It’s a membership-based service that offers subscribers two levels — $10 for standard sound quality and $20 for high fidelity sound quality. Jay-Z said last month that the service had gotten to one million subscribers. But the service has struggled against competitors like Spotify and Pandora, which offer free subscriptions. At Tuesday’s concert, there were just a few passing references to Tidal. There also were some videos with people talking about making the world a better place, but nothing about the organization that is getting the money from the show. Jay-Z told the crowd the event wasn’t
sponses from the packed arena. Usher was an exception to the slew of old favorites, performing his new single, “Chains,” which focuses on racial injustice. He put the song out last week through Tidal. Other artists who performed at the concert included rappers T.I., Rick Ross, Lil Wayne and Meek Mill, reggae performer Damian Marley, country singer Thomas Rhett, French band Indochine, and singers Nick Jonas, Alessia Cara and Justine Skye. At the concert, it was announced that Marley had become one of Tidal’s artist-owners. Tidal’s list of co-owners also includes Madonna, Rihanna, Kanye West and Alicia Keys. (ap)

Indonesia to cut number of Jakarta flights per hour over safety concerns
NEW YORK — Jay-Z and Beyonce were joined by a slew of artists a one-off. “This is our first annual including Nicki Minaj and Usher at Barclays Center in Brooklyn Tues- event,” he told the cheering crowd. Most of the artists performed wellday night for a charity concert put on by the streaming service Tidal known hits that received rousing rethat covered rap, R&B, reggae and even a little country. The concert, “TIDAL X: 1020 Amplified by HTC,” was a little like streaming a musical hit parade, as most of the artists only sang one song, and even major stars like Jay-Z and Beyonce kept to short sets. The goal of the event was to raise funds that would be given to the New World Foundation, an organization that funds social movements. Concert organizers said all money from ticket prices was going to the charity, estimated to be about $1 million. Jay-Z and other artists announced in March that they were the co-owners of Tidal, which was presented as the first artist-owned music and video platform.

NEW YORK - Gwen Stefani has opened up about her divorce from fellow rocker Gavin Rossdale in the form of music, releasing an emotional song entitled “Used to Love You.” The No Doubt frontwoman on Tuesday put out a video for the song that consists solely of close-up footage of the singer looking forlorn and reflective. To a light electronic beat, Stefani sings, “I don’t know why I cry / But I think it’s because I remembered for the first time since I hated you / That I used to love you.” Stefani had debuted the song Saturday night at a concert in New York, telling the audience at the start of her encore that she would share a song about “pain and love and my real life.” The song is notably more melancholy than the
best-known songs of No Doubt, which built a wide following in the 1990s as it brought ska music into the mainstream. Stefani, a California native, met Rossdale when the English singer and guitarist’s alternative rock band Bush was touring with No Doubt in the United States. The couple married in 2002 and have been raising three children in Los Angeles. The rockers had generally stayed out of the limelight except in 2004 when a paternity test revealed that Rossdale had a daughter with the British designer Pearl Lowe, with whom he had an earlier relationship. The couple announced their divorce in a brief statement in August, saying they would remain “partners in marriage” to provide “a happy and healthy environment” for their children. (afp)

Indonesia will cut the number of flights allowed per hour from Jakarta’s main airport due to safety concerns, officials said on Wednesday, following a series of major crashes that have killed more than 300 in the last year.
Indonesian airports have struggled to cope with the huge expansion of air travel in Southeast Asia’s largest economy, getting poor marks in a 2014 safety audit by the U.N. aviation agency due to insufficient staffing. To help ease the work load on air traffic controllers at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, it will be limited to 62 takeoffs and landings an hour, down from around 72 at peak hours currently, said Muzaffar Ismail, director for aircraft operations at the transportation ministry. “With the high frequency of flights, there is a greater risk of collisions and accidents,” Ismail said. The changes were not expected to lead to a reduction in the number of take-offs and landings per day, as more flights would be scheduled for off-peak hours to meet the new capacity requirements. Haze from slash-and-burn forest fires was not mentioned as a safety concern. Experts questioned how reducing the number of flights would
actually fix Indonesia’s air safety problems. “If 72 flights an hour was not safe, then why did they approve it in the first place?” said Jakartabased aviation consultant Gerry Soejatman. “It seems to be an overreaction. Instead of mitigating the risk, they seem to be avoiding the risk.” Indonesia has a poor aviation safety record, with four major crashes in less than a year. In December, an AirAsia flight went down in the Java Sea, killing all 162 on board. More than 120 people died in June in the crash of a military transport plane, while all 54 on board a Trigana Air aircraft died in a crash in Papua in August. Agriculture of Bali, seized by various interests
Drought coupled with the decrease in water discharge makes farmers in Bali scream. Recognition of Komang Widiantara, a farmer who is also the chief of Subak Celuk Buluh, Buleleng, is a portrait of farmer’s scream in Bali.
He said that water crisis has made hundreds of hectares of paddy fields in the area dry. Farmers are forced to siphoned water from the river nearby. Similar recognition is expressed by Nengah Bumana. This farmer of Subak Tembuku, Bangli, also complains about the difficulty of being a farmer during dry season. Other than water crisis, he also told about the decline in the mutual
cooperation in the management of agricultural land. Recognition of these farmers represents a small part of challenges faced by farmers in Bali. The challenge is not only the drought and water. Policy of water management and water business makes farmers in Bali face difficulty. Food self-sufficiency program imposed on the agricultural sector in Bali seems difficult to be realized. High
conversion of agricultural land in Bali becomes a serious threat for the existence of subak. Due to rapid land conversion, some subak areas in Denpasar and Badung only leave a memory. Land conversion reaching 20-30 hectares per year makes the planting area continue to shrink. Aside from land decline, farmers in Bali are also squeezed by non-integrated agricultural sector
policy. The target of self-sufficiency is not even poised by the expansion of planting areas. When self-sufficiency target is only done by optimizing production and subsidizing fertilizer and seeds, it will not work optimally. This measure seems ineffective when agricultural pests are not handled properly. Continue to page 2 Imbalanced ...
