The son adoption was held on Saturday (May 20) at Saren Kelod Palace, Ubud. The son adoption ceremony of King Saren Kelod Palace was attended by the family of King Saren Kelod Palace, relatives and business colleagues from a number of countries. Some of them are from Taiwan, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, United States (US), and Singapore. Officially, this son adoption ceremony was done by embedding the royal insignia to Dato Sri and spouse. After the coronation, Dato Sri Dr. Aixinjueluo Yuhao was named Ananda Putra I Gusti Ketut Dalem. This honorable adoption aims to widely introduce the Balinese art throughout the world for the development of Bali tourism. Ananda Putra I Gusti Ketut Dalem said that his intention to be a member of the royal family of Saren Kelod Semar Kuning Palace of Ubud began with his interest in the unique Balinese art that contains artistic value. He claimed to have seen a number of Balinese artworks while making a visit, especially on wood carvings, stones and paintings, where according to him, retaining special points. Therefore, he wants to widely introduce the Balinese arts to the world. Moreover, he is now one of the presidents of the World

SIDON - It might well excite one’s curiosity to speak of a soap museum without mentioning the history of “sapo” and it might not seem entirely appropriate to use the noble word “museum” in a context which is not satisfactory. At present one finds a Museum of Mankind, of Motor Cars, or Aeronautics, of Wine, of Traditions and Customs, of Soap and of Waxworks, in fact the list is endless. This sublime word “museum” means a collection, an exposition, a fair, or anything similar. To begin with, it was the holy Eden of the masterpieces of creative minds, of artists and of geniuses. The story of soap goes back several thousands of years, before 4500 B.C. to be more exact. In Sumer it was a soapy paste with a basis of clay, ashes and fat, and the same in Egypt and Phoenicia. It was in the 4th century A.D. that the Gallic Romans gave the name “sapo” to a more complex paste that was used for treating the skin and certain disorders. Baths as we know them were taken not at all or once or twice a year. It was only in 1371 at Marseille that soap began its evolution to reach its present form of an indispensable product for general use. Then it was at Saïda, or Sidon, ancient Phoenician city that has seen a whole succession of civilizations and conquerors and which was the capital of Emir Fakhreddine the Great, with many temples and citadels, a palace, a port, and squares, that a distinguished family decided to transform its fine residence into the museum Khan es-Saboon”, for soaps

The East façade, which gives onto a wide boulevard, was restored by its owners the Audis, who are considering the enlargement of the complex by adding other ancient adjoining houses.

Visitors can see a demonstration of how traditional olive oil soaps are made and learn about the history of the “hammam” (bath) traditions. A historical section of the museum introduces artifacts which were found during onsite excavation and which include remains of clay pipe heads dating from the 17th to 19th century as well as pottery fragments. The Museum building is an old soap factory built in the 17th century, although containing parts thought to date back to the 13th century, and was restored by the Audi Foundation before officially opening to the public in November 2000. To protect farmland, district govt expected to subsidize property tax

BANGLI - Depreciation of farmland due to rampant conversion becomes the problem faced by almost all the regions in Bali, and Bangli district is no exception. To protect the existence of farmland in Bangli so as not to continue to shrink, local government is expected to make policies that alleviate farmers. One of the expected policies is by subsidizing or eliminating property tax for farmland. Chief of Subak Tegallalang, Sang Ketut Rencana, said on Saturday (May 20) there are many factors triggering the farmland conversion in Bangli, especially in urban areas. In addition to the difficulty to get irrigation water, the imposition of property tax is also admitted to contribute to the shrinkage of farmland. He said that many farmers in urban areas such as the LC Uma Aya preferred to sell their paddy fields to investors and other parties because the amount of property taxes (PBB) to be paid to government is considered quite high. The value of property tax imposed for the land in the area of LC Uma Aya is higher than the tax imposed at villages because the taxable property selling value (NJOP) is different. “The high taxes to be paid by farmers then cause farmers, especially those in the city, to sell their farmland,” said Rencana. Under these conditions, Rencana expected the

government to make policies that can ease farmers in the future. One of them is by providing subsidies or if possible exempting the imposition of property tax on the existing farmland. With this policy, it is believed to be able to reduce the shrinkage of farmland, especially in urban areas. Apart from making a policy of subsidy or property tax exemption, to maintain the existence of farmland in Bangli so as not to be touched or faced with conversion, the regent is expected to seriously and firmly implement the Law No.41/2009 on sustainable food agriculture, for example, by making a regent regulation. He explained, in the law is stipulated that farmland of food crops should not be converted. Otherwise, it can be penalized by criminal sanctions. “The mandate of the law is like that. So far, it has not been implemented in Bangli,” he explained. Separately, the Head of the Bali Regional Finance, Income and Assets Agency, Gede Suryawan, said that in relation to the property tax exemption for farmland, so far there has been no law regulating it. Even if later on there is a change of law, it will be surely followed by changes in regional policy. “It depends on the policy between the executive and the legislative. BANGKOK - On Friday evenings in Thailand, sandwiched between the evening news and a popular soap opera, is a primetime programme that has been running for three years, or ever since the military took power in a May 22, 2014 coup. Called “Sustainable Development from a Royal Philosophy” it stars junta leader and former army chief Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha speaking on a range of topics, from the virtues of modesty to the state of the economy. The military has always played a prominent role in Thai life. But Prayuth’s show is just one of many examples of how embedded the junta has become in Thai society. Thailand’s military government has acknowledged it wants to weaken political parties and maintain permanent influence over future elected governments, partly through a new constitution approved by Thailand’s king last month. But data compiled by Reuters shows the military is not just trying to influence Thailand’s political life. It is leaving an imprint on nearly every institution of Thai society, with brass hats far more entrenched in senior positions than under pre-

