BEING boy and girl (truna and daha) at Bungaya customary village, Bebandem, Karangasem, is not as easy as imagined. Just like getting into a new school, becoming boy and girl at this old village must also go through an orientation period. Recruitment process of boy and girl can only be done coinciding with a series of the usaba dangsil ritual. Readiness of local residents to be boy and girl should be tested on the first day of fasting on the melasti procession to the south sea at Bugbug village on August 17. The process of being legitimate boy and girl at Bungaya village has become a very sacred ritual. Due to its sacredness, they are advised to ask for permission first to school or workplace at least for ten days. Moreover, the usaba dangsil cannot be determined when it will be organized or within how many years. Although having been planned for ten years, but, in fact, if the deities do not allow, the usaba dangsil still cannot be implemented.

Philippines’ Duterte threatens to quit U.N. after drugs war censure

MANILA - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte railed against the United Nations on Sunday after it called for an end to the wave of killings unleashed by his war on drugs, saying he might leave the organisation and invite China and others to form a new one. Two U.N. human rights experts last week urged Manila to stop the extra-judicial executions and killings that have escalated since Duterte won the presidency on a promise to wipe out drugs. About 900 suspected drug traffickers have been killed since he came to power after winning the election on May 9. Duterte on Friday denied that the

government was responsible and in a middle-of-the-night news conference in his home town, Davao, said the deaths were not the work of the police and invited U.N. experts to investigate themselves. The news conference was broadcast by local media and the full version was posted on Facebook by GMA news. “I will prove to the world that

you are a very stupid expert,” he said, urging them to count not just the number of drug-related deaths but also the innocent lives lost to drugs. He then launched an attack on the United Nations and its members - including by inference Manila’s traditionally close ally, Washington - saying, it could not fulfil its own mandate but was “worrying about the bones of criminals piling up”. “I do not want to insult you. But maybe we’ll just have to decide to separate from the United Nations,” he said. “Why do you have to listen

to this stupid?” Criticising the U.N. for not doing enough to address hunger and terrorism and for not being able to do anything about Syria and Iraq and allowing big powers to bomb villages and kill innocent civilians, he said he would invite China and African nations to form another global organisation. “You now, United Nations, if you can say one bad thing about me, I can give you 10 (about you). I tell you, you are an inutile. Because if you are really true to your mandate, you could have stopped all these wars and killing.”

Asked about the possible consequences of his comments, he said: “What is ... repercussions? After having no longer been held in the interval of 24 years, this year is ultimately held again after the past 14 years. The first test is on the melasti procession where Ida Bagus Selonding and Ida Batara put on yellow cloth and waistcloth. Hundreds of candidates of boy and girl have gathered at Pura Bale Agung temple from the morning. As usual in the tradition of this ancient village, they are not allowed to wear topless shirts. didates of boy and girl are in the vanguard when escorting the pralingga or sanctified effigies on the melasti procession to the sea and then followed by customary villagers of Bungaya from 13 customary hamlets, residents of Gumang, Asak and Jungsri village. This is an initial and severe enough test for the boy and girl. Melasti procession from Bungaya village to the south sea of Bugbug village is not easy as must take a distance of approximately eight kilometers. The road access is also up and down. Although quite far, the majority of boys and girls seem very ready for this first test. Though in fasting period, they can go through the melasti process well. In fact, when arriving at the south sea, under the heat of the sun, they are strictly forbidden to eat snack haphazardly. Abstinence of fasting remains valid until the procession ends. The boys and girls of seven years upwards still look solemn in undergoing the melasti procession. Moreover, when returning from the south sea to the Bale Agung temple of Bungaya they pass through quite heavy terrain with more ascending paths along the way amid the heat of the sun around 12:00. The tipat-bantal war tradition is said to have begun with the arrival of Ki Kebo Iwa who came to Kapal village on assignment from the King of Bali at the time; Asta Sura Ratna Bhumi Banten to repair the village Purusadha Temple. However, Kapal village was suffering a famine at the time and a chaotic and pathetic condition was overwhelming the villagers. Ki Kebo Iwa eventually invoked instruction from the Creator by meditation at the Purusadha Temple. In his meditation, he received a revelation from Hyang Pasupati instructing the local residents to implement Aci Rah Pengangon or Aci Rare Angon by presenting

