Actor Anton Yelchin of ‘Star Trek’ films dies in freak accident
LOS ANGELES - Actor Anton Yelchin, best known for playing the young Russian starship navigator Chekov in the rebooted series of “Star Trek” movies, was killed on Sunday when accidentally crushed by his own car against a driveway wall, police said.
The Russian-born Yelchin, 27, died shortly after 1 a.m. after he apparently stepped out of his car in the steep driveway of his Los Angeles home and it rolled backwards, said Jenny Houser, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department. “The car pinned him against a brick wall and a security fence, and that trauma led to his death,” Houser said. Yelchin was due at a rehearsal, and when he did not show up friends went to his house and found him dead, Houser said. No foul play was suspected, but the accident was under investigation, she said. A number of actors and others who worked with Yelchin took to social media with tributes and expressions of dismay. “Still in shock. Rest in peace, Anton,” Justin Lin, who directed Yelchin in his third “Star Trek” movie, wrote on Twitter. “Your passion and enthusiasm will live on with everyone that had the pleasure of knowing you.” Yelchin was best known for assuming the role of Pavel Chekov, the young navigator on the bridge of the starship Enterprise, for the 2009 re-launch of the “Star Trek” film franchise and two sequels - 2013’s “Star Trek Into Darkness” and the upcoming “Star Trek Beyond,” set to open on July 22. The Chekov character was originally played on television in the 1960s “Star Trek” series, and in the first seven big-screen adaptations of the show, by Walter Koenig, who died in 1994. “I loved Anton Yelchin so much,” wrote John Cho, who played fellow Enterprise crew member Sulu in the new “Star Trek” films. “He was a true artist - curious,

LOS ANGELES — A brush fire that broke out Sunday near downtown Los Angeles threatened a densely populated, hilly neighborhood along a freeway as sizzling temperatures elevated fire danger across the West. Crews knocked down the blaze in the Silver Lake neighborhood after it damaged two homes, destroyed three shed-like structures, scorched yards and sent trees up in flames. Neighbors scrambled with garden hoses and buckets, while water-dropping helicopters and scores of firefighters chased embers and doused steep hillsides to keep the flames from spreading. The blaze only charred 8 acres, but it put urban residents on alert to the hot, dry conditions that have helped wildfires spread rapidly across more remote places from the California coast to New Mexico. A fire that has burned 12 square miles west of Santa Barbara stayed in check, but firefighters braced for the return of afternoon and evening gusts that fanned the flames earlier in the week, threatening hundreds of homes and leading to evacuations of popular coastal campgrounds. The fire was just over halfway contained.

This happens because it will give a lesson of character and noble spirit. When talking about solution to deterrent effect, it is when juvenile delinquency remains fairly reasonable. Fate of farmers at a crossroadswater crises poses serious threat The water crisis of recent years has hit the agricultural sector of the district of Bangli quite severely with crop failure becoming increasingly common. Many people are asking: “what then is the fate of farmers in the area?”

Aside from its pleasantly cool climate, the district of Bangli is also famous for its agricultural sector, particularly irrigated rice cultivation. In the 1990s, abundant crops still provided the primary source of income for most people here. However, for the last five years, a number of subak areas have been hit with water shortages. This dark issue has forced many farmers to look for others lines of work, that are not necessarily more promising. One farmer at Subak Bangkiang Sidem, Bangbang village, Tembuku, named I Made Arnata, explained that he has been unable to grow rice for the last two years so he has been planting other crops such as corn and beans in order to survive. The crop yields are slight and losses are common. Middlemen to whom he tries to sell his crops often scoff at his wares. Arnata is confused about whether he should stick to farming or look for other ways of earning a living. “If I switch to another sector, success is uncertain, but the frequent water shortages make farming a very risky business”, he said.
