Monet sister paintings reunited in US for first time WASHINGTON - For the first time since they were painted more than a century ago, two oil paintings of Claude Monet’s garden in Vetheuil have been reunited, in Washington.

Monet moved to this village in the Paris suburbs in 1878 with his sickened wife Camille and their two young children as they faced financial difficulties, along with the family of one-time patron Ernest Hoschede.

The period that ensued was one of the most prolific for the French Impressionist, who produced in just three years nearly 300 paintings, including “The Artist’s Garden at Vetheuil” (1881).

Gallery of Art is presenting two of four known works of this lush summer scene with huge sunflowers, including its own, larger piece and another temporarily on loan from California’s Norton Simon Museum.

“It’s a turning point in terms of his career, his struggles, he’s turning more toward landscape, he’s becoming more interested in atmospheric effects,” National Gallery curator of 19th century French paintings Kimberly Jones said in an interview.

The Marvel Comics film netted $176 million abroad, the biggest foreign debut ever for an R-rated title, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The movie features Ryan Reynolds playing the foul-mouthed and irreverent title character as he forms an X-Force team to protect a young mutant from the evil Cable (Josh Brolin).

For an uber-bad guy, Brolin is having a very good week. He also plays world-destroying villain Thanos in “Avengers: Infinity War,” which led North American ticket sales before “Deadpool” bumped it off.

Still packing a decent punch, “Avengers” -- starring Robert Downey Jr., Benedict Cumberbatch, Scarlett Johansson and Chris Hemsworth -- took in $28.7 million over the three-day weekend, pushing its global take past $1.8 billion.

Third in theaters was Paramount’s new romcom “Book Club,” at $12.5 million. The film stars Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen as aging friends who decide to read the steamy “Fifty Shades of Grey” and find it, um, expanding their literary and personal horizons.

In fourth was “Life of the Party,” a Warner Bros. comedy, at $7.7 million.

Melissa McCarthy, who co-wrote the script with director Ben Falcone, plays a newly divorced mother who returns to college, only to find herself in class with her (deeply embarrassed) daughter. Mount Merapi erupts, situation remains normal

YOGYAKARTA - The Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development (BPPTKG) reported here on Monday that Mount Merapi had erupted, and spewed volcanic ash as well as smoke column that rose 700 meter from the crater. “A low level phreatic eruption had occurred at 01:25 a.m. local time, Monday (May 21) for 19 minutes, with the smoke column rose by 700 m from the crater, as observed by the officials at the Babadan Station,” the agency said in a statement.

The volcanic ash, the agency added, had affected the volcano`s western area. Despite of the eruption, the seismic amplitude remains in the normal level at 20 millimeter.

Following the eruption, the Yogyakarta Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD) said that the locals living at the volcano`s foothills claimed they were not aware about the

eruption.

“The mild volcanic ash had fallen in the southern slope of the volcano`s western area. However now, the crater had stopped spewing the (ash) rain,” Wahyu Pristiawan, the office`s quick disaster response team (TRC) commander said. Because the eruption level was lower than the previous phre-

atic burst on May 11, Pristiawan said that the office will not evacuate the locals.

“The situation now remains under control. We call on the people to put masks to anticipate the volcanic ash and smoke,” he stressed. On May 11, the volcano had a low-level phreatic eruption and spewed smokes, volcanic ash,

sand, and pyroclastic material from the crater.

“The eruption took place suddenly. It was a phreatic eruption that was triggered by a boost of water vapor pressure due to the contact of water masses with heat under the crater of Mount Merapi,” Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesperson of National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said in a statement. However, Nugroho said that the type of eruption was harmless, and the status of the volcano remained normal.

“The status of Mount Merapi to date is still normal (Level I) with

dangerous radius is three kilometers from the top of the crater. The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) does not raise the status of Mount Merapi and still keep monitoring the development of volcanic activities,” Nugroho reiterated. Police investigate viral video of puppies violently dunked into Bali gutter Unsettling footage of a litter of puppies getting dunked into a Bali gutter has quickly gone viral, prompting a police investigation looking into the matter. A short video shows a pair of men roughly handling a group of screeching puppies, with their legs and snouts bound. Using a metal rod, the men violently submerge the puppies in the gutter, before lifting them up by the legs and throwing them on the side of the road.

The puppies appear to still be alive after they are pulled out just seconds from the water, so it’s not clear if the motive of the perpetrators in the video is to weaken the puppies or to “bathe” them, say police.

Netizens are quicker to make judgements on the contents of the video, speculating that the perpetrators are dog meat traders. Bali essentially banned the island’s dog meat trade with a governor’s decree in July 2017, but there have still been reports of dog meat sales persisting. If vendors are found selling dog meat, or RW as it is locally known, civil service police have previously said that they will be subject to lesser criminal charges.

But even if the men in the video weren’t trying to drown the puppies for the purpose of getting their meat, there are laws against causing animal suffering in Indonesia, which they sure seem to be violating.

Meanwhile, the Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA), has responded to the video as well, explaining that those men certainly weren’t giving the puppies a bath, outlining the laws being broken in the video, and thanking Bangli police for their swift action.(afp)

The district of Bangli continues to develop new tourist attractions, the latest one being Mahapraja attraction located in Puraja hamlet, Peninjoan, Tembuku, Bangli. This tourist attraction offers a panoramic view with a rural atmosphere and pristine lovely natural environment including a number of activities for children and adults alike.