vious military governments. ENTWINED WITH MONARCHY The military now controls 143 out of 250 parliamentary seats. Under the previous junta after the 2006 coup, the military held 67 out of 242 seats. The cabinet is stacked with soldiers. Out of the 36 cabinet members, 12 have a military background. In 2006, only four military officers were among the 37 cabinet members. The military is also entwined with the powerful monarchy - the name of Prayuth’s show is derived from the philosophy of the late king Bhumibol Adulyadej, who died last October after seven decades on the throne. More than half of the 13 members of the Privy Council, the body that advises new King Maha Vajiralongkorn – himself a former

soldier - are military men. It was just under half in the previous Council. Cinema and television stations are increasingly showing promilitary themes and the school curriculum features military slogans. “The military coup of 2014 offered the armed forces the chance to put in place a wider footprint and they are doing so,” Paul Chambers, a professor at Naresuan University and an expert on the Thai military, told Reuters in an e-mail. “A younger generation of retired military officers are, since the end of 2016, sitting on the Privy Council,” he noted. The public does not appear too concerned. The government says military recruitment numbers doubled in 2017 from the previous year and attribute that to public approval of their hard-line tactics in breaking a political impasse that had persisted for years. DUBAI - President Hassan Rouhani pledged on Saturday to open Iran to the world and deliver freedoms its people have yearned for, throwing down a defiant challenge to his hardline opponents after securing a decisive re-election for a second term. Rouhani, long known as a cautious and mild-mannered establishment insider, reinvented himself as a bold champion of reform during the election campaign, which culminated on Friday in victory with more than 57 percent of the vote. His main challenger, hardline judge Ebrahim Raisi, received 38 percent. In his first televised speech after the result, Rouhani appeared to openly defy conservative judges by praising the spiritual leader of the reform camp, former President Mohammad Khatami. A court has banned quoting or naming Khatami on air. “Our nation’s message in the election was clear: Iran’s nation chose the path of interaction with the world, away from violence and extremism,” Rouhani said. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, whose country has had no diplomatic relations with Iran since 1980, said he hoped Rouhani would use his second term to end Tehran’s ballistic missile programme and what he called its network of terrorism. Iran denies any involvement in terrorism and says its missile programme, which U.S. President Donald Trump recently targeted with new sanctions, is purely for defence purposes. Although the powers of the elected president are limited by those of unelected Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who outranks him, the scale of Rouhani’s victory gives the pro-reform camp its strongest mandate in at least 12 years to seek the sort of change that hardliners have thwarted for decades. Rouhani’s opponent Raisi, a protege of Khamenei, had united the conservative faction and had been tipped as a potential successor to the 77-year-old supreme leader. Lee who is accused of bribing Park. Both are undergoing trial on criminal charges and have denied any wrongdoing. The conglomerates helped transform South Korea into Asia’s fourth-largest economy. But critics say they have used their cosy ties with the government to crowd out smaller businesses. They also blame the chaebol’s complex web of cross-shareholdings among group companies and opaque governance for the so-called “Korea Discount” - meaning their shares are typically undervalued in comparison to their global peers. TPP countries agree to keep trade deal alive despite US rejection

HANOI - The United States ruled out returning to the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal and said on Sunday it only wanted bilateral agreements in Asia, as Japan and other members agreed to more talks on pressing ahead themselves. Turmoil over global trade negotiations was laid bare at a meeting of Asia-Pacific Cooperation (APEC) countries, which failed to agree the usual joint statement after U.S. opposition to wording on free trade and fighting protectionism. The meeting in Hanoi, Vietnam, was the biggest global trade gathering since U.S. President Donald Trump upended the old order with his “America First” trade policy, designed to protect American jobs. Trump withdrew from TPP in one of his first acts in office, but the 11 remaining countries agreed in Hanoi to explore how they could still move ahead - partly in the hope that the United States would

reconsider leaving. New U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said there was no way back. “TPP-11 can make their own decisions and the United States makes its decision, but we expect to stay engaged and I believe at some point there will be a series of bilateral agreements with partners in this part of the world,” he told a news conference. Although the TPP members kept the trade agreement alive, they fell short of a wholehearted commitment to move ahead immediately with a deal that members also see as a way to contain an increasingly dominant China.

