gracefully for several more years — or meets an early demise.

The economy of the 19 countries that use the euro stumbled in JulySeptember, when quarterly growth halved to 0.2 percent. Some see that as a natural slowdown after much stronger, trade-fueled expansion of 0.7 percent at the end of last year.

But worries rose this week after new data showed Germany’s economy, the currency union’s largest, shrank 0.2 percent in the third quarter. Much of the fall can be attributed to delays faced by major automakers like Daimler and Volkswagen in getting cars certified under new emissions rules. However, a slowdown in exports also played a role, raising questions of how much more pain the U.S. trade war and uncertainties like Brexit could create for Europe’s many exporters.

Holger Schmieding, chief economist at Berenberg Bank in London, says that surveys of business activity “point to a further loss of momentum in late 2018.”

A key risk is the conflict between Italy’s populist government, which wants to spend more on social welfare, and the European Union’s executive Commission, which is demanding Italy lower its budget deficit under the rules that go with belonging to the euro. The danger is that if the Italian government persists in running larger deficits, its borrowing costs rise to unsustainable levels and the country is unable to roll over its debt at an affordable interest rate.

Debt costs spiked in 2011 but fell after a reform-minded government took office and the European Central Bank promised to backstop the debt of countries that are facing high debt costs but show a willingness to correct their finances. Italy is “the most serious risk facing the eurozone,” Schmieding says.

He says an Italian financial crisis could erupt next year, but that it is more likely that the country would muddle through until a new recession — perhaps in 2021 — exposes the weaknesses in the economy.

Then there’s Brexit. European officials are waiting to see if Prime Minister Theresa May can push through a deal on an orderly exit from the European Union. If the deal is rejected in parliament, in a vote that could be held in December, Britain could wind up leaving in March 2019 without a settled trade relationship with its biggest trading partner, the EU. That could reinstate tariffs and border checks on trade worth hundreds of billions of dollars.

Add to that the trade conflict between the U.S. and China. President Donald Trump has imposed new import taxes on Chinese goods, and the Chinese have responded with tariffs of their own. Europe is getting sideswiped by the U.S.-China collision as global trade slows.

“It is not our base-case scenario, but a fully-fledged trade war could obviously and easily push the eurozone economy toward the brink of recession,” said economist Carsten

Brzeski at ING Germany.

It’s not as if things are falling apart. Unemployment, now at 8.1 percent, continues to fall from its 2013 peak above 12 percent as the eurozone slowly heals from a debt crisis that threatened to break it up in 2011-2012. Despite its woes, the auto industry remains solidly profitable, with major employers like Volkswagen, Daimler, BMW, PSA Group, and Fiat Chrysler enjoying steady profits in an auto market that grew 2.9 percent in the first half of the year ahead of the certification bottlenecks as consumers shelled out for new SUVs. But none of that has stopped speculation about the future path of the European economy, especially with global trade slowing.

European Central Bank President Draghi said the bank was sticking with its plan to phase out its bond purchase stimulus program at yearend. The purchases are a way of pushing newly created money into the banking system, and, it is hoped, the wider economy. But he indicated that the bank could postpone a first interest rate increase, currently expected no earlier than September

BAF May Not Just Become Peak of Art Creativity

The Bali Arts Festival (BAF) held every year is proved to have been a powerful medium to explore, preserve and develop the arts. This year’s art extravaganza does not only have a positive impact on the artists, but also on creative industry. Moreover, the discovery and preservation are not only limited to its form, but also its philosophy, nobility and universal values.

FRANKFURT - Europe’s five-year economic expansion is facing a mid-life crisis as it copes with potential debt troubles in Italy, a U.S.-China trade war and the risk of a disorderly British exit from the European Union.

“There is certainly no reason why the expansion in the euro area should abruptly come to an end,” Draghi said Friday in a speech in Frankfurt.

Armed with knowledge and the art as representation of civilization, Balinese people, especially the artists, are able to develop the art through creation, innovation and cultural adaptation. As a result, it remains to survive and runs sustainably in the context of changing times. In the current development, in the capacity of Bali as an international tourist destination, the BAF has played a role as a medium to improve the welfare of the artists and their community.

If noted, every BAF implementation has great impact on the role of talented young generation of Bali. As evidence, creative young people are able to preserve the arts inherited by their ancestors, and creatively gave birth to new works of art. Prestige demands them to compete, so that it demonstrates the quality of the art of each region to be the best and superior.