Owner of Mahapraja attraction, I Ketut Nuadi Indra Sastrawan, accompanied by his wife, Ni Luh Ade Pica, when interviewed on Sunday (May 20) explained that they had the idea of pioneering the Mahapraja tourist attraction after visiting similar attractions in Singaraja and elsewhere in Bali.

After noticing that Tembuku was less developed than other villages in the area, they decided that this attractions could help this village develop.

“Previously, I wanted to open a business in Jimbaran with my wife but after getting the idea to create the Mahapraja attraction, which requires a lot of land and business capital, we decided on this area as there is a lot of land that just needs to be developed with the some capital. Initially we were worried about the narrow road access but we continued going forward promoting the attraction without getting discouraged. Fortunately lots of

visitors have been coming here”, he said.

Sastrawan explained that the attraction has number of facilities including simple bamboo houses, a tree house, a bamboo tower, selfie spots, a gazebo, a flying fox playground such spread across some 2 hectares of land. They also offer agri-tourism with visits to tangerine, papaya, durian, banana, clove and guava plantations, setting them apart from other attractions int eh area. This husband and wife team manage the site themselves and want to highlight the rural atmosphere with pristinely beautiful scenery.

“We also have a natural water spout for doing purification (melukat) with holy water. “This spout was already here and is considered sacred. Previously nobody was taking care of the site, but now it is used as holy water”, he explained.

Their tree house is a favourite with visitors who so far are mostly local tourists. Admission to the Mahapraja attraction is only IDR 10,000.

Overnight stays of 24hrs coast IDR 600,000. There are also camping grounds that costs IDR 35,000 or IDR 100,000 tent included (sleeps four). “The IDR 10,000 admission ticket includes accees to the all the grounds execpt flying fox that costs IDR 20,000 per ride”, he said. Cement, extreme cold experiments head to space aboard Cygnus cargo ship

TAMPA - Food for astronauts, new space gardening gear and experiments to test extreme cold and how cement forms in weightlessness blasted off Monday to the International Space Station aboard Orbital ATK’s unmanned Cygnus spacecraft.

The white Antares rocket, emblazoned with a US flag, rumbled and roared into the dark night sky over Wallops Island, Virginia at 4:44 am (0844 GMT).

The spacecraft is carrying 7,800 pounds (3,500 kilograms) of cargo on the ninth of a series of launches

by Orbital ATK, under a $1.9 billion contract with NASA to resupply the orbiting outpost. SpaceX also runs supply missions using its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon cargo vehicle.

Thirty-four new experiments are on board, including one that will create the coldest man-made temperatures anywhere in the universe, called the new Cold Atom Lab (CAL) facility. The US space agency hopes that CAL will lead to new breakthroughs in modern physics.

“CAL creates a temperature 10 billion times colder than the vacuum of space, then uses lasers and magnetic forces to slow down atoms until they are almost motionless,” NASA said in a statement.

“Results of this research could potentially lead to a number of improved technologies, including sensors, quantum computers and

atomic clocks used in spacecraft navigation.”

- ‘Plug and play’ Also on board is the first European commercial system aimed at increasing researchers’ access to space lab by offering “plugand-play” experiment cubes that are low-cost and easy to install and remove.

The International Commercial Experiment, or ICE Cubes Service, is a joint venture of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Belgian company Space Application Services.

For human explorers to set up camp on Mars, they will need to build habitats to live in and places to protect their gear, and one experiment aims to test how cement acts in space and whether it will harden up and set like it does on Earth.

Plant Habitat-01, an experiment that could boosts astronauts’ ability to grow their own food, is also on board.

It contains “a closed environment unlike any other plant growth we have had to date on the station,” said Kirt Costello, ISS chief

scientist.

“This will really allow us to look at all the variable parameters in an investigation and get down to the brass tacks of what is going on in microgravity.”

Three other plant boxes, where astronauts grow lettuce to eat, are already on board the ISS. The cargo ship is scheduled to arrive Thursday morning at the space station.

During the rendezvous, NASA flight engineer Scott Tingle will grapple the spacecraft using the space station’s robotic arm, called Canadarm2.

Cygnus will remain in space until July 15, when it will be loaded with trash and sent off to burn up on re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere. (afp)

It marks Google’s latest effort to be at the center of online news and includes a new push to help publishers get paid subscribers through the tech giant’s platform.

effort to replace human editors with machine curators.

“Nobody has ever gotten it right. I think that news designers and home page editors do a good job of curating already.”

Google and Facebook have also been criticized for scooping up most online ad revenues and for enabling false information to spread.

As seen last Sunday, the huge waves eroded the land on the edge of the Melaya Beach. As information of local residents, such huge waves have occurred since the beginning of last week. Within days, a number of buildings standing far off the coast instantly collapsed because the waves undermined the land along the coast. Some semi-permanent buildings belonging to residents, including the temple shrines are also eroded. “From the beginning of last

week, the waves are very big indeed.

Most parts of the nearly collapsed buildings are now broken,” said Nur, one of the residents met on Sunday (May 20).

