LONDON - Marie Antoinette’s dazzling diamonds and pearls, unseen in public for two centuries, went on show in London on Friday before going on sale next month in one of the most important royal jewellery auctions in history.

The treasures were secretly whisked out of Paris in 1791 in the aftermath of the French Revolution and have been privately owned by relatives ever since.

The collection, held by the Italian royal House of Bourbon-Parma, is being sold by Sotheby’s auction house in Geneva on November 14.

On show at their London headquarters, the lots include 10 pieces which belonged to Marie Antoinette, the last queen of France before the French Revolution. She was guillotined in Paris aged 37 in October 1793.

“The romance, magic and universality of her name is because she represents that sophistication of l’ancien regime. She is it,” Andres White Correal, Sotheby’s senior director of jewellery, told AFP.

WASHINGTON - Actress Selma Blair revealed she has multiple sclerosis Saturday, in an emotional Instagram post offering insight into her life with the illness.

The “Legally Blonde” and “Cruel Intentions” star, 46, said she was diagnosed with the chronic central nervous system disease -- which causes symptoms including fatigue, pain and coordination problems -- in August after suffering symptoms “for years.”

“I am disabled. I fall sometimes. I drop things. My memory is foggy. And my left side is asking for directions from a broken gps. But we are doing it. And I laugh and I don’t know exactly what I will do precisely but I will do my best,” she wrote.

Blair, who is currently working on Netflix sci-fi drama “Another Life,” said she revealed her diagnosis to share her gratitude toward costume designer Alissa Swanson, who “carefully gets my legs in my pants, pulls my tops over my head, buttons my coats and offers her shoulder to steady myself.”

Blair also thanked celebrity friends including fellow “Cruel Intentions” star Sarah Michelle Gellar as well as Jaime King and other Hollywood friends for supporting her.

“I am in the thick of it but I hope to give some hope to others,” she said.

“I want to play with my son again. I want to walk down the street and ride my horse.

I have MS and I am ok. But if you see me, dropping crap all over the street, feel free to help me pick it up. It takes a whole day for me alone. “ (afp)

The highlight is Queen Marie Antoinette’s Pearl, a natural pearl and diamond pendant valued at $1-2 million (870,000-1.75 million euros).

A natural pearl and diamond necklace composed of three rows of more than 100 slightly graduated pearls is expected to fetch $200,000-300,000, as are a pair of natural pearl and diamond pendant earrings.

A monogrammed ring containing a lock of her hair is valued at $8,000-10,000.

“The ring is a small diamond ring with a lock of her hair inside, with the monogram MA set with rose diamonds,” Sotheby’s jewellery specialist Benoit Repellin told AFP. “The value of the diamonds themselves is very low but there is an emotional value and a historic value behind it.” (afp)

Five-star Marquez romps to MotoGP title as Dovizioso crashes

MOTEGI - Honda’s Marc Marquez stormed to a nail-biting victory in Japan Sunday to capture his third straight MotoGP world championship as Ducati rival Andrea Dovizioso crashed out.

The Spanish sensation has now won five championships in motorcycling’s premier class, putting him level with Australian legend Mick Doohan.

Marquez, still just 25, trails only the Italian pair of Valentino Rossi, who won the last of his seven championships in 2009, and Giacomo Agostini, whose record eighth came in 1975, in the alltime list.

“I feel really, really good,” whooped Marquez after Dovizioso’s late spill confirmed his eighth victory of the season.

“I already imagined that it will be (decided) here but the important thing is that when you have the first chance, you do it.

“It wasn’t the best circuit to do it but I worked hard all weekend,” added Marquez.

“I was able to follow Andrea and decided to attack before the last lap. I was pushing really hard, so he made a mistake -- I’m disappointed because he deserves to be on the podium with us.”

Marquez started from sixth on the grid at Motegi but quickly knifed through the field and was third by the end of the first lap.

He flirted with disaster on lap 14, however, after overtaking Dovizioso at turn nine before running wide at the next corner and spitting up dirt and dust as he battled to control a violent wobble.

lowed Dovizioso to retake the lead, but Marquez continued to swarm all over the Italian, finally slashing past him with a daredevil move on lap 21 of 24.

Dovizioso, who needed to complete a pole to flag victory to keep alive his fading championship hopes, crashed out on the penultimate lap in a desperate last push, ending this year’s title race.

“The big boss will enjoy this,” smiled Marquez after wrapping up the title at Honda’s home race, before rejoining the party at his team garage he revealed afterwards had left him nursing a sore shoulder.

Luckily with the adrenalin it doesn’t hurt, but I’ll need to be careful not to overdo it on the dancefloor tonight!”

Fellow Honda rider Cal Crutchlow finished runner-up after Dovizioso’s fall with Alex Rins (Suzuki) edging out Rossi (Yamaha) to round out the podium.

Marquez has now won seven world titles in total after also winning the 125cc championship in 2010 and the Moto2 crown in 2012.

“It’s something that will go into the history books,” he said.

“To have won seven at 25-yearsold is an indescribable feeling that fills me with great pride.”

Meanwhile, three-time world champion Jorge Lorenzo will miss next weekend’s Australian race after sitting out the Japanese round with injury.

Ducati said the Spaniard, who fractured his wrist at the previous race in Thailand, will aim to return at the penultimate weekend in Malaysia at the start of November.

Lorenzo paid tribute to Marquez, who he will join at Honda next year.

“Sometimes we don’t agree on the way to compete,” he tweeted.

“But I recognise talent and excellence and there’s no doubt about (his). Festival serves as a means of promotion and art regeneration

This was started with the Ulundanu Beratan Festival in June 2018. Featuring the theme of Danu Kertih, Uniting Diverse Indigenous Cultures of the Archipelago, the festival held for the fourth time involved 2,500 artists. It is much bigger than the previous year involving only 1,200 artists. Moreover, the event successfully combined the natural, cultural and religious tourism.

Furthermore, it was resumed with the Tanah Lot Art and Food Festival II in August 2018. In addition to introducing the coffee potential of Tabanan district and the BUMDes’

products through the MSME stand, this year’s Tanah Lot festival was also packed with the launch of the colossal Rejang Sandat Ratu Segara Dance involving 1,800 young female dancers that finally won the MURI award. In September, the festival was held at Jatiluwih with the theme of Matha Subak. Jatiluwih Attraction Management Agency also managed to pack traditional and modern arts very well.

Other than tourist objects, the festival is also functioned to show off the potential of the subdistrict. For instance, this year Kerambitan sub-dis-

trict has entered the fourth festival. For four days, many colossal arts had been displayed and danced by community components from fifteen villages in Kerambitan subdistrict. With the theme of Yowana Masikian-- Harmony in Blessing Land, Kerambitan subdistrict head, I Gede Sukanada, explained the theme raised the values and awareness of the sense of togetherness as a whole of the unified community. Hopefully, all the elements of society, especially younger generation (Yowana), can go hand in hand in building Kerambitan subdistrict with all the artistic and cul-

tural potential. As a result, it can grow into a quality tourist destination. “This awareness of stepping together will be the foundation of community interaction in Kerambitan to realize harmony in this blessed land,” he explained.

According to Sukanada, apart from aiming to encourage the cultural potential, it basically revives tourism in Kerambitan subdistrict having been the icon of Tabanan district for several decades with the okokan and tektekan art. “So, there is art regeneration in Kerambitan subdistrict,” he said.

The Kerambitan Festival V next year will feature the arts having almost been suspended like the Wayang Wong at Kelating village and Andir operetta at Tista. “We will search and make data collection on how to restore the glory of the distinctive arts of Kerambitan,” he concluded.

The festival having become a regular event was appreciated by the Acting Deputy of the Development of Foreign Tourism Marketing, Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia, Ni Wayan Giri Adnyani. When attending the Tanah Lot Festival, she said the event or festival had multiple benefits. According to her, reviving tourism through such events is the same as improving local people’s welfare because it involves the local community.

“Through festival, we can introduce local tourism and motivate communities to continuously be creative and innovate,” she explained. She also hoped the festivals and other events are consistently held annually because such events and festivals can bring in tourists to Bali, especially to Tabanan. (kmb28)

Environment Agency shortage of truck to transport garbage BANGLI - The Bangli Environment Agency (DLH) currently has 14 units of garbage truck. In fact, the number of fleets owned is still considered to inadequately serve the garbage transportation across the regions in Bangli.

Secretary of DLH Bangli, Ida Bagus Sobya, recently said that

of the 14 units of garbage trucks currently owned, two of them are old. Besides, the two trucks are also in damaged condition. Both DLH trucks, he said, were procured around 1980s.

Since the two trucks are damaged, the DLH currently can only take advantage of the 12 other

trucks to service garbage transportation. With such number of trucks, Sobya considered it inadequate. Ideally, to serve the entire district town area or subdistrict town, the DLH should have at least 18 trucks.

In Bali, public awareness of breast cancer remains low

What to see in Hiroshima and the Setouchi Region, Japan HIROSHIMA - The only place in Japan’s Setouchi region that will be familiar to most is Hiroshima, the city destroyed by the first atomic bomb in WW2. It’s a destination in its own right but makes a great base for exploring the Seto Inland Sea, containing more than 350 islands.

You’ll find Shinto shrines, archetypal Japanese landscapes and delicious food and drink including the deadly Fugo fish.

Hiroshima

Hiroshima is a five hour bullet train ride west of Tokyo and of course where the first atom bomb was dropped on 6th August 1945. It was almost completely flattened but since then it’s been entirely rebuilt. It’s an attractive vibrant city, but of course it’s hard to ignore its terrible history.