The water crises has forced many farmers to give up on their lands that they have been cultivating for years and look for other work. An irrigation canal repair program has been launched in an attempt to deal with the water crisis, however farmers are not smiling yet. “Irrigation channels have been repaired, but the water flow is still minimal, maybe because the upstream springs are drying up”, said Arnata. The difficulties of earning a living from the agricultural sector is also being experienced by farmers at Subak Pengiangan in Pengiangan Kangin village, Susut. Farmer, I Wayan Suta for example said that his rice harvest have been nil in recent years and that he has been forced to buy rice to eat. “The water crisis has caused famers to face a dilemma having to choose between continuing to struggle in agriculture or looking for another job”, said Suta. Head of the Bangli Agriculture and Forestry Agency, Wayan Tagel Sujana confirmed the fact that there is a water crisis going and that many farmers -especially older farmers, are facing a serious dilemma. The government has taken the initiative of improving primary and secondary irrigation canals in an attempt to deal with the issue, he explained. “The government continues to strive to maintain the agricultural sector as a primary source of income and a number of programs have been launched in the subaks”, he said. Paul Allen’s space company nears debut of world’s biggest plane
MOJAVE - A space launch company bankrolled by Microsoft Corp co-founder Paul Allen intends to compete with space entrepreneurs and industry stalwarts by launching satellites into orbit from the world’s biggest airplane. Stratolaunch Systems, a unit of Allen’s privately owned Vulcan Aerospace, last week gave a small group of reporters a first look at the nearly finished aircraft. With a wingspan of 385 feet (117 m), the six-engine plane will be larger than Howard Hughes’ 1947 H-4 Hercules, known as the “Spruce Goose,” and the Antonov An-225, a Soviet-era cargo plane originally built to transport the Buran space shuttle that is currently the world’s largest aircraft. Allen’s move coincides with a surge of new businesses planning to sell Internet access, Earth imagery, climate data and other services from networks of hundreds of satellites in low-altitude orbits around Earth. But his vision is different from what Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin, Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic and other companies have for building com-
mercial highways to space. Musk’s goal is to fly people to Mars. Bezos is developing lowcost, reusable rockets with the goal of moving energy-intensive, heavy industry off Earth. Branson is focused on space tourism and a small satellite launcher. The advantage of Allen’s approach will be the ability to position the plane so satellites can be directly delivered into very precise orbits and do so quickly, without launch range scheduling issues and weather-related delays, Chuck Beames, who oversees Allen’s space ventures, said. The Stratolaunch plane looks nothing like its behemoth predecessor aircraft. Rather than transporting heavy cargo inside a main body section, Stratolaunch is a twin-fuselage craft that incorporates engines, landing gear, avionics and other parts from a pair of Boeing 747 jets coupled with a
frame, wings and skin handmade of lightweight composites. Designed and built by Northrop Grumman Corp’s Scaled Composites, the plane is similar in form and function to Scaled’s aircraft built to ferry spaceships into the air and release them for independent rocket rides beyond the atmosphere, a service Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic intends to offer to paying passengers. Stratolaunch plans a similar service for satellites, particularly the low-Earth orbiting multi-hundred member constellations under development by companies including SpaceX and Google’s Terra Bella to provide internet access, Earth imagery and other data. But Stratolaunch will offer quick and precise satellite positioning, a service that will set it apart from competitors. These satellite networks, based on low-cost spacecraft, are the fastest-growing segment of the global satellite industry which reported more than $208 billion in revenue 2015, according to a Satellite Industry Association report. BEIJING — A Chinese supercomputer has topped a list of the world’s fastest computers for the seventh straight year — and for the first time the winner uses only Chinese-designed processors instead of U.S. technology. The announcement Monday is a new milestone for Chinese supercomputer development and a further erosion of past U.S. dominance of the field. Last year’s Chinese winner in the TOP500 ranking maintained by researchers in the United States and Germany slipped to No. 2, followed by a computer at the U.S. government’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. Also this year, China displaced the United States for the first time as the country with the most supercomputers in the top 500. China had 167 systems and the United States had 165. Japan was a distant No. 3 with 29 systems. Supercomputers are one of a series of technologies targeted by China’s ruling Communist Party for development and have received heavy financial support. Such systems are used for weather forecasting, designing nuclear weapons, analyzing oilfields and other specialized purposes. “Considering that just 10 years ago, China claimed a mere 28 systems on the list, with none ranked in the top 30, the nation has come further and faster than any other country in the history of supercomputing,” the TOP500 organizers said in a statement. This year’s champion is the Sunway TaihuLight at the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi, west of Shanghai, according to TOP500. It was developed by China’s National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineer-
ing & Technology using entirely Chinese-designed processors. The TaihuLight is capable of 93 petaflops, or quadrillion calculations per second, according to TOP500. It is intended for use in engineering and research including climate, weather, life sciences, advanced manufacturing and data analytics. Its top speed is about five times that of Oak Ridge’s Titan, which uses Cray, NVIDIA and Opteron technology. Other countries with computers in the Top 10 were Japan, Switzerland, Germany and Saudi Arabia. The TaihuLight is due to be introduced Tuesday at the International Supercomputing Conference in Frankfurt by the director of the Wuxi center, Guangwen Yang. “As the first No. 1 system of China that is completely based on homegrown processors, the Sunway TaihuLight system demonstrates the significant progress that China has made in the domain of designing and manufacturing large-scale computation systems,” Yang was quoted as saying in the TOP500 statement. The TaihuLight uses Chinesedeveloped ShenWei processors, “ending any remaining speculation that China would have to rely on Western technology to compete effectively in the upper echelons of supercomputing,” TOP500 said in a statement. The second-fastest computer, the Tianhe-2 at the National Supercomputer Center in the southern city of Guangzhou, is capable of 33 petaflops. It uses chips made by Intel Corp. Among countries with the most computers on the top 500 list, Germany was in fourth place with 26 systems, France was next with 18, followed by Britain with 12. (ap)

In the program having taken place since this year, the PKK is given coaching every week at village office. Armed with the commitment to save the environment, the creative hands of the PKK can create a number of products, such as bags, dust bin, purses and hats.