Ever since then, this interesting ritual has been routinely performed with people gathering in front of Kapal Village’s Temple, where they divide themselves into two groups. Each group has tipat and bantal ‘weapons’ and after being instructed by the village authorities the two teams start throwing the rice patties at each other accompanied by the sound of Baleganjur gamelan music and the striking of the kulkul (traditional split wooden percussion instrument/tool). The battle begins in the middle courtyard of the temple and then moves to the outer courtyard and finally onto the street with tipat or bantal wizzing like bullets as they are thrown blindly by the partici-

pants in a trance like state. Many of the men engaged in battle are shirtless though they all wear customary clothing (headscarf, sarong and selempot ). Although the rice patties must be thrown northward and southward, some of the participants will ignorantly throw the tipat-bantal at those watching the spectacle, but everyone seems happy and excited about the whole thing. Interestingly, despite being hit rather hard by the tipat-bantal, no one is ever injured and in fact those who are struck laugh vivaciously. The war lasts for about 30 minutes and ends with the ‘warriors’ shaking hands in forgiveness and everyone clearing the area of rice patty debris with many people taking home bits of the ‘shrapnel’ to disperse in the moors and paddy fields.

Whee! Niagara Falls latest natural wonder to add zip line

NIAGARA Falls is the latest natural wonder to add a zip line, offering honeymooners and everyone else the chance to take an adrenaline-pumping plunge toward churning mist at speeds topping 40 mph. The elevated cable rides have evolved from a novel way to explore jungle canopies to almost necessary additions to lure tourists in the 21st century to established destinations. It’s a trend that’s exposed a rift between those who approach nature like contemplative monks and others who require an extreme, Indiana Jones-style experience. “We can’t make these into museums,” argued Tom Benson, co-founder and chief experience officer at WildPlay Element Parks, which built the Niagara Falls zip line. “How do you take a teenager and get them away from a game console to something that is going to capture their imagination?” The booming popularity of commercial zip lines over the past five years — there are at least 200 in the United States alone — means more people are experiencing nature in a way that would make Thoreau dizzy.

They can ride above the tree line at New River Gorge in West Virginia, over California’s Catalina Island, above lush Hawaiian landscapes and in view of Denali in Alaska. A zip line ride in Mexico’s Copper Canyon runs more than 1 ½ miles, one in Nepal has a drop of 2,000 feet, and another in Sun City, South Africa, boasts top speeds of 100 mph. “You feel all this air rushing past you, it’s this great almost roller coaster-esque feeling,” Quillan Brady said after riding on the new Eagle Flyer zip line at Lake George in New York’s Adirondacks. “But really, what I think makes it is looking around and seeing all this natural New York beauty.” Niagara Falls-area resident James Bannister doesn’t quite see it that way. To him, the new zip line there amounts to a “circus midwaystyle attraction.” “Every once in a while somebody comes along and says, ‘Boy,

you could build another great attraction here!’ As if the falls itself wasn’t enough of an attraction,” Bannister said. Zip line fans say it’s still possible to marvel at nature while whizzing above it at highway speeds. At Niagara Falls, WildPlay’s Benson said his four lines angling 2,200 feet along the Canadian side of the gorge were designed to be sensitive to the local environment. Catalina Island’s zip line makes stops for presentations at designated “eco-stations.” And riders of the Lake George zip line who were questioned after their rides said they had a new perspective on the natural wonder. The owner of the Lake George line, Ralph Macchio Sr. (father of the “Karate Kid” actor with the same name), said he got the idea for his attraction by gazing out from atop the majestic Adirondack peaks. “I thought, ‘Gee, if you could look at it like you were flying like a bird and get that view, that would be an Adirondack experience,’” Macchio said. “And that’s why I built the zip line.” (ap)