It’s dusk as I make my way down to the Motoyasu River to see the iconic Genbaku Dome, the shell of the Industrial Promotion Hall, preserved exactly as it was left after the blast.

This area was the commercial and political heart of the city, so it was an obvious target for the American bombers. The Dome was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 and it’s hard not to feel moved by the tragedy.

I walk over to the opposite bank which has been dedicated as Peace Memorial Park. The msuem details the history of Hiroshima, particularly

the dropping of the bomb and its aftermath. The main building deals with the events of August 6, through scientific explanation and there are rather grisly exhibits of items belonging to the victims. The east building tells the story of Hiroshima before and after the bombing and describes the city’s nuclear disarmament efforts.

The focal point of the Park is the Memorial Cenotaph, inscribed with over 220,000 names of those who lost their lives, with new names added every year. Nearby is the Peace Flame which will burn until all nuclear weapons are decommissioned. Every year there’s a memorial service on August 6th, when wreathes are laid at the Cenotaph. A moment’s silence is observed at 8:15 am, the precise moment of detonation, temple bells ring, sirens wail and white doves are released.

Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island

An hour’s ferry ride from Hiroshima is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Island of Itsuku-

shima, in the Seto inland sea, has been a holy place of Shintoism since the earliest times. The first shrine buildings here were probably erected in the 6th century. The present shrine dates from the 13th century and locals call the island Mijajima which means “Shrine Island”.

As I arrive, I pass the six pillars of the red entrance or Torii Gate, standing 16m tall and weighing 60 tons, rising from the sea. Surprisingly the pillars are not buried in the seabed but use their own weight to keep them standing. Historically, pilgrims had to steer their boats through the Torii before approaching the shrine.

My ferry is rather too large to pass through but there are boats for hire if you’re so minded.

The island itself was considered so sacred that, to preserve its purity, only monks were allowed to walk on its hallowed ground. The shrine was built on piles on the water, floating separate from the land, so pilgrims could pray.

The complex consists of multiple buildings, including a prayer hall, a main hall and a Noh Theatre stage, all connected by a series of boardwalks.

In spite of the crowds, it’s a serene place and the lack of doors and walls exaggerate the sense of space.

These days, pilgrims are allowed on the island. Most people climb the 500m Mount Misen, the highest point of the island, either on foot

or by a couple of cable cars. It’s too hot for me so I content myself with visiting the Shinto temple of Daishoin, built on a slope. It’s still a bit of climb and the steps are lined with rows of metal prayer wheels which you turn as you pass.

Kintai Bridge

Around 90 minutes by train from Hiroshima is the historic Kintai Bridge, spanning the Nishiki River in a series of wooden arches. It was built in 1673 to connect Iwakuni Castle, sitting on the top of Mt. Yokoyama, to Iwakuni town, after previous bridges had been washed away. It’s unique in the world and it’s thought that the idea came from China and nobody copied it because they didn’t understand the technology.

As I walk across I see the secret: the five arches sit on four stone piers as well as on two wooden piers rising from the dry riverbed where the bridge begins and ends. Regular maintenance was essential – every twenty years the

middle spans were replaced whilst the outer ones connecting to the banks were replaced every forty. What’s extraordinary is that no nails were used, rather the wooden parts were carefully fitted together and secured using metal bands.

For the first 195 years of its history, until the dismantling of the feudal system after the Meiji Restoration of 1868, only lords and their vassals were permitted to use the bridge. Unfortunately, in 1950 the bridge was washed away during Typhoon Kijia, but was rebuilt in 1953.

As I get to the over side, it’s like stepping back into old Japan, with the grounds of the ruler’s former residence now turned into Kikko Park. It includes museums, fountains, samurai houses, the Kikkawa family shrine and glass cases containing the mysterious sacred white snakes. They’re albino with red eyes and white scales, and grow to be 180 cm long and 15 cm in diameter. It was believed that they were messengers from Benten, the goddess of wealth.

MANGUPURA — All this time, the type of cancer with the highest mortality rate is breast cancer. Previously people with breast cancer were usually women over the age of 50 or after menopause. However, at this time people with breast cancer have led to a younger age namely in the range of 15-35 years.

According to the initiator of the Bali Pink Ribbon, 10 years ago Balinese people still had low awareness of breast cancer.

Initially the data obtained from hospitals indicated that 70 percent of cancer patients treated at hospital had reached the stage 3-4. “This makes total treatment efforts difficult to carry out. We never stop to educate through seminars from villages to villages,” said Geye.

Ten years after that, people gradually had the understanding on breast cancer. However, her agency did not have specific data about how much public awareness about the dangers of breast cancer. She admitted the government does not have a program to register all breast cancer sufferers.

“One of the missions we are doing now is to encourage the government to make data collection. From the statistics, about 200-300 Balinese people register themselves to hospital every

year,” he concluded.

She estimated the rate of breast cancer sufferers is much higher. Many people don’t know about the symptoms and how to check it. “That’s what we are educating through seminars.

In addition to fundraising, this event is also meant to raise public awareness about the dangers of breast cancer,” she said when met at the fundraising through the Pink Ribbon 5 km Fun Walk and Run on Peninsula Island, The Nusa Dua area, on Saturday (Oct. 20).

The fundraising event has been held for ten times since 2008 meaning to support breast cancer education programs for women in Bali. The participants involved in this activity volunteered to contribute to help save lives and provide educational and health support for patients with breast cancer in Bali. Other than running and fun walking activities, it was also held breast screening for participants, food trucks, market stalls, music, and memorial lines.

“Originally, we estimated this event will be followed by around 1,500 participants. Aside from the people of Bali, the participants are also cancer caring groups from overseas such as those from Australia,” she added. (kmb23)

MANGUPURA — Results of the research by the Center for Geotechnology Research (LIPI) regarding liquefaction are quite astonishing. The phenomenon happening when the soil is saturated or somewhat saturated loses the strength and stiffness due to tension or known as liquefaction has the potential to occur in the South Kuta region, such as Kedonganan and Tanjung Benoa.

The participants involved in this activity volunteered to contribute to help save lives and provide educational and health support for patients with breast cancer in Bali.

Responding to the results of the study, the Head of Public Works and Settlement Agency (PUPR) of Badung, I.B. Surya Suamba, stated that nothing can predict the will of nature. Developed countries cannot even predict the will of the Creator.

“Japan, whose technology is advanced, cannot predict it because it is the will of nature, the will of God. So, what can be done if there is an earthquake is to activate the early warning system (EWS) so when an earthquake occurs people will be able to quickly save themselves, because there is no technology that can predict it,” said I.B. Surya Suamba, on Wednesday (Oct. 17).

According to him, the government can only carry out post-disaster recovery when infrastructure damage occurs. “When a disaster occurs, it must work (EWS-ed), so that people can run away. If disaster occurs, causing house to collapse or

crack to the roads, we will repair them because there has been no study or the expert addressing such a research,” he explained.

As reported, the search of Bali Post for research regarding the liquefaction in Bali found the results of researchers at the Center for Geotechnology Research (LIPI), Eko Wibowo, examining the potential for detection in the South Bali region.

Selection of the region as the object of his research is considering the massive development in the region for the needs of accommodation facilities to support tourism.

Results of his research indicate

that Serangan-Tuban area has a very soft to soft clay layer; high plasticity and low shear strength.

This can cause the land in the area susceptible to collapse.

Meanwhile, the KedongananTanjung Benoa-Serangan area has a very loose and silt-sand layer.

With this geological condition, the region has a vulnerability to liquefaction triggered by earthquakes.

Similar research was also conducted by Rahmat Nawi Siregar, a graduate student of Physics Science at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Gadjah Mada University, using the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Geoelectric methods in Sanur-SeranganTanjung Benoa and Tuban. His results indicate the sand clay material has a percentage of fines less than 20 percent and is categorized into the area having a high potential for liquefaction. (kmb27)

Large and modern rice milling to be built to support farming sector DENPASAR - Downstream sector in Bali’s farming remains weak. On that account, the regional government of Bali is currently concerned about building the farming in the downstream sector. One of them is by inviting farmers to sell rice, not grain. In addition, in Tabanan will be established a large and modern rice milling to absorb farmers’ grain.

Head of the Bali Food Crops, Horticulture and Plantations Agency, I.B. Wisnuardhana, said that farming sector in Bali has the weakness in the downstream. One of the efforts in a series of realizing the rice self-sufficiency as one of the missions of the Sat Kerti Nangun Kerti Loka Bali is to provide food for Balinese people focused on rice.

Weakness in the downstream sector happens because the availability of grain or rice is seasonal.

So, there is a decrease in prices during the harvest. If the harvest in Bali occurs in February to March with an average grain production of 850,000 tons, Bali has insufficient capacity to carry out the milling. So, there is a small portion purchased by large milling in East Java to be processed there.

Actually Bali has quite a lot of rice mills, approximately 648 rice milling units (RMU). Of this number, 63 percent are small rice mills with the capacity of less than 1 ton per hour. Besides, these small rice mills are originating from the Dutch heritage with a small capacity and high yield because the equipment is old-fashioned. About 32 percent is classified into medium rice mill with the capacity of 2 tons per hour. Meanwhile, the large and modern rice mills only amounts to 31 units or 4.78 percent.