The quality is no doubt. Some of them have promising selling value. Headman of Peninjoan, Dewa Nyoman Tagel, explained that before the recycling program is rolled out, the plastic waste was just sorted. However, this effort experienced a problem where collector always took it late. As a result, the waste was piling up. “On that account, we at local village take an initiative to apply this program. Government funding is also available so that it can help,” he said recently. This program, said Tagel, received a support and guidance from the Waste Bank at Tamanbali village having implemented the same effort in advance. It will also help market the products having a selling value. “Besides, the program gets the support from the Bangli Environment Agency (BLH). Hopefully, this could sustain and become a habit in the community,” he said. In the meantime, the Head of the BLH Bangli, I Made Alit Parwata, admitted that plastic waste is currently becoming a serious problem. All this time, the handling is mostly done by the government and waste bank. However, it does not reach throughout rural areas. The agency greatly supports the efforts made by Peninjoan village. Hopefully, it can be an example for another village. “These things must be developed and do not only rely on the government,” he said. (sos)

This woman always selling on the beach every day admitted to feel anxious these days because the waves unexpectedly come to confront her food stall. “Well, for the time being the merchandise of this stall is forced to be relocated to the location of pot plants which happen to be empty,” she said. According to her, the damages to paving blocks of pathway have occurred since last week. Until now, it has not been repaired. The paving project is deemed redundant considering that it does not stand to
the brunt of beach waves. The big waves cause the merchants previously selling in the west of Watu Klotok Temple to flee to a safer location in the north. In the meantime, a visitor, Ni Made Ariani, 61, from Jelantik Kuribatu hamlet, Tojan, looked shaking her head when witnessing the severe damages to revetment of Klotok fitted with the paving blocks. According to her, the damages to the paving block happened because the workmanship was not good. “Installation of the paving blocks is done without any concrete mixture. Then, installation process on the beach should have specified in accordance with the capability to hold the brunt of sea waves so that the project will not be in vain,” he said. (dwa)

Tirta Sudamala Temple
BANGLI - Tirta Sudamala Temple is located in Sedit hamlet, Bebalang, Bangli. This temple is already well known by Balinese people who often visit the temple on the full moon, the new moon as well as major holidays such as Banyupinaruh. There are twelve water spouts that are used by worshippers to purify themselves with the temple water. Tirta Sudamala Temple is close to the center of Bangli, and is easy to access. Since the temple is located in the bank of the Sangsang river, worshippers visiting the temple will often descend numerous staits to pruify themselves in Tirta Sudamala as well. Hamlet chief of Sedit, Gusti Putu Kariyadnya, recently gave a brief explanation of the origins ot Tirta Sudamala Temple. An old inscription says that the establishment of the temple is related to the pilgrimage of Ida Pedanda Hender who, upon the
request of the king of Bangli, went looking for a holy spring to take water from for a grandioase ceremony that was to take place. Ida Pedanda Hender started his pilgrimage from the south and sat in a plcae overgrown by many sambng plants to meditate about where he should go to find the stpring. During his meditation, a huge pig appeared. The pig proceeded to loosen the soil and formed a mound resembling a hill, in an attempt to distract Ida Pedanda Hender from his meditation. One of Ida Pendanda Hender’s companions however saw what the pig was doing and shooed the pig away. Because the mound abandoned by the huge pig resembled a hill, Ida Pedanda Hender then named the location Buung Hill. In fact, thanks to the Tirta Sudamala, the local community finally managed to keep the monkeys from invading their paddy fields. As promised, the community then established a temple called Tirta Sudamala Temple. Until now, Tirta Sudamala Temple is supported by the community of Sedit hamle. Hundreds of turtle hatchlings released on Penimbangan Beach
SINGARAJA - One hundred turtle hatchlings were released on Penimbangan Beach, Baktiseraga village, Buleleng, Sunday afternoon (Jun. 19). The hatchlings are contribution of a third party to the community group caring for turtle of Penimbangan Beach. This turtle hatchling is linked to the Penimbangan Saves the Sea Turtle 2016.