Rare Tyrannosaurus rex skull arrives at Seattle museum SEATTLE — Paleontologists with Seattle’s Burke Museum have unearthed the bones of a Tyrannosaurus rex that lived more than 66 million years ago, including a rare nearly complete 4-foot long skull. The remarkable discovery includes the dinosaur’s vertebrae, ribs, hips and lower jaw bones, and represents about 20 percent of the meat-eating predator. Several dozen scientists, volunteers, students and others worked over the summer to excavate the bones in the Hell Creek Formation in Montana, a site well known for fossil finds. The team later encased the massive skull in a protective plaster cast, lifted the 2,500-pound load onto a flatbed truck with the help of local Montana ranchers and drove it to Seattle. The skull was unloaded at the Burke Museum Thursday. The plaster-covered skull will be on display to the public for several weeks starting Saturday. Over the next year, paleontologists will painstakingly work on removing the rock around the skull. Scientists estimate the dinosaur is 85 percent the size of the largest T. rex discovered and, based on the size of its skull, lived about 15 years. They believe this T. rex roamed the earth in the late Cretaceous period. There are only 14 other nearly

complete T. rex skulls that have been found, the museum said. “We think the Tufts-Love Rex is going to be an iconic specimen for the Burke Museum and the state of Washington and will be a must-see for dinosaur researchers as well,” Gregory Wilson, a University of Washington biology professor and adjunct curator of vertebrate paleontology at the Burke Museum, said in a statement. He led the expedition team. The T. rex is named after two museum paleontology volunteers, Jason Love and Luke Tufts, who were combing for fossils when they came across large fossilized vertebrae sticking out of a rocky hillside last summer. The two were with a team collecting fossils as part of the Hell Creek Project, currently led by Wilson and started by Jack Horner, who discovered the world’s first dinosaur embryos, and Nathan Myhrvold, former Microsoft chief technology officer who is a Burke Museum research associate. The team knew the fossils belonged to a meat-eating dinosaur because of the large size and appearance of the bones, but they weren’t sure whether it was a T. rex. They didn’t have the chance to excavate further until this summer when they returned to the site. (ap)

Is there any impact of this program on the community? Demulih is one of the villages in Susut subdistrict. It is located in the west of Bangli town and bordered with Sangsang River. This village bordered with Gianyar district offers a fascinating natural beauty. The overlay of paddy field looks very spacious. Harmonious blend of green and yellow paddies exudes a beauty, so that it increasingly

cycling tour. Unfortunately, it has no impact on the community. They are just crossing,” he said, Friday (Aug. 19). This less developed tourism village is alleged to happen due to lack of maximum arrangement and the campaign carried out by the district government. All this time, the government only focuses on some tourism villages. The Blue Cut fire, named after a narrow gorge where it ignited about 75 miles (120 km) northeast of Los Angeles on Tuesday in an area called the Cajon Pass, has burned more than 37,000 acres (15,000 hectares) and destroyed 105 homes and 213 outbuildings, said fire information officer Mike Lopez. At its height, the blaze forced authorities to order more than 80,000 residents to evacuate their homes. But with the fire 73 percent contained, many residents were allowed to return home, Lopez said. Overnight, firefighters built strong containment lines near Wrightwood, which allowed residents of that ski resort town to

lending over three years. But political opposition to measures involving subsidy cuts, devaluation and new taxes while tens of millions rely on state-subsidised food, make the programme ambitious. The cost of failure, say economists, is high. The budget deficit is near 10 percent of GDP. Inflation is 14 percent. A shortage of foreign currency has hit imports. Foreign investors are unable to repatriate profit and some are shutting shop, hit by capital and import