“Eleven countries have shown a lot of unity and a desire to move through some of the equations that will be required to look to put the agreement into force,” New Zealand Trade Minister Todd McClay, leading the discussions, told Reuters. One of the biggest challenges is keeping on board Vietnam and Malaysia, which signed up for the deal and promised to make major reforms largely to get better U.S. market access. They now want to renegotiate some points. The volume of trade between the remaining countries is barely a quarter of the level it would have been if the United States had remained in the TPP. Officials from TPP countries will meet again in Japan in July and bring proposals in November, McClay said. (rtr)

He hoped that GRAK could resonate into more concrete matters. The dialogue presented two speakers namely Gus Nuril and Wahyu Budi Nugroho, a lecturer at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Udayana University and moderated by Mardika. In his presentation, Wahyu provided an

understanding on Islamic teachings and radicalism. According to radical Islamic group and hard line group, it is strange if a Muslim embraces democracy because nationalism is not found in the Islamic world. “Muslims has not been radical yet if they are not anti-democratic and anti-nationalism,” he said. There are three classifications of Islamist movement namely revivalism, reformism, and radicalism. Radicalism is the most violent Islamic movement between the two. This movement is born out of reaction against various problems of modern life. “Radicalism strives to create a new world,” he said. The new world in question is an Islamic state or known as Khilafah Islamiyah. The Islamic state is a state predominantly consisting of Muslim applying the laws of the Qur’an and As Sunnah. “If the Khilafah Islamiyah can be established, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei will only become one of the provinces. RIYADH, May 21 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump, struggling to shake a brewing scandal at home, will attempt a reset on Sunday with the Islamic world after frequently attacking Muslims on the campaign trail last year and trying to ban many from the United States.

Trump’s afternoon speech at an Arab Islamic American Summit will include appeals for Muslims to unite against the threat of Islamic militants. A senior administration official said Trump’s basic theme in the speech will be to call for unity and say Muslims need to confront radicalism. Whether he would use his signature campaign phrase “radical Islamic terrorism” to describe the threat was unclear. His speech was still being worked on late on Saturday, and some advisers were cautioning him against using the term. Saudi Arabia is the first stop on Trump’s initial foreign trip, a nine-day journey through the Middle East and Europe. Trump drew the ire of Muslims during his presidential campaign by calling for a ban on them entering the United States. Putin’s ex-wife linked to multimillion-dollar property business MOSCOW - The former wife of Russian president Vladimir Putin helped create and now supports a foundation that owns a historic Moscow property generating millions of dollars from tenants, a Reuters examination of property records has found. The building was renovated with help from associates of Putin, and the rental income is paid to a private company owned by a person whose name is the same as the maiden name of Putin’s former wife, corporate records show. The rent comes from Volkonsky House in central Moscow, which was an aristocrat’s home in pre-Soviet times and is now owned by The Centre for the Development of Inter-personal Communications (CDIC). Lyudmila Putina helped set up the non-commercial foundation, according to a report in state newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta and two sources who worked with the centre. Lyudmila was Putin’s wife from 1983 until their divorce, which was announced in 2013. The foundation was created in 2002, and in September 2006 Rossiiskaya Gazeta described Lyudmila as a “trustee” of the organisation. In an interview with the newspaper that year, she used the term “we” when discussing the foundation, and three sources currently familiar with the foundation’s work said Lyudmila supports a literary prize and publishing arm that the foundation runs. The CDIC has offices in Volkonsky House, but most of the building is let out to tenants, including two

big state banks, documents show. The tenants pay rent to a company called Meridian, which is 99 per cent owned by a company called Intererservis, corporate and property records reviewed by Reuters in early May showed. Intererservis, according to a state register of corporate entities, has been wholly owned since 2014 by a woman called Lyudmila Alexandrovna Shkrebnyova – which is the maiden name of Putin’s former wife. Reuters was unable to find documents confirming that Shkrebnyova and Putin’s ex-wife are the same person. But other connections, besides the name, point to the former first lady and the owner of Intererservis being the same person. A previous general director of Intererservis was Olga Alexandrovna Tsomayeva. Several Russian media reports refer to her as the sister of Putin’s former wife. Tsomayeva could not be reached for comment. In addition, the other 1 percent of Meridian is owned by Tatiana Shestakova, who was the wife of Vasily Shestakov, an old friend and judo sparring partner of Putin, until the Shestakovs divorced in 2013. Shestakova, who also helped create the CDIC, according to the state registry of corporate entities, could not be reached for comment. The Kremlin property department supervised the renovation work on the Volkonsky House in Moscow’s Vozdvizhenka Street, according to rental documents reviewed by Reuters, even though the building no longer belonged to the state at the time. JAKARTA - In the run-up to the fasting month of Ramadan that begins at the end of next week, the prices of commodities are now showing an upward trend, particularly outside Java. Among the commodities, the price of garlic has been rising, shooting up from about Rp30 thousand per kilogram (kg) to Rp50 thousand per kg. However, with the government conducting market operations, supplying some 58 thousand tons of imported garlic, and carrying out raids on hoarders, the price of the commodity was successfully lowered to about Rp25 thousand-Rp30 thousand per kg. “After we arrested three suspects for allegedly stocking up garlic, five hours later, the price of the commodity went down to Rp25 thousand per kg, or about 44 percent,” Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman stated after launching a garlic market operation at the Pasar Osowilangun Market in Surabaya, East Java, on Friday. The government is doing its best to lower the prices of basic commodities in the face of the fasting month. It hopes that the price of garlic would be lowered to below the Rp30 thousand-per-kg level. While conducting the market operations, the government and large distributors agreed on three price levels. Garlic imported from India should be sold at between Rp10 thousand and Rp15 thousand per kg, while that imported from China to be sold at Rp23 thousand per kg. About 99.25 percent of the do-