“Actually, what needed today to mill the grain into rice is largesized milling unit so that the losses are low while the quality of rice is

good. We only have 31 units of this category or 4.78 percent of all the milling units in Bali. This is our problem,” said Wisnuardhana on Friday (Oct. 19) at his office.

Only a few of the rice milling units in Bali have a dryer. On that account, if the harvest occurs during rainy season, it will be quite difficult to dry out the grain. With this condition, he has a rice mill revitalization program. In other words, the government will assist in stages with the equipment to complete the existing rice mills. For example, the aids will be in the form of dryer, husker and polisher.

However, the assistance is not enough to overcome the downstream sector. There is still a need to develop the downstream sector in the field of rice farming. On that account, he collaborated with a local investor, PT Lumbung Jati Luwih.

“PT Lumbung Jati Luwih makes cooperation with a large Japanese rice milling company, Satake. It plans to build a large and modern rice mill in Tabanan,” he said.

The land to be used is that of the Seed Center at Timpag, Kerambitan, spreading across the area of 4 hectares. Two hectares will be cooperated with PT Lumbung Jati Luwih because this land is the asset of provincial government that must be leased. “Now, it remains to submit the licensing to build. “The permit will be issued by the district government of Tabanan, while the business license is issued by the Bali Licensing Office,” he added.

The milling to be built will have the capacity of more than 2 tons per hour because it is modern.

However, it needs to establish a partnership with the surrounding farmers. “Later, we will design the cooperation model. Now, there is no partnership scheme yet because of remaining to submit the permit.

ONE of the attractions in the Kerambitan Festival is the involvement of 15 villages that showcased their respective arts and cultures. The cultural shows managed to attract not only Kerambitan residents but also those from outside the region to watch.

Like the gong kebyar performance and creative dance were performed by representatives from eight villages in Kerambitan on Friday night (Oct. 19). Thousands of spectators looked orderly in front of the stage and patiently waited for the Gong Kebyar performance and the Creative Dance showed off by each village representative.

One of the visitors, Sayu Oktariani, 24, admitted to get information about the Kerambitan Festival from her friends. “I am from Negara but working in Tabanan. After getting information on the festival, I try to come here and in fact it’s good,” she said.

She also liked the cultural performances presented by each village. According to her, the audience is not inferior to those watching her favorite band concert. “It’s

like watching my favorite band.

However, it specifically performs Balinese culture originating from Kerambitan,” she added. Aside from cultural performances, Sayu said there are also many booths offering culinary delights as well as ceramic offered at affordable price and kebaya clothes. “Just now I looked around and bought ceramics. Their price is fairly affordable,” she added.

Similar comments were presented by Nyoman Windhu from Kelating village. According to him, the festival provides its own entertainment for those living at the village. “Usually I’ve been sleeping at eight. Unlike this time, I am still awake because there is entertainment,” he said.

very happy to see many people and they were orderly watching the art and cultural performances.

For cultural shows, the festival involved 15 villages in Tabanan.

“At the opening session on Thursday (Oct. 18), Kerambitan village hosted and got the turn to appear. On Friday (Oct. 19), a total of eight villages got the turn and on Saturday (Oct. 20) was the turn of six villages plus the appearance of Navicula’s band,” he said.

After the festival, the implementation will be evaluated which stand was the most desirable so that it can become an input for the implementation of next festival. “If the culinary booth was the mostly sought after, in the next festival the culinary booth will be multiplied,” explained Sukanada. Grain pain: Japan’s ageing rice farmers face uncertain future

SYDNEY - Meghan, the pregnant wife of Britain’s Prince Harry, is scaling back her engagements during the royal couple’s 16-day Pacific tour, Kensington Palace said Sunday, ahead of their visit to Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand.

The royal couple have had a gruelling schedule since arriving in Australia on Monday, visiting Sydney, Melbourne and the regional town of Dubbo, as well as opening the Olympic-style Invictus Games for disabled and wounded soldiers.

“After a busy programme, The Duke and Duchess have decided to cut back The Duchess’s schedule slightly for the next couple of days, ahead of the final week and a half of the tour,” Kensington Palace said in a statement.

The opening ceremony for the Games at Sydney’s Opera House on Saturday night was delayed after an intense thunderstorm, and the Duchess of Sussex did not attend a cycling medal presentation with Harry on Sunday.

At the event, held in The Domain gardens, the prince was asked by someone in a crowd of onlookers where his wife was.

“She’s resting at home,” the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported him as saying. “Being

pregnant takes its toll.”

Meghan rejoined her husband for lunch with Prime Minister Scott Morrison, before watching a Games sailing event from a boat on Sydney Harbour.

They are due to attend a private reception for the Invictus Games Foundation at Government House late Sunday before heading off to Fraser Island in Queensland state.

But Meghan is not expected to take part in official engagements at the World Heritage-listed site on Monday, with Kensington Palace adding that “The Duke will continue with the engagements on Fraser Island as planned”.

The pair are due to visit Fiji and Tonga after Fraser Island.

The news came as Harry received an unusual request from some members of the Australian cycling team at Sunday’s presentation -- if he could sign an Invictus pair of budgie smugglers.

“Budgie smugglers” is the colloquial term Australians use for Speedo-style swimwear.

The Duke of Sussex declined the offer. “He told us he’d love to sign them but he wasn’t allowed to,” athlete Damien Irish told the ABC Sunday.

KAZO - A crop once deemed so important it served as a form of currency, Japanese rice has fallen out of favour with younger, westernised consumers, in a shift that has left ageing farmers struggling for survival.

Rice consumption has nearly halved over the past 50 years, and as the older generation of farmers and consumers dies out, some fear the industry will be unable to hold its own in a competitive global market. Kazuo Ogura, a 66-yearold farmer, is one of the lucky ones.

His son Yuichi decided to follow him into the family business.

Ogura senior looks on proudly as his 38-year-old son uses a specially designed machine to plant this year’s harvest, splashing through golden paddy fields that stretch as far as the eye can see.

Surviving in this tough environment is all about “producing quality food at a reasonable price” and harnessing economies provided by large-scale production, Ogura told AFP. The future of his establishment in Kazo, some 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of Tokyo, looks assured as Yuichi follows in his muddy footsteps but farms all over Japan are dying as farmers age -- the average age of a rice farmer is now 67.

“I was the only one out of 220 students at my local school who went into farming,” Yuichi said.

“There are not many people in their twenties who go into farming.” Even existing farms have been forced to close when their machinery breaks down because farmers cannot afford to replace the costly equipment.

“Machines get more expensive every year. To replace them requires a certain level of profit but that’s difficult when you are farming a small plot,” Yuichi said.

The Oguras have managed to stay competitive so far by joining forces with two other families to farm around 100 hectares of rice fields -- nearly 100 times the size of the average plot.

They sell their rice -- which belongs to the leading Koshihikari variety -- at 300 yen ($2.66) per kilogram.

- ‘At a turning point’ Although rice consumption in Japan has been falling for more than half a century, the crop’s

exalted status in Japanese culture -- where it even serves a religious purpose in Shinto rituals -- has ensured its survival until now.

Generous subsidies aimed at controlling supplies and prices have made rice farming one of Japan’s most protected industries, but Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s government scrapped the policy this year, urging farmers to become more competitive.

Japanese agriculture is “at a turning point”, Ken Saito, who was farm minister until a reshuffle this month, told reporters.

“Farmers have to think about producing food that sells. More than ever, they have to be attuned to the market,” he added.

And as Abe prepares for potential trade negotiations with US President Donald Trump, analysts say he may have to concede some ground on agriculture -- which could include Japan’s customary high tariffs on imported rice -- in order to avoid getting whacked with US duties on automobiles and other key exports. Brexit uncertainty set to hobble UK economy through winter

LONDON — The uncertainty over Brexit that’s hobbling the British economy is set to go on for longer than expected, leaving companies and households in a limbo.

When Britain triggered the two-year timetable to leave the European Union, October’s summit of EU leaders was supposed to be the moment a Brexit deal would be agreed on to give parliaments the time to pass it into law ahead of March’s departure.

A deal at Wednesday’s summit would have lifted some of the pall that’s hung over the British economy since the Brexit vote of June 2016. Instead, British Prime Minister Theresa May wasn’t able to secure an agreement and EU leaders cancelled a Brexit summit in November. That suggests there won’t be any deal until December — at the earliest. Even if May does secure one, there is no certainty she can get it approved by her own, divided parliament.

The worry is Britain could crash out without a pact on future relations with the EU or without even a transition period to ease its exit — what has become known as a “hard Brexit.” Tariffs would be placed on exports, border checks would be reinstalled, and restrictions could hit travelers and workers. Some are warning of shortages in markets like medicines and even sperm donations.

“For the economy, this could see growth momentum slow again over the winter as uncertainty rises,” said James Smith, developed markets economist at ING. “With businesses becoming more vocal about the impact ‘no deal’ would have on

operations, households may begin to take a more cautious stance if they gradually become more wary about their job security.”

Consumers have become cautious, cutting down on spending as a fall in the pound after the Brexit vote pushed up prices for imports.

The housing market has cooled, particularly in parts of London.

And companies have become more hesitant to invest. From being the fastest-growing Group of Seven industrial economy prior to the Brexit vote, Britain is now one of the slowest.

According to the International Monetary Fund, U.K. growth this year is expected to be a muted 1.4 percent. After Wednesday’s summit, the risk is it could be even lower if firms become more cautious.

“Business’ patience was already threadbare and is nearing an end,” said Carolyn Fairbairn, directorgeneral of the Confederation of British Industry, a lobby group that represents mainly big firms.