controls imposed over the last 18 months. Businesses are unable to secure enough foreign currency to import components or pay a premium above 40 percent to obtain dollars on the black market. JAKARTA - The governments reported plan to significantly hike cigarette prices has sparked pros and cons reactions from various circles such as cigarette industries, lawmakers and other quarters. Chairman of the Indonesian White Cigarette Producers Association (Gaprindo), Muhaimin Moefti, expressed worries that the plan if implemented would harm cigarette industries. Some factories can face bankruptcy and close down. The significant price increases can reduce industries sales turnover as cigarette consumption by low-income people will decline. It can also lead financially weak addicted smokers to commit crimes. The normal prices of cigarettes currently range from Rp15,000 to Rp25,000 (US$1,13 - US$18.05) per pack. The government is planning to raise prices up to about Rp50,000 (US$36.10) per pack. This means that a smoker who consumes one pack of cigarettes a day would spend some Rp1.5 million per month for cigarettes, a price which is higher than the workers monthly basic minimum wage of Rp1.4 million in West Nusa Tenggara Province, for instance. “Cigarettes price is higher than the salary of an auxiliary teacher,” Zaki Nur Salim said on his Facebook wall. After all, bankruptcy of cigarette industries will also harm state revenues as cigarettes/tobacco taxes contribute the largest portion of the countrys tax receipts. Cigarette taxes in the state budget amount to R141.7 trillion and contribute 52.7 percent to the countrys overall tax revenues. “No matter what kind of goods they are, they will have adverse impacts if their prices are increased too high,” Muhaimin Moefti was quoted by Indoberita.com online media as saying on Saturday. Therefore, Mukhamad Misbakhun, a member of Commission XI on financial affairs of the House of Representatives (DPR) warned the government to be cautious with regard to its plan to increase cigarette price to Rp50,000 per pack. According to Misbakhun, if the price of cigarettes is raised by Rp50,000 per pack, it will cause many cigarette factories to close down and thousands of workers will lose jobs. It will in the end affect small, medium and large scale industries. “Small scale cigarettes industries are already facing heavy burden as the government also imposes a higher rate of cigarette excise band which is regarded as less protective to industries interest. Misbakhun who is a politician of the Golkar Party explained that if cigarette factories were closed down, millions of workers will lose jobs. Govt to upgrade runway of Silangit Airport

SIMALUNGUN - The Government has decided to upgrade the runway of Silangit Airport to support the tourism development of Lake Toba. The runway would be lengthen to 2,650 meters and widen to 45 meters, Coordinating Minister for

Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said here, on Saturday evening, after attending a limited cabinet meeting. Currently, the runway is 2,400 meters long and 30 meters wide. The airport is expected to be able to accommodate Boeing 737 800

aircraft after being upgraded. Besides, the runway of Sibisa Airport in Toba Samosir District will be lengthened to 2,250 meters so Boeing 737 500 could land on it, the minister noted. The Sibisa Airport now has runway measuring 750 meters long and 23 meters wide.

“The meeting was actually not over, it will be finalized on Sunday. The President wants to personally see the location of Lake Toba Authority,” Pandjaitan said. The government also plans to build a 87 km-long toll road from Pematang Siantar to Simalungun in 2017.

“It will be easier because over 50 km of the toll road covers land belonging to PTPN (state plantation company). So, we hope that the construction of toll road from Medan up to here will be fully completed in 2019,” the minister said. (ant)

Bombing at wedding party in southern Turkey kills at least 50 GAZIANTEP - At least 50 people were killed on Saturday when a suspected suicide bomber detonated his explosives among people dancing on the street at a wedding party in the southern Turkish city of Gaziantep, the local governor’s office said. President Tayyip Erdogan said it was likely that Islamic State militants carried out the late-night attack, the deadliest bombing this year in Turkey which faces threats from militants at home and across the border with Syria. Celebrations were coming to an end and some families had already left when the blast tore through partygoers, and women and children were among those who had died, witnesses said. Blood stains and burns marked the walls of the narrow lane where the wedding party was attacked. Women in white and checkered scarves cried, sitting crosslegged and waiting outside the morgue for word on missing relatives. “The celebrations were coming to an end and there was a big explosion among people dancing,” said 25-year-old Veli Can. “There was blood and body parts everywhere.”

The local governor’s office said in a statement 50 people were killed in the bombing, and more wounded were still being treated in hospitals around the province. A prosecutor’s office said they had found a destroyed suicide vest at the blast site. The bride and groom survived the attack, though the groom was wounded, a local official said. It had been a traditional henna night, a celebration held by the bride’s family before the wedding itself when henna paint is applied to the guests. At least 12 people were buried on Sunday, but other funerals would have to wait because many of the victims were blown to pieces and DNA forensics tests would be needed to identify them, security sources said. The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party, or HDP, said in a statement that the wedding was for