mestic demand for garlic is met by imports from China. It is estimated that the total annual imports of garlic stood at about 480-500 thousand tons. The supplies are imported from China, India, the US, Switzerland, and Malaysia. Since early this year, the price of garlic in the domestic market has continued to increase. In May 2017, the average price of garlic is about Rp50,680 per kg, up 31.5 percent from Rp38,554 per kg recorded in January 2017. According to Minister Sulaiman, garlic hoarding is one of the reasons for an increase in the price of the commodity. At least 182 tons of garlic had been found stocked up by PT LBU company in the Marunda area, North Jakarta, on Wednesday (May 17). This hoarding led the garlic price to shoot up to between Rp55 thousand and Rp60 thousand per kg. The minister, National Police Deputy Chief Com. Gen. Syafruddin, and Jakarta Regional Metro Jaya Police Chief Insp. Gen. Iriawan uncovered the piled up garlic stock at the Marunda area. The police arrested the alleged suspects. After the arrests, the prices of garlic in markets in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi gradually went down. The price is expected to drop from an average of Rp45 thousand per kg in the areas to below Rp38 thousand per kg at the consumers level based on the agreement among the trade ministry, agriculture ministry, and 42 importer companies. MALANG - Indonesias Communication and Informatics Minister Rudiantara revealed that 12 institutions were affected by the Wannacry ransomware, a malware that had attacked at least 200 thousand computers across the world.

“We have received a report confirming that 12 institutions were affected, but the figure could be higher,” Rudiantara stated during a graduation ceremony held at the Malang Muhammadiyah University on Saturday. The affected institutions include those in the plantation and manufacturing sectors, universities, and vehicle registration center located in Jakarta and other regions. “However, in general, the attack was not significant as compared to that reported in other countries, thanks to the media that helped us to warn the public,” he added. Rudiantara admitted that Indonesia had yet to be free from the malware attack, with six to eight of the viruses still being active. “Such viruses are less malicious than Wannacry, but they were here and attacked hundreds of computers in Indonesia,” the minister cautioned. Hence, Rudiantara has called on the public to regularly change the passwords of their accounts, emails, and ATM personal identification number to avoid virus attacks. “Regularly back up data, update software, or download the newest version of anti-virus software,” he remarked. Earlier, on Wednesday, the minister had stated that Indonesia was already free from the WannaCry ransomware attack. Ransomware is a malicious application designed to block access to computer systems and data by encrypting the files and demanding ransom to decrypt them.

The malware to have attacked thousands of computers across the world was the WannaCrypt0r 2.0 ransomware that breached the security gaps in the Windows operating system, patched by Microsoft in March through the Security Update Patch. However, the malware could spread rapidly across the world, as several computers had not been updated. (ant)

MALANG - Communication and Information Minister Rudiantara has vowed to offer high-speed internet access to all capitals and regencies in Indonesia by 2019 through the provision of government facilities under the “Tol Informasi” program. “In order to improve internet services, we are targeting to connect 500 capitals and regencies in the country with high-speed internet by 2019,” he noted here on Saturday. Currently, the country is facing a challenge in the form of a large internet access gap between regions, in addition to several areas that are yet to have internet access. Rudiantara cited the example of Java where internet speed is between three and four megabytes per second. Meanwhile, internet speed in Papua reaches only about 300 kilobytes per second, or one-tenth, not to mention

that it comes at a steep price. Hence, the government has initiated the “Tol Informasi” program aims to bridge the gap between islands through high-speed and relatively equal information access throughout the country. The Palapa Ring project is one of the infrastructure programs to be developed to support such initiative, with focus on building optical fiber connectivity across Indonesias territories. The project includes seven small fiber optic rings for Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Nusa Tenggara, Papua, Sulawesi, and Maluku as well as a “backhaul” or system to connect them all. The Palapa Ring will help to build a broadband network for high-speed internet access in 57 cities and regencies that do not have it yet and connect 28 cities and regencies with existing connectivity. It involves laser pens pointing into specifically positioned mirrors to reveal a conclusive hint. Then, our time ran out. Oh well. INDIANAPOLIS - Sebastien Bourdais was transported to hospital for surgery after the French driver suffered fractures to his pelvis and right hip from a crash during qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 on Saturday, officials said. The former Formula One driver was to be operated on at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital, IndyCar said in a statement. The 38-year-old Bourdais, who was driving for Dale Coyne Racing, slammed head-on into the safety barriers when his Honda-powered car lost control at Turn 2. “Sebastien is in good hands here at IU Methodist Hospital with the staff and now we just wait for him to recover,” team owner Dale Coyne said in a statement. During his first two laps, Bourdais was a full mile per hour faster than the rest of the field at an average speed of 231.534 mph before he crashed into the wall on his third circuit. Qualifying is determined by the average time over four laps. Bourdais won the season-opening race at St Petersburg, Florida and had the also clocked the fastest time in Friday’s practice. Celta Vigo coach Eduardo Berizzo to leave Spanish club