In addition to releasing turtle hatchlings into sea, a number of sea almond trees were planted along the east side of Penimbangan Beach. The no less interesting is boat painting by Dient Cartoon, Dony and Dedy, as well as digital art painting auction event entitled ‘Save the Turtle’ by Dient Cartoon used to grace the first activity. Committee chairman of the Penimbangan Saves the Sea Turtle 2016, Putu Dedy Yastika, on the sidelines of social activity said that the recent effort to preserve Penimbangan Beach needs to be raised. This happens because the population of green turtle, coral reef and dolphin on the beach requires the participation of all elements to provide protection. Moreover, recently green turtle has been found burying their eggs for three times on the beach. This shows if the beach is rich in rare marine animal population. On this condition, Dedy tried to arouse the awareness and participation of all the societal elements to work together in making positive contributions to the sustainability of Penimbangan Beach. “We release turtle hatchlings posing the assistance of third party to stimulate the awareness of all of us in preserving this beach being known to be rich in green turtle or reef and dolphin,” he said. Related to the planting of sea almond seedling, Dedy said that coastal areas these days seem less dense. It happens because the beach is hit by abrasion lately followed up with the construction of revetment to protect the beach from the waves, while the hibiscus trees were cut down to facilitate the project. To add trees on mainland, in this event was coupled with the planting of sea almond trees. From this tree seedling, he hoped that next few years the coastal areas will turn dense, so as to increase the convenience of
travelers making recreation to the location. “We want this coastal area to turn lush as ever before, so that we plant these sea almond trees. Besides, together with local fishermen we do cleanup on the beach from littering marine debris,” he explained. In separate location, the Regent of Buleleng Putu Agus Suradnyana (PAS) welcomed the effort to preserve the beach by fishermen and community groups of Baktiseraga village. This effort is expected to be followed by other villages having beach potential. To support the conservation efforts for turtle, reef or other problems, the government promised to be ready to facilitate them through some aids or other programs. “This is in line with my desire where the coastal preservation must be well maintained first. After that, it will be promoted as a tourist area. Hopefully, other villages can do the same, so that our oceans will remain stable and could provide livelihoods for community,” he said. The Penimbangan Saves the Sea Turtle 2016 was also coupled with the performance of Bondres gag and turtle fragmentary show by fishermen together with customary village youth of Baktiseraga. BANJARMASIN - The Batulicin Police have arrested two of the six child abuse suspects, who had inflicted stab wounds and sharp force trauma on a victim. “We have arrested two suspects, while four others are still on the run, but we will continue our search for them,” spokesperson Bripka M. Sahidin stated on behalf of Batulicin Police Chief Setiawan A. Malik in Batulicin on Monday. Following the investigations conducted by field officers, both suspects were arrested at different times and locations, he added. The first suspect has been identified as 38-year-old Hasanuddin a.k.a. Hasan Tato a.k.a. Suanang Janggut from Tanah Bumbu District. He was taken into custody on
Saturday, June 18, at 11:30 p.m. local time in the Banjarbaru Kota area. The other suspect is 18-yearold Fajrin Amrullah from Tanah Bumbu District. He was arrested on Sunday, June 19, at around 10:30 p.m. local at a Sports Center in Batulicin. “We are on the lookout for the rest of the suspects known as Utuh, Jumri a.k.a. Ijum, Imul, and Riski, all of whom have been included in the suspect search list,” he noted. The police continue to pursue developments in this case until they arrest the remaining suspects after 17-year-old M. Andyan Subakti from Kusan Hilir Regency reported the incident in which he suffered stab wounds to the back and temples
as well as a sharp force trauma to his abdomen. Suspects Hasan Tato and Fajrin are now under the custody of the authorities. The police have also seized two knives used to hurt the victim as evidences. According to the results of the investigation, both suspects have confessed to their crime on May 29 in Batulicin and are charged with child abuse. The arrest of these suspects was the result of the efforts of the nations police force to enforce the law on child protection. Record 65.3 million people displaced, often face barriers - UNHCR
GENEVA - A record 65.3 million people were uprooted worldwide last year, many of them fleeing wars only to face walls, tougher laws and xenophobia as they reach borders, the United Nations refugee agency said on Monday. The figure, which jumped from 59.5 million in 2014 and by 50 percent in five years, means that 1 in every 113 people on the planet is now a refugee, asylum-seeker or internally displaced in a home country. Fighting in Syria, Afghanistan, Burundi and South Sudan has driven the latest exodus, bringing the total number of refugees to 21.3 million, half of them children, the UNHCR said in its “Global Trends” report marking World Refugee Day. “The refugees and migrants crossing the Mediterranean and arriving on the shores of Europe, the message that they have carried is that if you don’t solve problems, problems will come to you,” U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi told a news brief-
ing. “It’s painful that it has taken so long for people in the rich countries to understand that,” he said. “We need action, political action to stop conflicts, that would be the most important prevention of refugee flows.” A record 2 million new asylum claims were lodged in industrialised countries in 2015, the report said. Nearly 100,000 were children unaccompanied or separated from their families, a three-fold rise on 2014 and a historic high. Germany, where one in three applicants was Syrian, led with 441,900 claims, followed by the United States with 172,700, many of them fleeing gang and drugrelated violence in Mexico and Central America.