No casualties were reported in the disaster, but the loss is estimated to reach tens of millions of rupiahs.

In addition to business buildings, along the coastal areas there are people’s settlements. However, some houses still stand. Without immediate handling, the houses are

feared to get eroded. “When high tide occurs, the seawater comes into the houses and the yesterday’s incident was the most severe. Lunge of the waves was also accompanied with strong winds,” said Yakob, 70, a resident of local coastal area.

Condition of the Yakob’s house is indeed very apprehensive. Other than having earth floor, the house is also walled with plaited bamboo. He is one of the poor families living in the coastal area. With the current

condition, he can only resign. Indeed, Yakob had been proposed to get a home refurbishment, but until now it has not been realized. “Well, I cannot do much as only having a piece of land. When hit by floods, I can just await low tide while trying to dig the ground for a ditch,” said this father of seven children.

Aside from having a house walled with plaited bamboo, this fisherman does not have a feasible toilet. The environment of his house located near Melaya Beach is far from feasible condition. However, Yakob has tried to make his house feasible with a makeshift ability. A simple cloth-walled and tarpaulincovered lavatory is functioned for toilet purposes. All around the

house is also muddy. Aside from being threatened by floods, his land can also disappear anytime due to abrasion.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Jembrana Public Works, Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (PUPRPKP), I Wayan Darwin, said the abrasion handling belongs to the authority of central government. His office has received a report related to the abrasion at some points in Jembrana district. Besides, it has also attempted to make submissions to central government. However, in 2018 he ensured that Jembrana will not get an abrasion handling. In addition, he did not know for sure whether Jembrana will get it in 2019 later. (kmb26)

Selling price and production cost still incomparable

SEMARAPURA — Waste processing using the local waste processing site (TOSS) method rolled out by Klungkung district government has been able to produce pellets as fuel and power generation. Moreover, the product has been sold to PT. Indonesia Power. However, the price has not managed to cover up the production cost.

The sale of TOSS is carried out by the Gunaksa village unit, Dawan.

At first stage, the amount is only one ton at the price of IDR 300 per kilogram. Local headman, Ketut Budiarta, said the figure was based on the agreement. He admitted it has

not yet comparable with the monthly operating cost reaching above IDR 10 million including the labor cost. It excludes the cost of transport or operation of the machine. “When asked about the price, well, it’s very cheap,” he explained on Sunday (May 20).

Currently, the production costs are still covered up by village fund.

In order to minimize it, ideally the selling price of the pellet is IDR 600 to IDR 800 per kilogram. Nevertheless, his side did not question it. Most importantly, the waste produced by society can be overcome so as not to damage the environment. “The current selling price has been based on calculation of the Indonesia Power.

The pellet is instantly taken in place.

Most importantly, the waste can be processed,” he said.

KINHASA - The Democratic Republic of Congo is preparing to launch an Ebola vaccination programme Monday in a bid to stop the latest outbreak of the dreaded fatal disease from spreading.

The UN’s World Health Organization (WHO) put the death toll at 25, with three new cases in the country’s sprawling northwest confirmed by the country’s health minister in a statement seen Saturday.

Alarm bells sounded last week after the outbreak, previously reported in a remote rural area of the country, notched up its first confirmed case in Mbandaka, a city of 1.2 million.

The first wave of immunisations will target healthcare staff in the northwest who have had direct or

indirect contact with ill patients, the Congolese government said.

Among them are Hilaire Manzibe, a doctor at Wangata Reference Hospital in the city, who described how he treated a patient on May 1 who arrived from Bikoro, the epicentre of the current outbreak, with symptoms of fever and vomiting.

But the patient’s family refused treatment and instead returned home to administer traditional medicine -- a cultural hurdle that was one of the largest obstacles to overcome in the last outbreak which began in 2014.

More than a week later he returned, “the patient showed all the signs of the fever that has hit Bikoro,” Manzibe said.

An isolation ward was prepared,

but he succumbed to the fever.

“The patient was in contact with our receptionists, went to the doctor for a consultation and then was in my hands,” explained nurse Julie Lobali, who will also receive a vaccination on Monday.

WHO has dispatched 35 immunisation experts, including 16 mobilised during the last deadly outbreak in West Africa which began in 2013. The rest of the team is made up of newly trained Congolese staff.

Around 600 vaccinations are to be administered.

Donors had promised 300,000 doses of the vaccine, a government spokesman said, of which around 5,400 have already been received. (afp)

The Australian operations of American chain Toys ‘R’ Us was placed under administration Monday, months after the closure of its US and British stores as the retail sector battles the online shopping boom.

The business went into voluntary administration after the last bidder involved in an auction to sell the stores pulled out, administrators McGrathNicol said in a

statement.

There are 44 Toys ‘R’ Us and Babies ‘R’ Us outlets across Australia as well as a distribution centre in Sydney, with the business employing 700 staff. The administrators said all stores “will remain open and continue to trade while they urgently explore options for completing a sale of the stand-alone Australian business as a

going concern”.

The business could also be recapitalised, they added, without giving further details. Administration is a process whereby a troubled company seeks independent financial advice regarding its future.