MADRID — Celta Vigo says Eduardo Berizzo will coach the team for the last time on Sunday against Real Sociedad in the Spanish league. Celta says it “can only show its gratitude for his hard work, commitment and passion . (during) one of the most brilliant periods we have ever had.” The 47-year-old Argentine, whose contract expires at the end of this season, has not commented on his future plans. Celta has not said who will replace Berizzo.

A former Celta defender, Berizzo returned as its manager in 2014 after Luis Enrique’s departure for Barcelona. Berizzo maintained its attacking style and, despite losing top talents Manuel “Nolito” Agudo and Fabian Orellana, led the team to the Europa League semifinals where it lost to Manchester United. The props and décor are thoughtfully designed, and while tempting, some clearly marked items are not to be touched or forcefully yanked out for clues. After several successful trapdoor openings, the final realm has us all frustrated and baffled for a considerable amount of time. It involves laser pens pointing into specifically positioned mirrors to reveal a conclusive hint. Then, our time ran out. Oh well. They did show us the remaining puzzle solutions though, just to please our fizzing curiosity. Next time, we’ll go for the next up on the difficulty scale, the Egyptian

INDIANAPOLIS - Sebastien Bourdais was transported to hospital for surgery after the French driver suffered fractures to his pelvis and right hip from a crash during qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 on Saturday, officials said. The former Formula One driver was to be operated on at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital, IndyCar said in a statement. Amid firestorm at home, Trump to seek reset with Islamic world

RIYADH, May 21 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump, struggling to shake a brewing scandal at home, will attempt a reset on Sunday with the Islamic world after frequently attacking Muslims on the campaign trail last year and trying to ban many from the United States.

Trump’s afternoon speech at an Arab Islamic American Summit will include appeals for Muslims to unite against the threat of Islamic militants. A senior administration official said Trump’s basic theme in the speech will be to call for unity and say Muslims need to confront radicalism. Whether he would use his signature campaign phrase “radical Islamic terrorism” to describe the threat was unclear. His speech was still being worked on late on Saturday, and some advisers were cautioning him against using the term. Saudi Arabia is the first stop on Trump’s initial foreign trip, a nine-day journey through the Middle East and Europe. Trump drew the ire of Muslims during his presidential campaign by calling for a ban on them entering the United States. Government successfully lowers garlic prices

Putin’s ex-wife linked to multimillion-dollar property business MOSCOW - The former wife of Russian president Vladimir Putin helped create and now supports a foundation that owns a historic Moscow property generating millions of dollars from tenants, a Reuters examination of property records has found. The building was renovated with help from associates of Putin, and the rental income is paid to a private company owned by a person whose name is the same as the maiden name of Putin’s former wife, corporate records show. The rent comes from Volkonsky House in central Moscow, which was an aristocrat’s home in pre-Soviet times and is now owned by The Centre for the Development of Inter-personal Communications (CDIC). Lyudmila Putina helped set up the non-commercial foundation, according to a report in state newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta and two sources who worked with the centre. Lyudmila was Putin’s wife from 1983 until their divorce, which was announced in 2013. The foundation was created in 2002, and in September 2006 Rossiiskaya Gazeta described Lyudmila as a “trustee” of the organisation. In an interview with the newspaper that year, she used the term “we” when discussing the foundation, and three sources currently familiar with the foundation’s work said Lyudmila supports a literary prize and publishing arm that the foundation runs. The CDIC has offices in Volkonsky House, but most of the building is let out to tenants, including two