British businesses are particularly open to foreign markets, investing heavily abroad, hiring foreigners and exporting to other markets, particularly the EU, the biggest destination for British goods.

Research published Thursday by the British Chambers of Commerce and DHL Express U.K. showed the extent to which Brexit is making life difficult for firms.

In a survey of 2,530 small and

medium-sized companies conducted in August, the BCC found that 49 percent of firms have Brexit “front of mind” when deciding whether to trade internationally and that highlights “the economic cost of the persistent lack of political clarity.” A similar number are also concerned about the pound’s volatility — the currency fell sharply after the Brexit vote and it has continued to swing sharply.

“Firms have been dealing with uncertainty over the future relationship with the EU since the referendum vote over two years ago,” said BCC director-general Adam Marshall. “This survey shows that, as we get closer to the crunch, the lack of precision is starting to have a material impact on their decisionmaking.”

If and when a deal is struck, the detail will have a big impact on business decisions.

Any deal that sees Britain remain closely aligned to the EU’s regulations may mean firms won’t be able to tap other markets around the world, as Britain could be bound by EU trade deals and regulations.

Some prominent Brexit proponents — including James Dyson, the founder of the eponymous vacuum cleaner, and Tim Martin, the chairman of pub chain Weatherspoon’s — say Britain should agree on only loose ties with the EU to have the freedom to make new trade deals.

KEEPING SCORE: Germany’s DAX lost 0.3 percent to 11,556 and France’s CAC-40 sank 0.8 percent to 5,078. London’s FTSE 100 was flat at 7,028 and Italy’s FTSE MIB dropped 1.3 percent to 18,831 amid concerns about a spat with the EU over the country’s budget.

and for the Standard & Poor’s 500 were both up 0.2 percent.

NGURAH Rai Stadium on Jalan Melati, Denpasar, was frenzied with cheers of students and teachers of the Gandhi Memorial International School (GMIS) of Bali on Friday (Oct. 19). At that time, the GMIS Bali conducted the annual Sport Day. Hundreds of students vivaciously followed the competition prepared by the committee, namely the 100 meters sprint, 100 meters skipping, 200 meters dash, 400 meters, 4 x 100 meters relay, 800 meters open and tug of war between teachers and 12th grade students.

Those with high sportsmanship gave enthusiasm to their colleagues taking part in the competition. Although the sun was remarkably hot, it did not reduce their enthusiasm to achieve victory.

Principal of the GMIS Bali, Jaba Biswas, said that his school management strongly believes that every child is unique that makes this world a beautiful place. “In other words, it becomes a beautiful place. To live happily in this world, we must be full of miracles, and the exploration of students’ talent has made us set a slogan for this year, namely ‘we are full of miracles,’” he said.

This year’s sport event, he said, is another support of the fact that the students vivaciously participate in the elimination round carried out on the previous day. They still have very high energy and enthusiasm.

“I am very happy to see our students running on the way. I’d like to express my profound gratitude to the family that always supports all our efforts,” said Jaba Biswas.

Teacher team and the staff of the GMIS Bali had also worked very diligently and thoroughly when making this activity run smoothly.

works,” he said.

One of the GMIS students, Anggis Devaki, stated that such activity can make and motivate Indonesian children to prefer sports and live a healthier life. Indonesia’s Jauhari Johan managed to become the third winner in the Olympic Distance Category category and Andy Wibowo as the second winner in the Sprint Distance category. In this year’s event, Herbalife Bali International Triathlon also gave a ‘Best Indonesia’ prize for the Olympic Distance Course category and the Sprint Distance Course category for both men and women. The prize winner of the ‘Best Indonesia’ category of men’s Olympic Distance Course was won by Jauhari Johan. While Eva Desiana was chosen as the winner of “Best Indonesia” woman.

For the category of Sprint Distance Course, ‘Best Indonesian’ men are won by Muhammad Ahlul Firman and for women, obtained by Inge Prasetyo.

Herbalife Nutrition Indonesia Senior Director & Country General Manager Andam Dewi said this year’s participants came from 29 countries totaling 2,250 people, up 39 percent over the previous year.

Mexico allows caravan women, children in, but thousands still stranded

CIUDAD HIDALGO - Mexican authorities allowed dozens of women and children from a US-bound Honduran migrant caravan to enter the country Saturday but thousands remain stranded on a border bridge between Guatemala and Mexico where riot police barred their progress.

Mexico’s ambassador to Guatemala Luis Manuel Lopez told AFP the women and children would be processed by immigration authorities and taken to a shelter in the city of Tapachula, 40 kilometers (25 miles) away.

Mexican authorities said around 900 other migrants -- tired of waiting on the bridge -- resorted to crossing the Suchiate River below on makeshift rafts and police did not intervene as they clambered up the muddy riverbank on the Mexican side.

Many of them had spent more than 24 hours on the packed bridge where heat and hunger was adding to a growing sense of despair. Efforts to retrieve them were ongoing, authorities said.

- ‘Politically motivated’ -

US President Donald Trump, speaking at a rally in Elko, Nevada, kept up his rhetoric against the migrants and suggested the caravan was politically motivated.

“The Democrats want caravans, they like the caravans. A lot of people say ‘I wonder who started that caravan?’” he said.

He thanked Mexico for blocking

the caravan’s progress. “Mexico has been so incredible. Thank you Mexico and the leaders of Mexico, thank you. And you know why, because now Mexico respects the leadership of the United States.”

Last week, Trump threatened to cut aid to the region, deploy the military and close the US-Mexican border if authorities did not stop them.

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez and his Guatemalan counterpart Jimmy Morales continued Trump’s theme after they met in Guatemala to discuss the crisis Saturday.

“This migration has political motivations,” said Morales, “which is violating the borders and the good faith of the states and of course putting at risk the most important thing, people.”

Hernandez also deplored “the abuse of people’s needs” for “political reasons.”

“Without a doubt, we have a lot to do so that our people can have opportunities in their communities,” he said.

The caravan originated in the Honduran town of San Pedro Sula a week ago, with about 2,000

would-be migrants drawn together by social media.

It is notably different from the “Migrant Viacrucis” organized in April every year by NGOs to draw attention to the plight of Central American migrants.

Israel reopens people, goods crossings to Gaza after lull JERUSALEM - Israel ordered the country’s goods and people border crossings with Gaza to be opened on Sunday, just four days after shuttering them following a Palestinian rocket attack that sparked retaliatory strikes.

The move followed efforts to prevent an escalation in ongoing violence that has raised fears of a new war between Israel and the Palestinian territory’s Islamist rulers Hamas.

“The decision comes after a decrease in the violent events in Gaza over the weekend and efforts Hamas made to restrain” demonstrators, a statement from Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman’s office read.

On Wednesday, Lieberman had ordered the closure of the Kerem Shalom goods crossing and the Erez crossing for people, after a rocket from the Palestinian territory hit a home in southern Israel, prompting the Jewish state to strike 20 Hamas targets in Gaza.

Hamas disavowed the launch and said it was investigating the incident, as alarm over a potential broader conflict rose.

Near daily protests along the Gaza border since March 30 against Israel’s crippling 11-year blockade of the impoverished enclave have sparked repeated clashes with the army.

More than 200 Palestinians and one Israeli have been killed in the violence.

On Friday, thousands again gathered for protests in northern Gaza, but demonstrators largely remained at least 100 metres

(yards) from the border.

An Israeli army spokesman told AFP that while most of the protesters stayed back from the fence, some came close and threw explosive devices and hand grenades at troops, while burning tyres.

At least 130 Palestinians were injured by live fire in clashes with Israeli soldiers, the Gaza health ministry said.

Hamas officials were seen discouraging protesters from nearing the fence.

Israel had on Wednesday also suspended the delivery of fuel for the Palestinian territory’s power plant that had been trucked daily into Gaza under a deal brokered by the United Nations.

“The decision on the renewal of the fuel from Qatar has been put off as for the time being, and will be examined in a number of days based on the events,” the Sunday statement from Lieberman said.

An Egyptian security delegation that visited the Gaza Strip on Thursday had encouraged Hamas leader Ismail Haniya to calm the protests, according to an Egyptian official.

On Friday, United Nations envoy Nickolay Mladenov also urged all sides “to exercise restraint, to proceed in a peaceful manner, and to avoid escalation”.

Hamas has fought three wars with Israel since 2008 and fears of a fourth have spurred efforts

“Currently the population of Indonesia has reached 265 million. In 2030 it is estimated to reach nearly 300 million people.

The Indonesian per capita fish consumption will also rise from 43 kilogram (kg) in 2017 to 50 kg in 2019,” said Director General of Aquaculture Fisheries of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Slamet Soebjakto, in a written statement received

by Jakarta on Sunday.

According to Slamet Soebjakto, the consequence of the increasing population will also boost the need for food, including fish. He argued that this happened partly because the appetite of the population in various parts of the world has also shifted.

“They now like more protein sources from white meat such as fish than from red meat along with the demand for a healthier lifestyle,” he said.

He further explained that fish supply needs could no longer

KKP to strengthen cooperation with SKK Migas

JAKARTA - The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry (KKP) and the Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK Migas) have strengthened cooperation in the management of the country`s sea resources.

“The sea holds abundant natural resources. The country coast lines are among the longest in the world and our sea territory is among the richest worldwide.

Therefore, the assets have to be protected as a strategic sector,” Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said here on Saturday.