one of its members, and women and children had been among those killed. Mahmut Togrul, an HDP lawmaker from Gaziantep, around 40 km (25 miles) north of the border with Syria, told Reuters it was a Kurdish wedding. Islamic State has been blamed for suicide bombings on Kurdish gatherings in the past as militants try to stir ethnic tensions. “It was carried out like an atrocity,” witness Ibrahim Ozdemir said. “We want to end these massacres. We are in pain, especially the women and children.” Turkey is still tense after an attempted coup on July 15 which Ankara blames on U.S.-based preacher Fethullah Gulen. He has denied the charge. RIO DE JANEIRO - American Matthew Centrowitz pulled off a shock victory in the 1,500m final on Saturday, stunning pre-race favourite Asbel Kiprop of Kenya to secure his country’s first gold medal in the event since 1908. all the focus was on Kenya’s former Olympic champion Kiprop, who had won the last three world titles. But after a pedestrian race that was won in a time 24 seconds outside world record pace, Centrowitz held off defending champion Taoufik Makhloufi of Algeria to cross the line in 3:50:00.

“It’s been a dream come true,” Centrowitz told reporters. “Doing my victory lap, I literally kept screaming to everyone I know ‘Are you kidding me?’” Britain’s double 1,500m Olympic champion Sebastian Coe, the current IAAF President, awarded the gold medal to Centrowitz.

RIO DE JANEIRO - American Matthew Centrowitz pulled off a shock victory in the 1,500m final on Saturday, stunning pre-race favourite Asbel Kiprop of Kenya to secure his country’s first gold medal in the event since 1908. In the run-up to the Games few expected the 26-year-old to challenge for a medal as

all the focus was on Kenya’s former Olympic champion Kiprop, who had won the last three world titles. But after a pedestrian race that was won in a time 24 seconds outside world record pace, Centrowitz held off defending champion Taoufik Makhloufi of Algeria to cross the line in 3:50:00.

“It’s been a dream come true,” Centrowitz told reporters. “Doing my victory lap, I literally kept screaming to everyone I know ‘Are you kidding me?’” Britain’s double 1,500m Olympic champion Sebastian Coe, the current IAAF President, awarded the gold medal to Centrowitz.

Bombing at wedding party in southern Turkey kills at least 50 GAZIANTEP - At least 50 people were killed on Saturday when a suspected suicide bomber detonated his explosives among people dancing on the street at a wedding party in the southern Turkish city of Gaziantep, the local governor’s office said. President Tayyip Erdogan said it was likely that Islamic State militants carried out the late-night attack, the deadliest bombing this year in Turkey which faces threats from militants at home and across the border with Syria. Celebrations were coming to an end and some families had already left when the blast tore through partygoers, and women and children were among those who had died, witnesses said. Blood stains and burns marked the walls of the narrow lane where the wedding party was attacked. Women in white and checkered scarves cried, sitting crosslegged and waiting outside the morgue for word on missing relatives. “The celebrations were coming to an end and there was a big explosion among people dancing,” said 25-year-old Veli Can. “There was blood and body parts everywhere.”

The local governor’s office said in a statement 50 people were killed in the bombing, and more wounded were still being treated in hospitals around the province. A prosecutor’s office said they had found a destroyed suicide vest at the blast site. The bride and groom survived the attack, though the groom was wounded, a local official said. It had been a traditional henna night, a celebration held by the bride’s family before the wedding itself when henna paint is applied to the guests. At least 12 people were buried on Sunday, but other funerals would have to wait because many of the victims were blown to pieces and DNA forensics tests would be needed to identify them, security sources said. The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party, or HDP, said in a statement that the wedding was for