The artists appointed to represent never hesitate to appear and to be the best. It makes the participation of all the districts and municipality in Bali always display their art well and nicely. They perform optimally by promoting creativity and innovation, but do not leave the traditional norms. Then, will the BAF only become the peak of the art process that is just enough to get there?

At the first appearance in 1979 on the idea of ??the late Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Mantra, the BAF aiming to accommodate the artworks, art aspirations, art reconstruction, art innovation, art attractions and art appreciation may have been answered. However, when the BAF has entered the 39th year, is there any thought for its continuation or is it enough to get to this point?

During the long passage of the BAF, it should not only develop the art, but must also be followed by the development of the management. After accommodating the best work of art, the government as the organizers must also think about the continuation, so that the arts having developed will not only live during the BAF and then go extinct after the event comes to an end. It is very much deplored, if the artistic process of the generation is only stagnant until in the BAF. Bali government should have thought about the continuity of the various works of art having been featured in the BAF. It can be done by providing a medium, a wider opportunities to express the results of their creation. For example, the art troupes becoming the best get the opportunity to be an envoy of Bali to appear in national or international events, such as joining the art competitions, festival or art parade.

The artists or art troupes having performed well in the BAF should be given the opportunity as an art mission that promotes local culture outside the region or overseas. If too excessive, then they can also be given the opportunity to welcome official guests or as an art envoy at the international event held on this Island of the Gods.

I Ketut Keplug, a traditional drummer of Denpasar, said that giving the opportunity to appear can serve as a reward to those who succeed in artistic creativity. It should not even be dominated by certain people that do not play a role in the BAF. “Showing off superior arts from different supporters will certainly be able to give new nuances. Besides, it can serve as reflection that Balinese people have a variety of arts,” he said.

Similar opinion was also stated by I Wayan Weda, an artist from Tabanan, who cares about younger generation. According to him, this time many art troupes appearing in the BAF are in suspended animation after the BAF. They must be given the breath to stay alive. “Well, the opportunity to appear again will make the art troupes more passionate to seriously pursue their profession. They should not even switch professions because there is no chance to get earnings,” he added.

Prof. Dr. I Made Surada, a lecturer of the State Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN) of Denpasar, said that BAF organizer should be more creative in creating space and giving awards to the best participants.

For example, the champions of inscribing

palm-leaf manuscript, Balinese literature, story-telling and other competitions need to be given a further opportunity. “The work of participating contest is very good. But unfortunately, after getting their champions where do they go? This sustainability needs to be considered. Do not just practice for the sake of BAF, after that disappears. Each male is composed of hundreds of eggs and some even reach 500 eggs. After being paraded and arrived at the mosque, hundreds of the eggs will be distributed to people having filled the mosque yard.

Another tradition ahead of the distribution of eggs is the cutting of baby hair. Residents having babies and will cut their hair, this is a very appropriate moment. A few residents cut off the hair of their

children while being carried.

Chief of East Loloan hamlet, Mustahidin, stated that in addition to the male parade and baby haircut, a yellow rice sow process is mixed with coins. This procession is known as Ambur Salim.

A government move to introduce greater flexibility to the country’s maximum 52-hour work week -- to adjust to fluctuations in demand -- has particularly angered workers.

They are also calling for liberal president Moon Jae-in’s government to deliver on election promises to raise the minimum wage from 7,530 won (US$6.66) to 10,000 won (US$8.85) by 2020.

Earlier this month, Moon sacked his top two economic officials, as the world’s 11th-largest economy struggles with slowing growth, rising unemployment and persistent income gaps.

Ghosn custody extended as crisis deepens at Nissan

TOKYO - Japanese authorities Wednesday extended Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn’s detention by 10 days, as it emerged the car giant itself could face charges over the alleged financial misconduct that laid low its once-loved leader.

Monday’s stunning arrest of the millionaire auto tycoon, who is credited with turning around the Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi Motors alliance, sent shockwaves through the global car sector, corporate Japan and beyond.

On Wednesday, several media reported that the Tokyo district court had ordered the 64-year-old Brazil-born businessman held for a further 10 days as prosecutors step up their investigation over the alleged underreporting of Ghosn’s package by about five billion yen ($44.5 million).

Prosecutors had 48 hours after his arrest to either press formal charges, release him or request this 10-day custody extension to continue the probe.