For that purpose, KKP and SKK Migas have teamed up to develop the country`s energy security through security synergy of the national strategic industry, Susi said.

KKP and SKK Migas also coordinate in drafting the zones of coastal areas and small isles (RZWP3K), to maintain positive synergy in activities in the two sectors. Oil and gas explorations have shifted more offshore in the country.

Minister Susi and head of SKK Migas Amien Sunaryadi already signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Yogyakarta on Thursday to provide reference for the cooperation.

The MoU covers joint study of technical aspect in the use of offshore production facilities by SKK Migas.

Susi said she hoped the cooperation between KKP and SKK Migas would continue to grow as the two institutions are closely interrelated. (ant)

Alexander Kokorin of Zenit St. Petersburg and Pavel Mamayev of FC Krasnodar were charged Thursday following fights at a hotel and at a coffee shop. Three

people were injured in the incidents.

Both footballers had been detained on Oct. 11 pending investigation. They could face imprisonment of up to five years if convicted.

Kokorin has played 48 times for Russia, while Mamayev made 15 international appearances from 2010-16. (ap)

Barca victory tarnished as injured Messi set to miss three weeks

Lionel Messi is expected to be out for three weeks with a fractured right arm but his last contribution was to help send Barcelona back to the top of La Liga on Saturday. Messi scored and then went off injured as Barca beat Sevilla 4-2 at Camp Nou, in a six-goal thriller that never looked like ending in anything other than a home win.

Mexico allows caravan women, children in, but thousands still stranded

Need for fish continues to increase: Ministry

CIUDAD HIDALGO - Mexican authorities allowed dozens of women and children from a US-bound Honduran migrant caravan to enter the country Saturday but thousands remain stranded on a border bridge between Guatemala and Mexico where riot police barred their progress.

Mexico’s ambassador to Guatemala Luis Manuel Lopez told AFP the women and children would be processed by immigration authorities and taken to a shelter in the city of Tapachula, 40 kilometers (25 miles) away.

Mexican authorities said around 900 other migrants -- tired of waiting on the bridge -- resorted to crossing the Suchiate River below on makeshift rafts and police did not intervene as they clambered up the muddy riverbank on the Mexican side.

Many of them had spent more than 24 hours on the packed bridge where heat and hunger was adding to a growing sense of despair. Efforts to retrieve them were ongoing, authorities said.

- ‘Politically motivated’ -

US President Donald Trump, speaking at a rally in Elko, Nevada, kept up his rhetoric against the migrants and suggested the caravan was politically motivated.

“The Democrats want caravans, they like the caravans. A lot of people say ‘I wonder who started that caravan?’” he said.

He thanked Mexico for blocking

the caravan’s progress. “Mexico has been so incredible. Thank you Mexico and the leaders of Mexico, thank you. And you know why, because now Mexico respects the leadership of the United States.”

Last week, Trump threatened to cut aid to the region, deploy the military and close the US-Mexican border if authorities did not stop them.

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez and his Guatemalan counterpart Jimmy Morales continued Trump’s theme after they met in Guatemala to discuss the crisis Saturday.

“This migration has political motivations,” said Morales, “which is violating the borders and the good faith of the states and of course putting at risk the most important thing, people.”

Hernandez also deplored “the abuse of people’s needs” for “political reasons.”

“Without a doubt, we have a lot to do so that our people can have opportunities in their communities,” he said.

The caravan originated in the Honduran town of San Pedro Sula a week ago, with about 2,000

would-be migrants drawn together by social media.

It is notably different from the “Migrant Viacrucis” organized in April every year by NGOs to draw attention to the plight of Central American migrants.

- Women, children allowed in -

The women ran forward when immigration officers unchained a gate that had been pinning back migrants at the crossing.

“I’m happy, happy! At last!” shouted a relieved Gina Paola Montes, 21, as she ran onto Mexican territory.

The women and children had spent the night on the bridge where hundreds slept in the open, as well as in the main square of the Guatemalan border town of Tecun Uman.

Mexican authorities insisted those on the bridge would have to file asylum claims one at a time in order to enter the country.

Guatemala has organized a fleet of buses to take Hondurans back to their country.

More than 300 people have taken up a government offer of a bus ride home to their country, police said. (afp)

Israel reopens people, goods crossings to Gaza after lull JERUSALEM - Israel ordered the country’s goods and people border crossings with Gaza to be opened on Sunday, just four days after shuttering them following a Palestinian rocket attack that sparked retaliatory strikes.

The move followed efforts to prevent an escalation in ongoing violence that has raised fears of a new war between Israel and the Palestinian territory’s Islamist rulers Hamas.

“The decision comes after a decrease in the violent events in Gaza over the weekend and efforts Hamas made to restrain” demonstrators, a statement from Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman’s office read.

On Wednesday, Lieberman had ordered the closure of the Kerem Shalom goods crossing and the Erez crossing for people, after a rocket from the Palestinian territory hit a home in southern Israel, prompting the Jewish state to strike 20 Hamas targets in Gaza.

Hamas disavowed the launch and said it was investigating the incident, as alarm over a potential broader conflict rose.

Near daily protests along the Gaza border since March 30 against Israel’s crippling 11-year blockade of the impoverished enclave have sparked repeated clashes with the army.

More than 200 Palestinians and one Israeli have been killed in the violence.

On Friday, thousands again gathered for protests in northern Gaza, but demonstrators largely remained at least 100 metres

(yards) from the border.

An Israeli army spokesman told AFP that while most of the protesters stayed back from the fence, some came close and threw explosive devices and hand grenades at troops, while burning tyres.

At least 130 Palestinians were injured by live fire in clashes with Israeli soldiers, the Gaza health ministry said.

Hamas officials were seen discouraging protesters from nearing the fence.

Israel had on Wednesday also suspended the delivery of fuel for the Palestinian territory’s power plant that had been trucked daily into Gaza under a deal brokered by the United Nations.

“The decision on the renewal of the fuel from Qatar has been put off as for the time being, and will be examined in a number of days based on the events,” the Sunday statement from Lieberman said.

An Egyptian security delegation that visited the Gaza Strip on Thursday had encouraged Hamas leader Ismail Haniya to calm the protests, according to an Egyptian official.

On Friday, United Nations envoy Nickolay Mladenov also urged all sides “to exercise restraint, to proceed in a peaceful manner, and to avoid escalation”.

“Currently the population of Indonesia has reached 265 million. In 2030 it is estimated to reach nearly 300 million people.

The Indonesian per capita fish consumption will also rise from 43 kilogram (kg) in 2017 to 50 kg in 2019,” said Director General of Aquaculture Fisheries of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Slamet Soebjakto, in a written statement received

by Jakarta on Sunday.

According to Slamet Soebjakto, the consequence of the increasing population will also boost the need for food, including fish. He argued that this happened partly because the appetite of the population in various parts of the world has also shifted.

“They now like more protein sources from white meat such as fish than from red meat along with the demand for a healthier lifestyle,” he said.

He further explained that fish supply needs could no longer

rely on catches in the national waters. He on the other hand said that the reality this time is that the source of fish from the catch is limited, both from catches in the sea and other public waters.

As proclaimed, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries emphasized the importance of the community to consume fisheries commodities obtained from the clean and healthy sea and water areas.

KKP to strengthen cooperation with SKK Migas

JAKARTA - The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry (KKP) and the Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK Migas) have strengthened cooperation in the management of the country`s sea resources.

“The sea holds abundant natural resources. The country coast lines are among the longest in the world and our sea territory is among the richest worldwide.

Therefore, the assets have to be protected as a strategic sector,” Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said here on Saturday.

For that purpose, KKP and SKK Migas have teamed up to develop the country`s energy security through security synergy of the national strategic industry, Susi said.

KKP and SKK Migas also coordinate in drafting the zones of coastal areas and small isles (RZWP3K), to maintain positive synergy in activities in the two sectors. Oil and gas explorations have shifted more offshore in the country.

Minister Susi and head of SKK Migas Amien Sunaryadi already signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Yogyakarta on Thursday to provide reference for the cooperation.

The MoU covers joint study of technical aspect in the use of offshore production facilities by SKK Migas.

Susi said she hoped the cooperation between KKP and SKK Migas would continue to grow as the two institutions are closely interrelated. (ant)

Brexit uncertainty set to hobble UK economy through winter

LONDON — The uncertainty over Brexit that’s hobbling the British economy is set to go on for longer than expected, leaving companies and households in a limbo.

When Britain triggered the two-year timetable to leave the European Union, October’s summit of EU leaders was supposed to be the moment a Brexit deal would be agreed on to give parliaments the time to pass it into law ahead of March’s departure.

A deal at Wednesday’s summit would have lifted some of the pall that’s hung over the British economy since the Brexit vote of June 2016. Instead, British Prime Minister Theresa May wasn’t able to secure an agreement and EU leaders cancelled a Brexit summit in November. That suggests there won’t be any deal until December — at the earliest. Even if May does secure one, there is no certainty she can get it approved by her own, divided parliament.

The worry is Britain could crash out without a pact on future relations with the EU or without even a transition period to ease its exit — what has become known as a “hard Brexit.” Tariffs would be placed on exports, border checks would be reinstalled, and restrictions could hit travelers and workers. Some are warning of shortages in markets like medicines and even sperm donations.

“For the economy, this could see growth momentum slow again over the winter as uncertainty rises,” said James Smith, developed markets economist at ING. “With businesses becoming more vocal about the impact ‘no deal’ would have on

operations, households may begin to take a more cautious stance if they gradually become more wary about their job security.”