Founded in 1948 as a small childcare store in Washington, DC, Toys ‘R’ Us evolved into one of the world’s most recognisable

But like other bricks-and-mortar retailers, it has struggled amid the rise of ecommerce and an internet buying culture.

Wisnu’s massive upper body, as well as Garuda’s head and claws have been attracting scores of local and foreign visitors to the park for a good few years now. While the final monument will be made from over 4000 tons of copper, brass and steel, its parts are currently being fashioned by Nuarta at his Bandung workshop in Java before being transported over 1000km by trucks for installation.

Pokdarwis continues to explore the village potential, where the latest is the potential of the river. The local river remaining natural with a fairly heavy flow can be used for rafting adventure.

This rafting tour is considered as the first one in North Bali. However, his group is still constrained by equipment of the adrenalin racing adventure. “Yesterday we tested with our self-made equipment, but we still need equipment complying with the standards,” he said.

Venezuela’s Maduro still standing after five turbulent years

CARACAS - One year ago few could see crisis-beset Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro re-elected for a second term -- and yet on Sunday he powered to another six-year mandate, giving him a stranglehold on the presidency until 2025.

This despite presiding over the South American country’s ruined economy, where food shortages are the norm and protests last year left 125 dead.

“We won again! We triumphed again! We are the force of history turned into a permanent popular victory!” he cried out to a crowd of supporters, claiming that he won a “record” victory.

Maduro’s nearest challenger, Henri Falcon, took just over 22 percent of the vote -- and said that he did not accept the final results.

Maduro, a 55-year-old former bus driver and union leader, and ex-foreign minister, never doubted that he would be re-elected in a vote that he himself moved forward from December to May. Yet the president has struggled to gain respect as the legitimate successor to Hugo Chavez, who

led Venezuela from 1999 until his death in 2013 and who anointed Maduro as his successor to perpetuate his own populist leftist ideology.

“His authority was born out of the legacy of Chavez, but now we have a different Maduro, who knows that he is strong and is more aggressive,” Felix Seijas, head of the polling agency Delphos, told AFP. Maduro’s first term in office was turbulent: the economic crisis, rising poverty and crime, violent street protests, international sanctions, and millions of Venezuelans fleeing their country.

“Five years ago I was a novice,” he said recently. “Now I am a standup Maduro, with battle experience, who has confronted the oligarchy and imperialism.

Stars urge Indonesia to ban ‘brutal’ trade in dog meat

JAKARTA — International stars of acting, music and sports have urged Indonesia’s president to ban what they say is a “brutal” trade in dog and cat meat for human consumption.

The appeal comes after Indonesian campaigners against animal cruelty and Humane Society International in January exposed markets on the island of Sulawesi where dogs were bludgeoned by the thousands and blow-torched alive to remove their hair before onlookers, including children.

The letter to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo released Monday said if Indonesia joined other Asian nations that have already banned the cruel trade, it would be “celebrated globally” and end a stain on the country’s reputation.

The coalition of campaigners, calling itself Dog Meat-Free Indonesia, also warned of health risks posed by the trade due to its potential to spread rabies.

“These animals, many of them stolen pets, are subjected to crude and brutal methods of capture, transport and slaughter, and the immense suffering and fear they must endure is heartbreaking and absolutely shocking,” the letter said.

Actress Cameron Diaz, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, talent spotter Simon Cowell, comedian Ricky Gervais, Indonesian pop singer Anggun and musician Moby are among the more than 90 celebrities listed in the letter.

Dog meat is eaten by only a small percentage of Indonesians, but in a country of more than 250 million people it still represents a significant trade.

Thousands of dogs and cats are slaughtered weekly in North Sulawesi, most of which are imported from other provinces in Indonesia, according to the anti-animal cruelty groups.

After the blaze of bad publicity in January, the infamous Tomohon Extreme Market in North Sulawesi stopped the public slaughter of dogs, but video shot by campaigners showed dog carcasses were still being delivered from other locations.

“We are so grateful to these global and Indonesian superstars who have come together to support Dog Meat-Free Indonesia’s efforts to end this cruel and dangerous industry,” Humane Society International President Kitty Block said in a statement.

“We respectfully urge President Widodo to work with us on a solution that protects not only Indonesia’s dogs and cats but also the health of its people,” she said.(ap)

LOS ANGELES - The Golden State Warriors’ 126-85 demolition of the Houston Rockets on Sunday was an NBA record-setting 16th straight home playoff win, but the Warriors won’t take time to celebrate the milestone.

The reigning champions surpassed the mark of 15 straight home playoff wins set by the Chicago Bulls from April 27, 1990 to May 21, 1991.

But head coach Steve Kerr said the Warriors couldn’t afford to think about that kind of history with game four against the Rockets looming on Tuesday.

“We’re in the middle of a hell of a run, obviously,” Kerr said.

“We’ve got great players who are committed, they take a lot of pride in protecting our home floor.

“I’m really proud of them, of what they have accomplished over

the last few years. But make no mistake about it, game four will be incredibly difficult.

“We know what’s coming so we’re not playing any attention to that stuff. We’ve got to be ready for the force that’s coming from them in game four.”

The Warriors lead the best-ofseven series two games to one.

Their massive victory over the Rockets -- who led the league with 65 regular-season wins -- owed a lot to a breakout game for Stephen Curry.