The titan of the car industry is being held in a detention centre in northern Tokyo in conditions far removed from his flashy lifestyle. “In principle, he will be all alone in a cell,” lawyer Ayano Kanezuka told AFP. “There is everything you need, heating, a bed but conditions are spartan,” said Kanezuka’s colleague Lionel Vincent, who also said there would be an inner courtyard with bars.

The crisis appeared to be going from bad to worse for Nissan, as the Asahi Shimbun reported that prosecutors believe the firm also had a case to answer. Both Nissan and

the authorities declined to comment.

- ‘Too much authority’ Nissan’s board will decide Thursday whether to remove him as chairman, a staggering reversal of fortune for the oncerevered manager who created the three-way alliance which together sells more cars worldwide than any other automaker.

Ghosn’s fate appears all but sealed after his hand-picked replacement as CEO, Hiroto Saikawa, launched an astonishing broadside at his mentor, saying “too much authority” had been placed in his hands and lamenting the “dark side of the Ghosn era.”

Saikawa pointedly refused to offer the deep “apology bow” that usually accompanies corporate scandals in Japan and played down the role Ghosn had personally played in reviving the firm’s fortunes.

However, in France, Renault said it was sticking with the fallen manager as chief executive although it named chief operating officer Thierry Bollore as deputy CEO, handing him the “same powers” as the “temporarily incapacitated” Ghosn.

After an emergency board meeting, Renault urged its sister company Nissan to share “evidence seemingly gathered” against Ghosn from a months-long internal investigation, saying it was unable to comment on the charges without this information.

Paris and Tokyo have been scrambling to contain the fall-out from the arrest, with the finance ministers of both countries declaring strong support for “one of the greatest symbols of Franco-Japanese industrial

cooperation.”

The scandal -- the latest in a string to affect Japan Inc. -- wiped millions off the stock value of all three companies but Nissan bounced back marginally in opening Tokyo trade, climbing nearly half a percentage point

in a falling market.

Marijuana addiction: When use becomes abuse

AS marijuana legalization builds momentum across the United States — with Michigan becoming the latest state to allow recreational use by adults — researchers are warning that more studies are needed on the long-term effects of chronic pot smoking on the human brain.

Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States, but little is known about its effect on health or how addictive it is.

According to a 2017 poll conducted by Marist College and Yahoo News, more than half of American adults have tried marijuana at least once in their lives, and nearly 55 million of them, or 22 percent, say they use it currently. Close to 35 million are what the survey calls “regular users,” people who say they use marijuana at least once or twice a month.

“Surprisingly, many people freely admit to using marijuana, but underreporting remains an issue,” said Jonathan Caulkins, a drug policy researcher and professor at Carnegie Mellon University. “To correct for that one should fudge upwards by a factor of 20 to 40 percent.”

With Michigan’s Election Day ballot measure, 10 states and the District of Columbia now allow the drug’s open use; 33 states plus D.C. allow medical use, leaving many to wonder if the U.S. will follow Canada’s lead in legalizing marijuana nationwide.

CONSEQUENCES OF CHRONIC MARIJUANA USE

Nathaniel Warner, 31, a data analyst at the Mayo Clinic in Roch-

ester, Minnesota, first tried marijuana when he was 19, during his freshman year of college. Warner was having a hard time adjusting to campus life at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.

“It was a tough transition for me and I was dealing with social anxiety,” Warner told NBC News.

At first he just smoked on school breaks, three or four times during the school year. “But before I knew it, it was summer and I was smoking daily,” he said. “It just gave me a feeling I had never experienced before.”

After four years of heavy use, Warner noticed that his short-term memory was starting to fray. He avoided talking to people, and festering feelings of anxiety and depression grew. He tried to mask them with weed, deepening his dependency. In 2010 Warner upended his life, breaking up with his girlfriend and seeking recovery.

“I was hopeless. I realized that this lifestyle of being miserable and getting high was never going to change. I didn’t want to go through a 30- to 40-year cycle of going to work and coming home and getting high. I didn’t see an escape from that. That kind of shook me,” Warner said.

Unfortunately, Warner’s story is not uncommon.

While alcohol is more dangerous in terms of acute overdose risk, and also in terms of promoting violence and chronic organ failure, “marijuana — at least as now used in the United States —

creates higher rates of behavioral problems, including dependence, among all its users,” said Caulkins.

IS MARIJUANA ADDICTIVE?

The research leans towards yes.

Studies have shown that chronic marijuana use affects the same brain structures that are involved with addiction.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse suggests that 30 percent of those who use marijuana may have some degree of “marijuana use disorder.”