Consumers have become cautious, cutting down on spending as a fall in the pound after the Brexit vote pushed up prices for imports.

The housing market has cooled, particularly in parts of London.

And companies have become more hesitant to invest. From being the fastest-growing Group of Seven industrial economy prior to the Brexit vote, Britain is now one of the slowest.

According to the International Monetary Fund, U.K. growth this year is expected to be a muted 1.4 percent. After Wednesday’s summit, the risk is it could be even lower if firms become more cautious.

“Business’ patience was already threadbare and is nearing an end,” said Carolyn Fairbairn, directorgeneral of the Confederation of British Industry, a lobby group that represents mainly big firms.

British businesses are particularly open to foreign markets, investing heavily abroad, hiring foreigners and exporting to other markets, particularly the EU, the biggest destination for British goods.

Research published Thursday by the British Chambers of Commerce and DHL Express U.K. showed the extent to which Brexit is making life difficult for firms.

In a survey of 2,530 small and

medium-sized companies conducted in August, the BCC found that 49 percent of firms have Brexit “front of mind” when deciding whether to trade internationally and that highlights “the economic cost of the persistent lack of political clarity.” A similar number are also concerned about the pound’s volatility — the currency fell sharply after the Brexit vote and it has continued to swing sharply.

“Firms have been dealing with uncertainty over the future relationship with the EU since the referendum vote over two years ago,” said BCC director-general Adam Marshall. “This survey shows that, as we get closer to the crunch, the lack of precision is starting to have a material impact on their decisionmaking.”

If and when a deal is struck, the detail will have a big impact on business decisions.

Any deal that sees Britain remain closely aligned to the EU’s regulations may mean firms won’t be able to tap other markets around the world, as Britain could be bound by EU trade deals and regulations.

Some prominent Brexit proponents — including James Dyson, the founder of the eponymous vacuum cleaner, and Tim Martin, the chairman of pub chain Weatherspoon’s — say Britain should agree on only loose ties with the EU to have the freedom to make new trade deals.

NGURAH Rai Stadium on Jalan Melati, Denpasar, was frenzied with cheers of students and teachers of the Gandhi Memorial International School (GMIS) of Bali on Friday (Oct. 19). At that time, the GMIS Bali conducted the annual Sport Day. Hundreds of students vivaciously followed the competition prepared by the committee, namely the 100 meters sprint, 100 meters skipping, 200 meters dash, 400 meters, 4 x 100 meters relay, 800 meters open and tug of war between teachers and 12th grade students.

Those with high sportsmanship gave enthusiasm to their colleagues taking part in the competition. Although the sun was remarkably hot, it did not reduce their enthusiasm to achieve victory.

Principal of the GMIS Bali, Jaba Biswas, said that his school management strongly believes that every child is unique that makes this world a beautiful place. “In other words, it becomes a beautiful place. To live happily in this world, we must be full of miracles, and the exploration of students’ talent has made us set a slogan for this year, namely ‘we are full of miracles,’” he said.

This year’s sport event, he said, is another support of the fact that the students vivaciously participate in the elimination round carried out on the previous day. They still have very high energy and enthusiasm.

“I am very happy to see our students running on the way. I’d like to express my profound gratitude to the family that always supports all our efforts,” said Jaba Biswas.

Teacher team and the staff of the GMIS Bali had also worked very diligently and thoroughly when making this activity run smoothly.

Large and modern rice milling to be built to support farming sector DENPASAR - Downstream sector in Bali’s farming remains weak. On that account, the regional government of Bali is currently concerned about building the farming in the downstream sector. One of them is by inviting farmers to sell rice, not grain. In addition, in Tabanan will be established a large and modern rice milling to absorb farmers’ grain.

Head of the Bali Food Crops, Horticulture and Plantations Agency, I.B. Wisnuardhana, said that farming sector in Bali has the weakness in the downstream. One of the efforts in a series of realizing the rice self-sufficiency as one of the missions of the Sat Kerti Nangun Kerti Loka Bali is to provide food for Balinese people focused on rice.

Weakness in the downstream sector happens because the availability of grain or rice is seasonal.

So, there is a decrease in prices during the harvest. If the harvest in Bali occurs in February to March with an average grain production of 850,000 tons, Bali has insufficient capacity to carry out the milling. So, there is a small portion purchased by large milling in East Java to be processed there.

Actually Bali has quite a lot of rice mills, approximately 648 rice milling units (RMU). Of this number, 63 percent are small rice mills with the capacity of less than 1 ton per hour. Besides, these small rice mills are originating from the Dutch heritage with a small capacity and high yield because the equipment is old-fashioned. About 32 percent is classified into medium rice mill with the capacity of 2 tons per hour. Meanwhile, the large and modern rice mills only amounts to 31 units or 4.78 percent.

“Actually, what needed today to mill the grain into rice is largesized milling unit so that the losses are low while the quality of rice is

good. We only have 31 units of this category or 4.78 percent of all the milling units in Bali. This is our problem,” said Wisnuardhana on Friday (Oct. 19) at his office.

Only a few of the rice milling units in Bali have a dryer. On that account, if the harvest occurs during rainy season, it will be quite difficult to dry out the grain. With this condition, he has a rice mill revitalization program. In other words, the government will assist in stages with the equipment to complete the existing rice mills. For example, the aids will be in the form of dryer, husker and polisher.

However, the assistance is not enough to overcome the downstream sector. There is still a need to develop the downstream sector in the field of rice farming. On that account, he collaborated with a local investor, PT Lumbung Jati Luwih.

“PT Lumbung Jati Luwih makes cooperation with a large Japanese rice milling company, Satake. It plans to build a large and modern rice mill in Tabanan,” he said.

The land to be used is that of the Seed Center at Timpag, Kerambitan, spreading across the area of 4 hectares. Two hectares will be cooperated with PT Lumbung Jati Luwih because this land is the asset of provincial government that must be leased. “Now, it remains to submit the licensing to build. “The permit will be issued by the district government of Tabanan, while the business license is issued by the Bali Licensing Office,” he added.

The milling to be built will have the capacity of more than 2 tons per hour because it is modern.

However, it needs to establish a partnership with the surrounding farmers. “Later, we will design the cooperation model. Now, there is no partnership scheme yet because of remaining to submit the permit.

Like the gong kebyar performance and creative dance were performed by representatives from eight villages in Kerambitan on Friday night (Oct. 19). Thousands of spectators looked orderly in front of the stage and patiently waited for the Gong Kebyar performance and the Creative Dance showed off by each village representative.

One of the visitors, Sayu Oktariani, 24, admitted to get information about the Kerambitan Festival from her friends. “I am from Negara but working in Tabanan. After getting information on the festival, I try to come here and in fact it’s good,” she said.

She also liked the cultural performances presented by each village. According to her, the audience is not inferior to those watching her favorite band concert. “It’s

like watching my favorite band.

However, it specifically performs Balinese culture originating from Kerambitan,” she added. Grain pain: Japan’s ageing rice farmers face uncertain future

SYDNEY - Meghan, the pregnant wife of Britain’s Prince Harry, is scaling back her engagements during the royal couple’s 16-day Pacific tour, Kensington Palace said Sunday, ahead of their visit to Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand.

The royal couple have had a gruelling schedule since arriving in Australia on Monday, visiting Sydney, Melbourne and the regional town of Dubbo, as well as opening the Olympic-style Invictus Games for disabled and wounded soldiers.

“After a busy programme, The Duke and Duchess have decided to cut back The Duchess’s schedule slightly for the next couple of days, ahead of the final week and a half of the tour,” Kensington Palace said in a statement.

The opening ceremony for the Games at Sydney’s Opera House on Saturday night was delayed after an intense thunderstorm, and the Duchess of Sussex did not attend a cycling medal presentation with Harry on Sunday.

At the event, held in The Domain gardens, the prince was asked by someone in a crowd of onlookers where his wife was.

“She’s resting at home,” the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported him as saying. “Being

pregnant takes its toll.”

Meghan rejoined her husband for lunch with Prime Minister Scott Morrison, before watching a Games sailing event from a boat on Sydney Harbour.

They are due to attend a private reception for the Invictus Games Foundation at Government House late Sunday before heading off to Fraser Island in Queensland state.

But Meghan is not expected to take part in official engagements at the World Heritage-listed site on Monday, with Kensington Palace adding that “The Duke will continue with the engagements on Fraser Island as planned”.

The pair are due to visit Fiji and Tonga after Fraser Island.

KAZO - A crop once deemed so important it served as a form of currency, Japanese rice has fallen out of favour with younger, westernised consumers, in a shift that has left ageing farmers struggling for survival.

Rice consumption has nearly halved over the past 50 years, and as the older generation of farmers and consumers dies out, some fear the industry will be unable to hold its own in a competitive global market. Kazuo Ogura, a 66-yearold farmer, is one of the lucky ones.

His son Yuichi decided to follow him into the family business.

Ogura senior looks on proudly as his 38-year-old son uses a specially designed machine to plant this year’s harvest, splashing through golden paddy fields that stretch as far as the eye can see.

Surviving in this tough environment is all about “producing quality food at a reasonable price” and harnessing economies provided by large-scale production, Ogura told AFP. The future of his establishment in Kazo, some 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of Tokyo, looks assured as Yuichi follows in his muddy footsteps but farms all over Japan are dying as farmers age -- the average age of a rice farmer is now 67.

“I was the only one out of 220 students at my local school who went into farming,” Yuichi said.