The two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, who missed the first round as he continued to recover from a sprained knee ligament that sidelined him for 16 games, produced his first 30-point game of the 2018 post-season with 35 points.

Kerr wasn’t surprised to see his

superstar bounce back.

“He’s under-rated for the toughness factor,” Kerr said. “You don’t become two-time MVP just by shooting a bunch of threes.

“He’s got unbelievable stamina, physical toughness, mental toughness. What he did tonight didn’t surprise me. He’s got unbelievable character, talent, it always rises when it needs to.”

Curry and the rest of the Warriors will need to keep the pressure on in game four against a Rockets team that will be desperate to level the series before it heads back to Houston.

“It’s a huge game, it’s kind of a swing game of the series,” Kerr said. “We’re right where we want to be but we’re not naive enough to think what happened tonight is an indication of what will happen in a couple of days.” (afp)

Matic says Man Utd ‘can fight for Premier League title’ with right signings

De Vrij fouled Icardi to concede a penalty converted by the striker on 78 minutes, with Matias Vecino heading in the winner three minutes later after Lazio captain Senad Lulic was sent off for a second yellow card. “All players are professionals, I don’t think he fouled me on purpose,” Icardi said.

“He tried to stop me scoring, it was just destiny. “We’ll certainly try to improve, because a side like Inter cannot afford to be so inconsistent,” said the Argentine of a campaign which saw Inter go unbeaten until December 16 before struggling in the second part of the season. “That’s the first thing we need to sort out. We had a great start to the season, then there was a collapse.

“We put in these performances that are either fantastic or terrible. We must try to find a middle ground.”

Two Spanish giants bid farewell to their boyhood clubs on Sunday as Andres Iniesta waved goodbye to Barcelona and Fernando Torres went out with a bang at Aletico Madrid. Torres scored twice on his final appearance for Atletico, even if a Lucas Hernandez red card helped Eibar claim a 2-2 draw on the last day of the La Liga season.

Iniesta’s 22-year association with Barcelona, meanwhile, ended with a victory as the player marked out as the Spaniard’s successor, Philippe Coutinho, proved the difference in a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad. With a tear in his eye, Iniesta walked off to a standing ovation from the Camp Nou in the second half, having unfastened his captain’s armband and handed it to Lionel Messi.

LOS ANGELES - The Golden State Warriors’ 126-85 demolition of the Houston Rockets on Sunday was an NBA record-setting 16th straight home playoff win, but the Warriors won’t take time to celebrate the milestone.

The reigning champions surpassed the mark of 15 straight home playoff wins set by the Chicago Bulls from April 27, 1990 to May 21, 1991.

But head coach Steve Kerr said the Warriors couldn’t afford to think about that kind of history with game four against the Rockets looming on Tuesday.

“We’re in the middle of a hell of a run, obviously,” Kerr said.

“We’ve got great players who are committed, they take a lot of pride in protecting our home floor.

“I’m really proud of them, of what they have accomplished over

the last few years. But make no mistake about it, game four will be incredibly difficult.

“We know what’s coming so we’re not playing any attention to that stuff. We’ve got to be ready for the force that’s coming from them in game four.”

The Warriors lead the best-ofseven series two games to one.

Their massive victory over the Rockets -- who led the league with 65 regular-season wins -- owed a lot to a breakout game for Stephen Curry.

The two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, who missed the first round as he continued to recover from a sprained knee ligament that sidelined him for 16 games, produced his first 30-point game of the 2018 post-season with 35 points.

Kerr wasn’t surprised to see his

superstar bounce back.

“He’s under-rated for the toughness factor,” Kerr said. “You don’t become two-time MVP just by shooting a bunch of threes.

“He’s got unbelievable stamina, physical toughness, mental toughness. What he did tonight didn’t surprise me. He’s got unbelievable character, talent, it always rises when it needs to.”

Curry and the rest of the Warriors will need to keep the pressure on in game four against a Rockets team that will be desperate to level the series before it heads back to Houston.

“It’s a huge game, it’s kind of a swing game of the series,” Kerr said. “We’re right where we want to be but we’re not naive enough to think what happened tonight is an indication of what will happen in a couple of days.” (afp)

Venezuela’s Maduro still standing after five turbulent years

CARACAS - One year ago few could see crisis-beset Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro re-elected for a second term -- and yet on Sunday he powered to another six-year mandate, giving him a stranglehold on the presidency until 2025.

This despite presiding over the South American country’s ruined economy, where food shortages are the norm and protests last year left 125 dead.

“We won again! We triumphed again! We are the force of history turned into a permanent popular victory!” he cried out to a crowd of supporters, claiming that he won a “record” victory.

Maduro’s nearest challenger, Henri Falcon, took just over 22 percent of the vote -- and said that he did not accept the final results.

Maduro, a 55-year-old former bus driver and union leader, and ex-foreign minister, never doubted that he would be re-elected in a vote that he himself moved forward from December to May. Yet the president has struggled to gain respect as the legitimate successor to Hugo Chavez, who

led Venezuela from 1999 until his death in 2013 and who anointed Maduro as his successor to perpetuate his own populist leftist ideology.