Marijuana use disorders are often associated with dependence — in which a person feels withdrawal symptoms when not taking the drug. Frequent users report irritability, mood and sleep difficulties, decreased appetite, cravings, restlessness and physical discomfort that peak within the first week after quitting and last up to two weeks.

Marijuana dependence occurs when the brain adapts to large amounts of the drug, requiring more and more to create the desired euphoric effect.

Marijuana use disorder becomes addiction when the smoker cannot stop using the drug even though it interferes with many aspects of his or her life. Estimates of the number of people addicted to marijuana are controversial, in part because studies of substance use often use dependence as a measure of addiction even though it is possible to be dependent without being addicted.

In Warner’s case, he developed

both a dependence and an addiction. The first time he seriously decided to quit he gave his stash to his girlfriend to keep it away from him. Later that day, he came home and sweet-talked her into giving it back.

“Even though I was serious at the time about getting clean, I relapsed,” he said. “The thing about addiction is that you can wake up and be 100 percent convinced that you won’t use again. You could take a lie detector test and you’d pass with flying colors, but 12 hours later a trigger may cause you to change your mind and you might get high again.”

Researchers estimate that 4 million people in the United States met the criteria for marijuana use disorder in 2015, but only 138,000 of them voluntarily sought treatment.

HOW BAD IS CHRONIC MARIJUANA USE?

Most experts agree that more research needs to be done to accurately answer this question. First, there is no universal definition of what constitutes “chronic” use.

substantial increase in “psychoticlike experiences” in teenage users.

The study also reported adverse effects on cognitive development and increased symptoms of depression.

Other studies show that chronic use may even interfere with normal development of the adolescent brain.

Patricia Conrad, professor of psychiatry at the University of Montreal, believes that more research needs to be done to see the effects of chronic marijuana use on the brain.

“Potency has increased over time,” said Conrad. “More sophisticated technology is being used to extract CBD oil from the product, resulting in more and more products with potent levels,” said Conrad.

One study that received a tremendous amount of publicity looked at 38,600 samples of cannabis confiscated from 1995 to 2014.

Analysis of these samples found that the average amount of THC, the psychoactive portion of the drug, rose from 4 percent in 1995 to over 12 percent in 2014. During that same time, cannabidiol, the non-psychoactive component of marijuana, fell from 0.28 percent to 0.15 percent. This shift in the ratio of THC to CBD has a pronounced effect on the drug’s perceived potency.

The average potency of the flower product sold in Washington’s state-licensed markets is over 20 percent, and the average potency of extract-based products — like oils for vaping pens, dabs and the like — is in the neighborhood of 70 percent, said Caulkins. He believes more research needs to be done to see how this difference in potency affects the body, compared with the weaker product studied in the past.

As more is learned about the the effects of marijuana on the brain and body, experts hope to figure out if marijuana is a drug that can be managed like alcohol or if it is a highly addictive drug that needs to be highly regulated, like tobacco.

Warner has been sober since Oct. 17, 2010. He thanks his parents, the Mayo Clinic intensive addiction program and his 12-step recovery group for helping him to get back on track.

“Addiction is real. It’s a slow downhill kind of thing … it takes some years to get to that low point, and years to slowly build yourself back up,” said Warner.

“Recovery isn’t easy, even for a guy like me who had resources, a support system, and no really bad consequences, like losing my job or going to jail.” (IBP/net)

Every day, the average volume of garbage collected at Bengkala landfill varies between 400 and 450 cubic meters. Of that volume, 4.8 hectares of landfill are predicted to only last less than the next four years.

Head of the DLH Buleleng, Putu Ariyadi Pribadi, last weekend admitted the condition of the landfill is under the threat of overloading.

For this reason, according to the evaluation results by the Team for

the Acceleration of Settlement and Sanitation Development Program (PPSP), the district government is reminded to reduce landfill waste. This effort is only possible if the selection of garbage is done massively. “If the waste entering the landfill is only processed into compost, then the landfill capacity will be able to operate longer. To that end, we have been instructed to promote the organic and nonorganic waste sorting,” he said.

DLH also continuously pushes this program, so that around 50 percent of the waste coming into TPA is in the form of residues and the rest is processed in the TPS3R and Waste Banks. Ariadi hoped that central government will provide financial assistance for the development of the Bengkala Landfill related to the processing of waste and wastewater from the sludge water treatment plant (IPLT).