one of its members, and women and children had been among those killed. Mahmut Togrul, an HDP lawmaker from Gaziantep, around 40 km (25 miles) north of the border with Syria, told Reuters it was a Kurdish wedding. Islamic State has been blamed for suicide bombings on Kurdish gatherings in the past as militants try to stir ethnic tensions. “It was carried out like an atrocity,” witness Ibrahim Ozdemir said. “We want to end these massacres. We are in pain, especially the women and children.” Turkey is still tense after an attempted coup on July 15 which Ankara blames on U.S.-based preacher Fethullah Gulen. He has denied the charge. It was the deadliest attack since October last year, when suicide bombers killed 100 people after they attacked a rally of pro-Kurdish and labour activists outside Ankara’s main train station. Chairman of the Indonesian White Cigarette Producers Association (Gaprindo), Muhaimin Moefti, expressed worries that the plan if implemented would harm cigarette industries. Some factories can face bankruptcy and close down. The significant price increases can reduce industries sales turnover as cigarette consumption by low-income people will decline. It can also lead financially weak addicted smokers to commit crimes. The normal prices of cigarettes currently range from Rp15,000 to Rp25,000 (US$1,13 - US$18.05) per pack. The government is planning to raise prices up to about Rp50,000 (US$36.10) per pack. This means that a smoker who consumes one pack of cigarettes a day would spend some Rp1.5 million per month for cigarettes, a price which is higher than the workers monthly basic minimum wage of Rp1.4 million in West Nusa Tenggara Province, for instance. “Cigarettes price is higher than the salary of an auxiliary teacher,” Zaki Nur Salim said on his Facebook wall. After all, bankruptcy of cigarette industries will also harm state revenues as cigarettes/tobacco taxes contribute the largest portion of the countrys tax receipts. Cigarette taxes in the state budget amount to R141.7 trillion and contribute 52.7 percent to the countrys overall tax revenues. “No matter what kind of goods they are, they will have adverse impacts if their prices are increased too high,” Muhaimin Moefti was quoted by Indoberita.com online media as saying on Saturday. Therefore, Mukhamad Misbakhun, a member of Commission XI on financial affairs of the House of Representatives (DPR) warned the government to be cautious with regard to its plan to increase cigarette price to Rp50,000 per pack. According to Misbakhun, if the price of cigarettes is raised by Rp50,000 per pack, it will cause many cigarette factories to close down and thousands of workers will lose jobs. It will in the end affect small, medium and large scale industries. “Small scale cigarettes industries are already facing heavy burden as the government also imposes a higher rate of cigarette excise band which is regarded as less protective to industries interest. Misbakhun who is a politician of the Golkar Party explained that if cigarette factories were closed down, millions of workers will lose jobs. Govt to upgrade runway of Silangit Airport

SIMALUNGUN - The Government has decided to upgrade the runway of Silangit Airport to support the tourism development of Lake Toba. The runway would be lengthen to 2,650 meters and widen to 45 meters, Coordinating Minister for

Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said here, on Saturday evening, after attending a limited cabinet meeting. Currently, the runway is 2,400 meters long and 30 meters wide. The airport is expected to be able to accommodate Boeing 737 800

aircraft after being upgraded. Besides, the runway of Sibisa Airport in Toba Samosir District will be lengthened to 2,250 meters so Boeing 737 500 could land on it, the minister noted. The Sibisa Airport now has runway measuring 750 meters long and 23 meters wide.

“The meeting was actually not over, it will be finalized on Sunday. The President wants to personally see the location of Lake Toba Authority,” Pandjaitan said. The government also plans to build a 87 km-long toll road from Pematang Siantar to Simalungun in 2017.

“It will be easier because over 50 km of the toll road covers land belonging to PTPN (state plantation company). So, we hope that the construction of toll road from Medan up to here will be fully completed in 2019,” the minister said. (ant)

LOS ANGELES - Firefighters had a Southern California wildfire mostly surrounded on Saturday, allowing thousands of evacuated residents to return to their houses as another fire further north moved perilously close to the historic Hearst Castle, officials said. The Blue Cut fire, named after a narrow gorge where it ignited about 75 miles (120 km) northeast of Los Angeles on Tuesday in an area called the Cajon Pass, has burned more than 37,000 acres (15,000 hectares) and destroyed 105 homes and 213 outbuildings, said fire information officer Mike Lopez. At its height, the blaze forced authorities to order more than 80,000 residents to evacuate their homes. But with the fire 73 percent contained, many residents were allowed to return home, Lopez said. Overnight, firefighters built strong containment lines near Wrightwood, which allowed residents of that ski resort town to

repopulate the area on Saturday, he said. Residents of 7,000 other homes in the Cajon Pass area were still potentially in the path of the fire, which is burning in heavy brush, and they remained under evacuation orders, Lopez said. “We feel confident we can keep continuing this aggressive attack,” he said in a telephone interview. Nearly 2,700 firefighters and crew were battling the wildfire, their efforts amplified by more than two dozen water-dropping airplanes and helicopters, according to tracking website InciWeb. gov. Whee! Niagara Falls latest natural wonder to add zip line