“His authority was born out of the legacy of Chavez, but now we have a different Maduro, who knows that he is strong and is more aggressive,” Felix Seijas, head of the polling agency Delphos, told AFP. Maduro’s first term in office was turbulent: the economic crisis, rising poverty and crime, violent street protests, international sanctions, and millions of Venezuelans fleeing their country.

“Five years ago I was a novice,” he said recently. “Now I am a standup Maduro, with battle experience, who has confronted the oligarchy and imperialism.

Texans turn to God as school rocked by latest shooting

SANTA FE - Grief-stricken families in southwestern Texas gathered in churches throughout Santa Fe on Sunday seeking spiritual succor following a massacre at the town’s high school, the nation’s latest mass shooting.

As federal investigators search for a motive in the deadly attack, hundreds of people attended an emotional funeral service for a Pakistani exchange student, one of 10 people killed in Friday’s rampage. Many of the men wore traditional Muslim garb, kneeled and prayed.

The gunman has been identified as Dimitrios Pagourtzis, a 17-year-old student who is alleged to have used his father’s shotgun and revolver to kill fellow classmates and two teachers.

Stars urge Indonesia to ban ‘brutal’ trade in dog meat

JAKARTA — International stars of acting, music and sports have urged Indonesia’s president to ban what they say is a “brutal” trade in dog and cat meat for human consumption.

The appeal comes after Indonesian campaigners against animal cruelty and Humane Society International in January exposed markets on the island of Sulawesi where dogs were bludgeoned by the thousands and blow-torched alive to remove their hair before onlookers, including children.

The letter to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo released Monday said if Indonesia joined other Asian nations that have already banned the cruel trade, it would be “celebrated globally” and end a stain on the country’s reputation.

The coalition of campaigners, calling itself Dog Meat-Free Indonesia, also warned of health risks posed by the trade due to its potential to spread rabies.

“These animals, many of them stolen pets, are subjected to crude and brutal methods of capture, transport and slaughter, and the immense suffering and fear they must endure is heartbreaking and absolutely shocking,” the letter said.

Actress Cameron Diaz, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, talent spotter Simon Cowell, comedian Ricky Gervais, Indonesian pop singer Anggun and musician Moby are among the more than 90 celebrities listed in the letter.

Dog meat is eaten by only a small percentage of Indonesians, but in a country of more than 250 million people it still represents a significant trade.

Thousands of dogs and cats are slaughtered weekly in North Sulawesi, most of which are imported from other provinces in Indonesia, according to the anti-animal cruelty groups.

After the blaze of bad publicity in January, the infamous Tomohon Extreme Market in North Sulawesi stopped the public slaughter of dogs, but video shot by campaigners showed dog carcasses were still being delivered from other locations.

“We are so grateful to these global and Indonesian superstars who have come together to support Dog Meat-Free Indonesia’s efforts to end this cruel and dangerous industry,” Humane Society International President Kitty Block said in a statement.

“We respectfully urge President Widodo to work with us on a solution that protects not only Indonesia’s dogs and cats but also the health of its people,” she said.(ap)

BUSINESS Toys ‘R’ Us Australia put in administration after US stores fold

The Australian operations of American chain Toys ‘R’ Us was placed under administration Monday, months after the closure of its US and British stores as the retail sector battles the online shopping boom.

The business went into voluntary administration after the last bidder involved in an auction to sell the stores pulled out, administrators McGrathNicol said in a

statement.

There are 44 Toys ‘R’ Us and Babies ‘R’ Us outlets across Australia as well as a distribution centre in Sydney, with the business employing 700 staff. The administrators said all stores “will remain open and continue to trade while they urgently explore options for completing a sale of the stand-alone Australian business as a

going concern”.

The business could also be recapitalised, they added, without giving further details. Administration is a process whereby a troubled company seeks independent financial advice regarding its future.

Founded in 1948 as a small childcare store in Washington, DC, Toys ‘R’ Us evolved into one of the world’s most recognisable

kids’ brands.

But like other bricks-and-mortar retailers, it has struggled amid the rise of ecommerce and an internet buying culture.

Toys ‘R’ Us announced in March that it would liquidate its US operations and shut down all 735 stores. The British arm of the embattled retailer said in February it was winding down its activities. (afp)

“The latest statement on the China-US trade suggests both parties are happy to avoid the dreaded tit-for-tat escalation while working towards a more market-friendly bilateral trade agreement,” said Stephen Innes, head of Asia-Pacific trade at OANDA. “The intentional vagueness delivered by both par-

ties’ statements suggests a great divide, but there’s a hint of a consensus, none the less, to bridge that gap. So given the possible worstcase scenario was avoided the market should view the latest trade discussions as a favourable.”

Masterminded by a renowned Balinese sculptor I Nyoman Nuarta, the partially-completed statue is already the highlight of the 240-hectare Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park on the island’s southern coast. Wisnu’s massive upper body, as well as Garuda’s head and claws have been attracting scores of local and foreign visitors to the park for a good few years now. While the final monument will be made from over 4000 tons of copper, brass and steel, its parts are currently being fashioned by Nuarta at his Bandung workshop in Java before being transported over 1000km by trucks for installation.

KINHASA - The Democratic Republic of Congo is preparing to launch an Ebola vaccination programme Monday in a bid to stop the latest outbreak of the dreaded fatal disease from spreading.