“This landfill will last longer and in the future we will propose more assistance for the development of landfill as well as the waste and wastewater management,” he explained. (kmb38)

Object management keeps on organizing Pondok Edelweiss

AMLAPURA - Pondok Edelweiss of Edelweiss Hut tourist object located at Temukus hamlet, Besakih, Rendang has been known by the community. After being opened a year ago, the attractions offering natural beauty began to be visited. Other than Karangasem residents, a number of other residents from outside the region also know the tourist attraction. In order to increase the number of visits, the management continues to arrange the object in order to look more beautiful and attractive.

Research and Development Division Officer of the Pondok Edelweiss Tourist Object, I Nengah Sueca, stated on Sunday (Nov. 18) that since the opening of the Edelweiss Hut tourist object a year ago, indeed visitors coming are quite crowded every day. He said the average visitor reaches around 100 people. Visitors do not only from Karangasem, but also from outside the area came to enjoy the natural beauty offered to the visitors that come. “Visitors are usually crowded on holidays.

Religious holidays like Galungan and Kuningan are also crowded of visitors,” he said.

Sueca added the objects offered are the beauty of natural panorama of Mount Agung, hills, edelweiss and marigold garden. Besides, it also offers edelweiss flowers as well as the stretch of edelweiss,

edelweiss stage, edelweiss propellers, and edelweiss huts. There is also a jargon of White Valley Eternity namely the attraction for millennial generation. “We are still continuing to arrange tourist objects to increase the number of visits. Right now, we are even adding selfie spots including the development of the main plantation area and structuring the culinary area,” he said.

He further said that in the future the management team will collaborate with some tourism strengthening. As has been done, it makes collaboration with Generation of Wonderful Indonesia (GenPi) Bali related to the promotion of the tourist areas. And this November, there will also be an Edelweiss Market having been designed with GenPi Bali. The activity is expected to attract visitors. In addition, it will also always develop tourism objects that are based on local wisdom so that they have a different attraction from the others.

“For promotion, we have done it by engaging in direct exhibitions, promotions through social networking and promotion through collaboration with local government and tourism. It also includes digital and direct promotions as well as participation in tourism-related exhibitions. The main objective is to improve excellent services for visitors,” said Sueca. (kmb41)

Diddy breaks silence over ex Kim Porter’s sudden death LOS ANGELES - Hip hop star Sean “Diddy” Combs has broken his silence three days after the death of his former partner Kim Porter, with whom he had three children.

Ms Porter, 47, was Mr Combs’s partner for 13 years.

Indonesia set to free Bali Nine drug smuggler Lawrence

The first member of the “Bali Nine” heroin-trafficking gang to be released from prison is expected to leave jail on Wednesday after serving 13 years, in a case that caused a huge diplomatic rift between Indonesia and Australia.

Renae Lawrence, 41, the only female member of the group, was arrested in 2005 when authorities caught her with 2.6 kilogrammes (5.7 pounds) of heroin strapped to her body as she tried to fly out of the international airport on the holiday island of Bali.

She was initially handed a life term, but her sentence was later reduced to 20 years and then further cut due to good behaviour. It was not immediately clear what time she would be released from Bali’s Bangli prison, but officials said she may be freed around midday (0400 GMT).

“Renae Lawrence is in a healthy condition. She seems to be happy, but also a bit nervous,” head of Bangli prison Made Suwendra told AFP. It is likely that Lawrence will be deported shortly after her release.

The Australian Police Commissioner for the state of New South Wales, Mick Fuller, told The Australian newspaper there were two outstanding arrest warrants for Lawrence and that they will speak to her when she returns to the country.

Reports in Australian media said Lawrence could face arrest once she is back home over a high-speed chase involving a stolen vehicle dating back to just before she was arrested in Indonesia.

Of the nine in the original group, ringleaders Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan were executed by firing squad in 2015, sparking a diplomatic row between Australia and Indonesia, which has some of the world’s strictest drug laws including the death penalty.

Another member, Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen, died in prison in June from stomach cancer, while the remaining five are currently serving life sentences. Some critics have lashed out at the Australian police for tipping off their Indonesian counterparts about the gang and putting its members at risk of execution in Indonesia.

High-profile cases like that of Australian Schapelle Corby, who spent more than nine years behind bars for smuggling marijuana into Bali, have stoked concern that Indonesia is becoming a destination for trafficked drugs.