Sayeeda Warsi, a former minister and co-chair of the ruling Conservative Party, accused “Leave” campaigners of wrongly suggesting that staying in the EU would lead to vast numbers of Turks and Syrian refugees coming to Britain in the near future. “Are we prepared to tell lies, to spread hate and xenophobia just to win a campaign? For me that’s a step too far,” she told The Times newspaper. “I don’t want the Leave camp to be running this country and I don’t want the messages coming out of that camp to form the basis of the kind of Britain that I want to live in and to bring my kids up in,” she said. Speculation about “biscotto” games — where a certain result suits both teams — is a concern at most tournaments, but could be an extra risk with the 24-team format at Euro 2016. Teams playing on Wednesday will be able to work out how finishing first, second, or third in a group will decide their opponent in the round of 16. Still, UEFA competitions director Giorgio Marchetti said Monday there is “little room for speculation” at Euro 2016. “We think we are pretty safe because there is a need by many teams to win,” Marchetti said. “I am not overly worried.” UEFA expanded its marquee national team event from 16 teams to a 24-team format where only four of the six third-place teams advance to create a natural tournament bracket. A five-step tiebreaker process ranks the third-place teams, including Albania, whose Group A program finished Sunday but must wait until at least after the early-evening games on Tuesday before knowing its fate. LILLE - Football kit manufacturer Puma is investigating why the shirts of at least four Swiss players got ripped in Sunday’s goalless draw against France at Euro 2016. The game, which saw Switzerland join France into the knockout phase, was not unduly rough or dirty, yet three times in the first half Swiss players had to go to the sidelines to swap their torn tops. “Seeing our shirts being ripped in a match last night was the first time we have experienced such an issue. Five PUMA teams have played 10 games in this tournament without such problems,” the German manufacturer said in a statement. “Our product people are currently investigating the shirt material. We will provide a further update when we have one.” Rival manufacturer Adidas, who provides kit to nine of the 24 teams competing in France, told Reuters that suppliers usually provide three shirts per player, per game. “The standard usage for these shirts will be a player wears one in the first half, another in the second half with a third being saved as a spare, should it be needed on the pitch, or utilised as a giveaway item,” spokesperson Katja Schreiber said in an email. “Every shirt worn during the tournament will carry unique match day customisation, hence the need to provide shirts on a match-by-match basis.” Asked if it was possible for a player to run out of shirts during a game, Schreiber referred back to football’s European governing body. “This is a process that is put in place by UEFA ... although federations have a standard approach to utilising these jerseys, they can be used in any way required during the course of 90 minutes,” she said. Record 65.3 million people displaced, often face barriers - UNHCR
GENEVA - A record 65.3 million people were uprooted worldwide last year, many of them fleeing wars only to face walls, tougher laws and xenophobia as they reach borders, the United Nations refugee agency said on Monday. The figure, which jumped from 59.5 million in 2014 and by 50 percent in five years, means that 1 in every 113 people on the planet is now a refugee, asylum-seeker or internally displaced in a home country. Fighting in Syria, Afghanistan, Burundi and South Sudan has driven the latest exodus, bringing the total number of refugees to 21.3 million, half of them children, the UNHCR said in its “Global Trends” report marking World Refugee Day. “The refugees and migrants crossing the Mediterranean and arriving on the shores of Europe, the message that they have carried is that if you don’t solve problems, problems will come to you,” U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi told a news brief-
ing. “It’s painful that it has taken so long for people in the rich countries to understand that,” he said. “We need action, political action to stop conflicts, that would be the most important prevention of refugee flows.” A record 2 million new asylum claims were lodged in industrialised countries in 2015, the report said. Nearly 100,000 were children unaccompanied or separated from their families, a three-fold rise on 2014 and a historic high. Germany, where one in three applicants was Syrian, led with 441,900 claims, followed by the United States with 172,700, many of them fleeing gang and drugrelated violence in Mexico and Central America.

British politician quits Brexit camp, citing “lies and xenophobia” LONDON - A senior British politician on Monday accused those campaigning for Britain to leave the European Union of spreading lies, hate and xenophobia, saying she was switching to the “Remain” camp. Britons will cast their votes on Thursday in a referendum on whether to quit the 28-member bloc, a choice with far-reaching economic and political consequences for Britain and the rest of the continent. Sayeeda Warsi, a former minister and co-chair of the ruling Conservative Party, accused “Leave” campaigners of wrongly suggesting that staying in the EU would lead to vast numbers of Turks and Syrian refugees coming to Britain in the near future. “Are we prepared to tell lies, to spread hate and xenophobia just to win a campaign? For me that’s a step too far,” she told The Times newspaper. “I don’t want the Leave camp to be running this country and I don’t want the messages coming out of that camp to form the basis of the kind of Britain that I want to live in and to bring my kids up in,” she said. The official Vote Leave organisation was dismissive, with a spokesman saying they did not remember Warsi joining their campaign and were puzzled by her announcement. Warsi had not played a prominent role in the “Leave” campaign but said she had long made the case for quitting the EU. A new wildfire that broke out Sunday forced the evacuation of about 75 people from a tiny town in the California desert near the Mexico border. It had surged to over 2 square miles amid triple-digit temperatures near the town of Potrero, a ranching community just a few miles north of Tecate, Mexico, and about 40 miles southeast of San Diego. In New Mexico, a 28-squaremile fire that erupted last week and destroyed 24 homes in the Manzano Mountains south of Albuquerque was largely uncontained. But higher humidity overnight allowed crews to strengthen lines around the fire and keep a lookout for hot spots where flames could jump the line. In eastern Arizona, a fire that has