“There are not many people in their twenties who go into farming.” Even existing farms have been forced to close when their machinery breaks down because farmers cannot afford to replace the costly equipment.

“Machines get more expensive every year. To replace them requires a certain level of profit but that’s difficult when you are farming a small plot,” Yuichi said.

The Oguras have managed to stay competitive so far by joining forces with two other families to farm around 100 hectares of rice fields -- nearly 100 times the size of the average plot.

They sell their rice -- which belongs to the leading Koshihikari variety -- at 300 yen ($2.66) per kilogram.

- ‘At a turning point’ Although rice consumption in Japan has been falling for more than half a century, the crop’s

exalted status in Japanese culture -- where it even serves a religious purpose in Shinto rituals -- has ensured its survival until now.

Generous subsidies aimed at controlling supplies and prices have made rice farming one of Japan’s most protected industries, but Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s government scrapped the policy this year, urging farmers to become more competitive.

Japanese agriculture is “at a turning point”, Ken Saito, who was farm minister until a reshuffle this month, told reporters.

“Farmers have to think about producing food that sells. More than ever, they have to be attuned to the market,” he added.

And as Abe prepares for potential trade negotiations with US President Donald Trump, analysts say he may have to concede some ground on agriculture -- which could include Japan’s customary high tariffs on imported rice -- in order to avoid getting whacked with US duties on automobiles and other key exports. In Bali, public awareness of breast cancer remains low

What to see in Hiroshima and the Setouchi Region, Japan HIROSHIMA - The only place in Japan’s Setouchi region that will be familiar to most is Hiroshima, the city destroyed by the first atomic bomb in WW2. It’s a destination in its own right but makes a great base for exploring the Seto Inland Sea, containing more than 350 islands.

You’ll find Shinto shrines, archetypal Japanese landscapes and delicious food and drink including the deadly Fugo fish.

Hiroshima

Hiroshima is a five hour bullet train ride west of Tokyo and of course where the first atom bomb was dropped on 6th August 1945. It was almost completely flattened but since then it’s been entirely rebuilt. It’s an attractive vibrant city, but of course it’s hard to ignore its terrible history.

It’s dusk as I make my way down to the Motoyasu River to see the iconic Genbaku Dome, the shell of the Industrial Promotion Hall, preserved exactly as it was left after the blast.

This area was the commercial and political heart of the city, so it was an obvious target for the American bombers. The Dome was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 and it’s hard not to feel moved by the tragedy.

I walk over to the opposite bank which has been dedicated as Peace Memorial Park. The msuem details the history of Hiroshima, particularly

the dropping of the bomb and its aftermath. The main building deals with the events of August 6, through scientific explanation and there are rather grisly exhibits of items belonging to the victims. The east building tells the story of Hiroshima before and after the bombing and describes the city’s nuclear disarmament efforts.

The focal point of the Park is the Memorial Cenotaph, inscribed with over 220,000 names of those who lost their lives, with new names added every year. Nearby is the Peace Flame which will burn until all nuclear weapons are decommissioned. Every year there’s a memorial service on August 6th, when wreathes are laid at the Cenotaph. A moment’s silence is observed at 8:15 am, the precise moment of detonation, temple bells ring, sirens wail and white doves are released.

Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island

An hour’s ferry ride from Hiroshima is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Island of Itsuku-

shima, in the Seto inland sea, has been a holy place of Shintoism since the earliest times. The first shrine buildings here were probably erected in the 6th century. The present shrine dates from the 13th century and locals call the island Mijajima which means “Shrine Island”.

As I arrive, I pass the six pillars of the red entrance or Torii Gate, standing 16m tall and weighing 60 tons, rising from the sea. Surprisingly the pillars are not buried in the seabed but use their own weight to keep them standing. Historically, pilgrims had to steer their boats through the Torii before approaching the shrine.

My ferry is rather too large to pass through but there are boats for hire if you’re so minded.

The island itself was considered so sacred that, to preserve its purity, only monks were allowed to walk on its hallowed ground. The shrine was built on piles on the water, floating separate from the land, so pilgrims could pray.

The complex consists of multiple buildings, including a prayer hall, a main hall and a Noh Theatre stage, all connected by a series of boardwalks.

In spite of the crowds, it’s a serene place and the lack of doors and walls exaggerate the sense of space.

These days, pilgrims are allowed on the island. Most people climb the 500m Mount Misen, the highest point of the island, either on foot

or by a couple of cable cars. It’s too hot for me so I content myself with visiting the Shinto temple of Daishoin, built on a slope. It’s still a bit of climb and the steps are lined with rows of metal prayer wheels which you turn as you pass.

Kintai Bridge

Around 90 minutes by train from Hiroshima is the historic Kintai Bridge, spanning the Nishiki River in a series of wooden arches. It was built in 1673 to connect Iwakuni Castle, sitting on the top of Mt. Yokoyama, to Iwakuni town, after previous bridges had been washed away. It’s unique in the world and it’s thought that the idea came from China and nobody copied it because they didn’t understand the technology.

As I walk across I see the secret: the five arches sit on four stone piers as well as on two wooden piers rising from the dry riverbed where the bridge begins and ends. Regular maintenance was essential – every twenty years the

middle spans were replaced whilst the outer ones connecting to the banks were replaced every forty. What’s extraordinary is that no nails were used, rather the wooden parts were carefully fitted together and secured using metal bands.

For the first 195 years of its history, until the dismantling of the feudal system after the Meiji Restoration of 1868, only lords and their vassals were permitted to use the bridge. Unfortunately, in 1950 the bridge was washed away during Typhoon Kijia, but was rebuilt in 1953.

As I get to the over side, it’s like stepping back into old Japan, with the grounds of the ruler’s former residence now turned into Kikko Park. It includes museums, fountains, samurai houses, the Kikkawa family shrine and glass cases containing the mysterious sacred white snakes. They’re albino with red eyes and white scales, and grow to be 180 cm long and 15 cm in diameter. It was believed that they were messengers from Benten, the goddess of wealth.

Cormorant fishing is big here.

Fishermen in traditional costume tow wooden boats onto the river at night with a torch placed at the front of each boat to attract the fish, usually a variety of small trout. They release the cormorant into the water with a rope attached to its neck and once it catches a fish, the fishermen pull the bird in and make it spit the fish out. (IBP/net)

MANGUPURA — All this time, the type of cancer with the highest mortality rate is breast cancer. Previously people with breast cancer were usually women over the age of 50 or after menopause. However, at this time people with breast cancer have led to a younger age namely in the range of 15-35 years.

According to the initiator of the Bali Pink Ribbon, 10 years ago Balinese people still had low awareness of breast cancer.

Initially the data obtained from hospitals indicated that 70 percent of cancer patients treated at hospital had reached the stage 3-4. “This makes total treatment efforts difficult to carry out. We never stop to educate through seminars from villages to villages,” said Geye.

Ten years after that, people gradually had the understanding on breast cancer. However, her agency did not have specific data about how much public awareness about the dangers of breast cancer. She admitted the government does not have a program to register all breast cancer sufferers.

“One of the missions we are doing now is to encourage the government to make data collection. From the statistics, about 200-300 Balinese people register themselves to hospital every

year,” he concluded.

She estimated the rate of breast cancer sufferers is much higher. Many people don’t know about the symptoms and how to check it. “That’s what we are educating through seminars.

In addition to fundraising, this event is also meant to raise public awareness about the dangers of breast cancer,” she said when met at the fundraising through the Pink Ribbon 5 km Fun Walk and Run on Peninsula Island, The Nusa Dua area, on Saturday (Oct. 20).

The fundraising event has been held for ten times since 2008 meaning to support breast cancer education programs for women in Bali. The participants involved in this activity volunteered to contribute to help save lives and provide educational and health support for patients with breast cancer in Bali. Other than running and fun walking activities, it was also held breast screening for participants, food trucks, market stalls, music, and memorial lines.

“Originally, we estimated this event will be followed by around 1,500 participants. Aside from the people of Bali, the participants are also cancer caring groups from overseas such as those from Australia,” she added. (kmb23)

MANGUPURA — Results of the research by the Center for Geotechnology Research (LIPI) regarding liquefaction are quite astonishing. The phenomenon happening when the soil is saturated or somewhat saturated loses the strength and stiffness due to tension or known as liquefaction has the potential to occur in the South Kuta region, such as Kedonganan and Tanjung Benoa.

The participants involved in this activity volunteered to contribute to help save lives and provide educational and health support for patients with breast cancer in Bali.

Responding to the results of the study, the Head of Public Works and Settlement Agency (PUPR) of Badung, I.B. Surya Suamba, stated that nothing can predict the will of nature. Developed countries cannot even predict the will of the Creator.

“Japan, whose technology is advanced, cannot predict it because it is the will of nature, the will of God. So, what can be done if there is an earthquake is to activate the early warning system (EWS) so when an earthquake occurs people will be able to quickly save themselves, because there is no technology that can predict it,” said I.B. Surya Suamba, on Wednesday (Oct. 17).

According to him, the government can only carry out post-disaster recovery when infrastructure damage occurs. “When a disaster occurs, it must work (EWS-ed), so that people can run away. If disaster occurs, causing house to collapse or

crack to the roads, we will repair them because there has been no study or the expert addressing such a research,” he explained.

As reported, the search of Bali Post for research regarding the liquefaction in Bali found the results of researchers at the Center for Geotechnology Research (LIPI), Eko Wibowo, examining the potential for detection in the South Bali region.