The UN’s World Health Organization (WHO) put the death toll at 25, with three new cases in the country’s sprawling northwest confirmed by the country’s health minister in a statement seen Saturday.

Alarm bells sounded last week after the outbreak, previously reported in a remote rural area of the country, notched up its first confirmed case in Mbandaka, a city of 1.2 million.

The first wave of immunisations will target healthcare staff in the northwest who have had direct or

indirect contact with ill patients, the Congolese government said.

Among them are Hilaire Manzibe, a doctor at Wangata Reference Hospital in the city, who described how he treated a patient on May 1 who arrived from Bikoro, the epicentre of the current outbreak, with symptoms of fever and vomiting.

But the patient’s family refused treatment and instead returned home to administer traditional medicine -- a cultural hurdle that was one of the largest obstacles to overcome in the last outbreak which began in 2014.

More than a week later he returned, “the patient showed all the signs of the fever that has hit Bikoro,” Manzibe said.

An isolation ward was prepared,

but he succumbed to the fever.

“The patient was in contact with our receptionists, went to the doctor for a consultation and then was in my hands,” explained nurse Julie Lobali, who will also receive a vaccination on Monday.

WHO has dispatched 35 immunisation experts, including 16 mobilised during the last deadly outbreak in West Africa which began in 2013. The rest of the team is made up of newly trained Congolese staff.

Around 600 vaccinations are to be administered.

Donors had promised 300,000 doses of the vaccine, a government spokesman said, of which around 5,400 have already been received. (afp)

Cement, extreme cold experiments head to space aboard Cygnus cargo ship

TAMPA - Food for astronauts, new space gardening gear and experiments to test extreme cold and how cement forms in weightlessness blasted off Monday to the International Space Station aboard Orbital ATK’s unmanned Cygnus spacecraft.

The white Antares rocket, emblazoned with a US flag, rumbled and roared into the dark night sky over Wallops Island, Virginia at 4:44 am (0844 GMT).

The spacecraft is carrying 7,800 pounds (3,500 kilograms) of cargo on the ninth of a series of launches

by Orbital ATK, under a $1.9 billion contract with NASA to resupply the orbiting outpost. SpaceX also runs supply missions using its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon cargo vehicle.

Thirty-four new experiments are on board, including one that will create the coldest man-made temperatures anywhere in the universe, called the new Cold Atom Lab (CAL) facility. The US space agency hopes that CAL will lead to new breakthroughs in modern physics.

“CAL creates a temperature 10 billion times colder than the vacuum of space, then uses lasers and magnetic forces to slow down atoms until they are almost motionless,” NASA said in a statement.

“Results of this research could potentially lead to a number of improved technologies, including sensors, quantum computers and

atomic clocks used in spacecraft navigation.”

- ‘Plug and play’ Also on board is the first European commercial system aimed at increasing researchers’ access to space lab by offering “plugand-play” experiment cubes that are low-cost and easy to install and remove.

The International Commercial Experiment, or ICE Cubes Service, is a joint venture of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Belgian company Space Application Services.

For human explorers to set up camp on Mars, they will need to build habitats to live in and places to protect their gear, and one experiment aims to test how cement acts in space and whether it will harden up and set like it does on Earth.

Plant Habitat-01, an experiment that could boosts astronauts’ ability to grow their own food, is also on board.

It contains “a closed environment unlike any other plant growth we have had to date on the station,” said Kirt Costello, ISS chief

scientist.

“This will really allow us to look at all the variable parameters in an investigation and get down to the brass tacks of what is going on in microgravity.”

Three other plant boxes, where astronauts grow lettuce to eat, are already on board the ISS. The cargo ship is scheduled to arrive Thursday morning at the space station.

During the rendezvous, NASA flight engineer Scott Tingle will grapple the spacecraft using the space station’s robotic arm, called Canadarm2.

Within days, a number of buildings standing far off the coast instantly collapsed because the waves undermined the land along the coast. Some semi-permanent buildings belonging to residents, including the temple shrines are also eroded. “From the beginning of last

week, the waves are very big indeed.

Most parts of the nearly collapsed buildings are now broken,” said Nur, one of the residents met on Sunday (May 20).

No casualties were reported in the disaster, but the loss is estimated to reach tens of millions of rupiahs.

house is also muddy. Aside from being threatened by floods, his land can also disappear anytime due to abrasion.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Jembrana Public Works, Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (PUPRPKP), I Wayan Darwin, said the abrasion handling belongs to the authority of central government. His office has received a report related to the abrasion at some points in Jembrana district. Besides, it has also attempted to make submissions to central government. SEMARAPURA — Waste processing using the local waste processing site (TOSS) method rolled out by Klungkung district government has been able to produce pellets as fuel and power generation. Moreover, the product has been sold to PT. Indonesia Power. However, the price has not managed to cover up the production cost.

The sale of TOSS is carried out by the Gunaksa village unit, Dawan.

At first stage, the amount is only one ton at the price of IDR 300 per kilogram. Local headman, Ketut Budiarta, said the figure was based on the agreement. He admitted it has

not yet comparable with the monthly operating cost reaching above IDR 10 million including the labor cost. It excludes the cost of transport or operation of the machine. “When asked about the price, well, it’s very cheap,” he explained on Sunday (May 20).