big state banks, documents show. The tenants pay rent to a company called Meridian, which is 99 per cent owned by a company called Intererservis, corporate and property records reviewed by Reuters in early May showed. Intererservis, according to a state register of corporate entities, has been wholly owned since 2014 by a woman called Lyudmila Alexandrovna Shkrebnyova – which is the maiden name of Putin’s former wife. Reuters was unable to find documents confirming that Shkrebnyova and Putin’s ex-wife are the same person. But other connections, besides the name, point to the former first lady and the owner of Intererservis being the same person. A previous general director of Intererservis was Olga Alexandrovna Tsomayeva. Several Russian media reports refer to her as the sister of Putin’s former wife. Tsomayeva could not be reached for comment. In addition, the other 1 percent of Meridian is owned by Tatiana Shestakova, who was the wife of Vasily Shestakov, an old friend and judo sparring partner of Putin, until the Shestakovs divorced in 2013. Shestakova, who also helped create the CDIC, according to the state registry of corporate entities, could not be reached for comment. The Kremlin property department supervised the renovation work on the Volkonsky House in Moscow’s Vozdvizhenka Street, according to rental documents reviewed by Reuters, even though the building no longer belonged to the state at the time. JAKARTA - In the run-up to the fasting month of Ramadan that begins at the end of next week, the prices of commodities are now showing an upward trend, particularly outside Java. Among the commodities, the price of garlic has been rising, shooting up from about Rp30 thousand per kilogram (kg) to Rp50 thousand per kg. However, with the government conducting market operations, supplying some 58 thousand tons of imported garlic, and carrying out raids on hoarders, the price of the commodity was successfully lowered to about Rp25 thousand-Rp30 thousand per kg. “After we arrested three suspects for allegedly stocking up garlic, five hours later, the price of the commodity went down to Rp25 thousand per kg, or about 44 percent,” Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman stated after launching a garlic market operation at the Pasar Osowilangun Market in Surabaya, East Java, on Friday. The government is doing its best to lower the prices of basic commodities in the face of the fasting month. It hopes that the price of garlic would be lowered to below the Rp30 thousand-per-kg level. While conducting the market operations, the government and large distributors agreed on three price levels. Garlic imported from India should be sold at between Rp10 thousand and Rp15 thousand per kg, while that imported from China to be sold at Rp23 thousand per kg. About 99.25 percent of the do-

mestic demand for garlic is met by imports from China. It is estimated that the total annual imports of garlic stood at about 480-500 thousand tons. The supplies are imported from China, India, the US, Switzerland, and Malaysia. Since early this year, the price of garlic in the domestic market has continued to increase. In May 2017, the average price of garlic is about Rp50,680 per kg, up 31.5 percent from Rp38,554 per kg recorded in January 2017. According to Minister Sulaiman, garlic hoarding is one of the reasons for an increase in the price of the commodity. At least 182 tons of garlic had been found stocked up by PT LBU company in the Marunda area, North Jakarta, on Wednesday (May 17). This hoarding led the garlic price to shoot up to between Rp55 thousand and Rp60 thousand per kg. The minister, National Police Deputy Chief Com. Gen. Syafruddin, and Jakarta Regional Metro Jaya Police Chief Insp. Gen. Iriawan uncovered the piled up garlic stock at the Marunda area. The police arrested the alleged suspects. After the arrests, the prices of garlic in markets in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi gradually went down. The price is expected to drop from an average of Rp45 thousand per kg in the areas to below Rp38 thousand per kg at the consumers level based on the agreement among the trade ministry, agriculture ministry, and 42 importer companies. Wannacry ransomware affected 12 institutions in Indonesia: Minister

MALANG - Indonesias Communication and Informatics Minister Rudiantara revealed that 12 institutions were affected by the Wannacry ransomware, a malware that had attacked at least 200 thousand computers across the world.

“We have received a report confirming that 12 institutions were affected, but the figure could be higher,” Rudiantara stated during a graduation ceremony held at the Malang Muhammadiyah University on Saturday. The affected institutions include those in the plantation and manufacturing sectors, universities, and vehicle registration center located in Jakarta and other regions. “However, in general, the attack was not significant as compared to that reported in other countries, thanks to the media that helped us to warn the public,” he added. Rudiantara admitted that Indonesia had yet to be free from the malware attack, with six to eight of the viruses still being active. “Such viruses are less malicious than Wannacry, but they were here and attacked hundreds of computers in Indonesia,” the minister cautioned. Hence, Rudiantara has called on the public to regularly change the passwords of their accounts, emails, and ATM personal identification number to avoid virus attacks. “Regularly back up data, update software, or download the newest version of anti-virus software,” he remarked. Earlier, on Wednesday, the minister had stated that Indonesia was already free from the WannaCry ransomware attack. Ransomware is a malicious application designed to block access to computer systems and data by encrypting the files and demanding ransom to decrypt them.

The malware to have attacked thousands of computers across the world was the WannaCrypt0r 2.0 ransomware that breached the security gaps in the Windows operating system, patched by Microsoft in March through the Security Update Patch. MALANG - Communication and Information Minister Rudiantara has vowed to offer high-speed internet access to all capitals and regencies in Indonesia by 2019 through the provision of government facilities under the “Tol Informasi” program. “In order to improve internet services, we are targeting to connect 500 capitals and regencies in the country with high-speed internet by 2019,” he noted here on Saturday. Currently, the country is facing a challenge in the form of a large internet access gap between regions, in addition to several areas that are yet to have internet access. Rudiantara cited the example of Java where internet speed is between three and four megabytes per second. Meanwhile, internet speed in Papua reaches only about 300 kilobytes per second, or one-tenth, not to mention

that it comes at a steep price. Hence, the government has initiated the “Tol Informasi” program aims to bridge the gap between islands through high-speed and relatively equal information access throughout the country. The Palapa Ring project is one of the infrastructure programs to be developed to support such initiative, with focus on building optical fiber connectivity across Indonesias territories. The project includes seven small fiber optic rings for Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Nusa Tenggara, Papua, Sulawesi, and Maluku as well as a “backhaul” or system to connect them all. The Palapa Ring will help to build a broadband network for high-speed internet access in 57 cities and regencies that do not have it yet and connect 28 cities and regencies with existing connectivity. TPP countries agree to keep trade deal alive despite US rejection