BANJARMASIN - The Batulicin Police have arrested two of the six child abuse suspects, who had inflicted stab wounds and sharp force trauma on a victim. “We have arrested two suspects, while four others are still on the run, but we will continue our search for them,” spokesperson Bripka M. Sahidin stated on behalf of Batulicin Police Chief Setiawan A. Malik in Batulicin on Monday. Following the investigations conducted by field officers, both suspects were arrested at different times and locations, he added. The first suspect has been identified as 38-year-old Hasanuddin a.k.a. Hasan Tato a.k.a. Suanang Janggut from Tanah Bumbu District. He was taken into custody on
Saturday, June 18, at 11:30 p.m. local time in the Banjarbaru Kota area. The other suspect is 18-yearold Fajrin Amrullah from Tanah Bumbu District. He was arrested on Sunday, June 19, at around 10:30 p.m. local at a Sports Center in Batulicin. “We are on the lookout for the rest of the suspects known as Utuh, Jumri a.k.a. Ijum, Imul, and Riski, all of whom have been included in the suspect search list,” he noted. The police continue to pursue developments in this case until they arrest the remaining suspects after 17-year-old M. Andyan Subakti from Kusan Hilir Regency reported the incident in which he suffered stab wounds to the back and temples
as well as a sharp force trauma to his abdomen. Suspects Hasan Tato and Fajrin are now under the custody of the authorities. The police have also seized two knives used to hurt the victim as evidences. According to the results of the investigation, both suspects have confessed to their crime on May 29 in Batulicin and are charged with child abuse. The arrest of these suspects was the result of the efforts of the nations police force to enforce the law on child protection. Tirta Sudamala Temple
BANGLI - Tirta Sudamala Temple is located in Sedit hamlet, Bebalang, Bangli. This temple is already well known by Balinese people who often visit the temple on the full moon, the new moon as well as major holidays such as Banyupinaruh. There are twelve water spouts that are used by worshippers to purify themselves with the temple water. Tirta Sudamala Temple is close to the center of Bangli, and is easy to access. Since the temple is located in the bank of the Sangsang river, worshippers visiting the temple will often descend numerous staits to pruify themselves in Tirta Sudamala as well. Hamlet chief of Sedit, Gusti Putu Kariyadnya, recently gave a brief explanation of the origins ot Tirta Sudamala Temple. An old inscription says that the establishment of the temple is related to the pilgrimage of Ida Pedanda Hender who, upon the
request of the king of Bangli, went looking for a holy spring to take water from for a grandioase ceremony that was to take place. Ida Pedanda Hender started his pilgrimage from the south and sat in a plcae overgrown by many sambng plants to meditate about where he should go to find the stpring. During his meditation, a huge pig appeared. The pig proceeded to loosen the soil and formed a mound resembling a hill, in an attempt to distract Ida Pedanda Hender from his meditation. One of Ida Pendanda Hender’s companions however saw what the pig was doing and shooed the pig away. Because the mound abandoned by the huge pig resembled a hill, Ida Pedanda Hender then named the location Buung Hill. In his meditation Ida Pedanda Hender however did manage to find the location of the spring that he was looking for. He then resumed his pilgrimage northwards until he

Hundreds of turtle hatchlings released on Penimbangan Beach
SINGARAJA - One hundred turtle hatchlings were released on Penimbangan Beach, Baktiseraga village, Buleleng, Sunday afternoon (Jun. 19). The hatchlings are contribution of a third party to the community group caring for turtle of Penimbangan Beach. This turtle hatchling is linked to the Penimbangan Saves the Sea Turtle 2016.
In addition to releasing turtle hatchlings into sea, a number of sea almond trees were planted along the east side of Penimbangan Beach. The no less interesting is boat painting by Dient Cartoon, Dony and Dedy, as well as digital art painting auction event entitled ‘Save the Turtle’ by Dient Cartoon used to grace the first activity. Committee chairman of the Penimbangan Saves the Sea Turtle 2016, Putu Dedy Yastika, on the sidelines of social activity said that the recent effort to preserve Penimbangan Beach needs to be raised. This happens because the population of green turtle, coral reef and dolphin on the beach requires the participation of all elements to provide protection. Moreover, recently green turtle has been found burying their eggs for three times on the beach. This shows if the beach is rich in rare marine animal population. On this condition, Dedy tried to arouse the awareness and participation of all the societal elements to work together in making positive contributions to the sustainability of Penimbangan Beach. “We release turtle hatchlings posing the assistance of third party to stimulate the awareness of all of us in preserving this beach being known to be rich in green turtle or reef and dolphin,” he said. Related to the planting of sea almond seedling, Dedy said that coastal areas these days seem less dense. It happens because the beach is hit by abrasion lately followed up with the construction of revetment to protect the beach from the waves, while the hibiscus trees were cut down to facilitate the project. To add trees on mainland, in this event was coupled with the planting of sea almond trees. From this tree seedling, he hoped that next few years the coastal areas will turn dense, so as to increase the convenience of
travelers making recreation to the location. “We want this coastal area to turn lush as ever before, so that we plant these sea almond trees. Besides, together with local fishermen we do cleanup on the beach from littering marine debris,” he explained. In separate location, the Regent of Buleleng Putu Agus Suradnyana (PAS) welcomed the effort to preserve the beach by fishermen and community groups of Baktiseraga village. This effort is expected to be followed by other villages having beach potential. To support the conservation efforts for turtle, reef or other problems, the government promised to be ready to facilitate them through some aids or other programs. “This is in line with my desire where the coastal preservation must be well maintained first. After that, it will be promoted as a tourist area. Hopefully, other villages can do the same, so that our oceans will remain stable and could provide livelihoods for community,” he said. The Penimbangan Saves the Sea Turtle 2016 was also coupled with the performance of Bondres gag and turtle fragmentary show by fishermen together with customary village youth of Baktiseraga. Paul Allen’s space company nears debut of world’s biggest plane