In the RISET Journal of June 2016 issue, Eko Wibowo’s research article concluded about the danger of subsidence and liquefaction in the southern part of Bali Island. The area researched includes the Serangan, Tuban and Tanjung Benoa.

Selection of the region as the object of his research is considering the massive development in the region for the needs of accommodation facilities to support tourism.

Results of his research indicate

that Serangan-Tuban area has a very soft to soft clay layer; high plasticity and low shear strength.

This can cause the land in the area susceptible to collapse.

Meanwhile, the KedongananTanjung Benoa-Serangan area has a very loose and silt-sand layer.

With this geological condition, the region has a vulnerability to liquefaction triggered by earthquakes.

Similar research was also conducted by Rahmat Nawi Siregar, a graduate student of Physics Science at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Gadjah Mada University, using the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Geoelectric methods in Sanur-SeranganTanjung Benoa and Tuban. His results indicate the sand clay material has a percentage of fines less than 20 percent and is categorized into the area having a high potential for liquefaction. (kmb27)

Festival serves as a means of promotion and art regeneration

This was started with the Ulundanu Beratan Festival in June 2018. Featuring the theme of Danu Kertih, Uniting Diverse Indigenous Cultures of the Archipelago, the festival held for the fourth time involved 2,500 artists. It is much bigger than the previous year involving only 1,200 artists. Moreover, the event successfully combined the natural, cultural and religious tourism.

Furthermore, it was resumed with the Tanah Lot Art and Food Festival II in August 2018. In addition to introducing the coffee potential of Tabanan district and the BUMDes’

products through the MSME stand, this year’s Tanah Lot festival was also packed with the launch of the colossal Rejang Sandat Ratu Segara Dance involving 1,800 young female dancers that finally won the MURI award. In September, the festival was held at Jatiluwih with the theme of Matha Subak. Jatiluwih Attraction Management Agency also managed to pack traditional and modern arts very well.

Other than tourist objects, the festival is also functioned to show off the potential of the subdistrict. For instance, this year Kerambitan sub-dis-

trict has entered the fourth festival. For four days, many colossal arts had been displayed and danced by community components from fifteen villages in Kerambitan subdistrict. With the theme of Yowana Masikian-- Harmony in Blessing Land, Kerambitan subdistrict head, I Gede Sukanada, explained the theme raised the values and awareness of the sense of togetherness as a whole of the unified community. Hopefully, all the elements of society, especially younger generation (Yowana), can go hand in hand in building Kerambitan subdistrict with all the artistic and cul-

tural potential. As a result, it can grow into a quality tourist destination. “This awareness of stepping together will be the foundation of community interaction in Kerambitan to realize harmony in this blessed land,” he explained.

According to Sukanada, apart from aiming to encourage the cultural potential, it basically revives tourism in Kerambitan subdistrict having been the icon of Tabanan district for several decades with the okokan and tektekan art. “So, there is art regeneration in Kerambitan subdistrict,” he said.

The Kerambitan Festival V next year will feature the arts having almost been suspended like the Wayang Wong at Kelating village and Andir operetta at Tista. “We will search and make data collection on how to restore the glory of the distinctive arts of Kerambitan,” he concluded.

The festival having become a regular event was appreciated by the Acting Deputy of the Development of Foreign Tourism Marketing, Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia, Ni Wayan Giri Adnyani. When attending the Tanah Lot Festival, she said the event or festival had multiple benefits. According to her, reviving tourism through such events is the same as improving local people’s welfare because it involves the local community.

“Through festival, we can introduce local tourism and motivate communities to continuously be creative and innovate,” she explained. She also hoped the festivals and other events are consistently held annually because such events and festivals can bring in tourists to Bali, especially to Tabanan. (kmb28)

Environment Agency shortage of truck to transport garbage BANGLI - The Bangli Environment Agency (DLH) currently has 14 units of garbage truck. In fact, the number of fleets owned is still considered to inadequately serve the garbage transportation across the regions in Bangli.

Secretary of DLH Bangli, Ida Bagus Sobya, recently said that

of the 14 units of garbage trucks currently owned, two of them are old. Besides, the two trucks are also in damaged condition. Both DLH trucks, he said, were procured around 1980s.

Since the two trucks are damaged, the DLH currently can only take advantage of the 12 other

trucks to service garbage transportation. With such number of trucks, Sobya considered it inadequate. Ideally, to serve the entire district town area or subdistrict town, the DLH should have at least 18 trucks.

LONDON - Marie Antoinette’s dazzling diamonds and pearls, unseen in public for two centuries, went on show in London on Friday before going on sale next month in one of the most important royal jewellery auctions in history.

The treasures were secretly whisked out of Paris in 1791 in the aftermath of the French Revolution and have been privately owned by relatives ever since.

The collection, held by the Italian royal House of Bourbon-Parma, is being sold by Sotheby’s auction house in Geneva on November 14.

On show at their London headquarters, the lots include 10 pieces which belonged to Marie Antoinette, the last queen of France before the French Revolution. She was guillotined in Paris aged 37 in October 1793.

“The romance, magic and universality of her name is because she represents that sophistication of l’ancien regime. She is it,” Andres White Correal, Sotheby’s senior director of jewellery, told AFP.

WASHINGTON - Actress Selma Blair revealed she has multiple sclerosis Saturday, in an emotional Instagram post offering insight into her life with the illness.

The “Legally Blonde” and “Cruel Intentions” star, 46, said she was diagnosed with the chronic central nervous system disease -- which causes symptoms including fatigue, pain and coordination problems -- in August after suffering symptoms “for years.”

“I am disabled. I fall sometimes. I drop things. My memory is foggy. And my left side is asking for directions from a broken gps. But we are doing it. And I laugh and I don’t know exactly what I will do precisely but I will do my best,” she wrote.

Blair, who is currently working on Netflix sci-fi drama “Another Life,” said she revealed her diagnosis to share her gratitude toward costume designer Alissa Swanson, who “carefully gets my legs in my pants, pulls my tops over my head, buttons my coats and offers her shoulder to steady myself.”

Blair also thanked celebrity friends including fellow “Cruel Intentions” star Sarah Michelle Gellar as well as Jaime King and other Hollywood friends for supporting her.

“I am in the thick of it but I hope to give some hope to others,” she said.

“I want to play with my son again. I want to walk down the street and ride my horse.

I have MS and I am ok. But if you see me, dropping crap all over the street, feel free to help me pick it up. It takes a whole day for me alone. “ (afp)

A monogrammed ring containing a lock of her hair is valued at $8,000-10,000.

“The ring is a small diamond ring with a lock of her hair inside, with the monogram MA set with rose diamonds,” Sotheby’s jewellery specialist Benoit Repellin told AFP. “The value of the diamonds themselves is very low but there is an emotional value and a historic value behind it.” (afp)

Five-star Marquez romps to MotoGP title as Dovizioso crashes

MOTEGI - Honda’s Marc Marquez stormed to a nail-biting victory in Japan Sunday to capture his third straight MotoGP world championship as Ducati rival Andrea Dovizioso crashed out.

The Spanish sensation has now won five championships in motorcycling’s premier class, putting him level with Australian legend Mick Doohan.

Marquez, still just 25, trails only the Italian pair of Valentino Rossi, who won the last of his seven championships in 2009, and Giacomo Agostini, whose record eighth came in 1975, in the alltime list.

“I feel really, really good,” whooped Marquez after Dovizioso’s late spill confirmed his eighth victory of the season.

“I already imagined that it will be (decided) here but the important thing is that when you have the first chance, you do it.

“It wasn’t the best circuit to do it but I worked hard all weekend,” added Marquez.

“I was able to follow Andrea and decided to attack before the last lap. I was pushing really hard, so he made a mistake -- I’m disappointed because he deserves to be on the podium with us.”

Marquez started from sixth on the grid at Motegi but quickly knifed through the field and was third by the end of the first lap.

He flirted with disaster on lap 14, however, after overtaking Dovizioso at turn nine before running wide at the next corner and spitting up dirt and dust as he battled to control a violent wobble.

That heart-in-mouth moment al-

lowed Dovizioso to retake the lead, but Marquez continued to swarm all over the Italian, finally slashing past him with a daredevil move on lap 21 of 24.

Dovizioso, who needed to complete a pole to flag victory to keep alive his fading championship hopes, crashed out on the penultimate lap in a desperate last push, ending this year’s title race.

- Dance with caution Marquez was mobbed by his team mechanics after crossing the line to seal his coronation with three races left.

“The big boss will enjoy this,” smiled Marquez after wrapping up the title at Honda’s home race, before rejoining the party at his team garage he revealed afterwards had left him nursing a sore shoulder.

“The shoulder just popped out.

Luckily with the adrenalin it doesn’t hurt, but I’ll need to be careful not to overdo it on the dancefloor tonight!”

Fellow Honda rider Cal Crutchlow finished runner-up after Dovizioso’s fall with Alex Rins (Suzuki) edging out Rossi (Yamaha) to round out the podium.

Meanwhile, three-time world champion Jorge Lorenzo will miss next weekend’s Australian race after sitting out the Japanese round with injury.

Ducati said the Spaniard, who fractured his wrist at the previous race in Thailand, will aim to return at the penultimate weekend in Malaysia at the start of November.

Lorenzo paid tribute to Marquez, who he will join at Honda next year.

“Sometimes we don’t agree on the way to compete,” he tweeted.

“But I recognise talent and excellence and there’s no doubt about (his).