NIAGARA Falls is the latest natural wonder to add a zip line, offering honeymooners and everyone else the chance to take an adrenaline-pumping plunge toward churning mist at speeds topping 40 mph. The elevated cable rides have evolved from a novel way to explore jungle canopies to almost necessary additions to lure tourists in the 21st century to established destinations. It’s a trend that’s exposed a rift between those who approach nature like contemplative monks and others who require an extreme, Indiana Jones-style experience. “We can’t make these into museums,” argued Tom Benson, co-founder and chief experience officer at WildPlay Element Parks, which built the Niagara Falls zip line. “How do you take a teenager and get them away from a game console to something that is going to capture their imagination?” The booming popularity of commercial zip lines over the past five years — there are at least 200 in the United States alone — means more people are experiencing nature in a way that would make Thoreau dizzy.

They can ride above the tree line at New River Gorge in West Virginia, over California’s Catalina Island, above lush Hawaiian landscapes and in view of Denali in Alaska. Catalina Island’s zip line makes stops for presentations at designated “eco-stations.” And riders of the Lake George zip line who were questioned after their rides said they had a new perspective on the natural wonder. The owner of the Lake George line, Ralph Macchio Sr. (father of the “Karate Kid” actor with the same name), said he got the idea for his attraction by gazing out from atop the majestic Adirondack peaks. “I thought, ‘Gee, if you could look at it like you were flying like a bird and get that view, that would be an Adirondack experience,’” Macchio said. “And that’s why I built the zip line.” (ap)

Rare Tyrannosaurus rex skull arrives at Seattle museum SEATTLE — Paleontologists with Seattle’s Burke Museum have unearthed the bones of a Tyrannosaurus rex that lived more than 66 million years ago, including a rare nearly complete 4-foot long skull. The remarkable discovery includes the dinosaur’s vertebrae, ribs, hips and lower jaw bones, and represents about 20 percent of the meat-eating predator. Several dozen scientists, volunteers, students and others worked over the summer to excavate the bones in the Hell Creek Formation in Montana, a site well known for fossil finds. The team later encased the massive skull in a protective plaster cast, lifted the 2,500-pound load onto a flatbed truck with the help of local Montana ranchers and drove it to Seattle. The skull was unloaded at the Burke Museum Thursday. The plaster-covered skull will be on display to the public for several weeks starting Saturday. Over the next year, paleontologists will painstakingly work on removing the rock around the skull. Scientists estimate the dinosaur is 85 percent the size of the largest T. rex discovered and, based on the size of its skull, lived about 15 years. They believe this T. rex roamed the earth in the late Cretaceous period. There are only 14 other nearly

complete T. rex skulls that have been found, the museum said. “We think the Tufts-Love Rex is going to be an iconic specimen for the Burke Museum and the state of Washington and will be a must-see for dinosaur researchers as well,” Gregory Wilson, a University of Washington biology professor and adjunct curator of vertebrate paleontology at the Burke Museum, said in a statement. He led the expedition team. The T. rex is named after two museum paleontology volunteers, Jason Love and Luke Tufts, who were combing for fossils when they came across large fossilized vertebrae sticking out of a rocky hillside last summer. The two were with a team collecting fossils as part of the Hell Creek Project, currently led by Wilson and started by Jack Horner, who discovered the world’s first dinosaur embryos, and Nathan Myhrvold, former Microsoft chief technology officer who is a Burke Museum research associate. The team knew the fossils belonged to a meat-eating dinosaur because of the large size and appearance of the bones, but they weren’t sure whether it was a T. rex. They didn’t have the chance to excavate further until this summer when they returned to the site. (ap)