MOJAVE - A space launch company bankrolled by Microsoft Corp co-founder Paul Allen intends to compete with space entrepreneurs and industry stalwarts by launching satellites into orbit from the world’s biggest airplane. Stratolaunch Systems, a unit of Allen’s privately owned Vulcan Aerospace, last week gave a small group of reporters a first look at the nearly finished aircraft. With a wingspan of 385 feet (117 m), the six-engine plane will be larger than Howard Hughes’ 1947 H-4 Hercules, known as the “Spruce Goose,” and the Antonov An-225, a Soviet-era cargo plane originally built to transport the Buran space shuttle that is currently the world’s largest aircraft. Allen’s move coincides with a surge of new businesses planning to sell Internet access, Earth imagery, climate data and other services from networks of hundreds of satellites in low-altitude orbits around Earth. But his vision is different from what Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin, Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic and other companies have for building com-
mercial highways to space. Musk’s goal is to fly people to Mars. Bezos is developing lowcost, reusable rockets with the goal of moving energy-intensive, heavy industry off Earth. Branson is focused on space tourism and a small satellite launcher. The advantage of Allen’s approach will be the ability to position the plane so satellites can be directly delivered into very precise orbits and do so quickly, without launch range scheduling issues and weather-related delays, Chuck Beames, who oversees Allen’s space ventures, said. The Stratolaunch plane looks nothing like its behemoth predecessor aircraft. Rather than transporting heavy cargo inside a main body section, Stratolaunch is a twin-fuselage craft that incorporates engines, landing gear, avionics and other parts from a pair of Boeing 747 jets coupled with a
frame, wings and skin handmade of lightweight composites. Designed and built by Northrop Grumman Corp’s Scaled Composites, the plane is similar in form and function to Scaled’s aircraft built to ferry spaceships into the air and release them for independent rocket rides beyond the atmosphere, a service Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic intends to offer to paying passengers. Stratolaunch plans a similar service for satellites, particularly the low-Earth orbiting multi-hundred member constellations under development by companies including SpaceX and Google’s Terra Bella to provide internet access, Earth imagery and other data. But Stratolaunch will offer quick and precise satellite positioning, a service that will set it apart from competitors. These satellite networks, based on low-cost spacecraft, are the fastest-growing segment of the global satellite industry which reported more than $208 billion in revenue 2015, according to a Satellite Industry Association report. BEIJING — A Chinese supercomputer has topped a list of the world’s fastest computers for the seventh straight year — and for the first time the winner uses only Chinese-designed processors instead of U.S. technology. The announcement Monday is a new milestone for Chinese supercomputer development and a further erosion of past U.S. dominance of the field. Last year’s Chinese winner in the TOP500 ranking maintained by researchers in the United States and Germany slipped to No. 2, followed by a computer at the U.S. government’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. Also this year, China displaced the United States for the first time as the country with the most supercomputers in the top 500. China had 167 systems and the United States had 165. Japan was a distant No. 3 with 29 systems. Supercomputers are one of a series of technologies targeted by China’s ruling Communist Party for development and have received heavy financial support. Such systems are used for weather forecasting, designing nuclear weapons, analyzing oilfields and other specialized purposes. “Considering that just 10 years ago, China claimed a mere 28 systems on the list, with none ranked in the top 30, the nation has come further and faster than any other country in the history of supercomputing,” the TOP500 organizers said in a statement. This year’s champion is the Sunway TaihuLight at the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi, west of Shanghai, according to TOP500. It was developed by China’s National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineer-
ing & Technology using entirely Chinese-designed processors. The TaihuLight is capable of 93 petaflops, or quadrillion calculations per second, according to TOP500. It is intended for use in engineering and research including climate, weather, life sciences, advanced manufacturing and data analytics. Its top speed is about five times that of Oak Ridge’s Titan, which uses Cray, NVIDIA and Opteron technology. Other countries with computers in the Top 10 were Japan, Switzerland, Germany and Saudi Arabia. The TaihuLight is due to be introduced Tuesday at the International Supercomputing Conference in Frankfurt by the director of the Wuxi center, Guangwen Yang. “As the first No. 1 system of China that is completely based on homegrown processors, the Sunway TaihuLight system demonstrates the significant progress that China has made in the domain of designing and manufacturing large-scale computation systems,” Yang was quoted as saying in the TOP500 statement. The TaihuLight uses Chinesedeveloped ShenWei processors, “ending any remaining speculation that China would have to rely on Western technology to compete effectively in the upper echelons of supercomputing,” TOP500 said in a statement. The second-fastest computer, the Tianhe-2 at the National Supercomputer Center in the southern city of Guangzhou, is capable of 33 petaflops. It uses chips made by Intel Corp. Among countries with the most computers on the top 500 list, Germany was in fourth place with 26 systems, France was next with 18, followed by Britain with 12. (ap)

Armed with the commitment to save the environment, the creative hands of the PKK can create a number of products, such as bags, dust bin, purses and hats.