Currently, the production costs are still covered up by village fund.

In order to minimize it, ideally the selling price of the pellet is IDR 600 to IDR 800 per kilogram. Nevertheless, his side did not question it. Most importantly, the waste produced by society can be overcome so as not to damage the environment. “The current selling price has been based on calculation of the Indonesia Power.

The pellet is instantly taken in place.

Most importantly, the waste can be processed,” he said.

Head of the Klungkung Environmental and Land Affairs Office, Anak Agung Kirana, said the selling price refers to the MoU between the pellet producing villages and PT Indonesia Power. His office only facilitates the communication. “Regarding the price, I do not know,” he said.

Police investigate viral video of puppies violently dunked into Bali gutter Unsettling footage of a litter of puppies getting dunked into a Bali gutter has quickly gone viral, prompting a police investigation looking into the matter. A short video shows a pair of men roughly handling a group of screeching puppies, with their legs and snouts bound. Using a metal rod, the men violently submerge the puppies in the gutter, before lifting them up by the legs and throwing them on the side of the road.

The puppies appear to still be alive after they are pulled out just seconds from the water, so it’s not clear if the motive of the perpetrators in the video is to weaken the puppies or to “bathe” them, say police.

Monet sister paintings reunited in US for first time WASHINGTON - For the first time since they were painted more than a century ago, two oil paintings of Claude Monet’s garden in Vetheuil have been reunited, in Washington.

Monet moved to this village in the Paris suburbs in 1878 with his sickened wife Camille and their two young children as they faced financial difficulties, along with the family of one-time patron Ernest Hoschede.

The period that ensued was one of the most prolific for the French Impressionist, who produced in just three years nearly 300 paintings, including “The Artist’s Garden at Vetheuil” (1881).

Gallery of Art is presenting two of four known works of this lush summer scene with huge sunflowers, including its own, larger piece and another temporarily on loan from California’s Norton Simon Museum.

“It’s a turning point in terms of his career, his struggles, he’s turning more toward landscape, he’s becoming more interested in atmospheric effects,” National Gallery curator of 19th century French paintings Kimberly Jones said in an interview.

The Norton Simon’s version, believed to have served as a model for its companion, is more heavily worked in most areas. (afp)

The Marvel Comics film netted $176 million abroad, the biggest foreign debut ever for an R-rated title, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The movie features Ryan Reynolds playing the foul-mouthed and irreverent title character as he forms an X-Force team to protect a young mutant from the evil Cable (Josh Brolin).

For an uber-bad guy, Brolin is having a very good week. He also plays world-destroying villain Thanos in “Avengers: Infinity War,” which led North American ticket sales before “Deadpool” bumped it off.

Still packing a decent punch, “Avengers” -- starring Robert Downey Jr., Benedict Cumberbatch, Scarlett Johansson and Chris Hemsworth -- took in $28.7 million over the three-day weekend, pushing its global take past $1.8 billion.

Third in theaters was Paramount’s new romcom “Book Club,” at $12.5 million. The film stars Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen as aging friends who decide to read the steamy “Fifty Shades of Grey” and find it, um, expanding their literary and personal horizons.

In fourth was “Life of the Party,” a Warner Bros. comedy, at $7.7 million.

Melissa McCarthy, who co-wrote the script with director Ben Falcone, plays a newly divorced mother who returns to college, only to find herself in class with her (deeply embarrassed) daughter. Mount Merapi erupts, situation remains normal

YOGYAKARTA - The Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development (BPPTKG) reported here on Monday that Mount Merapi had erupted, and spewed volcanic ash as well as smoke column that rose 700 meter from the crater. “A low level phreatic eruption had occurred at 01:25 a.m. local time, Monday (May 21) for 19 minutes, with the smoke column rose by 700 m from the crater, as observed by the officials at the Babadan Station,” the agency said in a statement.

The volcanic ash, the agency added, had affected the volcano`s western area. Despite of the eruption, the seismic amplitude remains in the normal level at 20 millimeter.

Following the eruption, the Yogyakarta Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD) said that the locals living at the volcano`s foothills claimed they were not aware about the

eruption.

“The mild volcanic ash had fallen in the southern slope of the volcano`s western area. However now, the crater had stopped spewing the (ash) rain,” Wahyu Pristiawan, the office`s quick disaster response team (TRC) commander said. Because the eruption level was lower than the previous phre-

atic burst on May 11, Pristiawan said that the office will not evacuate the locals.

“The situation now remains under control. We call on the people to put masks to anticipate the volcanic ash and smoke,” he stressed. On May 11, the volcano had a low-level phreatic eruption and spewed smokes, volcanic ash,

sand, and pyroclastic material from the crater.

“The eruption took place suddenly. It was a phreatic eruption that was triggered by a boost of water vapor pressure due to the contact of water masses with heat under the crater of Mount Merapi,” Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesperson of National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said in a statement. However, Nugroho said that the type of eruption was harmless, and the status of the volcano remained normal.

“The status of Mount Merapi to date is still normal (Level I) with

dangerous radius is three kilometers from the top of the crater. The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) does not raise the status of Mount Merapi and still keep monitoring the development of volcanic activities,” Nugroho reiterated.