The tipat-bantal war tradition is said to have begun with the arrival of Ki Kebo Iwa who came to Kapal village on assignment from the King of Bali at the time; Asta Sura Ratna Bhumi Banten to repair the village Purusadha Temple. However, Kapal village was suffering a famine at the time and a chaotic and pathetic condition was overwhelming the villagers. Ki Kebo Iwa eventually invoked instruction from the Creator by meditation at the Purusadha Temple. In his meditation, he received a revelation from Hyang Pasupati instructing the local residents to implement Aci Rah Pengangon or Aci Rare Angon by presenting

tipat-bantal. Both of these offerings served as the symbol of the source of life – the absences of which had caused the famine. Ever since then, this interesting ritual has been routinely performed with people gathering in front of Kapal Village’s Temple, where they divide themselves into two groups. Each group has tipat and bantal ‘weapons’ and after being instructed by the village authorities the two teams start throwing the rice patties at each other accompanied by the sound of Baleganjur gamelan music and the striking of the kulkul (traditional split wooden percussion instrument/tool). The battle begins in the middle courtyard of the temple and then moves to the outer courtyard and finally onto the street with tipat or bantal wizzing like bullets as they are thrown blindly by the partici-

pants in a trance like state. Many of the men engaged in battle are shirtless though they all wear customary clothing (headscarf, sarong and selempot ). Although the rice patties must be thrown northward and southward, some of the participants will ignorantly throw the tipat-bantal at those watching the spectacle, but everyone seems happy and excited about the whole thing. Interestingly, despite being hit rather hard by the tipat-bantal, no one is ever injured and in fact those who are struck laugh vivaciously. The war lasts for about 30 minutes and ends with the ‘warriors’ shaking hands in forgiveness and everyone clearing the area of rice patty debris with many people taking home bits of the ‘shrapnel’ to disperse in the moors and paddy fields.

HONG KONG - Arnold Schwarzenegger says being a bodybuilding champion, movie star and governor of California is not enough - he wants people to be fit too.

Schwarzenegger was unveiling the inaugural Arnold Classic Asia MultiSport Festival in Hong Kong. The event, which will run until Sunday, features a range of activities such as fencing, bodybuilding, rugby, yoga, weightlifting, arm wrestling, chess and solving Rubik’s cube puzzles. “To me, it was not only important to be a bodybuilding champion and to do movies and to be the governor, but also to use my power of influence to promote health and fitness all over the world,” Schwarzenegger told reporters. Due to its sacredness, they are advised to ask for permission first to school or workplace at least for ten days. Moreover, the usaba dangsil cannot be determined when it will be organized or within how many years. Although having been planned for ten years, but, in fact, if the deities do not allow, the usaba dangsil still cannot be implemented.

Philippines’ Duterte threatens to quit U.N. after drugs war censure

MANILA - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte railed against the United Nations on Sunday after it called for an end to the wave of killings unleashed by his war on drugs, saying he might leave the organisation and invite China and others to form a new one. Two U.N. human rights experts last week urged Manila to stop the extra-judicial executions and killings that have escalated since Duterte won the presidency on a promise to wipe out drugs. About 900 suspected drug traffickers have been killed since he came to power after winning the election on May 9. Duterte on Friday denied that the

government was responsible and in a middle-of-the-night news conference in his home town, Davao, said the deaths were not the work of the police and invited U.N. experts to investigate themselves. The news conference was broadcast by local media and the full version was posted on Facebook by GMA news. “I will prove to the world that

you are a very stupid expert,” he said, urging them to count not just the number of drug-related deaths but also the innocent lives lost to drugs. He then launched an attack on the United Nations and its members - including by inference Manila’s traditionally close ally, Washington - saying, it could not fulfil its own mandate but was “worrying about the bones of criminals piling up”. “I do not want to insult you. But maybe we’ll just have to decide to separate from the United Nations,” he said. “Why do you have to listen

to this stupid?” Criticising the U.N. for not doing enough to address hunger and terrorism and for not being able to do anything about Syria and Iraq and allowing big powers to bomb villages and kill innocent civilians, he said he would invite China and African nations to form another global organisation. “You now, United Nations, if you can say one bad thing about me, I can give you 10 (about you). I tell you, you are an inutile. Because if you are really true to your mandate, you could have stopped all these wars and killing.”

Asked about the possible consequences of his comments, he said: “What is ... repercussions? I don’t give a shit to them.” He said the United Nations should have acted according to protocol by sending someone such as a rapporteur to talk to him.