The quality is no doubt. Some of them have promising selling value. Headman of Peninjoan, Dewa Nyoman Tagel, explained that before the recycling program is rolled out, the plastic waste was just sorted. However, this effort experienced a problem where collector always took it late. As a result, the waste was piling up. “On that account, we at local village take an initiative to apply this program. Government funding is also available so that it can help,” he said recently. This program, said Tagel, received a support and guidance from the Waste Bank at Tamanbali village having implemented the same effort in advance. It will also help market the products having a selling value. “Besides, the program gets the support from the Bangli Environment Agency (BLH). Hopefully, this could sustain and become a habit in the community,” he said. In the meantime, the Head of the BLH Bangli, I Made Alit Parwata, admitted that plastic waste is currently becoming a serious problem. All this time, the handling is mostly done by the government and waste bank. However, it does not reach throughout rural areas. The agency greatly supports the efforts made by Peninjoan village. Hopefully, it can be an example for another village. “These things must be developed and do not only rely on the government,” he said. (sos)

Paving block on the Watu Klotok Beach stretching from the front area of Watu Klotok Temple westward about one km has suffered severe damages. In the meantime, a visitor, Ni Made Ariani, 61, from Jelantik Kuribatu hamlet, Tojan, looked shaking her head when witnessing the severe damages to revetment of Klotok fitted with the paving blocks. According to her, the damages to the paving block happened because the workmanship was not good. “Installation of the paving blocks is done without any concrete mixture. Aside from its pleasantly cool climate, the district of Bangli is also famous for its agricultural sector, particularly irrigated rice cultivation. In the 1990s, abundant crops still provided the primary source of income for most people here. However, for the last five years, a number of subak areas have been hit with water shortages. This dark issue has forced many farmers to look for others lines of work, that are not necessarily more promising. One farmer at Subak Bangkiang Sidem, Bangbang village, Tembuku, named I Made Arnata, explained that he has been unable to grow rice for the last two years so he has been planting other crops such as corn and beans in order to survive. The crop yields are slight and losses are common. Middlemen to whom he tries to sell his crops often scoff at his wares. Arnata is confused about whether he should stick to farming or look for other ways of earning a living. “If I switch to another sector, success is uncertain, but the frequent water shortages make farming a very risky business”, he said.
The water crises has forced many farmers to give up on their lands that they have been cultivating for years and look for other work. An irrigation canal repair program has been launched in an attempt to deal with the water crisis, however farmers are not smiling yet. “Irrigation channels have been repaired, but the water flow is still minimal, maybe because the upstream springs are drying up”, said Arnata. The difficulties of earning a living from the agricultural sector is also being experienced by farmers at Subak Pengiangan in Pengiangan Kangin village, Susut. Farmer, I Wayan Suta for example said that his rice harvest have been nil in recent years and that he has been forced to buy rice to eat. “The water crisis has caused famers to face a dilemma having to choose between continuing to struggle in agriculture or looking for another job”, said Suta. Head of the Bangli Agriculture and Forestry Agency, Wayan Tagel Sujana confirmed the fact that there is a water crisis going and that many farmers -especially older farmers, are facing a serious dilemma. The government has taken the initiative of improving primary and secondary irrigation canals in an attempt to deal with the issue, he explained. “The government continues to strive to maintain the agricultural sector as a primary source of income and a number of programs have been launched in the subaks”, he said. Actor Anton Yelchin of ‘Star Trek’ films dies in freak accident
LOS ANGELES - Actor Anton Yelchin, best known for playing the young Russian starship navigator Chekov in the rebooted series of “Star Trek” movies, was killed on Sunday when accidentally crushed by his own car against a driveway wall, police said.
The Russian-born Yelchin, 27, died shortly after 1 a.m. after he apparently stepped out of his car in the steep driveway of his Los Angeles home and it rolled backwards, said Jenny Houser, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department. “The car pinned him against a brick wall and a security fence, and that trauma led to his death,” Houser said. Yelchin was due at a rehearsal, and when he did not show up friends went to his house and found him dead, Houser said. No foul play was suspected, but the accident was under investigation, she said. A number of actors and others who worked with Yelchin took to social media with tributes and expressions of dismay. “Still in shock. Fire scares Los Angeles as larger blazes burn across West
LOS ANGELES — A brush fire that broke out Sunday near downtown Los Angeles threatened a densely populated, hilly neighborhood along a freeway as sizzling temperatures elevated fire danger across the West. Crews knocked down the blaze in the Silver Lake neighborhood after it damaged two homes, destroyed three shed-like structures, scorched yards and sent trees up in flames. Neighbors scrambled with garden hoses and buckets, while water-dropping helicopters and scores of firefighters chased embers and doused steep hillsides to keep the flames from spreading. The blaze only charred 8 acres, but it put urban residents on alert to the hot, dry conditions that have helped wildfires spread rapidly across more remote places from the California coast to New Mexico. A fire that has burned 12 square miles west of Santa Barbara stayed in check, but firefighters braced for the return of afternoon and evening gusts that fanned the flames earlier in the week, threatening hundreds of homes and leading to evacuations of popular coastal campgrounds. The fire was just over halfway contained.