HANOI - The United States ruled out returning to the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal and said on Sunday it only wanted bilateral agreements in Asia, as Japan and other members agreed to more talks on pressing ahead themselves. Turmoil over global trade negotiations was laid bare at a meeting of Asia-Pacific Cooperation (APEC) countries, which failed to agree the usual joint statement after U.S. opposition to wording on free trade and fighting protectionism. The meeting in Hanoi, Vietnam, was the biggest global trade gathering since U.S. President Donald Trump upended the old order with his “America First” trade policy, designed to protect American jobs. Trump withdrew from TPP in one of his first acts in office, but the 11 remaining countries agreed in Hanoi to explore how they could still move ahead - partly in the hope that the United States would

reconsider leaving. New U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said there was no way back. “TPP-11 can make their own decisions and the United States makes its decision, but we expect to stay engaged and I believe at some point there will be a series of bilateral agreements with partners in this part of the world,” he told a news conference. Although the TPP members kept the trade agreement alive, they fell short of a wholehearted commitment to move ahead immediately with a deal that members also see as a way to contain an increasingly dominant China.

“Eleven countries have shown a lot of unity and a desire to move through some of the equations that will be required to look to put the agreement into force,” New Zealand Trade Minister Todd McClay, leading the discussions, told Reuters. One of the biggest challenges is keeping on board Vietnam and Malaysia, which signed up for the deal and promised to make major reforms largely to get better U.S. market access. They now want to renegotiate some points. The volume of trade between the remaining countries is barely a quarter of the level it would have been if the United States had remained in the TPP. BANGKOK - On Friday evenings in Thailand, sandwiched between the evening news and a popular soap opera, is a primetime programme that has been running for three years, or ever since the military took power in a May 22, 2014 coup. Called “Sustainable Development from a Royal Philosophy” it stars junta leader and former army chief Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha speaking on a range of topics, from the virtues of modesty to the state of the economy. The military has always played a prominent role in Thai life. But Prayuth’s show is just one of many examples of how embedded the junta has become in Thai society. Thailand’s military government has acknowledged it wants to weaken political parties and maintain permanent influence over future elected governments, partly through a new constitution approved by Thailand’s king last month. But data compiled by Reuters shows the military is not just trying to influence Thailand’s political life. It is leaving an imprint on nearly every institution of Thai society, with brass hats far more entrenched in senior positions than under pre-

vious military governments. ENTWINED WITH MONARCHY The military now controls 143 out of 250 parliamentary seats. Under the previous junta after the 2006 coup, the military held 67 out of 242 seats. The cabinet is stacked with soldiers. Out of the 36 cabinet members, 12 have a military background. In 2006, only four military officers were among the 37 cabinet members. The military is also entwined with the powerful monarchy - the name of Prayuth’s show is derived from the philosophy of the late king Bhumibol Adulyadej, who died last October after seven decades on the throne. soldier - are military men. It was just under half in the previous Council. Rouhani, long known as a cautious and mild-mannered establishment insider, reinvented himself as a bold champion of reform during the election campaign, which culminated on Friday in victory with more than 57 percent of the vote. His main challenger, hardline judge Ebrahim Raisi, received 38 percent. In his first televised speech after the result, Rouhani appeared to openly defy conservative judges by praising the spiritual leader of the reform camp, former President Mohammad Khatami. A court has banned quoting or naming Khatami on air. “Our nation’s message in the election was clear: Iran’s nation chose the path of interaction with the world, away from violence and extremism,” Rouhani said. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, whose country has had no diplomatic relations with Iran since 1980, said he hoped Rouhani would use his second term to end Tehran’s ballistic missile programme and what he called its network of terrorism. Iran denies any involvement in terrorism and says its missile programme, which U.S. President Donald Trump recently targeted with new sanctions, is purely for defence purposes. Although the powers of the elected president are limited by those of unelected Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who outranks him, the scale of Rouhani’s victory gives the pro-reform camp its strongest mandate in at least 12 years to seek the sort of change that hardliners have thwarted for decades. Rouhani’s opponent Raisi, a protege of Khamenei, had united the conservative faction and had been tipped as a potential successor to the 77-year-old supreme leader. SIDON - It might well excite one’s curiosity to speak of a soap museum without mentioning the history of “sapo” and it might not seem entirely appropriate to use the noble word “museum” in a context which is not satisfactory. At present one finds a Museum of Mankind, of Motor Cars, or Aeronautics, of Wine, of Traditions and Customs, of Soap and of Waxworks, in fact the list is endless. This sublime word “museum” means a collection, an exposition, a fair, or anything similar. To begin with, it was the holy Eden of the masterpieces of creative minds, of artists and of geniuses. The story of soap goes back several thousands of years, before 4500 B.C. to be more exact. In Sumer it was a soapy paste with a basis of clay, ashes and fat, and the same in Egypt and Phoenicia. It was in the 4th century A.D. that the Gallic Romans gave the name “sapo” to a more complex paste that was used for treating the skin and certain disorders. Baths as we know them were taken not at all or once or twice a year. It was only in 1371 at Marseille that soap began its evolution to reach its present form of an indispensable product for general use. Then it was at Saïda, or Sidon, ancient Phoenician city that has seen a whole succession of civilizations and conquerors and which was the capital of Emir Fakhreddine the Great, with many temples and citadels, a palace, a port, and squares, that a distinguished family decided to transform its fine residence into the museum Khan es-Saboon”, for soaps

