Beyonce is 2017’s highest-paid woman in music with $105 million
LOS ANGELES - Beyonce’s hit album “Lemonade” and world tour made her the highest-paid woman in music in 2017, according to an annual Forbes list on Monday, edging out Britain’s Adele and pop star Taylor Swift. The R&B singer earned some $105 million from record sales and from her “Formation” concert tour, according to Forbes. She also has her own Ivy Park fashion line and other business interests. Adele, whose “25” album broke first-week U.S. sales records in 2015 and who completed her first major tour since 2011, made second place with an estimated $69
million, despite having no major endorsements for other products. Swift, who topped the last year’s list with $170 million in estimated earnings, raked in $44 million this time despite having finished her “1989” world tour. The singer is expected to see her earnings rise significantly in the next 12 months courtesy of her new album “Reputation” - the best-selling album of
2017 - and an upcoming tour. Canadian superstar Celine Dion took the No.4 spot, earning some $42 million after taking a break from her Las Vegas residency following the death of her husband Rene Angelil in January 2016. Forbes compiled the list after estimating pretax income for the 12 months from June 2016 to 2017, based on interviews with managers,

‘Justice League’ Opens With Gloomy $96 Million in North America

LOS ANGELES - Warner Bros.DC’s costly “Justice League” has dominated the North American box office but fallen well short of expectations with a $96 million opening weekend at 4,051 locations. It’s a decidedly gloomy result for the tentpole, which had been forecast by the studio just prior to the weekend to open in the $110 million range. Instead, “Justice League” is launching with only the eighth largest opening of 2017. It’s not even in the top 50
domestic openings of all time, ranking 53rd behind “Fast and Furious 6.” “For every macro budget superhero movie the stakes are incredibly high and with that comes an enormous pressure to exceed all expectations and for DC, this has never been more true,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with comScore. “In the wake of the much-needed home run that was ‘Wonder Woman,’ the momentum was with the brand and great expectations placed on
the very broad shoulders of ‘Justice League’ to keep that train moving.” Dergarabedian noted that the movie will gross $285 million worldwide this weekend and that initial reception among audiences is positive. The overall CinemaScore was B+ with males comprising 58% of the audience while females gave the movie an A-, as did moviegoers under 25. “With the rightfully heightened expectations for a movie of this magnitude comes a greater scrutiny of both the quality of the movie as determined by critics and of course the profitability of the film, but the ultimate arbiter are moviegoers who seem to have found the concept and the event nature of the film enough to get them out to the movie theater even if the overall North American opening weekend number may be less than many expected,” Dergarabedian said. Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. domestic distribution president, said there were several positive signs
such as a 28% hike in business from Friday to Saturday and the start of Thanksgiving vacations this week. “ T h e movie is on a path different from what we were hoping but we’re optimistic going into the Thanksgiving holiday,” he added. “There will be 35% of schoolchildren out of school on Monday and Tuesday and 75% out on Wednesday.” (rtr)

Besakih - Mount Agung volcano has begun erupting less than a month after its alert status was downgraded following a decrease in seismic activity. Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency called on the public to remain calm after the volcano began spewing a dark grey plume about 700 metres above the peak just after 5pm local time. Spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho tweeted that people should stay away from the six to 7.5 kilometre volcano exclusion zone specified by the Centre for Volcanology. Mr Sutopo said the Volcanology Centre was still analysing volcanic activities. The National Disaster Management Agency described the eruption as “phreatic”, which is a steam-driven explosion that occurs when water beneath the ground or on the surface is heated by molten rock, known as magma, lava, hot rocks or new volcanic
deposits. “At this point this is very, very small,” tweeted New Zealand volcanologist Dr Janine Krippner. “Right now this is not a serious eruption but of course this can change,” Dr Krippner said “Time to make sure you are prepared and keep an eye on official Agung information.” An Indonesian government press release said
a potential danger was heavy ash rain that could spread outside of the danger zone. “It is expected that all communities living around Mount Agung and on the island of Bali, immediately prepare a mask to cover the nose and mouth and eye protection as an effort to anticipate the potential danger volcanic ash,” it said in a statement.
A spokesman for Bali’s international airport said it was currently operating normally. “Visual observation via pilot report is ongoing,” said spokesman Arie Ahsan. “The wind is blowing to the east with tendency towards southeast.” Refugee Kadek Nadi, who lives in the exclusion zone about four kilometres from the summit, was told by Fairfax Media the volcano was erupting. He said he was currently at home in Pasar Agung but his family were at the refugee camp. “Dark smoke is now coming from the summit,” he said. “I am heading down (the
mountain) now.” In late October there were 134,500 evacuees living in 390 refugee camps in nine regencies throughout Bali. However after the threat alert was downgraded all but 29,000 have returned to their homes. (rtr) News can also be heard in “Bali Image” at Global Radio FM 96.5 from 9.30 until 10.00 am.