A historical section of the museum introduces artifacts which were found during onsite excavation and which include remains of clay pipe heads dating from the 17th to 19th century as well as pottery fragments. The Museum building is an old soap factory built in the 17th century, although containing parts thought to date back to the 13th century, and was restored by the Audi Foundation before officially opening to the public in November 2000. To protect farmland, district govt expected to subsidize property tax

BANGLI - Depreciation of farmland due to rampant conversion becomes the problem faced by almost all the regions in Bali, and Bangli district is no exception. To protect the existence of farmland in Bangli so as not to continue to shrink, local government is expected to make policies that alleviate farmers. One of the expected policies is by subsidizing or eliminating property tax for farmland. Chief of Subak Tegallalang, Sang Ketut Rencana, said on Saturday (May 20) there are many factors triggering the farmland conversion in Bangli, especially in urban areas. In addition to the difficulty to get irrigation water, the imposition of property tax is also admitted to contribute to the shrinkage of farmland. He said that many farmers in urban areas such as the LC Uma Aya preferred to sell their paddy fields to investors and other parties because the amount of property taxes (PBB) to be paid to government is considered quite high. CEREMONY of the royal son adoption of Saren Kelod Semar Kuning Palace is a very historic moment for the palace. The adoption inaugurated by law is special because the King I Gusti Ketut Dalem is pleased to adopt a son from Laos, Dato Sri Dr. Aixinjueluo Yuhao.

The son adoption was held on Saturday (May 20) at Saren Kelod Palace, Ubud. The son adoption ceremony of King Saren Kelod Palace was attended by the family of King Saren Kelod Palace, relatives and business colleagues from a number of countries. Some of them are from Taiwan, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, United States (US), and Singapore. Officially, this son adoption ceremony was done by embedding the royal insignia to Dato Sri and spouse. After the coronation, Dato Sri Dr. Aixinjueluo Yuhao was named Ananda Putra I Gusti Ketut Dalem. This honorable adoption aims to widely introduce the Balinese art throughout the world for the development of Bali tourism. Ananda Putra I Gusti Ketut Dalem said that his intention to be a member of the royal family of Saren Kelod Semar Kuning Palace of Ubud began with his interest in the unique Balinese art that contains artistic value. He claimed to have seen a number of Balinese artworks while making a visit, especially on wood carvings, stones and paintings, where according to him, retaining special points. Therefore, he wants to widely introduce the Balinese arts to the world. Moreover, he is now one of the presidents of the World

Cultural Council. “From such intention, I would like to tie up the relationship of being a foster child at Saren Kelod Semar Kuning Palace of Ubud, so that I am considered to be a part of Bali,” he said. He brought several business partners from a number of countries, including Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan, China, Laos, Singapore and America. “They are shareholders in some of my companies. I invite them to introduce Balinese art so that they can promote it in their home country. I invite the World Cultural Council, president of Chinese collector association, some literati and the art circles,” he said. Further, he said that his meeting with the king of Saren Kelod Semar Kuning Palace of Ubud started from an international cultural exchange meeting a few years ago. Since then, the communication discussing about the art references continues. Moreover, last year he once invited the king and his family as guests of honor to make a visit to Laos. Besides, it is also meant to see the projects in Laos and Malaysia. This brotherhood is getting closer after a few meetings. In addition, in terms of ancestors, the king of Saren Kelod Semar Kuning Palace is a descendant of the King of Majapahit Dynasty who has similarities and close relationship to Qing Dynasty in Laos. “This meeting is not a coincidence. Moreover, it has a common ancestor. In addition, it happens because the king has no children and my father has died, so that on the advice of close friends, I want to be adopted as the son of the king. Thus, we hold the current ceremony to bind closer familial relationships. This is the fate of two children

and father who are brought together,” he said. By presenting business colleagues of the World Cultural Council representatives as well as some literary and art circles, he hoped that the art in Bali can be better known around the world. Moreover, this effort has been carried out with a fairly mature endeavor. Thus, the world’s investors want to introduce Bali in their country. After the adoption ceremony, King I Gusti Ketut Dalem gave a certificate and kris dagger to 31 VVIPs from seven countries recognized as relatives of the king. In the meantime, Dato Sri Dr. Aixinjueluo Yuhao granted the certificate to nine members of the royal family recognized as a member of the World Council for Culture and Arts. The missile was launched at 0759 GMT from a location near Pukchang, 60 km (36 miles) northeast of the capital Pyongyang, an area where North Korea attempted to test-launch another missile last month but failed, South Korea’s Office of Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.
